STUDY IN LOKI ROMANCE

Part 2: Breaking Brad

Since we're only a few days away from the last episode, I decided to COUNT DOWN everything we´ve got so far ( that can be interpreted very easily as romantic ) and discuss what the actual fuck is going on with second season. Because even though I shipped lokius practically from S1E2, I absolutely did NOT expect this kind of development. (Not that I´m complaining)

Warning: This is gonna be LONG post, lots of screenshots, lots of SPOILERS, lot of "oh-my-god-they-so-cute" language, and little bit of meta.

I originally thought that this post would be everything at once, but since I have just too many screenshots this time around, I´ll have to split it. so every post will be one episode. Color coding means:

IIIIIIIIII = anything, that coud potentialy be just acting choice.

IIIIIIIIII = everything else (tzn.: whatever was written, and/or carefully prepared by filmmakers. )

side note: I already wrote, about how amazing it is, that Mobius is unable to fight but fights anyway and how beautifuly, and ridiculously brave he is HERE. But this is about Loki/Mobius interactions, so I´ll try my best not to talk about THAT. (Even when I´m really happy, that s2 continues with this formula and Mobius is still his completely defenseless while aggressively brave self. I love him, btw.)

EPISODE 1 HERE

Okay, Check-list, ep 2:

Mobius opening up to Loki, and admiting he "lost it"

Loki trying to make him feel better and absolutely KILLING IT! btw, I know, that some people think, this scene doesn´t make sense, because Loki didn´t "lost it" during avengers, but was controlled by mind stone, etc.... well I think that it actually doesn´t matter. Guess what else doesn´t make sense? For example the fact, that they already talked about Loki fighting Avengers ( during their first meeting.) Loki is aware, that Mobius saw New York invasion at least twice now, and he´s telling him anyway. I would say, that point here is Loki trying to lift Mobius´s spirit, entertain him, make him smile. Why else woud he start his monolog by "remember, when...?" And I think, that this is huge, actually: Loki, using his bad memory, defeat, his humulianting experience to make Mobius feel better. So not only, that we see, he no longer care about being rurel but we see him making lightly fun of it FOR MOBIUS´S SAKE! He has different priorities now... our immortal god is a grown man now... it´s just so fucking beautiful... 🥺

Also Mobius saying to Loki: "come on, you´re the God of Mischief" Like it´s a best thing in the world, and Loki gives him THIS LOOK! (I mean that head tilt would be considered "acting" category, but I´m already making concessions by including all these things under one number :D

19) Loki and Mobius: mischievous duo

Mobius trusts him so completly!

They both such a drama queens!

And they works so well together!

like... seriously, Brad didn´t see this coming, AT ALL! xD

also... Loki complimenting his plan?!

20) "They say opposites attract. NO." Mobius´s wishfull thinking xD (But hey, it IS true. Opposites attracts. And works greatly together. That´s the only reason, why, for example, trope like grumpy one/sunshine one is so popular!) I can´t! just look at his face 🤣 Oh honey! just calm down

21) Loki, not following Sylvie, but actually staying with Mobius and comforting him. AGAIN. (which is an absolutely glaring contrast compared to episode 2 in first season!)

Sure! Explanations will be sorted under the cut:

SHEN YUAN TIER:

- all items in this tier are either surface level details from the source material or

- daily bingpup is a popular fandom meme (used in the metal gear sense lmfao) started by @ kamkamquats on Twitter that's pretty self explanatory: kam draws and posts a bingpup picture every day! The archive is available here.

I probably should have made this point just bingpup, as I believe his origins precede kam's art, but she certainly boosted his popularity significantly, and now her art and bingpup are canonized with the publishing of the 4th volume English translation of the novel, so I thought it was a fun point!

LUO BINGHE TIER:

- Feynite's au collection: an extremely popular collection of alternate universe fics written by legendary Scum Villain fic author Feynite.

- Scum Villain is a tragedy: an interpretation of the books that poses that from every other perspective besides Shen Yuan's, Scum Villain is an incredibly depressing tragedy.

- Luo Binghe is Airplane's self insert: "Don't asky why Luo Binghe wasn't the embodiment of [Airplane's] ideal man; Luo Binghe's use had primarily been to fulfill his desire to be a badass and get revenge, as well as his desire for wanton [this section has been censored]" (The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System volume 4, page 163).

- Shen Yuan died on his birthday: Shen Yuan's death date is never given in the original novels, but in the first scene of the donghua when he dies while at his computer, you can catch a glimpse at the date reading September 21st (both his birthday and the day svsss was published!)

- Shen Qingqiu's canon fursona: binghe compares sqq to a crane multiple times in the story but is depicted as a cat in fandom much more frequently, leading people to joke about how the fandom disregards his "canon" fursona in the same way bingpup is much more prevalent than sheep binghe.

- Shen Qingqiu can knit: there's official crossover Christmas merchandise that shows all of the mxtx couples participating in different holiday activities: wangxian are decorating a tree, hualian are baking cookies, and shen qingqiu is knitting a scarf for luo binghe.

- Luo Binghe's birthday: Luo Binghe is actually the only main mxtx character that doesn't have a canon birthday. He's noted in the books as being born on "the coldest days of the year", but it's debatable whether this is late December or early January, and there's no specific date from this that we can confirm is his birthday.

- sv manhua's indefinite hiatus: much to the excitement of starved fans, a Scum Villain manhua began publishing in 2019. It ran for a grand total of 3 wonderful weeks before being unceremoniously put on indefinite hiatus because of drama within the fanbase stemming from rumors that the artist/company drawing it actually hated scum villain. It has yet to return.

SHEN JIU TIER:

- Moshang's horrible first time: MXTX stated in a Q&A interview that neither Mobei-Jun nor Shang Qinghua enjoyed their first time having sex together.

- Shen Qingqiu invented maxi pads: the "scum villain pad commercial" is a commercial from the first season of the donghua depicting an exchange where Ning Yingying is self conscious about going out on her period because her sanitary supplies aren't cute, so Shen Qingqiu magics her up some maxi pads.

- Shen Yuan read mpreg yaoi: "#18 Peerless Cucumber [Expert]: Upthread, keep cool. This forum has a lot of Green JJ sisters 😎" (The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System volume 4, page 145). / "''Great Master' Liu! Airplane Shooting Towards the Sky didn't write a green Jinjiang mpreg novel!'" (The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System volume 4, page 295).

- Shen Jiu transmigrated into Shen Yuan: A somewhat popular theory in the fandom that when Shen Jiu died, he transmigrated into modern day Shen Yuan the same way Shen Yuan did to him.

- Cursed monkey island: Cursed monkey island is/was a private discord server made up of very og sv fans that was known for outputting somewhat dark/off-color/weird fics for each other, often with funny porn spoof names and niche concepts. The first fics from there were published in 2018, while the last fic in the collection seems to have been published in 2022, so they might still be active, but I'm not sure.

- Moshang has a 20 year age difference: Shang Qinghua died at at least age 20 (probably older) and since he transmigrated into a baby, he has 20 extra years of consciousness from his first life on the PIDW native characters, who he meets when they're both teenagers in the Airplane extras. Though physically the same age group, he would've been mentally somewhere around 30-40 years old at this point getting bullied by teenagers.

- The microwave: some of the first previews released for the donghua were static turnaround videos of the 3D models set to elevator music -- after these dropped, it was radio silence on the show's status for a long, long time. Fans called these previews "the microwave" because of the static rotation of the models and referred to the time it took for the donghua to come out as "defrosting it in the microwave". There's a fair amount of art/memes from this time period featuring the characters literally inside microwaves, even to the point where people made microwave-themed SV merch. When the donghua finally came out bingqiu were declared "free from the microwave" and a wave of fanart of them destroying microwave prisons emerged.

