#it just doesn't feel appropriate
A LOT of Headcanons about Piranesi coming back into the real world:
For once an adaptationless book I'm Unhealthy about actually has a decent sized following and I can talk about it without screaming into the void of obscurity, so I'm gonna take mad advantage of that and spew out all the Thoughts I had into one post. Yay!
One of the first things he learns to do is cook properly (re: stuff that isn't seaweed and fish) and throws himself into it 100%
Was never much of a cook before but since he was kind of forced to learn in order to survive he's eager to branch out
Remembers his mother making Ghanaian food for he and his sisters when they were kids so he tries to learn some of those dishes
And the first time he makes one for his mom she cries
Actually it's hard for her to look at him at all without crying
He sort of understands why on an intellectual level, but still feels so disconnected from everything that it confuses and alarms him
His dad isn't quite sure what to do with him
Tries to bond in a dad kind of way and he latches on pretty quick to any kind of intellectual discussion but always feels like he makes his dad a little sad
In general he wants to connect with his family but can't help noticing the sad/concerned/disturbed energy they feel when they're around him
And again he understands why, but just can't bring himself to feel the same. They're new people! A whole family he forgot he had! Isn't that exciting and good and why do they look at him funny???
On the other hand, when he first sees them again. He does in fact cry, quite a bit, and tries to reason with himself that it's Matthew crying and not him, but then again maybe it is him because he simply doesn't know what else to do
There's just a lot of tears from all five of them in the first little while
His older sister is soooo protective over him. That's her little baby brother and now he's back after she'd been certain he was dead and she really takes him under her wing
(It's probably her who shows him how to make her favourite recipes)
Younger sister was fresh out of high school when he first disappeared and feels like he's missed out on a good chunk of her life so she throws herself into trying to fill in the gaps for him
Overall I think she'd handle everything the best, it's still confusing and hard but she manages to keep up her spirits by showing him all the cool stuff he's forgotten about in the world, they go on a lot of little adventures together
He struggles with not being able to talk about The House though. He knows it's important that he keep up the pretense that he'd been kidnapped and has amnesia etc. etc., but he wants to tell his family about The House. He wants them to see what he saw and loved for so long even if it turned out to be terrible, and it's so hard
Tries out a few different names. His family just calls him Matthew and he's okay with that, he's not really sure what else to call himself for now but would kind of like something different
Raphael is the highest recipient of this. Almost every time he sees her he's got a new name that he shyly asks if she can call him just to see how it sounds
She is very patient with this, but also sometimes forgets which name he's decided on for the week
Generally he latches onto her very hard and politely but firmly insists they stay friends
Obviously she's quite a busy person, but she makes time to see him and check on how he's doing whenever she can
They also go on adventures (as he calls them)
She takes him to the coasts, and he spends hours wandering the most desolate seeming beaches, taking detailed notes on how they differ from each other, and trying to feed the birds
Is delighted when a seagull steals his sandwich one day
Is very very open about how much he loves Raphael, and the first time he says that to her she's surprised and alarmed to say the least
for completely arbitrary reasons I hc her as being a) a lesbian and b)very much not looking for a relationship. So at first this worries her.
...But it soon becomes clear that he loves a lot of things and people. He loves his family and the birds and the buildings and the crossing guard and the buses and the trees -- and on top of that the thought of romance specifically isn't something he ever fully considers or understand
An ace king, basically
Anyway, they're besties
Dreams about The House frequently, and often so vividly he wakes up thinking he's still there
He wouldn't call them nightmares, but they aren't always nice either
Tries to draw it from memory but can never quite capture it right
Loves birdwatching
And collecting shells
His sister convinces him to get his ears pierced after a while - initially he's skeptical but then remembers this means he has all the more options for decorating himself with odd things he finds and that makes him happy
In general his clothing style gets a little more mainstream over time, but never goes back to what you'd call exactly normal
Knits
Gives people little things he makes or finds, even just strangers he sees frequently or look like they need a friend
Related: is still a bit shy around large groups, but will talk to anyone who looks lonely or lost, even if he has no idea who they are
Anyway I'm having major feelings about this book and am so obsessed with the main character's entire vibe, screaming crying and throwing up etc. etc. so here's my love letter to the implications of the book's ending hope you like it

