----
Seraphina spent the last twenty-four hours uncomfortably curled on the floor of a broom closet. It is one of the only rooms of the old farmhouse still standing. Once bright and thriving, now the farm is just a bitter reminder of a better time for humanity.
What these humans have devised, on the other hand, harkens back to dark times in their history, barbaric behaviors they have re-learned in order to survive their demon-infested world.
It is crude but effective, not unlike the medieval rack. The angel is on her back on an old wooden door. Coarse ropes bind each of her wrists and ankles. When someone turns a handle, the ropes tighten and begin to slowly tug at her slack limbs.
Spending the night crammed into that closet left her crumpled and sore. As her arms, legs and back finally stretch out, she'd be lying if she said it didn't feel good. Seraphina sighs with relief as her stiff joints pop. She wiggles her fingers and toes to get some feeling back into them.
But that's where the contentment ends.
"Please," she blurts out at the first slight strain. Begging does not come easily to the proud angel...until pain is involved.
A few of the humans laugh.
"We haven't even started yet," jeers the one turning the handle.
Flushed with shame, Seraphina turns her head and spits on him.
"You -!" He reels back in disgust, wiping his face.
Then he surges forward again, one arm out. Seraphina braces herself for a blow, but instead the man grabs the handle and gives it a sharp turn.
The ropes - and her limbs - pull taut suddenly and violently enough to tear muscle. It feels like being lit on fire from the inside, all over, all at once. The piercing sound she makes is, quite literally, inhuman. The humans all recoil and cover their ears; the handle turns back the way it came, loosening the ropes once more.
Seraphina slumps back against the door panting. Her head lolls to one side.
"Don't let her - " she hears just as she starts to pass out.
Something pricks her neck.
Mere moments later her eyes open wide. Her heart is racing and her breaths come quicker and quicker.
"What - did - you - do - t-to me - "
"Almost lost you there, princess." The man closest to her pats her cheek. If she had the presence of mind she would bite down on his hand until he was the one begging her.
She doesn't realize that she's cursing aloud until the hand grips her jaw tight, silencing the furious angel.
"That's enough of that. Save your strength. We aren't done with you yet."
Seraphina squeezes her eyes shut so she can't see another man reach for the handle. The ropes pull her to the edge of her body's limit and pause there, waiting for her to catch her breath.
"You'll be...sorry for this..."
In this state she is no longer a threat, but the humans don't know that she isn't the one they need to be worried about. The false sense of security only encourages them to take their time.
Slowly the handle turns. Slowly the ropes tighten. There is no more pleasant stretch, only an ever-present burn in her limbs and torso that worsens with every passing moment. Her pleas and pained sounds fall on deaf ears. Her torturers only pause when she starts to hyperventilate. The moment she is calm, they continue.
Seraphina is still learning the limits of a mortal form. Human bodies are fragile, yet they can withstand the most horrible things. Every time she thinks it has to end soon or I can't take anymore she finds that she can and it doesn't. She expects to be torn in two at the waist at any moment, but what happens instead is so much worse.
Something pops and pain bursts in both of Seraphina's shoulders at once. A spasm runs up her arms and down her back. Her next breath is stolen right from her throat.
None of this deters her captors. A different man takes over turning the handle. If the angel thought it hurt before, that was nothing compared to having her newly dislocated arms stretched as far as they'll go.
It's too much.
Seraphina fails to catch her breath and blacks out. No one notices until the angel's hip dislocating is met with no reaction.
The ropes go still. Two men secure them so their captive is stuck like that, while a third prepares another dose of ephedrine.
As the drug drags her from the comfort of unconsciousness, glass shatters in another room, drawing the humans' attention away. One goes to investigate. A moment later he comes crashing through the drywall.
"What the hell?!"
Too weak to laugh, Seraphina just smiles despite the pain of her reality setting back in.
"Told you," she whispers.

Torture is as old as civilization but the Spanish Donkey or Wooden Horse is in its own class and was in use from the Middle Ages right until the 1800s!

