The plagues of Jiang Wanyin by Lyna_Mei

The plagues of Jiang Wanyin
by Lyna_Mei
T, 54k, Wangxian
Summary: The morning he was supposed to make a visit to Lanling Jiang Cheng rose from bed earlier than usual and was confronted with the harsh reality of being a sect leader. He was getting ready for the day when a sharp and urgent knock on the door distracted him from his morning routine. His first disciple, Jiang Qingmei, entered the room in a rush with a troubled expression on his face. Or, Jiang Cheng is forced to face consequences of his actions of the past sixteen years. Things go down very quickly. Kay's comments: This is THE story for everyone wishing that Jiang Cheng would have gotten some permanent and not just emotional damage post-canon. It's mostly CQL-canon, but it also follows the plot points of the novel about how Jiang Cheng was hunting demonic cultivators in the years Wei Wuxian was dead. Now, his actions are finally catching up to him and it's beautiful to watch his house of cards collapse. Very satisfying all around. Also, I adore Lyna_Mei as an author - chef's kiss. Excerpt: "Lotus plants, zongzhu," Jiang Qingmei answered immediately. "Some of our disciples noticed something strange with lotus plants yesterday while taking a late swim. I sent people to check in the morning and they discovered that lotuses in our lakes were struck with some disease". This was bad. Obviously, some plants die every season but for Jiang Qingmei to run to him so early in the morning it must be massive. He should skip breakfast and go and see for himself, then if things are truly that bad - write a note to Jin Ling telling his nephew he wouldn't be able to come. Jiang Cheng didn't want to start imagining how big the problem was. Besides, it was always better to know for sure than to build suggestions and then come face to face with reality. So he quickly finished his hair and reached for Zidian and Sandu. "How much are we talking about?" he asked. Jiang Qingmei looked at him with something akin to fear before finally answering. "We might lose seventy to ninety percent of our harvest, zongzhu".
pov jiang cheng, post-canon, the untamed compliant, mdzs & the untamed combination, cultivation sect politics, not jiang cheng friendly, family feels, implied/referenced child abuse, minor character death, torture, canon-typical violence

Y’know that thing where WWX and LWJ calling each other by their given names is so intimate and sweet because literally no one else in either of their worlds does? Their family members who call them affectionately use courtesy names or derivatives thereof and that makes Wei Ying and Lan Zhan sound like something special, just for them.
Anyway it would be the exact opposite for Jiang Cheng since Nobody Calls Him By His Courtesy Name Ever so I think whoever you ship him with should call him Wanyin and he should get mushy about it

now as much as i love jc friendly fics, you can’t just declaw the man— it’s cute when he’s soft but that softness has to be earned, you know? i just can’t get invested when he turns into an open sap, that just isn’t who he is. he is a short tempered stinky guarded cactus made of spite and resentment and he deserves to be written as such.

Thinking a little about how in a way Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian's upbringing greatly effected how they dealt with the Wen remnants. Like Jiang Cheng was brought up in the cultivation society all his life, and while Madam Yu was not exactly good for a child's emotional health, in the end he grew up in a position of privelege, given that cultivators are treated really good by normal citizens, and Jiang Cheng would also have grown up with trust in the cultivation society and how it can handle problems efficiently. If the people in charge say they're right, even if he doesn't exactly agree, he's not that willing to act against this society that granted him priveleged, that he's been taught to trust in all his life. And yes, part of the reason he would've been unwilling to save Wen Ning/the Wen remnants is definitely due to hatred for their actions, but in the end I think this is what tipped the scale.
And then on the other hand we have Wei Wuxian. Time line in Canon is weird, but I think he's said that he's been on the streets since he was 4,and only got picked up by Jiang Fengmian at 9/10. He's spent years being a street kid, fighting dogs for food and surviving, and even if he doesn't seem as feral as say Xue Yang, there's still a part of him that simply doesn't trust authority because of this. Like, I genuinely don't think Jiang Fengmian would've been the first cultivator to be in Yiling for years. Wei Wuxian definitely would've seen how the cultivation society can be very hypocritical and high and mighty at times, and how they've lost sight of what their actual goal is, ie protect non-cultivators, and they've become arrogant. In the end, Wei Wuxian cares more about the little guys that get hurt when the big guys fight, aka the Wen remnants, because when he was a kid he was that little guy. He didn't exactly grow up with a trust in the cultivation society already instilled in him, but he did grow up to see how people can be cruel to people they consider lesser. And Madam Yu/the people who mock him for his parentage only reinforced his beliefs.
I don't know, maybe someone has already made meta about this, maybe I'll come back and extend this beyond something rambly and weird one day, but I just think it's fascinating to see how their upbringing influenced their actions.

