Major takeaways from the biography of Mary Wollstonecraft and Mary Shelley: 

Women supported their households/families financially much more often than we are led to believe; they just had no legal claim to the money they earned and managed if they were married. Both Marys did this from their adolescence to their deaths.

The degree to which people, mostly men (especially Wollstonecraft’s own husband), simply lied about both of these women during their lives and after their deaths is stunning and did immeasurable harm to their reputations for almost two centuries. 

The main reason we even have access to these women’s literary achievements or any real biographical understanding of them is second-wave feminists taking a renewed interest in their work. Even suffragists and other early feminists distanced themselves from them (because of the PR hit job men had done to their reputations and writing).

Men who adamantly proclaim that Free Love is one of their core tenets are to be distrusted at all times (this isn’t news lol).

The malicious trend of accusing feminist women of “hypocrisy” if they can’t make literally every aspect of their lives politically pure (spoiler: no one can do that) has existed forever. Many of both women’s own supposed political and personal allies did this to them constantly. 

If you’re going to get super into boats, you should probably learn to swim @ Percy Bysshe Shelley.
