Zay and Ren's big argument :
> full scene written under the "keep reading" button !
Tumblr media
> Happens a long time after the nexus events, it's been around 5 months they've been together.

_________________________________________
“What about that movie ?” Zay slouched over the kitchen table, showing his phone to Leo in front of him.
Leo glanced quickly “we already watched it”
Zay backs up in his chair, doubtful. “Uh ? Really ?”
They were looking for a movie to watch together and for the last thirty minutes they couldn't agree on one. Ren was waiting for them at the door, the others already waiting in the living room.
“You don't remember ?” Leo raises an eyebrow “it was that time you brought us into the theater when you were still human” Leo laughs.
Suddenly, time has stopped.
Did Leo really say that ? Did.. Ren heard ?
Zay can't turn his face towards Ren, fearing his reaction.
“we even almost got caught when Raph ruined two seats with his shell” Leo keeps going, without noticing the sudden atmosphere’s change.
Ren took his back off the wall. He's standing in the door frame, holding his breath. A shiver running down his neck. His throat is suddenly sharp, like any word coming out of his mouth would cut his tongue. Should he say something ? Maybe he's wrong and didn't hear right.
Zay couldn't hold it anymore and dared to glance over Ren. His inside onsets by that simple innocent look.
“What ?” Ren throws sharply
Zay gets up from his chair, walking slowly towards his boyfriend. Ren's muscles tense, he locks his jaw trying to contain his anger.
“Ren, please. It's not that simple..” Zay says with a soft voice.
“You were human ?” Ren manages to get the words out of his mouth. He is disgusted by only thinking that this statement could be true.
“Yes, but -”
“And when were you planning to tell me ?!” he shouts, his anger can't be contained anymore. Zay's steps abruptly stopped.
That icky feeling behind Ren's neck gets more intense. He feels betrayed. How could he hide something like that from him? Especially when Zay knows what he had to deal with humans before and what he thinks about them.
Leo stands up from his chair. He doesn't like how this is going. He wishes to help but he also knows that Zay probably won't appreciate it if he steps in. All he wants is to protect him, but he also respects that  Zay tends to want to fight his own battles. He catches zay's eyes, silently offering his help : hey, i'm here with you, just lemme know.
Zay waves him off subtly by facing Ren again.
“I thought about telling you, but you can see why I didn't ?” Zay's eyes become watery but he tries to keep it inside. He can't cry, not now.
He always dreaded this discussion, fearing the outcome. But Ren should know better than anyone else that he's nothing like the humans he met before.. right ?
Ren can't think of that coming from his boyfriend. He is kind and attentive, and always takes such good care of him and his family. It's not even his real family, and he cares about them so much. He sees it.
But
What if it explains why he fought in the battle nexus ? Maybe it was his human side that needed to be unleashed. He always enjoyed fighting, like those humans that tried to get him.
Humans are bad.
But, is Zay bad too ?
“So.. you weren't even planning on telling me at all ?” Ren says as he realizes
Zay looks away, nervous. He's scared where this will go. He doesn't want to lose Ren. Not over something so stupid.
“You told me that you hated humans when we started dating, what did you want me to do ?” he breathes out.
All kinds of thoughts start running inside Ren's head. He can't think anything bad about Zay. He couldn't dare to imagine Zay wanting to hurt him. But why does he feel like that ?
Leo comes closer to them, still wondering if he should step in. He can clearly see his brother about to break at any moment now. He can't let such a guy hurt Zay like that. Not in front of him. But he has to play it smart, he needs to calm everyone down.
“Come on, let's just take it easy and talk about it” Leo tries to appease the atmosphere, touching each other's shoulders.
Ren startled at Leo's touch and abruptly removed his hand from his fur.
“Don't touch me !!” Ren shouts
He shouldn't have come here, it's too dangerous. Why did he trust him ?
He should've stayed in the Hidden City. He always promised himself that, why did he have to step aside from it ? Why did he have to.. fall in love ?
Zay comes in between Leo and Ren, his arms wrapping around his brother. He's protecting him.
“Ren, I know what your deal with humans is but that doesn't mean they're all the same. I got mutated by a crazy yokai, that doesn't mean I hate all yokais.”
Ren pests. What could Zay possibly know ? He saw all those humans looking at him that day when he came to the surface. Maybe even Zay was one of them.
Leo, still behind Zay, moves away. He doesn't need any protection. Especially not from that jerk. Zay must've felt Leo move because he lands his hand on his plastron, preventing him from stepping in again.
“Should've I hated you too ?” Zay says softly.
Ren swallows hard. He could never imagine Zay to hate him. It feels more icky than Zay lying to him this whole time.
“So now.. do you hate me too ?” Zay's voice breaks.
“No, Zay, I don't- I can't hate you-” words struggle to make their way.
“Then say it.” Zay's eyes are pleading “say that you still love me”
And yet.
“I…” Ren looks up, he can't stare at Zay anymore. “I need to go”
He bypasses Zay and grabs his jacket on the back of the chair.
“What ?” Zay is taken by surprise. Is he really about to leave ?!
Ren doesn't answer and just avoids eye contact by looking down, trying to pass next to Zay again. But the turtle blocks the way.
“You can't leave like that !” Zay grabs Ren's wrist, making sure he won't go anywhere before this conversation is over.
But Ren quickly removes his hand before Zay could lock his grip. Zay observes his sudden reaction. Ren curls on himself, holding his wrist close to him. Is he scared of him ?
“I'm... nothing human anymore..” Zay lower his head, playing nervously with his hands “and you don't even know how fucking hard it was to accept that.”
Ren begins to consider Zay's situation. It's all new to him. Not only did he lie about being human, but he hid all this part of his life. He wished to know that side of him sooner. Maybe it would've gone differently..
“You can stay away from humans, but I have to see my face everyday.” Zay frowns “I'm not saying that your trauma is nothing compared to mine, I always considered you Ren. But.. I never expected you to think so little of me..”
Ren's heart is being torn apart. Everything he believed in was wrong. And Zay might have gotten hurt because of that. Now to think of it, all he said about humans… damn it, Zay.. why did I say those things ?
“I'm sorry I didn't tell you Ren.. I was just– scared to lose you..” a single tear fell down his cheek, silently.
Ren sighs, his hand reaches Zay's cheek. He gently swipes his tears. This single gesture feels like Zay was finally able to breathe after coming back to the surface. Like a sweet salvation. Zay closes his eyes to his touch, feeling alive again, feeling at home. It's warm and comforting. It's simple and yet filled with so many meanings.
But eventually, Ren removes his hand, cutting short the warm feeling wrapping his heart. Zay opens his eyes again, seeing his boyfriend shyly smile. No word comes out. Zay sends an subtle interrogative look.
The deer Yokai walks past Zay silently, and stands at the kitchen door. Zay starts to come closer, feeling like he shouldn't let Ren go.
“I.. still need time to think about it. I'm sorry Zay”
Ren disappears from the door frame and Zay calls for him. He can't go, he can't leave him.
Leo stands in front of Zay, to prevent him from following Ren. Leo obviously doesn't understand why Ren would act like that simply because Zay was human. But from what he heard it's still something that matters to him.
“Please, stay here. Going after him won't be any good for now. Give you some time” Leo gently sets down his hands over Zay's shoulders.
“He hates me” Zay tears down
“No he doesn't, he just needs time, Zay..” Leo brings his brother into a warm hug.
Zay let everything out, his tears falling down his face. Leo gently settles his hand on Zay's head to bring him even closer.

Say what you need to say about Taylor and All Too Well... Don't be shy ahah
For reference, this is regards to this post by @cages-boxes-hunters-foxes
While I personally hate the implication that older fans are automatically better, I think there are certain things that older fans will appreciate in different ways than newer fans will and honestly? The glow up of Taylor realising just how loved her non singles are is one of those things. I recognise that we now live in an era where Taylor understands just how much we love songs like Cruel Summer and even played August (as part of the grammys mashup), IDSB and Betty live at award shows because of that, but that wasn't always the case. Those of us who have been here long enough can still joke about the “surprise” song on the 1989 tour being 15 nearly every night and the fact she shouldn't have been shocked on the Reputation tour that we knew and wanted lesser known songs played on tour. But that doesn't change that she genuinely was surprised, and to be honest, I think to some level she still is given how moved she is that her rerecordings are doing so well. And while I know Taylor and many others have pinpointed the Reputation tour as the defining moment that she realised, I genuinely think All Too Well was what got the ball rolling to come to that realisation.
To me, the context of 2012 is important in seeing why she's so moved. Though RED was not a failure/flop in any sense, it was definitely her most divisive album both in and out of the fandom at the time. It was the height of the “Taylor Swift is the problem/can't keep a man” hate where I lived and unlike Speak Now which was generally forgotten by the public but adored by the fandom, many fans I knew saw RED as Taylor selling out. Like it may be a hot take, but I really do not believe RED got the fair shot it deserved until the rerecord came out. I also think the perfect storm of the mixed reaction, it not winning AOTY, her own insecurities (mostly related to the topics covered in The Lucky One and Nothing New) and how well 1989 was received is a big reason that Taylor saw it as patchworky and not as refined as Fearless or 1989 despite it always having perfectly represented what it was meant to in my honest opinion.
But regardless of the reasons, Taylor was of the belief that people only wanted to hear her singles... until the fans kept pestering her to sing All Too Well at the grammys. And she did. I think @cowboylikedean said it best when zay said that that was the ultimate love letter for us at the time. And though Taylor didn't win the AOTY grammy, it also started changing the tides for the locals (at least around me) in terms of seeing her as a serious songwriter. And sure, it's annoying that people don't appreciate the art of creating a pop song because I can genuinely say that I think IKYWT is just as impressive as ATW in its own ways, but it was something. And I'm sure that for someone who has admitted numerous times that she wanted the general public's affection, it was a big moment for Taylor, and again, it's my belief that it was the moment that started her recognition of just how much we and the general public love all of her work, not just her singles and definitely not just the catchy pop songs. As she herself said, we changed that song for her, and I don't think she just means in the way that she can sing it without crying now because she has a positive experience with it from touring (which, as a side note, with how long we now know they were on/off for, really put that in a new light for me). I truly think it changed her mindset on how she approaches albums, touring and even single choices.
And now here we are a decade later, and after years of fans once again pestering her about that same non single, this time about the 10 minute version she mentioned once, she decided to put that on the rerecording of RED. And just like the original did, the 10 minute version of ATW really changed the tide on how people perceived both her and more specifically RED. That same album that was subject to “Well at least she knows she's the issue if she's writing IKYWT” jokes and criticism of selling out and “scamming” the system by being both pop and country is now being heralded as the incredible representation of a toxic on/off again relationship between a girl and much older man that it is. And while yes, every piece needed to be there to make that happen, it cannot be denied that ATW10MV played a massive role in that, especially in terms of the general public given its relevance to social commentary over the last year. Also, while I don't want to undercut any of her other albums and am certainly still upset that she was forced to rerecord her albums, as someone who went from a casual fan to a stan upon hearing RED and like really realised then that I'd be a fan forever, I think I will always be both emotional and grateful for this second chance that RED got to shine as the masterpiece it should have been seen as the first time, and will always be appreciative of the role ATW played in that.
So yeah, I just think that on top of Taylor's amazing trait of not taking anything for granted in general, she, like the rest of us who were around in 2012, got to see how this song not only got to have so many different lives and meanings on its own, but also gave those lives to RED and her career in general. And I imagine that having seen an album that she really put her heart on her sleeve go from being chewed up and spat out by so many people to finally given its dues and knowing that a not insignificant part of that came from ATW really does make it emotional and moving for her and I'm just so happy that both her and I got to live to see the day where that could happen.

chapter 1: a new face
Tumblr media
*Outside of Topanga's * (A/N: This will be set the day before their first day of Freshman year)
"You can do this. Just breathe." I say to myself before entering my Mom's Cafe. Once inside, there are three faces that I recognize and three unfamiliar ones- two boys and a girl. I look to the counter to see my mother and Ms.Hart. Then I turn and say hello to the Six Musketeers.
"Hi, I'm Maxine- Max for short. I'm Riley's twin sister." I say to the group of people I don't know, waving slightly. I get a few different reactions. From Maya and Farkle, I get complete joy and happiness. From the three strangers, I get surprise and maybe shock. Then from Riley, I get disgust- which does not amaze me one bit.
"Hi, I'm Lucas. This is Smackle and Zay." He says while pointing at himself and the two others.
"Nice to meet you." I say smiling at the boy.
Riley scoffs, turns to our mother, and asks, "Why is she back?"
"Riley Mathews! That is no way to speak to your sister!"
"It's a valid question. I thought she was sent away for a reason."
"We will talk about this at home." My mom says sternly. Tears prick my eyes as I turn and walk right back out. I won't listen to this. To her.
*Lucas's POV*
After Max walks out I face Farkle and ask, "Riley has a twin sister?"
"Yeah, she was sent to live with her grandparents and her Uncle Josh."
"Why?" I ask him, confused. I had never heard of her before- Riley never talked about her.
"Why don't you ask her yourself." I nod and follow Max outside.
*Max's POV*
I sit on the stairs near the cafe and clench my hands and jaw to prevent myself from crying. This is why I left. Riley has always made those comments. She has always acted like I was this disease. Like I wasn't even her sister. Then I feel a presence next to me, making me turn my head.
"Hey, you ok?"
"Ha, no."
"Wanna talk about it?"
"Not really." I say, not meeting his greenish/ hazel orbs.
"That's ok. When you're ready, you're ready. I won't force you."
"Thank you, Lucas."
"Of course, Maxine." I go to correct him, but for some reason I don't.
"Where are you from?"
"Texas, Ma'm." He says with a tip of an imaginary hat- successfully making me blush.
"Nice." I say, the heat in my face subsiding.
"What about you?"
"I'm from here but I was sent to live with my Dad's family in 4th grade, so about six years ago."
"Can I ask why?"
"If I tell you that, I have to tell you why I walked out of the cafe."
"Oh, so tell me when you're ready then."
"I will. I promise." I say with utmost sincerity.
"This may be weird, but I'm happy I met you."
"It's not weird. I'm happy I met you too, Lucas." I say with a smile on my face.
Lucas and I talked all night. We got to know each other, we told each other the secrets we kept to ourselves, we shared our hopes and dreams, and maybe just maybe we began to fall in love- of course we didn't know it then,  but it was defiantly a possibility.

AMBITION “Living Memory” [ 4.11 ]♮PART 1, half 1
RECAP
Over the shot of Isa and Farkle finally, finally having their first kiss:
Josh, voiceover: Previously, on AMBITION…
Last episode alone was a rush of major, life-changing moments -- violations of autonomy (with Justin’s forceful moves on Maya); hail Mary auditions (Vanessa), and the dawn of profound realizations (cue Zay staring at Charlie and suddenly no longer able to run from the truth that he has been, and remains, so irrevocably in love with him). Relationships erupting into excited, bright new starts -- if you’re Isa & Farkle -- while others crumble into resigned, quiet surrender.
Vanessa: Who does it help to pretend like that isn’t how things are? Who are we protecting? The only people we’re going to hurt are ourselves -- and it’s not fair, Zay. To me, or to you. [ with a shaky breath ] So what are we doing?
For every unspoken epiphany, however, there was an equally volcanic confession. Nigel informed his family of his desire to leave NYU and potentially transfer overseas to a less-than-enthusiastic reception…
Nigel: Hell, when I talked about Zay going out for all these touring auditions and stuff, you said it was cool. You said you hoped it worked out for him. Why is it great when he does it, but when I want to try for something more it’s -- Liezel, frazzled: You are not Zay Babineaux!
And Charlie managed to defy even that, finally revealing his true identity to his mother with predictable, yet still tragic, results.
Charlie, desperate: Mom, this isn’t -- I’m still me! I’m still your son -- Eleanor: Don’t say that to me! Stop lying!
In spite of all that, there was some levity… of a sort, as Yindra took an unconventional and truly wild boat ride for the weekend in the aim of making it into the coveted, elite girl group being developed by Jupiter Records. Although she gave it her all, it’s a wonder what might happen next, considering the experience itself -- full of panic attacks, smashed bottles, and catty gossip -- left little insight as to what might happen next. Hollywood might just prove to be more unpredictable than Adams Academy.
Kimmy: Stop, y’all. We’re women supporting women…
Somehow, all of this chaos -- new career moves, new betrayals, and the hard launch of romances new and long-thought-passed -- happened amidst the true universal centerpiece of life and death. For every start, there is an end, and Kenneth Friar finally met his after a long, tiring, and emotionally complex wait. How Lucas and Grace move forward in the aftermath, carrying all that mixed grief, remains to be seen.
Charlie: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil…”
It’s the circle of life, and as our curtain rises on another episode, it begins again. Every action has an equal opposite reaction; every closed door invites another one to open. What gentle ends and potential new starts await us next -- and what ones came before that brought us to this moment of time in the first place?
If AMBITION has shown us anything so far, it’s that there’s certainly a story beneath every stone just waiting to be turned and told… so as autumn leaves fall in our world and new ones grow in theirs…
Yeah I’ll be singing Hallelujah, whether you like it or not!
End of recap.
INT. L.A. APARTMENT - FARKLE’S BEDROOM - DAY
Sunlight filters in through the curtains, casting the room in a warm glow. It’s still early, so FARKLE MINKUS and ISA DE LA CRUZ have yet to get out of bed.
Even when Isa starts to stir, they’re not in any rush to get moving. They let their eyes flutter open and roll onto their back, looking up at the unfamiliar ceiling. For a long moment, confusion reigns -- where are they again? What are they wearing? How did they end up here?
Then they turn their head to look at Farkle, and it all comes back in an instant.
The letter in a well-worn shared novel. The confessions; the unexpected and new forms of expression. The stuff they did with him -- with their best friend -- that they never believed could happen in real life.
But it did. Somehow, they ended up in bed with Farkle, and based on the fond expression on their face, they wouldn’t change that fact for anything.
He’s still sleeping peacefully, and Isa has no intention of waking him. They’re still drowsy themselves, and have half a mind to just drift back to sleep. They figure they’ll quick check their phone, see the time, and then disappear back into the blissful calm for a little while longer.
The peace doesn’t last.
Upon looking at their phone, Isa discovers they have missed texts. Quite a few, in fact -- one from Dylan, two from Riley. Several from Eric. As soon as they open them and read the messages, they’re wide awake.
Isa: Holy shit.
They sit upright, immediately dialing a number. When someone picks up on the other end, they forget to stay quiet, speaking at full volume and startling Farkle awake next to them.
Isa: Riley? I just saw your texts -- what the fuck is --
Whatever she says on the other end of the line, it leaves Isa gobsmacked. Not that the news is surprising -- they all knew it was coming -- yet it still lands like a bomb anyway. Isa climbs out of bed and gets to their feet, pacing the floor as they listen. Farkle pushes himself upright, still half-asleep but obviously concerned by their behavior.
Farkle: What’s wrong? Is everything -- Isa: [ to Riley ] So he’s dead. [ meeting Farkle’s eyes ] He’s really dead.