Had an idea after reading @cerusee's post on ways wwx could find out about jiang cheng’s sacrifice, specifically their first idea about lwj and jc being trapped in a cursed cave that plays out emotionally charged memories!
Jin Ling conspires to bring his uncles together and get them to actually talk to each other - things do not go to plan.
For one, Wei Wuxian brings Lan Wangji along with him, which means he has even less reason to go near Jiang Cheng, and Jiang Cheng is going to spend the whole time glaring at Lan Wangji and not looking at Wei Wuxian!
And secondly, they get themselves separated halfway through a cave, with Jin Ling and Wei Wuxian on one side of a very solid looking wall, and Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji on the other. Which means that even if JC and WWX were starting to look slightly less tense around each other, it doesn’t matter now because if Jiang Cheng doesn’t murder Wei Wuxian’s beloved husband, Wei Wuxian’s beloved husband is going to murder him!
Whilst Jin Ling and Wei Wuxian are desperately scrambling to come up with a way through this magically appearing wall, Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji are standing on the opposite side taking very deep breaths and exploring their options with as few words as possible.
It turns out the cave is enchanted and feeds off strong emotions, in order to reap the most distress it can, it taps into its victims brains and plays out some of their most emotional memories.
For Lan Wangji, it plays out his memory of fighting off his own clan members in order to save A-Yuan, followed by his brutal punishment.
Jiang Cheng has several emotions about seeing this, most of them different flavors of self hatred - the great Hanguang Jun proving yet again how worthy he is of Wei Wuxian’s love, how he knew all along that he was worth protecting.
Shortly after that, it is Jiang Cheng’s turn, and he and Lan Wangji find themselves standing in a rainy market in Yilling, watching a much younger Jiang Cheng give himself up to the Wen in order to save an oblivious Wei Wuxian, to where he is dragged off by them to be tortured and have his core ripped out.
As soon as it’s over Jiang Cheng is up in Lan Wangji’s face telling him in no uncertain terms that he will kill him if he ever breathes a word of it to Wei Wuxian. Lan Wangji shoves him off and after a long while, Jiang Cheng pulls himself together and they go back to figuring out how to get out.
Lan Wangji would think nothing of what he had seen, except a sadness at how pale and drawn Wei Ying had looked in the vision, but for the fact that he knew it would make a huge difference for Wei Ying.
In the midst of this, Lan Wangji says “Wei Ying would want to know”. Jiang Cheng stops what he’s doing but does not turn around “What do you care?”
“About you, I do not. But Wei Ying…”
“You heard him yourself, he said to leave it in the past. He- I don’t owe him anything anymore. Let him believe what he’s always believed”
After that they work in silence, eventually working their way to freedom, and back to Jin Ling and Wei Wuxian.
After sealing up the cave to prevent anyone else falling into it’s trap, the two pairs go their separate ways with very short, tense goodbyes.
Lan Wangji does not mention what he saw for a long time, but he thinks about it often. It is not until one night, when Wei Wuxian, a little drunk (but safe and warm in their home), mentions his once-brother running back to Lotus Pier to retrieve his parents bodies, that Lan Wangji feels guilty enough that he nudges Wei Ying to sit up from where he’s sprawled over his lap.
“ Wei Ying..”
“Huh, Lan Zhan I was comf- what’s wrong?”
“Jiang Wanyin did not.”
“Didn’t what? What’s with that face, Lan Zhan, you’re making me nervous, ha.”
Lan Wangji takes a deep breath and takes Wei Ying’s hand to give himself a moment to think through his words, before looking back into his wide, worried eyes, “In the cave, it showed us his memories. Jiang Wanyin did not go back for his parents.”
He takes a moment to swallow down his anger towards the man in question, “He got captured to distract them from you.”
Wei Ying stares at him for a moment before smiling sadly and shaking his head.
Lan Wangji interrupts him as he opens his mouth to speak, “He did it deliberately, Wei Ying. I saw it.”
It takes some time for it to sink in, and when it does Wei Ying is so distressed that Lan Wangji almost regrets telling him. But after some time of Lan Wangji holding him and reminding him that Wei Ying does not owe Jiang Wanyin anything, that he did not even want him to know, and a few aborted attempts to leave and sprint his way to Yunmeng, he calms down enough for Lan Wangji to get him into bed, with the plan to leave for Yunmeng in the morning.
Lan Wangji says goodbye to Wei Ying in a town on the outskirts of Yunmeng, after flying him there, recognising that he needs to see his brother alone, but wanting to be close enough for his own peace of mind.
Wei Wuxian walks up to the gates of Lotus Pier with no plan and an emotional mixture of anger, sadness, regret and love fuelling his steps.
(Jin Ling’s plan did work…eventually!)

I find the notion that Wei Wuxian would be the one to push to mend the relationship he had with Jiang Wanyin wild, honestly. This man woke up after being dead to find out that his former sect leader was torturing and killing people that reminded JC of WWX. Yeah, nah.
Besides, their initial relationship was already broken/unhealthy. They weren't friends, in my opinion. They were friendly, but I think in both of their minds the hierarchy was very known. I do think they cared for each other at certain parts in their respective lives. But I think their relationship was a bridge that was always gonna collapse no matter what.
Being forgiving or being able to move past something better than others, doesn't mean letting that nonsense back in your life. It means I don't hold a grudge against you and I leave you in peace. People love writing Wei Wuxian with no self worth, but he knows exactly how much he's worth. I'm not sure why people like writing him as this snivelling pathetic creature, desperate for scraps of someone's attention. It's irritating.

Happy Pride! Something Untamed related please :D
a continuation of 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Jiang women are the best.
Nie Huaisang has been dropping by Lotus Pier for years, so he knows this to be true. Being engaged to either Jiang Yanli or Wei Wuxian would have been awesome, for entirely different reasons, because Jiang women also have range. If his brother really does start pushing him to get married, he's going to insist they marry in a Jiang disciple, even if the best ones are taken.
At least Jiang Cheng is appropriately appreciative of his awesome fiance. Jin Zixuan is a tragedy - engaged to Jiang Yanli and pouting about it? It makes him doubt Jin Zixuan's academic rankings.
The point is he's known that Jiang women are in a class of their own for years and watching Lan Wangji come to that conclusion himself is hilarious.
"So, your brother," Nie Huaisang says, barging into Lan Xichen's room He and Mingjue are best friends, of course he knows and is friendly with Lan Xichen.
Lan Xichen doesn't even look up from the scroll he's reading, although his lips do rise at the corners. "What about him?"
"Has he talked to you about his crush on Wei Wuxian?" he asks, collapsing on the table across from him.
Lan Xichen stills, his shoulders drawing back slightly. "Wei Wuxian is engaged to Jiang Wanyin. Wangji would never behave inappropriately."
He absolutely would, but that's not what Nie Huaisang's here about. "Relax, he hasn't done anything inappropriate." If he had, he'd be dead. He's not sure if either Wei Wuxian or Jiang Cheng could take Lan Wangji on alone, but together it's no question. "I'm just wondering if he's talked to you about it. Has he had crushes before? He's never talked to me about them."
In spite of all the time they'd been forced to spend together as kids, Lan Wangji never talks to him about anything. It would be insulting if Nie Huaisang was the type of person to let himself get insulted.
Lan Xichen ignores him for another moment before sighing and setting down the scroll. "Wangji is ... private."
That's a no, then.
"I'll talk to him," Lan Xichen says. "I wouldn't want things to get complicated. Politically."
He blinks. "Uh, if you want to, but I don't think it's an issue."
"Don't think it's an issue," Lan Xichen repeats.
He shrugs. "Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng are solid. And you know Jiang don't like to play games. If he does something to piss them off, the worse they'll do is beat him up, but they won't make an inter-clan issue over some feelings. Lan Wangji won't be the first person to flirt with Wei Wuxian and he won't be the last."
People flirt with Jiang Cheng all the time too, but that's less of an issue since he seems equally uninterested in all of it, while Wei Wuxian's general interest does exist.
"My brother doesn't flirt," Lan Xichen says, pained.
That is, unfortunately, true.
Flirting would be easy and logical and harmless, instead of this weird one sided dominance display he's having with Jiang Cheng.

