It’s High Time to Get Cosy with Indie Fantasy Books
Picture this. You’ve got a hot cup of tea at your side, you’re snuggled in your favourite armchair, the rain is tapping politely on your window. What better time to crack open a good book? You reach for the latest fantasy epic from a big-name author, but then you remember…you’ve already read this tale a dozen times. Elves, dragons, magical swords – been there, done that, got the t-shirt. Don’t…

A detailed analysis of the problems PoC novelists and marginalized YA authors are facing right now. This issue needs attention paid to it.
The way readers can assist: read more diversely and push these books the way that publishers will understand: wallet-wise. Here's Jessica's list of great recent books of BIPOC authors.

Honestly we could REALLY get into the fact that a lot of the insanity in Acotar is an excellent exercise in why you can't really separate the art from the author.
Sjm's zionism is OBVIOUS in the text. The ic destabilize governments to the detriment of people they will never have to care for, steal artifacts from other countries, displace people, cause invasions, commit war crimes for 50 years "for the greater good" all while their own people are living under unchecked brutality and poverty.
They are rich megalomaniacs that care for no one but themselves and their own emotional and material satisfaction and they are PRAISED for it. In fact anyone who even remotely disagrees with the IC is almost always one of the villains in the story (Beron, Tamlin, etc) as if to condition the reader that asking questions that are critical of the IC puts you on the wrong side of the narrative morally.
All of that sounds REALLL familiar huh?

If the books are Katniss’s memo, we could headcanon Peeta having a personal annotated version with small notes of his perspective and opinions. faces at the Gale kisses. Flirty teasing each time Katniss is obliviously fawning over him. Sweet notes each time Katniss shows how much she needs him. I don’t even know what he would do with the beach scene
In response to what I think is this thread. (and this offshoot thread) ANON. MY DARLING ANON. MY SWEET BABY ANGEL ANON.
ANON YOU'VE GIVEN ME SUCH A WONDERFUL IDEA AND I LOVE YOU FOREVER. Hokay. So (Dis is Earth) WHAT IF WE ANNOTATE A DOC OF THE BOOKS AS IF WE'RE PEETA READING IT AND LEAVING LITTLE NOTES FOR KATNISS TO READ IN THE MARGINS?!?!?!?
Who would want to read this?????
WHO WOULD WANT TO WORK ON THIS WITH ME?????
Tagging @waywardangel-wilds and @sameschmidtdiffname right off the bat as tributes because HOLY SHIT this has the potential for GREAT hilarity.

how about instead of talking about “marginalized voices” in literature we instead spoke about authors systematically denied access to public discourse + authors whose ways of knowing, writing, and storytelling have been repeatedly subjected to epistemic violence. i think this would be helpful.

“Um actually, I don’t think you understand the actual meaning of (insert label here)
Maybe instead of assuming that the person your talking to is an idiot you should question if they actually have formed their opinions of the labels being debated through actual research and reading things from people on those sides of the “debate”
I’m anti-censorship, I’m not pro or anti ship. Because both sides are bad, both sides make threats to each other
Both sides are a huge distraction from real censorship issues.
If you fic gets taken down you can just go to another website or create your own
If lgbtq+ books are banned in schools it’s not as easy for people who may need that info to access it, now is it? Especially if their parents aren’t accepting.
Maybe instead of screeching about which blorbos are the right blorbos to like, or which fictional characters get to play squish and squeeze with each other as if it is going to change the fabric of history and time as it stands, you should be worried about the actual book bans that are destroying actual published authors careers.
Maybe instead of screaming on tumblr where nothing you say will make much of a difference, you should show up at a school board meeting and actually stand up for books that are being banned, which are overwhelmingly penned by lgbtq and/or POC authors.
But y’all won’t, because screaming on the internet into an echo chamber is a whole lot easier.

Just say you think cp is ok as long as the minors are fictional you fuckin pedophile
Normally I ignore hostile or pre-judgmental asks on the off chances I get them, but I'll make exception for this one because it seems like a good opportunity for some much needed nuance-- also because I get this person's disgust, I really do.
But you, my fella, must understand that this isn't about the morality or even lack thereof behind dark fictional content, at all. You must realize that wanting dark and taboo fictional content (yes including that one you mentioned) not being allowed to exist actually does nothing to improve or protect irl lives, much on the contrary actually. No, I don't think there's any possible moral reason behind fictional cp content (nor do I find it 'ok',) but once again, this isn't about morality.
Please take a moment to read this thread (it words this topic better than me) then think it over. Trust me, it's a better use of your time than annoying ppl online with words you can't even bother standing up for with your name/face.