TIANLANG JUN TIER:

- Wangxian have read resentment of chunshan: in the mdzs audio drama extra episode "Accompanying you to sleep - Lan Wangji", Lan Wangji takes care of a drunk Wei Wuxian by getting him ready for bed. Towards the end of the episode, Wei Wuxian asks Lan Wangji to read him a bedtime story. Lan Wangji says he isn't good at telling stories and Wei Wuxian suggest he reads him The Resentment of Chunshan (bingqiu fanfiction). Unfortunately, Lan Wangji had never heard of it before and thereby could not ASMR it.

- Six Balls x Zhuzhi Lang: a rarepair (also called bamboo balls) written by the lovely Alex here.

- Shen Qingqiu has the protagonist halo: a theory/headcanon suggesting that when Shen Yuan transmigrated, the role of protagonist and subsequent protagonist halo left Luo Binghe and transferred onto him. Often used in angst canon divergences wherein due to the lack of a protagonist halo, Binghe dies from an event he otherwise would have survived because of his story invulnerability.

- Shen Yuan's sister found his dead body: an angst headcanon centering around the idea that Shen Yuan's sister found his dead body rotting in his apartment after he died- very good art made about this here!! (Gore/blood cw)

- Who is zhuzhi lang's dad: we all know zhuzhi-lang's dad was a big snake but what kind of big snake? How big? Why did his mom fuck him? all important questions heavily debated about in this fandom.

MOBEI JUN TIER:

- Every ship is cumplane: we already know Luo Binghe is Airplane's self insert, and Mobei-Jun's cold demeanor is somewhat reminiscent of Peerless Cucumber's tsundere wife-isms, making bingqiu and moshang arguable proto-cumplanes. However, we can go further and argue because Airplane created the entire world of PIDW, all of it in a way reflects him and his feelings, therefore meaning that because it loves Shen Qingqiu and Shen Qingqiu loves it back, every possible PIDW asset x sqq is cumplane in its basest form.

- Original donghua designs: the first pv for the donghua actually featured slightly different designs for bingqiu, which were then changed later in production! You can see the original ones here.

- PIDW is real: someone actually posted PIDW on jjwxc so you can get the real Shen Yuan experience.

SHANG QINGHUA TIER:

- Shen Yuan penetrated into the body of the scum villain: there is a listing for the svsss donghua on Amazon prime video (though no episodes are actually available) which features this banger summary:

An ordinary youth, Shen Yuan, after reading the novel "Arrogant Gods and Demons' Journey", triggers the mysterious system so that he crosses into the book world and penetrates into the body of villain--Shen Qingqiu. Shen Qingqiu's disciple, Luo Binghe, is the main character of the novel.

Even though he was only a year younger than you, him being your little brother meant he was beyond embarrassing

And so were his friends Ethan and Rory

As the cool older sister, it wasn’t surprising that Rory had a crush on you when all of you were younger

“Your sister’s so cool,” Rory said absentmindedly, staring at you in the kitchen while he and his friends were playing video games. You were on a call with some of your girlfriends, giggling occasionally as you caught up on the latest junior high gossip. “And pretty.”

“Ew.” Benny grimaced, giving Rory a disgusted glance. “She’s not pretty, she’s Y/n.”

Years later, Rory’s crush never really went away

In high school, you actually got closer to your brother and his friends

Mainly because a bunch of people in the popular crowd you were in turned out to be part of a vampire cult

“Yeah, you’d think he’d stop by now,” Benny said to his best friend before turning to the blonde who paid him no mind. “You know you can talk to her, right Rory? You guys are friends; it’s not like she treats you like a geeky parasite anymore.”

“She’s still too cool for me, Benny,” Rory mumbled, head resting in the palm of his hand as he stared dreamily at you. Though you never noticed. Because you were too cool for him. “I mean, she’s even cooler now. Not only is she hot, but she’s crazy good at magic.”

“I’m good with magic, and you never act like this with me,” Benny responded, sounding a slight bit jealous.

“She’s better.”

For context, your boyfriend was an evil cultist vampire that wanted to turn you

You weren’t exactly a fan of that

Seeing Rory zip around with holy water in a water gun somehow made you see him in a whole new light

He was no longer your dorky brother’s dorky friend

He was the guy who saved you from a fate that, to you, seemed worse than death

As soon as Erica and Sarah found out about this, they teased you relentlessly

“Y/n, he’s totally staring at you,” Erica said as she put some salad on her plate. “Like, it’s a little weird.”

“No, he’s not.” You responded, but you didn’t bother to look.

“I don’t know why you won’t just tell Rory that you like him,” Sarah said, tired of this entire ordeal. “He’s clearly into you. I mean, how could he not be?”

“I can’t tell him because he’s Benny’s friend. If something went wrong, everything would get weird.”

“I dunno.” Sarah shrugged, cutting in front of you to get some fruit. “I still think you should tell him.”

“I’ll tell him when you tell Ethan.” You watched Sarah freeze at the mention of the brunette, making you and Erica laugh.

Eventually, all of your friends got sick of the two of you pining after each other

They all got together to come up with a plan

Benny was a bit reluctant, you being his sister and Rory being his friend and all

But after talking with the gang about it, he realized he’d rather have to see the two of you together instead of you staring at each other while thinking that the other couldn’t possibly feel the same way

The idea they came up with was a little absurd

But it wouldn’t be the gang’s idea if it wasn’t a little absurd

One Saturday night, the boys were at Ethan’s house, and you were waiting for the girls to come to your place

“So what are we playing, guys?” Rory asked the boys as he looked through Ethan’s fridge. “I was kinda thinking World of Warcraft, but I’m open to anything, really.”

The blonde boy sensed a presence behind him and turned around, seeing Ethan lean against the kitchen island.

“We were actually thinking more of a physical game.” He said, trying to seem casual. “Like hide and seek?”

“I’m down!” Rory grinned. “I can seek. No! I wanna hide! Well…” As Rory debated what kind of player he wanted to be, he soon realized someone was missing from the room. “Hey, where’s Benny?”

Suddenly, the world went dark for Rory. Faintly, he could hear the boy he’d been looking for from behind him.

“Actually, we were thinking of hiding you somewhere for someone else to find you.”

You were starting to wonder where Sarah and Erica were. Being vampires with superspeed, you’d think they’d be on time. You texted them every few minutes, waiting for an update or ETA, but you never got one.

Soon, you were ready to go to your room and sulk about your friends canceling on you without saying anything. But as you were about to walk up the stairs, you heard frantic knocking on the front door. Slightly alarmed, you raced over and opened the door to see your friends.

“Wow, you guys finally show up.” You say with a bitter tone before noticing their distraught looks. “Wait, what happened?”

“Rory got kidnapped!” Sarah blurted out.

“What?!” You all but yelled, eyes wide in shock.

“Come on, there’s no time!” Erica urged you out of the house with a wave of her arm. “We gotta go find him; the boys are waiting for us.”

Everything was going according to plan

You and the girls met Ethan and Benny at the edge of a forest on the borders of Whitechapel

Forgetting to come up with a backstory, the boys gave you very minimal details

All they knew was that one second, Rory was with them, and he wasn’t the next

They knew where Rory was; they had left him in a little cove somewhere blindfolded and tied up

But they weren’t gonna tell you that

“Benny, have you tried using a tracking spell?” You asked as the five of you walked into the forest.

“It didn’t work.” He said with a shrug, which seemed a bit too casual for the situation. But you didn’t feel like bringing that up. You were too focused on finding Rory.

“Are you sure you did it right?” You asked pointedly, and your brother shrugged. You sighed, pausing your movements as you racked your brain for a tracking spell. A tracking spell usually worked best with something that belonged to who you were looking for, but off the top of your head, none of you had anything.

The next best thing, you decided, was a crisp leaf on the ground. Holding it in front of you by the stem, you shut your eyes and envisioned the spell, muttering the incantation over and over until the leaf flew out of your hand. Your eyes shot open, and everyone watched as a nonexistent wind carried it away.