For the daemons AU, the two daemons' shenanigans during the library punishment where Wei Wuxian aids and abets them while Lan Wangji gamely tries to pretend he doesn't see anything?
Lan Wangji has a shameless daemon.
He knows of no remedy for this plight, for his daemon Yuchen (Wangji’s very soul in the shape of a beast, the essence of his own inner self) no longer obeys his commands. According to her, no Lan daemon can keep itself in check in the presence of a beloved one; and since Wei Ying is evidently Wangji’s fated person, made and matched for him in every way, Yuchen sees no need to maintain proper courtesy when Wangji and Wei Ying are alone.
She refuses to ignore Wei Ying’s Qingwan, even after Lan Wangji kneels by her side and begs her to leave the impossible creature alone. Qingwan is friendly with most of the daemons—and people—that Wei Ying knows, so he has noticed nothing strange about Yuchen’s queer behavior towards him; but Wangji is afraid that Yuchen will behave familiarly with Qingwan in public if she continues thus, and then his desperate efforts to conceal his feelings will be over.
“That is my goal.” Yuchen tells him one day, not unkindly. “He likes you, does he not? Why leave the poor boy in fear that his intended hates him?”
“Wei Ying is not a Lan, so he cannot possibly think of me as his intended so early. And if you would not pounce on his daemon every time we meet in private, then perhaps he and I could begin a proper friendship!” Lan Wangji snaps. “I do not deny that I care for him—how could I deny it? It is only that your impropriety is making everything worse.”
“And yet you will say nothing of your heart to him!” sighs Yuchen. “You have forced me to this trespass, Wangji. Do you think Elder Sister would have behaved any differently if Huan-ge had tried to deny Nie Mingjue?”
“Sister Yulan has never acted against Xiongzhang’s will. And anyway, Brother was four when he and Nie Mingjue met. It is acceptable for a child’s daemon to behave inappropriately, since the child is young and knows no better. But you—”
“I am you,” Yuchen says incorrigibly. “I have done nothing to Wei Ying’s Qingwan that you have not wished to do to Wei Ying yourself a hundred times over.”
Lan Wangji chokes and bites back a scream of frustration. He has not had a screaming fit in years—not since he was three years old, when the elders discovered that he had found a way to remain with his mother by sneaking Yuchen into the Jingshi—but quarreling with one’s own spirit is the most galling thing Lan Wangji has ever endured, and Yuchen does not seem remotely likely to give up.
Nevertheless, Lan Wangji endures, avoiding Wei Ying’s company when the other boy is alone and rejoicing in it when Brother or Jiang Wanyin are at hand to keep Yuchen from disgracing herself.
But then Wei Ying is punished with lines for suggesting a new cultivation path (a dark path he called the guidao, having thought about it in sufficient detail to give it a name), and Lan Wangji is charged with the duty of supervising him.
“I cannot fulfill this responsibility,” he pleads, when Xiongzhang informs him of his new task. “Xiongzhang, please. Wangji begs to be excused.”
“Is Wei-gongzi so bothersome that you cannot even bear to be near him?” his brother asks, perplexed. “If he has been troubling you, then...”
“No! He has not been troubling me. The issue is nothing of his making, but I cannot go. It is impossible.”
At this, a light, sibilant voice speaks up from his brother’s collar.
“It is not,” Yulan rebukes him gently, lifting her scaled head from the warmth of Lan Xichen’s neck. “My meimei does not share your opinion, and since Yuchen is the heart of you, I will trust in her. Xichen, comfort our didi; but Uncle has given him a task, and the task must be fulfilled.”
Lan Xichen comforts him accordingly, fussing over Wangji until he escapes from the Hanshi with a pocketful of almond biscuits and Yuchen purring with mirth at his side.
After that, he goes straight to the library, hoping against hope that Yuchen will manage to control herself for the next shichen and a half.
But ten minutes later, Qingwan is showing Yuchen how to leap along the tops of the bookshelves without toppling them, and Wei Wuxian is laughing at the two daemons’ antics from below.
“Don’t be so angry with Yuchen,” he teases, as Lan Wangji fumes over the precepts he was copying—for since his misbehaving daemon and all her faults were an inseparable part of him, he had decided to address her lack of discipline by punishing himself for his own. “Lan Zhan, aren’t we still young? We haven’t come of age yet, and your soul is still a youth’s soul. Why shouldn’t Yuchen play?”
“If Yuchen wishes to play, there is a full mountain outdoors where she may make free as she likes,” Lan Wangji says stiffly. “She has been rebellious of late, but your daemon still obeys you. Get Qingwan to stop provoking her.”
“My daemon is obeying me! I want to play, even if you don’t, so Qingwan’s just fulfilling my desires on my behalf.”
Suddenly, Wei Ying frowns and glances over at Lan Wangji’s sheet of parchment. “Ah? Why are you copying rules, Er-gege?”
“Shameless!” Lan Wangji cries, despite himself; but on the high shelf over Wei Ying’s head, he hears Yuchen purring with glee like a cat that had been fed with the best cream. “I—I am not. I was merely practicing calligraphy. I could not think of anything else to write.”
“Aiyah, how unfortunate! You have such beautiful calligraphy, so why waste it on something so dull? Aren’t we in the library? There must be plenty of poems you can copy, Lan Zhan. Look—” and here he turns around and draws a slim volume of poetry from the shelf at his back, thumping it down onto Lan Wangji’s writing table. “This one’s by your clan founder! He must have written most of your sect precepts, right? So, copying his poetry would be just as good.”
Helpless, Lan Wangji takes the book of poetry and opens it. He cannot insist on copying the sect laws without Wei Ying growing suspicious—for his beloved is sharp-witted, sharp-witted and wise, and it is nothing short of a miracle that Lan Wangji has contrived to hide his affection for him—so he picks a verse at random and settles down to copy it out.
But as luck would have it, Wei Ying happened to pick up the book of poems dedicated to Lan An’s wife; and since Lan An had loved his wife dearly, and built a clan on the strength of that love, every verse is so sincerely sentimental that Lan Wangji feels his ears burn.
Qingtian carves me a new heart with the birth of each new dawn, Lan An had written, about twenty years after his marriage and the founding of the Lan sect. And every heart, once willed into life, is wholly devoted to her.
Lan Wangji gulps. Was this how Lan An felt, then? Had he been transformed after his wife first met him, and altered so completely that it seemed as if she had given him a new-born heart to love with?
His hand trembles as he copies the last word of the poem; and yet he cannot stop himself from turning to the next page, torn between fear and frantic joy as he imagines himself two decades hence, composing poems for Wei Ying.
Only, perhaps it would not be a poem. More likely it would be a score on the qin, for Lan Wangji has long been mediocre at all things concerning the spoken word.
As he sits there wondering what kind of melody would fit Wei Ying, he lets his zhiyin and their two daemons drift from his line of sight. It will be a sweet song, he thinks, for Wei Ying is so beautifully kind despite his brashness; and yet it would have to be bold to match his beloved’s strength.
Suddenly, a piece of paper flutters onto his lap; and when he looks down, he sees that Wei Ying had drawn a flawless portrait of him, seated with Lan An’s book of poems in his hands and a peony tucked into his hair.
It is perfect.
“What do you think he’ll say about it?” Wei Ying says to Qingwan and Yuchen, who had jumped down from the bookshelves to see what was going on. “Dull, maybe? Or boring?”
“Very dull,” Lan Wangji replies, through the hard lump in his throat.
He lays the portrait down tenderly, flat on the table to keep it from being smudged or creased, and then he returns to his book.
Vaguely, he notices that the page he was reading seems to have changed. Lan Wangji didn’t think this volume was an illustrated copy, since an injury to his right hand kept Lan An from drawing for his later compositions—but then he looks closer at the faint lines of ink, and nearly combusts on the spot.
For while Lan Wangji was busy marveling at the painting, Wei Ying had slipped a page of longyang into his book.
Lan Wangji throws the book to the ground and bolts upright, incensed. “Wei Ying!”
“I’m here! I’m here, Lan Zhan!” Wei Ying laughs, waving his lovely hands in the air—lovely despite all the mischief they bring, and how foolish Lan Wangji must be that he cannot help but think so at a time like this!
“What kind of a lawless creature are you?” he wheezes. “How dare you—?”
“What do you mean, what kind of creature? I’m a man! Don’t tell me you’ve never seen such things before.”
Lan Wangji draws Bichen from its sheath, determined to slash the offending page to shreds; but before he can bring himself to touch the thing, Yuchen bounds off the desk she was perched on and knocks Wei Ying flying.
“Help!” Wei Ying wheezes, crumpling to the ground as the leopard climbs onto his chest. “Lan Zhan, I didn’t mean it! There’s no need to turn to violence. I’ll go right now and leave you in peace! Yuchen, please—”
Yuchen opens her great white jaws and places her teeth near his neck, looking as if she were contemplating whether to bite down; but behind her, Lan Wangji can hardly stand, because his daemon is touching Wei Ying.
Wei Ying is touching his very soul, and the feeling is so raw and right that Lan Wangji falls to his knees.
“Do not do things that you do not mean,” Yuchen growls, her hot breath puffing over Wei Ying’s throat—and it is as if her breath is Wangji’s breath, warmed further by his beloved’s soft skin, drifting back to his own lips after touching Wei Ying’s. “You ought not to tease, either. And if you mean to do something, admit it. Elsewise, you will leave others in turmoil.”
Elsewise! Lan Wangji is already in turmoil, for though he is kneeling two yards away, it feels as though he has Wei Ying in his arms.
Somehow, he manages to pick up the leaf of longyang and burn it to ash with spark of his spiritual energy. Somehow, he manages to straighten his forehead ribbon and turn his writing desk the right way up again, all while his heart beats a battle-march in his bosom; for Wei Ying’s heartbeat is soft against his chest like the wings of a trapped bird, and this proof of Wei Ying’s dear life is so humbling that Lan Wangji wishes he could chase Yuchen away and kiss him.
But it is not to be, for Yuchen does not move; and before Lan Wangji can drag her back, Lan Qiren storms into the pavilion and descends upon them both with a bellow.
“Wangji!” his uncle roars, enraged. “Explain yourself! And you, Yuchen—cease touching Wei Wuxian at once!”
To Lan Wangji’s relief, Yuchen obeys, allowing Wei Ying to scramble to his feet and reach out to Shufu in supplication.
“Lan-laoshi, isn’t not what you think,” he pleads. “I was bothering Lan Zhan, and Yuchen couldn’t bear it. Don’t be angry with them.”
“Silence! My nephew knows what he has done.”
Shufu glares at him, daring Wei Ying to make another sound; and when he falls quiet, Shufu turns to Lan Wangji looking almost purple with anger.
“If things had already come to this pass, you should have spoken,” he says furiously. “If you could not control your daemon in his presence, you should have let me know! Now that such a trespass has happened once, it will surely happen again, and then where will that leave our clan? What will happen if Yuchen touches him when the two of you are not alone?”
“Laoshi, it’s not Lan Zhan’s fault—”
Lan Qiren uses the silencing spell this time instead of reprimanding Wei Ying, and his gaze does not move away from Lan Wangji. “Well?”
Lan Wangji kneels.
“The fault was mine,” he says; and even then, with his uncle’s displeasure bent upon him like a scorching ray of sunlight, he cannot help but melt at Wei Ying’s clear worry for him, and resolve to protect this mingding zhiren of his until the end of his days. “Wangji only wished to make sure that Yuchen would not disobey in public, and did not think something like this would happen so soon. If Wei Ying is willing, I will take full responsibility.”
Wei Ying is more bewildered than willing when Wangji tows him up to the Hanshi; but when he learns that Yuchen had leapt upon him in a frustrated passion, and not anger, he flushes so deeply that Lan Wangji grips his waist and pulls him close for fear that he might faint.
The two of them are married late the next spring, and being wed to his love is everything Lan Wangji could have wished for and more.

