Friends and Family #03
“This is nice,” Maglor said, stretched out on a beach towel, as his dripping brother settled next to him, wet from running in the gentle waves with his adopted sons. He closed the novel he'd picked up at a second-hand store the day before.
Maedhros grunted, his mouth occupied by several bobby pins as he fixed his hair, recoiling the soaking braid atop his head. The whole point of pinning his hair up so tightly was to keep it out of the salt water, but he hadn’t expected Elros and Elrond to grab his hands and drag him down into a particularly large wave.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen them this happy,” Maglor continued, nodding to the boys splashing and paddling in the waves, their nearly shoulder-length hair hanging in loose, soaked clumps.
“They love it,” Maedhros said with a soft smile. He’d come up from that wave spitting sand and might have been irritated except he ended up with two armfuls of very excited peredhil. By the time he left the surf, he’d become much better at diving through waves.
They sat in silence for a minute, taking in the scene: seagulls cried overhead, keeping a sharp eye out for abandoned snacks; the twins played along the shore, a younger elf child coming over to join them; other families staked out their claim across the sand, leaving towels and umbrellas to mark their favored spots. The beach was both busy and soothing.
“We should do this more.” Maedhros decided, rinsing his mouth out with water from a bottle and then taking several drinks.
Maglor raised his eyebrows. Fëanor nearly had a fit when they announced that they’d be taking a few days off work during the week so they could do something with the boys during their school holiday. “Who’s going to tell father?”
His brother rolled his eyes in a way that would have had Fëanor pinching his ear if he were an elfling again. “He can take his doctor's advice and take up birdwatching,” He said dismissively.
As the eldest sons, they were privy to more details of their father's health than he appreciated.
Maglor snorted at the suggestion.
More seriously, Maedhros said, “Maybe just an occasional weekend, then.”
They watched the boys and their new friend join a group of older dwarves building an impressive sandcastle. Maglor smiled. “We really should.”
The sun arched across the clear blue sky. Maglor called Elros and Elrond back for lunch. They ate cold tuna salad sandwiches from the cooler on a blanket Maedhros spread on the sand so they could all sit together. Elros showed the adults the blue shell Elrond found in the tide, proudly telling them about the cool shells they found over the years on the coast further south. The younger twin hesitantly asked if he could make necklaces for them all from pieces of the shell when they went back to the city.
After lunch, the twins wanted to go back into the ocean.
“Not right after eating,” Maglor shook his head. “Wait thirty minutes.”
Elros looked like he might want to argue, but his brother grabbed his hand and demanded that he bury him under the sand so he could pretend to be a baby sea turtle.
Maedhros took off his shirt, arching his back and enjoying the warm sun on it. Their father really might have an aneurysm if he found out exactly how publicly immodest his sons got when he wasn’t there to frown at them for rolling up their pant legs. He repacked the cooler and sprawled out on the towel, stretching his long arms and legs and bumping into the other occupant. He grinned at his brother. “Join us this time,” He invited.
Maglor picked up his book and fingered the pages. “I'll get sand in my hair,” He said. He's done his hair up in a dark half bun, leaving a loose tail down his back.
“I'll braid it for you.” He said. “The rest of us need to wash tonight already.”
“Promise not to push me under?”
“I would never,” Maedhros laughed, recalling when, decades ago, they were teaching their younger brothers how to sail on a windy lake. Caranthir insisted that the flimsy life jackets couldn't possibly keep them safe in the waves, refusing to set foot on the light boat. When it became clear that he wouldn't trust the words of his brothers, Maedhros shoved Maglor off the edge, leaving him to flounder in the water until their three younger brothers boarded.
Maglor shuffled around so he faced away from Maedhros. “Go ahead and braid.”
The tall redhead sat up. He quickly undid the bun and set about dividing the other’s hair into four parts at the crown of his head.
They sat quietly while he worked, Maglor watching the other families.
A human woman with frizzled brown hair caught a child who looked about seven years old by the elbow. She wore a striped green and gray swimsuit with a white over-shirt and large sunglasses.
“Oh no you don’t, Elianor,” She admonished, pulling the girl back to the family’s towels and bins of beach toys. “You’re going to be red as a beat and peeling in the car tomorrow if you don’t put more sunscreen on.”
“Mom,” The girl complained as white ointment was slathered across her bare back and under the edges of her swimsuit.
“Do your face and ears,” The woman directed, squeezing more of the sunscreen out of a yellow bottle for her daughter before bending down to coat her legs.
Once everything was worked in and the white layer was exchanged for a slightly oily sheen, the child was released into the water. Once all the children were appropriately protected and freed, the woman popped open a beach chair and settled under an umbrella.
She looked over at Maglor as Maedhros began pinning the braid up like his own. “Some children never learn,” She said by way of explanation.
He said something in noncommittal agreement, a nagging thought starting to form in the back of his mind.
Her eyes flicked around their towels, blanket, and cooler. “Just the two of you then?” She asked.
“No,” Maglor said quickly. “The twins in red burying each other in the sand are ours.”
She looked out to where he pointed. “Cute,” She said in the way he was discovering many parents did when talking about other people’s kids. She leaned back in her chair and probably closed her eyes, though he couldn’t tell past the glasses.
Maedhros patted his head like he did when they were kids. “There you go, ready for the water.”
Maglor scooted around to face him again. “Don’t get my hair wet.”
Hands raised in surrender were his only response.
He looked down at his wristwatch. Twenty minutes still to go. That nagging feeling kept eating at him. He picked up the book again, opening to where he left off. He tried to read, but he couldn’t get back into the story.
All at once, he dropped the book and turned to Maedhros.
“We didn’t put sunscreen on them!”
“What?” The other asked, blinking as he came back from wherever the warmth sent him drifting off to.
“Elros and Elrond,” He said, looking over to where the boys were just a couple heads sticking out of the sand, several other kids having joined in on burying them. “They’re part human. They could get sunburns!”
He couldn’t believe he’d forgotten about it. He hadn’t packed sunscreen, he didn’t even think Maedhros or he had any at their homes. Such a simple, everyday thing for humans, and they’d completely forgotten about it. He dreaded to think about how painful the children’s skin would be tomorrow.
Maedhros frowned. “They’re part elf, too,” He reasoned. “Why should they get burned?”
“They might,” Maglor repeated with worry. “I should go buy some. Or maybe we should all leave so it doesn’t get any worse.”
Maedhros sighed. “It’ll be a thirty-minute drive each way. The damage is already done if it’s going to happen, so let’s not ruin the rest of the day. Besides,” He added. “They’ve clearly spent a lot of time in the water. I think they’d know if they need to worry about it.”
Personally, Maglor never thought it was too late to start mitigating damage, but his brother had made up his mind. He’d just have to deal with whatever came of it.

Chapter 1: Surfing
Somewhere in East Malaysia, on a beautiful beach where the Tortuga was parked only a few meters away from the water, the Kratt brothers were having a blast fearlessly riding huge, wild waves on their surfboards; an activity not for the faint of heart.
"Coming through!" Chris cheered, pulling off a successful bottom turn, getting ahead of his brother.
"Oh no, you don't!" Martin enthusiastically let out, getting ready for a frontside snap. "Check this out!" He reached the lip of the wave before pivoting on his fins and snapping back down the face to continue riding.
"Not bad, not bad," Chris praised with a rather sarcastic tone, then went to attempt the same movement with great confidence.
Inside the Tortuga, the brothers could be seen surfing like the mad adventurers that they were by Aviva and Koki on the big screen, both girls laughing at their competitive nature.
"They sure seem to be having fun," Aviva let out a soft laugh.
"You said it," Koki giggled in turn.
Outside, Jimmy was relaxing on his longchair with his sunglasses on and a glass of pineapple juice in hand, enjoying the quietude and peaceful atmosphere. "Ah, nothing like a day on the beach!" He stretched, having a good view of the brothers' surfing competition.
After a couple more surfing tricks, Chris and Martin decided to jump off their surfboards, letting them get pushed back on shore by the waves, and go for a swim instead. Underwater, the brothers quickly put their swimming masks on before contemplating the sea world; their surroundings were a combination of algae, seagrass, sargassum, polyps... And in addition to all the creatures in there, it was a beautiful sight to see.
In the distance, Chris' eyes caught a particular sea creature that he and his brother have been wanting to get a close look at for a while. "Martin look!" He pointed right at an oval-shaped figure swimming in the distance.
They both swam closer and closer, until realizing that it was none other than-
"A sea turtle!" They both exclaimed simultaneously. "A green sea turtle to be exact," Chris said with precision.
"I can see that," Martin rolled his eyes, but couldn't stop the smile that spread across his face from excitement.
"And it's a male, you can tell bacause he has a concave plastron," Chris swam underneath the sea turtle, who didn't care much about the brothers' presence in the first place, pointing his finger at the mentioned body part.
"Oh yeah, you're right!" Martin smiled, getting a closer look at their new friend. "And I love his greenish shell," he complimented. Then he put a finger under his chin, becoming pensive. "Your shell is emerald green, so I'll call you... Emerald!" he beamed, as if having a lightbulb moment.
"Emerald?" Chris raised an eyebrow. "Hmm, I like it."
"Thanks!"
The brothers watched their newfound aquatic friend swimming away, undisturbed, seeming at peace. Just then, Martin's creaturepod started ringing; he answered the call.
"Oh, hey Koki!" Martin waved, Chris tilting his head. "You should check out this awesome sea turtle we foun-" He was cut off.
"Guys, get outta there quick!" Koki let out panically, a fearful look on her face, the brothers giving her questioning looks. "What's wrong, Koki?" Chris asked.
Throughout their conversation, Jimmy was still looking out on the ocean when, suddenly, he noticed something strange. He took off his sunglasses and squinted his eyes to have a better look at what it was, but it wasn't long before he let out one of his famous girl screams, dropping his sunglasses and glass of juice, eyes wide from panic. Quickly, he took out his ceaturepod with clumsy hands and called the brothers, just the moment Koki was about to tell them exactly what was going on.
"Chris. Martin. There's a huge wave coming your way! And I mean HUGE!" he shrieked, Koki only nodding her head, both crewmates looking genuinely petrified.
Chris and Martin exchanged scared expressions, before swimming back up to the surface...where they could see a HUGE WAVE coming right at them!
"Swim for it, bro!" Chris yelled out as he and his brother started swimming away, but their efforts were vain, as the enormous wave caught up to them, swallowing them in a matter of seconds.
From the Tortuga, the crew watched as the brothers disappeared from sight on the big screen. "NO!" They all let out at once.
"Where are they?" Jimmy asked with a scared tone.
"I don't know, I don't see them!" Aviva said worriedly.
"Look, it's Chris!" Koki pointed at the screen, where Chris' head could be seen popping out of the water. He caught his breath before scanning his surroundings, expecting to find his brother by his side, but he was nowhere to be seen.
"Martin?" He called out... Still nothing.
"Martin, it's not funny!" He tried yet again but to no avail. His stomach dropped as a horrible thought crept into his mind.
Without a moment to spare, he dove back into the water, not caring that he no longer had his mask on, having lost it back there. There, not too far, he could see a familiar figure floating in the water, motionless...
Martin!

I’m Back from Vacay/Life Update/Writing Update
Gonna getcha up to date on Hiddenland beneath the cut!
Tumblr media
Vacation
I returned from the US Virgin Islands, St. Thomas yesterday.  We were there for 5 days.  I’ve never been, and I’ve also never taken a “do nothing” vacation, so it was an adventure, lol!
We stayed near Red Hook in an air B&B.  The internet basically persuaded me not to try a resort, citing crowded resorts, lack of privacy, etc- also, a lot of resorts don’t really provide easy access to a beach.  Our unit had its own pool, which was a huge selling point...  But unfortunately, it was fed by ice cold spring water.  Literally, when we hurt our feet, we put them in the pool to reduce the swelling.  So...  Well, I was disappointed by that.
But the beaches were stunning, with turquoise water that you could walk into- it was fairly warm, I mean, not “ooof ughh coldcoldcold!”.  I guess the trouble was getting out, since there were constant breezes on the beach, enough for kite surfing in some places.
So if you know me, you might know that I have anxiety and that I’m...  Busy brained?  I was so antsy the first day of the trip, thinking-  Is this really fun?  Wouldn’t doing something be better?  But after about three hours of sitting on the beach, my brain flipped off like a switch.  I never felt like...  “Ahhhh, so relaxed.”  Actually, I don’t know if I’ve ever felt that.  But my brain did go quiet, and I read three books in five days, lol.
We also went on a turtle snorkel and sunset sailing tour.  We did see one green sea turtle, and thank goodness, because snorkeling in St. Thomas was nothing like snorkeling in Hawaii, at least not where we went.  In Hawaii, there’s always something to look at, all kinds of colorful fish.  In St. Thomas, I saw one turtle and a handful of sea stars.  The sailing was nice, though- I’ve never sailed before.
I also got horrendously sunburned the first day.  You know how it is- that first day, I’m all cute in my swimsuit, feeling great.  The second day, I’m wearing a swim shirt, swim trunks for ladies (truly the best thing ever), swim socks, a hat, sunglasses, and visible regret.  Seriously, I really hurt myself, I was in agony.  I applied and reapplied the heck out of my 50 SPF sunscreen, too, so I’m pissed.
If you want more details, let me know, because I learned a lot on the trip about vacationing in St. Thomas.  Overall, I’d say it was a nice lowkey experience, but damn the sunburns and the ice pool were upsetting.
Tumblr media
Also, my shy cat recognized me right away when I came home, which was a relief!  On my last trip, she treated me like I was a stranger wearing a Hidden suit for a few days x_x
Life Update
I feel like I’ve just been...  Adjusting?  To a new life?  The last few months.  I can say that my new job really is a mental health improvement over the last one.  I also get paid more- like appreciably more, and it turns out that this also reduces stress (who knew, right? /sarcasm).  But it is still a huge adjustment, and I’ve already found some of the new problems in the new place (mainly that they are hiring more people than they have space for, and they just... keep... hiring and telling us to deal with it however we want).
I’ve also been focusing on health, particularly exercising and reducing my resting heart rate.  I already reduced it by 2 bpm in about 6 weeks!  Taking better care of my physical self truly is possible, like in quantifiable ways (which makes my scientist brain happy).  It just helps to have small, manageable goals, and to focus on health rather than weight.
Writing News
So for most of camp digimonth, we had daily 45 min sprints for our writers and artists on the discord.  It was really fun to create together, and I’m so proud of everyone!
I hate to say it, but I basically wrote or finished two new chapters, and barely touched my nanowrimo draft.  I also completed an artwork and am mostly done with another.  Er- basically, I did a lot, but also not...  What I...  Thought I would?
Soooo I am thinking that updates to PdA will start again in late February or early March, to give me more time to make a ready-to-post content buffer.
And on that note, I’m going to go write!  Much love, mwah!  I hope you’re all doing amazing.

