PORTRAYALS OF PALESTINIAN X JEWISH LOVE STORIES IN BRAZILIAN TELENOVELAS

So, as many brazilians, I grew up with telenovelas as the main source of national enternainment.

An interesting characteristic of brazilian telenovelas (specially the ones produced by the channel Rede Globo, the most powerfull TV channel in the country) is that, besides the extra production value that can go to cinematic levels, above the usual budget of other latin american telenovelas or british and US american soap operas, is that they experiment with mixing the escapist love story with discussions of serious real life topics in the side plots: politics, street crime, drugs, mental ilness,domestic violence, sexuality, etc. are themes frequently explored in brazilian telenovelas.

In recent years, there were also international real life topics incorporated to telenovela plots, besides the brazilian reality, including, more recently, two attempts of exploring the Israel x Palestine in love stories between born in imigrant families from those two regions.

One a late night telenovela, the other an evening telenovela.

I would like to present the resume of them here, and how they were received by audiences at the time:

Pérsio and Rebeca (Amor a Vida, 2013-14)

2013's Amor a Vida (Love for Life) included the subplot of the romance between medicine doctors Pérsio (Mouhamed Harfouch), of palestinian origin, and Rebeca (Paula Braum), of jewish origin. The two originally entered in frequent verbal fights before becoming a couple, and when they did, it started as a secret to Rebeca's family, and there was a period they expent broken up because the character of Pérsio revealed that he had a past as a member of a terrorist cell and considered being a bomb man before coming to work in Brazil as a doctor.

But eventually they reunited.

When it camed to reception of this subplot, the average brazilian viewer wasn't much involved because there were already a lot of other subplots to be invested in (particularlly the romance two male character that became the first kiss between two man in a mainstream telenovela), and some leftist groups who were acompanying this story interested in how it would explore this real life conflict were left disapointed, repudiating the reveal of Pérsio as a former terrorist as stereotypical and feeling that it simplified too much the complexity of the real conflict between Israel x Palestine.

Ali and Sara (Órfãos da Terra, 2019)

2019's Órfãos da Terra (Orphans of the Earth) was a telenovela of the 18:00 p.m time spot that experimented in exploring the theme of refugees who were coming in mass to Brazil (particularly from Siria, during the height of the US x Siria warn news) and their descendants. One the plots included inside in this theme was the love story between Ali (also played by Mouhamed Harfouch), the owner of a restaurant, and Sara (Verônica Debom), a customer who learns belly dance with Ali's sister Muna (Lola Fanucci).

Ali was the grandson of the palestinian imigrant Mamede (Flávio Migliaccio), who had lost his home in Gaza during the destruction caused by the Israeli Army.

Sara was the granddaughter of the jewish imigrant Boris (Osmar Prado), daughter of the flower shop owner Eva (Betty Gofman) and sister of Davi (Vitor Thiré), a young woman who was serving in the israeli army due to the encouragement of his grandfather, and against the will of his mother and sister.

The old patriarchs Boris and Mamede were neighbors, and started the story hating each other so much that they wouldn't bear the interactions between their dogs, even less so the romance between their grandchildren.

Sara at first pretended to be a gentile, thinking that Ali would reject her if he knew she was jewish, but that didn't happened: the two kept the relationship strong after she told the truth, and had the support of Sara's mother and Sara's and Ali's siblings to be together.

Despite their grandparents schemes to separate the two and make marry people of shared cultural background (which provided a light hearted comedy), Sara and Ali fortunally got happily married.

The two families ended supporting each other trough sad moments, like Davi's death while serving in the Israeli Army and Mamede's development of Alzheimer's when, and had happy moments like Ali and Sara welcoming twin children.

Unlike the more controversial aproach of 2013's Amor a Vida, the portrayal of the love story between a Palestinian and an Arab in Órfãos da Terra was much better received by audiences and critics, by the levity and the respect in wich the two groups were portrayed, without either being villanized, and the strong trust between the two characters that became the couple.

