AH HINNY!

oh man, i oscillate between really liking hinny one day and feeling completely indifferent towards them the next.

hinny might be the relationship i like the most for harry, and it's all because because of the family aspect. through marriage w ginny, harry officially became a weasley family member. and, of course he always was one, but he actually is a weasley on paper and i think having that in writing would mean a lot to harry. and my golden trio heart can't not mention that by hinny being married - ron and hermione are literally harry's brother and sister (in-law) now and !!!!! that just makes my heart melt (i know those two were always harry's family but bc of the aforementioned reason, etc. you get it)

so right off the bat, when i try to organize my more positive thoughts on hinny, i'm mostly focused on how the relationship best serves harry, and only harry. and this is where my frustrations with the ship begins: it's so hard to think the other way around because ginny's narrative purpose is just to be harry's ideal love interest, instead of being a fully fleshed character. i really love ginny with all her spunk and feistiness, but she's so underutilized. she had a cute crush on him in the start of the series which was adorable, but her character was inarguably just "ron's younger sister". and after she gets possessed by volde/gets saved from the CoS by harry, she still continues to have a puppy-love crush on harry until OoTP!!! GAAHHHH!!! Apparently joanne said hinny were always meant to be soulmates and i think if these two had a consistent "invisible string" motif throughout the series, it would've been so good (and almost as good as romione's slow burn). So...

here's how i'd fix hinny (lmao):

i wouldve made the ginny a much more prominent character in PoA and beyond.

we get to see hinny actually have heart-to-hearts about the incidents of CoS - for ginny to play such an IMPORTANT role in the titular plotline of the second book, then to just have her blend into the background afterwards just boggles my mind - that was the perfect oppurtunity to make ginny an invaluable character in the cast. she has this huge experience in common with harry - being personally victimized by voldemort - that harry doesn't have w ron or hermione at that point and it would've been so nice to see harry find an equal, a confidant in ginny from then on - like, dont let the readers forget that harry and ginny have this huge thing in common, have it be with us in the back of our heads the whole time!

start the hinny romance subplot fr fr in GoF

the potential of ginny being a maybe date for harry to the yule ball, harry feeling jealousy towards neville for getting to dance and spend time w ginny and harry being like "wait a minute! i'm supposed to crush on cho! im jealous of neville??" that wouldve been FUN - again, they couldve been a less insane version of romione hello

having the hinny subplot unravel in tandem with harry's crush and relationship with Cho in ootp

in ootp, you can argue that the story attempts to make a foil between cho and ginny's characters but if that were the case, it could've done a way better job of it

with harry's relationship w cho - harry likes her bc she's cool and pretty but she wants to connect with him through their connection via cedric and his death, which is off the bat a hugely touchy/traumatic topic for both of them and cho couldn't possibly fathom what it's like to be in the presence of voldemort/tom but guess which other character does ehehe...

now we're at hbp and this is where the good stuff starts bc if i'd had it my way, we'd have gotten their friendship in poa and two books of solid romantic build-up up until now

i honestly had a such a fun time with hinny in hbp, ginny in her OWL year being so cool and harry's hugeass crush on her- harry being a hormonal teenager was hilarious to read like its implied that harry is having increasingly inappropriate thoughts about her throughout the novel and theyre just intercut with "BUT RON-" that's some good shit

my one gripe w hbp's hinny is that i wish we actually got to see their dates sneaking around hogwarts, finding the perfect hideaways for makeout sessions, etc etc i know hp wasn't a romance fantasy by any means but imagine how swoony it wouldve been if we got to actually see these sunset dates instead of just being told about them - it wouldve been cathartic to actually see harry actually live the life of a normal teen boy before everything fell apart lol

if we got all these invisible string moments between them throughout the series, harry thinking about ginny and how good it felt to kiss her lips before he walks to his death in DH would've felt so much more earned

from a storytelling perspective, the case with hinny begs the question of if you can have a love interest for the jesus figure of your narrative? can you make a believable, grounded and balanced love story for the chosen one? i honestly think so but then you'd have to put equal amounts of effort and work into creating two nuanced characters and unfortunately we don't see that effort be put in ginny's character and that's why harry's endgame falls short for so many people. earlier, i said that this is the ship i like most for harry, but honestly that isn't saying a lot - i think with an almost saint-like character like harry, its hard to imagine a satisfying love and partnership for this kid. i like tomarry as a ship for when im feeling a bit insane but other than that, my main harry ship is him with a lifetime of peace and healing.

