This is probably a hot take but I don't think anybody actually cares who Batman is outside of the GCPD and conspiracy theorists.
When Batman first shows up he's a friggen poltergeist. He's a cryptid. For a second there maybe people thought he was just a creepypasta.
Then when people start to think… actually it kinda seems like he's a guy…? Like, he's a real…? Person…???
Then the GCPD is like, 'Okay, well, then he's breaking laws.'
But your average schmo is like, 'And? Yeah he's a guy; he gave me fifty bucks to get home last night. Right after he saved me from an acid piranha pit.'
But the thing is, Bats has his own personality. He's a whole person as the mask. People don't ask who Superman's secret identity is because, as far as they're concerned, Superman is just Superman, and when they can't see him, it's because he went home. It would be the same with Batman. They probably think he sleeps or hangs upside-down all day.
I think Gothamites like him as Just Batman; he's the city's pet monster, and they like it that way.
I think we get super caught up in the, "Batman's secret identity might be revealed! 😱" because Batman's secret identity is famous. But if someone unmasked Clark or Barry or Hal it would be like
"…I have no idea who this is."
And they expect the same of Batman.
GCPD wants to know so they can arrest him, conspiracy theorists want to know because they wanna know where he fits into the machine, gossip columnists want to know so they can get catch some drama, and real-person fanfic authors wanna know so they can accurately describe him when he takes his mask off to kiss Bruce Wayne.

Goth-Pod Ep 5: Gotham Troubles
Welcome Back! Listening to you send ins, Juda Boone talks about things by Gothamites, for Gothamites!
[goth-pod is a fictional in-universe podcast based on the DC comics universe. Juda Boone is an original fictional character, not based on any real person or known comic book character.]
Transcript under the cut
Hello everyone and welcome to Goth-Pods special trials and troubles episode! I’m an indie theater’s take on the ghost of Christmas Present- and your host, Juda Boone.
We're looking at your submitted trademark Gotham problems. So without my usual ramblings, lets get to business
For our first submission username Trekkle brought up a good debate: Subway vs Bus: The Subway is safer, since buses can get hit during rogue attacks, but if you're stuck underground there's a chance of a killer croc attack and also the birds ride the roof.
Fantastic points, Trekkle! Thank you for writing in. I don't know exactly what you mean by the birds riding the roof, though. Do you mean Robin? Because I have been on the tram while a fight was happening between Robin and The Penguin on top. Of course, I missed most of it because I had my headphones in. Noise cancellation has its pros and cons in Gotham.
There’s no set answer on this one, I don’t think. You kind of have to pay attention to what Rouges are active the way you pay attention to the weather. Cloudy with a 70% chance of a Riddler scheme? Maybe take the Buses, since they’re not connected to a maze-like system like  the subways are. But maybe it's sweater weather with a possible freeze-over because Victor Fries broke out two nights ago and is due for a showy return. Then an underground bunker with cushy seats doesn’t sound too bad.
From Clexx we have: I'm new to Gotham (full ride scholarship, thank you Mr. Wayne): Why does everyone hate Superman? I tried to get answers from a friend and they called Superman a Homewrecker. Is there an infidelity scandal around Superman I don’t know about??
Oh wow. First of all, congratulations on the scholarship! I'm assuming you're attending Gotham U? Just be sure you get a proper Rogue-proof gas mask. Yes there is a difference. It’ll probably be covered in your Orientation though, so onto the main question.
To the Homewrecker comment.. oh I didn’t think it’d come to this. Okay, there's this thing in Gotham. Clexx, have you ever heard of Bruceman? Ask your friend about it, they’ll probably love to explain more. Basically it is a Real-Person based Ship on Gotham’s two protectors, Bruce Wayne and Batman. One watching over the day, the other the night.
This is another Topic that might take all episodes to explain, so to keep it short: People see Superman and Batman’s relationship- professional, platonic, romantic, or however they define it- as a threat to Bruceman, the number one Gotham Ship. Godspeed if you get between our beloved prettyboy himbo and our odd night-stalking cryptid.
From Allison: My cousin is visiting and I want to show them why I stay in Gotham. Where can we go for 1) a low level rogue attack (for Bat sighting), and 2) where can we go for a Wayne sighting. (They think Dick Grayson is hotter then Brucie [eye-rolling emoji])
For the first one, I think any part of our public transport system will do, as we discussed before. The tricky part is knowing when it’s going to be low-level or if your cousin will be joining you in a shelter-in-place lockdown.
For a Wayne sighting, unfortunately it’s harder to say these days. Bruce Wayne has made several statements on how he’s spending less time at the company in order to focus on bonding with his new son, Jason. I hate to disappoint, but right now might not be the time for celebrity sight-seeing. Maybe take a day trip to Bludhaven! Your cousin might enjoy the chance to convince you instead.
Thank you all for writing in and for joining us on this special episode! If we didn’t get to your submission, head over to our socials to see if we replied there. I’m Juda, you’re listening to Goth-Pod
Until then, Newcomers, visiting cousins, locals on the bus, Stay safe, Gotham.

