Y'all can keep complaining about the lack of queer representation in anime, and the fact that when there is, it's usually censored. I mean, it breaks my heart to see that in 2022, a certain studio felt the need to cover up a kiss scene with a very convenient shot of a sword (Requiem of the Rose King, I'm looking at you!) Hell, I'm all for demanding more from these studios. It took us a while to get to Yuri On Ice where we had a gay relationship at the forefront (which, might I add, also had a kiss scene that was censored, a choice made outside of the creator's hands), and only about 5 years ago did Bloom Into You get adapted, plus Given shortly after that. Yeah, it's taken way too long for progressive anime to enter the limelight. Sure, there are a few wonderful queer series out there today (ex. Stranger by the Shore & Sasaki and Miyano) but when another series takes a step back from where we are, it's disappointing to say the least. That doesn't mean we should give up hope though. I believe it's important that we're grateful for what we have, and remember that anime won't always spell it out for us (cough cough SK8: the Infinity cough cough), and that's something we're unfortunately going to have to live with. Have hope, my friends. And if you're looking for a pick me up, a David Wald dub is always the way to go!

A teary eyed episode that ended with a kiss (unseen) but a kiss.

As Yutaka (INUKAI ATSUHIRO) opens up about his life as an orphan being taken in by a wealthy family (a relative I believe) that were very good to him (yeah okay) but a brother (their natural child) didn't seem to like him.

That sent young Yutaka into self isolation and eating alone.

Minoru (IIJIMA HIROKI) listens intently as Yutaka tears up recalling his childhood.

Later during a walk, Yutaka thanks Minoru and Minoru thanks Yutaka. Obviously something Yutaka doesn't recall but he apparently left quite an impression on Minoru. And it wasn't when Tane interrupted Yutaka during his rice ball lunch.

When did these two actually meet?

Not Me: The Series

Format: TV Show

Premise: White and Black are twins with a psychic connection that lets them feel each other's pain. Their parents are both powerful figures in the political world in Thailand, their dad a top ambassador and their mom a high level judge. However, as kids their parents divorce and White gets taken to Russia with his father. With the distance, the twin connection goes away and the boys loose contact. Years later, White returns to Thailand to follow his father's footsteps in becoming an ambassador. However, upon returning, the twin connection is reactivated as Black is beaten in a coma. Determined to find out what happened to his brother, White decides to pretend to be Black to find the culprit. But Black has changed a lot since they last met and is part of an anarchist biker gang set on destroying powerful corrupt figures in Thailand. White is then forced to grow closer to the members in the gang in order to find out if they had anything to do with what happened, and is left to question what he had always believed about society and politics.

Tone & Rating: more serious overall but has lighter and more humorous moments within. 13+ rating officially.

Setting/Genre: Political Drama/Action/University/Romance

Representation: the main couple are mlm and canonically bisexual. There is also a side mlm couple and a supporting trans woman character.

Disclaimers: one of the supporting characters is a cop, and while the show is very critical of the police and does not make any excuses for them (the cop's redemption involves him quitting being a cop), they are also very upfront with showing police brutality, so if you're sensitive to that, you should be careful with those scenes.

I know IsBanky isn't the only actor who has struggled to gain recognition in the industry (both Eastern and Western media). Add to the fact that Thai BL industry isn't exactly famous for being forgiving; many BL actors have confessed to experiencing the same, and sometimes worse treatment at some point in interviews (Saint Suppapong and Apo Nattawin come to mind, also most recently, YinWar). In hindsight, IsBanky's story is nothing new.