Remember kids. The more iconic and frightening a torture device is, the less likely it was ever a real thing that was used in history.

Let's talk about killing off characters.
Killing off characters is a dramatic device often used to advance the plot, create tension, or evoke emotional responses from readers or viewers. We love doing it. The initial shock, the mourning after. The effects of it on the other characters. It's fun.
Nevertheless, you can still achieve the desired impact on your plot and characters without necessarily resorting to fictional murder.
Here are some alternatives to drive the plot forward:
Character Transformation: Instead of killing off a character, you can have them undergo significant personal growth or change. This could involve overcoming challenges, facing moral dilemmas, or undergoing a shift in beliefs or values. Their transformation can still drive the plot forward and impact other characters. (I especially love it when the transformation is negative—like when a traumatic experience of some sort completely strips a character of their soul. But that's a sentiment for another day.)
Betrayal or Conflict: Introduce betrayal or conflict between characters that challenges relationships and creates tension. This can lead to significant plot developments and character arcs without resorting to death. And it can be cause for quite a lot of angst.
Separation or Estrangement: Have characters physically or emotionally separated from each other, causing tension and driving the plot forward as they strive to reconnect or deal with the consequences of their estrangement.
Sacrifice without Death: Characters can make significant sacrifices that don't necessarily involve their death. This could be sacrificing personal goals, relationships, or values for the greater good or to achieve a specific objective.
Injury or Disability: Instead of killing off a character, you can incapacitate them through injury or disability. This will create challenges for the character and those around them, leading to character development and plot progression as they're forced to adapt to their new circumstances.
Redemption Arcs: Characters who have committed wrongdoings can undergo redemption arcs where they seek forgiveness, make amends, or strive to become better individuals. This can drive the plot forward while also adding depth to the character. Keep in mind that this may not be a suitable alternative to death for some characters—for instance, the protagonist forgiving their abusive parent despite all they were forced to go through may evoke a sense of indignation rather than admiration for their supposed selflessness.
Revelations or Secrets: Introduce revelations or uncover secrets that have significant impacts on characters and their relationships. This can lead to conflict, tension, and plot twists without the need for death.
Forced Alliances or Unexpected Partnerships: Characters can be forced into alliances or partnerships with unlikely allies, leading to interesting dynamics and plot developments as they navigate these new relationships.
Loss of Power or Status: Characters can experience a loss of power, status, or reputation, which can drive the plot forward as they strive to regain what they've lost, seek revenge on those responsible, or adapt to their new circumstances.
Time Constraints or Pressure: Introduce time constraints or pressure situations that force characters to act quickly and make difficult, split-second decisions that may end up being quite regrettable later on. This can raise conflicts of who's to blame, or what should have been done.
I feel like I strayed off a little, but there you have it. Hope this was helpful! ❤

Something Scary for Halloween
Something Scary for Halloween
Real life can be a whole lot scarier than the fictional monsters and situations that are created to entertain us. For example, a scold’s bridle. Admittedly, such torture devices aren’t part of our everyday life unless you’re into the furthest reaches of sado-masochistic games, and since I’m not, I’d never heard of them. Or more probably, I’d forgotten what I knew since that’s not the sort of…

Fluent Freshman - Part 07
PREVIOUS
The thing about Nicky knowing that FF knows Russian and therefore understands every single excruciatingly sweet, ear-reddingly spicy, or shockingly mundane thing that Andrew and Neil say to one another is that he is objectively the 3rd worst person to know this secret.
First place is, of course, Andrew Minyard the man who has now asked him about his family 3 times in the last week and a half. FF doesn’t really care if Andrew goes after the majority of his ‘family’ since it’s just his step brothers and step dad but Andrew might go after his Grandma too so he just says “We don’t talk” every time it comes up and deletes his entire chat history with his grandma that way Andrew won’t know how close they are. If that means that Andrew thinks that no one would look for him if he happened to disappear into a shallow grave FF doesn’t know. He’s already doomed so the least he can do is save his gran.
