Medieval 141 AU Ideas
This is a huge work in progress but here's the ideas I have for this so far! Feel free to send me an ask if you have any thoughts or ideas of your own :D
I made a tag for this AU so it's easier to follow everything
In general, there's some sort of war brewing (with who? No idea) because you can't have a Medieval knight AU without some sort of impending doom. Ghost and Soap start as enemies and eventually fall in love
Soap: Head Knight (aka Captain) of the King’s Guard, the youngest knight ever to hold the position. Dreamed of being a knight as a child. He lives in the castle with the rest of the Guard and hangs out with Roach and Gaz when he can, which is less and less now with the war approaching. His horse Brèagha ("Beautiful") absolutely gets way too many carrots and sugar cubes from him
Ghost: Infamous mercenary with a long list of kills. He was paid to assassinate Soap to cripple Price's operation and kickstart the war but Soap's charm wins him over instead. I don't know what his horse is named but it's either something endearing (like "Sweetheart") or incredibly stupid (like "Sir-Bites-A-Lot-Explosion-Murder"). Totally falls in love with Soap first but is too chicken to say anything about it so he just follows Soap and the other knights around like a lost puppy
Price: King of... whatever the kingdom is called (either England or a made up country). Always busy, always tired. Loves his crazy found family of knights and killers and academics. Adopted Gaz when he was a boy
Gaz: Price's adopted son and heir to the throne. Enjoys running drills with Soap and Roach more than sitting for his history lessons. Best friends with Roach because they pretty much grew up together
Laswell: An advisor in the King's Court, like a Prime Minister-level person who works alongside Price. Super well respected and loved by the people because she's awesome :D
Roach: Another knight in Price's Guard. Mute, communicates with sign language. Has been Gaz's personal knight (and best friend) since forever. Orphan vibes
König: A knight from another kingdom sent to Price as a sort of exchange/show of good will. Was an executioner in the past (sniper's hood -> executioner's hood) because he was tall/strong enough to physically subdue the prisoners. Carries around an axe instead of a sword
Alejandro: ??
Rudy: ??
Graves: Either a knight in Price's Guard or an advisor in his Court that betrays them for the enemy kingdom
Shepherd: King of the other kingdom they're at war with
Other knights: Nikolai, Yuri, Poet, Meat, Toad, Archer, Zach, Chemo, Merlin, Royce, Peasant, Worm, Scarecrow, Rook, Ozone

[Tales of Another Eden] to the "Everything Connected Future" - 3
Tomorrow Tales're breaking their half-backed outdated concept of "Prime Dimension" introduced in ToX 2, HARD to fit in the modern-day Howard Wiseman's multiversal model of the universe all modern-day neighbors are based on. Basically, what is ToX 2 game in ASTERIA? A project started 10 years ago themmed "Сan you chose a girl over the world"? Here is Orie talking about it herself.
youtube
People were saying "MOBAGE are not canon", "cameos" this, "jokes" that, so I pretty much enjoy them talking about Orie now. "They are trying to sell her as Asteria face now" no, dear friends, Asteria FACE is not her, but oops, she is officially reavealed to be THE head of the whole multiversal mess on Tales side, while Yuri were drawing away all attention from what really matters to themselves.
Tumblr media
Yes, WE MIGHT pay for this with Crestoria and ToLink be revealed NOT be in Prime Dimension, but it is the price I'm ready to pay, cause two Prime Chronoses is buuuuuuuuuulsh*t. As you know, Victor is another Ludger, and he's still okay by Asteria's end... too bad, world is not. THUS... if there is a way to support the Rays the way the Rays are doomed
youtube
as THE RAYS and promised "migration" happens BEFORE app suffers Crestoria's fate... yes, why not, but the whole concept overall is SO dawn complex and poorly connected, they're just putting over it a whole another layer of info BASED on well-known (? not in the west for sure) lore,
youtube
and DEEM it MAIN canon in Prime Dimension, the rest being branches and altered history.

Hi, I tried to think about more unique plot about King Yoongi flash fiction, but can only come up with generic one. But it's okay I guess, my thirst will still be quenched anyway.
How about yandere Emperor Yoongi and a palace servant or concubine, later become his queen.
I just could not hold back. Please accept it as a tribute to 'His Pet'. The original character here is inspired by @amoc94's 'His Pet'. Please check out the amazing book if you have not yet.

