Helloooo! First things first, I gotta say, I LOVE your writing! Anything you post I eat it up, even if the characters aren't my cup of tea you somehow make me a complete simp. Congratulations on your absolutely AMAZING work <3

Okok onto the real ask, tho! I was thinking gender neutral reader, with Sanji and Zoro? (Maybe Usopp if it tickles your fancy :)) Reader is like, very badass at first glance kicks ass easily and does it looking very cool. Leather jacket, maybe some cool tattoos and piercings, stuff like that.

But when they start getting to know them better they're like... A total dork??? A complete nerd??? They like roleplaying games like DnD, they know a bunch of animal and science facts for absolute no reason other then "it's fun to know about stuff :D" (also, fun fact, did you know there's a species of penguin that is like- 12 inches tall?? And they're blue???? They're called fairy penguins and I LOVE THEM-)

Intimidating Nerd

Sanji

He finds your intimidating nature so hot. SOOOOO hot.

He’s always fawning over you and desperate to give you attention. You hardly pay him any mind, but that just fuels him even more.

Sanji discovers pretty quickly that you’re not as intimidating as you appear (because he’s literally always watching you), but at first he doesn’t let on.

He does learn all about the topic you’re totally obsessed with, and uses that to win you over.

Not the type to call you out or gloat that he knows, he just drops random hints about it at first. Little facts, and when he sees you perk up he knows he hit the jackpot.

After a few mentions of it, you finally cave, and just totally info dump on him while he’s baking.

He just stirs the batter and hums along, only half understanding all of the things you say (he only learned enough to impress you) while you get louder and louder from excitement.

But your excitement doesn’t phase him, in fact it makes him giddy. He’s thrilled to see such a vulnerable and different side of you that not many get to see.

Zoro

Zoro is concerned at first that you’re all talk, but once you prove yourself in battle, he becomes pretty impressed with you.

Impressed becomes adoration, due to the look you have and the flirtatious words exchanged between you all.

He hears you occasionally speak about your special interest(s), and on island days he can usually find you in one of those weird stores he usually tries to avoid.

After you leave one, he sneaks in and asks the guy what you were in there for. He explains that he’s a crewmate of yours and is trying to find you something nice, but has no idea where to start.

He ends up picking out a cool piece of jewelry that has some hint towards whatever you love. That kind of merch that still looks cool, but fans know where it’s from.

Luckily, the guy is super helpful, and even explains a little bit about the backstory of the item he picked out (all of which goes right over Zoro’s head).

He leaves it on your bed in the bunkhouse. He doesn’t really know what to say or how else to give it, and when you see it, you know it's from him immediately. He’s the only one who knows that you like that thing, and you instantly put it on.

When he sees you again, he compliments the jewelry, to which you smirk and roll your eyes. “Thanks,” you say. “Some nerd got it for me.”

Usopp

He is so scared of you. Literally tenses when you walk in the room at first.

Yeah, you’re hot. But you could also definitely kill him in 5 seconds with your pinky. He’s seen you do it to stronger enemies in less time.

He doesn’t even try that boasting thing with you. He tried it once and you just raised an eyebrow at him. He got so flustered that he immediately shut up.

And then he brings up an old game he used to play, an old TV show he used to watch, an old comic book he used to read. And your entire demeanor changes.

At first he thought you were making fun of him or trying to scare him, but he can see real enthusiasm about it in you. And you like…know your stuff.

Suddenly you all are BEST. FRIENDS. You’re inseparable. You teach Luffy and anyone else who will listen about the lore. Most of it goes over Luffy’s head, but Robin, Franky, and even Sanji get a hold of the concept and become slightly interested.

Every time you stop at an island, the two of you saunter off together trying to find new merch or new updates about it.

Usopp loves having you around because he knows that you will always protect him and you can fight enough for two in battle, and you’re cool enough to always keep a conversation going with him.

AITA for not helping my twin brother because I was trying to impress my crush?

My (f12) twin brother D (m12) are spending our summer with our gruncle S (m OLD). He lives in this weird town where a lot of magic and sciency stuff happens. And my brother is obsessed with the mysteries behind it ever since he found this nerd journal. He is desperately trying to find the author.

And I am helping him. It's just that I have been falling in love with a bunch of boys over the summer. Some romances were fun, others a NIGHTMARE. Some gnomes and a boy, G (10) who would not accept a no for an answer. He's currently in prison.

G was obsessed with trying to get our gruncle's shack and summoned this demon B (m? VERY OLD) to get it but we beat him with our imagination.

So we found this laptop in a hidden bunker and D has been trying to find the password. I originally wanted to help him, gut I fell in love with this really cute puppet guy. So I told the puppet guy I'd make a puppet show. D was not happy, but I could help him find the right password after the show.

But D was apparently growing really desperate because he reached the password limit, so he ended up making a deal with B. And B possessed his body.

