2021:7-Meeting
Every year, Alphas and Omegas got together, at a ball, to meet up for an attempted courtship. Once an Alpha or Omega presented, it was instantly recorded as your secondary gender. Betas were never invited, as it was tradition for Alphas to choose Omegas. Omegas were protective of their pups. They were powerful, caring, motherly, while Betas were practically human. Betas were always a mystery to Alphas. They never knew how the person would truly act, but it wasn't forbidden for an Alpha to choose one. It was just that Alphas and Omegas shared a bond. They each carried a wolf inside, who could sense who their other half was. It was physically painful to choose someone other then who your wolf chose, so not many did.
Marinette looked around the room from against the wall. It was the first time she had been allowed to go to the ball. Her parents were afraid that if they sent her to the others, she would get marked and taken, never to be heard from again. This time the ball was in Paris and they knew several people in attendance. On the Alpha side was Adrien, Kagami, Alix, and Kim. The Omegas, like her, were Nathaniel, Odine, and Luka.
Marinette looked at the Alpha side and sighed. It came as a shock to everyone when both Adrien and Kagami presented into Alphas. They had stopped dating soon after. She had hoped several times, since she presented, that she would catch Adrien's eye, but her wolf felt nothing for him. If anything, it told her to stop pining for something that would never happen and slowly, her feelings faded.
Damian sighed as he got out of the car. He hated going to the stupid courting balls. His father had Selina, but he came to make sure the rest of them stayed on their best behavior. He and Todd were the remaining available Alphas, Tim was a Beta and happily announced it every time the ball came around, while Dick was the Omega they all looked after.
The moment he entered the giant room, he smelled himself in a field of flowers.
'Mate! Strong!'
'Omega?'
'Strong Omega.'
Damian quickly looked around the room, trying to follow the scent. He quickly barreled through the other guests, ignoring his family's calls. Damian took a deep breath, stopping when he noticed the scent coming from a petite girl, standing alone.
'Found her.'
Marinette sighed again, as she kept her eyes on the tips of her heels.
'Maybe this is why Maman and Papa never let me come to these. This is sad, humiliating, and I just want to go home. It's torture waiting for someone to come up to me.'
Marinette was about to go get a drink, when she noticed a pair of black shoes in front of her. Slowly, she raised her head to meet a male with dark green eyes.
'Beautiful.'
"Little Omega." Damian voiced.
Marinette could feel the wolf inside her howl. It was crying out to him. Was his calling out to hers?
'Mate! He found us!'
"Hello, Alpha." Marinette blushed.
Damian couldn't understand how this cute Omega hadn't been claimed yet. She had big blue, doe like eyes and a round face. She was petite and seemed weak, but the call his wolf heard said that was not the case.
"Would you do me the honor and dance with me?" he questioned with a bow.
Marinette smiled, "The honor is all mine."
As they moved onto the dance floor, several members of their pack and friends, kept a close watch on them.
"Where are you from?" Damian asked.
"I live here, in Paris." she answered, "What about you?"
"I'm from out of the country. I live in the United States with Father." he stated.
"Oh." Marinette frowned, "Are members of your pack here?"
"Some." The Wayne heir spoke, "And you?"
Marinette shook her head, "My parents are betas. I'm an only child."
Damian gulped.
'This could get complicated fast! Would they allow me to take her? I would prefer to have her in Gotham with me.'
"I am the only blood heir, but my father has brought many into our pack." he explained, making Marinette smile.
"May I cut in?" spoke a voice.
Damian and Marinette turned to see a tall man with deep red hair and blue eyes. They could see the sly smile on his face. Mari tightened her grip on Damian and he instantly went into defensive mode. His eyes began to glow a lighter shade of green as he began to growl. The man quickly made sure to make his distance known, as Bruce approached them. He noticed Damian's eyes fade back to their normal shade and looked at the girl in his arms.
Bruce smiled, "Perhaps, we should go and meet your parents. I'm Bruce Wayne; Damian's father."
Marinette smiled and nodded, keeping her hand in Damian's. Damian seemed to sulk under his father's gaze. As they left the party, Bruce made sure to let his other kids know that Damian had a potential and they were on their way to speak to her parents.
"So, Lila, what was the ball like?" Rose asked, curiously.
'Did I hear that right? Lila isn't an Alpha or Omega; she would never be allowed at the ball.'
"She wasn't there." declared Kim.
"What?" questioned Mylene.
"Lila didn't go to the ball." Alix replied, "We didn't see her there."
"I didn't go because I went to see my potential mate, Damian Wayne, in Gotham." Lila answered.
"Wow." Alix spoke, "You really are a liar."
"What?" shouted Sabrina.
"What are you talking about?" cried Alya.
"Damian Wayne and several member of his father's pack were at the ball." stated Nathaniel and then smiled, "In fact, Damian Wayne, selected his Omega at the ball. She left with him."
Lila quickly covered her face and shook her shoulders, "He promised to choose me!"
"Oh, Lila!" Alya cried, quickly pulling the girl into a hug.
"Hold on a minute!" shouted Nino, "You just said that you were in Gotham with him, so how could he have been here in Paris?"
Lila opened her mouth when a couple people stepped back to await her answer. Before she could answer, Adrien walked in.
"Hey, Adrien!" Kim announced, "It was so nice to see you at the ball."
The class turned to look at him. Adrien could sense soemthing had happened, but decided to ignore it since he didn't know wither way.
"Did you find an Omega?" Nino asked
Adrien sighed and shook his head.
"What about Lila?" offered Alya, moving her towards him.
"Lila wasn't there." Adrien scoffed, pushing past her to stand by Kim, Alix, and Nathaniel, "Only five of us from the class went and she wasn't the fifth."
"You know, Adrien, I was really shocked who went home with Damian Wayne." Alix smiled.
"I know!" he smiled, "I'm so happy for her! I stopped by her parent's house over the weekend, she hasn't been home since the ball."
"Wow!" Kim exclaimed, "She's gonna get pupped!"
Adrien blushed and nodded, "I suppose so."
"What about Kagami?" questioned the red head, "I know you two had ....something."
The Agreste heir shrugged, "Once we got our stations, we broke it off. Didn't seem to bother us. Besides, I think she took Luka. Looks like you'll have a sister soon, Juleka."
Juleka smiled, happily.
"Did you guys get anyone?" he asked.
"Odine and I are taking it slow." commented Kim.
Alix shrugged and sighed, "I have my eye on someone, but they haven't made my wolf howl."
Nathaniel blushed, "I had my eyes on someone, but they presented as an Omega recently."
"Sorry, Nath." Adrien answered in understanding.
Kim smiled, "It was shocking to see Damian's eyes change color when that other Alpha tried to talk with his Omega."
"Who?" asked Sabrina.
Adrien tilted his head in confusion, "Who Is Damian Wayne's Omega?"
"Is she another celebrity?" asked Rose.
"Is she from Gotham?" questioned Ivan.
"You didn't tell them?" Adrien asked Kim, Alix, and Nathaniel.
"We didn't get the chance." Nath answered.
Adrien turned to the rest of the class and smiled brightly, "Damian Wayne's fated Omega is Marinette Dupain-Cheng."
The class couldn't believe what they were hearing. Marinette was Damian's Omega.
"She looked really pretty in that dress, didn't she?" asked Alix.
"Yeah. I have never seen her so dressed up. I was about to ask her to dance, for old times sake, but I saw him beeline towards her and figured that was what she was." Adrien smiled, "I'm so happy for her. She's always been a cute little Omega. It's a shame my wolf never howled for her. I would have liked having her as my Omega to carry my liter. Kagami has said so, too."
The two other Alphas nodded in agreement. Marinette was so sweet and kind. If she hadn't set off their Alpha insticts, it would have confused them. She was protective and had a motherly aura.
"Think we'll see her today?" Nino asked, "I want to offer my congradulations."
"I don't know." Adrien replied, "I don't even know if she's gonna come back here."
"What do you mean?" questioned Mylene.
"Damian is from Gotham." responded Alix.
"Usually Omegas are taken in by their Alpha's pack." declared Kim, "They decide where their mates go."
"So?" snubbed Alya.
Nathaniel sighed, "It means she might move to Gotham and we'll never see her again, unless we have permission to visit. Alpha-Omega customs are really complex, but at the same time, traditional."
The class remained silent. It was now obvious that Lila had been lying to them about her station as the four known to the class, glared at her. She would have answered along with them. Not to mention, as Nino pointed out, she claimed to be in Gotham. Her so-called mate had picked Marinette instead. Since Mari had been announced as Damian Wayne's mate, Lila had kept her mouth shut.
Marinette arrived to class a week later, only to be bombarded with questions.
"How are you?" asked Nino.
"Are you really mated to Damian Wayne?" shouted Rose.
Mari was quickly surrounded by the three Alphas in the class. They let out a growl to anyone that got close, making their classmates step back.
"Are you okay?" Adrien questioned, quickly looking behind to her and then back to the class.
Marinette simply nodded.
"What is wrong with all of you?" Alya shouted.
Mari waved to the class and smiled, "I'm pupped. Alphas tend to get extremely protective towards Omegas, when that happens."
"But we're only talking with you." murmured Mylene.
"Still, it's tradition." the mated Omegas declared, "I'm only here to pick up my transcripts. I'll be moving in with my Alpha and his family. He's been preparing everything at his home for us."
"Can't believe you got pupped so fast." snickered Alix, making Marinette blush.
"How do you even know you are pupped?" questioned Lila.
Adrien growled in Lila's face, making her step back, "Alphas can tell when their mates are pupped, instantly. After a week, any other Alpha is able to tell, but a true Omega would know that."
Lila whimpered, baring her neck to him.
"Scurry along, Beta." Adrien declared, "We want nothing from you."
Lila picked up her things and moved to the back of the class. Adrien had only confirmed what they had all been thinking.
"Was Lila claiming to be an Omega?" whispered Mari.
"Yeah." answered Kim, "She was telling everyone how she didn't go to the ball because she was meeting her Alpha, but her supposed Alpha was at the ball and we called her out on her bullshit."
Marinette giggled in response.
"Why don't I walk you to the office." Adrien offered.
"You don't-" she began.
"We'll keep the halls clear." Kim declared.
Marinette smiled and began to walk out the room. The three Alpha's were quick to follow. Damocles was shocked to see them all in his office, but once she explained what was happening, he was quick to give her the transcripts, no problem.
Damian awaited his mate outside the school, only to see her surrounded by other Alphas. He growled, letting them know he wasn't happy with them so close to what was his.
"Damian, it's okay." Mari spoke, "These are my friends."
He looked at them with uncertainty.
"This is Kim." she stated, pointing to the larger male with blonde tipped hair.
Kim bowed and spoke, "My Omega is named Odine."
"This is Alix." she continued, showcasing the tiny female by her side.
"Yo. I have yet to find my mate." Alix saluted.
"Lastly, this is Adrien." Mari declared.
Adrien waves, "I have yet to find my Omega, but Marinette has always been a good friend to me."
Damian looked to his mate for answers.
"They protected me in school. They made sure no one got close and they even kept the halls clear while I got my transcripts." Marinette explained.
Damian nodded his head in appreciation toward the other alphas, "If I can help in any way, please inform me. Thank you for taking care of my mate."
Alix and Kim nodded.
Adrien thought of an idea, "If you can find me an Omega, like Mari, that would be great."
Marinette blushed at her friend's response.
Damian smirked, "I have just the Omega in mind."
The trio's jaws dropped.
"You do?" asked the Agreste heir, "Who?"
"He's a close friend of mine. He was sick so he wasn't able to come to the ball. I'll see to it that Marinette gives you his information."
Adrien just blushed in response.
"Let's go, Angel. We must start packing." Damian spoke, slipping his arm around her waist.
Marinette nodded and then waved to them, "I'd like to see you at our ceremony so long as your not busy with your omegas or chosen."
The alphas smiled and waved as Damian took her away.
"Alright, come one." groaned Alix, "We gotta wrangle the class in order now that the teacher lost her top Mama."
"True." answered Adrien, as the trio turned back to the school.
"Soooooo, Adrien," Kim teased, "You gonna meet that friendly omega he told you about?"
"Yeah." the Agreste heir smiled, "I think I will. Hopefully, before their ceremony" making the other two laugh.

Miraculous Ghosts
Danny and friends visit Paris and come across trouble, as well as the cities local superheroes.
Lately, Hawkmoth has been recycling villains. There are only so many people in Paris and not everyone gets emotionally vulnerable strongly enough or long enough to be akumatized. Those that do, and commonly like Mr. Pidgeon, usually had a certain fixation that was easy to exploit. The thing was, both Marienette and Chat Noir already knew their weakness, the items that would most likely get akumatized, the whole schtick. So the battles were really fast and easy.
A new face always had to be met with caution, the lack of knowledge regarding the person was dangerous and if the pair wasn’t careful, they could end up losing the battle. And their Miraculous.
With the start of summer came tourist season, and tourists could be victims of akumatization. Which seemed to be the case within the first week. 3 villains, all new faces, but the pair had gotten lucky with the similar powers that the heroes had faced before and the three were all defeated in a timely manner.
There was a short week of nothing happening.
And then all hell broke loose.
—————————————————————
Marienette knew the start of the tourist season had begun just based on the filled streets of strange faces, sunglasses, cameras, and the use of foreign languages. This also was noticed based on how busy her parents' shop had become, and how rarely she was managing to escape outside to enjoy some of summer's freedom. The good thing was she was able to brush up on some of her English, since the tourists usually spoke the common American language and the experience was always welcome to help boost her grades in the upcoming year. Even if it was a few months away.
She’d figured out the best way to sneak off during any attacks was to ‘use the bathroom’ or ‘accidently’ make a mess and excuse herself to clean up. It had worked during the first week and she didn’t have to do anything the past week since Hawkmoth seemed to take a break. She finished serving a young pair of Americans, a tall girl with orange hair, and a lanky boy nearly the same height with raven black hair.
She had to admit, some Americans had a certain charm, but the bustle of the kitchen quickly caught her attention as she was back to serving the next person in line.
Just as Chloe waltzed in, basically knocking the american boy over as she strutted to the front of the line, causing people to cast glares in her direction. The boy hissed when he fell, the American girl offering to help him up in English as he shook his head and stood up, dusting himself off as Marienette went to deal with the walking form of pure rich privilege. “Urg, Dupain-Cheng’s dingy little cafe? Of course she works here, it just smells like burnt bread.” She huffed.
Marienette bristled, but put on her customer service smile, noticing the poor Americans victim to Chloe leaving the shop. She was hoping to offer them a replacement after dealing with Chloe but it was a little late now. “Ma’am, unless you are here to pick up an order, you will have to wait in line like everyone else.” She strained.
“Ma’am? I am Chloe Dubois! I don’t need to wait in line like some sort of peasant! Just give me whatever you didn’t make.”
Marienette had to swallow down any returning insults and put down one of their most expensive items, handing it over with a clearly strained smile, “have a nice day.”
Chloe huffed with her baked goods in hand but left as soon as she appeared, allowing Marienette some relief. Very little damage. A little annoyance but nothing worthy of an akuma-.
An explosion was heard from outside, and Marienette groaned internally.
She just had to jinx it.
—————————————————————
Ladybug dove off to the side as the villain shot out a ray of white, plasma-like energy. Adrien, fighting as Chat Noir, and his partner were having a hell of a time with this dude. He spotted the chaos on the news, the villain calling himself ‘Black Hole’ and giving his poor Lady a hard time. When he finally arrived on the scene, he wasn’t able to do much either.
The villain was basically a godly powerhouse, floating in the air, shooting burning rays of heated plasma, or even ice! Ice and plasma! Sometimes he MIXED the two beams to create an even WORSE beam! Whenever either of the heroes got close enough to land a hit, their punches and kicks would go right through him. Then he would DISAPPEAR. REAPPEARING AND LANDING ANOTHER HEAVY BLOW. He would fly around like gravity was non-existent, and these abilities didn’t stop there. Every so often, he would yank out this thermos looking thing and shoot out these wormholes. Or… possibly black holes. Calling them black holes felt wrong though… since they glowed green and swirled before disappearing after a few moments.
The villain's outfit was a change of pace too. It was impossible to figure out his age since he was completely covered in a thick fabric material that reminded him of space suits. Yet looked a lot less bulky than actual space suits, thin yet sturdy metal covered his forearms, and formed a backpack that was attached by a wide metal collar that spread to his collarbone and slightly covered his shoulders, as well as a metal strap that wrapped around right under his chest. A plated, metal belt circled his waist with a clip for the green black hole thermos, and thigh high boots with a similar fabric to his suit covered most of his legs, thick plastic looking platform soles attached at the feet. Black bands wrapped around the ankles of the boots. A helmet covered his entire face, a metal frame covering the bottom half like a muzzle while the top was a tinted glass dome following the shape of his head, the inside of it entirely black except for the eerie glow of a single, left eye. The helmet had a tube on the back of the helmet that connected to his backpack, but neither he or Ladybug could figure out if it was essential or for decoration. His entire colouring was monotone, much bleaker than their previous villains. His suit was black, the boots, forearm cuffs, belt, backpack and collar were all a middle shade of grey, the only flash of colour being the glow of the single toxic green eye amongst the darkness of the helmet.
The dude was disturbing. He didn’t make any sound, in fact he seemed to ABSORB the sound around him. Like they were in space.
Paris was getting destroyed more and more by the second and the two didn’t know what to do. The Lady’s lucky charm turned into a thermos, which she didn’t have a clue how to use in the situation in front of them. Maybe it was a hint? A clue about soup? Or getting the villains thermos?
The problem with the last idea was that neither he or Ladybug could TOUCH this villain. And each of them were getting worse and worse for wear by the second. He could tell Ladybug was getting ready to get some sort of help, but who could make something untouchable… touchable? Chat even tried to use cataclysm on the villain's thermos while Ladybug had distracted him, but he twisted at the last moments and grabbed Chat's hand, draining cataclysm before he tossed him aside like it was nothing.
Another blast of plasma sent the two tumbling away from each other, and then a blast of ice caught Chat off guard. Cold shot up his arm as his muscles convulsed, a scream caught in his throat as the ice trapped his arm in such a tight and sturdy prison. He twisted to try and use his free arm to claw the other out of the ice, a shadow in the corner of his vision causing him to twist and jolt in surprise as the villain stood right in front of him. The glowing green eye was cold as it bore into him, and the villain grew closer and closer, drifting off the ground and absorbing every noise around him, the air around them dropping to freezing temperatures. Chats breath formed in front of him as gasps, panic clear in the quick breaths, fear intensifying as the only thing he could hear was his own heartbeat and blood roaring through his veins.
The villain's hand shot out and grabbed his free one- the one with his miraculous.
Chat heard Ladybug cry out as the villain gripped onto the ring, a quick glance showing she too was trapped.
That she was next.
Chat tried to keep his fingers curled, but he was battered and weak, and the villain hadn’t even broken a sweat during their fight. Prying open his fingers was easy, the ring vulnerable. This was it. He used cataclysm too soon and now he was powerless. He couldn’t escape. He couldn’t save anyone. He was a failure. This was the end of Paris.
They lost.
—————————————————————
Fucking. Vlad.
This entire trip had Danny on edge and it was all because of Vlad.
At first, he thought maybe, for once, Vlad wasn’t being a piece of shit when offering the family a fully paid trip to France for two weeks. He was suspicious. He probably just wanted the family out of town to do some shady shit. But a two week trip to France wasn’t the WORST thing a man could do. Especially in comparison to kidnapping and cloning.
But then his parents got sick. A common flu. Right before the trip. And they wanted Jazz and him to experience Paris. Then Vlad offered to be a chaperone.
It was all a play to get Danny alone for two weeks and try and manipulate him.
He did manage to get Tucker and Sam to tag along, something about friends being his family and the two unused tickets his parents left behind. But Vlad knew how to separate the group. How to corner Danny at the worst moments and whisper annoying remarks in his ear as he tried to get away.
He survived a week. He only had one more week to go. Tucker and Sam were off checking out some places for lunch while Jazz and Danny went to pick up sweets for everyone to share after their meal.
Vlad was off doing who knew what so Danny had put him to the back of his mind.
The cafe they found was… well it smelled incredible. There were so many baked goods on display and the air was filled with the warm and sweet smell of the goodies. He let Jazz do most of the talking, she wanted to practice her French and Danny had recently discovered that being dubbed the ghost king meant that now he had a natural grasp on all verbal languages, including the dead ones. This meant his speech in French was almost flawless, and his understanding was like he was listening to someone speak English. He couldn’t read other languages though, just speak them. He was told though by a few locals he had an odd accent. It wasn’t an american one, just… odd.
So Jazz ordered the treats and the pair was headed out to meet Danny’s friends.
Then some blonde girl with way too much make-up basically knocked him to the ground, not even sending him a glance that indicated she knew what she did. It was annoying, but he dealt with bullies on a daily basis back at Amity Park. Well… used to. But he knew better than to waste any thought on some jerk like her. He sadly looked at the ruined cat paw shaped cookies, the icing ruined and the cookies crushed under his weight when he fell.
Standing up with the help of Jazz, they left the shop as Danny insisted on finding somewhere to wash off the icing stuck to his shirt. He liked this shirt too… he hoped it wouldn’t stain too badly. It was better than ectoplasm at least, that stuff needed to be burned out, there was no such thing as washing out ectoplasm.
Jazz asked to help, but Danny brushed her off, telling her he could easily clean himself off by himself.
And then Vlad chose that moment to corner him.
—————————————————————
“Hello Daniel.”
Danny splashed water wildly as he spun around to glare at the older Halfa, hissing out an ‘Ancients!’ in surprise. “What the hell, Vlad?” He spat, “sneaking up on a kid in the bathroom? I should just call the police and tell them about all that stalking you like to do.”
“Aren’t you tired of this childish game?” He hummed.
“Not really, seeing as I’m a child and I love games,” Danny sneered.
“I’m older, more experienced, and stronger. I am also patient, little badger. And it’s easy to wear you down. By the end of this trip, you are going to be begging to be my-.”
“Son? Pet? Little slave that does everything you ask? Sorry, Vladdy, but I ain’t the type to listen to crazy fruit loops. How about you go enjoy the company of your French rich friends like that Agreste dude instead of stalking me and trying to get with my mom and kill my dad. Might do you some good to make more friends than just your cat.”
“Oh Daniel, you throw your petty insults but I know ways to break you even further. You know, a lot of accidents happen in Paris. Terrible things.”
Danny felt his eyes flash as he spun on his heel, “listen to me, if you even consider-!”
“Not to mention your brand new ghostly responsibilities as… the ghost king? Imagine that. A child as the king. You don’t even know everything about ghosts.”
“Neither do you!” Danny spat.
“Oh but I know so much more. And I could easily teach you-.”
“Just shut up!”
“When you mess up, when the ghost zone begins to fall apart, you will wish you took my offer, but I may not be as forgiving when that happens.”
“I said shut up!”
“And we both know the moment the ghost zone falls apart, so will this world. All because a boy became king and didn’t take help he was so graciously offered.”
“SHUT THE HELL UP!”
Something inside him shifted, and Danny suddenly felt his mind cloud, a deep voice echoed his mind.
“A cruel man harassing a young teen that wants nothing to do with him. A shame when someone can’t take a hint.
Black Hole. I am Hawkmoth. I can give you the power to show this old man that he never should consider looking in your direction ever again.
All I ask is for Ladybug and Chat Noir’s miraculous. Do this for me, and Vlad Masters will never be an issue for you ever again.”
Danny’s clouded mind and building rage smirked at the offer, his voice echoing as he glanced up at Vlad who was giving him a confused look. “Yes, Hawkmoth.”
Darkness engulfed him and then his memory began to fail him.
—————————————————————
A boomerang slammed into Black Hole’s head, causing it to jerk to the side and a small crack formed on the glass that was hit. The metal boomerang dropped to the ground and Black Hole slowly looked down at it as a robotic voice cried out from it, “ghost detected!” And then a recorded voice spouted out, “take that, spook!”
Black Hole’s head slightly tilted at the noise it made, a hand subconsciously rubbing the crack it left behind. Then he twisted his gaze back to Chat Noir, going back to taking the hero’s miraculous.
Then a shout came from behind Black Hole and Chat caught the eyes of a teenage girl yelling and holding a bat over her head. Black Hole twisted, his body turning that transparent look whenever Chat or Ladybug had tried to hit him before, and Chat knew that it was useless. “No! Stop! Get out of here-!” He screamed at the citizen, but stopped when the bat connected with the villain's head and sent him flying into a wall.
Chat was at a loss for words for once in his life, watching the villain slowly pry himself from the wall from being hit by a baseball bat when he and Lady couldn’t land a single hit. He looked back at the citizen and shrieked as she raised the bat above her head and swung down at him, flinching and squeezing his eyes shut. She hit something, causing it to shatter and then- his hand was free!
He opened his eyes and looked at his hand in awe and then back at the girl, “who the heck are you?”
She huffed, dropping the bat casually on her shoulder, “Sam Manson. Friend of the idiot that didn’t do his research before taking a trip here. I’m surprised this didn’t happen earlier.”
Chat blinked, “you- you know that’s your friend? And knew this would happen?”
Sam shrugged, “the booo-merang is never wrong. And yeah, my friend there is not exactly the most emotionally stable person on the planet. Sorry it took us a while to get here. You guys really do move fast.”
Chat just opened and closed his mouth a few times, then yelled as she suddenly swung the bat again and smacked the villain in the gut as he got close during their exchange, knocking him sideways but not down like the first time. Black Hole turned again, making a snarling sound before he was blasted by some sort of green ray and sent flying sideways, rolling along the pavement before smashing into a car. Another teen jogged over with Ladybug behind him, dropping his hands to his knees as he wheezed, “I have ran… way too much for this to be considered a vacation.”
“M’Lady-, what is going on?” Chat asked.
“This is Tucker, and his friend Sam, and they know how to help,” Ladybug quickly explained, glancing back at Black Hole. “We need to draw his attention and get that thermos off of him, then Sam and Tucker can use this,” she held up the thermos from her lucky charm, “and we can get his akuma.”
“Akuma is in the thermos, knock it off,” Chat summarized. He heard his miraculous beeping, a sign he was close to his limit.
“Let’s end this fast.”
—————————————————————
Ladybug held the booo-merang in one hand as the two teens and Chat drew Black Hole’s attention, the teens equipped with weapons that seemed to get past some of Black Holes abilities.
She narrowed her gaze, waiting for the perfect moment, then threw the weapon, watching it arch in the air then knock the thermos off of the villain's waist. The thermos clattered to the ground and drew his attention, he quickly twisted and dove to try and retrieve it, which was when a bright beam erupted from the polka dot thermos Ladybug had given the teens. The beam caught the villain's legs and he was tugged back, his form pulling towards it like taffy as he twisted and a horrid scream of anger burst from him. He tried to escape it, flailing and reaching for anything to hang on to, but in a matter of seconds he was pulled into the canister and Sam slammed the lid shut. The screaming stopped and Ladybug made her way over to Black Hole’s thermos, stomping on it and crushing it, releasing the Akuma hidden inside. With a flick of her wrist her lucky charm turned back into its original form, dumping Black Hole onto the street, then the butterfly was caught and purified, and another click of her miraculous, she let the little bug flutter away harmlessly. With a shout, ‘Miraculous Ladybug!’, everything around them was engulfed in black and red as the damages were undone around them.
At last, the villain's form was released of Hawkmoth's influence and it left a lanky teen laying on the street. He slowly sat up with a groan and a hand to his head and she then realized it was the same teen as from the shop. So once again, this was Chloe’s fault. She turned her attention to the two teens that helped her, noticing Chat let out a hasty farewell and thanks and disappeared around a corner. “Thank you, both of you. Without your help… well, without your help we may have lost that battle. But how in the world did you do that?”
“What the fuck just happened?” The teen groaned, “I feel like the booo-merang smacked me in the head like… fifty times.”
“That’s because I may have smacked you a few times with the fenton creep stick,” Sam shrugged as she helped her friend up who gave her wide eyes in return.
“You fucking what?”
Tucker took a step forward to answer Ladybug’s question, “let's just say back in our town, we have very specific supervillains that have abilities that make it hard for regular attacks to land. So we have specialized gear. Sam and I did a bit of research before heading here and figured if any of us got Akumatized, we may reflect some of those traits.”
“I… see…” Ladybug hummed, “and where did you say you were all from?” The three cast a few glances between each other, but before any of them could answer, her miraculous beeped angrily as she quickly realized she was out of time. “Thank you again for your help, if we could meet again to exchange some of that tech to make sure this never happens again-,” she quickly tried to set up a meet up before Sam held up a hand.
“This won’t happen again. A lot of what happened here is very unique to Amity, so once we finish our vacation, you won’t see this kind of thing ever again.”
Ladybug only had more questions but the angry beeping only forced her to nod and bid a quick farewell before getting out of sight to let Tiki take a rest. Marienette held out a few macaroons for Tiki as her thoughts swirled in her head. The questions about the odd American trio and how they knew how to deal with a villain as unique as Black Hole.
She may be able to corner them later. They did say they had to ‘finish their vacation.’
And in the meantime, it was time to do some research on this place called ‘Amity’.
—————————————————————
Danny didn’t remember a lot of what happened while he was the villain, Black Hole. It was like a dream, he kinda remembered the feeling, vague details, but nothing specific.
What he wished he remembered was whatever he did to Vlad. He must have done something because his memories cut out right after Vlad harassed him in the bathroom and after the event, the froot loop avoided him during the entire trip. Even refused to make eye contact!
What he would give just for a few seconds of that memory! Or for someone to have recorded it!
For now though he got to reap the rewards, flashing his eyes green when Vlad would glance over and causing the man to flinch. Oh man, he was going to abuse this newfound intimidation ability till the bitter end.

