Hey, hi.
Sooo, I've been rewatching Riptide as you do right? And so I finally got to the episode in which Chip makes his deal with Niklaus and after refreshing my memory on that I do believe that we are entering the point in which Chip has to fullfill his end of the bargain and I'm so fucking worried actually. So first things first let's look at what Mr. Hendrix actually requested from Chip.
So in exchange for returning lost years back to Ollie Chip Has to:
-First: Make the right decision in the hole in the sea.
Arlin is supposedly still trapped below and in great pain. Niklaus for some reason NEEDS Arlin to be kept alive and he wants Chip to keep him alive no matter the consequences which worries me so fucking much. Cause first I was just worried that they are gonna go to the Black sea and find out that there is no way to save Arlin, that he'll die and this will break Chip beyond repair, but now what I'm dreading is that Arlin can't be saved in a way that matters. That Chip will have to make a decision between killing Arlin to let him rest or keep him alive and let him suffer, or even doom the whole world for the sake of preserving his painful existance and that...shit guys, just saying, we're in Black Sea now so brace your fucking selves, we're gonna C R Y. AND THE THING IS if Arlin dies SO DOES CHIP, so he really fucking Has to survive. Cause Chip promised Nik that Arlin survives so even mercy killing Arlin will be breaking a deal and Chip will turn into goop and that's just so damn bad jejdjdjsi
- Second: Supposedly there is an Orb at the hole and he can't touch it. I don't like the way he said it. Nik said sth like "not YOU at least". So what worries me is that he wants someone else to touch it and sth nad will happen because of it, but who then? Gill? Jay? I mean if they find a room with a suspicious object we can kinda count on Gill to touch it immediately, so I'm hoping that Chip doesn't get the chance to interact with it, even if he doesn't remember that he wasn't supposed to. Or maybe sth would happen if Chip touched it? Sth that Nik doesn't want to happen? Either way Chip can't do that now cause if he does he breaks the deal and fucking dies probably, so well shit.
- Third: When the time comes and Nik requests his favor from Gillion, Chip can't interfere. Whatever Nik will have Gill do, Chip can't stop it. He cannot and that of all things I fear will be the hardest thing to do. See, Nik never expected Chip to even come to him. But he was clearly glad that he can use him to shift things in his favor. I feel like whatever dark force turned Sakura into the Black Sea is connected to Alrin's life force and Nik wants the Black Sea to stay. It is messing with the world and unleashing twisted magic into it and I feel like he needs it to stay that way until Gill's time to fulfill his prophecy comes. And whatever Nik wants Gill to do Has a potential to be catastrophic.
Black Sea is definitely not the last chapter, but it's gonna be full of anguish and sorrow. Buckle the fuck up lads, we're in for a ride

You do so right by z Broly, you understand his potential. Your au with him and Trunks is a delight
Glad we all appreciate my blatant misrepresentation of the character 😌 im partly joking but man fr, 12 year old me would hate that instead of him bein a badass edgy monster, I draw him as.. *checks notes* .. an immature loser with bad coping mechanisms uwu
Ok but in true ask tradition! :U im hijacking this ask to talk about a dumb theory thats been rolling around in my head for like 2 years now: android 16 and broly similarities:
Ok so. If you aren't aware. The android arc of dragon ball was originally going to focus on the androids 19 & 20 and trunks even names them specifically
Tumblr media
But Toriyamas former editor, Kazuhiko Torishima, didn't like them as the main antagonists and so Toriyama changed it to focus on 17 & 18 as the bad guys and introduced 16 as a sort of mystery
Tumblr media
Now. This gets almost completely dropped once that same former editor ALSO doesn't like these androids and cell becomes the main villian for the arc (yeah yeah, the bomb thing is technically *there*, but its so inconsequential most people forget its even a thing :T )
So. Idk exactly when movie 8 went into production, but we know Brolys LSSJ form was inspired by trunks SSJ grade3 form that appears several chapters after cell has been introduced and the androids have become power-up fodder, so im gonna argue its safe to say the decision to move away from their story had been made
(side tangent that I find absolutely hilarious btw- despite gokus commentary in the HTC, SSJ grade 3 was the strongest form of ssj we saw at this point, so its pretty appropriate to use it as the basis of the strongest scariest ssj form.... rrriiiiiiiiggght up until toriyama introduced SSJ2 on Feb 2, 1993- near exactly 1 month before the first Broly movie hit theaters. Completely undermined what, up til then, looked like a trend in stronger form = bigger and beefier right as the big beefy strongest guy ever movie came out 🤣 absolutely love it!)
So anyways. The movies overall also tend to have varying degrees of similarities with recent arcs in the show and Toriyama, while not overly involved, would give the studio designs and story notes. And. Idk. Yall can tell me im reaching if ya want, but: A guy who's made into a weapon by his father who's on a quest for revenge and has this conflicting view of his son as both someone he feels he failed to protect, someone he cares about, but also as a tool for that revenge, and someone who's destructive power hes become deeply afraid of.. now where have we seen somethin like that 🤔 may be an extra reach but I also think its neat that despite their different face shape, Toriyamas gave em the same expression
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lol they're also both just ridiculously tall bastards. Like for no gd reason. And yeah, to me atleast, it explains why hating goku specifically gets shoehorned into brolys backstory (listen I can absolutely do the mental gymnastics to make it make sense! I'm fine with it! Its fine! I actually like it! ... but it IS a dumb shoehorned plot point! Both things can be true D:< ) look just lookit these tall ass shits
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway. My last note is just this statement from Toriyama about 16 and Gero. The way gero is presented is really in line with how I see Paragus as this tragic failure of a father- honestly caring about his kid, but letting grief and revenge drive him into conflicting corners where he wants revenge FOR the life denied his son, but also actively shaping his son into such a terrifying weapon that ultimately hed rather his kid just never be conscious cause thats the 'only way to keep them safe'
Tumblr media
“Dr. Gero’s son who died young a long time ago served as the visual model for Android 16. He was a high-ranking soldier for the Red Ribbon Army but was shot down by the enemy. Dr. Gero reserved special feelings for 16 as “his son,” and although he equipped 16 with immense power and a frightening destructive device, he didn’t want to see him be defeated on the battlefield and thus programmed him to have a gentle personality. 16 was consequently considered a failed creation.” The smaller caption below Toriyama’s quote reads: “Was the reason Dr. Gero didn’t want to activate 16 perhaps because of his parental love to not see him destroyed?”

Fighting the urge to make another post about Bryce Lawerence 😔…
Another post about Bryce Lawerence!
(Guys I gave into the urge)
Okay- but like. No one cares about him, it’s like if I went on an entire post for Larry the legionnaire (that one is still on my list to make- **Update from future Kleos who’s finishing this right now, Larry the Legionnaire post is going to be started directly after this is posted!***). But I really like talking about him because he literally stole a part of my brain and refuses to hand it over.
And there’s so much to him that we don’t know that can be explored! Like- there are so many possibilities with his character and I want to include him more in my Re-imagining because if we’re gonna make him a monster then why not actually display his absolute bat shittery in the book. Or I don’t know.. make him an actually compelling character that gets to be an actual character and not a maniacal stereotype that is put in the plot so we can show Nico’s.. thing? (I don’t know, I’ll be honest don’t like Nico that much- like him in the first arc when he’s a silly little baby and then an emo 10 year old)
Like we know he cannonically committed a bunch of crimes, barely got away by the skin of his teeth because of nepotism and then like??? We don’t know how old he was when he committed said crimes, his most notable one oh I don’t know, MURDER, that feels notable is left as just an afterthought like- there were so many ways this could’ve affected everything just from how long ago the murder was! (I think I did a whole other post on Bryce just talking about that! But it could seriously affect camp and I feel like there was major potential that could’ve improved the story)
Bryce could’ve been a convincing demigod villain that would be an actual threat and the scariest part would be that he wouldn’t have been working for Gaea (at the very most he might’ve done like mercenary work for stuff like triumvirate holdings or whatever it’s called but because I haven’t finished TOA I refuse to make any conclusions) he’d be a separate much more real entity and threat (because how many people were really tensed up and nervous over the Camp Jupiter-Camp Half-blood conflict. Because we don’t see any of it and if the story was tweaked and all of protags weren’t shoved in the same boat away from the b-plot it would be better but that’s for me to yap about-)
And; may I propose a concept (that fits with my hcs-) that Bryce would’ve been in the first cohort, he canonically murdered his Centurion in the war games (It’s not plural in the books to I have to assume that it’s just one of them) but this is my idea that he killed the Centurion that Micheal too over for, and that either Bryce killed them to clear the way for Michael (which opens a whole new avenue for a Michael and Bryce and what their relationship would’ve been that would lead for Bryce to do that-) or that Bryce wanted to take up the role but didn’t get it.
Of course there’s the scenario that Bryce did it for fun. Which is what Rick implied though I don’t like that because it feels… icky? Most people (even people who do heinous crimes like this) don’t just murder for no reason. There is more often than not, a motive. And I think giving Bryce a motive would make him a lot more interesting than just saying, “oh he’s wild guys, he’s just a quirky little guy” and moving on. Again; let’s not make the character with some form of implied psychopathy just a harmful stereotype of an already incredibly stigmatized condition. Alright, cool.
But if we just got a little forethought and Bryce was a bigger part in the plot (which could be my biased perspective because I like the little man) then it could’ve been so much more interesting in camp! It would set up a post Bryce-debocle Camp Jupiter when we first see in in SoN. Where Reyna’s struggling to keep camp together and has to deal with the lingering outside threats of the dude that would probably have a vendetta because she exiled him from the life he’s ever known that could quite possibly still be close to camp (remember Camp Jupiter doesn’t have the magic border-) and developing a following (Make Reyna paranoid, make her fall- make her be a prime example of the perfect soldier, then make her crumble, see as she begins to spiral and fear that she is becoming every closer to her own fathers paranoia, allow her that and put in the message that it gets better and that you can get help. But that’s another post-) a First cohort that is still trying to adjust to the power exchange of a new Centurion, a camp that is on guard and is mourning the loss of a valued and dear member of their legion (I’m not saying we make a Redtail out of the unnamed murdered centurion- but I am saying make a Redtail, and if you get the reference, rad) a camp that is unwelcoming more so than usual all because of this one person. A legacy no less- give us a proper opportunity to dive into Legacies and the culture surrounding them!
Also would like to state that in my legacies post I briefly fluttered by the mention that I think his father was a demigod and that made him a first gen legacy, but on his mothers side I’d like to give the consideration that she’d come from a long line of legacies of Ira (or Furor- or Lyssa as she was in her Green counterpart) but Ira was the spirit (not a goddess, felt that should be known though I’m unsure if that matters or if she can really be interchangeable and still regarded as a minor goddess-) of mad rage, frenzy, and rabies in animals. I say to add this aspect because it feels right in my brain. Sure demigods shouldn’t be stereotyped into personalities based on who they’re related to directly in divinity. But- like, I just wanna have this. I don’t get to talk about Lyssa a lot and I find her interesting and it’s my head-canon (no idea why I’m arguing with myself because literally none of you guys care.)
Okay! I’ve been writing this and recently finished reading zazzanders‘s (please I don’t know if I should be using a direct mention- link thingy? If I should let me know because I’d rather have my posts… somewhat easier to read, like obviously the writing style invokes someone hunched over their phone just typing out random sentences for the fun of it because that’s what it is but I want there to be some form of ease. But you should go check out their page because they make really cool and interesting content) reblog of one of my posts and I too just realized how insanely powerful Bryce is? I don’t know how I would like nerf him but I feel he significantly needs to be chilled out because he has a lot of stuff going on. Like a lot of powers and stuff and whatever and it’s all weird and Rick just yelled whatever when writing him and anything to do with Camp Jupiter so it all ends up weird as hell. Until I figure all that out I’m not touching it and I’m leaving Bryce in this weird zone- and I can’t say screw it and make him blessed by Orcus because with his title alone I think there is no way he would condone or agree with anything Bryce has done,
Which launches me into sudden change! I want to know what Bryce and Orcus’s relationship is. We know Bryce is said to have gone and survived a trip to the underworld because of his edgy 12-year-old comment about the screams from the field of punishment sounding like music to his ears (seriously the more I write the more like I feel like he’d be one of Ramona Flowers’s evil ex boyfriends) so it can be implied that at one point he tried to make contact with Orcus. How did that go out? Not well because I expect Bryce broke a shit ton of oaths about like being a good legionnaire and he probably lied on stand during trial because he’s totally the type of beetle that would do that, so I want to know what that was like- how that affected Bryce, all that stuff. And I know I’ll probably write out how I think that scenario played out in the future.
Anyway I’m pretty sure that I’m just grasping at straws and really if I wanted to I could just keep talking about this character because I don’t know why but I just like- woke up one day and couldn’t get him off my mind sooo..
Larry the legionnaire post next! Then after that I don’t know, maybe something about New Rome or Camp Jupiter. Maybe I’ll finally get around to being confused about the jobs in camp or something,
Maybe goodnight? I don’t really know because the Larry post feels like it’ll be short.

