💖 & 🧠 for the fic writer ask game please? <3
hi hello!!! thank you for the ask!!! :) <3
💖 ahhhhh, tough question! i would say my fight scenes or writing action, whatever word you use to describe that type of writing lol. i once got told my fights were pretty realistic and fun to read, and i ran with it (absolutely inflated my ego ngl), i kind of pride myself on them though it also means they have to be perfect
🧠 oh man, i have a few that are just outlines but most usually have a few drabbles or scenes associated with them that i tinker with when bored. BUT i do have a spider-cat jaydick au that is only worldbuilding notes at this point (and im not actively working on), so please enjoy my notes on that :)
(stuffing it under a keep reading thingy bc its a lot, sorry!)
Spider-Cat Jaydick AU
Working Summary: After the death/retirement of Spider-Woman Barbara Gordon, Gotham hits a dark patch. But unfortunately or fortunately, another radioactive spider bites Jaye Todd-Wayne on a school field trip to Fox Corp/Wayne Tech. Knowing Crime Alley, Jaye’s home (despite being adopted by billionaire Bruce Wayne), is in trouble without a Spider guardian, Jaye decides to take it upon herself to be the next Spider.
It’s not without its…problems.
Barbara as Spider-Woman Main Cast
Barbara Gordon = Spider-Gwen/Spider-Woman aka Gwen Stacy (Earth-65)
Commissioner Jim Gordon = NYPD Chief George Stacy
Harvey Bullock = Captain Frank Castle
Renee Montoya = Detective Jean DeWolff
Dinah Drake Lance = Mary Jane Watson (of the Mary Janes Band)
Alysia Yeoh = Betty Brant (of the Mary Janes Band)
Kori Anders = Glory Grant (of the Mary Janes Band)
Ted Kord = Peter Parker (aka Lizard, Earth-65)
Luke Fox = Harry Osborn (close friend to Gwen & Peter, Earth-65)
Lucius Fox = Norman Osborn
Jaye Todd-Wayne as Spider-Woman II or Ghost Spider Main Cast
Jaye Todd-Wayne = Spider-Woman II or Ghost Spider (aka Miles Morales)
Talia al Ghul and Bruce Wayne = Rio and Jefferson (Davis) Morales
Damian al Ghul = Billie Morales (younger sibling to Miles)
Willis Todd = Prowler aka Aaron Davis (uncle to Miles)
Tim Drake = Ganke Lee
Stephanie Brown = Starling aka Tiana Toomes
Arthur Brown = Vulture aka Adrian Toomes
Dick Grayson = Black Cat aka Felicia Hardy
Selina Kyle = Black Fox (mentor to Felicia and Tamara)
Victor Stone = Boris Korpse
Donna Troy = Bruno Grainger
Roy Harper = Tamara Blake
Raven = Odessa Drake
Main Villains
Joker & Harley Quinn = Carnage and Venom
Cluemaster (Arthur Brown) = Vulture
Two-Face (Harvey Dent) = Green Goblin or Two-Faced Goblin
The Penguin (Oswald Cobblepot) = Kingpin
Poison Ivy (Pamela Isley) = Doc Ock
Selina Kyle = Black Fox
Bane = Rhino
Black Mask (Roman Sionis) = Mister Negative
Mr. Freeze (Victor Fries) = Electro or Scorpion
Clayface = Hydro-Man or Swarm
Scarecrow = Sandwoman (whose sand causes nightmares from Earth 2099)
Firefly = Shocker
Mad Hatter = Mysterio
Ted Kord = Lizard I (deceased)
Killer Croc = Lizard II
Deathstroke (Slade Wilson) = Kraven the Hunter
Grant Wilson = Grim Hunter (Kraven’s first son and Kraven the Hunter II)
Rose Wilson* = Ana Kravinoff (Kraven’s daughter)
Carmine Falcone/Falcone Crime Family = Hammerhead
Maroni Crime Family = Tombstone
Moxon’s Empire/Lew Moxon = Silvermane
*Originally had Rose Wilson as Deadpool but I think she would work better as Kraven's daughter
Other Cast: (could potential appear or be saved for later)
Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman) = Kate Kane
Cindy Moon (Silk) = Cassandra Cain
Matt Murdock (Daredevil) = Helena Bertinelli*
Madame Web (Cassandra Webb) = Ma Gunn
The Tinkerer (based on the game Spider Man) = Lonnie Machlin or Dana Harlowe
*Helena could either be Daredevil or Glory Brant (of the Mary Janes Band), whether you want to have her as a vigilante or just a civilian
Additional Notes:
Barbara’s main villains were Doc Ock, Vulture, Lizard, Shocker, and Mysterio. The only villains present during her tenure were: Doc Ock, Vulture, Lizard I, Mysterio, Sandwoman, Kingpin, Black Cat, Silvermane, Tombstone, Hammerhead, Electro, Swarm, Prowler, and Shocker.
>>Barbara knew Kraven the Hunter was active and a villain via Dick, but never fought him personally.
>>Barbara mainly fought her big three: Doc Ock, Shocker, and Lizard. She also handled a lot of mafia/gang related crimes, in conjunction with her father’s work.
>>Barbara’s toughest battles were with Lizard I (mainly emotional) and Doc Ock.
Jaye’s main villains are Green Goblin/Two Faced Goblin, Kingpin, Mister Negative, Venom & Carnage. The villains present during her tenure are: Doc Ock, Vulture, Lizard II, Mysterio, Sandwoman, Black Cat, Kingpin, Shocker, Electro, Rhino, Venom & Carnage, Kraven the Hunter, Grim Hunter & Ana Kravinoff, Prowler, Swarm, Mister Negative, Hammerhead, Tombstone, and Silvermane.
>>Jaye mainly fights her big four: Two-Faced Goblin, Kingpin, Mister Negative, and Venom & Carnage. Jaye also handles a lot of gang related activity but for different reasons than Barbara--whereas Barbara acted very much like a police detective, Jaye was trying to protect Crime Alley (aka Barbara worked with the police and Jaye does not).
>>Black Cat, Doc Ock, Lizard II, and Ana Kravinoff are technically “villains” but Jaye has good working relationships with them.
>>Jaye’s toughest battles are Venom & Carnage and Two-Faced Goblin (mainly emotional).
>>Jaye was adopted around 12-13, and grew up with Bruce and Talia (and later on, baby Damian), but also Uncle Harvey, Bruce’s best friend. Harvey, unfortunately, will be attacked and scarred by Tombstone (Maroni) and become the Two-Faced Goblin.
>>Unclear if Jaye knows Willis is Prowler.
>>Madame Web and Starling are newest additions to the hero community in Jaye’s time, and did not meet Barbara. Starling (Steph) knew of her because of her father and Madame knew her through her clairvoyance, but neither of them had ever met her face to face or interacted with one another.
And the lil drabble that started it all:
Out of all the leftover characters and remnants from Barbara’s time as Spidey, Black Cat is the only one she doesn’t mind.  Granted, he’s still a pain in the ass.  But, he also doesn’t try to kill her. Maim? Maybe, if she gets on his bad side. Use as a cat scratcher? More times than she can count, for no reason beyond “he was bored.”  He’s never gone for the jugular though and that she can appreciate.   And even she can admit, Barbara had good taste in men.

Note
could you make a list of the rogues bday's and birthyears?
I sure can!  Bear in mind when I write Lawfulverse it usually exists around Jonathan Crane's most active years, that's from his 2011 dismissal from Gotham University (at 28) to his quasi-retirement in 2019, following his rather tragic relationship with John Constantine (at 36).  I do write content beyond those years but 2011-2019 are the primary dates we're looking at.  Waller's Gotham Files, for reference, are from 2015.
Secondarily, bear in mind that these birth years are not the same for the Gotham Rogues Kids AU, which I'm still workshopping.
Here's the full list, under the cut for ease of reading:
Mr Bloom (Zachariah Bloom): March 21, 1993
Lock-Up (Lyle Bolton): October 4, 1984
Penguin (Oswald Cobblepot): February 28, 1981
Scarecrow (Jonathan Crane): October 31, 1983
Baby Doll (Mary Dahl): August 5, 1985
Calendar Man (Julian Day): December 31, 1993
Two-Face (Harvey Dent): February 7, 1985
Mr. Freeze (Victor Fries): July 18, 1923
Solomon Grundy (Cyrus Gold): September 22, 1901
Poison Ivy (Pamela Isley): April 22, 1984
Killer Croc (Waylon Jones): June 24, 1992
Clayface (Basil Karlo): July 18, 1996

batfam au |  to kill a bird headcanon
after jason's death when bruce goes off the rails, he doesn’t accept from dick or alfred, who both come back to help. tim still comes to wayne manor but he’s not accepted as robin. he makes a presence for himself in the cave though, getting along with dick, alfred, and ace and instant-messaging babs. bruce likes him as well as a grieving man can and trains him a little in boxing and medicine just because he asks. bruce eventually dies in an explosion set by scarecrow in cape carmine. joker goes catatonic soon after (actually canon). dick becomes batman and makes tim his robin because he thinks tim needs it and because he doesn't think he can be batman alone. steph and tim meet and become close friends (and maybe date) but she isn't brought into anything. during no man's land, cass is made batgirl by babs and adopted by dick, gaining a brother-sister relationship with tim. around this time, steph is also brought into things and the group get a lot closer to babs, helena bertinelli, dinah lance, and selina kyle. when jason comes back just after no man's land, this is the line-up:
dick grayson-wayne as batman, member of the jla
tim drake as robin, member of the teen titans
cass cain as batgirl
steph brown as spoiler, member of the teen titans
barbara gordon as oracle, leader of the birds of prey and member of the jla
helena bertinelli as huntress, member of the birds of prey
dinah lance as black canary, member of the jla and the birds of prey
selina kyle as catwoman
the under the red hood arc goes very differently, mostly because rose wilson decided to move to gotham (thanks to being friends with tim and being trained by dick and thinking they need help because of the whole no man's land thing) and she honestly doesn't Give A Fuck and just, decides immediately that jason Needs To Die. cass and steph both only care about jason’s activities because he hurt tim.
he joins the family again a lot sooner, is what i'm trying to say.
when damian comes, he gets very attached to dick, as par for course, but every single member of the batfam is very fucking clear on the whole Don't Kill Tim thing. people actually believe tim when he says mordecai is bruce and he doesn't go through all that pain and suffering alone. the ric grayson and cass'-not-to-be-named-arc do not happen. tim gives up robin to damian amiably and cass is now black bat and steph batgirl. duke Exists despite the lack of ric grayson. the line-up now goes like this:
dick grayson-wayne as batman, member of the jla
damian wayne-grayson as robin, member of the teen titans
cass wayne* as black bat, member of the birds of prey
steph brown as batgirl, member of the teen titans and the birds of prey
barbara gordon as oracle, leader of the birds of prey and member of the jla
helena bertinelli as huntress, member of the birds of prey
dinah lance as black canary, member of the jla and the birds of prey
selina kyle as catwoman
tim grayson-drake as nightwing, member of the teen titans
jason todd-wayne as red hood
duke thomas** as spoiler, member of the teen titans and the birds of prey
*note: note the last names changes among the characters
**duke thomas eventually becomes duke thomas-grayson
possible ships to include (feel free to make it gen or write ships not on the list): jaydick, selina/dinah, duke/tim, timcass, timstephcass, timsteph, dickbabs, helena/babs