one step back, two steps forward (pt.4)
masterlist
Not all heroes wear capes
Kaylan stood tall on the roof of the building. The spotted heroin was having trouble keeping herself safe.
For the love of God please work!
Closing her eye she took a deep breath. When she opened her eyes, her yellow green eyes glowed and she swung her rope lasso and threw it towards ladybug. The loop secured at ladybug’s waist that made the said hero startle. With a strong tug Kaylan pulled the hero upward before she started falling down right in her arms. (here)
**************************************************************************************
Her mind was exploding with worst case scenarios like a bullet train. The feeling of rope and the strong pull made her believe that she was going to be out of commotion just like that. But the moment she landed in someone’s arms, she was startled to see her savior.
For as long as Marinette can remember, she never got fascinated by some glowing eyes. And she never voiced that. Not once in the future.
*******************************************************************************************
The beeping from the earrings startled them both. Ladybug looked around.
Thank you for your help but I need to recharge.
Ladybug kept looking for any place to hide. With a wave Kaylan made a blue colored cube. The shocked face didn’t go unnoticed by her but she ignored it.
It’s my magic. I made sure no one can’t either see or hear you.
Huh?
The spotted heroin who looked baffled at the sudden reveal couldn’t process what was actually happening. Rolling her eyes Kaylan pushed the other girl to the cube.
 Tsk! get inside.
Once she was safe inside, Kaylan turned to observe the situation. From what she gathered from Marinette’s general information and her own research she just needed to find the thing that has the magical butterfly in it.
While the whole situation looked abstruse, she knew as a magic user herself, it was possible to defy logic rather easily and the living proof was rather in front of her.
Since I saw many victim with the mind control ability the minions are nothing but an obstacle. Considering that they can turn the other like themselves it would be best if they could be separated from the main boss.
 Miss?
With the speed of lightening, the knife was at speaker’s neck. Ladybug looked frightened for a moment but it was gone. With a sigh she put the knife away.
I believe that you are Ladybug.
And you are new in Paris.
And how do you know that?
Considering I know almost everyone in the city and I don’t think that there would be someone with such abilities here. It kind of give away.
Kaylan looked away from the heroin and looked at the crowd that gathered at the base of the building trying to climb up.
 Your partner is incompetent.
 *sigh* I know.
I have a few plans that can help you but it involved me in a dangerous situation.
A surprise gasp left her lips as ladybug looked at the other girl astonished.
I can’t put the life of a civilian in danger.
 Well too late for now.
 Huh?
Looking at what she was pointing at, ladybug felt a little nauseous. There wasn’t a single civilian in sight that was not affected by the akuma.
Give me a few sample plans and I will tell you your role.
The words forced themselves out of her mouth but she didn’t seem to care. There was a hint of frustration and helplessness hidden by the sheer determination in her eyes. A smirk made its way towards her face making the spotted heroin regret her words by a long shot.
Sure!
*******************************************************************************************
This is so nauseating. Do they eat brain? Do you think they die if we crush their heads?
A high pitched excited voice pierce through the crowd and every minion looked at the general direction. The shadow of two people behind a wall could be seen.
Would you shut up? Your glass shattering voice is making me deaf.
 Excuse me?!
Geez you’re scaring the akuma with that voice. I think they are bleeding from their ears. Screechy voice!
My voice is not screechy! Everyone knows it. Just because they are weak and pathetic and can’t bear a little loud voice doesn’t mean I’m the one to blame. God forbade, that akuma just couldn’t get any other ability from Hawkmoth……….like seriously! Zombies! So third class! And there are so many akumas that had minions. Like no originality! Don’t they have copyrights!
A tick mark appeared on the akuma’s head.
Get them whoever they are swarm them and break them apart. How dare they say that I’m weak? I’m the strongest akuma yet. Get them! Get them! Get them!
In no time the minions ran towards the two people leaving the main akuma all alone.
I can’t believe her plan actually worked.
The spotted heroin called from behind before dodging the beam and knocking the weapon from plague doctor’s hand and tying her from her other yoyo. The main yoyo broke the akuma item and captured and purify the butterfly.
 Bye bye little butterfly.
After a miraculous ladybug, the spotted heroin comforted the victim. Kaylan jogged towards the pair and extended a card towards the victim.
My mother is a psychiatrist. You can schedule a time with her and go for a therapy. I’m sure it will do well if you don’t have to bottle up all emotions.
The nurse gave a strained smile and left promising that she will schedule the session so something like this never happens.
 Milady!
The sing song voice of the leather clad hero made the other one flinch. Chat noir came smiling like a Cheshire cat.
Chat noir! One again you came late and got hit instead of listening to my plan. You need to take this seriously!
But I always take you seriously.
Ladybug felt like giving a hard slap to his face. He didn’t listen to a single word she said and just spoke of his fantasy. It was nice listen to these when he was a good hero. It helps when the stress got into her but now it is just plain irritating.
Chat noir you need to be a serious hero!
I am a good hero! I always save you like a knight in shiny leather.
 Th-that’s not what I mean!
The one sided argument was enough to bring a headache. With a big sigh she pushed chat noir away from ladybug making him tumble down on the ground. It was lucky that there weren’t people around yet but the time was limited.
Ladybug you should leave. You need rest anyway.
Ladybug sighed in relief and left quickly. Kaylan turned to the cat themed hero with a fierce glare making the said hero flinch. Grabbing him by the collar, she pulled him up to her level.
I’ll say it just once, you better stop making her do all the work you dumb, lazy cat or so god help me I’ll be the one you will have to worry about.
You can’t say anything to me. You’re just a new girl who came here yesterday. Ladybug and I are destined to be together.
Chat noir yelled while struggling to get away from her. For a girl she was strong, far stronger than he is and he was the one with the miraculous, he should have more strength than a normal girl.
If you think that you can get out, well you thought wrong.
She shook him violently before shoving him to the wall, rather violently.
I hate people who think they are heroes and deserve the best. You are one of those heroes. Acting all high and mighty and calling himself a hero while you do nothing to live up to that claim and ladybug had to do all the work.
  You……… how dare you………….
The anger didn’t last a second when Kaylan slammed a knife right next to his cheek. Now it was sticking right there on the wall.
How dare I? How. Dare. You? You think that the world revolves around you and they owe you a favor. Or worse. Ladybug owe you something. I might be new to all this but I can assure you a single piece of magical artifact can’t decide your destiny. So ladybug don’t owe you her love. GET. THAT. THROUGH. YOUR. THICK. SKULL.
Chat noir didn’t move a bit. He had been scolded before but as Adrien not as chat noir. And this girl, she not only dare to scold him but she is also disrupting the peace of his class. She even sits next to Marinette.
 Marinette.
This girl is dangerous, he need to warn Marinette or Marinette will be trouble.
During his inner turmoil, he didn’t notice her taking out her knife or leaving. When he did came to his senses she was turning a corner. He wanted to follow her but his miraculous started beeping.
“Guess I’ll have to warn Marinette tomorrow.”
***************************************************************************************
Stepping down to the stairs after classes was dismissed, Kaylan found herself being hugged by her mother. She was asking question at a rapid speed. Some relevant and some irrelevant. Well not like it mattered. Her mother was safe anyway.
In a distance she saw Marinette looking at her. When their eyes met, she send her an apologetic smile before waving her and leaving towards the bakery.
Guess I’ll be asking her tomorrow.
Life was great. Even with hilariously dangerous situation.

(Fiction fact:
Kaylan has magic.
she can make solid structure.
she didn’t said any type of incantation like Zatanna or Constantine. it makes her a different type of mage or maybe a superior one.
Kaylan do not use magic much, instead she uses her knife, especially for threatening. ladybug was an exception.
the two shadows were illusion that she made and manipulated the emotions of the akuma to separate the minions and the main akuma.
Ladybug is the only one that can be seen in the head to head fight.
lucky charm of this akuma was yoyo)

Take Two: The Guardian in Gotham Chapter 8
First   Previous   Next: Nonexistent   Ao3
Ladybug dove through the portal and landed smack-dab in the middle of a massacre. Civilians lay dying in the middle of the streets and the heavy smell of iron lingered in the air. Their muted sounds of pain swirled around her as she swung through the streets towards her teammates’ trackers. Landing on a rooftop, she found herself watching as Ryuko fought the sword-themed Akuma in front of the Louvre, heart in her throat. The bright red of her costume caught the akuma’s eye, and they immediately paused and called up to her. “Ladybug! I was wondering when you would show up!” Quick as a flash, they turned and disarmed the Dragon-themed heroine, holding their sword to her neck before any of the team could even blink. Queen Bee went absolutely still, and Chat Noir and Viperion were tense with fear and rage.
Feeling the familiar panic well up inside her, Ladybug took a steadying breath, mind racing with half-formed ideas. Through it all, a steady stream of ‘I messed up again. I’m not good enough. Why am I such a failure? Whywhywhywhywhy’ rolled through her mind on an endless loop. “Alright, Chat, I need you to cause a distraction while Queenie venoms the Akuma from behind. Viperon I need you on standby.” She spoke quickly, not giving herself room to hesitate.
Nodding at her team, she gave the signal and they split up. Chat jumped down in front of the Akuma, tossing them an easy-going grin. “Hey there! Looks like you’re having a gory-ous time!” Rolling her eyes at his puns, she watched with bated breath as Queen Bee crept around, stinger pulsing with magic and poised to attack. She raised her arm, ready to hit them in the back, when everything went to shit.
She saw as Chat Noir’s ears perked up, and he looked towards the sky, eyes wide in panic. He opened his mouth to shout something, but whatever he said was cut off with a loud whoosh. In a blur of color, Superman swooped down from the sky, followed by Batman and Wonder Woman. Landing in front of the Akuma he shouted to Chloé: “Hey Bee girl! Get out of the way!” At his shout, the Akuma whirled to face Chloé, letting go of Ryuko and slashing at her abdomen with their sword.
It cut her straight down the chest, and she collapsed to her knees, hands pressing to the wound, and letting out a weak wheeze as blood began to fill her lungs. Ryuko sprinted to her fallen form and kneeled at her side, grasping one blood soaked hand between hers. She whispered something quietly to the blond-haired girl before standing and turning her furious eyes on a horrified Superman. Chat and Viperion roared in anger from where they had seen it happen, the latter going to reset his bracelet. “Not again!” He turned to the other two, dread painted across his face. “That was my last Second Chance.” He whispered hoarsely. “This is it, we can’t go back anymore.”
“How can we help?” Wonder Woman called, an apology in her tone. “Just stay out of it!” Chat snapped, glowering at Batman, who simply glared back. “You’ve done enough.” Ladybug agreed firmly. “We’ll talk after the fight.” With a yell, the four of them leaped back into the fray. Sensing their approach, they turned, bringing one fist up to punch Chat hard across the face. He flew back several feet before crashing into a wall. Spitting out blood, he stood and bared his red stained teeth in a snarl before whacking them across the stomach with his baton.
The Akuma barely even winced, opting to bring their other hand down, sword poised to cut him in half. In a flash of silver, Ryuko was there, rapier raised to block the blow. Ladybug threw her yoyo, the cable wrapping tightly around the Akuma’s scimitar, and yanked. Arms trembling from the strain, she pulled their arm back, giving Chat and Ryuko the space to dart away. What she didn’t count on was the akuma using their sword to drag her toward them.
Summoning a dagger, they loomed over her as she frantically struggled to untangle her yoyo. She heard the hiss as it sliced through the air, and closed her eyes, still tugging fruitlessly at the tangled cable. There was a wet thunk as it collided with something, which was accompanied by a pained grunt. Looking up, she saw Viperion clutching his thigh, the blue of his suit darkening as blood gushed out of the wound. He tried to step towards her, and collapsed as his leg buckled from the strain.
Gritting her teeth, she glared up at the three superheroes watching from above. They decided to show up now?! And what does that do? Get three of her teammates injured, two of which were now incapitated. Or they could be dead. Her mind whispered. Shut up. She thought back, pushing the image out of her mind. She inhaled sharply and turned her attention back to the fight. Across the courtyard, the Akuma (she was naming it Stabby) had managed to catch Ryuko between the ribs, and she staggered back, hand automatically pressing to her side. Chat Noir was lying on the floor (when did that happen?), struggling to his feet as he wobbled unsteadily. “Ryuko!” She screamed, running for the heroine. As she set her gently against a pillar, the girl in question brought her mouth to her ear and whispered a weak: “Finish this.” Resting her head against the stone, the Dragon themed heroine coughed weakly, blood spilling from her lips. One hand gripped hers tightly, squeezing once before letting go. Ladybug stood, her chest tight from the force of holding back her tears. “Chat, let's regroup!” She called, before swinging up to another rooftop. He landed next to her with a soft thump, standing tall at her side. “The two of us again, M’Lady?” He asked, his breath unsteady and rattling as he exhaled. “Just like the good old days, Chat.” She responded, feeling her lips quirk up at the familiarity of their banter. “Lucky Charm!”
As the small animal statuettes fell into her open palm, she felt an absurd idea pop into her head. “Kitty, I’m going to grab Wayzz and Trixx. You hold down the fort!” Calling on Kaalki, she quickly stepped through the glowing blue portal into her room back at Wayne Manor. Opening the Miracle Box, she grabbed the bracelet and pendant, storing them in her yoyo. Her hand hesitated over the Mouse miraculous, debating on whether or not she should take it. Trust your instincts. She recalled Master Fu telling her one day as they sat together in his massage parlor. Nodding resolutely, she grabbed the necklace and pulled it over her head, before transforming. She swayed lightly from the strain of holding three transformations and then leaped back through the still-open portal. Stepping back into Paris, she dropped the Horse and Ladybug transformation, staying as Multimouse. Turning to Chat, she whispered quietly to him. “I’m going to split and use Tikki, Wayzz, and Trixx, to cast an illusion and trap Stabby, okay? Then I need you to destroy the Akumatized object.” He nodded once, jaw clenched.
Exchanging the glasses for the two other miraculi, she split herself into three. One of her clones clasped the green bracelet over their wrist, as another slid the fox pendant over their head. Her original self held the earrings, and upon securing their miraculi they all transformed. She gasped softly at the sudden flash of pain that spread through her body. Hearing the quiet noise, Chat Noir turned to her, eyes narrowed. “Bug, are you sure you’re okay?” Straightening her spine, the Turtle Marinette faced him with an easy grin on her face. “Of course I’m fine Chaton! Let's just get this over with!” He frowned reluctantly, still looking her over with some suspicion in his gaze. Pushing past the pain, she willed herself to stay strong as he scrutinized her. After he nodded, they immediately enacted her plan. Thankfully, Stabby fell for the illusion she had created of her and Chat hiding in an alleyway and talking, so it was easy for her to trap him and Chat in a Shell-ter. After the akumatized object (His sword, what a surprise! She thought to herself bitterly as she watched it disintegrate.) was destroyed, she quickly captured the glowing butterfly and set it free, summoning her Lucky Charm and throwing it up again with a cry of “Miraculous Ladybug!” As the glowing pink butterflies rushed through the city, healing injuries and bringing back the dead, she felt the familiar pull on her life force at the cost of saving all these people. Squaring her shoulders, she pushed past the burn of using three Miraculi and ignored the drain of the Cure. She could take the pain. She had to.
She dropped all her transformations, leaving her in her signature Ladybug suit once more. Leaning against Chat Noir, she saw the wide eyes of the foreign superheroes as they took in the magic. “Hey.” She called to Viperion as he landed beside her. Jerking a thumb towards the three heros, she lowered her voice and asked “Think you can take care of them for a second?” At his affirming nod, she let out a relieved sigh and went to hug Ryuko and Queen Bee, who were standing to the side, holding each other tightly with their foreheads pressed together. When they heard her footsteps they stepped apart and opened their arms for her to fall into their embrace. She clutched them desperately for a long second, before letting go. “We have to deal with some outside company before we can detransform, I’m afraid.”
Looking past her, they saw the four figures of Viperion, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman as Luka negotiated with them. They landed on the rooftop beside him, Marinette and Adrien leaning on each other (her with a hand around his waist, his arm slung over her shoulders) as Chloe and Kagami stood shoulder to shoulder with their arms brushing. Ignoring the other two heroes, Marinette turned to Wonder Woman, who bowed respectfully to her. “Holder of Creation, it is an honor to meet you.” Smiling slightly, Marinette bowed in return. “Daughter of Hippotlaya. The honor is mine.” Surveying their trio, she arched a brow as they all remained silent. “Was there a reason for this unexpected visit?” This time, it was Superman who stepped forward. Batman just stood behind him and glowered. “Yes. We wanted to see what all the fuss about Paris was.” “And now you’ve seen it.” Chloé snapped, flicking her hair over her shoulder. “So you can go back to not caring about us, thank you very much.” Wonder Woman stepped forward, hands held placatingly. “We didn’t know anything was wrong with Paris. The satellites showed us nothing was amiss, so we never checked any further.”
“So what made you change your mind?” Luka asked, eyes narrowed in suspicion. At that, the three of them fell silent, seeming to have a silent conversation with each other. “We can’t tell you that,” Batman spoke, his voice a low, dark sound. “And why not?” Kagami challenged, arms folded across her chest defensively. “Because it could compromise my identity.” He growled, daring them to argue. “Okay back to the original topic,” Adrien interjected, “You said you were here to check on Paris, and now you did that. So unless there’s something else you want…”He trailed off, waiting for their response. “We want to help train you five as well. You’re already very powerful, we just want to help you hone your magic.” Wonder Woman answered. “We’ll think about it,” Marinette spoke, “But we definitely can’t train in Paris. Volatile emotions are easily taken advantage of.”
“Agreed.” Superman nodded, before the three of them took off. At their departure, Marinette felt her shoulders sag in relief. The five of them said quick goodbyes before heading home. She was about to transform using Kaalki when she saw a flash of back and silver out of the corner of her eye. Sliding her gaze to the side as she put on the glasses, she nearly groaned at what she saw. She would know that black outfit and stance anywhere. The League of Assassins had finally come to meet with the Order.

