Welcome to Night Vale and The Magnus Archives made me realize just how much I want magic to stay sporadic and mysterious. I really liked the early days of both podcasts but once everything turns weird and becomes the norm I lose interest. They didn’t turn bad, they just turned out to be a type of story I personally isn’t into.
I think that’s why I like Lord of The Rings but could never get into Harry Potter. Yes, LoTR is a fantasy world but actual magic is still rare and awe inspiring. In Harry Potter people use magic to wash the dishes.
The best example I can think of from the top of my head is The X Files. They managed to raise the stakes and give us a little more info but the weirdness never turned mundane. It stayed sporadic and mysterious the whole way through.
This is of course just a personal preference but my friend who doesn’t share it and still loves both podcasts got it when they said “When the weird becomes mundane it just turns into a drama using different words” I love how it took someone who doesn’t feel the same way I do about magic in fiction to put my thoughts perfectly into words.
I’d actually really like to hear how you feel about magic and weirdness in fiction. What level does it take to grab your attention and does it ever get too much and become boring or are all levels of magic/weirdness good in your book?

Typography Tuesday
This week we present some type and wood-engraved initials from an edition of Alfred Lord Tennyson's Lyric Poems by the Vale Press, printed in London at the Ballantyne Press in an edition of 320 copies in 1900. British artist, illustrator, printer, and book and type designer Charles Ricketts (1866-1931) founded the Vale Press in 1896 and designed three typefaces for the press. The most commonly used typeface was Vale Type, which is used here. Ricketts also used over 100 ornamental initials which he designed and engraved, several of which are shown here. To make the initials, Ricketts would draw the designs in ink, and then would paste a number of designs onto a single sheet. These were then photographed onto a woodblock, engraved by Ricketts, and finally separated when they were electrotyped.
The Art Nouveau-style border design in the first image was designed by Ricketts and engraved in wood by Charles Edward Keats, who began working for Ricketts in 1899. As Ricketts did not own the requisite printing equipment for his enterprise, he established a relationship with the venerable Edinburgh-founded Ballantyne Press, and this edition was printed by Charles John Holmes, who worked for Ballantyne and became the manager for Vale.
This copy of Lyric Poems is another gift from our friend Jerry Buff.

What even is sleep? Who even needs sleep? Anyway, another night stitching. This time I give you the symbols of the nations from Avatar. Also a leaf of Lórien brooch. Of course I had to include something from one of my favourite things ever.

Faramir and Eowyn Things that give me feels
Faramir teaching her how to read
Eowyn teaching him the speech of the Rohirrim
Their bilingual babies
Eowyn teaching their children riding before they can walk
Faramir reading to them in the womb
Bedtime stories split between tales of Gondor and songs of the Mark
Faramir making sure they know about their brave uncle Boromir
Eowyn taking them to the tomb of Theoden on a trip to see their uncle in Rohan and telling them of their brave grandfather and of his son Theodred who fell before the war
Eowyn and Faramir making sure their children never feel neglected like they had to
The restoration of Ithilien and cleansing of the Morgul Vale
The chance that maybe by the end of their lives a new fair work had replaced Minas Ithil perhaps a garden since no longer was a tower of guard needed
Faramir outliving Eowyn because he is of almost pure Numenorean descent
Naming works started in her life and finished after her death in her honor
Just all the things that they would achieve together and how beautiful they would make the world and how good of parents they would be.
Also Beregond being the most loyal bodyguard ever and probably part time baby sitter and his wife likely becoming the lady in waiting to Eowyn

fun parallels between Night Vale and Hatchetfield:
strange little towns where everyone knows each other
both involve conflicting timelines that split and converge
hated rival towns (fuck you Clivesdale! Booo Desert Bluffs!)
People go missing all the time and this is just normal I guess?
Founded by people into weird rituals (the Waylons / soft meat crown-wearing religious leaders)
The Black and White and The Mudwomb both produced primordial entities of great power
The powerful entities/gods that interact with characters are capable of influence over human minds and/or great destruction - sometimes on an apocalyptic level (The Lords in Black / Huntokar, The Distant Prince, The Smiling God, The Bloodstone Spire, The Beagle Puppy, The Glow Cloud, The Woman from Italy)