Day 3- St. John
Monday, May 1st, 2023
Today was the day to officially headover to St. John! We were really looking forward to this because we had heard that St. John was even more beautiful than St. Thomas. Cody and I were pretty well rested from our early nights, however the hot Caribbean sun was starting to wear us out a little. We decided that the 11 am car ferry would be best, and we would be coming back on the 6:15 pm car ferry to St. Thomas. We both were slightly worried that it wouldn’t be enough time on St. John but 8:30am was too early of a start for our days so far. We started our day with our routine of walking to Lattes in Paradise, and working out. I have yet to mention that Cody also enjoyed a morning ritual of jumping in our pool. It’s worth the mention as Cody really really enjoyed doing this every single day. Once we were ready for the day, we ventured down the hill to Redhook to partake in some shopping before our 11am ferry ride. We went to the local Caribean Surf Co shop where we chatted with some local friends. Cody made them laugh, go figure. I decided that I wanted to get all of the girls coming to our wedding some beachy bracelets! I enjoyed picking out bracelet bundles for all of the girls. We also shipped off our postcards to the states and met a really nice lady in the post office. She gave us some lovely marriage advice- do not have bad days on the same day. If he is having a bad day, let him. We were very touched by her warm hearted advice to us. We still had plenty of time to kill, so we crossed the street to the other shopping strip. We wandered in a couple stores and I ended up purchasing a wide brimmed beach hat because my forehead was getting so burnt from the Caribbean sun. We made our way back to our car where we found a big, orange, aggressive towing sticker on our back window. Cody and I both panicked that we were going to followed and towed, or ticketed. It gave us so much stress for about 30 minutes until google assisted us with realizing that the sticker was just a threat. Nothing more. Now off to St. John!
We waited for the car ferry for quite some time, as we were early to load. The car ferry was a cool experience! I finally had to let Cody drive the Jeep because you had to back up onto the boat. I think he enjoyed me asking him to finally drive around. Once we arrived to St. John, we took off to our furthest destination of Cinnamon Bay! We were pretty instantly blown away by just how beautiful St. John was. Everyone was right- St. John was somehow more beautiful than St. Thomas. Since it is a protected National Park, it was undeveloped and felt like driving through a jungle. The water was a more torquise blue, and somehow more crystal clear. The people we encountered on St. John were also more friendly. Not to mention, the roads were so much nicer as well. No massive potholes to dodge every foot. Cody was really looking forward to snorkeling, so we rented snorkeling gear for the day. We found an almost shady spot along the edge of the beach and made camp for the day. Our soft plan was to go to Cinnamon Bay and then back track to Trunk Bay.
Upon getting into the water, we saw a big barracuda! Honestly, I was freaked out by it but it was cool to see such a big predatory fish right by your legs. We decided that we wanted to go ahead and scope out snorkeling! The rental girl said that there was an airplane wing, lots of wild life such as turtles, and also a reef along the beach. Cody and I saw many cute, colorful fish and coral. We snorkeled quite a ways down the beach and proceeded to get pretty worn out after about only 1 hour. When we came back to our spot on the beach, our neighbors suggested that we go over to Maho Beach as that is where all of the sea turtles will be due to the grassy bottom. Cody and I were interested but hesitant to go over to Maho because we rented our gear from Cinnamon Bay. We spent quite some time hanging out on Cinnamon Bay and watching a big group of locals having fun in the water. After a couple of hours in the sun, we impulsively decided it was time for a change of scenery and opted to head out to Maho Beach! We only had about an hour left with our snorkel gear, and about 3 hours before we had to head to the car ferry.
Maho Beach was so cute! They had so many little food trucks, and the beach was very crowded much like all of the beaches on St. John. We quickly hopped in the water to make the most of our time left with the snorkel gear. Cody and I hit the ground running and scoping out sea life. We didn’t see much at first, but after some time, the animals started popping up. First we saw a small stingray! Cody was freaked out by the sting ray, as he thought it was blowing sand up at him. He ended up seeing another one as well but I unfortunately missed it due to my excitement for looking for turtles. Just when I thought we may not find any turles, we stumbled upon the biggest turtle we saw during our entire trip. He was probably at least 3 feet wide and long. He had 2 bottom feeding sharks attached to him. He was in about only chest deep water. He was so cool! I was shocked at how big he was! Cody and I were the only ones around him too, no one else had discovered him in that area yet. While we were enjoying the sight of him, we heard some people nearby us exclaiming that they had a little turtle near them! We rushed over to see a small little guy. He was so white and clean compared to all of te other turtles we saw on our trip. Satisified that we had found 2 turtles, we then exited the water and went to turn our snorkel gear back in before 4pm.
We still had 2 hours to kill so we headed over to Trunk Bay to end our day there. Unfortunately at Trunk Bay, all of their amenities were closed when we got there but that was okay with us. We had done all of the things we wanted to do so far that day. Trunk was so beautiful and is St. John’s most busy beach! Trunk Bay actually has a snorkeling trail. We would love to check that out next time we visit the islands. After many hours on the beach and in the sun, Cody and I mainly just relaxed at Trunk Bay. We did watch a woman get bullied and attacked by sea gulls though, a sight that I will never forget. She was eating a container of food, when sea gulls started barating her. She eventually got scared, ran away, and dropped her food. Probably 30 sea gulls were flocking at her. I know she was scared to death but it was so funny.
This was about the extent of our day! We rode home on the car ferry and enjoyed the most beautiful sunset on the water. We grabbed a quick salad dinner at the local grocery store Moe’s. We swam in the pool and called it an early night again. We needed a good night’s rest because we had such a long day on St. John. It was one for the books! We decided that we would always be staying at St. John in the future due to how nice it was!

Luni's holiday at Gacha Resort day 2 part 3
This was posted on 18 July.
When they are here at the beach, they laid down the beach towels and placed down parasols before they quickly changed to the swimwear they need in the changing room.
When everyone finished, they all rushed to the water and jumped in.
Lusa: Ahh...this felt better.
Charlotte: Since we're here in the water, shall we do something?
Charlotte packed up a water jet filled to the top with water and aimed at Luni.
Luni: I'm up.
Luni takes out her water jet.
The two looked at each other and started shooting water.
Lusa wanted to play with them but she didn't have a water jet. So she asked Luni that she wants to play, and Luni made a water jet using her creator skills.
Ellie: Luni, I don't think that's a water jet. It looked larger and more broad.
Lusa prepared and aimed at Luni. The water gains pressure in the water jet and questioned Lusa.
And yes. Ellie and Charlotte knew it's not a water jet.
Ellie: Luni, look out!
Tumblr media
Before it was shot out, Charlotte pushed Lusa away from Luni's range of vulnerability and a large ball of water was sent up into the sky.
In the distance, there's a little pirate ship heading towards Gacha Resort. The ball of water dived directly onto the ship and Luni can only see an explosion of water rising up in the distance.
Pirate Jessie: The ship is sinking! Throw some men overboard!
The ship sank and men were tossed out of the ship.
Mumble and the crew are practicing snorkelling. They've put on their masks and snorkels, and their heads went into the water. The snorkel pipes out onto the surface began to move about as they go about and when it's ready to go back up, their heads came back up.
Mumble: We should go deeper! Shall we?
Hansuke: Um, I don't think we can.
Kaiya: Uhh...no thanks.
Kinen teaches Abushu the Bunny how to swim. She shows her how to paddle with her feet, to use her arms to push herself forward, and new skills Abushu can learn when swimming.
Senpaibuns could not stay in the water for too long or her tail would get at least soaked. So she was the first to leave the water.
As Senpaibuns used a towel to catch every droplet on her tail, Alisa and Yukina quickly followed behind Senpaibuns and asked Mizumi if she would follow them.
Tumblr media
Alisa: Mizumi, Senpaibuns had left the water already, so will you join us here?
Mizumi would rather continue swimming.
Alisa brought her basket of necessities with her, Yukina went to get a popsicle and they sat under the parasol with Senpaibuns.
Senpaibuns: Mizumi! You can't play out in the sun for too long without sunscreen!
Mizumi quickly waddled across the water and ran to sit under the parasol with them. She is always dripping with the water from her hair wherever she goes, and it gets more wet when she leaves the water after swimming.
Senpaibuns took out a bottle of lotion, opened and squeezed it. The bottle was almost empty and only one drop of lotion came out.
Mizumi: Oh dear.
Yukina: Senpaibuns it felt like I'm meeelting...
They cannot wait any longer.
Alisa thought of her talent and decided to take out something.
Mizumi: ?
What's that?
Alisa: It's a piece of aloe. The gel-like substance in the aloe protects you from the sun rays and the hot weather. It is a better and natural choice.
Tumblr media
Alisa poured out a drop of aloe solution onto her hand and applied it onto herself. She handed the piece of aloe to Senpaibuns and she also lathered aloe solution on herself, before passing it to Yukina for her to use and give it to Mizumi.
Senpaibuns: So anyway, where's Pat?
Pat grabbed a kickboard and a noodle, and rushed to the water. He threw the kickboard onto the water, then went face flat onto the kickboard and held the noodle in front of him. He was swept away into the distance.
Along the way, he came across the Gacha Whale, spending a couple more Gachabucks on Gachas.
He met Otto the sea turtle, riding the ocean currents.
Otto: Surf's up dude!
Pat eventually ended up stranded in the middle of the sea.
A grey fin circles around the kickboard. Pat gave a worried smirk, as the fin leapt out of the water.
Pat realised he forgot to keep a fish in the ice box. He picked it up from his hand.
Pat: Okay shark, if you keep trying to circle around people, you must be hungry! Here, have this fish!
Pat threw the fish and it couldn't be seen when the shark clashed its jaws shut and swam away. The ripples from the shark swimming away from Pat pushed him back to shore.
Radd and Senpaibuns got themselves refreshments at Sandy's pineapple hut. Radd has a coconut smoothie while Senpai Artz sipped on a blue mocktail.
Lemo and Yuni are building a sandcastle with a diversity of seashells and and little moat around it. Lado, who borrowed the camera from Kinen, took a picture of them and the castle and before she pressed the trigger...
*POMF*
The sandcastle was hit by a beach ball and it collapsed.
Lemo and Yuni made a lookout into the distance. There came a very active teen, running towards Lemo and Yuni.
Very active teen: I'm Beachball-chan! I've ran here to get the ball.
Beachball-chan looked down at the sandcastle.
Beachball-chan: Oh, and sorry for the castle. Wanna play a game of Beachball as a favour in return?
Yuni: Yup
Lemo: Alright then.
Lado: Uhh, I-
Beachball-chan: Let's do this!
Lado is the first to play.
Beachball serves the ball.
Poor Lado seemed a little too lazy to even play. She maybe able to run fast and have keen eyesight, but Lado isn't in the mood to run now. So she keeps collapsing.
It's Lemo's turn.
Beachball serves the ball. Lemo did great in the game. After a few passes, Beachball had her chance to do one last spike to wrap it up. She jumped up and slapped the ball down. Lemo lost sight of the ball, only to realise it was just sitting on the sand, on her left side.
Yuni stood up and Beachball serves the ball.
Yuni struggled to pass the ball, but she did pretty well there and got to the part when Beachball does the final spike to end the round.
Yuni managed to catch the ball and passed it to Beachball's side of the court, and the ball lands on the sand.
Luni and Charlotte decided to leave the water to split watermelons, so they had to get there quickly before it gets crowded with all sorts of people.
They picked up a white towel, a bat, and a round and shiny green melon. And before they could even start, a girl in a hot pink bikini got her hands on the bat just before they could put theirs down.
She swung the bat and the melon was unfortunately squished.
The girl is Summer. She is not too good at games, but she loves the summer.
Summer: Are you playing today?
Charlotte: Yeah, and I'm here give it my best shot at it.
So Luni cover's Charlotte's face with the towel and handed her the bat. She aimed, prepared and swung the bat down. The watermelon was perfectly split open into halves.
Summer: Wow! That was cool!
Luni cuts the watermelon into triangular slices and they all finished them.
Luni went next. So Charlotte wrapped her with the towel and gave her the bat.
Ellie sat on the lid of a barrel of watermelons.
Luni aimed, prepared and swung, not on the watermelon, but on the lid of the barrel. This sent Ellie into the air and she fell into the sea.
Ellie, with her head bobbing above the sea level: Be more careful next time!!
It's getting late now as Kinen and Abushu on a beach chair, and Lusa laying on a beach towel, are watching the sun set.
A mysterious silhouette what looks like a girl with a fish's tail jumped out of the water and splashed into the sea, appears in front of Lusa and she decided to follow where the rainbow is from.
Lusa: *gasp* It looks like a mermaid! I should follow it!
She got up and followed the mermaid.
Lusa ran past the parasol, on the sand and waded through the shallow water. It gets deeper, but Lusa managed to find the mermaid, sitting on a rock. The tail disappeared and became a pair of legs with her toes dipped into the water.
Mermaid: Hi! I'm Coral! I'm a mermaid. Mermaids like me have a fish's tail instead of legs when in water, but when we come up to experience the sea breeze, our tail disappears to become a pair of legs.
Lusa: Wonderful! I'm happy to learn something new.
Coral used her mermaid magic to bring Lusa back to shore and dived into the sea with her tail and swam away into the horizon.
When the stars come out, Pat sets out a fire under the barbecue and made skewers from fish, mushrooms and colourful bell peppers, He also made corn on the cob for himself. So after a tiring night of preparing, Pat sat down with the corn and nibbled down each little piece one by one.
Into the sky were some fireworks set lighted and aloft. When they reach their limit, they blow up to become sparkles of light and colour.
Radd and Senpaibuns spent the night on a beach towel, watching the fireworks.
It's 10 in the night and everyone changed back to a new set of their original clothes, cleared up and went back to the hotel to have a good night's rest. Senpaibuns opened her room's door to see her roommates fast asleep.

Day 4 MAUI June 3
Wake up time was 430 as we had a scheduled diving tour (for Dan) and snorkeling tour for me. We drove to the dock where we would embark the fastest boat to Molokini island. This was a boomerang shaped piece of land that was famous for there coral reefs. As I was the only snorkeler, I was to follow the divers as I watched them below.
There was a couple on the boat that kept to themselves (from Northern California) and a solo diver from Israel who was receptive to conversation. Everyone looks forward to Molokini to snorkel or dive the "back wall." Divers are attracted to the natural current that takes them around the island there. The problem with the inside of Molokini is that it is a popular tourist spot for snorkelers. The amount of snorkelers there could be blamed for the destruction of the reef. It's super important to wear reef safe sunscreens, as a lot of tourists still do not.

So after 45 minutes of diving (and snorkeling) I pretty much hovered above the divers and didn't see too much of the reef. We never saw Molokini as the divers hit a drift and were not able to make it there. Which meant I was not able to do so..
We headed to the next dive area known for their sea turtles off the shore. The shore dive gave me more freedom to explore the reef. I was able to see several sea turtles and was with other tourists who literally walked out from the beach to snorkel.
Once we all finished, Dan took photos with our cheap underwater camera of a shark he saw along with a "newdiebreak." I was first on the boat and was able to take the first hot shower. And the water was HOT from the hose. Once all the divers came back on the boat they were able to remove their equipment and we headed back to Scuba Shacks boat launch.
Tumblr media
Actually the hot shower and the boat ride back was the funnest part of the tour. We almost were flown off the boat as the driver let us stand up when he took a 90 degree turn going probably 40 mph.
When we returned to our awesome camp site, we went across the street and bought convenient store egg salad sandwiches and random desserts that were more Filipino than Hawaiian tradition. I was dying and needed a nap.
Recommend the Olowalu bar!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We drove back into our campground across the street. I immediately took a 2 hour nap in our hammock. I woke up and Dan was gone with the jeep. I waited for another hour and started walking out toward the main road. Conveniently, Dan drove up with some hot dogs. I just ate prior to napping so I felt like a gluten.
The drive to our beach campsite!
Dan and I actually snorkeled just outside our camp site and found these amazing tunnels of coral reefs with sea turtles all over the place. I give Dan credit because he found them while I was napping. The coral reefs were healthy with plenty of fish. Our Olowalu camp site had the best snorkeling we found with no other people around. It was cool Dan saw a shark during his dive, but for snorkeling, I recommend off the coastline self guided snorkels. There's no restrictions when you're on your own and it's FREE!
Tumblr media
I don't think we did much more this day. Even after less than a week from not jotting things down, small details disappear.
We took advantage of the showers at the campsite. We also realized we left our rain cover off during the day and the inside of Our tent was covered in sand. We slept in dirt but it's okay.
The next day is Fourth of July! Our last day in Maui. The only plan we had was going to Leheina where they had Outrageous Surf School.