We ended up beating him and all, but B said some things that made me think I might be TA. And he left a very evil message for me to find, saying he would give D's body a grand finale by throwing it off the water tower and asking me if I want to join. So am I TA?

I've never posted before, but I'm going absolutely mental.

[SPOILERS FOR DIMENSION 20's FANTASY HIGH: JUNIOR YEAR]

So, first of all, stellar ep as usual, but for the last 6-ish hours something has been bugging me, and it just hit me like a tray of shrimp.

BLeeM sometimes references real-world things/places in campaigns, but for some reason that Turkey/Türkiye reference seemed Weird to me, not in the way that there's anything wrong, but it just seemed weirdly specific and random for what it was.

And then I realised. Ankarna (the dead deity's name) is very close to Ankara, the capital of Türkiye, which isn't that strange on it's own, but how close it happened from the Türkiye mention to then the name reveal--it was a thread. So, I pulled it.

Ankara (The Anchor)

Ankara (and Türkiye) has a long, rich, complicated history. Long story short-ish, the Greeks took it from the Persians, Galatians took it from the Greeks, and then the Roman Empire rolled in. And then some more shit happened, but that's not the point of this post. Right now, I just want to look at the name--specifically, its name in Classical Greek and Latin.

In Classical Greek, it was called Áγκυρα (Ánkyra), which ἄγκῡρα means 'anchor' or 'support'. In Modern Greek, 'anchor' is άγχυρα, which is sort of similar sound-wise, but not as close as in Classical Greek.

When it was part of the Roman province Galatia, the city was known as Ancӯra in Latin, again close to ancora (Latin for 'anchor').

[Unrelated side note for nerds, but the Latin angor sounds similar to anger, but it's a false cognate. It means suffocation, but also, in a figurative sense, anguish. And I think that's neat!]

Bakur & Ruvina

Because of the Ankarna realisation, I looked into Bakur and Ruvina's names, just to see if there was anything there.

Bakur supposedly means 'north' in Kurmanji/Northern Kurdish--if you trust Google Translate. Another Türkiye connection, Kurdish can be found spoken in parts of it. There may also be a connection in Arabic to 'copper', but I don't speak Kurdish or Arabic, so I couldn't tell you. Take my loosely researched info at your own risk!

Ruvina possibly means 'ruin' in Corsican. There's also results on various baby name sights for a connection to 'sun' or 'sunny, bright', possibly from Hindi, but I'm just a sad little nerd who doesn't speak Hindi, so again, I can neither confirm nor deny accuracy.

Also, just for fun, I ran Ankarna through Google Translate as well, and it came back detecting Swedish, supposedly meaning 'the anchors' which is interesting.

I wasn't able to clock what accent Nara has, nor do I know any Swedish people, but it sounded like she might be 'vague Nordic'. I may be way off, though. Also, again, I have no idea how accurate Google Translate Swedish is, but at the very least, the meaning lines up with the Latin and Classical Greek.

Why Does This Even Matter?

We've seen that gods can change based on those who support and believe in them, in addition to other factors. Maybe Ankarna lost or gave her followers to Ruvina/gave up her domain because Sol/Helio were looking to expand. Cassandra seems to be in their corrupted state again, so maybe the Bad Kids are able to bring Ankarna out of theirs as well. I have no clue. This is less of a theory and more of a 'Hey, my brain works like shit, but I recognize that from somewhere--Oh!' and now it's back to memory soup for anything that happened more than 5 minutes ago. So, passing the torch to someone who has a better memory than me: in the episodes we've seen so far, is there anything here worthwhile? Am I just a nerd? Ask again later, signs point to yes.

I just think it's interesting to possibly have the deity's name mean 'anchor' in a campaign where everyone is kind of off the rails/burnt out, but trying to hold on for dear life and succeed in order to keep everything they care about safe. Especially if we're taking it to mean the less common, more religious 'support' meaning. A deity that grounds, anchors, holds steady. Order to the chaos.

Cassandra is the deity of Mystery and the Unknown (shoutout to the Willy Wonka Experience), and it would be interesting if her spouse was that of Clarity and the Known. Not oppressive structure, but support, grounding. Not to quote Kristen's parents (ew), but there are some things we do know.

I'm truly excited to see where the rest of this season goes. The effort that the Dropout and Dimension 20 team put into every season and show is absolutely incredible and such a joy to be able to watch. They're such a lovely group of creatives and forces of positive action in the world.

ALSO WHY ARE THEY 24 POINT STARS? What's the significance???? 24 hours in a day??? 12 months? Some smaller variation but it's just the spikes go in all directions???? Why 24??? WHY 24??????

Note: Using Türkiye because the country officially changed it's name from Turkey back to it's Turkish name Türkiye, and a lot of people are not aware--which is fair because this is a big world with a lot going on all of the time--but it's important to respect that change!