But watching IsBanky now, framed from this perspective, feels so heartbreaking just because I can FEEL that he's so earnest about making it in the industry. I'm not saying other artists aren't earnest about their careers as well, of course they are. It's just that-- IsBanky has been trying far too much for far too long with seemingly no fallback, and it just sank in through this confession that nothing has come of it until now. He tried and failed to launch a modelling career after joining The Face Thailand 4 years ago. I remember he was announced for several castings since 2018, and over the years he would post pictures on set, but the only time I remember seeing him on screen was for a small role in Gen Y season 2 last year. He's been launching music under different companies that haven't gained any traction, even released songs in other languages (apart from Dancing With The Devil) which is sad considering that unlike other actors selling albums, IsBanky can actually sing. For a brief time he would post vlogs and travel videos on his own via social media (he went overseas a few times), again none of which gained significant viewership. He would go on live for hours just to look for his own sponsors, and even on their recent vlogs he and Mos would vie for sponsorship and products through personal shoutouts (kinda cringe, but I really can't fault them for the hussle). From what I could glean, he stopped further schooling to focus on his media career, choosing instead to take up acting and singing lessons to help his case.

It just feels like, unlike other actors competing for the same goal, IsBanky has his heart set on this and ONLY this, and suffering for so long with little payoff is truly heartbreaking. Not just for him, but for any other person deadset on a specific, but difficult dream. Especially while hearing stories about how audiences shun you for your physical appearance and your mannerisms.

And though IsBanky may not be the most talented person on the block, I think he deserves props for trying his best to be the best. I pray it gets better for him (and Mos Lhong too; it's really touching how IsBanky found someone who is, ostensibly, on the same wavelength about work as he is). I hope he gets more chances in the cutthroat industry and that both he and Mos surround themselves with people who'll support them (I also hope they keep supporting each other. I hope they genuinely are friends; it would help ease the struggle to have someone on your side).

This got too long, I'm sorry. I didn't even realize I was a fan of IsBanky at all-- I just like watching modelling shows, and their Mongbiew (biaw?) Vlogs are genuinely comforting. And Big Dragon is a trash watch but in all the right, enjoyable places. All the best for these two people.

Counter-Side Dev Log #1 - 11/03/23

In an attempt to seem much more professional than I am, I've decided to give monthly dev logs a shot!

I'll keep individual projects sperate, so if you're here for Fetch Re;Quest stuff, keep an eye out for another post later this month.

Please bear with me as I figure out what the hell I'm doing 😂 And let me know if you like this kind of content, or if I should just stick to my random updates!

So anyways...

As a quick catch-up; Counter-Side is a kinetic BL sci-fi drama. It's about two men who live and work in a capitalistic hellscape- A mining facility on the barren, atmosphere-less planet of Ikarus.

But the story's not really about that. It's about two men who've been unlucky in relationships becoming friends and hanging out at a bar. It's a BL, so I think you see where this is going.

The Boys

Counter-Side has lots of fun (and not so fun) characters, but let's just focus on the two protagonists for now.

Transferred from his home facility to this one for mysterious reasons, Rae is the new Human Resources Manager for the software engineering department.

Rae is calm and collected... or so he'd like people to think. In truth, his inner thoughts are much more fiery than his reserved persona lets on. With a short temper and a protective streak, it's a constant struggle for Rae to keep his head down and his thoughts to himself.

Rae is not interested in dating at the moment, because as much as he hates to admit it, someone else still occupies that place in his heart.

His drink of choice is the gin and tonic 🍸

Stationed at the facility for military training, Rosco works as part of the mining crew by piloting a mech that houses an experimental sapient AI named MARC.

He may have only been here for half a year, but he already has a reputation; Everyone knows that Rosco, the hotshot playboy pilot, never turns down a date. Little do they know that rather than playing the field, Rosco is a hopeless romantic who simply doesn't want to miss an opportunity to find his one true love.

Currently in his longest running relationship, Rosco is determined to make things work and prove that he's not the flighty, promiscuous one-night-stand that everyone makes him out to be... no matter what he has to give up in the process.

Rosco's preferred drink is anything colorful and fruity 🍹

Chapter Select

And now on to the more technical aspects of the game!

Counter-Side is kinetic, which means there are not choices or multiple endings. It's a linear story told in three acts, but there is a bit of interactivity when it comes to how the chapters work.

