#same goes for WWX of course!

I don’t know your opinion on bottom lwj (maybe you like it or have no problem with it) I personally hate it with a burning passion, not even from fetishized point of view. But because it literally goes against how the character is in canon. Regardless, I usually just block that tag in ao3, but now i come back to tumblr after not logging in like almost a year and one of the first things i see is a freaking fan art of JC supposedly doing LWJ (is not shown explicitly) and WWX looking and being supportive and i just wanted to throw up. Literally felt like someone hit me with a pokemon psychic attack, i of course blocked the account and the bottom lwj tag here (something I didn’t even think i had to do) but i still can’t erase that image out of my brain so i had to rant to someone. Since you seem like someone really nice and you’re always amazing when answering asks here i am. If this ask makes you uncomfortable please feel completely free to delete it and forget it.
Hello Anon!
Aww, well thank you 😙 that's very sweet of you to say.
So firstly, before I tell you my opinion - I actually know the image you are referring to and I did the exact same thing when the post assaulted my eyes. I mean, everyone has their ships but come on! WX and JC?! No thanks.
As for your question, I have no majorly strong opinion on bottomji. I have read a few fanfics that have worked out alright. Mostly YLLZ era WWX meets extremely horny and willing 'self-sacrificing' virgin LWJ 'taking one for the team' - which were quite funny. But overall I do find it a little strange, because by making LWJ 'bottomji' people tend to make WX somewhat out of character one way or the other.
The reason I do not have a particularly strong opinion on LWJ being the bottom, is because it's kind of implied in the extras that they may well have done such things during their very active and passionate sex life already.
Seeing that he’d nearly hit his limit, Wei Wuxian laughed heartily and kissed his lips. “Er-gege, what haven’t we done? Why are you still so shy?”
7S translations - From Dawn Till Dusk extra
To me, the above certainly implies they've done a lot more than we have witnessed and switching would certainly come into that.
Also, I actually think LWJ would do anything for WWX, if he should ask. Including switching things up every now and then if his dear husband wished.
Overall, I don't think LWJ switching positions on occasion is necessarily out of character, if done properly and the fanfic authors stay true to how the characters actually are and would react during such acts. For example, LWJ still being the more dominant one out of the pair. Just because he's bottoming doesn't mean he's suddenly going to be submissive.
That being said, the image you and I saw is of course just completely out of character! JC is homophobic for a start! It just wouldn't happen. Ever. Even if JC was interested in some strange alternative universe. WX just wouldn't! I'm also convinced that WX would not want to, nor be willing to engage in sex with anyone else, even a threesome or some voyeuristic partner swap - or whatever the hell that image was?!
Wangxian are too wrapped up in each other, too completely obsessed with each other for anything else. Not to mention LWJ would drink so much vinegar he would pickle! And I don't think WWX would fare much better, LWJ is his and I don't think he'd be willing to share either!
I can understand why you might find it a bit odd seeing the roles switched around, but I do think it's something that could possibly be an occasional occurrence in canon because of the lines I mentioned above. Though I do love their dynamic in the novel and that is definitely what I prefer. Overall, we all have different preferences and opinions I guess ☺️
Finally, my dear anon...please go and read your favourite fanfic or browse through some gorgeous Wangxian art to cleanse yourself of the image which assaulted your senses. It's what I did and I feel much better now lol!
Hope you have a lovely day 🥰

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed, Episode 39 Part 3
(Masterpost) (Pinboard)  (whole thing on AO3)
Tumblr media
Warning! Spoilers for All 50 Episodes!
Days of Future Past
After they leave Yi City, the gang comes to a proper town where there is a lantern festival going on, or else it's just a town that is really nuts about lanterns.
The juniors go shopping, looking at random trinkets, cell-phone cases, sunglasses, and electric toys that will break as soon as you get them home. Wait, that's my local mall I'm thinking of. But it's the same idea, pretty much.
Tumblr media
Judging by the dream catchers hanging up on the right, this particular Ancient-China kiosk is owned by a traveling Ojibwe person.
Sizhui experiences a callback to symbolism from the past as he looks at an array of toy insects.
Tumblr media
Jin Ling toy shames him, and Lan Jingyi comes to his defense.
Tumblr media
Toys are for every age, people. Even if you outgrow one style of play, there's a lot of ways to enjoy toys, including tucking them in your robe and pulling them out to look at them whenever you have a memory cascade.
Tumblr media
When Sizhui was young, he looked at toys with Wei Wuxian. Wei Wuxian didn't give him the toys, however, because "asking is asking, buying is buying." For Wei Wuxian, there was always a vast chasm between what he wanted and what he could actually have. Lan Wangji, of course, promptly gave A-Yuan toys, including a version of this grass butterfly.
The last time we saw A-Yuan with the butterfly is the last time A-Yuan saw Wei Wuxian. WWX frightened him and he dropped his butterfly, and everything went to shit after that. So I think it's fair to say the butterfly symbolizes some stuff.
(More after the cut!)
Jingyi points out to Sizhui that they have all of this same stuff at home in Gusu, which is what happens in a franchise-based retail economy.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian enter the market together, but Wei Wuxian quickly runs ahead, enjoying the energy and the sights. Grown-up Lan Wangji, unlike his younger self, seems perfectly comfortable in this crowded and busy environment.
Lan Wangji pauses at a seller's stall to experience his own callback to the past, as he contemplates a lantern with rabbits on it.
Tumblr media
Here the show the show restrains itself and does not show us a flashback to the rabbit lantern of the past. That's ok, though; the first lantern scene is one of the most memorable in the show, so we can just replay it in our heads.
Back then, Wei Wuxian made a special lantern for Lan Wangji, and they released it together. That was the first time we saw Lan Wangji smile, and it's also when Wei Wuxian's pledge of chivalry turned their mutual interest/attraction into something much deeper.
Tumblr media
While Lan Wangji and Lan Sizhui are contemplating lost things from the past (sky lanterns, by their nature, are losses, but in a nice way), Wei Wuxian is confronting one of his own losses.
Tumblr media
He sees a little kid running to a vendor, and his mind's eye sees A-Yuan.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji sees Wei Wuxian's reaction to the child, and he stops looking at the lantern to watch Wei Wuxian instead.
Tumblr media
When Wei Wuxian realizes that the child is not, in fact, A-Yuan, the air goes out of him.
Tumblr media
Is it too cruel of me to point out that while Wei Wuxian's heart is breaking from realizing that A-Yuan could not possibly be shopping for toys in this market, the real A-Yuan, Lan Sizhui, actually is shopping for toys in this market?
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian allows himself to feel things, for a moment--and when he turns around and sees Lan Wangji watching him, he doesn't immediately paste a fake smile onto his face, which is some kind of relationship growth.
Lan Wangji takes this opportunity to say "hey, Wei Ying, I forgot to mention that A-Yuan isn't dead."
Tumblr media
Ha ha ha ha ha of course he doesn't say that. He's waiting for the right moment to share this information, and Lan Wangji has no idea what constitutes a right moment for verbalizing anything. If he can't use his sword to communicate his devotion or his disappointment, he's in a pickle.
Also, Lan Wangji is aware of the popular Wuxia trope of "lone survivor of a massacred clan grows up to seek revenge," and the rules say you can't reveal the survivor's identity until they have gotten a job as the bodyguard and/or concubine of their enemy's innocent heir. Sizhui has made a good start by befriending Jin Ling, but he's not showing much inclination to revenge, so Lan Wangji is stuck for now.
Like a Lantern in the Dark
Tumblr media
When Wei Wuxian sees the lantern next to Lan Wangji, he breaks into a genuine, sunny smile, and runs up to very gently tease LWJ about it.
Like a lantern in the dark, Follow on now, follow your heart
Tumblr media
Back then the lantern had a single rabbit, and was a gift from Wei Wuxian. Lan Wangji said he's used to doing things alone, and Wei Wuxian said that he can change. This rabbit lantern has two rabbits, and is about to be a gift from Lan Wangji to Wei Wuxian. Because Lan Wangji has changed.
Tumblr media
"Lan Zhan, let's buy it"
Wei Wuxian has also changed. He asks for what he wants, instead of just wishing, and is delighted when Lan Wangji gives it to him. The lantern, people. Lan Wangji gives the lantern to him.
They take the lantern together, walk with it together, and immediately give it to (their son) Sizhui, telling him to take good care of it. Sizhui is confused but Jingyi knows what's up. Look how happy he is that his favorite teacher has a boyfriend.
Tumblr media
I'm pretty sure ceremonial lantern-giving is going to be incorporated into Gusu weddings from now on, at least weddings where there is already a kid who needs a special role in the ceremony.
Brotherly
The kids tell Lan Wangji that Zewu-Jun is here to see him, and Lan Wangji makes this face:
Tumblr media
Holy fuck, what is going on between the Lan brothers? It occurs to me that we haven't seen them together since Wei Wuxian came back to life. They were close, in the before times, but 33 lashes and 3 years of forced seclusion might have changed things.
Wei Wuxian gets back into his mask, and they go and show the sword spirit to Lan Xichen. Lan Xichen...absorbs it...into his body? What is actually happening here?
Tumblr media
I mean, it looks cool, but that can't be healthy.
Now that Nie Mingjue's body has been - mostly - found, his fears are confirmed. He says that Nie Mingjue qi-deviated in public and "all his veins were broken," which I'm pretty sure should actually be translated "all his meridians were broken." Meridians are what carry your qi around your body. After that happened, nobody knew what happened to him and/or his body.
Tumblr media
So he's sad about this, but not shocked. I feel like Lan Xichen maybe could have tried harder to find out what happened, but he never was as stubborn as Lan Wangji.
You Don't Know Him Like I Do
Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji point out that Jin Guangyao is the obvious suspect in the current situation, but Lan Xichen doesn't want to hear it; he literally turns his back on them while he explains all the reasons Jin Guangyao couldn't be the person who's in control of the Yin tiger seal.
Lan Wangji is hard to read in this conversation; he lets Wei Wuxian do the talking. But he seems deeply suspicious of Jin Guangyao, and is maybe kinda resigned to his brother refusing to hear him.
Tumblr media
I wonder how many sketchy things Lan Xichen has forgiven, over the years? How many does Lan Wangji know about?
Tumblr media
"He wouldn't do that"
Lan Xichen's statement here is a direct parallel to Lan Wangji's statement way back in epsiode 21, which is the last time we saw the brothers talking about anything besides battle strategy.
Back then, Lan Xichen asked about the deaths at the supervisory office - you know, all those people who killed themselves in horrible ways and/or were killed by vengeful spirits. He wanted to know if WWX killed them using Yin Iron. Lan Wangji said nope, not my sweetie, he sure didn't.
Tumblr media
"He wouldn't do anything like that."
Same framing, same camera angle, same blocking. Same message: the one I love would not do bad things using Yin iron. But - here's the thing - Lan Wangji was flat-out lying in that earlier conversation. He saw Wei Wuxian doing forbidden stuff and got in a huge-ass fight with him about it, only to deny it to his brother.
Parallels being what they are in this show, I think this is a strong suggestion that Lan Xichen is knowingly lying in the current conversation.
If we look back at that previous conversation, when Lan Wangji asked Lan Xichen "how can we understand someone's heart?" Lan Xichen gave a surprising answer.
"When looking at someone, you[...]shouldn't use a clear right or wrong, black or white to judge them. What matters is what their heart believes in."
Tumblr media
When this conversation happened, it seemed that he was giving Lan Wangji advice about his Wei Wuxian situation, but in retrospect, I think he was thinking about Meng Yao, who had recently murdered a guy and defected to the Wen clan.
In the present moment, I think Lan Xichen knows that Jin Guangyao is sketchy, but he also believes there are some lines his friend won't cross. (He doesn't know yet about the fratricide, patricide, and filicide, or the massacre of the sex workers in the brothel where JGY grew up.) I don't think any of these guys really believes that "Yin iron" is one of those uncrossable lines.
Tumblr media
The conversation is interrupted by the juniors having a loud argument inside about whether Wei Wuxian is The Worst, or merely bad. Lan Sizhui started this by very very mildly defending demonic cultivators. Jin Ling is super upset, because of the whole "Wei Wuxian killed my dad" and "Uncle Jiang Cheng frequently reminds me to kill people like Wei Wuxian and feed them to my dog" situation.
Lan Wangji immediately drops the important conversation he is having to go inside and deal with the more important problem of a child talking shit about his boyfriend.
Tumblr media
Busted
The moment that Lan Wangji goes inside, Lan Xichen addresses Wei Wuxian by name, letting him know that he's recognized him. Watching him fondle his untouchable didi's shoulder might have been a clue. Wei Wuxian is alarmed but makes a quick recovery.
Tumblr media
Lan Xichen is surprisingly kind to Wei Wuxian at the same time as being extremely extremely wary of him. He's not pleased to see him, and Wei Wuxian's 1000 watt smile and apparently genuine pleasure in greeting him properly receives a chilly response.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian gently asks Lan Xichen to think about what they've discussed, but he doesn't press. He gives him time and space to think. In a way, Wei Wuxian is better at handling Lan Xichen than Lan Wangji is; Lan Wangji's stubbornness makes him inclined to push. Wei Wuxian is better at fitting his tactics to the situation.
He says his bit and then leaves Lan Xichen to think things over in peace.

