Now here is a Jim Sullivan review of a show that I did get to attend!

Just two months after sulking over not getting to see The Chills, I headed to the Orpheum Theater to see The Church. While my tastes had veered ever indie-er since my discovery of the band via their 1988 album Starfish, I was still excited to see them live again. After all, The Church had been my very first rock club gig, at Providence, RI club The Living Room in the fall of 1988.

Touring in support of their latest album, Gold Afternoon Fix, the band apparently “brought most everything up to the strata of moody metal,” with “a guitar blitz” by guitarists Marty Willson-Piper and Peter Koppes that Sullivan claimed might be “the best post-punk guitar duo since Television’s Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd.” Look, I still love The Church, but I don’t think I’d go quite that far.

But 17-year-old me would’ve scratched her head at the Television reference anyway. I was still another six months or so from getting my mind blown by Marquee Moon, even though I’d seen Tom Verlaine open for Peter Murphy at that same venue two years prior. My verdict then about Mr. Verlaine’s set? According to my diary: Booo-ring!

Good Enough.. Oh my god.. There were a handful of songs last night that got me really really emotional. I tried not to cry but her lyrics hit me so hard and I grew up inspired not just by her stunning voice, but by her strength and her stories and her beautiful words. Uhg. This on got me!