Farkle’s eyes widen, matching their somber expression.
INT. L.A. APARTMENT - LATER - DAY
Isa is getting ready to go in a rush, Farkle helping them gather their things. Everything is frantic, neither of them having a second to breathe.
Farkle: The car will get you to Burbank. Do you need me to help with a flight, or -- ? Isa: No. No, uh, Zachary said he’d arrange the plane for me. Since it’s an emergency. Farkle: Okay, good. That’s good.
But they’ve got to go. Like now. It already feels like they’re days late. Farkle zips up Isa’s suitcase and helps carry it to the door where they’re slipping on their backpack.
Farkle: Well, okay, um, text me when you get on the plane. And when you land. Isa: I will. Farkle: And tell Lucas -- well, I feel for him. Let them know if there’s anything I can do -- Isa: Yeah. Yeah, will do.
Isa starts to head out the door, so distracted they don’t even think to say goodbye. Then they seem to remember something, viscerally, doubling back before Farkle shuts the door.
Isa: Wait, wait -- !
Farkle hears them just in time, giving them enough of a chance to slip back through the doorway and pull him into a kiss. Somewhat a goodbye, somewhat a reassurance; a desperate grasp for comfort in the midst of new chaos.
When they pull apart, Isa offers a hasty promise.
Isa: Talk to you later.
Farkle nods, managing a smile in spite of the confusion.
Then Isa is gone, shutting the door behind them. Farkle blankly follows a couple of steps after them, gently pressing his fingers to the cold surface of the door.
He sighs and spins to lean back against it, left in a total daze.
EXT. BURBANK AIRPORT - APRON - DAY
Isa jogs to board the small private jet waiting on the tarmac, the engine humming loudly.
INT. MACNAMARA PLANE - CABIN - DAY
They collapse into their seat, already exhausted, as the pilot informs them they’ll be taking off shortly. Isa goes to buckle their seatbelt and then pulls out their phone, shooting a text to their group chat with Dylan and Riley that they’ll be there ASAP.
It’s only once they’ve begun taxiing that Isa realizes one little detail about their current attire -- they’re still wearing Farkle’s sweater from the night before. Oops.
Pilot, off-screen: All passengers, please prepare for take-off. We’re all clear for departure.
Too late to change now… and honestly, it seems like Isa might find just a bit of comfort in that. They cross their arms and hug themselves lightly, looking out the window at the glaringly blue Los Angeles sky.
EXT. NEW YORK STREETS - DAY
Not so in New York, where an overcast sky paints the city dismally grey even at sunset. A light drizzle leaves a shimmer on the concrete jungle, making it all feel even more monochromatic.
INT. CHARLIE’S APARTMENT - DAY
On the television, a local weather report notes that the cloudy, rainy weather is set to hang overhead for the next couple of weeks.
But no one is paying much attention to the television. CHARLIE GARDNER is half-eyeing it, but he’s more so listening to RILEY MATTHEWS converse quietly with ASHER GARCIA and DYLAN ORLANDO, who finally made it down from Rochester in the last few hours. When there’s an urgent knock at the door, Charlie is the one to answer it.
Isa is on the other side, still loaded down with their bags as they came straight from the airport. Charlie exchanges a weak smile with them and offers to get their things off their hands, giving Isa the chance to greet the others.
They don’t say much -- what is there to say -- but Isa does accept a tight hug from Dylan. When they let go, he does hesitate on their new yet vaguely familiar sweater, but opts not to comment.
Isa breaks the quiet first, glancing around to make sure they’re not missing the obvious before asking what’s on their mind.
Isa: Is he here?
EXT. CHARLIE’S APARTMENT - FIRE ESCAPE - DAY
LUCAS JAMES FRIAR is alone, hiding out on the cramped fire escape outside their apartment even with the drizzle. He has his arms wrapped around his knees, pulled in close on himself. His expression is blank, empty, which is almost more telling than if he seemed outright emotional.
Moments later, the window creaks open. Lucas doesn’t move as Isa climbs onto the fire escape to join him, settling down across from him and mirroring his posture.
He doesn’t acknowledge them. They don’t expect him to. They don’t need to say anything -- they used to do this routine all the time, back in the day. The quiet is fine.
They’re there. That’s what matters. And right now, after what’s just happened, it matters more than ever.
EXT. NEW YORK STREETS - DAY
A newspaper lands backside up on the doorstep of a home in the Quincy High neighborhood, already smudging slightly from the rain. The bottom right corner of the visible page becomes our focus, as we ease to get a better look.
The obituaries. There, prominently featured, is a black and white photograph of Kenneth Friar.
Community mourns a beloved coach, teacher, and father Kenneth James Friar 1981 - 2022
The rain starts to pick up, splattering on the paper and causing the ink to run. As Kenneth’s image starts to blur and blend, a distant drum line picks up… then it grows more prominent, as if it’s marching closer…
EXT. TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL - FOOTBALL FIELD - FLASHBACK - NIGHT
That’s because it basically is -- marching, that is.
Song Cue ♫ ♪ “Tusk” as performed by USC Trojan Marching Band || Instrumental
We’ve been transported back in time, smack dab into the middle of a high energy, high enthusiasm football game. Bleacher stands are packed on both sides; the high school marching band is getting folks hype. Cheerleaders are hollering and doing their choreography, with frenzied pom-pom movements and cheerful chants that the people in the stands echo. The outfits are delightfully mid-90s, and there is no rain in the sky here.
Suffice to say, it’s a far cry from the arts-centric, modern world of Adams we’ve grown used to.
That being said, it doesn’t seem like everyone’s cup of tea there either. In the shadows of the bleachers, a girl watches uncertainly, hovering just out of sight and getting a good look at the crowds without letting herself be seen. She’s petite, with ash blond hair plaited over her shoulder and a shy disposition. The whole scene seems just a bit too loud, too overwhelming for her. While she’s got on a cute sundress, you can hardly tell, as she’s hidden behind an oversized denim jacket that she’s practically swimming in.
It’s a younger Grace Friar, or as she was once known, GRACE KINSLEY (16). And before she was stuck in New York, living the non-life she is now, she was a teenager just like our mains.
The game continues out on the field, giving the cheerleaders the chance to reset and grab some water. This is when one of them catches Grace lingering by the bleachers, brightening and grabbing her attention with a wave. She enthusiastically gestures her over to the fence, and after a moment, Grace reluctantly leaves the sidelines and comes to meet her.
The cheerleader who greets her is full of bubbly charm, tall even as a teenager with a twinkle of mischief in her eyes. She has deep red hair, as fiery as her personality, only tamed right now by necessity into a tight ponytail. Her grin makes up for it, though. This is RACHEL MCGUIRE (16).
She bounces on her feet as Grace approaches, reaching over the chainlink to give her a hug once she reaches the fence.
Rachel: You came! I can’t believe it. Grace: Yes, against my better judgment. Rachel: Oh, wah wah. You are so prosaic. Grace: Did you just pick that one up from the thesaurus today? I don’t think you’re using it right. Rachel: Maaaybe. But whatever, I’m just so glad you’re here! Isn’t it fun? Don’t you just love the energy? Grace: It is… something. All right.
Rachel rolls her eyes. Even if she isn’t going to convert her best friend to the wonderful ways of school spirit, she got her to come to at least one game this year, so she’ll consider that a win.
Rachel: And you’re coming to the party, right? It’s going to be so crunk.
Grace wrinkles her nose. That sounds like the last thing she’d rather do… this scene is already raucous enough. But Rachel senses her hesitation and before she can even say no, the redhead gives her a signature pout, signaling she’s not going to let this drop.
Rachel: Come on, please? Just once. For me. Grace: I don’t know… Rachel: Just for an hour. For thirty minutes. Hell, if you walk in and last five minutes, I swear I will stop asking to copy your English homework. [ taking her hands ] Gracie, it’s our junior year. I want you to experience one party before we graduate and become decrepit old people. Cheerleader: Rachel, come on! We need to get ready for the pyramid! Rachel: Lay off, Jessica! [ back to Grace ] Pleeease?
Well… when she looks at her like that, how can she say no? Grace’s turn to roll her eyes, but she can’t help but smile as she caves and agrees. Rachel jumps with glee and claps their hands together.
When Rachel turns to focus back on her squadmates, something catches her eye on the field.
A couple of football players are looking at them. Two of the cute seniors, the taller of whom is definitely eyeing Grace behind her.
Delightful. Rachel’s eyes widen with excitement, and she leans back to get Grace’s attention again.
Rachel: Gracie. That guy is totally looking at you. Grace: Huh? [ with a slight frown ] Shut up. No he isn’t. Rachel: Yes he so is. I saw it. Oh my God, imagine, you come to your first football game and walk away with suitors? Talk about proving me right that you need to get out more often. Grace: No -- that’s not -- shut up. [ crossing her arms ] They’re not even looking over here. He’s looking at the game. Rachel: The game is on time-out. And he was definitely looking at you. Grace: Doubtful. Maybe he thought I was someone else. Rachel: Is it so impossible to believe that -- Jessica: Rachel!
God, Jessica, could you chillax! Rachel groans, telling Grace they’ll pick this back up later. Grace seems grateful for the escape, gesturing Rachel on her way. She does a little mocking pom-pom move.
Grace: Stay balanced.
Rachel sticks her tongue out at her, then jogs to go join the other cheerleaders. Grace hangs by the fence for a moment longer, taking in the hectic scenery all around her… certainly more her best friend’s domain than her own…
And then she sees it, too. When she looks towards the field at the players, as they get ready for their next play, the left tackle on their team glances in her direction -- and seems to look directly at her.
She doesn’t know him. He doesn’t know her. But his blue eyes are like lightning, even all the way from there… and when he smiles slightly a second later, thunder rattles Grace’s bones.
Well, that’s enough being present and seen for one night. If only that was all. Grace whips around and makes a beeline back for the bleachers, a flush rising up her cheeks. She glances back over her shoulder only once the next play has started and there’s no chance he’ll still be looking at her.
In the rush of movement, all she can make out is the bright white “F” starting the lettering on the back of his football jersey.
Then he blocks an offense maneuver from the opposing team, and the crowd in the stands goes nuts around her, totally dominating the soundscape. The horns of “Tusk” blare loudly --
INT. HOUSE PARTY - FLASHBACK - NIGHT
And become the opening notes of an iconic party banger, playing through the tinny speakers available to the high school teens of the nineties.
Song Cue ♫ ♪ “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” as performed by Cyndi Lauper || Instrumental
The mood is jubilant at the afterparty for the game, as it appears the home team carried victory. At least, that’s the impression you get as you watch the crowd of players hoot and chant for each other in the living room and chug down celebratory cans of beer.
At the same time, the cheerleaders are having a toast of their own, all raising their red solo cups and taking a shot of whatever their vodka of choice is. Rachel has dragged Grace into this circle as well, who dutifully sips her red solo cup along with the rest but with markedly less confidence.
Once the group disperses a bit, Rachel turns back to her friend and reemphasizes how glad she is that she decided to come out for once. She’s now let her cheer ponytail down and is fluffing out her hair, which looks even more vibrant red in the mood lighting of the party. Instinctively, she reaches out and starts to affectionately nitpick Grace’s hair too.
Grace: Don’t waste your effort. I’m never going to look like you. Rachel: You’re right. That is, I could never be as effortlessly adorable as you are.
She gives Grace a boop on the nose.
Grace: Okay, so, you’re already clearly drunk. Rachel: Am not. Not all of us are lightweights like you. I just happen to know what I’m talking about, which is that you are beautiful and smart and now that you’ve escaped your self-inflicted dungeon of imprisonment -- Grace: I don’t think being an introvert is -- Rachel: The whole world is going to see it too.
Rachel nudges Grace into taking off her armor of denim, allowing her cute dress to see the light of day. She helps her tie the jacket around her waist.
Grace: Maybe, but I’m not sure that’ll do much to cover up the whole… being boring and smelling like hay because I live on a farm thing. Rachel: All part of the allure. [ off her head shake ] I mean, mister left tackle certainly already noticed…
Oh, not this again… Grace grows more shy, pushing some stray hair behind her ear.
Grace: Again, you’re exaggerating. Rachel: Am not. Grace: Why would he even -- he was probably looking at you. You were right in front of me. We don’t even know each other. Rachel: As if that matters? In this case, it really doesn’t. He doesn’t know most people. He’s that senior that transferred over from Claremont. Which is good, because our last left tackle was so shit. But anyway, knowing someone or not does not preclude one from wanting to know someone. Which he does. Want to know you. Grace: How could you possibly know that? Rachel: Because I know things. Because I’ve had three boyfriends, and they all have to start somewhere. [ glancing over her shoulder ] And because he’s looking our way right now.
Rachel’s smile is downright overjoyed. Grace frowns and looks over her shoulder.
She wasn’t lying. The left tackle from earlier is chatting with the quarterback and another player, easy smile on his face… and he keeps glancing over at them.
At her.
Grace whips back around, all levity gone from her expression.
Grace: Oh my God. Rachel: I told you. I told you! Grace: Shut up. Shut up. It’s not -- they’re just looking. It’s not like… it’s not like he’s over here. Rachel: True… for now.
Rachel’s smile widens. She nonchalantly pushes away from the counter and traipses her way towards the boys, Grace watching her in mild horror.
Grace: [ in a whisper ] Rach. Rachel! Come back!
Rachel tosses her a wink over her shoulder, then flips her hair to prime volume as she saunters over to join the footballers. She begins to chat up the quarterback, complimenting him on the excellent win…
And giving mister left tackle a wide open playing field. Grace curses to herself and spins back to face the drinks on the counter, no clue what to do with herself. He probably won’t come over here. Why would he? Rachel is right in front of him now -- he’ll probably become enamored with her. Most men do. Plus, it would be a lot of effort to walk over here and talk up a wallflower. She’s worrying over nothing.
Even so, she feels compelled to seek out some courage. Grace reaches for the vodka bottle and quickly pours herself another shot, downing it compulsively before she can regret it.
Lo and behold, Rachel was right on the money. Grace swallows the liquor and grimaces at the burn in her throat, but she pulls herself back together right before another figure comes over to join her.
Left Tackle: Not bad. Don’t think I could down one of those that fast. Willing to pour me one, and we’ll find out?
Grace braves meeting his eyes, getting a better look at him. And boy, once she does, it is hard to look away. He was striking across the field, but he’s absolutely mesmerizing up close. Tall, well-muscled, with sun-kissed skin and sandy blonde hair. It’s clean cut on the sides but a bit longer on top, Freddie Prinze Jr. style, now fully visible without the football helmet.
Then there’s the eyes. Oh, those eyes.
Grace clears her throat, then does a little shrug. Somehow, she manages to come off coy, despite how her knees feel like jelly.
Grace: I don’t know. Probably not a good idea. I don’t want to be responsible for taking down our prized new left tackle.
He laughs, and the sound makes Grace crack a smile without even trying. And if that wasn’t enough, his smile is absolutely killer.
Left Tackle: Damn, if I’m going to be taken down by the cute little thing by the bar, I think my football career is in trouble. The offense on the other team ain’t got nothin’ on you, huh?
Grace shrugs again, figuring saying nothing is wiser than whatever stupid stuff might come out of her mouth. She’s never been great with words -- spoken ones, at least.
Thankfully, this seems to intrigue him rather than put him off. He leans against the counter.
Left Tackle: Well, if I’ve met my match, I’d at least like to know the name of the girl who is destined to take me down. Can I wrangle that much?
Hm, smooth… Grace contemplates for a long moment…
Grace: Grace.
Pretty. The left tackle smiles brighter, obviously thinking so himself, before nodding.
Left Tackle: Grace. Like the sound of that. [ holding out a hand ] I’m Kenneth.
Grace holds his gaze, taking him in, before letting her eyes drift down to his outstretched hand.
After a second, she takes it.
Cue title sequence.
EXT. NEW YORK STREETS - DAY
The rain continues, creating puddles on the grey sidewalks. A fresh but soggy newspaper left on the doorstep of a different apartment building remarks on the relentless torrent of dreary weather while also giving a subtle nod to the passage of time. Lettering onscreen emphasizes it moments later…
Three weeks later.
From there, the camera pans upward, heading to an upper floor.
INT. CHEY APARTMENT - NIGEL’S BEDROOM - DAY
NIGEL CHEY finishes zipping up his bag, ensuring it’s sealed tight before he ventures out into the rain. Droplets patter against his window as he secures his windbreaker.
He tosses a glance towards the window, obviously not thrilled about it. Considering how unenthused he is about NYU these days, it’s all too tempting to just blow it off and stay in.
But the last thing he needs is a drop in his grades. Not after the hell that was last semester -- and if he does want any chance of transferring, anywhere at all, he’ll want to keep his academic standing above water. So he shoulders his bag with a sigh and heads out.
INT. CHEY APARTMENT - DAY
When Nigel emerges from his bedroom, his family notices immediately. They notice, but no one says anything, not sure how to break the tension.
It’s evident this cold shoulder has been going on for a while. ERNESTO CHEY exchanges a look with LIEZEL CHEY, tacitly encouraging conversation, but she keeps her mouth shut. Even if she did want to speak, she surely wouldn’t know what to say. REYNA CHEY watches the silent movement from her usual armchair, more riveted by it than whatever pathetic soap is on TV.
Nigel pretends not to notice, for once not feeling like the one who needs to placate and keep the peace. He could walk right out the door like he has for weeks now, but Ernesto manages to get a word in before he can disappear.
Ernesto: Quite wet outside today. Bad weather. Nigel: … yeah. Liezel: Be careful getting to NYU. It will be slippery. I don’t want you to get sick.
Nigel chooses not to acknowledge his mother’s comment. The silence stings, but Liezel says nothing else, dipping her head down to her work at the kitchen counter.
Ernesto: Are you sure you want to walk? I could drop you off. Nigel: I have my coat.
He gestures to his windbreaker indicatively. Hard to argue with that. Ernesto reminds Nigel of when dinner is, and he claims he’ll try to be there, but as of the last few days there’s no guarantee that’ll be the case. For better or worse, Nigel is demonstrating he can be self-sufficient when he wants to be.
Even if no one else seems happy with it. Nigel opens the door, Liezel braving one more meek comment.
Liezel: Have a nice day.
Nigel doesn’t respond, shutting the door behind him before she can finish the sentiment. It obviously hurts, though Liezel does a decent job of stuffing it down. It seems Nigel got his knack for compartmentalizing from somewhere.
Reyna, on the other hand, is less than pleased to see it. She frowns to herself, shaking her head slightly as Ernesto and Liezel awkwardly return to their business.
EXT. JUPITER RECORDS - DAY
In natural contrast to the eastern downpour, the sunshine is still relentless over in Los Angeles. It glares brightly against the glassy exterior of the Jupiter Records building, reflecting in all directions.
INT. JUPITER RECORDS - MEETING ROOM - DAY
The mood is decidedly more jubilant here, too, as the EXECUTIVES excitedly inform the gathered young women that they are the official finalists for the coveted five spots in the label’s girl group project. After the retreat and weeks of debate, they’ve narrowed it down to less than ten finalists, six of whom are present in the room with them.