If were any of Saitama's friends see what Saitama has done in the OG timeline, how would they react?
Tbh I'm pretty sure they'd be immensely horrified by what Saitama has done. While it was necessary for Garou to be defeated, not a single one of Saitama's actions in that fight was heroic. It's a more monstrous side of Saitama no one has seen before — tbh the scariest thing abt Saitama during 166 isn't the fact he was gonna blow up the earth as collateral and didn't care, it's the fact on how quick he snapped. There wasn't a gradual descent, just a quick switch. I honestly think if the core was destroyed, Saitama would've destroyed everything in turn
But honestly, I just feel bad for Genos. This kid is just trying to stumble his way through his life, but while he may think he knows what he is in for, he really isn't. Being the morality chain/living emotional crutch for a destructive god is unfair for Genos (too much pressure for anyone in that shoes), even if it was unintentional on Saitama's part. A conversation between Saitama and Genos, even if it won't happen in this arc, is absolutely necessary. Genos should know what he's signing up for, bc else this would def get him unfairly killed.
Tbh regardless whether or not Genos abandons him, I think it would still be in Saitama's conscience that Genos gets to make a decision for himself on whether or not to stay by Saitama's side — Saitama seems to be the the type of person who wouldn't care if Genos would hate him for the rest of his life, what matters is that he's alive
*record scratch* Whoa, hold up. This is a lot, concerning the hypothetical whether his friends ever become scared/wary of his strength is one thing, but "whether or not Genos abandons him"? We're talking -the- same Genos here who, since the Sea King arc, had already vowed to be there for Saitama in the event the entire public turned against him?? Who couldn't contain his joy/excitement by bodily crashing into him, who's always had unwavering faith in him? It would feel like hell would have to freeze over before Genos' level of faith earned for him - not just as a hero, but as a person, is ever broken/betrayed. That even if he saw Saitama doing morally questionable things, it'd be unlike Genos to just drop everything or turn on him just like that without questioning/inquiring for more info, or unless it was something huge that thoroughly shook his foundations to his core, or if Saitama ever broke his heart (whoa, figurative here, not his literal core.)
Anyway, this reminds me of what I wrote back in 2017 about his post-arc webcomic decision to stay with Saitama after everything (yes, his choice). And....the manga has certainly changed a lot of context since then, that....it's honestly probably on Saitama whether he comes clean to Genos about certain things, or tries to keep his distance out of concern for Genos' own safety, or continues to leave Genos in the dark due to Saitama's own insecurities not wanting to disrupt things between them or bring up the awkward elephant in the room he doesn't know how to properly talk to him about. (And of course, if Saitama forgets much of it, too. geh.) In any case, Saitama is bound to respect Genos wishes to come and go as he pleases, despite how....dependent Saitama won't admit he’s grown on him for his emotional needs/stability in life. He's the type who’d rather suffer in silence harm/revert himself back into his old alienating habits rather than try to impose his wants on others. :')
But if anything, Genos learning how much he actually means to Saitama, that he was indirectly the key to Saitama's surge in strength/growth (emotion), would be....!!!! :OOO (Considering how much Genos had always wanted to learn the secret insight about that for so long! To learn it was indirectly him this time would be mind blowing.) That I doubt either of them could have ever fathomed that he'd essentially become 'the morality chain/living emotional crutch for a destructive god' D: Not an easy subject to broach at all, heh. But whatever happens, I certainly hope we get SOME talk/communication between them before further misunderstandings potentially happen.

fear purpled bedwars: a dream smp character analysis
(spoilers from Antfrost’s stream, 01/31/2021-02/1/2021)
I’ve been waiting for this guy to finally get lore, and I feel very well fed. It’s lore I expected from Purpled’s character so so bad I’ve been hearing people fearing for Purpled’s safety, but I’m of the opinion that Purpled is more of a potential threat than a potential victim Let’s go through what we know of the character
Purpled first established himself as a fairly independent and neutral force who makes sure he has the agency to do literally whatever the hell he wants. He puts his own needs first before the needs of other people. If you look at it, besides Dream, he’s one of the few members of the server with very little attachment to people, to other characters. The only person he trusts well enough is Ponk, a character chaotic and gray enough to do scams with Purpled, but a character that is nice and innocent enough (to an extent) as to be fairly below Purpled in regards to their relationship dynamic.
We know this is how their dynamic is, based not only on this Egg stream, but also on the stream about the Estate Conflict (as named by the Wiki)/the Dream SMP Fire Scam (as named by Purpled on his video about it).
Purpled’s one of the many people in the server who are upset for being ignored or being treated inconsiderately. (Like the rest of them, it’s usually due to not being in lore or barely logging into the server. They are motivated to get the server’s attention.) While Jack Manifold and Nihachu started their respective villain arcs, Purpled’s way of coping with this is starting a real estate business. He chose Ponk as his partner, and throughout their attempts to start the business, Ponk has functioned as a yes man to Purpled. Their relationship is based on business, not an established friendship. These two could easily scam each other but saw instead more potential in a partnership.
Knowing Purpled, what fuels him to keep the business going is his desire for money and rewards. Coupled with his property getting tampered with all the time, it’s not hard to see why he’d become so materialistic to the point of scamming people.
Keep in mind that he’s not just willing to settle with battles, but has the experience to win settlements via battles. Purpled is equipped as a player. Asserting his power this way makes him a threat to other members of the server.
Something that Purpled said to Ponk concerning the Real Estate Business is:
Purpled: Ponk, listen. We have to have good business with these people...and if we make a good deal? If we make a good deal, think about what this means for us. Antfrost is just the beginning, right? Listen, think about how many unpaid houses are there on the server. Think about the land. Think about the land on this server. Think about the Prime path. Think about all... Ponk:...the real estate?
Like, this child’s ambition is absolutely terrifying. It reminds me of whenever Quackity gets serious about something.
If Purpled genuinely wanted to, and like, had the energy for it, he could claim the entire server by profitting off of the land, exploiting anyone with property over it.
This real estate thing was established within December. The blood vine growths were already present.
We know that the Crimson wants to take over the server, covering the lands in red, right? Y’all seeing this? Ponk saw it. He saw opportunity, and to think he saw it while trying to get out of a sticky situation he had made for himself concerning the Eggpire!
In the Skull Cave, Ponk and Purpled take themselves aside. Purpled is wisely distrusting of Bad, Ant, and Punz. Ponk insisted that the real estate business, or least Purpled himself personally, can mutually benefit with the Eggpire should they work together. Ponk used his experiences with the 3, particularly how accomodating they were of him when he was trapped in the Egg Box-thing, as a reason to convince Purpled the Eggpire was worth their time.
Ponk: This payday right here will set us for life! Real estate to the moon, okay? To the moon! Purpled: Okay? Ponk: Trust me, trust me.
Purpled clearly likes the power he got from the Eggpire of all people, as the deal to kill Captain Puffy went well.
Ponk: Ask for more money! Purpled: Ponk, from what I can tell, they...they can grant me, really, anything that I want. BadBoyHalo: Anything! Purpled: They seem to have a lot of financial backing here. BadBoyHalo: We do. Antfrost: We do, we do! Purpled: Assuming you trust them Ponk, I trust them. And anything I ask for can be mine.
Keep in mind that at this time, Ponk being infected by the Crimson is still in question. (Hell, that’s why he got trapped by the Eggpire again] He has spent significant amounts of time with the Egg, and his eyes may or may have become red (he totally isn’t wearing red contacts, at least according to him). The way the Crimson beckons to people varies but it’s clear to us that it uses attachments and deep desires as its hook. Ponk, based on his period of exposure, whether immune or not, should have deduced this. He knows he made Purpled and himself a powerful ally. The Eggpire knows it’s made a potentially powerful ally in Purpled.
However, I feel that Purpled might become a thorn for the Crimson should it come to it. There’s a reason he trusts Ponk, and there’s a reason as to why Ponk’s level of Crimson influence is difficult to determine.
It’s easy to conclude that Purpled and the Crimson have a common goal: take over and claim the entire server.
Purpled’s future can go against the Crimson and function as a competitive force. I’m not keen on this as it seems that Quackity is fulfilling this role. Would Purpled team with Quackity? I doubt it, as Purpled has nothing to go with on trusting him + Quackity is allied with Sam on Las Vegas. Sam destroyed Ponk’s lemon tree AND the Real Estate building Purpled owns. If anything, Purpled has many reasons to go against Quackity, who is associated with a person that has offended him and Ponk personally.
Now, if Purpled joined the Crimson, I theorize that this would be out of genuine willingness, and not being forced into its influence. Today he saw the Eggpire as useful--not trustworthy! Useful.
Purpled: Ponk, you can return anytime. As for these three, I do not extend the same offer.
Purpled is confident that he can one up the Eggpire/Crimson with his own ambition, and personally, I see that too. If Purpled joins this group and allows himself to become infected, I don’t think I would see that strong a change in character motivation. I see Purpled proclaiming that he and the Egg share the same interests. If the Crimson acknowledges this desire of his properly, the Eggpire’s power dynamic is subject to change. Think about it.
Bad’s the main mouthpiece due to the fact that he’s the de-facto head of the Badlands. His motivations don’t quite line up with the Crimson though. He’s tragically serving the Egg for Skeppy’s safety. The Crimson knows this.
The Crimson would be more content to speak through someone who shares its exact goals! Purpled wants the server and so does the Crimson. It may force the group to acknowledge this 17 year old boy as the head and voice of the Eggpire once this is recognized to all of them, as beckoned by the Crimson Egg. The scariest thing is that Purpled doesn’t need to corrupt himself much. The scariest thing is that Purpled is smart and a capable salesman. Purpled has what BadBoyHalo does not: what exactly the Eggpire needs in order to assert itself as a convincing yet threatening force.
I mean, he’s already willing to do malicious things for profit, what more with a supernatural force that will only goad this ambition on?