So, there is this gothic church near me irl that I am obsessed with because…I’m a Soulsborne nerd and it looks like a boss arena + gothic architecture makes me feral. Anyway, I finally decided to read about the patron saint of this brooding Catholic establishment….and big shocker, it was Saint Elizabeth. I think anyone familiar with Catholic saints would know her peripherally but I got more curious than usual for some reason.

Cough, cough…the Soulsborne nerd in me found some details about her life interesting.

Random weird Bloodbornesque details follow:

Apparently when Elizabeth was a kid, she was betrothed to another kid named Ludwig, who was the son of a guy named Landgrave Herman. It made me laugh because I was like, “Hey…Landgrave Herman sounds like a Soulsborne boss.”

But THEN, I got curious and looked up what a landgrave was because that sounded familiar. Apparently it comes from the German words “land” and “graf” which…of course mean “land” and “count” in English. Hmm.

So, a landgrave was a count that had jurisdiction over a territory. Cool.

That’s what this Herman guy was in old school Germany.

Anyway, back to Elizabeth and Ludwig.

St. Elizabeth, a Hungarian Princess, was married to Ludwig, who was the son of Landgrave Herman of Thuringia. Ludwig was armed as a knight at the age of 18, and was also crowned as a marshal of the Holy Roman Empire by Emperor Frederick II. Frederick eventually had Ludwig come along for the Sixth Crusade to the Holy Land and Ludwig died of the plague shortly afterwards while on the journey. He was 26.

Elizabeth then dedicated her life to becoming a caretaker until she died at the age of 24. She actually had regained her dowry and built a hospital, so because of her kindness to the poor and sick…she was marked as a saint four years after her death. Ludwig also became known to the German people as, “Ludwig the Saint.” So, that’s why there’s a bunch of Saint Elizabeth churches…and yeah, Ludwig got semi-sainthood for some reason.

ANYWAY, this whole bit of history gave me some headcanon ideas about, guess what…Bloodborne. Thank goodness for Catholic brochures, am I right?

So, what if Hemwick, which I’m certain has Germanic roots, was a territory once connected to Cainhurst, and by connected I mean owned. (This is not the first time this has been discussed at all, but I wanna delve deeper).

We all know about the bridge that links the two, yeah? Hence the ancient theory that they were always linked and blah, blah. You guys know.

But imagine if Cainhurst kept a landgrave in charge of Hemwick, and the two territories shared cultural connections under this authority…like forced connections?

Hemwick has that agricultural structuring, so maybe this is where Cainhurst grew their….crops…because….small island constantly cold and snowy? I have no clue, but let’s just say the landgrave ruled and taxed the people living in Hemwick with a certain amount of kilograms from their crops every year, and this was distributed to the monarchy. The close tie between the two areas was therefore largely economical but was held up for years, allowing generations of people to remain dependent on each other. Kind of.

This is where I like to imagine certain Hemwick (Germanic) influences started affecting Cainhurst and why the mounted knights carried “Reiterpallaschs” and why the character with the most German name (Ludwig) has that same mounted knight connection—maybe suggesting he was from Cainhurst, OR…gasp…Hemwick itself?

Oh hell, maybe he was a noble and the son of one of the landgraves. Now you guys see why I info-dumped all that stuff about Elizabeth and Ludwig…and Herman.

(By the way, Annalise’s name is German as well, like specifically the Germanic variant of “Annalisa.” Hmmmmm).

Guess who ELSE has a German name? ADELINE. SAINT ADELINE.

No, don’t panic. I am not trying to say that Ludwig and Adeline were married and Ludwig “died” of the plague on a crusade while Adeline stayed behind at her hospital to earn her sainthood, but you guys get why I am focusing on this. (Maybe Ludwig, in a sense, was even granted sainthood by Laurence after he died?)

Anyway, the point is, I think there are a lot of characters in BB that could have come from Cainhurst’s little agricultural offshoot and maybe it was very Germanic, very influential for the nobles, thus explaining some of the German influences in Cainhurst. Maybe Hemwick had a very equine-centric culture, maybe their farming scythes inspired a certain hunter whose name was quite literally “German” lol.

And maybe when the Church took over, Hemwick became something so terrible (like we see in the game), that nobody could even remember the quaint farm town it used to be. Grain silos were turned into charnels and the unwanted bodies of Yharnam were dumped there in heaps to be burned or buried or harvested for organs. Maybe the Cainhurst massacre brought in a new wave of corpses given entirely over to the production of bone ash because the nobles had unique characteristics being Vilebloods?

What was once a beautiful village with commercial links to Cainhurst and the local core of every harvest season, became a harvesting ground for the dead. How poetic.