KIMMY PRICE, who looks just thrilled to be included; TABITHA FLORES, who is already impatient to prove herself and tapping her manicured fingers on the surface of the long meeting table they’re seated around. ALEENA SAYYID remains curious but calm, while MADYSIN MAY is busy sitting up on the table and lowkey flirting with the Jupiter representatives present. RONICA LEWIS watches the rest of them wild mild interest, keeping her game face on.
And YINDRA AMINO. She’s managed to squeak her way into final consideration, though what exactly made each of them pass the test remains a secret. So for now she’s trying to remain agreeable and somewhat aloof, holding her few cards close to the vest.
But even this close to success, the pressure doesn’t let up. Because now that they’re this close, the scrutiny becomes even more intense, as the process now requires extra assessment to develop the ultimate configuration of the girls they have left. This means more chemistry tests, more vocal mixes, and any number of personal questioning while they build out the perfect presentation of girl group excellence.
Just peachy. Yindra manages a smile and does her best to hide her nerves, nodding along as the executives lay out expectations for this final step.
INT. LUCAS’S APARTMENT - DAY
The Friar apartment has a strange new energy to it. Although it looks nearly the same, just with one less body sometimes occupying the space, something about it has irreversibly shifted. It feels simultaneously heavier yet lighter; shaded with tension yet unburdened with fresh relief. Like although weight still hangs heavy overhead, the space is no longer perpetually holding its breath.
INT. LUCAS’S APARTMENT - KITCHEN - DAY
The same seems to be the case for GRACE FRIAR. Although her features are etched with grief, and the bags under her eyes indicate more than a few restless nights in her recent history, there’s a serenity to her that wasn’t there before. She’s tired, but at ease, and she walks the floors of her apartment without dreading every creak under her step.
There’s miles to go before she sleeps, though. Kenneth’s passing may have happened in a moment, but the aftermath feels neverending. So much paperwork to handle, inquiries to follow through on. The man may be dead, but he was sure to leave things for her to clean up after him.
That, and the reminders never cease. She goes through the mail she just collected, looking for legal documents but finding more than a couple letters from well-wishers instead. Old friends from high school or Austin sending their condolences, mourning a great man and expressing their shared grief.
Folks who clearly kept up with Kenneth, but sure didn’t make an effort to stay connected with her.
More than that, they have questions. When will the funeral service be? Will there be one? If there’s financial straits preventing it, they’re happy to contribute. Kenneth was such a wonderful man, after all, it would be a damn shame for them not to have the chance to celebrate his life together. After three weeks, they just have to wonder… and if there will be one, they want to do everything in their power to clear their calendars to be there.
They’re not the only one with these questions. Grace herself has them -- one of the many things keeping her up at night -- but pulling something together has been harder than she anticipated. She knows she could find the help, of course…
But it’s not just about her. Grace places the mail on the kitchen counter and doubles back, heading across the living area to the other end of the apartment.
INT. LUCAS’S APARTMENT - LUCAS’S BEDROOM - DAY
As they attempt to downsize and sort through Kenneth’s belongings -- and he certainly had the most things to possess out of the three of them -- Lucas has taken on the task of going through the items stuffed into the closet in his already closet-sized bedroom.
But he’s not making very quick work of it. It’s more like pulling teeth, Lucas seated against the doorframe of the closet and mainly sitting in thoughtless silence. He’ll occasionally pull some random item out of the darkness, turn it over in his hands and try to find meaning in it, before ultimately chucking it into the cardboard box they’ve deemed trash or back into the depths when he can’t decide where it belongs. More often than not, he’s been aiming back into the closet.
Grace arrives in the doorway, gently knocking to get his attention. He stops staring into space and meets her eyes.
Grace: How is it going in here? Lucas: [ with a shrug ] Fine.
Given the trash box only has about one more item in it than the last time Grace checked on him, that’s likely. But she doesn’t point that out, treading cautiously towards what she actually wanted to discuss.
Grace: I’ve gotten more letters. From friends in Austin. They send their best. Lucas: Good for them. Grace: Many of them are asking about services. If we’ve got a date yet. [ a beat ] If we’ll have a date at all…
Lucas doesn’t have the answers, and it’s obvious from his expression that he doesn’t want any. He clenches his jaw and tilts his head back against the doorframe. Grace would like to do the same, but she pushes through and addresses it head on.
Grace: I think we need to decide if we’re going to do this. We can’t keep putting it off. Lucas: Okay? Sounds like you’ve decided then. Grace: I haven’t. I want us to be able to figure it out together. I know it’s -- it’s complicated. But people are asking, and three weeks is quite a long time after someone -- Lucas: Why the hell do I care what “people” think? It’s not their stupid family. [ tossing something into the trash box ] If they care so bad, why don’t they throw a party themselves?
Fair enough. But not helpful. Grace crosses her arms, trying not to bristle at his tone.
Grace: I get that this is weird. I know. You think I don’t know just as well as you do? [ touché ] But we need to act on it. We need to do something. Even if it’s just to get it out of the way, to allow everyone to move on. Including us.
Lucas’s jaw twitches, but he doesn’t argue. He doesn’t look at her either, but the lack of a pithy comment is better than usual lately.
Grace: We can’t just stay in this limbo forever. It doesn’t help anyone. Least of all you. So how about we just… do it. Go through the motions, get through it, and then we can put it to rest. For good. Lucas: [ under his breath ] What a perfectly normal way to talk about burying your husband…
Yes, but when has anything about this family ever been normal? Even so, Grace is clearly put off by the comment. She knows this is hard for him -- she has no doubt about it -- but he seems to forget she lived it all too. In fact, she lived much, much more of it than him.
She doesn’t say any of that, though. If he’s going to act like a kid about it, then she’ll do her best to buck up and act like the adult in the room.
Grace: I’m going to move forward with funeral preparations. Jack and Eric said they would help us with the logistics, so I’m reaching out tonight. [ a beat ] You can be involved, or not, that’s up to you. I get it either way. But I can’t do nothing anymore. Lucas: Okay. Whatever. [ deadpan ] You’re the parent.
Just in case she forgot. Since their situation has been so fucked up, and convoluted, and he basically raised himself. Since she’s never seemed very good at being one before, guess now is as fine a time as any.
It’s almost like he’s fourteen again. Like he has so much anger, so much pain, and he doesn’t know who actually deserves it, so Grace gets a heaping share. All the nuance of their world has died with Kenneth, and now it’s just the two of them left to sort through it and remember how to live with it all.
Grace is giving all the patience she has left towards him, but God, if it isn’t hard sometimes. She chooses to hold her tongue and steps away, leaving Lucas in the quiet once again.
He doesn’t seem thrilled with how that went either, but holding everything together is taking up enough of his mental power right now. He swallows the ache in his throat and sniffs, reaching for another pointless object in the darkness.
INT. L.A. APARTMENT - DAY
Some of that darkness lingers with MAYA HART, who looks about as tired as Grace. She’s seated at the kitchen table but isn’t eating her breakfast, instead staring blankly out the balcony door towards the bright Los Angeles sun.
Her shine is dulled enough that Farkle notices, remarking on it when he exits his bedroom with his backpack and finds her at the table. He jokes about catching her in a rare pre-glam moment, which she just manages to remember to smile at.
Farkle: Honestly, I’m more impressed I managed to catch you at all. I feel like you and I have just been missing one another constantly since you got back from your retreat. Melissa and Justin must really be working you hard for the EP. Maya: Um, yeah. Yeah, it’s just been… super busy.
She’s a good enough actress that her delivery is just believable enough -- at least with someone as equally consumed with their own emotional baggage as Farkle. That’s what Maya wants to discuss anyway, using Isa as a convenient route to get the topic as far away from her and Global Beat as possible. Once they gloss over any updates from the Friar front…
Maya: Isa tell you all that? Farkle: No, Riley. Isa’s been… I’m sure they’re overwhelmed. And busy. Just with everything going on with Lucas. Maya: Right. They did leave in a pretty big hurry. [ a beat ] I couldn’t help but notice the couch was all clear when I came back though. That weekend. Farkle: Oh… yeah. Well. You know how I like to… keep things clean. And tidy. Maya: Mhm. It certainly didn’t look like anyone had slept there the night before, though. Let alone anyone six feet tall. Farkle: [ clearing his throat ] Yeah. Well. Isa said I should just share the bed with them. That it was stupid to be on the couch when we’ve been friends for -- you know, a long time. Maya: Right… Farkle: And it’s comfortable. Casual. We were just being, you know, cool about it. Maya: Of course. So must have been a good weekend, then? Farkle: Uh, yeah. Yeah, I’d say… yeah. Maya: Good vibes. Chill times. No big news to report. Farkle: Uh, nope. Yeah. Yeah… no, yeah. Maya: Right.
For such a good actor in his own right, Farkle really is terrible at being nonchalant. Maya can see right through him, and it’s the first time in days that she’s felt compelled to crack a smile. He meets her eyes, and she simply quirks an eyebrow knowingly.
That’s all it takes. Farkle caves, spilling into a hasty explanation about everything that happened with Isa. Partially just because he can’t seem to help himself, but also because it’s clear he has been dying to tell someone. With the way things ended so abruptly, with Isa having to rush off to help Lucas, it feels like he’s been living his life on pause for the last three weeks.
Maya listens attentively, with mild amusement, letting him stammer out all of the spinning thoughts in his frazzled head until he manages to wear himself out.
Maya: Wow. Farkle: So now it’s like -- I mean, I’m trying to be cool about it. And I am. This is a serious time, and I want to respect that and give them all the time they need. I get it. But I’m also like… I mean, what am I supposed to do with myself? We didn’t really get to talk about it, and like -- I had sex with them. One of my best friends. Maya: Ew. But yeah, crazy. Farkle: And I don’t want to like make a big deal out of it, or be insane, but how am I supposed to not be crazy about that? Am I insane for wanting like… I don’t know, a shred of insight as to what they’re thinking about the whole thing? [ hiding his head in his hands ] For the love of God, am I ever going to stop being a disaster? Maya: Sources say no. But that’s okay, that’s my favorite thing about you.
In any case, she understands why he feels so wound up. If something that big shifted between the two of them, it would make her anxious too. He’s valid, but she can only hope Isa will have the sense of mind to let him know what they’re feeling about it sooner rather than later.
On the other hand, she can’t help but find the whole thing just a little bit funny.
Maya: I’m just trying to figure out when exactly you became such a hot commodity. Like, Zay? Sure, he’s always been hot shit -- and wouldn’t let anyone forget it. But you, my darling, baby giraffe Farkle Minkus? When did you suddenly become such a whore?
Farkle groans, shoving Maya’s elbow and making her laugh. Although the comment is in jest, Farkle feels the need to defend himself.
Farkle: It’s not like that. This wasn’t just… I mean, yes, okay, hooking up with Charlie was one thing. Maya: Still insane, by the way. Farkle: But this isn’t the same. It’s Isa. It’s not… it’s always been different with Isa.
The sentiment is said so delicately for how it may as well be stating the obvious. But Maya doesn’t rib him for that. Instead, she softens, eyeing him with equally gentle fondness.
Maya: I know.
She may have been onto it even before either of them, in fact. She knows Farkle has long carried this torch -- and how fragile his heart has been as of late. As long as he’s closer to being happy, that’s all she really cares about.
For now, though, he has to go to class. When he asks if Maya will be heading back to the studio today, she freezes momentarily, before expertly deflecting. She claims she’s been doing some last-minute song-smithing here, and that her producers gave her the all-clear to hermit away until she’s got it polished how she likes. So if he sees her milling around the apartment more than usual, he shouldn’t think anything of it.
Never mind the real reason she can’t bear the thought of stepping foot back inside Global Beat. If Farkle never finds out -- if no one ever does -- then all the better.
INT. NYU - THEATER - DAY
A matinee production of Ghost is currently rolling, EVAN SCOTT and his co-star playing the Whoopi Goldberg role occupying the stage. The show must go on, and it certainly is, the world inside the theater walls proceeding as if nothing has changed.
Which explains why Riley is mentally anywhere but onstage. She’s waiting in the wings, due to reemerge under the lights in the next scene, but her focus is elsewhere. She’s pacing the darkness and engrossed by her phone, keeping up a text conversation with Lucas. He’s given her the update about Grace wanting to move forward with services, so there’s a lot to discuss and unpack.
Riley tries to type out a thoughtful reply, but Lucas beats her to her next message.
“Don’t worry about it. Probably easier to just talk in person”
Which is likely true, but also feels like a convenient way to nudge confronting the feelings as long as possible. Riley hastily deletes the paragraph she had typed before, instead agreeing and assuring him that she’ll be there as soon as this performance wraps up.
On stage, someone repeats their line more forcefully, but Riley still doesn’t notice. It’s not until a stagehand nudges her and informs her she’s missed her cue that she pulls it back together, quickly pocketing her phone. From her perch on a stool in the shadows, IMOGEN LEE snorts.
Imogen: Damn, Riley. If you’re basically out to lunch, I can take over. I have been studying my lines…
Riley so does not have the bandwidth to deal with petty understudies right now. She ignores Imogen and takes a deep breath, doing her best to shove the real world from her mind and get back into character.
As she steps out onto the stage --
INT. NYU - DRESSING ROOM - LATER - DAY
Riley finishes stuffing her bag in a hurry, still half in costume and make-up as she rushes to leave. The show has just barely wrapped up curtain call, but she doesn’t have time to waste.
INT. NYU - BACKSTAGE HALLWAY - DAY
As she steps out of the dressing room, she nearly runs into Evan, who catches her arms before she can topple over. Once he confirms she’s all right, he asks where she’s running off to.
Evan: Auditorium is this way. You know Hill is going to have notes. She -- Riley: She always does. Yeah. It’s not that I don’t want to hear them, I just… I really have somewhere else I need to be. [ checking her phone ] Did you feel like the orchestra was moving at the speed of sludge today? We’re like twenty minutes later than usual. Evan: Uh, no. I was more concerned with remembering the right notes.
He says it playfully, but there is a slight edge to his tone. Imogen isn’t the only one who’s noticed Riley seems less than focused -- and now it’s starting to affect the production.
Still, Evan approaches it more tactfully than their peer. He lowers his voice to give them more privacy, waiting until a couple of their castmates pass by and disappear through the stage doors to speak.
Evan: You missed your cue. Before intermission. Riley: Yeah. Yeah, I know, sorry. Evan: All good. It’s just a college musical. I just wanted to check… like, is everything okay? You haven’t seemed quite like yourself.
No, Evan. No it’s not. She doesn’t have time to be there for her friends who are facing some of the biggest auditions of their lives, nor have basically any involvement in her roommate adjusting to letting their father into their world. She can’t be there for her friend who just ended a toxic relationship, or help her candidate jump into his hard-won new role.
There’s just been a major death in her may-as-well-be family that has shattered all sense of normalcy, and she doesn’t have nearly enough time to help pick up the pieces. There’s just not enough her to go around.
But none of that is his business, so she shrugs.
Riley: Yes. Yeah, it’s just…
She really doesn’t have the words to express it. After another wordless head shake, she settles for little.
Riley: I’ve got a lot on my mind.
Clearly, if she’s forgetting when she’s supposed to enter stage right. Before Evan can respond, she’s distracted again by her phone, buzzing with another text from Lucas.
“Don’t bother. Don’t want to burn you out between shows. It’s all pointless anyway”
The frown on her face signals this isn’t the kind of reply she wants from him. Evan eyes her curiously, but wisely decides not to dig deeper right now. He opts to stick with the things he can address.
Evan: Well, whatever you’ve got going on, don’t be any later. I can take any notes Hill has for you -- aside from the imminent comment about your late entrance. Riley: Of course. That would be great, Evan, thank you. I owe you big time.
He nods, offering a smile and leaving her be. He glances back at her over his shoulder as he steps back into the auditorium, watching her become absorbed in her phone yet again.
Another text from Lucas.
“Just go home. Talk later”
Her boyfriend is going through what may very well be the biggest emotional clusterfuck of his life, and she can’t be there for him. Not the way she wants to be. The longer she’s gone, the easier it is for him to do this. To pull away; to recede into himself and bottle it all up. To be crushed under it, when this is precisely the moment he has to power through. She hates that she can’t be there, when all she wants to do is be there by his side to endure it together.
There’s not enough time -- and she dreads the possibility that she might just lose him too.
Song Cue ♫ ♪ “I Have Nothing” as performed by Whitney Houston || Performed by Riley Matthews
Although she’s been killing it on the stage, nothing beats a Riley performance that’s coming authentically from the soul. As she walks the backstage halls of the theater, singing her solo soliloquy, it feels more captivating than any professional staging or bright stage lights could fabricate.
That always goes doubly when she’s singing about Lucas. The lyrics are more than fitting. In the same vein as “On My Own,” “My Man,” and “Better,” no kind of performance demonstrates more of Riley’s range than the ones straight from her heart -- and at this point, the two are one in the same.
Lucas is her heart. And if he’s breaking, she’s broken too.
Don't walk away from me I have nothing, nothing, nothing If I don't have you
Once Riley reaches the end of the hallway, back in front of the stage doors, the camera pans away and makes her feel smaller and further away. Before the key change can hit around 3:05, her vocals start to distort, sounding far away and bleeding into Whitney Houston’s original track --
EXT. RURAL COUNTRY ROAD - FLASHBACK - DAY
Which becomes diegetic, playing through the chunky over-the-ear headphones of Grace’s portable CD player. She’s on her walk home from the bus stop, her family farm a good mile out from where the closest public school bus drops off.
Grace doesn’t seem bothered by the walk. It’s one of her favorite times of the day, actually, time to be alone with nature and get lost in her thoughts. With a well-worn pair of cowboy boots and the autumn breeze, there’s no better chance to find a second to breathe.
Only today, it seems, she’s not alone. She frowns slightly when the song starts to end and she hears gravel crunching behind her -- someone driving along the dirt road. It doesn’t get much use on a typical afternoon. She glances over her shoulder.
An older but very cool blue Ford pick-up is ambling down the street. She expects it to pass on by -- maybe doing business with the Carmichaels down the hill -- but it slows as it approaches her. For a moment, she tenses, not sure whether she should be wary…
Until she recognizes the face behind the wheel. Beautiful eyes, and that smile that could start wars.
Kenneth. He pulls up beside her and rolls down the passenger side window, offering her one of those coveted smiles. She removes her headphones, looping them around her neck.
Kenneth: Howdy. Fancy meeting you here. Grace: I live here. Kenneth: In the middle of the road?
Grace blushes, already flustered just from his attention. They’ve been chatting a bit for weeks now, definitely flirting here and there, yet he doesn’t seem to lose any effect on her. It’s almost annoying. She pushes some hair behind her ear.
Grace: You know what I meant. Kenneth: Sure did. That’s why when my parents surprised me with this baby this afternoon, and I got to take it for my first drive, I thought hey -- what better place to cruise for a while?
So he came right to see her. Grace doesn’t know what to do with that information, so she breezes past it.
