Corny, corny ass song.

But I can feel Rancher!Graves' shit-eating grin in my bones.

Graves and his partner- a pretty little thing when two of you were side by side. He wasn't much older than you, yet he had always seemed so given how old fashioned he was- something about the etiquette he followed; how he would open the door of his truck for you to help you in and out, or how he pulled your chair out for you at the dinner table.

The visits to the saloon are less and less frequent now that he's got someone to come home to at the end of the day, but a quick drink to catch up with the other folk every now and then never hurt anyone. News usually traveled fast through town, but for some odd reason, you being Phil's partner didn't.

Or, maybe it did, and everyone expected worse from him. Hushed tone and whispers about how poor little you had been ensnared by Phil's charm. He was reliable for jobs, sure, but the way he was able to smooth talk his way through anything and everything had some people reeling at the idea of him actually being tied down to someone; he was assigned to be the forever-bachelor.

And as much as you hated to admit it, your mind lingered in doubt sometimes. Laying in bed with him, watching in the moonlight as he fell asleep and wondering if he really meant it earier when he said he thought of you and handed you that pretty bouquet of flowers that definitely had to be imported from another state.

Did he really mean to stare at you that lovingly when you brought out a glass of sweet tea for him when he was out hauling around the hay bales?

What about when he held you on the couch when you two were watching that shitty horror movie after dinner, and he jerked you closer and squeezed you after one of the most predictable jumpscares flashed over the screen?

Phil was a great guy. Secure, friendly, plenty capable and ready to help. Cheeky. Unassuming too, if you tried really hard to forget about his rodeo career. He knew better than to brag. And to you, and only you, he was clingy. He tried to make sure you knew that he was dedicated. Lingering touches, long looks, greedy kisses and tight hugs.

If anyone asked you, he was the sweetest thing. Never afraid to love you and show that he really meant it. If you asked anyone else, Phil was like a dog; one that would come when called for a job, willing to play fetch with anyone if they asked nice enough.

So when some other pretty little thing came up and seated herself on the stool next to his to introduce herself to him with that look on her face, no one batted an eye. Well, no one did until he finally finished the glass of whiskey he had been nursing through their mostly one-sided conversation.

"Nah, I'm good."

And heads whipped to look at him. Rejection? Rejection from Phil?

Of course. Phil was serious about you.

"Already got my honey waitin' f' me at home."

What about Rancher!Graves as a kid.

It's established that he's a blonde-haired and blue-eyed American with nothing but love for guns, cows, and his family.

What about this smug asshole as a kid. Middle school aged, maybe.

There's so much love in his life. Raised with chivalry from Pa, gentleness from Ma, certain sass and a "take no shit" attitude from Memaw and Joseph, and a damn good eye for detail from Pop-pop. The walls of the house are littered with framed photographs of the whole family, and there's more photo albums than you can count with two hands.

He's so excited for the school year to end. The school bus drops him off at the end of the dirt path to his family's ranch, and he barely waves goodbye to his friends before he's practically full sprinting towards the big wooden gate to the land.

So excited to finally spend time with the animals and his pa, helping to fix that rickety ol' door in the barn where they keep the cows because Ma keeps complaining about it. It was a little lonely now that his older brother Joseph had shipped off to the army, but he occupied himself. Better to keep busy than to dwell.

Phil certainly spoiled the cows- hosing them up, brushing their coats, even hand drying them when they're finished shaking themselves off.

"Philly, knock it off, will ya? They're gon' start expectin' that from all of us if y' keep it up." "I promise I'll take care o' all of 'em!" "Better keep it- I'm tellin' Ma you said so."

And he does. Even when Pa wakes him up at the ass crack of dawn- when sunlight is barely creeping in towards the horizon- he's suddenly not so tired when he remembers that he's got to feed his cows. Pa has to grab him by the scruff of his neck to keep him from running down the hall.

"Ma'll kill us if y' don't brush yer teeth, boy. She's gonna know that toothbrush o' yers is bone dry. Go on."

He's barely washed his face properly before he's hopping down the stairs, jamming his feet into his boots, grabbing a slice of bread and a hard boiled egg, and hauling himself out the backdoor.

Midday breeze tousles his hair as he rests against the trunk of the big ol' bald cypress out by the horse pen, thumbing through a copy of the latest Spider-Man issue and chewing through an apple as he takes a break from helpin' Ma with her garden. He turns his head when he hears her voice call from the house.

"Philly, it's time for lunch!"

And he scampers off, comic in hand as he tosses the apple core off to the side for whatever animal to find and finish up. Honeysuckle sweet tea, ham sandwiches, fruit. Peaches, from his grandmother's little grove. Makes the damned best filling for his mother's pies- best in the whole state, he'd reckon.

Time to talk an unnecessary amount about floors!

Episode 6 of Dungeon Meshi was produced in collaboration with a smaller studio, Enishiya - and it went way harder than I expected, for being made up of two relatively simple and self contained stories focusing on one character each.

And you can really see how those extra resources meant the animators could give full focus to both halves of the episode. Let's take a look at one piece that stole the show.

The first half was handled primarily by episode director/storyboard artist Keita Nagahara and co-animation director Hirotoshi (or Hiroaki? [1]) Arai. It's actually kinda insane how much of this section can be attributed to these two.

But the real star of the show is the second half, Chilchuck vs the mimic, led by co-animation director Toya Ooshima in his first animation director role for TV anime!

And the biggest aspect that knocked my dang boots off was something that's very consistent with Ooshima's style: background animation!

By animating the backgrounds rather than using painted still images, Ooshima and the team of other similarly skilled animators are able to create these beautiful dynamic camera movements that wouldn't be possible otherwise. Like these cuts by Takeshi Maenami where the camera becomes an expressive part of the scene, zipping forward and backward, and tilting to emphasize the speed of this murderous hermit crab. (Maenami's style is also very recognizable here - snappy timing and quick camera movements)

Or this cut by the incredible Kaito Tomioka which cleverly combines a traditional background for the walls with a fully animated floor. The level of detail in these tiles is just completely insane, and used to great effect with this wide, diagonal angle, and the way the camera tentatively drifts forward before reversing direction, and the tiles blur out as it speeds up.

I don't think I'm the only one caught off guard by how much they full-assed this little side story, but it was a pleasant surprise!
