✨NEW WRITEBLR TAG GAME JUST DROPPED✨
If you're struggling with breathing life into your OC's, try this funny yet stupidly simple trick/writeblr tag game I just came up with. I call it the 'Roast Your OCS and Make It Into a Title' tag game. 🤣
So, we've all heard of fictional character archetypes and stereotypes that are often present in fiction, right? We all know it's not good to have shallow, surface level characters that have no complexity or nuance to their personalities, because real life humans contain multitudes, contradictions, and are in general very complicated beings.
Throw all that shit out for this exercise and toss it into the trash! 🗑️ In this tag game, we're gonna be reducing all our OC's to the most basic, mundane, stereotypical/archetypal renditions of themselves and making it Fit Into a Title!
Here's an example of my main character + his besties from my Science Fantasy WIP:

This community has been having a lot of saddened authors, some being mistreated by their audiences, a majority (if not all), whose work suffers heavily by the lack of reblogs/feedback. You know what I just thought of? I run into a lot of pain in my joints from my chronic illness, so! Out of all the legends, who do you think would join me in a warm bath and have soft domestic little chit chatting/washing each other? Washing a lovers hair is possibly my favorite thing to do, but also gently washing their body for them with reverence? 10/10 I'm just curious who you think would pair best in that scenario, this isn't a drabble ask or anything!

• Bloodhound: They understand chronic pain very well. Their scars from the cryofreeze can make their skin and joints ache like they've been out in the freezing cold too long. They're also naturally cold, so seeking warmer temperatures is always a must. Plus, they love domestic things. So bath time? They are very down for.
At their home on Talos, they have a huge claw foot tub. It fits both of you perfectly and they quite like either being against your chest or vice versa. Expect many kisses peppered over your head, shoulders, and back if they're behind you. As well as their soothing touch massaging out aches from you as they listen about your day.
They're also prone to getting playfully handsy, whether in another way, or simply just scooping bubbles onto your face to make you laugh.

• Caustic: Look at that man and tell me he doesn't have chronic pains. The man has cancer for goodness sake. His joints ache all the fucking time. You'd think he was bad at self care, but you'd be wrong! After all, science and diabolical planning does not come to one in a brooding/depressive stage! Though, physical touch isn't normally his SPEED, he begrudgingly agrees ONE time and then it becomes routine.
He's always nervous on where to put his hands. Where his hands will hover over your shoulders and arms before settling awkwardly in the water. Until you grab his hands and put them on your body. He's stiff and awkward, but eventually he'll ease his way in and accept the mess of bubbles and chatter.

• Loba: Though she does not suffer from pains like you do, she LOVES bath time together. She is the QUEEN of self care and always buys you lavish bath salts, bath bombs, bubbles, and numerous other hair care and skincare products. Her tub is lavish and huge, easily fitting four people. She loves to be pampered just as equally as she likes to DO the pampering.
Her touch is always like silk across your skin. Listening to your day and her silky voice murmuring back in your ear replies. Her nails are so gentle not to nick you as she works over your flesh and skin, her lips caressing the crook of your neck or the shell of your ear. Whispering sweet nothings all the while.

Hello! It’s so great to find a gargoyles/goliath x Elisa account! Anyway, I was wonder what you thought of Thailog. Based on his whole origin, I think he would have major parent issues. It probably goes deep enough to affect intimacy. I personally think (because of his age) he would probably seek out someone maternal unintentionally if he were still alive. It might even be cute in a fluffy way if he levels out a bit with some parental affection. Like a child Goliath in an adult Goliath body.

I absolutely LOVE Thailog because he’s probably the creepiest character on the show and I adore watching him scheme, maim, and gloat! He’s highly intelligent, incredibly strong, and a complete psychopath.
He does have a twisted sort of Oedipus complex:
Apart from the fact that he keeps trying to kill his “fathers” (mostly Goliath and Xanatos as Sevarius is still of use to him), we’re shown a weird attraction to Elisa in Double Jeopardy, then he’s with his father’s ex mate and later, he mixes the DNA of both his father’s ex AND his current mate to create the perfect obedient sex slave in Delilah. Part of that is also very likely the desire to piss off Demona (by mixing her DNA with a human’s DNA) and Goliath (by cloning Elisa in general).
And in another super creepy moment in Sanctuary, we see him lust after Angela who’s basically his biological daughter. Yikes!
I do not think Thailog is craving any intimacy or a mate who could be his equal. The only person that’s important to him is he himself. He’s only out for his own gain and would manipulate and/or fight anyone who’d stand in his way to success.
He has no morals, no empathy, no honor, and I doubt he’s even capable of love, respect, or trust, the key ingredients of a healthy relationship, as he sees everyone as his inferior and as a means to achieve his goals.
Thailog is a ruthless, heartless bitch who enjoys causing his enemies pain and despair, and that’s why I love him! I’m a big fan of dark, creepy characters and he’s also just so much fun to watch!
Maybe sometime in the future we will see another diabolical plan of his in action since he’s still alive and running Nightstone Unlimited from the shadows.