“And you wonder why I’m Grandma’s favorite.” You mumble jokingly to your brother before running after the leaf, everyone else close behind.

What your friends didn’t know was that Rory had somehow wandered out of the little cove that he was left in

Rory wasn’t one to sit in one spot for too long, and even a blindfold and tied wrists wouldn’t stop him from finding something to do

A bit hungry, Rory used his heightened senses to try to find a little snack

Preferably a squirrel or something

He didn’t really know how he’d catch it in his condition, but he’d cross that bridge when he got to it

Little did he know, Rory was sniffing out a bear

And the bear was about to find him first

“Where could he be?” You asked no one in particular as you sped after the fluttering leaf. “Who would take him this far out?”

“No clue,” Benny answered before turning to Ethan to whisper in his ear. “We’re so far from the cove; where is he?”

Ethan shrugged, feeling just as confused as Benny. He didn’t doubt your abilities when it came to magic, but you were supposed to turn left and find the cove five minutes ago. So either you somehow did the spell wrong, and you and your friends were getting lost, or Rory somehow got out of the cove.

Knowing you and Rory well, Ethan quickly decided it was the latter.

“Do you hear that?” You asked, stopping abruptly and making your friends stumble in confusion. Everyone, save for Sarah and Erica with their heightened senses, strained their ears to hear what you were talking about.

Footsteps. Heavy footsteps.

“That’s gotta be him,” Benny said, relieved that you had finally found Rory. He was starting to get a bit worried.

The five of you went back to your brisk pace, following the sounds of movement. But then you paused again.

“Is that a bear?” You whispered, fear starting to overtake you.

“And Rory,” Sarah added.

It was true; in front of you was a giant bear. You didn’t even know animals beyond little critters were in this forest. And there was Rory, blindfolded and wrists bounded, walking right towards it.

You went into a state of panic

You weren’t even worried about yourself

You were worried about Rory

Poor, clueless, blinded Rory, who was about to walk into a bear that was stalking towards him

Someone needed to do something fast, and you decided it should be you

Letting the adrenaline guide you, you ran to Rory. The bear caught sight of you, but you tried not to think about the way it started baring its teeth at you.

Rory jolted when you grabbed him, trying to squirm out of your iron grip. Using all your strength, you pulled him back to the group and started muttering a spell. Realizing what you were doing, Benny gathered the rest of your friends close to you.

“Watch out!” Ethan yelled, staring at the bear that started charging you from behind.

But one second, it was there, about to chomp its teeth around you. The next, you were all standing in Ethan’s living room, no bear in sight.

“Oh my god, are you okay, Rory?” You cooed, quickly taking off his blindfold and untying the rope that kept his hands together. He blinked a few times, adjusting to the sudden light before looking at you, both confused and enamored.

“Yeah, I’m fine.” He let out a puff of air when you suddenly threw yourself onto him, gripping his shoulders tight as you hugged him.

“I was so worried.” You murmured against him.

“What? About me?” Rory asked, slowly letting his arms wrap around your waist. You lifted your head to look at him, face close to his.

“Of course.” You said with sincerity. “Who else?”

There was a beat of silence, and at that moment, Rory took a chance and leaned forward until his lips were locking with yours.

Behind you, your friends were smiling brightly, happy that their plan had worked out in the end. Benny, however, was fake gagging before walking away to find some bleach to wash his eyes with.

Several things after watching 2x03 (spoilers)

-I really hope Victor Timely ends up being like the one good Kang variant. I just want Loki to give him that “you can be whatever you wanna be, even someone good” talk and I want him to prove loki right. I feel like if that happens, though, then he’ll definitely end up dying

-I’m gonna need loki to have several powerful solo magic moments cause I’m getting sick of sylvie having all of the cool power displays (and no him holding her hand and doing it doesn’t count)

-I need to see loki enchanting again. Like I want that to become one of his main skills

-bring his sword back pls

-let him do more physical fighting. Like I love that he’s getting a little more magic use lately but I don’t want them to make the same mistake fanfic authors always make of “oh he’s not that great at physical fighting so he just uses magic instead.”

-I want Ravonna to be a villain who ends up working with/for/dating one of the other kang variants (not timely)

-I love that sylvie is getting so little screen time so far. God I hope it stays like that (even though I know it won’t)

-I try really hard to not be downright insulting even when I’m being negative about characters but my god she’s so annoying and he haircut and outfit are just so ugly 😭

-not enough Casey and D-90 so far. Also I hope ep 2 wasn’t the last we see of Brad.

-I really need that scene in the trailers of Loki walking out to the loom with no space suit to be some ridiculously powerful badass magic thing that he does to save the day

-ravonna’s morals are terrible but she’s so damn hot in her period costume oh god

-I need our main ppl to stay at the TVA in the end, and I need loki to realise the TVA is his new home and choose to stay there too

-I hope sylvie goes back to McDonald’s and leaves everyone alone

ROUND 1A, MATCH 3 OUT OF 8!

Propaganda Under the Cut:

Ariel:

Ariel is basically the Disney version of the tale, but with a bleaker ending of sorts. (I haven't yet watched past season 4, I'm planning to get to the rest of the seasons soon.) She saves Eric and gets help from someone she thinks is the sea goddess Ursula - who tells her mermaids can go on land once a year - to be able to go to a ball that's being thrown. She still has her voice and is able to speak with him and they fall in love. Unfortunately, when he invites her to travel with him the next day, she realises that she can't go with him because he'll find out she's a mermaid. But, when Ursula apparently returns to her, she's given a bracelet to be able to walk again - in return for putting another bracelet on her new friend Snow White which turns Snow White into a mermaid, something Ariel thinks is a good thing because Snow White can then escape the Evil Queen. But, when Regina reveals herself as masquerading as the sea goddess, Ariel pulls the bracelet off Snow White to save her and turns back into a mermaid. Afterwards, she tries to speak to Eric, but Regina turns up to reveal that she's taken Ariel's voice and she's unable to attract his attention. That's why she's like the Little Mermaid. But she features in Once Upon a Time after she's been introduced. She helps them when they're in Neverland, fetching something from Storybrooke. And she's pretty badass after the characters have returned to the Enchanted Forest after the first curse. She can't find Eric and she accosts Hook while trying to find him. And she gets her happy ending! Until she gets trapped in a bottle and taken back to Storybrooke... She's got a spunky personality and the same innocence of the cartoon version but she learns from her mistakes and is wary of people after she'd been wronged. I don't know, I just like this version a little better.

Ursula:

Now, I know this Ursula is considered the villain she is in the original Disney film, but it turns out she started much more like Ariel. She's the daughter of King Poseidon. And she sings beautifully. In fact, after her mother is killed by humans, the king makes her use her voice to lure sailors to their death. When she spares Hook's ship, she leaves home so that she can sing without using it in such a horrible way (by wearing a magic bracelet that gives her legs). Her father hires Hook to steal her singing voice in a conch shell in exchange for squid ink. At first, Hook warns her and Ursula steals the ink for him. But Poseidon turns up and takes it back, so Hook uses the shell to steal Ursula's voice so she can't be used against sailors again. That betrayal breaks Ursula and she goes down a dark path. Steals magic, becomes part octopus, becomes the sea witch. Eventually, she regains her ability to sing and reconciles with her father. I suppose she's a version of Ariel who is deeply traumatised by the way she's treated and it's fascinating to see how she manages to become empowered, even if she takes it out on innocent people.

Does anyone actually like the whole "this total loser is the chosen one" thing?

You start playing some new game. Immediately, you are introduced to the protagonist. He's a total deadbeat loser idiot who has no greater ambition in life beyond playing games/becoming a cool rock star somehow without learning to play an instrument or form a band/watching some TV show. But through just the absolute sheer dumb luck of being in the right place at the right time, he gets The Thing, that lets him do main character in a video game stuff. Much to the frustration of this cool competent badass woman who's actively invested in saving the world and has a concrete plan to do it. Our accidental hero can't be bothered to care about any of that, and any time she's talking he either tunes out completely or sexually harasses her. Then once she eventually gives up trying to explain him he says something like "now here's the part where I do my thing!" and you jump into the action of doing 3 hit combos to enemies or whatever.

