Between @scipiosmith's Yang ask and a post I saw a few days ago, it's got me thinking. The post in question brought up how Yang doesn't really fit in with the rest of Team RWBY: Ruby is a fated anti-Grimm warrior whose kind have been hunted nearly to extinction, Weiss is the heiress to the largest company in the world who wants to change her family's reputation and undo the damage her father has done, Blake is the former 'terrorist' princess of the faunus who's been fighting for their rights since she was a child (largely against said company), but Yang is just… Yang. She's just Ruby's sister, who's trying to find her mother. Everyone else has something big and important going on, but the closest Yang has to that is that her mother is a bandit queen… except Raven doesn't care about her so that doesn't mean anything.

Contrast this with JNPR. Jaune is a cheat who doesn't even know what aura is, Nora and Ren are orphans from a small town… but Pyrrha is an international celebrity, a 4-time tournament winner who has never lost a fight, with a major sponsorship deal, someone who Weiss – who's part of the very highest level of society from another country — knows all about, and who latches onto anyone who doesn't immediately recognise her name and face.

I think you know where I'm going with this. What if we swapped the odd ones out? What if, rather than teams RWBY and JNPR, we had teams RNBW and JRNY? How would it change things?

Well, here's a few ways it might.

Schneekos (hey, I'm still me lol). Alternatively, Pyrruby and Monochrome would work really well in this.

Ozpin selects Yang to be the new Fall Maiden. She lacks direction but she's got a good heart, and she's strong; this will give her purpose. Moreover, a Maiden will need to hide away, and where better to hide than with Tai, his old agent? No one will give a second thought to Yang returning home, and should she need to be anywhere, a trip with her uncle would hardly be strange.

Yang isn't totally sure how she feels about this, mostly because of the risk of losing herself. Trying not to let anything on, she talks to Ruby. Who else? These are the stories she use to read to her! But she's not such a cool big sister anymore; Ruby is stretching her wings, she has her own friends… she doesn't need Yang the same way now. But if Yang can be one of the figures from the stories, she'll always be the cool big sister, right? Ruby is super excited of course, given that her idea of hunters and heroes is still straight out of those stories, and she inadvertently encourages Yang to accept.

Hot-tempered as ever, when the Beacon attack happens and Cinder kills Amber, Yang is right on her heels. Unlike Pyrrha, she's at close to full aura, but also unlike Pyrrha, she depends on getting hit as part of her fighting style. Things end more or less the same, only this time Ruby is arriving just in time to see her sister die.

Ruby is the one to get the major grief arc in Mistral (but we don't leave out the others, because it would be ridiculous for them not to grieve their lost friend). She doesn't have just one training video, she has lots of pictures and videos from over the years, and the others will frequently catch her looking at them and crying as they're travelling. She takes to wearing Yang's gauntlets (if Cinder melted them, perhaps an older pair that no longer fit Yang but would fit Ruby) and, slowly but surely over the course of several seasons, learns to fight with them like Yang did — never as well necessarily since they aren't her primary weapon, but with the same style.

Pyrrha is faced with many of her fans suddenly turning on her, believing she murdered Penny and caused Beacon's downfall. Her mother is furious with her for 'throwing away the life they'd worked so hard to build'. She has to come to terms with herself beyond her persona and reputation, and ultimately decide to truly take control of her own destiny.

At some point after reuniting, Ruby snaps at Pyrrha (probably when the latter is trying to comfort her or something), not just because of Penny but Yang too. Why was Yang the one that had to do all that? Pyrrha's the champion, she should've been the one to do it! Fighting people is what she does!!

Ruby is the one who's especially angry that Ozpin kept his secrets from them, because her sister died for it. Qrow's anger also fits in better since Yang was his niece.

Weiss takes Yang's place in the Adam fight. She has to confront firsthand what the SDC does, driving her (more) to do something about it when the group returns to Atlas.

Given Ruby's ire toward Ozpin, she doesn't keep his secrets from Ironwood, who is now able to immediately begin altering his plans to account for new information.

With Weiss fired up from what she saw in Adam, she takes a much larger and more active role in opposing her father, publicly denouncing the SDC's practices and revealing what she's seen. Although she has no proof and thus can't bring criminal charges against him, her efforts draw the attention of the Happy Huntresses, the workers of Mantle, and Dr. Watts. The former groups quickly become allies, while Watts begins targeting her, thus leading the team into their initial villain for the arc.

I could keep going, but I'm drifting far enough out that it's less changes and more a totally different story from there. Which could of course happen earlier too! Or less could change, or different things!