Let My Love Open the Door
Hello, I have no idea what I’m doing. But here goes.
Jiara Week 2021
Day 7
4 times the door was locked, plus one time it wasn’t.
It was a miracle no one had called him out before on the way he’d been staring at her all day, even though he knew he’d been less than subtle no matter how hard he tried. Now, he was giving up. He looked down from the long line of her throat, to the slice of skin exposed between her top and her shorts, and her legs that just went on and on forever. She grinned at him and sauntered past, ghosting her fingers across his arm and tossing him a look over her shoulder.
“Come on.”
“Release yourself from misery
There’s only one thing gonna set you free”
- Let My Love Open The Door by Pete Townsend
1.
The sun setting over the Boneyard had a way of signaling to everyone there that now was when the fun really began. Pogues, Kooks, and Tourons alike mingled, the sound of laughter and music permeating the air as the teens gathered on the beach danced together with half full beer cans held aloft. The summer heat lessened with the loss of the sun, but there was still a sheen of sweat on everyone’s skin that glistened in the light from the fire pits, the lanterns and flashlights scattered around, and the moon overhead.
Kiara downed the last of her beer, her head tipped back as her eyes searched around to see who she would coerce into dancing with her. It wasn’t unusual for her to lead one of her friends closer to the music, not that they were difficult to convince. One nod of her toward the other dancing bodies, or one knowing smirk paired with a crook of her finger, and one of her boys would gladly follow her into the crowd. A lot of the time, she found herself dancing with John B. He was generous with his affection and would never say no when she asked. Pope wasn’t much of a dancer, and when she’d drag him along he’d really just shuffle awkwardly and try to make sure his eyes didn’t stray anywhere potentially inappropriate. Mostly, she would try to catch JJ before he was flirting with some unsuspecting girl, if he wasn’t already dancing or otherwise engaged somewhere.
Tonight, he was already looking at her. Honestly, he’d been watching her all day, ever since he showed up at the Chateau and found her and John B investigating what was under the Twinkie’s popped hood. She was bent over the engine, wearing nothing but a bikini top and shorts. It was almost painful as the afternoon dragged on, the confident way she grabbed tools from the toolbox and argued with John B over what to try next. She enjoyed the work, and she was good at it. She was also beyond beautiful with her hair falling out of her bun, into her face, her skin streaked with dirt and oil. He was sure she had to know how beautiful she was, and also that it meant absolutely nothing to her. Sure, she’d been known to use it to her advantage. One flirty smile from her was like a tractor beam that no one could escape from. No one JJ had met, anyway. But she was more concerned with surfing and sea turtles and keeping plastic out of the oceans, and JJ would never have the guts to admit out loud but her considerable beauty was no match for the person she was inside.
“Come on.”
He followed immediately, caught up in the way her hips swayed with the music. Kiara wasn’t necessarily a touchy person, and JJ had a good sense of when to give her some space and when she might let him get a little closer. Tonight, she was draping her arms over his shoulders as she moved. His hands gripped her hips, eyes locked on her smile. He pushed her gently away, grasping her arm as she went and spinning her. She laughed and when she landed with her back to his front, she leaned into him, impossibly close as they danced.
There was no one else on the beach. Not their friends watching them with amusement and maybe a little jealousy, not the Kooks talking shit because they were probably jealous too. It was only them, the music, the sticky heat that clung to them and made it hard to breathe. Or maybe it was being so close, with his arm locked across her hips to hold her to him, her hand reaching back to get lost in his hair.
His lips brushed her neck, just barely. She turned back around and he missed her even though she was still in his arms. For a moment he thought she would back away, but instead she rested her elbows on his shoulders, returning her hands to his hair as they swayed. His fingers crept under the hem of her shirt, slipping through the sweat. The night air seemed to get heavier, pressing in on them so they got closer, closer. He was sure that his heart was either racing astronomically or it had stopped beating altogether. All his senses registered nothing but Kiara, her scent of weed and flowery shampoo, the feel of her skin, soft beneath his fingertips. The sight of her getting lost in the music and the party, completely filling his vision. The need to taste her gripped at him, pulling at his strings like he was a puppet whose movements were not under his own control.
JJ rested his forehead against Kiara’s, watching her mouth. He could have sworn that her eyes were on his mouth too, and he almost groaned when she bit her bottom lip between her teeth. It was involuntary when his chin tilted forward, his lips just a breath away from hers.
Something in her expression changed, like the spell was broken and reality was crashing in on her. Her arms dropped, her hand smacking him lightly on the chest on the way.
“Nice try, Maybank.”
She stretched her arms over her hand, digging her hands into her curls. Pinning him with a smile, she reached out to point at him. “I’m gonna get another beer, you want?”
He declined, forcing himself to smile back before tossing a glance over his shoulder. “Gonna keep checking out what’s going on here.”
For a moment he thought she was going to stay, but then she nodded in agreement and told him she’d see him in a bit and made her way back to their friends.
2.
The creaking floorboard jerked JJ awake, his fists flying up defensively even though his eyes didn’t know where to look. At last, he noticed a shape as it passed the pullout where he’d been asleep. There was just enough light from the window for him to make out Kiara’s face, her expression sheepish.
“Sorry, I was trying to be quiet.”
“S’cool. Everything okay?” he replied, wincing as he sat up. He rubbed the heel of his hand at his eye, and cringed at the dryness in his mouth.
“I’m just getting some water,” she told him, and continued onto the kitchen. She was standing at the sink, filling a glass, when he realized she was wearing a shirt that looked a lot like one of his, and nothing else. The hem just barely covered her ass, and his eyes roamed up her legs, from the ankles she had crossed as she leaned forward against the sink, up, up, and up to the smooth skin of her thighs and the casual tilt of her hips. He swiped a hand over his face, trying to pull it together and remember how to breathe. It wasn’t like he hadn’t seen Kiara in the tiniest of bikinis, but there was something different about her being half dressed for sleep. Here in the dark, quiet house, just the two of them awake, the sight of her bare legs and maybe a quick glimpse of her underwear was way more intimate than any bathing suit she could ever wear.
He realized she was walking back toward him, surprising him when she sat on the edge of the mattress and handed him his own glass of water. He thanked her and took a long sip, trying to keep his eyes off her legs when she was looking right at him.
“Nice shirt,” he joked. She glanced down at herself, and even in the moonlight he was sure he saw her blush.
“Sorry - I took a shower here earlier and I didn’t want to put my old clothes back on. I found this in Big John’s room, hope you don’t mind.”
“By all means,” he said, gesturing a nonchalant hand toward her.
They were quiet for a moment, sipping their waters in the dark, hushed room. Then, JJ tapped Kiara’s knee quickly.
“So, are you ever going to forgive John B?”
She rolled her eyes. “No.”
“I mean, it can’t be that bad if you’re still sleeping here. Besides, come on, Kie. Where’s your sense of romance?”
“Romance and Sarah Cameron do not exist in the same universe. She’s got an ulterior motive, Jayj. Even if she doesn’t know it yet. She’s going to mess this gold thing up,” she said, picking at the pilling on the sheets. “And she’s going to hurt him.”
“I mean, I feel like the obvious reply here is like ‘John B is a big boy, he can handle it.’, but obviously… it’s John B. There’s a good chance he cannot, in fact, handle it. If she were to like, ‘cobra’ him or whatever.”
Kiara looked up at him from under her lashes with a smirk. Encouraged, JJ continued.
“But, he’s got us looking out for him. That’s gotta count for something, right?”
She didn’t say anything, just took another sip from her glass and continued to stare down at the sheets, fidgeting. It killed him to see her so frustrated. Even worse now that they were alone in the dark and he was looking at her more closely, and he could sense that whatever Sarah did to Kiara had hurt her more than she’d ever admit.
He thought about John B’s recount of his kiss with Kiara, and he fought down the jealous part of him as he wondered if maybe there was something there that Kiara was just refusing to give in to. Convincing John B that Kiara liked him was a bit of an experiment. How would she react if one of her boys made a move? Well, a move she felt was genuine, because she never seemed to take JJ seriously when he flirted. He was a little bit ashamed of how thrilled he was when Kiara turned John B down, a little less so that she attributed it to “No Pogue on Pogue macking”. Still, it made him feel that maybe there was a chance for him, however microscopic. But if turning down John B was something she regretted, then watching the guy get wrapped around Sarah’s finger… Well, if that was the case, losing the gold to the girl would be one thing. But losing John B would be something else entirely.
“And y’know, it’s just John B. You still have me. I promise, you don’t gotta share me.”
Finally, she gave him a mild smile. “Take that, Sarah Cameron.”
JJ grinned, tapping her again on the knee, but this time he let his fingers linger. “I’d choose you, Kie. Every time.”
Her skin was so soft, he couldn’t help but skim his fingers over it. He could have sworn he saw her swallow, and her eyes were unreadable in the low light. His heart started to beat loudly in his chest, and he was sure she could hear it. He strained his ears to see if he could hear hers too. Without him meaning to, his hand spread out over her leg and squeezed. He ducked his head, trying to get her to meet his gaze.
He would kill to know what she was thinking right now. It was never quite clear how far she would let him go. Sometimes it felt like they were a breath away from letting themselves get carried away, but inevitably, she would push him away with a roll of her eyes, acting like it was a joke he was taking just a little too far. He desperately wanted her to know that it wasn’t a joke. The feeling that lived inside him was so much more than lust, and when it came to her, he wasn’t just looking for a good time. His hand shifted higher, his thumb sweeping over the inside of her thigh. For a second, he thought that maybe she was reaching out for his hand. God, he wished that’s what she would do. But instead, she held out her hand expectantly.
“You done with that?”
He handed her his empty glass and said thanks. He watched her walk back to the kitchen and place both cups in the sink, and then back into Big John’s room, maybe not trying quite so hard to be quiet this time.
“Night JJ.”
“Night Kie.”
3.
“You got your lighter?”
“What kind of question is that?” JJ replied, giving Kiara an incredulous look as she appeared next to the hammock. He was stretched out luxuriously, halfway asleep. His brow lifted with interest when she held up the joint she had pinched between her fingers, giving it a little wiggle to entice him.
“Found your shit, thought you’d appreciate it if someone rolled you a J for once.”
“You’re the perfect woman, Kie.”
He was rewarded with a little chuckle, and she climbed into the hammock with him. She took the opposite side, her legs sliding along his as she settled in.
“You want to do the honors?” she asked, handing over the joint. He accepted with his best approximation of a chivalrous nod, and snapped open his zippo. His hands cupped around the flame as he held it to the end of the joint, and when he pulled them away he held the smoke briefly in his lungs. He let it billow slowly out his nose as he passed the joint back to Kiara, trying his best to pretend he didn’t feel a little spark of… something when their fingers brushed.
“So,” she said. “John B and Sarah.”
“God only knows how they do it, right? Just can’t seem to keep themselves out of trouble. Thank god we’re not like that.”
Kiara laughed, loud and genuine. It was JJ’s favorite sound. She took a drag, looking out across the yard pensively. The sun was just setting, washing her in a golden glow. If he thought she was beautiful the rest of the time, he didn’t have words for what she was now.
“We’ll get ‘em back,” she said decisively. “We’re gonna figure it out.”
“Damn straight we are,” he agreed.
They continued to pass the joint back and forth in a comfortable silence. JJ was someone who was usually making some kind of noise, but somehow it was easy to sit there with Kiara. Saying nothing, doing nothing. Somehow, being alone with Kiara made it easy to just exist.
She was the first to break the silence. “Still can’t believe you made me go in that storm drain.”
“Yea, sorry about that,” he agreed. He smiled a little out of habit, but there was no humor in his voice. He didn’t know how to admit the fear that had gripped him when he realized she was trapped. The absolute panic when he wasn’t sure if they’d be able to get her out. He didn’t think he’d ever forgive himself for it, regardless of the fact that the mission was a success. Of course it was. It was Kiara.
“You’re an absolute badass for getting that gun though.”
“That was pretty good, right?” she said with a cocky grin. “Fuckin’ Shoupe though…”
“Fuckin’ Shoupe.”
He wrapped a hand around her calf, pulling her attention. “I really am sorry about the storm drain.”
She shrugged, surprising him by not shaking him off. “It all worked out in the end.”
He couldn’t tell her how little consolation that was, so he just nodded. His fingers itched to brush over her skin, but whatever was happening felt fragile. He was afraid to make a wrong move. All his moves seemed to be wrong, honestly. And anyway, he wasn’t sure what was going on with her and Pope. Seeing them kiss had all but crushed him. He was having to actively remind himself that these were his two best friends, and he wanted them to be happy even if it meant he wasn’t. Pope wasn’t sharing any information, though, and Kiara sure as shit wasn’t talking about it. He had no idea if they were something or nothing, and the lack of clarity was possibly killing him.
He was dying to ask, but since this was Kiara, sitting with him in the fading light, letting him into her space, he knew better. The last thing he needed was for her to decide that he was fishing for gossip or acting as Pope’s messenger. There was no doubt trying to open up that line of conversation was asking for trouble. She wouldn’t believe for a second that he’d want to be her wingman. She probably didn’t think he knew how. He knew her, though. She needed someone to listen to her vent, even if he couldn’t offer any advice. And the more he thought about it, the more he thought it was for the best she didn’t open up to him because just the idea of listening to her talk about falling for someone else broke him a little. For now, being the person Kiara sat with, quietly with their own thoughts and closer than he thought he had any right being, that would have to be enough.
4.
The inhabitants of Poguelandia were in remarkably good spirits for being stranded on an apparently deserted island in the Caribbean. They had been spending their days alternating between foraging for food, investigating the island for any signs of life, and horsing around in the water. When the sky was dark and dotted with sparkling stars, they’d add fresh wood to their firepit and gather around it. It was a lot like back home, really. Except JJ could feel Kiara’s concerned gaze on him almost all the time. She’d eye his wound, occasionally making him stand still to make sure it was healing well, that he didn’t reopen it or cover it with dirt and sand. He never complained. How could he, after what she had done for him?
And yet, he hadn’t gotten the chance to talk to her about or thank her, because they never had a moment to themselves. It seemed strange, because back home they were alone all the time. On the island, though, every time it was just the two of them she would wander off, or call out for one of their friends. She would talk to him and laugh at his jokes, and she even slept right next to him. It was like she was there, but she was so far away at the same time.
They must have been on the island for about a week the night he woke up and realized she wasn’t lying beside him. He spotted her a little farther down the beach, just a dark shadow  sitting at the edge of the water. Quietly as he could, he got up and joined her, sitting down directly next to her without saying a word. She tensed up a bit, and it crushed him a little on the inside.
“Couldn’t sleep?” he asked her.
She didn’t look at him, just continued to stare out at the water with her arms wrapped around her knees. “Nope.”
“Is everything okay?”
“We’re on a deserted island, JJ,” she scoffed.
“Fair point,” he said. “But seriously, Kie. Are you okay?”
He glanced at her face and saw tears beginning to fall from her eyes. Worry gripped him, but he didn’t know what to do.
“Please tell me what’s wrong,” he begged. He wanted to reach out to her. To throw an arm over her shoulders, or take her up in his arms and hold her. She looked so fragile, drawn in on herself and overwhelmed.
“I’m so mad at you,” she whispered.
“What? Why?”
“You could have died, JJ.”
The reality of what Kiara had done started to take shape in JJ’s mind. He had pieced together the story based on everyone’s recollection - Kiara saying he got hit with the hilt of the machete and fell off the ship, she jumped after him and held him afloat until the others came around in the lifeboat. John B told him that it looked like Kiara was barely hanging on by the time they got there, and they were at risk of slipping beneath the surface before their friends reached them. Sarah had described the desperate look on Kiara’s face, both in the water and when they were finally on the lifeboat. He had heard the entire thing, he knew that Kiara had saved his life and risked her own to do it. He knew she was terrified before he woke up and he saw the relief on her face himself when he finally did. It wasn’t until now, though, that it occurred to him that she might be slightly broken over everything they’d gone through.
“I’m so sorry, Kie.”
“You shouldn’t have taken that hit for me,” she told him, finally meeting his eyes. The anger in them might be more convincing if she wasn’t still crying.
“He was attacking you, you can’t think that I’d…” he faltered, not able to form his thoughts into words. “It wasn’t a choice. He was going to hurt you.”
“And he did hurt you. JJ, I thought -” she sucked in a sharp breath and looked away. “I thought you were gonna die. What if I couldn’t…”
He knew that Kiara was someone who valued her space, especially when she was emotional, but he took a chance and turned toward her and pulled her into his lap. She let him, wrapping her arms around his torso and burying her face in his neck.
“I’m sorry. But shit, you saved my life, Kiara. I literally owe you my life. I wish I could tell you that you’ll never have to do it again, but who knows. All the shit we get ourselves into… Maybe you will have to save my ass again someday, because if anyone ever threatens you like that, you’re damn right I’m gonna take the hit for you. Every time.”
She tightened her arms around him, and her voice was thick with emotion when she spoke. “That’s not fair.”
“Of course it is. And anyway, you could have died too. Jumping in the water like that, holding my sorry ass up. You should’ve dropped me, but you didn’t. So let’s just say we’re even, yea?”
“Not even close,” she said. He chuckled and pressed a kiss against her hair. They stayed like that for a moment, wrapped around each other as soft waves lapped at the shore. The moon and stars were incredibly bright, making the water sparkle. In that moment, JJ was incredibly happy he was alive.
Kiara lifted her face, her cheeks still slightly damp. JJ brushed the tear tracks away, the corner of his mouth tilted. Looking at her lips was a force of habit, one that she usually didn’t even acknowledge. But now was one of the few times where her eyes dropped to his lips too. His heart jumped to his throat, mind racing with possibilities. He let his hand rest against her cheek, cradling her head. She leaned into his palm and her eyes momentarily drifted closed. It would be so easy to lean in and kiss her now. He thought that she might let him.
But he wanted too long, and Kiara was pulling away. “I think I’m ready to sleep now.”
He nodded in agreement, standing first so he could help her up. They walked back to the group and laid down in their spots, side by side. He wanted to reach out to her, to take her hand in his, to close the distance between them and sleep with her in his arms. He didn’t, but for the first time, he had hope in his heart that maybe someday he would.
+1.
JJ had never seen anything like it. Even the nicest hotels in OBX were nothing compared to the one he stood in now. The world was chaos - Big John was alive, Carla Limbrey was kind of on their side, and the chase for Denmark Tanney’s gold was as intense as ever. But right now, JJ Maybank was standing in the living room of a swanky hotel suite, bone tired and unable to do anything but stare at his surroundings.
Kiara came out of one of the bedrooms, hair wet and wearing clean clothes. Things had been different between them since the island. They stood closer together than before, and found themselves reaching out for one another’s touch. Even Kiara, who wasn’t necessarily the most affectionate person on earth, would lean her leg against his when they sat side by side. She would slide her fingers to his and grip his hand when he least expected it, acting like it was perfectly normal. Sleeping had become more difficult when he couldn’t hear her even breathing next to him, and he supposed it must have been mutual because she would find him lying somewhere and lay next to him, pressed up to his side.
She came over to stand next to him, and he draped his arm over her shoulders without thinking about it. Her arm slipped around his wait and she rested her cheek against his arm. Somewhere down below them, there was live music playing and it floated up through the open window, just loud enough to be heard.
“Y’know what?” JJ said with a sly grin. “We haven’t danced in a while.”
“We’ve been a little busy,” she replied.
He pulled away from her, keeping hold of her hand and when he had leaned back as far as he could, he tugged her toward him and twirled her under his arm. The sound of her laugh electrified him, and gave him a thrill that he had yet to find anywhere else. He dropped his hands to her waist at the same time her arms came around her neck. They swayed together slowly, not quite in time with the music but not caring.
“I don’t think this is how we usually dance.”
“S’not so bad though.”
She smiled and lifted one of her hands to slip her fingers through his hair. He closed his eyes at the feeling of her nails scraping along his scalp, and stepped even closer into her space. He rested his forehead against hers and they continued to dance in the late afternoon sun. Funny, how they always seemed to end up like this.
At some point the song changed, and voices from the people on the street mixed in with it so that none of it was discernible. Not that it mattered. The world had fallen away so that it was just the two of them, alive and alone and together.
“JJ.”
His eyes cracked open at the sound of his name, spoken in her perfect voice. She didn’t say anything more, just let her eyes drift over his face like she was memorizing him. When her eyes landed on his mouth, he was sure he stopped breathing. Her hand curved over his jaw, thumb rubbing over the light stubble there. Before he had a chance to consider what was happening, she had tilted her chin up and grazed her lips over his. Experience had trained him to the point that he responded intuitively, but it wasn’t until after she had pulled away that his brain was able to compute what happened. She stayed in his space, her eyes half closed as their breaths mixed together.
JJ’s mind was an absolute tangle of thoughts. He felt frozen. “Kie?”
“You really gonna leave me hanging?” she whispered. His lips were back on hers in an instant, pulling her bottom lip between his and touching it with just the tip of his tongue. He held her body hard against his, and he felt like all the unrequited feelings that had been building up for years were guiding his hands and his mouth. She answered him with equal fervor, fisting his shirt in her hands and biting down on his lips. It must have been a dream, or maybe he was dead. But when he broke away from her, panting, and opened his eyes, there she was. Looking every bit as caught up in him as he was in her.
“Is this something I’m allowed to do now?” he asked her. She pressed her smile against his lips in a sweet peck.
“Yea, I think I’m gonna need you to.”
“Oh thank fuck,” he breathed, kissing her again. There was no explanation for what was happening. He was kissing his best friend. His best friend, who he’d been in love with as long as he could remember. The smartest, most passionate, beautiful girl he’d ever known, who had turned down the two best guys he knew. And she was letting him angle her head just so, making soft noises when he kissed her deeper, her hands burning through his clothes no matter where she touched him.
JJ Maybank might have been the latest in a long line of good for nothing, going nowhere salt lifers. He was reckless and couldn’t make a good decision to save his life. It was completely unreasonable that a girl like Kiara Carrera would ever love him back. It was a miracle she was his friend, and every day he felt lucky for it. His love for her was a closed door, locked and leaving him wondering what could be happening on the other side.
Kiara Carrera had just handed JJ Maybank the key.