*takes a deep breath* ok so i want to talk about my personal criticism regarding the myth of persephone in common media etc because this has been told so many times across enternainement that i feel like some of its meaning has been lost through time. i'm a huge history enthusiast so this plays a role, definitely, and i'm not saying anything else besides what i'm writing here is wrong ; these are just my thoughts on it. basically, hades and persephone are not the protagonists of the story and they never were. it was always demeter. homer called it 'the hym of demeter' and praises her love for her daughter instead of anything else. there's truly no discussion about 'hades and persephone's love'. hell, persephone doesn't even have a line in the hym ; we don't hear her thoughts at all, which of course opens to a very welcomed interpretation but alas, let's move on. zeus' offers his daughter to marriage without hers or her mother's consent and awareness. his daughter, who he never helped raise and nor was involved in any way. his daughter who was never truly his daughter in anything but conception, but was above everything else demeter's creation, her most treasured companion, her gift and sole happiness in a world of mortals and olympians. a young 'maiden', stolen by death, never to be seen again. all gods knew of zeus' allowance and where persephone had been sent to but couldn't tell demeter, at all, by orders of their king. yet one god took pity of demeter's pain, hekate. demeter, who roamed the earth crying for her baby, who was taken too soon, without warning, to the darkest place in myth ; death. and demeter, who raged like the mother earth herself to get her child back, who cried and screamed in pure agony : all of this is the central theme of the hym, not hades, not even persephone herself. this is a clear story about ancient greek lives where fathers would send off their daughters to marriage without questioning their wives, and where daughters died too young in the process. i say this because normally what we have is a very ''cool but brooding hades'' who is ''misjudged by everyone'' and a ''sunshine and flowers persephone who is the only one who makes him smile'' and against that we need a clear antagonist, so common perception has a demanding, cruel, controlling demeter. this is not accurate at all. demeter is not the villain and again, neither is hades ! but he isn't the victim here too ! did persephone go willingly? only two myths tell that, so, it isn't the wildly accepted version. in most, she was kidnapped, taken, or lurred. and after that, we don't hear what happened because unfortunately her view does not matter, nor hades', nor their possible bloom of love. it is not really her story nor hades'. i personally fufill that gap that yes, she did come to love hades, hence the eating of the seeds and the marriage bond (and after all, hades was hit by eros' out of aphrodite's demmand to avoid kore from becoming yet another virgin goddess, so again, outside forces). her position as queen became more and more tempting as she is a goddess and any god wants power and glory, a maiden to be rival to hera, and stand up to her mother as equals, and not just a tool to her existence. my persephone longs for that power, for that duty, for that respect, and i take into accord the other myths she comes by as the dreadful, just, allurring queen. i also complete in my head that it was always her destiny from the beggining to be a god of underworld, since her name itself is leading to a destroyer and not just spring. but it all comes down to the meaning of the hym, of demeter, of her being 'kore', being a girl, a young girl, stolen and taken too soon. dead too soon. like the many greek women who were sold off to marriage never to be seen again ; dying in more ways than one.

Now we learn how the Secret Service framed two decades of American history in the twenty-first century. On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, President Bush sat in a second-grade classroom for ten minutes or so after and aide told him about the attacks unfolding that morning. Then the Secret Service whisked him away, to do what? Fly around in Air Force One for the rest of the day!

On Wednesday, January 6, 2021, President Trump gave a speech outside the White House, where he urged his listeners to march on the Capitol. Their mission: prevent Congress from certifying the electoral college vote from ballots cast two months earlier, in November,2020. After his speech, Trump got into his limousine, nicknamed The Beast, codename Stagecoach. That was a mistake, as he wanted to go to the Capitol. Once you entere that car, however, the driver determines where you go. The president tried to force the driver to take him to the Capitol. The driver took him to the White House instead.