Kyojuro General Headcannons

Sorry for the inactivity, I only just got settled into my uni dorm yesterday so I was super busy. Struggled to keep this general for him bc I am absolutely down bad for this man. Enjoy ^^

Word count: 900~

Everyone knows that Kyojuro is a foodie but rarely does anyone consider the actual ramifications behind that

First of all, not only does he know the best food in town, but he knows how to get as much bang for your buck

Can and will pull you away from the main marketplace and lead you to a small store where they serve better okonomiyaki for the same price as the one in the main market

Secondly, he hates coffee

This dude is already energetic as fuck, he doesn’t need extra caffeine

Kyojuro once drank coffee because Mitsuri bought it for him (he was too nice to say no)

Next thing everyone knew, Kyojuro finished three piles of paperwork, cleaned the entire house, built a new shed in the yard, and fixed the neighbour's fence

Third, he is one of the BEST people to eat with

Do you eat too quickly or slowly? He won't judge at all!

Stuffing your cheeks while you munch on your food happily? He thinks it cute!

Eating your food in a particular order? Won't ever disturb you about it!

Kyojuro knows better than anyone that people can get insecure by their eating habits, which is why he does all he can to let everyone eat comfortably

Truly values that everyone should eat because food is fuel and how important it is to enjoy how or what you eat

Food is his love language

The one thing Kyojuro won't stand is if you hold cutlery weird

If you grip your utensils with a whole fucking fist he might actually get up and walk away

He can't STAND that shit

While on the topic of insecurities, Kyojuro has some of his own

He won’t show it but Kyojuro’s self conscious about how visible his excitement is

Kyojuro’s smile is 98% of the time genuine, but he tries to give off the impression that people staring at him isn’t bothering at all

The stares he gets from talking, eating, or simply existing in public with his winning smile and his eye-catching clothing makes him feel exposed

Mainly because he knows that a decent portion of the people don’t have good intentions with their constant gaze

Kyojuro doesn't like talking about it because he doesn't want to change; he loves himself the way he is

He just wished that others were more understanding

On a more wholesome note, due to how long Kyojuro and Tengen have been friends, they both keep secrets from you

They say it's for a good reason and you believed them, until you found out that one of those secrets is that Kyojuro knows how to breakdance

"That was so long ago! I have not practised in so long that I fear I may injure others or myself... Perhaps another time?"

He is kinda embarrassed about it, mainly because he has a slight case of performance anxiety

Which speaking about performances, Kyojuro LOVES the performing arts

Theatre, films, dance, music, fights and battles, you name it

Kyojuro is always to find the beauty and appreciation for them, and they always get his blood pumping

But he's also a history nerd, don't get me wrong

"I have learned something new today! Would you like to hear about the empty fort battle strategy? I have found a tale of it in this book, it's quite clever!"

Kyojuro loves learning about new things, and sometimes just needs to vomit info about his favourite interests

Though it goes without saying that Kyojuro would without a doubt do the same thing, so feel free to ramble about what you like as well!

He thinks its entertaining just listening to you and he will be sure to ask you questions

Seeing you happy makes him happy :)

But even a well rounded guy like Kyojuro has his own weaknesses

hi! i’m user ames tattooine, and i’m gonna go over how to cut footage out of a scene. i’ll talk about rotoscoping—what it is, its history, and how to mask with the rotobrush successfully. i will also briefly go over how to use the pen tool to mask in after effects.

though this is pretty comprehensive and info-heavy already, there are still things i don't go over! but it should be a guide fit for beginner-intermediate after effects users.

YOU WILL NEED:

adobe after effects (minimum version cs5 / anything released after 2010)

basic knowledge of the interface and workflow, including but not limited to: compositions/precompositions, keyframes, and how to use brush tools

time. a lot of it

patience. more of it

also, before you click "read more," please note that this is about 3000 words long. definitely recommend viewing it in your browser. with housekeeping out of the way, let's go!

WHAT IS ROTOSCOPING?

very simply put, rotoscoping is a tracing technique. physically, it’s a little like using a selection tool on video. conceptually, things are slightly different, and that’s due to how it was meant to be used—but like many artistic tools, rotoscoping was transformed by contemporary artists / editors / animators / etc to become the versatile thing it is today. for mainstream giffing and video editing purposes, it is most often used as a way to mask footage out. see:

UNDERSTANDING ROTOSCOPING

the main thing you need to understand is that rotoscoping was meant for animation. not masking, not giffing—hand-drawn animation. in its early days, animation was clunky and generally unnatural-looking; not due to stylistic decisions about motion, but because artists were mostly guessing at how a movement would be divided into frames between point A and point B of any given movement. then, in 1915, two brothers named max and dave fleischer stuck a projector to a table, attached it to a car light, and beamed that light onto a block with tracing paper attached. they’d then take the image produced onto the tracing paper, trace out the figure (in the first case, dave dancing on top of a roof in front of a white sheet), and repeat this frame by frame to eventually trace an entire scene. the animated character would be drawn over / match the traced figures, and bam, animators suddenly had a HUGE shortcut to imitating real life movement in drawn scenes. (or, more accurately, only max and dave did, at least until the patent expired lol)

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR ME??

well, maybe not much if you don’t care to nerd out like i do, but it should absolutely inform the choices you make re: scene selection. dave and max used a white sheet for contrast and added a car light to their apparatus to enhance that contrast when they were tracing. if you try to rotoscope a scene that doesn’t have much contrast to it, you may not come out the other end with much success.