What I find really interesting, however, is that by making that one little change — by switching Yang and Pyrrha's positions but still having Ozpin pick 'the B team ace' — so many things suddenly fall into place so well. So many things that were, to a greater or lesser degree, askew, no longer are. Everything just smoothes out so much and makes more sense, and the only thing so far that doesn't click into place is bb (which imo needs a lot of work anyway, so yeah).

Why Team RNBW End Up Stuck

It would not be a stretch to say that the situation in Atlas during Volume 8 became what it was due to Ironwood’s faction turning the issue with Mantle into an “Us-vs-Them” conflict.

This is, ultimately, theoretically, why Team RNBW work to launch Amity Tower. It’s a move that benefits the entire kingdom as a whole, and not just one city.  This is why the group that pursued the launch codes end up sequestering themselves in Schnee Mansion. Between trying to care for Nora, they only feel comfortable seeking an actions that will affect the entire kingdom. 

I also think that dealing with Ironwood’s rampant tribalism probably soured them on the idea of showing special preference to one section.

May: Which side are you on, anyway?!

Blake: We’ve heard that before

Ruby: There are no sides! We want to help everyone. We’re all facing Salem together. And together is the only way we’re going to get out of it.

The problem with this mentality is that unless an all-encompassing method is readily available, one ends up stuck not doing anything. Furthermore, if the Everyone is divided into the Haves and Have-Nots, this means the Solution That Benefits Everyone will still mean the Haves have more than the Have-Nots, something that is a major point of contention for the people of Mantle.

Of course, that’s not to say Team RNBW are wrong for wanting to help Atlas. They know that if Salem takes the Staff, the entire floating continent will come falling onto Mantle. The problem is, the situation has become such a clusterfrick that a Perfect-Answer was nothing but a pipe dream.

Ruby: It’s all just too much. [...] How do we fix all of it?

Luckily, in this dialogue, the lesson is right there.

Klein: You can't worry about fixing everything. Simply focus on what's in front of you.

A group of RWBY OC,S teamRNBW(rainbow)

They are all based on cartoon network shows

First

Ray Arcoities based on generator rex his weapon is called gear shift and can switch between a blaster and a sword while his semblance is the ability to control machinery of basically any kind telepathically this includes an opponent's weapons he is the leader of team RNBW

Second is nickel ultra based on The Powerpuff girls her weapons are her hair bow named hotline which I wasn't able to put in this character creator I used to create these visual elements of her design as well as her belt and shoes named Powerpuff her semblance is a form of super strength she is the daughter of an Atlisian scientist who made her equipment and helped her train using robotic drones

Third who was actually the first one I created is Bayrl Celadon who is based on Ben 10 his semblance is called dust time and it allows him to temporarily fuse with dust essentially making him an avatar of whatever dust type he is using in his semblance and his weapon which holds dust and can occasionally shoot out energy blasts of whatever selected dust type he currently has when not transformed is called OmniClock

Finally is Walter Crystal based on Steven Universe

His weapon is called Crystal thorn is a pink shield which at melee range can be used to slam into an opponent or can be thrown and returned to him through the use of gravity dust his semblance which is called bubble allows him to create a pink protective barrier around basically whatever but the larger the barrier the more Aura he needs to use

What would be good team names for. Ruby/Nora/Weiss/Blake and Yang/Cardin/Velvet/Sage ?

Ruby/Nora/Weiss/Blake can easily be Team RNBW (Rainbow) if you want to keep Ruby as the leader, or Team BRWN (Brown) if you want Blake. Weiss and Nora are a no go for this combination unless you go into some stretches.

Yang/Cardin/Velvet/Sun could be Team WYSS (Wisp) with Sun, Team CYWS (Cyprus) with Cardin, Team SSCY (Sea If you pronounce it really badly) for Velvet. Yang is the only one I can't even think of a good attempt.

These two teams are harder, but at least Ruby's team has two good ones. Yang and hers are fucked if she's made leader.

Jaune: Okay guys, we need an airship to get to Oscar, we just need find one here, in the Atlas base.

Yang: Let’s charge in and find it.

Jaune: Or we could-

Ren: Jaune, you know how this will end.

Jaune: Fine.

Yang, Jaune, and Ren bust down the doors only to find five Atlassian guards in front of them.

Solider #1: It’s them! Call for back up.

Solider#2: Why? Look at them. That blonde guy has a sword and shield and him and his team can barely do anything.

Soldier#3: Yeah, those two guys are completely useless compare to that red head.

All soldiers: *laughs*

Jaune and Ren sliced two of the soldiers heads off, surprising Yang. The remaining soldiers were in shocked as the two boys stand menacingly towards them.

Jaune: Alright then. Lets turn off the mercy factor. Ready Ren?

Ren: Anytime.

