Treat anything on Discord as media that will be lost
Do not use Discord to host your files. Do not rely on Discord to preserve your text. DO NOT RELY ON DISCORD FOR ANY KIND OF PRESERVATION OR HOSTING!!
It CAN be lost, it WILL be lost! You must consider Discord as a part of the Core Internet, controlled by one company that hosts the servers.
I thought it was impressive at first that it replaced IRC, but now I am horrified. If the company behind Discord went under today, how many friends would you lose?
How many relationships? How much writing?
You may think this won't happen, but I remember when AIM went down and along with it, entire novels worth of interaction with my oldest friend.
IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU. IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. NO COMPANY IS INFALLIBLE.
Back up your files! Download anything you've saved to Discord NOW, before the API changes go into effect! And DO NOT RELY ON THEM FOR HOLDING IMPORTANT FILES!

On the recent Infinity Train HBO erasing thing: I want to say that not only should you save and get physical media copies of anything you can from big media, but also, YouTube videos, fanfics, anything you love and think you might want to revisit.
Hoard these things! Young people, trust me, as someone who was around during the early web, lots and lots of whole websites, fanfiction, flash games and videos, photos, songs, podcasts, etc was basically erased and unpreserved. Many are likely gone forever.
Save the things you love like preserving leaves in-between book pages. Anything that matters to you for it to be preserved, you need to help preserve it. Save it AND share it.

Attention older Warriors fans! I am looking for a functioning Wayback Machine link to the old 'Consult Starclan for your Warrior Name' quiz!
The quiz, along with everything else on this old version of the warriors site, is long gone, but a good chunk of the old contents (including stuff like the New Prophecy game and the hunting minigame!!!) survive on Wayback. However, I cannot seem to find a Wayback save that preserves the 'Consult Starclan for your Warrior Name' quiz. Any info is helpful.
(I recall that my generated warrior name from this quiz was Hawkeye (cool as fuck), but I want to confirm that's what it was. At the very least, the New Prophecy game did confirm that the prefix of my OG Government Assigned Warrior Name was indeed Hawk, though I didn't play through enough to see if it would confirm the suffix as well.)

Honestly the thing that strikes me as possibly the saddest part of the AI generated stuff as it exists now is the fact that because AI are so good at mass producing content and are so good at producing things that sound plausible, we are going to have to spend a long time basically removing all this junk information from the internet.
When I was young, the internet was touted to be this place of infinite knowledge and wisdom. Like a library that never ends, full of resources and guides that could make everyone smarter, where all you have to do is search something up and you'll find a good answer sourced from reliable places.
How true that ever was... well, to be honest, there was always vanity publishing and lies, but it felt like the lies and the truth were easier to tell apart at some point, and the garbage books tended to get pushed to the back, at least.
How sad it is that we've filled it with junk data, junk data so numerous and frequent in appearance and general scope that not only is it unavoidable, it is often the first thing you see. And the fakes are only getting harder and harder to tell from the truth, as technology gets better and better at lying to us. How many years down the line are we going to spend combing and removing this content, even if we stop it all today?
How many true things, good content, real stories, art made by people who actually put their heart and soul into it, are going to be smothered – not just drowned out, but outright overwritten, as we run out of processing power and space? The internet feels infinite, but as anyone who has tried to find an old link knows, we lose information off it all the time, and the more of the internet we take up with this rot, the less space there is for real things.
I spend a lot of time on the internet, I quite like it here. Is it too much to ask that it does not rot out from under me, like a forest of dying trees?

Naroin Founding Document, raw text.
This was an old document from my old faith group back in the late 2000s. Surprisingly the annex wiki refers to Naroin as a fanfiction when the person writing it was very serious about her revelations.
Unfortunately, the site was lost to time as it began diminishing in traffic. Thank you Wayback Machine for helping me preserve a tiny piece of Internet History.

GET KOSA TRENDING.
STOP SCROLLING NOW!
AS OF FEBRUARY 21ST, 2024, WE GOT FIVE DAYS UNTIL THE DAY OF DECISION OF THE KOSA BILL, WHICH WILL CAUSE MASS CENSORSHIP ROUND THE INTERNET IF PASSED. WE NEED EVERYONE TO KNOW ABOUT THIS AND CONTRIBUTE. I'M NOT GIVING UP ON YOU ALL.
(IMPORTANT UPDATE: Kosa will not necessarily pass on the 26th. It only has the support to pass in Senate, and we STILL HAVE TIME. That being said, time is of the essence.)
WE'RE DOWN TO THE WIRE BUT WE CAN'T GIVE UP YET. IF WE GIVE UP, EVERYTHING IS OVER. IF WE DON'T, AT LEAST WE HAVE A CHANCE.
I'M THE ONE WHO SOUNDED THE ALARM, AND I'M NOT GOING TO CURL UP AND DIE YET.
Reblog this post in every LEGAL way you can under the Tumblr guidelines with the appropriate tags. TELL AND TAG EVERYONE YOU KNOW, then add the tags to see below... and more if you can think of any complying.
Visit badinternetbills.com if you want to find a way to defeat KOSA. It WILL NOT take much of your time. Reblog with any other information or sources, too-- but make sure to reblog if you can.
Reblog if you support lgbtq+ content.
Reblog if you support questioning queer youth and/or abused youth getting the information they need.
Reblog if you support Ao3 and/or other sites that wholeheartedly preserve talentedly made media.
Reblog if you're going to repost this on other sites than Tumblr and spread the word across Twitter, Tik Tok, Pinterest, or elsewhere, alongside the link to badinternetbills.com.
Reblog if you think KOSA is unfair and shouldn't be anyone's problem -- including the adults ALL OVER THE DAMN EARTH forced to face the mass censorship it causes because "think of the American Children!".
Reblog if you support internet activism and Palestine.
Reblog if you hate fascism or censorship, and don't want actually serious and helpful conversations censored on the internet.
Reblog if you value the internet in any way at all whatsoever.
CHECK THIS PETITION, TOO! https://www.change.org/p/stop-the-kosa?recruiter=1331807538&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=sms&utm_campaign=psf_combo_share_initial&utm_term=psf&recruited_by_id=57368c40-d0fd-11ee-98f7-2175430f819f&share_bandit_exp=initial-36809664-en-US
(Also, please reblog with at least "stop kosa" as a tag and not "kosa". I made the mistake of not adding just "kosa" as a tag...)
We won't let this stand any longer. Let's start a riot and get this trending.