----
The cool metal of the railing grounded him to the space, reminding him of where he was as he struggled to remain present. Nino took a deep breath, the frigid air making him shiver slightly. The balcony on which he hid was abandoned for the most part, one couple huddled together many yards away as they finished discussing something private. Neither of these people took any notice of him, the woman’s presumably lovely but insufficient dress for the cold forcing the pair to hurry back inside. They had likely been hoping for privacy, but it seemed only Nino’s turmoil was sufficient enough cause to stay in the bitter cold, ruminating.
He attempted to straighten his spine, standing tall as his hands pulled weakly at his tie, trying to let him breathe. He shuddered again as a cold breeze bit through his suit jacket, reminding him of its expensive weight paired with expensive shoes paired with expensive bullshit on this lifeless marble balcony-
He closed his eyes, forcing that spiraling thought down and trying to relax, but he couldn’t stop himself from pulling at the tie.
It had been unbalanced for almost the entire event, Nino noticing too late that it was askew and silently panicking over how long it had been that way. It was a small infraction but… depending on who you asked,
So was he.
His urgent hands stilled as they gave up on the mess they had made, falling forward to grip the ice cold railing again.
This was his first big event.
He had expected it to be taxing, he’d been bracing himself for it all month but he knew how much it meant to Adrien to do this together. Adrien himself had sworn off big galas and publicity junkets like this almost entirely after he turned 18, but every once in a while he’d put in an appearance at some big soiree and do his thing, if only for Gabriel.
This was the first event Adrien had planned to attend since the two of them had made their relationship public to the press. He had been so excited to attend it as a couple.
Now Nino had essentially abandoned him to the wave of rich folks with their petty shallow conversations and was on the verge of some kind of panic alone behind the first unlocked door he had found.
It had hit him out of nowhere… he hadn’t expected to be comfortable, fancy events were never really his thing and he had always felt out of place in formal spaces. However the more nervous he became the more he felt he was messing up every interaction he had. Despite Adrien’s best efforts they were routinely separated, and every time they were apart Nino would flounder along the edges of the party, hoping no one would talk to him. He was a pretty sociable guy but there were just so many people he didn’t know how to talk to. And in the end he had nothing to say.
When someone who probably had a mutli-million dollar net worth pointed out his tie was messed up it had really seemed like she was just being nice, wanting to let him know to save him the embarrassment, but it had just been the final straw. Now he was totally unpresentable, having made the problem worse as he routinely did.
Nino slumped against the railing, letting his face fall in his hands as he tried his best to get a grip… the cold, emotionless marble all around him left him in peace, even if the sudden swell of party noise did not.
The glass door clicking shut sent a spike of nerves up his back and he quickly reached for his tie, resolved to just rip if off when he heard a chilling, familiar voice.
“I hope you realize that’s one of kind. If you just throw it over the edge, I won’t be replacing it.”
Nino paused, taking a long, calculated breath. He couldn’t help the wash of anger that crept up on him in this vulnerable moment, but he used the freezing air around him to push it down, turning to regard the man who had found him.
Gabriel Agreste did not seem to notice the cold, standing as firmly and distantly as Nino had always known him to be. He was wearing unusually dark colors, his tux looking more appropriate for mourning then it did for a large charity event, but perhaps that was just apart of his newest theme. The suits he had tailored made for himself and Adrien were similar, though thankfully not identical. He approached slowly, drinking methodically from a tall glass.
Nino took a moment to decide how he wanted to handle this, before deciding after a time to just slouch against the railing, allowing his irritation to show on his face.
“What do you need,” Nino muttered, unwilling to engage in the careful politeness they usually maintained. He couldn’t honestly say he had had a deliberately unpleasant experience with Gabriel in some time now, but at this moment… he just didn’t have the energy.
Gabriel didn’t answer, his professional eye glancing over him and sending another wash of anger through him, analyzing him like every other fucking person he had met tonight. It was a shock however when Gabriel stepped forward, coming towards him without another comment just yet, like he didn’t feel the need for one.
Nino tensed in confusion and discomfort as Gabriel set his glass down and abruptly reached for the mess he had made of his tie, ignoring the way Nino backed up against the railing to make as much distance as he could. All Nino managed at first was an uncomfortable huff, but Gabriel hadn’t asked permission and he didn’t ask for any to continue. The cold, emotionless man just started fixing it, ignoring Nino’s rampant confusion.
They were dead silent as Gabriel fixed his tie, the older man just resolving the issue without comment or explanation. By the time he was done the tie was affixed perfectly in its place, but it was clear the young man wearing it was extremely uncomfortable still.
They waited, Gabriel taking a step away and looking out over the railing, the distant view of Paris at night their only commentary for a while.
It was still. And it was cold.
And it was quiet.
Nino didn’t move for a while, eventually shifting uncomfortably until he was looking out over the vista as well, a good five or six feet between them now.
Nino’s mind was racing over what to do, before a subtle shift interrupted his panicked thinking. He looked over just as Gabriel turned slightly to regard him.
“My son is looking for you.”
“Hm,” Nino replied, looking away. He fidgeted slightly, and said nothing else.
“He’s making a bit of a scene, people are starting to notice.”
Nino couldn’t contain his irritation at that, shooting Gabriel a dark look as he said, “Am I expected to apologize for that?”
“I would have thought you might,” Gabriel said coldly, looking away from him and out over the city. He paused for a beat before his tone shifted. “You accuse me of managing his image,” his voice fell into a near accusation, “You seem far more concerned with it than I am.”
“What does that mean,” Nino hissed at him, finally straightening and facing him fully, but Gabriel seemed unperturbed. He just continued to admire the view.
“It means if you weren’t so obsessed with how your presence affected his reputation you wouldn’t have ran away.” Gabriel turned slowly, fixing him in place with one cold, ice blue eye. “Hypocritical of you, seeing as my son largely holds it against me for asserting that same thing once.”
Nino didn’t manage to retort right away, a hot, angry feeling restricting his chest as he stared him down. He knew his hands were shaking, but as he grappled with the pit of anxiety that clawed through years’ worth of protective anger, he couldn’t know for sure why.
“Don’t act like you know me, you don’t know shit about me.”
“I know about people. It’s my business,” Gabriel stated firmly, looking off into the distance again as if Nino was barely there. “I’ve built a lot around understanding fundamental weaknesses in character. And if you think a man whose built his company around insecurities can’t identify one at a glance then you’re a fool.”
“So you’re a cold blooded monster. I get the picture.”
Nino half expected an evil chuckle or something else cliché from him at this point, but he was surprised to see the man pause and reach for his glass. When he finally spoke… his tone was cold, and bitter.
“I would have thought my son had already told you as much.”
Silence lapsed suddenly, Gabriel’s passive sentiment hanging between them as Nino tried to unpack what that meant. However, there was too much there, the older man continuing to drink silently.
Nino didn’t have anything to say, unsure of what to make of the cards Gabriel was playing. Was he aiming for pity? Like Nino should somehow feel bad about the relationship he had with his son? That didn’t seem right…
One hand drifted to his fixed tie, wondering what any of this was for.
“Do you have a point here Gabe? Or are you just adding vague upsetting dialogue to my breakdown tonight?” Nino pushed the words out firmly, knowing he had to stand his ground with this guy. His casual nickname annoyed him about as much as he had hoped, Gabriel suddenly looking stiff, but not addressing it.
“My point,” he finally spoke, “is that you’re as transparent as you can be. You’re insecure, you’re out of place. You don’t belong here and it makes you seem weak, anyone in that room can tell that much just from looking at you.” Gabriel turned, his expression completely unreadable. “You don’t think you deserve to be here with him.”
Nino didn’t flinch, clenching his fists tighter as he swallowed down all the dark, twisted crap he was feeling. He refused to waver, even if he was sinking he wasn’t going to let that show.
“Well isn’t that just everything you ever wanted,” Nino spat at him harshly, “isn’t it nice to know you were right.”
To his surprise, Gabriel was quiet.
Nino stood there, steadfast. Even if he didn’t know what to do with all the shit in his head, this was a threat he knew how to handle. But despite what he expected, Gabriel didn’t fire back. He waited, and finished his drink, setting it down with a quiet clink of glass against marble.
Gabriel straightened, standing as tall and as unbeatable as he always had. And yet he didn’t look him in the eye.
“I realized too late that what I think doesn’t matter.”
When he finally met Nino’s gaze, what he saw was a young man who was completely unprepared for what he was hearing. He still saw all those insecurities, woven into him and impacting every single thing he said and did. He had spotted them the first time they had met, seen them below the surface every day since. Nino didn’t even attempt to deny it, but that wasn’t the point.
The point was that Gabriel understood what he thought didn’t matter anymore.
“You’re a hypocrite, and a fool,” Gabriel finally surmised plainly, “You openly accept the same things my son held against me.  What I think of you doesn’t matter, what my son thinks of you does. Is that not what he always insisted?”
Nino waited… his steadfast posture loosening in his uncertainty, because- this wasn’t going… how he thought it would.
“… I didn’t think you really understood that.”
“It appears I wasn’t the only one.”
Nino was dumbstruck, completely disarmed in less than a sentence. The frigid air between them kept them separated, like winter in Paris somehow understood there would always be this immeasurable gap between these two people. Somehow though they occupied the same space, revealing them both for a moment. And he didn’t understand what he saw.
A man who had lost a lot because of his own actions. Naively, perhaps, he had always assumed Gabriel was oblivious to that.
Gabriel Agreste began to step away, pacing around him and abandoning his glass to chill out on the marble railing alone. He was shoulder to shoulder with him when Nino finally spoke, grabbing his shoulder and forcing him to stop.
“Wait- wait. Gabriel wh-,” he hesitated, conflicted about this but knowing he was exposed no matter what he did. He saw right through him.
Nino looked away from him and said, “What if you were right? What if… what if I’m not good enough?”
Gabriel paused, turning his face slightly to regard something, before looking back towards Nino. “I believe my son would have a lot to say on the subject.”
Nino frowned, confused for only a moment before Gabriel excused himself without ceremony or further comment. He stepped away and left him there, and it was only when Nino turned to follow his movement that he saw the illuminated doorway occupied by a still, silent silhouette.
Nino felt his heart falter before it sank deep into the pit of his stomach, the freezing cold of the night occurring to him for the first time in a while. It was inescapable now, chilling him to the bone as he watched Gabriel cross the space, passing by his son without feeling the need to address him. He just left them to survive one another, vanishing into the light and the sounds of the long-neglected venue.
It was quiet, the thrum of the party the only commentary. It faded and dulled as Adrien slowly closed the door, letting it shut without a sound and sealing them away in the private space.
Nino’s hands were shaking, and he knew perfectly why now; there was no anger left to compete for his confusion. He breath became uneven as Adrien stepped forward, coming towards him slowly but falling short with a sizable distance left between them.
The expression on his face was completely unreadable, set firmly in place as he stood there and said nothing. All Nino could hear now was his heart, and his breathing, the tempos erratic and out of sync.
“A-Adrien,” he finally managed, his hands anxiously fumbling with his cuffs. He let out a nervous laugh, unable to look away from his face. “L-look I don’t really know how much of that you heard, but I-,”
“I’ve been looking for you for half an hour,” Adrien spoke flatly, something just below the surface of his tone. “I called you a million times.”
Nino’s hand twitched towards his pocket, another uneasy laugh slipping out. “It must have died…,” he lied.
There was silence, for a while.
“I- I was-… Nino,” Adrien let his name out in a rush, like a gasp almost, and his unreadable expression cracked just a bit into endless guilt, “I came out here so ready to apologize and take you out of here, I was ready to say sorry for dragging you here and making such a big deal out of this even though I knew it made you uncomfortable. I knew you were having a horrible time I knew you hated it but I didn’t- I-,” he stopped again. Adrien looked away, staring down at the cold marble like he needed the distance, and to Nino’s horror he saw his shoulders shake as his hands balled into fists. “I thought you hated fancy parties, I thought you hated formal events. I thought you hated the people and the posturing and everything else I didn’t think-,” he stilled, and looked up. And the look on his face broke his heart.
“Nino is any of what you just said true? Please…,” and his voice cracked, “Please tell me you don’t really believe anything you just said…”
The space between them felt like miles to him, Nino pouring over the details of Adrien’s face before he couldn’t stand it and he just looked away. His hands curled together without his permission and he didn’t know what to say… he didn’t even know if it was true.
Gabriel had put it in his head but they both knew he was right, everything Nino thought throughout the whole wretched night came back to this one idea. That everyone in the room knew who Adrien was, everyone wanted the gossip on his newest announcement. Everyone wanted to see who was so important that Adrien Agreste had stepped away from the spotlight.
Everyone wanted to see if he was worth it.
And he didn’t know the answer…
His hands shook only once more, the cold only touching him for another, long, weighted moment. When suddenly he felt something warm and urgent and nearly angry push against his chest, forcing him three steps back.
He was backed up against the railing in a second as Adrien reached for his face, tilting his face and kissing him suddenly, so urgent and quick that it was only Adrien’s strength that kept them both from slipping. Nino let out a gasp of surprise but Adrien took it from him, him mind going blank as he kissed him again, only some corner of his mind registering the distant smash of glass as Gabriel’s abandoned drink tumbled away from them both a long ways down. He fell with it, in a way, only Adrien enough to keep him from breaking into pieces.
He fumbled for something to hold, loosely gripping at Adrien’s jacket as the contact went on, his fingers limp after a while, his thoughts unfocused.
He had no idea how long it went on for, but by the time they were done they were both panting unevenly. Adrien did not leave his space, planting his hands on either side of him on the railing to steady himself. Nino held on to him for much the same reason, his chin tucked into Adrien’s shoulder as they caught their breath.
“I-,” Adrien spoke unevenly, his voice heavy, “I have something… to say.”
“Are you going to say it like that? You can, if you want to,” Nino answered, his chuckle breathy as he struggled to ground himself.
“This is important,” was his only response to his joke, the man moving so that he could force him to look up, the two of them standing face to face.
Nino looked at him again, so close up now that he could see so much behind what he had interpreted as unreadable. It was angry, and guilty, and heartbroken; it was loving, and soft, and urgent, and desperate.
“I have something to say, and I want you to understand it. I- I need you to get this. And if you don’t, I’ll say it again.” His eyes drifted all over his face, holding himself in that intimate space.
“You’re the most important thing that has ever happened to me. The most… critical, and precious thing I have ever had. What you say, and what you think means everything to me, and that’s all. That’s it, I can survive everything else, I can put everything else aside Nino.” He looked him in the eyes, searching his face like he was desperate to be clear. “You are the only unquestionable thing to me, having you with me and knowing that I can be apart of your life is all that counts. I don’t care what they think!” he nearly shouted it, gesturing behind them to things Nino couldn’t even see anymore, only focused on his face. “I don’t care what he thinks, I care what you think, and what you believe. And if you can honestly try and tell me that you- you shouldn’t… that you can’t be- be seen with me I-…” he faltered, his head tilting down and shaking slightly like he didn’t understand. Nino tried to speak but Adrien continued, taking a deep breath and trying to steel himself. “I don’t get it, I don’t understand it. I can’t see it at all and that makes it so hard to come at because I just don’t see where you’re coming from. Please Nino,” he straightened up, looking at him again, “please explain it to me so I can understand. Tell me how it makes sense because I don’t understand. What did you mean when you said ‘What if I’m not good enough,’ what did that mean? Was that him? Was that him trying to get in your head?”
“No, no no no, I-,” Nino faltered, looking down so he could breath. Adrien’s hands were cold from the marble when he reached up to cup his face. When he tried to tilt his face up Nino resisted, moving a hand to hold on to his and leaning into it. “I’m sorry… I’m sorry-,”
“Don’t apologize. Just tell me so I can understand.”
“I don’t know!” Nino finally forced out, shutting his eyes and gripping his hand tighter. For a moment Adrien thought he was going to tear it away, but he just clung to him. “I don’t know, I’m just being stupid, I don’t know how I meant it. But every headlines saying it, every fucking tabloid post all the gossip Adrien its not like you couldn’t hear it,” he moved his other hand to pull a wad of Adrien’s jacket into a fist, hanging on. “I kept pretending like it wasn’t getting to me what was I supposed to say?” he continued wretchedly, finally looking up at his boyfriend and aware of the pain on his face. “How was I supposed to tell you that I didn’t get it either. That every crapshoot paparazzi asking who was so important and I just- I didn’t know. I just felt lucky that you loved me but I didn’t know the answer to all that shit, whose so important, I don’t know either. I don’t get it, I don’t get any of this! I don’t know where to stand or who to talk to or how to look,” he whispered, gesturing to his tie again though it hardly mattered anymore. As the words fell out of him he lost steam and urgency, leaning down until his forehead was against Adrien’s shoulder. His boyfriend responded immediately, holding him tightly.
“I’m sorry…,” Nino finally apologized anyways, keeping his eyes shut and trying to focus on only them. “I should have just told you I was way too far out of my comfort zone… I knew how much this meant to you and I blew it… I wanted people to see us together. But then everyone did and they were asking who I was, and I’m not any-,”
“Don’t,” Adrien cut him off, saying it so suddenly and firmly that Nino immediately fell quiet, pulling back to look up at him. “Don’t say that.”
When he pulled back to stand face to face with him again he saw all of the same things he had seen in him before, but among those feelings now he saw disbelief.
“Don’t talk to me like you’re no one, I can’t stand it Nino… I can’t. You just have no idea…,”
Nino hesitated, wanting to look away again, but not resisting when Adrien reached up to stop him. “No idea about what…,”
“No idea about you,” he answered, and the way he said it, the way he looked at him…
It was like he was everything.
When Adrien kissed him again Nino was instantly breathless, clinging to him as Adrien pushed him back. It was like he was trying to speak, taking Nino’s advice and trying to tell him everything he needed to say in a kiss.
His thumb slid over his cheek and Adrien kissed him again, and again, trying as many times as he could to get it all across. How do you tell someone that they’re everything to you? How do you tell someone who doubts and wavers that there are some things that are just fact… indisputable, undeniable facts?
I love you.
I know.
I love you.
I know…
  I love you… I love you.
I know... I know... I love you too.