ML x Batman: Arkham’s princess AU headcanons part 1
Next part
Here’s the first part details about my “Arkham’s princess AU”!
This part focus more on when Marinette just got to Gotham, the next part will focus on her daily life in Gotham and how she handle her duties as Ladybug at the same time.
Some of thoses ideas have been suggested by @itskarmalone (thank you by the way! ^^)
Warning: This AU content salt don’t like don’t read and English is not my first language so sorry if it’s confusing.
-After all the event of Marinette’s birth, all the villans that protected Sabine became unofficial (thought some official) godparents of Marinette.
-Thank to the changes and new therapies Bridgette introduced in Arkham, the Rogues showed good progress, yes they are still criminals but they are way less rutless and psychotic than before, heck, even the Joker become saner.
-Bridgette has been able to make Joker’s and Harley’s relationship way more healthier thank to many therapy sessions, they’re not “lovers” anymore and are now more like “friends” or at least “acquaintances on friendly therms”.
-Marinette knew the story of her birth, her parents told her about it when she was 5 years old when after a day at school on which some of her classmates talked about their godparents, she asked Tom and Sabine if she got Godparents too.
-Once the “godparents” found out that the “Arkham Princess” was back in Gotham they warned Bridgette (Harleen and Pamela in a lunch meeting) and Batfam (letter by Riddler in a Jack-in-the-box made by Joker) that they will sometimes “kidnap” Marinette for a few hours and tutor her the basics to help their godchild to grow. Batman was skeptical at first but Joker insisted that he or one of his birds could hang out with them to supervise the tutoring and to join in the lecture if they wanted.
-The classes goes by the following:
Harley Quinn: Psychology and street smarts.
Poison Ivy: Botanic.
The Riddler: Calligraphy and Linguistics
Mad Hatter: Literature
Two-Face: Law and Criminal Justice
Joker: Workshop (mainly engineering)
Mr. Freeze: Science (focus on cryo-chemestry)
Bane: Languages
Scarecrow: Science
Kite Man: Aerodynamics
Killer croc: aquatic/combat sports
Catwoman: gymnastic
The Penguin: Economic and business studies
-Catwoman  didn’t meet Marinette when she was a baby, she hear of her from the other Rogues who often were rambling about an “Arkham’s princess”.
-She officially meet her as Selina Kyle through the Waynes since she and Bruce are dating. After chatting with Marinette Selina was charmed and she decided to made her her honorary “kitten”.
- Marinette knew they’re criminals, but they were the ones that protected her mother and helping her giving birth to her so she has complete trust on them.
-The Rogues, with her parents conscent, give Marinette ways to be stronger:
Pamela give her a potion that make her imune to all kind of toxines
Joker inject her a serum which make her imune to his laughing gaz and joker venum
Mr.Freeze enhancing her body to endure conditions more extreme for the comon human (takes her longer than average to suffer from heat stroke and hypothermia)
-Marinette is naturally imune to the fear gaz, the Rogues find out when she has been exposed to the gaz by accident and when a panicked Scarecrow was about to give her the cure he will notice that between the time Marinette was exposed to the fear gaz and the time she got the cure she didn’t react at all as if the gaz didn’t work which confuse everyone. She explain to them that she faced worst so don’t had to worry about the gaz, in hope to reassure her godparents, in particulary poor Scarecrow who feared he traumatised her because of his gaz.
- But it didn’t reassured the rogues, on the contrary, this made them freak out.
-<<- It’s okay uncle Jonathan it was an accident! And beside I endured worst so don’t worry about your ga...>> <<- WHAT?! WHO HURT YOU? WHO’S CORPSE WE WILL HAD TO BURY?!>>
-At the same times in Paris Lila and Hawkmoth got a sinister chill in their spine having, for some reason, a bad feeling about the future.
-The Rogues never, and I say NEVER, harmed Marinette it’s a golden rule among them: no harm of any kind must happen to their little princess
-The only “thing” they did to her is “branded” her with a symbol she wear on her clothes.
- It’s a symbol mixing the letters J for Joker, I fr Ivy, H for Harley/Hatter, K for Killer, P for Penguin and F for Freeze/Face. The letters were under a halo as well as wings on the begining of the J and at the end of the F (the shape of the right wing makes the F look like an R for Riddler and on the left wing is lettered an S for Scarecrow).
-The Rogues thought that it was the only way to warn rival gangs and enemies (as well as the Justice League) that if they mess with their god child, her godparents and Batman will hunt them down and depending which one gets them first will be the reason why they’re left alive or killed in sight.

DC: The High-School AU: The Series: The Staff (the musical)
So I finally cast the school staff and teachers for my DC High School AU, which I thought some of you would have some fun with! I took the subject list from a fairly fancy looking private school, because only schools you have to pay for have their subject lists online, so I’m probably offering way more classes than your average state school, but hey, it’s my AU and I wanted to cram in as many supervillains, obscure heroes, and bad jokes as possible.
Admin & Staff
Principle - Amanda Waller
Deputy Principle & Treasurer - Noah Kuttler (the Calculator)
Nurse - Myra Mason (she was Dr Midnite’s nurse and love interest in the 40s & 50s, then got fridged, but I’m unfridging her and giving her a job with much better survival prospects)
Councillor - Ethel Peabody (she’s a psychiatrist from the Gotham TV show, and also in my headcanon, Amanda Waller’s sister)
Librarian - Stanislaus Johns (The Librarian. I considered bookworm for this job but he’s literally called the Librarian, what was I supposed to do, not use him?)
Admin Staff - Laura Conway (Superman supporting cast and occaisional vampire), Mabel Martin (Riddler’s secretary), Theresa Collins (Goldstar, also Booster Gold’s secretary)
Business
Loren Jupiter (aka Mr Jupiter the richest and therefore most thrustworthy man in the world) - Business 101, Business Law, Entrepreneurship
Wesley Dodds (Sandman) - Business Communications
Annabeth Chamberlain (Brimstone) - Marketing, Hospitality & Tourism (she doesn’t work in tourism, but I figure anyone who can waitress while also having the power to set people on fire and damn them to hell and keeps her job probably knows a whole lot about customer service)
Family & Consumer Science
Miss Tribb (Lobo’s childhood teacher who inexplicably survived the extinction of their species) - Childhood Developement, Early Childhood Education
Neil Richards (The Mad Mod) - Texiles/Sewing, Fashion
Tenzil Kem (Matter-Eater Lad) - Food & Nutrition
Finance
Noah Kuttler (The Calculator) - Personal Finance
Foreign Languages
Matron Bertinelli (Nu52 Huntress, who I’m declaring a sepperate character and the aunt of pre-52 Huntress because they’re radically different characters and I like both of them) - ASL, Italian
Chang Jie-Ru (Nu52 Yo-Yo) - Chinese, AP Chinese
Yolanda Montez (Wildcat II) - Spanish, AP Spanish
Barbara Minerva (Cheetah) - Latin
Health Sciences
Myra Mason - Emergency Medical Responder training
Charles McNider (Dr Midnite) - Anatomy & Physiology, Health Class
IT
Brian Durlin (Savant) - Computer Programming, Web Dev
Jennifer Lyn-Hayden (Jade) - Digital Art 101
Arnold Wesker (Ventriloquist) - 3D Animation, 3D Graphics (I don’t know why but the idea of Wesker as an animator just tickled me. Obviously his real passion is stop-motion, but he learnt 3D because there were more jobs)
English (the fancy private school called this ‘language arts’ which is so prentious it makes me feel slightly nauseous)
Wesley Dodds (Sandman) - English Language, AP English Language
Rac Shade (Shade the Changing Man) - English Literature, AP English Literature
Chloe Sullivan (the worst character in the Smallville TV show, a hotly contested position) - English Language, Communications 101, supervises the School Paper and the Yearbook
Shelly Gaynore (The Whip III) - Englist Literature, Creative Writing
Basil Karlo (Clayface) - Intro to Shakespeare
Nick Scratch (officially his supervillain name is just Scratch, but I refuse to consider that a code-name, looking at you Drake) - Communications 102: Public Speaking
Mathematics (which has a 100% villain make-up, which seems accurate from what I remember of high-school maths)
Noah Kuttler (The Calculator, because I think I’m funny) - Pre-Calc, Calculus, AP Calculus
Harlan Graves (The Underbroker) - Stats, Algebra 1, Algebra 2
Angelo Bend (Angle Man, becuase I know I’m funny) - Geometry, Trigonometry
PE (I realise this is probably too many PE teachers but there are a lot more caonical althetes than just about any other job in the DCU except maybe scientist)
Lawrence Crock (Sportsmaster, you knew this was coming) - Gym, Weight Training, coaches Baseball, Basketball, Tennis & Hockey
Lisa Snart (Golden Glider) - joint-coaches Cheerleading, coaches the Drill Team, Wrestling
Randy Hanrahan (Stallion) - PE, joint-coaches Cheerleading & Cross-Country, coaches Football
William Everett (Amazing Man) - PE, joint-coaches Cross-Country, coaches Track & Field
Matron Bertinelli (Huntress, sort of) - coaches Soccer & gymnastics
Performing Arts
Lisa Snart (Golden Glider) - Dance
Hartley Rathaway (Pied Piper) - Music 101, Music Theory, Composition, teaches Guitar & Percussion
Isaac Bowin (The Fiddler) - Music 101, AP Music Theory, leads Jazz Band, Orchestra, Marching Band
Siobhan Smyth (Silver Banshee) - part-time, leads the Choir and teaches singing
Basil Karlo (Clayface) - Theatre, Theatre 101
Simon Trent (Grey Ghost) - Theatre, Theatre 101, Film Studies
Ted Kord (Blue Beetle) - Theatre Tech
Mary Louise Dahl (Baby-Doll, from B:TAS) - Film Studies, Video Production
Betty Bates (Lady-at-Law, who is technically owned by DC now due to corporate buy-outs) - Debate
Science (do you have any idea how hard it is to pin down areas of specialisation for comic book scientists? TNT is on this list entirely because he’s the only actual honest-to-god professional chemist I could find)
Kirk Langstrom (ManBat) - Biology, AP Biology
Pamela Isley (Poison Ivy) - Biology, Environmental Science
Thomas “Tex” Thomas (TNT) - Chemistry
Achilles Milo (Professor Milo, again not really much of a code name) - Chemistry, AP Chemistry
Will Magnus (I refuse to even dignify it as a code-name) - Physics, Earth Sciences
Ray Palmer (The Atom) - Physics, AP Physics
Adam Strange (DC is just doing this to fuck with me, personally) - Astronomy
Social Studies & Humanities
Barbara Minerva (Cheetah) - World History
Maxie Zeus (ffs) - World History, AP World History (fun fact, Maxie was canonically just a normal history teacher before he got lightning powers, became convinced he was Zeus incarnate, and set out to become a criminal, making him my favourite DC mobster by a country mile)
Terry Long (aka one of the only characters to really deserve to get fridged) - US History, AP European History
Eobard Thawne (every code-name he has is stupid, but lets just go with Reverse-Flash as the least awful option) - US History, AP US History
Nick Scratch - US Government, AP US Government, AP Comparative Politics
Rex Tyler (Hourman) - AP Art History
Magdalene Kyle-Burton (Sister Zero, she’s a sometimes-nun and a sometimes-sister to Catwoman) - Comparative Religion
Michael Carter (Booster Gold) - Economics, AP Microeconomics, AP Macroeconomics
Jonathan Crane (Scarecrow) - Psychology (there is exactly one heroic psychiatrist in all of comics, and I’d already used Dr Fate elsewhere. Scarecrow seemed like the least bad option of the remaining pool for being around children, and he does at least have teaching experience)
Adam Strange - Sociology
Betty Bates (Lady-at-Law) - Law
Richard Occult/Rose Psychic (it’s complicated, lets just say Dr Occult and leave it at that) - part-time, Criminal Justice
Technology & Engineering
Ted Kord (Blue Beetle) - Electronics, CAD, Woodworking
John Henry Irons (Steel) - Engineering, Metalworking
Will Magnus - Robotics
Visual Arts
Linda Lee/Danvers (she’s Supergirl, but I’m making her a different character from Kara Danvers/Kent because the DCU is really short on artists and I needed someone to teach the damn class, although the only thing that really makes her distinct from other supergirls is that she fucked a horse that one time and IDK how that will translate into a personality...) - Ceramics, AP Studio Art: 3D Design, Art 101
Rex Tyler (Hourman) - Graphic Design, Drawing, AP Studio Art: Drawing
Jack Knight (Starman) - Painting, AP Studio Art: 2D Design, Art 101
Jennifer Lyn-Hayden (Jade) - Photography
So there you go - I’ll be honest I still don’t really understand how high-schools in the USA work, and I have no idea what Design studio art even is so I kind of assigned those ones at random, but now it’s done and cannot be changed.
As always this universe is open to prompts so if you want a chapter focussing on any of these characters just drop me an ask or a comment and I’ll see what I can do. Making Dr Occult & Rose Psychic a single gender-fluid person is already on my list to do, since that’s who I thought they were for a longest time when I started reading comics and I’m still kind of annoyed that isn’t canonically what’s going on.