JJ Maybank Must Die | Chapter 2: Ping Pong Balls
fuckboy!JJ x Reader
series masterlist | chapter one
JJ Maybank is the island’s most infamous fuckboy- not that you ever cared. But when a group of tourist girls come to your surf shop crying to you about him, you agree to help them plot revenge. Sabotage is all fun and games, until you find that the playboy you were sworn to ruin happens to be falling head over heels for you.
Yes, this is based on John Tucker Must Die lol
Tumblr media
Problem not solved.
You and Sophia eagerly sipped on your smoothies, waiting for the trio to show up to their five-o’clock session the Monday following the party. Alas, they piled through the front door with deflated shoulders.
“Well?” Sophia perked, eyes gleaming, “How’d it go? Did you make him cry?! Please don’t spare any details!” Her palms clasped together in front of her like a kid who just came up with an evil-genius plan.
“Tell them what happened,” Annalise ordered Arabella, clocking the fiery-haired girl’s shoulder.
Arabella sighed dejectedly. “Well... not exactly. So I went to the party, hoe clothes on and everything like we planned. Saw him, used my signature look and look away move, and it worked! He came over and we started talking and-”
“She fucked him,” Maia finished bluntly, prompting a betrayed gasp from Sophia and face-palm from you.
“Mhm,” Annalise added, “He whisked her away before me or Maia could get the chance to interfere.”
“I couldn’t help it!” Arabella cried, covering her face in mortification, “He was just so... smooth and sweet. And those eyes! We started talking about sea turtles! You guys know they are my weakness.”
You couldn’t help look on your face. Arabella was sweet, no doubt, but boy, the girl sure was spineless. It was a good thing she was pretty.
“He is the devil!” Sophia enunciated each word of her sentence and huffed. “This is going to be harder than I thought!”
“We just need someone stronger! Someone with a heart of steel unlike this one,” Annalise added, smacking her friend on the back.
“We could give it another go,” you agreed, “but who’d be our guinea pig now?”
You pondered at the ceiling until you felt all four pairs of eyes practically stab at you. It was like jumping into a vulture’s nest.
“Oh no, not me!”
“Why not?” Maia questioned, frustrated. “You’re the only available one left. Plus, you couldn’t give two shits about him. It’ll be like busy work to you.”
“Yeah not gonna happen. Find someone else, please. This is non-negotiable.”
Out of nowhere, Sophia seized your hand and tugged you into the back room of the shop. “Excuse us for a minute,” she said to the girls before shutting the door of the crammed space.
It was a good thing your supervisor left early for the day, your asses would be toast if he were to witness the scene.
“I think you should do it,” your best friend urged.
“Have you lost your mind?!” you yelled-whispered.
“Oh come on, y/n! Do it for me. For Annalise. No! Do it for all the girls on this island who has ever shed a single tear for him!”
You sighed heavily. “I can’t do it, Soph. I’m sorry. He’s terrible and Karma has her kiss for him, but not me. Also, you know how I feel about those parties at the Boneyard.” Your look grew to one of disgust.
“Mhm,” she crossed her arms, “This wouldn’t be because of Pope would it?”
“No!”
Yes. It absolutely was.
So you might’ve maybe use to have a teensy tiny little crush on Pope Heyward-one of JJ’s best friends. It wasn’t your fault he was so cute and smart... and respectful!
The boy stole your heart and ran away with it when you were paired up for science lab sophomore year. Him, being the genius he was, always did the experiments so gracefully while you royalty fucked everything up.
One day, you poured the wrong solution into the beaker and the goopy liquid exploded everywhere. However, without an ounce of complaint, Pope offered to stay after with you to scrub down the walls and tables. A modern day romance if there ever was one.
After months of daydreaming about him, you finally worked up the courage to ask him to the end-of-year dance. Sophia and your other friends hyped you up as you approached his locker after school.
Much to you dismay, he said no. But he did it in such a nice way, you couldn’t hate him for it. If anything, it made you hurt even more that you got rejected so kindly. Ever since then, you never stepped foot near him or his friends, too humiliated to even think of it.
“You’re a terrible liar, y/n,” Sophia stated.
She then grabbed onto your shoulders to stare you straight in the eyes. “Look, I know you swore never to see Pope again, but, honestly, fuck him! He missed out on a kick-ass date. But think- you could kill two birds with one stone! Go to the Boneyard, look hot as fuck, dance on JJ a bit and then vamoose! Pope’s jealous and JJ gets a bite in the ass!”
Your brows furrowed in annoyance. Leave it to Sophia to convince you into her petty ploys. “I don’t know...”
She persisted further. “Okay, I wasn’t going to tell you this because I knew you’d be super jealous, but my cousin got me front row to Venus Panic in Charlotte at the end of the summer.”
Your eyes jolted out of your head. “No fucking way!”
You loved Venus Panic with a dying passion. They were your favorite band who never ever came to the U.S.
Sophia let out a long breath. “Yes. If you do this, y/n, the ticket,” she paused, “the ticket is yours.”
It was like pulling teeth from her to make that kind of offer. Damn her for being so conniving!
“Alright. For Venus, I’ll do it.”
“Thank the gods!” Sophia leaped up and down in the confined room, hugging you and thanking you a ga-zillion times.
She looked as if she sealed a million dollar deal when you two emerged from the room. You, on the other hand, were ready to fling yourself to the seagulls.
“Operation JJ Maybank must die is a go girls!” she announced before the group started frolicking up and down, earning stares from people looking through the glass.
“Alright, alright,” you said as they settled down, “Now that we have that done, can we please actually surf now?”
-------------------------------
The night of the next Boneyard party, you and Sophia drove to the condo the girls were staying at. Pulling up to the building, both yours and Sophia’s eyes widened. You knew the complex was on Figure Eight, but you didn’t know it was that luxurious and huge. They even had valet at the front, and you were greeted by doorman on your way in.
Apparently Annalise’s dad was an important rich man in Virginia. He remarried, and was currently honeymooning in some exotic island. Sending his condolences, he let her choose whichever one of his condos she wanted to stay at for the summer with friends. For some unknown reason, she chose the Outer Banks.
“Party’s here!” Sophia sang when Arabella answered the door.
You entered into the spacious unit, in awe. The endless kitchen was lined with white Italian wood while the counters were topped with the fanciest marble you had ever seen. The living room was the size of your house with floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the island. And the view was spectacular.
So this was how the other side lived.
Maia and Annalise squealed when they emerged from their rooms and hugged you and Sophia hello. They had on silk robes with their hair up in rollers. The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show had nothing on them.
They handed you two some seltzers from the fridge before Maia dragged you to the gigantic vanity in her room. Eyeshadow palettes, brushes, and compact powders littered the surface. She sat you down and fiddled with the ends of your hair.
“So, y/n, what kind of look do you wanna go for tonight?”
You were taken aback. “I’m not sure. Maybe something natural since we’re gonna be outside?”
Maia scoffed playfully and shook her head. “Y/n, it’s a party! If you’re not glamming you’re not scamming. Actually say no more! I know exactly what we’re gonna do.”
And so, she worked her magic as you watched through the bulb-lined mirror. You asked her about the products she was using while she gave you the rundown of the importance of each item and step. She was very knowledgable and swift with her hand- especially when it came to the winged liner.
You got along with Maia. You learned that she had a successful makeup channel and wanted to start her own brand one day. She also told you about her boyfriend and how he was in Thailand for the entire summer.
After two hours of searching for lost lip glosses, waiting on Annalise to change for the tenth time, and chugging your fifth seltzer, the five of you finally made it to the Boneyard at its peak hour.
Linking arms, you all strutted down the beach, ready for your mission.
The four scattered when you reached the sea of people, leaving you to locate the blonde target. After a few minutes of searching, you couldn’t find a single trace of him or any of his friends.
Heading over to the keg, you poured yourself a drink in hopes it would loosen your raging nerves. It also didn’t help that Maia’s bikini top was hardly covering your nipples. You knew a nip slip was just waiting to happen at some point in the night.
You casually sipped your drink and circled the party again, catching a glimpse of the wavy-haired boy at the beer pong area.
JJ slammed his fists on the table after landing another shot.
“Fuck yes! One last shot and your ass is grass!” he belted to his competitors: two random tourist boys who were chugging at a ridiculously slow pace. JJ then proceeded to high-five his friend, John B, who you also recognize from school.
“Don’t be a coward,” you muttered to yourself before striding to the crowd clamoring around a fold-out table.
From the sides, you attempted a few of the “flirty glances” Arabella taught you but no luck. The boy would much rather bounce a ping-pong ball.
You resorted to crossing your arms and waiting for the game to be over. With no surprise, JJ and John B won as the tourons groaned and withered away to the bonfire.
“That’s right baby! Undefeated!” JJ gloated with his hands smugly flung in the air.
“Alright who’s next?” John B shouted, earning no response from the herd.
Welp... it’s now or never.
“I’ll play,” you volunteered and stuck your hand up. You could feel JJ staring at you quizzically.
“Alright, alright we have a challenger! But who’s your partner?” John B asked. You wanted to slap yourself for not thinking this through properly.
“I’ll do it,” a deep voice spoke behind you. You whirled around to meet eyes with none other than Pope. He stood cooly behind you with a beer in hand.
You originally planned to avoid him at all costs during the party. But that all went down the drain as he set down his drink and started ordering the cups in a pyramid formation.
“You’re going down Heyward!” JJ hollered, taking the first shot. The ball glided into the first cup with ease. John B’s shot followed, but bounced off to the side.
Your partner grabbed the beer and hurled it down instantly, using his wrist to wipe his mouth. You snatched the fallen ball on the ground while Pope nodded for you to go first.
So this might have been the first time you’ve every played beer pong in your life. But, in your defense, you’ve done it a million times on your phone. It couldn’t be that hard.
You tossed the first shot and it wheezed over all the cups. Whoops.
“This is too easy,” JJ jeered, eyeing Pope as he made the next throw. It landed in one of the back cups and John B swallowed the contents down.
“Sorry, I’m just off my game today,” you mumbled to your partner.
“Nah, don’t worry about it. You wanna know my trick?” Pope raised as another one of JJ’s balls flew into one of your cups. You raised your brows as he handed you the beer.
“The more drunk you are, the better you play.”
Guzzling down the liquid luck, you fingered another ball and took your aim. Flinging it towards the mass, you gasped when it actually landed into the center cup.
“Oh my God!” you cheered as Pope’s face mimicked yours. He high-fived you with both hands as you bounced up and down in glee.
“That’s what I’m talking about y/n!”
For the rest of the game you and Pope played neck-and-neck with the other two, continuously making shots and chugging down beer. His tactic worked. You were on fire.
The flock around you chanted your name every time you scored. You could see your friends hanging around in the far corner hollering your name and sending you thumbs ups.
It was game point as both teams had one target left. It was their turn. JJ took the stage, chucking the ball skillfully. Much to your demise, it swirled along the rim before plopping in. JJ roared out in victory.
“Hold your horses,” Pope interjected with a finger in the air, “We still have redemption.”
“Let’s see it then,” John B panted, worn out from the tension.
“You got this.” Pope patted you on the back and handed you the ball.
Your eyes bursted. “W-What? No no no, Pope you go.”
“Relax, y/n! I believe in you. Just focus.”
You gulped and turned to the boys taunting you across the table. Saying the quickest Hail Mary in your head, you launched the ball and had to shut your eyes.
A sudden rush of shrieks alarmed you. Peeling your eyes open, you saw both JJ and John B’s jaws plummet to the ground.
It went in.
“Now that’s what the fuck is up!” Pope hurled his fist at this chest. You were frozen in utter disbelief. Maybe the Gods were in your favor.
Pope added two more cups to your side of the table as John B copied his actions. The four of you went at it a few more times before you were one-and-one again. Both John B and JJ missed and the balls rolled back over to you.
Taking the first shot again, you slung the ball, but it flew off the rim. You were chattering on your nails as Pope proceeded to make his attempt.
One swish and the ball landed straight in the hole.
You both jolted up in the air, doing a little victory dance. JJ shushed you- ready to go for his redemption kill. His ball missed the cup by a hair and John B’s slid off the table, deeming you and Pope the winners.
In your exhilarated drunken state, you threw your arms around Pope, and he let out a soft chuckle. You hastily pulled away after you realized what you were doing. Thankfully, the crestfallen losers immediately came over to shake your hands and say “Good game.”
JJ’s hands hung onto yours a moment longer. He studied you with his eyes before treading away towards the bonfire.
As winners, you and Pope stayed a few more rounds before getting beat out. You noticed JJ come back to watch you for a few rounds, eyes fixated on your every move.
After shaking hands with the girls who beat you, you waved a confused Pope goodbye and jogged over towards the drink area for water. In the corner of your eye, you saw JJ hurry up to you with giddiness.
“That was some game you played out there,” he complimented as you swigged down your water.
“Thanks! Guess I just got lucky back there.”
He leaned both arms on the table, raising his brows suggestively. “Might just be your lucky night then.”
Oh brother.
You threw him an uneasy smile and treaded away to the dancing crowd. Of course, he followed you, struggling to keep up with your pace.
“Hey, what’s your name? I’ve never seen you around before.”
You scoffed low enough to where he couldn’t hear. Never seen you? You’ve been in the same classes since second grade.
“I’m y/n.” You slowed down a bit, remembering your sworn duty.
“Well I’m JJ. JJ Maybank.” He flashed you a toothy smile.
You stopped amidst the dancers as a popular, high-beat electronic song came on. You flung you hands around JJ’s neck and pulled him close. “Dance with me, JJ Maybank.”
The two of you rocked back and forth for a while before the music transitioned to a provocative rap song. Both you and the light-haired boy rapped the entire first verse with ease, giggling once the chorus hit.
“So... how come I’ve never seen you at one of these parties?”
You shrugged tossing him a look of disinterest. “Not really my thing.”
He tugged you in so his forehead was on yours. “Then what is your thing then, hm? What’s a cute girl like you up to all summer?”
“I’m a surfing instructor.”
“Is that so? You know, I’m a pretty good surfer myself...” His hands traced down to your swaying hips.
“I’ll be the judge of that,” you retorted, running your hands up and down his biceps flirtatiously.
It was probably the alcohol doing all the work, because in that moment, you knew you were being absolutely irresistible to the boy who’s hands were burning to stay in the... respectful areas.
“Maybe one day I can show you,” JJ rasped. You barely heard him through the booming of the speakers, but still locked eyes with him alluringly.
“Mmm, don’t really have time for amateurs.”
“Ouch... feisty aren’t we?” His lips were millimeters from yours.
“Please, you know you like it.” You decided to close the gap.
Boy, were his lips soft. His chiseled hands made way to tangle up in your hair as he expertly kissed you amongst the throng of people. He slid his tongue into your mouth, and you could feel how hungry he was.
You stopped after a minute, purposely cutting it short. His eyes were aching for more, but you refused. You wanted to starve him.
“Wanna get out of here? There’s a cool place on the beach I can show you,” he asked, fingers toying with the back string of your bikini.
You shrugged. “Why not.”
Smirking, JJ’s hand snaked around your waist as he led you to the back trees of the Boneyard. You approached a small patch of sand enclosed by a circle of trees, and it all clicked in your head. This was his sex hideout.
You glanced around the spot. The moon beamed straight into it, and the leaves of the trees hung down fancifully. In its own weird way, it was kind of romantic- if you didn’t think about how many times he’s taken people there to fuck.
He tugged you towards the center, wrapping you in his muscular arms.
“You’re the cutest girl I’ve ever seen. I could just eat you up,” he muttered seductively, nipping at the sides of your jawline.
You were beginning to understand it now- his irresistibility. The guy was charming. You let him kiss you for a little bit until you felt him undo your back bikini string.
You quickly jerked away, tying it back into a bow.
“You know what, I think I’m good,” you said abruptly, backing away.
JJ looked as if someone offered a kid ice cream and knocked the cone off the second he was about to dive in for the first taste. “Wait! Where are you going?” he urged.
“Away.”
His face flooded in disbelief as he let out a loud scoff, darting after you as you jogged back to the dancing pack.
“Wait! Y/n come back!” he called out.
“What for? I’m not sleeping with you JJ!” you shouted, making sure everyone around you heard.
When his face went beet-red you knew you work was done.
You sped up the sand, out of sight, to Annalise’s car where your friends were circled. They whooped and cheered at your presence.
“We saw everything!” Maia exclaimed, hauling you in for a bone-tight hug.
“That was so awesome! Y/n, you’re my hero!” Arabella chimed in while you all crammed into the Mercedes.
“Ladies, ladies,” Annalise began before pulling out of the parking lot, “Tonight we celebrate the fall of JJ Maybank!”
The car erupted in drunk glee as everyone swaddled you from their seats.
As you drove back to the condo, Sophia rolled down her window from the backseat and stuck out her head.
“Fuck you JJ Maybank!”