More on another occasion, I hope. Meantime, here is a Twitter exchange, based on Cassidy Hutchinson’s testimony about Trump’s behavior in the White House shortly before the January 6 riot:

Let’s skip 9/11 for now, and end with a comment about January 6. Imagine how different our perceptions of that day would be if President Trump had made it to the Capitol after his speech. What do you suppose he would have done after he arrived? Would he have led the rioters? That’s actually a contradiction in terms, as riots do not normally have leaders. Would he have stayed in the car, parked at the periphery, to observe his beloved supporters at work as they scaled the walls?

The spectacle of the president outside of his car, urging his followers on from behind the crowd, would have been something. We would have seen the Commander-in-Chief abet an attack on Congress, in person. No ambiguity about that. We knew at the time, and from the congressional hearings, that Trump gambled everything on the success of that attack. He had no more cards to play after the sixth. Determined as he was to stay in office, he was a strongman in a weak position. The Secret Service should have allowed the president to make his last play at the scene.

What would have happened if Trump had made it to the Capitol? Would his presence have affected the events there? Imagine you are a police officer trying desperately to defend the Capitol, and you see the presidential limousine drive up to lend support to the attackers. What does that do to your morale? What if the mob had managed to capture Mike Pence? Would they have hanged him, with President Trump watching and applauding? Mob behavior is unpredictable. We could say they would never do that, but who was ready to predict, on January 5, that a mob would attack the Capitol the next day?

Time to sign off. I sort of wish Trump’s Secret Service detail had taken the day off, or half a day off, on January 6. Trump could have offered his last futile enternainment.

hey do you have any tips for motivating yourself as a university student? i have very few contact hours and just end up procrastinating/not finishing my independent work which is not what i want to be doing at all! i’ve tried to romanticise it but i don’t really know how and i always just end up watching netflix or going on my phone. any advice would be really helpful! thank you!

hello! (ignoring the fact that I am answering this Very Very Late I apologise) I'm not sure if I'm the best person to ask,,, I spend a lot of effort to motivate myself to do bare minimum things (see here lmao) so I also find university a bit of a motivational challenge at times. here are some of my thoughts:

I'm in the same boat I think, as my contact hours are also very limited which gives a lot of empty time which doesn't feel anchored to anything real.

how I managed that was by scheduling regular repeating events that were time-dependent like study sessions at a particular location or w someone, voice calls, exercise, or other stuff - just so I would 'book' that time away for non-procrastinate-y time. it was a sort of psuedo-timetable that mimicked the rigidity of high school while also allowing flexibility to edit.

study sessions with friends, whether online over discord or in person, also did wonders for me (also the pomodoro timer ahaha but that's a diff story).

I think a lot of the issue w me with low contact hours was that just day-to-day stuff wasn't interesting or filled enough which made it hard to engage with anything that wasn't instant-but-low-value enternainment. it's very tempting to default to netflix or social media but for me I took that as a sign I wasnt stimulated enough - so I made sure I had a bunch of interesting activities within arms reach so I could make the choice to switch to smth more productive less insurmountable. I also had long-term side projects I was doing simultaneously along with uni so when I wanted a change, I could work on it and still feel productive!

My weird BATMM expierience

So, throught out my Life i have watched three bersions of the BATMM series,

The german version,

The english Version

and the polish version.

However in we'll be focusing on the german and polish version.

We all know that If a series is translated into a different language, they Look for people with voices which Sound simular to the voices of the people who originaly voice the charakters. The other voice actors do a pretty good Job translating until there are Things that they can't translate. Often they Change some lines or add something to the script, but there are some Things they shouldn't have added.

When i was young i used to watch the German version.

I don't remember much of it however i watched a few episodes Not so long ago and noticed something.

For some weird reason the Charakters stutter when they get confused, scared and/or embarrassed.

I don't mind giving Shows realistic traits as i find it more enternaining.

However in the Show that stuttering trait can lead to some weird moments.