CMW2/Trumpetnista: True North
Tumblr media
Summary from FFN: CANON COMPLIANT AU WITH HEAVY SPOILERS FOR THE END OF SEASON 4 AND THE FIRST EPS OF 5; After the events of 'Not You, Too', Bruce is ecstatic that Selina is alive but he is about to truly lose it. Being the True North of his life, Selina enlists the one person who loves him more than her to help him escape Gotham's ruins.;Rated for words & imagery;4th in my 2019 SSS Project
Words from the Hooded GOTHAMITE: Your eyes are not deceiving you, folks. It's a double header! I'm really gonna knuckle down and update/finish at least one of my established stories in another fandom after this one, I promise but again, what the Muses want, they get. If I don't cooperate with them, they go away for ages. They really want Bruce and Selina right now. It is what it is.
Selina and Alfred's bond is one of my favorite on the show. I've always loved a good 'started from the bottom, now we're here' plotline and I'm glad that they've united. Other than Jim, they're all Bruce has so it's best that they get along. They've gone from enemies to frenemies to family and I really, really hope that the BatFamily can become some kind of an official thing in GOTHAM's endgame. If not, that's what fanfic is for.
Again, I just want everyone to be happy. Is that too much to ask?
Anyway, here's the follow up to 'Not You, Too' and after I do the aforementioned updating/finishing in my other fandoms, I will get started on my next big Baby BatCat fics. There is a need and I will fulfill it!
Disclaimer: “Honestly, it’s not mine!”
"I once said that the only reason he wanted to be with me was because I was literally the only girl he knew. That myth is just busted all to pieces now, ain't it?"
"Completely. You're the love of his life."
"He's a masochist. And I'm an idiot because I love him back. One of those Tangs for me?"
"Yes."
"Any vodka in it?"
"Unfortunately, no."
"Don't worry. I'll swipe some Goose from Barbara later. I gotta go see Tabby. Pay my respects."
"I'm sorry for your loss, Selina."
"Are you?"
"You cared for her."
"She tried to kill Bruce. Like really, really tried."
"Everyone has."
Laughing still hurt like hell but Selina Kyle couldn't help but do so. It wasn't like Alfred Pennyworth was wrong. Every maniac worth their salt in Gotham took a crack at Bruce Wayne at least once before their temper tantrum was done. That was what he got for being an overly noble piece of shit like Jim Gordon. Not to say that Gordon wasn't a good man (not that she'd ever tell him so to his face) but to model one's life choices after him really wasn't the best idea. It led to so much trouble.
Hopping down from the roof's ledge aggravated her injuries but Selina welcomed the pain. She welcomed the fact that she could climb and jump again. Even when she had nothing, even when she was all alone, she had been able to move. She had been able to run, jump and be free. Jeremiah Valeska had taken that away from her. He had shot her, nearly ruined her, but fate in the form of Bruce had intervened. He had gone out and found a Cure for her. He had risked becoming a living garden from Ivy Pepper Version 3′s venom for her. He had saved her and in turn, she would do her best to save him.
Eventually, she wouldn't be able to. It went back to him being an overly noble piece of shit but damn it, she would try. Bruce didn't get to die on her, not for a long time.
"How are you feeling?"
"I look the way I feel, Lurch."
"So, like a walking piece of roadkill?"
"Fuck off."
And it was very clear that Selina could not die on him. It wasn't an option. Jeremiah Valeska and his crazy girlfriend bitch had tried to kill her. They had damned near blown her up but she had made it out. She had managed to get out of her restraints and had been in the process of climbing out of a window when the explosives went off. That had sent her flying and while there was a bit of a blank, she remembered the feeling of weightlessness, the impact with the truck, and more importantly, the feeling of needing to get home.
Home was Bruce. Whether they were in Wayne Manor, The Haven, or anywhere, Bruce was home. She needed to get her ass up, pull herself together enough to function, and get home. If Valeska went after her, it stood to reason that he was going to go the whole nine yards. Her, Gordon, Alfred, anyone positive in Bruce's life had a bulls-eye on them again. Valeska wanted to break him. He wanted to convert him to his special brand of madness and the circus freak probably wanted his body, too. Bruce was damned fine to look at, like one of those angels in museum paintings. He had been adorable before but puberty had been very good to him.
However, the only person who would be touching the art was her.
Even if Jeremiah wasn't crazier than the cow that jumped over the moon and blew it up, the age difference was not good. Jeremiah was in his mid-twenties. Bruce may be 40 years old in the head but he had just turned 18. Jeremiah's Evil Twin Jerome, may he forever rot and burn in Hell, had ruined his birthday party when he took over that concert with exploding neck bombs.
The cake had been damned good, though. God, Selina missed cake so much. It was still possible to find the ingredients or a done one but it was more trouble than it was worth. The energy would be put to better use finding medicine or ammo.
Anyway, it had taken some time but she had gotten to the Twelfth Precinct, only to find a broken Bruce Wayne. He had thought she had been murdered. Jeremiah had said she was dead and instead of breaking in the way the freak longed for, Bruce had beaten him to death with a chair.
Jeremiah Valeska was very much dead.
Selina had demanded to see the body, just to make sure he was gone, and it had been a mess. Absolutely justified but a mess, all the same. Jeremiah's girlfriend had been catatonic but when three unfortunate saps tried to transport her to Arkham, she had murdered them and ran. Word was that she The Dark Zone's leader now and she would 'continue her beloved's legacy' or some other nonsense like that. As long as the demented bitch left Bruce the hell alone, Selina didn't care.
She would never forget the way he looked when Bruce came out of Gordon's office.
He looked as if his whole world had been destroyed but reborn in front of his eyes. The wild look in his eyes, the way he was shaking? It was the warehouse with Scarecrow's Terror Gas all over again, only a thousand times worse. All Selina could do was touch him, tell him to breathe, tell him to look at her but he hadn't got it. It had taken seconds for him to get it but it had felt like hours. Seeing him like that? God, if the motherfucker wasn't already dead, Selina would've gone after him. He already had a target on him for the bullet to her spine but hurting Bruce, breaking Bruce...
The hug he had given her had been so painful but she didn't dare pull away, not until she was sure that he was back. The anguish and relief in his voice as he cried in her arms, even as he responded to her would haunt her forever.
It also put a very heavy responsibility on her.
She had to stay alive.
She had to keep her remaining 7 lives close to her because if she didn't?
"...Selina? Are you up here?"
"Hey, B. You want some Tang? There's no vodka in it but it's still pretty good."
"No, thank you. I...I woke up and you were gone."
"Sorry. I needed some air and you needed the sleep. I didn't mean to scare you. C'mere."
Bruce came to her and hugged her, hiding his face in her shoulder. It had been 2 days since her supposed demise and Selina knew that he would cling for quite a while. Afterwards, he would be even more protective of her and she had to get ready to deal with it. Not just from Bruce but from everyone. Even though Valeska was gone, eliminating one of Gotham's biggest problems, she and everyone else was far from safe. The government was still doing its best to avoid helping them, meaning that the city would continue to fall apart. Eventually, even the good people would start turning on each other for the sake of survival and then, where would they be?
"You two weren't fighting, were you?"
"Nah. Truce is still on."
"Good."
"You need to eat."
"I'm not hungry."
"I didn't ask if you were. You need to eat. I found a bunch of MREs and water. There's enough."
"Selina..."
"Look, I get it. You thought I was dead, went full on WrestleMania on Valeska, found out I wasn't dead, and had the panic attack to end all of them. You're stressed out. You're feeling guilty for caving that asshole's head in, which you really shouldn't, by the way, you're still sad because the city's fucked but let me tell you something: I'm still here. We're getting by as best we can until we can get outside help. Valeska had it coming to him and all not taking care of yourself is gonna do is make Alfred worry about you and piss me off. Do you wanna do that?"
"...no."
"You need to eat. And you need to sleep some more. I'll come down in a few minutes. I gotta bandage and ice my ribs, anyways. Eat. Talk to Gordon and get some damned sunlight, will you? You look even more like a vampire than usual."
Bruce let out a noise that was between a scoff and a laugh before looking between them.
"Anything to add, Alfred?"
"No, I think she covered things nicely."
"I don't know if I like this. You two ganging up on me..."
"Somebody has take the L. It might as well be us. Are you still here?"
"I'm going, I'm going..."
"Wait."
Stepping forward, Selina pulled him down into a tender kiss and pecked his forehead.
"Now, scram. Grab me some chili mac and a vanilla pudding."
Bruce looked at her fixedly, nodded, and headed for the staircase. He hesitated in the doorway and when he turned around, Selina gave him a tired but genuine smile. Relief visibly filled him at the sight and he was gone. Shaking her head, she let out a noise that was half sigh and half sob.
"For fuck's sake...Alfred, we've got to get him outta here. Enough is enough. I don't...he has been on the edge of the worst nervous breakdown ever since it all went down with his parents and now this shit, on top of all the other shit? We gotta get him the hell out of here, government bullshit be damned!"
"Agreed. How?"
"I dunno. I was hoping that you had an idea. All that gray hair. There ought to be some wisdom underneath it..."
"This gray hair used to be blonde."
"Oh Christ...don't tell me you were walking around looking like one of the bastards from The Bee Gees back in the day..."
"Okay, I won't."
"Ewww...I wanna see pics but ewww..."
"...we're all he's got. Us and Gordon and he won't leave."
"Gordon will help us get him out, though. Him, Bullock, and Foxy. Maybe even Barbara. She's always had a soft spot for him from back in the day. If not, she'll do it for me...or Gordon. Gross."
"Problem is that Bruce may refuse to leave. He sees Gotham as his responsibility."
"I'll change his mind about that."
"I don't think you're in enough good physical condition to do that, yet."
"First of all, where there's a will, there's a way. Secondly, you need to mind your business, Jack. I know you're his Guardian and I guess mine now but there are boundaries..."
"Apologies."
"...and third, I don't think getting him to bounce will be as hard as you think. He doesn't want to lose anyone else he loves to what's left of this place. That's us. If we get out, he'll get out. Of course, he'll come back here to help as soon as possible because he's an overly noble piece of shit..."
"He's our overly noble piece of shit."
"...I know but...if we stick together, we can pull it off. Truce is still on."
"For Bruce."
"For Bruce."