i also want to argue that hinny was never meant to be a primary romance in this story - the main romance/love story in the series is ron and hermione's and i think joanne's romance prowess all went into romione and i'm so thankful for that because i think it makes for better story (also i'm totally biased)

i also cant not mention the freudianess of it all with hinny, right? like god freud would Love hinny bc what do you mean they look identical to jily, what is going on here. that and the fact they had their first kid at 22/23 years old like my god, WHAT ARE YOU TWO DOING you should be at the club!!!!! i do dig the failmarriage vibes they were serving in TCC, also.

1. i’ve shipped many ships in many eras and the one i always go back to is ronarry!! they’re so special to me and i know it’s like a popular trope that people find annoying but i really love the bestfriend to lovers trope it’s so sweet :)) and not to mention that they are both in my top 3 😭

2. i definitely read fanfic (i have an ao3 acc 6amflwrr) I’ve been reading it for years 😭😭 ahh this is such a hard one but out of the hundreds of fanfics i’ve read there’s a few that i always think of or go back to:

‘honey honey by aeoneskova’ — marlene lives and takes harry from the dursleys!! harry is in muggle primary school in this and it’s soo realistic !! really sad too harry literally fainted in p.e bc he was so starved ITS SO SAD

‘Hermione Grangers Hogwarts Cranmer for Delinquents on the Run by waspabi’ — i suprisingly loved one sm i went through a phase of hardcore shipping drarry and i met this gem through it!! idk if i ship them anymore but im not like against them either idk anyway this one harry doesn’t know he’s a wizard until they recruit him 💀 and sirius is alive also <3

‘An Hour of Wolves by solvskrift’ — one of the first fics i ever read so that’s probably a reason but this one’s dark and it shows harry’s ptsd really well and also check tags for this one!!

3. oooo i love this question sm i love all dynamics between harry and parental figures bc they’re so interesting but my favourite is sirius and harry by far!! they get each other so well, sirius would do absolutely anything for him and he is the only adult harry fully trusted like harry loved him sm :(( they had their flaws and while i don’t think sirius was the healthiest (something that i don’t blame him for at all i think he did amazingly given the circumstances) he definitely was the best choice and i think that makes it even sadder actually 😭

4. oh i definitely have fics!!! here are some of my favs:

‘perspective by malapropism’ — In which Ron realizes that maybe, just maybe, you aren't supposed to feel this way about your best mate. But only after a dance at the Yule Ball, months of being busy with other things, Cedric Diggory's death, the return of Voldemort, and a quiet knock at his door. (i love this one sm and gof and ootp!rarry is my fav <33)

‘Foolish hearts by iwantacoolassname & orbithastnt’ — this is set in hbp and sirius lives !!!!! the only thing is that it’s ongoing but i don’t think it’s been discontinued :)

‘sacrifice by sim54’ — i love this one sm

‘Somber Skies and Bruised Bodies by ManyGayUmbrellas’ — i love this one too it’s so sad but happy ending!! more of a character study but yeah it’s good :)

‘i’ll hold you when things go wrong by cloudlesslysky’ — Ron has always struggled with insecurity and jealousy since he was a child. However, Ron has grown up. And while he loves his mother, if she's making him choose between her and Harry...Well, Ron knows where he stands. (this is probably my favourite even tho it’s not actually ronarry but they are very close and it’s definitely worth the read and uncle harry & rose AHH)

‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell by IamShadow21’ — one of my favourites too!! this one got me into ronarry in the first place :)

‘merry christmas, war is over by dykesiriusblack’ — wolfstar&ronarry and i loved this one sm!! definitely recommend:))

im literally gonna start ranting about this scene but idc anymore i gotta say it...

