Yaoi Fangirl? Here’s what you should watch!
Want to watch anime but don’t know where to start? Here’s a list of my recommendations based on what you might be into! As always, these are all my opinion’s and if you want to see a certain anime next, my inbox is always open. That being said, let’s get started!
We’re going to begin with the newest in cult classics, Yuri on Ice. Yuri on Ice is well worth the watch for the ice dancing alone, but if you’re not interested in that, perhaps the implied romance will draw you in? A clean, cute, and fun anime about two competing ice skaters named Yuri who are both competing for the attention of the esteemed ice skater, Victor Nikiforov. Victor agrees to be the teacher of the winner of a miniature ice dancing competition he sets up to see who has the most potential. With a catchy opening, this show is well worth the watch if only for the costumes and dance routines.
Tumblr media
Next on the list is No. 6, which has so many metaphors it hurts. After a bloody war, mankind took shelter within six cities. In city number 6 exists a boy named Shion, who crosses paths with a boy named Nezumi. Unknowing to Nezumi’s status as a fugitive, Shion and his Mother lose their position as Elites and are forced to live on the darker side of the city. Now, after losing everything, Shion and Nezumi are reunited and go on quite the journey. Why should you watch No. 6? Well, if the promise of Yaoi isn’t enough then how about the heart wrenching plot or emotionally involving characters?
Tumblr media
What do you mean you’re a boy?! Ah yes, what is a list of yaoi starter anime without mentioning Love Stage? It’s been years since Izumi starred in a bridal shoot as a girl in Happy-Wedding. After the suggestion of a reunion, Izumi is forced by his older brother to attend, where he breaks the news to his costar, Ichijo, that he is, in fact, a man. Ichijo, at first perturbed, realizes that he can’t get the image of Izumi out of his mind and continues to assault Izumi with texts and calls in an attempt to illicit some sort of response, but Izumi remains uninterested until he explains to Ichijo that he wants to be a manga artist and has no interest in acting. I won’t give away too much more, but Love Stage remains an anime to keep on your radar.
Tumblr media
While Kuroshitsuji isn’t actually explicitly a yaoi, it was actually written to be one. If you’re a fan of murder mysteries, demons, and slightly skewed history, then you’ll love Kuroshitsuji. After the murder of his parents, Ceil Phantomhive contracts with a demon in order to get revenge on the people who ruined his life. There’s plenty of nearly implied yaoi, nothing outright, and enough plot twists to keep you on your toes for the entire series.
Tumblr media
It feels as though most sports anime have a boys love feel to them and that is especially true of Kuroko No Basuke. Teikou Junior High’s Basketball Team has been the winner of championships three years running thanks to five certain players. Kuroko No Basuke follows the stars of Teikou’s basketball team, along with two new players who have just entered the game. To win the Interhigh Championships, they’ll have to overcome the obstacle of much stronger and scarier teams.
Tumblr media
Next up is Haikyuu! Hinata Shouyou becomes inspired after watching an ace called the Little Giant and decides to revive the volleyball club. See what I mean about sports anime and boys love having a connection? After finally getting a rag tag team together that makes it to the tournament, their dreams are most brutally and abruptly halted by the King of the Court. Hinata vows to one day surpass the King, making him enemy number 1. After graduating middle school and deciding to join the high school volleyball team, Hinata once more encounters the King of the Court. Trust me, there are plenty of couples to ship here and don’t worry about not liking sports, the characters are enough of a reason to watch.

What to Watch, Yuri Style.
Welcome to another What to Watch! Due to recent medical changes, I’ve been very busy and unfortunately haven’t had much time to post. Today that all changes! Without further ado, What to Watch, Girl Love! As always these are personal opinion and if there’s something you’d like to see on the list feel free to speak up! Now, let’s get started.
We’ll open up with a classic: Revolutionary Girl Utena. After the death of her parents, Utena Tenjou meets a travelling Prince who is so good at consoling her that Utena decides that she too, would like to become a Prince. Without another word, the Prince continues on his way, leaving Utena with nothing but a strange ring to remember him by. Years down the road, Utena at last begins her journey to Princehood at Otori Academy, where other students with similar rings compete in a battle for a bride with magical powers. A unique coming of age story that features feminine power and plenty of mystery, Utena will leave you feeling as though you can do anything.