9:00 AM
Penelope arrived at her office to find it empty. She sighed, hung up her dark blue winter coat and walked over to her desk. Rationally, she knew she shouldn't expect to see Edward today. After Selina had texted her Sunday morning, she'd received only basic updates from her. He'd suffered a concussion and bruised ribs from his encounter with Jones but had received medical treatment. Apparently, after he'd been brought home, Edward had refused to see anyone. He hadn't called or answered his phone either. Selina and Cobblepot had been by a few times in the days since, but he'd refused to let them in. Penelope sat down at her desk and pulled out her schedule. She only was expecting two patients today, which gave her time to review her files from the latest case Gordon had asked her to consult on, not to mention reviewing her old notes from Arkham Asylum-
Penelope sighed and pushed her files away. Who was she kidding? She'd be lucky if she could concentrate on anything today. Her gaze wandered to her bookshelf, towards one old book in particular. She could just make out the text on the book's spine. Gotham University Psychology Department, 1993. She'd been thinking about that time in life a lot since Saturday night. A knock at her door brought her out of her thoughts. For a moment, she felt relief. Edward? "Come in!"
The door opened and Selina Kyle walked in, slamming it shut behind her. Penelope tried not to let her disappointment show. "Hello, Selina."
Selina nodded at her in acknowledgment before she sank in the seat Penelope had for her patients. "I saw Eddie today Doc."
Penelope leaned forward. "He let you in?"
Selina scoffed. "No, I picked the lock. I had to make sure he was still alive."
"How was he?"
Selina shot her a look and Penelope looked down at her desk. "Alright," she conceded. "That was a stupid question. How bad is he?"
Selina sighed. "He hasn't been eating much. I don't think he's been sleeping either. He was still wearing the pajamas I helped him in on Sunday. He still had that box on his coffee table with the articles about Spooky, but..."
Penelope looked up. "But?"
Selina shook her head. "He'd torn up a lot of them."
Penelope folded her hands under her chin. "Anger is part of the grieving process. Did he say anything to you?"
Selina raised an eyebrow "You mean other than 'get the Hell out' and 'leave me alone'?" Selina pinched the bridge of her nose and it occurred to Penelope that the other woman was trying not to let on just how devastated she was by Edward's state. "He was having a lot of mood swings. One moment, he'd almost start to talk about Crane, then he'd scream that he'd wished he'd never met him." Selina lowered her hand. "Ellen's been calling me non stop, but I don't want her to see him like that."
This had gone on long enough. If Edward was at the point where he couldn't look after his own basic needs, it was time to call Joan in. As Penelope reached for her phone, her eyes caught her old college book once again and she paused. "You mentioned that Edward has a box of news articles about Crane. Does he have any personal mementos?"
"He's got a scrap of Crane's old Scarecrow mask-"
"I don't mean Scarecrow," Penelope clarified. "Does he have anything about Jonathan Crane as a person?" Arkham would have taken anything Crane had in his cell, but surely Edward must have something to remember him by that wasn't connected with his crimes.
"No," Selina answered. "Most of Eddie's things either got taken by the cops or are in some storage space somewhere. Why?"
Penelope got up out of her chair and walked towards her bookshelf. "I'm going to go see him."
"No offense Doc, but he won't talk to me or Ozzie and he's known us for years. He won't even pick up when Nina and Deirdre call. He's not going to want to talk to a shrink, even if he does trust you."
"He doesn't have to talk to me," Penelope answered. She pulled the book off of the shelf. "But there's something I can give him that he needs to see."
He's in the sewers underneath Arkham. The smell almost knocks him back on his feet. He shouldn't be here, he thinks. Croc could come out at any moment, he needs to get out-then a man emerges, running from a doorway that leads back up to the Intensive Care Unit of the Asylum. A man dressed in burlap, carrying a pouch of something. His heart leaps up. "Jonathan!" he calls out. "Jonathan!"
Jonathan doesn't acknowledge him. Instead, he turns back towards the door where a man dressed in black runs in. "Stand back!" he yells. "Or this goes in the water supply!"
He shouldn't be here. He needs to get out of here, just drop the bag and run, give yourself up to him for God's sake-"Jonathan!" he calls out again.
This time, Jonathan turns to face him. His mask is gone now, his face a red ruin. "You did this to me, Edward," he says in a broken voice. "You did this to me!" Croc leaps out of the water then grabs onto his leg and drags him under. Soon, there is nothing but silence and the water turns red with blood-
"JONATHAN!"
Edward bolted upwards, his chest heaving. He took a look at his surroundings. He was back in his apartment, on his sofa. He brought his hand up to his face. He must have fallen asleep after he all but chased Selina out of his apartment an hour ago. He hadn't gotten much sleep in the past week. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Jonathan and what Croc did to him. Edward shuddered. He'd already had few memories of the time he and Jonathan had spent together. Would he ever be able to think about him again without thinking about that night in the asylum? Edward removed his hand. It wasn't fair. Why couldn't he have just completely forgotten about him? Why did he have to remember that he loved Jonathan Crane? Wasn't the coma punishment enough? He slowly got up, wincing a bit at the dull pain in his ribs. He looked down at the scattered bits of paper on his coffee table. No more. He'd shred it all today. He looked at the scrap of burlap also on the table. He'd burn it. He would never think about Jonathan Crane again.
He got up to his feet and began to gather everything on the table together, then he heard knocking. Oh Christ, he'd just sent Selina away, now what? Oswald again? Nina and Deirdre? "Go away!" he shouted. There was a brief pause before the person knocked again. Edward considered this. Who did he know who would actually pause and knock again? Edward walked to his door and opened it. Penelope stood on the other side, immaculate as always, clutching her purse close to her. Her blue eyes widened when she saw him and to Edward, it was like a stab to the heart. For a long moment, he stood there. He wanted to tell her to leave, that she was the last person he wanted to see right now, but he couldn't. Those ice blue eyes, so much like his-
"Edward?" he heard her ask. "May I come in?"
Wordlessly, Edward stood to the side and held his arm out. Penelope walked into his apartment. She looked at him again and the concern was obvious. Edward felt a bit self-conscious. "I didn't realize that you made house calls, Dr. I would have freshened up a bit."
Penelope took stock of the man. From Selina's description, she'd been prepared for the worse, but this? He clearly hadn't showered and there was stubble on his face. She hadn't seen him like this since back at the asylum, before the coma. "I wanted to see you."
"And now you have," Edward said shortly. Penelope felt her temper rise, but she quickly pushed it down. Edward had been in a traumatic situation and was in physical and emotional pain, and he hated being pitied. He'd been pushing away his friends to avoid being seen as vulnerable. He'd do the same to her. She couldn't take anything he said too personally. "Selina visited you I take it," he continued. "Did she tell you what a wreck I've become?"
"She's concerned about you," Penelope said. "We all are Edward."
Edward walked back to his sofa and gingerly sat down. Penelope was watching his every move. He couldn't be angry at her, he thought. It's not like she chose to have blue eyes after all. "Did she tell you about Jonathan too?"
Her gaze softened just a bit. "Yes," she said. "She told me the night you went after Jones."
Edward weakly chuckled. "Well. So much for privacy. I suppose you're here to tell me how stupid I was for doing that?"
"No," Penelope answered. "That's not what you need to hear right now."
Edward raised an eyebrow. "What I 'need' to hear? Are you here as a psychiatrist? Is this an intervention?"
Penelope sighed. Time to put all her cards on the table. "I'd like to think I'm here as your friend Edward. I came because I was worried about you."
Edward almost didn't know what to say to that. After everything they'd already gone through, he supposed she was his friend now. "I'm not dying Penelope if that's what you're worried about," he said finally. "I'll get over it."
"Edward," she said. "You can't keep burying your emotions about this. That's what caused you to chase after Jones in the first place."
Edward felt his hands begin to twitch. "It doesn't matter," he said. "Jonathan's gone. Baring my soul to you or Selina, or Joan Leland won't bring him back. I'm better off just forgetting about him and moving on."
Until the next time something happens to remind you about Crane. Penelope grabbed one of the dining room chairs at the dinner table and pushed it so that it was in front of the coffee table. She sat down, now directly across from Edward, much like their sessions all those years ago. "While I agree that you should move on at your own pace, I think forgetting about him is a mistake. He was someone you-"
"It doesn't matter!" Edward shouted. "Even if he was still alive," Edward paused when his voice began to hitch. He wouldn't fall apart in front of her. "Even if he was still alive, I'm reformed. I'd still be reformed. Nothing was going to stop Jonathan from carrying on in his 'research'. We wouldn't have been able to stay together." Edward shut his eyes. "I don't even remember much about our time together," he admitted. "So really, why shouldn't I just forget about him?"
Penelope sighed. "Even if on an intellectual level you know that's true, that doesn't change your feelings about him. You can't rationalize away your grief." Edward looked down at his hands. Penelope bit her lip, wondering if coming here had been a mistake. Only one way to find out now. She reached down into her purse and pulled out her college psychology book. "Edward," she said. "There's something I wanted to show you."
"Please tell me it's about Hugo Strange. Or some other case." He didn't look up as Penelope placed a book on his coffee table. He looked down in disinterest. It was open to a group photo of students and faculty. Gotham University, Psychology Department group photo, 1993. In the front row, Edward vaguely recognized a younger Penelope, as serious then as she was now. "Why on Earth-"
Penelope reached over and pointed her finger at the faculty in the back row. "Look here. Do you recognize anyone?"
Edward looked over to where she pointed. In the back row, farthest to the left, stood a tall, gangly man, dressed in an ill-fitting tweed jacket. His expression was borderline contemptuous of the other people in the photograph. Edward's breath caught in his throat. "Jonathan," he whispered. He grabbed the book then and began flipping through the pages. There were more photographs of Jonathan, a profile written about him, even quotes from him regarding the nature of fear. He stopped at one photo of him standing in front of a group of students in a lecture hall. The caption below read Professor Jonathan Crane and students.
Edward looked back up at Penelope. "You knew him? Before Arkham?"
She nodded. "Yes. I was in his fear and phobias class my sophomore year. I also worked as a teaching assistant for him for a few weeks, before...he was dismissed."
Before he'd become Scarecrow full time. Before Edward had ever met him. He looked back down at the photograph of Jonathan, still wearing that tweed coat...
..."Jonathan? What on Earth is this?" Edward pulls out a tweed coat from the closet. It's a brown color, one that Edward wouldn't be caught dead in, but that he supposes looks alright on Jonathan.
Jonathan looks up at him from where he's still lying in bed. "What're you doing going through my closet?"
"Planning a wardrobe change for you. If you're going to be seen in public with me, your going to be dressed accordingly."
"Begging your pardon Edward, but I don't think I'll be taking fashion advice from a man who used to dress in a green catsuit."
"That catsuit fit my aesthetic, thank you very much! It's not like I wore it for formal occasions! And besides," he adds flirtatiously, "Let's not pretend you didn't enjoy seeing me dressed in skin-tight spandex."
Jonathan does not dignify this with a response, instead picking up a pillow and throwing it at Edward. Edward dodges it easily and laughs...
..."Edward?" He'd been looking at the picture with a distant look on his face. Almost as if he wasn't there. Was he remembering something? Penelope leaned forward a bit. "Edward?" she asked again.
Edward started a bit. "I remember," he whispered. "I remember that coat." He chuckled a bit, and Penelope was relieved to hear how genuine it was. "I always hated that thing. He'd wear it whenever we went out to socialize and he looked ridiculous in it. It didn't fit him right. I tried I don't know how many times to get him to get it tailored or to get him to wear something that looked better, but he never would. More out of spite I think. He was the most stubborn person I've ever known."
"That makes sense," Penelope added. "Even when he was a professor, he never cared much for his appearance. We realized once that he wore the same pair of shoes every day at the lecture. I asked him if he had any other shoes and he looked confused for a moment. Then he asked me 'Why? Do you?'"
Edward actually laughed a bit this time, taking care to avoid aggravating his ribs. "Every dime he ever made from any scheme he concocted went to his chemicals or to books. I stopped by his hideout once, before we were together, and his living room floor was covered in books. I went to his kitchen to get a glass of water, and out of curiosity, opened his fridge."
"And there was nothing in there?" Penelope guessed.
Edward shook his head. "Oh no, there was something in there. A pumpkin. A pumpkin and a bottle of soy sauce. I told him that was no way to live, and he said 'I have my books. That's all I need.'" Edward laughed again and then his smile fell. "I really thought, after I was cleared and when I began my career as a private investigator, that he'd come. That any day, I'd walk into my office and he'd be there, sitting at my desk, asking me just what in the Hell I thought I was doing." Edward tried to laugh again. "The first stage of grief is denial, right?"
"For some people yes," Penelope said. Edward was close to either a breakthrough or a breakdown. She needed to carefully guide him through it. "I think though that between focusing on your own recovery, getting established in your new career and this business with Hugo Strange, that you've never really been able to grieve."
Edward took a shaky breath and ran his hand through his hair. "I was alright. I thought I was alright. I mean yes, it hurt to think about Jonathan, but I'd accepted it. And then that news about Croc came and I realized that there was so much about what happened that I didn't know, that I needed to know." Edward's vision became blurry and he realized that he was crying. "It was my fault. What happened to Jonathan. It was my fault, Penelope."
"What are you talking about Edward?"
He'd said too much. He hadn't even told Selina this, but the words came before he could stop himself. "Croc told me he killed him to get back at me for something I did to him during some scheme." Edward's voice hitched as he grabbed the side of his face. "I don't even remember what it was! I don't remember what kind of scheme it was, what I did to Croc, any of it! And Jonathan died because of it!" He covered his face with his hands. "I love him, Penelope. I love him so much. And I might as well have killed him."
Penelope said nothing as she processed what Edward had told her. God...It was obvious what kind of toll hearing this had taken on Edward. And to think, she'd believed wholeheartedly once that he wasn't capable of caring about other people. Edward's frame shook with the force of his sobs and she knew she had to do something, say something. She reached her hand over to gently touch his shoulder. He looked up at her then, his hands dropping from his face.
"No you didn't Edward," she said. He leaned forward slightly and she moved her hand from his shoulder to cup his face. "You're only responsible for your own actions Edward. Whatever you did to Jones, he was the one who chose to take it out on Jonathan. He's responsible for what happened to Jonathan, not you. You know that."
Edward gasped a bit and grasped onto her hand. For a long time, the two of them sat there, Edward in tears and Penelope watching him. This was necessary. Painful, but necessary. Finally, Edward had calmed down enough that Penelope felt safe speaking to him again. "Edward?"
Edward opened his eyes. He thought he'd be embarrassed, being this vulnerable around anyone and he probably would be later, but for now, he felt at peace. "Hmm?"
Penelope wet her lip. "I know you're not going to like this, but I think you should tell Joan about this. She does have experience in grief counseling."
Edward sighed. "I don't know how much more I can talk about this Penelope."
"I know it's painful, but you've got to work through it, Edward. She can help you. We all can. You're not alone Edward."
He sighed and nodded. No, he wasn't, was he? Slowly, he let go of her hand and she withdrew it. He leaned back against the couch. God, he was tired. He was hungry too. He looked back down at the book Penelope had brought and slowly pushed it back to her. "I should let you have this back-"
Penelope stopped the book with her hands. "No," she said. "I want you to have it. Selina told me you didn't have anything about Jonathan that wasn't related to his crimes. He was a very flawed individual, but he was more than the Scarecrow, especially to you. You deserve to remember that."
Edward had to shut his eyes to prevent another outbreak of tears. When he'd recovered, he took the book back. "Thank you," he said. "For everything." She smiled a bit in response and Edward felt a small one come to his own face. For the first time since last Friday, he saw her again. "Were you really his teaching assistant?" he asked suddenly. It certainly explained quite a bit about her, come to think of it. "What was that like?"
Penelope shook her head. "It...was quite an experience." Her face grew serious again. "I don't how much Jonathan talked about that part of his life with you, or how much you remember, but I can talk to you about it. If you want me to."
"I'd like that," Edward said. "Not now, but I'd like to hear about it. I haven't talked to anyone about him in so long..." he trailed off. He suddenly became aware that he was dressed in pajamas and that he hadn't showered for almost a week. "I really look like a mess, don't I?"
"Yes," Penelope answered bluntly. "You need to shower. And shave."
"Fine," Edward grunted, pulling himself off the couch. "What a nag. Worse than Nina and Deirdre."
Penelope rolled her eyes, but she was relieved. This was the Edward she'd become accustomed to. "You should call Ellen at some point too. She's been worried sick about you."
Edward froze and turned back to face her. "Ellen-you know about Ellen?"
"I met her last Saturday night. She was the one who alerted us about your absence. She's probably the reason you're still alive Edward."
Edward gulped. He'd almost left his daughter an orphan. What had he been thinking? He sighed and shook his head. "That wasn't how I wanted you to meet her."
Penelope was surprised by this. "But you did want me to meet her?"
Edward shrugged. "At some point, yes. How was she?"
"Worried mostly. She cursed at one of Cobblepot's restaurant managers and almost ran off to find you herself."
Edward shook his head. "My little hellion. I suppose I owe Oswald an apology for that." He looked down at his feet. "I owe Ellen one too. I was supposed to spend time with her that Saturday."
"Damn right you were, Old Man!"
Edward and Penelope both turned to see Ellen standing in the open doorway. The girl shut the door behind her and stomped past Penelope to where her father stood in the living room.
"Ellen, what are you doing here?" Edward asked. "You do realize that it's a school day?"
"I ditched Old Man. No one was telling me anything, so I decided to check on you myself." She stopped when she was in front of Edward and glared up at him, her lower lip jutting out. "Dumb Old Man!" She then opened her arms and lightly hugged her father's right arm, taking care not to touch his ribs. "Are you OK?"
Edward leaned down and rubbed the top of her head with his left hand. "No," he said. "I will be though."
Ellen nodded, then pulled away, her nose crinkled. "You stink."
Edward rolled his eyes. "Fine, I'll go take a shower." He left the two women in his living room and walked towards his bathroom. When he was gone, Penelope got out of her chair and walked over to Ellen.
"You really shouldn't be missing school like this."
Ellen cocked her head at her. "You're not really gonna report me to the truant officer, are you?"
Penelope sighed. "Just this once, no. But don't make this a habit."
Ellen rolled her eyes. "Whatever." She then rubbed her elbow. "Is the Old Man really going to be OK?"
Penelope nodded. "He needs to speak with a counselor about this, but yes. I think he will be. Your father's many things Ellen, including a survivor." He'd come this far from where he'd been. He'd make it. Edward walked back out into the living room, dressed in fresh casual clothes. Penelope reached down to grab her purse. "I should go. I have patients to see."
Edward nodded. "Next Friday then?"
Penelope gave him a small smile. "If you think you're up to it, yes." She walked towards the open door and paused to look back. She lingered for a moment, before finally giving the father and daughter a small wave. "Goodbye Edward. Call me if you need anything."
"I will. I promise."
She nodded, then shut the door behind her. Maybe she should stay a little longer-no. She had work to do. And Edward needed the time with his daughter. She shouldn't intrude on that.
Now that Penelope was gone, Edward turned his full attention to his daughter. "Well now," he said. "What am I going to do with you?"
Ellen dropped her backpack on the floor and sat ion the couch, looking for the remote. "Prime Minister's Questions! Gotham Public Access has a marathon today!"
Edward sat down next to her slowly. "Wonderful. Just what is your fascination with the British parliamentary system? You don't even follow local politics."
"It's funny! Bunch of dumb old guys yelling at each other and going 'nay' or 'yay'. Beats watching the City Council." Ellen found the remote, under a photograph of Jonathan that Edward had pulled out. Ellen looked at it. "You really cared about him a lot, huh?"
Edward took the photograph from her and looked at it. At some point, he'd need to pack the box away, but this time, he'd leave some pictures of Jonathan out. "Yes I did," he answered softly. "I loved him."
Ellen leaned her head against his shoulder. "I'm sorry."
Edward reached around her to give her a side hug. "It's alright."
"I wish I could've met him."
Jonathan didn't care for children, but Edward liked to think he could have come to care for Ellen. "I wish you could have too. I'll tell you more about him, Ellen. But not right now. Right now, let's watch your silly Questions."
Edward spent the rest of the afternoon watching TV with Ellen, watching her as she laughed at the proceedings, or joined in with her own quips. He said nothing, happy to be in her presence. He wasn't alright. Seeing the older pictures of Jonathan and being able to speak of him helped, but he knew that thinking about him would always be painful. But Penelope was right, he realized.
Jonathan might be gone, but Edward wasn't alone anymore.
He wasn't alright, but he would be.