By 1897, Peter Walter had unlocked the power of Blue Matter and subsequently, created an alternate reality he dubbed Kazooland.
Excerpt from The Story of the Cavalcadium
The Cavalcadium tried to make a permanent portal to Kazooland in their building, based on Peter Walter I’s studies.
The Cavalcadium was wiped from existence in an instant, and it took Peter a few months to realize it had simply vanished. Time and space itself left a void to forget it ever was.
The Cavalcadium building now exists in the seams of Kazooland, and acts as a hub to many other parts of the dimension. A few doorways even exist on Earth.

Asininia*
The dark kingdom of Ignatius Becile. Long having taken refuge from Earth, the black-handed Becile has built a giant city which is depleting Asininia of its natural resources and precious rock candy veins. His aim is creating an unstoppable army of candy-powered automatons to consume the universe.

The 8th Dimension of Absolute and Infinite Terror
The only persistent door to the terrible 8th dimension. Its history is unclear but it is indeed locked and guarded by Jumbo, The Pink Whale With A Top Hat.* The 8th dimension is notorious for being the place of fermenting nightmares and evil Lovecraftian Beasts.
*Jumbo can be found in the album The Vice Quadrant, guarding Commander Cosmo and The Necrostar
Horroria
A jagged mountain range of ash and death, which is primarily a refuge for monsters. A couple of human settlements exist, but the majority of inhabitants of the continent are Vampires, Werewolves, Demons, Zombies, Witches, Cultists, Poltergeists, Man-Eating Hamburgers, and Hamburger-Eating Men.
Hypexion V
A presumed alien homeworld of the Hypexions; thin bipedal humanoids with a sweet tooth.
Ironically Foreboding Shaped Islands
The Chaos Sea marks these bodies of land as a legend, but time travelers and fortunate explorers speak of adventurous sailors, pirates, and buried treasure. It is believed the famous Captain Albert Alexander was the first to have sailed the Chaos Sea, yet only stories remain.
Lola
The Hypexion Moon infested with the diabolical Moon Worms. The Moon Worm Queen is held responsible for eating a chunk of Hypexion V before she was destroyed, but a newly born Moon Worm Queen is the talk among the stars. The talking stars of course.
Lotsasand
An ancient dust land belonging to the ancestors of the Kingdom of Set. Though primarily a land for the outsourcing of dust and camels, the age old tales of Jackal Men, Living Mummies, and Scarab People still invoke questions of mysticism in even the most skeptical of skeptics.
Meh
An icy northern land of Snow Queens and Mystical Creatures. Many a wise pipe smoking old bearded man tell stories about this enchanted place, but few are listened to.
Merveille
Merveille is the remains of the once great Circus Empire, which exploded eons ago and left a watercolored land of saturated imagination. The inhabitants are mostly the Speechless Ones, also known as Mimes. It is often described as a tangible dream, and artists from all over the multiverse have tapped into its presence for inspiration and escape.
Cities:
Bip
The capital of Merveille was named after its founder, and is a favorite spot for vacation for Peter Walter VI. It was also in Bip that the Great War of 1823 was ended by a mysterious mime with a magical kazoo.
New Pieland
Once a paradise of wilderness, pilgrims from Old Pieland settled here declaring it New Pieland after their former continent was completely devoured since it actually lived up to its namesake. It was quite literally a giant land mass of flaky crust with a warm gooey appley interior.
New Pieland is home to many American immigrants and many other multiverse settlers. Humans, Robots, Clowns, Cat People, and Vleeds are just a few of the races you'll find in the melting pot which is New Pieland.
Cities:
Biscuit Town
Biscuit Town is a famous small mining town in the eastern part of New Pieland. It is home primarily to clowns, wizards, and talking animals. Biscuit Town has been run by Walter Robot The Jon until recently, and was the first town in New Pieland to elect a robot for Mayor. Currently, in the Jon's absence the Mayor's Assistant Boft is struggling with the encroaching rogue nation of Asininia, a resource-hungry super kingdom of mad scientists and candy-powered androids.
Preferbia
This large sprawling landscape of suburbia is a metropolis of 1950's ideals, where the beautiful residents are protected from the ravages of time by a blue matter rich force field over the city. Created by a visionary man from Earth after slipping through an interdimensional rift, Howard Lloyd saw the potential of the unstable rift and created what some have called the 1950s utopia of mankind. Those who enter the city rarely decide to leave the prospect of eternal youth, but some do choose to escape Preferbia's roving gangs of fish mutants and frequent attacks by the Hypexion Moon Worms.
Snornia
Snornia is the last remaining haven for mystical beings. It is cut off from the rest of the world by a vengeful Dragon God, but those who have seen it speak of a fantastical world of magic and danger, with princesses in towers, dexterous elves making shoes, and six winged warlocks. Humans who find ways to enter usually do so to train to become wizards or dragons, but many are eaten by the Dragon God, and even more give up and sail to Party Island.
South Adventurica
A largely unexplored tangle of constantly transforming jungles, swamps, and plains unbound by any mappable record of time. Adventurers have sought to unlock the continent's mysteries for years, and its surprises still continue to surprise avid surprise seekers. Dinosaurs, giant insects, carnivorous plants, elementals, Forgotten Gods, Bobby Darin, and Santa Claus are all said to live here, but the only proof of their existence are the ravaged journals from explorers of the past...
And that captured dinosaur amusement park off the coast.
Verk
A rainy settlement of time travelers from the 1890s. It is separated from the world by an ethereal mist of aether called "Henry's Breath," long believed to be generated by the fat ghost of England's Henry the 8th. Most settlers began traversing the aether via multidimensional travel from when Colonel P. A. Walter I discovered Blue Matter in 1896, but all matter of being from the multiverse seems to have leaked through to embrace knowledge, Victorian style, and to tinker with steampunk abominations.

