ok listen obviously like everyone else i am Fucking Devastated but the fucking sHRIMPLICATIONS here are KILLING me.

the two last "new" songs we got before the hiatus were alpha dog and from now on we are enemies (equally fucked up song btw) and pete namedrops alpha dog as the last song they wrote before the hiatus and it's such a. it's SUCH a fucking. augh.

like it's so painfully and clearly a farewell. the lyrics all telegraph it. your time has passed. never means forever. walk off into the sunset. the discussion of how much effort is required to maintain this life and how they already feel burned out, past their prime when they were all in their mid-twenties and early thirties. and the sheer fucking POETRY of the way it was the last song they recorded - tell rock and roll i'm alone again - until they announced their triumphant return with save rock and roll in 2013. welcome to the new déjà vu.

and oh yeah the last word issued in the song's studio version is the word "abracadabra," which pete cites as the word that christian bales character in the film “the prestige” says he will utter before he disappears from prison. "abracadabra" was a key word in the viral ARG-esque marketing campaign leading up to the release of believers never die...right before fall out boy seemingly vanished off the very face of the earth.

and, OH YEAH, the first shows they played after reuniting involved a multi-song medley spanning all the stages of their career, with one of those songs being the first time they ever played alpha dog, albeit partially.

the notion of the wizard through the curtain speaking to a sense of bitterness (at least if pete's ten year old genius annotation is anything to go by) which is the exact same phrasing to the way joe would later talk about the band's fraught, strained feelings leading up to the hiatus in a podcast with kerrang while promoting his book.

many people have pointed out the parallels between flu game and alpha dog - the way they both discuss the exhaustion of being so visible and constantly putting yourself out there and how taxing that is, especially when you're simultaneously trying to cover up how hard it is. how isolating it is, when the whole world is squinting against the starlight feathering off you. it's worth noting that these parallels are not merely implicit, either. "flu game" is in and of itself an explicit reference to a famous game michael jordan played while sick in which he claimed that he didn't want to give up, no matter how sick and tired he was. and how did pete annotate a specific couplet, ten years ago?

and this is the first time they've ever played alpha dog in full. nearly 15 full years after the hiatus started. by now, fall out boy have been together for far longer than they've ever been apart. by now, fall out boy has been in their "posthiatus" era for longer than they have their "prehiatus" one.

i dont really have a conclusion to this. just, i dunno man. something about the repeated lyric "never means forever" on a greatest hits compilation titled "believers never die." something about i'm a star vs. so much for stardust vs. no more stardust. something about motifs that span decades, that span years of hurt and cracked-open wounds that have now been poured over with liquid gold, mending them anew. something about reclaiming old scars and ugly histories and reforging them into something filled with streaming starlight and sun-drenched smiles.

My dad was a mechanic. He worked on a lot of bottom-of-the-rung cars that didn't have cassette decks. But they had 8-tracks. Somebody left an 8-track tape of Queen's Greatest Hits in a car — the one where they're wearing leather jackets on the cover, and Freddie's got the mustache. I loved it immediately, and I came to emulate Freddie both as a child and as an adult.

"Bohemian Rhapsody" is arguably the greatest song ever written. I'm sure people told them it was too long or had too many movements. But then it came out and just took hold of the world. When you're in a band and you find something that breaks every rule, it gives you creative hope. And Queen were always trying something new; none of their hit songs were paint-by-numbers.

When My Chemical Romance were making The Black Parade, we watched tons of documentary footage about A Night at the Opera, Queen's best album. We used Brian May amps and wrote songs with different movements. But we didn't try to make another "Bohemian Rhapsody." Whenever someone tries to do that, they fail.

I love the way Freddie performed. He would strike amazing poses; maybe he practiced them in front of a mirror, but he wasn't pretending to be somebody else. That was him telling the world, "This is who I am." I remember when the surviving members of Queen were looking for a singer a few years ago, I was like, "I would love to try it." Freddie's songs are just so much fun to sing, and he had such stamina. I would definitely have to quit smoking to be able to do what he did.

Queen fell in and out of being cool, maybe because they were so sincere. Rock music is all about being phony sometimes. And they weren't. They were obviously so psyched to be doing what they were doing.

They had a polarizing quality. I heard a story — maybe apocryphal — that Queen played a festival and got booed off the stage. Freddie vowed they would return as the biggest band in the world. And they did. When we played the Reading and Leeds festivals, we had to follow Slayer, and got bottles of piss thrown at us. I thought, "If we ever come back here, we're gonna headline it." I've always held on to the same dreams as Freddie.

Note: first ever fanfic here! This AU will be a multichapter fanfiction (not sure how long though as of yet). This first prologue will establish the world and setting and the dynamic between the reader and the boys. I do hope you enjoy! I would love some feedback! I've had this idea for a few weeks now, I love AU rock band acotar boys!

Summary: you were the main vocalist of the band STARFALL, the only female of the group. Being friends and bandmates with Rhysand, Cassian, Azriel, Eris and Lucien was the greatest; however, as time spent together grows, dynamics and feelings start to change between you and the boys. Subtle touches here and longing gazes there. How will your heart take it when you you have to decide to follow your heart or be a rational member of the group for the boys’ success?