Tumblr media
Next on the list is another classic, Sasameki Koto. While the most recurring theme in this anime is love, it also represents the love that cannot always flourish. Kazama Ushio is the perfect example of this theme, who asks multiple girls out in her class and yet always ends up rejected. Struggling with her love for the same sex, Murasame Sumika, a popular girl in her class is well loved not for her looks, but for her brains and athletic ability. Sumika’s crush on Ushio goes mostly unnoticed by the notorious skirt chaser, until one fateful day. A slice of life that will leave you wanting a bigger piece, Sasameki Koto will make you laugh, cry, and hope for more.
Tumblr media
Talking ferrets and magical wands? If that isn’t enough to draw you in, I don’t know what will be. As it turns out, the talking ferret is a mage and archaeologist from another world who accidentally infected earth with magical Jewel Seeds. Injured and in need of help, third grader Takamachi Nanoha has clearly never been told by her parents to avoid magical talking animals. The ferret, who introduces himself as Yuuno, no longer has the strength to gather the Seeds on his own and enlists Nanoha by giving her a precious red Jewel Seed. Unfortunately, along their journey Yuuno and Nanoha discover that they are not the only ones out there trying to collect the Seeds. Magical Lyrical Nanoha has just about everything you’d expect in a magical girl series, with bright colors and plenty of twists and turns that will keep you guessing!
Tumblr media
Reminiscent of Attack on Titan, Yuri Kuma Arashi takes place in an almost dystopian future. After an asteroid lights up the night sky, adorable bears begin to attack and devour humans. Responding with violence in kind, the humans build the Wall of Severance to keep the bears out. All is peaceful once again, until Kureha Tsubaki happens upon two bears that have sneaked into her school, Arashigaoka Academy. Kureha, who at first wants nothing more than the bears to be dead, suddenly finds herself unable to keep away, which may have provoked the Invisible Storm, a secret group within the Academy to keep human-bear relationships from forming. This cute little tale is colorful from start to finish and by the end will give you the desire to adopt an adorable little bear of your own.
Tumblr media
It all started with a kiss. Just one, they insisted, wanting to try something that they had never done with any of their other female friends. Sakura Trick begins as an innocent story of two girls attending high school together, childhood friends that are forced apart when their assigned seats are positioned on the opposite sides of the classroom. Wanting to strengthen their bond, the two share what they promise will be one kiss. It then turns into stolen moments in the empty classroom or when alone in the bedroom. The girl’s love is possibly threatened when one of their big sister’s begins to grow suspicious. Another coming of age story that will leave you wanting more, Sakura Trick is one you won’t want to miss.
Tumblr media
What would you do for the chance to be granted one wish? In Akuma No Riddle, this is the prize at stake for 11 girls at Myoujou Academy. In order to have their wish granted, these girls must become assassins to kill Ichinose Haru and if they fail they are either expelled or killed themselves. Tokaku Azuma has just transferred to the Black Class in order to participate in this strange killing game, but finds herself slowly becoming drawn to the very target she is supposed to take out. Witty, comical, and fun, Akuma No Riddle will take you for quite a ride.
Tumblr media
76 trombones in the big parade, or at least, that’s the dream. Kumiko Oumae is hoping that high school will provide a clean slate after a traumatizing accident in middle school that made her swear off the brass band. Almost instantly, Kumiko finds herself surrounded by other girls interested in the very instrument that had become her forbidden fruit and finds herself gravitating back to where she started. With renewed confidence, Kumiko, supported by her band mates who are both familiar and new, sets her sights on qualifying for the National Band Competition. Hibike! Euphonium is a fun story for all music enthusiasts that is sure to keep you humming.

What to Watch, Book Version
Want to watch anime but don’t know where to start? Here’s a list of my recommendations based on books you’ve read and liked! As always, these are all my opinion’s and if you want to see a certain anime next, my inbox is always open. That being said, let’s get started!
The Fault in Our Stars, oh how that made me sob. If you liked TFIOS, then you’ll probably love Shigatsu Kimi No Uso, also known as Your Lie In April. A tearjerker from the start, you’ll be hooked from the first episode. When a boy who can no longer hear the sound of the piano meets a girl who is determined to get him to hear it again, the two make music unlike any other. Keep a box of tissues next to you, you’re gonna need them.
