ᥫ᭡ little romantic gestures ; trying to cook their favorite dish + pulling them in the warmest hugs

"reggie is something burning?" you ask. dropping your bag on the couch, you made your way into the shared tiny kitchen in the apartment that you, reggie, alex, and luke shared. seeing that the only pair of shoes on the living room carpet were reggie's, you assumed luke and alex were at work.

"no!! everything's fine," he yells.

"see, when you say 'everything's fine' its not reassuring." reggie stands in the middle of the kitchen holding a smoking pot, a panicked expression on his face.

"heyyyy." he drags out the word. "how are youuuuu?" he quickly tosses the contents of the pot into the sink. immediately making your way over to the sink, you peer in.

reggie picks you up by the waist and lifts you up into the air and away from the sink.

"how the hell do you burn spaghetti?" you laugh. reggie puts you down and smiles awkwardly.

"i was trying to make your favorite," he offers, pointing to the canned sauce on the scratched counter.

"why?" you ask. reggie cannot cook for the life of him. alex literally put up a sign (a sticky note on the fridge) saying he wasn't allowed to do anything more than microwave leftovers.

"i... have a favor to ask you," he starts. you groan and roll your eyes.

"this can't be good."

"no, no i swear it's not as bad as you think. its like super simple, please," he says.

"can't you ask luke or alex?" you say, going to the dishwasher to grab a (probably) clean glass. you fill it u with water as reggie follows you around the small space like a puppy dog.

"no. it has to be you," he deadpans. you turn and lift the now-full glass to your lips, gesturing for him to get on with it. "ineedyoutopretendtobemygirlfriendfortheweekendprettyprettyplease," he blurts out, face turning scarlet.

"hold on. say that all again, slowly." you finish off your glass and put it into the sink, next to the blackened spaghetti strands.

"i need you to.. pretend. to, uh, be my girlfriend?" upon seeing your expression, reggie adds, "just for the weekend! please! bobby's been on my ass about not having one and i really just wanna wipe that smirk off his fake-vegetarian fa—"

you cut him off. "sure."

"sure?" his face splits into the widest grin. he grabs you by the shoulders and pulls you into the warmest hug you've ever received, even surpassing the one alex gave you when he had the flu and a fever higher than everest. "you're seriously the best, y/n."

"hey, hey! only for the weekend!" you laugh into his worn flannel as he lifts you off your feet and spins you around.

"i love you! you're amazing," he says, putting you down and running out of the room, the biggest smile on his adorable face.

you look down at the burnt spaghetti in the sink. "i love you too, reg," you murmur.

Stand Tall Ramble

Ok so Stand Tall gives me BIG emotions.

( the colors are significant in some places, ( but you could understand the post without them. I think it’s obvious where they’re significant, but most of the time the purple is just to show that it’s lyrics. Every so often purple just means Julie specifically, blue for Luke, pink for Alex and red for Reggie, but if you’re not sure assume purple means lyrics)

The first thing that always gets me is Julie going on alone, still teary, voice a little shaky for a measure or two but she still goes out and pours her whole heart onto that stage.

Don’t blink. No, I don’t wanna miss it

Everything has just happened so fast. She lost her mom, she lost her passion for music for a while and then all of a sudden there’s three new important and confusing people in her life. Her friendships have changed, her crushes have changed, her whole world has flipped on its head. Suddenly her music is back too.

One thing and it’s back to the beginning.

Just as quickly as she gets the boys she’s thinks she’s lost them

Cause everything is rushing in fast

And it’s one, two, three, four times

She wrote this song with the boys. This line is showing how important each member of the band is to everyone else. I would have looked to each of the boys as I counted if I were singing this song and it had gone as planned.

This is a decision to keep going, keep fighting. With or without the boys. FOR the boys.

There’s a switch in her voice here, a sudden power. She is the last standing now, but she’s not going to let anything stop her. She knows the boys wouldn’t have let her and neither would her mom.

As someone who has sang and played music my entire life I can tell you that there is an emotion and a physical feeling that I can not possibly describe to you that comes with preforming.

Whatever happens even if I’m the last standing

There the feeling really hits her when she gets the reaction. She realizes that maybe she can do this.

And then Alex appears…

There’s a look in Alex’s eyes of, “ we would not have left you again.” A little smile of “ I’ve got you, just keep going”

Julie’s eyes LIGHT UP with pure unbridled hope. The tears come back in an instant because she could have done it alone, but she doesn’t have to.

