atla idea thingy: imagine azula, ty lee and mai go to the north pole undercover as earth kingdom nobles to try and scope out the political situation, maybe for potential allyship, maybe to gather intel. they are understandably very upset to be quietly scorned and overlooked for being girls, used to some misogyny (bc no the fire nation is not a perfect feminist wonderland guys) but not to this blatant and stupid an extent of cutting their entire fighting force and pool of healers in half for tradition's sake. they're seething about how such a culture is being extended to the way they're being treated in their room when who comes along to greet the strange guests but princess yue.

she's intrigued by these strange girls, and the way they seem so put out by and scornful of the blatant ways they're being treated for being girls makes her wonder how it feels to live outside of the tradition she's always taken for granted. she keeps visiting them and slowly builds up a friendship. she shares how sometimes she wishes she could just stand up and refuse; refuse to marry hahn, refuse to stay silent while the men are talking, refuse to be made to be a total dependent, completely unable to defend herself should the situation arise.

the three girls decide to try and train her in hand-to-hand. at first they pretend to each other that it's just because having a princess who is confident and strikes back against the rigid pillars of their culture is sure to shake up the tribe's stability (having decided they do not want them as allies). but as time goes on, they're obviously just fond of yue and want to help their friend despite the circumstances shes stuck in.

yue slowly builds up confidence in herself in her defiance of tradition, but is unable to break down the wall of fear stopping her from doing so openly. that is, until she snaps one day, yelling in a council meeting that she won't take this anymore, she's not marrying hahn and she's not going to just sit back and be a good, silent, obedient little daughter.

she panics. there's uproar. immediately there are whispers about her being corrupted by the strange earth girls. in the dead of night, she sneaks to them, telling them they need to escape. of course, she never expected an offer for her to come with them.

they leave the north pole and travel across the world together on the girls' small ship, seeing the sights, having adventures, kicking the asses and taking the names of those who (probably) deserve it. yue gets to see more places than she'd ever hoped she could. azula gets a taste of rebelliousness, of just doing whatever the fuck she wants, her father be damned, and is hooked. mai finds that doing things she wants to do, things that were never expected - by others or her - with the girls she cares about helps push away that boredom more effectively and beautifully than anything. ty lee is overjoyed to make a name for herself and carve out a space in people's minds far from being her sisters' sister through some of their exploits (though being dubbed one of the four apparently terrifying 'pirate princesses' was never what she expected)

whoa i was just spitballing from a cool little idea about a dynamic that got lodged in my brain by a fic i just read earlier, then it turned into this. damn i really need to extract some juice from whichever part of my brain spat this out and try to synthesise it huh.

I have resolved my personal qualms with what happens to Aang by creating a debatably worse but less reprehensible solution

The question remains: in the Pirate!Azula au, where the hell is Toph. Like. Genuinely I don’t know what she’d be up to. I doubt she wants to be on a boat indefinitely especially a wooden one. Somehow I don’t see her staying in the North w/ Aang(‘s physical form) on all that snow and ice. Where do I put. What do.

Deleted Scene from Head Above Water

Two weeks.

That’s how much longer Hahn had to put up with spirit nonsense Yue and her peasant friends brought to the North. He considered throwing them out earlier but the council was unimanually against the idea. The Avatar still had to be train after all and his companions were not causing any trouble. On the contrary, they have been nothing but helpful.

Hahn sneered. Despite the constant surveillance, Yue still managed to worm her way into the heart of the people. All because of that spirit-touched freak she whored up with. Hahn’s concerns only deepen when the shaman confirmed the legitimacy of their marriage bond.

He needed to exposed both of them for what they truly were and win the people back to him. And he knew exactly when to do it.

 “I’m so nervous!” Aang wrung his hands. “What if I fail the bending exam and have to start all over?!”

“You’ve been practicing all winter. You’ll do fine.” Zuko reassured him.

“Do you really think that spineless so-called chief would let us stay even if you failed? He’ll probably overrule it so he can kick us out faster.” Sokka shrugged.

Aang whimpered and clutched his head.

“Not helping.” Zuko hissed at Sokka.

