I cannot express how frustrating it is showing up to a climate march and having to almost miss the train because one of your group members was late AND THEN seeing a ridiculous full face of make up on her. Like girl if you had time to spend on all that glitter you definitely had time to actually get to the meet up spot without being 10 minutes late. Also THIS IS A CLIMATE MARCH. WHY ARE YOU WEARING FOREVER CHEMICALS THAT ARE DESTROYING THE PLANET ON YOUR FACE. God I hate beauty culture.

i forgot how much i MISSED PROTESTING until attending this earth day rally and protest with the sunrise movement. it was so incredible and empowering. during the rally, we discussed the way climate change disproportionately affects people in poverty while the billionaires get richer by polluting the earth. we talked about how we needed to transition to renewable and recyclable materials as soon as possible. and one of the speakers at the rally was a palestinian activist who spoke about israel’s detrimental impact on the environment. i held my sign up as high as i could for as long as i could. i usually keep it right there in my car, so it’s almost like i’m protesting everywhere i go. i just wish i had better handwriting.
Tumblr media
we took to the streets and shut ‘em down!! we demanded better, cleaner public transportation because cars are so polluting. we demanded accountability and action from our government. and we demanded an end to the genocides in palestine and the congo. some of the people on the sidewalks cheered, some of them filmed us or took photos, some of them laughed at us, some of them got mad at us. i didn’t even care. i had the biggest smile on my face the entire time, as we chanted, “mayor lucas, you can’t hide, we can see your greedy side!” “this planet is not for profit, so biden get the hell off of it!” “from the river to the sea palestine will be free!” “if the congo is under attack, what do we do?! fight back!” then when we got to the apple store we stopped and the leader with the megaphone gave a speech about the company’s use of child slavery and their polluting practices.
i hadn’t protested in such a long time because of my mental health struggles but now that i’ve got a new medication (as in one that is actually effective) i’m finally ABLE to get engaged in the community again. it was euphoric. it was an incredible privilege to be out there today. i am so excited for all the future demonstrations i’ll be attending!! i only wish i had the guts to ask some of them to sign my petition to for kc apartments to have recycling options. but at least i’ll get another chance ☺️

Need A Sprinkle of Hope?
youtube
I got to attend the debut of this short (10 min) film all about a youth oriented education and action program that started in Coney Island, NY and is set to start spreading into other parts of the USA! The tactics are mostly research and nature based solutions, and it's an awesome women led org that is making a difference in climate perceptions and resilience of the disadvantaged communities in the area. It's a warm fuzzy watch :)

“Today showed that the GOP is nothing but a group of cowards,” said Adah Crandall, an 18-year-old Sunrise Movement organizer, in an emailed statement. “They chose to arrest a bunch of teenagers instead of facing us. They would rather shut down the government than do their jobs and protect our generation.” The activists, who traveled from across the country to attend the protest, held signs that read: “Climate action not shutdown”, “The GOP hates Gen Z” and “McCarthy: Aren’t you ashamed”. ... The US has two months until the end of 2023’s Atlantic hurricane season, which national forecasters have predicted will be especially harsh. A shutdown could force Fema to respond to coming hurricanes with an unpaid Washington staff. ... The Sunrise Movement is also demanding no cuts to the implementation of Inflation Reduction Act programs – something Biden administration officials are concerned about – and the reinstating of the child tax credit. “McCarthy and Republicans can either do their jobs, act on the climate crisis and fund our schools, or they can risk our economy appease a few extremists,” said Shiva Rajbhandari, 19, a Sunrise organizer. “Our generation is watching and we will hold them accountable for their actions.”

PLEASE ANSWER THIS QUESTION - LEGIT NEED A LOT OF INPUT
what would you call a Gen X climate activist group?
i know this seems like a superficially ridiculous question, but this *will* be an issue in the first meeting of a local group i’m organizing, like there’s a lot of cool things about Gen X. i know that’s hard to believe right now, but we’re not all total losers totally. we’ve got a few good qualities, i mean look at the kids we raised, you guys are INCREDIBLE.
but
i do *not* want to waste an entire first meeting just arguing about the name, and sitting around arguing about band names instead of writing the fucking music is very on brand for these dizzy bitches (i’m also dizzy bitches, if things weren’t such an emergency, this would be fun to do in lots of first meetings, but we’re literally out of time, i need to streamline shit as much as poss).
most of you don’t know me very well, but i promise i’m nice and also i promise you cannot say anything too dumb to me, the ADHD Queen/ high school dropout/ god’s dumbest little angel. i say dumb things on every level in every situation and setting. It’s What I Do, please shout stuff out to me, i literally can’t think of a single good name and i don’t know why.
please tell me ideas for Gen X Climate Activist Group names

