AIRhand Inflatable Hand and Arm (2011) by Annan Mozeika and team, iRobot, Bedford, MA. This soft robotic hand and arm is based on a spacesuit design. The anthropomorphic hand is a two layered inflatable structure, with an outer nylon fabric glove containing an inflatable inner liner. Once the interior liner is inflated with air, the fingers and wrist are actuated by wire tendons, with the inflated finger acting as a return spring. Inflatable robots are cheap to build and, like this robot, can be assembled on a sewing machine.

This is it folks. Perhaps one of the best pieces of art I’ve ever requested to have commissioned done by the fantastic @/finn_ette over on Twitter and posted here with their permission. I cannot thank them enough for it. Because this is the cover for the latest arc of Rediscovered Frontiers. One that I had envisioned in my head for a while and needed the right artist to bring to life.

This… is the RETURN TO NEW MOBOTROPOLIS arc.

It’s been a long time coming. Now Sally Acorn, Julie-Su, Tangle the Lemur, and Nicole the Holo-Lynx must either face the past to find a better future… or allow it to break them.

Rediscovered Frontiers is a Sonic the Hedgehog fanfic whose main premise is that the IDW continuity is the Post-Super Genesis Wave reality from the Archie Comics. Nicole’s PDA was found by Tangle the Lemur and Whisper the Wolf, and together they managed to free Sally from Eggman’s control. Now, these remnants of a past world must join with friends both new and old to explore this new world and uncover the secret histories of Earth… and Mobius.

Armatron 2364 (Super Armatron, Armatron II, ROBO I) by Tomy, Japan (1984). Made by Tomy and distributed by Radio Shack, the Armatron resembles an industrial robot arm. It’s entirely electro-mechanical in construction, and while not programmable, it can be manipulated directly via two joysticks. The robot has a single electric motor and moving the joysticks engages different sets of gears to control the arm movement. The arm has six degrees of freedom: wrist rotation and vertical wrist flexing, horizontal elbow bending, shoulder rotation and elevation, and the the two-fingered end-effector can be opened and closed. Later models differ only in colour and the decals provided.