"But I’ve never even touched a guitar before, Az…” you voiced, concerning lacing every word as you looked up at him, fingers gripping the music sheet tight in your grasp. You notice that his lips gave a slight twitch upward.

“Yes you have, Princess…” Cassian voiced from his position on the stool behind his drum set, his fingers twirling the stick between them, “You've touched Eris’ and Rhys’..” he wiggled his brows, teeth bright under the lights as he grinned teasingly at you. A chuckle coming out from Eris’ side as well.

You couldn't help but roll your eyes at him, glaring towards Eris’ way before you stomped towards Cassian and slapped his shoulder, a loud laugh leaving him. You huffed, lips in a pout, and brows scrunched as you attempted to jab at him for his tease.

But before you could even childishly reprimand him, a firm but gentle hand grasps your wrist, pausing all action, to make you look up — Azriel pried you away from his bandmate and gave you a smile, one that he rarely uses, one he especially reserves for you. Your eyes wide as you look at him, that smile always took your breath away.

“I wouldn't have put given you the part if I didn't think you would be able to do it, dove…” he gently encouraged you, squeezing your wrist to give you an affirmation.

Azriel and Lucien had just finished writing the newest song for the group and what had surprised you — was that there were three, not the usual two, but three guitar parts. Lucien and Azriel had said that you would be the one to play that third guitar part.

Teeth tugged your bottom lip in hesitation. Everything you've done for the group had always been your firsts — from singing in front of a huge crowd to going around the world — and the fact that Azriel had trusted you enough to learn an instrument you barely knew, said a lot about the amount of confidence they had in you… and that was a lot of pressure.

They knew how you looked when hesitance and doubt planted its seeds in your head. How your normally bright eyes would dim, as you get stuck up in your head with worry.

They had known you long enough to notice your changes in behavior and mood.

The boys looked at each other over your head, silently communicating with each other on how to pull you out of such hesitancy. All of them had confidence that you would shine — you were their main vocalist, after all. They had seen you shine —on and off that stage, all five of them basking in that bright light you radiated. They had no doubt that you would be amazing in playing the guitar for their new song.

Rhysand, being leader that he was, walked to you, gently prying you out of Azriel’s hold, brows furrowing as he looked at you, eyes trying to catch your gaze.

“Darling,” he called you affectionately. He waited for a moment, waiting for those eyes to gaze back up at him. However, when that didn't happen, he gripped your chin, tilting your head so you looked at him. Rhysand watched light come back into your eyes, “There you are, Darling…” he mused with a soft smile.

Cheeks heated as you mimic his smile.

“I can always teach you, (Y/N), how to play guitar. So can Eris..” he commented, your gaze drifting to the other guitarist, who walked over to where both of you stood, a grin on his face. You scrunched your nose at Eris, causing a laugh to escape him, sticking out his tongue at you too. Seeing your attention was on the other guitarist, Rhysand gently tugged your chin, returning your attention back to him, “We got you… we would never let you fall, you know that.”

Glancing at Cassian, Azriel, Lucien, Eris and finally back at Rhysand, you couldn't help but let your shoulders sag, nodding your head, “Okay, I will try.” And the five of them gave you the brightest smile.

Working in the café restaurant and questioning teenage labor laws as she's forced to help with Joel's family business. You can easily identify her by the furrowed brow on her freckled face, her reddish-brown hair tied in a low ponytail with some strands framing her face, and her greenish eyes that roll every time she hears Joel's voice.

However, you can always find her outside the town's public high school, either skateboarding and further damaging her dirty Converse, chatting with her friends Dina and Jess about physics class, or even walking alone with her backpack full of pins showcasing her interests: rock bands, astronomy, comics, video games, and dinosaurs. Most likely, she's listening to a cassette Joel made for her as a peace offering, along with her Walkman.

Still haven't found her? Well, if it's the weekend, she's usually in one of three possible places:

At the bookstore, searching for discounted comics that the bookstore secretary keeps for her at just fifty cents each, which Ellie considers the greatest human discovery. You might also find her quietly reading books from the astronomy or paleontology section, but I can't guarantee she'll hear or respond to you—too focused on her own world.

At the town arcade, often accompanied by her friends Jesse and Dina, who are guaranteed to lose at every arcade machine due to Ellie's competitiveness. She loudly celebrates every time her character defeats one of her friends' characters, and if they're not playing a fighting arcade game, they're definitely playing a racing one, seeking revenge.

At the city's record store, searching for discounted relics of her "niche" musical tastes, although it's usually just depressing music she only listens to at three in the morning. Probably looking for a Mazzy Star record, preferably "She Hangs Brightly" (1990), Yo La Tengo's "I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One" (1997), or any available Radiohead album without preference.

As a last resort, you can always ask Joel by entering the family café restaurant. He'll simply tell you to go upstairs and check if you want, and once you climb the stairs, there's a chance you'll find Ellie studying while watching the movie "Juno" for the tenth time—she always has the DVD of that movie, or perhaps practicing with her red electric guitar.
