Today my mother made me go to the beach. And while I was there I let myself enjoy the water and sand between my toes.
After a little while I felt like crying.
I felt like crying because remembered the videos I had seen of Palestinian children playing in the water of their beaches, of parents chasing children around while they laughed, of people enjoying the water and feeling the sand between their toes.
Then I thought about how these people don't get to enjoy their beaches anymore. Because Israel won't let them, because Israel is bombing the families who used to play in the sand.
When we got in the car my mum rolled all the windows down, said something about the fresh air. And as we drove I felt the cool wind against my face, in my hair.
And I wanted to cry.
Because the people in Gaza don't get to just enjoy the fresh air. Because all they're breathing in is debris from destroyed buildings and white phosphorus, and the smell of the dead.
I looked out my window and saw my old school as we passed. And I felt guilty, because I dropped out. But their are children in Palestine who are crying and begging to go back to school and they can't.
The children in Gaza can't go back to school because Israel has destroyed and bombed them.
And I think about the displaced people taking refuge in those very schools while Israel attacked them. I think about how unfair and cruel that is.
And then I see the trees. My favourite trees, Gum trees that are native to my land. And I think about how the native trees in Gaza are being destroyed and bulldozed, very important trees that mean a lot to the Palestinian people. And those trees are being taken away by Israel.
Then there are houses, homes and people going about their day. I watch them from my car window and I want to cry still. Because the people in Gaza have no homes, they don't get to go about their day.
I think about the displaced people in Gaza, who are lucky to have a tent to sleep in. Because Israel has bombed their homes, rained white phosphorus above their homes, bulldozed over their homes, forced the Palestinian people to flee from their homes.
I'm barely holding in my tears, because I'm in the car on the way to my own home and the people in Gaza don't get to do that.
We pass the shops, and my throat starts to close up because there's people buying ice cream and groceries for their families. And the people in Gaza are being starved by Israel.
The people in Gaza don't get to have ice cream, they can't do their grocery shopping. They don't even have enough food for their own children because Israel refuses to let any aid trucks in, because they control all the borders and entries into Gaza.
We pass by a chemist in particular and I think about all the children in Gaza not being able to receive medical care. Because the hospitals are being attacked by Israel. Because no medical aid can get in. Because they have doctors being killed.
And then we pass by the park. The park is empty. And I think about the empty parks in Gaza. Because there are no children to play on the swings, no children to run and laugh. Because the children are crying instead. The children have no legs to play because they've been bombed. They can't laugh because white phosphorus has burned through their faces. They can't do anything because they are frozen in fear.
Theses children who should be filling up empty parks are holding their baby siblings, trying to keep them alive because their parents, aunt's and uncles, have all been slaughtered by the IDF. These children who should be laughing are screaming out for help because members of the IDF are raping them.
These children who should be having fun at the park are prisoners of Israel for throwing rocks at tanks like the boy David who threw a rock at the giant Goliath to save his people. And these children are being tortured in these prisons because they were hopeful and brave.
These children who should be with their families at the park are dying. Are dead. A lying beneath the ruble. Are cold and limp with no air in their lungs. These children are in pieces scattered across the blood drenched ground.
They should have been at the park today.
I can hear a man talking on the radio, and he's talking about unimportant nonsense things and I feel angry. I feel frustrated. Because why is no one else talking about this!? Why is no one talking about what's happening to these people!??
We pass by the fresh water creak right before my house and I want to scream! Because I know there's no fresh water in Gaza. I know there are Palestinians dying of dehydration and yet there is fresh, drinkable water running right there! But the water in Palestine has been polluted by blood and disease, and the seawater Israel has flooded their water supply with.
And when I get to my bed I finally scream and cry and punch my mattress to get all my emotions out.
Now I'm numb and writing this so that someone will see it, hoping that someone will understand, hoping that someone will fight even harder for the people of Palestine.
I'm hoping that they can enjoy their beaches again. I hope that's sometime soon.

a fruit made for two
⚝ jeonghan x reader
⚝ comfort, romance, established couple
⚝ notes: you might think "how lame" when you will be done with it, or "can she write about anything else other than tangerines" and yes, while i acknowledge my problem with tangerines, i can tell you that i'm done writing about them. but enough of my rambles, just wanted to post this little (maybe a bit sad) scenario that i have come up with during these days.
wishing you a good start of the year and a not so rough january (i personally dread this month) :)
enjoy and thank you for taking time to read this short fic x
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
you have always liked to peel tangerines neatly. jeonghan was focusing his attention on your fingers work. the sections coming apart cleanly in your hands.
he’s trying to cut out the noise, the laughters of the other guests at the table, the cracking open of the nuts, the clinking of the glasses and the cutlery, your aunt bragging about your cousins to your mom and your nan nearly tripping into the dog.
“that’s the limit, from then on her eyesight will worsen to blindness and there’s nothing they can do,” that’s what your father had told jeonghan before christmas lunch.
he reasoned you didn’t have the courage to confront jeonghan with the matter. so, he took it in his hands.
your thick eye-glasses nearly falling off your nose while you’re peeling away neatly the white parts.
“hannie,” you said, “i don’t know how you do it. always tearing holes when you peel tangerines and oranges, juice going in every direction,”
you’re jeonghan’s love of his life.
“i hope you never learn how to peel them, hannie. i want to do it for you for a lifetime.”
x
“where’d you get these?” you nearly shouted in the college backyard, while jeonghan handed you an orange.
“just took them out of a plastic bag someone left behind in class,” he said.
you laughed. you started to peel the orange, separating it in two perfect halves to give one of them to him. “you know, when i won’t be able to see no more i will miss terribly peeling citrus..”
if he could have wore his half like a friendship bracelet, he would have. “i mean, i still will be able to do it but man how it satisfies me to see the colour of the fruit changing: different shades of orange, white and then orange again,”
instead, jeonghan just swallowed each segment one by one and told himself that this, this exact moment, would have always meant so much more.
“... and your face, to see your face so focused on how i peel citrus fruits! i have to start giving you lesson,”
to share it with you. to chew and to swallow with you the sections that you so dutifully and accurately peeled, listening to all the possible rambles you might have had to tell him. to just taste the same thing in the same moment.
“here you go hannie,” you handed to jeonghan his perfectly peeled half.
the air around you filled up with the smell of peeled orange.
x
it was christmas’ eve. no festivities at home this year. closing the front door, jeonghan longed to hear your hasty steps down the corridor.
longing to slip an orange or a tangerine into the pocket of your wool coat before heading to town.
instead, he ignited the engine of his car and drove to the hospital where you had been staying. your eyesight barely spots of colour and light by now.
you were looking out the window into the wintery morning haze with a smile on your lips, when jeonghan entered the room. “hannie you’re here,” you recognized his footsteps and his scent. the sweetest kind.
he brought tangerines with him, peeled three of them in his car. he peeled them perfectly, peeled away every little part of the white stuff until they were all orange like you did. so you wouldn’t have to worry about not enjoy one of his favourite things.
it took him some time, but love always does.

weird question, but is there a reason why humans with rabies don't become as mindlessly aggressive as animals with rabies? like, how come people with rabies aren't running around biting everyone?
If I'd hazard a guess, it probably cooks us before we progress that far. Additionally, it also likely has something to do with natural instinct- humans with rabies while they are still able to talk report feeling intense fear and pain while experiencing hallucinations.
Most humans actively don't want to hurt other people- I have a schizophrenic aunt and even in her worst delusions and hallucinations where she may be screaming threats, she's never actually followed through on any of them because she genuinely doesn't want to hurt anyone when she's capable of processing situations logically. Similarly, I have a friend-of-a-friend who is also severely mentally ill, and the only times he's ever hurt someone are when he gets grabbed while he's hallucinating that someone is trying to hurt him. Those he's lashed out at in this state get shoved or kicked or punched before he continues to try to get away from them (they also forgive him immediately because they are his caretakers and understand his mental state very well).
When we started using tools as a species, we also stopped reaching for "biting you" as a defensive response unless there is truly no other choice. Even in the grips of intense fear and panic and pain and delusion and hallucination and paranoia, humans are more likely to choose literally any other option than teeth unless that's their last line of defense. We probably did bite each other back when we were no different than our great ape cousins.
More or less, I'm not entirely convinced that rabies sends signals for "bite" specifically, and is more sending signals for "attack", and humans don't really reach for "bite" when attacking as a general rule unlike other animals. Humans who are restrained in their hospital beds are significantly more likely to bite their caregivers- shoving, kicking, and punching are out of the question when you're tied down. That is true regardless of if they have rabies or not.
Additionally, the virus seems to only progress so far before it stagnates at a specific stage in certain animals. Bats are significantly more likely to have "dumb rabies" than "furious rabies". This could be due to a number of things ranging from "dumb rabies makes them incapable of flight and fucks up their sonar [true!] and so they starve to death before symptoms can progress past that [theory!] since they have fast metabolisms and missing even a single night's meal is devastating to their health [true!]" to "bats show some resistance to rabies as a whole [true!] and thus it may take much longer for symptoms to progress in the usual manner and so the bat generally dies before it can go any further [theory!]" Bats CAN progress to the furious stage, but we don't tend to see it as often.
There has never been a recorded instance of rabies passing from human to human so my money's on a combo of the two theories. It's very possible that Grug The Caveman got rabies from the wolves he was trying to tame and then wiped out his entire society by zombie-biting the fuck out of everyone who tried to help him. But we weren't writing things down at that point, so we have no way of knowing.
Rabies' first documentation is 4000 years ago- but it's very possible it existed before that, since the writing just states that the owner of a rabid dog needs to take provisions against it biting anyone, meaning we knew by then what rabies was and that the bite was dangerous. It's very possible this disease has followed us around since before humans harnessed fire and invented the wheel. That's a decent amount of un-accounted-for time for humans to have hulked out and started zombie-biting.
We have so many folkstory monsters in nearly every culture on the planet that boil down to "had contact with an animal that was acting strangly, turned me into a savage monster that tries to kill everything I see less than a month later, btw my monster disease is super contagious and I spread it by biting the fuck out of you" that predate any modern science knowledge of how the virus works, which makes me think that it probably did happen back in the caveman days and it's ancestrial memory that has us clinging to these concepts to this day.