THE DIFFERENT FORMS OF HUACHENG; TGCF SEASON 1
Tumblr media
TGCF just ended, and I just wanted to cry because I'm going to miss this show for a while until we're ready for season 2. Good news Season 2 has been announced and is in production so maybe end of this year? Hopefully? One can hope. Anyways because we're saying goodbye for a while, I decided to focus my review on Hua  Cheng this time. The many ways he has shown up in Season 1, the many encounters he had with Xie Lian who doesn't even know how long he's been by his side, the many forms he used to stay and help Xie Lian. In TGCF, Hua Cheng's appearances in Xie Lian’s life is essential because of his constant devotion and ambition to ensure that Xie Lian is protected, safe and happy. Hua Cheng shows up each time to an oblivious Xie Lian who only has been introduced to the knowledge of one form of him, San Lang in season 1. But what about us the audience, we've seen Cheng as a child in the first episode, in the intro, we've seen him as San Lang, and we've also been introduced slightly to his natural form, the Hua Cheng Ghost King form. So let's look into it more, how has each state been connected to Xie Lian and what have we been shown or told so far about the building relationship between our ghost king and our god.
Tumblr media
The Different Versions of Hua Cheng
Tumblr media
So the first thing we need to break down is the similarities of each of his forms and their different meanings to his character dynamic and arc concerning his and Xie Lian's love story. So as mentioned before there are three different versions of him we're introduced to:
The Child: We see him in a desolated state, with bandages surrounding his face, blood and he's in tears looking forlorn at Xie Lian who also has given up on something throwing away his umbrella and face darkened and walking away, probably to a small shack. We also see this child more importantly connected to our story because he's the first version of Hua Cheng in our origin of these two's meeting. He's saved by Xie Lian who completely stuns him and gives him the meaning to life again. We see snippets of this version of him in flashbacks and in the opening intro because TGCF is a story that is planning to unveil the years of Hua Cheng's devotion to  Xie Lian, the reasons, the actions made, and the consequences created from it in the past.
San Lang: Number two we get to see San Lang, he's the version we spend the most time within season 1, knowing and having suspicions that he's Hua Cheng. San Lang is a mortal and meant to be a teen; he's wise for his age, aloof, and sly. And he's made it an aim to accompany  Xie Lian on his journey to getting followers again. There's more to San Lang that meets the eye, he has a convoluted back story (which is backshadowing the truth of his past) he tells Xie Lian, and he's very loyal and protective of Xie Lian. Xie Lian gets to become close to this version of Hua Cheng; this is the version he trusts the most and is the person who becomes someone he cares a lot about unconditionally.
Crimson Rain Sought Flower/ Ghost King the most dangerous and scariest and wealthy demon/devastation ghost in the story.  Xie Lian is first warned away from him because the gods are not on good terms with him. But  Xie Lian can't help but wonder if he's more than meets the eye because they meet under a blood rain as bride and groom. Hua Cheng shows up in his real form to guide  Xie Lian to safety. This version shows up again in the Sinner's pit in the Banyue arc in episode 9. After San Lang jumps in a sacrificial move, Hua Cheng eliminates everybody ruthlessly in the Sinner's pit and shows up again to fight Pei Xu to protect  Xie Lian in episode 11. This version is the real Hua Cheng, he has one eye, he is cold, ruthless, but also he's made it clear he wants to protect and is on the lookout for Xie Lian. By the end of season 1, Lian chooses to ignore the rumours and become close with him despite the warnings.
Tumblr media
Age, Status, and Love; The growth of Hua Cheng
The first thing to notice about these versions of Hua Cheng is that they all have a way of shadowing how he's grown and his journey to Xie Lian. From a child who's naive and innocent and is traumatised by events in the world, to a teen who is not taken as seriously, is wiser and mature and able to fend for himself, to the Ghost King who is who he is at present, his real self after many years, who is now powerful, in control and older but also not alive.
And the second thing to notice is the difference of status and wealth depicted with his versions;  as a child even though we aren't shown the details, we can see that he's not rich, he's dressed in rags, and he's bandaged poorly and looks like he has nothing. As San Lang, he's able to fend for himself and Xie Lian by collecting scraps and rebuilding their first place together, and with Ghost King, you can tell he's wealthy, he's dressed in the finest of robes, silver dangling from everywhere you look, and we know from Ling Wen; he's affluent. So another observation to notice.
Tumblr media
The last thing to notice with these versions is the one common motif, Xie Lian. Xie Lian is also seen in different versions/ forms to us each time Hua Cheng shows up.
We see  Xie Lian in the child's eyes as a prince; golden, lavish and beautiful, he's dressed in the finest attire but also we see that Lian is the person who flies to save this child from either falling or jumping to his end. (still, we can't be sure why he was falling),
But then with San Lang, Xie Lian is undercover as a mortal (though it's pretty apparent to guess he's not) without power, followers or any self-esteem (from his comments) and wealth. But with San Lang, Xie Lian is vulnerable and shown to be more lonely and filled with self-deprecation but is determined to protect everyone he comes across, which makes him more self-sacrificial.
As Ghost King, we see Xie Lian on a mission as a god, untrusting, capable, and very cunning and intuitive, he wears a mask (literally wearing a veil) of happiness, ease,  but he's alert and ready to defend and knows how to avoid being caught by his enemies.
Tumblr media
Unconditional Devotion; The Love of Hua Cheng
In all versions, Hua Cheng shows us that he has with Xie Lian some kind of devotion and love:
As a child: His eyes light up for the first time, he follows after him (inferred from the intro and episode 1) and watches helplessly as he can't do anything to protect him at that moment. You can feel the determination, the longing, and the urgency in each scene he's shown watching after  Xie Lian as Xie Lian gives up on himself.
As San Lang: He guides and protects Xie Lian, he stays by his side loyally and prevents Xie Lian from getting into harm's way using information that he knows. You can feel that he knows how Xie Lian is self-sacrificial, and he's here to protect and keep Xie Lian from being puppeteered or played around by others.
As Ghost King: He is deadly when it comes to Xie Lian, he kills and destroys and doesn't waste time with others, he's also protective of where Xie Lian touches, he doesn't want him soiled by blood or anything ( using either an umbrella to protect him when they first meet, or cradling him to ensure his foot doesn't meet the ground). He's determined to get rid of anything that could hurt Xie Lian or make him suffer, and he does it through violence.
Tumblr media
And even though Xie Lian doesn't have any recognition of who he is yet in his life, in every version Xie Lian has also shown protection and care for Hua Cheng unconditionally which is embedded in his personality.
He saves his life as the child, (just like he positively affects other children like Banyue who look up to him), he is determined to protect and make sure San Lang is safe. It terrifies him to think otherwise, and he accepts Hua Cheng unconditionally after realising who he is.
He also shows awe and intrigue with all things, Hua Cheng, whilst others call him terrifying  Xie Lian says his name suits him because it's pretty when he sees his butterflies he's in awe and automatically wants to follow them because they make him feel at ease despite the fact that those butterflies can probably without his knowledge kill and maim. When he notices others may notice who Cheng is at the pit, he's worried but at ease to see him hidden as San Lang again, and he finally tells him; he doesn't care who he is because he's a friend.
Tumblr media
Xie Lian; The Goal of Hua Cheng
For Xie Lian he's realised there's unconditional care and like and reliance for Hua Cheng, it's automatic and he can't stop feeling safe and at ease with him. Despite his first time meeting San Lang and being suspicious, it took him an ox ride to find out he liked and was intrigued by San Lang even if he was Hua Cheng. He liked how he spoke, he liked his wisdom, and he enjoyed spending time with him. It became natural to rely on his protection, his touch, and his information each journey they went on.
And with Hua Cheng in all his versions there's that unconditional need to protect, devotion and determination to stay by Xie Lian's side. After all, that's where this started, him being affected by Xie Lian saving his life. We can guess he took it literally and made it a reality, though now we wonder how he went from a human child to being dead yet a mighty ghost king.
In a way we see Hua Cheng show up and start making Xie Lian find reasons for living too. Not that it's apparent that he doesn't want to live; that he's full of self-loathing and self-sacrificial tendencies. Hua Cheng seemed to be as San Lang, one of the first people who showed Xie Lian unconditional loyalty and support despite not seeing himself as deserving of it. Hua Cheng may not be his reason for living, but Hua Cheng is his reason for why he gets to live; many times Hua Cheng's protection is to keep Xie Lian from being hurt; the snake scorpion venom, the Sinner's pit, the Pei Xu and snakes, the head on the ground filled with demonic energy and Xuan Ji. Hua Cheng shows up as groom the first time we see him, and he leads Xie Lian to protection to the place he needs to go to know what's going on with the brides. With his determination, experience (giving Xie Lian information) and power Hua Cheng protects and pushes Xie Lian to keep staying safe and alive knowing someone does not see him as worthless or a misfortune.
Tumblr media
Ghost vs Human: The Disguise of Hua Cheng
It makes you wonder this need of why Hua Cheng does hide in many forms; why does he not make Xie Lian know that they've known each other for so long? why does he hide as San Lang and not his true form since Xie Lian doesn't know who he is, and why does he keep his true form out of sight from Xie Lian. He's determined to hide his natural form because showing it would lead to opportunities of weakness.
As we can see from just his child self Hua Cheng was determined to do something, to become more so he could be of help, payback Xie Lian for saving his life, and become his reason to live. So he probably can not let any weakness affect him; he probably has built up protection of himself so no one can reach him so that no one can reach Xie Lian. His aim is to be a safeguard for Xie Lian, an impenetrable, protective and robust protection. People seeing his real form is a lead way to vulnerability and weakness. Him protecting how he looks makes him even more of a scarier person to deal with because you don't know his real self or strength fully.
It also gives him a way to be by  Xie Lian's side without anyone knowing his goals; he does this as San Lang, shows a different version of himself which is more acceptable and less conflicting to be by Xie Lian's side. A mortal can be seen as a worshiper, a friend and a helper. But a ghost king by a god side is more looked down upon. We see this when Fu Yao and Nan Feng try to uncover who he is. Xie Lian has been warned that he should stay away from Ghost King version, and maybe Hua Cheng also thinks that version should not be known, or seen or met. With how scary and dangerous he seems, (he's known for his harmful actions, he also took out his own eye as he puts it because of insanity, he has incredibly deadly weapons and he's someone heaven is terrified of). Hua Cheng may think Xie Lian won't give him a chance to know him. But of course, he discovers that  Xie Lian doesn't care about that.
Tumblr media
Ghost King: The Past of Hua Cheng
The different forms of Hua Cheng we see as the audience showcases other assets to his mindset, we've seen him weak, vulnerable, and lost without Xie Lian when he was a child, there was a time where he was the most scared of everything,  a time where he probably had no control over whatever he wanted, a time where he was filled with despair and obliqueness, but Xie Lian showed up as a light, the same way Hua Cheng shows up in Xie Lian's life in season 1 as a guide, they both shift their mindsets and determination to be better and succeed.
That's why his growth to becoming Ghost King is fascinating; he's become the opposite of his childhood self, he's no longer mortal and human, ( as we see with his other two versions) he's seen as ruthless and cold to anyone who bothers him or Xie Lian. It's not an easy feat; it must have taken a lot of pain, and suffering to get to who he is, for him even to become a devastation he would have needed to be filled with resentful energy, this means that he also is someone full of grief and suffering as  Xie Lian who hides his behind his mask of an easygoing and cheerful nature.
Hua Cheng hides his behind strength and power, they both have scars and secrets hidden needed to uncover to know why they have become this way, but one thing stays for sure, and that's that Xie Lian and Hua Cheng both become healing to each other from their past scars. Xie Lian becomes Hua Cheng's sole reason to live, devoting himself to Xie Lian is what's making him good and not broken. Xie Lian on the other hand, Cheng becomes someone who makes him want to accept himself, Hua Cheng is someone who becomes a healing presence to him, he's happier, comfortable and safer by his side, and he knows this. Hence, he lets himself be pulled to him, carried and protected by him, he's shocked by it, but you can see it affects him each time Hua Cheng does something to protect him as San Lang.
In a world where we are focusing on gods and demons and ghosts, Xie Lian and Hua Cheng seem oddly incompatible; the gods look down on the ghost kings because of their actions and because they're closer to evil or immoral actions. Xie Lian as a god is meant to be moral, just and higher than others, including mortals, and so being with the most powerful ghost king and slowly falling for him probably isn't a great idea. What matters now is how long these two have been near each other, how has both the journey of them affected the other, Hua Cheng is entirely devoted to Xie Lian even after his passing and resurrection as a ghost king, and that's interesting, he has been watching and keeping an eye on Xie Lian who's oblivious and has more things to focus on than that, Xie Lian has a past which he feels guilt, self-hatred and fear from, it's slowly being revealed, and it's fascinating to watch it.
Tumblr media
Hua Cheng also has many interesting actions he's made that also need a reason or explanation, like why he has one eye, what made him become a ghost king, why he aimed for an attack at the gods, and his real purpose with Xie Lian? It's been an amazing time watching this season. I can't wait to find out more about these two's journey and love story. The undying loyalty and devotion to each other despite being so far apart for time is fascinating. I can't wait to see season 2.