Dick's cheeks flush with... he's not sure. There was no alcohol to cloud either of their memory and he remembers every dirty, debauched thing they did last night. And yet there's something indecent about watching this, now, like he's catching Jason in an intimate moment that he wasn't given permission to see.
ghosts and gods by perissologist Teen | Paranormal stuff, Getting together
If Jason is a ghost, then Dick is a supernatural force all his own, one that tears worlds apart in search of better ones.
---
As a side effect of coming back from the dead, Jason is a bona fide paranormal phenomenon. Dick seems to be a little too caught up in mooning after him to notice. Their siblings aren't amused.
(Or, Jason is a supernatural presence after his resurrection, but the poor fool in love with him thinks the freaky feelings are just the butterflies in his stomach.)

A night out for drinks and a certain Bruno Mars song land Dick and Jason in an interesting predicament. Guess it’s as good a time as any to come out to the family.
It Doesn't Stick by Skalidra Teen | Immortality, Flirting
Jason's fifteen when he dies for the first time. He's eighteen when he comes back to Gotham for vengeance, and dies again. But for some reason that second death doesn't last any more than the first one did, and Jason comes to the realization that something, somewhere, is keeping him alive.

Melt Me Down by Skalidra Explicit | Sex, Marathon sex, Established relationship
Sometimes, Dick gets in moods. Jason's never been able to figure out exactly what the moods stem from, despite their years together, but he always finds himself caught up in the flow of them anyway. But of all the things that Dick could be doing in these moods, this is definitely a good one.
into you by perissologist Not Rated | Dance AU
“You think it’s really Nightwing?” Kyle asks, gaze searching ahead in the herd. “Here, in Gotham?”
“It’s possible, I guess,” Jason says. “He goes everywhere, doesn’t he?”
“C’mon, what’re we waiting for?” Duke is already pushing forward, eyes glittering in excitement. “Man, how crazy would it be if it is him? Dude’s a legend. I’ve been hoping he’d come to Gotham since that one video of him dancing to Tupac on the Eiffel Tower.”

The Outlaws are the best underground hip-hop crew in Gotham--until the anonymous international sensation Nightwing crashes onto the scene.
A Hot Mess by Skalidra Teen | College AU, Roommates, Getting together
Jason's roommate at his college, one Dick Grayson, is both a blessing and a curse. Hot as sin but messy as hell, and completely oblivious to both things. Even when he brings up the mess part of it, it doesn't get much better (although Dick is trying). So, they enact a system. Cleaning, in exchange for 'favors.'
I'm Just A Problem That Doesn't Wanna Be Solved by geckoholic Mature | Sex, Sex pollen, Angst, Pining
The agreement, as it stands, is a couple months old. Back around New Years, they had to deliver Bats to Catwoman's doorstep in a last ditch attempt after the chemical route didn't take. It was awkward for everyone and, from what Jason heard, had served to curtail eye contact in the manor to a minimum for a few days. He and Dick had a conversation about it a couple weeks later, and really, this kinda shit happens to them often enough that certain... contingency plans seemed like a good idea.

"It's Jason Todd you'd be working with. You remember Jason, right?"
"He's probably hoping you remember him."
For his best friend's wedding, Dick's more than willing to double as best man and co-wedding planner, even if it means going back to the city he's been avoiding for years on end. Then he meets the other best man and co-wedding planner and falling so hard and so fast was so not part of the plan.
Baby Let's Forget the Morning by MissNaya Explicit | Sex, Incest play, Dirty talk
Jason wonders what Dick thinks of him: is he a brother, a friend, something else entirely? He gets answers, but not in the way he pictured.

Dick and Jason keep dancing around each other, never quite giving in or giving too much, and Dick is tired.

Red Hood took a bullet for Nightwing. Dick is grateful, he really is. But now he has to deal with a drugged-up Jason Todd.

