The FTC on Monday came out swinging saying it’ll start taking companies to the shed who use false claims of "anonymized" data as a free pass to rent, trade, and share sensitive user information. (It has been proven repeatedly that deanonymizing is a snap.) This feels like a pre-regulation shot across the bow, and let’s hope they bring some pain. As someone who started raising the alarm about this in articles and books over ten years ago, this actually feels good."