I read your zhanchengxian post and I feel the same. So Ive got a question: do you know of any fic with timeskip zhancheng where canon is substantially changed by it? I'd love to read one is why I'm asking
Hi! I am happy to know someone agrees with me! Anyway, I've not read a fic like that, sorry, but I've this habit of saving for later fics and never read them, so I've got some recs, even though I've never read these fics.
Fic (I've never read but seems zhancheng timeskip ~ canon divergent):
time waits for no one by adasinon
“Ah, Er-gege,” Wei Ying forces yet another laugh, it is breathless and helpless, and painful as always. “So inappropriate. What would Jiang Cheng say?”
Lan Zhan doesn’t recoil, or laugh. He really has changed.
“You didn’t tell us you’re injured,” Lan Zhan gently moves his arm around, dotes on Wei Ying like he cares for him the way Wei Ying wishes him to. He’s convincing, for sure, and Wei Ying tries not to pretend his delusions are coming true.
(Years ago, Wei Ying went to Lanling on his own, and died during the ambush. He returns to a changed world, where the loves of his life have seemingly been doing better without him.)
((Established Zhancheng, but we all know where this is going))
Fics set during Sunshot campaign:
Wonder of all Walkers by CoolTapes
Lan Wangji and Jiang Wanyin search for Wei Wuxian, rescue a dog, and fall in love.
Let Me Hear The Sound Your Heart Makes by Nantai
In a universe where you can hear any music your soulmate makes (be it singing or playing an instrument or just humming under your breath) Jiāng Chéng often hears his soulmates play together, but he doesn't dare join in. Because he knows Wèi Wúxiàn can't be his soulmate and Jiāng Chéng certainly won't come between him and Lán Wàngjī.
This changes when Wèi Wúxiàn goes missing during the Sunshot Campaign.
moored by fluffysocks
Lan Wangji comes over and they kiss. Lan Wangji comes over and they have tea.
Lan Wangji comes over and they talk.
It turns out that the available study materials are contradictory and unenlightening.
Fics I've read and enjoyed, that portray an interesting zhancheng dynamic during wwx's death (they don't reach canon, being set during the timeskip, but they set the mood actually)
mirror-bright scale by sugar_shoal
It's a serie! Dragon!LWJ AU, that follows canon events. At the moment there are only two fics about snippets of zhancheng moments, but it's not completed! First fic:
The Care and Keeping of Dragon Pearls by sugar_shoal
Lan Zhan's mother wore Qingheng-jun’s pearl around her neck, as big as Lan Zhan’s small fist; he stared up at it. Tints of gold shimmered in its surface, the same gold as Lan Zhan’s father’s eyes, his father’s qi. But despite the warm colors it still appeared cold to him, fastened around her neck with a chain. He touched his own smaller, paler pearl that rested in the hollow of his throat.
Lan Wangji always watches Jiang Wanyin with rapt attention. So he sees the moment of startled joy when Wanyin opens the small silver-inlaid box and realizes what it contains, the warmth that brightens his eyes. He sees when that brightness dims.
* * *
Jiang Wanyin closes the box and holds it back out to him. “Wangji,” he says, “I can’t take this from you.”
Beyond the Autumn Waters by omphalos
Two days after the first siege of the Burial Mounds, Jiang Cheng returns there to hunt for Suibian. What he finds is something completely different, but he takes it home all the same.
A found family and friendship AU that branches from canon shortly after Wei Wuxian’s death and covers the period until just before his return.
(this last one is not jgy friendly- and it's not tagged-, I don't know if it's a deal-breaker or not, but be mindful!)