Second place is, of course, Captain Neil. Captain has mentioned quite a few times that a lot of people stay with friends or people they’re close with over Thanksgiving break. It’s meaner than Captain Neil usually would be off of the Court reminding FF that he has friends but none close enough who would want to spend a holiday with him. He plans to go see his Gran for Thanksgiving and she plans to feed him a truly ridiculous amount of food. It’s the same plan he’s had pretty much every year since he was 13.
Third place is Nicky Hemmick. Nicky is a very nice guy who got him a paperboy to hyperventilate into a couple times and would absolutely never intentionally OUT somebody and compromise their safety! Nicky’s talked with FF about some of his background so FF has full confidence that it’s never going to be something that Nicky intentionally outs to anyone. But there are two main reasons why Nicky is the third worst person to find out about this secret.
The first reason is that Nicky Hemmick just unabashedly loves gossip. FF has heard that with the graduation of the girls the previous year had gone Allison Reynolds who had multiple running bets on multiple teammates and a whole cache of gossip. Now Nicky has access to the ultimate accidental gossip magnet in the man who no one notices, who knows any language the Foxes speak and is too awkward to get up and leave when they start talking.
Nicky will never tell another soul his secret but he also HAS to know what Neil and Andrew are saying to one another and when Nicky lies to cover for him the charge is one free conversation translation.
He’s absolutely hooked on getting translations the since the first time he had asked what Andrew and Neil are hissing at one another one morning practice.
FF translated it awkwardly feeling like a creep and like he’s invading their privacy but Nicky had helped him eat the four slavic letter flashcards he had made up to help a friend study the language when Captain Neil and Andrew had come back early from a weekend alone in Columbia.
Nicky had even assured him afterwards that the ink was probably non-toxic and given him floss so he could get the flashcard wedged between his molars out.
So….
“Andrew’s mad that Captain Neil skipped breakfast because they’re working to make him eat something for every meal. Captain Neil’s mad because Andrew’s the one that kept him in bed so long that he didn’t have time to make anything.”
Nicky squeals in delight
The second reason, which is just compounded by the first, is the fact that Nicky had promised not to tell another Soul. However Nicky Hemmick, the romantic that he is, believes that he and his Fiancé Erik share one soul since they are soulmates. Therefore Nicky Hemmic had barely even registered FF’s tears of gratitude before he was calling Erik to tell him about FF.
The sheer number of close calls that have happened because Nicky HAS to tell Erik about something Andrew and Neil said to one another or something someone else is saying is the reason FF started getting ulcers.
Watching Nicky talk to Erik about him knowing Russian is like watching a member of the three stooges walk through a construction site blindfolded. FF nearly kills himself stopping Nicky from outing him numerous times and at the end Nicky’s smiling, unscathed and unaware of the sheer number of close calls he had sauntered through.
FF can’t wait to go home and bury his face in his grandma’s lap, stress eat two apple pies, and tell her about how he thinks he might just become an electrician or a plumber or an underwater welder because one of his language professors wants him to come and speak to a lower level class (a gen-ed with over a hundred people in it) about the usefulness of LATIN for all their majors since they can parse the meaning via root word and he had panicked and said ’Sure’.
***
The thing about being the only person on the team that knows that FF speaks Russian and is riddled with social anxiety is that it’s absolutely hilarious most of the time.
Every once in a while he has to step in to help the guy.
So sometimes he’ll eat flashcards. Sometimes he’ll distract his cousin with a salacious comment so FF can escape a dangerous conversation with his drunk friend. Sometimes he pushes FF to go talk to Abby about his tummy troubles. Sometimes he’ll hand over one of the brown paper bags he keeps in his backpack nowadays so FF can wheeze into it and sometimes he’ll assure his cousin that FF’s passing out after he offered to teach him how to use a knife was probably because of his stomach ulcers not because FF is terrified of Andrew stabbing him.
Nicky is the only member of the Foxes that FF regularly seeks out on his own to hang out with and Nicky just loves how hard Andrew and Neil are trying not to be jealous about it.