Hey Brother Part 2
Here is the long-awaited Part 2 of Hey Brother! I don't know how many parts it will be but I will make sure to keep everything updated. I tried to tag everyone that asked but if I missed you, please let me know. I hope you guys like it!
~*~*~*~
They didn’t get to say goodbye. Even with Phil speeding down the expressway at 90 mph, it wasn’t enough to be able to see their grandma before she passed. With one look into the room, Steve knew it was too late. The rest of the family was already there, surrounding her sheet-covered body with tears in their eyes and damp Kleenex clutched in their fists. They’d just missed her. Steve took one look around the room before storming back outside.
Why couldn’t he ever do anything right? Tonight was supposed to be a fun, relaxing night and ended up being nothing short of a horror show. His boyfriend thought he was bullshit, his grandma was dead, and his entire family now knew that he was a piece of shit that missed being able to say goodbye. Fuck, why couldn’t anything ever go well for him?!
Steve punched the brick wall next to him, not even noticing the pain, and slid down the wall to hug his knees. He sobbed as he thought about how he’d never hear his grandma’s voice again or feel her love through gentle touches that no one else ever quite managed to match. He hadn’t visited her as much as he’d wanted to recently due to the craziness of the last few months. Did she know he loved her? He wasn’t there with her in her last moments so how could she have known? The thought brought a new wave of tears into his eyes and his knees just barely muffled his sobs of pain. Oh god, his grandma was dead and he hadn’t said goodbye to her.
Steve felt strong arms wrap around his shoulders and struggled slightly to escape the grasp before quickly succumbing. It was just Phil, his older brother who had also missed his chance to stay goodbye to her because of Steve. His older brother that had wanted to move closer to his grandma and aunt years ago but had stayed in Hawkins for Steve. He stayed so Steve wouldn’t be alone in the empty house that his parents rarely visited. The reminder only served to make Steve feel worse.
“Phil, I’m so so-sorry! This-this is my f-fault. You didn’t get to say go-goodbye to her because of me! I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry…”
Phil just hugged him closer and shook his head into his hair. There were tears streaking down his face as well and the lenses of his glasses were fogged. He didn’t say anything in response, there was nothing that he could say to make the situation any better. Nothing was going to bring their grandma back or stop their hearts from hurting. But he could sit on the dirty floor of the hospital corridor and hug his brother with all of his might. That he could do and that he did.
~*~*~*~
Phil watched Steve talk to his parents through the windowed walls of the waiting room. With every word his mom or Dick uttered, Steve seemed to shrink in on himself even more. They were obviously mad at him for not getting there in time to say goodbye to her and Phil wasn’t going to stand for that. So he made his way in to talk to his mom and stepdad for the first time since being kicked out ten years ago.
“Hey, why are you screaming at him? Haven’t you done enough? Just let him grieve in peace, Jesus Christ.”
Martha spun around to look at him and gasped when she saw him. He was still in his police uniform having not had the chance to change yet in the fray. Knowing that that was the reason she disowned him made him feel all the more vindicated.
Her face paled when she realized it was him and she muttered a quiet, “Phil?”
Dick stepped around Martha to point an accusing finger in his face. “What the hell are you doing here, Phil? You’re not family and you’re not supposed to be turning our son against us either!”
“Get your finger out my face, you dick. I’m here because my grandma was dying and my brother needed me. Now, step back or I’ll arrest you whether we’re in my jurisdiction or not,” Phil told him. He couldn’t actually arrest him or do anything more than annoy him outside of Hawkins but the threat did seem to land where he wanted it to. Dick ambled back a step and glared between him and Steve. As if it was their fault their parents sucked.
Martha started hissing unintelligible nonsense to her husband so Phil focused back on Steve. His kid brother was still shaking as if the adrenaline of speeding all the way up here was still flooding his veins and his trademark hair was hanging against his forehead limply as if it too couldn’t handle the stress of dealing with the Harringtons.
Phil couldn’t help him in the parent department but he could make sure he was looked after the best he could.
“Come on Steve-o, I got us a motel room up the street. Let’s get some rest and handle things in the morning,” he picked up Steve’s jacket as he spoke and nudged his shoulder to get him moving.
“What?” Steve asked him in confusion. “What about mom and dad?”
“I’m sure they’ll figure it out, they always do. But they’re not my concern right now, okay? You are. So right now, I’m going to take you to Denny’s for some food and then we’re going to get some sleep at the motel. We’ll figure everything else out later. Sound good, little bro?”
Steve just nodded at him with the ghost of a smile. “Yeah, sounds good.”
~*~*~*~
Eddie knew he had fucked up. As soon as Steve walked through the door, he knew he’d messed everything up, just like he always did. He knew Steve was sensitive about high school happenings and people calling him bullshit but he’d still done it. What kind of boyfriend did that make him? Not a very good one, clearly.
He rehearsed apologies all night instead of sleeping, determined to fix things with Steve as soon as the sun rose. He couldn’t stand the idea of Steve being mad at him or upset for any longer than he had to be. It felt like it was a contest being in a relationship with Steve. He was the perfect boyfriend and made Eddie feel inferior in every aspect without even trying. Eddie felt like he was constantly playing catch-up and just as he started to get close to where he should be, he’d fuck everything up and go back to the starting point.
At half past three in the morning, Eddie couldn’t wait any longer. He wrote a barely legible note for Wayne and sped off towards Loch Nora. Knowing Steve, he wouldn’t be sleeping either. After the Upside Down, it was hard for them to sleep alone hence why they spent so many nights together. The image of Steve laying in bed alone with tears stained on his cheeks only made Eddie feel worse. Holy fuck, he had a lot to make up for.
But when he pulled the van up to the Harrington house, all the lights were off. Even the porch light that Steve always kept on was dark and Eddie got a bad feeling. Something was off here, he could tell. Nausea swirled in his gut and his chest felt tight, something was wrong.
Eddie parked his van in the driveway behind the Beemer and pulled out the key that Steve had given him to open the front door. Everything appeared to be fine as he walked through. The foyer was as spotless as it always was, the living room was clean, and the kitchen was untouched. But when Eddie walked into Steve’s empty bedroom, it looked like a bomb had gone off. Steve was missing, his clothes were scattered all over the floor, and his bed was made like it hadn’t been slept in. Jesus Christ, had Eddie run Steve out of town?!
Eddie ran out of the Harrington house like a bat out of hell and sped all the way to the Hopper-Byers’ where he pounded on the door until Hopper answered it with threats of violence. He couldn’t focus on the horror dawning on Will’s face or El, the panicked glances between Jonathan and Joyce, or the aggrieved sigh that Hop let out. All Eddie could focus on was the fact that this was his fault. He was the one who yelled at Steve over some stupid game and caused him to leave. Now, Steve was missing. He was alone and Eddie couldn’t blame anyone but himself.
Hopper promised to look for him right away even though Steve was probably just off sulking somewhere. He even called in Officer Powell early and tried to call Officer Callahan too but he didn’t answer. He left with his gun, an extra large thermos of coffee, and a promise to Eddie that he would find Steve. Then, Eddie was left with the Byers to try and explain the stupid argument he’d started that caused this entire mess in the first place.
He just hoped that Hopper could find Steve soon because he didn’t think he could function anymore without Steve by his side.

Unfinished task
a/n: it took me a lot of time to finish it sorry...
Tumblr media
*not my GIF*
Pairing: Lena Oberdorf x AWFC!Reader; Arsenal WFC x NEDWNT!Reader
Summary: Based on this (requested by anon)
Type: Fluff
Warning: me,tion of heart attack and nothing else (i think)
word count: 4983 (sorry)
----------
2018/19
This season, everything changed for you. To start, you made your first step and scored your first goals in Frauen Bundelsiga for Essen with your best friend Lena Oberdorf. Talking about the German player, you and her were known to be pretty close; your mom raised you alone, and she was not very surprised when you told her that you wanted to play football. Growing up in a family of football fans who had some relatives who played with the legend Johan Cruff helped. You started with a boy team, and that's where you met Lena; she was also a girl, pretty good, and despite her roughness on the pitch, you quickly became friends. She was a solid midfielder when you were a more agile and versatile player.
Life couldn't be better for you, but that's when we're talking about the second reason this season is so special for you. A few weeks before the end of the season, you planned to take a new step in your and Lena's relationship. You started to see her as more than a friend a few months after she assisted one of your goals. But life is not always so simple and so great.
In May, during a training session, the coach told you that your mom had a heart attack at work. Her life wasn't in danger, but they allowed you to leave earlier. At the hospital, the doctor told you that your mom overworked, and this was certainly caused by the stress. Your mom didn't tell you, but you knew she worked more than necessary to be sure she could attend your game without any work left to be able to celebrate with you every time you win.
But the worst happened when the doctor told you that she would need an aldut around to make sure it didn't happen. Another adult—that was the problem. You never really met your father; your mom divorced him when she learned that he cheated on her when she was pregnant. Of course you could call your grandma, but she was in Netherland, and you knew she was a little too old to keep an eye on you and your mom, and then the only available option was your aunt Marina.
After you called your aunt, she immediately booked a flight. You knew that in this situation, you had to do something you would probably regret your whole life. You had a meeting with the coaching staff to ask them something, and just before your last match, you had your response: at the end of the season, after only a few matches, you'd be a free agent and leave the country.
The girls knew nothing about that—well,  maybe just one, but you knew that if you had told her, she would make you doubt, but you couldn't. It was only when you were at the airport that you wished her good luck for the next season and told her about your departure.
2019/20
It's been more than two years since you left Germany. Of course, at first things weren't easy; you spent the first part of the 2019–2020 season literally jobless. You didn't have clubs; you continued to train on your own, but you spent almost all your time helping your aunt at her work. That was like this until you ran into someone you didn't expect to see after all these months: Vivianne Miedema, and she wasn't alone; she was with Jill Roord and Danielle Van De Donk.
Of course you knew who the forward was; she was literally one of your models when you started your career, but what you didn't know was that she knew you. After a few talks, you explained to her why you were not in Germany and, more importantly, why you hadn't played since the start of the season.