Grace: It’s nice. I like the color. Kenneth: I know. You love blue.
Yeah… she does. After a beat, Kenneth runs a hand through his hair.
Kenneth: Can I give you a ride? Grace: I’m used to the walk. It’s okay. Kenneth: I ain’t asking if you can handle it. Knowing you, I’m sure you can. I’m asking if you want a ride.
Well. That is different, isn’t it. Does she hold out her resilience, stay sane and keep walking the path of safe, familiar independence… or does she get in the car with him?
Somehow, the choice is easy. Grace takes a deep breath and steps off the grass, approaching the car. Kenneth’s expression is utterly delighted as he leans across the console to unlock the passenger door.
She climbs up into the seat and exchanges a shy smile with him.
EXT. KINSLEY FAMILY FARM - FLASHBACK - DAY
Kenneth pulls up outside Grace’s home, putting the truck in park. Directly in front of them is the farmhouse, a modest but charming dwelling surrounded by acres of green. Several dozen feet away, the red wood of a barn is visible, and adjacent another dozen feet, a roomy stable with a fenced-in riding pasture.
INT. KENNETH’S TRUCK - FLASHBACK - DAY
Although there’s nothing holding her back, Grace doesn’t immediately get out of the car. There’s something nice, and a bit enthralling, about sitting in his passenger seat.
Grace: Thanks for the ride. Kenneth: ‘Course. Any time. Grace: Don’t make promises like that. You’re gonna end up a chauffeur before you know it. Kenneth: Hey, if it means getting to spend a little more time with you, then I’m game.
The compliment comes out effortlessly smooth. So damn charming… Grace can feel the blush crawling up her cheeks.
She flushes even further when Kenneth takes a long moment to take her in, gazing at her with a soft shade to his features. After a moment, he starts to lean closer…
As per usual, Grace panics and deflects. She interrupts his move with conversation, letting words spill out of her without thinking.
Grace: What are you up to for the rest of the afternoon?
Kenneth hesitates. The slightest edge of frustration creeps into his features, but it ebbs away quickly and is replaced with amused fondness. There is something about this little cat-and-mouse game they have going on that is all the more enjoyable. It’s like the more she plays hard to get, just dancing outside the perimeter of his obvious interest, the more appealing she becomes -- whether Grace is doing it intentionally or not.
Kenneth: Probably practice. Some weight-training -- coach says I need to gain another five-to-ten to maximize my impact on the field. Grace: [ sure, she totally gets what that means ] Uh-huh. Kenneth: So the usual. Football, avoiding homework, ignoring my dad when he tries to grill me about football and/or homework. How about you? Grace: Um… homework. [ off his laugh ] Then maybe some writing, if I have time. Kenneth: What kind of writing? Grace: Just… personal stuff. Silly stuff. Nothing important. Kenneth: You like, an author or something? I didn’t know you were into all that. [ off her shrug ] So when do I get to read your stuff? Grace: Yeah, uh, try never. Kenneth: Oh, come on! Don’t tease me like that --
He reaches out and playfully tugs at her braid, which she giggles at before swatting his hands away. Their hands brush and linger for a moment longer than necessary, before Grace pulls hers back and twiddles with the end of her plait.
Kenneth slouches back in his seat, whistling and shaking his head as he gets another good look at her.
Kenneth: Dang. A bona fide writer. I mean, I knew you were smart and everything, and you’ve got those killer grades in English. But… Grace Kinsley, you truly are something else.
No one has ever said anything like that to her before. No one has ever looked at her like that, the way he is right now. Like she’s actually there rather than invisible -- like there’s something worth seeing.
It’s thrilling, but also terrifying, so Grace feels the sudden instinct to bolt. She offers another shy smile and starts to gather her bag.
Grace: First things first, I have to feed the horses, so. Best get going.
EXT. KINSLEY FAMILY FARM - FLASHBACK - DAY
Grace hops out of the car, slinging her bag over her shoulder. Kenneth looks disappointed to see her go -- and a bit disappointed that his excuse to prolong heading home has run out.
Kenneth: Writer girl, horse girl -- is there anything you don’t do, Kinsley? Grace: Football.
Kenneth barks out a laugh, which earns another smile from her. Kenneth thinks on that, a moment of vulnerability breaking through.
Kenneth: As someone who does, gotta admit, think right now I’d rather be feeding the horses.
The comment surprises Grace. Given how good he is at the game, how much of a king he seems like on the field, she assumed football was naturally his whole world. She never would’ve guessed there was even a hint of conflict hidden beneath that strong veneer.
Somehow, the moment makes her feel the desire to open up too.
Grace: Do you want to see them?
The invitation slips out before she can question it. Kenneth contemplates… then grins.
INT. KINSLEY FAMILY FARM - STABLES - FLASHBACK - DAY
Grace pulls open the door to the stables and enters first, signaling for Kenneth to move quietly. Since he’s new, his presence might unsettle the horses. He playfully mimics her gesture, pretending to zip his lips.
Tellingly, the horses do react to the unfamiliar face. They grow skittish, whinnying in apprehension. Grace shushes them and talks softly as she makes her way further inside, Kenneth hanging back a bit to watch. Although it’s a marvel to see how natural she is with the creatures, he seems a little perturbed by their reaction to him.
Kenneth: Don’t think they like me. Grace: They don’t know you. Like I said, they’re shy around strangers. Kenneth: Fitting. Sounds like someone else I know.
Grace rolls her eyes, petting the nose of one of the ponies rather than responding.
Kenneth: Guess they should work on their socializing skills. How many other people have you brought in to meet them? How’d they fare?
This time, Grace is silent for other reasons. Her expression grows more guarded, and slightly embarrassed. The lack of an answer speaks volumes, though, Kenneth putting it together fast enough.
No one. Grace hasn’t brought anyone else in here.
This is her safe space, a sacred shelter, and somehow he’s managed to find his way inside.
Cautiously, he saunters over to join her by the horses and does his absolute best to be unassuming. Considering he’s a hulking football player with no sense of subtle, it doesn’t work, the horse Grace is currently petting skittering away a bit as he approaches.
Kenneth: Sorry. I’m more trouble than I’m worth. Grace: Don’t say that. Kenneth: Think they’ll ever like me? [ looking at her ] Do I have any chance?
The question feels loaded. Grace meets his eyes.
Grace: You have to earn their trust.
She’ll do her best to help him, if she can. Utilizing her own goodwill with the horse, she lures it forward again, back up to the edge of the pen. She soothingly rubs its nose and then dips her forehead against the flat of its muzzle, Kenneth watching in bewildered fascination.
Once it seems calm enough, she glances his way… then takes his hand, gently guiding it up to brush the horse’s nose.
Cute a moment as that might have been, it doesn’t quite land. Because nope, this dude has not earned its trust, and it’s not playing the same games Grace may be. The horse brays and shuffles backwards again, out from under their hands.
Kenneth: Damn it. Grace: [ with a laugh ] Don’t worry. Just give it time. Kenneth: … so does that mean I’m welcome back here again?
It sure does seem to imply… Grace realizes that, pausing and glancing at their hands. They’ve come to rest on the edge of the gate, hers still laid on top of his tan fingers.
Kenneth doesn’t seem at all opposed to that. In fact, he starts to flip his hand to link their fingers together, but Grace slips away, retreating further into the stables to distract herself with the horse feed.
As much of a tease as she seems intent on being, Kenneth manages to take it well. He swallows his impatience and follows her over to the oat barrels, taking a good look around. An item hanging on the wall above her catches his eye.
Kenneth: What’s that?
Grace follows his gaze, landing on the same sight. It’s a decorative horse shoe, slightly larger-than-scale and made of shimmering blue glass.
Grace: Nothing. Just some art. Kenneth: Well, I don’t believe that. Wouldn’t be hanging in such a high place of honor if it wasn’t special. Grace: It’s in a stable. Kenneth: Which is a place of honor to you. Ain’t that right?
Touché. Grace doesn’t deny that, keeping her eyes on the oat scoop.
Grace: My mama got it for me when I was little. From a local artist in North Carolina, when my parents went. I couldn’t go, stayed with my grandparents, but she knew I was sad about it. I wanted to see the wild horses. So she brought me back the next best thing.
Learning a lot about each other today. Kenneth continues to look at it, absorbing how much it means to her… then lets his gaze drift back to her.
Kenneth: So you were always big on ponies? Or did she just take a lucky guess that you’d be obsessed -- Grace: How did you know my favorite color is blue?
The question slips out unprompted, confusing Kenneth. He raises his eyebrows when she turns to face him, her expression guarded… but delicate too.
Kenneth: What do you mean? Grace: When I saw your truck. I said “I like the color,” and you said you know. That I love blue. Kenneth: … yeah? Is that wrong? Grace: No. It’s right. It’s exactly right. How did you know that? Kenneth, amused: Is that a real question? You told me, Grace.
Once, in some inane conversation in the last few weeks, she must’ve mentioned it. Offhanded, to fill the space, not thinking anything of it herself.
But he heard her. He listened.
Grace: Oh. I don’t remember that. Kenneth: Well, I do. [ a beat ] I remember everything you say.
Oh. Grace’s stomach flips, and that flush returns to her cheeks. She doesn’t turn away from him, but her gaze dips to the floor, not sure if she’s ready to be so seen.
But Kenneth is ready. He’s been ready. He steps closer.
Kenneth: I like listening to you. Grace: I don’t know why. I’m not good at it. Talking. Kenneth: I think you’re dang good at just about everything. Grace: I’m not. I don’t… talk, and I don’t… let people in here -- Kenneth: And yet, here we are. Grace: I don’t let people in. You hang around long enough, you’re gonna figure out why. I’m nothing special. I’m -- I’m just -- Kenneth: Grace.
He’s made it in front of her now, closing the distance between them. Grace has backed up against the feed station, nowhere else to run and hide. Nearby, the horses whinny uncertainly.
With a tender touch, Kenneth reaches and tilts Grace’s chin upward, guiding her into meeting his eyes again. Not allowing her to shy away. This time, she doesn’t pull away.
The space between them grows thinner… Grace has the sense she should slip away, the relentless instinct for self-preservation, but it’s suddenly hazier in the magnetic storm of his grip. They inch closer… and closer… their lips almost brush…
Kenneth: [ in a murmur ] Do I have any chance?
In an instant, Kenneth gets his answer. Because despite his eagerness, Grace caves first, leaning into their first kiss. The first one is slow, testing the waters, and they break for a quiet moment to catch their breath when they pull apart.
Then, it’s game over. Kenneth cups Grace’s face and pulls her into another kiss, this one more urgent than the first. And by some grace of God, or maybe the Devil, Grace loses all her reservations in the thrill of his embrace. She matches his fervor and kisses him back, grabbing his flannel and pulling him close.
We pan up and away, lingering on the decorative horseshoe…
INT. CHUBBIES - DAY
Out of the fog of the nineties and back in the present, Charlie is back at Chubbies. He has his travel journal open and colored tabs ready to organize, but that seems to be as far as he’s gotten. He’s distracted this afternoon, lost in his own head as he stares blankly out the window and watches people pass on the sidewalk without really seeing them.
He certainly doesn’t see ZAY BABINEAUX, who enters the diner from the other side of the street. Unlike Charlie, he’s energetic and alert, and he only brightens further when he spots the all too familiar back of Charlie’s head.
But he has to tread cautiously -- it’s been a minute since his little revelation during his audition, but the feelings haven’t changed. So he may not be able to pull off nonchalant as expertly as before. He needs to act strategically to avoid embarrassing himself.
So Zay does what he does best. He goes for a tease. He quietly approaches from behind and then strikes by surprise, reaching over the back of the adjacent booth to tap Charlie on his far shoulder. He jumps in response, naturally looking over his shoulder until he realizes that’s silly a second later, since he’s just looking at the window -- and whips his head back around just in time to find Zay standing at his table with a cheeky smile on his face.
Charlie: Jeez. Zay: Hi. You’re twitchy today. Charlie: You scared me. Zay: Since day one. It’s basically my job.
Charlie resists the urge to roll his eyes. Zay plops into the booth opposite him, asking how things are going. What’s he working on? Before Zay can get too close a look, Charlie swiftly closes the journal and subtly pulls it closer to himself.
Charlie: Nothing much. Just killing time until those college acceptances come through. Zay: Seriously? Charlie: Were you expecting something else? Remember who you’re talking to here. Zay: Wah, wah. But no, not particularly. I just feel like -- I don’t know, I assumed you were booked up. I feel like I haven’t seen you in weeks.
Yeah… that would be the lowkey mood-swing-depression hibernation… classic ostracized-by-Eleanor coping mechanism. Charlie avoids getting into it, though, clearing his throat and shrugging.
Charlie: No, yeah, I’ve just… um, been busy.
Response of the month, apparently. Zay can tell he’s being vague, but he decides to let it go for now, because being near him again already feels volatile and pushing any buttons when he’s so internally unsteady feels like risky business.
And he already has a big ask on his mind. Speaking of colleges and acceptances…
Zay: So. Turner. I’ve been wanting to talk to you about it. Charlie: Oh, shoot, yeah. Sorry, I totally meant to follow up -- Zay: Why are you apologizing? Don’t apologize to me. Charlie: Okay, right. Sorry. I mean --
Charlie winces at himself, earning a laugh from Zay. He takes a second to compose himself, skipping the compulsive apologies, then starts again.
Charlie: I meant to check in earlier. Zay: Before you evaporated? Charlie: Sure. So, what? Did you hear anything? I feel like if you had, you would’ve said something. Zay: Correct. Believe me, if they’d told me anything worthwhile, you’d be the first to know. [ shaking his head ] No, they’re saving that big reveal for later. But they’re doing a post-audition semi-formal gala of sorts this week to celebrate everyone’s hard work, and for getting this far, blah blah blah. Charlie: Wow. That’s nice? Zay: Yeah, in theory. Only they’re also announcing the three finalists for the two spots at this thing, rather than sparing us all the tragedy or just saying which two got picked upfront. Charlie: Wow. That’s… a lot. Zay: No fucking kidding. Blood might be spilled, Carrie style. Not to mention it’s such a dramatic as fuck way to do this whole thing, but I guess that’s kind of par for the course in the business. The other part is that we all get to do some sort of solo presentation, like a little talent show, to make us all feel good and special before they harpoon most of our high hopes.
It’ll be interesting, at least, there’s no doubt about that. Based on his expression, Charlie seems grateful he’s not trying to exist in this industry more and more every day.
Zay: Anyway, the circus allows each of us to invite a plus-one, and I was thinking you could come with me. [ a beat ] You know, as a thank-you for showing up in the first place.
It takes Charlie a minute to process the request, and once he does, he isn’t quite sure he can believe it.
Charlie: Oh. Zay: I know I didn’t exactly sell it that well, but I swear it’ll be fun. Probably. Maybe. At least entertaining. And not stressful for you, considering you don’t have any stakes in the whole thing. Charlie: Well, aside from you… Zay: Aside from me. But personally. All the more reason to have you there -- I’m going to need all the luck I can get. Charlie: No, right, ha ha. For sure. I just, um…
Charlie subconsciously grips the edge of his journal, hugging it a bit closer to him.
Charlie: Is Vanessa gonna be cool with that? Or are you all not allowed to like, be each other’s plus-ones? Zay: Oh. No. No, uh… don’t think she’d like that very much anyway.
That’s foreboding. Charlie frowns, confused, opening the door for Zay to truly catch him off-guard. Forgot to mention this little detail…
Zay: We ended things. A bit ago.
Charlie stops breathing. For how sharply those words just sent electricity through his veins, though, he does a remarkable job of keeping it together.
Charlie: Oh. Shoot. [ frown deepening ] I’m sorry. Zay: [ waving him off ] It’s… you know. Whatever. I mean, honestly, it’s fine. For the best. Like, we liked each other, but with the competition and everything…
Not to mention the whole still-in-love-with-your-ex thing. But details, details. Regardless, the point is that there’s certainly no issue here. There’s no barriers to entry, and no reason not to follow his gut and invite him along.
That is, except for Charlie himself. If he doesn’t want to go, no harm, no foul.
Zay: Like I said, I totally get if it sounds like a lot. You were just my first thought.
If Zay says one more nice thing so easily like that, he’s going to knock him out. But Charlie manages to keep his cool, contemplating for a moment before shrugging.
Charlie: Why not? I’d be happy to come. Thanks for inviting me.
Zay grins, relieved. Charlie aims to shake off the strange tension that seems to have resurfaced between them, taking a shot at his expense.
Charlie: Besides, it’s probably wise for me to tag along. If this really is going to become a bloodbath, you’ll need someone to cover you -- or pull you out of there before you commit murder.
He kids, but he hasn’t met the Turner cohort yet. Zay makes a face.
Now that he’s gotten through his high-stakes request -- and got the answer he hoped for -- Zay’s brain is working enough again to think about anything else.
Zay: Speaking of shit we meant to ask about, how did that thing from the other night go? When you left the audition? I know you were pretty serious about it.
God, Zay, you have no idea… and he still won’t, as Charlie side-steps the question once the initial rush of dread wears off.
Charlie: Oh, yeah. Yeah, it went… great. All good.
Zay smiles, and Charlie just manages to mirror it.
INT. JUPITER RECORDS - OFFICE - DAY
To round out the afternoon, Yindra finds herself specifically called into the office of one of the main label representatives putting the girl group together. The LABEL REP greets her cheerfully and invites her to sit wherever she’s comfortable.
Label Rep: We’re just waiting for one more.
That has Yindra more uncertain than before. She figured being singled out was either very good news or very bad news, given they’re running at six right now, but if she’s not the only one then she isn’t sure what to think.
Even more so once Aleena appears in the doorway, receiving the same warm greeting.
She and Yindra eye each other curiously for a second, both trying to suss out what could have possibly brought them both here. They’re not similar voice parts. They don’t have the same core skills. Aleena is far from Yindra’s most direct competition, far as she could surmise.
Even so, there they both are. Aleena offers a tight smile and takes the seat next to Yindra, both of them turning their attention to the label rep.
Label Rep: First, I just wanted to offer my most sincere congratulations. It’s quite the feat that you both made it this far in the process, and I hope you’re very proud of yourselves.
Yindra senses hedging, but Aleena beats her to a pithy comment.
Aleena: I’m saving the pride for if I actually make it, personally.
So they can skip all the niceties. What is this really about? The rep gets that signal, clearing their throat and getting to the point.
Label Rep: It’s no joke about how talented both of you are. Between us, you two are certainly some of the strongest contenders in this crop, and I’m not just saying that. There’s so much going for each of you, so in that regard, keep doing what you’re doing. Yindra: But…? If we’re here discussing it, surely there’s a but.
Indeed. The label rep goes on to explain that as they well know after the retreat experience, the label is taking everything into consideration when crafting the ultimate girl group to resuscitate the genre. That goes for skill, but marketability as well. Looks are one factor, of course, which neither girl should be worried about -- they’re both gorgeous. However…
Label Rep: The general public is a fickle beast, particularly the American subset. Did you know consumers will become averse to a product they traditionally love just because the packaging suddenly changed colors? Or because the text of the brand name is just slightly too big?