so like. i'm very conflicted about bruce wayne. when i see superbat stuff i'm all 🥰🥰🥰 but then i think of him with his kids and the way he's treated them and and and i very much want to curb stomp him until he resembles wet cat food. what's up with that?
That's totally normal 😂 I am often feeling a very strong desire to beat that horrible old man with a spiked club, but I also love him to bits!
Contrary to popular belief(?) I don't hate Bruce. I'm pissed with the tendency to pretend he's never done anything wrong. "But I can pick what's canon and what's not!" some people say, and like... I don't really agree with that sentiment but if you want to pretend that Bruce never abused his kids I cannot stop you. Go ahead and live your favorite version of reality, it's still all fiction anyway so who cares. But stop telling people that Bruce abusing people is out of character. IT'S NOT OOC IF IT'S IN THE TEXT GODDAMMIT IDC IF IT DOESN'T FIT YOUR PERSONAL IDEA OF CANON STFU
In general, I would love it if we as the human race stopped acting like DC comics are this wholesome PG13 family friendly thing where everyone is nice and they love each other and nothing bad ever happens, and Bruce would never hurt the people he loves UwU He's such a fantastic dad omg I want to be adopted by him.
That being said. Bruce is my little meow meow. I am SO TRIGGERED by the way he abuses his kids especially Dick and Jason, especially when the writers know what they're doing and employ real existing abuse tactics that are present in toxic families. God it gives me the hives, and I am THERE for it, it's so cathartic. I also love it when he's a fucking hypocrite and treats criminals like shit, and when he's an absolute bitch who will lord over other heroes for no reason and be generally insufferable, because NEWSFLASH, loving a flawed character who does BAD THINGS is normal!
Also, he and Clark are very cute.

Honest opinion of the members of your polycule?
Well...
I think Bruce is an incredible guy, even when he's silly and flirty. Sometimes he acts like someone else, like he's unsure of himself, but I love him as he is. He always makes me smile when he's being himself.
I used to think Batman was just a grumpy jerk who got a hit out of beating sick people on the streets, but when Superman introduced me to him and we spent enough time together, I understood that he's doing what he can to help the people of his city, and I respect that. He's a bit pessimistic, but I love his snarky puns whenever I manage to hear one out of him.
As for Superman, that's a tough one. We know each other for the longest, and honestly Kal feels more like a best friend than a lover to me sometimes, although we are technically in a relationship. He's a bit stubborn but he's just trying to protect the ones he loves. He loves playing the hero with Brucie and Bats, while with me he'll mostly be there to give me some light whenever I'm conflicted, and I try to do the same for him. I'm glad he landed on this one out of all the billions of planets out there.

Headcanon that Gotham has a fantastic permaculture scene
It started out as a preventative measure, because mowing your lawn and spraying herbicide in a city where Poisom Ivy can and will address the complaints of the affected plants in homicide first and writing second is a stupid idea. But then the residents went "oh hey, this is actually. Really nice"
And so their gardens are full of flowers native to the Gotham area and their parks are full of fruit trees. Where an area of short plant is needed for recreation purposes, they use selectively bred grass that doesn't grow above ankle height, instead sinking all of its energy into growing four foot long roots. Patches of vegetables line the sides of the road
It gets to the point where if someone asks Poisom Ivy to please help them find this one rare wildflower seed so they can grow it in their garden and take it from the brink of extinction, she will drop everything to help them out. (A girl once did this when Poison Ivy was fighting Batman. She and the girl walked along the bottom of a nearby ravine, dragging Batman, tied up in vines, behind them like a reluctant dog. He eventually spotted the plant, and Ivy checked on the girl's garden weekly to make sure the new seedlings were doing well)
Eventually, Wayne Manor turns its sprawling lawn into a food forest, complete with hills and streams and wildlife. Properly compensated labourers pick the food and it gets donated to the city. There are so many fruits and vegetables in the city that anyone can take that no one goes hungry
(Eventually, Ivy starts taking day trips to Metropolis. Not to cause any trouble, just to stand there as a warning. Eventually Metropolis starts doing the same)