They were truly sorry for you and said they wished they could do anything, but you assured them that they couldn't do anything for that and that you would eventually try to found a new club even if you had to spend the rest of the season training by yourself. Apparently they decided to take things in her perfectly because only a few days later you received an unexpected call to let you know that after the three Dutch players talked about you to their head coach, Arsenal was open to giving you a chance, but you'd have to wait until the winter transfer window to offiacilize everything wich you accepted without thinking.
Until then, you continued your routine: help your aunt in her job—well, being not really qualified for it meant you just moved boxes all day, and after that, you spent some time with your mom and sneaked out in the night to train. That was like this until you signed. In Germany, Lena was attracting the interest of a few clubs when she saw the news. She wasn't really attracted to the WSL until then, and honestly, if it weren't for random posts on her Instagram feed, she would surely have missed it.
The midfielder wanted to call you to tell you that she was proud and happy for you that you could play again after what happened, but she knew you wouldn't reply. It was selfish, but since you moved, you gradually stopped speaking to your ex-teammates. At first, you said to yourself that was because you would probably drop the football a few months after you landed in London, but you finally accepted the reality. You didn't want to have anything that reminded you of the incident, but you were also too cowardly to say all the things you never said to her.
Your debuts were pretty good; of course you started on the bench, but when the coach gave you your chance, you took it. You even scored in your first London derby against Chelsea, and even if you lost, everyone could see that you were more talented than anyone else. But unfortunately, COVID came, and with that, the end of the season.
2022/23
A lot of things happened during those three years: first, your mom found a new job in your aunt's company; second, you signed another deal with the London club; and finally, the most important thing: you made your first steps for your national team. Being a Dutch player raised in Germany, the two federations wanted you in their team, but you decided to represent your mom and also spend more time with Viv, who had basically become your big sister since you joined the Gunners.
And it was with your oranje kit that you properly saw Lena for the first time in almost four years. Yes, Arsenal faced Wolfsburg last season in Champions League, but you were injured, so you couldn't play. During your pitch inspection, you noticed someone staring at you. You tried to distract yourself by talking with Esme and Vicky, but you were cut off when Lynn and Jill said that some of their Wolfsburg teammates wanted to meet you.
If Viv was your calm and collected big sister, Jill otherwise wanted to be the cool one. She always did some dumb thing to make you smile and see her as cool as she was. Lynn quickly grew into a very close friend of yours, even with the distance. After reluctantly agreeing, you made your way with the two girls to the German players.
Here you were in front of Lina Magull and Sydney Lohmann, who just got kicked out of the Champions League because of you, but like Jill said, there were also some Wolfsburg players, and that's how you found yourself shyly waving to Alex Popp, Feli Rauch, Svenja Huth, Jule Brand, and the only real familiar face, Lena Oberdorf.
Except for Viv (who was not there), Jill, and Dom (who knew how to put two and two together), nobody really knew about you and Lena. Well,  some knew you played together, but nobody knew you were very close friends, and you messed up (almost) everything after you moved to London.
"Guys, this is Y/n, she's a little shy, but she's very good on the pitch." Jill introduced you proudly.
"We already know that." Lina said, and you looked at your feet.
"Sorry," you mumbled, "but you are very good too." You added a little, unsure of what else you could say.
"Wait, are you the same Y/n who played for Essen with Lena?" Jule asked, and when you saw Jill smirk, you knew it was something she planned.
"Uh, yeah." You looked at Lena "Yeah, it was a good moment." You smiled lightly, but it was enough to be noticed by the midfilder. Something in you wanted to pull her away from anyone and tell her that you were sorry about everything, but before that, you had a game to play.
The game went pretty well, even if you lost only 1-0. You showed one of your best performances on the pitch until you got subbed off. After the final whistle, you made your way to congregate with the opponents. When Sydney asked for a jersey swap, you accepted, and the Bayern player was floating in your jersey. Her teammates didn't miss the opportunity to comment on what made Lena feel something—something she thought she had been above for a while now.
In the tunnel, you were talking with Dom when Lena came, slightly interrupting you, but the older Dutch player didn't seem to be bothered by that. "Can we talk?" She asked, and you nodded before following her. "So..." she started before pausing for a moment. "You played really well."
"Thanks, you too. It reminds me of when we were in the old time." You responded and almost instantly cringed at your word choice "Well, it's not that we're so old or anything; it's just that..."
"It's just that it's been a while since we've seen each other."
"Yeah, that's it." There was a little silence after your reply, like you were both processing what you just said.
"You...you've changed a lot since 2019."
"Uh, yeah, I grew up a little."
"And you did a little work out?"
"Oh that's? It's a funny story; when I went to London, I was free of any club, and I started to work for my aunt's company, but she just assigned me to the physical job, and after I signed for Arsenal, I kept doing this, and here I am now." You chuckled lightly at the end.
"I think it's funny that when we were little, I was the one who looked like a boy, and now look at you...you're...handsome." You lowered your head, hoping that Lena didn't see you blush at her compliment.
"Thanks, you are beautiful too." Now it was her turn to blush. "Maybe one day we should—" you couldn't finish your sentence before Alex called her teammate "I think it's our cue to leave," you said, and she nodded and quickly hugged you before she left.
Later this night, you sent her a DM on Instagram. You talked a lot, and before you forgot, you gave her your new phone number. Back in London, you were still in your little cloud until Vicky reminded you that your next opponent in the Champions League would be Wolfsburg, but before that, you had a game against Manchester United, where you unfortunately lost Leah.
At the end of April, you were in Germany, ready to play one of the biggest games of the season. The two teams made their way onto the pitch, and like everyone except  you were on the starting eleven. It was funny to see you being almost taller than every player, knowing that you were one of the younger. Your job today was to stop Sveindis' offensive and try to assist Stina in the box.
What should be a hard game became almost impossible when you were tackled by Lena for the first time rather early in the match. Lying on the grass, you took a moment to stand up until two people held you theirs hands. You unconsciously took one of them, and instantly, when your skin touched others, you felt a familiar warmth. On your feet, you were not disappointed when you saw Lena in front of you. She seemed a little worried, but you reassured her with a smile and a gentle tap on her shoulder. That was something she used to do every time an opponent was rough with you, and it became your thing to show that you cared about each other.
The match didn't go as planned, but you still gained a draw before the game at the Emirates. Back in London, you proposed to Lena that you see her before the next game. You told her that your mom wanted to see her. You felt relieved when she finally accepted, and now you had to wait a week to see her.
One week later, you were in your bedroom, emptying your wardrobe with Viv and Beth, trying to choose an outfit for the day. "Well, why don't you try the outfit that Daan brought you for your birthday?" the Dutch asked.
"I lost it," you instantly replied.
"How can you—" Beth started before being interrupted by another voice.
"Y/n always lost or forgot things," Jill said throught your phone. She proposed to help you with Lynn, so you facetimed them a few minutes ago, but they were more focused on whatever the young Dutch was watching on her phone. "Do you remember when she almost forgot her boots before a Champions League game?"
"Oh, come on, it was once," you groaned.
"Yes, but if Viv wasn't there, you would have spent the game on the bench." Beth reminded you.
"Okay, I think we got it; now can we focus on the really important thing?"
"Yeah, girls, let's focus. We're talking about Y/n's first date since a while." Lynn said, and you groaned again.
"It's not a date; it's just a lunch with my mom." You said.
"It's not?" The two girls thought the phone asked at the same time. "So why do you need us to pick an outfit?" Jill added.
"Because...because I promised to my mom that I'd try to wear something other than a jogger, and it's been a long time since I spent a whole time almost alone with Lena, so I want to look good."
"If you want to look good, you can just go without a shirt." Jill joked, making Lynn and Beth laugh, while Viv just sighed. Sorry, but well, you built a good body, so why not show her?"
"Is that even a serious question?" Viv asked while you picked some clothes in the big bazaar.
"Okay, I'll be right back," you said before exiting the room. The girls were talking until you received a text from Lena. Well, from what your teammates could see, 'Obi💪🧸'.
Obi💪🧸:
Ich bin auf dem Weg (I'm on my way)
You came back just when Viv was about to call you. Your two Arsenal teammates looked at you; they didn't say anything; they just let you get a little unsure if it was a good choice of cloth, but when you were about to speak, you heard Lynn and Jill cheering you on the other side of the phone.
"Go catch the girl," the midfielder said, and you rolled your eyes before you took your phone and saw the text from Lena. You didn't wait more before you left a little anxious, even if you didn't know why.
This afternoon was perfect; your mom was more than happy to see Lena again, and she didn't miss embarrassing you in front of her. When you drove her back to her hotel, you took some time to apologize about your departure a few years ago, but she told you that it was okay because she knew you couldn't do something about that. And after that, there was the game in London.
-----
At the end of the game, you lost 2-3. You were more than gutted, of course; you conced a goal in the last minutes of extra time. The Wolfsburg players came to congratulate you, and even if you found it cruel, you were still professional. Dom stayed with you until she was sure you were okay. Of course, Viv, Jill, and Lynn also came to check on you. You were trying not to be too emotional when Lena approached you. The Dutch players exchanged a look and gave you a quick glance to make sure you were alright before they let you with the German midfielder.
In this moment, a lot of thought invaded Lena's mind. She wanted to hug you to tell you it was okay and you fought pretty well, but she also knew that as someone who plays to win, it was not something she would want to hear herself. So she just gently rubbed your arm and gave you a weak smile. It was fascinating that even after all these years, she still understood you so much. "It was a tough game," she said, and you nodded. "I'm very happy and proud to see you play again, even if it would be better if we played together."
"You can come play here," you remarked, making her look at you with wide eyes. "I mean, if you want, of course. I don't want to force you to leave everyone; it's just that I miss playing with you too." You confessed, "And I'm sure you'd kill it in red." You joked.
"Thanks, but I'm not ready to leave my green shirt for now. But..." she started, making you raise your eyebrow to her. "But you can let me try yours to see if you're right." she explained. It took you some time to process what she meant, but when you did, you couldn't stop a little smile from appearing on your face.