Dandyton
The Capital of Verk is a bustling city of inventors, scientists, airship pilots, alchemists, airship pilots, ghosts, and airship pilots. It is home to the Verk Dandy Candy Factory, many airships, and the Verkian Rift, a dimensional hub to countless other realities.

The result was an explosion that singularly hit Peter Walter VI in his face. He now wears an iconic keyhole mask to hide whatever the results of the explosion may have been.

In the nearly-a-decade I’ve had this blog, I’ve reblogged a metric fuckton of posts and created or shared very little of my own content. I’ve been inspired to change that, a little by the pandemic, a little by studyblrs like @sleepanon, and probably the most by internet-friend @girlfriendsofthegalaxy—whose weekly-roundup format I am going to lovingly rip off. I’ve consulted her and have her blessing, so without further ado...!

I’m trying desperately to finish Dorothy Dunnett’s The Game of Kings before libby yoinks it off my phone for the nth time. historical fiction set in 16th cen Scotland. this novel has so much about it that I crave, e.g. delicious vocabulary (that seems to be a blend of early modern Scottish terms for things, and just bonkers esoteric SAT words), a suavely unknowable and unpredictable antihero protag, and some entertaining dialogue—this series should be my catnip! but there’s so much oblique Plotting and Misdirection, and reading it before bed over the course of the last few months has meant I can’t really keep track of who anyone is, ever. The last 10% of the book has a lot of exposition and tying up loose ends, in the form of a trial, and I appreciate that. I want to get a start on the books I got for Christmas though, so it’s time to get cracking.

I watched four? five? episodes of The Untamed in bed this morning before even getting up—it’s getting bad y’all. Not the show —the show is getting good — my beautiful magic sword boys-problem, is getting bad. I should start counting how many times the central two characters make me actually stop and think “that eyebrow/glance/facial feature was so beautiful,” except if I did, I’d never do anything else. I was at the bit in episode 40ish where there is a just so much exposition and so many things being revealed, and I kept hoping the tension would break but things kept happening. this show is making me think a lot about the visual language of television, especially productions from outside north america, and I absolutely love it. there’s so much I know I don’t *get*, and which I want to look up, but I’m making myself wait until I’m not midway through and susceptible to spoilers.

