You know what else was interesting

They have to re-introduce the characters to the new audience, right?

So they show Chim being insecure he's not enough for his romantic partner... Like in the beginning of the series

But then his whole dynamic with Maddie and just the love and adoration between them

They show Bobby and Athena and make it clear what a high stress life they have but that they did find an anchor in each other

And they show how vigilant Athena always is and how they immediately work as a team

They show Hen as the competent Captain with a side of paramedic and also her empathy and kindness

and her and Chim being hilarious best friends

They show Buck and Eddie together talking about dating first and then about Chris

The easy communication between them

That they're partners not only at work because

They show the Buckley Diaz family. They show how natural this dynamic is. Eddie is like... Hey I was hoping you'd talk to him and Buck just does and Chris doesn't even question it

They position Buck as Chris' guardian /father as if it's the most normal thing

They bring up Shannon and show how much she and what happened in the past has impacted their life and relationship to each other but they also throw some healing into this

Some kind of closure to this

Still, it's interesting that they show Buck as the link there

Chris does not only not question why Buck is talking to him about dating but he also trusts Buck enough to tell him how he really feels which is a huge thing

In general but also cause Chris is a teen now

It's also interesting they brought up Eddie's panic attacks

On the one hand they're showing that something was going on with him but that he's healed a lot and doing much better than before

On the other hand it might be foreshadowing

To the changes in his romantic life and the link to the shooting

To the upcoming trauma and triggers

(please please let it be foreshadowing)

And then.....

they told us shit about Marisol

Eddie didn't even answer Buck when he was like... Oh I thought things were going great with her

She was there, yeah, but not even as an active presence

They didn't give her any room or interaction with Chris either

And I think that's so telling!?

So yeah absolutely loving it all so far and find it very very interesting what they chose to show about the characters within the first ep

I do find it weird though that all the other kids were left out and Karen as well

Hii! I'm a new fan in pjo fandom, watched the show, never read the books(but I'm definitely planning now), but I heard a lot, and heard some spoilers. I want to ask about Clarisse, because from what I've seen, everyone really loves her in the show, despite her being a bully, but I know that Clarisse in the books described as more manly, not that beautiful, I've heard that Percy even calls her ugly etc. I've seen some fanart, and it's obvious that she's beautiful, just not conventionaly beautiful. And I'm wondering, do people in fandom like book Clarisse as well as the show Clarisse? Or could it be that they really love show Clarisse or started to love her just because she is played by conventionaly attractive actress? Because idk why, but sometimes it seems like it, and it makes me kinda sad for book Clarisse 🙈 sorry if that's too long, but I'm just really curious. Hope you will have a great day🙌

Hi, this is a great question! I think Book!Clarisse is a character that many people strongly dislike until they learn more about her as a person/character and grow to respect her, especially since we see Percy experience the same shift of perspective in the books. I think that book readers see that version of Clarisse while watching the show, and so that respect and care for that character carries over. However, I have no doubt some people are more lenient toward TV!Clarisse and her behavior when watching the show because the actor is conventionally attractive, which is an unfortunate, but separate (though not unrelated) discussion.

The whole Daniel/ Michael situation is going to be so awkward. To me it’s clear that something happened with them since last year. With that whole rumour about Daniel having to go to the fia about his weight and Seb getting involved?

They’re of course going to be professional about it all but it’s probably going to be awkward. I mean Michael wasn’t invited to Scottys wedding and they were close friends and did a bunch together.

Just my opinion though. I could be completely wrong, something just feels off with them. 🤷‍♀️

the funny thing about rgu episode 31 is that in the end Nanami found out her love for Touga was just normal admiration of a brother figure and when she sat back in the room after seeing Anthy and Akio it was so hard for her to process what was going on, comparing it to her experiences and Anthy’s.

late night thinking about jess… (it’s 9pm)

did jess ever get into photography?

there’s a fine line between jess finding photography pretentious and capturing film himself. as a guy with a life like he had, i imagine him finding these types of hobbies useless. there’s much more important things to take up his time (reading, jacking off, working, thinking about his step-cousin, etc). i can also picture (no pun intended) him taking his camera everywhere in his mid-twenties and on. mostly just landscapes/anything he admires. just not himself or people really. besides ONE slutty jess mirror picture with half his face covered. maybe a few pictures of a girlfriend from afar when she’s curling her hair, because he takes pictures of things he finds beautiful.

I would argue that the same goes for women regarding men. I mean, I've never seen myself as a "romantic resource" (what does that even mean?! 😂😂) but who knows? The universe is a strange and wondrous place 🤭

Let's appreciate how the Greek gods operate here (at least the ones they've introduced so far.);

Hermes; The god of thieves and travelers- who wants to he there for his son (his kids,) but can't. Who was there to watch Luke's mom take the responsibility of the Oracle only to fail. Whose laid back, but responsible. And his favorite son hates him, rejects him, and betrays them.

Ares & Athena; god of war and the goddess of wisdom & goddess of warfare. Whose favorite daughters fight tooth and nail to be the best. Prove themselves to everyone in camp. Whether it's the best fighter/warrior in camp (Clairisse) or prove themselves on a quest (Annabeth.)

*whom both Clairisse and Annabeth were rejected by their godly parent in some way.

Hephaestus; god of forges and smith's. Who was rejected by his family and has found Annabeth (and Percy I personally think,) justified- all because she doesn't want to be like her mom.