yuguyao content is truly the gift that keeps on giving. this fandom is keeping us busy with updates from both sides, but that doesn’t mean we will forget the sweets!
Tumblr media
this is part four. enjoy ^^
An incident that got lots of attention with cpfs, because XZ mentioned CQL in the interview. and that was because it was asked how may times he had filmed in hengdian and so he mentioned all the projects. which included cql. I must admit that it was nice hearing it from him again. 💕 not exactly proof of whatever cause we know he loves cql and wwx. It would be out of character if he leaves it out.
Tumblr media
but of course some entertainment accounts will twist this cause apparently, we’re not the only ones “not over” CQL and their association. It’s all BS. We all know WYB’s change in Weibo has nothing to do with “contempt” for CQL.
Let me just enjoy the parallels i see popping out and the continued Shiying x LWJ examples 😌
My absolute favorite tho and what people have been interpreting is this “mindset” that he has which is similar to WYB. You may think that this applies to both life in general or romance. The answer he gave to the question in the tencent video ruxi interview in particular. How it compares to his 2019 answer about a similar question. He is still the same stubborn XZ!
2019: "For what he thinks is right, and for the people he loves, he can work hard regardless of everything" "This is also the person I want to be."
2021: (Knowing the established destiny, will I still choose the same)" I'd love to say I will. " " But it's going to be hard work, but I'm still doing it."
So the connection people are getting at is, in the story of YGY, he knows that Zhu Yan will be the one that kills him but he still goes and falls for her. That’s just the kind of person that he is irl too isn’t it? Not saying that WYB is his Zhu Yan but the same theme as loving someone ( everyone says ) you shouldn’t. If you believe in SZD, you have to admit that ZZ can have anyone he wants. He can choose the easy route and just let go of WYB but he didn’t. They are both committed to each other and continue to stay in love despite all the noise. Same goes with WYB, how he said, “ love is like this. you can’t help it” . It’s like they don’t care what people say their “fate” will be, loving each other is a conscious choice.
They are both logical people when it comes to life and their career but when it comes to love — they really follow their heart.
The same persistence even when things get tough is a trait they both have. This is why they still continue to be relevant years after CQL.
I found this comment on one of the posts and I wanna scream cause it’s true. I’m sure that if asked, ZZ will say yes. Didn’t he say that if can re-shoot CQL, he will do all the scenes again? 😌
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m also cackling at this part cause he now knows what it feels like to play that cold character like LWJ.
One of my feelings at the time was that you must not play him as a face, because the truth is that I really don’t want to play this kind of cold character. Most of them don’t have too many expressions. What is conveyed in front of the camera will make the audience feel like a person with facial paralysis. The audience won't believe it.
Which is the exact same fear WYB had to the point that he panics in some scenes cause what can he do when he can’t show much expressions. I’m here clowning about them talking about ZZ should play Shiying, probably WYB giving him tips. Do you think ZZ rewatched CQL and watched his Lan Zhan? LOL. I imagine WYB will get jealous 😂😂😂😂
Shi ying’s animal form also has a mole under it’s lip and yes it has always been ZZ’s “thing” even before WYB met him. However i think that WYB was the one who really put emphasis on it and add the heart with a mole onto that. Especially the “.” that XZ even started adding to his art signature.

any mdzs thoughts for previous jobs u have held for an au? (badly worded ask for the specific au ask game)
Private University AU:
Lan Xichen is an art history professor as well as the Dean's nephew, and he relly wanted to be an artist fulltime but his family never allowed him to entertain the possibility. Now he paints and does little solo exhibitions as a side gig, but he does not have nearly enough time to dedicate to them and he is almost... embarrassed about doing art halfheartedly, or so he sees it. Fortunately, he likes people though his feelings on teaching are simply neutral. Also, he can see Meng Yao every day... he tries to stay positive!
Lan Wangji doesn't want to be a professor, and fully expected nobody to sign up for his music theory classes because, for the most part, he does not speak - he puts his slides up on the projector and then plays the music in question. He is both shocked and strangely pleased when students consistently show up - not many, but the same little group every time. He overhears in the corridor that they think he is "the coolest".
Wei Wuxian works at the university cafe. LWJ finds it infuriating that he has no interest in pursuing a PhD, because Wei Ying's thesis on the psychology of music changed his life. (the big reveal is that WWX is still working on his research, just on his own time and using uni credentials to access the library and borrow sources because they never revoked his student account). The university cafe is open to the public as well, and some kids from the nearby elementary school wander in sometimes because WWX gives them whatever pastries are left.
Meng Yao is an assistant language teacher working for a multinational dispatch company. He works part time, but spends pretty much his entire day at uni prepping materials and doing his own research. Lan Xichen makes a point to invite him to eat in the student cafeteria with him every day (the first time he asked, he mentioned taking him to a restaurant right outside campus where he often eats, but Meng Yao looked terrified at the prospect of leaving campus even for 30 minutes, so LXC course corrected!) JGS keeps saying the family visa will come through eventually, but in the meantime he needs to get by on a provisionary work visa which means he literally cannot quit his job at the dispatch company or he will be deported. Lan Xichen doesn't know this, and thank god, because otherwise he would immediately offer to marry him for a spouse visa and things would get even more awkward.
Nie Huaisang has been a student for six years and still hasn't finished his bachelor's degree. In fairness, it's because NMJ chose it for him and would not allow him to switch majors! NHS's idea of passive resistance is to do the bare minimum to stay in uni, but waste as much time (and money) as possible in doing so. He spends all of his time in the cafeteria playing geocaching games and swiping dating apps without doing anything about it. Sometimes he goes to classes that are entirely unrelated to his studies (like Lan Xichen's) just to hide away and people-watch, and because he knows LXC would never rat him out. Also he may be writing rpf of LXC and Meng Yao because he sucks. ;)