Damienette Arranged Marriage: Part 1
Okay. I fell into the Maribat AU/Damienette ship hole and I find it quite comfortable down here. But too many fics are the same and I decided to try something else. I am awful at writing romance and prefer action, but alas I will practice on this. It might be awful, but that’s only one more reason to continue writing. I want to evolve.
NEXT
Credits: Miraculous Ladybug team for the elements I take from MLB show. DC for their characters, @ozmav for the AU, @maribat-archive for giving me access to so many different stories to have take inspirations from and me for the plot.
Damiennete arranged marriage: Part 1
Marinette slowly opened her eyes. She was confused. Last thing she remembered before blacking out was a sting on the back of her neck. She was just returning from school. It hasn’t been even a week since the ‘Miracle Queen’ incident. For now, the miracle box (now in its new form) and hidden in old phonograph in her room. It was one of parting gifts from Master Fu. He wanted to make sure that she was not in any more trouble.
Oh kwami! What if Hawkmoth figured I am the new guardian. And then he would know I am by extension Ladybug. And then he could get my miraculous. And if he got my miraculous nobody would be able to stop Akuma and he would eventually overpower Chat Noir and then he would get the wish and probably he would wish to conquer the world or even the universe and it would be all my fault.
Her train of thoughts was running several hundred miles per hour until it finally crashed. She moaned. Only then, she finally got the idea to look around. She was in some dark cell. There was only small window, but it was too high for her to reach. The walls were made from large stones that were perfectly polished. There was no way to break them. She turned to the other side and noticed stairs leading to large and heavy metal doors. They were reinforced enough that she doubted anyone could smash them. There was no way out as far as she could figure out.
“I don’t know what to do Tikki… Tikki? Tikki!” Only then it dawned on her that she had no idea where her Kwami was. The sedatives were slowly wearing off, but there was still a lingering dizziness. She had hard time thinking.
There was no answer. She moved her hand to check if her earrings were in place and she was glad to find them still there. But her Kwami was gone. She had no idea what was going on. If they didn’t take her miraculous, it meant that either they didn’t know she was wearing one or they were after her for some other reason. And for the love of Tikki she could not figure out any other reason why she would find herself in such place except for her being Ladybug. Okay, she might know some celebrities and design for them, but nobody would really bat an eye if someone captured her. Okay, her parents would, but they were not important. They are important to her, but they could never pay a ransom. Now if someone captured Adrien it was another story. He was in fact captured several times, but she wasn’t a famous model…
Her thoughts started to drift into several directions. After her initial panic attack passed, she started to look around her cell more closely. The place looked old, like a dungeon in some castle. There might have been a secret exit like in one of Video Games she liked so much. Or maybe there was some loose screw in the doors… She walked to the large block of metal and tried to analyze its structure. After good fifteen minutes, she gave up. It was impossible to dismantle this from the inside. She turned and noticed that from this height, she could actually look through the window. But what she saw was not really conforming.
The snow-storm was raging outside. And there were only rocky mountain sides visible. No houses whatsoever. the idea of Akuma attack flashed through her mind, but she dismissed it. There would be some more traces even if she was only some side victim. But at the same time it meant she was no longer in Paris. Someone not only kidnapped her, but also moved her away from her home city. She was in some snowy mountains with no idea how she got there or why was she there. The feeling of powerlessness caught up with her. She curled on her small, uncomfortable bed and started to cry.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marinette was awaken by someone turning the key in the doors. She opened her eyes and quickly sat up. Previously, she cried herself to sleep, but now she wanted to be ready. When you spend most of your time as a superhero running over rooftops, even if the skill is magical, you still tend to retain muscle memory after three years of constant training. Every day. For at least an hour. Maybe she was not in peak physical condition, but Marinette was definitely not weak.
A woman walked inside. She was wearing tight black suit with upper part unzipped, revealing some of her skin. She had a sword attached to her back. Her silky brown hair was loose and curly. Her face was flawless. Marinette would call her epitome of beauty. When the woman walked into the light, the girl noticed she carried a holster that probably housed a gun.
A sword and a gun!? What is going on here…
Luckily, before she could start to panic, the woman sat moved and allowed another person to enter. Marinette used this as an opportunity to try and focus on something else. The man who entered was wearing a loose yellow robes with blue sash. He had typical asian complexion and face, together with mustache and pointy beard like that of Master Fu, except he was actually tall. The man was about three inches taller than the woman.
What really calmed Marinette was that he bowed to her.
“Greetings, Great Guardian. I am sorry we must meet in such circumstances, but the time is of the essence.” The man spoke to her in flawless French.
Okay. So I am in the Temple of the Order of the Guardians. Marinette calmed herself, but then she started to panic again. Oh my Kwami! I am in the Temple. Temple is in Tibet. I am in Tibet. I am in Tibet! That’s not in France! She took three deep breath before looking at them again. She bowed to the man.
“Uh… Hi?”
“I know this is confusing, but we are in dire need of your help Great Guardian.” The man spoke again. Marinette turned to the woman who was with him, but she had expression so emotionless that one could mistake her for wax statue.
“What do you need of me? And why do you call me the ‘Great Guardia’? I am still just learning…”
“Marinette Dupain-Cheng. Wang Fu did not reveal to you who he was?” The man in robes was confused.
“No…?”
“Before the temple fell, he was training to one day lead the Order of the Guardians. He would become the next Master. We awaited his return after the Temple was restored, but only thing we received was a message stating that he named you his successor, losing memory in the process.”
“But… I thought he never finished his training…” Marinette was slowly feeling overwhelmed with this situation.
“Yes, but sadly during the attack the previous Great Guardian surrendered his position so that Wang Fu could restart our Order. Now you inherited this position.”
“Enough chit-chat.” The woman finally spoke. She sounded irritated.
“Yes. We need to proceed with the Ceremony.” The man agreed.
“What Ceremony? What’s going on?” The girl stiffened and took defensive stance.
“I am sorry, Great Guardian, but for Order to survive, we must take drastic steps.”
The woman snapped her finger and two man dressed all black with masks covering everything but eyes entered the room. They were holding ropes.
“Wait! What are you doing!?”
“The order has fallen. Since the Temple was restored, we’ve been under constant attack. For the greater good, I had to make a deal. An alliance that will allow us to still guard the Miraculi. The League of Assassins would eventually win the siege. We did not have resources… I am sorry Great Guardian. I have failed.”
“Wha…!” Marinette had no idea what was going on. But when the two masked men approached her closer, she didn’t stand there passively. With a roundhouse kick she knocked one of them instantly and then a quick punch in solar plexus took the other one. She dashed between the two remaining opponents and tried to lunge for the doors, only to be stopped by more assassins. Behind her walked the woman and aimed her gun at her.
“Sorry girl, but it’s too important. You will do as commanded. It’s for the best anyway.” Marinette wanted to fight, but then something hit the back of her head. She saw black spots before passing away.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This time, Marinette woke up tied in a large hall in front of stone stairs. She was kneeling and couldn’t move. This habit of blacking out was really annoying. She noticed a golden cage next to her with Tikki inside. The parisian hero wanted to call to her friend, but a sound to her left got her attention. She spotted a boy with ruffy black hair and deep green eyes. He was also tied and kneeling. He wore black armor with golden ornaments and red cape. He did have a sword at his belt, but there was no way to reach it with hands behind his back. If only she could move closer to him…
“Oh great! The sleeping princess has awaken. Now maybe my mother will finally tell me what is going on!” He snarled at her in English before looking up. Marinette followed his gaze and saw two people appearing at the top of the stairs. One of the Guardians in his robes and the woman with gun and sword. She was holding a richly decorated cup.
“For centuries, the league of Assassins battled with the Order of the Guardians.” The woman was speaking in some strange language that Marinette didn’t know how she understood. “Neither side could get any advantage. But then, the Order fell. They were wiped out by their own creation. And now, after almost two hundred years, a great magic restored them, but in weaken state. They knew that they would not be able to hold us without their strongest warriors, so they suggested peace. A unification. Under common leadership, two organizations will thrive once more!”
“To ensure that neither side will exploit the other, “The Guardian continued where Assassin dropped. “Following the old tradition we shall bind the ruling dynasties. For now, through this union we ensure alliance and truce, but once they fully assume their roles, they shall together lead a new organization, stronger and more powerful than any before.”
Marinette looked in the eyes of the Guardian. Her emotions were bubbling and she felt betrayed. Her mentor lost his memories not so long ago, leaving her with all the burden by herself. The only one with who she could now talk about it was her Kwami. Now, for a small moment she hoped that the Order would help her. That with their assistance they could defeat Hawkmoth, but they instead kidnapped her and now they want to marry her to complete stranger. She took one more look at the boy. he was frowning and trying to get out of the bonds, but there was no way. Tikki next to her was also tied and there were some runes on the cage. She was not sure, but her instincts told her this was designed to keep Kwami bound at least for some time.
“Don’t worry Marinette. It will be alright.” Tikki tried to conform the girl, but she didn’t sound really all that convincing. Instead, the sadness, anger and much more different negative emotions overcame her. She zoomed out and closed herself in. Tears were flowing down her cheeks.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Damian really did not like this day. He woke up in this mess, tied, dressed in the official armor that he used to wear as an Heir to the position of Demon’s Head. The feeling of dizziness quickly passed, but only after his mother started talking the pieces clicked. He remembered the tales about the Order of the Guardians. He heard on how they disappeared long ago. Looks like they returned. He gave a side-glance to the girl. She was his age, dressed in a dark gray blazer with rolled-up sleeves; the inside of the blazer was lined in white with pink polka dots and it had black trimming. Underneath, she wore a white t-shirt with black stitching and a flower design below the collar. The design itself had pink flowers and black leaves. She wore pink rolled up jeans and pink ballet flats with dark red soles. She had eyeliner around her eyes and sports black earrings. It was miracle her makeup did not smear around her face. He then took a closer look at her. If he was to guess, she was slightly smaller than him. She had hair in color of midnight blue which worked well with her bluebell eyes. Her hair was pulled back into two pigtails, but they were messed and unruly, probably because of conditions she was kept in. Internally he growled. She was just a girl, tossed into it. The small cage next to her did not escape her attention. The small creature that looked a bit like some ladybug was trying to give the girl some comfort. She looked unimpressive for someone who would one day lead organization that could rival the League of Assassins. Or be my wife… The idea sounded ridiculous in his head, but he didn’t voice it. As strange as it may be, if he didn’t hurry it would happen. The tie was strong and tight. Strong rope was locking his hand in place in such position that even if he dislocated his thumb, it would still not help. He was completely immobilized.
Marriage ceremony in the League was always short. Thalia spoke some words, then the Guardian added some more and she walked downstairs with the cup. Damian noticed green substance in it. Instantly, his stomach rumbled. It was water from Lazarus Pit. It could only mean that some dark magic was involved this time. Usually it was just a wine, with occasional dose of poison if his grandfather demanded it, either to test them or straight up terminate. They had to drink it all between the two of them.
“May this union prosper between you, your families and friends. In this, we take the first step in uniting the two powers, for you and your descendants to lead.” Talia spoke in the language of the League. Damian was actually surprised when the Guardian was also speaking in this language during the ceremony, but he had no idea who else was there. He couldn’t really turn around to look at the audience.
“By the power vested in me by the Order of Guardians, I bless the union and hope that you will find peace and happiness with each other.” Marinette was sobbing quietly, long since drained of all tears. Damian scowled. She seemed weak. He felt the need to protect her and yet he could do nothing. It irritated him almost as much as when Drake painted his outfit black and replaced the Robin symbol with Coffee Bean. For someone constantly on caffeine he could run surprisingly well.
First, the two adults walked to Marinette. She was in too much shock to respond. Her whole life, her whole future, everything she knew was right now crumbling. She would never marry Adrien. She would never even confess her love to him. Her mind kept creating different scenarios about what would happen after the ceremony. Would she be shipped to the Guardian Temple. Was this the Temple? Would she have to live with the League of Assassins? Maybe in addition to marriage they would make the boy live with Guardians while she lived here. Or there. She had no idea where she was. How would they treat her. She was their leader, but yet she felt more like a slave, forced to do what he is told. She didn’t even notice when they put the chalice to her lips and make her drink some of the substance. She swallowed the green liquid and felt it spread warm through her, revitalizing each bone in her body. She felt a tingle of pain, in every part of her body, but it was only momentary.
Damian planned on resisting to the best of his abilities. Maybe spill the Lazarus Water from the Chalice or headbutt his mother into unconsciousness. He was mildly surprised when she handled the cup to the Guardian and leaned to him, whispering in Arabic. “If you try anything funny, we will kill this girl and then murder every single guardian in existence. for once just do as you are told.” He stiffened, quickly looking at the girl who was now sitting a bit more calm, but still anxious. He did not want her to die because of him, but allowing the League of Assassins to get even more power was also bad. He had to make a choice quick. The guardian approached him with the chalice and slowly lifted it to his lips. Damian looked at the girl once more and felt some pain in his heart. She didn’t deserve any of this. She looked so… normal. With a sight, he accepted the other half of the liquid, allowing it to travel through him and revitalize his body into the peak condition, fixing any damage he might have had.
With that, the ceremony ended. there were no more words, no more nothing. Some of the mooks untied him and Marinette. Talia walked to the scared girl.
“Now. I hope you will be good for my son. And neither of you ever think of breaking this.” She threatened them. “If you do, the League will return to war with the Order of the Guardians. And you will both be killed.” She let the threat hang in the air before walking away. The Guardian left already, leaving Marinetter alone with Damian.
“I am so sorry they dragged you into this!” She started to apologize to him and trying to hug him. His instincts told him to push her away, but he was too stunned to follow on it. This girl was actually apologizing him for her life being ruined? Just where did his mother find her?

Jealous Adrien (Damianette) Ficlet
Because I’m weak ;) (Based off my headcanons post)
“Hey Marinette!” Adrien grinned as he walked into Miss Bustier’s room. He turned to greet Alya who usually sat next to Marinette but instead of seeing the redhead he realized in horror that another seating frenzy had happened. Nino and Alya were sitting together and in Alya’s place next to Marinette was a handsomely tanned midnight haired boy with smouldering green eyes.
Adrien wasn’t stupid, he knew through his father that the boy next to Marinette was Damian Wayne hier of Bruce Wayne. He had met him once on occasion.
“Hey Damian.” He greeted. Damian gave him a nod of acknowledgement, “Agreste.”
“You guys know each other?” Marinette squeaked.
“Yep! Our dads-“
“My father his done business with his.” Damian said dismissing Adrien.
“Right.” Adrien laughed sheepishly. “Do you know Damian, Marinette?”
“My parents catered for the Wayne Gala a while back, so we met then!” Marinette beamed.
“Marinette made very adequate company.” Damian continued, fighting a blush on his cheeks. Marinette turned tomato red.
“Uh...Okay then! See ya later Mari, do you know where I’m sitting?”
“Yeah, in the back, Lila might try to sit next to you but she’s supposed to be next to Nath.”
“O-oh.” Adrien said realizing he would be sitting alone. Marinette smiled apologetically at him. That brought a smile to Adrien’s face, Marinette’s smile was infectious.
He went to sit in the back, he felt content knowing that he’d be able to catch up with Marinette during lunch.
Marinette wasn’t at lunch. According to Alya she was catching up with Damian. But they sat next to each other all class Adrien whined in his head. He wasn’t sure why he was so bothered all he knew was that he wanted to spend time with Marinette.
He spent the following weeks reliving the same thing over and over, he wanted to spend time with Mari, she was with Damian.
It wasn’t until Nathalie was checking his Chinese work that Adrien remembered that Marinette had always said how she wanted to learn Chinese, he could spend time with her that way!
He had it all planned out in his head, he’d go up to her before class and ask if she wanted to get together after school to work on Chinese, it seemed simple enough but for some reason he was a nervous wreck and every time he felt himself start to sweat on the way to school he heard Plagg stifle a laugh.
When Gorilla pulled up to the school Adrien was ready.
“Hey Mari!” Adrien exclaimed as he ignored an annoyed Damian next to her, “I was wondering if you wanted to work on our Chinese lessons anytime soon.”
“No need,” Damian said, “I speak fluent Chinese and I’ve been helping her.” Marinette blushed.
“Thanks again Dames.” Adrien swore he saw Damian bite back a smile and hide a blush. “Don’t mention it.” He grumbled. Marinette giggled which caused Damian to frown.
“What?” He asked.
“N-Nothing.” Marinette Said choking back a laugh. Adrien sighed and walked to the back of the class, it was like he wasn’t even there.
The more it went on the more Adrien started to dislike Damian. He had no idea why, his good friend got a new friend, it shouldn’t have bothered him, but bother him it did.
“Hey Alya,” Adrien groaned.
“Hey Adrien, what’s up?”
“Well I had some questions…” Adrien said, “Uh- about Marinette...and Damian.”
“Oh...Well shoot!” Alya said nervously.
“So...Do you- well- I was wondering,” Adrien sighed and then blurted, “Why is she only spending time with Damian and no one else?!?!”
Alya laughed. “Somebody’s jealous.” Adrien started to protest but Alya cut him off. “Well here’s the scoop: Marinette and Damian have been hanging out a lot and I know for a fact that Marinette likes him- as in a crush- and she might ask him if he feels the same way. I bet they’ll be a couple by the end of the week.”
“O-oh.” Adrien was taken aback.
“Why so glum? Aren’t you happy for Marinette?” Alya said in a baiting tone.
“O-of course. Well, thanks Alya, bye.” He said hanging up.
“That poor boy really is oblivious.” Alya said to herself as she got ready to help Marinette ask Damian out.
“Plagg,” Adrien sighed flopping onto his bed, “What's the deal with Damian? I know I don’t like him, but I don’t know why.”
“Well kid I think the answer’s kind of obvious.” Plagg said as he shoved a piece of Camembert in his mouth. He swallowed and then continued, “You have a crush.”
Adrien wrinkled his nose, “I don’t think I love Damian-“
“Not on him kid,” Plagg said exasperated, “On the baker girl.” Adrien cocked his head, “Marinette’s just a friend. Besides, I only have eyes for Ladybug.”
“Uh huh, sure. Keep telling yourself that.” Plagg said rolling his eyes, “Isn’t it time to patrol with your Lady?”
“Oh yeah I guess it is.” Adrien said, still lost in thought, “Plagg, claws out!”
He landed on a rooftop with great precision as he saw Ladybug come into view. “Hey Ladybug.” Adrien said, “Everything’s in order with my side.”
Ladybug nodded, “Mine too. I have to get going soon, but-“
“Wait!” Chat Noir said running towards her, “Can we talk really quick? It’s important.”
Worry flashed across Ladybug’s eyes, “Sure what is it?” She asked as she sat down on the roof motioning for Chat to do the same.
He took the invitation. “Well there’s this girl...and well lately she’s been spending a lot time with this guy. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy that she has a me friend but I miss my friend. She’s always busy with him now.” Ladybug nodded. “The guy she hangs around...well I don’t like him, but I don’t know why I don’t like him. I just feel like he’s hogging her, you know? And one of my friends said they might start dating...” He huffed.
Ladybug burst out laughing. “Hey!” Adrien exclaimed.
“Sorry,” she said as she stopped her laughter, “It’s just, it’s obvious you have a crush on her. Come on: you don’t like the guy she’s spending time with, and you want to spend more time with her, even the way you talk about her makes you seem like you like her.”
“That’s what my kwami said.” Chat Noir chuckled.
“Well they are tiny gods, maybe you should’ve listened to Plagg.” Ladybug said.
“But Mar- she’s just a friend.”
“Why is she just a friend?” Ladybug asked.
“Well- I-“ Chat Noir scratched the back of his neck.
“Looks like you have things to figure out Chat Noir,” Ladybug laughed as she yo-yoed away.
“Maybe I do…” Adrien said as he watched the red clad superhero retreat.
Chat Noir was deep in thought as he bounded across the rooftops of Paris. Could he really have a crush on Marinette? He entertained the thought.
What did he like about Marinette? Marinette...whose smile could light up a room, whose eyes crinkled when she laughed, whose face got so adorably red, who was so beautiful ...and he had a crush on Marinette Dupain-Cheng.
Adrien sighed as he leapt across Paris, he realized he had subconsciously drifted towards the Dupain-Cheng bakery.
Well...maybe that was good. Maybe he could ask Marinette as Chat what the deal was with Damian. Alya had said Marinette liked him, but maybe Damian didn’t feel the same.
Adrien sighed, it wasn’t likely, Marinette was so pretty and smart and awesome, any guy would’ve been lucky to have her.
Adrien felt a twinge of jealousy rising in his stomach as he scampered towards Marinette’s balcony.
He heard her before he saw her.
The adorable laugh that sounded like musical notes.
“Just teasing Princess.” Said a fairly tall black haired man with blue eyes.
Adrien felt another stab of jealousy at the man who’d called her “princess”, not only was he being replaced in Marinette’s life as Adrien, but also as Chat Noir too.
“But you probably will be our little sister soon.” Said a taller man to Marinette as he ruffled her hair. “If Little D finally gets some courage.”
Marinette blushed.
Adrien recognized them finally, the other Wayne boys, Jason and Richard, standing next to them was Timothy and Damian, who looked like he was about to commit a murder.
“Yeah, when are you gonna ask Princess out?” Jason teased at Damian. Adrien felt another pang of jealousy.
Damian grumbled out a response but Chat didn’t hear it, he was already running back home.
The next day he started fresh.
It might be my last chance Adrien thought bitterly as he carried flowers with shaky hands into DuPont.
He scanned the school for Marinette, his eyes finally locked on her and his feet moved on their own accord.
With every step he felt more unsure.
Then he remembered what Kagami has said to him once,
“I’m going to tell you the same thing I told Marinette,” she had said right before they broke up, “Your hesitation is what’s causing these problems. When you finally figure out what you want, it might be too late, I never hesitate.”
Adrien breathed in and out as he walked closer, no hesitation. His breathing became shaky as he finally walked closer to Marinette.
She was a vision. She was wearing a dress that was an homage to the American superhero Robin, and she was giggling beautifully again.
Adrien felt his heart sink.
Next to her was Damian. He leaned in to her.
No, Adrien pleaded silently as he walked faster.
He whispered something in her ear.
Oh kwami, no
Then he leaned in more, and kissed her.
Everything happened in slow motion.
Adrien clutched his flowers tightly and felt tears start to fall.
He felt so much despair.
“I’m sorry Plagg.” He whispered softly as he let his ring fall to the ground and welcomed a black butterfly into his flowers.
“Brise-coeur, I am Hawkmoth.”

