I don’t think any comparison between Robins is going to be completely accurate unless you take into account the context surrounding characters, because it has made a huge difference in what opportunities the characters are given creatively and how they’re perceived.

Jason Todd got writers who hated him and hated the very concept of Robin. Tim Drake got writers who loved him and appreciated the role of Robin in Batman stories. Even without considering all the other factors (like Tim’s far more ideal timing in regards to continuity reboots), this is hugely impactful as to why Tim is traditionally considered a better Robin than Jason.

I mean this very literally: It’s hard to be a good Robin when even your writer wants you to be a bad one so he can kill you.

In regards to Damian, it is also a not insignificant factor that he was the first Robin introduced as a multiracial character. And DC had gotten a secure handle on the Robin legacy by that point, so they took more risks with Damian’s character than they did with Tim’s (who was very much meant to be the safe, ideal Robin after the mess with Jason). Damian also got writers who were disadvantageous to him. Damian’s more hostile introduction is wrapped up in all those factors. Edit: folks had great additions to the Damian situation as well.

Not that you can’t get anything interesting out of just comparing the Robins by parts of their characterization or backstories, but there’s a lot of things that go into the differences between the Robins and why people compare them the way they do.

Reverse Clone AU

So, I've seen a couple stories where Danny is Damian's clone. How about we reverse it?

Danny was born Damian Al Ghul, being raised to be an assassin since he could walk. However, he had a good heart, and eventually his mother overstepped around him (maybe she killed one of his favorite caretakers? Maybe he saw her killing someone with a loving family?), causing him to decide to leave the League next time they let him outside.

He was discovered by the Fentons, got adopted, and had his name changed from Damian Al Ghul into Daniel 'Danny' Fenton. Over the years, his time in the League slowly faded from memory, only remembering that one moment that drove him from them.

Talia, meanwhile, tried to create another baby, but found she didn't have any more DNA from Bruce. However, she did have plenty of Damian/Danny's DNA, so she decided to simply clone her son, making sure that this one would never get it in his head to run away. She decided to let the memory of her first son go, completely overriding it with the new Damian, as if he had been the first son and not merely some clone, forcing everyone in the League to keep the fact a secret.

So, things continue on, Danny becomes Phantom, Damian becomes Robin, so on and so forth. Eventually, one of the Batclan stumble upon Danny and take an interest in him once they realize he looks like Damian.

They actually don't think that he's a clone, because he's older than Damian and records show him having a history older than Damian, so they believe that Talia had another child, which Damian is already a little salty about, because it means that his status as the heir of the League and potentially his title as the only blood son of batman are completely meaningless.

Unfortunately, their investigations lead to the League figuring out where Danny is, at which point Talia drops by and decides to reveal in front of everyone that Danny is the original Damian and Damian is a clone meant to take his place.

The only one who takes it well is Danny, who tells everyone to get off his porch before he activates the home defense systems because he does not care for this drama.

I've been thinking about how much I actually dislike Damian becoming Batman as an adult and how I think it would be way more impactful for his character if he broke away from both of his parents and formed his own identity, which led me to "Well, who should become Batman then?" and well. What if nobody becomes Batman after Bruce steps down. The family carry on his mission, his message, but not his title, because Bruce helped them become something else, helped them become better than him. The goal was never to become the next Batman, it was for them to grow and learn and become their own people. Batman never dies, he is an eternal symbol, but one that they all wear instead of physically inhabit. I think as Bruce ages he should realise that Gotham doesn't need Batman, because now it has so much more than just Batman.

I've been binging Batman Beyond recently (Terry ily so much) and thought about how- bc of the JLU twist which I think isn't even canon to the comics BB verse but shhh bare with me- he'd technically be Damian's half brother??? You know what piece of fanon irks me? The idea that Dick resents Jason and Tim for being Robin or that Damian is the only Robin that Dick gave his approval to.

This is the first issue we see Nightwing and Jason Todd's Robin together it's 18 months after Bruce fired Dick (because he got hurt and cus Bruce though he was gonna leave the nest anyways it's a thing). Dick gave Jason his approval, he was mad at BRUCE for lack of communication and being Bruce but it never carried over to Jason.

And in A Lonely Place of Dying Dick

Takes Tim to the suit basically goes "I can't be Robin. ME, I, DICK GRAYSON can no longer be Robin. Robin is a teen about *put a hand at Tim height* this tall, black hair, good at acrobatics, not afraid to tell Batman off, and a good detective, maybe he even found out Batman and Robins identities. That is Robin, but I am Nightwing not Robin. Yep. A Robin needs to be all those things. Now I'm off to save Batman!" then later looks on fondly as Tim pleads his case to Batman, backs him up, and thinks that Bruce needs to think with his heart not head and take on a new Robin. It's not explicitly written out in the text but all of this is Dick giving Tim permission to be Robin.

TL:DR: DICK GAVE ALL THE ROBINS HIS APPROVAL NOT JUST DAMIAN!

The problem with the “child soldiers” argument against having child heroes is that having all the main characters in the superhero genre be adults would be boring, and also, fiction is the place where young people can fight dragons and I think that’s an important part of storytelling actually.

As I've seen quoted before, come get your angst juice:

Tim loved being Robin. He got to be a hero (the exact same mantle of his favorite heroes, Robin I and II). He treasured all that Robin was: the goofy colors, the quips, the ability to defeat those with powers when he had none, flying through Gotham's skyline, and solving cases. He centered his entire life, his entire being, around that title. There was no before and after for Tim. It's all he's ever known.

To be able to wear that R upon his own chest? He worked so damn hard. He had to peel his exhausted body off of the training mat again and again. He had to beg a grown man, Bruce, to keep living. He had to force his way into the Manor again and again when he was turned away. He stole Robin, literally nabbed the suit right out of the case, in order to fly.

He was even sent to another country, sent away by his mentor (his hero), to train. He faced off against King Snake and Lady Shiva alone!

He passed every test (even that damned 16th birthday one), every expectation, and every demand of his role.

Yet, he never actually wanted the cape. Being Robin was never about Tim. It was always about everyone else.

That is why, when Jason ripped the R from his chest, the pain felt more physical than the wounds he was given. That is why, when Stephanie briefly flew in his uniform, his emotions exploded upon each other. That is why, when Damian pranced into the room in those colors with the backing of Dick, Tim felt his world collapsing.

It is why, even though he was supposed to have given up Robin (like his predecessors did), he still calls himself Red Robin.

The mantle gave him freedom, training, and joy. He barely survived to adulthood, but it kept him going loss after loss. It was, and still is, everything to Tim. He's Robin because he's needed. He can do so much good for so many people as Robin (more than he thought Timothy Drake could do).

For Tim, being Robin is for anyone else but himself. This is why its suffocating vice grip will never truly let him go.