It never ceases to baffle me how the fandom can use a certain logic to achieve one desired conclusion (see: MXTX wouldn't make an openly gay character in a homophobic world a harasser, so MXY hasn't actually harassed JGY) even if it goes against the text itself (MXY admitting in his diaries that he has harassed fellow Jin disciples) while the same logic doesn't work for them the other way around in the favor of the character they don't like (while MXTX would not do the aforementioned case, she would, however, make the character that is the son of a sex worker, and continuously discriminated against, considered dirty, belittled and ridiculed for it throughout the story a groomer who led a teenager MXY on so he could later accuse him of harassment) while this too, goes against the text (again, MXY admitting he has harassed someone in his diaries (he might have very well mentioned Jiggy in his diaries but not as Jin Guangyao, or Lianfang-Zun, Sect leader, or Xiandu or anything that WWX would know. but with the name MXY would call his older brother. maybe "ge" or something. then, if he had mentioned him in an inappropriate way, WWX wouldn't have made the connection that MXY was talking about his real brother), the text offering nothing to prove the contrary, JGY most likely wanting to avoid any rumors that would relate him to incest, the text going out of its way to give us info about JGY's nonexistent sex life in 3 different occasions, even though we had no business knowing about it, the first mention being literally in his introduction, when it's said that he's known for being extremely loyal to his wife, unlike other men in his position (showing us that he's traumatized by his father's behavior and would never repeat it), then at the Guanyin temple when he says that he's never touched QS after finding out the truth (if he's loyal to Qin Su, and hasn't touched QS for more than a decade, then by now he's essentially reset to factory settings and is a virgin again), then when his mother is offended again and Xue Yang offers that he should fuck the offenders' moms and JGY says that he's not in such habits and Xue Yang confirms that yes, that's not JGY's ways. Even when they're being openly villainous and have nothing to hide from each other. and I don't think it would be too much of a reach to think that a teenager in a brothel who looks notably like his mom and would be considered a "pretty boy" in ancient times with no child services would not be a stranger to nasty looks from grown men and thus would have trauma related to grooming.)
of course, the logic is flawed in general. Because MXY has allegedly committed harassment in one form or another and JGY did force a group of sex workers to rape his father to death, and then to continue even after his death, and then killed them all. Because the cycle of violence is one of the recurring themes in the book. And is broken by only a handful of characters, and even then in some of their cases not in all aspects.
And I won't even open the can of worms that is the Yunmeng Shuangjie. (because apparently, JC is toxic and bad for WWX even pre-time-skip because...he jokes around with his brother?...but WWX is not toxic and bad for JC when he jokes around with his brother? (this has a simple reason, and that is that nobody is toxic and bad for someone else due to joking around in a harmless way, especially among siblings.) And JC and WWX have a toxic relationship and can only break up because JC just keeps nagging WWX, while WWX causing trouble for JC & their sect every second of the day because he does whatever he wants and says whatever he wants in front of whoever he wants is not stressful for JC. (again, The Yunmeng bros themselves enjoy this dynamic. Or at least think the other parts of their relationship is worth putting up with these annoyances. WWX annoys JC every chance he gets and actively kickstarts JC's naggings. JC's life is dull and dark and boring without WWX's shenanigans and the dramas he causes. He himself thinks that having WWX in his life is worth the trouble. JC makes WWX more responsible, while WWX makes JC more carefree. they're good for each other.)
So as we saw, usually, when a certain logic doesn't work both ways it's because it's flawed. make sure to not use a certain logic in your determination to defend a character that should technically work for the character you hate, too.