The Voyage So Far: Dressrosa (Part One)
east blue (1 | 2) || alabasta (1 | 2) || skypiea || water 7 || enies lobby || thriller bark || paramount war (1 | 2) || fishman island || punk hazard || dressrosa (1 | 2) || whole cake island || wano (1 | 2)
Tumblr media
fujitora’s introduction is so memorable. we don’t even know he’s an admiral until a little while after this, but the way he’s introduced makes him both immediately intriguing and tentatively likable, and also shows he’s terrifyingly powerful. similar to wano, dressrosa is a very twisty arc with a lot of hidden identities and things and people that are not what they seem, and fujitora’s introduction establishes that right off the bat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it’s no secret i really like law, and i think his relationships and dynamics with the strawhats are some of the reasons why. it’s very good. the way he usually interacts with them (read: suffering) contrasts against the very real respect and faith he develops for them, and for luffy in particular. he refuses to call luffy his subordinate, here, even though it would be basically a get-out-of-jail free card when it comes to dealing with fujitora, and it comes up again more than once later in this arc too (though never to the strawhats themselves).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
genuinely the tournament subplot is one of my favorite parts of this entire arc, especially because it happens while the action in the rest of dressrosa is mostly still setting up. it’s so fun to watch luffy go completely ham with minimal consequences, especially because we know more or less from the beginning that he’s not really likely to face a challenge from anyone here.
it allows the supporting cast to be built out as a pretty entertaining group in their own right, too, especially bartolomeo and cavendish, and sets up most of the future grand fleet without being too obvious about it.
Tumblr media
i may as well say now, because i’m sure i’ll be talking about it a lot: kyros is one of my favorite one piece parents, and his and rebecca’s relationship hits me in the fucking chest. i’m consistently upset that they got so much stolen from them, and very very glad that they got the happy ending they dearly deserved.
Tumblr media
i really like rebecca. and i like her story, too. i know there are people who want her to be more of a fighter, more violent, but i think that’s missing the point. rebecca is someone who has been victimized and commodified and put on display to die in front of a country that hates her again and again and again, and she still stays gentle and good, and i think that makes her one of the strongest characters in this arc.
obviously in isolation ‘damsel in distress’ is not really a good trope (and i’ve complained about it before with regards to tashigi in punk hazard), but i also don’t think it’s really at play here. rebecca is someone who deserves to finally lay down her sword and rest and be happy and safe, and her father deserves the chance to give her the protection he hasn’t been able to.
Tumblr media
i really like when oda does things like this with paneling, i think it’s tremendously cool. there’s some similar examples with law’s powers in this arc and punk hazard as well, and it’s cool as hell every time.
Tumblr media
this is one of my favorite panels in all of dressrosa.
kyros has a line a lot later on about ‘restoring the true dressrosa,’ and that’s what this scene makes me think of. this is the true dressrosa- the broken and forgotten and lost, down in the darkness beneath the city. and no matter what he may think of himself, riku is still their king.
this panel also reminds me of the similar scene in udon in wano, where the prisoners kneel before momonosuke. which is, incidentally, another favorite of mine. i really like whenever one piece deals in themes of loyalty, i feel like it always hits very hard.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[spoilers for recent wano chapters]
i think some parts of dressrosa line up very nicely with the recent reveal in wano that law’s new goal is uncovering the mystery of the will of d. it’s something that feels very natural and fitting for him, and i think this is one of the reasons why.
of the Ds we’ve seen, law is the only one who’s been really shown to be actively aware of the name and the weight it holds (and thus, the only one to bother to keep it secret), and he even weaponizes it against doflamingo throughout dressrosa in order to throw him off balance, and succeeds. it feels like a very natural progression from that awareness to trying to understand its mystery, at least to me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
barto is a great character because he’s introduced as being a completely unlikable shithead, and like, that’s not inaccurate, he totally is, but he also somehow winds up being likable anyways. part of that is his idolization of the strawhats (because, let’s be real, all of us can relate), but part of it is also that he’s kind of honorable in his own way, and i think him saving bellamy from dellinger despite having no stake in the situation just because they fought together is probably the best example of that.
Tumblr media
i really like how the sabo reveal is handled. all the focus is placed on luffy and his reaction, and then we get our actual introduction to sabo as an adult slowly over the course of the next few chapters in how he acts and interacts with other characters throughout the tournament, culminating in his proper introduction after it’s over.
the actual explanation of what happened to him, how he survived and the entirety of his reunion with luffy is saved for the end of the arc, and i think it’s good that it happens there, in a quiet time after the dust is settled, rather than being smacked in the middle of the rising action.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
of all the many many devil fruits that have appeared in one piece, i think sugar’s is the scariest, and also one of the ones i’ve probably thought the most about, if only in terms of its sheer inherent horror. the moment her spell is broken is, in my opinion, one of the most satisfying in the entire story. doflamingo’s hold over the entire country snaps, just like that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the entire sequence of dressrosa’s great panic is one of my favorites in the whole series. i’m a really big fan of moments where the tides are all at once turned, and this is so very much one of those- sugar is knocked out; all the toys revert to human all at once, including kyros, who promptly decapitates (unfortunately not the real) doflamingo; sabo wins the tournament, eats the mera mera no mi, and obliterates the colosseum; and usopp becomes god.
it’s really really good.
Tumblr media
even though this is a fake doflamingo it is very satisfying to see him get wrecked, and even though i love the outcome of the luffy and law versus mingo and trebol fight i do think kyros deserved to decapitate the real thing also.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
usopp’s role and development in dressrosa is really great. it’s the most focus he’s gotten since water seven/enies lobby, and it comes at a time right when he’d been in the background for a rather long time. in dressrosa, he gets to be a proper hero- he indisputably saves the entire day not once but twice, and even doflamingo recognizes him as by far the biggest wrench in his plans- and more importantly, he gets to do it for the first time as himself, instead of having to hide behind a mask, as he did at both thriller bark and enies lobby.
Tumblr media
the way a lot of the fight panels with doflamingo specifically are drawn is very cool, i think. there’s a real sense of speed and danger to a lot of them, which makes sense, as doflamingo is a very dangerous opponent fully capable of slicing off limbs and heads with ease if his enemies make a wrong move, something both the characters and the audience are fully aware of by this point.
Tumblr media
to be continued in the next post with the rest of dressrosa!

See Which Way The Wind Will Blow - A TommyInnit Fic after 27/12
tw: most events of exile arc
Tommyinnit stands out in the snow, staring at the sunset as it turns the sky orange. Like fire, like lava. Like a certain 'most powerful weapon on the server', if you squinted hard enough.
He's leaning against a jukebox, listening to the disc Techno just gave him that morning as a Christmas present. 'Wait'. It drowns out the sound of the evening wildlife coming out to play, though it does nothing to dampen the thoughts swirling around his mind, and he swears he can still hear Techno's channel member bell from the upstairs of their house. Even though Techno would definitely have stopped by now.
He wishes the jukebox was louder. If he were somewhere else he'd sit down and put his ear right next to it, but a) he doesn't particularly want to walk back into the house later with a frozen arse, and b) Techno would probably tease him for such a frozen arse. No, if he wants the quiet he'll have to put up with the nagging voice in his head that sounds suspiciously close to his own telling him who he should and shouldn't trust. He doesn't want to listen to it. It hasn't been very accurate lately.
He indulges it for a brief moment.
Dream. Technoblade. Tubbo.
Friends, or enemies? He weighs up his options.
Dream is almost certainly an enemy. He nearly had him today: Tommy's pulse quickens slightly when he remembers Dream taunting him at the portal, threatening to burn the disc he supposedly obtained from Skeppy if he didn't go with him. He's glad Techno was there, or he might've gone. Did their little standoff ensure the safety of Cat? He has no power right now to check, to fight back, to reclaim it. Techno says to bide their time. Wait for the moment to strike, when they're ready and they've got everything they need to take on Dream, which is a lot, in all fairness. He only wishes that day is soon. Patience was never his strong point. Techno has helped him over the past week or so to stamp down on the part of him that wanted to defend Dream for being the only one there during his exile. Dream took his stuff, manipulated him, nearly drove him over the edge for good. Dream is a wrong-un. But he was the only one who came, for days and days. When Tommy had no one.
He tries not to think about being abandoned.
Technoblade then seems to be Dream's parallel opposite. His friend, his "homie", as he begrudgingly allowed this morning when he gave him 'Wait' as a Christmas gift. Techno protected him from Dream during the portal run-in, he's helping him get his discs back (giving him hope that it will actually be achieved, for the first time since before L'Manberg), he helped him defeat his scariest adversary of the day, Invisible Ghast, and didn't make fun of him too harshly, being that that incident was a terror of his own creation. Technoblade may refer to their partnership as 'strictly business', but Tommy knows he's got his back.
But, as Tommy looks back towards the cabin, and then off into the distance in the direction of a certain campsite, he can't stop the doubt creeping in. The weeds of distrust sink their roots in deep, making it impossible for you to ever be rid of them, and Tommy's been pulling up dandelions ever since the Final Control Room. Why is Technoblade really helping him? He knows the man isn't stupid (flippin' English major and his 'classical references'): the discs don't mean anything to him, and if he thinks Tommy's stance on governments has changed since the war... Has it? Sure, the government did screw him over with the whole exile thing, and it's meant he and Tubbo haven't spoken in like a month, not to mention how L'Manberg's presidents don't seem to end well so far-
Whatever Technoblade thinks he can do with Tommy, he's deluding himself, because, in a choice between the pig or the president, Tommy knows who he'd choose every time (the whole thing with the Rocket Launcher earlier served to reassure him that nothing had changed there). And on top of that, there's the worrying matter of what he and Dream spoke about at the portal. About "calling in that favour". Tommy tries not to think about doing deals with that particular devil. Tommy tries not to think about how many friends he's watched fall to Techno's newly-returned crossbow. Tommy tries not to think about how he used to call Techno a wrong-un too.
Tommy thinks instead of Tubbo. In this whole situation, he's the most confusing aspect of everything. Tommy would trust Tubbo with his life: Tubbo exiled him from the country he lost a life and two discs for. Tubbo's always been his right-hand man: today Tommy and Tubbo stood at opposite ends of a hostage situation. Tubbo has one of his discs, yet he burned the compass Ghostbur made for him (according to Dream - he'll need a raincheck on that source). Tubbo never once visited him in exile, but he says he did and wasn't invited to the beach party. Tommy fought Techno in a pit over what happened at the Manberg festival; Tubbo tried to execute Technoblade by dropping an anvil on him on a stage in the middle of L'Manberg. Tommy would still bail out his best friend in an instant: Tubbo barely said two words to him, other than "how? You're alive?"
Oh yeah, also! Tubbo thought he was dead before he showed up with Connor's life to trade. Mostly, Tommy can't really wrap his head around how they got to this point: how the two boys watching the sunset with a disk the night of the festival became so warped and unrecognisable. They'd swore to always be on the same team that night, and yet somehow it had all gone terribly wrong. With a hint of irony, Tommy was snapped back to himself in the present, the disk and the sunset, one lonely boy and his habits.
His takeaway from today? Don't take your eyes of any of them. This accursed server had shown him: so much can change in so little time. His three friendliest adversaries seemed to dance around a wheel, changing roles faster than Tommy could follow. Like the turning of a disc as it plays. What was Techno's gift called again?
Wait.
Appropriate advice from the anarchist upstairs. Don't ask how the future will be: see for yourself. Have patience. Keep your plans close to your chest and let the moment arrive without chasing it. Tommy knows that something's going to change soon, between Dream's thinly-veiled threats, Techno's swinging allegiance and Tubbo's... whatever he has going on. And now that's he's heard of a party in L'Manberg the day after tomorrow? Yeah.
Tommy's willing to wait for it.