akdsfjkdksj I wasn’t expecting you to churn all this content out so quick (´∀`)♡ omgosh you went above and beyond with the love language ask!! I love to see your interpretation of these characters so what do the cast consider the perfect date to be? low key vs high key? local vs out of town? -😌✨
Thank you! I’m glad you liked the love language post, sorry it took so long lol. As for their favorite dates I think I’ll do the same characters here:
Katsuki Bakugou
Rock Climbing/Hiking Dates
Tumblr media
Canonically one of Katsuki’s favorite things to do is go rock climbing so he’d definitely want to bring a SO along every so often. If you’re an athletic person and enjoy being outdoors this will be a very fun date! If you’re not a very athletic person (as many of us aren’t) Katsuki will settle for just going for a short hike along a trail. Katsuki gets super talkative on hikes as well, as you’re walking he’ll just be talking about literally anything! From Hero work to his friends/family, to things that have been bothering him lately. Whatever is on his mind he’ll share with you while you’re both out, which is incredibly helpful as he doesn’t ever discuss his feelings at any other point in time. Plus it gives him a chance to show off how fit he is in front of you, which you both always consider a plus.
Izuku Midoriya
Movie Dates
Tumblr media
A Classic, perhaps a little plain even, but Izuku absolutely loves to take you to the movies. He loves everything about the date, from discussing what you’re about to watch, to getting the snacks, to whispering in the back row (if you’re the type to get annoyed by talking during a movie he’ll keep this to a bare minimum). He loves being able to snuggle up next to you and hold your hand while discussing the finer points of the plot (If you’ll tolerate talking of course). Don’t think he’s being innocent here though, he definitely uses the darkness surrounding you as cover as he runs his hands up your thighs. Unbeknownst to most, Izuku is actually very much a horndog. He conceals it very well but he’s only barely capable of keeping his hands to himself when it comes to his SO. Any chance he gets to touch you he’ll take it, more than likely this is why his second favorite type of date is usually a stay-in date...
Shoto Todoroki
Dinner Dates
Tumblr media
Another Classic, Shoto loves to treat his SO to expensive treats with his favorite being food-related dates at lavish restaurants. Not a week goes by that he doesn’t take you out on the town for the night at some place you’re sure you couldn’t even afford a glass of water at. It’s almost never the same place twice either, Shoto is actually a foodie and enjoys trying new types of cuisine whenever he can. He’s got a whole list of places he wants to take you, and if they require reservations he’s already got them locked down. If you love eating Shoto is your man, he’ll make sure you’re set with a wide variety of foods to choose from and always remembers any place you happen to be partial to.
Denki Kaminari
Amusement/Water Park Dates
Tumblr media
Denki is a fun-loving guy through and through, he knows how to have a good time and wherever you happen to go he makes sure you do too. That being said, his absolute favorite place to take you is to an amusement or water park. It’s not often you two get to go, as you’re both very busy with your respective hero work most days, but when you do it’s a day-long affair. You’re there from the minute the park opens to the second it shuts down, riding as many rides as you can manage, eating greasy garbage food, and making sure to strike the dumbest poses for any rides that take pictures. You’ve got a whole scrapbook of these photos by now, their ridiculousness increasing with each new one added.
Eijirou Kirishima
Beach Dates
Tumblr media
You wouldn’t expect Eijirou Kirishima to be a Thalassophile (Def. Person who loves the ocean) but he is. He adores being on the beach and it’s his preferred location for a date. You’ve spent many a sunny afternoon seaside with Eijirou, building sandcastles, chasing crabs, and just enjoying the ocean. One memorable afternoon you found yourselves right next to a sea turtles nest and you got to watch the babies pop out of the sand and scurry towards the ocean, assisted by Eijirou as he chased off the seagulls looking to make them a meal. Eijirou also enjoys surfing, and if you know how to do so he’ll get you matching boards so you can ride the waves together. If you’re not partial to surfing he’ll be sure to pull out all his tricks while you watch him, he’ll even let you onto his board with him so you two can just float together by the shore. Of course you two can’t go to the beach year round, but when you can you’re both sure to make the most of these sunny days, even if he does get an awful sunburn by the end of it.
Hitoshi Shinsou
Gaming Dates
Tumblr media
Hitoshi isn’t what one would call ‘social’ when given the choice between going out for a night and staying home he’ll almost always choose the latter. So it’s expected that his favorite type of date is one where you two can stay inside and enjoy each others company. You both work so hard as Heros, why not spend your days off relaxing with one another? He can spend hours alone with you, preferably kicking your ass at Mario Party or some other multiplayer game. He doesn’t need anything except you, his consoles, and a pile of your favorite snacks to have a good time. That being said, if you want him to go out for a date the best way to convince him is to take him to some kind of arcade, especially if it’s a VR arcade. He feels a kind of nostalgic joy for these places and won’t hesitate to return and feel like a kid again. Plus it’s always nice to repeatedly prove to you that yes he is the champion of Dance Dance Revolution and you will never usurp this title from him.
Tamaki Amajiki
Park/Picnic Dates
Tumblr media
As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, Tamaki loves spending time outdoors; surrounded by and in awe of nature and it’s complex inner workings. He enjoys just taking time to appreciate the world around him, so dates where you can both relax outside and enjoy each other’s company are his favorite kind. He has a specific hill at his favorite park he likes to take you, bringing a lunch of all your favorite foods he sets you both up under the biggest shade tree for an afternoon. You both lay back on your worn picnic blanket and just cloudgaze, talking for hours about anything and everything. Much like Bakugou, Tamaki gets very talkative on these dates, discussing his week with you and anything new he might have learned over the course of it. He’s so very endearing on these dates its easy to fall silent and just listen to him for hours.
Mirio Togata
Crafting Dates
Tumblr media
Mirio likes to have memorabilia from your dates, so you can expect a lot of dates to center around making things. More than just your average painting classes Mirio has also taken you to sculpting, woodworking, and glass blowing classes to name a few. At the end of your dates you both exchange what you’ve made and Mirio absolutely adores anything you craft, regardless of its quality in your eyes. He puts his heart and soul into making you something and more often than not it turns out spectacularly. Mirio wasn’t as good with the ceramics class, but you love the warped vase he made (even if it was technically supposed to be a cup at the start, we’ve all been there). Mirio’s kept everything you made him and even has a shelf in his house just dedicated to what you’ve made, it makes him so happy to come home after a hard day of work and see physical memories of his time with you.
Keigo Takami
Aquarium/Zoo Dates
Tumblr media
Underneath Keigo’s charming and charismatically upbeat personality lies a bitter and broken man, drained by his role in Hero Society and left an empty shell of his former self. Underneath that personality lies a kid who never got to have a proper childhood and desperately wants to make up for it. He now uses his dates with you to do just that; not that you mind of course, dates with Keigo are always fun and lighthearted and you love to see him truly enjoy himself for once. Keigo’s favorite places to go are definitely large and intricately designed Zoos and Aquariums. He loves to look at the painstakingly accurate and detailed natural habitats, make fun of the stranger animal names you find, and learn new information about foreign bird species. Loves to mimic their calls too, much to the irritation of the birds and the zoo employees. He makes it a point to always get you a stuffed animal at the end of the date, ensuring that you now have a massive collection of them sitting all around your room. You’re always kept up to date on any Zoo or Aquarium events thanks to Keigo, as he has a calendar dedicated to all the unique events they have going on throughout the year.
Touya Todoroki
Crash Dates
Tumblr media
Dabi is...well he’s unpredictable at the best of times and it’s very rare that you two have time for anything even resembling a date (being an S class villain does make it hard to exist normally in society and do normal couple things but it ees what it ees). However, when he can take you one a date --well the term “date” is generous here- it’s never a dull one. You’re not sure how he does it but when you go out you always manage to end up somewhere Dabi could never get into naturally. From sold-out concerts, to stand up shows, to parties at lavish houses belonging to people you’ve never even heard of let alone met before; dates with Dabi are always somewhere you two definitely shouldn’t be. One memorable morning he took you to a country club where you got to each fancy exclusive rich people food and play a horrible facsimile of golf before you were eventually found and chased out. It’s always fun to see how long you two can crash an even before being found out.
Tomura Shigaraki
Cemetery/Haunted Places Dates

Tomura Shigaraki is a man who enjoys his space from other people, in his opinion the only good person is a dead one (unless he’s talking about you, of course). So it’s not abnormal for your dates to be in a place far away from others. Again the term “date” is being very generous, more often than not he’ll approach you, tell you to follow him, and you’ll wind up in some abandoned building or graveyard. Normally this would be cause for concern, as this is exactly what happens in horror movies before someone gets killed, but Tomura has a soft spot for you so your safety is ensured. Tomura loves to see a place reclaimed by nature, vines growing over a run down house or worn out gravestones breaking apart into chunks of marble with barely legible words on them. He doesn’t talk much on your dates, but will often give you a random bit of insight about him; like on one date where you both walked alongside abandoned train tracks at dusk and he told you about the dog he had as a child. He seeks no pity from you, and these dates are not the conventionally romantic type, but you enjoy being able to be with Tomura in a way no one else ever has or ever will.