I went for a solitary twilight walk on christmas eve as it began to snow (damply), to look at my neighborhood’s lights and chase a particular mood, and I re-listened to the The Adventure Zone: Candelights 2017 live show from Tacoma to keep me company. Here in my inaugural weekly-roundup, at the beginning of this experiment in sharing my media opinions and habits, it just bears mentioning that I am an abiding TAZ fan and dip back in to the old stuff when between new episodes.

longtime readers of this blog will remember that @floragraph gifted me with a nintendo 2ds back in the summer—a handmedown of hers which is actually the first gaming consol/device I’ve literally ever owned—and a selection of her old games with it. I’ve been saving a bunch of them and gave myself permission to start a new one for Christmas, so I have now jumped into Prof Layton and the Diabolical Box for the first time (I know, I know). here to say I am delighted by the aesthetic, I want to solve the mystery asap, and I am so absolutely not equipped for puzzle-games. Logic? In my recreation? so it’s anyone guess how far I’ll actually get. I’m so much better at the puzzles that let you rotate things, or fool around and find out, as opposed to the brain teasers without concrete things to experiment with.

I’m not a crafter, so this section will be a mix of cooking or baking projects, home repair and DIY shit, and lazy home gardening. While writing this, I’m mulling some cider, on a stove burner whose metal under-coil pan I have replaced with much clanking and swearing this evening. The cider smells excellent, it’s infusing with an orange peel and little sachet of cinnamon/nutmeg/whole cloves, but I’m almost more excited about getting the burner coil to fucking fit and not pop back out of place.

this section is something I’m trying as a form of academic motivation, where I can talk a little about what I’m writing or reading for my phd (so I can keep the reading section above for recreational reading, which I absolutely depend on to preserve my quality of life). this week, however, I’ve been forcing myself to take an honesttogod break for a few days, so I will just mention that this section exists and will be more interesting in future posts. I’m presenting at a conference on Jan 7! That practice presentation I did before ‘break’ showed me how much I need to work on! Ideas about framing my research to fit the stupid ‘teaching tools’ theme of the panel are percolating in the back of my mind, but I’m not going to take action on them until Monday— it’s marinating, to mix my metaphors somewhat.

I wonder if anyone was approached by someone trying to talk shit about me and make people hate, avoid, and be afraid of me?
I have had an insane, manic stalker following me at least the last couple years who has been seeking to have me murdered out of envy and one of the things they do is torment and try to isolate their victims from everyone around them so that they have no allies. They are insanely manipulative and the average person is very unlikely to see through their games or hope to stand up to them if they do. They probably seemed completely sound and normal in contact but would do everything in their power to tear me down and sound like a predator or something.
I noticed a lot of my friends from here ghosted me and even people I’m mutuals with that are active bypass all the posts I make or reblog. One of my friends even flat out betrayed me for this person in their pursuit of an idealized relationship at all costs and may be in danger.
One of their goals was certainly to make me seem like the delusional and manic one. That’s the nature of what I like to call the Binary Problem which logically makes projection an effective gaslighting technique. People tend to be groomed into thinking in absolutes and it’s rife for manipulative exploitation. It’s like a software exploit but in the human mind.
I cannot stress enough that this person is, absolutely, 100%, diabolic evil who presents themself as a saint. They will be fully agreeable with you until they are done using you and if you don’t like it they will make you pay for it. They are fairly similar to one of the main villains from Steins;Gate.
They hate me because they see me as threat to their existence because I know exactly how sociopaths function and they can’t handle the idea of having someone being a match for their manipulative behavior. It gives them a massive narcissistic injury. It’s very childish in the worst kind of way.