Tumblr media
If you enjoyed The Martian, then you might like Gargantia on The Verdurous Planet. In the future, humanity lives in podships in space. When a species begins to try to eradicate them, the military fights back. One such soldier falls through a wormhole that takes him to what is supposed to be a dead planet, Earth. Stuck there with no idea how to get home, he can only rely on himself and his intelligent ship called Chamber. With plenty of plot twists and curious scientific inventions, Gargantia will leave you feeling satisfied.
Tumblr media
Love Sherlock Holmes? Then you may be curious about Detective Conan. Unlike the TV series, there are plenty of Detective Conan seasons to satiate your lust for the mysterious. A mystery expert by the age of seventeen,  Shinichi Kudou proves himself by solving case after case, even when it seems impossible. There are some very memorable characters, both good and bad, as well as some unexpectedly funny dialogue and serious moments that will have you clutching your pillow. With nineteen movies and twelve OVA’s, you’ll need to clear your schedule for a binge.
Tumblr media
Like Divergent? Then you’ll probably like Ergo Proxy. In a doomed city, Romdo proves to be one of the last human civilizations on Earth. Thanks to an ecological disaster, life outside of the domes proves to be impossible, but inside isn’t much better. Designed to help with the progress of the betterment of humanity, robots have been beside humans in every day life. However, thanks to a virus, they’ve begun to become self aware. Assigned to investigate how this is possible, Re-I Mayer is on the case to solve some interesting murders, but will discover things she never intended to learn about.
Tumblr media
Love The Hobbit? Then you may enjoy Hitsugi No Chaika, the quest of  14 year old sorceress named Chaika Trabant, who carries a coffin on her back. Like The Hobbit, this takes place in a fantasy realm with both fantastical and creepy creatures. It will also leave you with a taste for the unexplored plains of the world and what could be laying deep in the woods.
Tumblr media
Enjoy Game of Thrones? Then you may like Death Note. A Shinigami can kill anyone, provided that they know their name and write it in the Death Note. One day, a bored Shinigami drops a Death Note into the human world just to see what will happen. A high school student with deplorable actions stumbles upon it one day and that is where the fun begins. Just like in Game of Thrones, don’t pick any favorite characters because you never know just whose name will appear inside of the notebook.
Tumblr media
Like the Lunar Chronicles? Then you may enjoy Koutetsujou No Kabaneri. Taking place somewhere in the middle of the industrial revolution, a monster appears that can only be defeated by piercing its heart, which is protected by a layer of iron. On the island of Hinomoto, people have begun to barricade themselves in to protect themselves from the monster. While one is a steampunk and the other a cyberpunk, you’ll find that there are quite a few similarities.
Tumblr media
Love the Hunger Games? Then you may like Fate Stay Night. After an inferno killed his family, Shirou is adopted by a mysterious man named Kiritsugu Emiya, who is a magician. Years after Emiya’s death, Shirou finds himself stuck at school in a fight to the death between two beings known as servants. Somehow surviving a deadly injury, on a fluke Shirou summons a servant of his own and becomes a contender in the Fifth Holy Grail War, a battle of seven servants summoned from any point in history. If Shirou wins, he will have one wish granted, but to do that, he’ll need to stay alive.

What to Watch, Hopeless Romantic Edition.
Want to start watching a romance anime but don’t know where to begin? Here are some of my favorites to get you started! Please keep in mind these are personal opinions and if you have any anime you’d like to see up here, then feel free to drop me a message and I’ll update it with your selections!
Missed the last one? Catch it here: http://citykat199.tumblr.com/post/144102395369/what-to-watch-movie-edition
Love the supernatural? Then you’ll probably enjoy Kamisama Hajimemashita. It starts when a girl whose father gets into serious gambling debts is kicked out of her house and named the heiress of a shrine. The Shrine’s familiar is a mix of angst and terribly tsundere, but he’ll catch your heart and you’ll ship them from the moment you lay eyes on them. This show will leave you in giggles, tears, and by the end you’ll be yelling at your viewing screen to “Just freaking kiss already!”
Tumblr media
Like watching the misunderstood delinquent looking boy turn out to be the sweetest guy on earth? Then Ore Monogatari is probably for you. Takeo is the picture perfect image of chivalry, making other boys jealous of his both muscular exterior and polite manners, but he is also very misunderstood thanks to his large, intimidating presence by those who don’t know him. One night, Takeo bravely saves Rinko from being molested and falls in love with her instantly but is afraid that she may like his cool, lady’s man best friend Sunakawa. Another anime where you’ll be shipping the mains the moment you see them.