Point is, the smallest details really do matter. That goes doubly for the industry, where being an entertainer basically invites scrutiny to an abnormal degree. This is something the label is keenly aware of, and trying to anticipate every angle as they put together the perfect combination of women. For the two of them…
Label Rep: The concern has been raised that your names may be… too similar.
Yindra frowns, confused. Aleena looks less caught off-guard, but just as perturbed.
Yindra: I’m sorry? I don’t understand. Label Rep: With a girl group -- or any group, for that matter -- you want each member to be distinct. To bring their own unique personality and flavor to the table, that dissuades any sense of interchangeability. You want there to be the feeling that this combination of girls is it, the absolute pinnacle of personas coming together for a master class in performance. Aleena: Right. Sure. Yindra: But I don’t see how that applies? Our names aren’t similar. I mean, I guess they both end in “A.” Aleena: So does Tabitha. Label Rep: Yes, well -- Aleena: And Ronica. Yindra: Wow, maybe there are a lot of “ah” ending names -- Label Rep: That’s not the concern. But the reasoning is beside the point.
Regardless of why, they’ve honed in on these two as a potential issue, and they want to be ahead of the curve by proactively finding a solution. Thus, why they’ve summoned them there today.
Label Rep: We’re hoping that one of you  -- or both, if you so choose -- would be willing to take on a nickname. While a member of the group.
Something more distinct, and ideally poppy. A pseudonym that’ll ring fresh with the rest and help create the perfect symphony of names that just flies off the tongue.
Although she can’t put her finger on why, the suggestion makes Yindra uncomfortable. Despite how cheerfully the rep is pitching it, something just doesn’t feel right. Aleena seems equally resistant.
Aleena: So you want us to play a part. Label Rep: No. No, not at all -- Aleena: You’re asking us to take on a different name. Isn’t that inherently being someone else? Label Rep: Absolutely nothing about either of you needs to change. You have great assets all around, and we want to highlight that. It’s just about… finding the right label. Spicing up the packaging. That’s all. We want to give you the best chance for success.
Only a name isn’t just a label -- it’s an identity. It’s Yindra’s identity, and she isn’t sure she wants to get her start being known by something else entirely.
Label Rep: Some of the greatest artists out there today have stage names, after all. Like Lorde! Or… or, um… Yindra: Lady Gaga. Aleena: Cardi B. Yindra: Halsey. Aleena: Lana Del Rey. Label Rep: Yes! Yes, all of the above. You totally get what I’m saying.
Except she couldn’t be bothered to do her own research first… well, suppose that’s the joy of having the grunt work in a project like this. It’s certainly not one of the label executives sitting down with them to have this conversation.
Aleena: So how is this being decided, exactly? Label Rep: Well, that’s the best part. We know you all are working on building collaboration, and we want to foster that one-hundred percent. So we’re putting the choice in your hands! The two of you can work it out amongst yourselves who would like the fun little name remix.
Oh, even better! They not only want one of them to drop their identity, they’re going to make them battle it out to pick who. Less blood on their hands. Aleena and Yindra exchange an awkward side-eye.
Label Rep: To help you decide, the label is going to send you a list in the next couple of days with some of the new names they’ve been workshopping for you. So you’ll have a much better sense of what this new pop persona might sound like before you have to pull the trigger.
With that, she’ll let them go, but they’d love it if they could hear back before the end of the week.
INT. JUPITER RECORDS - HALLWAY - DAY
As they exit, Yindra tries to make conversation, mostly to cover her own discomfort.
Yindra: That was weird, right? Kind of dumb to make us have to work out their aesthetic preferences, but -- Aleena, flatly: It’s not about aesthetics.
Yindra pauses, uncertain. Aleena stops walking and sighs, deciding to just give it to her straight.
Aleena: It’s not that our names are similar. You said it yourself, they’re not. They’re basically at opposite ends of the alphabet. Yindra: Yeah. Which is why it’s dumb that -- Aleena: It’s not that they’re alike. It’s that they’re not white enough.
Yindra’s stomach drops. That must have been where the itching sense of distaste came from. It wasn’t said out loud, not by the label, but…
Aleena: Look, I’ve been in this business a couple years now, and they all play the same games. [ with an eye roll ] They want diversity points, and lucky them based on the girls we’ve got left, they’ll get them. That’s not a bad thing. But… God forbid it sounds too much like it.
If prime marketability is what they’re after… well, something’s gotta give. Apparently. Whether that’ll be Yindra or Aleena, though…
For now, remains to be seen. Aleena claims she’ll hit her up later, once they’ve both had time to think through this bullshit.
Aleena: That is, if this doesn’t make you wanna run for the hills. Wouldn’t blame you.
Or is she just saying that, so she’ll get out of her way? Hard to say.
Yindra doesn’t respond, left standing in the hallway and suddenly feeling more alone than ever.
INT. LUCAS’S APARTMENT - DAY
Riley steps into a similarly lonely entryway, though the promise of company is just around the corner where the light is shining. It’s strange to walk this apartment without feeling like you’re treading on eggshells, but that’s exactly what she does, heading into the living area.
Grace spots her first, currently sitting on the couch going through boxes from the bedroom. She stands when she sees she’s there, more than a little surprised.
Grace: Hi. I didn’t realize you were stopping by. Riley: Yeah. I hope that’s okay. [ holding up a takeout bag ] I figured with everything you guys are working on, you probably aren’t super focused on meal prep. This place is on the way from NYU, so thought I’d grab something. Keep everyone fed. Grace: That’s sweet. Thank you. But I hope you’re not taking too much time. Shouldn’t you be at the show -- Lucas: Riley?
Both women pause, turning to look at Lucas standing in his doorway. He heard her voice and couldn’t be sure he wasn’t going crazy -- although despite his request that she skip coming by, he doesn’t seem upset to see her there.
Lucas: I thought you weren’t coming.
Riley can answer both questions in one. She smiles at Grace, then holds Lucas’s gaze, resolute.
Riley: I’m between shows. I’ve got time.
To her, being there for him is never going to be a burden.
That little detail cleared up, she passes off the food to Grace, encouraging them to dig in whenever they’re hungry. She’ll grab some before she heads back for the evening show, but in the meantime, what can she help with? She’s eager to contribute however she can.
Now that she’s there, Lucas isn’t going to fight her on it. He gestures for her to join him and she happily obliges, the two of them quietly discussing whatever minimal sorting Lucas has managed to accomplish.
Grace dutifully takes the food into the kitchen before returning to her own task, pausing for a moment to listen to Lucas and Riley chat in the other room. It’s reassuring, honestly, to hear how different his tone is with her. Far less unpredictable, and less abrasive, than she’s been navigating the past couple of weeks.
It makes her smile, even just a bit… and in some ways, it takes her back. She settles back onto the couch and goes back to sorting through one of the smaller boxes she pulled from their bedroom closet, a mish-mash of mementos and photographs.
As she lingers on one of her and Kenneth from high school…
EXT. AUSTIN SUBURBS - MONTAGE - FLASHBACK - DAY
Song Cue ♫ ♪ “Alright” as performed by Supergrass || Instrumental
We’re thrown back into the rose-tinted world of the late nineties, fully submerged in the whirlwind of Kenneth and Grace’s young romance. It’s reminiscent of The Notebook, full of whimsy and charm. They walk the halls of school together, Kenneth insistent on showing off his new girl despite her shyness and less-than-popular everygirl status. She attends more games to cheer him on, a joy to both Kenneth on the field and Rachel cheering on the sidelines.
He indulges her hobbies too, though, infiltrating more time in Grace’s sacred space as she cares for the horses on their farm. He listens attentively enough while she bores him with details about them, and the two get playful as she teaches him how to harness and ride one. He also makes a habit of bothering her while she’s trying to do homework, or write in her journals -- he even snatches it from her at one point and starts to flip through it, which she only manages to get back once she’s playfully wrestled him for it and he’s stolen a kiss instead.
Of course, they do that too. Kiss. More and more frequently, the longer they spend together. At school, on the sidelines during games when they’re between plays, after Kenneth takes her home. Deeper and longer kisses in his bedroom, or hers, or in the barn when he’s managed to distract her from the horses. In one shot, he nudges her back against the wall and kisses her hard, Grace’s decorative horseshoe wobbling dangerously on its hook.
Though Grace remains more hesitant than him, and more likely to turn her cheek or shy away from his affection with a bashful grin, Kenneth isn’t deterred. He seems to take it in stride -- more of that hard-to-get game he felt she’s been playing with him since they first met. If he is frustrated, he’s doing a good job of hiding it, and she usually makes up for it with another adorable quirk or embrace a moment later.
It almost feels like a dream. The whole sequence of little moments and memories is so disarming and endearing, it’s almost possible to forget who we’re looking at and what they become. Some things are less clear in hindsight…
In fact, watching the two of them here, they could pass for any of our favorite AMBITION duos. Cute, carefree, full of natural chemistry and the undeniable desire to be near each other.
Feel alright…
EXT. THE HIGH LINE - DAY
Nigel and Zay are on the High Line, taking the chance to share a walking lunch in an otherwise hectic week. They both commiserate about the fact that they’re glad they’re not the ones dealing with funerals and all that, let alone this week.
Zay: I’ve got enough on my mind with this whole transfer gala thing. I told Riley if she needed anything, she can totally hit me up, but… suffice to say, Friar always reminds me that I am extremely lucky to have the family I do. [ elbowing him ] We lucked out in one way at least, huh? Nigel: Oh, yeah… for sure.
The agreement is hollow, but not enough for Zay to notice. He can sense that Nigel isn’t quite zoned in, though, so he tries to gear the conversation towards him. How is this semester going? Any better than last -- he hopes?
Zay: Surely NYU is realizing what they’ve got with you in their ranks, or I don’t know, man. If they don’t choose you, they oughta lose you.
He says it jokingly, but he has no idea exactly how spot on he is. Truly no clue, because of all people, Nigel hasn’t told him one word of his UK ambitions. Not that he couldn’t, in fact, he knows Zay would empower him without hesitation. He’s all about bold moves and asserting your worth.
Yet, even now, Nigel demurs. He opts not to say anything, because when he looks at Zay, all he hears is a relentless echo in his brain.
You are not Zay Babineaux!
He loves Zay, but he can’t understand this. They’ve never been the same.
So Nigel shrugs, redirecting the conversation back to Zay’s big events this week.
INT. L.A. APARTMENT - MAYA’S BEDROOM - DAY
Despite how casually she played things off with Farkle, Maya is far from the pinnacle of productivity these days. She mainly spends her time holed up in her room, pretending to be songwriting but not actually getting anything done. If you asked her, she probably wouldn’t be able to tell you how she spends most of her days. It all feels like a big blur.
Until lighting strikes and brings everything into sharp, stinging focus. Maya sits up from her blanket cocoon when her phone vibrates with a text. She’s already preparing what she’ll say to Farkle to deflect, or assure him she’s busy, but it’s not from him.
It’s Justin.
“Hey hey heyyy, hope everything is good with you! wondering when ur thinking about getting back into the studio? we’ve got hit songs to create for your big EP debut haha”
It’s so casual it’s actually disturbing. As if nothing happened, as if everything between them is exactly how it was before the retreat. It’s so easy for him to brush it off and forget -- no big deal, no consequences.
It’s not that easy for Maya. She’s been doing everything in her power to forget about it, about him, for weeks. But it’s a losing battle, considering he and Melissa were becoming her whole world. Seeing it thrown back in her face is so unsettling, it makes her sick.
Literally. Suddenly sure she’s going to vomit, Maya pushes the blankets off of her in a frantic rush and races for her bathroom.
INT. L.A. APARTMENT - BATHROOM - DAY
She collapses on the tiled floor in front of the toilet, dry heaving and hands shaking. Thankfully, nothing comes out, but that’s mostly because she hasn’t been eating too well lately either. Once the intense bout of nausea subsides, she groans and falls back against the side of the bathtub.
Maya has never felt this way before. So unsteady, affected by the smallest shift in the wind. So… weak.
She hates it. She hates it, and there’s nothing she can do about it. The damage has already been done.
But at the very least, she can protect herself from attacks like this. With vitriol, she reaches for her phone and opens the text thread with Justin, then slams the block button.
Brief moment of empowerment ebbing away, Maya crumbles again, folding in on herself and slouching down to let her forehead rest against the cold porcelain of the bath.
INT. GLOBAL BEAT - OFFICES - DAY
Justin isn’t the only one wondering about Maya’s absence. JOSH MATTHEWS has noticed -- partially because it’s so quiet without her blathering on and on about herself.
And because he’s got outstanding business with her. He never did hear back after he left her that voicemail, even though he’s been checking his messages and missed calls repeatedly. He thought he might be able to catch her in the office, at least let her know he left it in case she just for some reason missed it…
But clearly, that isn’t going to be so simple. Because for weeks now, M.H. has been M.I.A.
Josh clicks into his drafts in his email, where we see he’s crafted an entire email of all his notes to Maya about her demos. Thoughtful, even-handed with praise and constructive criticism, having given each of them more effort and time than Melissa or Justin have thrown their way combined. He wrote them down in the off-chance she rejected him outright, so he could at least give her the material to do with as she pleased…
But he can’t send it. He can’t let go of the hope he might be able to discuss it with her in person.
It’s dangerous to contemplate it here anyway. He goes back to his inbox, skimming through an email that just came through from Ernest Floyd. Based on the amount of exclamation points he included, he’s very excited about whatever he’s cooking up.
“I’ve been thinking a lot about what you said and been putting it to work. I’m putting a bunch of new stuff together, and I can’t WAIT to show the world. I’m using one of those demo tracks you made me last summer -- prepare to be AMAZED!!!!!”
That’s nice. If only anyone on Earth cared. Josh starts to type out a canned encouraging response, just so he knows he’s still in his corner, but he’s distracted as MELISSA SUZUKI returns down the hall from lunch. She gives him a cheerful greeting as she passes. Josh returns it, about to let the moment pass…
Josh: Hey, is Maya coming in today? Or… at all this week? Melissa: Oh. You know, I’m not sure. I don’t think she’s on the calendar. [ playfully ] That’s your job, isn’t it? Josh: No, she isn’t. She hasn’t been. [ a beat ] I just thought maybe you all were meeting off schedule or something. Or she might stop by. I feel like she hasn’t been around in weeks.
Sure hasn’t, Josh. And Melissa knows this -- there’s a moment where her features flicker with recognition, and bizarrely, what looks like a hint of shame -- but she brushes it off a second later.
Melissa: I think she said she was going to take some time out of the studio, actually. Do some workshopping on her own. Josh: Oh. Okay. Melissa: But she should be back soon. I’m sure.
Melissa gives him a smile, then lets it drop. Josh doesn’t question further, but something about it all is still bothering him… if she’s working so hard on stuff on her own, then why is she leaving him on read? He thought they had gotten through their rough patch, that things were in a good state. If it’s not just her being petty for no reason again…
What is he missing?

Introduction to Emaar Digi Homes and the Future of Luxury Living
Emaar Digi Homes is a company that specializes in luxury living. Their goal is to provide comfortable homes for people who want to live a luxurious lifestyle. Emaar Digi Homes has been around since 2008, but they are just getting started with their new age of technology and design. They have already designed some amazing homes in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and London! In this article we’ll talk about what it takes to create a successful luxury home with Emaar Digi Homes:
Customizable Home Automation for Personalized Luxury Living at Emaar Digi Homes
Home automation is the technology that allows you to control your home remotely. It can be used for many purposes, including controlling lights and locks, music and media playback, security cameras, temperature control and more.
Home automation is not just another trend in home design; it's an emerging trend in luxury living that allows you to create a personal style for your home even if you don't have an architect or designer on staff (which most people don't).

Home office spaces are a great place to work and be productive, creative, social and more.
With an Emaar Digi Homes design you can have your own private home office space that is connected to the rest of your home so you don't have to leave when it's time for work. The best thing about this is that it allows the homeowner access to all their favorite activities without having any restrictions on where they can go or what they can do in their own home!
Location Advantage for Luxurious Living at Emaar Digi Homes
Location advantage is one of the major factors that differentiate luxury living from ordinary homes. At Emaar Digi Homes, you will enjoy a location advantage in Dubai with its convenient accessibility to all parts of the city and its surrounding areas. The residential community is located within 10 minutes’ drive from Jebel Ali Port and close to Sheikh Zayed Road, making it easy for you to reach anywhere on time with your car or motorcycle.
Moreover, our project offers many amenities including 24 hour security guard services, swimming pools surrounded by lush greenery gardens at each floor level as well as city views from every apartment window!
Modern Architecture for Contemporary Luxury Living Experience
Modern architecture is a style of architecture that is inspired by the past, but also uniquely suited to the needs of today. The modernist movement began in the late 19th century as a reaction against Victorian-era styles and traditions. The goal was to create buildings that were more functional, durable and efficient than their predecessors while maintaining an aesthetic value that did not clash with current tastes or trends in society.
Modernism's emphasis on functionality has led many architects to embrace new materials such as concrete, steel and glass; these can be combined with traditional building materials such as brick or stone to create highly advanced structures capable of supporting heavy loads without needing extra support structures underneath them like traditional buildings do (such as reinforced concrete beams).
Ease of Living for Effortless Luxury Living at Emaar Digi Homes
Emaar Digi Homes Gurgaon is a leading developer of luxury residential properties. The company has a wide range of luxury residential properties in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and other GCC countries such as Oman and Qatar.
As part of their commitment to providing the best quality homes for their customers, Emaar Digi Homes has partnered with some of the world's leading designers including Pierre-Yves Rochon & Associés (PYR), Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) and Foster + Partners (F+P).

— when he does the ‘lip bite’
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ೃ chars: izuku midoriya, katsuki bakugo, shoto todoroki, and denki kaminari x gn! reader
ೃ  tags: headcanons, fluff and humor
ೃ  warnings: none!
ೃ  my nav  →  my mha writing masterlist  → my katsuki bakugo x reader smau
ೃ  please do reblog if you enjoyed!! it really helps writers and content creators on tumblr!
ೃ  if you want to be a part of my mha taglist. send me an ask!  ♡
ೃ heavily based on a very chaotic convo i had with @noodles-shoto 🥺💓 shoto doing the lip bite will forever live in mine and zay's minds rent free. 😌🖐️
Tumblr media
KATSUKI BAKUGO: there are days when katsuki is a bit more gullible than usual. dare i say, he radiates himbo vibes during certain times of the month. and so, when kaminari jokingly told him that the “lip bite” challenge (in where boyfriends around the world supposedly have a tournament on how much their significant others would swoon over them when they do the lip bite) was the talk of the town, bakugo could not back down without a fight. you bet katsuki came marching up to you in slow strides, his eyes fierce and determined, calling out for your name. “oi (Y/N).” you turn to his attention and lock eyes . his stare is intense, his lips are pursed, and oh. He does it. He does the lip bite.
There is silence in the air for a few seconds before you burst out into laughter, patting your poor boyfriend in the back. “SHHSHSUHSUSH katsuki, babe, please don’t do that again.” “PHAH! I don’t even care about the fucking challenge anymore! Did i make you swoon or what!?” “yes. yes you did.”