The three times it didn't count, and the one time it did.
Cabin Fever by Skalidra Explicit | Sex, Established relationship, Injury
In one random fight, Dick takes a badly angled shot to the knee that puts him out of commission. As his partner, and the one living with him, it's Jason's job to keep Dick off his feet until he heals. Not an easy job, not with Dick's resistance to ever staying still, but he has to do it. At least there's one way that he knows for sure can bleed out some of Dick's extra energy.
Dad!Jason AU by fishfingersandjellybabies Gen-Mature | Baby Damian, Talon!Dick, Hurt/comfort, Getting together
In which Jason is resurrected and found that Talia had a baby with the Batman. To protect Damian from Bruce and Talia's battles, he gives up on his plan of revenge and instead secretly takes the child to Gotham to raise as his own.
But then Dick finds them both, and all bets are off.
My Downfall is Rooted in Your Desperate Need by victoriousscarf Explicit | Sex, Temporary character death, Rape discussion, Angst, Getting together
Dick isn't Orpheus and he can't play a lyre. But that's okay because the analogy falls apart the longer you look at it.
He's just not going to let Jason stay dead a second time.

Tim notices everything, whether he wants to or not. He knows by the clothes Dick wears whether he’s on-again or off-again with Barbara (tight pants and polo shirts mean on-again). He remembers how many bullets Jason has left even when Jason himself forgets. And he knows that Damian has been jerking off to the thought of him for at least several weeks.

some saved family au notes from today at work:
Similar to the talk about the kids, i like to picture austin and kyle going to the same school a lot since they’re only two years age difference. Austin getting picked on a /lot/ probably, he’s kind of a nerd type and he wouldn’t be able to defend himself easily and would just back down immediately. Tells the teacher later after the incident but that just gets more teasing/bullying aimed his way and probably enough threats from some of the bullies to get him to stop. And like, when they’re younger, Kyle thinks the world of Austin. The age gap between himself and his brothers is larger than that between austin and him, so kyle just adopts austin as his new older brother even if austin isn’t as thrilled about that. Because like, i can only imagine for a kid getting shit over not being cool like austin would, like it’s def not cool having your little cousin tag along with you everywhere. But like, on the other hand, one of the times when Austin’s about to get beat up, Kyle stumbling in on the scene trying to find austin so they can walk home together or whatever, and like. Immediately steps up to defend aus. Admittedly the bully also has a couple years or so on him (and that’s not counting the possibility of it being multiple kids fucking with austin), but he gets a couple swings in and maybe even manages to give the bully a bloody nose in the process of getting focused as well. From then on Kyle kind of like sticking up for austin at school. he knows how to fight and how to defend himself pretty well, he can help austin out with this. Austin gets more shit for having to have his little cousin be his bodyguard, but he doesn’t deal with quite as much shit actually hurting him as he did before. as they get older, them drifting and not really being friends any more. again, austin’s personality begins to turn more introverted and withdrawn, showing more asocial and detached signs, while kyle starts to kind of come into his own and become way more popular at school. he’s failing more classes and skipping others and getting detention left and right, but the kids in the classes think he’s super friendly and a charmer, so he gets his own circle of sorta friends so he doesn’t need to rely on following his cousin around. also standard of judging his cousin’s seemingly growing lack of empathy. but like. that’s still a given with the bullying. if kyle catches anyone giving austin shit, he’ll give them shit right the fuck back, fucking try him. by that point he’s got a lot more muscle, he’s still not a trained fighter but he’s gotten /good/ at dodging and throwing a punch back, and his opinion on austin and his current friend situation doesn’t matter. like that’s his fucking family and if you wanna fuck with him, you fuck with kyle too and you gotta be prepared for that shit.
Hey here’s a thing. Kyle tries to be open minded about a lot of stuff, but I think he definitely slips up a lot and largely so with people he’s comfortable fucking with. specifically related to ace shit, like the common argument you see of ‘can you stop equating us to inhumans like for real?’ Like Al or Ivan, he’s not going to make one of those alien/robot/etc jokes about them being ace to them, but austin’s distance from that stuff? Just like everything else, he absolutely gives him shit about it. I’ve mentioned for other AUs specifically but like has been lowkey noted to apply here too, he already calls Austin Tin/Tin Man partially because AusTIN but mainly as like a joke about Austin being from Oz and missing a heart (which i’m also gonna say it’s also canon in this AU as it is in others that Austin gets him back with some choice ‘Scarecrow’ comebacks, which like, equally good to make fun of kyle’s struggle in school and other knowledge/educational things (largely from the ADHD) by implying he doesn’t have a brain. What a good friend/family relay they have going on, so nice, so respectful. IT’S THAT BIT DURING ONE OF THE TAZ JUMBOTRONS WHERE GRIFFIN KEPT STOPPING TO BE LIKE ‘/JEEZ/, JUST WOW THOUGH’ ABOUT THE INSULTS. like they’re family and they love each other but jeez. Anyway i’m getting off track), so like, kyle asking about the topic after a discussion with austin by introing the convo with a “How’s my favorite robot doing with figuring out that whole sex thing?” or a joke about asking whether it was his aunt or uncle that was an alien because like, clearly austin isn’t human because [reason] kinda thing. And even if you pointed out to him the difference of like, would you say the same thing to Al or Ivan or someone? Like it wouldn’t even, it’d be a huge disconnect in his head. No, of course not, why would he? in his head, he’s not taking a shot at austin possibly being ace, he’s taking a shot at austin definitely not expressing emotions in ways kyle recognizes. And it’s not that he specifically wants to hurt austin, he likes him! he ~kinda~ respects him, sorta, depending on when you ask. But like, he also fucks with him, that’s what he does! And admittedly, again, this whole fucking topic means so little to austin and he’s already annoyed by but used to Kyle being an ass, that it wouldn’t come off as like offensive to him even if he knew about the associations, which he wouldn’t. And like, not every person who’s not strictly allosexual is going to be offended by the robot/monster/alien jokes. But still, it’s interesting of another case of something jerk-ish kyle saying/doing flying right over his head because that’s just how the relationship is or [insert other reason here].
this isn’t a long one, just like, austin doing the “when did you get so smart?” thing to dal is good. kyle doesn’t do it often to his kids, he knows they’re way smarter than him, but dal and aus talking about something and dal saying something especially wise and him just. very proud of her.
austin getting the ‘sweetheart’ thing he uses a lot for dal from his mom! she doesn’t use it all the time, but when trying to be comforting she’d use it on occasional. tell him to ‘come here, sweetheart’ and pull him into her lap when he was a kid and rub his back and rock him a bit.
also, me: maybe ollie would prefer sweetie or something instead? nah, that doesn’t sound right, maybe... sweet boy? ‘my sweet boy’? ...ugh, we can’t- i can’t- not another mcelroy insta-reference, i can’t.
kyle would /love/ the extended set of parents he gets in this au. like. it takes him to his YA age to recognize that his dad wasn’t as bad as he thought and that his mom was way way worse. he always loved and will always love both of them a lot, but him eventually realizing oh hey summer wasn’t a good person, she wasn’t a good mom, she wasn’t good. and that would kind of be rough to deal with, she was important to him and he defended her in his mind and to others a lot and the true realization and acceptance that he was wrong about that would hurt to adjust to initially. ultimately good getting past having to constantly justify the shit she does and how it doesn’t make her a bad person or anything, but like at teh start, it’s rough. austin’s parents are a good step. ollie and june are so supportive and they step in as they can. june knows her sister’s childish and has a rotten temper, but she never really suspects that summer’s quite so rough on kyle, especially because like. well, he does throw himself into danger a lot as well, she sees this first hand with him having play dates with austin a lot, plus he /does/ defend summer a lot. and later on, her and oliver both kind of regretful probably that they couldn’t do more but they do a lot as they can. they make it seem like they want austin and kyle to spend a lot of time together to help austin but also, whenever kyle’s over, they can tell he’s happier and doesn’t want to go back home a lot. then like beatrice and marion. i don’t know if they’d interact a lot with kyle earlier on when austin and amelia first get married or if it’d be more for later when kyle marries ivan and they adopt the two kids, but whenever he met them, he’d def love them too and how warm and friendly they seem too. i know it may have seemed like a joke when i mentioned it before in relation to the kids but he’s legit just going to adopt austin and mel’s parents because like. his dad’s okay and his mom is trash, can he just have these very good moms and dad please and thank you?
i also remembered cian was an uncle to kyle in this au and that’s still very good! cian also a good influence even if he’s not around for visits a lot. cian not liking this woman who married his brother and then went and cheated on him wtf, and when he finds out she’s got a sister and brother-in-law, not expecting much, but pleasantly surprised when oliver and june are nice enough. i love everyone kind of meeting either summer or austin and then ending up completely surprised when oliver and june are nice and caring and warm people.
also this isn’t family au, this is gta au but like. i had the realization that like. i mean, kyle both does drugs in this au and also is still the reckless ‘fuck death’ type so. austin probably comes across kyle a number of times in like scares of thinking he overdosed or having to help him after kyle came close to it. kyle not even fazed either. teases austin one time while kind of coming out of it that austin always takes care of him, what good family~. meanwhile austin not showing it but like. he’s so fucking tired of worrying that his cousin is going to get himself killed in some dumb way. it’d be fine if it was just normal gang stuff and kyle was actually trying to keep himself alive but this inviting death to come see him and challenging him not to take him is getting old fast.

snow in april (chapter 8 of 8)