"Very smooth, Oberdorf," you replied while you started to take off your shirt. Today was not particularly hot, but Lena sensed a hot wave rising in her body until it reached her face, and she started to blush. "And here for you," you said, holding her your shirt. Her eyes lost themselves a little on your tall figure before she took it and "maybe" brushed your fingers together on purpose.
She thanked you, and when she was about to take off hers, you stopped her. You didn't say anything until you quickly walked away toward Dom, who was talking with Feli. Lena had her eyes fixed on you through the entire process when you talked to the defender before she left you with her teammates and then came back with what seemed to be a Wolfsburg vest that she gave you, and you made your way back to your best friend.
"Where were you going?"
"I just needed that," you said, showing her the vest.
"For?" You covered her with her vest just enough to let her take off her shirt, protecting her from the public's view.
"Wow, did I miss an episode or something?" Vicky asked some players next to her when she saw what you did. The women around—who were basically all your team and some of Lena's teammates—turned their heads to where the Dutch were looking.
"Oh, Daan will really like that." Lynn was visibly excited to tell your national teammates that.
"Are they dating?" Gio asked.
"No, not yet, but don't worry," Jill said just loud enough to be heard by Dom, who was next to her and earning a strange look from Viv because of the expression she was making.
After your jersey swap, you walked with Lena to where you let almost everyone. You were close, but not close enough to permit anyone to misinterpret anything. Sometimes your arms would touch her while you were walking, and those little touches made you feel something deep in you. In the tunnel, you stopped her a little far away from the group, and the German looked at you with a confused look.
"Can you promise me something?" You started, and when she nodded, you continued, "Promise me that whatever happens in the final, you will not win."
"Yeah, I promise—wait, what?"
"Yeah, you heard me."
"But I want to win."
"And me too, but I want you to win the Champions League with me. That was your idea when we were little," you reminded her, and she laughed.
"I can't promise you that."
"Well, at least I tried," you joked. "More seriously, good luck for the final; I will come to see you."
"Thank you, and I wish you come. It would be different if you can't be there."
Later on the bus, Lena was questioned by a lot of her teammates. She knew that even if they were tired because of previous events, they wouldn't stop until they had their answers. But even if the German plaeyer was more than happy from your last interaction together, she felt like it was too soon to hope about something, despite all the teasing from her teammates and Jill's confession about the fact that she didn't see you so comfortable around someone other than Dom and Viv. While the midfielder was stuck with everyone's attention, the Dutch defender texted you, first to know how you were doing after you had to leave the pitch because of a bad tackle and then to ask you something about one of her next matches.
----
Two days later, you were told that your little injury would make you miss the next two games. You mentally cursed yourself because you knew when you went to the ball that you wouldn't avoid getting hit by the defender. Tryin not to overthink, you asked to take at least one week for you, which the coach was happy to give you. You used this week to help Laura and Leah with their injuries; you also spent some time with your mom and your aunt before you booked a flight to Germany. You don't know how, but your mom told you a few days prior that someone sent you a ticket for the DFB-Pokal final between Wolfsburg and Freiburg.
At the airport, you were surprised to see Lynn and Jill waiting for you. They helped you with your luggage, and they explained to you that the ticket was Dom's idea. Of course it was hers; she always perfectly knew how to read you, so when she saw how Lena talked about you and how you acted, she knew for you that somehow you may have the chance to finish what you couldn't a few years ago.
On the day of the final, the VfL locker room was more secretive than usual—at least that's what Lena was thinking. Except for Lena, all the players knew something special could have happened today. Sensing the weird atmosphere and some gazes on her, the midfielder asked Jule what was happening, but after a quick glance to her teammates, she found the courage to keep her mouth shut, even if it was more suspicious. But the short brunette didn't have too much time to think about it because they had to warm up before the kickoff.
The game started like usual, and at halftime, the two teams were 1-1. Even if the girls in black and green were a little pissed by the result, they were more concerned by something else: Lena hadn't spotted you in the crown yet. But it was a good thing; that meant she was totally focused on the game and nothing else. Back from the locker room, fifteen minutes later, you saw Lena talking with Sveindis, and the midfielder seemed to sense your eyes on her because she suddenly stopped and was about to search for a reason for this strange feeling, but she was met with Alex instantly. The striker looked at her teammates with a confused look before Lena shoved the strange feeling away and made herself ready for the second half.
Like you expected from them, Wolfsburg easily won at the end of full time. The joy quickly erupted from one side of the stadium, and of course, you were among the ones who were celebrating. After a few minutes, you waited for them to give both teams their medals and the cup for your best friend's teammates, and then you were escorted by a guy from security to the pitch to your own surprise. Once on the pitch, you were quickly dragged to the group of players by Lynn, and there you congratulated the girls until you found yourself behind a certain number 5. Ewa Pajor was talking to Lena until she saw you; she just looked at you and excused herself to her teammates.
A little confused Lena decided to search for Jule, but when she took a step back, she collided with someone, and when she turned around to apologize, she opened her mouth, but nothing came out. She blinked her eyes quickly, making you laugh, and when she heard your voice, she finally found her voice back. "What are you doing here?" she asked.
"Oh, rude. I thought you would be happy to see me," you replied.
She stood there for a moment, processing everything, and when she came back to her senses, she enveloped you in a tight hug. It took you by surprise, but you finished by reciprocating the hug. With her, everything seemed easier. The little touches, the confessions, the hugs and–and now it clicked in your mind, an almost forgotten feeling.
"I thought you wouldn't see me play until June, but wait, aren't you supposed to have a match this weekend?"
"Yeah, but thanks to a certain defender, I sprained my ankle, so I can't play for now, but I should be alright for the next week." You informed her.
"Oh, that sucks" she commented.
"Yeah, but I should be back in training the next Monday," you assured her.
"I see," she said, looking around to see a lot of eyes on her. "Uh, actually, it's cool that you are here because there is something I have wanted to ask you for a moment now."
"Uh, yeah, me too, actually." You smiled when you saw her surprised expression, but you couldn't brush away all the attention. "Do you mind if we go somewhere a little more calm?" She nodded, and you followed her a little farther in the tunnel. You stood there for a few seconds without saying anything; you were just admiring her. "So, first, congratulations for your victory; it was a great game; you played very well, like always." She blushed at your praise, "but I'm here for another thing. I want to tell you something, but please don't interrupt me until I finish, right?" After a little hesitation, she nodded.
"Okay, I don't know where to start, so I'll just start from the beginning. I wanted to apologize again for letting you go without telling you anything a few years ago. I know you already accept my excuses, but I need to tell you why I did what I did. At first, I planned to ask you out for the end of the season, and then it happened what happened but I didn't have the courage to talk to you about it because I feared that somehow you would reject me, so I used my travel as an excuse to stop talking to you. But then, there was this friendly game when I saw you, and when you didn't seem to be angry by that, I realized that I messed up. And after that, there was our first game in the Champions League, and my crush for you came back. Well,  it's not really a crush; it's a strongest feeling. It's like I'm–"
"In love?" Lena interrupted you.
"Uh, yeah, but how do you?"
"Because I feel it too. Honestly, I should be angry about everything, and I was when you left me, but then I learned what happened with your mom and I saw you play for Arsenal, and it was like all the anger dissipated because I had seen you for a long time and you seemed happy. I wanted to ask you out too before you moved out, but I never had the chance. I don't even know how long I've fallen in love for you, but I don't know it's—I don't know."
"It's easy?" You asked, and her look told you that it was exactly what she was searching for. "Me too. I don't know why, but it's so easy to fall for you. I don't know if it's because of your eyes, your smile, your heart, or everything, but yeah, I love you. So, after four years, I can finally say this: Lena, would you go with me tonight on a date?"
The midfielder wrapped her arms around your neck before slowly approaching your face. She gave you enough time to push her, but when you didn't, she kissed you. You only pulled appar when you needed some oxygen, and Lena was giving one of her brightest smiles.
"So?" you asked when you remembered she didn't give you a proper answer.
"I would love to."
"Great, I'll pick you up at 7 p.m." you said before quickly pecking her lips when you heard some footsteps coming in your direction. Lena's teammates found you totally engulfed in Lena's little body. You saw Jill and Lynn exchanging excited faces while Dom seemed to be proud of her work.
After the team saw the two of you, you were required by almost all the youngest players and Jill to explain what happened. Dom stayed behind with a blushing Lena: "I told you," the denfender told her. The midfielder just looked at her and gave her a hug to thank her.

I wouldn’t have left the house past 39 weeks if I didn’t need to, but my Grandfathers funeral wasn’t one I was willing to compromise on. We have the hospital bag in the car, but have agreed to get in the funeral car with my family to ride over to the parlour. Which I’m already uneasy about.
It’s a rough day already, but Mom is fussing over the flowers and my Grandma is worrying that family members from overseas won’t make it, my aunt, as usual is just sat there and there’s so many things to get ready.
“I’ve got that” I sigh as I go and help my Grandma with all of her things to take “it’ll be okay, you know, I know it’s not what you want to hear but he was 98 and is resting happily now” I say as I take her into my arms, rubbing her back “I’ve got you” I whisper. “You shouldn’t even be here, you’ve got enough happening.. I don’t want to rely on you to do anything” she tears up. “I want to do whatever I can” I assure her before heading off with her bag.
“Ready?” I sigh as we head out to the car. Luckily, my wife and I have a whole area on the back row and I look at her with a sigh “I don’t know why I agreed to the obituary” I say as I rub my bump in small circles. “You’ll be amazing, you always are” she smiles.
The journey is short and sweet but as we get to the roundabout, there’s a fuss from up front. “Wo-woahhh!” The driver shouts before we all get jolted back, jerking our bodies forward as the seatbelts pull us back. My heart jumps into my throat as I feel my body being tugged and thrown. “Baby!” My wife shouts as she turns to me, checking straight away on my facial expression. “I-I’m fine, I’m fine, are you?” I ask and she nods “I’m okay.. baby okay?” She asks and I rub softly feeling a little kick and I nod “baby’s fine”.
“Everyone okay?” The driver asks and everyone is fine, but when he gets out, he sees that all of the bonnet is crushed. “Okay, I need to order a taxi for all of you, on us obviously” he sighs heading off to call them and I look at my phone checking the time “we have twenty minutes”. “It’s a ten minute walk, can we just get there? Madge?” My wife asks my Nan and she nods but I feel the heaviness in my body grow. “Baby, I don’t know” I say quietly and she nods “okay, let’s see the taxi times”.