Fit for Purpose Deleted Scenes III: the Final Sex Scene
As promised, more Fit for Purpose deleted scenes! Other deleted scenes posts are linked in the masterpost. Today's batch of deleted scenes are all iterations of the second-to-last scene of Fit for Purpose, in which WWX and LWJ are in bed together with (at last!) the same understanding of what they're about to do there. I hope you enjoy! Uh, hopefully this goes without saying, but: NSFW text.
“Come here, Lan Zhan.”
Step. Hesitation. “Wei Ying. I do not expect—”
“I know.”
Doubt.
“I know, Lan Zhan. You—you don’t want this to be for you.”
“Mn.”
Step closer. “It’s not. It—Lan Zhan, the last time—the first time—I liked it so much, with you. More than I ever liked it with anyone else.” Beat. “It felt different, with you. After, I… I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Wanting more. I was so happy when you asked me to sleep with you, and then when you just wanted to sleep…” He laughs. “Ah, Lan Zhan, you crushed me!” Beat. “It had never been like that, before. I never cared, before, if someone didn’t want to do it again. I never…”
Beat
“It was different, with you. Because you’re different. You mean something to me. You mean everything.” Raw, hoarse. “You said you don’t want to be to me what other people have been. Well, you aren’t. You couldn’t be. Not ever. You’re… you’re Lan Zhan. I don’t know any other way to say it than that.”
You can see that this version is very heavily focused on WWX reassuring LWJ that this isn’t going to be a repeat of their first time – that this is lovemaking, not a service. Ultimately, this thread has almost disappeared by the final version. The final version’s focus is on WWX acknowledging that fact to himself. But anyway, I didn’t like this version because WWX is making a speech. People don’t talk that way. It was too much. But the “don’t want to be what others have been” line repeating does survive to the final version.
When hai shi arrives, Wei Wuxian realizes he’s… nervous. They get ready for bed; Lan Zhan doesn’t try to persuade Wei Wuxian to stay up to his usual bedtime, so… he’s expecting it, too. They’re—not just going to sleep.
In bed, in their light sleep robes, side by side, warmth builds under the quilt. Lan Zhan lies still, just watching Wei Wuxian – watching as if he’d be perfectly content to do nothing but that. He doesn’t touch Wei Wuxian, doesn’t beckon him. Wei Wuxian’s nerves are singing, rising as the seconds tick by.
“Lan Zhan,” he whispers. “Lan Zhan, don’t you want to…”
“Wei Ying knows what I want,” says Lan Zhan, low. “But I do not know what Wei Ying wants.” He hesitates. “Wei Ying is accustomed to… providing a service. I do not know if he enjoys such acts, when free of—expectation. Assumption.”
“Of—” Of course I do, Wei Wuxian starts to reply. And he thinks it’s true. He thinks it’s true. But he never had the chance, before, to find out. Still. There’s one thing he’s sure of. “I don’t know about other people,” he admits. “What I would want with them. But it doesn’t matter. You’re my mate, and I want you,” he says. “I’ll like it, with you. I know I will.” He takes a deep breath. If Wei Ying wishes to be intimate, he need only ask. “Please,” he says. “Lan Zhan. Please. I want to, with you.”
The final version begins in medias res, with them already in bed, but as you can see, this version got some mileage out of the sizzle of sexual tension beforehand. The focus of this version is again on reassuring LWJ of WWX’s sincere sexual interest in him. One thing I like about it is the surfacing of the question of whether WWX even likes sex—but LWJ should already know that WWX is attracted to him, because there’s a whole other scene about that, so ultimately this was redundant.
“Lan Zhan, aren’t you going to…”
“If Wei Ying wishes to be intimate, sexually, he need only ask.” Beat. “Wei Ying need not ever ask,” Lan Zhan says, holding eye contact. “This is enough. More than enough.”
“Oh.” Beat. “I… but isn’t that—” the point, he almost says, the point of us being mates now, but—
It’s not about what someone can do for you. You love them just because.
“Right,” he mutters. “Ah, Lan Zhan, this will take some getting used to.”
“Mn. Then we will wait.”
“No, Lan Zhan, I—I don’t want to wait.” Wei Ying need only ask. He takes a deep breath. “Lan Zhan, I… want you.”
“Wei Ying.”
“Lan Zhan, can we—ah, Lan Zhan, don’t make me say ‘be sexually intimate,’ why do you have to put things in such a formal way?”
“It is clearer,” Lan Zhan replies, with a twinkle in his eye that means and also to mess with you.
I love the final beat of this version—I feel like LWJ would get a lot of amusement out of watching WWX squirm while saying “I want to be sexually intimate”—and I also like that this version has LWJ acknowledge that he would actually be totally fine with not having a sexual aspect to their relationship at all. But this is a ton of words that don’t actually get them any closer to having sex, and it would have made the scene so long, which would have created Return of the King Multiple Ending Syndrome. 😂 It needs to be clear that we’re in the descending action and energy phase of the story.
Ask? That’s not how it works, Wei Wuxian almost says again… but he remembers what Lan Zhan said in reply to that last time.
I do not wish to do what others have done. I do not wish to be to Wei Ying what others have been.
Beat.
“Lan Zhan.” A whisper. “Lan Zhan, I—I want you.”
“Wei Ying.” Lan Zhan reaches for him, draws him close.
“I’m so—ah, Lan Zhan, I’m so nervous, it’s so stupid!”
“Not stupid.”
“I feel like I’m so experienced, but I’m as new as you are, when it comes to…” He shrugs.
“Lovemaking.”
Beat.
“Yeah,” says Wei Wuxian, quiet. Not a service provided, or a practice session. Love.
“We will learn together.”
Wei Wuxian smiles. “Yeah.”
We’re getting closer! We’ve got the nerves, and the acknowledgment that this is a new experience for both of them, and WWX comparing and contrasting what sex has been before with what it will be now. But no way WWX just announces, “I’m as new as you are!” That whole line is so bad, I’m embarrassed. In the final version, WWX starts by denying that proposition, and only admits it after LWJ lovingly challenges that denial.
“I know you don’t expect that.”
Lan Zhan draws in a breath and holds it – tense, unsure. “Before…”
Ah. Wei Wuxian winces. Yes. Before. When Lan Zhan offered himself, body and heart, and Wei Wuxian left the bed laughing as if it were nothing. A service rendered.
But he knows better now.
He shakes his head and repeats, “I know, Lan Zhan. You—” How had he put it? “You don’t want to be to me what others have been. Right?”
Lan Zhan nods. His hands rise to splay across Wei Wuxian’s back, holding him close, blazing hot through Wei Wuxian’s thin inner robe.
“You aren’t. You couldn’t be. You weren’t, even then. You’re Lan Zhan.”  Kiss. “I didn’t understand why it was better with you than it had ever been, why I couldn’t stop thinking about it, wanting it, wanting you, but I did, and I do, more than anything—”
Kiss.
They get closer.
A regression to the first version, above, but WWX’s dialogue is at least shorter – I wouldn’t call it a speech anymore, thankfully. I really wanted to tie up the loose end of how hurt LWJ was by WWX’s misunderstanding of their first time together, but I already knew I was going to have the “you bit me on purpose, for real, didn’t you?” conversation later on, and that covers much the same ground. It’s still unnecessary to hash out WWX’s attraction to LWJ, because both the reader and LWJ are aware of the basic strokes there.
And then we have this lil’ baby draft, which finally put me on the right track: bringing the “Wei Ying is made to be loved” line back for this transition to the sex scene, and—this is key—realizing I wasn’t actually going to write the sex part of the sex scene. For a story that’s so much about sex, I was surprised to find that there was no need to describe the climactic (no pun intended lol) sex scene in detail.
“And I want you so much. I think I—always did.”
Wei Wuxian is used to being the teacher, in bed. Tonight, he is. And tonight, he isn’t.
He teaches Lan Zhan how to blah blah blah blah and blah blah and blah.
And Lan Zhan teaches him what it is to be made for love.
But back when I was figuring I’d give a play-by-play, I had two takes highlighting LWJ’s lack of practical experience and how it wasn’t actually a hindrance. This next bit is totally unedited, since I knew as soon as I wrote it that it was wrong.
Wei Wuxian says he wants Lan Zhan to fuck him.
Lan Zhan has salve, knows exactly what to do.
“How are you—so good at this?”
“Research.”
Wei Wuxian knows he has no right to be jealous, he’s the one who left and acted like he was never coming back, but—“Who were you ‘researching’ with?”
Lan Zhan looks amused. “Books.”
“O-oh.” Wei Wuxian feels silly, but also very relieved. “Sorry.”
“Do not be sorry. I like that Wei Ying is jealous.”
Now you know how bad my first drafts are. 😂 Sooo many clumsy lines there. Anyway, I then took a second crack at it, removing the jealousy aspect, which didn’t make a lot of sense to begin with, and focusing on why LWJ might undertake research in this instance.
“Wei Ying. What do you want?”
“Ah, Lan Zhan, are you really going to make me decide?”
“Mn.”
“Ah, well, it’s…” Blushing. Quietly. “I can’t—take you inside the way an omega could, but… there’s another way…”
“I am familiar.” Then, to Wei Wuxian’s shock and delight, he reaches under the bed and pulls out—yes, a bottle of oil.
“Lan Zhan!”
Avoiding Wei Wuxian’s eyes very cutely. “I undertook research.” More somberly: “I did not wish to force Wei Ying into the role of teacher.”
Ah. Yes, Wei Wuxian has played that role many times in bed. He wouldn’t mind it at all with Lan Zhan—it would be different, better, with Lan Zhan, because everything is—but he appreciates Lan Zhan’s forethought. “Lan Zhan is so considerate of his mate.” He likes calling himself Lan Zhan’s mate because Lan Zhan’s eyes go all fiery every time he does.
I think that’s very cute, actually, if I may say so myself. I would definitely have kept it if I’d decided to describe the sex in detail.
Finally, there’s this bit, which I wrote quite early on, when the story was going to discuss WWX’s history of sex work more directly. With sex work stigma being such a powerful presence in canon, it seemed like the kind of thing WWX would fear would be a dealbreaker (although of course it wouldn’t be).
WWX can’t meet his gaze. Lan Zhan, I—I’ve been used by other alphas. Omegas, too.
Mn, LWJ says, in a tone that makes it sound like I know.
Which he does, of course.
A—a lot of others.
Mn.
Beat. WWX waiting for Lan Zhan to ask how many. He doesn’t. WWX takes a deep breath.
For—for money, sometimes.
LWJ nods, and kisses him.
Against WWX’s lips, he murmurs, “Wei Ying has given much, to take care of others. I hope he will allow his mate to take care of him from now on.”
I hope you enjoyed! We’ll pick up tomorrow with a collection of more sexy deleted scenes, focusing on the question of LWJ’s rut, and we will learn that there is, in fact, such a thing as too much worldbuilding. 😂

There are a couple common claims about things MXTX has said in author's notes which I just wanted to make a little note-to-self with the exact context/source of because they keep coming up again and again. I find that between general translation issues and then further filtered through summaries and offhand comments and then repurposed for... uh let's just say spirited debate, they tend to be presented as much stronger or more emphatic or more serious statements than the impression I got when reading them in context (the translated versions, of course!).
'Morally perfect' comes from the postscripts (published by Exiled Rebels as chapter 113.5):
Both WWX and LWJ are highly ideal characters, so there wouldn't be too much dispute on their moral standing. They're perfect as the protagonists. Of course, I do like WWX a lot, but if I'm looking for a boyfriend, sorry, I'll only have LWJ please.
This is the same postscript where she talks about the difficulties of publishing on the timeline she did and how she was worried the structure of the novel would do badly in serialized/webnovel format, how Xue Yang was like a has-been internet idol in the comments section compared to the Jiang Cheng haters (lol), how she threw everything she liked about an ancient setting in a pot and changed whatever she liked without any intention of historical accuracy at all, etc. So the focus of the postscript wasn't like a morality essay or anything, just offhand comments and notes and trivia.
'MXTX wants us to be like Wangxian' comes from the final author's note of the last extra (ExR ch. 126):
Without care for anything at all, I shall give the entirety of my soul to the pen and the paper.
I no longer like to tell my readers, 'I love you.' These words are too light, and yet these words are too heavy.
I hope each of you who enjoys this book can be like Lan WangJi in virtue and Wei WuXian in character.
P.S. I received the help of many in the publication process.
There's more before and after, from talking about how she decided the type of story she wanted it to be, outlining process, and then after she goes on to thank her editors, the webnovel platform, supportive friends, etc.
Whether any given person cares what her opinion is out-of-text or not is another matter of course! But since it gets brought up so much as if they're very serious Word Of God proclamations... well... it's probably pretty obvious my opinion/interpretation lands in the 'it's not supposed to be that serious, bruh' category.
Though even if it were meant to be super serious I'd personally still be like, 'well that's just like, your opinion, random author lady.' But at the same time, these quotes tend to be used in a way that gives a distorted impression of how serious and thorough they were intended to be and often add confusion.
Also I don't think MXTX is saying we should go feed a guy's fingers to a ghost child in front of him while he's forced to eat his own leg but that's really just wild speculation and assumption on my part, maybe she would appreciate that idk.