Doggett was faster than him somehow, and Mulder resented it. He made it to the house first, far ahead. Mulder could hear the sound of the wood cracking, the door breaking in. He came out of the trees just as Doggett went in the door. And then Scully's frantic voice: “What happened? John, where is he?”
“Scully!” he shouted, running faster, flailing his arms in his struggle to peel off his coat. (His hands were near useless, all pins and needles.) He was frantic, he had to see her.
She came out of the house, looking smaller than ever in her oversized coat. He finally managed to get his coat off and wrapped her in it; he couldn't get it out of his head that she was cold, and she and the baby needed to be warmed up. “Are you okay? Is the baby okay?” he asked, pushing hair off of her forehead with trembling hands. His thumb smoothed her cheek, gently like she might break.
She reached out and grabbed him, yanking him close. Her fingernails dug into his back, and he gripped her just as tightly with one hand curling into her hair and the other finding her stomach. “Fuck you,” she mumbled tearfully into his chest. “Fuck you, I thought I’d never see you again, you fucking asshole.”
He laughed shakily and kissed the top of her head. “Love you too, Scully,” he said, absently rocking her back and forth.
Scully made a choking sound somewhere between a laugh and a cough. “You're an idiot,” she mumbled, sniffling into his chest. She pressed the top of her head into the crook of his neck and he closed his eyes, balling his hands into the back of her jacket.
She pulled away, fingers running through his hair as she checked for injuries. “Are you okay? Did they hurt you?” She cradled a wrist in her free hand, looking down at the rope burns along it. Her hand brushed against the side of his coat, and her palm came back with smears of red. Her eyes widened.
“I'm fine,” he said quickly. “It's a long story, but it's not my blood. I promise.”
She looked down at his hand. Her thumb caressed the underside of his wrist, where his pulse was beating, the sore spots under her skin. Her other hand curled around the back of his neck, moving his head downwards so she could press a lingering kiss to his forehead. “I'm so glad you're safe,” she whispered.
---
Scully took one look at Doggett, who was quiet and shivering in the cold, and declared that she'd drive. “Scully, you've gotta be tired,” Mulder said worriedly. He felt her forehead. “Is this much activity okay for you? Or the baby? Should you be resting?"
She looked at him like he was crazy. “I'm fine. I'm not the one who was running around in the woods all night.” She made him take his coat back and went to check on Doggett. A few minutes later, they were on their way with the heater blasting. Doggett climbed into the passenger seat, Mulder taking shotgun. It was dumb, but he wanted to be near Scully. In fact, he didn't really plan on leaving her anytime soon. Maybe never again.
“John… Agent Doggett…” Scully said awkwardly as they wove through the streets. Police cars wailed along the roads, sirens flashing. Mulder had no idea how many people Haswell had sent. He hoped there were hundreds of them. “I'm so sorry I got you involved in this. I don't know how to thank you for coming after us.”
“Of course, Agent Scully, that's my job. You're my…” Doggett stopped mid-sentence, eyes darting to Mulder. The end of the sentence went unspoken, but everyone knew what it was.
You couldn't almost die with someone and come out without forming some kind of bond. Mulder barely knew Doggett, but he'd walked to his death with the man. And he'd protected Scully when Mulder couldn't; he felt like he owed him something. At the very least, he could let him off the hook in the jealousy and bitterness department. “I'll repay the favor if you ever need it,” he said, turning back in his seat. “Thank you for having Scully's back all this time that I was gone.”
It came out jilted and awkward but for once in his life, he really meant it. Doggett nodded at him, added an awkward, “You're welcome.” It seemed like enough, for now; when Mulder turned to face front, he saw a small smile on Scully's face.
Doggett had to flash his badge and mention that he was one of the FBI agents who'd been held hostage at least three times, but they finally got out of Calvert Pass. (“Good riddance,” Mulder muttered as they passed the sign he'd woken up in front of a week ago. It felt like forever. Scully shuddered, almost inaudibly, as they whizzed past.)
The snow vanished after a few minutes, and Scully relaxed beside him in the driver's seat. Mulder reached out and took her hand, kissing the back of it. He was still overwhelmed with relief - they were okay, they'd made it. A few minutes more of driving and the cold vanished into a slight chill. The three of them wordlessly shed their coats, Mulder untangling Scully's one arm at a time. Mulder flipped the heat off as they pulled into the next town, the one that matched the police cars that had come to Calvert Pass; he didn't let go of Scully's hand the entire time.
They went to the police station first, at three in the fucking morning. Anna and Lyla were curled up asleep in the hard plastic chairs, covered with musty blankets. Haswell was sitting beside them, and she scrambled to her feet when they entered. “You're okay!” she blurted, looking embarrassed. “I didn't know…”
“The police showed up just as Calvert came back from the dead, pointed a gun at Jeff Renner, Dr. Henderson, and Reverend Greene, and convinced him to let us go,” Mulder said. “Thanks for sending them, by the way.”
Haswell's brow furrowed. “How… Calvert came back from the dead? But that's not possible."
“I saw it,” Doggett said, in a half-begrudging way.
“Calvert said it was the water,” said Mulder. “Jeff shot him and he fell into the spring. He woke up a few minutes later and said he'd figured out it was the untreated water. He said he was the only one who had been drinking it all these years, and that he gave your husband a drink from his cannister right before he brought back Anna.”
“That makes sense,” said Scully, suddenly. Mulder looked at her in surprise; they hadn't discussed what had happened in the woods on the way down the mountain. “Lyla’s report,” she said to Mulder. “The water treatment plant was established in 1974, remember? And the powers faded over time until they vanished in 1985."
“Fuck,” Haswell hissed out, collapsing into a chair. “If I'd known…” She stroked Anna's head, hands shaking.
“There was no way to know,” Scully offered, some attempt at comfort.
“There's a lot of things I regret here,” she muttered. “I should probably be arrested for my silence.”
“It wasn't your fault,” Mulder said. “You saw what they did to Kyle Roberts, the Youngs… they would've killed you if you'd acted out. The reverend confirmed it... he said no one moves away from Calvert Pass. And you had two little girls to protect."
“If you'd tried to stop them, there wouldn't have been anyone to protect your daughters,” Scully added.
Haswell was watching Lyla and Anna sleep, a distant look in her eyes. “I guess you're right,” she murmured.
Scully put a hand on her shoulder. “I don't know how to thank you for making sure we got out,” she said thickly.
“I didn't do much, Scully.” Haswell looked up at them, her jaw clenched in determination. “Just tell me that Sam Greene and Jeff Renner got what they deserved.”
Mulder remembered the gunshots he'd heard when he and Doggett were running away. He didn't know who had fired, or why, but he had no doubt some kind of justice was served. The spirits of Cara Roberts and Bobby Haswell and all the others could rest easy. “Yeah,” he said. “They did.”
---
The police took their statements as quickly as possible, but it still took too long. Lyla and Anna never woke up, and Scully fell asleep against Mulder's shoulder. They were finally finished some time around six in the morning, and the cop recommended a hotel down the street. Mulder figured they could sleep for an indefinite amount of time and decide what to do from there. Haswell and the kids and Doggett all got rooms as well and blearily made their way to them. Doggett shook his and Scully's hand before disappearing into his room.
Mulder fumbled for the key card and let them into the dark room, carrying their overnight bags. (They'd hardly planned to spend several days in a crazy, necromantic town.) “Thank god for central heating,” Scully murmured as they entered. After spending hours on end in the cold, the warmth emitting from the radiator was near heavenly.
His hand brushed against her waist as he turned to close the door and he leaned down and kissed her, fierce and full of relief. She rose on tiptoes to respond, her arms wrapping around his neck. He pulled her as close as possible, hugging her tightly, burying his face in the crook of her shoulder. “We're okay,” she whispered, her palms pressing into his back.
“We are.” He kissed her collarbone before lifting his head to look at her. “I'm going to go take a shower real quick, okay? Get some sleep, I'll be out in a second.”
“Mulder, wait.” Her hand slipped into his. “We need to talk,” she said quietly.
He turned to face her, shadows falling across her face. The dark brought back memories of the night before with the scarecrows and he shuddered, fumbling for the light switch. “I'm not trying to put it off…” he said cautiously. “… but aren't you tired? It's been a long couple of days.”
“I know,” she said. She sniffled a little, wiping her eyes. “I just… I need to do this now.”
“Okay,” said Mulder. “Okay.” He tugged her hand towards the bed. They sat across from each other, knees brushing.
Scully sniffled again, rubbing the back of his hand with her thumb. “I don't… you can't keep doing what you did tonight.”
“I'm sorry I called you,” he whispered. “I just… they said they'd hurt you if you interfered, and the baby…”
“I understand why you did it,” she interrupted him, her voice trembling beams of steel. She was always the strongest person he knew. “It's just that I've seen it before.”
“What do you mean?”
“You act like your life is some cavalier thing, you-you're willing to do anything in your power to help me if I need it but you don't seem to give a shit about yours half the time.”
“That's not true…”
“Modell,” she said steadily. “You held back with me but you had no trouble pulling the trigger on yourself. Alaska, you left me behind to protect me and ran straight into danger, you would've died if I hadn't showed up in that emergency room…”
“That's not fair,” he protested. “That all happened years ago.”
Scully seemed to be on some kind of role. “That time with Bremer, you didn't tell me what was going on. Amy and David Cassandra, the ketamine… the goddamn brain disease…”
“Scully…”
“And you just came back from the goddamn dead and it's still more of the same. ‘Scully, you have to go; Scully, save yourself’...”
“Scully, you are pregnant,” he hissed. “If the circumstances had been different, I would never have made that phone call. I know you can handle yourself.”
“Would you have not made that phone call if I hadn't been pregnant?" she hissed. “Considering the circumstances, that they threatened to kill me, would you?”
He opened his mouth, closed it. She was right; he wouldn't have.
“You have to stop being some kind of martyr, Mulder. Sometimes…” Her chin trembled. “Sometimes you have to put yourself first. Sometimes there are more important things.” Her free hand brushed her stomach.
“This isn't about tonight,” he said, realizing. “This is about me keeping my disease from you. This is about me leaving you behind to go to Oregon.”
“Maybe it is,” she said quietly.
He realized in the moment that he was still holding her hand; he squeezed it, looking down at their intertwined fingers. “I'm not sure what you want me to say, Scully,” he mumbled. “It happened. I wish I could take it back, although it might have ultimately been for the better considering what happened with my health. And tonight… I'm sorry for tonight, but I didn't do it on purpose. I was trying to protect Haswell, and I was trying to protect you and the baby. You can't fault me for that, not this time. Not when the baby factors in.”
“I can't, you're right,” she said, chewing at her lower lip. “I'm mad about tonight, but it's irrational. You're okay, and that's what matters.”
“But you're also mad about the disease,” he promoted.
“That you didn't tell me, yes,” she said. “That you felt you had to keep that from me… to spare my feelings… and for going to Oregon, even though that's irrational, too. For walking into that light even though you knew I was home sick. You couldn't have known I collapsed…”
He'd already closed his eyes under the weight of it all, and he brought her hand up against his cheek, nearly shaking under her cool skin. “I'm so sorry,” he whispered. “I am. I fucked up, and I regret it, and not just because of all the pain that resulted from it. I never would've left you if I'd known you were pregnant. I shouldn't have left you when you were sick. I'm so sorry.”
“I know,” Scully said, sniffling a little. She kissed his cheek. “I know you are.”
He kissed the side of her hand, the base of her thumb. “So what…”
“I don't know. You say you want to be a parent with me, and you don't know how much I want that. But if you keep doing this… acting like your life doesn't matter… then I don't know if I can.”
He stroked her palm with his thumb. “So… what are you saying? Do you want me to quit the FBI?”
“Mulder, I don't even know that I want to completely quit the FBI… or the X-Files. Step away for a while, definitely, but after that I don't know. I don't necessarily want you to quit - although if that's what you want, of course you can. I just want…” She sighed. “I just don't want to constantly be worried about you. It's true that people get hurt doing these things, but you and I seem to have the record. And this tendency of yours to thoughtlessly put yourself in danger… it can't go on. Not if we're going to be parents. You can't keep health issues from me, or walk blindly into a case of alien abduction, or offer yourself up on a silver platter. I can't take it anymore.”
He kissed the tip of her fingers. “Okay.”
She blinked in surprise, like she hadn't expected him to say that. “Okay?”
Almost dying constantly took something of a toll on a person. He couldn't do it anymore. His coffin, his grave, the faint memories of being dead, still loomed large in his mind. He hated that feeling. He wanted to be as far away from it as possible. The truth was out there, but it had taken too much from him, from Scully. There’s so much more than this, he’d told Scully in Oregon, and there was. “Okay,” he said. “This is what I want. I've wanted it since you asked me to be the father of your child.” She smiled a little, practically glowing in the dark. “This is enough right now,” he added. “We can figure out everything else later. All I need right now is you and the kid.”
“I love you,” she whispered. She shifted closer to him on the bed, leaning into him.
“That's the third time you've said that,” he mumbled into her hair.
She made a small sound of amusement against his shirt. “You've kept score?”
“They've all been pretty memorable, Scully.” He kissed her hairline.
“If we're keeping score, then we're tied at the moment. You've said it three times.”