And then Reggie appears too, she doesn’t have time to really react but she actually giggles a little, and the tears get bigger. Reg gives her this little smirk and he nods like, “ you’ve got it, we’ve got you. Just sing”

Right now I’m loving every minute

This song was written before but this line has a whole different feeling now than it was intended to. Originally this was, I’ve found my people, I’m back, they’re back and we’re going to take over the world. Now it’s a big feeling of, WE CAN DO THIS.

Julie looks to Alex and Reggie here as Luke flickers and there’s fear in everyone’s eyes but still blinding hope in Julie’s

Luke makes it here and it’s perfect and the look in everyone’s eyes is enough to send me into a fresh wave of tears

Self explanatory

The oos make me giggle so much, it’s adorable and Reggie and Julie’s friendship could be a whole other giant post. Plus musically it gets me all jittery because it’s just so good.

Never look back

Alex’s chorus means a lot to me because he just stand up and does it without a second thought and I love the idea that this is him finally listening to Reggie the beginning “ can you just own your awesomeness for once?”

Reg takes his moment and there’s something about his power note there with the stand tall building with everyone there that really gets me worked up

And the final chorus with just everyone’s voices means a lot because they don’t need their instruments to be the band. They’re just themselves in that moment and its so powerful

Everyone’s faces as they’re taking in what they’ve just done is so wonderful and the way they all look at each other is so sweet

Alex grabbing Luke’s hand HURTS

Because there are so many ways it could be: 1. They’re celebrating, this is a Luke we did it

2. The way Luke doesn’t hesitate to take it tells me he may have done this before and this is simply Alex showing his excitement ( I could give a whole rant about these two too)

3. Anxiety

4. Adrenaline

5. ( you’re getting a ramble on fear responses wether you want it or not) but Alex’s automatic fear response almost every time we see him scared ( which is often) is to reach for Luke

And the two most heartbreaking options

6. Alex isn’t sure Luke is stable enough not to flicker before they can poof out after bows so he’s trying to tether him

And then the bows and the boys disappear like they always do and Julie knows it’s different but she’s still glowing with the excitement and power of their performance that she’s blissfully oblivious to what it really meant for the boys this time and I SOB THROUGH STAND TALL JUST AS HARD AS UNSAID EMILY EVERY SINGLE TIME for these reason.

so you know how throughout the show reggie is perfectly content with hanging out with ray even though he can’t see or hear anything the ghost does right? imagine that’s because that’s just how it’s always been for reggie back when he was alive. his relationship with his parents wasn’t the best (as so eloquently stated by luke in a singular line) but I assume he kind of,,,created this illusion? that he was happy, that they loved him and each other. but his efforts always end up being one sided, and I can see him actively denying to the band that anything was wrong bc hey it’s fine we hang out and have fun, but it’s just him having conversations with himself and his parents not really acknowledging him. and so he spends time with ray the same way he spends time with his parents, and thinks hey, this is pretty nice.

and now think about reggie post-caleb, visible and audible and human, coming back to hang out with ray as he usually does, except this time ray looks up and him and smiles. asks him how he’s doing, about their band practice and whether he’s had any issues with being able to eat again. and reggie just. breaks. because this is everything he’s ever wanted and more.

TW: mentions of death and stuff but it’s not too morbid/detailed, but like dead bodies are mentioned.

What happens when Emily and Mitch eventually find Julie’s YouTube or smth. Like. They just see their dead son. Singing with the girl who gave his song to them a few weeks back. And they’re in the place he ran away to. And he’s just right there.

What would they do?

I think they’d be amazed and devastated and a little angry, cos the natural assumption (especially with him being at the house he literally ran away to) would be that he never left, his spirit just went to - what they would assume is - the only place he ever felt truly at home.

If that were me, I’d feel pretty horrible/angry that he never came to visit or give me a sign that he was (kind of) okay, and he just fully ignored me. And I know he didn’t actually ignore them, he just wasn’t around at al for 25 years, but they wouldn’t know that and I wish we could have a season 2 for them to explore the angst and feels and stuff around that situation.

Adding on to that, possibly the way that they’d find out is through Bobby. He’d see they’re all somehow still alive in a way, and he’d tell anyone he could that would listen to him. Including the devastated parents of the kids he was in a band with.

I’d also just like to add here that Bobby would’ve been pretty gosh darn traumatised by the events. Like any normal person who’s in a band with three of their closest friends and then they find out all three of them literally died and now they’re completely alone? They’d be pretty traumatised. He mentions to Carrie at one point “I’m gonna go see my therapist”, and it makes sense that he’d have a therapist, cos three of his friends literally died when they were all teenagers.