Soul Surfer 5
Tumblr media
AN: shits gonna hit the fan..i’m sorry in advance. also, if this doesn’t do well, i’m contemplating taking a break from Soul Surfer or at least putting it on hold for a bit
The night of Friday’s Boneyard party was supposed to be great. It was supposed to go off without a hitch. But that was the opposite of what happened.
Violet was supposed to spend more time with JJ and actually see if the two could work. However, Violet learned that nothing was ever that easy in the Outer Banks.
__
Violet was at home, getting herself ready for the Boneyard party, when her balcony door opened.
“Knock, knock.” JJ appeared. “You could have used the front door you know.” Violet told the blonde. “Hey, you’re the one who said your balcony door was always open.” JJ rebutted, sitting on her bed.
“Well, since you’re here, how do I look? Sarah and Kie have differing opinions.” Violet asked.
The girl did a small spin in front of him, putting her outfit on full display. “You look stunning.” He commented. Violet gave him a bashful smile before looking back at her reflection.
“Come on, pretty girl. We have a party to get to.” JJ told the brunette as he pulled her away from the mirror.
__
It was just like any other summer night at the Boneyard. Violet and Kiara were sitting on a log by the fire, talking about a new fundraiser to save sea turtles. JJ on the other side of Violet, talking to John B and Pope.
Everything was fine until Rafe drunkenly stumbled upon the group of pogues.
“Well, well, well, if it isn’t my favorite new Pogue.” He slurred, eyes focused on Violet. “Jesus Christ,” the brunette muttered.
“Leave her alone, Rafe.” Sarah told her older brother. “No. No, see I don’t want to do that.” He said. “Seriously, Rafe. I don’t want to talk to you.” Violet interjected.
Rafe’s eyes went dark as she stumbled closer to Violet, causing her to stand up from her seat. JJ then followed suit and protectively stood in front of her.
“Aw, does JJ have a little crush on Violet?” Rafe mocked. “Go home, Rafe.” JJ started. “Or what? You aren’t the only one who likes the new girl, Maybank.” Rafe started.
“And I bet she’d pick me over you if we asked her. Why choose you when she could have everything she ever wanted? With me.” He added.
Before Violet could add her own comeback, given she was standing right there, JJ pushed Rafe on to the sand.
JJ was on top of Rafe, punching him as all he saw was red. “JJ stop!” Violet yelled.
Violet hated violence. She hated it more than most things because she didn’t think it solved anyone’s problems. It only made them worse.
Rafe soon gained the upper hand and began punching JJ’s face in. “Rafe, that’s enough man!” Topper yelled, pulling his friend off JJ. John B helped the other boy off the sand before he stormed off.
“JJ!” Kiara called after him, the rest of his friends following. “Dude, stop!” John B yelled. “JJ, stop walking away!” Violet added. “What do you want, Violet?” JJ snapped, turning around quickly to face her. Ignoring the throbbing pain of his injuries.
“What the hell was that? Rafe could have killed you!” She said. “Really? You’re gonna yell at me for defending you?” JJ snapped. “Yes because it’s not worth it, JJ!” Violet yelled.
JJ scoffed before spitting blood on the sand. “You know what? You’re right. You aren’t worth it. I knew you wouldn’t fit in with us. You’re not Pogue. You’re just a sad little rich girl with mommy issues.” He snapped back at her.
All anger disappeared from Violet’s face and was quickly replaced with sadness and disgust. “JJ are you kidding?” Kiara scolded him.
Violet’s vision grew blurry as she glared at the boy who used to have her complete adoration. JJ used her biggest secret and the one thing she was ashamed of the most, against her over something stupid he did.
“I hate you.” She whispered, a few tears falling from her eyes, before turning and walking away.
It wasn’t until those three words left Violet’s lips and met his ears, did the realization of what JJ said hit him.
Kiara looked at her friend in disappointment before speaking. “What the hell is wrong with you? Why would you say that to her?” She yelled, before following after Violet.
Violet quickly became one of her best friends and hearing what JJ said to her made her extremely angry.
“Seriously, JJ?” Pope questioned, following Kie. “What did I just do?” JJ muttered, wanting it to just be a bad dream.
“JJ, why did you say that to Violet? I thought you liked her.” John B asked. “I do like her! I-I don’t know. I was mad at Rafe and I took it out on her.” JJ answered. John B gave his friend a sympathetic look before he himself walked away, leaving his friend alone.
__
Violet woke up the morning after the Boneyard completely drained. Well, she didn’t consider it waking up when she never fell asleep.
She stayed up all night either crying or staring blankly at the ceiling. Every time she closed her eyes she could see and hear JJ say those awful things to her.
That she didn’t belong with the pogues, she wasn’t worth it, sad girl with mommy issues.
“Vi, honey, wake up.” Rob said from the other side of the door. “I’m up.” She groaned. “You know what they say cheers people up?” He asked.
Violet rolled her eyes before replying. “What?” She asked. “A couple boards and some choice waves.” He answered.
The brunette furrowed her eyebrows before she got out of bed and opened the bedroom door.
“You got that from Lilo and Stitch.” She said, looking up at him. “Yeah and it always cheers you up.” Rob replied.
Violet looked at her dad for a moment before she groaned. “Fine. Let’s go.” She said.
The father-daughter pair got their board and Rob drove them to the beach. Violet looked out the open window, the breeze calming her only for a few moments. Rob looked over at his daughter briefly, not wanting to bring up what made her so upset.
“Do you wanna talk about it?” He asked. “Not really. I’d rather not drive into the fact that the guy I liked used my ‘mommy issues’ against me.” She answered.
“Maybe there’s something else going on with him. Something that made him lash out.” Rob said.
Rob always taught his daughter to give people the benefit of the doubt. There could be other factors or circumstances to make people lash out.
They arrived at the beach, it being early enough no one else was there. It was a routine they had that they’d surf early morning so it was only them and the waves.
Violet had to give it up to her father. Surfing did take her out of her head for a while. It made her think of the time that JJ Maybank wasn’t the center of her mind. Before she fell so quickly for a boy she barely knew.
“Feel any better?” Rob asked his daughter as they walked on the sand. “I’m not saying you’re right.” She joked. “Even though you know I was.” He said. “Okay sure. You were right.” Violet told him.
Rob could see that his daughter was still stuck in her head. “What’s going on?” He asked. “I just miss home. I miss Oahu.” Violet answered. “I know, kiddo. But this is our home now. I know it’s going to be hard after what happened with JJ but Kiara is still your friend. She stopped by last night to make sure you were okay.” Rob replied.
Before Violet was going to reply, she spotted Kiara walking towards her. “I’ll meet you back at the car.” Rob told her.
“Hey, Vi.” Kiara greeted her. “Hi, Kie.” Violet said. “How are you doing? After what happened?” Kiara asked. “Honestly, not good.” Violet answered. “I know JJ’s sorry. When he gets like that he just gets angry and lashes out. But I know it’s not an excuse for how he talked to you. You don’t deserve that.” Kiara said. “I wish I could just forgive him but,” Violet started.
The two were interrupted by JJ calling out to Violet. “Violet,” He started. “No.” She muttered as she turned to walk away with her board.
“Violet, please listen to me.” JJ begged. “Just stay away from me.” Violet snapped before she turned and walked away from Kiara and JJ.
JJ watched her walk away beating himself up for how he royally messed up.

The Shark and the Surfer Chapter 2: The Aft-ermath
Archive of Our Own link
Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the Chlolix tags on AO3...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alix noticed it was getting dark, so she swam home as fast as she could and made it to her family’s undersea cave, where her father, Alim, was waiting for her.
“Alix, are you alright? Do you have any parasites on you?” Alim said as he swam around his daughter. He was part pilot fish, so he had a habit of worrying about his shark daughter (who took more after her great white birth mother) and making sure there weren’t any remoras mooching off her.
Alix groaned and pushed her father aside. “Daaaaaaad! I’m not a pup anymore!” She said a little more whiny than she intended. “I just ran into some traffic on my way home, that’s all. Can we eat now?”
Alim nodded and swam over to the dining room with Alix, where his other son, Jalil, was waiting at the table with the prepared food. Well, except for Alix’s plate. Alix took her squid raw.
So while Alix started digging into her squid, she talked about her day with her family, leaving out who she helped today. It was pretty standard stuff, like how Alim mentioned his archeology team at the museum had found evidence of a possible missing link between mermaids and their selkie ancestors or how Jalil had found some more human treasures like a stretchy torture device made of six rings one of his turtle friends gave him.
As Alix washed her squid down with the ink of another, she realized that her brother had some knowledge about humans. “Hey, Jalil? Dad? What exactly do you guys know about humans?” She asked, causing both of them to freeze in place.
“Wh-Why are you asking that? What happened?” Alim asked, worried his daughter’s curiosity (or appetite) would get the better of her.
“Nothing happened! I-I-I-I just wanted to… learn more about them, that’s all. What’s wrong with that?” Alix worried she had said too much.
Alim put a hand on Alix’s shoulder. “Alix, humans are too dangerous. We know nothing about them except that they come from beyond the sea.”
“Well, that, and they can’t live underwater, so they create huge masses of land just to invade our territory and steal our belongings. Thankfully, we got some of their own treasures they just threw away, like this magic box with some humans trapped inside” Jalil chimed in as he took out a blue rectangular object with the label “Canon” on the side.
“Maybe we just need to learn more about humans.” Alix suggested, earning a glare from her father.
“The surface world is inhospitable to our kind, and you could die if you went up there.” Alix flinched in response to Alim’s statement, as she remembered how hard it was for her to simply go a few feet on the surface away from the water. It made Alix wonder how she could ever learn more about the human she saved if she couldn’t get farther than the beach.
“Can I just… Can I go to my room? I want to be alone right now.” Alix mumbled.
“You may, just no thinking about humans.” Alim said as he watched Alix swim away to her room in the cave.
Alix laid down on her bed and thought about the day’s events. She didn’t really get to know the human, but she was still curious about her. Maybe she could try and see if the human was exploring the ocean tomorrow and possibly see her again. But what if that was too much? What if it was a trap? Alix really needed to talk to someone about this the next day.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chloe walked back to her place, still thinking about her broken surfboard and what could have saved her. She was really worried about how she would explain what happened to her family. They were already nervous about her hobby as a surfing influencer on social media, so finding out their daughter hit a rock and almost bled out at sea and then came back with a bite taken out of her surfboard would cause them to freak out and make sure she couldn’t even go for a dip in the kiddie pool at the resort they owned. Granted, Chloe’s parents always seemed to be busy with something these days, with her mother designing clothes in Paris like a bikini with glitter and her father running one of the most expensive beach resorts in Saint-Tropez, but Chloe was sure at least one of them would show concern for her safety.
Chloe snuck back into her room where her sister Zoe was hanging out. “Hey, you’re back late. What happened?” She asked, making Chloe sigh.
“Please don’t tell Mom and Dad, but I kind of had a little wipeout.” Chloe showed Zoe the seaweed wrapping around her wetsuit.
Zoe gasped in horror. “Oh my God, are you okay?” She pressed her hand against the seaweed-covered area, causing Chloe to wince a little.
“Y-Yeah, I’m fine. It was only a little bleeding, and it’s mostly stopped.” Chloe replied while unwrapping the seaweed, exposing a minor laceration against her side that thankfully wasn’t too deep and could easily be treated at home. She grumbled a little at seeing a tear in one of her favorite wetsuits.
“You need to let me treat that.” Zoe helped Chloe out of her wetsuit, ignoring her sister’s protests. There were times where it seemed like Zoe was more of a parent to Chloe despite them both being around the same age. She took Chloe to the private bathroom in their room and sat her down on the toilet before taking out a first aid kit.
Zoe got out a washcloth and ran it under some cold water. “So how did it happen this time?” She asked while Chloe let her sister clean the area around the wound.
“It’s hard to say. I remember scratching myself on a rock and bleeding a little bit, but then...”
“Then what?” Zoe asked, taking out some antiseptic cream to apply to the cut.
Chloe was at a loss for words for describing what happened next. “You’d think it’s weird.”
“Says the girl whose wound I’m currently cleaning while she sits on the toilet wearing nothing but a bikini.” Zoe retorted with an argument that Chloe didn’t really have a rebuttal towards.
Chloe figured she should just come out and say it, no matter how weird it sounded. “I think I was saved by a mermaid.” She blurted out.
Zoe stared at Chloe like she had a colony of bees in her hair. “A mermaid? Seriously?"
“That's what I saw!” Chloe protested. “I think she helped me get back to the shore and then I saw her jumping back into the water.”
Zoe scoffed in response as she took out the gauze and some bandages. “Oh, okay then. What kind of mermaid was it? Are we talking Ariel mermaid, Ponyo mermaid, or H2O: Just Add Water mermaid?” She asked sarcastically.
“Actually, I think she was a shark mermaid or something like that.” Chloe said, recalling the features of her mysterious savior.
“You were saved… by a shark mermaid?” Zoe asked incredulously.
“I don’t know! I want to learn more about her!” Chloe raised her arms for Zoe to apply the gauze to her wound and bandage it up. “Come on, don’t you want to at least see if this is real and not something I hallucinated?”
Zoe sighed. “Chloe, maybe take a day or two to rest before going back into the ocean again.” She started to put away the first aid kid. “Either that, or ask someone about mermaids or something like that.”
Chloe got up and changed into something comfortable for the night, thinking about maybe talking to a friend of hers tomorrow
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“YOU SAW A HUMAN?!”
“Shh! I don’t want the entire ocean to know!” Alix hissed to shut up Alya.
“Then why are you telling us in the first place? This is huge!” Alya couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
“And you saved her just like a prince saving a princess. It’s so romantic!” Rose chimed in with the same cheery view of everything she heard about.
“I didn’t mean it like that! She needed help, so I helped her.” Alix retorted. “I mean yeah, I guess she was kinda pretty, but that’s not the point here! I want some advice on how to approach this.”
“I mean, if you want to see her again, why not just drag her underwater?” Juleka asked bluntly.
“Juleka, she can’t breathe underwater!” Alix snapped.
“Why don’t you ask Master Fu? Maybe he knows.” Mylene suggested. “What does he know about humans, Marinette?” She asked her friend who was currently working as a healing apprentice for Master Fu.
“Uh, he hasn’t really told me much.” Marinette replied, making Alix sigh.
“And my family isn’t much help either.” She said as she ran her hands through her head in frustration. “I really don’t know what to do here! I really want to learn more about this human. I want to know more about the human world in general and their awful-tasting fish.” The others looked at Alix in confusion after they heard that last bit.
“Okay, here’s an idea: Swim up to the shore and then see if the human comes back or not. If she actually saw you, she’ll obviously want to investigate like you do.” Marinette suggested.
Alix thought about what Marinette said for a moment. “You know what? You’re right. Maybe she’s looking for me right now!” And with that, Alix dashed off, leaving a trail of bubbles in her wake as her friends tried to get her to stop.
Alix remembered where she went to the surface yesterday and swam to a small rock formation where she surfaced and looked up to see if the same human saw her, making sure to conceal her shark half just in case.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“You saw a mermaid?”
“Yeah, I get it’s ridiculous, utterly ridiculous. Can you just hear me out?” Chloe asked Sabrina, fully aware of how weird her question was.
“You know when I signed up to be a lifeguard, I wasn’t trained to look for mermaids.” Sabrina said as she got out of her lifeguard’s chair and switched out with another lifeguard so she could talk to Chloe more while the two walked down the beach.
“Well what about sharks? I think the mermaid was part shark.”
Sabrina sighed. “You of all people should know shark sightings are rare here, and even then, they rarely attack humans unless they’re confused.”
“Well I think this shark is different.” Chloe said, fully aware of how weird her statement was.
“I guess I’ll tell the other lifeguards to watch out for any shark people.” Sabrina said before leaving.
Chloe sighed. She knew this was a ridiculous story nobody would believe. She was going to walk back, but then she saw a flash of pink hair by the rocks. Chloe carefully walked across some of the rocks that weren’t submerged in the water until she was face to face with the pink haired girl, who was looking nervously at her.
“Uh… hi. Do you remember me?” The girl asked nervously, giving a toothy grin with her sharp teeth.
“I… I think I do. This is kind of a strange question, but are you a...” Chloe was going to ask, but her curiosity got the better of her and looked over the rocks and saw a shark fin on the girl’s back. “Nevermind.”
Chloe was now 100% sure she was saved by a mermaid yesterday, and was now face to face with the same mermaid again.