Watch The Eyes: a tour of revelation [12]
[11]    masterpost     ao3     [13]
Dick was looking at his watch at quarter past eight, standing outside of the classes hotel. The bus was due to leave at 8:30 am for a tour of WE staring at 9:15 am. The manor was very quiet that morning. Usually Damian was up and ready to go talking to Alfred in the kitchen but he must have missed him.
Tim was business as usual though. Wandering zombie like towards the coffee pot. They had tried to get him to stop his incredible caffeine intake a few times and everytime they realized just how inventive and sneaky he could be. Taking it directly out of his hand may lead to all the files being remotely deleted off your phone. Or just plain being punched in the neck (he was aiming for your face but he can't see without that caffeine). He was very clever at getting what he wanted. No wonder Bruce trusted him to act as CEO despite his age.
But Dick was the most personable out of all of Bruce's children. So here he was ready to lead this tour rather than an actual WE tour guide. It was important to Bruce that they be directly involved with the class they were sponsoring rather than just being a distant benefactor.
Not that Dick minded. He loved to spend time at home with his family and if that meant leading some teenagers around for a fee days, so be it.
He could see Caline in the lobby of the hotel, obviously waiting on the students to be finished with their complementary breakfast. They started to arrive in the lobby one after another some looking more awake than others. The Italian girl he remembered from yesterday was hanging tightly to the arm of a bespectacled girl with curly auburn hair. He saw that she looked a little worried. She suddenly turned to the one clinging to her arm. She said something he couldn't hear and the girl released her. The girl turned and ran to the elevator, going up. About ten minutes later, she came back with a dark haired girl, looking a tad bit disheveled, but ready to go.
Satisfied that she had everyone, Mlle. Bustier waved an arm and directed the class outside. They all followed, the afformentioned girl reclaimed her position clinging to her friend, all but shoving the other out of the way.
Dick shook his head at the sight. He remembered high school.
Caline smiled at the sight of their tour guide waiting outside for them.
"Okay, Max, Alix, Kim, Lila, Nino, Adrien, Sabrina, Mylene, Chloe, Juleka, Ivan, Nathaniel, Rose, Alya and... oh, what happened to Marinette?" she frowned.
A few of the students looked around at each other. Clearly they didn't see her. The blond boy looked like he was about to go back in to look for her when she made her appearance.
"Right here Mlle. Bustier! Sorry, I dropped my purse in the lobby," she looked apologetic.
The teacher gave a small chuckle before finally facing Richard with a smile.
"That's everyone!"
"Great! Now if we can all get on the bus, we'll head over for our tour of Wayne Enterprises," he said.
The students boarded, some more excited than others. Rose was bouncing in her seat. She and Juleka sat behind Lila and Alya. Lila was taking this time to fill the sweet girl's head with more lies about her supposed influential soulmate. With continued glances over at Richard, she started her story.
"I was texting my dear Damian all night, so I'm so sorry if I fall asleep in the seat Alya!" Lila said sweetly.
"That's okay! I can't blame you for wanting to talk to your soulmate," Alya assured.
"He invited me over tonight for dinner! I can't wait to see him after all this time," she stared dreamily out the window.
Marinette tried to hide her gag. Luckily only Alix noticed who in turn had to hide her smirk behind her fist. Kim, sitting next to Alix, noticed and gave her a sharp poke to the side, which of course started a poke war. Marinette rolled her eyes at her friend's competitive nature.
"We may just have to forgo our deal to wait until we graduate. Thank you all for being so supportive of me," Lila started to tear up, despite her dry eyes.
"I can't believe you're soulmates with Damian Wayne!" Rose exclaimed.
That got Dick's attention. How would she have figured out his identity so quickly? He gave a small glance back at the girl who spoke. She was quite short with blonde hair and blue eyes. He gathered that Damian's soulmate had blue eyes. But this girl wasn't the one claiming the bond and she seemed pretty attached to the tall girl she was sitting next to. So Dick looked to the seat in front of her to the girl with the glasses and the one that was hanging on her. Neither of them had blue eyes. He turned back around, disappointed and hoping he wouldn't have to confront the girl about her extravagant lie.
'Would it be petty to call out a child?' he thought. 'She'll be joining Damian's year tomorrow. If I don't say anything, he definitely will. Oo, maybe I should intervene before he does?'
Dick ultimately decided to monitor quietly and unless she said something that put a bad light on anyone in his family, he wouldn't say anything. He frowned to himself.
Finally the bus arrived at WE, pulling up to the side walk. He led everyone inside and checked in at the main desk, collecting a pass that would allow him to show the children different and more exclusive wings of the building. He brought up a bright smile he first directed at the teacher, who returned his smile, before turning and facing the teenagers in front of him. Their chatter died out slowly.
"I hope you all wore comfortable shoes for walking. At the end of the tour you will be given a pass for a complementary lunch. Alright! Let's get started."
Before Richard could even take the first step of the tour, his phone started to ring. He pulled it out of his pocket and frowned. Eyes lighting up with recognition, he swiped to answer.
"Baby Bird?"
Marinette choked and whipped her head around to face the tour guide. She couldn't hear what "Baby Bird" was saying but Richard looked absolutely bewildered before starting to smile.
"Sure, but why not ask Alfred?- How you getting there?- Okay, I'll give them a call and let B know."
He shook his head as he put his phone back in his pocket.
"Sorry everyone! My little brother woke up late this morning. I'm going to give his school a call real quick."
He took a few steps away to make his call while Marinette strained to hear what he was saying over her pounding heart. When that failed she tried to read his lips. A skill she did not have.
'So they are brothers. Wait, no. Come on, Marinette. What is the chance of it being that easy?'
Marinette slumped down next to Adrien who tapped her shoulder, concerned.
She tried to give him a reassuring smile but she could tell it fell short. He gave her a suspicious smile in return.
Richard soon returned from his call and beckoned for them to follow him. From the lobby and ground floor, he told them about the history of the company. They got to learn a bit about Bruce Wayne's parents and the branches of the company they were a big part of or that were dedicated in their names. It was all very interesting and normally Mari would be listening with rapt attention. But she was distracted, paying too much attention to the speaker himself than the words he was saying.
Eventually she had to stop denying the obvious. She didn't spend more than fifteen minutes in Nightwing's company. But he was unmistakable. The easy way he moved, the tone and timbre of his voice. This man fought crime at night. Their tour guide midnights as a vigilante. When she came to that conclusion, she spent the rest of the tour looking anywhere but his face.
'Richard. Richard what?'
It seemed her new goal of the day was to figure that out.
By the time they got to the cafeteria for lunch, Marinette had learned practically nothing about the Wayne building or the company. Her classmates were filing in past their guide who was passing off little slips of blue paper. She internally cringed. As she passed by and gingerly took her paper from his hands he said,
"Show these to the cashier after getting your food. Okay, everyone! I'll be nearby if anyone has follow up questions. Don't hesitate to ask."
Adrien grabbed her shoulder lightly. She jumped and looked at her friend.
"Come on, let's go get something to eat. I know you missed breakfast," he smiled.
Her face flushed at the memory. Her phone decided enough was enough and died halfway through the night. So no alarm and Marinette did not have the forethought to schedule a wake up call the the front desk. So she slept straight through Mlle. Bustier knocking on everyone's doors due to her late night. It wasn't until Alya finally arrived, banging on the door that she actually became aware of her surroundings. She had to rush to get ready, barely having time to brush her hair. She had to tie up her hair on the bus. It was good that she had laid out her outfit the night before or she would have been in an even worse time crunch.
They made their way through the line, following Nino's footsteps, who was following Alya's steps in turn. Once they had turned in their lunch tickets and sat down Marinette started to look around for their teacher. She was hoping Mlle Bustier could tell her a bit more about Richard without being obvious. She finally spotted her over by the register, where she had just finished walking through the line. Marinette stood.
"Mari?"
She looked down at Adrien's questioning eyes. Giving him a weak smile, she patted his shoulder.
"I'll be right back."
Mlle. Bustier chose to sit at the edge of the room so she could keep an eye on as many of her kids as possible. She saw Marinette coming and she lifted her face to greet the class president.
"Yes, Marinette? Do you need something?" she asked pleasantly.
"I just have a quick question?"
"Was that a question?" Caline asked.
Marinette backpedaled and shook her head.
"No, no... that wasn't it."
"Okay, then what is it?"
"I was just wondering..." she trailed off, only continuing when the teacher raised an eyebrow at her deflective tone. "if you knew Monsieur Richard's last name?"
Blinking in confusion, she stared at the girl standing before her. Eventually she shook her head.
"I met him at the same time you did. You'll have to ask him."
Marinette cursed mentally. Looks like if she wanted answers she'd have to be direct. Something she was not good at. (Something her soulmate was very good at.)
"Well. Thank you anyway." she looked back at the far table she left Adrien at.
He waved.
She did not wave back.
Instead she continued scanning the room for Richard. He was seated a few tables away from Lila's little group. That was where Alya and Nino ended up as well, but her eyes just skipped over them in favor of the suspected vigilante.
A wave of calm confidence and what felt almost like anger came over her and she marched toward him. Lila noticed her walk and followed her gaze to the Wayne employee who was sitting next to a younger man, a laptop open in front of him. Her eyes narrowed imperceptibly.
When Marinette finally passed by, she loudly began to spin a new lie, or a continuation of an older lie. When the shorter girl kept walking, paying no attention to the liar, her eyes narrowed further. The girls sitting around her pleaded for her to keep talking so she did, putting Dupain-Cheng on the back burner.
Dick looked up, startled, when one of the girls from the tour group planted her feet right next to him at his table. Tim barely glanced over from his precious coffee.
He looked at her stony expression, kind of nervous. He had no idea what he did wrong.
"I have a question," she said in English.
Her voice did not match her expression. It was soft and he got the impression she rarely had negative things to say. The French accent certainly helped her case.
"Yes, Miss...?"
"Marinette Dupain-Cheng," she supplied.
Tim finally decided to start paying attention.
"The class president?" he asked blearily.
"Oui- I mean, yes."
Dick called back her attention with a head bob.
"What is your question?" he asked.
Tim leaned in a bit to hear over the din of the cafeteria. Her face steeled and her took a deep breath.
"What is your last name?"
He looked a bit reluctant to say, more surprised than anything else, but she did not waver.
"Grayson," he said at last.
Her expression tinged with surprise before she nodded.
"The eldest," was all she said before she thanked him with a sweetness that came out of nowhere and walking away.
"What was that about?" Tim asked around a sip of his coffee.
Dick gave a small shrug before looking down at his food. So she knew his name. He only hoped this revelation did not cause any waves of students suddenly excited to talk to him. He wasn't that worried about it. He was used to attention because of the Wayne influence. But the girl did not gravitate toward the big group of students a few tables down. Instead she walked further down, sitting next to the blond boy who looked at her expectantly. She waved him off.
"Almost reminded you of someone right up until the end, wouldn't you say?"
"What?" Dick looked at his younger brother.
Tim rolled his eyes and knocked back the rest of his drink.
"By the way, Damian's soulmate must be a great influence on him already."
"What makes you say that?"
"He said please. Twice."
Tim stared down at his empty cup. A few beats of silence passed and he smiled like someone just let him in on an inside joke. He stood up quickly and Dick jolted with surprise.
"I have an idea," Tim said before grabbing his laptop and heading out of the room.
Well okay then.

The Mermaid, A MLB Oneshot
THIS IS A ONESHOT, DO NOT ASK FOR MORE!
Adrien was bored. He was in yet another lesson, and his father was expecting him to spend time with Princess Chloe later. Better her than Princess Lila, at least. Finally, Madame Mendelieve closed her book, and headed for the door. Adrien sat still until she was gone, before jumping up out of his seat. He stretched his back and ran for the door that lead to the servant’s passages. He ran along the narrow, winding paths, before reaching the small courtyard where his best friend, Nino, was practicing his guitar.
“Hey man! How were lessons?” Nino adjusted his hat and looked up at him, smiling. This was why Adrien liked Nino. He didn’t treat him like a prince, but like a friend. It was refreshing.
“Boring as ever.” Adrien huffed, and joined his friend in the bench.
“Well I have some good news! Captain Theo has brought back something awesome from his latest trip! You’ll never guess what it is.”  Nino smirked and plucked a string.
“What? Another treasure chest?” Adrien scoffed.
“Nope. An actual mermaid!” Adrien froze. A mermaid? No way.
“Be realistic, Nino. Mermaids are just myths.”
“No! I saw this one myself! We can go see it tomorrow morning, I’ll set it up. It’s gonna be so cool!” Nino bounced, excited.
“Alright, alright. For now, let’s head in; it’s almost time for lunch.” Adrien gave Nino a hand up, and the two reentered the palace
X0X0X
Marinette swam back, assessing the glass that held her. She flicked her tail as she thought, before nodding. She angled her shoulders, braced her arms, and slashed her tail down. Her body jetted through the water, and she rammed against the glass and bounced off. With a growl, she watched the glass. Nothing. She had rammed the glass dozens of times and nothing had happened! A weak chuckle came from the outside of her tank, and she glared at the human leaning against the wall across from her enclosure.
“That won’t work, little fish. The glass is bulletproof. No matter how many times you ram into it, it won’t even crack. You may as well rest. The prince will be here to see you in the morning.” He smirked at her before strolling away. She had to get home. She couldn’t stay here! Without her, the sea would die! She swam back, assessed the glass, and readied herself again.
X0X0X
Adrien followed Nino deep into the basement of the palace. They weren’t near the old dungeons, but he still felt uneasy.
“How much further?” He hissed to Nino.
“Just through here. C’mon!” Nino grabbed his wrist and pulled him through the doorway into a dark room. Nino flipped the lights on, and Adrien glanced around. One wall was glass, and looked like an aquarium. The bottom of the tank was coated in sand, with pearls of various sizes and colors scattered about. There were a few strands of seaweed swaying in the water, and the largest clam shell he had ever seen was sitting open in the center. It looked like it could host a mermaid, but that was just it. There was no mermaid. Adrien turned to Nino and sighed.
“I told you, Nino, mermai- “Adrien was cut off when he heard a large thunk from the other side of the glass. He wheeled about, and felt his jaw drop.
Floating on the other side of the glass was an honest to god mermaid. Her hair was black, and her tail a vivid pink, almost red. Her eyes, which glared hatefully at him, were a shimmering blue. Her skin was paler than a pearl, and she had a splattering of freckles. She pounded a fist against the glass, and he realized she had been making odd sounds at them.
“Whoa. She’s…” Adrien trailed off, unsure of what to say. Lovely did not fit, nor did beautiful. She was flawless.
“Creepy? Yeah. I mean, it’s pretty and all that, but something about it just sets me on edge.” Nino shuddered. Adrien glanced at his friend, confused. She was not creepy! She was the most perfect thing he had ever seen. He glanced back at her and sighed. She was swimming away now, tail slashing through the water.
“Where is she going?” He asked Nino.
“It keeps trying to break the glass. It won’t work, though. The glass is bullet proof.” Nino knocked against the glass, smirking. “Just think, the kingdom of Agreste has it’s own personal mermaid. I hear that their singing can convince men to throw themselves overboard. Wanna see if it’ll sing for us?” Nino pulled his guitar from his back, and strummed a cord. Suddenly, the mermaid was there, face and hands pressed up against the glass. She was staring at Nino with her pupils blown wide. He continued to play, a small shanty he had learned from the sailors down by the docks, and the mermaid began to hum.
X0X0X
Marinette would never admit, but she loved human music. They could not sing, not like her people, so they had made things to do it for them. The darker human was using one right now, pulling at strings and watching her. She began to hum, wanting him to play more. When he did not stop, when she began to sing in her mother tongue.
“Oh, the waves roll low
And the waves roll high,
And so, it goes,
Under a bright blue endless sky.
Waves try to measure,
The days that we treasure,
Wave hello and wave goodbye.”
It was an ancient lullaby, one that every merfolk heard from their parents at some point as a baby. The humans were staring at her, wide eyed. The pale one hit the darker one on the arm, and said something she could not hear. The darker one gulped and began to play again. Marinette beamed and quickly thought of another lullaby, one Queen Anarka had taught her the last time she and her children had come to visit.
“Hush now, mo stoirin,
Close your eyes and sleep.
Waltzing the waves,
Diving the deep.
Stars are shining bright,
The wind is on the rise.
Whispering words, of long-lost lullabies.
Oh, won’t you come with me?
Where the moon is made of gold.
And in the morning sun,
We’ll be sailing.
Oh, won’t you come with me?
Where the ocean meets the sky.
And as the clouds roll by,
We’ll sing the song of the sea.”
Marinette held the last note, and sighed when it was done. She loved that song. It sounded better when her friends acted as her chorus, but it was okay on her own. The door opened behind the two humans, and let in the one who had caught her. He was tall and had dark hair, wearing a great deal of dark fabric. The two smaller humans spoke with him, before leaving with him. Marinette sighed. She hated being alone. Merfolk were social creatures, almost always together. Worst of all was that the small space she was kept in was dark, with no lava pockets or glow fish to give her heat and light. She shivered, and swam into the seaweed patch. Her family would get her out of here soon.
X0X0X
They returned the next day, the pale one and the dark one. This, time, neither carried an instrument. Instead, the sat and stared at her. The pale one began to sing, and the dark one reluctantly joined him. Marinette recognized the song. It was a love song! How dare this puny human try to woo her! She glared and sat down inside the large clam shell, turning her back. She was engaged, as any merfolk with eyes could tell. Of course, human’s might not be able to, but she still would not sing with them. She sat with her back turned until they left. She would be out of here soon enough.
X0X0X
Adrien burst into Nino’s room, beaming.
“Whoa, Adrien! Is everything okay, dude?” Nino stood from his bed, setting aside his headphones.
“I just had the best idea, Nino! A festival! We call for the most talented musicians in the land, and we have them perform with her! We can move her cage into the square! It’ll be great!” Adrien was bouncing in place.
“That’s a great idea, dude! We’ll have to ask Captain Theo, since he’s the one who caught it though.” Nino grabbed his headphones and headed for the door. “Let’s go ask!”
X0X0X
He had said yes, and preparations began at once. Adrien commissioned a large tank, big enough that she could swim around. Nino began sending invites to the best musicians in all of Agreste. Soon, the big day came. The tank was placed in the square, and the mermaid had been moved while she slept. She had woken up dazed and confused, swimming about and looking out at the square. She had caught sight of the water on the other end of the square, and had been staring at it ever since.
X0X0X
She knew humans were foolish, but this was extreme. She was within just a few yards of the ocean; she could hear it calling out for her! She hummed, low in the back of her throat, and waited. After just a few minutes, she heard the reply.
“We cannot reach you, princess! You are too far! Try to move closer!” It was Sir Pierre, head of the guard. She looked around, frantic. She was so close! She just had to move this tank! She rammed her shoulder against the side, and growled when nothing happened. She tried, again and again, to move closer, but all she did was slosh water over the edge of her tank.
“I can’t! The cage I am in is too heavy! I will distract the humans while you look for a way to get me out!” Marinette swept around the cage, looking at all the humans staring at her. She saw several in a line, each holding an instrument. The pale one who visited her was standing on a platform, facing the crowd. He began to speak, and one of the humans in line stepped forward. Two others came over and quickly assembled a device next to her tank. Once the machine was all together, he smirked at the crowd before pushing several buttons. The machine began to emit horrible sounds, but the humans seemed to enjoy it. She slammed her hands over her ears, and shook her head, trying to block out the noise. It sounded like the machine was trying to make music, but was failing. Horribly. It was dull and lifeless, lacking soul. After a few seconds of this torture, the pale one spoke again. The one controlling the machine yelled at him, before stomping off. The two humans form before disassembled the machine, and another human stepped forward. This one had vivid hair and dramatic clothes. It strummed at it’s guitar, and began to sing.
“Record scratch; Steve Miller Band, Tattooed necks and tattooed hands. Oh, how don’t you drown in a rain storm? Fresh regrets, vodka sweats, the sun is down and we’re bound to get exhausted and so far from the shore.” Marinette trilled when the human began the song. She knew this one from a few fishing boats playing it while they were working! She gladly joined in, shimmying her tail to the beat.
“You’re never gonna get it, I’m a hazard to myself, I’ll break it to you easy This is hell, this is hell! You’re looking and whispering; you think I’m someone else. This is hell, yes. Literal hell!” She struggled to form the words, as she did not speak the human tongue. “We don’t have to talk, we don’t have to dance, we don’t have to smile, we don’t have to make friends. It’s so nice to meet you, let’s never meet again! We don’t have to talk; we don’t have to dance; we don’t have to dance!” By the end of the song, Marinette was panting, and had almost been distracted from why she was doing this. A few other artists tried to get her to sing, but only one succeeded, a small girl with a violin. After her refusal of another artist, she saw a flash of teal out of the corner of her eye. She twirled in her tank, pretending to be jubilant, but really trying to make sure she hadn’t just imagined what she saw. There he was, hiding in a corner! He winked at her and she couldn’t help but trill.
The pale one was smiling at her, like she was a sea-lion who had just done some cute trick. How ridiculous. Another human came up to him, with long hair the same color as the pale ones. She wore a dress that trailed behind her, and sneered at Marinette. The pale one smiled at her, and the female said something to him. He nodded, and she approached the tank. She snapped her fingers, and a red-haired human approached, carrying a stool. The blonde sat, and began to sing. Marinette slammed her hands over her ear frills and whined. The girl couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket! The blonde snarled, and slammed a hand against the tank, causing ripples in the water that disoriented Marinette. She shook her head, trying to think clearly. The blonde stormed off, and the pale one addressed the crowd before chasing after her.
X0X0X
This was not going how he had planned! The mermaid was supposed to sing with all of the best musicians Agreste had to offer. Instead, she had sung with Jagged Stone and no-one else. He had finally decided to let the commoners try, but only a small girl with a violin managed to get the mermaid to perform. He had panicked, and turned it into a contest. Chloe had then decreed that she could easily make the creature perform, and had begun singing a song from her homeland. The mermaid acted as if she was in physical pain, and Chloe had thrown a fit before storming off. He had told the audience they were going to give the mermaid a break, and chased after her. It had taken half an hour to calm her down and drag her back. By the time he had gotten back onstage, most of the crowd had left, with only a few bored teens still gathered around the tank.
“Your Highness, may I try?” A tall boy with hair that faded to teal at the tips was standing by the stage, gazing up at Adrien hopefully.
“You can try, but there’s no guarantee she’ll respond.” Adrien shrugged. This boy didn’t even have an instrument that he could tell, but it couldn’t hurt. The boy nodded, and headed for the tank, where the mermaid was watching him approach. The boy sat on the stool Chloe had abandoned and smiled at the mermaid.
“Lavender’s blue, dilly, dilly, lavender’s green. When I am King dilly, dilly, you shall be queen.” The mermaid beamed and twisted about as if twirling.
“Who told you so, dilly, dilly, who told you so?” The mermaid sung back, not in the stilted words of before, but flowing and smooth. There was a challenging look in her eye, one that was matched by that in the boys.
“T’was my own heart, dilly, dilly, that told me so.” He shot back, smiling. The two began to sing in unison, and it entrapped Adrien, making him unable to look away.
“Call up your men, dilly, dilly, set them to work. Some to the plow, dilly, dilly, some to the fork. Some to make hay, dilly, dilly, some to cut corn, while you and I, dilly, dilly, keep our selves warm. Lavender’s green, dilly, dilly, lavender’s blue, if you love me, dilly, dilly, I will love you.”
“Let the birds sing, dilly, dilly, and the lambs play. We shall be safe, dilly, dilly, out of harm’s way.” The mermaid took over, placing one of her hands flat against the glass, while the other was fisted over her heart. “I like to dance, dilly, dilly, I like to sing. When I am queen, dilly, dilly, you’ll be my king. Who told me so, dilly, dilly, who told me so? I told myself so, dilly, dilly, I told me so.” She pulled out the last note, and Adrien was shocked to see the usually hateful mermaid, smile tenderly at the blue-haired boy. Then, there was a crash from behind him. Adrien wheeled around, trying to find the source, only to see a broken vase laying in the road.
By the time he turned back around, the blue-haired boy had thrown something into the tank. The mermaid grabbed it, and leapt out of the tank, flinging it about her shoulders. She landed not as a girl with the tail of a fish, but a seal. The boy scooped the seal into his arms, and ran for the water. He tossed the animal in, before turning to face Adrien.
“Take her again and we will sink your nation like we did Atlantis!” He bellowed, before diving into the water. Adrien ran to the edge of the dock, and waited, frantic. The boy was human, he would need to breathe eventually. He stood, frantically searching the water, before he saw them. The two were holding each other tight, wrapped in each-others arms. She was back to being a mermaid, her tail flicking just below the surface. When the young prince finally dragged his gaze to the boy, he was shocked. He now had a tail, longer than hers, that shimmered green and teal. The two were speaking in a language he did not understand, but from the way his hands cupped her cheeks it was a private moment. The mermaid flashed him a furious glare, before diving into the ocean.
“What just happened?” He asked.
“Dude.” Nino muttered. “I think your pet just ran away.