I hate that character. I can't stand him. His presence makes me not even want to touch a game, which is a real shame because I swear the paragraph above describes like... half of them. Also most shonen anime come to think, the bulk of superhero media, and a surprising amount of fantasy stuff.

Now, I understand why we have that guy. The thinking is, he's "relatable." We're making a not particularly challenging piece of escapist media, we're assuming most people who are going to be interested are losers who just sit on their couch all day, and we're also assuming they're at-least-mildly-creepy dudes even when demographic info suggests a given genre/medium appeals primarily to women.

Does anyone actually want that, though? I'm not some pathetic dude on a couch, so I probably wouldn't get the "he's just like me!" factor regardless, but like, I remember being a small child and having media constantly cram some annoying piece of garbage kid into everything for me to "relate to" and I was never able to stand any of them either.

Like if I'm watching Transformers the Movie as a kid, I am just rolling my eyes every time we have the dorky little kid going fishing or trying to use power armor, and for that matter as an adult I'm not too big on the pink girly one playing babysitter and being flirty. I'd be cool just giving all that screen time over to Kupp and Grimlock thanks.

And really, it always seems like a huge insult to whoever you're trying to give a relatable stand-in to. Some deadbeat loser who'd just be sitting on the couch watching TV if he didn't get a magic yo-yo or whatever isn't exactly an aspirational sort of character. Even if that's where you'd picture yourself at the start of the cool action narrative, if it were you, you'd want to get your act together and live up to the heroic role you fell into, right?

Like, recently I've been marathoning through Farscape for like the 5th time because a friend had never seen it, and there's a show where the protagonist is just a big fish out of water nerd in a crazy setting constantly making obscure pop culture references that absolutely nobody else is possibly going to have the context for, and I can sure as hell personally relate to that! But the key difference is, he doesn't suck. He does his best to adapt to situations and show compassion and actually learn how stuff he doesn't get works, so he's, you know, likeable. He's not some complete loser who only gets by because he has the spoon of destiny or whatever.

Actually come to think of it, I'm really combining two separate media trends I can't stand here. Loser protagonists get on my nerves even when they aren't the chosen one, and even when they aren't a total loser, I kinda hate chosen one narratives too.

Like... have you ever played a Bethesda game? They always want to do this whole bit where you come from the humblest of roots and go on to save the world or whatever, but they just cannot for the life of them wait until you've actually started accomplishing cool stuff before everyone starts in with the totally over the top hero worship. Just, "behold! This stranger to our lands has picked up the empty soda can and tossed it in the recycling bin! Truly such a feat of heroics means this is no mere mortal before us, but the great one foretold in legend!"

Like, can we please just have narratives where the protagonist is a decent person, who accomplishes things by virtue of actual competence and/or determination, and any respect or admiration they might receive is actually properly earned? Is that too much to ask? And if that IS too much to ask from a protagonist, can we at least stop treating members of the supporting cast who pick the slack up like total garbage?

And speaking of getting treated like garbage/the concept of supporting, I still don't know how I'm going to get through the winter with a roof over my head.

kid! mikey having a crush is literally the cutest thing ever.

he was picking a fight against a small group of high schoolers together with kid! draken, when you saw them. ypu've always had a soft spot for children, almost motherly in some ways, so despite the fact that he could have handle it; just as the bigger kid your age was about to hurt the little blonde boy, you made a direct lunge, hurling your schoolbag right in their face, before shoving another so hard that he was nearly thrown flying. if only they knew you had imbued chaos magic in your hands, but that was your secret.

"oi, what gives?" the bully, together with his little gang, snapped his head towards you, only to see you stand in front of kid! mikey and kid! draken in a protective stance. "stay out of our fight, bitch!"

"you kiss your mother with that mouth?" you raised a brow. "watch your manners, kids. you don't want to see me angry." right on cue, a flicker of red had surrounded your [color] irises, glowing menacingly, and that alone was enough to scare the bullies away.

"goodness! children these days don't have any respect." you sighed, the red glow in your eyes fading as you turned to face mikey and draken, your friendly and smiling demeanor instantly returning as you picked up the schoolbag you'd thrown. "are you two okay? you two aren't hurt, are you?"

mikey was practically in awe, and so was draken, but mostly him. not only were you a badass, you were so pretty up this close too.

"w-we're o-okay.." draken's eyes widened in disbelief as he turned to his friend.

did he really just stammer? the mikey, who's always confident and revels in fighting, was reduced to a suddenly shy kid with a blush across his cheekbones; mikey's shinichiro was suddenly showing.

"thank goodness!"

no, you weren't just badass and beautiful, you were incredibly kind too. god, how can someone like you be this sweet? it was making mikey feel all shy. shouldn't it be the other way around? wasn't he supposed to be the one to protect you? mikey might be a kid, and you're way way older, but he knows martial arts!

but eventually, that became the kickstart of mikey's infatuation with the high school girl that had saved him and his ken-chin. it was definitely a crush at first for him, and it was so obvious, yet he ironically seemed to be oblivious to it at the same time. shinichiro and emma couldn't help but notice how mikey started acting differently ever since that happened.

"hey emma, do girls like flowers and chocolates?" mikey started asking emma questions as such. "or maybe dorayaki can do?"

mikey's friends, such as draken and baji, have noticed him constantly fixing his hair and staring at you in admiration whenever he sees you.

it didn't take long for big brother shinichiro and little sister emma to catch up on mikey. the same goes with the founding members of toman. in fact, they were all intrigued and amused to see mikey act in such a way. he clearly liked you. they'd tease him about it, but he'd shrug it off relatively quick. like, what's so embarrassing about that?

if he likes you, then he likes you. it was simple.

mikey's heart was incredibly happy when he found out that you go to the same school as him, because it means he can see you often :)

"oh, hello! i didn't know you go to this school too." you smiled at him. "what'cha doing here? are you waiting for your guardian?"

"not really, it's just that i haven't really introduced myself, nor got to thank you properly." mikey made a slight bow with his head before scratching the nape of his neck and shyly handing you a single stalk of a rose, wrapped in a thin patterned plastic. "my name's mikey, and uh, i got you this."

"aww, thank you, mikey! i'm [name]." you happily accepted his gift. mikey couldn't help but smile in awe when you smiled. seeing you this happy has since become his motivation.

what started as a simple thank you gift and greeting became a routine for you and mikey. he started waiting for you after school. it wasn't anything weird; he just liked seeing you and being with your company, and you didn't mind it. it made your after-school hours less lonely. often come home alone from school more frequently these days because gojo and megumi have become too busy with jujutsu stuff to pick you up.

most of the time, mikey would wait for you at the school gate and expect him to have a small gift on him to give you almost every single time. you felt a little guilty because he was always giving you something. apart from flowers, you received chocolates, dorayakis, and canned juices, but even if you declined, mikey would insist, so you're left without any choice but to accept.

you and mikey frequently talk about school, such as how your days were or if anything was bothering you two. the more you got to hang out with the kid, you eventually learned how he had a tiny gang named toman, so you were pretty much shocked and embarrassed when you found out he could actually fight. mikey assured you it was no biggie and that he wouldn't mind being saved by you though.

there are times when you don't come to school because jujutsu tech summons you to handle special grade jujutsu-related missions, and mikey gets a little pouty and sad because he doesn't get to see you. mikey has a keen eye, so he instantly notices when you arrive at school drained the next day after missing a day or so.

"are you okay, [name]-chan?" mikey would rush to your aid and ask you as soon as he saw you after school, seeing how you weren't your usual friendly and smiling self.

"do i need to beat someone up?"

