OBM RANT (because I am sick of the B.S.):

So I’m scrolling on Instagram looking for Simeon pictures to and lo and behold, I come across whitewashed / filtered pictures of not just one, but nearly EVERY Simeon picture!

And I noticed this is often a trend in this fandom with COC: if that character can’t be whitewashed, then let’s write him off as “tanned” or “light brown” (which makes literally no sense because dark- complexioned character’s like Simeon are beautiful so why should that change??) but some of you guys really have it in your minds Simeon’s no such thing. And not just Simeon, but Mammon & Diavolo. It’s like the lighter the character, the easier it is to try create art that whitewashes that character and furthermore, write it off as “lighting.” (Now how many times have we heard this??)

And oh my god the writing.

I meant to mention this before, but I’ve also seen the same thing happen in writing!! Like I’ll be on AO3 reading an Obey me Fic, and COC are always boiled down to their complexions being described as “tan,” “light brown,” “caramel complexioned” when characters of color come in more shades & complexions then that. Describing a character who isn’t white with the same two // three color descriptions boils down the writing, and the opportunity for the writer’s writing to grow for POC characters. and like no offense, I never see this as a problem for Non- COC.

But back to the filters/ editing.

I know people who are fed up with the whitewashing and filters have called it out multiple times, but this is just ridiculous. and for those who may quickly think “here comes another person making everything about race” — just know when you point out obvious changes in a characters appearance that yes, very much so has to do with the character’s color & race, it automatically is about race. And honestly: why go through the trouble of changing a character’s skin tone people are OBVIOUSLY going to point out? You can use your editing skills for anything else yet choose this.

currently got a few things (that I'd put in or not as was relevant to that day, and might re-add after already doing it for the day.): assignment for ATSI class notes/reviewing notes for ATSI class textbook reading for ATSI class assignment for mid class notes/reviewing notes for mid class textbook reading for mid class organising for coc [rare] assignment for mh class notes/reviewing notes for mh class textbook reading for mh class review from previous semesters review medications [I passed that class with precisely 50% and cried with relief when I passed; if I reach that level of stress that I had with that one at one point, again, I'll probably have to check myself into a psych ward tbh] research one of the various research projects I want to explore at some point play with ransom :) write :) plan/outline :) edit :) art :) cook :) photography/sort photographs :) tumblr/discord :) read :) piano :) [if I get an electric piano lol]

Make It Up To Me, 8k, rated E This was my main Erotic Gropefest collab with @stardustasincocaine and it's also probably the fic I wrote over the longest period of time? My schedule is really crazy so I'm usually a "sit down and bang it out" kind of writer (pun intended... this fic is VERY smutty lmao). I'm extremely proud of how it turned out, and Tessa's art for this fic is next level. TLDR: Dom/sub dynamic, lots of sex, lots of feelings.

The Edge of Memory, 8k, rated T The only non-explicit fic that made my top 5! Lol. In contrast to the previous fic, this one I wrote in one crazy sprint in less than 12 hours as a pinch hit for @captain-aralias. I'm honestly kind of obsessed with how it turned out? Who knew I could write an interesting plot without sex? Not me. I also never did it again lmao. TLDR: Canon divergent amnesia fic where Simon loses his memory right after he defeats the Humdrum and the Mage and forgets all of 8th year.

Angst, COC 2021, 2k, rated E This is probably my favorite thing I wrote for COC 2021, and I wrote... a lot. Like 50,000 words, more than I've ever written in that short a time before. It's honestly a pretty fucked up ficlet, but it was extremely cathartic to write. Plus, what was I supposed to do with the angst prompt? NOT torture Baz? TLDR: Coffin fic, coffin fic, COFFIN FIC!

A Room with a View, 7.5k, rated E I feel like this was the first truly filthy thing I ever wrote for the CO fandom, and I simply have not looked back since. This fic was a gift for @mostlymaudlin, who gave the most delicious and inspiring prompts (and also just makes delicious and inspiring content on the reg), and I reeeally wanted to do it justice for them. I'm quite pleased with how it turned out. TLDR: Baz and Simon go on a ski vacation and fuck a lot. Bonus Brobelove!

Every Part of You, 8k, rated E This was the first fic I wrote after really connecting with other people in the fandom, and it was a gift for @caitybug :) It's sweet, a lil smutty, a little angsty. Honestly, I don't think it's as good as some of my more recent stuff, but it has a special place in my heart because it helped me connect to some of my fave fandom humans <3 TLDR: Simon works through his feelings both with sex and with words and a lot of help from Baz.

oooh, i haven't! i also don't even know what § is when it's at home. going to look it up now...

ok, it's "a typographical character for referencing individually numbered sections of a document" and may also be used to reference paragraphs. i guess that's why i don't use it..