I also think that Bobby would’ve been one of the first people to discover they’re dead. Like either it would be those random people in the background at the start, or the hot dog vendor guy, who would realise these kids are dying and call the ambulance, in which case Bobby probably wouldn’t be notified (cos he wasn’t with them at all) until he’d come outside eventually to tell them they’re on in five or smth and either find no one there at all, or find an ambulance speeding away, or see a bunch of paramedics lifting his friends’ bodies into an ambulance. Orrr he would go outside to find them, and then he himself - a flipping 16-18 year old, a literal teenager, minor, child - sees them asleep and tries to wake them up and nothing happens and he checks their pulses and fear grips his chest and he grabs out his phone (under the assumption that the garage/house is his family’s, and it’s a really nice house, so the conclusion there is that is his family is pretty rich, so I’d assume he’d have a phone with him) and calls emergency services, and that’s the last time he ever sees his friends.

And then the guys go and haunt him, and he’s probably already been haunted by memories and the thought of their still, lifeless bodies, without the help of actually being genuinely haunted.

And yeah, it was rly messed up that he stole their songs and gave no credit - or even mentioned them to Julie or rose or even Carrie. But also the guys doing that is messed up. It’s no wonder he never gave them credit or mentioned them to anyone, cos doing that would presumably awaken bad memories inside him, which he very much would not want. Poor guy is bloody traumatised. And carrie basically not reacting at all to her dad going to see his therapist implies that he sees his therapist a lot, probably frequently like once a week, so not only is he traumatised but he’s getting constant therapy for it and still needs more. And yeah, it’s possible those are just regular checkups cos everyone should get therapy whether they’re in a bad place or not, but the fact that he was clearly verbally and visibly distressed, and Carrie still doesn’t react, implies that he might have episodes a lot where he remembers the guys or thinks about them or whatever.

AND ALSO HE DOES MEDITATION, which could be a coping technique from his therapist, or a way for him to clear his mind and thoughts.

Whatever happened right after the guys died, whoever it was to find their bodies, it would be bloody traumatising for a group of four to suddenly be a group of one. He’d need extensive therapy and help for that, he’d be very much not okay, anyone in his shoes would be very much not okay.

He might’ve contacted his friends’ families immediately, to tell them what happened, cos the guys didn’t like their parents at all. Reggie’s we’re right about to divorce. Luke’s didn’t want him in the band. Alex’s were homophobic. They all probably escaped from all of that every single day by going to Bobby’s house, to the one place where they could all be themselves without hate. So not only would it be horrifying to have a suddenly empty garage every day, for your friends to no longer be there, to know that they’ll never come back, Bobby would also probably have possessions from all of them, and no one other than Bobby would be able to give those to their families. Not only that, they probably wouldn’t even know for a while, because of how much their kids hated them. It’s possible they didn’t know for literally days, and they just assumed that their kids were staying overnight at Bobby’s. They wouldn’t think to contact their kids, or their kids’ friends and friends’ families, they’d just assume they’re okay. It was probably Bobby who had to break the news to all of them. So there’s some extra trauma and horrible-feelings piled on top of that. And he’d break the news to them as well as probably give them some things to remind their parents of their kids or something. Imagine an entire fic or episode or something based on Bobby’s experiences after the guys died.

He’d go to Reggie’s place, interrupting a fight between his parents. He’d tell them their son is dead. He’d give them Reggie’s favourite pick or something. Reggie may be a mess, but something tells me he doesn’t leave his stuff lying around, like both physical objects and real things. He probably always thought he could just internalise it all, make it into jokes, not go into detail about how much his parents’ fights affect him and how scary it is, how he has to shield his younger siblings when he’s at home, to try and keep them safe and happy. Same with physical things: he would seem like the kind of person to forget to clean up after himself, who would leave it all lying around. But he keeps it clean, cos if he can’t clean out his mind and his own house, can’t get rid of the fighting, he might as well get rid of the things he could, take control of what he could. So he probably wouldn’t leave much lying around the garage, wouldn’t even own that much stuff to leave around the garage. He’d give it to Reggie’s parents and they would fight more, saying that it’s his fault Reggie died no it’s her fault and the other kids would cowed behind a corner and Bobby would hug the kids, try to protect them how Reggie used to, but knowing there’s no use.

He’d go to Luke’s house, tell them their son is dead. They’d cry, they’d scream. Emily would be sure it’s her fault. Mitch would break down and fall to his knees. Bobby would stand there, unsure what to do.