💙Never Again
By:Hauntcats
Summary:
Wen Qing finds herself back in the past right when she is removing Wei Ying's core. She changes her mind and changes the future.
Or Wen Qing and Wei Ying take no prisoners.
(Not Jiang Cheng friendly - if you don't like that, please don't read it.)
Chapter:24/24
Words:67,198
Status: completed
“What if he means what he says? What if it’s not just a matter of being drunk, or unable to share his feelings properly? What if that’s how he really feels? Should I just smile and take it? I’ve done that all my life. I’ve taken his temper with a smile, his cutting comments with a laugh; I’ve taken the blame for every time he’s caused trouble or every time any other disciple did something to make Madame Yu unhappy. I’ve moulded myself to smile and joke and write it all off as though I’m made of stone and nothing bothers me, like I don’t have any emotions. During all that time, no one stopped Madame Yu’s whip. No one stopped her from punishing me for the smallest thing, until I gave up trying to please her and did what I wanted because if I was going to get punished, I might as well have fun first. Soup and meaningless attention only heal so much.” Wei Ying tried to stop himself from spilling out everything, but he couldn’t. It was like he had detached himself from his body and someone else was talking while he floated around. “When Madame Yu was willing to cut off my right hand to satisfy Wen Chao’s leech, was it right for me to think, ‘Fine, I’ll just learn how to use my left hand,’? When Jiang Cheng nearly choked me to death for saving Lan Zhan and Jin Zixuan in the cave, and I let it go because Jiang Fengmian and Madame Yu told me to take care of him even if it cost me my life, did I not have the right to be angry? I have run interference for Jiang Cheng since almost the moment we met. I have allowed myself to play the fool to pull attention from his terrible temper and social skills. I have brought him friends, teased him out of sulking, and let go of every scathing word out of his mouth. Almost every day, I have listened to him and his mother make snide comments about my parents, who I barely remember. I have avoided asking about my parents, in case it started an argument and made Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli sad. I have pretended not to hear the gossip spread throughout the cultivation world, gossip that shamed my mother and her relationship with my father. It doesn’t matter that my parents hadn’t been back to Lotus Pier for a long time before my mother got pregnant. Doesn’t matter - where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Well, sometimes, the fire is the burning resentment of the person who started the rumour. According to Madame Yu and Jiang Wanyin, I owe the Jiang sect for existing. Answer me this, honourable Sect Leaders, when you take an orphaned child into your sect, do you expect them to pay you back for feeding them, clothing them, keeping them safe, and training them? Do you expect any child of your sect or clan to do the same? Do I really owe them for this golden core that I worked for, sweated for, and took beatings for? If so, then rip it from me and give it to them because my life has no value.”

