The Many Goings-on in the Local Parish
New vestments were ordered for Father Lawrence and Father Claudio. Bloody handprints run up and down the stole and alb and they smell like lemons, citrus and strong. Father Lawrence has tried to get in touch with the seller but has had no luck, and Father Claudio has been seen wearing them through the Church. When he does, his eyes…look wrong.
A young deacon came to visit our church from the abbey. Father Claudio forgot to warn him not to use the chalice and paten set donated by Monsignor Nicholson after the church fire. The deacon has already been sent to the hospital, and Father Claudio says he will most likely make a full recovery.
Twelve people cried blood during Benediction last Wednesday evening. Each of them said they saw something moving in the monstrance where the Eucharist sits. Father Lawrence noticed no such thing, but has stressed that each person who was afflicted should make an appointment with their doctors. He seemed…ill at ease to say the least.
The sun shone through the stained glass windows yesterday at 8:00 mass and set Moira Clark on fire. There was nothing left, except for her bones which Father Lawrence found to be inscribed with the Lord’s prayer.
A new couple joined the church and came to Sunday Mass. They stayed for the following mass as well and the one after that. It has been 2 days and they have not left the pew. Father Lawrence wants to call the police. Father Claudio has already called the Archbishop.
Ms. Sandra found a strange box when she was cleaning the Sacristy on Saturday. Inside, she said, she found smoke which lingered within the boundaries of the box. She said it spoke to her and entered into her eyes, she said it was an angel. In any case, Father Claudio has been speaking to her for five days and when he comes out to say Mass, he looks afraid.
Youth Night was a huge success! Honestly, we weren’t sure how it would go, with the Hasbro Ouija fiasco 6 months ago, but it looked like the roof stayed stable throughout the Volleyball tournament and only the normal amount of flies were found in the kitchens. Next week is the Senior’s Potluck, so we’ll see how it goes!

Alexis would definitely be into Steve - and she'd come out with some crazy anecdote when she finds out the truth about him, like, she's telling David and he's like 'So you're still gonna go out with him? Even though he's 95?'
And she's like 'Umm yes, everyone lies about their age, David. I told Jack Nicholson I was 18 just to get on his yacht for spring break and if I hadn't I would never have gotten that amazing rental in LA for my Sweet 16.'
David just sits there baffled. 'That sounds highly illegal. Anyway I have a store to run.'
I'M GETTING CARRIED AWAY NOW
im dying... Hahahahahaha.
Imagine Moira and Johnny? Moira would be cooing over Steve's perfect hair and talking about how SHE could pull it off. She would order that style right away and that wig's name is of course Stevie, which kind freaks out front desk Stevie.
"Don't touch Stevie!" Moria yells suddenly when Johnny was trying to fix a stray and Stevie is behind the counter looking confused.
"But Mr. Rose isn't even near me."
"Oh not you Stevie, the important Stevie." Moria fixes her wig dramatically. "At this point your immune to everything that has touched you Stevie."