It’s a kind of magic - Looking at the history of magical practices
Hey there, traveler!
That’s right, it’s Dar here with today’s cadaver on the dissecting table: magic. Given that magic isn’t technically one trope but a broad term used to define many things mostly in fiction genres it won’t be a single post but a short series about the topic. Let’s start with the basics: what do we mean by this short word, where did it come from and what’s the big deal? This episode is more of a ‘fun facts from the history of magic’, but I think they are interesting enough to inspire some readers. So have fun!
Magic is roughly saying a supernatural method to affect beings or forces that we can’t manipulate with mundane methods. From witches’ brew to voodoo dolls, chants and sacrifices, magic can appear in many forms but the main gist is the same: the user does something symbolic and commands a force to alter reality in some way. Some may think magic was born with J.R.Tolkien, but as you can guess from the introduction, it is a tale as old as time.
The more ancient civilizations accepted magic as a fact, a tool against certain dire events. Ancient Mesopotamia, for example, had a jurisdiction system in place as it was believed that nearly every person could cast magic, and thus cursing someone and protecting oneself from such a curse was no more extreme than getting into a fistfight. There was the offender, the evil magician who cast the curse and the defendant, who used magic in self-defense. This wasn’t as spectacular as one would think, it mostly consisted of imprisoning magic energies, unwillingly committed sins or the essence of some illnesses into objects, and then burning them to cleanse the magical power, be it ill or beneficial from this world.
In Egypt, there was a personified apparition of magic called heka, and they thought magic was a tool given to men by the creator to ward against certain events. Their use of magical energies came from the understanding that humans shared the divine nature of gods, they could create things and effects with words. Yupp, like Skyrim, only more desert-vibe. Do you know the pictograms and hieroglyphs inside pyramids? Those are words of magical nature, tailored to provide the dead royal with the means to survive in the afterlife. Fun fact, they were written inside the pyramids to keep them secret from the commoners, as it was a prerogative of the pharaoh to be guided by such spells.
But not all was rosy. The modern term ‘magic’ has a Greek origin and comes from the time of the Greek-Persian wars. The greeks learned this word from the Persians who followed a different religion then the polises, so the term ‘magos’ (meaning mage or magician) quickly gained a derogative connotation and referred to the alien, heathen religions of the Persians. This however quickly diluted and spread into the Hellenic masses and quickly became synonymous with charlatan and quack. This was the time magic and religion became inseparable for quite a long time after, the former being an improper, insulting form of the latter.
That derogative meaning continued into early and later Christianity. Theologists described magic as the opposition to miracles, supernatural phenomena created by God’s power (basically the same concept with a different source). This was further strengthened by the fact that the Celtic and german tribal religions (the so-called heathens) still thought of magic as a method to control the natural world and more importantly to commune with the divine. During the Middle Ages as Christianity spread magic was always an opposing force and almost solely present in druidic and supposedly in Jewish and Islamic religions. This is an important fact because these cultures became the foundations for the modern representation of magic, including the witches, the future tellers, the alchemists, and astrologists.
An interesting thing happened when Europe went to conquer the world. Our brave ancestors brought their beliefs and conventions with them, and that meant the way they thought about magic. They were quick to stamp every foreign religion, be it African, indigenous American, or Asian as magic, and tried to replace it with some good-old Christianity. That resulted in some quite fascinating things. For example, the Portuguese word feitiço means spell or incantation, but when they applied this to some West-African religious practices, the concept of fetish was born. Another example (my favorite) is the Haitian and Louisiana voudou, the mixture of some African beliefs and strong Christian pressure by the French. This created a religion worshipping Bondye (from French Bon Dieu, meaning „good God”) and the loa, the lesser deities or spirits connecting mortals to Bondye. Due to the forced but unwilling shift in faith, there are some really interesting anomalies, like the correlation of the death loa Maman Brijit and St. Brigitte of Ireland. Just to give an example why is this my favorite mythology, voudin rituals include the summoning of a specific loa into a „Mount”, a practitioner who lets the loa inhabit his or her body for a while. Then, you have to buy the loa’s attention with gifts. In other religions, this would be animal sacrifices or burning food, but not here. The loa are not so old-timey. Some of them need a good cigar, others desire pink champagne, while Baron Samedi, for example, the tophat wearing king of death likes his followers to host a funeral for his Mount so he can magically spring to life and laugh.
However as modern age approached like a steaming, oil-smelling mechanical monster, some magic turned out to be very real and very mundane and people had a new name for it – science. The line between technology, actual magic, and quack machinations became blurred and people were uncertain what to believe anymore. This uncertainty gave way to the witch hunts where basically anything unexplainable was marked as magic and thus diabolical. This public uproar raged on for quite some time in short and long periods all over the globe before the whole thing turned into skepticism.
The Modern Age brought with it a philosophy of intellect’s absolute dominance over every other virtue. An intelligent man didn’t believe in dubious practices, an intelligent lady never turned to clearly fraud future-tellers and mediums. This, however, went an interesting way. As it was no longer punishable by being burned alive but only shunned and ill-advised, it sparked a certain curiosity in people. Young girls bored out of their minds found an interesting mystery in these charlatans, and with that magic was reborn. During the Victorian era seances multiplied, secret magical organizations grew like mushrooms after the rain and the whole romantic (and terrifying) way we think about magic came into existence.
I think I’ll stop here for today. Next week we’ll move onto the mages, the practitioners and adepts of magic and take a look at how their real-world counterparts evolved during the ages. Death & Decorum Part 1: She Wants Revenge
Welcome to Death and Decorum, a 6 part miniseries that I will be posting throughout the month of October. As the title suggests it is not a love story, but one of revenge. I have done some interesting research over the last day or so and will advise you that some of the deaths depicted in this story are rather interesting and based off actual deaths that occurred in Regency England. I am very well aware that this is not going to be everyone's cup of tea, which is why I will only be tagging people who requested to be tagged by liking, reblogging, or commenting on this story's coming soon post. Death and Decorum