30. Do you like writing for prompts, challenges etc?

yes!! that's why i've got THREE FICS for challenges i'm working on right now, and i also run @carryonprompts a tumblr specifically for prompts  in the hope of getting good prompts from other people, that's how much i like writing for prompts and challenges.

the kind of prompts i'm not as into are ones where it's just a word, or the challenge is to write lots of things because i have forgotten how to write short things and i don't write that quickly, so i always see COC go by and think 'alas, i wish i was part of that', but i know it's not right for me, or i could be part of it. and i also don't really like fests where i have to come up with my own idea with no constraints, because i can do that anyway and the bad thing about fests, at least in our fandom, is that they can drive traffic down, rather than up.

so - i love fests, i love prompts, but i choose the ones i do. @co-wipadoption and @carryon-reverse-bang were both perfect for me, as they both insist on me writing something quite specific and possibly quite different from what i'd normally write. plus i love being in the position of choosing - i really enjoyed that for CORB. which of these many good ideas do i want to write the most. and there was art, which is lovely. almost all writers i know are feral for art, it is just a fact.

40. Favorite story you've written? (in general or for a specific fandom)

for CO, it's probably still The Mage's Heir, although it's getting quite old and non-canonical now.

more recently, i have loved Classroom Politics - possibly even more than RE. maybe in part because its the earlier version, and i tend to like the first time i do things, plus i just think it's pretty good!

§) A fandom or ship you wish had more fic for you to read

ok, so my first thought is....... i kind of wish baz/lamb was more of a thing. it's not that i want them to be together, but i've basically read all the ones that do exist. at the moment i feels really transgressive to go there at all, i'd like it to just be a normal ship. and i'd probably still read most of it. (except like, baz and lamb buy curtains or something, but to be honest, i would also read that, as long as it was by the kind of person who would write baz/lamb right now and knows it's kind of weird and bad but also good.) (i'm not into lamb as an abusive boyfriend background character, though. he should be a proper character who just doesn't care about other people's feelings.)

back in blake, i really wanted more avon/soolin - which is probably nothing like baz/lamb really, but now i've connected them, i feel like maybe it is. because avon is like baz, and soolin is like... a cooler version of avon, who is not actually romantically interested in him, but might be willing to fuck him. meanwhile by the time avon meets soolin, he's already totally crazy (IMO) about blake and drowning under his own problems...

but i also would have read almost anything in b7 as long as the fundamental principle of avon being in love with blake was upheld, he can bang anyone he wants while blake is missing and he's making bad choices all round. so, too - AU canon divergence, baz never confessed to simon, lamb never betrayed baz... (this will not be in the fake fiance fic, don't worry. we don't have time for this, and it's a shared project so i wouldn't put this in there.)

anyway, we're getting too deep on this one. baz/lamb curtain fic where baz is in love with simon, you get me?

oh - and the other day i was talking about baz/agedup!humdrum angst. i'd like there to be more of that, too.

So I'm terrified of reading CoC. All of the art makes me so emotional, but I still force myself to read it because it's so good. Then I start try to make something as amazing as that and just end up crying???

Do you have any art tips or any words of advice? How do you find the motivation to do all of it? How do you not throw that motivation away because you just don't want to do it? Also how the heck do you make artist friends? I've been trying to make some so I can draw with someone, but I can't find anyone.

Oh my gosh!! THANK U…. I JUST HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS ABT THE CTHULHU BOYS MYSELF…..

Okay lemme see if I can answer these questions in a non-rambling way!!

How do u not throw away motivation when you don’t want to do things? I think if you don’t want to do things, like you ACTUALLY don’t want to do them, and it’s something you’re supposedly doing for enjoyment, it is good and fine to just not do them!! Like, I only draw because I want to. If you don’t want to do something, and you stop and don’t do it until you want to do it again, that is not actually a failure. Obviously there’s exceptions and nuance to this -- sometimes you have to do art for work if you’re a professional artist, and sometimes folks will know from experience that doing art even when you don’t feel like it will ultimately give you joy and satisfaction so you do your best to get over that hurdle, but forcing yourself to do art when it isn’t enjoyable or fulfilling is actually how you get burnout. I also think that Doing Other Things And Cultivating Other Skills And Hobbies Besides Drawing is an almost essential thing for artists to do and highly recommend it. When you’re doing things in your free time, do the things you WANT to do!