“Allez!”
Blades clinked together, pieces of cold metal vibrating at one another with the impact of intense swings and advances.
Opponents approached, yet jumped away from one another like preying ticks. All students of the fencing class were engaged in heated battles. Much like these two friends - Kagami and Adrien, the top of the class were fighting one another once more. Their blades were shaking in pain exertion and cold steel.
Kagami lunged forward to hit Adrien. Clank. He dropped his guard, he was vulnerable-
No. No, he was prepared. The model dodged halfway and decided to strike for himself. Their shoulders collided, sending Kagami onto the floor.
Hard.
A dull clash came from where she landed. She hissed at the sudden emergence of pain and rolled over. At once, she was back on her feet and took her fighting stance. Coal hair fell back into her face, bangs slightly blurring her vision.
 “Arrêt!”
The director interfered, gradually approaching Kagami. She was in place, prepared to fight and send Adrien into one out of many many more losses to come. The foot she had landed on was lightly burdened with only a small deal of her body weight. She heavily relied on her unaffected leg to carry her through this.
Still, she stood tall, slightly bowed. One of her hands was around her handle. The other one was close to her body.
 “Kagami, are you okay?”
Adrien rushed over while his friend remained en garde. However, when he pulled his mask off, she had the courtesy to validate his concern and lift hers, too.
“Of course I am! Go back, I want a rematch!”
There was a fire in her words, yet the blonde looked at her, a sceptical look pulling his facial features down. The usually rather sunny and carefree expression was wiped off his face. His mouth opened to say something but Kagami insistently put her foot down. The ambitious student ignored the shocking pain striking her like an unexpected avalanche.
Their instructor shrugged. By now, he was close enough to see for himself.
“If you can put weight on it without pain, it should be fine. Are you sure you are good to go?”
The girl gave the man a maroon side-glare through her bangs and nodded. Her voice was cool and composed as ever, unusually deep for a girl so pretty, some conservative souls would think.
 “Yes.”
Her warm eyes were set on the invisible goal of success on all levels and in all areas. Even if she tried to care about the pain in her ankle, she wouldn’t be able to stop her urge to compete and succeed in life.
It was too deeply ingrained in her to be perfect and strive for constant improvement. She had the stress to impress.
Adrien looked at her for long enough to doubt his own doubt in her. Kagami’s determination egged him on to step back and get into position. She followed suit, both feet firm on the ground - as if to assure her friend.
“Tell me, if you change your mind, Kagami.”
The director stood before them, examining the scene. His eyes wandered to Kagami and both students lowered their masks to cover their faces.
It was the silent agreement for another fight.
 “En garde.”
They got into position, their movements like mirroring images to one another. The friends were in perfect sync. Kagami was a little slower but it felt like less than a heartbeat.
It was just the sudden command. Nothing about the foot, he reminded herself.
 “Pret.”
 Bodies tensed, orbs gazed.
 “Arrêt!”
 ***
Kagami sighed, clutching her sports bag. Marinette was on the other side of the room, watching from the sidelines. Sometimes she was not sure whether her girlfriend was here to support her or Adrien. She did not mind it, yet it stayed in her mind for longer than it should.
Marinette was just an exceptionally positive and supportive friend. She wanted them both to have a good time, to have a successful time!
No. Actually, she was.. she was not like this. Marinette cared about their well-being and joy more than any competition.
The black-haired girl sat down, kneeling ceremoniously as she cheered for the two. Kagami*s little butterfly was so loud, the director had to silence her.
“You got this Adrien! Kagami - you can do this! Have fun!”
If Marinette was a little less shy about feelings and more affectionate, she would yell out her feelings for these two - for all here friends - at all times.
Kagami smiled at this thought. It was hidden under her mask but she was. Her eyes glanced over at Marinette and she could swear her girlfriend knew about it judging from how her pale face lit up like a light bulb. Her cyan eyes gleamed like the ocean on a sunny day.
Looking at Marinette was like looking at holiday pictures. Her face was a landscape to admire.
The instructor yelled the usual commands, his words pushing them into position and straining their muscles when they got ready to lunge at one another and attack.
Marinette’s spark faded, eyes dulling as she saw how Kagami’s was skewed to one side. The secret teenage super-hero lifted herself off her knees.
 “Arrêt!”
She walked over to the instructor in terribly slow steps. There was caution on her feet as if she was suffering for her love instead. Her sky-blue orbs focused on the limping.
Kagami’s foot seemed a bit bigger than usual, too. Maybe that was just her imagination, her worry taking over. There was a dark concern eating at her heart like hungry wolves.
Seeing her little phoenix in anything but her best condition was a stab to her own happiness.
“Excuse me, Monsieur. Can you see Kagami’s foot? I think she might have hurt it. She doesn’t seem to really put a lot of weight on it.”
The man nodded over to her and stepped in, breaking the duelling students apart. Commands in French and other things came from him and the two took a few steps back, putting distance between one another.
“Kagami. Can we see your foot?”
The black-haired girl looked up at the instructor, then at her girlfriend. A sense of confusion veiled her honey-brown eyes like another set of bangs, an invisible one.
 “Of course.”
Voice composed as ever, she slowly bent her legs to lower herself onto the mat. Her movements were measured in grace only. Not even swans were as majestic. When she moved, it reminded Marinette of ballet.
The girlfriend gingerly squatted down to Kagami’s level while the director knelt down. The fencing student took one of her shoes off and slowly removed the remaining sock. It revealed more than just flawless, milky skin. A large bruise lounged all over her foot, centralised on her ankle. It was colourful, almost in an artistic way. Several shades of blue and purple decorated her pale skin, darkening and tainting her porcelain skin.
Gasps filled the air. Kagami internally flinched at the sounds of disappointment hitting her like actual punches.
“Kagami, this is horrible! Look at your foot!”
Marinette tenderly leaned over to properly examine her girlfriend’s injury. The dark colours were clouds of bruises. Her face was in an empathetic scowl. Kagami felt the indescribable urge to cup her face and tell her it was fine. She knew better, she knew this pain on Mari’s face was a mirror to the pain she tried so hard to not cry about.
She needed to keep exercising, to move and work more in order to be better. An injured foot could not stop her from establishing a good career as amazing fencer.
“I was aware of this.. I have been icing it for the past few days. Do not worry, it is nothing, Mari.”
Daisy fingers, almost as light as Princess Snow White’s face, wrapped around the ankle, a sock in place. The fabric was pulled over quickly and swiftly. It looked painful.
Marinette’s face twisted uncomfortably. She seemed sick.
“Kagami, no. This looks really bad, I think you need to take care of this!”
Marinette’s concerned voice piped up. At the same time, the director chirped up.
“I am sorry but I’m unable to let you participate in this state. I suggest you visit the hospital.”
Maroon eyes turned dark as black coffee as the ambitious student looked up at the instructor. Her orbs were reading his words. The instructor gazed back at her, feelings undecipherable.
“This looks like a serious injury and pushing your body any further isn’t going to help. I want you out of here and going to the doctor instead.”
The fateful words donned onto the passionate fencer with a bitterness. She grabbed her shoes and pushed her injured foot into it as if to stuff a pillow in rage. Marinette squeaked, flinching in empathetic pain.
“Fine. If you won’t let me, I will train on my own.”
There was an ice-cold rage in her composed voice.
Marinette flinched at the tone, flinched at when her girlfriend shot up and dashed out of the room. She quickly thanked the director of the fencing class and rushed after Kagami.
Icy shivers blew goosebumps all over her body when she followed the fleeing figure. She had never seen her girlfriend this angry.
Hot footsteps echoed through the building as Kagami quickly pushed her things together. Instead of packing up properly, she just strapped herself off the fencing clothes. The mask was first. She threw it from herself as if putting it in the garbage. Her sports bag carried the burden of being a trash container for this deed. Disgust lead her fingers like tainted motives.
Kagami freed herself from the sweaty prison and pushed everything into the bag. The usual practice of folding and preparing her clothes for the transport was gone but so was her composure.
 “Kagami!”
Marinette burst into the locker room, breaking the eerie silence around the lonely Asian. A small blush of embarrassment took over her pale cheeks. They matched the exhausted, tensed look on Kagami’s face.
She looked at her girlfriend, eyes dark and retreated like a hurt doe. Marinette wanted to wipe all the pain away.
Slowly, she approached her friend, her partner and sat down opposite her. She gestured for Kagami to take a seat too. After a small moment of hesitation, she followed her girlfriend’s example and lowered herself onto the bench.
She sighed. Marinette tried to initiate eye contact but Kagami’s face was averted. It stayed this way, even when Marinette’s piercing blue eyes were veiled in worry.
Concern distorted her usually so gentle features. Kagami could not help but feel her heart being shredded into tiny pieces of twitching meat. Seeing her girlfriend hurt, feeling the whole world crush down onto her. It was a weird mix of annoyance, hurt - physical and mental - as much as pure rage.
 She needed t keep exercising!
Between all these thoughts and screaming pressure, a calming voice lowered onto the fire inside of her. The helpless student almost breathed freely when she heard Marinette speak up.
“Kagami, I - I am sorry to burst in and be so pressing about this. I really care about you and I see your foot in terrible condition. When I come to see my girlfriend fight and cheer for you, I want to know you are alright.”
The tension fell from her face, giving way to the softness akin to the velvet-y warmth in her voice when she continued to speak.
Kagami’s eyes widened a little and her bangs-covered face slowly turned to face her girlfriend. She was at least looking into her vague direction by now.
A slight smile appeared on Marinette’s face.
“I just got worried because you are my girlfriend. You mean so much to me and I know fencing means so much to you. I want to make sure you are in excellent condition, so you don’t have to suffer or sit out on one of your favourite hobbies.”
Kagami looked up, caramel eyes blooming in wonder as she saw the genuine agony in Marinette’s facial features. She could see wrinkles of concern, of worry and regret fighting little dents into Marinette’s usually so perfect face.
It did things to Kagami’s chest to see the other so conflicted and hurt over her decisions.
 She extended a hand.
“If you car- can... would you come to the doctor with me? I really don’t think it is such a big deal but I see you are worried and I trust your judgement. I am sorry -”
Kagami brushed through her bangs, a velvet smile adorning her features. Marinette slowly took the hand and squeezed it.
“I will always be with you, as much as I can. I am sorry for being so pushy. I am just really worried.”
 Marinette grinned at her.
It was one of these grins that looked a bit less like a smile but was somewhat between a beam and an embarrassed giggle. She really was about to just chuckle it away but Kagami tugged her over by their connected hands. When Marinette leaned over the bench, Kagami shot forward and sealed that pretty mouth with a little peck to it.
“Let’s go to this doctor before I change my mind. Again, I am doing this for you.”
Her girlfriend cheered, heat and love on her lips when she leaned in to peck her cheek.
“I am fine as long as you are okay! I just want to know I care about you.”
Her lips curled into another delicious smile, teeth flashing like porcelain and shining bright as the rest of her face. Kagami could not help but smile back at her. No matter her conflict and the voice screaming at her to keep exercising and keep fighting, she felt more love for her girlfriend than annoyance over this ordeal.
“W-well.. I care about you too.”
Kagami cuddled up to her girlfriend who softly ducked down to lay one of Kagami’s arms around her. A little tug and she had the passionate fencer leaning onto her a bit. Their bodies were closely touching.
As much as she wanted to go back to practising or complain about losing time by going to the doctor, she was more than glad to be with Marinette in this moment of potential need. She had someone to care about her, to really bond with her.
The warmth of love overshadowed the burning annoyance in her heart. Needless to say, she was not not-annoyed. She just cared more for Marinette than fencing at this moment.
 “Let’s go.”
 “Okay.”
Marinette got them a cab and brought them to the closest casualty doctor. It took almost two hours and more than enough stressing over formulas and other things for Kagami to finally have a doctor check her up.
Anxiously, Marinette was waiting outside. She seemed to talk to herself, mumbling something about encouraging words and other nice things. It seemed to straighten her posture and ease her shoulders, so the approaching doctor did not say anything until the student swiftly turned around, surprising the two.
“I can do- OH! Hello, doctor.”
One of her hands found the back of her neck instinctively and scratched it while the doctor clicked her clipboard. She could have sworn she had seen something read just now. Well, maybe it was just the hair ties in the girl’s dark strands.
“Hello. You are with Kagami, right?”
She jumped into position, seriousness shooting a straightness into her posture as if she was trying to impress the military with salutes.
“Yes, yes I am. She is alright, isn’t she? Please tell me her foot is okay! It won’t have to be cut off, will it? Oh no, you do-”
As soon as she talked, terrifying ideas and suggestions left her mouth without her consent. She could barely stop the flow of words until the doctor chuckled and waved her clipboard gingerly.
She seemed to fan the horrible scenarios and thoughts out of Marinette’s head. Silenced, she looked at the woman with a polite smile. Her mouth was closed and her attention span was opened.
“Don’t worry, don’t worry. Your friend is going to be fine. I just came over so I could tell you we will give her an x-ray scan. Her foot seems injured but we need to make sure whether it was a fracture. It might very well be. She will definitely need crutches. I am glad you brought her over. She said she would not have come without you insisting on it. You did a good thing, there.”
A smile spread all over Marinette’s face.
“Thank you doctor! Thank you for helping my girlfriend! I am glad to know I did the right thing and that you are doing so much to take care of her.”
 “You are welcome!”
The student settled onto her seat once more. The friendly white coat disappeared with clipboard, pen and clacking sounds to her steps. They seemed to echo distantly through the wide, white hallways when Marinette emerged into her little dream world of thoughts once more.
 “Kagami will be alright.. “
 She smiled.
Time seemed to move forward from then on. Before, the minutes had dragged but now time was rushing, was fleeing the present and abandoned it to become the past after every beat of the heart.
“Are you Marinette? Kagami will be out in a moment. You two can get ready to go.”
A nurse popped in, smiling kindly. Marinette waved at him, her face beaming like the sun herself.
 “Thank you, Monsieur!”
The nurse disappeared and Marinette got up to greet Kagami who walked in on crutches. She sighed upon seeing Marinette, mild annoyance painting her face.
Maybe it was pain? Knowing Kagami, she was probably upset about how crutches kept her from fencing. Not that she would not try.
Marinette would have to keep an eye on that
“Oh, hey. How is your leg?”
Crutches scratched over the cool, tiled floor.
Marinette looked at her girlfriend, hope in her eyes. She really wanted it to be something the other could get over with as soon as possible.
“My leg is fine. I am fine. It is just a small fracture. Can we go?”
Her girlfriend smiled at Kagami and nodded, cheerful as always.
 “One more thing!”
She held up her index finger as if to give a lecture. She looked like a teacher with this presentation of herself. Glasses would have made the perfect cliché teacher.
Slowly, she took a few steps to approach her girlfriend.
 “I missed you.”
She leaned in, this time. Their soft lips meeting for a moment just enough to let hearts melt and worlds disappear. Kagami’s whole life seemed to be cradled close when Marinette touched her like that.
When the artistic student stepped away, Kagami was sort of just staring at her, eyes frozen.
“I am glad you are okay, my little phoenix. But now it is time for you to be protected, too.”
Marinette gently took the sports bag from her friend and dangled it over her shoulder before rushing to open the first door on their way out. She held it open, spreading the door wide enough to let the whole world see what was inside. It felt as if she was presenting her girlfriend to the world, introducing her like the gem she was.
All proud and excited.
 “Come with me?”
The inviting smile on Marinette’s ever-shining features lured a content smile out of Kagami. Eventually, she put the crutches down onto the ground and started making her way over to her lovely companion.
“i will always be with you, injured or not.”
The two giggled, foreheads meeting when they leaned in once more. They shared another short kiss, a peck, really. Together, they moved home to accommodate Kagami at Marinette’s place.
Right now, Marinette was - more than ever - glad about summer break. Her parents were busy working but she had time to treat her partner and make sure she is okay. From what the doctors had mentioned, Kagami was supposed to stay in her lower-leg cast for about two months. They said that she had tortured her foot so much, she could have severely complicated the fracture and ended her fencing career. If she had pushed it just a bit further, maybe she would be without fencing forever.
The two had discussed all information and decided for a sleepover. They needed each other’s support and comfort in order to digest all these things. To think of Kagami without fencing was too scary for any of the to consider.
But once at home, they got comfortable. Kagami was cuddled up in Marinette’s bed, foot prodded up on a pillow and blanket covering her body to keep the unmoving figure warm and cozy. Marinette stumbled upstairs, a tray of tasty treats in her hands.
“I brought you a little something!”
She quickly moved over and set the tray down between the two. The artistic one herself placed her body on the bed, close to Kagami.
“Thank you very much. This is a ..lot of sugar. Do we only have sweets?”
 Marinette smiled.
“I texted my parents about what happened, and my mom said she will make you soup. I will get it when it is done. They said it is okay if we eat upstairs, so you don’t have to walk too much. Are your parents okay with you staying for a few nights at my place?”
Kagami nodded, her hair falling into her face a bit. Marinette leaned in to kiss her temples and brush some her bangs away.
 “Are your pain killers working?”
 Another nod came from Kagami.
Another smile appeared on Marinette’s cheerful face.
“We can do a lot of funny things, if you want to. How about watching a film?”
 Kagami smiled.
“I never really do that... I mean, I don’t usually just sit down to watch movies, especially not with others.”
Marinette leaned her head against Kagami’s and sighed. Their bodies rested against one another and Kagami allowed herself to slouch just a bit.The tension fell from her body but Marinette stayed in place and kept her up.
“I know you care a lot about fencing but you need to make more space for your social life. For friends or.. for me. If you never allow yourself to do other things and enjoy anything but fencing, you will be really upset and bored in situations like now. Make time for the people who care about you like you care about fencing classes, little knight. It’s good to self-care a bit and just”, she took a deep breath as if to demonstrate what she was about to say, “let yourself breathe. If you never regain your strength, you will tire yourself out, my phoenix.”
The sportive youth sighed in return and softly nodded her head. Marinette could feel her move. They were oddly connected by just sitting so close to one another.
It blossomed a warm feeling in her chest.
“It is hard to change habits.. I am not used to having friends, having a - a partner. I am new to all of this. I hope I’m not letting you down - or the others. Am I?”
She looked over at Marinette who shook her head. Instead, her girlfriend leaned in to grace the top of her head with the faintest of kisses. A pink blush adorned her cheeks. The sweet scent wafted over to her, lulling her into the saccharine bubble of a stress-free time.
“You are good. We are proud of you.”
 Kagami sighed, probably in relief.
“I am glad you are introducing so much change into my life. I would have never imagined living in Paris with multiple friends, even a girlfriend. I will try to watch this film with you”, she started, then paused, “I can try to make a change, now.”
“Hooray!”, Marinette cheered. One of her hands reached up over her head and she jumped up to get her laptop. She had the best film in mind already. She has heard so much about “La vie d’Adèle” and was excited to watch it with Kagami.
It was supposed to be romantic.
 “What are we watching, butterfly?”
Marinette’s face flushed as she picked out the film but instead of playing it, she moved to close the other side of her bed. Her body rose and she walked over to her desk to pick up a pen. With a “clack”, she removed the cap.
Her eyebrows formed into a mischievous position, accompanied with a sly grin.
“I forgot to sign your cast! Time to change this, little knight.~”
An excited skip was in her voice. Her words were metaphorically dancing and jumping in excitement.
In contrast to that, she carefully knelt before the bed and started writing and drawing over the cast. All the while, Kagami tried to sneak a peek at the activity but she did not see anything. Marinette was covering her actions with her back, shielding the words from her view.
 “What are you writing, Mari?”
A smile graced her lips. Gradually, she moved off the foot and revealed the writing to her girlfriend. She quickly leaned forward to see it. Squinting, she looked at her girlfriend in confusion. The cast had her immobile enough to not see the navy blue writing enough to decipher it. Marinette snapped a photo and handed her phone to Kagami to read. Caramel eyes widened as she saw the picture. Her eyes watered a little and she swiftly put away the phone in favour of tugging Marinette over for a tight hug.
“Mari, how are you so sweet - what did I ever do to deserve someone as good as you, my dear butterfly?”
The addressed student emitted a lovely giggle. She held her girlfriend close and comforted her with open arms and gentle brushes over her bed.
“You do because you are a great person. You are lovely”, she answered, slowly pressing a kiss to the top of her head,” and kind.”
She leaned in, lowering her body before carefully kissing her eyes which fluttered shut at once. When Marinette pulled away, Kagami opened her eyes to view the preciousness of her love.
“You are head-strong and care about fairness and justice”, Marinette peppered a few more kisses over Kagami’s face. She was shaking and a few tears escaped her eyes but the artist easily kissed them away, making them all disappear.
“Kagami, I would never date a person I don’t consider to be great. You are precious to me, my dear phoenix. It is rare to find a person as principled and disciplined. You are an amazing friend. We are all glad to have you.”
She sighed, inhaling the sweet scent of Kagami’s hair. Sure, she was a bit sweaty from training and the whole odyssey of coming here but her hair smelled of almonds and early spring flowers in a wild garden.
“I am so glad to have met you in my life.”
Marinette leaned in, slowly closing the gap between their noses, their mouths and faces. Their lips collided and embraced one another like the lovers they were. Pink shades melted into one, forming a heart that was their love.
When they pulled away, they only saw the warmth in each other’s eyes. Azure orbs gazed upon syrup brown ones.
If eyes could smile, they would beam at each other only.
“Let’s watch this film, Mari. My little butterfly.”
Marinette quickly moved over and cuddled up under the blanket, one hand pulling the laptop in place and the other intertwined with Kagami’s hand. She squeezed it a bit and both smiled for one another as Marinette started the hand-picked film.
The artist reached for the macarons and offered it to Kagami. She nodded and opened her mouth when Marinette rose her fingers to level with Kagami’s head. Kagami accepted the little treat with a flushed face. She reached for a pink macaron and did as her girlfriend, gently approaching her mouth with the little delicacy.
The little butterfly split her lips and allowed the treat in.
 “They are really sweet.”
 Marinette nodded.
“Not as sweet as you, though.”
The sun started to go down. Ruby rays streamed through the windows, bathing the two in the warm lights of the loving sun. The sky over Paris was never as rosy as now.
Between them, the phone display illuminated the growing darkness. “Love your imperfections, my phoenix.” A small butterfly kissed the words written over the lower-leg cast.

“Come out, come out, wherever you are!”
Ladybug panted as she slid down the steep side of the roof, away from the akuma. The battle had dragged on for almost an hour now, and it was one of the hardest. Hawkmoth was getting better at this, and Chat Noir… well, he hadn’t shown up yet. But she couldn’t focus on that right now. She pushed her concern aside. She couldn’t deal with that and the amount of pain she was in at the same time. She wasn’t sure exactly what the akuma’s power had been, but she could say that being struck in the back by it felt a lot like what she imagined being cataclysmed in the ribs felt like.
She had to get out of there. If Chat Noir wasn’t going to make it, she had to get Rena Rouge or, if that hit she took was any indication, Carapace.
She swung out with her yoyo, wincing at the movement, and swung down into the alley below, She stifled a cry as she landed, her knees buckling at the impact. What had initially been a blow to her back now felt like lightning cleaving through her muscles.
“M...Ladybug?”
Ladybug cringed back against the brick wall at her back, throwing her arms up to protect herself even as she grit her teeth at the pain of it. She glanced through her up stretched arms and nearly fell back into the street in surprise.
Of all the places she expected to see Adrien Agreste, it was not in a garbage-strewn alley with his hands fisted at his sides and looking for all the world like he was about to sprint into the street she’d just left behind to take on the akuma himself.
“What are you doing here,” she demanded. She climbed to her feet, hoping he didn’t notice the way she fully leaned against the wall for support. Before she’d been hurting, but now she was terrified. Adrien was here. Adrien was in danger. And she was in no shape to protect him. “You need to leave, Adrien. It’s not safe here. Please.”
He blinked at his name, as though surprised she knew it, like his face wasn’t plastered across Paris. His look of surprise faded, however, the longer he looked at her. Concern took it’s place, and he took a hesitant step towards her.
“You’re hurt.” It wasn’t a question.
“I can handle this,” she said. She had to be strong. It had been a battle in the beginning just to convince the city Hawkmoth’s akuma’s weren’t something normal law enforcement could handle. She couldn’t show weakness now. She couldn’t let Adrien, couldn’t let her city, down like that. “I just need a little luck.”
He looked like he was about to say something else, but she didn’t give him a chance to as she summoned her lucky charm. Adrien shielded his eyes as the lucky charm dropped down into Ladybug’s hands with a quiet rattle.
“Painkillers?”
“They’re for you,” Adrien said quietly. She looked up, surprised, but he just gave her an even look that told her he’d seen right past her bravado. “You’re too hurt to fight.”
“But…” But if they were for her, then she’d have to destransform to recharge Tikki. And there was no where for Adrien to go except into the heart of the fight. “I…I can’t.”
“You’re Ladybug,” Adrien said. He risked another step closer, closing her hand around the bottle. “You can do anything.”
His trust in her nearly broke her heart as much as it terrified her. Because Adrien was the one person she knew for absolute certain could never learn her secret.
“You can’t look,” she finally whispered, afraid to even say too loud what she was about to do. “I have to detransform and…recharge a bit. When I do, I won’t…I won’t be able to protect you, and…if you look, you’ll know who I am. You can’t look, Adrien. It’s not safe.”
She expected a riot of emotions, perhaps surprise and a little awe, like Alya.
But Adrien’s face was a calm mask of quiet admiration as he gave her a little bow and dutifully turned his back to her to face the opening of the alley. “Do what you need to do, Ladybug. I’ll keep you safe until you’re ready to go again. You have nothing to fear from me.”
Maybe it was the unwavering way he said it. Maybe it was the way he stood tall at the entrance of the alley, like nothing really would get past him. Maybe it was because she was a little in love with him. But she believed him.
So she used the lucky charm, and as she felt their magic start to work, she let her transformation dissolve.
Tikki practically fell out of the air, looking as dazed as Marinette felt. The kwami opened her mouth to talk, but froze when she saw Adrien over Marinette’s shoulder. Rather than say anything, Marinette simply nodded. They were trusting him. As though she could read her mind, Tikki stayed silent as Marinette retrieved a macaroon for her. The less Adrien knew about the miraculous and how they worked, the safer they’d all be.
“Where’s Chat Noir?”
Marinette flinched at Adrien’s question, but he hadn’t moved from his position.
“I don’t know,” she admitted. She was surprised by the hurt she felt saying it. “I called for him but he just…never showed up.”
“I’m sure he…he would have been here if he could have been.”
“I’m sure of that, too,” Marinette said. “He’s never let me down before. I’m just…I’m worried something’s happened to him.” The truth was, too many things could have happened to him. It wouldn’t be the first time he’d been manipulated by a senti-monster or a liar, not the first time he’d been trapped or hit by the akuma before she crossed paths with it. Or, her worst fear: that Hawkmoth would get to him and she wouldn’t even know until it was much too late.
Adrien’s voice sounded strained. “He’s a lucky guy to have a partner that cares about him so much.”
“I’m the lucky one,” Marinette said, half to herself. Tikki rose up from Marinette’s palm, still shaky but ready to go. Marinette nodded. “Tikki, spots on.”
The pink flash lit the alley as Marinette transformed. “Thank you,” she said. “It’s safe to look now.”
Still, Adrien hesitated a moment longer, as if to make sure. When he finally did turn around, that implacable mask was still in place. “Any time,” he said softly. “How are you feeling?”
“Better,” Ladybug said, surprising herself. The lucky charm had worked faster than normal medication. She was still achey, but she felt like she was ready to get back out there. “Thank you. I’ll lead the akuma away from here. When I do, I want you to run, ok? No arguing now.”
She must having imagined the surprise that flashed in those impossibly green eyes, for it was gone in an instant. “I’ll stay safe,” Adrien promised. “Good luck.”
Before she could think herself out of it, Ladybug leaned in and kissed his cheek. “Thank you,” she said again. And then she was gone, flying back to the rooftops and towards the sounds of battle.
“Looks like we were too late to the party, kid,” Plagg said as he swirled out of Adrien’s jacket. The kwami stretched as though he didn’t have a care in the world, but Adrien knew what concerned looked like on him.
“It’s not over yet,” Adrien said, but he hesitated, still staring after Ladybug.
“What?” Plagg asked, drifting closer. “What is it?”
“She said…” Adrien blinked and shook his head as if he could simply shake his thoughts into order. “She said if I looked…if I saw her without the mask, that I would know her.”
“Probaly, ah, just a turn of phrase,” Plagg said with forced nonchalance. “You know how explaining things to a civilian can be.”
Adrien stared at his kwami a little too long, a little too measured. “Sure,” he finally said. “Let’s go, then. Plagg, claws out!”