Traveling (Sarah Cameron X Reader Headcannons)
Tumblr media
Based off a conversation I had with my gf the other night
It was a spare of the moment thing, sitting on her bed and eating dry cereal straight from the box.
“We should go to Hawaii.” “We should.” “Lets go tomorrow.” “You cannot be for serious!”
She had a beach house there that you two stayed in
You had icecream and smoothies everyday
Running along the beach and throwing back all the starfish that had washed up on the beach
Seeing turtle and taking pictures of them
Putting sand and shells in glass bottles to bring to Kie
Flower crowns and tanning
You taught her how to surf on the famous hawaiian waves
Her falling off and “dying” fifteen times before getting the hang of it
You went snorkeling, seeing reefs and sharks
You two also went mountain tubing, giggling the whole time and recording on her go pro
You went paddle boarding together to see fireworks
“We should grab an avocado to bring back to JJ.” “We should grab a shark to bring back to JJ.”
You got him the next best thing,a shark tooth necklace
“You’d be a good traveling partner, where do you want to go next?”She asked you, laying down on the bed.You laughed, shrugging. “This is my first time outside of OBX,Sar.Im still getting used to things.”You reminded her.She nodded, resting her chin against her palm and thinking about it. “How about Italy?”She asked.
You got to try shaved ice for the first time and she got your reaction on video
You two took a tour of the eco system, admiring the tall trees and flowers
You and her met native hawaiians, learning about their culture
Laying on the bach and just staring out at the water, enjoying the feeling of the sun on your skin and her hand holding your
Finding a message in a bottle and finding out it was a love letter
“It says for us to write our own and then throw it back.Should we do it?”She asked, reading the last line on the aged paper. You nodded eagerly, grabbing a pen and notepad. “Its like old chain mail.”You grinned.
So you two wrote your letter and put a polaroid of the two of you into it along with your snap chat’s in case someone found it
The best part of the whole trip was when she surprised you with mermaid lessons
She had been planning it since the two of you got there because she remembered that one of your favorite movies of all time was Aquamarine
You hugged her so hard after that, nearly squeezing out her brain
This one trip started your traveling adventures
She bought a photo album and decorated it with shells, chains and glitter
She put photos of the two of you and all of your travels, one adventure for every page
You two made it your thing to wear the same outfit at least once every where you went, she’d kiss your forehead and take a photo to put in the album
You two went back to OBX to bring JJ his avocado and shark necklace, giving Kie shells and sant and a new dress that was covered in palm trees
You got Pope a book about Hawaiian culture and sharks
You gave John.B a new bandana with a sea shell pattern
You had insisted in getting something for Rafe because maybe then he’d be less bitchy
You gave him a key chain and he got all giggly because he hadnt received a gift in years
Sarah looked so beautiful with her deep tan and new green leaf dress
The next place you two wanted to visit was Greece and you guys decided to bring Kiara along this time
“I feel bad for third wheeling.”Kiara grinned awkwardly. You shook your head, sitting up in your chair. “Its fine,Kie.We can bring JJ next time so he can fourth wheel.”

‘cause you’re amazing (just the way you are) jj + kie
request by @love-life-always: We never really hear anything about Kiara's kook year, so I was wondering if you could write a story where Kiara had an eating disorder during her kook year, while trying to fit in and stuff but she managed to recover when she became friends with the pogues again, but then for whatever reason it starts to affect her again and jj/the other pogues notice.
this turned into one big angsty mess real quick lol. but protective!jj is my kink, so... here you go lmao. thank you so much for the request, i hope you like it :)
read it here on ao3.
disclaimer: i understand that eating disorders are a serious/complex issue and am NOT trying to romanticize them in any way. and while i did some research before writing this, i am in no way an expert nor have i ever experienced something like this. so, if any part of this is inaccurate or ignorant i apologize. if this triggers you in anyway, please do what’s best for your mental/emotional health.
trigger warnings: eating disorders, panic attacks, brief mentions of abuse.
                                      •••
It was an unspoken rule among the Pogues that they didn’t talk about Kiara’s Kook Year.
It hadn’t always been that way. When Kiara had returned to the Chateau with a years worth of apologies and a case of Miller Lite, John B and Pope had forgiven her almost instantly, but not JJ. Weeks of veiled insults and sharp glares had followed, and despite John B and Pope’s efforts to sway him, JJ seemed determined to hate her forever.
But eventually, even he managed to forgive her for abandoning them. Kiara assumed that it was a combination of her constant presence, and the boobs and curves she’d developed during her Kook Year. She couldn’t really blame them for noticing, since they were horny teenage boys and she spent the majority of her time in a bikini.
So, things went back to normal, and the Pogues caught on to the fact that Kiara didn’t want to discuss her absence, or her exile from the Kook Academy. It was easier this way, she told herself. Talking about Sarah still hurt too much, and as for everything else... well, it wasn’t important.
So, she doesn’t talk about Sarah, about how they got drunk and watched movies and saved baby sea turtles together, how her heart aches when she thinks about her. She doesn’t talk about the girls at the Kook Academy who spread rumors behind her back, who shove her in the hallways and on one occasion dump a smoothie on her head in the cafeteria. She deletes the mean comments under her Instagram posts before the Pogues can see, because she doesn’t need them to defend her, and the last thing she wants is to explain why everyone hates her so much.
Because she just got her friends back, and Kiara isn’t going to burden them with her problems, not when they have it so much worse.
                                        •••
The words eating disorder cause a certain kind of alarm to go off in Kiara’s brain.
Because yes, there’d been those months at the Kook Academy where she’d gone from diet to diet, weighed herself after every meal, looked at the girls in her grade with their flat stomachs and thin, long legs and hated her curves and muscle-toned limbs. She’d followed all the trends— juice cleanses and swearing off anything over a hundred calories. She even stopped surfing, switched to running, wondering if it would make a difference.
Her mother’s comments hadn’t helped. Once Kiara was going to parties and sleepovers with Sarah, her mom started buying her clothes that were two sizes too small, handing her grapefruit halves in the morning when Kiara asked for eggs and bacon, shot pointed glares at the half-eaten box of cookies on her dresser.
So, she started just... not eating. It was almost too easy to do. All she had to do was say that she was running late for school and skipping breakfast, snack on celery sticks for lunch, tell her parents she had homework to avoid coming to dinner. And it had worked: she’d gotten thinner, and her mother smiled when she started wearing the clothes she’d bought her, so Kiara assumed it was fine.
It was a visit to her doctor that made Kiara realize that what she was doing to herself was wrong. There’d been no official diagnosis, just a few pointed questions about her daily food intake, a suggestion to incorporate more protein into her diet. But Kiara had read between the lines, and she’d gotten over it, moved on, recognized that what she was doing wasn’t how she wanted to live her life. And she hadn’t told anyone, especially not the Pogues, because it was her business and they didn’t need to know.
The problem is that sometimes Kiara forgets to catch herself.
Like when she spends a little too long looking at her stomach in the mirror, or when JJ offers her the rest of his fries at the Wreck and she wrinkles her nose and says too many carbs.
He frowns, presses a hand to her forehead, as if checking for a temperature. “Too many carbs? Who are you, and what have you done with Kiara Carrera?”
She laughs, shoves him away from her, goes to get another beer from the fridge, but JJ is still watching her when she gets back. “I didn’t know you cared about that sort of stuff.”
“What do you mean?” She asks, avoiding his gaze as she knocked John B’s feet off of the counter.
“Calories and shit,” he said with a shrug, and it was a perfectly reasonable remark, but Kiara didn’t like the direction their conversation was going in. “Is this something you picked up from the Kooks? You turning into one of those soccer moms who meal plan and don’t let her kids eat sugar?”
It hits a little too close to home, so Kiara snatches a fry from his basket and makes sure that he sees her eat it.
“There,” she said, chewing somewhat obnoxiously. “Happy now?”
JJ rolled his eyes, turned to listen to whatever Pope was saying about his internship, but Kiara couldn’t help but feel like she’d dodged a bullet.
JJ couldn’t find out. Not now, not ever.
                                       •••
Being forced to attend Midsummers is the last thing Kiara needs or wants, but her mother doesn’t care.
She thinks it’s how she copes. Kiara can hang with whoever she likes, as long as her mother can put her in a pretty dress and show her off to the Kooks.
The subtle, pointed comments start again.
Take it in a bit on the hem, Silvia. I’m not used to this, you know. I never had Kiara’s curves when I was younger.
I know that your friends don’t have to worry about this, Kiara, but you have a figure to maintain. Eating at the Wreck every night just isn’t going to fly.
Maybe a side salad instead, sweetheart. I’m paying the seamstress by the hour.
Kiara’s not proud of it, but she does go along with her mother, because she’s tired of fighting with her, and the idea of her daughter going to Midsummers with all the Sarah Cameron’s of the world has made her happier than Kiara has ever seen her.
She tells herself it’s only for a couple of weeks, that she can get through it, but it’s getting harder to ignore the comments, to resist the urge to weigh herself after a bag of popcorn or a sandwich from the Wreck.
Before, when she was friends with Sarah, it was easier to hide. Sarah didn’t really notice other people— it wasn’t her fault, just how she’d been raised.
The Pogues are different.
At first, they buy all the usual excuses. She’s not hungry, she already ate. But then John B asks her to split a burger with him at the Wreck, or Pope roasts her a s’more and she refuses, and they start to notice.
One time, Kiara buys a new kind of green tea ice cream from the grocery store, and she eats it all in one sitting, calories be damned.
JJ laughs, nudges John B. “Now that’s what I’m talking about. Damn, Kie.”
It’s a joke, a passing comment, but Kiara flinches, feels a sudden surge of regret. Shit. Her mother was going to kill her.
JJ sees it, because of course he does, and then his teasing grin disappears and he gives Pope and John B a knowing look.
Pope looks instantly uncomfortable as John B clears his throat, and Kiara doesn’t like it one bit. She feels cornered, suddenly on edge, as John B opens his mouth and says, “Kie, is everything okay? With you, I mean?”
“Of course,” she says, shrugging, the deflection easy. “Why wouldn’t it be?”
“Well, it’s just—“
“You’re not fucking eating.”
Kiara flinches for real this time at JJ’s harsh, blatant tone, her stomach hollowing out as John B hisses JJ’s name and says this isn’t what we talked about.
Oh, so they’re talking about her now. Wonderful.
“Fuck this,” she says, springing to her feet, the empty ice cream cartoon and metal spoon clattering to the floor. She feels sick just looking at it. “Y’all are— y’all are delusional, okay? I’m out.”
“Kie, it’s okay,” Pope says, his eyes on the floor. “Millions of people have, uh, stuff like this, you know, it’s not—“
“I do not have a eating disorder,” Kiara growls at him, ignoring Pope’s own flinch, how he curls in on himself at her words. “Your statistics don’t apply to me, okay, Pope? You have no idea what’s going on.”
“Kie, we’re just trying to help—“
“Fuck you, John B,” she says, turning to leave, not able to stand the pity on his face.
“No,” JJ snarls, rising from his chair, clutching the neck of his beer bottle so hard she thinks it might shatter. “I’ve had enough. Do you know that’s the most I’ve seen you eat in weeks? Something’s wrong, Kie, we’re not idiots, okay? So just tell us—“
“I don’t have to tell you shit, Maybank,” she snaps, the pit in her stomach filling itself with something cold and bitter. “This is my business, just like whatever the fuck is happening with your dad is yours. So leave me alone.”
She regrets the words as soon as she says them, but it’s too late, because JJ’s beer bottle shatters and John B yells as alcohol and shards of glass scatter across the floor, and Kiara is out the door before any of them can make her stay.
They’re just worried, she knows that, but it’s fine. She has it handled.
                                      •••
In reality, it’s the opposite of fine.
Kiara avoids the Pogues in the week leading up to Midsummers, ignores the texts they send her asking her to meet, actually hides when John B comes to find her at the Wreck.
She tells herself she just has to get through Midsummers, and then it’ll all work itself out.
The stress makes it worse, she thinks, and in between her anxiety over the Pogues and her mother’s pre-Midsummers prep, Kiara doesn’t realize that she can’t remember the last time she ate until she’s pulling up to the club with her parents.
It’s kind of like a wake up call, the shakiness in her limbs and the empty feeling in her stomach, and the next thing she knows, she’s hyperventilating over the sink in the girls bathroom.
It’s hard to breathe, and the heavily perfumed air definitely isn’t helping, and her mother is going to kill her, and Kiara doesn’t even know how it got this bad again. She doesn’t look too thin in the mirror, at least not to her, but what do other people see?
She’s not quite sure how, but she manages to find her phone in her clutch, to fumble through typing in her password and locating Pope’s contact.
He answers on the first ring.
“Kie? Is everything okay? Where are you?”
He’s obviously concerned, and she feels like such an idiot, because she spent the past week pushing him and everyone else away when all they wanted to do was help her.
“Bathroom,” she manages to say, fighting to speak past the tightness in her throat. “In— Inside. Pope, I can’t breathe, I can’t—“
“Okay, Kie, it’s okay,” he murmured, sounding surprisingly calm. “Fuck, I’m working, I can’t leave. But I’m gonna help you, okay? Just breathe. Give me one second—”
The call ended, and Kiara tried not to panic anymore than she already was, but it was a relief when Pope’s name appeared on her phone screen again.
“Pope?” She asks, his name more of a sob than anything.
“Yeah, it’s me. Listen, Kie, you’re gonna be fine. You’re not hurt, right?”
She shakes her head, then remembers that he can’t see her, and confirms that she’s fine (physically, at least) through the phone. Pope keeps doing that, asking her questions in a low, level voice, until she hears a knock on the bathroom door.
“Pope, is that you at the door?” She asks, clutching her phone tighter in her hand, any sense of control she’d managed to regain vanishing.
“No, it’s—“
“Kie? Kie, are you in there?“
She doesn’t know why, but the sound of JJ’s voice makes her crumble. She can still hear Pope talking to her through the phone, hear JJ on the other side of the door, but it’s like it’s all coming from very far away. Her breathing picks up again, and she barely registers JJ’s fuck it, I’m coming in.
His knock on the stall door jerks her back into reality. “Kie? It’s JJ, can you open the door?”
With shaking hands, she grapples with the lock, automatically shrinking away when light floods the stall and she sees JJ staring down at her.
She must look like a mess— sitting on the floor of the bathroom in her dress, mascara running, like some girl who just got dumped by her boyfriend at a party. But she can’t really bring herself to care about that, because she still can’t seem to get enough air into her lungs.
“JJ,” she whimpers, because he’s just standing there like he doesn’t know what to do, some raw emotion in his eyes she can’t bring herself to decipher right now.
“Hey, hey it’s okay,” JJ says, snapping out of whatever trance he’d fallen into at the sight of her, his movements slow as he crouches down beside her, his hands raised in mock surrender. “Take it easy, okay, Kie? Just breathe.”
He takes the phone from her, has a brief conversation with Pope, then hangs up and pockets it. Kiara doesn’t object, staring at her hands and trying to stop herself from shaking.
“Can I?” JJ asks, and she realizes he’s asking to hold her hands.
She nods, and then his warm, calloused fingers are brushing against her skin as he rubs soothing circles into the back of her palms. Her heart rate isn’t slowing, though, her breaths coming quick and fast again, but then JJ’s arms are around her and he’s pulling her back against his chest and murmuring reassurances into the top of her head.
He tells her to copy his breathing, and she does, focusing on the steady beat of his heart against her shoulder, the fact that his hands are still holding hers.
Eventually, her breathing returns to normal, and her anxiety is replaced by exhaustion. She sags against JJ, closes her eyes, relaxes into his warmth.
The next thing she remembers is JJ guiding her into the passenger seat of the van and bucking her seatbelt. It’s easy to trust him, to let her eyes slip closed and listen to the steady, familiar hum of the engine.
Kiara doesn’t ask where they’re going, and she must fall asleep at some point, because then she’s waking up in the driveway at the Chateau. She ignores JJ’s offered hand and stumbles out of the van, tugging off her heels the moment she gets inside and collapsing onto the pullout couch.
She doesn’t want to move ever again, content to fall asleep right there, exhaustion heavy in her bones, but JJ takes one look at her and pulls her to her feet. He takes her to the bathroom, turns the shower on and places a hand on her back to guide her inside. He asks if she wants him to stay. She says no, because JJ’s already looking at her like she’s a wounded animal, and she doesn’t want him to think that she can’t do anything by herself.
Even if she almost has another panic attack once he leaves, has to remind herself to breathe as she undresses and steps into the shower. The hot water helps, and she loses track of time standing in the spray. She never hears the door open, but when she gets out there’s a pair of sweatpants and a sweatshirt on the counter.
She puts them on, drys her hair with a towel but leaves it down, too exhausted to do anything else. The sweatshirt smells like JJ, and she breathes it in. She doesn’t want to think about what it means. She can have a pass tonight, she figures.
When she opens the door, the hallway smells like cooking oil and burnt toast. She wrinkles her nose, pads into the living room on silent feet, and she thinks JJ might be right to treat her like a skittish animal, because when she walks into the kitchen and sees the plate of eggs and toast on the table, she wants to run back inside the bathroom.
JJ seems to recognize her urge to flee, because he pats the seat across from him and gives her a pointed look. “Sit down, Kie.”
She complies, because she kind of owes him, and JJ actually managed to cook something without burning the house down, so that’s a miracle in it itself.
“It’s no five-star Kiara Carrera creation, but it’ll have to do,” he tells her, smiling at her as she sits down. “I only know how to cook breakfast— sorry.”
He seems almost embarrassed, but Kiara doesn’t see why. “No, I love it,” she tells him, and he just stares at her, as if he thinks she’s lying. “Really, I do.”
He grins at her then, his blue eyes sparkling in the dim lights of the Chateau, and then JJ’s digging into his own food like a starving stray dog who hasn’t had a real meal in weeks.
It smells great, even though the toast is a little burnt, and Kiara is starving, but she still hesitates before picking up her knife.
JJ notices it, because of course he does. “Eat, Kiara,” he says, his tone soft but firm. “You need it. Please.”
It’s the please that gets her. She takes a cautious bite of toast, which is burnt on one side by covered in butter. It settles in her stomach, warm and filling, and before she realizes it, she’s scraping her plate clean.
JJ doesn’t say anything, but there’s a gleam or triumph in his eyes when he takes her empty plate from her and places it in the sink.
She was exhausted before, but the food’s made her drowsy, and Kiara stumbles into John B’s room while JJ is washing the dishes. He’s not home, but she decides to wait until tomorrow to worry about it, if she has to. As well as a bunch of other things— like what the hell her mother is going to do with her.
Kiara’s muscles feel like they’re made out of lead as she collapses onto the bed. She’s exhausted, but her thoughts aren’t stopping, and it’s a relief when JJ appears in the doorway.
“You good?” He asks, and she hums into her pillow, not opening her eyes.
But then the floorboards creak as he turns to leave, and she doesn’t know what makes her do it, but she calls his name.
“Yeah?” JJ says, and she opens her eyes this time, studying his silhouette in the doorway, all soft lines and tousled blond curls.
“Will you stay?” She asks, before she can consider what it means, how he’ll interpret it. “I just... I don’t want to be alone right now.”
But JJ just nods, moving to the other side of the bed and lying a respectable distance away from her. He closes his eyes immediately, but Kiara can’t seem to relax. They’ve slept in the same bed before, but this feels different. Heavier.
“JJ?” She murmurs into the silence, and he hums to show that he’s listening. “Thank you. For tonight, I mean.”
“S’ no problem, Kie,” he says, his words slurred by exhaustion, eyelids drooping as he turned to look at her. “You know you can talk to me, right? About anything.”
“Yeah,” she whispered, picking at her nail polish to avoid meeting his gaze. “I know. It’s just... it’s hard, ya know? I didn’t want to bother any of you, God knows you have enough shit to deal with without me piling my own on top of it, and it wasn’t that big of a deal, I swear—”
“Kie, your shit is my shit,” JJ said, his voice firm as he reached out to take her hand. She brushed her fingers over his knuckles, comforted by the familiar pattern of the cracks and scars that had stayed there even after his cuts had healed. “I’m not going anywhere. And this... whatever it is, we’ll get through it together. All of us— John B and Pope too.”
Kiara nodded, and it was silent for a while, but then she said, “I’m sorry. About what I said, about your dad. I was out of line, and I—”
“Don’t worry about it,” JJ said, shrugging, his fingers squeezing hers in reassurance. “I shouldn’t have reacted the way I did, but... it’s just scary, Kie. It was like I was watching you slip away right in front of me, and I didn’t know how to stop it.”
Kiara didn’t know what to say to that, so she just tucked herself into his side, pressing her face into his shoulder as JJ wrapped an arm around her. Their fingers were still intertwined, resting on his chest.
“Kie,” he said after a while, when she was on the brink of sleep. “I shouldn’t have to say it, but... you know you’re fucking beautiful, right? Just the way you are. You don’t have to—
“Thanks, JJ,” Kiara whispered before he could finish, her voice catching. She told herself not to cry, but a few tears escaped anyway. JJ wiped them from her cheeks, wove his fingers into her hair, running them through her wet curls.
“No, I’m serious, you’re like really hot, I—“
Kiara laughed, swatting at his arm, even though there was no real force behind it. There was a certain warmth rising in her chest, as she breathed in JJ’s scent and fell asleep in his arms. She didn’t quite know what it was, but it was new, and she liked it.
Far more than she should have.
                                      •••
It’s better after that. Not perfect, not right away, but better.
She explains everything to the Pogues eventually, and they take it all in stride, as if she’d just told them that she had decided to take up knitting as a pastime.
John B is always there, offering to drive her to get dinner, insisting he hasn’t eaten in days. He insists that Kie teach him how to cook fish the way they do at the Wreck, makes her taste-test each batch and critique them.
Pope does research, because that’s how he copes with this sort of thing, and after a while he starts bringing it up with her. JJ glares at him at first, asks Kiara if she wants him to stop, but she likes it. She likes knowing she’s not alone, that this is normal.
JJ’s approach is more subtle. He’s always making her food (he still can’t make toast without burning it, but she eats it anyway). Honestly, when JJ pouts and bats his eyelashes and flashes that devilish smirk of his, it’s hard to say no to anything he offers her. He makes it easy though, and that’s what she loves. It’s not awkward or forced, just them sharing a basket of fries at the Wreck, or visiting a local food truck festival in town.
She doesn’t know why she thought telling the Pogues would be a bad thing, because it’s nice not having to hide this from them, to know they’ll be there if she needs them.
Kiara doesn’t need perfect, she decides. She just needs her boys— if she has them, she’ll be fine.
No matter what happens.