Part One: She Wants Revenge
Dusk was starting to fall as an unmarked carriage rolled to a stop just outside a small, out of the way apothecary. “You know what to do,” the countess ordered in a cold, distant voice. The dark haired girl sitting across from her gave a curt nod, her brown eyes shamefully studying the floor. “This is for the goods,” she pressed a coin in the girl's hand. “And this,” she jingled a small, nondescript pouch, “is for you. Twelve pieces of silver. Rather fitting don't you think?” She let out a low, emotionless chuckle when the girl's cheeks blossomed with color.
“I'm no Judas,” the girl whispered, greedily snatching the purse from the countess' fingers. “The only reason I'm doing this is my family-”
“Whatever helps you sleep at night. Now, do be a dear and fetch me what I've asked.” Eyes the color of a winter sky right before a storm bore into the girl, reminding her that the countess was not one to be trifled with. “Don't dally. I still need to dress for dinner.”
“Yes, Your Grace.” The girl gathered the dark skirt of her uniform and reluctantly climbed from the carriage. The Countess watched, a cold smile stretching across her berry stained lips, as the girl entered the shoppe. It hadn't taken much to turn the girl. Word of an ailing father and the promise of silver had been all it took. Judas. Briar. Both had sold their loyalty for twelve pieces of silver and both would have innocent blood on their hands.
It rained, which was only fitting since it matched the raw, coldness building inside Rebecca Young. The sharp, skin piercing drizzle that stabbed at the world, painting it a melancholy gray, also provided the perfect cover for the tears she was incapable of producing. It was a pity, really. She wanted so desperately to feel something other than the icy hatred that was starting to course through her veins. She wanted to be the sort of daughter that dropped to her knees beside the yawning hole where her father's coffin was being lowered, screaming against the injustice of his death. To give into such urges wouldn't be ladylike, so like the good little puppet she'd become she stood quietly between the caterwauling form of her dear, dear step-mother and the sniffling mouse who clung to the arm of the countess' stoic faced son. 'The evil trifecta,' Rebecca thought bitterly. The murderous widow putting on a marvelous show of grief, the tittering twit who was too busy gathering juicy tidbits to gossip about with her betters to realize she was naught but a pawn in game she couldn't possibly win, or the mindless drone who willingly did his mother's bidding no matter how heinous the request. If it were one of those Gothic novels that were so popular, there would be a tragic heroine desperately trying to escape their nefarious clutches. Perhaps that was Rebecca's role. The grieving bastard child, too concerned with whether or not she would be tossed on the streets to properly grief. 'Never,' she curled her lips in disdain, 'I will never accept that role.'
Squaring her slender shoulders, Rebecca raised her chin a notch, her thick sooty lashes lowering over her light brown eyes while she forced herself to focus on the words coming out of the vicars mouth rather than comparing her life to the plot of tragic tale. “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for thou art with me, thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” The words struck a familiar chord, one buried deep beneath the gentile facade she'd carefully cultivated to please a grandmother whose love only extended as far as Rebecca's ability to procure a suitable match. For the last month she had stumbled through her own valley of death, letting the nobility slaughter any trace of the village girl that had arrived at Edgewater with a naive excitement shining in her eyes. There had been no comfort, no rod or staff to protect her, while she struggled to win the approval of a father whose life had been stolen by his inconsolable widow. Turning her head slightly, several strands of dark hair sticking to her cheek, Rebecca pierced her step-mother with a venomous look. 'From here on out I shall fear no evil,' she silently hissed, 'and you shall cower before me as I will become Edgewater's very own shadow of death. Vengeance shall have a name and that name shall be Rebecca.'
.“...and said, naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked I shall return thither; the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away...”
Rebecca pursed her lips into a tight, grayish blue tinged pucker to keep from yelling. 'Liar! Filthy, filthy liar!' The Lord had given Father life, had blessed Rebecca with his affections for three glorious weeks, but the Almighty surely hadn't taken him away. His life had been stolen, wrung from his body with a poison served up by a 'loving' wife. Rebecca would give the Countess her due; she'd chosen carefully, selecting a poison that mimicked the dreaded yellow fever. 'And now she plays the part of grieving widow', Rebecca internally sneered. 'She's allowed her desperation to turn her into a novel cliché, a desperate villianess willing to sacrifice the innocent in her quest to hold on to something that was never meant to be hers.' The greatest tragedy, was Rebecca would have cared for her like a mother had the viper but shown her an ounce of affection. Instead, the countess had let her own diabolical nature twist even the smallest kindness into a sinister ploy.
“We know not why these tragedies occur.”
The lie slid easily off the tongue of the vicar. If not for the man's love of his own voice, the burial would have already concluded, father planted in the ground. Instead, the vicar continued to spoon feed deceitful words of comfort that allowed the countess to continue her theatrical display, while Rebecca could practically feel the black crepe dress her grandmother insisted she wear starting to melt. The light weight silk wasn't meant for such dampness, nor were the jet embellished slippers she wore beneath it. Not that the countess cared. She had ignored propriety by wearing a rich velvet gown designed to show case her bosom, which heaved mightily with each over exaggerated sob, and hugged her other physical assets. It was humiliating. Bad enough she was going to get away with murdering father but had she not class? Could she not at least put on a good performance and appropriately dress the part? Rebecca's fingers twisted in the delicate lawn handkerchief her grandmother had insisted she openly carry. Appearances, even in death, must be upheld. 'Unless you're the countess, then you ignore propriety in favor of dressing like some Drury lane doxy. It's alright of course, she's a grieving widow.'
“Can you believe her, that dress is absolutely scandalous,” someone behind them whispered. “I'm surprised the Dowager allowed her out in such a dress.”
“It's bait for the next one, no doubt,” another whispered. “I heard the Earl left everything to his bastard.”
Sucking in her cheeks, Rebecca bit down on the delicate flesh. The sharp pain and the coppery taste of blood were a perfect distraction from the drawing room gossip that was starting to seep into the memorial. Turning on them, demanding that they show some respect, would shift the focus off her step mother and onto herself. Aside from the one painfully true smear about her birth, the gossip was centered on the countess and Rebecca would like to keep it that way.