Tumblr media
TODOROKI SHOTO: your man can just about pull off anything and he’d still look painstakingly handsome while doing so. This particular situation became exhibit a of as to why you came to that conclusion. when dekusquad dared him to send you a selfie of him doing the infamous lip bite, he immediately agreed and was determined to do what he was told. but, not before he had to go through an terrible wikihow article on how to make the “face” and how to pull it off flawlessly. “it’s missing that extra oomph.” he whispered to himself, scrolling through all these cute filters from an app called snow. several hours have passed before he was finally satisfied with what his lip bite selfie looked like. taking a deep breath and shutting his eyes as he hits send.
His text surprised you as he wasn’t one to send one so out of the blue. you swiped up to open it. dropping your phone in befuddlement because of how handsome shoto looked. It was a selfie of him with his hand on his chin, his upper lip biting the lower tenderly, and his eyes are squinting seductively. you send him a heart eyes meme and proceed to squeal onto your pillow.
what was exhibit b of ‘shoto todoroki looking effortlessly handsome while doing the most obscure and rando things out there for the memes”? Only time will tell.
Tumblr media
IZUKU MIDORIYA: you’ve been sending your favorite memes non-stop to the seaweed-haired cutie. one of those being the lipbite emoji that was way funnier to you than it should be. It became one of your favorite out of context memes in recent time and izuku just had to find a way to resolve your “meme of the month” obsession. And so, during lunch time, he catches your attention by being too cute and wholesome. patting your hand and tracing circles around your fingers so that you can divert your attention to him.
“so (y/n)... about that meme you keep on sending me.” “what about it?” “well…” his gaze is awkward but loving as izuku’s mouth forms into a pout, his teeth partly showing. no inclination at all of what he was trying to do, but you quickly pick up and get the idea. “Izu-kun… are you trying to do the lip bite meme?” “y-yes! did i do it wrong?” god why did he have to be this cute? You want to see him attempt to make a cute face like this again but how can you do that without discouraging him? “nope! In fact, i think we should create another meme! One that’s exclusive to class 1-A! How about izu-kun’s version of the lip bite!?”
Tumblr media
DENKI KAMINARI: denki was the perpetrator of this all. the evil mastermind. The man behind everything. it was he, the all powerful and mighty chargebolt who made this wonderfully stupid meme become so popular in class. everyone has attempted to do it at the behest of kaminari and his wicked charm of asking them to “do it for the memes”. The only one he hasn’t asked yet was you. his favorite person in the entire world.
instead of asking you to do it for him, he wants to do it to you. Maybe he can make you feel giddy or maybe he can make you blush because of how unintentionally handsome and sexy he looked whilst doing the lip bite. however, he doesn’t know how to react and what to feel if he sees that you were unimpressed by his cute little joke.
“(y/n)! (y/n)! He approaches your desk, a glimmer present in his eyes. “What’s up kami-kun?” He clears his throat and tries to lower his eyelashes seductively, glancing at you to try and get a reaction. A desirable reaction. “SoOooo how would you rate my lip bite!?” “wait… that was your version of the lip bite?” “yeah! yeah!” “a 1000/10. Now, please stop spreading the meme and asking everyone else to do it, kami-kun.”

My Adoring Fan Chapter 8
chapter 7
Arella was busying herself with housework that needed to be done. From picking up scattered toys that their youngest hadn’t put away before his brother had taken him out for the day to finishing up laundry from the previous night- she needed something to do to distract herself from worrying too much about her husband. It was just one of his bad days where he couldn’t focus on things very well and the world just didn’t feel real to him. He had moved past the incident that brought their oldest child into their life but the effects of the trauma he endured still plagued him from time to time. It was rare for an episode to be this bad however. He hadn’t had one on this scale since their twins were four. He would get better in a few days; all he needed was rest.
As she turned to pull the clothes out of the dryer, she could hear her phone ringing. Reading the caller id, she sighed as she picked up.
“Azalea, you had better be ringing me for a nonsense reason and not because you’re in Lord Diavolo’s office and I need to come down to get you.” Arella said in a whisper. With the condition he was in today, the last thing she wanted was Mammon hearing her and getting himself worked up.
“Well... at least I’m not in the office this time... but I did get kicked outta homeroom.” The girl said. “Can ya come pick us up... please?”
“Who is ‘us’, darling?”
“Me, ’Relius, Max, and Zulima. We had a good reason this time, Mum, I promise.”
“I’ll be there in a few minutes. Let me see if Dad needs anything and then I’ll be on my way.” After they said goodbye and hung up, Arella stared at her phone. “My stars, I wonder what happened for Aurelius, Max, and Zulima to get kicked out of class as well.” She went into the bedroom to check on her husband. “I have to go get the twins, Zulima, and Max from RAD. Do you need anything before I leave?” She asks as she rubs his shoulder.
Mammon only shakes his head as he looks at the clock. “It’s 8:30 in the morning. What the hell happened?” He starts to sit up but Arella just places a hand on his chest.
“Just stay in bed and rest, Dear. I don’t know what happened exactly, but I’ll handle it when I find out, okay?”
“Fine.” He lets out a sigh. “Let me know when you find out, please.”
“I will. I’ll see you in a bit. I love you.”
“Love ya too, Treasure. Drive safely.”
After that brief exchange, Arella grabbed the keys and left for RAD.
--------------------------------------------------
“So, I want you to tell me exactly what got the four of you kicked out.” Arella asks as she drives them back to their home. “And no lies, please.”
“Well,” Azalea started wondering where exactly she should start, “It all started when I came into class a half-hour late... apparently the old hag took exception ta that. She called me out on bein’ late ‘n I mouthed back ‘n next thing ya know she’s calling me a brat ‘n stupid ‘n forgetful ‘n a delinquent ‘n spoiled- which ta be fair, she’s not wrong ‘bout some of that stuff... but then she took it a step further by callin’ me a half-breed ‘n tryin’ ta take my cane claimin’ it was a weapon so I couldn’t have it on my person ‘cuz -ya know- all the fights ‘n shit I get inta.”
“And then when we tried to stand up for ‘Zay,” Zulima began, “She turned her sights on us.”
“She called us trash and abominations on top of calling us that stupid slur too.” Aurelius leans his head against the passenger side window.
“She said she’s going to write all four of us up saying it was her word against ours so it’s probably going to be wildly fabricated.” Max says as she wrapped her arms around herself. “I have most of the exchange recorded, if you want to listen to it Mrs. Morningstar.”
“I would love to hear it, Max, thank you.” Arella stopped the car, having arrived at home. “We’ll listen to it now.” Max pulled out her D.D.D. and played back the audio. About half way through, Arella’s jaw dropped in surprise. “And she speaks to the three of you this way on a regular basis?” The three half-demons nodded. “And what about you, Max?”
“This is the first time she’s ever said anything like this to me.” The human frowned.
“And it’ll be the last time too if I have anything to do with it. Azalea, is this why you were always late to your homeroom hour last term, honey?”
“Yeah,” she nodded. “I’m tired of bein’ berated ‘n called slurs and insults for an hour... I bet if she was the teacher in any of m’classes, I would have flunked them...”
“We all are,” Zulima says as she hugged herself tighter. “And whenever we try to defend ourselves or each other, she takes it out on us in the one other class we have with her. She almost failed me in world language claiming an airhead like me couldn’t have written such a high-level thesis in Latin of all languages, Auntie. I worked so hard with Uncle Satan on that thesis too! I felt so horrible.”
“And me in potions as well,” Max sighed. “And she gave me the wrong ingredients so I would be assured to fail.”
“I was this close,” Aurelius pinches his fingers together as he talks, “to flunking her Curses and Hexes course last term. I’m telling you, Mum, she’s an absolute witch of a demon. I think if Lord Diavolo hadn’t looked into it himself after I talked with Uncle Lucifer that I would have failed. Her excuse was that when it came to the end of term exam, mine was the last that she graded and she ‘accidentally’ used the wrong key.”
Arella had a look of realization on her face. “I know exactly who this teacher is. She absolutely hated me and your father. She was our curses and hexes teacher too.” She pinched the bridge of her nose. “She never did anything too extreme because we shared a class with three of your uncles and if word ever got back to Uncle Lucifer, she knew there would be hell to pay.”
“So she takes it out on us because of you and Dad?” Aurelius looks over at his mother. “That’s pretty shitty.”
“Not to mention, she’s a racist and a xenophobe on top of it all,” Zulima growled in disgust. “How ugly.”
“Let’s go in now. Please be quiet when you walk in. Dad’s having one of his episodes and it's really bad this time so let him rest. I’ll make lunch in a bit.”
All of the kids nodded as they got out and headed into the house. Immediately Azalea pulled max around giving her a tour of the house while Zulima went up to Azalea’s room to make herself comfortable and wait for Aurelius to stop by his room to grab some spell books so the three of them could work on their magical studies together since there wasn’t really anything else to do.
--------------------------------------------------
As the house tour came to a close Max and Azalea climbed the stairs headed up to the second level where the bedrooms were located.
“You’re having a much better time with the stairs now; I’m starting to notice.” Max says quietly.
“Yeah, I still have trouble with the ones in my room though. With these, the steps are more closed off where the ones in my room have that opening between each step, ya know? With these types of stairs, I can jus’ slide my foot forward until it hits the base of the next step and that way, I can know how far my foot is out and whether it's safe ta step up without bein’ afraid I might slip.”
The human nodded. “Yeah, I get it. Makes sense.”
As they passed through the hall and by Azalea’s parents’ room, Mammon called out to her. “’Zalea come in here please. I wanna talk to ya ‘bout what happened at school.”
“Are ya sure? I know yer havin’ one of them bad days...”
“It’s fine. C’mere please.” Mammon says as he sits up on the bed and runs a hand through his hair.
Max hands Azalea her D.D.D. figuring Mammon might want to hear what was said before heading straight down the to her girlfriend’s room where the other two teens were waiting on them.
“Please tell me you didn’t get yourself and the others kicked out of class because of a fight.” The demon asks as his daughter climbs up next to him on the bed.
“I didn’t. Not this time. The teacher just had a stick up her ass ‘cuz I was late for homeroom... And then things escalated from there. Ta be fair, I kinda had some fault in it ‘cuz I got mouthy with ‘er but still she said somethings... And she then told me ta get outta her class... The others stood up for me ‘n that’s why they got kicked out too.”
“What kinda things?”
“It’s easier if I jus’ play the audio Max took of the exchange.” The half-demon unlocks the phone and plays the audio for her father. She watches him carefully just to see his reaction. It’s not any different from her mother’s except she can feel anger rising within him.
“I can’t believe she’s still workin’ for the school... If I’m rememberin’ her voice correctly, I know exactly who that is and she was decrepit when yer uncles and I were students there. There wasn’t nothin’ I could do right with ‘er. And this has been every day since ya entered this year?” Azalea only nods at his question. “I’m sorry ya gotta go through that, kiddo. We’ll take care of this for ya. Ya know none of that horrible stuff she said ‘bout y’all is true, right?”
“Yeah... but it still bites when people say it.” Azalea leans her head on Mammon’s chest, tucking herself up under his arm as he pulls her into a side hug. “Like all we’ve ever done is just exist and both demons and humans won’t even let us do that! There’s always somethin’ they got a problem with! It's unfair. We’re not demon enough to live here in the Devildom and not human enough to live in the human world. It’s like we don’t belong in either realm. Like we don’t get to be.... happy.”
Mammon would only hug his daughter tighter as he tucked her head under her chin. He wanted things to be different. It always broke his heart to hear his own children- even his nieces and nephews- talk like this. It all stemmed from the oldest generation of demons too- the ones that had existed even before he and his brothers had lost the war, fell from grace, and became demons. The ones that remembered what it was like long before Diavolo started pushing for peace between the three realms, long before the exchange program. Just like the humans they looked down upon, they were just as resistant to change, passing down their ideology to their offspring and so on and so forth as time went on. And the Devildom was doing just that- changing in many ways. From the exchange program that started over 20 years ago that was still going to this day to the advances in technology that put them on par with the human world... as much as the elderly demons might protest it, they couldn’t stop it. Once they all had kicked the bucket, the Avatar of Greed hoped things would get better. They had to.
And the youngest generation was proof of this- unpoisoned by their great grandparents’ and grandparents’ beliefs, Mammon could see how eager they were to accept the changes and the fact that half demons were becoming more frequent among the Devildom's elite- even if his kids themselves couldn’t see it themselves just yet.
As they sat in silence, the demon began purring- not in a way that showed contentment, but rather a deep rumbling purr that resonated through his chest that was often used when a demon was comforting themselves or their young when they were hurt or scared or ill or just upset in anyway shape or form. For his children, it often calmed them enough to put them to sleep for at least a few hours- more if they were sick and needed the rest. It always worked most for Azalea even back when she a baby, especially when she was this worked up and upset about something. He misses those days. The days when the twins and even Cyrus weren’t yet aware of things like racism or discrimination or hatred. Part of Mammon wishes all three of them could have just stayed that age forever.
As the half-demon was falling asleep, she tucked herself closer to her father mumbling a soft “Love you, Papa...” before she was out completely.
“Love ya too, my little Magpie.” He smiles softly before yawning and settling back down for a nap himself.

This is our beginning
Tumblr media
Last night you dreamt you held his hand.
And today your dream came true.
A crescent moon hovers high in the sky, lights glittering everywhere, just like stars dropping to the earth. The moonlight threads in his hair; the wind a soft breeze, singing through the trees and brushing smoothly against your skin. It’s exactly how it was in your fantasy, but everything else feels like a nightmare.
It isn’t like a fairytale; it never is in life.
While in your dreams you were both happily walking back to the dorm after a long day of work, hand in hand, your current predicament is darker, much darker. Your hand is intertwined with his; it feels warm, and slightly sweaty.
No, you’re not surprised. You’re scared, and panicking, albeit internally.
Your hands are tangled together with that of the man you are in love with. But he’s currently dangling off the edge of the Yokohama Bay bridge, and you’re not sure how much longer you can hold on. Are you even strong enough to hoist him up on your own?
You try not to let the panic show, but you are shaking, terrified. Your lungs feel constricted, and the feeling grows, as if you are strangled just by the air around you. Panic has you in a silent grip, with your heart racing and your brain on fire, as though on overdrive. The voice in your head screams at you to think of something, and it is then that you remember you didn’t come here alone.
“Kunikida!”
Your blonde colleague rushes in as he sees you struggle, urgent hands enveloping yours. Perhaps upon seeing the trouble he’s caused, the brunette starts to help himself, pulling his body up and over the ledge, back onto the safety of the ground. The first thing his eyes lay on... is you.
His beautiful eyes are a melt of autumn tones, staring right at you, unmoving. Where those deep, earthy brown beads were usually vacant, right in this moment you catch a glimpse of something different in them— something glistening.
════════════════════════
It’s an hour later and you are sitting across him, your nervous fingers fiddling with each other, eyes darting all over the room, unable to fixate on anything. You notice the empty cans of crab meat in the corner of his room, and the emptied bottles of sake on his table didn’t go unobserved.
You had followed him back into his room to make sure he didn’t pull any more stunts, at least for today. You did not, however, expect him to offer you a drink. You are thankful though, that you get to spend some alone time with him. You harbour feelings for him after all, which is why you jerk at the sound of your name. He chuckles at your reaction, telling you how cute it was.
“Osamu?” you timidly call out, your eyes focusing on the table, unable to bring themselves to meet his brown orbs.
“Yes?”
“I know I can’t stop you from trying to kill yourself,” you begin, your voice still soft and hesitant. You trail off, afraid of what he might think of what you are about to say.
“Go on, I’m listening,” he tells you, taking another small sip of his sake.
You gather motivation from his encouragement and look him in the eyes, determined to let him know how you feel. “I can’t stop you from attempting, but I’ll always be there to keep you from dying,” you declare, your outburst stunning him into complete silence. Dazai stays in place, observing you as you continue. “You may not see any value in living, but I’ll keep trying to make you see your worth.”
Dazai looks at you with a feeling you can’t quite place. You have never been able to read into his actions— you probably never will— and he isn’t one to be open with his feelings either. He is a total enigma. You know not one person who knows of his past before the mafia. Stress rolls right off him instead of sinking in and twisting his thoughts. Being next to him could feel like a vacation most times, with his comedic personality, and yet he sees no value in the act of living. He is anything but an open book. You think you might never be able to understand him, and that rings true of his next action too.
He reaches across the table and takes your hand in his, his touch gentle and assuring. His bony fingers intertwine themselves with your smooth digits and your heart threatens to leap out of your chest. And as he opens his mouth and utters the next few words, your breath hitches in your throat.
Just like in your dream.
And you can’t believe it.

Hi Zai, this is a request for some form of Fyodor content, literally anything, please, thank you and I hope you have a lovely evening 💕
Tumblr media
Ratty—
Luckily for you I actually had this angst prompt ready for Fyodor. I am still unsure how well I can perceive this man of mystery but I shall do my best.
Angst Prompt: "Fyodor loves pretty things.. he likes to preserve them in their beauty and wishes to keep them for all eternity. It works fine with creatures, why not try humans as well?"
JUDGEMENT DAY
Tumblr media
It all started with a fragile yet light-hearted meeting in a café. He took notice of you like an angel had descended from the heavens above. Long, well-groomed silver hair that trailed along your back to stop at your hips. This was God's work, telling him to snatch you right up into his arms.
How dainty and delicate your fingers looked when you grasped your cup of latté. He watched your every movement, from the sway of your hips to the way you sat in your seat. So elegant yet something lingered around you. The Russian was intrigued and taken by that unknown factor.
He must have you in his arms, he thought to himself possessively. It didn't matter what measures he had to take. Fyodor would see to it himself that you would be retrieved with as little damage to your fragile being as possible. The time went by and the clock in the establishment seemed to tick louder than usual. Of course, it was due to him shutting out all other noises of the outside world while his gaze remained fixated on his eternal beauty.
It couldn't wait longer. No it could. He just didn't want to. He rose from his seat and walked over to his prey. Your gaze broke away from your phone that you were tapping away at feverishly. Who was this dark, foreboding looking man? Some kind of chilling aura surrounded you like being in a blizzard. You covered yourself in your sweater to warm up. That reaction made him give a half smile towards you.
"Lovely café isn't it? Are you doing research on something?"
His question made a cold shiver run down your spine. This man was giving you goosebumps but why couldn't you bring yourself to leave? The curiosity was eating away at you. Why did he come to speak to you?
"I am.. researching treatments for an ailment I have."
"May I ask what ailment? For you see, I am a physician. I could be of assistance if you'll have me, Мой дорогой."
You blinked in shock then chuckled softly. It was faint and gentle like feathers carried by the wind. A sound he found soothing to his ears.
"I unfortunately do not know what I have. Would you be able to see me.. today perhaps? I do not have a lot of money but.."