but remember: the tool wasn’t created so that you could cut your blorbo out of a scene, it was so that artists could trace movement for funky and weird animated characters in the 1920s. over time, and as tech advanced, people realized that if they completed half the rotoscoping process, they would have an isolated scene from the original footage. aka, they could mask out background footage. sprinkle in a little web 2.0, accessibility and increasingly easy use of tools from the mid-90s onwards (and the implementation of the rotobrush tool specifically after 2010), and we have a fascinating study of how tools can be transformed from their original use to do things that are different but equally valid. and yeah—2010. it’s mind-boggling to think about the leaps and bounds we’ve made with editing tech in the last 10-15 years alone. i digress.

ROTOSCOPE =/= ROTOBRUSH

so here’s where you might be like, jesse what the fuck are you talking about dot jpg. i’ll try to be concise: rotoscoping is the method. rotobrush is ONE of the tools you can use to rotoscope. i have a little issue about terminology that i won’t get into, but what people want to do in gifsets and video edits with the rotobrush is MASK. they are using the rotobrush to mask away footage, the same as if they used tape to cover up sections of a canvas. it’s easier, however, to think of it in the inverse—taking specific footage out, rather than snipping background away. imagine i have gingerbread dough, and i want to cut it into stars or various shapes. one thing i could do is take a knife and a stencil and physically cut out my shapes; another thing i could do is use a cookie cutter. the rotobrush tool is like a cookie cutter if it was driven by machine learning, involved way too much math and programming for personal comfort, and also was incredibly inelegant. the former method can be done using the pen tool, which is more time consuming, perhaps, but it lends itself to accuracy because it’s all done by you, the artist. i will be going over both methods.

THE ROTOBRUSH METHOD

fucking finally! we’re in after effects! first thing of note: my interface looks like this. yours, unless you also went through a sony vegas envy phase in 2015 and then modified your existing cs6 interface to be as inconvenient as possible, does not. don’t worry about it—the tools you need are located in the same place, and if ever i use a panel you can’t find, just click “window” at the top (both in mac and windows) and click what you need there.

step 1: select your footage, and be selective. and boy, do i mean be selective, or else you are in for a world of irritation. you want a scene that has naturally high contrast between your subject and your background. you want a scene that doesn’t have erratic movement, or if it does, you need to have the frame rate to support that movement. similarly, your background shouldn’t have too much movement either.

(what is erratic movement? well, let’s say your footage is 24 fps, and a character moves their arm between frame 0 and frame 12, or half a second. if the arm is moving incrementally throughout all 12 frames, or every 2 frames, that’s workable! but if you have a still image for frames 0-3 where the character’s arm is in one position, then another still image for frames 4-6 where the character’s arm is in a vastly different position—that’s erratic movement. after effects will not process that easily.)

if you’re masking out footage of a human (or humans), then for your own sanity, choose a scene that doesn’t have a lot of flyaway hair. finally, you probably don’t want a scene that’s too long! for this tutorial, i’ve got this shot of my baby boy.

notice how he’s dressed in dark clothing against a very light background? how his hair is mostly flat to his head, and how there’s nothing really that could have erratic movement? the background is a little busy, but it doesn’t seem like anything that’ll mess up the rotobrush’s calculations. as a bonus, the subject is relatively large and details around the edges aren’t too detailed! this is the kind of footage that’ll give you an easier time.

note: when i say “calculations” btw, i really do mean calculations. the algorithm takes the brush tool set to “constant” and predicts “edges” based on things like contrast between pixels, relative position of where the brush was used, etc. this is why it can be really convenient, but also why it can be prone to error. as i said: inelegant.

step 2: isolate the scene in a separate comp, whether that be through creating a separate composition manually or just precomping your existing one. the key thing is to have workable start and end points that automatically pop up when you enter the layer so that you don’t have to wait hours for each unused frame to load. this is what i’ve got now:

step 3: enter the layer by double clicking it in your timeline. you should see a separate panel pop up at the top here…

and what looks like the entirety of your footage here.

fret not! this is simply how layers work in after effects: they’re non-destructive, so you can add modify it to your heart’s content, and the original footage will not change. kind of like smart objects in photoshop, if you want a comparison. that is to say, yeah, in this layer, you DO have the entirety of your footage; in your composition, however, you’ve cut away all but 3 seconds of it. the point of step 2 will be apparent in one second when you do step 5.

step 4: equip the rotobrush tool. that’s the blue icon here on your tool bar (turns blue when you equip it).

step 5: go to the beginning of your composition and vaguely trace the outline of your subject INSIDE the footage you want by clicking and dragging (like any other brush tool), like so:

the line doesn't have to connect, mine just does. you’ll notice that the "rotobrush and refine edge" effect is automatically applied, and if you zoom in on the timeline from step 3, you’ll also see that the start and end points of your workspace have been automatically set to fit your composition.