Poisedon; god of the sea and earthquakes. A father who wants to be involved with his sons life- but can't. He can't because he came when Sally needed him and listened when she said, she wanted her son to know who he was before he knew who he was. A father who waited and has helped on the quest. Who hasn't abandoned his son- all to prove his son was innocent. Whose son doesn't have to prove his worth- because he already knows his worth.

Hades; god of the underworld. Who offered sanctuary to his nephew. Even though he had no idea why- except because Percy mentioned Kronos. The one who wanted to keep his children safe- so he moved them into a casino.

Troy Barnes is known as the funny, out of pocket, and immature one of his little study group. But because I’m insane and love to over complicate thing, here ya go.

He has said it was hard being popular in highschool, it’s canon (kinda..?) that he purposely dislocated both of his shoulders in a keg flip because of fear and pressure.

it’s canon his family beat him with a switch. if you don’t know what that is, it’s a a literal stick you get spanked and beat with.

Another scene that comes to my head is when levar burton comes to see him and Troy decides to curl up in a ball on the bathroom floor and gently rock himself back and forth while singing/sobbing.

he has a quite insecure nature about him that he hates. And not to much on how easy he cries. Bro literally grew up in a cult .

Along with other stuff I’m to lazy to write about rn.

so - obviously his life wasn’t perfect. I just want to know what else happened in his life. I would like to know more details and more stories of his shitty high school experience.

Was it a mistake?

People are now wondering if it was a mistake on Sumerians part — “Well someone at Sumerian is getting fired.”

Or was it on purpose?

People also wondered if they did it knowing people would then talk about it. Leaving it up for a full day before finally taking it down.

Primary thoughts on The Left Hand of Darkness

I've just finished Ursula K. Le Guin's The Left Hand of Darkness, which if you haven't read, I believe a spoiler alert is in order for this post.

After reading The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas and subsequently devouring the Earthsea Cycle, I have become an avid fan of Le Guin's work, both in fantasy and science fiction. Though I can't help but feel as if I am somehow late to the party in that regard.

This is not to be a full review of The Left Hand of Darkness, as I do believe in letting a book percolate on the brain before passing judgment; however, I do want to share some immediate thoughts.

By God, she can paint a whole society in few strokes. Both Karhide and Orgoreyn are as vivid to me as Venice or Austria (places I have yet to see, but have been related to me by friends and/or acquaintances). Grand cities, quiet villages, and the icy cold of the Gobrin Glacier are impressed upon the reader with the lightest of touches, never breaking the illusion and serving the characters as vivid backgrounds.

I found chapters 15-19 of particular interest. The rythym of the story seemed to change here, and Le Guin takes her time letting Estraven and Genly Ai crawl towards Karhide across the bitter wilderness. The time stretches for the reader as well as the characters, some scenes being repeated from both perspectives.

I believe in these chapters we are more dialed in to the characters' thoughts and feelings, peering closer and closer into the nature of their relationship during their journey. They formed a habit, a routine, monotonous and yet comforting in the simplicity of their mission.

Genly Ai describes how he feels about that time in this passage from the beginning of chapter 18:

"We are inside, the two of us, in shelter, at rest, at the center of all things. Outside, as always, lies the great darkness, the cold, death's solitude. In such fortunate moments as I fall asleep I know beyond doubt what the real center of my own life is, that time which is past and lost and yet is permanent, the enduring moment, the heart of warmth. I am not trying to say that I was happy, during those weeks of hauling a sledge across an ice-sheet in the dead of winter. I was hungry, overstrained, an often anxious, and it all got worse the longer it went on. I certainly wasn't happy. Happiness has to do with reason, and only reason earns it. What I was given was the thing you can't earn, and can't keep and often don't even recognize at the time; I mean joy."

Joy. Despite the pain, cold, and weariness Genly Ai describes a feeling of joy. What is the source of this joy? He doesn't exactly say. He deems this period in his life as the center, a theme that comes up in earlier chapters dealing with Gethenian mythos. The center of ones life, the center of time, etc.

Just before being rescued by Estraven he is trapped in a work/death camp in Orgoreyn, which he will surely remember as the worst time of his life, the most miserable. That is not deemed the center, or the most important. It's the warmth of the tent, the seclusion on the ice, and the forging of the companion-bond between he and his companion that Genly Ai cites as the center. A bond that is quickly (spoiler) broken when Estraven dies.

They are not romantically involved, nor sexually. They just work together, they survive together.

I think that extreme of a situation is not one that is easily come by for any reader. However, at least for myself there are a few memories that I could deem the "center" of my life as it stands today. These memories somewhat echo the experiences of Genly Ai and Estraven. One in particular was an afternoon spent alone with a friend before we parted after graduating from university. We cried, and lay in the sun in my empty dorm room until the sun drifted towards the horizon. I felt an intense bond to this person, and even today can picture that tiny room, the sunlight through the window, and the color of their eyes. I felt (at the time) that I was in the center of time. The center of my life.

In some later passages Genly Ai recalls specific details about Estraven's hair, or the smell of the tent that feel oddly familiar to how I experience memories that I've carried with me. Maybe I don't recall the conversations, but I'll remember certain details forever.

I'm not exactly sure how the comments/messages works on Tumblr.com yet, but please let me know your thoughts if you have any differing opinions or notes. I would love to discuss this book! Again, it's quite fresh to me so I am still settling on my opinions etc.