i'm aware that due to luffy's more cheerful personality and looks, a lot of people might find it weird to picture him in sexual situations. especially since most of us see him as aroace (as if aroace people couldn't have sex or be in love but, y'know, that's for another time) and it's completely understandable to not feel comfortable around sexual stuff if you don't like it with this specific character. however, being uncomfortable around that type of content and infantilizing luffy's character to the point that you consider it problematic or wrong to put him in romantic/sexual situations is too much and you should let people enjoy characters however the fuck they want. if you don't like something just scroll and ignore it, but don't try to make everyone follow your own moral compass and likes because we're all different and luffy is just a fictional character.
people often forget he's the captain of a pirate crew. he's mature and has critical thinking and if seeing a cheerful/cute character instantly makes you assume he deserves to be "protected" from sex/romance, you are: infantilizing his personality (that may or may not be neurodivergent coded, but that's another story), villainizing sex and romance instead of just seeing those as something you don't personally enjoy but should let other people consume, and using being aroace as a shield from the real world and a stereotype instead of actually being inclusive and truly seeing him as aroaspec. friendly reminder that aroaspec people can have sex and be in romantic relationships because it's a spectrum. that's the whole thing about it. it's understandable to not be comfortable around sexual situations with a character you don't perceive as sexually active, but that doesn't mean it's wrong to write him that way. let people do whatever they want with their idea of luffy and have fun!

peter bringing mayday with him to do spider stuff because yeah, he had things to live for before--but now he has a child and he is going to raise this child and be there for her and maybe if she’s there, strapped to his chest, he’ll be more careful. he’ll consider his life almost as precious as hers. maybe bringing mayday to work is a precaution.

The idea that Black people are predisposed to hating queer people is Anti-Black rascism. The people most hurt by these assertions are not only Black people but queer Black people as well. You are not saving queer people by throwing Black people under the bus, and you'll never save queers by doing that, so just stop.

about your last post: I totally understand where you’re coming from. I’m a Coast Salish artist and have published some art for my tribe but I’m terrified of posting it online for these reasons. I’ve considered a side blog but I’m not sure if it’s worth it :(
I wish I could give some sort of reassurance or advice or hypothetical way of handling it that i'm trying out that might help, but the truth is that I'm just as torn as you are on the subject of sharing traditional art and culture to a broad audience who might or might not respect and appreciate my culture ;o; I don't *want* to have to not share my artwork, but the way the internet is sometimes, it feels like it's better to only share my art amongst close friends/family members because there are so many non-native ppl out there who will do and say hurtful things because they cannot comprehend boundaries and respect for a protected culture that the government and churches and general public wanted to pick apart like carrion while hoping that the people that belonged to it would vanish and meld into society quietly.

Hi! I was wondering what other vld ships you like/ship? If you don’t mind me asking
Though it's been a hot minute since I've really indulged in vld outside of working on LB, I'm one of those multishippers who can be persuaded on mostly anything so long as the narrative is compelling enough (particularly so far as Keith is involved)! My staples tend to be keitor (obviously) & sheith, but I have a fondness for fics that explore keith/kuron, keith/james, keith/regris, keith/allura, keith/matt in an interesting manner, and I've even read a few solid pieces featuring keith/lance, keith/kolivan, and (most surprisingly of all) keith/zarkon.
So far as non-keith-centric ships are concerned, I'm far choosier, but lotura is always a heartbreaker, ezor/zethird is cute but seldom written (bonus points if axca is their fwb third), shiro/ulaz lends itself to a tender sort of angst, and zarkon/honerva is just outright sad.
I can also go for all the above in a non-romantic sense, of course, but my major platonic dynamics are Pidge & mostly everyone, Keith & the entire BoM, and Lotor & the galra girl squad.
Less so than the ships themselves, it's actually the manner in which any given dynamic is written that sees me become particular: the portrayal of the characters, their mannerisms, their interactions with one another, the circumstances in which they've come together, etc etc... but if you have any fics that you would absolutely swear by—whether they feature a ship listed here or not—then by all means send them my way!

I've probably talked about this before, but man, when we're talking about the dangers of mandating trans people go to the "correct sexed" spaces, that isn't the time to bring up passing trans people and say how weird it'll be to see a man in the women's restroom or vice versa, or whatever other example there is.
It still puts trans people in danger whether or not they pass, or if they "look" like they don't belong in a space. Who do you think is most in danger of these mandates? Because cis people will (generally, not always, obviously) be fine, if anything, it will be trans people who are affected, and those assumed trans.

Because I keep questioning my own writing a lot; especially in terms of ending a short story... sometimes, it really is easier to just treat what you write like a movie or a TV show you're watching. Especially if it's a short fic that is basically just a single scene. Like... Would there be a scene change now and it'd feel complete? If yes, then it's an appropriate ending. If no, then either you write one more paragraph or let it rest for a bit, come back to it, and see how you feel. Or you find a spot a little earlier because sometimes scenes can drag on for too long and need to be cut shorter in order to be satisfying and make sense.