Book Review - Summer Summary 2020
Tumblr media
I didn’t get around to doing an individual post for the books I read in June/July/August, so I decided to choose a dozen that I read over the summer... I’d separate the wheat from the chaff for you so to speak. Though like you’re about to find out, that doesn’t necessarily mean they were all good by any means...
Crave
Tumblr media
My girlfriend got this for me to “tide me over until Midnight Sun”. Between you and me, I think she was taking the piss. Anyway, Crave is very... standard fare paranormal YA school romance with the added flare of being written by an adult erotica writer, meaning the rhythm and tone of this novel is fucking bonkers. If you want to read the novel without reading the novel, just take Twilight and the entire Vampire Academy series, shove them in a blend, and force down the sludge you get from that. Normal Average Girl Goes To Secret School In Alaska For Vampire, Werewolves and Dragons. That’s this book. It is so big and so so so bad. I finished it out of spite, please don’t do that to yourself. Unless you are really craving (hurr hurr) some top tier trashy paranormal romance, in which case... no judgment.
The Last Firehawk
Tumblr media
The Last Firehawk is a Scholastic “Branches” series, written for beginning readers (grade 1-3ish, depending on the child’s reading level). It has short stories, big text, and awesome pictures on every page. Guys. I unironically am adoring this series. It’s simple and is introducing children to a number of classic elements in the fantasy quest genre, but it is so charming. Friends Tag and Skyla discover a firehawk egg, and species that is supposed to have disappeared long ago. When Blaze hatches from it, the three are tasked with going out and finding the magical ember stone which was hidden long ago by the firehawks and which could be used to defeat the evil vulture Thorn and his dark magic... I read the first two books to second graders who ate it up and read the next four books because I personally wanted to continue the series. If you have young readers in your life (or just want a fun kid adventure) then please try these they’re the literary equivalent of nibbling on a chocolate chip cookie.
Lupin III: World’s Most Wanted #3
Tumblr media
All the kind people that still follow my tumblr and haven’t tried to murder me because of my Lupin obsession are not going to be surprised by this one. I finally read one of the manga for this series and honestly I’m delighted. Somehow even hornier than the show, but hilariously funny. I felt like I was reading a more adult version of Spy Vs Spy. It’s a bunch of short, individual bits/adventures with lots of visual gags and an artstyle that is really different and delightful.
River of Teeth / Taste of Marrow (American Hippo series)
Tumblr media
I’ve talked about River of Teeth before, but I finally finished the American Hippo duology and need to sing its praise. This is an alternate history series composed of two novellas that explore the question What would have happened if the States had decided to import hippos as livestock...? Anyways, my pitch for you: queer hippo cowboys. That’s all it took for me to read it. You have a gay gunslinger who loves his hippo to death, a nonbinary explosives-expert / poisoner who is the main love interest, a fat con artist who spoils her hippo and is the only voice of reason in this entire series, and a latina mother-to-be who is the scariest assassin in the entire series and is obviously scheming. The four of them are brought together on a job to deal with the Mississippi’s feral hippo problem.
IT’S A QUEER HIPPO COWBOY HEIST NOVEL GUYS I DON’T KNOW WHY I’M STILL TALKING AND YOU HAVEN’T JUST GONE TO READ THIS YET.
Petals to the Metal (The Adventure Zone series)
Tumblr media
The graphic novel adaptation to the McElroy family’s DND podcast The Adventure Zone. Most of you are probably aware of this? It’s a great adaptation, it hits all the important beats, shows off the characters really well, and still gets lots of good gags in even while condensing entire arcs into single book stories. This one is probably my favourite so far just because Petals to the Metal was one of my favourite arcs in the show... but you can also see how the art has improved and the chaos of the race is fun to see drawn out.
If you like The Adventure Zone but haven’t tried the graphic novels yet -- would recommend! If you’ve always wanted to listen to The Adventure Zone but don’t have time for such a long series or struggle to focus on podcasts then pick up the first book of this series (Here There Be Gerblins) and try reading it! It really is an enjoyable adaptation.
Pony to the Rescue (Pony Pals series)
Tumblr media
I continued my April/May theme of reading old-school chapter book series to combat Covid Brain Fry, so I picked up a few Pony Pals books. I read these as a kid and always enjoy them -- there’s just something so appealing to a child about having a horse. It gives your child characters a level of independence and ability to explore that you wouldn’t get otherwise. These books definitely read young, but they were nostalgic to revisit.
Small Spaces
Tumblr media
A really cool middle grade horror novel I picked up. Maybe it’s because I live around a lot of corn fields, but farm/scarecrow themed horror absolutely does it for me. One evening, after seeing a woman try to destroy a strange, old book, eleven year old Ollie doesn’t stop to think, instead stealing the book and running. That’s how she becomes wrapped up in the strange, sinister story of a cursed family and creature called the Smiling Man that seems to live out in the foggy fields. While unsettling, Ollie tries to remind herself that it’s just a story... but this becomes more challenging when her school bus breaks down one day out their own set of fields, and a fog is rolling in...
“Avoid large spaces. Stick to small.”
Snot Girl #1 - #2
Tumblr media
A Canadian graphic novel series by the creator of the Scott Pilgrim series! I love his work so I decided to give Snotgirl a try, even though it’s not generally my genre. I’m glad I did! First book took a while for me to get into, but by the time I hit the second I was really wrapped up in the mystery and character development. Snotgirl is about Lottie, a self-consumed fashion blogger whose biggest struggles are dealing with her allergies, frustration with her fellow-blogger friends, and how entirely her self-esteem is tied to her “beauty” and how people view her. But everything shifts in strange and horrifying ways when Lottie starts taking a new allergy medication, meets a new friend... and then witnesses that girl’s death. Or does she?
Seriously, or does she? I have no idea, I need to read the third book. This book is full of intrigue, complicated relationships, murder (or not?), and a healthy dose of magical realism to keep you guessing. If you like slice-of-life, crime, and abstract reality then this series is world a try. Plus the art is gorgeous.
Summer Wars #1 - #2
Tumblr media
I recently rewatched Summer Wars (still one of my favourite movies) and decided to read the two-book manga adaptation. It was a really neat little adaptation. The creator of the movie gave the writer free range to tweak things to fit better in a manga format, which means some movie elements were allowed to fade into the background, whereas other aspects were fulled into the forefront and fleshed out to a greater degree. It was very cool, it kept the same story but gave you new things to think about which I wasn’t expecting. Reading this as a stand alone works just fine, but honestly if you’ve never watched the movie Summer Wars you should give it a try! It’s a great mix of slice-of-life, sprawling family dynamics that I relate to a little too well, cyber adventures, and fantasy. Super feel good.
This One Summer
Tumblr media
Okay, last graphic novel, I swear. This One Summer was... weird and intense. It’s a coming-of-age Canadian graphic novel that follows a pair of pre-teens who meet up like they do every year at their family’s summer cottages. You see them both in the awkward phases between childhood and growing up to become teenagers, as they’re confronted with things like maturity, friendship, self-esteem, family problems, and sexuality. A beautiful read, but probably the heaviest out of all the books on my list.
Wild Thornberrys Novelization
Tumblr media
I rewatched The Wild Thornberrys movie with my girlfriend earlier this year, and decided I wanted to hunt down the chapter book novelization because I’m kind of a sucker for novelizations. Honestly, this was about what you would expect from the era. 90s/00s novelizations, especially young novelizations, are generally just a transcript of the movie without much thought or effort put into them to make them anything but. That’s what this was. It was fine, and it really let me revisualize the entire movie, but honestly you’re probably better off just rewatching the movie unless you also really deeply love The Wild Thornberrys.
The Willoughbys
Tumblr media
I saw that Netflix had done a funky looking adaptation of The Willoughbys and I decided I needed to read the book first before watching the movie. This was a little bizarre, I’m still not sure how I feel about it. Over all, I think it was a net-positive experience. It’s an obvious satire on classic children’s novels, especially the likes of Mary Poppins (real Mary Poppins, not the Disney version) and while a little heavy-handed, it does a Series of Unfortunate Events vibe that redeems it. The story is about a group of horrible children (The Ruthless Willoughbys) who decide they are sick of their parents and would rather become Worth Orphans... and to do that, they’re going to have to dispose of their inconvenient parents, obviously. Conveniently their parents are also sick of having children and decide to do away with them as well. The Willoughbys sets up three (or four?) different subplots that are gradually woven together through a series of schemes and exploits. It’s definitely more ruthless (hurr hurr) than the Netflix version, which tried to make the children more sympathetic, and in some ways I think that’s a definite point in the novel’s favour. I’m not sure I would go out of my way to recommend it, but it was a fun romp if you want something short and off the wall (and a lot more fleshed out than the Netflix version).