after you release your click-and-drag, you should see a pink outline appear around the selection.

you can change how you view your selection by hitting the buttons down here to toggle different alpha view settings. and if you didn’t know this already, alpha means transparency. i personally like switching between the pink outline and the alpha overlay setting—the former makes it easier to see the smoothness of my selection, and the latter makes it easier to see if i’m missing footage / provides a starker contrast.

step 6: refine the initial selection. if you have experience with tracking, you can think of this as a “master frame” where you’re defining the parameters that will go on to be approximated for the rest of the footage. reminder that you are manipulating an algorithm when you use this tool, so you want to feed it data! this means clicking and dragging to collect any missing footage, or holding option / alt while you click and drag to remove footage. if you see jagged lines (like around his hair here), you can make it smoother by tracing inside the subject around the area and removing footage from the outside around the area—basically, telling the algorithm that This Is Where The Edge Is And I’m Moving Around It.

step 7: click play and let footage propagate. once it’s done, it should preview and look something like this:

if you’ve done everything right so far, then your outline shouldn’t be jumping wildly around or anything—for the most part, it should stick to a good 80-90% of the footage you want! the more solid foundation you have that doesn’t need (much) fixing, the smoother the mask is going to be.

step 8: refine the “problem” frames. you can click through frame by frame and see where things go off the rails. for me, it’s anakin’s right (so my left) shoulder. basically repeat what you did in step 6 and add / take away footage as necessary to refine the edge. VERY IMPORTANT TO NOTE WHEN REFINING: the algorithm calculates edges FORWARDS. that is to say, if you make a change 2 seconds in, that change is only going to make modifications from that 2 second point onwards. it will not make a change backwards, meaning that if a problem starts to show up, you need to fix it from the root onwards and teach the algorithm that This Is Where The Edge Is. if you don’t do this, then you will end up going backwards frame by frame fixing the same mistake over and over again, and it will look wonky because you will redraw in different places. i have had students do this and spend hours in misery. be patient: work from the start and fix as you move forward frame by frame! don’t jump forwards and backwards if you can help it.

step 9: fiddle with the effect settings. now that you’ve basically gotten your mask as neat as possible, you can play with the actual effect itself. just quickly, i’ll explain what i think to be the most important things (and the other settings, you can experiment with on your own):

version: 2.0 is their latest and ostensibly “most improved” version from the 2020 update, though if you don’t have the hardware that can take it, you’ll end up propagating frames for Hours. version 1.0 is perfectly adequate, and at times even more efficient than 2.0. up to you!

invert foreground / background: select the footage around your subject rather than the subject itself. can be very useful!

reduce chatter: chatter is the shakiness of your outline from frame to frame. when things get ugly—say, when you use the refine edge tool—is when your outline is jerking around every frame, seemingly unable to find an edge, like so (to the extreme—yours will likely be smaller twitches):

(also, this is me warning you right now. if you use the refine edge tool, you will triple your workload trying to actually refine it, and it will still look weird. if you insist on using it, be sure to work with a tiny brush size and stick as close as you can to the edge of your selection. this thing sucks and does not behave like it does in photoshop. LMAO.)

for the luke gifs, i had my feather at 10, my contrast at 90, my shift edge anywhere between 10 and 40%, and reduce chatter set to 100. these will vary greatly depending on the look you’re going for and also how neat your existing selection is. (at vague claims like this, i often hold a blinking neon sign at my students that says "REMEMBER MARSHALL MCLUHAN? THE MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE? FORM AND CONTENT ARE INEXTRICABLY LINKED? CONSIDER THAT AND BE PURPOSEFUL IN YOUR DESIGN CHOICES PLEASE")

overall, the effects controls you see are very much like the select and mask feature in photoshop! you can play around with it and see what the other settings do, but those under roto brush matte are the main ones imo. and that’s all there is to it! you can render out your composition, or you can nest it in another composition if you’re working all in after effects, or whatever. for those who are slightly more advanced in ae: i wouldn't recommend using twixtor after masking to slow down the footage (if anything, risk the compression and add twixtor before, then render and import back and mask), but you can definitely adjust the time keyframes without impacting the quality of your selection. or you can sit and admire your genius and the power of c++.

THE PEN TOOL METHOD

this method is less a pain in the ass and more just.. very tedious. also jsyk, it works better with animated content (cartoons, anime, etc) and less so with live action just because of like, hair. i totally recommend being in a discord call with friends while you do this method because it is an absolute vibe and distracts you from how mind-numbing and boring editing actually can be lol

step 1: select your footage, and be selective. maybe not as particular as you had to be for the rotobrush method, but it should still have mostly the same elements. erratic movement isn’t so much an issue. i’m using the same scene as above for convenience.

step 2: isolate the scene in a separate comp, whether that be through creating a separate composition manually or just precomping your existing one. this is mostly for workflow reasons, but some people hate working with a lot of compositions, so it’s up to you if you want to work in the original composition with your whole footage.

step 3: duplicate the layer. you should have something like this now:

step 4: equip the pen tool, highlighted in blue here (turns blue when you equip it)!

step 5: on the top layer, create a mask around the very edges of your subject, starting from the beginning of your selected footage. you should end up with something that looks like this. i wouldn’t bother with curving your lines, just because it can be harder to move around (especially when you’re making video edits and masking out action sequences and whatnot). if you toggle the visibility off and on your bottom layer, you’ll see that you’ve masked out the rest of the footage, and everything else is transparent. woo!