Common Dreams
April 19, 2024
Campaigners urged the president to "keep listening to the millions of young, people of color, and working-class voters who are demanding climate policy that meets the moment."
The youth-led Sunrise Movement on Thursday celebrated Bloombergreporting that "White House officials have renewed discussions about potentially declaring a national climate emergency."
The Wednesday revelation came just two days after six young activists were arrested outside Vice President Kamala Harris' Los Angeles, California home to increase pressure on the Biden administration to make such a declaration, which would unlock various federal powers to combat the fossil fuel-driven global crisis.
According to Bloomberg:
Top advisers to President Joe Biden have recently resumed talks about the merits of such a move, which could be used to curtail crude exports, suspend offshore drilling, and curb greenhouse gas emissions, according to people familiar with the matter who asked not to be named because a final decision has not been made. White House advisers are divided over the idea of declaring a climate emergency, with some saying it wouldn't provide Biden with enough newfound authority to make substantial changes, the people said. Others, however, argue such an announcement would galvanize climate-minded voters.
"The pressure is working. Let's keep it up," Sunrise said on social media, highlighting some of what Biden—who claimed last year that "practically speaking," he had already declared a national climate emergency—could do with a real declaration.
Tumblr media
Sunrise wasn't alone in welcoming the news. The Center for Popular Democracy (CPD) Action said that "we've BEEN calling for a climate emergency!! Now, the White House is considering declaring one."
The group urged Biden to "keep listening to the millions of young, people of color, and working-class voters who are demanding climate policy that meets the moment."
As Biden and Harris have campaigned for reelection in November—when they are expected to face former Republican President Donald Trump, whose plan for the planet is "drill, baby, drill"—the Democrats have encountered intense pressure from campaigners including members of CPD and Sunrise to step up their climate actions.
"I'm on the frontlines raising my voice for my Black and Latine families and friends, because I know that we deserve to have affordable housing and healthcare, we deserve an administration who will fight for us, but instead of declaring a climate emergency, we are seeing Biden and Harris expand oil and gas production to record levels," 18-year-old Ariela Lara, who was arrested at Harris' house, said Monday.
Climate campaigners have praised the Biden administration for parts of the Inflation Reduction Act and a recent pause on liquefied natural gas exports but blasted the president for skipping last year's United Nations summit, continuing fossil fuel lease sales, and enabling the Mountain Valley Pipeline, Willow oil project, and construction of the nation's largest offshore oil terminal.

(not sure why the quality's so bad, hopefully isn't so for other people...)
I first heard this concept of "passive support" vs "active support," or, activism, when I first joined the Sunrise Movement. Right now, in my climate activism, I have been discouraged by how few people in my area, especially young people, are organizing. It isn't because people don't care, necessarily, they are just passive in their support. While ranting about the climate crisis (which, believe me, I am as guilty of as anyone,) is satisfying in the moment, why not use that energy to mobilize and build a moment and community fighting for our future? Are there climate actions you could organize in your community? Are there movements you can join?
(Important disclaimer: I completely understand there are people for whom civil disobedience and organizing is more dangerous. I am working on some art about this right now, in fact-- so stay tuned! The fact that in our society the people who are most likely to be impacted by the climate crisis are in the worst positions to take action means that those of us privileged enough to be able to be active in these movements have even more responsibilities.)

WHAT IS ONLINE ACTIVISM?
I am a politics and society student in sixth year and recently my class, studied the chapter of ‘Media.’ I found it really interesting. And, this chapter made me think of different movements that happened on social media specifically. My blog will be about online activism and the political change they caused. So, what is online activism? Online or digital activism is the use of technology, such as social media, email and/or websites, as a form of activism. It enables users to spread awareness and information about political and/or social change (internetmatters.org). In the rest of my blogs, I will talk about these online movements; Black Lives Matter, #MeToo and the Sunrise Movement. I will mention where and how they started, their rise in popularity and the change they caused. So, stay tuned!