I'm a fan of a good romantic kiss and a steamy make-out, but I honestly can't stand most western media bc of the amount of gratuitous sex scenes they keep throwing at my face. I mean, if the show is solid with a good plot, good dialogue, good characters and world building, I tolerate that part of it, but most just rely on it to hide the fact that there’s little more of value to the show. It has honestly become the modern filler. The shows don't have enough plot or interesting dialogue to keep it going? Cut every 2 mins to a 5min explicit sex scene and there goes 2 thirds of your run time with no dialogue or plot...and I don't mind the ocasional sex scene but I want them to have a whole romantic arc leading up to that, not 2 strangers banging at every turn with everyone. I mean, I don't need ppl or characters to only have sex with the love of their lives, I just have absolutely no interest in watching it. Watching characters I have zero emotional attachment to and that have zero emotional attachment to each other pork is honestly porn...and while I have nothing against that, when I'm watching a show, I appreciated if they didn't flash me every 5 mins with porn pop up ad scenes like the average internet experience circa 2005.

Hi...how are you? If you don't mind me asking what are your top 5 favorite danmei novels (until now)? And why? Sorry if you've answered this question before.....
Hi, sorry for being slow at answering!
In no particular order:
Ok, so I liked the 3 from MXTX:
- Grandmaster of Diabolic Cultivation/ Mo Dao Zu Shi
This one I loved but it has a particular style that ppl might not like in that it feels jumpy, confusing and with information gaps while reading, even though eventually everything that matters does end up being explained...in other works this would probably be just lazy writing, but here it is clearly an intentional choice bc 1) she doesn’t do this in her other novels 2) this is in WWX’s pov and dude has heavy ptsd and adhd, plus he tends to pretend to take everything lightly as a coping mechanisms...all this put together and it’s easy to understand why the story has such an unreliable narrator that even the other characters constantly point it out. I ended up loving this extra layer of storytelling.
- Heaven Official’s Blessings/ Tian Guan Ci Fu
If you’re in the mood for a saga type long ass novel with a ton of interesting side stories and side characters with a main character who is a true cinnamon bun in sweet romance with a side dish of sweet sweet aaaangst.
- Scum Villains Self Saving System
The most entertaining out of all of them. It manages to be a parody of two genres, both danmeis and wuia/jianghu harem het novels (fighter of destiny style) with OP leads, while also being its own cute and funny story with a heart to it.
From other authors:
- Meatbun’s 2ha/ Dumb Husky and his White Cat Shizun
What if someone took a look at the parody that is SVSSS and said...”no, you know what? This really deserves to be an epic, long ass, and I mean, topping old classics’ length novel packed with angst, filled with pain and topped with despair...and then we’re sprinkling some funfetti on top to fool y’all”...and you know what? that’s some good cake. (If you’re into cdramas SVSSS is to 2ha what The Romance of Tiger and Rose is to Goodbye My Princess).
- Priest’s Sha Po Lang:
Steampunk China plus creepy voodoo tribal ritual magic, involved in internal and external wars over petrol (with a different name) and with our leads in Iron Man suits, fighting, among other enemies hot young(er) hands on, on the field, western troop General, the Pope, that I can only visualize in my head as Jude Law. I tell you all of this nonsense just to say that instead of the ridiculous fun this should be, it ends up being a very compelling romance with lots of scheming and heavy plot and some heartbreaking scenes.
- The Golden Stage:
This is a court drama type novel with friends-to-rivals-to-lovers that is just the right length and compelling with not too many plot twists but two main characters who are really great both individually and together and this is the one out of all in the list I feel like re reading the most. It really is a solid read and I feel like I’m selling it short, bc it really is good. It is similar to Sha Po Lang and To Rule in a Turbulent World, a simpler version of those but not worse for it.
(Since you said top 5 and I’ve said 6, I regretfully cut down Heaven Official’s Blessing bc even though I love it, unlike MDZS or SVSSS, it didn’t feel like a standalone novel because some of the several storylines of the side characters that I loved were left open ended (although the main characters had a complete story arc), as if this book was supposed to be the first of a series and those characters would have their own spinoff books where I’d know where their story took them...except this really is a standalone, and so the lack of resolution bothers me).
>> Honorable Mentions:
- To Rule in a Turbulent World
This one doesn’t go in the top 5 list yet bc it’s not fully translated, last time I checked (tho it’s very near the end). As an ongoing novel, I adore it. If the ending isn’t terrible it might be in my top 3. It’s similar to the two above in plotlines but it has a quality to it that it takes care to make every character in it multidimensional. There are no good and bad characters, even the ones on the opposite side are given something that makes them relatable and human. Plus, the characters all change throughout the novel, most of all the protagonists and the novel gives itself breathing time between events where you just chill with the characters and learn about random things like agricultural practices.
- The Wife Is First
This one is just that light fluff feel good one that is great to pick up from time to time since it’s on going. Dumb Jock husband did everything wrong in his first life, gets a re-do and from then on it’s adorable respect the spouse juice and awe of said spouse smarts. Cute. Also, there’s a baby pet tiger.