A Shy ‘Sparrow’: Chapter 4 - Changes
@starpony999
Author’s Note: Eyy, it's been a while hasn't it? Well here I am! With a new chapter too! I've written more for this story, and I'm getting a better idea of how long it'll be, so I might change the chapter count to a rough estimate once I've posted this.
Chapter Summary: The side effects of a broken miraculous are beginning to catch up with Marinette.
First | Previous | ???
A month since Alya posted that picture, and things aren’t going well. The amount of attacks has almost doubled, and Marinette can’t help but feel that Hawkmoth is targeting her.
If he is, it’s working, because she’s been getting worse, fast.
Alya now shows up at the bakery to walk with her to school each day, because no one wants her to faint in the middle of the street. If Alya is absent, then Adrien or Nino will come to get her.
Her parents have been sending her to a doctor for a while now. She was prescribed something a week ago, and it’ll be starting to take effect properly around… today, actually.
She and Alya arrive at school together as usual. What isn’t usual is that for whatever reason, the school’s population is buzzing in excitement about some girl who transferred in.
“Well, she sounds interesting…” Alya remarks, unsure. The stories seem off somehow.
Marinette hums. She’s not sure about this new girl either.
Her classmates are gathered around a desk in the front. Not tightly, just all facing that way and closer than they normally would be.
“...my sprained wrist hasn’t healed properly, because- Oh! Maybe I shouldn’t tell you. Well, I guess you all seem pretty trustworthy,” the girl looks around carefully. She’s dressed in a gray romper with an orange jacket. Her hair is tied into two ponytails in the front. They resemble sausages more than anything.
It’s certainly a… unique look.
“See, I’m actually Sparrow! Chat and I are dating- Oops! We didn’t want that to be public ye-”
“I don’t believe you,” Marinette cuts in. Another wave of dizziness passes over her, and she clutches at Alya gently, swaying.
Crocodile tears come to the girl’s eyes, “H-how c-c-could you say th-that? I work so much for th-this c-c-city, and this i-i-is the th-thanks I get?” Marinette collapses, falling to the floor. Her classmates gasp, and several rush to help her.
“Oh, so now she’s pretending t-to be sick so that y-you’ll all believe her-” New Girl sneers.
Everyone falls silent, processing what the new girl said.
“What,” Adrien snarls. She pales, but attempts to continue.
“W-well, she c-c-clearly is jealous, and is tr-trying to discredit me, and is looking for sympathy p-points by pretending to-”
“Oh, shut it!” Alya snaps, “Mari has been sick for weeks. I have to walk her to school everyday so that she doesn’t collapse in the street, and just because she didn’t believe your frankly outlandish tall tales, you’re saying that she’s faking it?”
“W-well no-”
“Really? Because that’s what it sounded like to me,” Adrien growls.
“I sh-should go. Jag-”
“Just leave.” Nino glares, “You aren’t welcome here.”
The girl makes her escape, and the class turns their full attention on their favorite pigtailed designer.
Max is muttering medical statistics to Rose and Juleka who are doing their best to revive her. Soon enough, she stirs, putting a hand to her head and groaning.
Both girls hug her, and Max sighs in relief.
“Maybe you should head home, Mari…” Alya hugs her.
“No, I’ll just go to the nurse first, if I need to go home, I’ll call Maman or Papa.” Marinette suggests, “You shouldn’t miss class.”
“Alright…”
After everyone wishes her well and she makes her way to the nurse. Of course, then she hears the sounds of an attack.
No break for her, huh?
Hurrying out the door of the school, she ducks into an alley to transform.
“Duusu, Spread My Feathers!”
Instead of the usual warm calming feeling of magic washing over her, it feels like searing fire. Every bone feels like it’s splintering and her muscles tense. She’s stumbling, but that is barely registered amidst the tidal wave of pain she is drowning in. She coughs, choking on nothing as her throat struggles to function.
Her back hits a wall, and she slides to the ground, falling until she’s nothing but a limp body on the ground, spasming occasionally.
She needs to detransform. She needs to detransform right this second.
Just thinking takes immense effort, so talking is out of the question. She’s relieved when she registers the sound of beeping from far, far away.
A voice echoes around her, something blue flying around above her, mumbling about medication.
“Wha’?” Nothing is coming into focus, but at least the pain is fading, even if she feels sore and utterly exhausted,
“I- I didn’t want to say anything, because it wasn’t completely certain to happen, but often, magic doesn’t mix well with medicine…” the blue thing chirps.
Kwami, she can barely understand French words, let alone identify… anything.
“Wha’?” Everything is swimming again, she still can’t move properly.
The blue thing rushes towards her - hiding, she thinks - as something dark lands in the alley.
“Good Kwami, what happened to you Ma- Miss?”
The dark thing crouches near her, and she does her best to repeat the blue thing’s - Duusu’s - words.
“...medzz...bad..reacshhun…” she manages.
“You had a bad reaction to your medication.” He - Chat Noir - repeats, looking for clarification.
She nods almost imperceptibly, trying to move upright but instead finds that her arms give out and she returns to the ground.
“I can take you home.” Almost as an afterthought, he adds, “Uh, where do you live?”
Marinette does her best to mumble ‘bakery’ and hopes she gets the message across properly. She’s entirely spent.
Chat Noir picks her up as gently as possible, and hurries to get her home without jostling her too much. He hands her off to her parents, doing his best to explain what she’d told him.
They nod, and her Papa takes her to bed while Maman calls the doctor. It doesn’t take long for her to give in to the exhaustion, falling into a restless sleep.
She wakes up a few hours later, feeling weak and tired.
“Duusu?” She croaks. The Kwami immediately flies up to her, looking relieved that she’s awake.
“Marinette! How are you feeling?” She’s uncharacteristically uncomposed, flitting around distractedly looking over her holder.
“Just… really tired. My head hurts, I’m kind of sore…?” She holds her head, staring off in space until something occurs to her. “The akuma! I can’t leave Chat alone!”
She stands quickly trying to get to her balcony, only to fall back onto her bed, feeling shaky.
“Marinette, that was hours ago. You aren’t well.”
“What happened?” She can’t really remember anything past transforming.
“It- I’m sorry. The miraculous uses some of your energy to transform, usually it wouldn’t be noticable, but… it’s broken. It’s trying to use your energy to heal itself, but that’s not going to work. The medication blocked that, but by transforming, you forcibly went against that… so it didn’t end well. My last chosen-” Duusu’s voice cracks, and she tears up, “Oh, Emilie, my poor little peachick…”
She shakes herself out of her mind after a moment, “Since you are younger, there was a chance that the medication wouldn’t have done anything, maybe even help, so I didn’t want to worry you…”
Marinette sighs. “It’s alright Duusu, it’s not your fault the brooch is cracked. Though, maybe I should be trying to fix it. How can I do that?”
Duusu pauses to think. This girl has proven to be very capable, and is certainly responsible. She’s ready to know about the Guardian.
“There’s a Guardian of the miraculous. They are responsible for taking care of and protecting the miraculouses. He is in Paris, that much I am sure of. He is the one who gave Chat Noir his miraculous, and he is in possession of Tikki. Together, they would be able to fix it.”
“Great!” Marinette cheers, “So just tell Chat I need to see the guardian?”
“...no. The Guardian is meant to stay a secret and it’s possible that Chat does not even know of their existence. If you were to out them, it would not look good for you. If Chat does know, he’s probably doing his best to protect him as well, given Hawkmoth’s goal. Telling him that you have to meet with the Guardian and Tikki? It wouldn’t be a good look.”
“Especially after I missed an attack…”
Duusu nods regretfully.
“Can I make sentimonsters for searching? To try and track him down?”
“I suppose. Depending on which Kwami they are the holder of it may not be as effective, but there’s no way of telling.”
---
The peahen heroine is transformed, out on patrol. Her sentimonster already healed the minimal damage from the attack. She’d rested enough earlier that she feels comfortable making another.
Touching another amok to her brooch, she allows the sentimonster to take shape. A dark crow forms in front of her, waiting for instruction.
She holds her hands out to let it rest. “Find the Guardian. Find Tikki. That’s all. Do your best,” she whispers, kissing its forehead and letting it fly away.
A Cat hero in the shadows hears the words and frowns.
That’s not right.
---
Author’s Note: Crows are predators to turtles, you know.
Did I come up with some magical nonsense as to why Marinette can't use medication for the sake of angst? Yes. Yes I did.
This story might be moving faster than you were expecting, but I never intended for it to be as long as With Time. I hope you enjoy it nonetheless!
Stay safe, and have a wonderful day and night! ☀️🌙

Will You Marigami Me: Marigami Week Day 2
Disclaimer: I don’t own ML.
Day 2 of @marigami-week 2020!
Day 1 | Day 3 | AO3 link
2. First Meetings
“– Adrien’s arriving today, and since that’s going to be his seat, this is going to be my seat. Get it?”
Kagami Tsurugi’s first impression of her new class is…not great. An unpleasant blonde dressed in eyewatering yellow and white – whose pale pink lipstick is not doing wonders with her tan skin, and Kagami is willing to bet that she considers herself some kind of fashion icon – is looming over a pale girl who looks like she’s of East Asian descent just like Kagami, with her jet-black pigtails and her softer nose ridge in comparison to the blonde girl.
“Who’s Adrien?” the pigtailed girl says. The blonde bursts into shrill peals of laughter, accompanied by the pale redhead next to her.
“Can you believe she doesn’t know who Adrien is?” the blonde says. “What rock have you been living under?”
Kagami turns to look at the redheaded teacher, waiting for her to use her authority and resolve the issue, but the teacher is just sitting at her desk and regarding the confrontation with an air of detached interest. Ah. A teacher who believes that children should solve their own problems. While Kagami might ordinarily respect that, this seems to be far from the first altercation that these girls have had, so why hasn’t the teacher spoken up and resolved it?
And Kagami was so hoping to go an entire day without making an enemy. Oh well. It’s hardly the first time she’s gotten on the wrong side of someone with an inflated ego. Before she can intervene, however, she’s beaten by a dark-skinned girl with reddish-brown curls, who’s sitting alone at the front desk in the other column of seats.
“Hey, who elected you Queen of Seats?” says the brunette girl, standing up and crossing her arms. The blonde sneers at her.
“Oh, look, Sabrina! We’ve got a little do-gooder in our class this year!” the blonde says. The redhead – Sabrina – giggles. “What are you gonna do, super newbie? Shoot beams at me with your glasses?”
The brunette rolls her eyes and heads for the pigtailed girl. “Wouldn’t you like to know. Come on.”
The pigtailed girl trips on her way down to the front, spilling her box of macarons everywhere, and her face flushes as she scrambles to gather them up while the blonde and her friend Sabrina laugh loudly. The teacher finally leans forward, but before Kagami can hope that she’ll finally speak on the matter…
“Has everyone found a seat?” the teacher says once the students are all seated. Kagami blinks. A girl was blatantly bullied in front of her and she’s doing nothing? And judging by the air between the two girls, this rivalry has been going on for a while.
Wait. No. It’s not a rivalry. To call it that would imply that they’re on even footing, and the blonde most definitely has the pigtailed girl under her foot, not to mention every other classmate who just sat and watched silently. No wonder the pigtailed girl has no confidence, if this has been a long-term thing. Well, unluckily for the blonde, Kagami is not in a good mood; not after losing her chance to join the most prestigious fencing teacher in Paris due to being late for her tryout to help an old man in a hideous red Hawaiian shirt being harassed by a group of older teenage boys. And as Mr D’Argencourt had rightly said, if Kagami can’t be on time for her tryout, how can she be trusted as a reliable student?
“If your friendship with this Adrien is contingent on you sitting near him, I fail to see how it’s particularly strong,” Kagami says, slowly approaching the blonde as one would approach a venomous snake. She pauses in front of the desk and makes sure to loom over the blonde just as the blonde had done with the pigtailed girl. Unlike the pigtailed girl, the blonde merely raises one perfectly sculpted eyebrow.
“Adrikins and I happen to be childhood friends, new girl number two,” she says. “And I wouldn’t advise getting on my bad side like super newbie just did.”
Kagami’s lips twitch without her permission. The blonde’s trying to come across as tough, but she’s really just reinforcing Kagami’s first impression of her: a particularly weak bully whose only power is some kind of influence that she seems to have over everyone. This action doesn’t go unnoticed by the blonde.
“You dare laugh at moi?” The blonde slams her hands on the tabletop. “I am Chloé Bourgeois, daughter of the mayor of Paris and the Style Queen herself!”
Ah. There it is. Kagami had been wondering how this Chloé had so much power. Allowing herself a small smirk, Kagami draws herself up and straightens her back.
“And I am Kagami Tsurugi, only daughter of Tomoe Tsurugi and heir of the Tsurugi family,” Kagami says. “I can match you in both wealth and influence.”
Chloé snorts, while her classmates start to mutter. “Wealth, maybe. But influence? I’m Paris’ darling!”
“No,” Kagami says. “You’re no one’s darling but the mayor’s, if what I’ve seen in this room is any indication. The only reason you have influence is because of him, and if he wasn’t in power?” She shrugs. “I, on the other hand, have worked for my prestige. I’ve won fencing competitions and plan to compete in the Olympics. I’m a model student. Everything I have apart from my wealth has been earned.”
The other students’ heads swivel back and forth between Kagami and Chloé, as though watching a particularly exciting fencing match. Except in this case, Chloé’s far from the trickiest opponent that Kagami’s dealt with. In fact, judging by the interesting shade of splotchy red that her face is turning, she seems to know very well that she’s not winning this bout, even if she’s not going down without a fight. Out of the corner of her eye, Kagami notices a tan boy with golden hair and green eyes appear in the doorway, then pause and frown at the scene that’s unfolding before him.
“I will destroy you, Tsurugi,” Chloé snarls, drawing Kagami’s attention back to the petty drama before her. “I will make your school life a living hell. You think they’ll lift a finger against me? My daddy can cut their funding just like –” She snaps her fingers, “– that. No one would dare side with some ugly Asian bitch with a super tacky haircut over me, so you may as well go and mingle with Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Kim Chiến Lê over on that side of the room.”
Kagami can’t help but laugh at the fact that Chloé thinks that she’s just made a terrifying threat. The pigtailed girl – Marinette – is watching the confrontation with wide eyes, so Kagami offers her an attempt at a small smile. From what Kagami’s seen of her, she seems to be a sweet girl, if lacking in self-confidence, but Kagami has plenty of self-confidence to offer. That is, if Marinette is willing to be her friend. Kagami’s not sure how to go about befriending someone.
“And how do you think my mother would react?” Kagami says. “She sent me to this school under the assumption that it’s the best one in Paris. If the quality started to slip, she would most definitely investigate. And while your father may be extremely influential here in Paris, I highly doubt that he could withstand an inquiry led by the national board of education. So, go and run to your daddy. Tattle on me. But I can promise you that if your inflated sense of entitlement affects my education in any way, your influence will disappear just like –” She copies Chloé’s earlier move and snaps her fingers, “– that.”
Chloé opens her mouth, closes it, then lets out a terrible little snarl and slouches back in her seat, crossing her arms. “Whatever. Like I give a damn about your empty threats. But I’m not moving, and you can’t make me!”
“Yes, I can!” Marinette stomps over to the desk and stops next to Kagami with her hands on her hips. “That’s my seat, Chloé. I ended up there in the first place because you made me, and I’m not playing musical chairs just because you want to sit with this Adrien guy, who’s probably just as stuck-up and snobbish as you!”
Chloé’s blue eyes glitter dangerously. However, Kagami’s pleased to see that this time, Marinette doesn’t back down.
“Watch how you speak to me, Dupain-Cheng,” Chloé hisses. “You’re nothing but a baker’s daughter. Don’t make me put you in your place again.”
Marinette shoots a look at Kagami and straightens her spine. “Well, as Alya said, “all that’s necessary for the triumph of evil is that good people do nothing”. And as Kagami said, if your father takes it out on the school, people will have to take notice! I’m not going to sit back and let you bully me any longer! Now, move. You’re in my seat.”
Chloé makes no attempt to move, instead regarding Marinette with a curled lip. It’s at that moment that the blond boy in the doorway makes his presence known by clearing his throat and, judging by the way Chloé squeals and almost launches herself out of her seat, this must be the Adrien she’d talked about. Her shrill shriek confirms this.
“Adrikins! You’re here! Come, I saved you a seat right in front of –”
“I don’t sit with bullies.” Adrien’s shaking but holding himself tall, and Kagami’s first impression is that this is someone who’s very much unaccustomed to standing up to people. Maybe Kagami can help him as well. Helping people is what friends do, right?
“Bullies?” Chloé gives an exaggerated gasp. “Moi? Adrikins, you don’t know what –”
“I saw everything, Chloé. If you weren’t a bully, then why did you call Kagami that? Why did you just threaten Marinette?”
“And she’s wrong,” Marinette says, chancing a quick sideways peek at Kagami. “Kagami’s not ugly. She’s super pretty. It’s a bit hypocritical for someone to call her ugly when they think that shade of lipstick matches their skin tone.”
Kagami slaps a hand over her mouth to muffle her laughter. She sneaks a look at Adrien to see if he’s going to disapprove of Marinette’s jab, but he thankfully seems to have tuned it out. That’s something that Marinette needed for her self-confidence, and it’s not even a particularly mean remark. And to be fair, Kagami probably wouldn’t be this close to losing control of herself and laughing if not for Marinette’s compliment. The fact that a gorgeous girl thinks she’s pretty too…
“No, Chloé, I don’t want to sit anywhere near you,” Adrien finishes. “Now, give Marinette her seat back.”
For a moment, Chloé doesn’t move. But then, with a wail, she jumps to her feet and stomps back to her usual desk, with Sabrina scurrying behind her. Marinette sinks down in her seat with a wide smile, joined by Alya a second later.
“Thank you,” Marinette says, directing her smile at Adrien. He grins and ducks his head.
“No problem. I just really hate bullies. And I never thought she was like that.” He turns to Kagami and adds, “Do you want this seat? I’m happy to sit at one of the back desks.”
Although she usually sits in the front, Kagami finds herself shaking her head. For one, she’ll be right across the aisle from a furiously scowling Chloé, which isn’t something she particularly wants to deal with all year. And for another, the dark-skinned brunet boy with the blue T-shirt who’s watching them from next to the empty seat seems like he’ll be much better company than the massive boy behind Alya, who gives off an air of very much wanting to be left alone, or the redheaded boy in the back behind the large boy, who’s doodling in a notebook. Kagami can co-exist with either of them, but Adrien seems to be a much livelier person than her, and he could potentially make great friends with this brunet boy in the front row.
“You take it,” Kagami says. Adrien’s face lighting up lets her know that this had very much been the right call, so she offers a small smile of her own in return and treks up to the large boy. “May I sit next to you?”
“Oh – uh, yeah,” the boy mumbles after a moment, so Kagami takes her seat beside him.
“Wonderful!” The teacher claps her hands like she’d done anything to help defuse the situation. “Now, for those of you who don’t know, my name is Ms Bustier…”
Kagami tunes out Ms Bustier after that, because Marinette turns to give her a radiant smile and mouth, “Thank you”. Kagami smiles back and ducks her head. Is this what it’s like to have friends? Hopefully, it’s not always this dramatic, although Kagami doesn’t think she’d mind drama if it means being Marinette’s friend.