“I want to ask Smith if he wants to come spend Thanksgiving Break with us.” Andrew says out of the blue a week before the aforementioned break when it’s just Aaron, Neil, Nicky and himself in Nicky’s dorm room.
Nicky thinks about FF talking about going back to his hometown in Washington State and how he waxed poetic about spending Thanksgiving Break with his Grandma and how he was going to eat his weight in pie and Macaroni and Cheese.
“He’s planning on going and seeing his grandma. He won’t shut up about it.” Nicky says still glad that FF has a family member like his grandma.
Everyone else in the room look at him.
“He won’t shut up about it?” Aaron asks with an eyebrow raised. Aaron likes FF just fine and appreciates how FF has helped Katelyn start to grasp the fundamentals of the German language so quickly so she can understand what’s being said. “So what he said it twice?” He continues.
Nicky remembers FF’s ability for catastrophizing every conversation with the Foxes into one where it comes out that he speaks Russian and Andrew stabs him. As far as the other Foxes are concerned he’s a man of few words.
“He’s been talking about it all month. If I hear about his grandma’s apple pie recipe one more time I might demand he sneak a slice back for me through TSA.” Nicky loves stoking the flames, especially when the fire is harmless. He watches Aaron shrug and the skin around both Neil and Andrew’s mouths tightens. “You can ask him, the worst he can say is No.” Nicky shrugs.
Nicky is there when Andrew does ask him and he can see the prolonged internal scream of terror on the utterly blank face (or maybe he just imagines it.) and in a way Nicky is a little sad when FF shakes his head and says “No, I have plans with my Grandma.” In an utterly blank voice that means he has functionally blue-screened before turning and walking towards the nearest door so he can reboot in solitude.
“The offer stands if you change your mind.” Neil says and Nicky is impressed with the seemingly very casual thumbs up FF gives as he power walks away.
A little less than a week later Nicky finds Andrew next to FF and FF looking down at a cancelled flight notification after coming in from a truly monumental storm.
Andrew offers Thanksgiving in Columbia again.
Nicky tries to stop it from happening he can see that FF is a little lost in his disappointment over not being able to see his grandma and not thinking clearly but before he can snap him out of it.
“Sure.”

amusing myself with a little snippet of SVSSS lore that I may not ever end up using for fic purposes:
In the world of Proud Immortal Demon Way, there is a special kind of symbiotic barnacle that grows along rocky beaches, the Bone White Bleached Teeth Barnacle. Its shells are ivory-white and come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes that are all roughly that of humanoid teeth. With the right techniques, these barnacles can be harvested, shaped and coaxed into acting as tooth implants that are visually and functionally indistinguishable from the human (or demon’s) original teeth.
The reason the Bone White Bleached Teeth Barnacle exists is that Airplane Shooting Towards The Sky really, really liked a particular dramatic turn of phrase in a combat scene where a character would take a punch across the jaw, slowly turn their head to the side and dramatically spit broken teeth fragments onto the ground. In fact he liked it so much and reused this phrase so often that some fans actually made a spreadsheet of how many times it had occurred in the course of PIDW and determined that Luo Binghe had lost at minimum 17 teeth throughout the story.
Airplane argued that Luo Binghe, with his Heavenly Demon nature, can simply regrow teeth at need (as can any of his demon wives.) But there were enough instances where a human wife had teeth punched out and then showed up in a later chapter with a perfectly intact pearly-white smile that he eventually had to cave.
Three chapters after the spreadsheet was posted, Luo Binghe had a dramatic showdown with a storm demon on a beach where it was specifically noted that a colony of Bone White Bleached Teeth Barnacle grew. Noted anti-fan Peerless Cucumber initially pitched a fit about this blatant ass-covering, until someone else in the forum drew a fanart of the scene. The resultant panorama, with thousands and thousands of humanish teeth growing in profusion along the jagged rocks with the roiling dark clouds in the background, was so unsettling that even Peerless Cucumber admitted that it was pretty fucking metal, actually.