Panic Ending Explained: Who Wins the Deadly Game?
https://ift.tt/2Tubj9j
This article contains MAJOR spoilers for Amazon TV show Panic.
Panic, a teen-centric dramatic thriller based on the book by Lauren Oliver, just dropped on Amazon Prime, and it’s filled with unexpected twists. The series incorporates a few mysteries into its 10-episode run. While the main question that drives the Panic plot is “Who, if anyone, will win Panic and take home the cash prize?”, the deaths of two Panic contestants the previous year adds a further level of intrigue to the pretty teen thriller. Now that the entire first season has been released on Amazon Prime, we’re breaking down all of the mysteries at the heart of Panic.
What is Panic?
Every summer, graduating seniors compete in Panic, a series of challenges that force participants to face their deepest fears, all for a shot at winning a large cash prize. All seniors are eligible, but only one person can win, and this year, the pot is bigger than it’s ever been—$50k. Many see this as the only way out of the small, nowhere town and take on the challenges despite the danger they pose. Heather Nill (Olivia Welch) surprises everyone, including herself, when she joins the game last-minute, and takes an immediate lead with a daring jump in the inaugural challenge. With all eyes on Heather, she has to navigate the game, her hectic family life, and her relationships with her best friends Natalie (Jessica Sula), now her competitor, and Bishop (Camron Jones) who she’s developed feelings for.
How is the Panic Game Organized?
Panic is an open secret in the small town of Carp, Texas. People know about the game, but not even the participants have all the information. There is a bag man, who holds the money, two judges, who set challenges and award points, and the MC, who hosts the challenges. No one knows who started Panic, and no one knows who the judges are—each judge chooses their own successor for the following year. The game is played in public, mostly under the radar of local law enforcement, but after the death of two teens in the previous game, Sheriff Cortez (Enrique Murciano) has the department on high alert. Every challenge already comes with some element of danger—the second challenge was crossing an unsteady beam several stories off the ground—but being in the Sheriff’s crosshairs makes it all the more dangerous.
Who Dies in Panic?
Heather and Natalie agree to team up and split the winnings, but Natalie secretly makes the same deal with the new boy, Dodge (Mike Faist). Ray (Ray Nicholson) is the resident “bad boy” who feels threatened by Dodge, so he antagonizes him, and becomes smitten with Heather, so he antagonizes her. They’re all frontrunners in the game until Natalie is disqualified for cheating in one of the challenges, and Heather misses a challenge after a fight with her mother’s boyfriend. The final two players are Ray and Dodge, and the winner will be decided in Joust, or a game of chicken. But neither Dodge nor Ray participate in the final challenge. Cortez drives Dodge’s car and Heather drives Ray’s, and when a tiger crosses the road, Heather brakes and Cortez swerves, thus yielding and losing the game. Cortez makes it out of the vehicle before it blows up but he doesn’t get very far. Melanie Cortez (Moira Kelly) shoots her husband point-blank with a rifle and drives off with his mistress Jessica Mason (Nancy McKeon), leaving him to become tiger food. It’s what he deserves.
Who Killed Abby & Jimmy?
Sheriff Cortez sends his deputies on a wild goose chase to distract them from his participation in Panic. The two players who died in last year’s game were Cortez’s son Jimmy (David De La Barcena) and his son’s girlfriend Abby (Avianna Mynhier), who was pregnant. Jimmy killed himself in a game of Russian Roulette and Abby crossed a highway blindfold and was hit by a truck. The gun was supposed to be a training gun with fake bullets, but it had been switched out with a real gun. Abby had been receiving harassing letters calling her a whore and threatening to expose her; she was pushed to the brink. Cortez was in huge debt, so he bet on Panic, then attempted to fix the game by taking out players who threatened his son’s win, including Abby. His meddling—switching out the guns and writing those letters—led to both of their deaths. But instead of trying to put a stop to the game this year, he was hoping to take advantage of it… again.

Heather Solves the Panic Mystery
Cortez hooked up with Jessica under the false pretenses of helping her find the person responsible for paralyzing her daughter, Dana. They concocted a plan where her son, Dodge, would play Panic and, according to Cortez, have an opportunity to get revenge. Cortez lied about who was responsible—blaming Ray’s older brother and previous Panic winner Luke—and manipulated them so Dodge would play Panic, and he could bet on him. But Heather figured out the ploy when she discovered the note Cortez gave her little sister Lilly (Kariana Karhu) convincing her to help Heather win the game by entering the tiger cage. The handwriting matched the betting slips she found in an earlier challenge. Knowing Cortez would be driving Dodge’s car, Heather took Ray’s truck so she could face him herself. Neither of them knew that Dodge planted a bomb on Ray’s truck or that Ray found the bomb and put it on Dodge’s car, but they knew the final challenge would be explosive.
Who Wins Panic?
The sheriffs interrupted the second challenge and Ray’s friend Sarah (Maya Hendricks) was arrested and given community service at the sheriff’s station. She overheard conversations about Panic, and that they suspected Bishop was involved, and investigated herself. She found evidence hidden in his room that he was a judge, and warned him to move it. Later, she followed him to where the money was stashed, and stole it. After the game ended, judges—of which Natalie was one— decided that Heather was this year’s winner. Bishop sold his Audi to replace the missing pot, and awarded it to Heather.
Who Ends Up Together on Panic?
Heather and Bishop are friends to lovers back to friends. Heather and Ray are enemies to lovers. Natalie and Dodge are mutually-using-the-other turned lovers. All friendships remain intact.

Panic is an easy binge that is just intriguing enough intrigue to keep you watching, but is casual enough to enjoy the pretty people doing stupid things. The lesson here is: never trust the cops. Panic is now available to stream on Amazon Prime.