-Faraway Wanderers and Lord Seventh/Qi Ye by Priest:
Qi Ye is similar to To Rule in A Turbulent World/The Golden Stage/Sha Po Lang. I really liked it still, just a tiny bit less than these. Since it’s the same author as SPL and I think it was written earlier, I have to say, the writing only got better.
Faraway Wanderers is a short read, but you’re only gonna like it if you’re ok with amoral main characters (I guess that is true for many on this list but it’s more obvious in this one bc the novel and the characters are unapologetic about it).
- YuWu by Meatbun - Still reading it, but is isn’t grabbing me like 2ha did.

After reading a whole lot of danmeis by several different authors, I find the difference mindsets on morality by three of the most popular ones sort of funny :
MXTX: actions have consequences and when ppl have power those consequences might be terrible even if the intentions are good. Still staying true in one's heart is important. Also, fuck mob mentality, social media and peer pressure, and celeb internet culture. Anonymous masses are vultures and they can both be terrible on their own or easily manipulated and weaponized. (this last part is really the metaphoric message of the novels, not a reference to any lead actor’s scandals...which makes the whole irl thing even more ironic...and yes I know I’m using it wrong but if Alanis Morisette can, so can I).
Meatbun: Okay, the protagonist is scum. Not just regular scum. Psychotic Genocidal Totalitarian scum (also very into BDSM). Do you think he's bad in the first chapters? Oh he gets worse. Do you feel like stabbing him yet? Good! Only he is the biggest victim of them all and he is now horrified with his actions and bc actions matter regardless of personal excuses, he's gonna suffer with that knowledge forever. Suffer along as the lead pines, despairs and crawls on his path of redemption and neither you nor the characters will ever truly emotionally recover. Conclusion: If you honestly repent then there is a chance at redemption no matter the crime (how very catholic).