B) This is a time travel story where wei wuxian and lan wangji time travelled to the past after attack on cloud recess. Some mysterious cultivators attacked gusu lan and they wore green dress. Name of the clan is Shen I guess. @purpleorchidzz

3. Hi! I hope you all having a great day! I’m looking for 3 fics. Please help me. Thank you very much.
A) I only remember a scene where WWX had a talisma which can trace who are blood-related in the family. I remember wwx used the talisma to Jin zixuan which pointed who are his parent, his siblings. I remember the Sect leader Qin wants to kill Jin Guangshan because it pointed that his daughter is actually Jin’s. This is a time travel fic i think
B) Lan qiren and the elders want lan zhan to marry a girl even though they knew that lwj is married to wwx. Lwj forced to spends time to the girl. Because of insecurities wwx left lwj and isolated himself. After that he left his sect and went looking for wwx.

4. Tried asking, but I can’t get your ask box to load even though it doesn’t say it’s closed. I’m looking for a fic where Jiang Cheng of the future sends a very comprehensive letter back to Yu Ziyuan begging her to change the future. She goes to see Jiang Cheng at Gusu, and arrives as they’re dealing with the Waterborne Abyss. Niè Huaisang sent a fan back to his younger self, painted in his private code that says, “I was painted by Sect Leader Niè,” and calling himself a coward. Jin Zixuan ends up forming a study group with Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng, and Niè Huaisang on how to use fans as cultivation weapons. 6. Hi! I'm trying to find a fic I read that I don't remember the name of! It's a modern au, where lan zhan and lan xichen are the heads of a company and wei ying is a copier repair person (or something like that? Some kind of repairing) and lan zhan keeps filing complaints against wei ying, and lan xichen (I think they refer to him as lan huan in this fic) jokes about "someone staring at you for too long" not being a reason to file a complaint (idk if it's that exact wording tho). Lan zhan starts stocking the break room fridge with a red drink that wei ying likes, and the final scene is in an elevator and there is some kind of comment about his red tongue when they finally kiss (something like sucking the red out of his mouth or off his tongue or something?). Was slow burn and pining but not sure if it has those tags. I think it was a one shot and not that long but not sure on the exact length or chapter number. Thank you for your help! @toopunkrockforshul
FOUND! threadfic by saltyfeathers (Not Rated, 46k, WIP, WangXian, threadfic, chapters will be tagged individually) okay #6 is from saltyfeathers! it's chapter 16 of this ao3 multichap where each chap is a story. they're all amazing!

7. Hi, I am looking for a fanfic where WWX and LZ get married and or handfasted. WWX does not think he is good enough for LZ and gives him a list of 7 things and LZ was like "Mark your words" and he completes the 7 things. They handfast in a secluded area? There was maybe water near them? And they maybe got caught or spied on? @abrat4u2

8. hi!! looking for a fic i read a while ago where wwx was either resurrected or captured by the jins after nightless city. he's found years later in koi tower by jin ling who sends a letter to jiang cheng and he's eventually rescued. I think there was also a scene where wwx was forced to experiment on a dead tiger? can't find it anywhere on ao3 :,)
Sorry I don’t have the link, but this sounds a lot like a twitter thread fic I read a while ago. Some more details in case anyone recalls. WWX is kept by the Jin and blackmailed with the safety of JYL and Jin Ling. Little Jin Ling goes exploring and find WWX through a gate. WWX realizes that JGY put a curse of Jin Ling so he gives Jin Ling a letter to give to JC. Lans remove the curse and JC and LWJ rescue WWX.

10. Hey, I’m looking for a fic that I remember SO CLEARLY but can’t find?? Its multi chapter omegaverse during a war against the wens, wei wuxian is an omega that goes on to create this massive guerilla warfare faction/effort. But every time he goes into heat he goes absolutely feral and goes on a black-out killing spree. It starts with gets captured by wen chao and meets lan zhan for the first time while they’re both in captivity. Anyway lan zhan helps wuxian escape, and they both believe the other lost forever. So there’s that. I’m pretty sure wuxian gets a name/rumor about it as the red demon from yiling, something like that? Please help me find it, I’m worried the author might have taken it down, but it was so long and so good! @pisceseelie

12. I would LOVE to find this fic again: one shot, less than 10k, WWX does not come back. Guanyin Temple happens somehow but LWJ is absolutely brutal against his brother. Like, everything he said in defense of JGY was a rethread of how LWJ tried to defend WWX, and it ended with LWJ saying something like then I will do as you did and then kills JGY and walks away. It was righteous (as befits our LWJ) and totally a balm on that day you want to strangle LXC for being such a naive idiot sometimes. @mreisse

