It's been a few years since TikTok made it its mission to release new hits. The Chinese platform has already strongly influenced the careers of artists like Lil Nas X, Lizzo, and Doja Cat. But it seems that now has competition on the side of … Twitch. The live video streaming giant is becoming an increasingly important part of the music ecosystem.

Twitch takes the fourth art very seriously. Still, Amazon's subsidiary platform has long been the bane of the music industry. It had drawn the wrath of the influential Recording Industry Association of America in 2020, following numerous breaches of copyright rules. it has since made amends by signing partnerships with Warner Music Group, Universal Music, and indie label Merlin.

These initiatives reflect Twitch's desire to carve out a place for itself in the musical ecosystem like TikTok. Without being a real streaming platform like Spotify or Deezer, the social network has become one of the main prescribers and sources of musical discovery thanks to its short addictive videos.

Twitch seems to be following the same path if a study the live-streaming giant did with Luminate is to be believed. More than 2,300 Americans between the ages of 13 and 40 were surveyed about their use of the platform. It turns out that a third of them now discover new titles and artists thanks to Twitch.

EDM and hip-hop fans

Even more surprising, 54% of respondents broaden their musical horizons on the good advice of streamers. The latter often recommend songs during their "lives", or even invite big names in the song on their channel.

The study, seen by the specialist journal Music Business Worldwide, also claims that Twitch users are very committed music lovers. They spend 21% more time per week listening to music than the “average music listener”. They also don't hesitate to put their hands in their wallets to maintain their love for the fourth art: they spend 46% more per month than the average music consumer.

Twitch users, however, have very strong musical tastes. They seem to particularly appreciate electronic music and EDM. Nothing surprising given that the genre is very present in the soundtracks of video games. They also favor hip-hop, heavy metal, classical music, jazz, and k-pop. Proof, if any more were needed, that the music industry has every interest in taking gamers very seriously.

This very specific gas station in West Virginia I used to stop at at 3AM when I did transport; I mostly stopped to get gas but sometimes I'd go inside--gas stations that are open 24 hours but have no customers in the early hours are pretty magical.

9. If you had to choose a fictional world to live in for the rest of your life, where would it be? oh no. this is such a hard choice honestly. I'd say, maybe the Mass Effect universe. or IDK can I go live on Yoshi's Island?