“Only three?” He'd thought it so much that it felt like a million times.
“In the hospital after the Bermuda Triangle. Before you left for Oregon. A few hours ago on Calvert’s porch.”
“Mm,” he murmured. “I love you.”
She swatted him lightly. “You're just doing that so you're ahead.”
“No, I'm not. That was to the baby.”
“Hmm. Well, the baby loves you, too.”
“I'm glad.” He kissed her head. “I'm going to go take a shower, okay? Can we talk about this more later?”
“Okay.” She kissed him quickly before he got up. “Come back to bed after.”
“I will.” He headed for the bathroom. Scully went for the overnight bags, even though it was technically morning. He turned to watch her at the door, her hair falling across her cheeks like auburn waves. “I love you, Scully,” he said.
She smiled without looking at him. "I love you too. Now shut up and take your shower. I'll have plenty of time to win, you know.”
"That's what you think," he said, teasing. Now, in the moment, it felt like they had all the time in the world.
---
Skinner sent out some other agents to handle the investigation, including a woman Scully knew from during Mulder's disappearance named Monica Reyes. Doggett volunteered to stay and offer his insight. Skinner insisted that Mulder and Scully come home. “You can call up here if they need your help,” he said, and they both thought that was a good idea, all things considered.
Haswell was doing something similar - she offered her assistance as much as possible, but otherwise, she was taking her daughters to go see their grandparents. “Bobby’s family,” she told them. “Bobby wasn't from Calvert Pass. This never would've happened if I hadn't insisted on moving back home… if we hadn't stayed after my parents passed... I don't know how I'll ever be able to face them."
"I'm sure they'll understand," Scully said gently. "Family's more forgiving than you'd expect, sometimes."
"It'll be good for the girls to be somewhere else," said Haswell. "With family." Her hands clasped awkwardly in front of her. "Thank you for coming for me, Mulder. And both of you, for taking care of Lyla and Anna... after I got you involved..."
"Thank you for sending the cops back for me," Mulder said, extending his hand. Haswell smiled a little and shook it.
Scully stepped forward and hugged her. "Let me know if you need anything, and I'll pull the FBI card," she murmured.
"Thank you, Scully." Haswell hugged her tightly before pulling away. "I'm so glad I met you two," she said softly. Scully smiled at her.
Behind Haswell, the door opened and Lyla and Anna came out. "Dana! Mulder!" Lyla chirped happily, throwing her arms around Scully. "Mommy said you were here!"
"She said you got out okay," Anna added, cautiously, staring at them.
"We did," Scully said, stroking Lyla’s hair once.
The little girl pulled away and came over to hug Mulder. He stiffened in surprise, but smiled and returned the hug. "We're glad you got out, too," he added.
Lyla offered Mulder a small smile and said "I'm glad you didn't get soul-snatched by an evil scarecrow.”
Mulder coughed awkwardly. "I... me too." Scully smiled, hand brushing his back.
"We're gonna go visit our grandparents," Lyla told them, scrambling back over to stand beside her mother and sister. "Mommy says we're going to be happy."
Mulder looked at their little clustered family. Haswell had her arm around Anna, who was leaning into her; Lyla put her head against Anna's arm. They looked ragtag but close, almost like him and Scully. "That's great," he said. "I'm sure you guys are gonna be very happy."
---
Sometime that afternoon, they got home. Scully drove them straight to Mulder's apartment. It was bizarrely clean, he was missing a molly, and his sheets smelled like Scully. They crawled wordlessly into bed, Mulder curling as a support against Scully's back. They slept, dreamless, for the better part of two days.
---
Robert Haswell had grown up on a farm in Kansas. He'd brought his gawky girlfriend, one Mari Westin from podunk North Carolina, home for Thanksgiving in their junior year of college. He'd loved it and she'd hated it, said she missed home. Now the opposite was true, it seemed; she harbored a hate for Calvert’s Pass, thought the stunning warmth of Kansas was comforting. And she suspected Bobby was happy enough in Calvert Pass, despite what it had done to him. It was where their girls had been born, where they'd spent the majority of their marriage. He had loved it when she'd brought him home, insisted they move back after they got married. He thought it would be a perfect place to raise a big family.
They'd figured out about the cult in 1990, when Anna was a year old. Haswell had applied for position after position at the local police station and her application had been shot down every time. And she suddenly knew why: they didn't know what she'd do if she found out about the cult. And then they had and it had all exploded.
She'd wanted to leave right away, but Bobby told her it was a bad idea. "They're watching us, Mari," he'd said over Anna's high chair at dinner one night. "It's a small town, who knows what will happen if we try to leave? What they'll do to Anna?" And looking at her daughter's small face, in the moment it hadn't been worth it. To risk her. And years later, after Bobby was dead, it had seemed even less worth it. If she could do nothing else, she could protect his daughters. Keep them safe and alive. Try to be happy.
(She'd gotten her job as deputy after Bobby died. Like fucking compensation.)
And now here she was on her husband's farm. Walking the footsteps of her husband's ghost. It felt right, almost. Like she was closer to him even though he wasn't buried here.
Lyla ran squealing to meet her grandparents as soon as Haswell stopped the car but Anna hung back, leaning her head on her mother's shoulder. She'd been clingy since that night in the woods, and Haswell didn't blame her. She wrapped an arm around Anna's shoulders.
"Mom, you've been quiet since the plane landed," Anna said, leaning into her.
Haswell poked her in the side. "You've been quiet, too, you know." Anna made a face at her, and she sighed. "It's been a long couple of days, honey. I'm just as tired as I'm sure you are."
"Sure," said Anna at length. "You're nervous about seeing Grandma and Grandpa, aren't you?"
She'd called them to tell them Bobby had been murdered instead of dying in an accident the other day. The cadence of her mother-in-law's voice over the phone had been shaky, uncertain. Haswell couldn't read her tone. She'd been nervous about this ever since.
"I feel guilty," she said finally, quietly. "About what happened to your father, you girls..."
"Mom." Anna held up a hand to stop her. "I think you did great. Uncle Jeff... the people back home were insane. Did you know even Penny’s dad was involved? Everything was working against you, basically. I don't even know how those FBI agent people got out okay. You did the best you could. Grandma and Grandpa understand that. And besides, Daddy doesn't blame you."
Haswell's breath caught. "How do you know?"
"I dreamed about him," she said. "He said he loved and missed us. And he said he didn't blame you. He said it wasn't your fault."
Haswell took a shaky breath. Her eyes were wet and she wiped them with the tips of her fingers. Bobby didn't blame her. Even if the news came from a supposed dream, it was comforting. Besides, after all the things she'd seen through the years, it wasn't the most unusual thing in the world. "Thank you, honey," she said softly, kissing the tousled top of Anna's head.
Lyla was hugging Bobby's father now, and his mother was headed towards them. She went to Anna first, hugging her tightly. Haswell stood awkwardly, waiting, not expecting a hug until her mother-in-law came and wrapped her arms around her. "Mari," she murmured softly. "It is so good to see you."
Haswell teared up, hugging her back tightly. "Hi," she murmured. "I'm so sorry."
"Enough of that," her mother-in-law chided. "It is not your fault. Come inside and relax, you must be exhausted."
We'll be happy now, Haswell had told Lyla when they'd gotten to their hotel room. But this was the first time she'd believed it.
---
It turned out Scully had kept food in his apartment (“I was over here a lot,” she said, embarrassed, and he'd kissed the top of her head) so Mulder insisted on making breakfast. He burned the eggs, of course, but Scully insisted she didn't care. They ate off their laps on the couch, something they hadn't done since the night before he'd left for Oregon.
“Hey, Scully,” Mulder said suddenly,
“Hmm?” She shuffled her eggs around her plate.
“I don't think I should stay here anymore.”
She looked up at him in surprise. “Why not?”
“Well, there's no space for the baby here,” he said. A stunned but pleased smile spread over her face, and she looked down at her lap. “Your place, on the other hand…”
“Mulder, are you asking to move in with me?”
“Something like that,” he told her, covering her hand with his on the leather of the couch.
She grinned wider, turning her hand up under his so they matched palms. “Well. Maybe I'll say something like yes.”
“Conveniently enough, I already have a key," he said, and leaned down to kiss her.
---
Mulder had some ideas for baby names. He presented them to Scully over her comforter. She alternately wrinkled her nose or jabbed him in the side or yanked the comforter over her head. She still refused to tell him whether it was a boy or a girl. In the moment, in pajamas in Scully's sunlight bedroom, he didn't think he'd mind.
He took her to Lamaze and spouted off some wisdom from watching Oprah while she slept in. He went to an appointment he'd made with Karen Kosseff, and then picked Scully up to go to the doctor (who looked surprised to see him, but didn't comment outside of, “Is this the father?”). They went through the normal procedures, the doctor putting an emphasis on as much rest as possible, before getting ready for the ultrasound. Scully grabbed his hand in hers, resting her head against his ribcage as the doctor spread the gel across her abdomen. “I wish I could've been here the first time,” Mulder whispered. “And the second and the third and…”
She squeezed his hand. “You're here now.”
The baby appeared onscreen. “Here we are,” the doctor said. “Eight weeks. What do you think, Dad?”
Mulder gripped Scully's hand in both of his. His eyes were glued to the screen. Scully smiled, pressing her face into the crook of his elbow. “Hi, kid,” he whispered.
---
The town of Calvert Pass was crumbling. The cult had been found out, a book Reverend Greene had kept in his office. All the members were arrested. Jeff Renner, Reverend Sam Greene, and Dr. Terrence Calvert had all been found dead from gunshot wounds. And Dr. Tom Henderson beside them. His wife had wailed when they told her, collapsing against the doorframe.
It was unknown who the shooter was.
Days later, the snow had melted. A coat was no longer necessary; spring had come. Lucinda Henderson stood in the cemetery with a wilting bouquet of flowers in her hand. She was looking down at her husband's shiny new tombstone. The funeral had been scrapped together and almost no one had attended; half the town was either in custody or gone. And no one who was left was interested in the funeral of a cultist.
"Fuck you," Lucinda murmured. She was tempted to kick the headstone. "Fuck you, Tom. If you hadn't gotten involved with this... killed those people... than this never would've happened." That damn FBI agent. Why had they thought this would ever work? She didn't know who'd killed her husband, but she wished they were dead, too.
"Fuck you," she muttered again and turned, heels sinking into the spring mud.
"I know you don't mean that, dear."
Lucinda froze, shivering wildly. She knew that voice, but she didn't want to believe it.
"Come on, Lu. You know it's me."
The bright spring day suddenly seemed ominous, too dark and choking. Lucinda closed her eyes and tried not to scream. Please, she thought, don't let it be true.
"Sweetheart." It was the voice of Tom.
There was the familiar scrape of straw against bark. She'd heard it, once, when Tom took her to watch the scarecrows. But it couldn't be.
"Come over here and see me," Tom said.
Lucinda dropped the flowers and turned towards the woods. Between the trees she saw a flash of flannel, a straw hand, a burlap face. "Tom?" she called cautiously.
"It's me, Lu." The voice sounded happy. "Come here. Come see me. We can go home. You can fix dinner and we can watch Jeopardy. I bet I'll beat you tonight."
Lucinda held her breath so she wouldn't scream. That thing could not be her husband. She thought little Anna Haswell burned them all, she thought it was over. "You're dead, Tom," she said.
"Don't be silly, of course I'm not. Now come here and see me."
Lucinda went. She couldn't run, not from her husband's voice. A voice she thought she'd never hear again. She walked forward into the trees, holding her breath again. She didn't know what to expect.
And then she heard more scraping. Straw over dead leaves. There were more scarecrows, dozens. Not just Tom. She saw flashes of bent hats, beaked noses, stitched smiles. "Tom?" she called again.
"Here, Lu. Right here."
Lucinda Henderson turned towards the voice.
Seconds later, a scream echoed through the empty cemetery.
The wind whistled through the mountain in response, rustling the new leaves. Spring had come. The snow was gone.
a/n: so this is partially based off a true story.
over christmas break in 2016, my family spent the week in a cabin in the mountains. it was tiny, with walls so thin that you could pretty much hear everyone’s conversations word for word if you were in the room next to or above them. there were other cabins all around us, but we never saw the other residents. one day, we went to town and passed a house with a row of eerie scarecrows (with beaks). it soon became an inside joke that the scarecrows were evil, and killed tourists in the name of keeping the town alive. (my cousin and brother made a lot of supernatural references i didn’t get.)
one snowy night we went to the movies. it was eerily quiet going home. we went down a dark country road. my stepfather started singing a creepy song. all us kids yelled at him to stop but he kept going, and then everyone in the car screamed as we passed the fence of scarecrows.
i knew our made-up story was (probably) bullshit, but still. i was sleeping downstairs alone, on the couch, and at night, it seemed much more likely that i would see a burlap face at the window...
everything else in this story - the town, the ORIGINAL characters, the necromancy, and actually seeing the scarecrows walk - is all made up. but the scarecrows i stole from that vacation, that cold weekend in the mountains.

AU - The Joker is a famous rock star and Harleen Quinzel is an aspiring tour manager who lands a coveted summer job working for him. She's about to learn that managing him has a lot broader list of responsibilities than they taught her about in school!
No promises on update schedule - will try for every weekend but I'm so busy. This started writing itself when I was actually supposed to be writing something I get paid for. My computer is possessed, I swear it...I blame this fic on Jared Leto tweeting pictures of his crotch and distracting me from gainful employment. It is all his fault. 100%. :-)