13. Hello i'm for a fic where wwx dies and everyone mourns for him (including wens in burial mounds) and everyone tried to revive him. @aycee0806
Is 13 the one where WWX died right at the cusp of immortality right around when the first seige was supposed to happen, and because of that even though he was dead his body didn't decay? So a type os glass casket/shrine was set up for him up in the Burial Mounds I think? Or is it some other fic? I know I've read at least one other fic with this vague premise, but either way I absolutely CANNOT remember the fic name either

14. I’m really hoping you can help me find this fic! It takes place during the cloud recesses study arc and lan qiren or someone uses a spell/talisman that allows the whole class to experience the pain at the moment of their death (or maybe it’s a spell gone wrong?) but the whole class gets shocked when wei ying end up experiencing getting ripped up by corpses. i also very clearly remember wei ying slamming his arm on a desk hard enough to break it while the spell is active. it’s angsty and i think the first few chapters are in lwj’s pov? it’s also on ao3 if that helps 🙏🏻 @shoalghost
NOT FOUND! To Gaze at the End by mondengel (M, 1k, LXC & LWJ, Horror)
mondengel: About #14: I forget the title and author now, but a year or two ago someone did ask to use the initial bit I wrote on tumblr as the start of a continuation, which I granted, so there is a chaptered fic out there with a rougher version of To Gaze at the End in italics at the beginning of it. That might be what they're looking for.

16. Hi mods, thanks for all you do! Fic finder request: I don't remember the rest of the plot, but WWX returns from the Burial Mounds and is using resentful energy to literally hold his body together (i.e. all the broken bones from WC/WZL dropping him in). WQ is found to fix him and she does a surgery where WWX has to pull back the resentful energy one body part at a time so she can fix it without him bleeding out. (The surgery might happen in Qinghe?)

17. Hi! I've been searching for a certain time travel Wangxian fic for a while now, and I can't find, probably cause I don't remember the name!
Basically, it starts with LW and Nie Huaisang getting into a book exchange (porn, it's very awkward at first) during LW's seclusion that leads to them getting closer and becoming friends. fast forward years later (possibly 13, I dont remember) and NH approaches LW saying that he's found a way to fix this whole mess: Time travel! LW agrees and they both get flung back to the Burial Mounds Era.
But things are a bit different. LW's body has his old scars, both the brand and the whips, but he's closer in physical age to where he should post-sunshot. This comes up later.
Anyway, LW and NH know some of the goings on that they have to prevent, but the don't have all the answers, cause the whole murder-mystery-Jin Guangyao-reveal never happened. But they do know they need to get WWX and Wens some immediate help, like money and food, as well as a better means of income than radish sales. LW, in the hopes of starting all this, creates a fake identity, dressing in simple dark clothes and using a sort of magic-glamour and large hat to obscure his face (mostly cause he thinks WWX hates him and doesn't trust him, I think) and goes to talk to WWX. He asks him to write a book about ways to help the common people deal with monsters and little cultivation things. WWX almost immediately recognizes LW, even though he can't see his face, and is struck both with immense curiosity about what has driven LW to hide and also creating this book sounds fun. So he does, and LW publishes it. He also, in disguise, visits the burial mounds a lot. WWX doesn't reveal who it is to the Wens, but he does go on about how they can trust this mysterious strange and acts very friendly and very close and Wen Qing thinks the whole thing is suspicious.
Next, NH remembers that Jin Jin accused WWX of cursing him, which led to the whole Qiongqu Path and murder of Jin Zixuan and kicked off everything else. So, they need to find who really cursed him.
LW, in disguise, asks WWX to create a curse tracker, and when asked about what kinds of curses it should work on, he specifically says the hundred holes curse.
During a couple of these disguised visits, WWX says that LW is really good with A-Yuan. LW is, obviously, missing the boy who grew up his son, but is also happy to him with his family. LW tells WWX about Sizhui, described as a child he cared for but who has returned to his family and therefore LW can't see him anymore. In another visit, (for reasons I can't remember) LW faints (gets injured??) and WWX, obviously, freaks out and demands WQ take care of the shadowing face hiding stranger. It's as she's doing that that she discovers some interesting things. Namely, a Wen brand on his chest and a fuckton of whips scars on the guys back. But all these scars are old! Like, maybe 10 years old, and so it's weird. If this was someone the Wens had tortured, his motives are not great for helping them but also, she would have definitely helped treat these wounds and she didn't! WWX promises that the stranger is trustworthy when she brings up questions, but is also professional enough to not mention a patients scars to someone unrelated.
After that, WWX finishes the curse tracker and gives it to the LW, who gives it Jin Zixun who trackes it to Su She and attacks him in the middle of a conference. LW and NH are enjoying the show and hiding the curse tracker. But! Rumors spread all the way back to Yiling, but how a Jin managed to track down the one who cursed him. Specifically the Hundred Holes curse. And WWX goes, 'wait a minute, I made a thing that did that. How did LZ know about that 2 WEEKS in advance?'
I think the last chapter, (it's unfinished) was NH and LW arranging to sneak WWX into Jing Ling's one month celebration. And WWX overhears someone who caught a glimpse of LW taking a bath remarking on all those scars. But WWX has seen LW's back, back in the Cloud Recesses, and there were no scars then. And it ends there, with WWX with some pieces and absolutely no logical way to put them together.
I have searched EVERYWHERE!! Everything I can think of!! Do you recognize it?? Could you find it?? It's a fantastic read. I love the subtle friendship of LW and NH as they try to fix the world, but not telling anyone what they're doing or why they're suddenly spending so much time together. And WWX enjoying time with LW not worrying about his cultivation getting in the way and without LW asking him to go to Gusu, but still trying to figure out why LW needs a fake identity to do it. @several-things-in-abundance