“What I mean is, there’s no reason to worry. I mean, it’s not like it’s the end of the world or something.”

Aang relaxed some. “Yeah, you’re right. It’s not the end of the world.”

“Not yet.” Zuko said.

This time Sokka glared at him. Thankfully, Aang didn’t hear as he ran further down path to the market place.

“So what’s the point of this again?” Sokka asked dryly.

“What you don’t have market places underwater?”

“Hoarding food in one place is a good way to attract predators. And there are some things even merfolk want to avoid.”

Zuko definitely did not want to know what. “There are other things to get at the market place.”

“What could possibly be more interesting than food-“ Sokka gasped dramatically when he saw a parka with an elaborate embroidery. “Look at the detail on this. The colors blend so well. And it fits just right!”

Zuko smirked and shook his head. They were supposed to be picking up some stuff for Yagoda while the girls had some alone time (Suki’s idea), but they could afford some hours of goofing off. It’s been a long hard winter and they’ve all earned it.

The hot springs were incredible. All three girls let out a content sigh after dipping in.

“Yue, why didn’t you tell us about this place sooner?” Suki moaned.

“I just found out earlier.”

“Well I’m glad you did.” Suki slipped in further. “Spirits my muscles needed this.”

Katara rubbed her feet. They no long ache as much and the sores had completely healed. Which was a good thing in itself but it also concerned her.

“I wonder how the boys are doing.” Katara thought out loud.

“I’m sure they’re fine. It’s the market place I’m more concerned about.” Yue joked causing the other to laugh.

“Speaking of boys.” Suki wiggled her eyebrows.

Both Yue and Katara groaned light heartedly.

“Can’t a girl be curious on what her best friends have been up to?”

“What about you Star Dust? You’ve been sneaking around a lot.”

“So have you and Zuko.”

Katara flushed. “We’re only training. Don’t change the subject.”

“Mmhmm.”

Yue giggled.

“Don’t think I forgot about you, Ms. Moon. So have you and Sokka seal the deal yet?”

Katara splashed Suki as Yue laughed even harder. “What is this an interrogation?!”

Chewing that part time pirate zuko... And also the fact that I'm obsessed with yuyan archer Mai. So here's the deal: after the war mai got to do whatever the fuck she wanted because she's one of the fire lord's best friends, who's going to stop her? So she goes to finally learn from the yuyan archers, doesn't take long bc 1. Zuko is surrounded by prodigies and 2. Have you SEEN mai's aim? She has the yuyan technique down in a week

The fire nation advisors are extremely worried about the fire lord at sea, and zuko sees mai, recently fully realized yuyan archer, and goes "she'll be my body guard so you people shut the fuck up". Sometimes mai takes her brother on the trips just because she can

(side note, i think the ship is metal solely so toph can be comfortably on board and still be able to navigate her way around)

Also, i forgot in my last ask, i was going to say that yue absolutely knows who zuko is, not just as fire lord, but as sokka's friend bc like... She's always trying to see where she can help the gaang, she saw when zuko joined and everything since, so when she sees zuko chasing pirates it's not just "oh I'm so bored look at that human trouble" but rather "oh I'm so bored oh wait i can help sokka's friend"

I'm undecided in whether aang is splitting hairs so to say about yue casually coming to the human world, or if he's out there acting as a yue lawyer trying to convince other great spirits to not give her grief but also not follow along on her idea bc... That would get messy very fast

Also. I love azula, i love that she's a menace, zuko leaves her in charge when he leaves and the fire nation advisors and ministers and the like are terrified of that. Azula loves it. She may also have implied she'll have zuko killed at sea (for the laughs and to see if anyone is not scared enough of that possibility. It's useful to know who wouldn't miss zuko to check if they're also actively treasonous). The gaang hears of this and they're extremely uncomfortable by the idea bc they're not sure if azula is being serious each time

honestly, just the threat of "azula is in charge" and she is chuckling in the bg. is like the biggest threat zuko could make. And all ambassadors, diplomat and council man are suddenly at their bestest behavior in a sense of " no fire lord please don't leave us we will do what ever you want"

its pointless though. zuko needs his brake and well. yeha he has mai and tom tom and just who ever wants to come along comes with. beating up criminals is a healthy and productive coping mechanism with stress i think.