“They won’t be here for another twenty” he explains. I just get out of the car and start walking, knowing we have no choice. “Lena!” my wife, Blair calls and I look back “come on” I sigh.
The walk is quick but painful and I feel movements in places I haven’t felt them before. We get there with a few minutes spare and I find the nearest bench, sitting straight away and putting my hair up. “I like your hair down” Gran sighs and I shake my head “too hot” I mutter. “Baby, do you need water? Anything?” Blair asks and I just shake my head. “Back rubs” I say softly letting her give me some love.
“Family?” The director addresses and I look to Blair “I need a minute, you go in..” I sigh and know I have to go in. “Come on I’ve got you” she says holding her hand out. I stand up and as I do I feel my inner thighs warm up under my dress. “My waters” I mutter, grabbing the bench “My waters just broke” I whisper and they are met with so much pain in my back, I find myself bent over the bench taking long deep breaths.
“Not now baby, not now” I whisper. “Lena! Blair! Come on” Gran demands and I look to Blair pleading for help. “Right, let’s get you in there, I know you’d kill me if I let you leave” she sighs as she supports my back, guiding me in.
We are the champions by queen plays on the speakers as I walk towards the front row, passing people who notice the flushed colour of my skin and sweat droplets on my forehead. “Let me help” Blair whispers as we get to the seats and it’s a good thing she helps because I couldn’t have got down on my own.
The service is nice and luckily, the contractions are slow and I’m able to breathe quietly through them, but one hits so hard that all I feel I can do is open my legs a little and cry so I can let some frustration out, normal in a funeral I guess. “And Lena has some words to say..” the director announces. Shit.
I fumble up to the top, standing in front of the room filled with hundreds of friends, family and acquaintances of my Grandfather. Clearing my throat as I open the paper I start to talk. “My Grandfather would be over the moon with the turn out, he always said that-“ I start well but the pain comes over me like a wave. “He said that-“ I start and find my hands gripping the stand. “He-“ I mutter before I just buckle, my knees give out and I find myself being caught by the director as he lowers me to the ground.
“I’m here, sweetheart, I’m here” my wife announces as she gets to the front. The pain is making me pant uncontrollably and I’m not keeping it a secret anymore. “Do the speech” I mutter to her and she shakes her head “do it, please” I cry as I lean against a wall, panting and shaking.
She stands and delivers, better than I probably would have. Everyone is distracted anyway, by me, legs parted, sweating and panting, slightly covered by the coffin. The final music starts and I look up, seeing people leave, trying to catch a glance of what I’m doing. “I’m here, I’m here” she states as she comes to my attention. “I’ve called an ambulance” a member of staff announces and I just shake my head “there’s no time”.
“It’s okay, I’ve had 3, she’s had 2” the staff member says as she comes over. “Towels, water and scissors” she demands of the director and I look to my wife, tears in my eyes “thank you for doing that” I smile and she laughs, rubbing my belly and taking my underwear off. “Come on, let’s have a baby” she smiles.
“Shit, you’re.. like, open” she whispers as she gazes between my legs. “I know” I say as I grab my thigh, panting in and out. “Can I push?” I ask softly and she looks to the women “yes, you absolutely can” one of them laughs. “O-okay” I mumble as I scrunch my face up, taking a breath and baring down for the first time ever. “Nnnnggg” I groan quietly, feeling movement but no spreading.
“Okay, like you’re doing a poo” the woman smiles and I look to Blair grabbing her hand and squeezing “nngaahahh!” I cry out, taking some quick rounded breaths after letting it out. “Pick her leg up” one of the women demand to my wife and I shake my head “I need her” I moan and the other woman takes a leg, pushing back.
“Mmmphhh” I cry out “I can’t fucking do it” I cry and my wife smiles “You! Are Lena fucking Lovell, you can do anything” she laughs.
“Gaaaaah!” I cry, feeling myself split. “Am I tearing?” I ask and the woman between my legs shakes her head “I’m Mel” she laughs and I nod “thank you Mel” I smile before baring down again “ccccaaaaah!” I screech “that’s it, harder sweetheart, you’re doing it” she smiles and I shake my head before pulling my other leg back and giving everything I’ve got “GAAAHHH!” I cry out feeling a pop “fuck” I moan, trying to catch my breath.
“Heads here” she smiles “again” she demands and I shake my head “I need a break”. “You’re doing amazingly baby, you’re so beautiful” Blair smiles lovingly and I laugh, wiping my head. “I love you” I whisper and she smiles “I love you too”.
I find myself getting up onto my knees, leaning forward “sorry” I mumble and the woman smiles “you’re in control” she says softly.
“Fuck.. fu-UUHHH” I cry out, feeling the shoulders stretch me out “ohhhh, oh god” I moan, reading down “come on baby, come out” I whisper as I tug a little. “Come on, work with mommy” I whisper. “Baby, you catch” I instruct Blair as I hold on to the stand. “Ready?” I whisper before letting out a huge scream “aahhhhhhh!” I howl as I feel the baby leave my body and splash into my loves arms, followed by the sweetest cries.
“Oh my god..” she whispers “you did it” I hear her sob before the two women help me on to my back a little propped up. “It’s a boy” Blair grins, handing him to me “a boy” I grin, taking him into my arms “oh your great grandfather would love you” I smile. “Trevor?” My wife smiles, my grandfathers name. “Trevor?” I whisper to baby as I kiss Blair softly.

sorry if you’ve answered this before, but what made you go into nursing?
In 2016 Donald Trump got elected, which was not what I was expecting to happen and a bit of a disappointment, to put it very very lightly. I was 25 and basically been bumming around my parents' house working as a barista when me and Cyrus weren't traveling and living in a van. We had plans for the future, but they were more "where do we wanna live" rather than "what do you wanna do?" Once he got elected, it didn't feel right sticking to the same plan. I felt I had to do something different with my life, something that mattered and helped people and offset the harm that would come and that had already come.
So I thought about the stuff that I valued most (having a job that helps people, having a concrete positive effect and being able to see it, maintaining access to care, reproductive health, advocating for people who aren't in a position to effectively advocate for themselves, intersectional feminism), and I thought about the stuff that has always interested me intellectually (public health, narratives of caregiving and illness, the history of the AIDS epidemic, people I don't know anything about, how people behave in extraordinary moments, my mom and aunt's nursing stories), and I thought about a bunch of practical concerns (didn't want to take work home with me, good paycheck, good job security, a lot of different uses from one degree, I'd be able to get my nursing degree in an accelerated second degree program for very cheap if I arranged things right*, worst case scenario it would give me something to write about).
It also matters a lot that my mom is a nurse and so fucking passionate about nursing, and that I admire my mom tremendously. Meanwhile my aunt, who I also admire, was an ESL teacher in an underfunded district, and I saw how passionate she was as well, and I saw how much work she took home every night and weekend and how much of her personal money she poured into her work. Seeing the life of teachers up close eliminated teaching as a career course. So nursing made the most sense. I was in community college taking my pre-reqs by the time Trump was sworn into office.
I did home health nursing because that's what I could get hired for as a new grad, and now I do bedside hospital nursing because it pays more, it's easier to get time off, I get to talk to other people, and it gives me a lot of skills I can take to wherever I go to next. I've been a nurse now longer than I was in school to become a nurse, which was one of my most basic career goals, and I have a lovely apartment, and don't worry too much about day-to-day finances, and when I come home from work I'm usually proud of what I've done that day. And best of all, it's literally impossible for me to do my job from home. They can't make me. The patients aren't in my lovely apartment. On the whole, I'm very satisfied with how all this has been working out.
(*I'm very sorry to say the circumstances which allowed me to do this are basically unrepeatable for the layperson and rely heavily on your mother being a nursing school instructor, and your family being willing and able to support you as you completely cease making money so you can become a legal dependent again and be eligible for your parent's tuition reimbursement. I can offer no advice here, just gratitude to my parents for helping me out so much.)

It had been a long few days, and overhearing Strauss reprimand Aaron tips Emily over the edge.
-x-
Hi friends,
This is based on a prompt that the lovely @hancydrewfan sent me. She asked for a fic where Emily yells at Strauss and I simply couldn't resist.
Hope you like this bestie <3
-x-
Words: 3.k
Warnings: minor injury/broken bone
Read over on Ao3, or below the cut
The moment Emily sees Jess’s number flash up on her phone she knows something is wrong.
It was an agreement they’d had ever since Emily had gone back to work after having Hazel three years ago. Jessica looked after both Hazel and Jack when Aaron and Emily were away on cases, and she’d call every night just before the little girl went to bed so they could say goodnight. She never called during the day unless something had happened, and even then it was usually a text - like when Jack was recently sent home from school after he picked up the flu that eventually took down the entire family
Her heart drops into her stomach and she swallows thickly, pushing down the wave of anxious nausea that threatens to overwhelm her. The sound of the precinct she’s standing in, the team’s voices as they deliver the profile they’d worked on for days, disappears, and all she can hear is the sound of her own heartbeat, loud and pounding in her head.
She looks up at the rest of the team, and briefly makes eye contact with her husband as she nods behind her and she holds up her phone, indicating that she’s stepping away. She walks quickly to an empty hallway, making sure she answers before the call rings out.
“Jess, hi, is everything okay?” She says, speaking so quickly that her words trip over each other. She had always prided herself on being able to control her emotions, the skills she’d learnt when she was also learning to talk, but any time her children were involved in something she felt torn open. Like a walking raw nerve that was an easy target, everything she’d spent years knowing how to suppress and push down suddenly on display for everyone to see.
“Hi Emily,” Jess replies, sounding stressed. Emily can hear Hazel crying in the background, her words broken up as she begs to see her mommy, and Emily is sure she can feel her heart breaking in her chest.
“Is that Hazel? What’s wrong?” She asks, hearing the desperation in her own voice, her jaw tight as she clenches her teeth to stop herself from crying.
“I’m so sorry, she fell off the jungle gym in the park and she’s hurt her arm,” Jess says, her voice slightly shaky, “I’ve brought her to the hospital and they think it’s broken so they are about to do an x-ray.”