"w-what?! i'm okay! just exhausted."

you found it hard to tell mikey why you had been exactly drained out every time you went absent from school. you just couldn't explain it to him, because it was bizarre. mikey would most likely think you were joking or exaggerating, but you eventually decided to tell him because you were out of excuses.

"scarlet witch? cursed spirits?" mikey furrowed his brows in confusion.

see, this is exactly what you feared when you told him about jujutsu sorcerers, cursed spirits, and your identity and powers as a witch.

"you don't have to believe me! it's crazy, i know!" you laughed it off, waving a hand dismissively.

"i believe you."

"what? really?"

mikey admired you even more after learning about you, and hearing you tell stories or rant was always genuinely interesting to him. he'd listen to you all day and never get tired of it, like ever at all.

don't even get me started on the moment you're going to show him your chaos magic. mikey is going to start asking you to do magic all the time. it could be pulling a dorayaki out of nowhere or making tree leaves sway and dance in the air, and it will always be a magical sight for him! he practically showers with compliments. "you're so cool!" "that was awesome!"

not only did you get an after-school company, but you also found someone who understands you and isn't afraid of your power. you were honestly afraid of scaring the poor blonde kid away, so you didn't expect him to like your chaos magic.

kid! mikey "courting" you genuinely made your heart incredibly happy.

Haha, I also hope this is somewhat coherent, but I am very bad at assembling my thoughts into something that resembles a narative, but here are some thoughts that has been carouseling my mind:

Recently, I have been thinking abou beyblade fantasy AU's: A grant adventure, a world fractured into many fighting factions (some human, some elven, some with magic powers and so on), soon to be overshadowed by The Great Dark Lord Nemesis™️

The legendary bladers are propheciesed to save the world, and as of now most of them traveling together on some great mission to raise an army to defeat Nemesis or smth (everyone except Ryuga? Have a very hard time imagining him going anywhere with anyone). However the legendary bladers are NOT a cohesive unit, they are from different factions and have a hard time trusting each other 😔 </3

Along with this, I've been thinking a lot about armor: how to make it functional and actually protective, while still evoking the feel of the bladers original outfit... (ok actually I've mostly I have been thinking about how to make armor, that looks like a crop top with a big billowy coat for Kyoya, but at the same time actually protect his vital organs)

My solution for now is probably layering some chain mail under some cut up shirts, but then I ran into my second problem: that much armor is heavy, noisy and warm (since you'd also need layers beneath the chain mail), would an adventurer even wear that much armor on a day to day basis?... So now I am trying to come with a way to balance that out... (Actually after writing it down tho, Kyoya specifically would absolutely see wearing heavy armor as a great training exercise...)

Also bc Kyoya gets special treatment as my favorite character, and I think he could use more "great-destiny-I-didn't-pick-and-thus-don't-want" issues: Mayhap his mother is the heiress to one faction, but she was driven away by an usurper, who is now out to kill her and her descendents? (No scars from *accidently* falling windows in this AU)... (Also maybe the usurper is paying Chris to take care of her descendents?)

fantasy au my beloved!! the idea of the legendary bladers roaming around the lands and trying to rally an army while constantly bickering with each other is so funny. i have to agree that ryuga probably wouldn't travel with them but! imagine the kenta & ryuga interactions in this scenario :(( kenta tries to learn magic from ryuga who is so so good at it but unwilling (and without the patience lbh) to teach. kenta just stares at him really hard and tries to learn by observing ryuga do impossible feats of magic. ryuga acts annoyed but he also loves the attention lol

plsss kyoya in fantasy armor is simply amazing and badass. id love to see it. i know its impractical but i do imagine him in a chainmail crop top or something similarly unnecessary but stylish. anything for the glam. could also imagine some kind of corset top-like leather armor? i think leather armor would be the go-to for adventurers anyway.

kyoya is the perfect protagonist for a "refusal of the call" trope lmao. it would be a "fuck this, im gonna do my own thing" situation with him. every. time. "i don't care that you're a god or fate or whatever and you can't tell me what to do."

d-did you just make kyoya/chris possible in this au?? FJFDHSSJS maybe it's just my permanent brainrot for this ship but! chris keeps failing to assassinate kyoya but he's come close a couple of times and also kyoya's scars being a result of one of chris' assassination attempts and also they know each other by now after all this time and they probably keep bickering while trying to kill each other which is so unprofessional but it's almost like they're friends and do they really actually truly want to harm each other at all at this point?

The Dragon's Warrior

Barbarian Katsuki Bakugo & Dragon Eijiro Kirishima

This was supposed to be short...a lot longer than I anticipated. This is supposed to be like the abridged version of what I've got in my head! Lol.

Basic premise. Barbarians protect dragons. Dragon queen gets kidnapped, Barbarians rescue her. Miscommunication, Barbarians think dragons are mad so Katsuki offers himself as a peace offering. Dragons think he's asking to learn their ways. Dragons take Katsuki and raise him as one of their own. He meets Eijiro and they become brothers. Katsuki eventually returns to save his clan. He becomes a powerful, badass warrior that no one wants to mess with and Eijiro keeps in touch.

The dragons are an endangered species, hunted near to extinction for their scales, bones, blood, and magic. Adult dragons are hunted to be killed, baby dragons to be raised in captivity to either be killed later or forced into a life of servitude. Alive or dead, life is hell for a dragon if a human manages to catch you.

But not all humans were bad, some still had good intentions, some still wanted to see the dragons thrive. The Barbarian tribes offered up their sacred mountains to the dragons, a maze of cliffs and rocks where they could raise their young safely. It would difficult for anyone to get through those mountains to the dragons. But if they could, they'd first have to get through the Barbarians and the brutish tribes knew that anyone going toward the mountains was after a dragon. Anyone going towards the mountains was a fair target to kill and loot, to protect the dragons and build on their clan's honor.

As time passed, the Barbarians came to see less and less of the dragons. The beasts were able to almost completely disappear in the mountains and they preferred to stay that way. They would happily fade into legends if it meant that they could live the rest of their days in peace. Though most of the legends that emerged were not very flattering.

Many legends spoke of dragons sitting on hoards of treasure long forgotten by man. Others told of reclusive beasts that developed a taste for virgin females every couple hundred years. Vicious monsters that wanted to burn or eat everything in their path. Very few supported the idea that dragons were intelligent or sociable creatures.

Eventually, even the Barbarians would come to doubt the dragons existence. Only sighting one or two every couple decades. Depending on who the lucky viewer was, the encounter might be brushed off as a hallucination by a drunkard.

Until one day when a Barbarian scouting party stumbled across a small caravan. How the group of thieves managed to get this far without being noticed was beyond them. Per tradition, the scouts attacked and killed the invaders. What they didn't expect was to find a female dragon when looting the invaders' wagons. She was in human form, but the runic tribal markings on her skin marked her as dragon royalty. The Barbarian's had studied those runes for centuries, but they never once expected to actually see them used. It was a shocking moment for the usually stoic warriors.

Knowing that the dragons might be angry with the clans for allowing a group to almost steal the dragon queen, the Barbarians immediately set off for the closest mountain pass toward the home of the dragons. Most of the tribe came along for the journey with precious gems, gold, fabrics, incense, and livestock to offer to the dragons. To keep the peace.

The dragon king and a few of his knights. The dragons released horrific roars when they saw their queen, wounded and weary. The Barbarians feared the dragon's fury as the beasts stomped the earth, belched flame, and gnashed their teeth as they roared. Barbarians were not a race to admit fear. To calm the dragons, the young son of the chief threw himself at the dragon king's feet. Because of the ordeal the queen had gone through, she likely wouldn't produce an heir for a long while. Thus it was fitting that the chief's son offer himself up? An heir for an heir.

The dragon king eyed the tiny human with curious eyes, noting the way the baby Barbarian trembled in his boots before him. He grumbled to his knights and one stepped forward, scooping the Barbarian child into his mouth before flying off. The young warrior could hear the choked sob of his mother as he was carried away. He too cried, though none could see his tears inside the dragon's mouth.