There is one iconic gay blasher Scene in Rocket Ski rescue where blaze accidentally mispronouces crusher's Name.

In the english Version He says this:

"Glad you're okay Crushy-- duh... I mean Crusher."

In the German version He says this:

"luckily you're okay Crushy-- gah- I-I mean C-Crusher."

You See what i mean?

But don't worry it gets worse :")

In the polish version the voice actors sometimes Break their Charakter and Sound weirdly gay.

Stripes has become the biggest victom of this.

When He growls instead of making this grrraaahh Sound He squeaks this weird gaaahhh Sound. He also shrieks when He gets spooked or surprised. He also Likes to purr for No reason at all. Like He can Like See a leaf laying on the ground and He will purr, Like- why are you purring? It's a leaf-

Starla doesn't really have the Same problem however It seems the translator really dislikes her and wants other people to dislike her as well. In every single sentence that comes Out of her mouth is a 'yyeehhaa' which is so God damn annoying.

Pickle Sounds british for some reason-

But do you know what is the worst in the polish version?

In the english Version when the Charakters struggle, for example they are pulling something Up a mauntain, they make these Sounds that indecate that they are struggling, ex. "grrh!, grah!, ngh!"

People in poland can't say that.

When we try to say it we make a somewhat aggresive "gah!". But that often makes us sound confused.

So they just use the polish struggling Sounds which really aren't that bad but the weird voice that they gave those Charakter makes it so much worse.

In short:

When the charakters struggle, they moan.

I fucking mean it.

I have seen so many reactions of people listening to those Charakters moan and Just looking at me giving me that 'wtf are you watching' Look.

And i don't even want to Talk about how those scenes are edited. They make it so realistic it's painfull to watch.

You See in the english version when Blaze or anyone struggle they are cheered by the people around them, Like AJ, Gabby, Pickle, you know what i mean.

Here in the polish version the Editors want people to Focus so badly on Blaze moaning- i mean struggling that they Cut Out all Audio where the other cheer.

So you basically watch where a moaning Truck is pulling someone/something up a cliff while the others Just stare in silence observing the moaning truck.

Hahaha honestly, same about the TV shows, I have so many on my watchlist I don't know how to do this. The Equalizer actually came out in February but I put it off and I'm only watching it now.

So the series is staring the Amazing and love of my life Queen Latifah! So there''s that... I could watch a 2 hour movie of just Queen Latifah doing random stuff tbh, but in this case she's actually doing bad*ss stuff.

I can't do recaps but here's the recap from Wikipedia:

"The series centers around Robyn McCall, an enigmatic woman in New York City and single mother to teenage daughter Delilah, with a mysterious background who uses her extensive skills to help those with nowhere else to turn, acting as a guardian angel and a defender for those who cannot defend themselves while pursuing her own redemption."

So Queen Latifah is playing an ex agent (It's not clear to me if it was CIA or some other organization) who know retired and went private and is helping people involved in crimes who have no one else to turn to were the police can't help (secret operations, unsolved muders, kidnappings,..). She a sort of vigilante or maybe even and Avenger I would say (sort of) lol.

And needless to say that she's good at it...like REALLY good at it. Honeslty, I've liked every episode I've seen so far, but you have to like action shows. :) There are little plot twists here and there and I love those kind of storylines with mindgames, surprises and unexpected turns.

And honestly, maybe I shouldn't have started it because I already bigne-watched 5 episodes today!

The show is based on a movie by Denzel Washington, The Equalizer, which I haven't seen.

It's really good, there's a different plot each episode, where Robyn is helping different people and the storyline are enternaining every single time and the main cast was picked perfectly!

This show is not limited to just lesbian content (absolute gem), it also has other forms of lgbtq+ representation and is a sound enternainer in terms of story line and gorgeous animation.

The angst, the cuteness and all the gay panic moments are to die for! They are constantly at each other’s throats and completely indecisive about it; do we wanna kill each other or kiss ?