Emily nods even though Jess can’t see her, and she wipes away the stray tear that escaped her lashline, “Okay, I’ll get on the next flight out of here. Thankfully it isn’t far. I’ll let you know when I should get there.”
“I’ll keep you up to date on what the doctors say. I swear I was watching her, it just happened so fast-”
“Jess, it’s okay,” Emily says, “It’s not your fault these things happen,” she blows out a shaky breath, “Can I talk to her?”
“Of course,” Jess replies. There’s a moment of just background noise as Jess moves the phone, her words quieter as she talks to Hazel, “Want to talk to Mommy?”
It’s quiet for a second and then Emily hears her little girl's voice, “Mama?”
“Hi sweet girl,” she says, injecting more enthusiasm than she feels into her voice, not wanting her to know how upset she was, “How are you feeling?”
Her answer is a hiccup, “My arm hurts.”
She bites the inside of her cheek to stop herself from crying, “I know it does baby, I’m going to come home to see you so I’ll kiss it all better when I get there.”
“You coming home?”
She wipes away another tear at the hope in her daughter’s voice and nods, “Yes, I’m coming home. So you listen to Aunt Jess and the doctor’s until I get there.”
“Yes Mama,” Hazel sniffs, “Love you.”
“I love you too, baby. Pass the phone back to Aunt Jess, okay?”
“Okay.”
She reiterates her plans with Jess, confirming she’d let her know when she had a flight sorted and she hangs up. She starts to walk back towards the main bullpen, her phone still in her hand as she already looks up flights, and she walks straight into her husband.
Aaron frowns at her, his hands on her shoulders as he holds her in place, “Em, you okay? You’ve been gone a little while”
“Jess called,” she says, swallowing thickly as he immediately tenses, “Hazel fell off the jungle gym, they think her arm is broken.”
He tightens his grip on her shoulders, his stomach churning with guilt and sadness that his little girl was hurt and he was hundreds of miles away. He knows his wife well enough to understand that she is barely holding it together. Her jaw was tight, as were her shoulders, and her dark eyes were shining at him, tears she wouldn’t shed until much later when they saw their daughter gathering in her eyes.
“I’ll get Derek to take point here so we can go home,” he says, immediately slipping into practical mode, he looks down at her phone clasped in her hand and sees the available flights, “Is there one soon?”
She nods and clears her throat, “Yeah, there’s one in about 90 minutes. I figured that would give me enough time to get to the hotel and then to the airport.”
“Perfect, book it and I’ll go talk to the team.”
He turns to leave and she grabs his arm, her brain finally kicking in, “We’re still in the middle of a case, Aaron. Should we both leave? She’ll be okay once she’s got a cast-”
“If you think I’m staying here when our little girl is in the hospital I’m going to ask them to check on you too when we get there,” he says, his voice serious as he smiles at her softly, the small half-smile that showed off one of his dimples that he reserved just for her, “We’re both going,” he squeezes her hand, “Nothing is more important to me than you and the kids, the team can handle the case.”
There were times when it made her sad they hadn’t been together longer, that she’d lost out on so much time with him. It was hard being his second wife, hard knowing that he’d loved someone before, that he still loved Haley and always would, and sometimes she wished it was simpler. That they’d made something of that summer decades ago now that neither of them ever spoke about until they got together, but then Jack wouldn’t exist, and she couldn’t imagine her life without the boy she loved as if he was her own.
But then there were moments like this when she was grateful everything had worked out as it had. Where he’d learnt from the mistakes of his past, the things he wished he could undo in his relationship with Haley, things he still carried the regret for to this day. Emily had never for a second doubted that she and the kids were the centre of Aaron’s world, more important than the job that had almost cost him everything.
“Okay,” she says, more relieved than she’ll admit, grateful she’ll have him with her during the flight home, “I’ll book the flights.”
He smiles and leans in to stamp a kiss against her cheek, a show of affection they’d never usually exchange at work, and he squeezes her hand once more before he pulls away, “I’ll speak to Derek. We’ll leave in ten minutes, okay?”
She nods, her focus already back on her phone looking at flights, the extortionate cost not registering. She’d buy a damn plane if it meant getting home to her little girl.
“Ten minutes.”
___
It’s a rough few days.
She felt on edge, the guilt bubbling in her stomach only getting worse every time she looked at her daughter and saw the bright pink cast she had on her forearm. It made Emily ache every time she looked at it, every time Hazel accidentally knocked it against something, her fearless energy already back after she’d been cautious for a few days.
Emily yawns as she pours herself a coffee and she smiles as JJ walks over and she passes her the coffee pot.
“How is Hazel?” JJ asks sympathetically
“She’s doing better than I am I think,” she says, exchanging a small smile with her friend, “She is sleeping in our bed though. I can barely say no to her at the best of times, let alone right now.”
JJ chuckles, “And you say Hotch is the pushover.”
Emily laughs, “We both are. That little girl has the whole family wrapped around her little finger,” she says, smiling softly, “Especially Jack. He made an arm cast for her teddy bear.”
“That is the cutest thing I have ever heard.”
Emily’s smile fades as she looks past her friend and sees Strauss walking into Aaron’s office, a determination in her step that rarely meant anything good for the BAU.
She groans, “What do you think she wants?” She asks as she looks at her friend, her frown only deepening as she watches JJ scrunch up her nose, a tell she had that lets Emily know she wasn’t telling her something, “What is it?”
JJ winces, “Derek got a call from Strauss when we were still there, asking why she’d been told he’d been assigned head of the case,” she says, carefully choosing her words, “When he told her that you had both flown home she was…not impressed.”
Emily clenches her teeth, her grip on her coffee cup tightening so much she’s surprised she doesn’t break it as she looks back at Aaron’s office. She can see them through the window. Aaron is standing but still behind his desk, and Strauss is on the other side, her hands on her hips as she talks, the tension in the room palpable even from this distance.
All the effort that Emily had spent days putting into holding herself together disappears, all of her sadness and guilt turning into fury, burning her from the inside out. She looks at JJ and smiles tightly before placing her coffee cup down.
“Excuse me,” she says before she walks away, a determination in her step. She clenches her fists at her sides, digging her nails into her palms in an attempt to feel anything other than the anger rolling in her gut. She ignores Spencer and Derek as she walks past them, the latter’s comment that she seemed annoyed barely registering as she walks up the stairs to Aaron’s office. When she’s close enough, she can hear what Strauss is saying, and she pauses outside the door to listen in.
“You left your team at a critical point of a case, this is unacceptable Agent Hotchner and you know it.”
“With all due respect, Ma’am, my daughter was in hospital-”
“With a broken arm, something you knew before you left. I might have been able to understand if she’d been more seriously-”
It’s all Emily can bear to listen to, and before she can stop herself she’s opening the door, cutting off the Section Chief before she can say anything else, “If she’d been more seriously what?”
Aaron steps out from behind the desk, his own irritation at how he was being spoken to, the dressing down he didn’t have the energy for, disappearing the moment he sees how angry his wife is. She’d been on edge for days, and he had anticipated that she’d cry, guilt for not being there for Hazel when she was hurt finally winning out. He hadn’t seen this coming. And he just hoped they’d both still have a job when they walked away from it.
“Emily,” he says diplomatically, “Maybe-”
“No,” she says, cutting him off, ignoring the fact he was not just her husband here but her boss too. She looks back at Strauss, “I want to hear her say it. What would have been an acceptable way for my three-year-old to have been hurt for you to understand why her father needed to be there too?” She asks, staring the other women down, “A head injury? Car accident? Coma?”
Aaron steps closer to her again, the mere idea of either of their kids being hurt that way making his stomach churn, “Em-”
“I want to hear her say it,” she repeats, still not looking at her husband, her eyes burning into Strauss’s so intensely she’s surprised the other woman hasn’t burst into flames, “What would have been acceptable?”
Strauss clears her throat, finally finding her voice as she straightens her back, “Agent Prentiss, I think you’d do well to remember I am your superior.”
Emily chuckles dryly, “I think you’d do well to remember you’re a parent too,” she says bitterly, “Our daughter was hurt, she still is. We had a duty as parents to-”
“You had a duty to your job-”
“Our children will always come first,” she shouts, not caring that by now everyone in the bullpen was watching them, “And if you can’t understand that I feel bad for your children.”
It’s a low blow and she knows it, but she doesn’t try and stop herself. She’d spent so much of her life promising herself that she’d never be like her own mother, and she knew it had made her extra defensive. She wanted her children to know they were loved, that nothing came ahead of them, and the fact Strauss was attempting to make her and Aaron doubt that and their parenting choices was only adding fuel to the fire.
Strauss swallows thickly, her jaw tight as she turns to look at Aaron, “It’s just a warning this time. But if you pull this again without talking to me first there will be consequences,” she turns to look at Emily, “Agent Prentiss, you on the other hand are suspended for one week without pay for insubordination.”
Emily scoffs and presses her lips together, rolling her eyes as she crosses her arms over her chest. She looks at the other woman for a moment and considers her options, clearing her throat before she steps closer.
“You’ve tried to fire us both before, now we’re apparently essential to the team,” she says, shrugging her shoulders, “Maybe you should make up your mind.”
Strauss raises an eyebrow at her, “Two weeks. No pay,” she looks between them and heads towards the door, “I think I’d better leave before you make it three.”
Strauss walks out of the room and leaves them standing there in silence, the small gap between them from where Aaron had been slowly edging towards them feeling briefly much larger than the few feet it was. Emily clears her throat and looks at her husband before she looks down at the floor, suddenly worried he’d be mad at her for jumping in to defend him and ultimately making things worse for herself.
“I’ll meet you in the car,” she says, turning and leaving the room before he can say anything.
She has to suppress a smile as she walks past the team, Penelope’s whispered enthusiasm following her out of the bullpen.
“Okay, that was the coolest thing I have ever seen.”
___
He smiles as he walked into the living room to find Emily and Hazel snuggled on the couch. The little girl is fast asleep, her face pressed into her mother’s neck and her broken arm resting on a cushion Emily had gently placed under it.