Yandere Emperor Yoongi x Original Character (Jang Yuri)
Warning- Threats of murder, manhandling, implied royal brutality.
It was already winter and the waning moon was nowhere in sight. The clouds hovered ominously over Yuri and her little brother’s head as she rushed in loading the horse with the essentials she had brought with her. The horse was stable and strong, it had cost her almost half of all of her savings.
But her prime concern was on getting herself and her brother, her only family as far away from the palace, from the capital as possible.
“Wherw are we headed to Nuna?” she gripped her brother’s tiny body tighter as she set him up on the horseback before holding the reins
“Somewhere far, Bonhwa.” she kissed his head gently before proceeding to tie a cloth around his stomach and her waist, keeping him firmly attached to her. Bonhwa was her world, and she would not live a day if any harm comes to her family due to her selfishness.
She was a lowborn, and thus, a maid of the imperial palace. People called her fortunate for being chosen as Empress Dowager’s chambermaid. The pay was better and Bonhwa cold have more meat. Thrice a month! And it was incredible for Jang Yuri.
But fate was a curious little schemer. A single visit of His Highness, the Emperor to his mother’s palace, and one glance, it all took one glance to set the spark and put her heart ablaze, like his fiery gaze, the charcoal orbs and his gold-bathed hair. All had her transfixed. She had never known of the power of one glance until the day she had locked her gaze with Min Yoongi, the seventh Emperor of the Min Dynasty.
And like blooming lotuses, love blossomed between them. He had often declared how he would never let her go, he always needed to hear that she belonged to him from her lips. She had woven a dream of their forever over cherry blossoms.
Cherry blossoms were not forever-blooms. They were seasonal, just like their love.
It was not long before the Empress Dowager found out.
“Either you leave the palace, go far away from the capital itself, or we bring you your sweet little brothers head. And I will make sure you watch it all.”
The words still rang in Yuri’s head, making her shiver.
He was the flame, and she was the moth. She would always want to be one with him, but she knew the cost. And she was not ready to pay the price. She loved the Emperor, she loved him with all of her heart, mind and soul, but she loved her little brother the most. And in the palace of vipers, she knew that a girl like her was only the prey.
She was a commoner, thus, an illiterate. The Emperor had been kind enough to teach her to read a few things in their time spent together. She could manage to read, but she could not write.
She knew that the Emperor would never let her go if she told him, he would cause a ruckus, he had professed his love for her so many times, he had refused to take any concubine, refused to meet virtuous ladies, princesses for marriage, Yuri had no choice but to believe him. But how could have she forgotten, she was a mere commoner and he was the Emperor? Their love was doomed from the beginning.
She wished to leave him a letter. But alas! She had not yet learnt to write.
“Nuna, Nuna!”
Yuri was startled out of her thoughts, looking down at her brother, she smiled at him.
“What is it Bonhwa?”
“Thirsty Nuna…” he whined
“Just a bit more, Bon, we will be by the river soon. I will fill the sack with water then. Why don’t you try to sleep?”
“I can’t Nuna, I want watew.” the child was only four. What would he know of the storm brewing in their lives?
The Emperor was a man of passion, and the passion drowned her, made her so blind to the consequences that she did not see the wildfire spreading until her own nest was on the verge of burning away.
A nest made of cherry blossoms. But cherry blossoms soon wither away. They symbolised the fleeting nature of life and love.
Yuri pulled her brother closer before urging the horse to move faster, her brother was thirsty, and she could not even hear the river. It was the dead of the night, the freezing weather that turned the place quieter.
----
“Stay here, okay? Do not move much, just keep your hold on the seat,” she instructed her brother while tying the horse to a tree trunk.
The water was glacial, but it would do, if she kept it in a warm place for some time, it would be-
The sound of the movement in bushes was distinctive. She stilled, regulating her breathing to hear clearly, until…
Hooves!
Gasping, Yuri rushed towards her horse. Freeing its rope, she lept on it. She held her brother close with one hand while the other caught the reins.
No, no!
It was already too late, the royal guards surrounded them.
“Jang Yuri, the Emperor has demanded you to be brought to the Imperial Palace.” one of the guards declared.
But she knew that no one could be trusted. What is it was the Empress Dowager who had changed her mind? Yuri knew that the woman would be more than happy to have her and her brother beheaded.
But when Kim Namjoon, the most trusted of the Emperor’s Council appeared, high on his majestic horse, she was partly relieved.
“Yuri, you need not fear anyone, I am here to escort you and your brother safely back to the Imperial Palace.”
“Your Grace!” Yuri was quick to jump from her horse and be on her knees, bowing to the aristocrat with her head on the ground “My Lord, I am afraid that I cannot do that.”
“Are you disobeying the Emperor? The man on the throne by the will of gods!” she could already envision Lord Kim’s eyes narrowing in displeasure as he came down from his horse as well and marched towards her.
“No, No, I shall brook divine fury if I ever dare to…”
“Well, then you must not waste another moment and hurry. The Emperor waits for you with waning patience. He has ordered you to be brought back to the palace.” Lord Kim stated firmly.
And Yuri was left with no choice but to oblige.