June 2021 Roundup
It's been a month of highs and lows. Every year my city holds a cabaret festival, and I've seen some truly amazing acts over the years - including Lea Salonga, Kristin Chenoweth, and Indina Menzel. This year's Artistic Director was the great Alan Cumming, and although due to covid he didn't quite get to curate the program he wanted to, the opening night Gala was still a highlight, as was Alan's DJ set at the pop-up Club Cumming afterwards, where there was much singing at the top of my lungs and dancing to pop anthems and theatre tunes. At one point Alan, dressed in a onesie and perched on the shoulders of a man wearing only sparkly short shorts, was carried around the dance floor while Circle of Life blared. Reader, I was delighted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was also able to see his solo show Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age, which was hilarious and damn, he can sing!
As for the low, I was meant to fly to Sydney for the weekend to see Hamilton, a trip I have been looking forward to for almost a year, but had to be cancelled because of a covid outbreak and border closures. The tickets have been rescheduled, but I'm still kind of bummed about it (while completely appreciating the need for covid safety, especially when our vaccine rollout has been completely botched by our incompetent, corrupt federal government)
Anyway.
Reading
The Hundred and One Dalmations (Dodie Smith) - With all the bewilderment over Disney's Cruella, I decided to revisit the original novel which I first read as a kid. It's funny, I had very vivid memories of this book, or rather thought I did, particularly the scene where Roger and Anita have dinner at Cruella's house that fixed in my young mind as utterly disturbing with all this devil imagery and the implication Cruella was literally some kind of demon, which must have been either a) my overactive imagination or b) an illustration, because it's not as clear as I thought it was. The strangeness is there (food with too much pepper, Cruella's inability to keep warm, the walls painted blood red) but not the explicit demon imagery I had remembered. There is a part later in the book recounting the history of Hell Hall and the rumors of Cruella's ancestor streaking out of the place conjuring blue lightening, but clearly child me was reading far more into the book than was on the page.
But I still wish they'd gone with this version of Cruella's backstory, because to me an aristocratic, ink-drinking, heat-obsessed, possibly-demon spawn, high camp villain is more interesting and rings far more true than plucky punk against the establishment.
Smith clearly had Facts About Dalmations to share, and she does really craft a wonderful animal-based story that the Disney animated film is largely faithful to. Key differences include: Roger's occupation (he doesn't have to pay tax because he wiped out government debt somehow?!?), Pongo's mate and the puppy's mother is called Missis, Perdita is another dalmation who acts as a kind of doggie wet nurse, Roger and Anita both have Nannies who come to live with them (Nanny Butler and Nanny Cook), Cruella is married to a furrier (who changed his last name to de Vil). Also odd, on her first description Cruella is described as having "dark skin" but later in the novel her "white face" is mentioned, so I'm chalking it up to 50's descriptors not having the same meanings they do today.
The Duke and I (Julia Quinn) - After being just whelmed by the tv series, I wasn't really planning on reading the books, but I saw this on the top picks shelf at the library and damn, the top picks shelf is irresistible. This is very much Daphne's book (and I had known each in the series dealt with the different sibling) so many of the characters and much of the plot of the show is absent, as are some of the more baffling elements of the show like the Diamond of the First Water nonsense, which I always thought was a strange character choice in that it stacks the deck for Daphne when her character arc is better served as somewhat of an underdog (in her third season, the kind of girl who is liked but not adored), and the Prince subplot which was always far too OTT even for soapy regency romance.
It's a breezy, fun read (that scene excepted), even if the misunderstandings are contrived and I'm never going to take "I'll never have kids because I hate my dad" as a credible romantic obstacle deserving of so much angst.
Faeries (Brian Froud and Alan Lee) - A lovingly detailed and illustrated compendium of Faerie and its inhabitants, drawing from a range of European (but primarily Celtic) folklore and mythology. Froud was a conceptual designer on The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth, and the link is clear in the art as well as the focus on faeries as mysterious but oftimes sinister beings, where human encounters with them rarely end well. Lee has illustrated several publications of Tolkien's novels, and was a lead concept artists for Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies, and there is a touch of Middle Earth here as well, or rather the common inspiration of the old world. A useful resource for my novel!
Watching
The Handmaid's Tale (season 4, episodes 4-8) SPOILERS - So when I last wrote about this show in the Roundup, I was complaining it wasn't going anywhere. Well, I'm happy to be wrong because they finally changed things up with June finally escaping to Canada. That part of the plot following the survivors and their trauma has always been far more compelling than Gilead, and so it was a welcome development even if I side-eye some of the choices (none of these characters is seeing an actual licensed therapist why?).
This show has always been difficult to watch given the subject matter, and that has not changed after the shift in power dynamics. I will give the show credit for showing a broad range of trauma responses, from Moira wanting to move on and not let it consume her, to June, a ball of rage and revenge on a downward spiral, to Emily, trying to follow Moira's path but being drawn to June's, to Luke, trying his best but utterly unequipped to deal with what is happening.
But it is very hard to watch June go down this path - raping her husband (I concede the show perhaps didn't intend for it to be rape, but that's what is on screen and framing it as just "taking away Luke's agency" doesn't change that), wishing death on Serena's unborn child, and orchestrating Fred's brutal murder by particulation, then holding her own daughter still covered in his blood and it getting smeared on Nicole's face (an unsubtle metaphor in a series full of unsubtle metaphors).
There are interesting questions being asked of the viewer, and the show (perhaps rightly) not giving any answers. I can certainly appreciate the catharsis of Fred getting what he deserves even if I personally find the manner of it horrifying, but where is the line between justice and revenge, is revenge the only option when justice is denied, when does a trauma release become cyclical violence/abuse - the show is, for now, letting the viewer decide.
Soul (dir. Pete Docter and Kemp Powers) - In a world full of remakes/reboots/sequels, Pixar is perhaps the lone segment under the Disney umbrella committed to original content. However, there does seem to be a Pixar formula at work directed to precision tugging the heart strings, and some of the film feels like well-trod ground. On the other hand, it's hard to criticise the risk of centering a kids film around the existential crisis of a middle aged man, even with the requisite cutesy elements (and of course, the uncomfortable pattern of yet another film where the black lead character spends a great deal of the runtime in non-human form - herein, an amorphous blob or a cat). But the animation is stunning, it successfully did tug my heart strings, and the design of the Great Before and the Jerrys is original and fun.
RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under - Drag Race is somewhat of a guilty pleasure for me, since I generally don't watch reality shows, and this is something I really enjoy even if I'm not invested in the fandom (which like many fandoms can be very yikes). This year it was time for the Australian/New Zealand (Aotearoa) queens to show their stuff, although it's been met with mixed reactions. Covid restrictions didn't allow for guest judges, relegating them to mere cameos via video calls, and its clear that Ru and Michelle really don't quite get all the cultural nuances - Aussie judge Rhys Nicholson was however always delightful. But it wouldn't be Australia without a racism scandal, with the great disappointment of the two queens of colour eliminated first, and one queen having done blackface in the recent past yet making it all the way to the top four.
In the end, the only viable and deserving winner was last Kiwi standing Kita Mean, and it was pure joy to see her get crowned. I do hope they fix the bugs and indeed do another season to better showcase AU/NZ talent.
Writing
A far more productive month - to try and get out of my writing funk I had a goal to try and write every day, even if it was only 100 words. While I didn't quite achieve a consecutive month, I did get a pretty good average, at least got something posted and two others nearly there.
The Lady of the Lake - 2441 words, Chapter 4 posted.
Against the Dying of the Light - 2745 words
Turn Your Face to the Sun - 1752 words.
Here I Go Again - 1144 words
Total words this month: 8082
Total words this year: 35,551