Ironwood office

Ironwood and the Ace-ops are trying figure what to do with Qrow until they get an emergency call.

Soldier#4: General!! General, come in! Sir!

Ironwood: What’s the situation?

Soldier#4: We need help!! Jaune Arc, Lie Ren and Yang Xiolong have enter our facility!

Vine: Okay, I can understand Ms. Xiolong, but-

Elm: Jaune Arc and Lie Ren? I think your over exaggerating.

Solider#4: They killed just about thirty of us! Send! Help!

Vine: Just shoot them down!

Soldier#4: We did! Except, Jaune Arc, has a dumb amount of aura protecting him and a shield, that sends gravity waves to blow any army sky high.

Jaune: Oh giving my shield gets credibility now, huh?

Soldier#4: Oh my god no! *stabbed*

Ironwood: Hello. Hello! Respond!

Soldier#3: Sir, we need back up! Lie Ren, somehow is a fine marks man who shooting and slicing us down.

Ironwood: Wait, if Mr. Arc and Mr. Ren are fighting then what Ms. Xiolong doing?

Soldier#3: Walking sexy and like a boss!

Ironwood: What!?

Soldier#3: Don’t believe me!? See for yourselves!

Ironwood and the Ace op, using multiple screen, where cameras were positioned, they saw everything the soldier said was true. Yang was just walking like model with a smile on her face. And every time a soldier tried to attack her, Jaune or Ren would defend her by cutting or shooting them down. Jaune for some reason knows hand to hand combat and start punching, kicking and bodying most of the soldiers down. Ren not only did the same but when ran out of ammo, he simply took one of their guns and fires back.

Yang: *manacle laughs* Come on, I’m not even lifting a finger, yet everyone falling like flies.

Ironwood saw enough and turn them off.

Soldier#3: Sir, what are your orders!?

Ironwood and Ace ops stayed silent.

Soldier#3: Sir!? Anybody!? Somebody help!*stabbed by Jaune* Gah!

Ironwood then turns off communications.

Marrow: Umm sir?

Ironwood: We have armor of highly trained soldiers. We have robots. Yet none of them can seem to handle a few kids. Even one with just a shield and sword in hand.

Harriet: What should we do sir?

Ironwood: What should you do? You all were defeated by team RWBY! Hell, if I put Elm in a room with Jaune, my bets he’ll slam her to the ground.

Elm: *feel shamed and offended*

Vine: Sir, we all do respect, but I can handle Jau-

Ironwood: Lie Ren has guns he can use as grabbling guns.

Marrow: I can-

Ironwood: Your semblance only works when you can see your enemies.

Harriet: I can-

Ironwood: Ruby is Yang’s sister.

All the ace ops are sad.

Ironwood: We’re fucked. *laughs* We are so fucked.

Team RWPBN were also listening and saw the video.

Nora: Yeah, they shouldn’t have insulted them.

Penny: Why take it personal though?

Nora: Penny, you try losing a teammate, parents, having to be wanted criminal and secondary character to this show but barely get shit.

Penny: Oh. That’s understandable. I know.

Weiss: Why can’t I have that?

Ruby: Weiss, Yang is laughing while people die around her.

Weiss: So. I would feel like a queen too if I didn’t have to lift a finger to smite my enemies.

Blake: *terrified yet turned on*

God though, the sheer tonal whiplash between the two groups here.

JOYRide is trying to save the people Ironwood has already given up on. They’re running through a city that’s been under siege for hours already, half their party is going through a crisis of identity, and none of them are getting time to rest.

Meanwhile, RNBWPM (I will find an acronym I swear it) is talking about their plan to reunite the world, the kids get to run a stealth mission alongside a brilliant snarky woman with an invisibility semblance, and they’re basically using a reverse slide to get there.

I’m not saying there isn’t good and bad stuff going on for both groups. I’m not ignoring Penny’s own identity crisis (although I will say that Ruby’s support is definitely helping). But half of them are on a mission and the other half are just trying to stall the invasion and save lives wherever they can.

Plus, that party just watched an Eldritch abomination beat up and kidnap a member of their party.

Prediction: Penny is going to be brought to Ironwood next episode and we'll have two magical green beans captured by villains.

Team JYR are going to make plans to rescue Oscar once they reunite with the Happy Huntresses in Mantle. Marrow could join them too if stealing Penny is what finally pushes him over the line. They need the backup.

Team RNBW + May are going to find out that Penny's been injured and taken by the Ace Ops and then make plans to rescue her. They're already in Atlas after all. This will also lead to Winter's defection once Weiss finally confronts her during the infiltration.

We'll have two rescue plots against the two main villains happening simultaneously, aided by defected cops and Happy Huntresses alike.