19. Hi! I looked through your warprize compilation but couldn't find the fic I was looking for. In that fanfic, Wwx and Wq make up a plan to have Wwx marry Lwj, so that they could buy some time until the sects attacked and since Lwj was the least likely to try to murder Wwx. Wwx acts distantly, but after the mid-autumn festival, they start getting closer. Some time later, Xy invades the Burial Mounds and tries to attack a-Qing, who was out and about on the middle of the night. Lwj saves her, but is almost killed while trying to do so. Wwx had been called to Baixue temple with Wq, and, when he was there and received Lwj's ask for help, he believed it was a trap from Lwj and almost didn't go back. He felt really guilty about using Lwj and almost getting him killed.
FOUND? 99% sure this one is 💖 love, in fire and blood by cicer (E, 360k, wangxian, immortal WWX, slow burn, pining, arranged marriages) XY attack is somewhere in the middle chapters I think 🤔

20. Hello! I hope you can help me find this fic. I remember it is in Outsiders pov (or OC’s POV). Wwx got kidnapped. Then wwx reveal his ruthlessness (of being yiling patriach) to his kidnappers. The OC became terrified of wwx and wishes he didn’t join the kidnappers lol. Then, when Lwj came to rescue wwx, wwx switch to a weak being. The OC was dumbfounded because the terrifying person became a fragile, weak, innocent being when Lwj came.
Thank you very much! Have a great day!

M, 48k, Wangxian
Summary: One of the fragments of Wei Wuxian's soul, splintered during the first siege of the Burial Mounds, uses the energy released by the Yin Tiger Tally and flees backwards through time to another moment where Wei Wuxian was close to death – after the fall of Lotus Pier, at the hands of Jiang Wanyin. Knowing how his first life will end, Wei Wuxian decides to hide his survival, and leave the cultivation world behind. Kay's comments: This story left me absolutely speechless, it was just so perfect! As if someone magically knew all my favourite things and wrote them into a story. It's got genius inventor Wei Wuxian, who becomes a rogue cultivator of sorts and finds his family with the Wens! It's got actual consequences from grave injuries that aren't magically healed! It's got Wen Qing being a good leader and the best sister! It's got Lan Wangji suffering the pain of loss much sooner and therefore learning his lesson sooner and holding on tight to Wei Wuxian when they meet again! It's got the sects getting what they have coming! And it's also incredibly well-written and I literally couldn't stop myself from reading it in one sitting. Excerpt: Wei Ying is too exhausted and in too much pain to deal with the rage, fear and grief. He is already overwhelmed with those feelings from the fall of Lotus Pier. He cannot process the memory or any of his emotions now. Right now, he needs to focus on healing as much as he can. The Wen will come for them soon. His golden core opened his airways and protected them while he was unconscious. He focuses the remainder of his spiritual energy on his back; he needs to stop the bleeding. He can't stay here, but he needs to be sure he won't loose too much blood or get infected through the open, weeping gashes on his back. He meditates as Jiang Cheng's breathing evens out, having finally burned through his rage and cried himself to sleep beside the broken, bloody body of his childhood companion. Once he is sure all the bleeding stopped, he slowly rolls himself into the water of the river next to them. When Jiang Cheng wakes, it will look like Wei Wuxian moved in his sleep – drowned and carried away by the river.
pov wei wuxian, canon divergence, time travel, time travel fix-it, somebody lives/not everybody dies, rogue cultivator wei wuxian, butterfly effect, no golden core transfer, no jiang cheng & wei wuxian reconciliation, not jiang cheng friendly, cultivation sect politics, demonic cultivation, sunshot campaign, wen remnants live, eventual lan wangji/wei wuxian, time travelling wei wuxian

MDZS Wangxian - Not Jiang friendly
no.5
↑Description:
One where the Golden Core transfer goes...sideways.
↑Description:
One where Wen Qing ends up in the past and fixes the future.
↑Description:
When you shine as brightly as a star, people notice. Everyone wants a worthy, loyal, and strong person by their side.
↑Description:
Jiang Cheng, Nie Huaisang and Lan Wangji decide to team up to go back in time to protect the people they love. The catch is, Jiang Cheng switch’s some characters in the array to erase Wei Wuxian from existence thinking everything will be better without him. Lan Wangji and Nie Huaisang are upset about the change but as long as Jiang Cheng has his family back alive he doesn’t care about their feelings.
↑Description:
A canon divergence where Wei Wuxian and Jiang Wanyin return to Lotus Pier before Jiang Fengmian's death and hear something shocking. As a result, Wei Wuxian's life changes completely.
↑Description:
At the age of seven, Wei Ying ran away from the Jiang Sect, broken and traumatized. He didn't expect to be rescued, especially by Taizi Dianxia and Crimson Rain themselves. Reduced to a shy, selective mute, Wei Ying still retained his sunny smile and kind heart, which endears him to everyone he meets. He may have lost his chance of being the Head Disciple for the Jiangs, but in return, he gained new parents, an entire Heavenly court of powerful aunts and uncles wrapped around his fingers, and even some Ghostly relatives as well.
↑Description:
Why did Immortal Bàoshān Sǎnrén never intervene in the affairs of the Cultivation World?
Many say it was because she was a being not of this world and couldn’t meddle with the affairs of mortals, but what if that wasn’t true.
For a thousand years a woman slept in her secluded mountain, when a whisper from the heavens awoke her from her slumber. The voice told her the injustice the Cultivation World had done to her daughter and son–in–law, they spoke of the injustice that now was about to befall on her grandson.
A punishment they had no right too.
So she left her paradise with her youngest disciple, a crystal was tucked away in her sleeve of red and black. She will show the world a story they had never heard, never dared ask. She’d show them how in the times of long ago why they feared her name.
↑Description:
Wen Chao has a different idea to punish Wei Wuxian but it turned out to be entirely different.
↑Description:
Wei Wuxian risks everything to go back, he cant loose his family again. Loosing the Wen were enough, he cant lose his husband and their children, the Lan's who he loved and who in turn learned to love him. He cant-no won't lose the people he lived for.
↑Description:
Wei Ying has always been a smart child, so when he finds himself back on the streets he was taken from, he decides to make the most of it. Even when he's half-starved, severely injured, and just thrown into the worst place he can think of, he'll come back. And god help anyone who gets in the way of his peaceful life.