He reached out and took your soft hand in his. You let out a gasp when his cold touch matched yours. The two of you were cold in temperature but to each other, one was slightly warmer than the other. The man was dressed a bit less like a doctor than what you were used to seeing. But you didn't like to judge a book off of its cover before reading it first.
"For a lovely face such as yours, I do not wish to take your money. If I could assist in preserving your beauty that is payment enough."
Taken by his words, you let him whisk you away. You knew no one. No family. Nor friends. No one would realize you left this world and yet this doctor wanted to keep you alive.
All you could remember was meeting the Russian then blacking out after accepting his invitation to being diagnosed. Your body felt cold and stiff when you came to, a dimly lit room of candlelight. Then a familiar voice sounded nearby.
"You’re awake. I have your results if you want to see them."
It felt difficult to sit up from where you laid on a soft bed. You felt his hand take yours as he brought his other hand behind your head then moved it to your back to assure a comfortable shift.
"Thank you... I didn't get your name, doctor."
"You may call me Fyodor, my lovely."
That name gave you a rich and warm taste from how velvet his voice flowed. You took the papers in your grasp to carefully analyze. Eyes scanning then stopping on the disease name.
"ALS?.."
"Formally called, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis."
You blinked, feeling too stunned to read on after seeing that it was incurable. A fatal disease that would eat away at your lifespan. Although Fyodor had no issue going on about details of the symptoms and what the disease effected in the body.
"What you have is a progressive neurological disease characterized by the destruction of nerve cells that are responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movement. Examples of voluntary muscle movement include chewing, walking, talking and breathing."
Your blood felt like it turned to ice. A lump in your throat making it difficult to speak. There's no cure. Your body was deteriorating from the inside out. Waiting for your expiration date. In a way you felt that you knew it all along. You chose to play blind into not accepting it until now. A faint ghostly smile upon your pale lips as you looked to Fyodor with light blue eyes that were clouded in grey.
"I appreciate the diagnosis. Now, as for payment.. I want to.. offer you my body when I die."
He didn't ask you why nor did he want to deny your offer. It was God's work after all. He truly sent this angel down for him to keep. It perfectly aligned with what was intended.
"How long do I have?"
"A few months. But you knew that didn't you, прекрасный?"
You nodded solemnly in defeat. This disease in particular gave people who had it an average lifespan of two to five years before they died. You already lived out almost two years since diagnosed. Your time was almost gone.
"How will you live out the rest of your days?"
"I want them to be with you. It's strange.. but I feel that you'll see to it that I do not die.. alone."
How sweet and tender you were to him. Those words like silk from your gentle voice. So weak and fragile like an endangered species. He took you into his home and saw to just that.
The days you spent with him were like a lucid dream. He would play the cello and lull you to sleep at night or play with your silver locks, caressing them in between his fingers. Fyodor would take you to ballroom dance in an empty room. His hand delicately hugging your hip while the other hand folded like a puzzle piece into yours.
That evening when you hummed along with his cello playing was the last breath you took. No final words, for you had already said everything that needed to be heard. He paused his playing to bring you into his arms to feel your heart slow to a stop, your body getting colder by each minute your organs failed to work. A sickening smirk revealed his teeth like a ravaging wolf starving for years for a delicacy to drop in front of him.
"Now.. let us get to work on maintaining your beauty. For all eternity. Milaya.."

Shadows Rising: A Reaction Post
Short, mostly non-spoilery version:  I liked it overall.  I give it a solid B, maybe a B+.
I was disappointed in how little Nathanos and/or Sylvanas content there was, but I think proclamations of the ship’s doom are premature.
I’m intrigued by the first rumblings of new character development for certain characters, especially Anduin, Alleria and Turalyon.
I was rooting for Talanji so much.  She’s great. Zekhan is a cinnamon roll too pure for this world.  Sira was kind of boring. Fairshaw is so darn heartwarming I can’t stand it. I like Bwonsamdi more now. The lack of Wrathion is unsurprising but unfortunate. Nothing new with Tyrande but she’s already poised for major development in Shadowlands.
Much longer, spoilery version below.
This ended up being more of a ramble than an essay, but there’s a lot of disjointed thoughts pinging around in my head, so let’s dive in.
Overall, I enjoyed Shadows Rising.  Was it the best book ever?  No.  Not even the best Warcraft book ever.  But it was an enjoyable read.  It’s always a treat to get into the heads of characters we mostly know in passing from in-game events.  There are internal, emotional beats that cannot easily be explored in the game, and the books are a way to build the world and the characters in a more introspective, slow-paced manner.  I like that.  (That’s not to say there are no action scenes, because there definitely are.)
Talanji, Jaina, Zekhan, and Anduin were all written well and sympathetically.  Maiev’s only in a couple scenes, but she felt off to me.  Nathanos was very in-character, in all his snide, sour glory.   Flynn and Mathias are great together.
The pacing was fine.  The descriptions were good, and it all felt grounded in the game world (i.e. landmarks, ambiance, the ridiculous amount of stairs in Daz’alor...)  Each of the Horde leaders got a moment or two in the spotlight.  Despite a fair amount of chapters about Anduin, Alleria, Turalyon, and Jaina, it still felt like a Horde-centric book to me.  Not that that’s a bad thing.
Prologue:  Gayness detected on page 8!  And it’s even something I kind of inadvertently predicted.  In my reaction post for Before the Storm I wrote, “ In this book alone, it would have been so easy to have that blacksmith bringing a helmet as a gift to his long-lost Forsaken husband instead of friend.”  That’s basically what we have here.  I don’t know if they were married, and neither were blacksmiths, but the Westfall moonshiner describes one of the Forsaken slain in Arathi as “the best man I ever knew and loved.”  Tada!  See how easy it was?  Add Jago x Wilmer to the growing list of LGBT rep in Azeroth.  (Even if they’re super minor characters in the long run, it’s still great to see.)
There might be some kind of parallel to be drawn between Alleria failing Anduin (by not finding/killing Sylvanas) and Nathanos failing Sylvanas (by not killing Bwonsamdi) but my brain is too overloaded from binge-reading to articulate it right now.  Both failed their king or queen, but both were also given nearly impossible tasks.
Alleria and Turalyon are definitely being set up as antagonists.  We are clearly supposed to side with Jaina on this, and be uncomfortable (if not outright horrified) at their torture methods.  It’s especially disturbing how they use their respective void and light powers to accomplish their goals.  I mean, on one hand it’s great that both sides of the great cosmic divide can work together, and their marriage seems stronger than it was for awhile there, but yeesh...can you not torture people?  I know, ends justify the means, slippery slope, greater evil, blah blah, but still...that’s not okay.  It’s yet another sign that the Light is not necessarily good (or the void necessarily evil).
I welcome conflict within the Alliance, though.  That’s been the Horde’s thing for long enough.  Time to see how the blue side deals with its rifts.
In chapter 2 Nathanos is annoyed when a dreadtick flies by his head.  What, was it too similar to a bird for his liking?  Heh.
All that time in Nazmir, and we didn’t get to see a single crawg!  Harumph.
It took three chapters and 39 pages to finally get something from Nathanos' perspective, and he was much more scarce going forward than I had hoped.  The bits we did get from his perspective were great and in-character, but I wanted to get into his head more.  Most of his scenes were from the POV of Sira or the troll villain instead, and while Apari was a good character I find Sira to be pretty one-dimensional.
I kind of got paternal vibes from Nathanos toward Sira, though.  He was like, “I’ve been undead a lot longer than you; I know how to handle the bloodlust and such.  Get it out of your system at appropriate times but learn to control yourself.  There’s more to (un)life than slaughtering people.”  She herself, though, was just “Rawr, I hate everything and want to kill anything that moves.”  I mean, I get that she’s been through some traumatic stuff, but I didn’t find myself invested in her at all.
Page 42, as a bunch of trolls are about to be slaughtered:  "Hungry birds circled, expectant of a big meal, and Nathanos so hated to disappoint."  WHAT?  Nathanos wanted to do something nice for BIRDS?  I know, the phrasing fits with his dry, sarcastic sense of humor, but considering the running joke about him hating birds, it still made me go, “Huh?”
Chapter 5 (and later on, as it turns out):  Zekhan having a soft spot for kids is too precious for this world.
Page 51:  Thalyssra's eyes were "sparkling as she gazed across the room at Lor'themar."  Awwwwwww.   There was a surprising amount of ship fodder in this book overall, with Lor’themar x Thalyssra, Turalyon x Alleria, Fairshaw, and Zehkhan x Talanji all getting a moment or two (or more.)
Chapter 6:  Anduin says, "Turalyon, take Alleria Windrunner and investigate these deaths."  You know, Alleria...YOUR WIFE?  I don't think you need to say her last name there, genius.
While I’m being snarky about the editing, there were at least two times where the word “grieves” was used instead of “greaves.”  I spotted a couple other little things that a better editor (or one with more time, maybe it was rushed, I don’t know) would have caught.
Chapter 7:  More matter-of-fact LGBT inclusion for minor characters, this time a lesbian troll couple who want to marry.  Yes, thank you Blizzard, keep it up.
Chapter 8:  If you’re going to make the “Zappy Boy” nickname for Zekhan canon, having Bwonsamdi be the one to wink at the camera and use it was a great decision.  I can totally imagine him saying it.
We learn the name of Varok’s wife/Dranosh’s mother:  Remda.  Although I read elsewhere that the vision Zekhan saw of the Saurfang family in the afterlife was just Bwonsamdi’s B.S., it was still cool.
Chapter 13:  Nathanos wearing cologne?  Love it.  And it’s not even to cover up the rotting smell, because apparently his new body doesn’t stink like some undead; it just doesn’t smell like a living person, either, and some find it unnerving.  So he wears cologne.  That’s such a delightful little detail, and surprisingly considerate of him.
Sira complaining about bugs:  "We'll be eaten alive."  Uh no, you'd have to BE ALIVE for that to happen. Tsk.
Nathanos being called "the pale rider" makes me think of old cowboy movies.  Like, “You greenhorns better clear out; the Pale Rider is comin’ to town and there’s gonna be trouble.  Go wake up the sheriff.”
Sira says that while on the voyage to Zandalar the dark rangers liked to tell the tale of how Nathanos was promoted to Ranger Lord by Sylvanas.  I'm surprised he lets them gossip like that!  His quests in vanilla made it seem he wanted to keep those parts of his past on the down-low, at least from the player.
Chapter 14:  Thrall's second kid is Rehze.  *blink*  Reh-zee?  Rez?  Ruh-zay?  I guess she’s not named after anyone.  After he named his son Durak (sort of after Durotan) I assumed he’d continue the pattern with kid #2.  Maybe she’s named after one of Aggra’s relatives.  (Later I read on Wowpedia that the author actually said she dislikes the “fan service” trend of naming children after other characters so she just picked a random orcish name.  I don’t think it’s fan service, because lots of real-life people do it, but okay.  Fair enough.)
Speaking of orcish names, there’s an orc page helping out the council named Gunk.  Like, what you clean out from under your fingernails after gardening.  Gunk.  LOL
Aww, that’s no fun...Maiev's wearing a cape trimmed in white fur, not daggers.  What happened to her impeccable/deadly fashion sense?
Chapter 16:  Zekhan starting to clap at Talanji's speech and then stopping and shrinking back when he realized no one else was applauding was so freaking adorable.
Chapter 17:  Fairshaw, full steam ahead!!!  Their chemistry is everything I hoped it would be.  Learning a little about Flynn’s tragic past was both fascinating and heartbreaking.  (We learned his mom’s name: Lyra Fairwind.  R.I.P.)
Chapter 18:  Proodmoore keep has a gallery with floor to ceiling oil paintings of the Proudmoore family, extended family, and beloved friends.  It now includes Anduin.  I can’t help thinking that, in a different timeline, Arthas’ portrait would have been there.
Will wonders never case?  Ji Firepaw actually gets to do stuff!!!  GASP!
"Thrall understood that to other humans Wrynn was said to be pleasing-looking, but to the orc, Anduin simply looked like a small, pink boy swallowed by clunky armor."  So it’s canon that Anduin is good-looking in-universe.  But LMAO at Thrall’s description.
Chapter 22:  From Shaw’s POV, "These odds ranked pretty low...  Maybe just above the time he had relied completely on a shoddy network of spies embedded in a cheese business."  OMG leave Elling Trias alone!  He did his best!  LOL
Shaw wanting to hang out in a mountain meadow and whittle bird calls (perhaps even with a special someone) was so touchingly normal.  That’s the kind of characterization that the books are so much better at than the game.
I actually like Bwonsamdi more after reading this.  Not that I disliked him before, but I didn’t have a strong sense of him due to not playing Horde as much in BFA.  He’s a well-done gray character:  not good, not evil, insightful but a smartass, part of the great cycle, out for himself but also taking his duties seriously (saving troll souls from the Maw.)
I’m not entirely sure that we needed as much from Thrall’s POV as we got.  I mean, sure, he’s a familiar character with ties to a lot of others, so it was easy to drop him into situations, and his ties to Jaina made cross-faction communication easier, but he didn’t seem as relevant to the lore of Zandalar and the Shadowlands as some other characters.
Maiev seemed OOC, especially in the Stockades scene.  I know one of the themes of the book was “people change,” and I suppose I should be happy that she has a more moderate viewpoint nowadays, dialing back the Lust For Vengeance Meter from eleven to maybe a five or a six, but it didn’t feel like Maiev.  Especially because her message of “maybe don’t go overboard with this vengeance thing” was aimed at Tyrande, of all people, someone who Maiev has had quite legitimate reasons to dislike for a very, very long time.  I could see her maybe mellowing out a little in front of fellow Wardens, but Tyrande?  Eh, it didn’t feel right to me.
No surprises from Tyrande in this.  She’s still steely cold, vengeance-obsessed, consumed by anger.  Not that I blame her, but it’s not healthy.  I know we’ll be exploring her situation more in Shadowlands, so this was more of a reminder/reinforcement of where she is right now.  It was kind of funny how Thrall, Baine and Calia tried to talk to her and she just gave them the stink eye and the silent treatment, though.
I’m fine with Anduin exploring his dark side a bit more, as long as they don’t go overboard with it.  I like him as an earnest, good-hearted character.  It’s only natural to test your limits, though, especially in times of crisis.  Power corrupts, and he’s got plenty of it, both politically and magically, so I can understand Jaina and Mathias being a bit uneasy.  Add to that the increasing themes about the Light not being as benevolent as we originally assumed, and there’s potential for interesting plot there.  In the end I want Anduin to stay firmly on the side of good, empathy, compassion, etc., but a deviation into the shadows along the way isn’t a bad thing for the story.
I imagine every single person who read about Anduin sneaking off to the Lion’s Pride Inn in Goldshire smirked about that place’s reputation on certain RP realms.  I was surprised he didn’t find scantily-clad elves and draenei dancing on the furniture.  And then it turns out Jaina was there, too.  Awkward!
Why, oh why couldn’t we have had a scene with Anduin and Wrathion hanging out (incognito, of course) in a tavern?  That was their thing in MoP, and now with Anduin desperately wanting to get away from his duties for awhile and soak up some tavern ambiance it would have been perfect.  Let Anduin show off the best taverns Stormwind has to offer.  Even though Wrathion was as much a guest at the Tavern in the Mists as Anduin was, he acted like he owned the place and Anduin was his guest, so let them turn the tables and have Anduin play host.  There could be jokes about how he better not punch Wrathion again or they’ll get kicked out for starting a bar fight.  They could have still seen the young recruits, ran into Jaina, etc.  But Anduin really needs a buddy to hang out with right now.
And you can’t tell me after Nya’lotha fell Wrathion just disappeared again and never at least visited Stormwind to tell grandiose tales about how he stabbed an Old God, it was so heroic, and he wasn’t scared at all, and those mean adventurers were so quick to believe he’d been corrupted, but he hadn’t, and did you know Azshara was there?  And then N’Zoth almost won but KERPOW LAZERS and oh Anduin you should have seen it, etc. etc. etc.
I should be used to being disappointed about Wrathion’s absence by now, but there are SO MANY MISSED OPPORTUNITIES!
Sigh.  Moving on.
Being exposed to spoilers meant I wasn’t fooled by it, but it was still a deft bit of writing to have the dark rangers drink poison when cornered by Horde soldiers, then mention Nathanos having a vial in his coat, which he drinks when defeated--making the unspoiled reader assume he’s killing himself--only for it to be a kind of liquid hearthstone attuned to Sylvanas.  Had I not known that he survived the book I would have freaked out there.
So, like, was Bolvar just sitting there on the ground awkwardly eavesdropping while Sylvanas and Nathanos talked/argued?  Or did he use that time to sneak away unnoticed?  LOL
Which brings us to the epilogue that’s caused so much hand wringing and wailing from my fellow Blightrunner shippers.  It wasn’t the openly sentimental interaction between them that I had hoped for, but I honestly didn’t read it as the doom of the ship.  A bump, at worst.
[If you’re not interested in the relationship between Nathanos and Sylvanas, or if you’re one of those people who simply hate his character, you can skip the rest of this post.]
First of all, Sylvanas had just broken the Helm of Domination.  That was a hugely significant thing to do, both for her personally and in the cosmic scheme of things.  Her state of mind at that moment had to have been in a turmoil.  So if she was a little distracted and tense, I think that’s quite understandable.
Second, I saw other fans being upset that she threatened/wanted to strike him.  That’s not how I read it at all.  “Sylvanas could strike him, scream and hollow out his soul, but it would not correct the failing.”  She’s not saying she wants to do that, just that she could.  The instinct to lash out in violence is ingrained in all the undead; death knights have to do it or they go mad.  So for her mind to go there in a moment of high emotion seems natural to me.  She doesn’t actually attack him or verbally/physically threaten him.  People say things like “I could have killed my brother for eating the last slice of cake” or “I could’ve strangled my co-worker when she spoiled the ending of the movie” and it’s not literal.
Third, she doesn’t say “go away, I never want to see you again.”  She says “Go where you will, Nathanos, but do not be idle” and “I expect you will return to me with means to prevent [Bwonsamdi’s] meddling.”  So essentially she’s saying, “Fine, go home, regroup, come up with Plan B, and if it’s not possible to destroy Bwonsamdi at least concentrate on countering him.”  Also note that she still considers the operation to be theirs, not just hers:  “This was a blow, but one she felt sure they could overcome.”  That tells me she expects to work with him in the future.
Fourth, and granted this is before she learns of his failure, but she’s clearly happy to have him there when he first arrives.  “’My champion,’ Sylvanas purred.  ‘Your timing could not be better.  Tell me of your victory as we take these first steps together.’”  She wanted to cross into the Shadowlands with him at her side.  Hell, that’s bridal imagery...crossing the threshold together, and all that.  The only reason she tells him to go is because his work isn’t done and she still needs him on Azeroth.  But she explicitly says “I expect you will return to me.”
Fifth, in the line from her POV about how “the unjust ladder of their lives must be dismantled,” the “they” she’s referring to is all of the denizens of Azeroth, true, but I think there’s also a tinge of bitterness there as she looks back on her own life, and her life with Nathanos.  Destiny has not been kind to either of them.