(The UI is just a placeholder for now, if it wasn't obvious from Rosco's rather... colorful outfit.)

The story is told from both Rae and Rosco's perspectives, so after each act's linear opening, you'll get the option to choose what order to read things in, chapter by chapter. Once you reach the end of the act in one character's chapters, their option will be locked until you finish the other character's side.

Most chapters are completely unique scenes, but sometimes, Rae and Rosco are in the same place. These key moments are called Counter-Side chapters, and you get to experience them from both men's perspectives. The dialogue may be the same, but Rae and Rosco will have different narration and inner thoughts about what's happening, and they often start and/or end the scene apart.

Counter-Side chapters account for about 35% of the total number of chapters.

The Demo

We're currently working on a demo that will feature the entire first act- Over 50k words! It might be missing the final UI design and some cut-in art, but other than that it will be feature complete.

After that, we don't expect the full game will be more than a few months away.

The script for the game is about 3/4ths finished and we have the rest of it already outlined. The current word count clocks in at over 130k words 😭 It's gonna be a long one.

We haven't settled on a price yet, but the full game will not be free.

One of the most powerful things in My Tooth Your Love is that we're invited into not just Bai Lang's trauma but into his coping methods and how we can see them again and again and we can understand him.

He views his love as dangerous, sees needing someone as sentencing runneth to death. He listened to his parents die racing home to him and he's held that blame in his heart his entire life. His fault. Him and his tooth, him and his love, him and his need, him and his pain... that killed his parents. His love, his need to be supported, his weakness, killed them and took them away forever.

Xun'an is the first person he's told the story to, the first person he's starting to trust. His sister doesn't even know what happened or why he stopped relying on her, why he stopped looking to get, why his love suddenly became a thing of distance and laughter instead of need and closeness.

Bai Lang had made a home and love of toys because toys don't die, toys don't leave, toys don't go, toys are there and safe.

He sees Xun'an loving him and all he sees are all the ways his love can hurt him, kill him, leave them both alone, drag him down, break his heart... and that him isn't just Xun'an or himself its both of them.

Bai Lang wants to take a risk on his love but first he had to confront the trauma that shaped how he's learned to live, he has to have the coping methods he developed from trauma dismantled.

Xun'an suggesting therapy was one of the greatest things to every happen in a show because it's recognizing that what Bai Lang has experienced and has lived with and through its not just serious but matters and that finding a better way to move forward also matters. That he doesn't have to be alone but also that love itself isn't enough to fix something or someone. Help comes in so many forms, personal and professional.

I hope we do get, at least, the implication that Bai Lang does go to therapy, that he does get outside help, because it's important to know that love isn't the fix for everything but it can be the catalyst to finding a better way.

Sharing the trailer for my upcoming dark BL visual novel, All Scars and Starlight! Scars is a pretty Sad story set in the fictional kingdom of Indra. Yuel, the country's corrupt king, is ousted from his position by his older cousin, Tavi, who takes Yuel a prisoner and assumes the throne in his stead. Tavi has lingering feelings of fondness towards his younger cousin, however, and can't bring himself to have Yuel executed despite his advisors' advice. Not wanting the blood of his own family member on his hands, Tavi hides Yuel in the palace and tries to look after him in secrecy. Yuel doesn't want to be taken care of by the man who ruined his life, however, and he's largely unmoved by Tavi's attempts to care for him. The more Yuel pulls away, the more obsessed Tavi becomes, and a very toxic and uncomfortable relationship begins to form between the captor and the captive. This visual novel has choices and multiple endings, so you can determine just how dark and depressing their story becomes. There is a single happy ending hidden away in here too, but it might take a bit of doing to achieve. The VN can be wishlisted on Steam here! Do note: this is an r18 BL visual novel with explores a pretty uncomfortable and unhealthy relationship. The two leads are also first cousins, so you might want to give this a pass if you think this sounds too upsetting.