Goth-Pod Ep 8: BruceMan
Welcome back and buckle up! Host Juda Boone contemplates and conspires about the #1 ship of Gotham City: Bruce Wayne x Batman.
[goth-pod is a fictional, in-universe podcast based on the DC comics universe. Juda Boone is an original fictional character, not based on any real person or known comic book character.]
Transcript under the cut
Hello everyone and welcome back! This is Goth-Pod, your Gotham based podcast. Speaking to you today is your favorite undiagnosed host, Juda Boone.
In today’s episode we are going deeper into something I touched on in our special Gotham troubles episode. Something that has been heavily requested. Today, we are talking about the Gotham phenomenon of BruceMan.
BruceMan is the real-person ship of Bruce Wayne and Batman. Gotham’s preserver of the day, and her watchdog of the night.
Without saying too much on my own opinions of the ship, I do understand the appeal of soft, tender hands holding onto claws.
Bruce Wayne is a rich man, yes, but he does not forget the things Gotham took from him. He doesn't brush off the tragedy that is his city and ignore it within the safety of his tower.
He and his company put in the work everyday to try and make sure that when those tragedies strike, that people have the resources to keep themselves afloat.
And yes, I said when. Wayne recognizes that there isn't much he can do to stop it from striking. Unlike Batman, who is out every night to prevent.
They balance each other like that. They both love the city, and have different places where they can help. I think that's where people get the idea that they could fall in love.
The interactions of Batman rescuing the Prince of Gotham could be just that- interactions between a victim and a vigilante. The Bat saves a lot of people.
But people see the opportunity for more.
For the record: Wayne hasn’t commented on the Ship at any point through the years.
Can you imagine it, though? Locking eyes with someone who is so fundamentally different from you, yet you’re the same down to your core. You share a love for a City that is incapable of loving you back. But this person, or thing, in front of you, is an extension of that City. And if they can love you, then it’s an extension of that love.
I’m getting poetic again, but it’s hard not to when you look at these two and how they parallel each other so well. Even without the romantic lens, it’s interesting to think of Gotham’s favorite son and her protective Bat.
I spoke more on Bruce Wayne here because.. Not much is known about the Bat’s true motives. There are no interviews of our resident shadow to dissect on how he feels about Gotham or about Wayne. Even after years since his appearance, its speculation. And so is this ship.
I enjoy it most when it's all in good fun.
Thanks for joining in today. I’m Juda, you’re listening to Goth-Pod. Until next time, stay safe, Gotham.

I love your deep dives into the relationships between batman and other characters, because it feels like DC has set it up so that if you look even slightly below the surface of Bruce Wayne's character, you realize just how awful of a person he is. He's selfish and mopey, and values his moral code so highly that he's willing to let countless people die to hold onto his own perceived "good"-ness. I feel like he's created more supervillians than he's successfully stopped.
Thanks anon, and yeah I more or less agree with you. Bruce is deeply flawed and written in a way that more often than not reflects the DC directions of misogyny and enforcing of patriarchal stereotypes, but in a way that's also what makes the character so fascinating to read.
I dislike the exaggerated versions of "good dad Bruce who loves his children above all else" because they're false. Bruce loves some of the vigilante kids he's taken under his roof but his love is conditional; it's not the kind of unbridled affection that comes from a parent, instead manifesting in the form of what little praise and approval he shows towards his "kids" when they act in a way he deems correct. And I especially dislike when fans try to push the "the girls are undoubtedly his favorites" narrative because it couldn't be less true, and he doesn't give a shit about Cass and Steph (they've barely even been there after the reboot anyway). But even if I hate Bruce Wayne as a person, I love him as a character.
Bruce is a very dark character who connects more to someone like Joker than to his own family and friends. He's a prisoner of his own traumas in a way which makes him look constantly wounded, constantly suffering, and everyone around him tends to get sucked into and dragged down by his darkness. He's terribly flawed, and his moral code and perceived goodness is flawed too, but he still holds it as the ultimate standard of righteousness and it doesn't matter who you are and what you do - if you don't abide by it, you lose Bruce's affection and respect. He not only doesn't kill, but would do anything to protect the lives of the people who he claims to want to stop, and when he's written by someone competent, Bruce himself is painfully aware of this and of how much he should be behind the same bars behind which he keeps locking the "rogues".
Because of this, when he shows compassion and understanding it comes off as extremely powerful. When he praises one of his "kids" it feels like the ends of the world. When someone manages to make him light up it feels like the ultimate accomplishment. When in some variants he's shown more human and less stoic, it grips my heart so tight. He's absolutely an awful person but I suppose it does take an awful person to dress like a bat every night and go beat up folks in the street.

I mean Conner wasn’t saying anything wrong tho
From what I've observed I can say that, when you wear the House of El symbol, you can't go around seeking beef with other heroes, especially the ones you don't know yet.
I mean, Superman once did that and look where it got him: Batman found his only weakness and proceeded to beat the life out of him!
Fortunately Mr. Wayne convinced both to get along when he started dating them, otherwise Superman would regret making fun of Batman's suit.