-----
The sight of the Imperial Palace made her stomach twist in knots. Her palms were sweaty even in such freezing weather conditions. She let out a quivering puff of breath, and she could see the cloud forming in front of her as she heaved a sigh.
She was not ready to face the Emperor, he despised when she addressed him formally, but she was habituated with that, and as much as he hated it, she could not dare to…
The distinctive figure in black robes caught her eyes, and her breath caught in her throat. The golden dragon embroidered on the silk gleamed under the brightly lit torches. And she could already feel his burning stare, the heartache increased with every movement of the horse. She clutched her brother closer to herself as she fought back her tears. He was standing still and powerful, his pale tresses chasing the winter wind.
Finally, when her horse was right in front of the Emperor, with his burning feline eyes boring holes into her form, with stilled breathing, she waited for his command. He said nothing, Lord Kim did
“Emperor of the world, I bring you, Lady Shin Yuri, as commanded.” Yuri frowned at his words. That was not her name. Why was she addressed like that even? She was a damned commoner after all.
Emperor Min tilted his head, his gaze flickered over Lord Kim once before returning to her. She could not even keep up with his fierce stare. It made her feel naked.
Emperor Min Yoongi had his hair tied in a loose ponytail, the absence of his usual headband somehow made him seem primal. There was indeed something primal about his gaze. His scar was more visible, most people in the empire saw it as a bad omen, an emperor who carried a scar. But not her. To Jang Yuri, the scar only enhanced his otherworldly beauty.
There was something so dark, almost carnal about it. And she was not sure if she should fear it or give in to her temptations.
His tongue pushed against his cheek. At last, his body moved, with his robes swishing, he marched towards her horse and she stiffened, pulling Bonhwa closer to herself, the poor boy was confused but dared not to let out a sound.
Defying all her expectations, he instead offered his hand to her, as if she was a royal, Yuri was left stunned. Yet, her hand seemed to have grown a mind of its own as it reached out for his hand. His grip was iron-bound as he helped her down the horse but his warmth, welcoming.
But his one command shattered the illusion of calm and peace.
“Take her brother away Namjoon,”
“What? No, where are you taking him? Wait! My Lord, please do not do this! BONHWA!”
His grip on her did not loosen as she watched helplessly her little sobbing brother being picked up and being taken away by Lord Kim while she struggled in the Emperor’s hold relentlessly but in vain.
“Please, please not my brother, he is innocent, he is innocent!” Yuri begged, she had no clue what was to be done with her brother, that tiny life could be crushed by the cruel forces of the palace and no one would even bat an eyelash.
Never in a hundred years could she envision Emperor Min Yoongi doing this, but he was noble after all, and nobles did not know kindness.
Seeing no other choice, she fell on her knees and begged him.
“Bonhwa is innocent, please!”
“Get up, Love.” his voice was soft but cold.
She opened her mouth to protest but got yanked up back on her feet instead. His grip was punishing as he dragged her with him instead, tears streamed down her cheeks as she continued to beg for her brother’s life, but he responded with nothing but heavy silence.
Finally, reaching a chamber, he kicked open a door, for the first time expressing the boil within.
“For once…” he finally began, his deep, raspy voice ould have been a blanket on her scarred heart had she, not been dragged away from her brother like that “For once I had expected you to not walk away, to believe in me instead of my mother.”
Yuri froze at his words, he knew.
“Yoongi is my son, he would always choose his family, his empire, his throne. Only a lunatic would even compare it all to a mere commoner. It would not even take him sundown to find another girl to warm his bed.”
Empress Dowager’s callous words rang in her head as she stared into the Emperor’s stormy orbs.
He smiled. The smile lacked any warmth.
“But you tried to run away like a coward, the Empress Dowager’s venomous words outweighed my honest declarations of love.”
“M-My L-” her words were cut off by his fingers clasping her face, his grip was painful, making her tears spring up,
“Try again, Love.”
“Y-Yoongi!” she gasped out as he finally let go of her. She gasped, unable to look back at him. His touch felt alien to her. She had known of him as nothing but a gentle lover.
“Bonhwa shall remain under Kim Namjoon’s care until I decide otherwise. Meanwhile, my love, you will train to be a proper lady of the court. You are Shin Yuri from this day, daughter of a noble far in the northern mountains.”
“B-But I am not...I am a commoner what are you planning? Where is my brother?” Yuri spluttered, disoriented and afraid.
“Not anymore. I believe that it is time for you to learn the ways of the court and the world. To see all of me. So that you do not repeat this mistake again.” his tone was clipped, and although he did not raise his voice, it was far more terrifying. Because now Yuri could see a new side of the man she had loved so deeply. She feared him.
Yoongi turned his head to one of the chamber guards and nodded before the guard stepped out, and moments later, four chambermaids hurried inside the place.
“I claim all of you as witnesses to me declaring Lady Sin Yuri as my chosen beloved.”
The Emperor declared before taking off one of the many precious rings adorning his fingers and slipping it on her finger instead, before clasping the back of her neck and pulling her into a passionate, melting kiss.
And Yuri felt her heart stop.