At first, the little warrior thought that the dragons intended to take him to their home and fight over him. Or feed him to the queen when she got stronger. But then he was dropped, unceremoniously into a nest with a waiting female. He thought she was going to eat him, but instead she pushed him under her wing with her nose. There he was confronted with a baby dragon, which was still much larger than him but a baby nonetheless. He thought it would eat him too, but instead it just sniffed and poked at him. It ignored his pained shouts when it poked too hard or tried to push it away, that is until it's mother hissed at it and the tiny creature curled into a ball to sleep. The mother looked at the young Barbarian too, nudging him toward her baby and pushing him down to lay down. He got the memo. Sleep.

Every day, the young warrior expected to be eaten. Surely they were just fattening him up to eat him later. But it never came. He grew bigger and taller. Well-defined muscles came about through his constant struggle to keep up with the dragons. The baby dragon, which he'd deemed Red, liked to play rough. If he was going to survive, he'd have to be able to beat a dragon with his bare fists. So he trained. He ate everything the dragons brought no matter how disgusting it looked. Snake and wolf meat weren't very appetizing but if they were all you had you managed to swallow it one way or another.

Eventually, Red was able to take on a human form. Though that didn't mean he could speak the basic tongue most humans spoke. He was eager to learn though and just as the Barbarian taught him basic, so did Red teach his warrior friend Draconic.

As the two grew up together, they became more than friends. They were brothers. They trained together, fought together. Some of the other young dragons would laugh at Red for having a human brother. Well, that is they'd laugh until that human brother managed to kick all of their tales in combat. He might have been human but he was far from weak!

Then one day, the Barbarian and his brother were flying through the lower mountains. It had been a long time since the Barbarian had been through this area, he'd almost forgotten what the land looked like. He noticed something strange, warriors from a clan his tribe had never been on good terms with. Their party was much, much larger than he remembered his clan being. He worried for his parents. There was no way they would abandon their clan. They would fight to death to protect their clan, even more so without their son there. They wouldn't have anything else to fight for. If they lost their clan then they'd lose everything.

That night, his dragon parents noticed how distant he had become. Looking down the mountain toward the place they'd taken him from, a forlorn look in his eyes. He didn't eat or drink or sleep. Red told him what they had seen in the lower mountains and Red's father took the information to the council. The Barbarians had saved their queen all those years ago, now it seemed they needed someone to come to their aid.

Red's mother eventually managed to coax the Barbarian to eat and sleep. While he slept, the dragon knights gathered and flew ahead. When the Barbarian woke, Red pulled him out for a flight. After hours of gliding through the clouds, the Barbarian noticed that Red was descending and he could hear the clash of swords of scream of dying warriors. His body tensed as the clouds dispersed and a horrific scene of his clan retreating and his parents surrendering to give their clan time to escape. But before the enemy warriors could raise a blade to his parents' throats, the young warrior was launching himself from Red's back to continue the fight!

With the strength of a dragon in the body of a man, he beat his opponents back bit by bit. They were wary of this stranger. Who was this dragon warrior? A wild brat raised by wild beasts? They backed away but didn't realize that they were backing into the waiting claws of raging dragons. The enemy clan disappeared as quickly as they came, the young Barbarian only felt a small bit of pity for their wives and children who would never see their return.

He turned to his tribe and knew that they didn't recognize him. He wasn't the child that had been carried off in the mountains in a dragon's mouth. He was a powerful man who fought like and with dragons. He brandished large muscles and a rugged appearance, covered in blood and dirt from the battle. He spoke in a voice that was raspy from lack of use and growly from becoming so acquainted with the dragon tongue. "Ol' man? Hag?" He croaked and watched the realization spark in their eyes.

"Katsuki!" They screamed in unison before tackling the child that they never thought they'd see again.

In the aftermath of the battle, there was a huge celebration for their victory and Katsuki's return. The dragons, now able to speak basic, came to realize that there had been a misunderstanding when they took Katsuki. The Barbarians thought the dragons were upset, hence Katsuki offered himself up to appease them. The dragons thought that Katsuki was asking to learn the dragons' ways as a reward for saving their queen. They didn't think he could do it but it was unlike them to leave a debt unpaid, so they took him and put him in a nest with a dragon around his age to grow and train together.

The dragons left a few days later, saying their goodbyes to Katsuki and promising to keep in touch. All of the dragons left except for one, Katsuki's brother Red. It never mattered how many times the dragon reminded Katsuki that his name was actually Eijiro. The Barbarian never called him by his given name.

Eventually, Eijiro would return to his clan to take a mate and start his own family. But he always made sure to visit his human brother at least once a year. Part 1 of Gentians garden

My comments: Really fascinating and entertaining, epic fix-it with depth and twists and just, wild and uninhibited creativity along the lines of Magical Marriage Ribbons and Fallen. In which wangxian get together (after awkward adolescent stumbling) as students - a relationship that begins to solidify as they study together and debate cultivation theory and invention. (Wwx is already a prolific inventor, and lwj is reluctantly fascinated.) When the Wens attack CR (and WQ turns coat to warn the Lans that it's going to happen) it is, of course, wangxian who save the day with an insane off-the-cuff invention through which they fool the wens into thinking they burned the sect and then quite literally bag them.

There are so many departures from canon! For example, wwx figures out how to call the other Yin pieces to them; wangxian learn to combine their qi and make a single big, extremely powerful entity out of their two selves; wwx never loses his core and while he uses demonic energy, it's not in the same way it is in canon, so he's not universally reviled. And, of course, he and lwj are paired up since their student days. There is heavy focus on his talismans and inventions (yay!) They save the Wens; and stumble over child mo xuanyu (whose sass blossoms once he understands he's safe with wangxian).

Story is loaded with plot and action and character interactions and transitions seamlessly between all of them so that when your teeth ache from fluff there's angst to cleanse your palate, and the same with action and relationships. Wwx's self-worth issues are ENORMOUS and don't seem much settled by the fact that every single other sect wants him and his genius, and there's digging into his past and why he's so fucked up, which gives room for lovely emotional h/c.

And I'm not even going to go into the possessed baby xuanwus (from eggs collected by young mxy), all the illegitimate Jin brothers, the whole province given to wwx by GusuLan as thanks for winning the war (he's SO unprepared to be the Lord of a city), lwj's foul-mouthed secret uncle, the meteor and the volcano. Just. It's epic, trust me.

In the sequel (nearly another 100k) you get wwx trying to face his fears via puppy therapy, a grand cultivation tournament (featuring a newly young adult mxy and his crush), a woman with a strange history, an incredibly awkward jc, wwx hiding a secret he doesn't feel is his to tell and lwj drinking vinegar. It's delicious.

When im watching tiktoks i like to think about my time travel au, where +6years in future spider kiri loak and tuk came back to twow era and they all badass and sassy.

Theres spiri trying to hide (and failing) their romance, not bcsuse of jake and neytiri, but because they dont want to interrupt their friends to lovers slow burn 200k words fanfic from happen, theres loak missing his tsireya wife, theres tuk being a teenager and being badass as fuck, theres the absence of future neteyam that makes everyone silence.

In this au spider is full of metkayina tattoos ( he is a super good warrior) and everyone in the clan is like "omg, we let human in our clan and he has so much tattoos". He is like super badass and a leader, he takes care of the children and talks like an adult but still such a sweety

And kiri is also badass, they are also hiding she is a magical girl and has super powers (eywa daughter), but she is also a really good healer and has a lot of knowledge, she gain ronals respect so easily. And she cant take her eyes of her man, she is so in love, they are trying their hard to hide but spiri is so in love with eachother its obvious by the way they look at each other and talk and touch and smile 😭😭😭 ronal is like 🤨🏳️‍🌈?