Sixth, she says “My path lies ahead” as she prepares to cross into the Shadowlands.  It’s a reminder of the scale of the forces she is trying to manipulate.  When faced with the potential fates of all the souls in the universe, her own regrets are insignificant.  She can’t stay on Azeroth any longer, even if some part of her does want to just chill out on a beach somewhere with Nathanos and watch his blighthounds chase seagulls.  She thinks “It would not be easy, but then, her mission required great sacrifice.”  Like leaving him behind.
Even this part can be interpreted different ways:  “She heard the note of hope in his voice, fragile as a fledgling dropped from the next.”  Putting aside the humor of comparing bird-hating Nathanos to a fledgling, we don’t get a value judgment about the comparison.  Sylvanas doesn’t think about him sympathetically, wanting to protect him in a vulnerable moment, but she also doesn’t think, “Geez, what a pathetic weakling.”  It goes back to that bit in Warbringers about how she can’t kill hope.  And she can’t.  Here, again, no matter how bleak things are, no matter how displeased she is at his failure, he still has hope.  And she needs that, whether she believes it or not.
When she “flicked her fingers, as if ridding herself of a speck of muck” that can be interpreted as her thinking of him in a derogatory way, but she was also talking about Bwonsamdi in the same breath so I can choose to believe that’s who she was being dismissive of.
I don’t know.  I get that some of the language is discouraging.  She describes him as having “blubbering lips” and she’s definitely not happy with him.  But these two have been through a lot, and their bond has remained strong.  I’m sure this isn’t their first fight, or the first time he’s disappointed her.  This isn’t the end for them.  Just another bump on a very long highway they’ve traveled together.
...
OMG this has turned into a monster of a post, rambling all over the place.  I hope it’s coherent enough to follow.  I’m just in lore overload at the moment (and enjoying every second.)  I know I’m forgetting things I wanted to talk about, too, but I’m going to go ahead and post it as it is.

Story time #2
This particular story time took place in high school: I’m a cheerleader and it’s my junior year. So people are paying attention in ways I didn’t realize. Defense mechanism. I wasn’t accustomed to being visible yet low key I knew things would never be the same. Even though my eye was on one guy there’s another opponent that had entered the game. Back in the day you could say I always found myself attracted mostly to dudes I knew I had no chance with. At that point I’d never had a boyfriend and even though I was of dating age guys weren’t lining up around the block. Yet sometimes I was proven wrong. So the opponent was Zay. Til this day I don’t know his real name. The only reference I have is by what others called him. He played on the football team and he was younger, short, chocolate and not my type lmao. Let’s just say when I wasn’t attracted to someone I avoided them. This chile took it upon himself to let it be known he wanted me. No he didn’t tell others well except for the time he asked my brother where my classes were he was consistent. That’s the key word in this story...hold on to it. The only consistency I knew in my life at that time was Jesus had my back, my family was solid or so I thought, teachers were petty and that I would graduate out of that hell hole the following year. Anyway, Zay was a guy I had never encountered before. What I could tell he was a guy then that knew what he wanted. Wasn’t ready for that by no means. Zay, if I’m honest, had charm, confidence and personality in a way that my future ex boyfriend didn’t. Zay would one day pass by one of my classes by mistake and literally decide to walk by numerous times lol!! Until I looked his way. Looking back its cute but then I wasn’t too intrigued. I mentioned earlier eventually he asked my brother if he knew where my classes were. Ummmm how would he know. I barely knew where his were. A common theme with Zay is he would eventually find me one way or another and make sure I knew he was always present. Not to mention a phone call. My 16/17 year old mind: why can’t I get this from guys I like. There was the 2nd visit where we were in the hall way and he brought me to the stairway. Just random: he wanted to speak a bit and hug me. I was trying to get out so no one would assume nothing. People nosey and talk too much. But I loved hugs. Back then he didn’t get no points for that. 3rd interaction another hall way visit and he grabbed my hand talking sweet nothings. He was trying to follow me, ask questions and I briefly smiled. I let my guard down slightly or was I basking in a reaction I’d never had. Now this is where things get confusing. I have no clue of when I gave him my number lol!! At some point we talked and the only thing I remember from the conversation is that he wanted to know where I lived so he could see me on a break. I was like scccccuuuurrrrr no sir. I soon became concerned. That was off putting to me. Another visit I can recall is when he watched me practice for my cheerleading competition routine. A cheermate made me aware. He couldn’t stay long due to my coaches. BAM there he is lowkey waiting. We talked briefly. Again I didn’t know how to deal but went along with it. The last hall way rendezvous was now something I should’ve known was common place. Just couldn’t accept it as “normal”. This time it was unexpected and something I would remember forever. As he’s talking to me and again I don’t know exactly what he said but soon enough I’m against the wall and he decides to kiss my neck. So I soon discover the art of seduction and this is a spot that is of great sensitivity ✅. Made a sound smh ✅✅. I thought I was a thug lol!! He looked at me surprised and thought let me do this again. I started to think something was wrong with him. I lowkey liked it shockingly. We got caught 😳💢. Of course I wasn’t thrilled by that. I wanted the attention to stop and he move on. Welp at some point those wishes came true. Oh darling the things we come to appreciate down the line. As far as the whereabouts of Zay no one knows. Seemed like a cool dude

Expressed a stronger sense of hope near the end of the show.
Her parents had a toxic possibly abusive marriage
Analysis:
Maya Hart loves her friends more than anything, has a habit of getting into trouble, and loved art. She was also deeply shaped by her father’s abandonment and her mother’s emotional neglect. She struggles with a fear of abandonment, anger, a sense of disconnection and views herself as a fundamentally broken person. This is established right away in Girl Meets World (1x01) she assumes Cory think she is not good enough for Riley and believes thinks he would be right to think that. Maya says on more than one occasion that she doesn’t get her hopes up, and doesn’t view the future as good. In Girl Meets Forgiveness Project (2x23) we see how much guilt, anger, self-blame and shame Maya had based on her Father leaving her and having not been there for her before he left
Maya is generally over realistic she believes her view of the world should be down to earth, practical and this often ends up as negative. This comes in a large part from her mother’s continuous inability to accept reality. Katy calls herself an actress when this has never been her job. We see how this affects their relationship and stresses Maya out in Girl Meets Maya’s Mother (1x07) and Girl Meets Master Plan (1x18). In Girl Meets I Do (3x11), she describes the aftermath of her father leaving them, “Just ‘cause I could always hear my mother crying in her bedroom. I’d try to go in and stop her from crying… but I couldn’t.” The fear of having to go through that again with the person who is meant to watch her falling apart, slows her ability to enjoy and move forward during Katy and Shawn's wedding.
However, her impulsivity and creativity often bump up against this practicality when she feels vulnerable like in the first episode or Girl Meets Hollywood (3x18) or when Riley and she get themselves wound up in some kind of scheme like in Girl Meets Farkle's Choice (1x19) or Girl Meets STEM (2x26). Her identity is linked to a fundamental level to her relationship with Riley. In Girls Meets Upstate (3x06) Maya explains how Riley’s family gave her a sense of safety and that she sees protecting Riley as her job. Maya pretty much always takes Riley's side even when she doesn't agree with her perspective. When Riley wants to take away the bay windows in Girl Meets Bay Window (2x29) Maya is deeply unhappy at the idea of losing this and multiple times through the show while she tries to be chill and realistic but when Riley tries to change their relationship she tends to get very emotional. In Girl Meets Yearbook (2x12) Maya tries hard to prove to Riley that they need her for who she is even dressing up as her, Maya loses herself in that identity though wanting to be things that Riley is that she doesn't know how to be.
Maya is deeply protective of all her friends. The hard exterior she uses to protect her own friends allows her to not usually be as affected during fights like in Girl Meets Riley Town (2x17). With Farkle, Maya has a very "only I can pick on him" kind of approach, being very upset when others treat him badly but enjoy teasing him with their other friends. He is flirty with both her and Riley and they generally don't mind, Farkle also doesn't really mind when they like anyone else and dating Smackle himself. He considers them his girls stating he loves them both Maya seems to take great comfort in this. They are pretty different in a lot of ways but in general play off each other well balancing a lot of the others fears, a good example of their relationship is in Girl Meets Money (2x27) when she helps him understand that not having lots of money is fine because she knows how to be happy with what she does have.
Lucas is also one of the few people who can go toe to toe with her in trading jabs and sarcasm. He's not easily bothered by her and this annoys Maya a lot. In the beginning, I think it's trying to push him away to some extent as he drops into their life quickly and Riley and Farkle keep him around. He gains Maya’s trust through showing her he will protect her friends and him showing Riley and Farkle kindness. Their trading of jabs becomes a lot more friendly. She develops a crush on Lucas, later on, it's confusing as Riley also a crush on him. It causes a lot of emotions and confusion between all three of them. Maya later works out that her emotions were confused with overlapping feelings for him, Riley, and Josh Matthews. This is also tied to the plot about Maya's identity confusion.
Maya's relationship with Smackle is friendly throughout the whole show. They are never particularly close but they do like each other. She and Zay hit it off pretty well both being rebellious, she helps him put his focous on his friends. Her relationships with the other Matthew's are also deeply important. Cory acts as her first real father figure, and Topanga fills in a lot of the mothering gas Katy left. She cares for and likes Auggie a lot, but tends to have the same blind spots as Riley sometimes sees him as a bit annoying or doesn't take him into account. She also has a deeply moving scene of Ava helping her through her parents' breakup.   Her crush on Josh, in my opinion, is a bit unhealthy. While there are only four years between them they have a huge maturity gap. When they meet he is a junior in high school, Maya is middle schooler essentially a child though he doesn't explicitly say he likes her but does call her pretty. In Girl Meets Ski Lodge (3x12/13) he does return Maya's romantic affection which is creepy, he is in college and she is a freshman in high school.  From Maya's point of view, it's a natural crush on someone too old but because it ends in a "someday" I think is not a good way for her to move forward. It comes across too close to waiting until she's legal, and can stop her from fining a different partner. I also think this shows an odd pattern, her other major crush being Lucas neither of them is people she could have. They are also both very linked to Riley while not inherently bad it's interesting.
Shawn and Maya become close quickly, Riley notices that she and Shawn might be experiencing similar problems and quickly forces them to see this too. Riley was correct they both experienced abandonment, poor parental relationships and live in comparably low-income situations. They realize their the same, in the context of these shared histories and in reacting to it as being hyper-protective of their friends, impulsivity and anger. Shawn lets her know that he wants to stop anyone from growing up like that, and through his actions lets her know he wants to make explicitly her life better. They form a father-daughter relationship culminating in his marrying her mother and adopting her. Shawn helping her and caring for her I think is one of the pivotal aspects of her rising self-esteem and eventual ability to say “I’m not giving up hope just yet. I just got it.” in Girl Meets Hurricane (2x9)
In the third season Maya makes some real personal strides her outbursts decrease in severity, she starts preparing her relationships and does better in schools. However she also shifts her presentation to an “un-Maya” way, the others frame it as “becoming Riley” in Girl Meets Triangle (3x05), Girl Meets Upstate (3x06), & Girl Meets Real Maya (3x07). There is some truth, but there is also a kind of troubling implication that there isn’t internal personal growth that can come from multiple influences. I think the others probably are worried by the smaller changes she makes like say her clothes, but that Riley sees this in Maya doing better in school and behaviour I think is a little bit of Riley's own insecurity showing through. In Girl Meets True Maya (3x07) when Maya describes her impulse control as a version of Riley, this is slightly sad as the "good" in her for some reasons can only come from Riley and not be an integral part of who she is. Maya was able to have positive growth because of the influence of everyone, her friends at school, the Matthews, Shawn, and her semi-repaired relationship with her mother. Another huge aspect of this was her starting to have closure with her father, and being older. Maya is a deeply headstrong girl who loves fiercely and finds a lot of comfort in art. She shows quite a bit of growth and starts to work through her trauma in a semi-realistic model, though it would be important for her to continue to address head-on. Maya works hard to grow up and is an amazing friend and family member.

001 for Maggie!! About Rucas!
werk werk werk lets go lets go lets gooooo!
Riley & Lucas James
When I started shipping it if I did: okay so like… technically I cannot answer this question because I… like… made the show so fkdsjhgkjdfgd BUT. interestingly enough i’ve actually said before that if I were a viewer of AAA and not the creator, i would be very cautious about RL. like i think it would take me a while to warm up to the possibility of them (as well as lucas, bc i think the “seemingly broody snarker with a heart of gold and is secretly soft” can be HORRIBLY done), but i think around 103 i would start to change my opinion about lucas (and then would be definitive about him after 105 from the way he is with isa), and then i think i’d really lock into RL at the end of 107 with their convo in the aud where she’s like “maybe you don’t have to do everything alone” and hes like “… no maybe not.” that’s my genuine honest feeling on how i’d approach it as a viewer
My thoughts: many thoughts… many thoughts head empty… i guess like the entire show are my thoughts FJDSKLGFDG but i will say i’m very excited for the rest of S2 for them, as well as going into the next season. it’s gonna be really fun to see y’alls reactions and hopefully we’ll come out on the other side together ✊🏻
What makes me happy about them: oh so much… how riley is so skilled at catching lucas off guard and seeing through his defenses from like day 1 (and evidenced early on i.e. the way she just plops down at their lunch table and he literally stops eating gkfdhgkjdsfh), how deeply they respect one another and see the other for what they are capable of rather than how they view themselves with all these imperfections and limitations, how lucas encourages riley to stand up for herself and be empowered and not downplay herself, and conversely how riley is slowly but surely changing lucas’s perspective on the world and what he deserves from it and that romance can be real, touch can be soft and non-threatening, love isn’t inherently a weakness to be taken advantage of but something delicate and lovely and a source of power (i.e., i think that lucas’s growth and interactions with riley also influence how he reevaluates his friendships with like dasher and stuff like that – something you’ll definitely see evidence of in 209)… could go on probably
What makes me sad about them: oh well like. how self-destructive lucas is at this point and how he literally cannot fathom that people care about him – let alone romantically that’s like a whole other ballpark. how their own insecurities allowed external opinions to detour their dynamic, although understandable. the trickiness that exists currently where riley, just being a generally forgiving and optimistic person, is constantly being told that she needs to give up on lucas and that there is a sort of question she and probably us as viewers start to wonder of like… is it even worth it? whether lucas deserves riley’s devotion is certainly up for debate, and it’ll be interesting to see if he addresses the mess of the last few months moving forward… but then it’s tricky too, because much like the position dylan was put in, i think in some ways riley does need to still have faith in lucas, because if she doesn’t then who will, and it’s kind of like… very complex. very messy, much to analyze and pick apart and perhaps account for at the end of the day… but that’s the kind of complexity i love in relationships (provided steps are taken to amend them to the best of their ability and respect always remains intact), so it’s no surprise they have all this fkdshkfjdhgkjdfshdh.
Things done in fanfic that annoys me: well obvious fanfic doesn’t really exist, but i’ve been in fandom long enough to be able to say EXACTLY what would happen if ambition were a huge fandom like tw, glee, etc. the first thing that would annoy me the most would be an exaggeration of rl’s worst traits to make them like a pairing that they aren’t – key being making lucas more aggressive, dominant, and like genuinely disrespectful, and then making riley like an innocent wallflower pure goody two shoes or whatever. like that kind of characterization really strips down their complexity as characters (and is also like just wrong FDJSKFDSLG like one thing i’m excited for in S3 is the chance to really explore what they’re actually LIKE when like… depression isn’t warping their personalities FJDSKFLDSGJ and also how they bring out certain traits in one another). i also feel like any sort of like… overt tooth-rotting romanticism would feel really ooc for them; they are quite romantic in how they treat one another and see one another, but both of their personalities in a relationship together i think create a romance built more on realism and appreciation and a sort of grounded display of love than anything even remotely Cheesy. that’s one thing that really changes about riley from The Former Source Material to AAA is that she’s far more grounded given how her parents have… spun out let’s say
Things I look for in fanfic: i do think often about how nice it would be to just go on ao3 and scroll the ambition tags… find a good rl zc or da fic to peruse… oh there’d be garbage undoubtedly but the good fics… i would like to see it 😔anyway lmao i think if i were looking for rl fics in aaa i would look for ones that a) retain their core character traits and b) strike that perfect balance of grounded yet uniquely soft in the way rl are with each other that they aren’t with anyone else – i wouldn’t want to see their integrity thrown for the sake of being uber fluffy. but that’s like just a complete personal pref.
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: hmm… obviously this is all conjecture, but in terms of CANON, i cannot see lucas ending up with anyone else. like i just do not think it’s on his radar at all – it wasn’t before riley showed up, and if she floated away, he’d go back to just forgoing it entirely (it’s not entirely a joke when we joke around that lucas is rileysexual fkjdhsgk). riley i think like, zay would treat her nicely if they were ever to go past best friends. fanon wise just going by dynamics and personalities, i have a really special place in my heart for lucas x charlie (oh, and how fun it will be to share that dynamic with y’all in the future bc reading that rn i’m sure y’all are like HUH JFGDKLJGFLKSJHKLDSJHLJFDHL valid!!). could also probably enjoy a riley x isa fic or two. i also love digging into the relationship between lucas and asher (especially given that asher was lucas’s first crush… he he he) but as for them actually being a relationship i couldn’t because i’m 10000% sure they’d kill each other. even dylucasher wouldn’t work romantically, because as nice as it all is if lucasher didn’t kill each other, dylan would end up killing them both after mentally Snapping from playing mediator one heckin time too many. so. yes. fDSJKGLDFKLHFKLDH
My happily ever after for them: i can’t really say specifically because spoilies!! but i just want them to feel… settled. they’re constantly in worlds of turbulence right now, and i can’t wait for the day that they can just be together and get away from the city (because i firmly believe lucas hates living in the city) and just. start a life on their terms. that will be so beautiful :’)
Who is the big spoon/little spoon: i’m inclined to say lucas is the big spoon, but i don’t think it’s set in stone at all. like you know, if there’s a particularly rough day and lucas really needs that Comfort, then riley will by all means be the big spoon and hug him real tight. it’s what they both deserve!!
What is their favorite non-sexual activity: i love that this question specifies non-sexual specifically FDJSKFDKLSGJFLDKH like are there couples who truly enjoy sex with one another above all else…………. but i will say i think one thing that is nice about RL is the most important thing to them is just being together. like i think they’ll happily spend hours in the booth together not like, actively doing anything and focused on their own things (homework, production work, what have you) but just the other person’s presence there with them is comforting. you kind of see this in 109 when riley takes refuge in the booth, and i think this is core to their relationship. they don’t need to be talking or actively doing much – just maybe like, riley is tapping her foot against his knee absentmindedly or has her feet up in his lap. if they’re sitting closer, lucas is rubbing her knee with his thumb. you know what i mean? presence and the knowledge that they’re together is more important than any sort of sense of Action if that makes sense. but some others to list would be getting out of the city and going exploring in the Fresh Air away from… everything and everyone else lmao, and going to the animal shelter!!
send some winter hiatus asks !! :)