This Was Almost a Good Day
By @garbotuesday for @lbigreyhound13 for the @friendly-neighborhood-exchange
Rating: None
Relationships: Irondad
Characters: Tony Stark, Peter Parker, May Parker
Summary: Internal bleeding, blunt force trauma to the head, bones in shards, a heart rate that is rapidly dropping - but wasn’t Peter just on his way to the compound? What the hell could he get caught up in that would cause all that?
Super excited to have this done! I was strangely uninspired until the eleventh hour.
Here’s how to ruin a Saturday morning.
Let’s break it down into steps:
Step 1 - start by finding a kid with spider powers and an unshakable moral foundation and give him a multimillion dollar super suit. People will tell you later this was not the greatest move. After the kid gets home and tries to go too hard too fast, you try to take it back, but it becomes pretty obvious that this kid needs the suit or he’s going to die in a fireball. Besides, he helped you out, and you like him a little bit. So you give it back, and this time you decide you’re going to be keeping a much closer eye on him. You offer him a spot on the team, and after he shocks the hell out of you by turning you down, start drafting preliminary ideas on how you can keep closer tabs on this kid.
Step 2 - that same day, field an angry phone call from the kid’s aunt who walked in on said kid in said super suit. You don’t really manage to get a word in edgewise as this woman goes through all five stages of grief on the phone with you. By the end of the phone call the only thing you’ve managed to do is meekly say that you’d like to teach him to be safe, and after a moment’s pause you get a “you had better,” hissed in your ear before the call is disconnected. You’re a little scared, so you text the kid and tell him that he needs to come over this weekend so they can start training him.
Step 3 - neglect to send Happy to pick the kid up to bring him to the compound. Now this one isn’t really your fault - you did offer, the day before in a text thread, but the kid turned you down and said he’d ride the subway. You mentioned to him that the subway line ended well before the compound, but after a minute more of texting you understand that he just wants to swing over. You should have put your foot down, you know you should have, but you were amused. Surely if the kid had managed to bring down a plane full of weapons without hurting anyone, he can manage a 30 minute swing to the compound.
And finally step 4 - forget exactly how deep that self-sacrificing thing goes with this kid.
Tony follows these steps and finds that he really should have seen some of this coming.
FRIDAY lets him know before Peter’s aunt does. FRIDAY’s overhead speakers let out a soft but urgent beep, grabbing Tony’s attention from his coffee. With no further prompting, a set of holographic statistics appear in his 3D work field. He recognizes that they’re coming from Peter’s suit, but he can’t make sense of what they’re saying to him. Internal bleeding, blunt force trauma to the head, bones in shards, a heart rate that is rapidly dropping - but wasn’t Peter just on his way to the compound? What the hell could he get caught up in that would cause all that?
“You have a call coming in on your phone,” FRIDAY says. “From Peter’s aunt.”
Tony hasn’t the faintest idea where his phone is, and FRIDAY seems to know that, because without his prompting the phone is answered and May’s voice comes from above him.
“Tony,” she says, and Tony can hear the raw red of panic in her voice.
“I see it,” he tells her. “It just popped up on my screen. Where are you?”
“I’m at the scene. I’m filling in as part of the first response team.”
Tony swallows, finds he can’t. Tries again. “How bad is it?”
“He isn’t here,” she whispers.
Tony blinks and checks the holograms again. They’re steadily getting worse in a way that has Tony standing now. “He already got taken to the hospital?”
“No, he’s just not here. He wasn’t here when we showed up.”
Tony pauses. “How can you tell that he should be there?”
“Two cars, head-on collision. They each have a large dent in the hood in the same spot that looks like …like hands..and-and like-” She can’t finish. She doesn’t have to. Tony can imagine the Peter-shaped divot in both cars where Peter put himself between them so the cars would hit him instead of each other.
“How is he not there if he - if he was -” Well shit. Tony can’t bring himself to say it either.
“I don’t know,” May whispers. “But can you - I mean I can’t - but I should -”
“I’ll find him,” Tony says. “You stay there. I’ll find him and I’ll take care of him.”
She goes quiet. “I still don’t trust you,” she finally says.
Tony swallows. “I know.”
They listen to each other breathe on the line for a moment longer before she gruffly says “prove me wrong, Stark,” and hangs up.
Tony takes a breath and puts his phone down. “Find him, FRIDAY.”
“Locating now,” she intones, dimming the lights on Tony’s work station and powering up the Iron Man suit in the corner. Tony lets the suit wrap around him and looks over the information on his HUD, searching for the tracking information from the secret trackers he installed after learning Peter couldn’t be trusted. The screen pings with the location and Tony takes off, arcing out through the window that opens whenever he gets into the suit. There is no inconspicuous way to shoot through the air as Iron Man, so he settles for being too fast to garner much more than passing attention. He hopes May sees the trail he leaves behind and feels somewhat comforted.
Tony finds him at his apartment, but on the roof instead of indoors. Tony lands on the roof and steps out of the suit in a frantic heap to find Peter laying flat against the rooftop. His mask is in his hands, palms over his eyes, and he’s making a small hiccuping grunt that sounds so pitiful Tony rushes straight for him.
“Peter,” he says, dropping down to his knees beside the kid. “Peter, I’m here.”
Peter pulls his hands away from his eyes and blinks at Tony. His face is red and tear tracks have cut through the grime on his cheeks, but he’s long since stopped crying. “Mr. Stark? H’w ‘re you here?”
“I came to find you,” Tony says, eyes roving over Peter’s body. “How bad is it?”
“’S fine,” Peter slurs, wiping his hands over his face. “Jus’ need a minute.”
Tony doesn’t love the idea of rolling his eyes at this kid who may or may not have a crushed midsection, but he definitely grits his teeth. “Yeah, that tracks. Two cars plow into you and I get the scariest vital report I’ve ever seen in my life, but sure, you just ‘need a minute’.”
Peter parts his fingers and eyes Tony curiously. “How’d you know? Suit rat me out?”
Now Tony glares. “Your aunt. She’s on the first response team today and got a little suspicious when she caught sight of two cars with the very distinct impression of her nephews handprints embedded in the goddamn hood.” He didn’t know he was yelling until Peter winced away from him with a look of pain on his face.
“Sorry,” Tony says immediately. “Sorry. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t yell. Not until we get you checked out.”
“I can’t move anymore,” Peter says flatly.
“I’ll pick you up in the suit, it’ll be-”
“No, I mean I cannot be physically moved from this spot,” Peter says, voice edge with desperation screaming please don’t touch me. “How I managed to swing all the way over here is a mystery to me, but I promise you, I will not be conscious if you try to move me.”
Tony looks him over, tries not to be panicked over the definite depression in Peter’s middle, and takes a breath. “Kid, moving you is non-negotiable. You need a hospital.” He opens his mouth to ask if Peter thinks his aunt could possibly borrow the ambulance when he stumbles over his words because fuck, something just clicked. “Is that why you bailed on the scene of the accident? So they wouldn’t take you to the hospital?”
There’s a half second of silence between the two of them. Peter blinks up at him, face pain-pinched and guilty, and Tony actually has to take a deep breath. Peter whimpers.
“I’m part spider,” Peter stutters. “My identity, you know, I mean, they’d be able to figure it out.”
“Okay,” Tony says. “Let’s pretend that any of that was a valid reason not to go to the hospital. What exactly was the plan once you hit the rooftop?”
Stop it, Tony snaps to himself. Peter is injured and you’re screaming at him.
Peter wipes his hands over his face. “I didn’t know what else to do.”
“You call me.” Tony’s voice is deep and furious, and it makes them both flinch. Tony continues. “When you’re on the roof of your building and you’re too injured to move, you call me, dammit!”
Peter blinks up at him with wide eyes. “Wh…why?”
Tony’s blood freezes. His heartbeat, which he could taste on his tongue, beats once and goes still. “What?”
Peter’s face scrunches up. “Why would I call you?”
It’s like being hit, the force of Tony’s shock. Why? Why?? “Why would you…kid, you -” Tony can’t even think. All he can sense is the taste of failure hot on the end of his tongue, the sharp startling realization that this kid was going to internally bleed to death on the hot roof of his apartment building instead of reaching out for help because he didn’t think he could call Tony.
There’s something there, something Tony isn’t ready to address that involves his own father’s irritation and the deep understanding that he would never be able to ask for help. Whatever it was it paid dividends - Peter isn’t even his kid and he already knows better than to trust Tony.
“I heal fast,” Peter mutters. His breath is starting to sound more difficult. “Didn’t want to..to bother you.”
And what reason would Peter have to think it was anything other than a bother? He and Happy haven’t exactly been subtle about how annoyed they’d been with Peter’s repeated calls and antics. And it can’t be denied that the phone calls began to become a bit much after the 80th one, but this is like…fuck, Tony doesn’t even know what to say about this. It’s only now that Tony realizes, despite what he told Peter when he gave him the suit, that Peter genuinely doesn’t know what the grey area looks like - either Peter tells them about every cat he sees during patrol or he dies on a roof in silence.
Tony hits a button on his watch and starts the process of requesting the fastest med-evac known to man to his location. He handpicks the nurses that will help them out for their discretion, not that it matters. He’s not going to let anyone see Peter’s face.
That done, he turns back to Peter, who he can tell is starting to fade into unconsciousness. “Try to stay with me,” Tony tells him. “Cavalry’s on the way, maybe three minutes out.”
“No hospital,” Peter bubbles.
“You’ll have whatever they think is necessary,” Tony says firmly, laying a hand on Peter’s arm. “I’ll deal with the rest of it.”
They sit in silence for a second before Tony gruffly says, “Just promise me you’ll call me next time.”
“Didn’t wann’ bo..botherooo.” Peter is almost completely down for the count.
Tony is quiet for a minute. He’s never been good at saying the heavy stuff, especially when he knows he should. But dammit, this is important. Tony unglues his tongue from the roof of his mouth and says, “you’re not a bother, Peter. If it has to be all or nothing, I’d rather have it all. Go back to telling me about your homework, and your friends, and the dogs you help rescue. I’ll only be bothered by the silence.”
“Oh. ‘Kay,” Peter says. His eyes have shut.
“I’m serious, Peter. If I go two days without hearing about your grades, there’ll be trouble.”
Tony is surprised by the sound of Peter’s rolling laugh, strained and breathless but entirely genuine. “’Sound like sucsh a dad,” he slurs.
A bit of wind whips around them and Tony looks up to see the med-evac, right on schedule. “Perhaps,” he says, looking dad at Peter’s relaxed form. “But no one will ever believe you.”

I started wondering who's the scariest character in gladiator. Shaofeng is creepy in a schemers way. Combustion Man, well duh. A few of Sokka's enemy gladiators were intimidating but not scary. Sokka himself could be scary if his dark side conquered him, so Evil Sokka. Ozai's executioner was super scary originally with lots of buildup, but he was defeated so easily its hard to be scared of him anymore. Long Feng is also creepy. But to my shock, this arc made me pick Iroh. Know what I mean?
... You are wise, Anon. Very wise :)
I won’t really say our Iroh is scary in a simple, classic sense of the word? It’s really not like that here. As I was telling someone else recently, try as though I might, I can’t ever conceive characters in Gladiator as heroes or villains in the simplistic senses of those categories. Iroh may come off as crazy villainous to some people in this arc, but ultimately, it’s not because he’s super evil or something as simplistic as that: technically, he’s trying to confirm Azula isn’t who he always thought he was. The problem is, of course, that he’s going about it in a way that only convinces Azula that she absolutely CANNOT trust the guy, and that generates our huge conflict! :’D
But anyway, the problem with Iroh isn’t so much what he can do as a fighter, heck, it’s not even his connections as a member of the White Lotus: it’s the fact that he has more power, and more strength of character in some senses than many other characters do. Iroh, simply put, has a key role to play in the unfolding of this story, a role that basically only he has the guts to play. And that’s precisely what makes him scary, and what makes him a real threat to be daunted by. Yes, I believe you’re right to pick him, 100%
I think Shaofeng can be a runner-up in that contest, to a fault, but he as well isn’t some invulnerable monstruosity of a character who everyone should be scared of. He’s another problem to be resolved, someone who’s got corrupt dealings deeply imbedded and intertwined with the roots of the Fire Nation’s current rule, and he’ll do whatever he needs to do to stay afloat with the power he still holds. So in that sense he resembles Iroh, it’s not so much about physical power but about his influence, about how he’s been pulling strings in the shadows for many dark things and absolutely needs to be stopped, despite so far our characters are mostly in the dark about what he’s been up to and how deep his influence runs.
The others you mentioned... yeah, Sokka’s fought a few dangerous people, for sure. Combustion Man probably ought to be scary, in some ways? xD I really hope his fights (because yes, we will see two more of those) will make it clear this guy is a menace and cannot be underestimated. And well, I wouldn’t underestimate Seethus, even if he’s defeatable, because... well... I can’t even say what I’m thinking about right now but you’ll probably understand it when the story gets there x’D maybe he’ll look a bit scarier once we reach chapters 226-232...? I’m not going to explain why, you’ll have to wait til we get there xD
But heh, Dark Sokka is a goddamn terrifying menace of his own xD Evidently, we may not be that scared of him because as we know, he intends to use that darkness to protect Azula from absolutely anything that dares threaten her... but I just really hope everyone keeps in mind that this man is capable of some REALLY insane things. Things we’ll mostly see in Part 3, but still... the whole world is likely to cower and quiver in the face of a Blue Wolf’s wrath (?)