He’d go to Alex’s house. He’d hesitate at the door, not wanting to interact with these horrible people. Then he’d knock. He’d tell them the horrible news. He’d say he’s sorry. He’d say he wishes Alex could still be alive. Alex’s dad would stare at him menacingly. Alex’s dad would say “serves him right, doing the devils work”. Bobby would fill with anger. Alex’s mum would say “I’d feel sorry if he could’ve brought us a girlfriend rather than that boy. And a rebellious boy at that, he ran away from home to be in your little band.” Bobby would crack, the rage spilling over. He’d yell at them, scream at them, say they’re horrible parents, they didn’t deserve a beautiful amazing child like alex, that it wasn’t his choice, that they should be at least a little bit sad that their only child is gone, that someone they raised is gone from the world and he was only 17, that they could’ve had an ounce of respect or kindness in them to make alex actually feel like a person. He’d take a small pride flag out of his pocket, the one Alex left behind, shove it in their faces and say that everyone is a person. He’d storm away, going back to his home. He’d hang up the pride flag in his room, bright, proud, loud. He’d fall to the floor, crying, lost, terrified. He’d be horrified that someone can hate another person because of who they love, even when that person is their child, the literal result of their love, and they hate him because of love. He’d reflect on hate and love, two very different but very similar things, how they intertwine with one another, like some messed up but beautiful and entrancing dance.

My favourite performer in each JATP Band Song

I'm just going to be going for the Sunset Curve and Julie and The Phantoms songs actually performed as a band, so unfortunately Perfect Harmony and Unsaid Emily won't be included

I wrote a lot more than expected so under the read more it goes

Now Or Never

Luke takes it home for the first one, maybe it's the sleeveless shirt, maybe it's how he so effortlessly flings his guitar around, but also how bouncy he is throughout the whole song I just know this was one of his favourite songs he had ever written. (Need to note that Reggie is a very close second here because of his 'tooDAYY' and pushing his hair back)

This Band Is Back

Alex 'Come on Reginald' Mercer, my guy was dedicated to becoming a drum for this song just to cheer his buddy up, and he kept rhythm no matter what position he was in, plus he's cute in his shorts. I also do love that it's a Reggie song and I stick to the belief that Reggie wrote it after Luke and Bobby had a minor argument.

Bright

Julie. Her finally getting the courage to not only sing but to sing in front of her school? The little laugh when the phantoms appear?!?!?! THE PRIDE WHEN SHE NOTICES THEY CAN SEE THEM?!?? THE WAY SHE OWNS THE STAGE AND JUST HAS A COMPLETE PERSONALITY CHANGE?!?!? GO JULIE GO!!!! I have to add, most shows with bands would really focus on just the love interests in the band having moments on stage, but every JATP performance is so real and just a group of friends hyping each other up and I love that. OH and the way she lip syncs when Luke's singing into her mic?! Love love LOVE it.

Flying Solo

Julie again, okay the last one I said how Julie pays attention to the whole band but I love how in this one she literally does not spend one second not focusing on Flynn. The way she proudly introduces Flynn to each of the ghosts throughout the song? Ahhhh!! She's gotten so confident after Bright and this shows it. Oh also when Julie and Flynn dancing? (It's something they picked up from dance class 100%)

Finally Free

First of all, a shout out to Reggie's vest. But of course the queen reigns once again, this song is super Julie centric and she's so powerful throughout the whole thing? Like, she singlehandedly made Luke realise he was into her just with this performance alone? Julie Molina was destined to be a star, GOD her voice in this song?! Perfect, perfection, mwah mwah mwah! (Also Alex and Reggie noticing Julie and Luke in that moment? What a time to be not alive)

Edge of Great

Julie and Luke?? There's no way I can split the choice here, how Julie is actively trying to avoid looking at Luke, Luke's confusion but he just carries on until he knows he can get her attention? Julie on the piano, Luke's guitar riffs. Also easily one of my favourite costume moments of the show? The butterfly shirt is something I could write a million words about, because much like a butterfly Julie has really really come out of her cacoon by now. Also we all know the moment at the end has to mentioned, because like come on, even Nick knew Julie was into Luke because of that.