What Häagen-Dazs flavors would you reward (or punish if you think they really wouldn’t like X) Untamed characters with?
you're out here asking the real questions:
wwx goes for the exträaz espresso chocolate cookie ice cream
jgy gets classic coffee--it's a classic for a reason! also because he probably only treats himself when working towards a deadline
jc is also a classic coffee guy, but he knows jin ling is going to steal from his tub when he visits, so he buys the coffee cookie cream swirl stuff, because he's a softie
jzx strikes me as a pineapple coconut kind of guy
jzn gets flavourless and weirdly textured frozen dessert because he doesn't deserve nice things
lwj used to choose the classic vanilla until he discovered vanilla bean, and now that's his go-to
lxc, same as above, until jgy treated him to divine raspberry cheesecake, and now he's very normal about it
nhs is of course all about decadent dulce de leche, you can't change my mind
nmj doesn't understand why everyone here can't just be happy with goddamn chocolate ice cream, why do you have to make everything so complicated, meng yao

Cw: (fictional) physical and emotional abuse
I find it so amusing that a lot of people when discussing YZY'a abuse of WWX either claim that it wasn't that bad (in fact, it was that bad, and it's even clearer in the lotus pod extra), that it was acceptable in that society's culture/is historically correct (ignoring the fact that the author is a modern person with modern values telling you through the text how fucked up that was and how in the text no one else exhibited the same behavior as her despite it being supposedly their right to; they had better morals and ethics than her) or that WWX was supposed to be singled out and endure the punishment because he was the Head Disciple and this is the point that really gets to me because... Why do people think YZY has any right to punish any disciple?
She forced her way into marrying JFM, then made it her personal mission to make everyone's lives hell with her entitlement and abuse (a side note: I do think most of JFM's passiveness and apathetic nature is actually a result of said abuse, a self-preservation mechanism of sorts, but that's both personal and topic for another post). YZY married into the clan and gave birth to two children, one of them the heir, but that's literally the only thing she does for YMJ. She rarely spends time at Lotus Pier, what little she spends there are unpleasant to everyone involved. Her vitriol poisoned JC against the values of his own clan, the one he's supposed to inherit, and made it impossible for JFM to even try to teach him (and I honestly commend him for still trying anyway, as seen post-Xuanwu incident). She disrespects the dead and drags their names as though they're trash — one of them being WCZ, who used to be a part of YMJ and (possibly) made good contributions to the clan, as he was let go peacefully. And, the most important of them, she rejects the title of Jiang-furen. She always goes by Yu-furen (a title that belongs to her older sister, not her; at best, by logic, if she was still in Meishan Yu, she'd be third madam Yu, instead of simply Yu-furen). While some may argue it's her way to fight patriarchy and show love for her natal clan, it's still downright insulting to the Jiang clan and her husband.
She chooses not to associate herself with them by name and behavior. She doesn't even share the same servants and lives in completely different quarters. But of course, despite all this, she still enjoys the power of being the madam of the Jiang clan. All because no one dares go against her, lest they become the next target of her hatred. That, too, is another form of her abuse. But she doesn't have the right to when she chooses to reject everything the Jiangs stand for.
So yeah, what she did to WWX was fucked up beyond imagination, because 1) he was a child, 2) it was abuse, and 3) she was using an authority and power she shouldn't have the right to after everything.
If you read this and come saying any "buts" I will block you, btw 😂 Unless you're a mutual, which we shall agree to disagree, but I won't discuss further if your opinion differs. I have no patience and no will to hear/read abuse apologism of any kind (again, for personal reasons). I just wanted to type out some thoughts. Thanks for reading I guess 😂

[College dormitory life (18+)]
AllCheng | Mo Dao Zu Shi Modern AU 08-06-2021
[#allcheng, college/university dorms] (NSFW)
let's imagine that (somehow) everyone goes to the same school and they all live in the same dorms.
jc is very pretty and everyone wants a piece of him and he doesn't mind giving~
-Wei Wuxian-
they managed to be roommates, as jc was much more comfortable with someone he knew than someone he wasn't familiar with. And familiar with they were.
They actually already had a little /something/ going on already, where they were fooling around a lot behind yzy and jfm backs, hiding from everyone else. They were each other first in many things, usually experimenting with each other.
now having a whole room for themselves only gave them more opportunities to fuck like they want, without needing to make sure no one is around. They can be a bit louder than before, but jc is scared to be caught by others so he tries to keep it down.
-Nie Huaisang-
nhs is actually the first one in the bunch to approach him first. they were already friends from high school so jc was already somewhat at ease with him. Plus nhs may or may not have a slight crush on jc because he is his type, but it's not a serious crush.
they both agreed that it was alright if it never leads to a serious relationship, they are playing around and nhs finds it just fine.
It gives jc the chance to switch a bit. Not that sex with wwx is bad, but he likes to top from time to time and nhs seems more than happy to bottom for him.
they usually try to do it when their roommate isn't there (tho wwx very much knows about it, they don't hide much from each other). If the moment needs it, they will take a hotel room when the horniness is too much to wait for an opening.
-Lan Xichen-
He is the first one of the seniors to approach him. it took a lot of flirting with jc (and seeing jc shyly respond with some flirting too). They usually meet in the library where jc likes to study (it's quieter and wwx doesn't go there much, hence more quietness).
lxc doesn't have the advantage of first really knowing jc, so he takes him on dates to make the other one more comfortable around him. clearly, they like each other and soon jc wonders how it would be to be manhandled by those strong hands (he has felt them on his waist, they are big, warm and very likely strong too).
the first shy jc is the one to kiss him first, trapping him against a shelf of the library, in a deserted corner. lxc took the given opportunity and they kissed a lot that time. they had to finish up with a handjob in the corner.
afterwards, they very much went farther, jc was more than happy to have strong hands on him like that. much like nhs, they try doing it when they have the time and the room are free (tho when lxc is horny, he is more likely to just rent a room for them, which is often).
-Nie Mingjue-
nmj knew about his brother's relationship with jc (of course nhs couldn't escape his brother making sure he got a good bf). They started somewhat hanging out when jc and lxc started being a bit more touchy together (but still not there yet).
They notice they were going to the same gym in the morning before classes and nmj ended up suggesting a drive to jc (he was pretty excited to be on a motorbike) they got closer by training together (nmj is pretty good at helping him work out correctly). The first time they fucked because of the sexual tension just being too much (and jc learning to be a tease) was in the gym shower room when no one was there.
they did it more than once afterwards in the locker room (jc found the trill of someone maybe finding out rather exciting) and when lxc wasn't in their room (it was a fun time when lxc stumbled on them that one time😏).
-Jin Zixuan-
(sorry jyl 😔)
jzx and jc never really planned that anything would happen, they love jyl too much to really do that to her.
but jc did find jxc attractive (but never said it to anyone) and jzx did like jc a bit despite never showing it.
(cw: sex while drunk)
they ended up sleeping together one time when everyone was drunk and people somehow managed to convince jc to crossdress for them. wwx kept saying jc could look more like jyl with makeup and a wig. later they started arguing about some stupid shit jzx did and the next thing they know they were in jzx room and getting at it pretty heavily.
the next morning was very awkward and they were unsure how to tell jyl about it. After all, they couldn't /not/ tell her, they didn't have it in them to not tell.
Sure thing, it was a really awkward meeting when they did so two days later, both young men looking ready to die for the stupid shit they did (as much of an angel as jyl can be, it was a rough couple of months before she got over it fully. they are both people she loves and trust, she never expected them to do that)
not the best experience for jc (even tho the sex was good)
-Lan Wangji-
lwj wanted to know what was so good about jx, since wwx would never shut up about him. Sure, they've known each other in school (just like with nhs), but he really doesn't get it. Isn't jc just a grumpy guy who does nothing but study?
what is his surprise when he learns from his /brother/ that jc isn't as innocent as he seems to be (or as wwx seems to like to claim). But he still doesn't understand why wwx would prefer him over lwj. so he pursues him only to see it for himself. of course, jc doesn't necessarily enjoy the more aggressive way lwj comes at him (isn't he supposed to be a quiet person!! isn't he more like his brother!?).
but he would lie if he said he wasn't curious to see how lwj would perform compared to his brother. Is he as strong? Would he be more gentle or as merciless as lxc can be sometimes?
So they end up hooking up at some point for some vaguely angry sex because of course they too had an argument before that leading to sexual tension.
lwj is surprised at how nice it actually was and he can admit wwx might not be wrong. in a way, lwj still wants to steal wwx hearts, but when jc comes up to him for more he will never say no to him. Maybe he doesn't hate the young man as much as he might do (and jc doesn't seem to hate him like he thought jc did).
-Xue Yang-
jc is seriously unsure sometimes if xy is really a student or not. He never sees him in classes or anything study related but you bet he will see him at parties getting drunk and high, flirting with anyone that catches his eyes.
of course, he becomes one of those targets and xy seems to have quite some fun flirting with him and not discreetly at all.
One night jc is horny so he simply gives in. After all, if xy is so eager to have him why not?
what was supposed to be one-night stand ended up becoming a more regular thing. Jc also learns he might not be as vanilla as he was (well, he /does/ enjoy semi-public sex soo).
-Wen Ning-
wn is one of the rare shy friends wwx has. He's pretty quiet and can be a bit of a doormat sometimes. jc never spoke much with him until once at a party they ended up both outside for a breath (his head was killing him and he needed fresh air).
He ended up disappearing for the rest of the night, leaving the loud party for a 24h coffee shop where he ended up talking with wn and learning about him.
they ended up having more of these little moments where they just sit down and talk for a long time, having more points in common than they thought they might have.
wn ends up developing a crush on him (but doesn't make a move because he's sure jc is either dating wwx or nhs). of course, wwx (the little traitor!) ends up telling jc because he wants his friend to get it too.
jc is a bit surprised that the shy wn has a crush on him, but he doesn't mind, wn is good-looking and also looks strong too.
jc decide to give it a chance, rather amused at how flustered wn gets when he decides to really put his heart into flirting.
at some point wn finally gets it, jc /is/ flirting with him, so he tentatively kisses him one time, nearly running away when jc doesn't respond out of being stunned (a little shy /wen ning/ kissed him first?! damn).
Thing escalates from there because you can be sure jc will get it if wn finally gives in. It's a bit new, since jc has now gotten used to other rough or kinky sex. wn is so gentle with him, as if scared to hurt him. He doesn't hate it, it's nice to have someone caring like this.
although, when they switch, wn does seem to enjoy having it a bit rougher than what he gives (it take a couple of time for wn to finally get assured enough that he won't hurt him if he goes a bit rougher).
Now jc can chuckle and smirk anytime people comment on how wn must be an innocent child who never did anything.
-Wen Chao-
Wc hears rumours about jc and he tries to pursue him because "Ah! of course the great me can get into his pants too".
Yet, his way of doing is even more aggressive than lwj to the point where nmj and lxc end up asking him to fuck off (although lxc is more polite about it in his terrifying way to always be calm, nmj still looks like a bigger treat).
So he gives up (which his brother doesn't stop mocking for a while after all his claiming of it being so easy). He does throw a tantrum when he learns wn got jc ("fucking /Wen Ning/? are we talking about the same cousin here? quiet and shy /Wen Ning/ got jc? how?!?!") so he resumes his tries, but this time he tries to be more gentle and much less aggressive than (which make him allow on thin ice by everyone else protecting jc's ass).
jc eventually allows him after wc got angry again when he refused him. "Oh, so you think you are better than everyone else? I suppose I can judge on that, tho if you fail my expectation you ain't getting more" (which is a slap in the face, because /wn/ checks out?).
So wc makes sure to show all he has. jc has to admit, he isn't bad, but he isn't the greatest either when wx only search for his own pleasure and doesn't really care for jc's one. "You're boring," jc says as he clicks his tongue when wx comes once and he didn't (he can see in wc face that he did not like that comment) "Let me show you".
Cue power bottom jc showing wc how to actually pleasure him. "Come back when you actually learned to make your partner feel good and not just you," he says when they are done, going back to his room.
wc put his heart into actually learning because he cannot let his pride be this hurt by the fact that he sucks and his cousin does well.
-Jin Guangyao-
jgy approached jc when he learned from both his friend that they sleep with jc (but he doesn't know everyone basically knows and everyone is fine with sharing), but also that he caused trouble between jzx and jyl.
he just wants to investigate and make sure his best friends are not sleeping with someone who's just taking advantage of them.
His tentative to scare jc by subtle showing he knows he's sleeping around with basically the whole dormitory at this point doesn't work, as jc just brushes it off ("Sure, tell them").
this is an open secret, but no one mention really knowing about it so jgy thinks everyone is being tricked. he wants to make sure his friend won't be hurt, but he cannot find actual proof because even xy won't help him on this one ("I don't think your er-ge cares").
So he decides that his latest option is sleeping with jc himself! He can sacrifice himself to help his friends.
but it's actually pretty good? better than with any ex he ever had, and jc sure knows what he does when they switch up. he feels somewhat down now that he betrayed his friend and wants/more/.
"You really don't need to worry," jc tells him as they lay next to each other al sweaty, "Everyone knows, but it was fun seeing you trying to expose me".
jgy seems still a bit unsure, but jc basically straight up call his gege and they pretty much confirm on the phone that yeah, they know and are alright with it. cue the three of them having fun together with jc to show jgy that he can keep having fun with jc too.
(I feel like I insulted jgy intelligence, sorry )
[I ran out of people that could be students :') feel free to put suggestions, I might add]