Percy Hague Jowett
Percy Jowett was born in Halifax, Yorkshire on 1st June 1882. He studied at Leeds College of Art under Gerald Moira from 1902-1904. In 1904 he entered the Royal College of Art in London on a Royal Exhibitioner scholarship and receiving his Diploma in 1907.
He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1907, and continued to exhibit there until the 1920s.

In 1910 he won the Prix de Rome, a Travelling Scholarship in Painting allowing him to travel to Italy and the British School in Rome. He taught for a time at Beckenham School of Art before serving in the Royal Garrison Artillery, seeing action in France and Flanders during World War I. While at Beckenham he would teach Charles (Cyril) Mahoney and be on a staff with R. V. Pitchforth and Henry Carr.
He was married 11 Sep 1912, at St John the Evangelist, Putney, London, SW, to Enid Ledwood, sister of the sculptor, Gilbert Ledwood. Before he was married he shared lodgings with Newbury Abbott Trent at 14 Gunter Grove, Chelsea. Trent also married one of Gilbert’s sisters.
In 1927 Jowett was appointed Head of Chelsea School of Art. In 1935 was appointed Principal of the Royal College of Art replacing William Rothenstein. While at the RCA he gave the sculptor Henry Moore his first job and would have been at the centre of the current and future art world in the UK. Other candidates suggested for the Principal were Noel Carrington, H.H.Holden (the Principal of Birmingham), A.B.Knapp-Fisher; W.M.Whitehead and Edward Montgomery O'Rorke Dickey (of the Board of Education / War Artists Scheme).
Jowett was to help move the RCA into both a place to refine artists but also to make a bridge between artists and manufactures, from designs in furniture and publishing to wallpapers and fabrics.
Jowett had a broad teaching experience and as a painter, he had exhibited widely. He had proven his ability to get on well with manufacturers, as well as with fellow heads of educational institutions. He also, though a fine artist, realised the importance of industrial art, a key factor when the Board was facing criticism over the College.