I didn't think, at first, to partecipate...but here i am.

First day (i know so late) prompt Froger week: Circus

Every year, the same night, a colourful circus appeared...

It was full of wonders and had continuos shows..

Freaks, Clows, Animals were all there to enternain...

But there were two of most valuable attractions that made the world disapper.

They could enchant you and tragically made you fall for them. No one knows if they were men or women but no one seems to care.

One had the most magical voice, like a siren, someone would say and it was quite true, in fact his/her voice was like a cloud, nice and peaceful, leaving you in a dreamy state.

The other was a magician, a witch or a warlock others said, but we will never know the truth.

His/her magic tricks were uncommon, moving like a serpent, eyeing the prey and then...the grand finale. At the end of the show just smoke and nothing else..disappeared on thin air, no tricks and no strings..just vanished.

But what people really didn't know was they both were trapped in this perfect torture, in a limbo, forced to perform forever.

They were just waiting to find their way out, probably waiting forever.

So, this is it, i still don't if i'll do every day but i surely try and make another.

The cinematography journey from zero to some what good.

I do not  have any previous experience.

Not in photography, not is filmography.

But I have a set of skills to be able to learn from watching and doing it. My name is Terence and I just set out on my journey from nothing.

During these crazy times with COVID-19 IS the mist, yes literally in the mist. I was inspired by the amazing cinematography that available to watch on YouTube. So here I am trying to do the same.

Two weeks ago, I think it was two weeks ago. Maybe three. I went on a walk in Central Park with my friend, Chris. Central Park in Burnaby and not New York but who's judging. With my Pixel 3 in hand and no knowledge, I decided bro just start filming and see if I can make something decent. I have shared my video here on Tumblr in hopes you can be critical to what i can do and try to get better.

I filmed for a few hours and bought sequence to lives in a few more hours. I had to google to do everything on DaVinici Resolve 16. Yes the free one, I’m cheap. From motion blur to post pan transitions. Of course, I don’t know how to color grade and LUTs. Who do you know I am?  I’m going to leave the color later this year because I still can film very well. 

I attempted to film everything on a gimbal but its totally not possible. Many used clips were all handheld. And I doing the filming, it feels so awkward when everyone around you is just thinking “wtf are these kids doing?” Well, I’m not a kid first of all... And I don’t know what I’m doing!

My biggest lessons from this experience:

auto AWB - didnt learn to fix this for the next video

30s not freaking over 2mins!

stop grind doesn't it enternaining

in-camera transitions needs to be planned out

color grading + LUTs make a big difference

smartphone cameras has a smartphone look

My next videos has to be better. It’s going to be showcasing my new keyboard that my brother has been so kind to buy for me. I not gonna tell you the exact one... but it’s so sick!! Cheery MX Blacks on a TKL. I said too much. I hope to post the video soon. 

With all the aim to do b roll, I has got me thinking about a roll. Everyone is doing a vlog but honestly, I am pretty camera shy. Well I think I am. I just don’t feel like I’m very interesting to be on camera. I guess eventually I’ll try so everyone can grill me on my looks along with my journey. 

I don’t mind getting grilled. It build character, right?

Here i show you my re-designed 2017 gemsona, Lace Agate!

She has her gem placement on her thigh and she was originally assigned to a Holly Blue Agate Commander but was later assigned to Blue Diamond to try and cheer her up after the presumed shattering of Pink Diamond.

She frequently suffered the efects of Blue’s sorrow, wich affected her with a lot of force.

But after the Diamonds were reunited by Steven Universe, Blue decided to set her free and allowed her to do what she wanted and go where she wanted. In the end she stayed in homeworld, making friendship with Pink Pearl and taking a liking to Steven.

Info About Lace Agates

Lace Agates are one of the entertainment type gems. Like Spinels, their purpose is to enternain whoever they’re assigned to, with graceful ribbon dancing.

Ribbons can also be used as weapons, much like whips, or to reach high or far places.