What Comes Around Goes Around
Chapter Two: Coincidence?
Tumblr media
Pairing: Topper x OC (eventually?)
Warnings for this chapter: Cursing, stalkerish behavior and I believe thats it?
Word Count: 2k+
A/N: Here’s chapter two! A little boring but I swear I’m building up.
Jo stared at the name flashing across her screen, her face riddled with confusion, and an uneasy feeling bubbling inside, even after her phone went dark. What was his deal? First he storms off, and then he just adds her on snap? Typical Kook mentality being an ass and then expecting forgiveness. He had some audacity, two years of shitty treatment, and just because he helped Sarah and John B, and gave them a ride, he thought he could just what? Be all buddy buddy?
“Jo, who was it?” Elle repeated shaking her friend to get Jo out of her trance.
Jo placed her phone on her nightstand, shaking her head. “No one important, go to sleep you two I don’t want you waking up at noon.”
“Yes Mom,” Jess groaned half asleep. All three girls began laughing, as they settled down into some much needed rest.
*RING RING RING*
Jo’s hand instinctively reached for her phone, hitting it until the alarm stopped. Her head pounded and she felt even worse than last night. With a groan she peeled her bed sheets off, and managed to successfully make herself get up. Fishing through her closet which was basically just shorts and bikinis. She hardly ever wore a shirt, there was just no need to when she had her bikini top on. Instead she chose to keep a few in her car, just in case she’d actually need it. She walked over to the bathroom taking a quick shower to wash off yesterday’s party. She came out of the bathroom, dressed, cleaner, and not as groggy. She made her way into the kitchen making herself a light breakfast of yogurt and granola and making her secret hangover cure. The recipe came from her mom’s boyfriend, Justin. It was a long story but basically he let her and Elle crash at his place, after one of the first parties they went to. The morning after Jo woke up with what was probably the worst hangover of her life, and he gave her the recipe.
Jo ate quickly and left the pitcher in the fridge, leaving a note for Jess and Elle and walked outside taking in the morning. It was cool, with a warm breeze, Jo’s favorite type of morning. She loaded up her gear into her truck, shutting the back a bit harder than she meant to, scaring some birds.
“Oops,”
She slipped into her truck, starting it up fast and reversing out of her driveway. She loved getting to the beach as soon as possible, before any tourists or locals were there to crowd up the parking lot, and the beach. Plus it was nice being out there alone, having her mind clear, just her, the waves, and whatever lay beneath them. The water was beautiful in the morning, the sea salt smell and cold water was the perfect way to wake her. Typically she never went alone, but with no one seeing JJ in weeks, Kiara stuck with her mom, and Heyward not letting Pope go anywhere it was pretty much her only choice. Not that she blamed any of them… they all had other things to do and things just weren’t the same. Jo turned on her radio, the sound of Ryn Weaver’s ‘Pierre’ filling her car. She pulled into the parking lot as the song finished, greeting Snappy, the toll collector, and one of Jo’s favorite people on the island. He was a fifty year old, slightly pudgy Asian man who’d been working the toll booth since forever. His name wasn’t actually Snappy, everyone just called him that because when he had just started working the booth at 19 he saved a bunch of tourists from a snapping turtle that was stopping them from getting to the beach. It cost him his pinky finger, and gave him this gnarly scar in the words of John B on his hand. John B was actually the one to tell her the story the first time he took her to this beach. Smiling sadly at the thought of her friend, Jo pushed the gas rolling forward as the gate lifted.
“Be safe Jo, the waves look a little stronger today.”
“I’m sure I’ll be fine Snappy take care.”
“I never doubted, just part of my duty to warn you. Ooh and tell your mother I said hello.”
“Will do,”
She shouted as she pulled into the nearest parking spot, laughing. Snappy was truly the best, and always let her in no matter what. Plus he was one of the few adults that didn’t seem to be bothered when she and John B and everyone else came around. At least when they used to...
Jo hopped out of her car, unloading her board and her bag, the salty air filling her lungs again. She made her way down the wooden path, of course being the first one at the beach. The beach was beautiful being the only one, not a blanket, tent, or umbrella in sight, perfection. Jo kicked off her shoes, letting her toes wiggle in the sand, setting down her bag with a dull thud on the sand. She stripped herself of her clothes, standing in her black bikini soaking in the early morning sun. She stretched out like a cat, smiling before sprinting with her board to the water. Met with warm water, setting her board down Jo began paddling out. Once she was out far enough, she stopped waiting for the perfect wave.
It was a ritual, Jo lived by the idea that the first wave would determine how good her surf would be. She would always try and wait for which wave felt right in her bones to be first, something JJ and Pope would tease her all the time for. Smiling fondly Jo readjusted her focus, trying to feel the energy of the waves. The feeling of the water rocking her, soothing her. She took a deep breath watching, until she spotted it. To the left of her, a wave had begun to form and she knew it in her bones it was perfect. She paddled over to it, and managed to catch it just in time. Pushing herself up and taking in the beauty of the moment. She was right, this was the perfect wave. She looked across at the beach, and was surprised to see a figure heading to the water. Not many people came here early in the morning, even if so they typically weren’t alone. Said person was nearing, and as they entered the water she was quick to recognize the frosted tips. Topper… Her mind thought about last night and the snap request. It was just a coincidence right? This was a popular surf spot… on the cut. But it was probably just a coincidence. She shook the thoughts from her head trying to regain focus on herself and the board. But no matter how hard she’d try to refocus, she kept glancing over at him. Her lack of focus was getting to her, she felt herself wobble and was desperately trying to regain her balance, but it was no use. She felt herself slipping and soon she plunged into the water with a loud splash. She wiped out hard, her whole backside stinging from the impact. And just as quick as she had been sucked in below, she felt two arms scooping her out. She flailed around knowing exactly whose arms were wrapped around her, sending a pit to her stomach. But the salty air began filling her lungs again instead of the salt water, no matter how badly she wished she’d be left alone. She coughed and sputtered looking up at the figure holding her. There stood Topper, holding her bikini clad body like some hero. God this was so much worse than a nightmare
“Jo are you-“
“I’m fine,” she said with a small cough, already wiggling out of his grip.
“I just watched you-“
“I said I’m fine,” She snapped, pushing him away from her. “I was just leaving anyway.” She unhooked herself from her board, and grabbed it walking as far away from him as possible.
“If you think I’m just going to let you storm off like that after a nasty wipeout you’re cra-“
“I’m what?” She said whipping around, almost hitting him with her board. “Crazy for thinking you’d leave me alone because I asked? Or do you want me to suck you off as an award?”
Topper looked stunned for a moment, mouth agape and all. “What? No, I just thought you needed-“
“What I need is for you to leave me alone,” She interjected, looking at him with fire in her eyes. “Look I’m thankful for what you did last night, but let’s just go back to before.”  She looked up at him waiting for a response, but he just stood there mouth open like an idiot. Jo scoffed turning back towards the beach, and just when her feet were about to hit the dry sand, Topper called out to her.
“Jo-“
She ignored him, marching herself to her stuff, collecting her shoes and bag and walked back up to her truck. When she pulled up to Snappy, he was quite shocked she was leaving so soon.
“Everything alright Jo? Did that blonde boy do anything?”
Shaking her head, Jo reassured the man not wanting him to worry.  “No Snappy, it’s fine. Have a nice day. I'll see you tomorrow.”
“Okay… Just if anything happened, if you’d want I can have him banned from this beach.”
“You guys can ban people?”
“No, but he doesn’t know that.” A smile tugged at his lips, as he hit the button letting the gate up for her.
“Thanks for the offer Snappy, but I’m fine thank you.” She rolled forward pulling out of the parking lot, the sound of Flo Milli’s ‘Not Friendly’ playing in the background.
It had only been a week since the beach incident, and Jo could not stop seeing Topper. He was practically everywhere, at the hotel when Jo would go visit her mother, or walking out after hooking up with a tourist, the beach when she was working, the country club when she was picking Justin up after work, and even The Wreck. Everywhere she was, somehow he always managed to be there. The last straw was when she was at the mini mart. She was picking up some food for herself after her surf, and when she shut the fridge and when she turned around, she ran into him, literally.
“Fuck,” Jo said as everything in her hands dropped, including the glass bottle of lemonade that now was shattered and around her feet. Topper was quick to get on his knees and help but there wasn’t much he could do.
“I’m so sorry, I’ll pay for it… All of it, I seriously didn’t mean to-“
“It’s fine,”. She said, kneeling down and collecting her bag of chips and granola bar.
“I’m serious I can pay for it,”
“That was never a doubt in my mind,” She said quietly, already turning around to leave.
“What?”
“Nothing, just can you stop stalking me?”
“I’m not-“
“Right so we’ve just happened to be in the same place all week? Look stalker or not, they have restaurants and mini marts on the figure eight, there’s no need for you to be around.” The two stood there in awkward silence, Jo waiting for him to speak and Topper waiting for who knows what. And just as she turned away, he spoke.
“Look Jo, I’m sorry…. For everything, and I just…. I don’t know.”
“Of course you don't,” Jo scoffed, finally walking away to the front counter. She paid, and walked out to her truck. Topper had some nerve, who was he to just try and apologize after everything? Like he and his buddies didn’t torment her and her friends for the last two years? Men had some fucking audacity that was for sure.