Stand Tall

Right, straight off the bat I can tell you Reggie actually always takes over as my favourite phantom whenever I'm rewatching this performance. His performance is fully next level in this one, the smirk when he manages to appear on stage, the way he goes to the front of the stage with Julie and flicks his bass, when they go back to back to sing?!??!?! Reggie was a totally brand new performer for Stand Tall and he always stands out to me. But also I can't talk about Stand Tall and NOT mention everyone? Alex being the first one to get back on the stage is amazing, because you know he probably had an overwhelming amount of anxiety about it but once he's there he's so relieved. The moment where he stands up and sings? Beautiful. Luke fighting as hard as he can to be in the performance even if it causes him pain. The flawless harmonies he produces even after the stress of getting back to her. JULIE?! JULIE BEING ABLE TO GET BACK ON THAT STAGE THINKING SHE WOULDN'T PERFORM WITH HER BOYS, THINKING SHE WOULD JUST BE SINGING ALONE, BUT DOING IT FOR THEM AND FOR HER MOTHER?!?!? SHOUT OUT TO JULIE MOLINA BECAUSE THAT WAS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL MOMENT AND REALLY SHOWED HER GROWTH IN CONFIDENCE!!!

If you don't mind me sending another one, JatP flight crew AU?

-Alex and Luke are the pilots. Luke has been banned from going on comms several times because he keeps singing. "I told them 'this is your captain singing', so it's fine!" It is not, stop that Luke.

-Willie and Reggie work as stewards. Willie is the one who does the safety brief and makes jokes like 'if you try to make a phone call while we're in the air, we're going to ask you to step outside'.

-Reggie is the one who looks after any unaccompanied minors, because he's great with kids.

-Willie is the one who keeps an eye out for people freaking out and tells them all about his boyfriend who is also scared of planes but got over it with statistics about how you're more likely to die by cow or toaster.

-Not everyone appreciates Willie's Death Statistics, that's usually when Reggie swoops in.

-Alex: Stop telling people I'm scared of flying.

(He is still a liiiittle scared of flying unless he's the one flying the plane.)

-Luke is the only person on the crew who actually likes airplane food.

-There has been at least one time, possibly while Alex and Willie weren't working but both on a flight back home, that they uhhh, joined the mile high club. The flight was nearly empty okay and it wasn't like they used the cockpit.

-Julie is an up and coming celebrity who refuses to go the whole Private Jet route because it would make Carlos judge her and she's seen how ruthless his memes can be. (Also he has like 25 years of backlogged blackmail material.) She still feels a little over the top just flying first class, but the label is paying, soooo...

-The big fashionable sunglasses Flynn bought her, and the fact that she usually just throws her hair in a bun and wears Un-Celebrity Clothes keep her incognito most of the time.

-Reggie compliments her on her smiley sweatshirt the first time she flies with their airline, and they kind of flirt back and forth a little.

-Willie totally knows who Julie is and thinks Reggie does too.

-When the plane hits some turbulence, Willie's You're More Likely To Die Crossing The Street speech is not working for Julie so she tries humming instead, and Reggie shoos Willie to terrorise the Karens in the back who think now is the best time to walk around.

-He sits with Julie and is like: Hey I know that song! And quietly sings to her.

-He has no idea that it's Julie's own song, and she kind of loves him, and they duet until the turbulence has subsided.

-Reggie still has no clue until Alex sends him a YOU'RE VIRAL ON TIKTOK!!!1!!! video. Because 'hot flight attendant duets with pop star' is apparently excellent clickbait.

-Reggie asks if he can have his name tag changed to Hot Flight Attendant. Their boss says no. Willie goes out and gets two patches made anyway to wear off the job.

-"Yes of course I've got one for me too, have you seen me, Reginald?"

-Luke has never been more jealous. Especially because he KNOWS who Julie is an loves her lyrics and stuff.

-The next time Julie flies with them Reggie is all shy like: sorry, I didn't know who you were, but our pilot basically threw a jealous fit, I'm sorry if I've been bothering you, it's not because you're famous it's just that you're really cute and oh god I'll stop talking now.

-Julie is of course delighted and suggests that they all go to karaoke together some time. And maybe beforehand, she and Reggie can go grab a bite to eat somewhere.

-Willie after the plane is empty, over the intercom: attention all flight crew, Reggie somehow managed to get us a karaoke night with Grammy award winning star Julie Molina.

-Reggie's in the back of the plane cleaning the toilets but he still hears Luke's screams of joy.

My Jatp Fics: Greatest Hits

It's my birthday! It's also roughly the two and a half year anniversary of me joining this Fandom, which feels like a milestone.

As of now, I've written 75 works for Julie and the Phantoms. 75! That's crazy. Sure, I'd say a lot of my strength lies in exploring small ideas, or in condensing a concept into something short, but... 75!

If you're reading this, I love you! There are so many amazing, talented people in this Fandom and to know you even tangentially is a blessing ❤️ I doubt I would've ever written so much if I wasn't surrounded by so many other passionate creatives.