Miraculous Rewrite: Origins Part 2 (Chapter 4)
Heyo, sorry for not updating... I’ve been working on uni prep, setting up a games documentation takes more time than you’d think... and I keep forgetting how long it takes me... Well, Alice finally runs into Adrien, gives him a rundown oh how things will work and makes it clear that she won’t put up with any misuse. There’s also Chloe... Chloe. Enjoy! Tagged - @blue-peach14
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After staying the night at Fu’s; apparently, he wanted to make sure I had all my paperwork and belongings sorted before I moved to Eva’s French dollhouse… I really hope it’s not like that… anything but that… I turned on the small tv and watched the news. The reporter from yesterday was updating the rest of Paris on the stone creatures that stood still around the city.
“The stone beings are scattered all over Paris, and for the time being, they seem to be showing no signs of movement. Police have cordoned off the areas around these beings.”
The screen switches to the mayor and the police officer from yesterday, he must oversee the Akuma cases. The mayor speaks, attempting to put on a brave face, however, he was glancing at the officer in fear and confusion, he has no clue on how to deal with this.
“We won’t stop until we find a way to get these people back to their normal selves, but for now, we’re not making much headway.”
The camera footage flips back to the reporter who stands next to a photo that worries me to no end, Ladybug and Chat Noir…
“Paris is relying on our new guardian angels, Ladybug and Chat Noir, to save us all. Our lives depend on them.”
Fu walks in from the other room, Wayzz following him. He looks at me, his eyes full of worry.
“Are you okay, Alice? You look unwell, are you perhaps worried for our young heroes?” I didn’t even realise I was clutching the tv remote so tightly that the plastic was bending, when did I…
“That’s just it, isn’t it Fu? They’re young. They messed up, and now they’re afraid of doing it again. Or at least that’s how Marinette feels, I have no clue about Adrien Agreste. I did my research, the only time he’s seen in public is at photoshoots. How exactly did you want me to help and watch a famous model with a bodyguard and strict schedule when I can’t even get close to him?”
“The boy needed freedom and has a pure heart; he was the perfect fit to Plagg at the time. As for young Marinette, I am sure she will pull though, she has a strong heart, she –“
I stand up and grab my bag. He looks at me, still worried but confident in his words. “Fu, how am I supposed to help them, watch them, guide them, if I can’t talk to them or explain why we threw them in the deep-end? I hope you’re right about them, cause while I agree they will be fine heroes, I can’t agree with the current path they’ll travel alone, I guess we’ll have to hope for some miracles.” I take an apple and grab my jacket and stuffing both into my backpack. “I better get to school before I’m late.” Fu chuckles at that.
“From what Evangeline has told me, you are not the most punctual person.” I frown at the accusation, I mean… not wrong but still. I wave him off and start jogging to Dupont.
As I make my way through the streets, I’m quite literally sent flying by a blond boy, damn moron, watch where you’re going! I grumble gathering my bearings and direct my glare at this oblivious idiot. He has blond pristine styled hair and soft green eyes, freaking out and apologising profusely… wait… I know that face…
“You’re Adrien Agreste.” The boy paled and started looking around before putting on a tight smile.
“Ermm… I think you’ve got the wrong guy miss, Adrien who. Never heard of him. Heh…Heh…” He laughs weakly, I roll my eyes at him.
“Oh, maybe I should call you Chat Noir then?” His face filled with fear. “Right Plagg?”
A blur of black whizzed out of the kids’ pocket and it’s green cat eyes stared at me, wonder, confusion, but finally acceptance. Plagg floated up to my face, mischief evident on the tiny god of destruction’s own. “So, you’re the old fart’s new vessel, huh?”
“Apparently, though he can go and find another body to take over for all I care, I’m me, not him. Understand that, and we’ll get along, right?” Plagg looked a little shocked but gave me a sly grin.
“I got it, you’re a lot more fun than the last few! The kid’s lucky!” Ironic coming from the embodiment of misfortune. Adrien then decided he had had enough with being left out of the conversation, and spoke up, his voice cracking slightly, prolly confused.
“Ermm… just who are you? And… how do you know who I… I mean you know?” Plagg butted in before I could open my mouth.
“This kid is the one who watches over the Miraculous like yours and Bug-Girl’s. She’ll make sure that if you do anything stupid, you’ll know about it.” He still looked lost.
“I’m an observer. I watch how you’ll use the Miraculous; use it wisely, then you keep being the wielder of the cat for as long as you are needed. Of course, you misuse it and I will take it away or punish you.”
 “P-punish?”
“I realise you are just a kid, a kid with too much responsibility, I get that. However, if you are to misuse this power, people can get hurt, and that will have consequences. I’ll understand any rashness and mistakes, such as this Akuma, but any intentional misuse or repeated actions that you refuse to own up to, I will make sure you understand the weight of your choices. Understood?”
He nodded, still a little worried, but it’ll have to do. I sigh. “Hey, Agreste. You don’t need to worry. Seriously, you may not be able to tell anyone about your double life, sometimes it’ll feel like the world is suffocating you… I know the feeling, but that’s why I’ve decided to reveal myself to both of you. To help you through this. If you want to talk, if you need help, just ask and I’ll try. HOWEVER,  I will say after I researched you, I will say this right now, I won’t accept the excuse of your sheltered life being the cause of any misunderstandings, you feel confused about anything that most would think is normal, you ask me or any friends you make at school, got it, I’m not gonna baby you, this is high school son, grow a pair!”
He stares at me completely shocked at my words, before quickly nodding again. I laugh at his quick nod and he starts chuckling too, before looking at his phone and alarm spread across him. “I’m going to be late!” Oh right… school.
“You’re such a strange kid. Who would want to be at school when he can stay at home all day?” Plagg darts back to his pocket peeking his head out, rolling his own eyes. We start jogging to school.
“You don’t get it, Plagg. I’ve had enough of being locked up at home by my father. I want to meet people, make friends.” He looks at me with a hopeful smile. “Learn about normal things! Go to a normal school like everyone else!” I roll my eyes at that, that place is far from normal.
“Arghhh… Uhhh, I think I’m feeling weak…” Plagg dramatically groans. Adrien stops running grabbing his bag, searching for something.
“You know what’s strange?” He pulls out a wedge of cheese that smelt horrible. Oh yeah… Plagg eats the stuff… poor kid’s gonna stink. “The fact that all you eat is this disgusting, rotten smelling camembert cheese, and I then have to smell like it 24/7. That’s strange.” He looks at me as if pleading for me to convince the tiny cat to eat something else. I shrug, you’re on your own for this one kid. He groans and glares at Plagg in disgust, but the god just stuffs his mouth with the cheese.
“If you want to be able to transform into a superhero, then stinky cheese is the deal, my friend!” Adrien sighs in defeat before continuing our jog to school.
We make it to the school’s steps, but we hear a beep from a car behind us. A tall, professional-looking woman leaves a nice-looking car and quickly paces towards Adrien. I recognise her from my research about the young cat holder, she’s Nathalie Sancoeur, Gabriel Agreste's assistant who manages his fashion work, his mansion, and takes care of his son Adrien. She must be here to take him back home… speaking of which, how the heck did Adrien enrol in the first place without a parent’s permission? As I’m about to grab the kid and get him to class, I feel the same dark feeling as yesterday, briefly, fleeting but just as dark.
“Adrien! Don’t do this! Your father will be furious!”
“Tell him you got here too late. Please!” Adrien turns around and runs into the school, I follow quickly after him and see Alya arguing with Chloe.
“How could you say that to Ivan? You’re the real Stoneheart!” Stoneheart? That must be what people are calling Ivan’s Akuma form.
“Ugh, so I’m the one who broke Sabrina’s dad’s arm, am I?” Fair, but still wrong, it’s not Ivan’s fault either. Also… Sabrina’s dad is the officer in charge of the Akuma cases… my belief in the Parisian police force is dwindling, this is why I want to be a P.I. Chloe the scoffs at the new girl and glares. “Just because your footage of those lame superheroes was shown on tv, doesn’t mean you have to get so high and mighty.” She blows her bubble gum at Alya popping it close to her face, luckily not sticking but I cringed at it and walk up Alya.
“You little…” Alya growled, about to retaliate before I stepped in.
“Ew… gross, Chloe that was so gross, you basically spat in her face, actually, I think you have a little spit on your glasses there Alya.” I say, however luckily there wasn’t anything on the glasses but Alya cringed at the thought, taking off her glasses and furiously wiping them, muttering how gross can anyone be. The glares and undecided look of the people around them all turned to barely hidden disgust at Chloe who was turning red and glared daggers at me. Alya after cleaning her already clean glasses huffed and walks off to the classroom. Chloe attempting to regain control taunted the girl.
“Lookout, she’s angry! She’s going to split the underwear and turn into a huge muscly monster!” She laughs obnoxiously.
“I’d be angry too; I mean what you did was kinda disgusting.” She spins back to me about to blow up at me, however, her face instantly lights up as she looks over my head.
“Hey, Chloe!” Adrien pipes up… oh no… I forgot… they’re friends. Chloe pushes past me and glomps the naive kid.
“Adrikins! You came!” Adrikins… oh, gods… I cringe at the two, Adrien noticing my face and his confusion is clear… did he just ignore all she did just now? Before I can call him out Chloe drags him to the classroom and the other students recognise the famous model and start rushing over. I slump in defeat and make my way to class.
Everyone is clamouring for Adrien’s autograph, and for once Chloe does something remotely good, albeit with less than pure intentions and makes a path to the classroom causing the fans to go back to their own classes. “Okay. This is your seat, Adrikins. I saved it for you. Right in front of me!”
“That’s creepy.” I blurt out, and Chloe growls at me.
“Well, no one cares what you think, Wattson!” Adrien glances at me in worry and unsure at who to support. I walk past him patting his shoulder.
“Get new friends, kid.” I say solemnly to him. His eyes widen at this but he turns to Chloe with a tight smile.
“Thanks, Chloe.” He turns to the Nino guy and tries to introduce himself othering him a handshake, but Nino just looks at him with distrust and ignores the hand. “Uh… Hey! Adrien.” The boy shows a model smile laced with nerves, but Nino didn’t react.
“You’re friends with Chloe then, huh?” He turns back to his phone. Hopefully, he’ll get the message.
I’m about to continue walking to my seat but I hear snide laughing coming from the front bench, obviously coming from Chloe and her lapdog Sabrina, I turn and see them sticking the gum that had recently been in Chloe’s mouth onto Marinette’s seat. Anger washing over me. “Hey! What the hell is your problem Bourgeois?!” Adrien turns around and spots what I’m yelling about.
“Hey! Chloe! What’s that all about?” He looks disappointed in her.
“The brat’s that sat here yesterday need a little attitude adjustment. I’m just commanding a bit of respect, that’s all.”
“No, if anyone here needs an attitude adjustment, it’s you! I thought you were gross, but this is just disgusting.”
“I am not disgusting!” She screams in my face, I pull out my phone and hit the emergency record button, I’d use during Eva’s interviews with her problematic clients. “You think you’re some sort of hero, I’ll get you kicked out of school, or maybe I’ll just tell my daddy to rethink your student visa.” I smile at her and she shrinks back. Adrien then interrupts sensing the danger this could lead to.
“Chloe, you think that’s really necessary?” I raise an eyebrow at that, it’s completely insane, but he’s still trying to keep his friendship with the girl. But said girl just scoffs at him, turning back with a hair flip and batting her eyes.
“Ah, you’ve got a lot to learn about school culture, Adrikins. Watch the master.”
Adrien then kneels down to Marinette’s seat, trying to pick the gum up with his pencil, only making it worse. I grab his arm trying to stop him from making it worse, till I hear a gasp. Great.
“Hey! What do you think you’re doing!?”
This day just keeps getting worse.

Chapter 12
When the van pulled up in front of a hotel, Marinette was excited. She couldn’t wait to see Adrien again and just have a chance to talk to him. As all of the girls climbed off, Marinette noticed something odd about where they were. Sure, there was the normal camera crew and everything, but something felt off about it. Marinette’s Ladybug experience helped her sense the danger, and she could pretty much pinpoint where all of the tension was coming from.
There was a man, tall and blonde that was almost silver, standing next to one of the main producers. He was wearing red pants and a white suit jacket. Marinette couldn’t see anything else of him, but she felt the need to stand up straighter and not talk while around him.
The group of girls were led to an open-air room that was organized with couches in the shape of a U with a coffee table in the middle. The color scheme tonight was all whites and blues, matching the logo of the hotel. Marinette ended up sitting on the very edge of the U, closest to the exit, which would make it easier to steal Adrien away. After a couple of minutes, Adrien walked in wearing a white suit of his own with a gold shirt that made him look more like an angel than a man. Marinette had to prevent herself from swooning.
“Evening ladies,” Adrien addressed them with a smile, though it seemed more tense than usual. “I don’t know about you, but I had a wonderful time today, watching you all learn and participate in something that I love to do. I’m excited to talk with all of you more tonight.” He raised his glass slightly and went to take a drink. Marinette noticed a slight shake in his hand that she was sure only she could see. The room was silent and Marinette considered stealing him solely to break the silence when Zoe stood up and did it instead.
“Adrien, can I steal you for a second?” Adrien smiled, though a strained one, and gestured for her to take his arm before they walked away. As soon as Adrien left the area, the girls began chatting. They had learned that sitting in silence during these times were boring and made the night seem even longer. The producers liked it when the conversation stemmed around Adrien, but there wasn’t much to talk about this early in the evening. Marinette went to set her drink down and was turning toward the ongoing conversation when—
“Excuse me, Marinette Dupain-Cheng?” Marinette started and looked up at the source of the voice. A nervous-looking producer was standing right behind her shoulder. He had leaned in enough to where no one else could hear what he was saying. Marinette herself had to strain her ears to understand his words. “Can you come with me for a moment?” Marinette didn’t speak but nodded and stood up, following the man down a hallway.
She had assumed she was needed for an interview, but why this producer was being so secretive, Marinette couldn’t figure out. They kept walking until they were almost out of the hotel. Right before the exit, the producer turned left and headed towards, according to the signs, where the indoor pool was located.
They stepped into the pool room, and sitting at a table in the corner was the man with the red pants and white suit coat. He stood to greet them as they approached. The producer deposited Marinette and then ran out of the room, not too subtly.
“Good evening, Miss Dupain-Cheng. Please have a seat.”
Marinette was on-edge. She itched to transform and have the confidence and reputation that Ladybug has. There was something about that voice that was oddly familiar, but it was too cold to be who she was thinking of. She did, however, do as she was told and sat down on the chair across from where he was sitting. She was facing the door out of the pool area and when the man sat back down she finally got a good look at his face.
It was Gabriel Agreste.
She recognized his voice because she had watched every interview he’s ever given. She was obsessed with his work and dreamed of interning and working at the Gabriel headquarters. She had never heard him speak so sternly before. He sounded angry, but controlled and it was enough to make the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end. Finally, she found her voice.
“Mr. Agreste. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
He looked at her with an impassive face. It made her wonder if he ever smiled, which gave her a jolt of fear for Adrien’s home-life. “So, you know who I am.”
“Yes sir, I’m a big fan of your work.”
“Well, I find that very interesting.”
Marinette frowned slightly and asked, curiosity getting the better of her manners, “What’s interesting about that?”
He stared at her for a beat and she felt the need to speak again. “I’m sorry, sir, but I’m confused. Is this about Adrien?”
Mr. Agreste continued to stare and it felt as though his eyes could see everything inside her mind. She wondered what he was thinking, but decided to sit quietly until he spoke again.
“No, this isn’t about Adrien. It’s about you, Miss Dupain-Cheng.” At that, he pulled out a file that wasn’t too thick. She absentmindedly wondered where he had been keeping it, but focused instead on the file and what Mr. Agreste was going to say next.
“What I have here, is a file that I have compiled on you. You have participated in a handful of my design competitions before and even won a few. You aspire to be a designer and are currently studying design in university, correct?” Marinette nodded, not daring to speak again. “Very good. Now, in reviewing your application for this show, I noticed many things that would have automatically eliminated you from the running. No one can explain why you are here, exactly.”
Mr. Agreste paused at that, almost as though he expected her to say something. Marinette was more confused now than when she started and after a beat, he continued.
“Now, I don’t mind you being in the competition. I even had you ranked in my Top 10 List, for your interest in design alone.” Marinette tried to act more surprised than she actually was. Though she was making a mental note to congratulate Plagg on his guessing skills. “But, due to current circumstances, things are going to have to change.”
Marinette couldn’t help herself as she spoke up again, “I’m sorry, sir, I don’t think I understand.”
Mr. Agreste gave a smile that would have curdled cheese. “No, I don’t suspect you would. This is about the ‘video game date’ you went on earlier today with my son.” He spit the words out like they pained him. “I was reviewing the tapes and noticed that you were wearing a shirt that is not one from my brand.”
Marinette felt her heartbeat speed up and her palms grew extremely sweaty. It suddenly came back to her. The conversation with Juliette the night before the date, the pressure from her to wear the shirt anyway. Marinette had forgotten with her running late this morning and had just put on the clothes she had laid out.
Marinette forced herself to stay calm and keep a straight face. She felt an angry swarm of butterflies swim around in her stomach, and she didn’t see how this man could be capable of love. All of those horrible stories that Chat had told her about his father suddenly made sense. Don’t let him break you, Marinette told herself as she took a deep breath in. Adrien needs me. If she showed weakness, she would fail her Chaton. Adrien needed her to brave his father, so that way he could too.
She looked Mr. Agreste straight in the eye and without seeming too hateful, explained. “I’m sorry, sir, but I woke up late this morning. I rushed out of the mansion trying not to get left behind by the van and the other girls. I threw on the first shirt and pair of jeans that I grabbed and ran out of the room. I didn’t even realize it wasn’t a Gabriel shirt until you said something just now.”
She paused and watched his eyes narrow, as if trying to see through her story to the truth. Apparently, he believed her. “Very well, but that does not explain why you brought a non-Gabriel shirt with you in the first place.”
Marinette smiled a little, actually having a whole-truthful answer to that question. “I brought it along for inspiration. I was allowed to bring my sketchbook with me, and all of the different personalities and different beautiful places that we’ve gone with Adrien, I wanted to be able to design and not stop my creativity. I brought that shirt along because it was one of my favorites that I designed and I like to examine it when I come across a creativity block.”
Mr. Agreste seemed to accept her answer but the look he gave her was still cold. “I believe you, Miss Dupain-Cheng. But, you need to know that this explanation doesn’t change anything about my opinion of you. You will still be removed from my Top 10 List and if it were up to me, you’d be removed from the show tonight. No one, not even an up-and-coming designer like yourself can be allowed to wear non-Gabriel clothing on this show. Adrien will be hearing about my opinion and what you did today promptly.” Mr. Agreste stood from his chair and gestured for Marinette to do the same. She stood and smoothed down her skirt, which had not taken very well to the salt in the air from the pool. “I suggest you head back to the girls now. Adrien should be giving away the next rose shortly, and the group may notice that you’ve been missing for all of this time.”
“Thank you, Mr. Agreste.” Marinette’s heart dropped a little at having missed her time with Adrien, but she walked away from Gabriel Agreste with her head held high and with a confident stride. She couldn’t let him see how much that bothered her.
She walked briskly back to the meeting area, remembering the way thanks to her Ladybug skills. She could feel Tikki shaking, in what she assumed was anger, as she walked and tried not to let any emotion show. There were no cameras in that room and no cameras currently in the hallways. She assumed that if Gabriel didn’t want the viewers to know about this conversation, then she wasn’t going to say anything either.
                     ----------------------------------------------------
Adrien was frustrated. This part of the date was only supposed to be 2 hours long tonight, and yet Adrien was stalling. He had talked with every single girl from the date except for Marinette. Every time he walked into the room where the girls were sat, she wasn’t there. Finally, he asked a producer, and they told him that she had been snagged for an interview and would be back soon. Apparently “soon” meant “never.”
Adrien huffed angrily out of the corner where he was sulking. First his Father shows up and begins changing things about the filming. Then, he demands Adrien wears a different suit because the one he originally picked out wasn’t “nice enough.” Then, the producers force him to actually drink alcohol to convince his dad that he’s doing so at every date. And now Marinette is missing. This night just couldn’t get any worse. All he wanted to do was go back to the hotel and end this whole evening with sleep.
“Adrien.” A quietly stern voice that used to make Adrien flinch spoke behind him. He turned, knowing full-well that he would be looking at his father. He seemed to be slightly content with himself and that scared Adrien more than anything else.
“Yes, Father?”
“When you get finished handing out your rose, and the girls leave, please come and talk to me here.” Gabriel pointed to where they were standing, which was just outside of the production crew’s set-up.
Adrien bowed his head and deflated, knowing that sleep wouldn’t be coming any time soon tonight. “Yes, Father,” Adrien tried not to let the disappointment color his voice.
“Very good. The girls are all waiting for you now.” Instead of responding, Adrien turned and wandered towards where the girls were seated. He rounded the corner, and noticed that all of the girls were indeed waiting, including Marinette. He tried to catch her eye, see how she was feeling, but she wouldn’t look up at him.
“Hello again, ladies.” Adrien smiled at them his best model smile. It felt like a fake smile, but all he cared about was whether the girls could see his hands shaking or not. “Tonight was wonderful, and I’ve loved being able to grow all of our relationships further through our conversations.” Did that even make sense? Adrien looked down at his hands and took a breath to hopefully help steady them.
“That being said...” Adrien paused as he reached down and grabbed the rose off of the table. He froze for a moment, not remembering who he had said he would pick. Finally, one of the producers caught his eye and mouthed a name. Adrien turned toward the girl sitting two to his left, “Lila, will you accept this rose?”
Her face lit up and she shot him a seductive look that made him sweat a little. “Of course, Adrien.” She took the rose from him as he stood to meet her. She gave him a hug that lasted longer than it should have, but Adrien barely even noticed.
He turned and addressed the other girls, “So, I guess I’ll see all of you at the cocktail party tomorrow night.” All of the girls nodded and smiled and Adrien froze once again before awkwardly walking away. He hid behind a corner and watched as the girls began chatting and standing up. Almost all of the girls congratulated Lila, but Lucie was the only one to address Marinette and ask the question he’d needed to hear.
“Marinette, what happened to you? One minute you’re being pulled away by a producer and then almost two hours later you show back up. Did you get sick or something?”
Adrien could just see Marinette give Lucie a ghost of a smile. “Or something like that.”
The girls walked out of hearing range before anything else could be said.
Once their van had pulled out, Adrien slowly made his way back to that corner, where his Father was waiting for him. As soon as he stepped into view, Gabriel began tapping his toe in impatience while staring at his tablet.
“How did it go?” Gabriel asked, not even bothering to look up from his tablet.
“It went fine.”
“Great. How are you enjoying the filming of the show?”
“It’s been fun, I guess.”
“Have you kissed any of them yet?”
Adrien blanched. “I’m sorry, what?”
Gabriel looked at Adrien then. His look was one almost like a joking parent, taking joy in their child’s uncomfortableness. “You don’t have to tell me if you’re embarrassed.”
“I--I’m not. I’ve kissed a few of them. Almost half at this point I think.”
“Very good. Now I want you to know that your well-being and progress on this show is not the only reason that I’ve come to visit today.” Adrien knew that, and it was this ulterior motive that made him nervous. “I have a problem with one of your girls, Adrien.”
Adrien was put-off by his Father’s boldness, but was too curious as to who and what to say anything.
“It has come to my attention that Marinette Dupain-Cheng is not here for the right reasons.”
Adrien’s heart skipped a beat. “What do you mean that she’s not here ‘for the right reasons?’”
Gabriel gave Adrien a level look before turning the tablet around. On it, was a resume, of sorts, with Marinette’s name on it. “It appears that she is only interested in the company and your connection to it,” Gabriel flicked through the pictures of Marinette wearing different outfits as he spoke. “She has participated in many of my design competitions, and even won a few. Most recently, she has applied herself to be an intern at Gabriel after she graduates university next Spring.”
Adrien was still in too much shock to say anything, but Gabriel wasn’t finished.
“It has come to our attention that she has actually entered the competition to win both yours and my approval to boost herself in the fashion industry.”
Adrien thought back on every interaction that he has had with Marinette. Granted, there hadn’t been many, but every one of them was sweet and fun and real. Adrien was having trouble believing that every one of them had been a lie.
“Father, what you’re saying can’t be true.”
“But it is. I request that you send her home. Tomorrow night. In front of everyone. The other girls need to see what happens to people who try to use the Agreste name to get ahead without my permission.”
“Father, I respect that opinion, but I really feel as though that is my decision to make.”
“But it is one you will make.” At that, Gabriel turned on his heel and walked out of the hotel.
                    ----------------------------------------------------
“Plagg, what in the world am I going to do?” Adrien was pacing his hotel room and pulling on his hair. He hadn’t showered yet, so the product in his hair made it stand up straighter and he was beginning to look a little disheveled.
“Why can’t you just talk to her?”
“Because she’s at the mansion and I’m here, Plagg.” Adrien said, just barely holding back the “duh” at the end of the sentence.
“Aren’t you the most important person on the show? Can’t you just make requests to talk with a girl whenever you want? If you want to clear the air, go tell a producer and have them pick her up and get her butt over here.”
Adrien was halfway out the door before he realized he couldn’t do it. He plopped down on his bead with a sigh. “I probably have that power, Plagg, but if Father hears about me talking with her privately, he’ll think I sent her home, or cleared up the air without any witnesses. He wants this big show, and as much as I know I’m not going to do that, I have to make it at least slightly believable, or who knows what he’ll do. After I talk with Marinette we can come up with a game plan and I’ll know what I need to do.”
Plagg seemed to think about that for a moment before he gave Adrien a pat on the knee. “You’re right kid. But when are you going to talk to her?”
“Tomorrow.” Adrien said confidently. “I’m going to grab her right before the cocktail party starts so that way no one can record it.”
Adrien heard Plagg chuckle and looked over at him, bewildered. “What?”
“You’re going to ‘grab’ her, huh?” Plagg asked with a mischievous grin.
Adrien blushed and pushed Plagg off the bed, though his snickering continued.
