Oh, the ongoing saga of my bad tempered blood sugars, lol.
So the last few days, they've been inexplicably high almost all the time.
Then last night....bang. Low all night. What the actual?? Anyway, mostly because of that, I've had a very bad night. Awake multiple times after taking much longer than usual to get to sleep. Then fully awake at 3.30am. Yay.....😳😩.
So I did what any normal person does in such a situation. I got up and did a glute/hamstring strength workout.
Then I had a decaff.
Soon after, back to the highs. Yeah....whatevs, lol.
And it's been high all morning once again.
So I did some cardio before my wonderful breakfast at 15hrs.
No discernable sunrise again, sadly, but still time in as much natural light as I can get.
Today I shall be surviving mostly on caffeine and cortisol....
It's a xmas eve tradition to open one present. And this is a perfect gift for me from my fabulous man. Decent coffee and walnuts! He knows me pretty well.
We're heading off in the morning to spend Xmas and Boxing day with family. Staying overnight in the motorhome. So I've prepared lunch and fruit for whilst we're there.
This is how I roll. I'll definitely eat more than usual, but I won't eat any less healthily!

New Diagnosis
Thoughts for the day (12 July 2023)
So yesterday I went to see my Nurse Practitioner for a belated appointment - missed the last one. Went through some of the bloodwork as my sugars have been elevated for a while so now I have a diagnosis of Type II Diabetes. In a way it’s not surprising - both my parents have the same diagnosis. I’d been losing weight (~15lbs) in 6 months without trying. My NP has put me on Metformin (250mg twice a day to start for 2 weeks, then 500mg twice a day), and testing sugars 2-3 times a day to get an idea of what time of day my sugars are spiking.
I picked up the meds and the Diabetic supplies (monitor, lancets, test strips, sharps container) and started them yesterday. Have the monitor syncing to my phone so I can more easily track testing. I’m so used to having regular sodas and the like (sweet tooth), so I’ve started trying limit sugar intake - body not used to that, bit of a shock to the system. And I can’t drink diet sodas because of the aspartame - I’m allergic - it triggers migraines. So not only a change in dietary intake needed, a new mindset is needed. Will see how this goes.
I also got some more pain prescription medication (Naproxen 500mg) for carpal tunnel syndrome to take on an as needed basis when I have flare-ups.

[Dr. Garth Davis:] This idea that carbs make you fat is utterly ridiculous. Carbs cannot make you fat in and of themselves. We have storage in our muscles and in our liver for carbs called glycogen. So, when we eat carbs, we either store it or we burn it. Now, eat fat...that goes straight to your fat. Your body can’t turn those carbs into fat unless you’re really overdoing your calories.
[Dr. Neal Barnard:] Here’s the thing, if I eat a sugary cookie, the sugar lures you in like the Trojan Horse but waiting inside that cookie is a huge load of butter or shortening and that’s what fattens you up. That’s the part that leads to the diabetes. It’s the fatty foods, not really so much the sugar.

it's so wild to be a fat person and to go to the doctor and to have them be overwhelmingly kind to you and take your concerns seriously and give you actionable non-weight-loss-related advice on how you can solve ur issue. dude I didn't know they made doctors like that.

I used to love those anti diet posts that were like "eat that cake. eat that chocolate. do what feels good babe" because they enabled me to keep harming my vital organs. Now they make me want to scream bc like girl I would LOVE to. I'm fighting the urge every second. But I would sugar dose myself into a diabetic coma if I just did what felt good. I would bleed myself into iron deficiency if I did what felt good. Doing what feels good would cause some of my favourite organs to stop functioning. It's made me realize... Doing what feels good is a privilege not all are blessed with.

Recent stuff in my life got me thinking can people in omegaverse smell when someone has diabetes/insulin resistance in general???? Now im pretty sure this is a trait only dogs can have, not wolves, but who gives a shit we're all dogos in here. Like, it's definitely possible. Maybe Diabetic people would give off a scent of something sickly sweet mixed in with their actual scent?
Gimme your thoughts!!!

Today marks the anniversary of being Diagnosed with Diabetes. I had been feeling shitty for quite some time beforehand and in retrospective, the signs were all symptoms of undiagnosed diabetes.
Theres no weaselling out of responsibility, taking the easy way out of blaming genetics or unfortunate circumstances, the diabetes was a devil of my own making. A result of imcredibly destructive and unhealthy lifestyle choices over a prolonged time.
I still remember the day My gp's asistant called and insisted on a fast appointment. It was a bit unusual, I just thought it would be another "be aware of the future impact of your choices" pep talknfro my doc. It wasnt, he flatout, no mercy smacked the diagnosis into my face. An incredibly harsh, yet effective wakeup call. Instantly Inwent home, poured all tge coke in my fridge into the toilet (bottles were opened and prepared withnfreshly squeezed lime juice, the closed ones i had i donated to a coworker) and gave away all overly unhealthy food items i had in my possession.
Called and made a Diabetologist appointment the next morning. hbpa 11 % Hardcore bad. I was enrolled in a course for Type 2 Diabetics, I had to attend once a week over a few months. I learned the basics and got taught a few tricks and was told that for starters, just switching out things for healthy alternatives is fine, change needs to come slow, carefully. I was probably the only one who 100% religiously followed the courses lessons and brought weekly blood sugar measurement values in.
What was the most incredibly hard to pull off change was carbs. You dont realize how carb heavy your diet is until you look to change it. I tried to keep my pure carb content at 100g daily, maximum!!! That led me to stick with a very heavy protein and low fiber diet. Naturally that took only a short time till that caused a whole row od side issues i still struggle with now (to a much lesser degree, but still).
This april things hit a dead stop and over a period of 1 month I hit the lows and highs of digestive problems too grtesque, horrifying and panful to publically disclose. It was at times so bad it drove me to a place too dark too describe. But witg perseverance, help from my friends, physicians and even coworkers I made it through that time aswell.
I stll occasionally struggle with issues and have a bad say now and again, often to the detriment of my mental state. But thats also something I am now seeing someone about.
One year later from the startbof everything, I sit in my favorite cafe and reflect. It was an insanely eventful and difficult year. A year defined by willpower, change, endurance, struggle, pain but also by health, new perspective and positivity. All in all, I think its been a rather positive change altogether. I lost more than 60 kg over this year and my hbpa is now 4.8% (really excellent for a diabetic) and even my blood pressure has stabilized by alot.
I thank my friends, family, coworkers, therapists and all physicians who stood by me during this difficult time. I sincerely could not have done it wthout all of you. As I sit here in my cafe, I lift my triple espresso (no milk foam) and have a cup for all of you and hope for a better future and more positive change in the coming times.
So take it from me: always have enough fiber in your diet and use healthy alternatives wherever possible (wholegrain pasta instead of white flour)

today is Mom's birthday, but we had her dinner last night since Dad works today and might be home late. so, today we're going to putter around town with my aunt. she wants to go to the Big Mall again, which is fine, but she also really wants to try this Peruvian restaurant in the NE part of the city that her friend recommended for lunch and idk how to explain to her that it's on the polar opposite side of the city and Calgary is not as compact as Edmonton (anything she wants at home is available in like a 20 min drive). I'm hoping she'll concede and we can just go to the Peruvian restaurant that's like 20 mins south of the mall instead...
anyway, going to be an interesting day.
