Chinese Magic Mirror (透光鏡)
The Chinese "Magic Mirror" (透光镜, tòu guāng jìng) traces back to at least the fifth century, although their existence during the Han dynasty as earliest as the second century has been claimed. The mirrors were made out of solid bronze and the front was polished so it could be used as a mirror, while the back has a design cast in the bronze, or other decoration; when sunlight or other bright light shines onto the mirror, the mirror appears to become transparent, if that light is reflected from the mirror onto a wall then the pattern on the back of the mirror is projected onto the wall.
Tumblr media
In about 800 AD, during the Tang dynasty, a book entitled Record of Ancient Mirrors described the method of crafting solid bronze mirrors with decorations, written characters, or patterns on the reverse side that could cast these in a reflection on a nearby surface as light struck the front polished side of the mirror; due to this seemingly transparent effect, they were called "light-penetration mirrors". This Tang-era book was lost over the centuries, but magic mirrors were described in the Dream Pool Essays by Shen Kuo who owned three of them as family heirlooms.

Kong Shangren, the guy who became popular at the early Qing court for writing a play that was (in part) about how sad it was that the Qing had taken over, was alive at the time glasses came to Qing via the Portuguese. He wrote this poem:
White glass from across the Western Seas Is imported through Macao: Fashioned into lenses big as coins, They encompass the eyes in a double frame. I put them on—it suddenly becomes clear; I can see the very tips of things! And read fine print by the dim-lit window Just like in my youth.
ngl, I kind of teared up.

‘Rare’ 400-Year-Old Tomb Found in China
For centuries, the pale blue doors of an imposing stone tomb remained largely shut. When archaeologists in China finally walked in, they found themselves surrounded by a “rare” and elaborate interior.
Archaeologists excavated the ancient stone tomb in Xinfu District ahead of highway construction, Shanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology said in a March 6 news release shared via a post on Weibo.
The tomb was about 400 years old, dating to the Ming dynasty, and well-preserved, archaeologists said. The roughly 83-foot-long grave was made up of a sloping passageway, main burial chamber and smaller back chamber.
The 400-year-old tomb was sealed with a stone gatehouse and set of double doors, a photo shows.
Inside the main burial chamber, archaeologists found two wooden coffins. The painted coffins were decorated with gold diamonds, leaves, flowers and other designs. Several pottery jars containing grain, oil or other liquids were also found in the room.

The final back chamber held several pieces of wooden furniture including altars, tables and chairs, the institute said. Most of the furniture was collapsed and broken, photos show.

Archaeologists also found “writing tools such as inkstones, Chinese calligraphy brush pens, and pen holders” in the back chamber, according to an article from the China Daily, a state-controlled news outlet.

Several inscriptions on the coffins and walls helped researchers identify the deceased as a man who lived between 1533 and 1588, the institute said.
Because of the tomb’s high-quality artifacts and preservation, archaeologists described the grave as “rare” and elaborate.
Tumblr media
Archaeologists have excavated over 60 tombs ahead of the highway construction projects, the institute said.
Xinfu District is in Shanxi Province and about 300 miles southwest of Beijing.

Thinking about Lan Wangji communicating with nothing but “Mn” and the only two people who can decipher his different Mn’s are Wei Wuxian and Lan Xichen.
LXC: Wangji, how is Sizhui’s training coming along?
LWJ: Mn.
LXC: You’re saying Sizhui already had an entire conversation with a spirit using his guqin at 4-years-old? What talent!
WWX: Where’d that kid run off to?
LWJ: Mn!
WWX: What’s that, Lan Zhan?? Little Jingyi fell down the well?!?!

Gongshutang Temple (公輸堂) with its unforgettable cosmological ceiling.  Just a small temple in the rural outback in Huxian County (戶縣), Shaanxi, in Qinan village (祁南村). The locals even barely remember its name.
The Gongshutang Temple, originally called Yuanyuantang (源遠堂), also known as Wanfotang (萬佛堂) was built in the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty, facing south from the north. It was erected by the followers of the “Baiyang Sanhui” (白陽三會) movement to commemorate their legendary ancestor-founder Lu Ban (魯班).
From the very beginning, Gongshutang was a large-scale temple complex. Nowadays only the main hall exists with a building area of 106 square meters. Referring to the folk religion, the temple is conceived to worship the amalgam of the Taoist and Buddhist pantheons.

Qing dynasty jian, owned by Feng Zicai (馮子才), a man who began his martial career as a bandit from Guangxi and rose to the rank of general in the Imperial Army.
It is curious that he was never a scholar, but he used jian. This is not an army sword as well, the Qing military wore sabers.

The Four Cardinal Principles
The Four Cardinal Principles are a set of Legalist, and later Confucian (Ruism), foundational principles of morality referred to as the fundamental principles of conduct, or four social bonds. The Four Cardinal Principles are propriety (禮), righteousness (義), integrity (廉) and shame (恥).
They are derived from the Legalist text Guanzi attributed to the Qi philosopher Guan Zhong, although it is unlikely he was the actual author.
Tumblr media
The Four Cardinal Principles can be understood as the following:
Lǐ (禮) - the rites and rituals, referring to the major Confucian duties such as ancestor worship and familial duties including all manner of ritualised cultural life in order to shape one's thinking and reinforce moral character.
Yì (義) - righteousness, refering to both correct conduct and the rejection of improper behaviour and dishonour including filial piety and correct social order.
Lián (廉) - integrity, referring to always being 'upright' in one's behaviour.
Chǐ (恥) - shame, referring to the appropriate response one should feel towards inappropriate behaviour; it is considered one of the means by which individuals judge right from wrong allowing for self-improvement. In some renderings of the principles the concept of chi is replaced with honour (耻).