Im in love with the duncan harold frenemies dynamic through the book so far. It makes sense from a writing standpoint too, they were both friends with heather, and they started to build a frenemie-ship in action. The pieces all weave together beautifully and the image i was visualising was legitimately beautiful..

Both duncan and harold silently standing infront of heather's door, with both of their carefully chosen out mourning gifts. Duncan's crown piece was something he planned to give to her, while the black rose harold gave symbolises mourning..

And after harold breaks the silence, it's beautiful for the lack of a better word. It's just him talking about their time together, and mentioning how they talked in TDDDDI, and the way harold says it just makes it sounds like he cares for her..

And after that, Duncan's apology is almost heartbreaking in a sense. The way his voice wavers, and the clearing of his throat, it's so perfect.. He wanted to apologize but just.. Couldn't get it out. The clearing his throat at the end just ties the whole thing together in a little bow of awkwardness.

The way his character grows so subtly, too. After Duncan's apology, he apologises for everything he did. From throwing the knife, to just acting like an asshole.

The way Harold is so accepting of this as well makes my heart warm, he's willing to forgive and forget even after everything that had happened to him.. It's so mmmmmmh....

And how the conversation flows so smoothly.. It feels real. Harold talking about his experiences, back when Duncan was bullying him, and the way it helped him see that you can just ignore assholes.

Then Duncan brings up Harold's relationship with LeShawna, in a regular situation, harold would've embarrassedly scolded him, but.. He just rants happily about her. Harold happily ranted about him and LeShawna, and Duncan watched while smiling.

That's all i read so far but u don't get it i HAD to make this appreciation post.

so i guess I'm doing this again.

this is more of a repeat of everything I said in part one but with more sobbing and coherent words.

Jade Leech, Octavinelle's vice dorm leader and the twin brother of Floyd. Many might say that Jade is better than Floyd, although that may seem true to people who don't know him well enough, some people were smart enough to know that Jade was just as bad.

Despite being so fucking shady and nasty, I couldn't help but slowly learn how to love his character. His shadiness is only a part of his charm ❤️ I mean— don't you want that? Don't you just want to look at him and wonder what the fuck is going through his mind right now?

He could be either plotting murder or thinking about tonight's dinner and I would still find his shady expression 🥺 oddly attractive to say the least. I'm being weirdly serious here and typing in lowercase so in a few bullets, expect me to go feral once again.

His eyes are gorgeous. I don't know about you but I get mesmerized everytime I look at them, I swear I could drown in them and never want air ever again. His mismatched eyes,, absolutely beautiful sir please shock my heart eheheh 👉👈 haha jk !!! he doesn't have to use his unique magic to shock my heart bfjfkfjfkfjkffk

His smile is breathtaking, my sun— my light in this dark world of mine. Even if his smile is practiced and insincere, I can't help but go crazy over it. It's such a shame that his gloves cover up its blinding beauty- though my eyes can see through the deceit, I know that his fingers are glorious beneath that piece of cloth. My one and only wish in life is to be able to hold his hand- without the gloves, and that's all for my confession.

His extreme love for mushrooms is probably his comic relief so it doesn't completely make him seem like a shady bitch in the game- it's a surprise as to how cute and vulnerable he can get when he talks about or does something related to his precious fungi. It even goes as far as to make him completely lose his sense of surroundings, which is really rare for someone as observant as him- and usually dangerous sjfbjdbf. It's also EXTREMELY CUTE as to how they made Jade someone who really likes mountains- he even goes as far as to found his own club to appreciate them!!

He has pretty deft hands, being able to create a terrarium and care for it as a hobby is applaudable- not everyone has the ability to do just that, you'd have to be able to be extremely precise and careful, and add a little bit of extreme determination to the mix. He would probably smell like mud from all the time he spends in the greenhouse, and stays up late because of creating terrariums. It shows us that he isn't completely a shitty eel who collects dirt on people as his job and I think that's pretty fucking cute not gonna lie!