When I was deep in a feverish haze all I could think about was Wei Wuxian's first illness post golden core transfer because cultivators never get sick so when wwx does for the first time he's absolutely awful at it.
Like he's walking around lotus pier trying to pretend he's fine but he's stumbling into walls and almost walks off the deck into the lake at some point. And of course everyone just thinks he's drunk or something cause cultivators don't get sick and wwx goes with it and laughs it all off, pretending he's hungover and absolutely fine, until he ends up shivering in bed until shijie brings him soup with a concerned look in her eyes he refuses to acknowledge.
When he gets better he cracks jokes and pretends it was nothing and hides his lingering cough in his sleeve.
With the Wens it's only a little bit better bc they do know about his core and Wen Qing is a doctor and can help him, but you see wwx can't lie down and rest how can he when there's so much he has to do?
He works as hard as he can, making sure to lift everything for granny even though his body aches and using all his energy to keep A-Yuan happy and distracted, in between moments of clearing resentment, all until he passes out in the middle of an empty path with no one around to see him fall.
Eventually Wen Ning finds him and carries him back wei wuxian wakes up to Wen Qing forcing some awful broth made of scraps of meat and yelling at him to go to sleep and rest. But of course the moment they're all asleep for the night he goes back to work. He can't rest there's no time, even as his head pounds and his body screams and the sickness eats away at his insides as the resentment does the same. There's no time for rest.
Post canon the first time Wei Wuxian gets sick he falls into a old habits and doesn't tell anyone, just continues puttering about and acting fine, distracting the juniors during their lessons and hanging off Lan Zhan's shoulders to tease him while he works.
But of course Lan Wangji notices the way his husband sways more than just with his usual dramatic swagger, and how he keeps shoving his favorite foods away saying he's not hungry as he rubs at his throat.
The final straw is when Wei Wuxian says he's too tired for their everyday but then plays it off as a joke at the look of concern Lan Zhan gives himso they do it anyways. And even tho Lan Zhan is tender and slow tonight Wei Wuxian still passes out from shear exhaustion before either have even finished
Lan Wangji has a moment of panic, thinking he broke his husband but then connects the dots...
When wwx wakes up he's smothered by their warmest blankets and wearing lwj's softest underrobe (because when A-Yuan was sick he liked to wear the robe too for the comforting smell and warmth). He looks around groggy and half asleep calling for his Lan Zhan, feeling bereft and confused.
He's about to get up and find him himself, even though the thought of getting up makes him feel dizzy when lwj comes back and glides to wwx's side with a bowl of congee that has just a hint of red in it. Wei Wuxian teases him about "there must be a rule about breakfast in bed Lan Zhan" and tries to get to his feet, but Lan Wangji pushes him down gently murmuring, "Rest, Wei Ying."
And suddenly its like the Jingshi has melted away replaced with the jagged stone walls of a familiar cave because Wei Wuxian you see he can't rest, there's things to do and people need him and he has to be strong he can't just rest he isn't allowed and what about the Wens he needs to get up he cant just lie here he needs to save them and he cant breathe and his head is going in awful circles and it feels like something is clawing its way out of him and he has to go do something and fix something, until Lan Wangji pulls him onto his lap and starts humming their song as he rubs soothing circles along wwx's back. And even though wwx's breaths are still coming out in terrified waves as his eyes dart around for some unseen threat, despite it all he starts to relax little by little to the sound of his Lan Zhan’s familiar baritone.
When he finally calms down enough he realizes he's been crying, blubbering like a baby leaving disgusting snot stains in the illustrious Hanguang-jun's robes and he tries to wipe them them away before Lan Zhan sees but lwj just holds his face between two hands with the most softesr care, his expression open and honest in a way it only ever is for Wei Ying, and he just keeps humming nonsense and nursery rhymes as he kisses wwx's tear tracks away. And tho wwx still can't stop crying lwj doesn't say anything, doesn't chide or lecture or tell him anything, just holds wwx and lets the smell of sandalwood wrap a comforting and warm embrace around wwx.
Eventually wwx does drift off and he comes to still huddled against lwj's chest, a lovely spot of drool right over his husband's brand and heart, as he reads a book about dual cultivation. It's past midday now and wwx asks about Lan Zhan's duties, fiddling with the edge of his forehead ribbon.
But Lan Wangji simply says, "Wei Ying is most important" and kisses his forehead and goes back to his book.
And Wei Wuxian burrows back into his husbands chest as if he tried hard enough he could carve a hole and bury himself besides Lan Zhan's heart forever, and pretends the flush he feels is from the fever.
They spend the next 2 days like that, with lwj guiding wwx back down to rest whenever the anxiety tries to make him feel bad and then comforting him through it all, kindly never pointing out the way every so often tears start to fall silently down wwx's face when he gets to thinking too much and even more kindly not pointing out the awful inelegant sound of wwx's honking wet coughs.
At some point Sizhui even visits, bringing an attempt at lotus rib soup using what Wen Ning remembers. It's not quite the same but it's more than enough and finally Wei Wuxian feels his shivers subside completely.
When Wei Wuxian wakes up on the 3rd day, well rested in a way he's never felt after being ill, he immediately jumps his husband and smothers his face in exuberant kisses that make Lan Wangji smile his special Wei Ying smile.
And although no one says anything Wei Wuxian knows deep within his gifted bones that from now on whenever he falls ill, there will always be someone to catch him.