Tumblr media
Next on the list is Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-Kun, a trope on the classic anime shoujos. This is more for the comedic romantics, about a boy who writes a girls’ monthly manga under the pen name Nozaki. When a classmate tries to confess her feelings for him, he accidentally thinks that she’s a fan and and he gives her an autograph. Then, somehow, she gets roped into being his apprentice. This is one of those shows that will have you giggling to your core. It makes fun of just about every average shoujo and will blow you out of the water with how beautiful the animation is.
Tumblr media
If you enjoy Motzart in the Jungle, then you may enjoy Hibike! Euphonium. Just for a bit of warning, this is a shoujo ai, so if girlxgirl isn’t your thing, then I suggest taking a look at some of the other romantic animes on the list. That being said, after swearing off music due to an incident in the brass band competition in middle school, Kumiko enters high school hoping for a fresh start. Somehow, the people she surrounds herself with are all interested in brass instruments and with them, Kumiko finally finds the confidence to pick up an instrument again. I won’t give anything away, but if you like music, you’ll love this.
Tumblr media
Maid-Sama is one of the first romantic animes I watched and is still one of the best ones I’ve seen. Being the first female student council president is a bit troubling when your school used to be an all boys academy. Misaki isn’t afraid though, especially since she’s trained in akido and has been nicknamed the “Demon President.” However, the seemingly perfect school president has a deep, dark secret; she works at a maid cafe. Knowing that if anyone from school ever saw her that her reputation would be ruined, Misaki took to keeping this from everyone. One day, however, the most popular boy in school strolls casually into the very maid cafe the President works in and could very well spread her secret like wildfire.
Tumblr media
Another unconventional love story, No. 6 takes place many years ago after a bloody war, where mankind took shelter in 6 seemingly perfect city-states. One day, Shion, an elite resident of City 6, meets Nezumi, a boy who lives in the wasteland beyond the city walls and has an eye opening experience as to what the world outside is like. Knowing the risks, Shion allows Nezumi to stay the night; with Nezumi being a fugitive, the consequences of being caught means losing his elite status and being relocated with his mother to the darker, more sinister side of the supposed utopia.
Note: This is a boyxboy anime, but I would still highly recommend giving it a try since the plot is fantastic.
Tumblr media
If you like fantasy, then you’ll probably enjoy Shugo Chara. Amu is known as “spicy and intimidating,” by those in her class, however in reality, Amu is actually very reserved and shy. Feeling desperate for a change of pace, Amu makes a wish that she could be reborn as her “true self.” The very next morning, Amu discovers that she’s laid three eggs. Say what?! Eventually, the eggs hatch to reveal three guardians; Ran, Miki, and Su, each guardian representing one of Amu’s “would be self’s.” Somehow, Amu is roped into becoming a magical girl by their student council president in order to stop those whose eggs have become corrupted dreams from defiling the planet. What I believe to be an underrated anime, Shugo Chara will capture your heart and soul.
Tumblr media
A new player to the game that has quickly captured the hearts of many, is The Miraculous Ladybug. If what you’re looking for if you adore a good superhero movie. Set in modern day Paris, the main character Marionette, is secretly the crime fighter the Miraculous Ladybug! Having to deal with normal school girl stuff is hard enough, but how about having to fight crime and evildoers with an annoying guy in black spandex who cracks cat puns all night?! To make matters worse, the two are unaware that they happen to be in the same class!
Tumblr media
Ao Haru Ride is an anime that will leave you in tears. Futuba Yoshioka used to be an attractive girl that was popular with the men, but often criticized and bullied by other girls. To Yoshioka it never mattered, because the only person who she ever wanted to capture the attention of is Kou, a boy whom she once shared the shelter of a bus station with beneath the pouring rain. A classical romantic set up, the story moves on to a festival in which Yoshioka hopes to see Kou, but alas, the student that was so nice to her mysteriously disappears, leaving Yoshioka friendless and alone. Now in high school, Yoshioka drops the cute and feminine appearance, trading it for a more tomboyish personality in hopes of receiving no unwanted attention. After living a mostly quiet life, Yoshioka’s world is suddenly turned upside down for various reasons and a certain appearance. Keep the tissues in check, you’re gonna need them.