How do you find motivation? The joke answer to this question is “hyperfixation lol” but I think the actual answer here is self-indulgence. BE SELF-INDULGENT!!! If you’re looking at a cool story or a cool piece of art and thinking “I want to make a thing that is as cool and impactful as my favourite thing” then like… what is there for your brain to even work with there? That’s so vague, and the pressure becomes so huge that it feels impossible. Whereas if you’re like “I LOVE MY OCs AND I NEED TO SHOW OTHER PEOPLE HOW MUCH OF A HIMBO MY ONE OC IS” or “I JUST HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS ABOUT SAMMY LAWRENCE SMOOCHING JACK AFTER RECOVERING FROM TRAUMA AND I NEED TO CONVEY WHY IM SO EMOTIONAL ABOUT THIS” then like, THATS something you can get powered up about!!! People shy away from being self-indulgent because they think they’re supposed to be appealing to other people, or trying to figure out what other people think is cool, but the truth is that when you are really, REALLY absolutely into the thing you’re making? IT SHOWS, that love pours out of it and when you find the other people who wanted that content that you made just for you, they will get SO EXCITED. Draw the ideas that make you go HELL YEAH HELL YEAH HELL YEAH. The Call of Cthulhu game is MASSIVE self-indulgence for all of us and that’s why we’re so excited about it!! Every once in a while I think to myself “what would be a Cool Picture of Sammy Lawrence that other people in the fandom would like that might get a bunch of notes” and sometimes I even have ideas, but I never ever get around to drawing them because there are so many other things I would RATHER be drawing that are just very exciting to me personally. 

How do you make artist friends? As far as I know there’s not One Weird Trick to making friends of any particular sort, but my experience is -- (a) do things that you like, (b) join groups / communities / forums / follow on social media / discord servers for people who do the things that you like, (c) interact with those people in ways that are fun, (d) if you happen to both enjoy interacting and reciprocate with each other then you can interact more and invite each other to new and different interactions and lead towards some level of friendship! A lot of the art friends I have now are folks from a community for a browser game we all played -- I drew a bunch of fanart and liked their fanart and enjoyed yelling headcanons about the characters with them, and we ended up enjoying each other enough to want to do other things together, too. Friendship isn’t a thing where you like, find people you like and then try to figure out how to make them like you back, or an exchange where if you listen to someone talk about X then they’re required by friend rules to listen to you talk about Y. Instead, friendship is about running into people who are a good fit for you in circumstances where you click with them and have things in common, or things you can both share. So the part you can be proactive about is meeting people! And knowing that if people don’t become friends with you or a community isn’t fun for you, you can just wander off and try to meet other people. Sometimes this takes a bunch of tries, so I wish you the best in the art friend gacha!!

Fic Rec Friday

Listen. It’s no longer Thursday, and yesterday was a wild day anyway (happy Thanksgiving to people who celebrated!), and I didn’t see any Thirsty Thursday posts, so I’m making one for today and calling it Fic Rec Friday because I want to. 

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these, and I’ve been struggling to read much fic lately (my “marked for later” list is over 200 fics long!!!), but here are some recent things I’ve read and enjoyed!

WILDFLOWER by @ninemagicks — This was an exchange gift for me, and I feel like the luckiest person in the world. This fic is incredible, and I cannot possibly rec it enough! 

I also highly rec @vampire-named-gampire‘s COC series! Check out her tumblr for them, since not all are on AO3. They are cute and fluffy and fun.

@llamapyjamas ficlet Three Days, written for COC. Soft and sweet snowbaz in love. 

Okay, I want to list almost every COC series at this point, but I want room for some non-COC fics, too! Go stalk the @carryon-countdown page. I have so much to catch up on, but I’ve seen so many good fics and ficlets and art already, and the next month is going to be a whirlwind of incredible content! I rec every since COC fic. Full stop. Go read them.

Mi Chamocha by @amphipodgirl — An exodus AU for COTTA that I had the absolute pleasure to beta. This fic is emotional, extremely detailed and as historically accurate as possible, and overall a heart-wrenching yet heartwarming read.

My Personal Snowstorm by @sharing-a-room-with-an-open-fire — first and only fic I’ve ever read with an agender character, and the way Di wrote it is phenomenal. The fic is short and sweet, and well worth a read (or two)!

In the Heat of it All by waveydnp (if anyone knows their tumblr, let me know) — this fic dove right into exploring the developing intimacy between an 8th year established-relationship snowbaz at Watford. A heavy dose of hurt/comfort (emphasis on the comfort) with some very steamy parts.
