hello tumblr I feel a need to improve my general media literacy. Please recommend famous books/movies/music/tv shows/short stories/video games/etc. that I should know so that I may consume them. (I am a young adult in the US if that helps) I feel like this is a very vague ask but idk how to narrow it down. I guess I’m particularly interested in sci-fi/cyberpunk novels? I read a lot of fantasy books as a kid but outside of that and school i feel like i haven’t read very many books. I was also raised by parents who didn’t really care to show me “important” movies, so I’ve never seen Citizen Kane, and i saw 2001: A Space Odyssey for the first time only a few months ago. I generally just want to gain a better knowledge of film and writing. I have played a lot of video games, especially from indie devs, and I’m starting to play more AAA titles (basically i think i have a pretty good understanding of the themes and ideas typically presented and expounded on in video games, and i would like to gain a similar understanding of film and writing)

This week’s reading is on Digital Citizenship and Conflict: Social Media Governance

The way the media is evolving is troubling. The western media has brought about a new wave of toxic masculinity that is sweeping through platforms like TikTok. This week's reading touches on that also. Authors Haslop, O’Rourke and Southern discuss the emergence of a gender-related digital divide in UK student online culture. “Online harassment can manifest in different ways” (Haslop, O’Rourke, Southern, 2021 p. 1420) and with that comes the rise of gender-specific hate with “young women in the [UK] are more likely to experience sexualised forms of online harassment” (Haslop, O’Rourke, Southern, 2021 p. 1420). The authors argue that the online culture has become increasingly hostile towards women, with many female students experiencing harassment and abuse online. Overall, this type of harassment has lead to many young women withdrawing from thier normal interactions online and in person after sustaining “psychological and physiological effects” and in extreme cases “Suicidal thoughts”(Haslop, O’Rourke, Southern, 2021 p. 1421). Concluding this text, All of the authors agree on highlighting the importance of creating a safe and respectful online environment for all students, regardless of gender.

The world of Andrew Tate and his devoted followers is one of “violence” (Das,2022). “Andrew Tate says women belong in the home, can’t drive, and are a man’s property”, The guardian editor Shanti Das explains as they go into detail about how crucial it is to not push this type of agenda to young explorers of the internet. Another assigned text interestingly talks about Andrew Tate, and how “Lost men” (Rich, Bujalka 2023) grapples with his warm embrace of masculinity. The popularity of Tate is no surprise, as he has the amazing ability to “stoke and exploit the anxieties and grievances” (Rich, Bujalka 2023) of those who are lost on their path to complete masculinity. The content that comes out of Tates channels “presents deeply concerning perspectives on women” (Rich, Bujalka 2023). The remedying thing to this has been the expulsion of Tate on almost all platforms, “[gaining] infamy last year after being banned on most major social media platforms”. This is called social governance, where it is the process by which societies organize, manage, and regulate themselves to achieve common goals and promote social well-being.

In conclusion, We can see that there are a lot of factors online that are aimed to hurt and to break down others. We can observe that Tate’s reign has made a massive impact on people's lives, but through social governance we can see that we must manage what is being put online.

Prior to beginning the Media Relations course, I envisioned an overview of the practices and processes of Media Relations. I assumed that the course would go over the tasks and expectations of a Media Relations professional, such as a journalist, reporter, or newscaster, but I did not expect to gain as much acumen as I received. I learned so much unexpected skills that allowed me the hands-on opportunity and insights into this career field.

I’m seeking to work in Marketing Research or Event Planning, so having the chance to complete assignments that contain the requirements and knowledge of assembling media kits, constructing press releases, and conducting interviews; instantly placing a feeling and connection with what my desired career path would expect from me.

As a visual learner and hands-on learner, I like to visualize the imagery within the elements and objectives that I am learning about, not to mention the benefit of hands-on assignments. Most online degree environments create difficulty with the hands-on learning experience, simply because the students are outside of a classroom environment. Luckily, with this Media Relations course at Full Sail, I was not deprived of this.

The Week 4 Media Kit assignment allowed me to test my knowledge and the objectives I learned throughout the course with requiring me to finally use my Sony Handycam to create still images, introduce me to B-Roll footage, and taught me how to professionally set up an interview with a client from a Media Relations perspective.

Professionally I will be a beneficial asset to any marketing, ad agency, or branding company, simply because coming in the door, I would have the knowledge and comprehension of the objectives I learned throughout the course. In addition, because I am entering into an industry where I will be bringing in, the fresh skills and knowledge will make me more desirable as a candidate; than another candidate who may have attended higher education in the same field, but 10 years ago, where some ideas and strategies may have gotten outdated.