NOTE: if you haven’t already, go to your preferences and make sure that this is toggled off. you want to be able to add and delete vertices at will without changing the mask path in previous frames!

step 6: hit “M” on your keyboard, or use the dropdowns on the uppermost layer to reveal the mask 1 dope sheet.

step 7: create a mask path keyframe at the first frame by clicking on the stop watch. your station should look something like this:

step 8: go forward frame by frame until the image changes. this may be by one frame, two, or sometimes three.

step 9: deselect your layer, then select it again. the mask outline should change from square vertices to circular ones.

step 10: click and drag to move the vertices so that they align with the edge of your subject again. feel free to zoom in and out as necessary! you’ll notice that keyframes are created automatically when you make changes, so don’t worry about manually inputting them.

repeat steps 8 to 10 until you’ve finished :) this is why it’s time consuming and annoying :))

bonus options: you can shift the edge of your mask by fiddling with mask expansion. mask feather will feather around your mask, and mask opacity will change the transparency of the footage outlined inside the mask. less sophisticated than the roto brush matte settings, but they work great!

annnd 3000+ words later… that’s it! that’s how you cut footage from a scene using after effects. i hope this was informative! if you have any questions, feel free to send an ask to usergif.

Context: I (17m) was in class when the mayor’s daughter (S) asked me to help her cheat on a test. I was shocked as I’m a nerd and loser and the quarterback (J) wouldn’t consent to that as there is a hierarchy at the high school.

Another kind of friend, let’s call her G, ratted us out and S and I got to talking.

Later that day S invited me on a study date to where all the cool kids hang out, which I was gonna go to but when I got there, J was outside. It did not end well for me.

S found me the following day and she, my friends and G planned a prank on J to teach him a lesson.

Something happened after the prank that I can’t tell you directly because I am fucked if they find out and I have to go to jail. We didn’t mean for it to happen. It was an accident…

Now the high school is so much better and I’m wondering if what happened was actually a kind of good thing? G called it an act of god when it happened. But she’s fucking weird so I don’t know.

hi friends!!! it is no longer the weekend, but here we are! I'm 40k+ words into this fic and i'm realizing anything i write will kind of spoil where this fic is going, sooooo here is a snippet of the beginning!

Steve is trying so hard not to roll his eyes, but it’s getting increasingly difficult to do as his English teacher explains the project that’s going to end up being 40% of his grade at the end of the year.

A goddamn pen pal program.

His teacher is so excited about it too, and that makes it even harder not to roll his eyes.

This pen pal thing is a sure-fire way to get the teenagers who don't typically have lots of time to write long papers (the musical theater kids, the marching band nerds, the jocks, the freaky dance recital girls who can fit their legs behind their heads) to hone in on their writing skills, or so she says.

He was suspicious when he started his senior year with most of the senior guys on his basketball team in his English class and he was so right to think it was weird because they're trying to run an experiment on them.

How can the teachers of Hawkins high get their jocks more involved and more enthusiastic about school? Let's stick them with a year long writing assignment. What could possibly go wrong?

Steve can feel the insubordinate urge to just not even pick up his assignment on the way out the door, but he really can't afford to fail this class. He barely passed all of his classes last year and he has to keep his GPA at a C average to stay on the varsity basketball team this year. He thinks he can deal with writing to some nerd from another school for a few months.

He doesn't look at the assignment until a couple weeks later when Miss Chandler reminds them that she'll be conferring with the English teacher from the other school to make sure everyone in the class received their first letters soon.

He pulls the crumpled folder the assignment came in from his backpack and opens it. There's a grainy picture of the marching band attached and he's guessing his pen pal is somewhere in that picture. Great.

There's a sheet that explains the project. Even the rubric makes Steve roll his eyes.

This project is worth 40% of your grade... You must submit your first letter no later than Monday, October 28... All subsequent letters should be submitted on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month. Letters from the sister school should arrive by the following Friday. At the end of the year, you must have sent at least 10 letters to your pen pal...

Yada, yada, yada.

Behind that sheet is a letter introducing his pen pal.

There's an identical sheet that Steve's supposed to fill out and send back with his first letter.

He has no idea what to write for this first letter since he knows basically nothing about him. He knows he does D&D like the kids he babysits for, which is something to go off of at least. Maybe he can get Dustin to write something nerdy that Eddie will understand.

