Ceremonial clothes of the great Rabbi Yossef David Sintzheim at the Grand Sanhedrin of Napoleon in 1807.
The Grand Sanhedrin was a Jewish high court convened in Europe by Napoleon to give legal sanction to the principles expressed by an assembly of Jewish notables in answer to the twelve questions submitted to it by the government. The name was chosen to imply that the Grand Sanhedrin had the authority of the original Sanhedrin that had been the main legislative and judicial body of the Jewish people in classical antiquity and late antiquity.
Yossef David Sintzheim was the chief rabbi of Strasbourg, president of Napoleon’s Sanhedrin, and one of the most famous French rabbis under Napoleon I.
He was the first chief rabbi of France and his burial in the Père Lachaise cemetery attests to his importance in the eyes of his generation. Himself from a line of rabbis, he devoted his life to study, married Cerf Berr’s sister around 1765 and in 1785 became rector of the Yeshivah of Bischheim. Forced to flee during the Terror, he subsequently became rabbi of Strasbourg and after being designated to participate in the assembly of notables convened by Napoleon in 1806, he was named president of Napoleon’s Sanhedrin. The inventory of Sintzheim’s effects at his death lists four rabbi’s robes, one in silk and the others velvet, as well as 2 horned hats. Its owner, Rabbi Nathan Rephael Auerbach, a direct descendant of Yossef David Sintzheim, attested that these clothes were passed down from generation to generation until they reached him.

Philo’s record of the Jews complaining
Josephus, as we have seen, records crowds appealing directly to Pilate over a contentious matter. According to all four Gospels, it is a crowd led by the Sanhedrin that assembles before the praetorium in Jerusalem to appeal directly to Pilate for Christ to be executed (Matthew 27:17; Mark 15:8; Luke 23:1; John 18:28). Philo’s record of the Jews complaining over Pilate’s head to Caesar about Pilate substantiates the Gospel of John’s record of the Jews’ threat that Pilate’s failure to execute Christ for claiming to be a king will reach Emperor Tiberius’ ears (John 19:12). This in turn explains why all the Gospel writers record that though Pilate saw Christ as innocent and tried to absolve him, he was intimidated by the crowd that not only could appeal against his decision, but could also riot (Matthew 27:24; Mark 15:15; Luke 23:23; John 19:15-16). With a track record of mistakes in his handling of the Jews, Pilate could ill afford another diplomatic incident.

Today we celebrate the Righteous Joseph of Arimathea. Saint Joseph was part of the Sanhedrin, but refused to take part in the council that condemned Christ to death. After the Crucifixion, Saint Joseph boldly asked Pontius Pilate for the body of Christ which he took and buried in a narrow grave, one which he had carved for himself. After the Resurrection, Saint Joseph travelled all over the known world preaching the Gospel of Christ. He reposed peacefully in Britain at an old age. May he intercede for us always + #saint #joseph #arimathea #josephofarimathea #saintjoseph #christ #jesus #jesuschrist #crucifixion #sanhedrin #counsel #counselor #christian #pilate #pontiuspilate #resurrection #preach #preacher #gospel #britain #england #repose #orthodox #saintoftheday (at Glastonbury) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cgpmrkcv5oA/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

25-3-2024 : During this Lenten-Time before Easter I've read the Bible-related fiction novel "l'Evangile selon Pilate" (in its German translation) by the Alsacian author Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt. Apparently it seems that this highly inspiring and thought-provoking book has not yet been released in English (?), though Schmitt's own web-site shows that translations into many other languages have already been published. If you are anyhow interested in topics such as Christianity, Judaism, and/or the ancient Roman Empire, and if you are able to read in any of the other languages listed on Schmitt's web-site, then I can definitely recommend "the Gospel according to Pilate" most highly to you. ==========

Winning Souls, Not Arguments
When we are treated unfairly or even insulted or abused for our faith in Jesus, it stings and we want to defend ourselves. There is a time to speak, but there is also a time for silence. Jesus can show us what time it is.

JEWISH COUNCIL OF SEVENTY, OR SANHEDRIN -- KJV (King James Version) Bible Verse List Visit https://www.billkochman.com/VerseLists/ to see more. "And he said unto Moses, Come up unto the LORD, thou, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel; and worship ye afar off . . . Then went up Moses, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel:" Exodus 24:1, 9, KJV "And the LORD said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with thee . . . And Moses went out, and told the people the words of the LORD, and gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them round about the tabernacle. And the LORD came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease." Numbers 11:16, 24-25, KJV "And he said unto me, Go in, and behold the wicked abominations that they do here. So I went in and saw; and behold every form of creeping things, and abominable beasts, and all the idols of the house of Israel, pourtrayed upon the wall round about. And there stood before them seventy men of the ancients of the house of Israel, and in the midst of them stood Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan, with every man his censer in his hand; and a thick cloud of incense went up. Then said he unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen what the ancients of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in the chambers of his imagery? for they say, The LORD seeth us not; the LORD hath forsaken the earth." Ezekiel 8:9-12, KJV In the New Testament, we find the counterpart to these Seventy Elders in such verses as the following; however, they were definitely not the same God-fearing people who comprised the Sanhedrin under Moses' leadership. If they had been, they wouldn't have killed Jesus Christ: "But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire." Matthew 5:22, KJV "Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death;" Matthew 26:59, KJV "And straightway in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him to Pilate." Mark 15:1, KJV "And when they heard that, they entered into the temple early in the morning, and taught. But the high priest came, and they that were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought." Acts 5:21, KJV "On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them." Acts 22:30, KJV Please note that the word "council" is derived from the Greek form of the word "Sanhedrin", which is transliterated from Greek as "sunedrion". After being arrested
After being arrested, the Truth was first led to a man named Annas, a corrupt former high priest of the Jews. Annas broke numerous Jewish laws during the trial, including holding the trial in his house, trying to induce self-accusations against the defendant, and striking the defendant, who had been convicted of nothing at the time. After Annas, the Truth was led to the reigning high priest, Caiaphas, who happened to be Annas’s son-in-law. Before Caiaphas and the Jewish Sanhedrin, many false witnesses came forward to speak against the Truth, yet nothing could be proved and no evidence of wrongdoing could be found. Caiaphas broke no fewer than seven laws while trying to convict the Truth: (1) the trial was held in secret; (2) it was carried out at night; (3) it involved bribery; (4) the defendant had no one present to make a defense for Him; (5) the requirement of 2-3 witnesses could not be met; (6) they used self-incriminating testimony against the defendant; (7) they carried out the death penalty against the defendant the same day. All these actions were prohibited by Jewish law. Regardless, Caiaphas declared the Truth guilty because the Truth claimed to be God in the flesh, something Caiaphas called blasphemy. When morning came, the third trial of the Truth took place, with the result that the Jewish Sanhedrin pronounced the Truth should die. However, the Jewish council had no legal right to carry out the death penalty, so they were forced to bring the Truth to the Roman governor at the time, a man named Pontius Pilate.