There was one voice line of him mentioning that he likes gazing at stars, which was completely unexpected for me! He didn't seem like the type to gaze up at the stars and just- watch! Though I expect him to be always alone whenever he does that- he isn't exactly the most approachable person in NRC, people tend to avoid the Leech twins because of Floyd- mostly. People are just scared of them and I don't think Jade has any friends aside from Azul and Floyd. And I don't think either of them would be willing to stay with him to do just that, Floyd's excuse would be because "it's boring~!" and Azul's would be "I have much more important things to do." And I think that's pretty fucking sad.

i actually really like Slytherins and don’t get the hate, hear me out (im a Gryffindor by the way). everyone is always like “oh my god but what about the fact that Salazar Slytherin had that secret layer, he didn’t trust anyone, he was a blood suprematist, and blah blah blah.”

ok but that was fucking smart tho....

First of all: i would like to have a serious conversation with you about getting a therapist if you hate him because he has a secret layer. secret layers are awesome. i would love to have a layer. if someone takes me to a layer, i would love them forever. please give me a layer.

Secondly: every group breaks apart over disagreements at least once, and most of the time permanently or for a long ass time. it makes sense that he wasn’t exactly certain that it would work out. even some of the groups that were really strong together broke up. for example:

The Marauders

The Prank: Sirius basically used Remus as a murder weapon. Snape is only alive because James got there in time to stop any permanent harm from happening. (we don’t mention The Prank here... this is purely for educational purposes... shhhhhhh)

The Betrayal: Peter sold out James to Voldemort, framed Sirius for it, and then faked his own death, framing Sirius for twelve (12) more murders in the process. (i mean its honestly impressive at this point like holy shit everyone thought this dude was useless.)

The Golden Trio-

The GoF fights: Ron thinking Harry didn’t trust him because he didn’t say anything when he “was planning to be a Champion”. Hermione being forced into a situation where her friendship is being abused, before lashing out and not talking to either of them. Ron getting jealous over Krum and Hermione (it was both. fight me.), causing him to unfairly lash out against Hermione. (the hormones in this movie really said why hello there)

The DH fight: Ron straight up skipped out on them while they were on the run and only came back thanks to the deluminator.

this is gonna be jumping from different parts of the book to another because i cant process anything properly

1. ALRIGHT so CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT i couldnt like nesta i tried so hard but towards the end i started loving her and her and cassian are so cute AND WHEN SHE KILLED HYBERN YES YES YES

2. i used to be a giant moriel shipper before but after acowar omg omg omg azriel and elain are so CUTE AND SOFT THEY DESERVE EACH OTHER i was sad when elain and lucien were closer in the end i hope something happens or azriel finds someone he deserves to be happy

3. i was really scared about how sjm was gonna portray mor’s sexuality but i think she did pretty well??? i guess it might seem like internalized homophobia or something to other people but the family thing backed it up p well for me THOUGH I think mor could have gotten better everything she was kinda put to the side in this book which sucks because she's SO POWERFUL and I would have loved to see that

4. uh… can we talk about page 666 where rhys “died”? because i literally put the book down for half an hour because i was CRYING oh my gof i have never cried that much

5. THE WAR SCENE omg that first part was so cool with the bone carver and the weaver and bryaxis THEN hybern did the cauldron thingy and i was shook but then i freaked out even more when miryam and drakon came holy shit i was a MESS

6. the high lords alliance omg that was GREAT

7. I LOVED IT SO MUCH AND THE AMREN THING WHERE SHE KILLED EVERYONE WOAH WOAH WOAH

8. I love how this book had SO MUCH AZRIEL I LOVE HIM SO MUCH MYBABY

9. FEYRE AS HIGH LADY HOLY SHITTTTT NO WORDS I HAVE NO WORDS her and rhys are so fit for each other I love them

10. tamlin... though I wished he was killed in this book at first and I was TEARING UP with tears of rage during that high lord meeting scene, I think he still has a chance for redemption???? wouldn't like his character but at least to me he isn't pure evil anymore

11. LUCIEN omg I was so happy helot some screen time but sum like... pushed him to the side after he left to find the queen but alright I'll take it we’ll probably get more in the next book

12. BITCH THE SURIELS DEATH GOT ME CRYING HARD THAT WAS SO SAD