He does actually end up talking to Dustin about the assignment and he tells him a line to put in the letter that Eddie will understand, but it flies right over Steve's head.

I guess we're in this for the long haul, so we have plenty of time to get to know more about each other this year. I honestly can't think of any interesting questions to ask you right now so I'll leave that up to you. Aren't dungeon masters supposed to be able to improvise well?

Just rereading this after it got a reblog, I am just unfortunately impressed again at the repeated emphasis on distros with communities around them that I have personally seen to be friendly and helpful with "dumb" (often beginner) questions.

Unfortunately, this guy really did have some points:

I started using Linux myself in the early 2000s, and have also spent a decent part of that time around professional *nix geeks. (Including the one who just came in here to say goodnight.) I know how to do basic troubleshooting and look for info whenever I do inevitably run into a problem, and usually how to wrap questions up in at least close to the "right" words to get across that I have already taken some reasonable steps to solve it.

There are still some spaces full enough of weird insecure elitist types that I would almost rather give my remaining leg the Fargo treatment than try to seek problem-solving advice there. I just don't feel like trying to deal with grouchy condescending chucklefucks. If I wanted that, I could go call my dad--who would probably be at least as helpful too. Y'all are novices at that shit.

That may be an exaggeration, but not by nearly enough for comfort. (Same about my dad, tbqh. Some very similar nerd social fails and need to be The Smartest One.)

It unfortunately can be an even more important consideration for people going in with little to no idea what they're doing yet--with absolutely no reason to expect that kind of reception when they are just trying to learn from folks who might have more experience with the thing. This should not be as big a consideration as it it really can be. But, I can't go around slapping people through their screens, and it wouldn't even help if that were feasible.

Hope you had a good break girlie! So I looked into it and you unfortunately cannot get OG 2 or 3 on PS. I finished Leon 1st route! I was literally cheering as Ada fell and was yelling at her when she kissed him I was pissed. I started Claire 2nd and I’m having trouble understanding how her run lines up with Leon’s. I’m doing basically the same exact things I did with him which is honestly kinda annoying. I’m also trying to figure out the timeline between this one and the first one. Ik that 1 takes place in July & 2 is in September, but what happens in between that with the STARS members? Hoping it touches more on that in 3 (it was on sale digitally for like $10 I’m so excited!). Mr X is terrifying I see why people said this one was the scariest. Anyway sorry for all the info but I couldn’t remember which comment section we were talking g about this before on. 😂😅

Yeah I didn’t think it was possible but I always hold out hope cause Capcom are so weird about their IPs 😒 and yes Mr. X was so fun in RE2make (way better than Nemesis but that’s a whole other tangent 🤣)

You might if you can find the GameCube versions of the OG RE2 and RE3 games. They play as well as the PS1 versions and it’s the exact same so not missing anything 😉

Haha that kiss is what I was talking about! Like she’s such a user —which I get that’s her character she’s a spy (first mentioned in RE1 as John’s password-his girlfriend’s name- and that’s why she’s in OG RE2, looking for her boyfriend who was a researcher for umbrella).

And to be honest the B scenarios do NOT complement the A scenarios. I am 100% of the belief that they were last minute additions 😒 for the most part they don’t really add too much in the way of story aside from a few little anecdotes.

So yeah sorry for that big disappointment 😆 oh man that’s a whole can of worms sorta? Lmao. Capcom is notorious for retconning or having confusing timelines 🤣 So buckle up I’ll try to keep this pretty streamlined:

RE1 takes place in July of 1998 and RE2 and RE3 take place at the same time with 3 lasting longer as Jill becomes infected and is in the city a bit longer. Like another disappointing factor is not having any crossover from the 2 and 3 remake cause come on! That would’ve been sick as hell for Jill to run into Claire or Leon in the RPD 🙄

Anywho, but as for the time between RE1 and RE2 is that Umbrella has Chief Irons in their pocket and so has him disband STARS and sweep everything under the rug. So no one believes them about the Spencer Mansions incident and so everyone’s oblivious to the shit storm about to happen 🤣

Brad is a chicken so hides away from everything. Rebecca peaces out. Barry takes his family and leaves for safety; Chris goes off to Europe to look into some Umbrella connections (which is why Claire didn’t find him and what leads into her looking for him a la Code Veronica).

Jill stays behind in Raccoon but she’s legit about to peace out to go after Chris when all that shit goes down and Nemesis is hunting the STARS members down; he fucking annihilates Brad, like tentacle through the mouth out the back of the head (so in 3make his death was way lame in my opinion 😒)

So unfortunate in 3make they don’t touch on anything inbetween 1 to 2 and 3; with OG RE3, there were epilogue scenes that explained what happened to everyone which was really cool but they took those out for some reason. They’re online if you wanna look it up. It explains why Leon ended up working for the govt, where Claire went, what happened to Jill, Barry, Chris, Ada, etc. All really cool and idk why they didn’t toss it in 😞