“Want me to take her up?” He asks, careful to stay quiet and he smiles as she shakes her head, already aware that was going to be her answer.
“No, she’s okay here for a while,” Emily replies as he sits down next to them, “Is Jack okay?”
Aaron nods as he wraps his arms around them, careful not to knock Hazel’s arm, “Yes all of his math homework is done and now he’s playing his video game,” he says, kissing Emily’s temple, “Next time you’re helping him though.”
She chuckles wryly, “I told you a long time ago honey, I will help with anything except math. I barely enjoyed it when I was at school.”
“I’ve seen pictures of you when you were at school, sweetheart. I think the only thing you enjoyed was Siouxsie and the Banshees.”
She narrows her eyes at him, “One day I’m going to kill Penelope Garcia for showing you those photos.”
He kisses her, smiling into it before he pulls away, and he cups her cheek, “Can I ask you something?”
She nods, turning her head to kiss his palm before he lets his hand fall gently to her lap “Of course.”
“Were you…purposely making it worse with Strauss earlier?” He asks, raising his eyebrow at her when her eyes go wide before she looks away, her focus suddenly on Hazel’s sleeping face, “Because you were already suspended. And I saw the look on your face before you carried on, you were practically goading her into making it more than a week.”
She scrunches her nose up and groans, her cheeks warm with embarrassment as she continues to purposely avoid his gaze, “I…I may have thought that if I was going to be suspended it might as well be worth it,” she says, clearing her throat, “And this way, I’ll be home with her and Jack for a couple of weeks,” she adds, kissing Hazel’s forehead.
He smiles, his gut feeling that she’d taken the opportunity to spend more time with their children correct. He cups her chin and makes her look at him his smile soft as their eyes meet, “You’re an excellent mom, sweetheart.”
She smiles, her breath catching in her chest at the compliment. She’d needed to hear it more than she realised, needed the reassurance that not being here when Hazel had hurt herself didn’t take away from how good a mother she was.
“Thank you,” she says softly. She leans in to kiss his cheek, hoping he understands everything she hasn’t said. When she pulls back his smile is the only confirmation she needs.
“It’s true,” he says, squeezing her hand as he reaches for it, “Even if does make you a pain in the ass as an employee.”
“Aaron.”

I am seriously so saddened to realize people have used my name and my cat to steal money from some of you. This is crazy, never, ever did I think that my Poppy would be used negatively.
Let’s give a little rundown of who we are. I’m Michelle, a 30-something year old married mama to 3 skin kittens, and 3 fuzzy kittens. One of my skin kittens is an adult, the other two are rapidly approaching attempting to leave the nest. I am disabled, physically and mentally which leads to emotionally, too. My fuzzy kittens help a lot with that.
2 summers ago, a friend texted me asking if I wanted a kitten. Of course I did. Then I found out she was a feral kitten that her mama had left behind because her one back leg was missing a foot, so she couldn’t climb and jump like the rest of the kittens were, and she was getting too heavy to carry in her mouth. That kitten now only have 3 legs, and is my Lucky baby.
Come early February of the next year, I saw on a friend’s aunts rescue site two of the most gorgeous little calico kittens I had ever seen. I claimed them before Valentine’s Day, even though I wouldn’t be able to get them until after Mother’s Day since they were slow to grow. They were attached at the hip, there was no way I could get one and not the other. Those were my Poppy girl and Millie moon.
That’s how I ended up with my fuzzy kittens. They are the best fuzzy kittens I have ever met. All 3 of them have a different job in calming me and my middle daughter down while in emotional crisis. Poppy is and has always been that calming rumble that you try to concentrate on instead of everything else that is happening. And it works more than anyone would believe.
Poppy is sick. My go fund me has all the explanations and updates you could ever need; I even have to add the email with the vet when she gets a chance to email back to me. I have endless pictures and videos to show she is my little love.
Please, if you can, share this post anywhere and everywhere, across all forms of social media. My follower numbers are so low, I’m surprised it’s not a negative number. I know a bunch of you got scammed, and I’m sorry. I really am. If I could make it better, I would.
Myself, I’ve even cut back some of my less essential but still needed medications so I have the money to get Poppy the treatment she deserves. I just need my baby girl to be better. It’s time sensitive because we honestly don’t know how much time she has left with her red blood cell count being in the low 10s percent wise (I think it was 13-14% last time, and it should be above 35). I am extremely transparent in what I show you all because if you are helping pay for it, I figure you have a right to see where the care is going and what it’s being used for.
We are trying to get the maximum amount of funding so we can get all the testing done because the liver and spleen are just as important as the bone marrow biopsy, but we will not look a gift horse in the mouth. Whatever we get it, it’s another cent that we didn’t have to scrounge around to find, another minute off the ever clicking clock.
Best ways to donate: to the hospital itself:

These account below are the only official ways to donate outside of the gofundme.
My email is listed below, and I am willing to answer any and all questions via email or on here, your choice.
Thank you so much for helping. It means everything to us.

hi i hope you dont mind but if you're not that busy is it okay if you write this? huhu thank you!
reader telling jjk men (geto, gojo, nanami, toji, choso) that they are preggo and they've been trying for a few years already and are already thinking of surrogacy. please please please this can be months after they have a miscarriage too!
a rainbow baby! 😭
Hi hon!!! Sorry this came so late I got a bit caught up with school than my mom and aunts wanted to have dinner so that’s what I did today! Tysm for the request! I try to remain as respectful as possible when I write requests like this or about sensitive topics so pls tell me if I misphrase or say anything poorly so I can correct it!!
Ps. I didn’t do choso because idk his personality well and I don’t know if I’m confident in writing him😭
Tumblr media
Tw- mentions of past miscarriages, rainbow baby, infertility, surrogacy, anything mentioned in the request, grief, (in Geto’s people besides parents try and explain death and miscarriage to the twins so reader gets upset)in gojos the pregnancy is both unplanned and not known about, birth, pregnant reader if your uncomfortable with anything relating to loosing a child/pregnancy I advise that you do not read this one! Pls let me know if I missed anything!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Geto
He took it hard, he loved the twins with his whole heart he truly did but he missed having babies to look after, maybe it was just baby fever but he felt like your little family wasn’t quite complete.
Unfortunately when you’d found the missing piece, it didn’t work out, unfortunately in your second trimester you had miscarried. You and Geto were both devastated, and everyone for a while everyone treated the two of you as ticking time bombs ready to explode at any moment.
The girls didn’t quite understand, they knew that they were supposed to have a sibling soon and now they weren’t going to but that was it, they couldn’t comprehend it yet and the amount of times you both had to stop people from explaining it to them horrified you.
This time when you’d fallen pregnant, you decided that maybe you two should keep this one a bit secret just in case, so when you’d first told Geto it was in the safety of your bedroom you’d sat beside him your hands behind your back before quickly pulling out the test.
“Are you serious” his voice is a bit quiet as it crackles.
You were his only weak spot, of course besides his children…but of course he would never let you know that…not like it was obvious or anything. He practically sobs when you give him a little nod, he lets out the same quiet muffled sobbing noise when he sees his son for the first time laid on your chest.
Tumblr media
Gojo
Honestly it hurt you a lot. His family was really into the idea of you carrying a biological heir, but sometimes it felt like you just weren’t capable of doing so. Honestly you’d started to even look into surrogacy because you couldn’t handle all the unfortunate things that continued to happen every time you would even talk about pregnancy.
When you’d been getting intense abdominal cramps you decided maybe you shouldn’t test it and checked yourself into the hospital, where you found out you were in labour, within the hour Gojo had arrived to see you sat up in the hospital bed with the cutest little baby girl laid on your chest. You smile dazedly as he stares down at the two of you in wonder.
“She’s real” he whispers as he touches the little fluffy whisper of hair she has. His fingers just barely graze her scalp and she scrunches and thats what triggers his tears.
Tumblr media
Nanami
It was just bad news after bad news, it was beginning to feel like maybe you shouldn’t have a baby at all. Of course when Nanami had heard you mutter this one night after you’d talked about trying for a baby again, he smiled guiltily, “if this doesn’t work there’s surrogacy or even adoption” he knows that you don’t want either of those, you want what everyone else is able to have, he can hear the way you cry in the bathroom after another negative test about how unfair it is and how cruel the world can be.
But this time there’s no crying no shouts of how unfair it is, there’s silence and Nanami at first thinks you’ve fallen and hurt yourself but when he hears your squeal he knows that isn’t the case.
He pushes the door open softly to see you holding the test you smile up at him as you show him the two little pink lines, “it’s positive” you tell him and it takes a moment to register but when it does he’s got a wide smile as he bends down softly peppering kisses along your face.
Tumblr media
Toji
He was rather reserved already but after you’d lost the baby, it became worse. Toji not only was reserved but he was reclusive, not eating dinner with you and Megumi not even greeting you anymore.
He’d come out at night and creep around the house to avoid seeing you two, he didn’t understand how to process the loss and had resorted to cutting off the world while he grieved.
One of these nights however he’s not quiet enough and you flicker on the lights, Toji is stood over the sink as he chugs down tap water.
“Toji” you call out, “Will you come to bed?” And when he lays down beside you it feels like heaven. He’s wrapped in your warm embraces as you whisper soft reassurances he doesn’t tell you that your comfort and soft touch made him cry long after you fell asleep.
Almost a year after that, you’d fallen pregnant, and Megumi was the one to help you tell him as he pranced around the house all day in a tee shirt that said big brother on it.
Honestly it was adorable and you loved seeing little Megumi be so happy when his dad furrowed his brows holding his boy up by the armpits to get a good look at what his shirt said glancing down to your belly than back to Megumi before his eyes meet yours.
“You’re serious?” He asks still holding up Megumi.
You give him a little nod paired with a nervous giggle and he sets Megumi down softly going over to hug you as Megumi continues to stomp around the kitchen.
Tumblr media
If anyone wants to see anything else pls let me know!! Omg guys!!! Do you want to see reader and maybe like teen Megumi?(reader is with Toji, but maybe like reader being a mom figure to Megumi and while he’s got a fever he unintentionally calls her mama, which he hadn’t done since he was really young?? And Toji like hugging reader a bit when she cries because she misses him being a baby and being affectionate???? I’m gonna sob someone request it pls???)