Neytiri is trying so hard to not see, and she is so choked when tuk loak and kiri all confirm herself in the future put spider in charge, spider keeps talking about how good he os at babysitting, tuk is mad because she is grown up now she doesn't need babysitting and doesn't need a babysitter thats half her size, spider then says hes not going to babysitter tuk anymore he is babysitting only ronals baby, and tuk got jealous and ronal is like "why were you babysitting my baby" and everybody gives loak a sideeye because since he mated tsireya and spider is kiris mate they all one family now

And also he is really good at babysitting actually.

When im in bed i like to think about sounung.

Its like a continuation of that one long post of mine, i did some weeks ago. Aonung had fallen for good warrior funny strong and respectable spider, and spider is Fighting inner demons.

Then one day the rda attacks again and capture the kids again and spider is the one that can save them. He just catch a gun and do a manslaughter. Everyone is so proud and grateful, its the first time neytiri genuinely thanks him and gets ronal and tonawari respect and some tattoos. He is like cool as fuck now, and aonung is totally in love.

Spider is trying really hard convince himself that cold-blooded killing 19 people havent fucked up his mind in anyway. He talks to jake about that, not that he is sad about the fact that they were humans, its about the fact that he had to kill them, he doesn't knew these people, what they have done, but he knew they were taking his siblings to rda, the same that tortured him, and the thought of rda putting tuk in the same machine they used on him, they are the same size. He didn't hesitate. But he still dont like to have so many blood on his hands, its a horrible sensation, he doesn't want loak or kiri or tuk to have this same sensation ever, loak already have but still. Jake says spmeone has to do the hard work. Spider decided he is nevwr letting his siblings do the hardwork anymore.

He is a implacable beast hehehe

bbc merlin liveblog - s1 ep2: valiant

i forgot abt how many dramatic slowmo shots of knights riding horses this show has

i say id love a sword but if i actually had to use one id probably be like merlin, just flailing around and tripping over my own feet (when i say probably i mean definitely, im like that without a sword)

Player, right? But make them a redeemed/rejected Villain

I personally am imagining the coven/belos when I think of this due to the magic but anything works

Imagine Player being the right hand man to their worlds version of Ganon, being a part of an organization (I'm calling it The Order bc it sounds cool) who's goal is to overthrow the kingdom and free the people. Player being a genuine threat who could take down entire armies and have freed (taken control over) countless villages. Player doing so genuinely believing that they were doing the right thing, that people would be happier if the monarchy is gone. Player realizing that they were being used for the leader's own gain, and that the people they 'freed', were either under control of the order, imprisoned, or (for particularly strong magic users) killed.

Player essentially running from The Order, and having a hit placed on them due to them being too powerful and knowing too much to be freed.

(if player's world is in LoZ) Player trying desperately to find their Link in order to take down Ganon, only to not find him, or find out that their Link was way too young--and have to face Ganon alone with no triforce or mastersword. (If this is in LoZ Player would absolutely have dark magic due to them being avab (assigned villain at birth) and black magic against black magic doesn't do much)

(off topic, but what if Player was quite literally the person who invented/discovered dark magic, and gave it to demise(or Ganon, I'm not talking plot holes rn) as a weapon against Hylia. I say this because the thought of player literally ripping the dark magic out of his body fills me with girlboss energy (is girlboss gn?? badass.) Of course it's not a permanent solution, and Ganon/demise gets it back after player dies, but it would explain why Zelda wasn't needed.)

Imagine after taking down an entire corporation by themself and thus saving the world, the people still don't trust player (rightfully so, they were the face of The Order and the main one doing dirty work). Meaning that player is essentially ostracized, living alone and rarely going into towns, opting instead to grow their own foods and raise cattle. Still though, that doesn't stop player from trying to do good, trying to do anything to make up for the evil they placed upon the world.

I imagine that's why they guided the chain. They wanted to do good for someone else without any strings attached. (LoZ)Why not help the heroes with a job that they already did, (it's their fault he is the way he is anyways)

Anyways, I write this because I really like the idea of Player then befriending Ghirahim. They know what it's like to be used as nothing more than a pawn, only to be tossed away without a care once they proved to not be as useful. Ghirahim is SS not taking their words to heart until he ends up broken and abandoned. When player finally sees him again his world is turned upside down once again when player, instead of gloating about how they were right and killing him where he stood in a weaker state, they instead offer him a hand, offer him kindness that a villain doesn't deserve.

"I decided one day that I was more than what the goddesses designed me to be, that I was my own person and that I deserved to have body autonomy, that I deserved to have my own voice and that I deserved to be heard."

"Instead of having blood underneath my fingertips, I decided I much prefer dirt. Instead of hearing the deaths of hundreds, I prefer the sound of laughter. Instead of inflicting pain I'd much rather bring joy to the people around me, and I think you'd enjoy that too, Ghirahim."

"I don't expect you to change who you are, but I ask that you consider your own wants in this entire ordeal. Who are you as a being separate from the people who used you? What do you want? What makes you happy?"

Ghirahim isn't going to make a full redemption, that's not who he is--but, maybe he can make the first leap so long as you're there to hold his hand guide him.

Okay but if this player is in the LoZ timeline (it would have to be before/during First), would that mean they would have been in Hyrule Warriors? Imagine their reaction to Cia "he is not that hot c'mon".

Speaking of timeline, since this is Player. Imagine the reason why Time/Legend has such a screwed moral compass (besides the trauma) is because Player is relatively early on in their post-redemption how-do-I-be-a-better-person arc and was just like "you can have a little murder :) as a treat" no player you cannot murder in the name of good. By the time Warriors came around, they start to have a solid clue on morality and they both have to be petty while working around the rules and decorum of a knight.

Player trying to encourage Shadow to join the heros but either they don't have a connection, or Shadow will not listen to them (which is in character, seeing as Shadow doesn't trust most people because he's been stabbed in the back).

Spoilers!!!!

Player cheering as Shadow brings up taking down Ganon, only to immediately pipe back down when he mentions it's in order to take over all of Hyrule.

Player nearly crying when Princess Zelda tells shadow that he's just as much of a hero as the other colors, because player never had that encouragement when they first switched sides, only bounties and exilation. Player sees Shadow as an extension of themself, esp if this player made dark magic (because that is player, it's like their shadow child (shadow will kill them)) and fully believes that Shadow can do good before it's too late, that he can still be loved and accepted by the people around him if they just talk.

Actually Crying when Shadow is the one to break the mirror and help save Hyrule. Especially so when Shadow essentially died and returns to a shadow form.

I originally made this with Ghirahim in mind, but much like the entire internet when Sonic 2 came out, my heart went "SHADOW!!" and I rambled on for like 2 extra paragraphs. Take it I'm tired. 📦

Okay but always love a reformed villain

And the idea of Player being the one to give the Demise and ripping it from his body is just 10/10

Nine Lives Blade Works gets a lot of love for being, well fucking Nine Lives Blade Works but reading it in the visual novel hits different and of course better

this is such a spectacular moment, not just for badass Shirou of course, but also because it's going from Shirou's intense, and i mean intense, fear about even just unwrapping the arm a little bit at the end of day 11. there's the plain Magic Facts of it, that doing so will overwhelm his body and kill him, but primarily is the fact, that shirou himself is not fully aware of, that unwrapping it means realizing and recognizing who Archer is, that he is Archer and Archer is him, and that, most of all, Archer is a Hero of Justice, a Hero of Justice with a Mind of Steel who would kill Sakura if it it meant saving the largest amount of people. and that's him. that's Shirou. unwrapping the arm, using the arm, means realizing that and he can't...

until he can, until he does unwrap the arm, and we see Archer's back, once again, like we've seen so many times, but this time he's turning back to look at Shirou. "Can you keep up with me?" and he lends Shirou his power. and Shirou passes him, he moves past the Hero of Justice who at that the point where he was summoned was already crumbling, he moves past him, he reaches the other side, moves forward, and surpasses him. the amazing shot from the movie, the two of the grasping hands so tightly. something shirou had feared so much, the arm in the shroud, something that would kill him, becoming this source of power and strength, not because he is merely making use of Archer's skills, but because Archer sees what Shirou is doing and sees that the kid who is also him is doing something different, is walking a different path, and will be able to save one person.

and then, in the true end, shirou being saved by the small amount of magical energy in Rin's pendant, only this pendant isn't the same one Rin has, it's the one Archer had, the thing he kept with him the entire time, his memento of Rin, the reminded of the time another saved him, coming around once more, the Hero of Justice, at long last finally able to save himself, though not along, of course, you can never save someone alone (see: all the cooperation necessary throughout Heaven's Feel as well as needing points with both Sakura and Ilya as well, otherwise you end up in a Dead End or the mid End, and the fact that, as cool as Sparks Liner High is, you only get there if you fail to win Rider's trust). but it's not through selfish saving that Archer was saved and was thus able to save himself.