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed, Episode 35 part one
(Masterpost) (Pinboard)
Tumblr media
Warning! Spoilers for All 50 Episodes!
Perfect Date, part one: Moon Gazing
While Wei Wuxian has been out unpacking emotional baggage with his family, Lan Wangji has been busy planning the perfect date. He's found the tallest bridge in town and placed himself there where his crush is most likely to see him in profile.
When Wei Wuxian arrives, Lan Wangji is gazing at the moon to pass the time. I wonder what phase the moon is in? Crescent, maybe? Waning?
Tumblr media
Ha ha ha ha, this is television, the moon is full, of course.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian is downtrodden and bummed out until he sees Lan Wangji, at which his whole demeanor brightens and softens, and he cat-blinks up at him.
Tumblr media
Then he reflects for a moment on the reversal in his expectations. He's not one to dwell on gains and losses, but in this moment he sees that he's both lost Jiang Cheng and gained Lan Wangji.  Wangxian, flute solo edition, plays on the soundtrack while he somewhat dejectedly goes to meet up with Lan Wangji.
Get Your Hair Did
Lan Wangji didn’t do his hair specially for this date, because his hair is always so extra it would be too obvious if he tried to make it more extra. But he sure does look beautiful.
Tumblr media
The Lans have a rule about not wearing excessive bling. It’s good to know that wearing two pieces of silver on your headband (one of them is not visible here, it’s on the part that wraps around his ponytail) and four more on top of your head is not excessive.
(More after the cut!)
One of the things I love about Lan Wangji is that he values beauty, including his own beauty. He's an ideal gentleman of his time; one who appreciates his natural gifts and is responsibly curating them for the enjoyment of those around him. And while he’s been through an ocean of grief and trauma, and has a body covered in scars to show for it, he hasn’t let that change the way he adorns or carries himself.
It’s Only A Flesh Wound
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian slowly hobbles up the stairs and then tries to bullshit Lan Wangji about the state of his body at this moment, which is:
limping because of being beaten with magic lightning whip
massive gnarly curse on leg
additional curse on arm which Lan Wangji doesn't even know about yet
probably didn't eat anything today either
Lan Wangji wants to take care of Wei Wuxian. Lan Wangji has his work cut out for him.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian tries super hard to downplay the entire situation but Lan Wangji pretty much reads his mind, immediately yanking his robe up to look at his leg.
Tumblr media
(Knee replacement surgery photoshoppery by yours truly)
When he sees the gnarly curse, he is able to infer that that Wei Wuxian transferred the curse from Jin Ling, and that he therefore met Jiang Cheng, and that he therefore got his ass beat.
These two and their nonverbal communication. Wei Wuxian says ten times as much as Lan Wangji, but so much of it is deliberately misleading that his words don’t convey any more real information than Lan Wangji’s silences. They both need to rely on body language and inference in order to understand each other.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji decides that he’ll carry Wei Wuxian, and when WWX says no, they go back and forth about that time during the turtle hunt, when Wei Wuxian offered (unsuccessfully) to carry Lan Wangji. Wei Wuxian claims not to remember, and Lan Wangji has the nerve to get his feelings hurt, microfrowning as if Wei Wuxian forgot some special or tender moment.
Tumblr media
Of course, to Lan Wangji it was a special, tender moment; Wei Wuxian was thoughtful and risked getting in trouble to try to help him. But to Wei Wuxian it would just be another of the many, many, many times he tried to get close to Lan Wangji and Lan Wangji told him to fuck off.
Tumblr media
Perfect Date, part 2: Barebacking Piggybacking
Lan Wangji, displaying the same respect for Wei Wuxian’s boundaries that Wei Wuxian chronically displays for his, ignores his protests and picks him up to carry him back to the inn. He’s working his way down the romance-tropes checklist tonight and he’ll be damned if he misses any ticky boxes.
Tumblr media
The department of questionable practical effects has cooked up some excellent fake legs for this occasion. I mean...its possible they’re real? But come on. Look at them.
Tumblr media
In the shot where Wang Yibo is actually carrying Xiao Zhan while they both obviously laugh, XZ's legs are tucked back, with the sole of his shoe showing.
Tumblr media
And when they walk down the stairs in the closer shots, it really doesn't look like XZ is putting his weight on WYB. Maybe they are both walking down the stairs in tandem? Anyway, Wang Yibo has an exceptional bod, with perfect control of every muscle on his frame, but he is a slender, wiry guy who is overall smaller than the dude he is carrying. So I don't begrudge them any fakery they needed for this shot. I just laugh at Wei Wuxian's gently swaying feet whenever I see them.
Tumblr media
While Lan Wangji carries Wei Wuxian, they banter a bit about how Lan Wangji was able to recognize him. But that’s mainly a distraction from what’s really going on in this scene, which is a classic hurt/comfort encounter. The last time we saw WWX get a piggyback ride from someone, it was Jiang Yanli carrying him after he fell out of a tree. Wei Wuxian is always taking care of everyone, but his sister is the person who consistently took care of him, and now Lan Wangji is stepping into that role.
He tried to do it in Wei Wuxian's previous life, without much luck, but now he's just blowing past Wei Wuxian's objections and doing what he feels needs doing.
Perfect Date, part 3: Drinks with a Friend
Tumblr media
When you’re shy or just not that talkative, it’s not a bad idea to meet up with friends on your date, so that someone can help get the conversation going. Lan Wangji has recruited old friend Nie Huaisang to break the ice and put Wei Wuxian in a cheery mood.
The camera cuts away while Wei Wuxian ties the ribbon of his mask, just like it cuts away whenever a cultivator starts to re-sheathe a sword.
Tumblr media
And now we, and Wei Wuxian, learn that grown-up Lan Wangji is not only comfortable touching and carrying Wei Wuxian, he's apparently into manhandling him quite a bit, unnecessarily doing a full-body, both-hands snuggle just to walk him three steps over a threshold.
Nobody is complaining about this, mind you.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji has a hunch that Wei Wuxian likes his mean side, so he is mean to Nie Huaisang in front of him, hoping that it gives Wei Wuxian ideas.
Wei Wuxian follows up by giving NHS a warning that comes directly from his own experience: “if you don’t explain what’s going on today, be careful that once it gets out, all the cultivator families will gather to interrogate and subjugate [and]...when you want to talk, no-one will be willing to listen; no-one will be willing to believe you.”
Tumblr media
Nie Huaisang gets revenge for their bullying by dumping nearly 10 solid minutes of exposition on them. We are kinda done with the “show, don’t tell” phase of the story; there’s a lot of information to impart. I’ll explain.
No, is too much, I sum up.
The crypt in the forest is a Nie Clan ancestral tomb, that occasionally eats people because it’s got traps all around it.
The crypt doesn’t hold bodies, but sabers.
The Nie Clan’s sabers are just absolutely loaded with resentful energy, which is why Nie Clan leaders tend to die of qi deviation.
Tumblr media
The crypt's sabers are angry, and they like to feed on monsters and beasts, so the traps are designed to lure in those sort of creatures.
The humans who get eaten are generally either thieves, or cultivators too dumb to realize they’re trespassing on Nie property, which makes it fair to eat them.
How was Nie Huaisang to know that Jin Ling, a cultivator who actually matters to people, was that dumb?
This is all a big secret because using resentful energy, even without killing humans to get it, is forbidden. And the entire Nie Clan has been using it for ages.
Including, incidentally, during that one time when they came to Nightless City to point their (resentful) sabers at Wei Wuxian and punish him for using resentful energy.  That time that he basically described to Nie Huaisang in his warning at the beginning of the conversation.
Fortunately for Wei Wuxian’s mood while hearing all of this, Lan Wangji has already ordered wine for their date, and he has it ready for Wei Wuxian the moment it’s needed.
Tumblr media
Look at that swagger.
Also fortunately, Nie Huaisang is a genuine friend to Wei Wuxian (even more than WWX realizes currently, of course), and there is a lot of goodwill still remaining from their youth together. Earlier in the conversation Wei Wuxian yoinked NHS’s fan off of him, and before he gives it back he looks at it carefully and has a flashback to a new-to-us scene of their time in cloud recesses, where NHS showed him how great the fan is, while WWX rated it “meh.”
Tumblr media
This time he repeats, verbatim, Nie Huaisang’s words of praise about the fan. Wei Wuxian’s memory for poetry and poetic speech is perfect, despite the swiss cheese that is his functional memory.
It’s a little jarring, and a lot heartbreaking, to see young Wei Wuxian, with his fresh, pure style (no black robes, no bracers, a floral silver twist in his hair), with his boundless enthusiasm and curiosity, and with his sword. The fact that we haven’t seen this scene before makes it hit that much harder.
I’m not sure if Wei Wuxian is deliberately giving Nie Huaisang a hint about his identity, or if he’s just praising his fan as a way of showing that he appreciates his friend. Nie Huaisang doesn’t show any sign of recognition, though, just grabs his fan and goes.
Perfect Date, part 4: Slip Into Something More Comfortable
Lan Wangji jumps into the next part of the date with gusto, settling at Wei Wuxian’s feet and attempting to take his clothes off. Wei Wuxian gets all shy, saying he can do it himself.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji signals his new acceptance of demonic cultivation by making an unabashed thirst face when he sees Wei Wuxian’s extremely-cursed bare leg.
Tumblr media
The moment is interrupted by the cursed sword in the Qiankun bag, jumping around on a fishing wire like a fucking cat toy.
Tumblr media
Perfect Date, part 5: Gift Giving
At this point we, and Wei Wuxian, discover that Lan Wangji has stealthily stolen his flute and has fixed it so it sounds good. Also it has some nice carvings on it now, which presumably came from Lan Wangji, although maybe they were there already from Wei Wuxian waving Jingyi’s sword around when he initially cut the flute. That’s how the holes got put in it, after all. The entire genesis of this flute is sketchy.
While the “somebody loves me” music plays on the soundtrack -- a tune we hear a lot when Jiang Yanli is on screen -- Lan Wangji finishes fixing up the flute while Wei Wuxian watches him, with dawning warmth and happiness.
Tumblr media
This is the first of two times that a person who previously condemned Wei Wuxian’s method of cultivation, gives him a flute. Both times, I think, it’s the person’s way of giving their blessing to his cultivation method.
Tumblr media
The fact that Lan Wangji initially tells Wei Wuxian to play Rest solo is another huge gesture of respect. Rest is a Lan Clan jam, but Lan Wangji lets Wei Wuxian take lead, only joining in when the cat toy Qiankun of Sword Cursedness doesn’t cooperate.
Perfect Date, part 6: a Duet
When Lan Wangji does join in, it's the best part of their date night, for them and for us. The camera operator treats us to several gratuitous closeups of beautiful hands and lips while they play.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They are delighted to be playing together, with a whole lot of eye fucking  gazing, and Lan Wangji openly smiling like the lovestruck dork that he is.
Tumblr media
This duet is a quiet evolution of their battle-couple dynamic; they're perfectly in sync with each other, subduing a restless spirit like regular cultivators on a night hunt. The first time they played Rest together, it was after an argument, on opposite sides of a killing field. Now they're playing and working in perfect harmony, in a considerably more intimate setting.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji feels like this date is going really really well.