Hello, hello!! I’m back! I went and finally got to see the film in theaters (the first two times I watched it on Peacock)! I’m going to have a  direct continuation of my previous post!!
I feel like Mike and Ness get really close after the events of the movie. Like many people already HC, I think Ness is really invested in the mystery of Freddy’s. So when Mike suddenly quits and is literally ripped to shreds with Vanessa fucked up in the hospital, his theory senses are tingling. He doesn’t try to push Mike or Abby, even though it’s killing him to not know what is going on. While Mike is desperate to find a new job, he’s pretty much out of babysitters for Abby at this point. With Max dead, his Aunt out of commission, and Vanessa in the hospital, Ness graciously stands in for the others and ends up keeping Abby with him at the diner while Mike is job-hopping.
Also, given the attack on their Aunt, they can’t stay in their house for a few weeks. Ness offers his tiny apartment to share, which prompts Ness and Mike to share a room, and well, after one night Mike and Ness both insist on sleeping on the floor, a bed as well. It’s super cute and domestic and it makes Mike yearn for a life like this. But, he’s still not quite ready to make a move on Ness; mostly because he’s still a little freshly traumatized by the events that just happened, but also because homeboy’s self-esteem is non-existent. Ness is still head over heels for Mike, but is trying to tone it down for the time being so he doesn’t freak Mike out. However, after about two weeks, when Abby crawls into bed with them both after a nightmare, Mike finally breaks down and tells Ness about what happened at Freddy’s.  He’s surprised when Ness just believes him.
Once the bunny (ha) is out of the hat, Mike’s walls crumble a little bit more. Ness decides that this is the best time, and decides to plan a really cute night for the three of them. He makes them dinner and makes sure he has Abby and Mike’s favorite movies. It all goes fairly smoothly, Abby does end up eating most of her dinner, but Mike falls asleep part way through the first movie, and Ness ends up putting Abby to bed. When he’s in the hallway on his way back to Mike, he finds Mike there looking at him with a soft smile and he just leans in and kisses him.
After that, they don’t really talk about it, but they’re just together from there. They’re not super out when they’re in public (mostly because it’s 2000, and we’re assuming this takes place in a mid-western state), but Abby understands that they’re together now. Nothing huge really changes between Mike and Ness, for the most part things stay the same. Ness still helps with Abby, they still have their lil movie/TV-watching sessions after Abby goes to bed. Where they used to awkwardly stay on opposite ends of the couch, they are cuddling now. (I agree with whoever said Mike is the little spoon because YES) It’s little kisses in the morning, holding hands when they’re able to get Abby from school together in the afternoons.
Eventually, though Abby and Mike do move back into their house, this is mostly because, with Mike’s custody and house checks, they need to have more space in order to not tip off CPS that they’re gay. (Again, just basing this off the time period and the area we’re presuming this in, I could see the state using that against Mike) Ness still spends most nights at the house, and he has a toothbrush and drawer in Mike’s room.
This is all I have for now!! Also, I’m not sure if I want their Aunt to be dead or just, have been attacked by Golden Freddy. I feel like it could have gone either way in the movie, and I think that it would probably make more sense for her to just be dead. I’m going to try and write more general HCs for these two tomorrow! Again, if someone wants to write this out as an actual fic, please feel free to do so! Just be sure to tag me so I can make sure I can read your work!

Inspo: Rex Orange County - Pluto Projector
Pairing: Maddy Perez x Son!reader
Summary: You would carry the weight
Tumblr media
Warnings: character’s aged up, brief talk of abuse, and just fluffy and angsty throughout.
Words: 1623
DNI IF YOU’RE SENSITIVES TO THE WARNINGS ABOVE!
Maddy found out she was pregnant at probably the worst time in her life. The school was starting and she was dealing with Cassie dating Nate. Overall, it had been a stressful time for her to even have a baby on her mind. But she knew abortion wasn’t an option as having a kid had been a dream of hers since she could fully understand the concept.
Raising her own son or daughter. Able to teach them all that she knows. Help them through difficult times. See them rise to success and fall just for her to pick them up and support them. Be able to have grandkids. And see what her child has made of themselves and be incredibly proud.
That was all she had ever wanted. She never received that fully from her parents and she just wanted the best life she could provide for her child. So, it only made sense that she was able to follow through on those dreams.
Kids around town and parents alike did scrutinize her silently for her decision. Being labelled as the pregnant teenager, who had fucked someone who didn’t decide to pull out. It was a lot to handle. Even her parents weren’t sure it had been the best idea for her at the time in her life. She was still young and still had so much life to experience.
But her response was always so simple and full of love.
“Then I get to experience it with my baby.”
When you were conceived, Maddy knew the moment she held you in her arms, you were a gift that she never deserved. Not in a million had she ever seen such a beautiful baby boy with the brightest eyes and goofiest smile. You were her angel. Her gift. Her reason to live and to fight for what she held close.
There hadn’t been much in Maddy’s life that she saw as a core memory. It was debatable that her years as a kid were her best, but none of them came close to when you looked up at her for the first time inside that hospital room. It seemed like for around a minute, you were old enough to know who she was and understand what was happening around you. Because all she was love within your brown eyes that had begun to tear up.
You hadn’t cried. You hadn’t done anything but stare up at her.
It had been the most extraordinary thing that Maddy had ever seen. She knew that every parent felt like their kid was special and greater than any other she had seen. But it felt like you had proven that you were something else. Because as she stared back down at you with a smile, tears rolling down her cheeks. Your tiny little hands grabbed ahold of her gown and pulled your head into her chest.
That had not only been the greatest moment of her life. But a moment that she would never forget and would tell you about when you were older and could fully realize how special you were.
The moment that she took you home, all her friends visited to see you. Smiling and talking in their amusing baby voices as you laughed and smiled. One thing she knew was that you were completely different from her and your father. A joyful, smart, and extraordinary baby boy.
And you seemed to like the idea of meeting new people that would become family figures for you. Rue is your cool aunt that would let you get away with a lot of your shenanigans and often participate. Jules is the overbearing loveable aunt. Lexi is the aunt that helped you with school and someone you could watch movies with for hours on end. Kat would help you find your fashion sense. Fez would plainly be the cool uncle. And Elliot would be the uncle to get you into music. It was a good variety that Maddy knew you deserved. Far better than whatever Nate could ever give you.
That family that she wanted for you grew with your age and your understanding of life growing. Maddy got through school and got a scholarship at NYU where most of your aunts and uncles were heading for their own dreams. You had everything Maddy wanted to give you. There was nothing else that she wanted except to see you happy with your life.
But there was one part of her that felt shoved away. A side of her past that you had no idea of and would likely be enraged from. That was your father, Nate. Maddy never wanted you to know the things your Nate had done to her and probably countless other girls throughout the years you grew up and the two of them went their separate ways. Hell, she never wanted you to know who he was or to ever see him. It just felt like a disservice to you as she kept it from you and you were nothing like him. You were so different from the both of them that it made her afraid you would see yourself differently after you found out.
The front door to the apartment opening and slamming shut alerted Maddy from her spot on the living room couch. Her head snapped in the direction to see you place your skateboard near the front door and adjust the strap of your backpack around your shoulder. But instead of your beaming smile that she was so accustomed to, she found your hood up with a solum look on your face.
“Hey, honey-” You walked straight up to the coffee table and took the remote and shut off the TV. Ruining her position that she was at with House of the Dragons. But even before she could say a word, you were already speaking.
“What did he do to you?”
It was a rather abrupt question but Maddy had known what you were referring to in an instant. He. No name was needed to know what asshole you spoke of. The man you had never seen except through pictures of him online. Living a lavish life with Aunt Lex’s sister whom you hadn’t ever met either.
But although Maddy knew who you spoke of, she wasn’t even sure she was ever going to be ready for the talk. She never wanted to shine a bad light on Nate even though he deserved it. What she had wanted was for you to have a hopeful outlook on the man. Maybe he would reach out to see you one of these times. Maddy wouldn’t be against it as you deserved to have a father figure in your life. Even then, Fez and Elliot were doing an excellent job as it is.
Maddy’s mouth sat agape, unsure of how to answer. That only made you drop your backpack at the end of the couch and crouch down in front of your mother. Taking her hands in yours as you bowed your head. Sniffling as you shook your head. “What did he do to you, mom?”
Hearing your broken voice made it even harder for Maddy to speak. The back of her throat closed as she inhaled deeply with a set of her own tears beginning to brim in her eyes. “He hurt me, Y/n. He was abusive to me and many others.”
And hearing for the first time, it finally broke you. He hurt her. Your own father laid hands on your mother. There were many questions running through your head that you were sure you would never get the answers to. Albeit, you wouldn’t listen to Nate if he gave answers because you would likely be taking your skateboard to his head, but you just wanted to understand why. Why her?
It felt like Maddy was transported back to that hospital bed as you looked up at her. Tears in your eyes with nothing but love within them. Genuine unconditional love for the woman who had given you everything she could just to make you happy. She felt Deja Vu. Like you had known since you were born the type of war she had been through. It broke her.
“Baby-” Before Maddy could get a further explanation out, you had devoured her into one of your hugs. Ones that held nothing but care and warmth. Every little feeling she had been putting off- Dread, shame, and maybe even a bit of sorrow was washed away.
One of your hands held the back of her head as she cried in your chest. “You’ve been my anchor since I was born mom. You’ve carried weight across oceans that I would never even begin to fathom. You’ve walked through fires to get here,” you whispered softly. “Let me take that weight from you, please.”
It was a plea. A chance to repay the woman that had been your guardian angel. Your light at the end of every tunnel. Your entire reason to smile every morning you got up after doing karaoke with the rest of the family. You were the one taking care of her now. Opening up the book she had put a lock to until now. Allowing her to write the final page and place it back on the farthest shelf within her mind where it would be forgotten.
“I can’t do that to you, baby.” Maddy shook her head, parting from your hug. “You’re still so young. I can’t do that-”
“Mom.” That damn weightless laugh made the woman softly gasp and look up at you. Your eyes were as bright as the day she first held you and your adorably goofy smile filled her eyes. “I’m old enough to understand.”