LATE
Danganronpa Autumn Week 2020
Day 4- harvest and field/orchard
OUMAMI
Sorry this is late. Had a lot of person problems rise up and my brain said depression time. But I did want to get this out! It's a bit rushed though
------------------------------------------
"Hurry up!" Kokichi's childlike voice shouted. "I've been ready for an hour now!" He stomped hia foot down on the ground.
"Yeah? That's because you were up earlier than I was." Rantaro pulled out a chair from the dining room table and sat down to tie his boot.
"Why did we even have to wait this long into October to go!" Beside Rantaro, Kokichi leaned on the table with a sigh, close enough to where if he turned anymore, he would fall into Rantaro's lap.
"Because." Rantaro switched feet and leaned down. "Isn't it more fun to visit a pumpkin patch closer to Halloween? Your pumpkin won't rot before then. You don't want a sunken in pumpkin face do you?" He lifted his head to face Kokichi, a small crooked smile as he teased.
Kokichi immediately stood upright, his hands folding behind his head. "That's what you think. I'd welcome a rotting pumpkin. It will remind me of my dear Rantaro's beautifully rotting face."
Suddenly Rantaro's deep, rich laugh filled the room. "Yeah you're right. I'd be the scariest decoration on the porch wouldn't I?"
"Yes! But only because your seperate head would be on the front porch."
"Shut the fuck up." Rantaro got up and pushed the chair back into it's place. "Make sure you grab whatever you wanna take and let's go."
Kokichi turned and began to walk towards the front door. "I only need your wallet and my keys and I'm good." He giggled and looked back to see Rantaro shoving his arms through his jacket, an eyebrow raised as he pulled his keys out of his pocket.
"Very funny. No get to the car."
Rantaro may have been born into a well off family, but he liked to keep his belongings more rustic. That included his car. An older model made for off-roading, as he did in many of his adventures. They road for 40 minutes into the country and away from the city life they were used to. A halloween playlist blared from Kokichi's phone connected by an aux chord. The buildings turned into vast pastures with small farm houses and tall trees that only had half of their leaves still on them.
They pulled into a gated ranch and parked in the grass next to some other cars that also had to be visitors. On one side of the field there was a small one story house with a wrap around porch. Complete with rocking chairs and potted plants out front for the old vintage look. On the other side, a red barn with a green corn maze, the pumpkin patch, and a few other activities spread over the arces.
Kokichi jumped out of the car and brought both fist up to his chest, eyes wide with excitement. "Rantaro, it's so cool already!"
Rantaro hit the lock button on his keys. "Not many people out yet so I think we came at the right time."
"Come on let's go I wanna do the petting zoo first!' Kokichi bounced over to Rantaro and tugged on his sleeve as he was digging out cash from his pocket.
"Hell yeah I wanna see a goat."
"Of course you do. You sound just like one when you laugh." Kokichi teased.
"Man I wish. Do you know how funny that would be?" Rantaro was always quick to deflect. He put some money into a small honesty box the farm had set up as you entered the gate. This served as the admission fee.
Once inside, they filled their morning with activities. First the petting zoo where Kokichi was able to feed some of the small animals the farm had. Rantaro got the chance to have a staring contest with one of the goats and unfortunately lost.
Next, because of Kokichi's size, he was able to ride on one of the small pony's they had displayed.
"Damn I can't believe they've got a real unicorn. That's so magical." Rantaro pointed out as he looked at the iridescent horn they had attached to the pony's head.
"Stop! You're going to hurt his feelings!"
Thirdly, they came across the hay ride. Someone who lived on site got up on a horse and allowed other guests to ride in the trailer on the back that was filled with hay. It was a quick go around but being able to see just how big the pasture had been was amazing for them.
It was on that ride that Kokichi noticed a both for face painting.
"Please please please!" He begged Rantaro.
"Sure go ahead. Just stay still so they can make it look nice."
"Isnt the point to be scary for Halloween?"
"Not at a family friendly event its not." He nudged Kokichi. "Plus you're just going to get the clown makeup anyway."
Kokichi leaned back in disbelief. "Rantaro I'm hurt! I was thinking of other things to get. Its like you don't even know me at all!" He pouted.
"Alright you're right. Go ahead and get your face done and I'm going to grab some apple cider."
Kokichi's frown immediately turned back into his childlike expression as he went off to the booth.
It didn't take long for Rantaro to find the food stand and grab a cup of apple cider and make his way back to the face painting booth where Kokichi was finishing up.
"Hey looking good clown." He sipped on the cup.
"Oh shut up Rantaro." He mumbled, unable to move his face much.
Rantaro couldn't help but laugh. Finally Kokichi seemed to be subdued.
Makeover done and cider finished, they found themselves in the next to last activity, the corn maze.
"Have you ever seen Children of the Corn?" Kokichi asked.
"Nah, I don't think so. I don't remember."
"Good." A wide smile creeped across his face.
"Wait what are you smiling about?"
"Oh nothing! Maybe! You gotta find me and then maybe I'll tell you!" Kokichi slid through the corn stalks and out of sight.
A slight panic rose in Rantaro. What was Kokichi up to? Would he get lost? What if he didn't find him after this? He shook his head and started off in the direction Kokichi ran and began his search.
Everytime he would turn a corner, he swore he saw a checkered scarf run past but he couldn't be too sure. He would go off the path for a bit, pulling the stalks back and trying not the break the husks.
After a while he just stood in an open part of the maze, surrounded by the corn. Kokichi was a master at this and it left Rantaro having to look for small weak spots in Kokichi's plans.
Suddenly there was some rustling in the corn to the left of him. Bingo.  He cautiously walked over, trying not to make any noise to alert Kokichi of him noticing him. He slowly reached out his hands in between the stalks and quickly shoved them apart to reveal….a squirrel. Rantaro sighed. He really thought he had him.
Instead it was him that had been played. Soon a small force shoved into him, arms wrapped around him from the side with a he-yah!
"Got you Rantaro! You're super bad at this!" Kokichi looked up at him, his chin rested on Rantaro's arm.
Rantaro tried to hide the relief as he was finally reunited with Kokichi. "Damn. Cant believe you got me again. I knew you were working with the squirrels." He lifted a hand up and tussled the hair on Kokichi's head, causing him to let go and shake his head away from Rantaro's head.
"That's a secret I'll never tell!"
"Why am I not surprised?" He smiled. "Hey let's go pick out our pumpkins now okay? I think that was like the last thing."
"Okay!"
They made their way back towards the front to the large pumpkin patch. People were walking through taking pictures and holding up different sizes from small pie pumpkins, to large ones that were great for displays.
"Go ahead and pick one okay?"
"Ran-Ran can't we get three? One for each of us and then we can carve one together!"
"Oh totally we can do that. But that's it okay?"
Instead of answering, Kokichi zoomed into the patch and began picking different pumpkins up to examine them. He would turn them over and pat them to listen for the slap noise.
"You have to listen for the good noise to know if its worthy!" Kokochi said matter of factly as he lifted one up. "I chose this one!"
"Its way bigger than your head. Are you sure you want to put that much effort into carving it?"
"Yes! I have so many ideas!" Kokichi tucked it under his arm and began looking around for one they could both do.
Rantaro spent a bit more time until finally coming across one that had a nice flat surface for carving. "Alright. I found my boy. Did you find one for us both to do?"
Kokichi held out the pumpkin he chose for Rantaro to take so it would free his hands up. Rantaro shifted each pumpkin under his arm and held them in place as Kokichi kept looking around for the perfect pumpkin.
Finally Kokichi's foot kicked a pumpkin when he wasn't looking. He caught himself before he fell and looked down at it. "Aha!" He leaned down and picked it up. Perfectly oval to allow them both room on each side to work with. "I found it!"
"Sweet. Let's go get checked out then okay?"
They got through the line with ease and made their way back to the car. Rantaro also picked up a jar of homemade jam they had available at the register.
"Hey Ran Ran?" Kokichi asked as he buckled up.
"What's up?"
"Thank you for hanging out with me today and taking me out here. It really meant a lot."
Rantaro could tell Kokichi was having a hard time being vulnerable. "Hey, it's really no problem. I had a great time this morning. And you know it's not over yet. We still gotta carve em." He smiled and turned the key until the car started.
"Oohh! And can we bake the seeds and make roasted pumpkin seeds please!"
"Shit those are my favorite. Of course we can Kichi."

Hey GP I'm back (you dont know who I am but I've asked so many questions ever since I found your blog and I love it) here's a question that's a bit different: what are your favourite marvel/star wars movies? Who's your favourite character and side character? Which character has an arc you like? Did you like the Star Wars sequel trilogy? What are the things youd change about the movies?
Ooh, non-Phantom questions!
My favorite Star Wars movie is probably The Empire Strikes Back (though emotionally, Return of the Jedi hits hardest), which, I know, such a common response. But it is just a near-perfect sequel and movie in my eyes; I can pretty much open it at just about any scene and get sucked in. Great pacing, great tension, all the characters develop in ways that make sense and continue from the first one while still striking new territory, the new characters are all memorable, there’s a very real sense of stakes. And of course, this is where we see Darth Vader (favorite character, nobody else even comes close) at his scariest and most independent, just hell-bent on catching Luke.
My favorite Marvel movie is probably Captain America: The Winter Soldier (though honorable mentions to Spider-Man: Homecoming and Black Panther). Kind of like the above, just a near-perfect sequel, a wonderful blend of political spy thriller and superhero movie, not afraid to be totally serious in its tone and themes (not many jokes to kill the tension here), but with a wonderful optimism about ordinary people and their resistance to evil. And also, let me just say: BUCKY, aaaggghhh, somebody save you from your horrible life! The movie is built on that relationship between Steve and Bucky and its that emotional underpinning that just grabbed hold of me and never let go.
I think I kind of answered the questions there about favorite characters there, but I will say that in terms of arcs, I did like the various ones the five main characters undertook in The Last Jedi: Rey letting go of her family, Finn learning to stop running away, Poe becoming a leader, Rose becoming the hero she had only heard about, and Kylo Ren, er, deciding that traditions suck and to burn everything down. One can debate how well those arcs were done and if they made the movie feel too packed, but I appreciated that some thought went into all of them.
Also, while I did not much care for a lot about Captain America: Civil War, I did enjoy that it was the culmination of Tony Stark’s and Steve Rogers’s arcs from the previous movies, with Tony going along with the Sokovia Accords because he acknowledges that, as a bit of a loose cannon, he needs some guidance, and Steve having learned from his experiences that authority may not be trustworthy. It almost feels like the opposite of what one might expect from the characters when you first meet them, but to me it made sense given everything the two had gone through in their respective movies.
And oh boy, the Star Wars sequel trilogy. What a mess. What a waste of potential. I really enjoyed the first one, even if it relied heavily on nostalgia fuel; the second I appreciated for wanting to change things up and how it furthered the characters and themes, even if some of its execution was... wonky; and the third was such a disappointment it made me temporarily quit Star Wars. Forget the rest of the movies, I’d change almost everything about the third one: simplify the plotline (why are we traveling to so many planets); simplify the amount of characters and stop straight-baiting or whatever Finn and Poe; put Rose back dammit; give Finn and Poe something to do besides following Rey around and arguing with her; no more Emperor Palpatine period; keep the twist that Rey’s parents were nobodies; give Kylo Ren a decent redemption arc that doesn’t involve him dying at the end; and stop relying on the nostalgia of the OT, for goodness sake. There, we can start with that.

Not super relevant just yet, but I thought I’d put out a feeler.
I don’t have high hopes, given the volume and the… hmm, shall we say, niche pairing, but. Does anyone feel like selling their soul beta reading an absolute beast of a DekuMight fic? If so, please DM me.
Currently sitting at 10/23 chapters, 145k. (You thought I was kidding about the volume? I wasn’t. I’ve been tackling this monster for over a year and the end is still far away.) I’m devoting December to do a first round of edits, and then the first half will theoretically be ready for proofing.
Summary, content warnings – do read them, this has some heavy stuff! – and excerpts under the cut.
I’m an ESL writer so I always feel more confident when a native speaker checks my SPaG. (That said, I’m going to start publishing this eventually whether someone volunteers or not :D)

Summary:
If Izuku hadn’t fallen in love, they would still orbit around each other. They would have gone on growing closer as mentor and protégé, confidants, friends; the easy bond between them brimming with trust, care and devotion. With time, Izuku might have come to view him as a parental figure.
But Izuku fell in love.
And so he tugs on that bond – not to pull him in by force, but to show him that he is wanted.
The bond twists out of shape, and the earth keeps turning anyway.
--------------------
Experts from various chapters that I think show their dynamic and the general feel of the story pretty well:
“See, this kind of thinking is exactly why I fiercely believe that you’ll be a much better Hero than I ever was.” All Might smiles, and finally it’s something genuine and soft. “Fifteen years from now on, people won’t even remember All Might anymore, his deeds forgotten after the stunning brilliance that is his successor.”
Izuku shakes his head. “That’s not happening. You are a legend! People look up to you, respect you, love you! You’ve inspired entire generatio–”
“Ah, but it’s not really me they love. It’s the Hero I created. The Symbol of Peace, the Pillar of Hope… They have no idea ‘All Might’ is just a front for a pitiful man who has no idea what he’s doing most of the time and commits mistakes left and right.” He pointedly raises a brow. “Like not realizing his precious student is ready to self-destruct to make him proud, for example.”
“People would feel the same way about you even if they knew the truth,” Izuku insists, ignoring the quip. “Maybe they’d be shocked at first, but it would pass. I’m sure of it. And even if you’ve made mistakes, that doesn’t negate all the good you’ve done as a Hero. Saying ‘it’s not me, it’s the Hero I created’… that’s so stupid! There’s only one you! It’s not like– it’s not like you’ve tricked people!”
“I did trick them. I’ve never been completely honest, always presented a front. What they love is the idea of All Might – the idea of someone good and righteous and infallible. Not the sad, sick old man hiding behind it. And I can understand why. I mean…”  He gestures at himself with a smile that’s more like an embarrassed grimace. Izuku would claw it off his face if he could. “The real me is hardly the hope-inspiring beacon of light they expect the No. 1 Hero to be. One day soon, the truth will come out, and believe me, kid, no one will claim to love All Might after.”
Izuku is speechless. His throat is tight, his chest is hot… His core feels bruised.
He hates this. He hates, hates, hates it when All Might gets like this. A part of him wants to cry. Another wants to grab the man and shake him until he sees sense.
--------------------
It’s his fault, isn’t it. Surely, there had been signs. Red flags. Looking back, he can spot them now… But Toshinori was so delighted to have made such an intimate connection, so relieved to have someone accept him fully that he didn’t stop to think about the potential consequences. Someone his age shouldn’t have been so eager to become friends with a teenager, let alone one who thought of him as an idol. He should have realized earlier that what they had going on wasn’t proper.
Was he so desperate for companionship that he forced it on the boy? Was it his neediness that led Midoriya to warp their connection into something it’s not, something it cannot be?
--------------------
I love you so much, Izuku thinks with despair. Whenever I see you walk by in U.A., my throat constricts. At this point, I’ll need a heart transplant by the time I’m twenty because it’s constantly on the verge of bursting and that can’t be healthy.
The other day, I dreamt about a villain who had the ability to age people up or down. She used it for evil things – turning her enemies into fragile old people or helpless babies. I knew it was bad, but I approached her and begged her to age me up anyway, even at the cost of losing decades of my life. The scariest part of this is that even after I woke up, I wasn’t convinced I wouldn’t do the same in real life.
They say first loves rarely last. That they are sweet and innocent. But that can’t be right, because what I feel is harsh and painful, and I don’t see how it would be possible to feel more. If this monstrous thing in my chest is just a “fleeting, gentle first love”, then surely the all-encompassing true love people speak of would actually kill me?
I love you, and I wish I could show that without hurting you.
I wish. I wish. I wish. Getting to know you, receiving your trust and friendship, being allowed to study at U.A… I should be the happiest I’ve ever been. But I just keep wishing for what-ifs.
The one thing I don’t wish for is for these feelings to go away. Despite everything, I don’t regret being in love with you.
How nice it would be, if I could tell you these things out loud. If you’d be embarrassed and flattered and maybe just a little bit happy instead of fearful and worried.
Izuku swallows around the lump in his throat and doesn’t say a word.
--------------------
The beeping has him stressed out and sweating within seconds. Then the line clicks, and Toshinori stops breathing.
“Hey.”
He’s never heard Midoriya sound so small and shy. He’s always been larger than life, brighter than a supernova.
Toshinori swallows before confessing, “I don’t know what to do. How to handle this.”
A sigh on the other end of the line. “That makes two of us.”
--------------------
Alternate summary: troubled “crippling self-esteem issues, my old friend” area man and besotted “horny on main” teen try to figure their shit out across 300k or more, panic only for about 80% of that