I just woke up and I guess my head is far up my ass enough that I decided that I want to do media analysis of the themes of RWBY Volume 9, so you chuckle fucks are coming with me on this stupid trip

I am also pretty much stealing a lot of what I'm saying from @ohnoitstbskyen 's fantastic Boss Designs of Dark Souls 2 series, his recent analysis of Cloud Strife, and his short on the Throne of Want

(Go fucking watch his stuff if you haven't. It's really good and it helped me learn a lot about character design and media analysis)

Alright buckle up!

I think everyone at this point knows that the core theme of RWBY Volume 9 is identity and purpose, what with the afterans being unable to stop talking about purpose for more than 8 seconds

So I wanted to talk specifically about the parallels between Ruby, Neo, and Jaune's arcs, the Cat's pseudo-possession magic, and the concept of Ascension

We've been following Ruby's POV closely this entire season, with very few cut aways to any other characters. So most of us already got what the deal is with her.

Ruby believes she has failed her purpose and has lost her sense of self. She spent the last 8 seasons believing she's supposed to be the hero of the stories she grew up with.

Fight monsters, lead her team to victory, and save the day with a bright smile on her face

But things haven't been working out all that well for her. No matter how hard she tries she can't save everyone, she can't be the invincible hero she believes she should be, and the weight of the world on her shoulders is starting to take its toll

(Funny how heroism burnout seems to be a recurring theme in media nowadays)

Ruby has failed her perceived purpose, and since she has no clue who Ruby Rose IS, only who Ruby Rose SHOULD BE, she's left aimless and ripe for being manipulated into taking the ego death juice from the tree

Especially with Neo's illusions constantly reinforcing all of Ruby's worst fears. The fear that the world would be better without her. That who Ruby Rose actually is is a failure and a danger to those around her

So we can get back to Ruby's "suicide" later, for now let's focus on Neopolitan herself

Because Neo shows a different take on this issue. The loss of self not through failing your perceived purpose, but through completely fulfilling it

Ever since Roman's death Neo's sole motivation for doing anything has been taking revenge on those she perceived as being responsible for it. Namely Cinder and Ruby.

Every action she took since her reintroduction in Volume 6 has been motivated by this drive for revenge and nothing else.

And once she lands in the Ever After she decides that death isn't enough. This isn't just killing Ruby like she killed Roman. This is about destroying Ruby's identity, about erasing everything that makes her Ruby, just like Roman's death threatened to erase everything that made her Neo

And so she does. Ruby drinks the tea and is taken by the tree to Ascend, and now Neo has nothing

Her purpose is fulfilled, her mission is over, and now she's left with the question she's been avoiding since the Fall of Beacon

"Who is she without Roman?"

And she cannot answer. Without Roman and without her revenge to drive her, Neopolitan has nothing.

And an empty heart is the perfect vessel for someone else's intent.

But we'll put a pin on that for now and move on to the third character in this mess

Jaune

Oh this poor man. He is the proof that sticking to your identity and sticking to your purpose is maybe not super healthy either.

Jaune's arc (hah!) had always been that of accepting that he was not the protagonist. He isn't the hero, he isn't the badass, and this isn't his story.

And by the time we reach Volume 8 he has accepted that, he has taken up his new role as the support. His equipment and his semblance are geared towards helping other people excel and be better. He makes everyone else the protagonist.

Hell when he lands in the Ever After the world just hands him that role again by making him a supporting character in Alyx's story, but well... we know how that went

So now Jaune is left alone for DECADES! And for all those years all he has to keep him even remotely sane is that purpose. Help others!

Decades of helping the paper pleasers every day, decades of waiting for team RWBY because THEY are the real protagonists, decades of refusing to change and refusing to let anything around him change

It destroys him in the end, but at least his heart stays strong through most of it. Strong enough to resist the cat's power.

And here we are back at the Curious fucking Cat, or Kyuubey 2.0 as I like to call them.

Throughout the season we see our favorite shit cat "help" other afterans by (in their words) giving them a piece of their heart. In hindsight it's obvious what it is they were doing

It was manipulation masquerading as kindness.

They see people who struggle with a lack of purpose and intercedes by forcing their will upon them.

They do all they can to exhaust Ruby's sense of self, to shatter her heart so theirs can take over

And when that fails they turn to Neo, who is now an empty shell of who she used to be. Perfect to be filled by their will.

(god I so hope Neo is actually dead now, because if this really is possession I'm gonna be feeling sick for a while. Fucking hate this trigger, man)

(Also if you played FFVII you probably know now why I mentioned Cloud Strife at the start)

So that's all their arcs in a nutshell, but what exactly is the parallel I mentioned before?

It's change... or well, a lack of it

Not Ruby, nor Neo, nor Jaune, are capable of changing and moving on.

Ruby finds it easier to erase herself completely than to move on from her failures

Neo doesn't even consider the idea of moving on a possibility, and vehemently refuses to until her very last moments

And Jaune clings to this groundhog day that is his life, because this is the only thing keeping him going

They either refuse to change or cannot comprehend changing as an option

And that brings us to the last topic I wanted to touch on (god I really don't wanna see what the word count for this looks like)

Ascension

When an afteran loses sight of their purpose they ascend. The tree erases their memories, gives them a new purpose, and a new self to fulfill it.

This process seems to be tied to two entities: The Curious Cat AND the Blacksmith

But most importantly this is tied to CHANGE! And much like change it can be both a beneficial and dangerous force.

When we see CC using their powers it is now obvious that they're just influencing the people around them to become whatever they want them to become.

Herb is no longer useful to their plans? Off to the tree with him

They need cannon fodder to protect Ruby? Time to change that one Hawker's identity completely.

It's not about the person changing, it's always about them. They're change as manipulation and destruction. The Curious Cat is ego death, the loss of identity to the heart of another.

Then there's the Blacksmith. She seems to take a more comforting approach to change and ascension. She asks Ruby to settle down her burdens and tells her to pick a new weapon, a new her that she can be

And of course from Ruby's perspective the options she sees are those she thinks she should see. Is she supposed to be like Penny? The greatest warrior to have ever lived. Is she supposed to be Alyx? The protagonist who made her way out of this hellhole by herself. Or is she supposed to be her mother? The heroic ideal she could never live up to.

That's the thing, right? She isn't supposed to be any of them. Ruby Rose is only meant to be Ruby Rose, and I think she'll finally get to decide who that is.

As much as I have called this suicide or ego death, I don't think that that's what awaits Ruby

I think the Paper Pleasers had the right idea. They finished their job, they did what they set out to do, they were satisfied and it was time for them to move on to something else

Change won't be the end for them, it will just be a new beginning

Maybe Jaune will be able to change and move on, finally letting go of the purpose he has been torturing himself with

Maybe Neo is still alive in there and will be able to kick the Curious Cat out of her body by finding something new to drive her (I would be very happy for her once I recovered from the panic and nausea)

I know this Volume has not given us much reason to be hopeful, but I also don't think CRWBY is writing angst for angst's sake. All of this has a purpose and a message

That change can be a scary thing, but it's also what you need to be able to grow