Learning about the Yunmeng Shuangjie and the Nieyao drama through Wei Wuxian's and Nie Mingjue's points of view.

the response from the book community to freydis moon being to just turn and start harassing other anonymous trans and actual bipoc authors is so frustrating (but also very telling), as if there's not a very obvious reason why these people would want to be anonymous. and then to just start harassing them and proving the need for that safety while still pretending to be oblivious is just so vile. i've been anonymous all these years entirely for my safety and i will most likely remain anonymous in all things that i write.
i feel for all of freydis's victims and especially for the trans and latine authors that thought they were their friend. and i feel for all of the other authors and readers that are now being harassed simply for existing in this space alongside them.

Hey mar! For the book ask game, 32, 36, and 37! I think I can guess the first two (Martha Wells and Murderbot, and if so, same). Also, if you haven't read City of Bones by Wells yet, the revised paperback just came out and even though they made the main character less of a snarky bitch (affectionate) I still adore him.
hi kemi :3
32. Name your favorite author(s).
okay BESIDES martha wells then: ursula k. le guin, p. djeli clark, ted chiang
36. Your absolute most favorite character(s) from any book you've ever read.
kakjdgnkj yeah murderbot. but also. jimothy holden my no#1 pathetic sopping wet blorbo from the expanse. and clarissa mao from the expanse as well + avrana kern from children of time… i love you fucked up women
37. The only example of your least favorite trope being written in such a way that you enjoyed it.
so. i really dont care for alien invasion (whether it's outright military invasion or "they are already here quietly taking us over from within"™️) stories. i think they're boring. i think they're a very unimaginative and anthropocentric approach to all the possibilities of alien life. and i think they tend to be a bizarre mix of pro-military stories that literally dehumanize the enemy, xenophobia/racism, straight up mccarthyism, some form of exceptionalism (whether it's american or human), "oo wouldn't it be scary if WE (white people) were colonised"… and when they do try to critique one or more of these i find they inevitably fall short somewhere else.
THAT ALL BEING SAIDDD Dawn by octavia butler.... oh my god. it's such a radical and deeply fascinating departure/subversion of both the "alien invasion" (so much so that you could probably argue whether or not it counts as one) and the "benevolent alien" i could write entire essays about it

bisexuality being perceived as sexual deviance has material consequences for bi people. sometimes that looks like homophobia but it's not the same experience. it's also not an additional layer of hatred "for being other-sex attracted" but a distinct disdain for being wholly bisexual, for being "up for anything," kinky, unfaithful, spreaders of sexual disease, contaminated, immature, unstable. compartmentalizing it based on so-called functional gayness or straightness isn't fair to bi people and imo the implications aren't fair to gay people either

I think one of my least favorite jokes is when, in response to seeing a queer and/or neurodivergent person acting “cringe”, someone (usually white) will go:
“Maybe the republicans/alt right had a point”
Or
“Just call me a slur/hate crime me”
We get it, you’re “not like other gays”. Do you want a cookie?

So among friends I've only heard Death in Venice discussed as an abstract exploration of attraction, beauty & decay but it's also definitely about the partitions of poland right?
Aschenbach is a biographer of Frederick II, he's queer & severe & stalking an innocent kid whose parents named him Tadeusz on the eve of the big behold-the-consequences-of-aristocratic-nationalistic-imperialism war? The idolization of perennially-dying chivalry & the doomed intellectual conquest of other places? The longing for a subject you never expected to lack until everything goes wrong like um

my favorite part of all of this, of every takeaway from this beautiful series, is what we’ve all been saying this past week. yes there was hubris, and arrogance, and selfishness - but the lynchpin of it all, the seed that from all that grew: is love.
it was the love of their spouses, their children, their friends and family that pushed them to be greater, better. it was that love that led laerryn to destroy the tree, it was that love that led quay to lie, it was that love that led zerxus to his downfall.
but it was also that love that allowed patia and nydas to preserve the legacy and future of avalir. its that love that led zerxus to save countless others at the cost of dooming himself. it was that love that led laerynn and loquatious to finish what had to be done. and it was that love that let cerrit keep his promise.
just. its love that makes people. its love that dooms them. and its love that redeems them.

So people are trying to defend Cait Corrain (the idiot who managed to get published but then ruined it for herself with her GoodRead shenanigans) with 'B-but, if a publisher can axe someone because of racism, what precedent does that put for the rest of us~?'
And I just have to ask... Where the fuck were these people when debut authors were getting dropped by publishers, not because of racism, but because whiny piss babies online decided to REEE about 'this book is problematic, uguu~'?