*SU Spoiler* SUF Predictions
We finally got the first teaser trailer for “Steven Universe Future” and did it deliver! For a 30 second promo it was packed with so much new information! With this information, I wanted to put my thoughts on what might happen. After watching some YouTube videos from RoundTable, Toon Ruins, and Cartoon Universe, I wanted to put my own thoughts from what might happen in “Steven Universe: Future”. Instead of examining clip by clip in order from the promo, this will be how certain clips will relate to future episodes of the series. Let’s get cracking!
(I was going to use GIFS and Pictures, but the site I use was not working so if you have seen the trailer you know what I am talking about and if not go see it!)
1) Steven is showing a new Gem around Little Homeworld
It seems there is a new Gem that has been recently uncorrupted. At first, they may look like a corrupted Gem due to the horns and mixed-colored spots, but they are more humanoid then monster like and seems to have full control of themselves. Much like Jasper, the effects of corruption are still shown in their appearance, but it does not affect anything else. Steven is showing this new Gem around little Homeworld: Garnet teaching a group on meditation or yoga, an art class taught by Vidalia, and Bismuth forging something with the Heaven and Earth Gems. All is peaceful and we get to see how Gems can chose their leisurely time. We get to see how new Gems react to choosing a new life on Earth and seeing other Gems live their lives. This part is more of how a complete Little Homeworld and new Gem society work on Earth and how Gems can choose their way of life. This will be a pretty light-hearted part to their series.
2) Pink Pearl Returns and Things Get Messy
By far a favorite I cannot wait to happen is the return of Pink Pearl! She has been an alluding character for such a long time, and many have wondered what has happened to her since she was freed from White Diamond’s mind control. We see many clips of Pink Pearl. First off we see a clip of Pink Pearl loving day dreaming with eyes shining happily with a Pink Diamond silhouette in the background. This could tell us she has not gotten over Pink Diamond and in fact may have an unhealthy obsession with an idealized Pink Diamond. She knows the story of Pink Diamond and that she is no longer alive, yet she may be in denial and decided to keep the past memory of Pink Diamond (much like Pearl throughout the series). This leads to the eye cracking scene which is by far the scariest part because how is it possible? Gems are made of light and their bodies are an illusion meaning a crack and one that is expanding is nearly impossible on their physical form. So, we must ask why it is starting to crack. We notice she is smiling while the crack is expanding. This smile is the same one used when she was mind controlled by White Diamond. This could be either out of habit from being controlled for so long or the truth about Pink Diamond/Rose Quartz do not align with her idealized version and the more denial she is in the more the crack grows. Then we have two clips that are interesting: Pearl defending Pink Pearl and Steven covering his ears. These may be happening together. If Steven covers his ears before Pearl defends Pink Pearl, Steven is upset at something and unleashes the powerful yell of Pink Steven causing Pearl to shield Pink Pearl as seen form the direction her eyes are looking down. If Steven is covering his ears after Pearl defends Pink Pearl, that means Steven has done something and will likely feel guilt and anger. This arc will be very important to Steven trying to solve his own issues as Pink Pearl will most likely reject Steven and compare him to Pink Diamond causing the first glimpse of his identity crisis.
3) Famethyst Fun to Serious about Rose Quartz
We get to see the Famethyst again most likely at the zoo! But notice how they go from laughing to serious in a quick second. The Famethyst are usually playful and silly and seeing them become serious means something is up. We also see a glimpse of a Rose Quartz. We are not sure if this Rose Quartz is Pink Diamond or the bubbled Rose Quartzes. But Rebecca Sugar did hint that we will see the bubbled Rose Quartz in “Steven Universe: Future” and notice how this Rose Quartz has a soldier uniform instead of the dress. Upon seeing a Rose Quartz this may bring some serious issues to Steven as it will relate back to his mother.
4) Aquamarine Ruby Fusion is Coming
We have no confirmation that the fusion is Aquamarine and Eyeball Ruby. Both Gems have bad history with Steven. Eyeyball tried to kill Steven in a bubble trapped in space and was an eye witness testifying against Steven’s trial. Aquamarine along with Topaz kidnapped Steven’s friends and used dirty tactics to get Steven to come with her to Homeworld. Both have been thwarted by Steven in the past. They probably fused out of the common hatred they have for Steven and want to exact revenge. However, notice they are inside his house which will cause some trouble. Steven also frantically turns off the Rose Quartz tape inside the house probably to prevent the fusion from seeing it. This will definitely happen in one episode and may not cause too much, but seeing both Gems from his past may trigger something.
5) Jasper is Back!
Jasper is back on Earth and is not happy. She yells, “You are not my Diamond!” referring to Steven. After “Change Your Mind” it seems Jasper did not take the change to well and does not accept Steven’s beliefs of peace. Jasper is very powerful and has experience with strategy and combat. She is going to push Steven to his breaking point and Steven will unleash Pink Steven. It seems anger and violence bring out Pink Steven. Pink Steven form could be activated through negative emotions such as anger, violence, jealousy, and confusion. Pink Steven is powerful and will likely take down Jasper now problem. This is not going to bode well for Steven as he the Pink Steven form will fight aggressively then he usually does, and it’ll cause conflict in his personality.
6) Secret Room only for Diamonds?
One of the most mysterious is this new room at the end of the promo. It turns red but then blue. It is shaped like a giant eyeball and has many appendages sticking out of it. Honestly, it could be anywhere but I am thinking three locations: Homeworld, the Zoo, or Moon Base. If this orb machine is in Homeworld, it could be a Gem processing core or for Homeworld itself. If it’s in the Zoo, it could be an operations system maintaining the Zoo. If it’s in the Moon base, it could be a hidden computer system hiding information. This orb like machine is going to be a big part of the story as it related to Pink Diamond. In another clip, there is a blue panel with the Diamond insignia meaning only a Diamond can access it. Steven does find it and activate the panel. We may get to see new information about Pink Diamond we have not seen before.
7) Steven Witnesses Pink Steven
Lastly and certainly most interesting in the promo is Steven shattering something and realizing his Pink Steven form. This clip is entirely on its own because it could happen at any point. It can happen during the Pink Pearl arc, Jasper arc, blue room, Aqua-Ruby fusion fight, or even outside those arcs. This scene impactful because it parallels to Pink Diamond in “Jungle Moon”. We notice Steven is angry until he is shocked after shattering something. Steven could be shocked at his new form but also about his behavior leading to the action. Pink Diamond did something similar. In “Jungle Moon”, Pink Diamond smashes one of the windows in Yellow’s base after being scolded by Yellow. Seeing himself do the same thing his mother did in the past is going to cause much conflict as he tries not to be like his mother. That scene will also realize something is wrong since Pink Steven is a new power and needs to figure out what to do.
We are going to see much of Steven confronting himself in this series. He may have solved his own identity crisis in “Change Your Mind” but that does not mean something can cause another one. The movie proved that Steven is not done fixing the mess his mother made. But will fixing those problems be too much? How will he confront this with a new power even the Gems don’t know about? In conclusion: we are in for one hell of a ride!

i forgot to keep doing these so here we go:
it’s that daily meme thing. but i’m just going to do the rest at once because, honestly, i’m not gonna remember to do this shit every day.
day 2: a game to make you happy
TRT! which was my answer to the first one (first game played.) and it’s all that nostalgia that makes me really happy.
day 3: favorite music
MHM and SAW are both fantastic. SAW is probably my favorite, MHM is maybe the most effective cause it never lets up with the anxious/scary mood.
day 4: a game for a rainy day
weirdly enough, DDI springs to mind first. probably because it’s nautical/aquatic and has a cozy café in it... though CRY would be great and GTH as well.
day 5: favorite location
wickford castle probably. at least for like, the one i’d want to actually go to the most. but the ryokan hiei as well... i mean it’s fake haunted but looks pretty chill post-haunting.
day 6: favorite phone character
god, all the ones in SSH? i feel like that game had such a vibrant off-screen cast of phone characters. they all had wonderful voice actors.
day 7: favorite boss
i’m not 100% sure what this means because i mean. we’re not talking video game boss here. favorite person that employed nancy? idk. all bosses suck
day 8: game with summer vibes
ASH for sure. sunny hometown vibe with an ice cream shop? very summery. CAR probably has this too but i honestly kinda hate that game
day 9: a puzzle you love
the BULLSHIT hieroglyphic puzzles in TMB. the frame backing puzzle in SAW. clamming in DDI (this isn’t a puzzle, i know, but i love it)
day 10: game you always revisit
TRT, FIN, DOG, CUR, SSH, SHA, MHM
day 11: best storyline
i mean, it’s gotta be CUR. “i’m turning into a werewolf nancy come help” like ok. like hell yeah. lets solve this shit. unbelievable.
day 12: favorite second chance
nancy getting her guts fucking squashed in the elevator in TRT. hands down. nothing else comes close
day 13: best quote
“I may have to cut this short, Hal. Someone just climbed out of my wardrobe.”
day 14: game with best characters
SSH for sure. love em all. they’re such a good clusterfuck and one really ugly tie
day 15: funniest moment
i’m not sure if there are any, like, really genuinely funny moments in these games. i’ll have to come back to it and see if i think of something.
day 16: best game ending
being able to let people burn to death in GTH. metal
day 17: most surprising culprit
i remember being shocked that joseph was the guilty one in FIN when i played it for the first time when i was like 12 or something. overall tho.. i honestly don’t worry too much about who did it lmao. like i don’t super care? weird, i know. but whoever it is i’m like “yeah, okay, that’s fine” and then my life continues as normal. i guess i don’t get super wrapped up in these games
day 18: the easiest game
well, TRT of course. i can finish it in maybe 40 minutes?
day 19: the hardest game
SAW. if there weren’t walkthroughs for the nonograms and big fucking sudokus i would literally still be working on it. and i would never, ever solve any of it.
day 20: best quote
this one seems to be best quote again... so see above
day 21: game with best design
GTH, i think. gothic all the way. (yeah SEA has better graphics but that’s something else)
day 22: most shocking moment
when nikolai or whatever the fuck his name is died
day 23: scariest game
MHM made me cry when i was like 12? GTH jump scared me for sure. SAW has a beautiful tension to it... none of them really scare me anymore though. i am fucking thirty years old, after all
day 24: game with the best food
dear god it’s CUR. absolutely CUR. i, too, long to put some of that turkey in my pocket for later.
day 25: saddest moment
when MID actually did come out
day 26: favorite character arc
brady charmstrong. ok he’s a spineless git but i love him. he just wants his ponytail back!!
day 27: favorite memory playing
when my friend heather and i finally figured out how to get into the library in TRT. fucking massive for both of us. felt like the best, most perfect genius in the world. (it should be noted: i was, like, 10 or 11, and we were playing entirely without hints from online)
runner up is being drunk and switching between lounging, sexting, and playing SAW when i was like, maybe, 24?
day 28: most touching game
no. this is not for me.
day 29: favorite character
professor hotchkiss. turns out i’m a really shitty diet version of her as an adult! wonderful
day 30: favorite game
right now it’s SAW! can’t get enough of that spooky soundtrack