Percy Hague Jowett - Hillside, (In My Collection)
He was invited by the print-maker Claude Flight to join the ‘Seven & Five Group’. In 1921 Jowett acted as the Secretary of the Seven and Five Society and would be replaced by John Piper in 1934.
The Seven and Five Society was an art group consisting mainly of ex-servicemen who had been art students before the war. Their goal was to exhibit  work rather than have a bold manifesto or be tied to a art style. It was easier to exhibit work in large numbers as the cost would be reduced on mass. The society was set up in 1920 but in 1924 Ben Nicholson was made a member. He more or less became a cuckoo in the nest for the group and elected his friends. In 1929 the group added the new members of Christopher Wood, Cedric Morris, Sidney Hunt, William Staite Murray, Frances Hodgkins, Jessica Dismorr, Evie Hone, Edward Wolfe and David Jones, as well as Alfred Wallis as a guest exhibitor. Nicholson voted to change the name to the ‘7 & 5 Society’ to look more modernist but failed to get the group changed to ‘7 & 5 Abstract Group’. The old members were confused and angry that their group was being steamrolled into following his way and Nicholson added a new rule that exhibitions were to be non-representational and the hanging committee were only empowered to select and hang abstract work finally segregating the original members. The reaction was the departure of a number of artists in 1934: Edward Bawden, John Aldridge, Frances Hodgkins, Cedric Morris, Len Lye and the previous secretary, Percy Jowett. Replacement members and exhibitors included John Piper, Arthur Jackson and John Cecil Stephenson, all of whom worked in a non-representational manner. After this point the group renamed itself as the ‘Seven and Five Abstract Group’ in 1935 but only had one show after the point and the group was disbanded.
Jowett exhibited 11 times out of the society’s 14 shows from 1921-1933.

Percy Hague Jowett - Canal, 1936 (The Hepworth Wakefield)
Jowett exhibited 12 times at the Royal Academy, he was a member and exhibitour at the Royal Watercolor Society, R.W.A., N.E.A.C., New English Art Club, Redfern Gallery, the Fine Art Society and in the provinces and abroad.
He was elected a member of the New English Art Club.
During World War II he served on the War Artists’ Advisory Committee alongside Kenneth Clark, then Director of the National Gallery.
Percy Jowett considered Evelyn Dunbar 'A very fine artist who has done excellent decorations as well as drawings.
He was an outstanding teacher, remembered with affection by his students, and this has probably obscured his reputation as an artist.

Percy Hague Jowett - Hills and Hedges, (In My Collection)
His one man shows were held at St. George's Gallery in 1923, 1925, 1927 and 1929. He was elected a member of the N.E.A.C. 1929, A.R.W.S. 1936, R.W.S. 1938. His work is in the collections of many galleries, including the Hepworth Wakefield, Laing, Leeds University and Gloucester Museum Service, The British Government Art Collection, the Victoria and Albert Museum and many private collections. The Michael Parkin Gallery held an exhibition of his work in 1995.
Jowett lived in London and died on 4th March 1955 while residing at 28 Drayton Gardens, SW10. Enid died 10th October 1971, while residing at 28 Drayton Gardens, SW10. The Jowetts are buried at Putney Vale Cemetery and Crematorium, Wimbledon, London Borough of Merton, Greater London.

Why didn’t they ask Evans? Rereading. Chapter 33.
Frankie saves Bobby’s life by jogging his elbow and preventing him from drinking the poisoned coffee.
Moira Nicholson is Mrs Templeton?? Major plot twist. 😮
Frankie stops Mrs Templeton from shooting a gun at her and Bobby.
Go Frankie!
Frankie sends the poisoned coffee sample to Doctor Arbuthnot to prove it was poisoned.
Chapter 34.
Frankie receives a letter from Roger Bassington Ffrench.
Roger mentions he’s now in South America living a new life. He basically explains he was the murderer and how the Caymans were working for him.
How is his letter not used by the police to arrest him??
Roger is being witty but cruel in talking about John Savage and Bobby.
Roger points out he murdered John Savage and Sylvia Bassington Ffrench’s husband.
Roger nicknames Bobby’s gallantry as knight errantry.
Mrs Templeton was the one who had helped untie Roger so he could escape from the Police.
Roger said he was getting tired of Mrs Templeton, and that he likes variety. I really don’t care about his love life, he’s such a you know what.
Roger’s last words in his letter: “So here I am, starting again. All owing to you and that extremely objectionable young man, Bobby Jones. I have no doubt that I shall make good. Or do I mean make bad?
Your affectionate enemy, the bold bad villain of the piece, Roger Bassington Ffrench.”