I guess aang is splitting hair depending on with who he argues. if it is with humans, he just has a dead tired look in his eyes and just exhausted sighs out, "do i look like i control the moon?" like truly humans are so stupid? You think the avatar can tell a greater spirit anything?

on the other hand, when dealing with La, other greater spirits or Yue himself. he is like... trying to reason with them, which is just... very difficult and nerve wrecking because it's not like spirits do listen. they stay above him, and just want harmony and balance. but yue is for her convenience disturbing the balance. its like a partner therapy. and aang mediating between them. La thought the new yue would be different. and yue wasn't aware what she all signed up with. new compromises were created. aang: good thing i was able to convince yue and la to wait for your sacrifice sokka! sokka: .... my sacri-WHAT?!?!?

would you ever write an au where a member of the gaang besides aang is the avatar? if so, who would it be and what aspects of the story would you change or keep?

I don't know if I'll ever write this, but I had an idea for a fic where Yue was the Avatar. I think I already posted an outline for this, but I've put a little more thought into it.

Katara and Sokka head to the NWT looking to gather support for the SWT's war efforts (and to find someone to train Katara). I think they go directly there. They find the NWT closed off like in the show, but they get taken in because they are Chief Hakoda's children. It's essentially what happened in the show, except Yue is a waterbender, and Katara is sent off with her to have her learn to be a proper water tribe woman. They go off to the healing huts, and then Katara's face off with Pakku happens, but Yue pleads Katara's case saying that eventually she'll have to go home and wouldn't it be better if she could defend herself or something like that. Katara's connection with Kanna is discovered and Pakku agrees to train Katara (there will probably be more of an explanation of why Pakku's relationship with Kanna matters. I think Kanna was pregnant with Kya when she left and Pakku's world is rocked learning what happened to the daughter he never met).

The time line is more stretched out here, and Katara and Sokka are there for a few months. Katara learns more about her grandmother's time there from Pakku and Yugoda. Sokka and Yue have a romance, but she's still betrothed, so it's secret and angsty and all that good stuff. Six months in, Katara is a master, and Sokka and Yue are trying to figure out what to do. A pirate ship turns up, and Captain Lee and his first mate Mushi come to warn the NWT that the Fire Nation is preparing to attack. No one believes them until the ash starts falling. The fire nation attacks, and it's discovered that Yue is the Avatar. The FN soldiers are beaten- mostly killed, but a few get away. Katara is furious with Pakku and Arnook, and the NWT in general for hiding this. She makes a big speech about how the world needs the Avatar and eveyone is fighting and dying and trying to stop the FN from destroying the world, but they were keeping the one person who could change the tide hidden out of selfishness. She and Sokka are, of course, kicked out. Lee and Mushi offer them passage on their ship. Sokka goes to say goodbye to Yue and she asks him to stay, and that she thought she could convince her father to let her marry him instead. He tells her he needs to go help his people fight. They kiss and Sokka and Katara prepare to leaved. The next day, as they're waiting for Captain Lee to send a row boat for them, Yue appears, bag in hand and tells them that she was tired of hiding and she wants to do her duty as Avatar, starting with mastering more waterbending than healing. She tells them that her father agreed, and they all leave with Captain Lee.

There's friction with Katara and Lee immediately. She thinks he's hiding something. He thinks she's a busybody who doesn't know when to stop prying. But, they work well together, and a friendship develops over their travels. Katara helps Yue master waterbending, and then they set off in search of an earthbending master. That's when they find out that Yue lied. Her father is furious and sending people to bring her home, and to bring Katara and Sokka back to face kidnapping charges. The Fire Nation now also knows that Yue is the Avatar, and send Azula to find her. Everyone converges on the group at once, and that's how it's discovered that Captain Lee is the disgraced Prince Zuko.

That's it. That's as far as I got. I don't know if this fic will ever see the light of day, but if I were going to do a non-Aang Avatar, this would be it.