Jiggy.
MY SPECIAL LITTLE GUY MY BLORBO LOVE OF MY LIFE. i am insane about him. he is the character of all time
My first impression: huh. i don't know what's going on here but he seems interesting and competent.
My impression now: i would kill and die for him. he is my favorite character in mdzs and one of my favorites EVER. he has so many layers!! a-yao....
Favorite thing about that character: he's COMPETENT. to an absolutely insane degree. learning what he did about cultivation from shitty useless manuals and forming a golden core as an older teenager/young adult takes an INSANE amount of talent, not to mention HENSHENG??? he is the only (named?) character to have a soft sword, he's adapted bits of fighting styles from multiple major sects, and he's skilled enough with Hensheng that at some point he has shattered multiple spiritual weapons with it. he was a spy under WEN FUCKING RUOHAN for months. he and wwx are entirely responsible for winning the sunshot campaign and he dealt the final blow. also what he did with the song of turmoil?? equally insane amount of talent.
Least favorite thing: the Bad TakesTM. he attracts them like FLIES
Favorite line/scene: Lan Xichen! In this life, I’ve lied countless times, killed countless times. Like you said, I killed my father, my brother, my wife, my son, my teacher, my friend—of all the evil in the world, what haven’t I done?!...But I’ve never even thought of harming you!
i am very normal about them.
honestly his entire Guanyin Temple showing is nuts in the best way and i am chewing on him. close seconds are him on the stairs of Jinlintai looking at Nie Mingjue and going, of course they and I are different! the utter RESIGNATION of it. the truth of it!! he will never be treated like the rest of the cultivation world, he knows it, and Mingjue can't see it like he does!
Favorite interaction that character has with another: every time he and xichen are on screen or on page together is just. so nuts. the box scene. guanyin temple (god!!!!!!!!!! augh). everything cql added in.
A character that I wish that character would interact with more: Qin Su!! she needs more time anyway but god their relationship is SO TRAGIC and i love looking at AUs where the whole marriage can be avoided and there aren't lasting scars left on both jgy and qs from. you know. accidentally marrying your half sibling because your shared father is a rapist. also, we get zero real looks at how their relationship is before everything goes south and it pains me.
Another character from another fandom that reminds me of that character: this is so fucking hard oh my god. there are bits of He Xuan and Ling Wen that i see in him, i think? especially the. "i was born the same day as you and i am cleverer than you but my life was a tragedy and yours was perfect, so why was I not worthy of the same fate you were? why did I get nothing when you got everything?" and the "you know what? I am tired of cleaning up your messes. i am going to cause problems now." he also... i cannot explain this one but his vibes are very similar to Alexander of Tirragen from the Song of the Lioness quartet in my mind. i genuinely truly cannot comprehend WHY those two are associated in my brain, but they are.
A headcanon about that character: he was in love with Xichen and Xichen was in love with him. god bless the cql xiyao agenda.
A song that reminds of that character: lying beast by run river north - it reminds me very much of what he would think of himself esp. towards the end (and guanyin temple)
An unpopular opinion about that character: he and Mingjue's relationship could not have been fixed, or at least not without considerable effort on Mingjue's part, post-Sunshot and especially around the time of the stairs before JGY starts playing turmoil. JGY did not need to put more effort into it! he was already putting effort into it! Mingjue's worldview is fundamentally incompatible with JGY's existence, frankly. It never mattered how hard he tried to mend the relationship because Mingjue would always see him as a liar who was trying to manipulate him, and the sworn brotherhood was not a good idea, Xichen, good god.
Favorite picture: all of them but especially these. i support his wrongs (he has never done anything wrong ever in his life). he is the prettiest man alive and yet!! he suffers! but oh god his thousand yard stare after Mingjue kicks him down the stairs...

Childhood friends wangxian who suddenly are ripped apart for some reason or another and ultimately lose contact. LWJ, of course, is completely distraught. LXC sees this and feels for his didi. He not only lost his best friend but also the first person he ever loved.
LWJ spends years grappling with his grief and as time goes on, LXC starts to worry. His didi isn't going out and meeting anyone, his didi hasn't dated at all or even had any hookups. This is very strange and concerning to him (an allosexual/alloromantic polyamorous person)
Eventually, LXC starts to hint at LWJ to go out and meet people. Make friends and "maybe you'll meet someone you like." But LWJ is disinterested. LXC eventually starts bringing LWJ out with him and pointing out some people he thinks his didi might like, but nothing.
Finally, LXC can't stand seeing his little brother so hung up on a boy he never even had a relationship with years later and sets up a date for LWJ with MXY (who he met through NMJ's little brother)
LWJ apologies to MXY and says he is not interested in dating and turns him away.
Then, LWJ finds his brother looking at him with disappointment. LXC tells him that he can't keep being so hung up on WWX and he just needs to get over him and move on. LWJ blinks entirely confused. He then explains to his brother that that's not the problem.
He will always love WWX and carry that love with him, just as he carries his love for their mother with him. He may never see WWX again, but that doesn't matter. It doesn't matter if he ever gets to be with him in a romantic or sexual way either. He loves him.
But his lack of interest in sex and dating isn't because of that. He is just on the asexual and aromantic spectrums. He is completely content to not be with anyone and genuinely can't see himself wanting to be with anyone but WWX if he had to be with someone.
LXC is shocked. He hadn't realized that was really a thing and feels bad that he kept pushing that on his didi. He apologizes and promises to research more about it and to be a better, more supportive brother.
Then, sometime later, wangxian meet again by chance.
They rekindle their friendship and gradually fall into an easy relationship. LWJ doesn't have to explain his feelings to WWX because WWX is the same way.
----------
Anyway, I might try and write out a fic for this some day. Aroace wangxian my beloved 🥺🖤

its so interesting to me that there is this divide in how people-who-prefer-JFM talk compared to people-who-prefer-YZY among the lotus pier fandom (specifically referring to MDZS fans who spend a lot of time headcanoning, theorizing, and writing about WWX, JYL, JC, JFM and YZY as a household, and the dynamics of Yunmeng Jiang as a sect)
in many posts by people-who-prefer-JFM there is a lot more leeway about his motivations, and generally hes given more space for the possibility of other styles of behavior under different circumstances.
The language around JFM is often loose and accommodating. It "seems" like he wanted this; He "tries" to do this; "Maybe if-"; He "could" have done this. It's often framed around how other characters perceive and react to him, rather than addressing him as a cause.
The language around YZY is much more concrete. Very much so "YZY did this, because she is [this] way". The framing is around her actions and how she makes people respond. The fault lies with her. There is no room for hypothetical, and everyone seems to know EXACTLY how she would behave outside the confines of the story despite that being literally impossible. There is no what if, only what is.
Part of this is of course because YZY is more verbose, and thus we have more insight into how she thinks as a character, but I think it goes beyond that as well.
Because people who tend to favor YZY, or at least express more interest in YZY, will have similarly loose and accommodating language when theorycrafting about her, but unlike people-who-prefer-JFM, they tend to still apply that loose language to JFM as well.
There is space for them to be different, or more complex, than what is presented to us.
And this often trickles down to how people talk about WWX and JC respectively as well. WWX is the MOST verbose character in the novel, not just because the entire book is from his POV, but also because he just doesn't STFU (and I love that for him). But JC is more withdrawn and we don't get nearly as much insight to his thought process (although there is still quite a bit).
You would think that'd mean that JC would receive more accommodating/loose interpretive language due to vagueness, while the understanding and descriptions of WWX would be much more concrete but that still isn't the case.
Instead WWX gets slotted into the same more-forgiving category as JFM, while JC gets a much more strict, inflexible interpretation like YZY (unsurprising when taking their characterization into account that they'd be paired together).
People just don't talk about JYL enough for her to even be included 😭