So apparently KOSA (2024 edition) is getting either thrown out until next year or put into effect in six days. That was a guesstimate based on a different person saying that's when Congress is back in session and may be false.
Update that's going in the main post at the top: it has enough support to pass Congress.
It failed the last two times because people were voting against it.
This time, KOSA has traction among the pro-LGBTQ parties. Because nobody is fucking calling their bullshit and screaming from the rooftops that calling it the "Kids Online Safety Act" is misleading.
What will it passing do?
Nothing much, only prevent any education on LGBTQIA+ (it's that stupid fucking argument about us grooming kids again), shut down nearly every fandom space on the internet, and make it required for most big tech companies to have your ID.
Want to have resources for kids to discover their identity readily available? Yes? Then fucking speak up against this stupid fucking bill.
Fandom spaces like Tumblr, Twitter (? I thought the MAGA assholes liked Musk?), Tiktok, Archive Of Our Own, and any other website that hosts fanfic or fanart? Either shut down permanently, forced to uproot to a different country and down for a while (best case scenario, and they likely won't be able to send any data, and therefore fanfics, to the US), or gutted so that you only get to put G rated cishet ships on there, if any shipping at all. How to avoid that? I've already said it: Call your fucking representatives.
Want to avoid the fucking dystopic task of being legally obligated to give big tech your government issue ID? Again, cause an uproar. Call your goddamned representatives.
If they can pass this, the ripple effects could be catastrophic.
So, for fuck's sake, any Americans that can impact this stupid fucking bill and see this? Do everything in your power to shut it down because you have until February twenty sixth (26th) to send this bill back to where it belongs.
And if you can't do that? Reblog, copy my tags, and boost the signal.
Sorry not sorry for ranting, making you scroll through that, and swearing a probably excessive amount, but KOSA is a bill with a GLOBAL IMPACT being passed by ONE COUNTRY because some old people are scared of two guys with who were told they were girls kissing within five hundred miles of a child. Fuck this shit, I shouldn't have to worry about bad bills in America but I fucking do because I use the internet and would like to avoid mass censorship. Fuck this, fuck conservatives, and fuck the fact that some boomers make your country's policies.
Now, if you won't mind me, I'm going to be up until three in the morning downloading fanfiction or copying and pasting them into a a text file if I can't so I can read them by the end of the week.

The internet archive is under attack

The internet archive is so important it’s sooo important to archive digital data to preserve it if you can throw a couple of dollars their way to support them then please do so. Don’t let greedy people and individuals take away the internet archive!

hey guys, maybe before you pirate LEARN SOME ETIQUETTE
why are these important? well, if you openly share the sites, they wil get shut down. corporations are willing to copyright strike anything. you are only going to make accessing these resources harder.
remember: LOOSE LIPS SINK SHIPS
if you want to share resources, don't post them on public forums like tumblr, twitter, instagram or any popular site. remember how zlibrary shut down? yall want that to happen to more sites? do you?
also like if they get shut down, people who can't access these otherwise because they don't have the means for it or its banned in their country are losing access.
Don't post links online. Only share in private conversations.
try and avoid linking the sites directly. a workaround is sharing the downloaded files via other file hosting sites similar to google drive and drop box
DON'T SHARE ON PUBLIC FORUMS. EVER. PLEASE
Use a VPN. i personally like proton vpn, it is a freemium model but the free version works fine.
These are just the basics, there are others but please keep these in mind.

every year people get angry when ao3 requests donations but honestly in a world where almost all spaces online are slowly being eaten by corporations which censor the content on those sites, having a fan-run fan-sponsored place where people can create gay art without fear is great

This is bullshit! This website is dedicated to preserving not just books, but audio files, videos, websites, this is the source of the wayback machine! They have effectively lost the right to lend out digital books, regardless of origin. This now limits our resources even further. It's another book banning issue, and it needs to be heard.

In other news of "Why current copyright law is an abomination that fucks over preservation" here you go.
And, with the way libraries that're "playing by the rules" on books are about to be enshittified, I would like to give a hearty CHOKE AND DIE to those who chide the Internet Archive for "bluh bluh muh piracy" on the lawsuit over their free library, and who will chide them over here.
These corporate jackals will fuck you even if you play by their rules, stop pretending they are in any way morally justified in this, and stop pretending copyright is anything but an enemy of preservation.
(or; at the very least; stop cheerleading efforts to make copyright even worse to "own the techbros," but that's its own gripe)

Hello all,
I am currently on a mission to find and archive all of Suede's Pokémon Journey. I currently have 47 of the ~208 episodes (not all in order), and all of the old Animenia Movie reviews. If you have any ideas where I can find more or have some archived yourself please let me know. It breaks my heart to see this happen to Suede and all the hard work he put into this series and I want to do everything in my power to preserve it.