Also, I have no knowledge regarding the historical facts and elements concerning this fic. Kindly treat it as pure fiction.
Also...There would be a second part since *clears her throat* we all are hoes for Daechwita Yoongi.

Pitch Me your thing!
HELLO HELLO MY SUNBEAMS. For most every category, there was an impressive turn-out for pitches, so I thought we’d utilize the weirdness of this year’s GIFTENING to give something new a try. The popular vote winner for each category will happen on the first day, but on the second, the winner will be chosen from YOUR PITCHES. Mostly those pitches will be to me. The exception is in Miscellaneous, where you’ll be pitching to my family, because what I want to do and what is most entertaining isn’t necessarily the same thing.
So! How will we do this thing? GLAD YOU ASKED. I’ll link you to a form in a minute with space for one pitch. Once you fill it out, you’ll be asked if you want to do another. There’s no limit to the number of pitches you can send in! But remember that if you submit multiple entries for the same category, you’ll basically be competing against yourself.
NOW WE’VE GOT SOME RULES FOR DOING THIS (which I mostly stole from Holligay, because I have no creativity this year). Please read them carefully! I’ll toss pitches that break any of these, and I’d rather your hard work not go to waste.
Pitch Me is open for your submissions from RIGHT NOW (22 December) through the very last day of this hellyear (31 December) at 11:59pm MT.
The thing you pitch must have come from what was nominated for THE GIFTENING 2020. (Full list of those nominations in every category below the cut on this post.)
Entries must be unsigned! I’m looking to chose based on the pitch alone, regardless of who submitted it.
The pitch itself must be 100 words or less. HAVE PITY ON ME I CAN ONLY CONSUME SO MUCH.
If you’d like to get some help, ideas, feedback, all that good stuff, the Discord is a FANTASTIC resource I encourage you to use.
HERE IS YOUR PITCH SUBMISSION LINK
And, as promised, below the cut you’ll find the list of all the nominees in every category you guys sent in this year. IT’S A LONG LIST HAVE FUN WITH THAT

I was tagged by both @carpe-libris and @greenangelheart, thanks to you both!
I’ve been in a very weird headspace lately, which isn’t surprising, but I like, am very ambivalent about commenting or posting. Like . . . I don’t know. So, I’m responding! I’m posting, wow. (Actual wow, not sarcastic wow.)
LAST SONG: Much to Steph’s dismay, it’s Bastille. I’ve been listening to Doom Days a lot lately, and I think the last song I finished was Another Place. I also recently watched their documentary on Amazon Prime, and all the scenes of concerts made me tear up. :/
LAST MOVIE: In the theater? Knives Out. Will that be the last ever movie I watch in a theater? If so, I guess it was a good one to go out on. We rented Wonder Woman 2 around Christmas, which had a good first hour, decent 80′s and and DC vibes, but was mostly hot garbage.
CURRENTLY READING: Okay, NOW we’re in my wheelhouse. I’m doing an audiobook re-read of A Fashionable Indulgence by KJ Charles, and realizing how tough this series is. Great, but a LOT goes on. I am HOTLY anticipating KJ Charles latest release, The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting, which drops Wednesday, as well as Best Laid Plans by Roan Parrish, which should be delivered to my Kindle in like . . . 20 minutes. I’ve been taking my sweet time meandering through Samantha Irby’s Wow No Thank You, and have three volumes of Our Dreams at Dusk waiting for me at the library. Mainly, I’m reading all the things.
CURRENTLY PLAYING: I actually just redownloaded Neko Atsume. Decided it was time to tend to a yard of cute animated cats.
CURRENTLY WATCHING: I got a crunchyroll subscription to watch the given movie (so good!) so I’m rewatching Yuri!!! on Ice again, Mark and I are periodically watching Somebody Feed Phil on Netflix for wanderlust vibes since who knows when we’ll ever be able to travel again. I’ve also been on YouTube a great deal.
CURRENTLY WORKING ON: I opened one of my original story documents today, does that count? It’s been a fallow period, but I did write a couple of paragraphs.
(Honestly, if I was weird about tagging people in the before times, there’s no hope for me now. If you see this and want to play along, feel free and tag me if you’d like!)

An Explorer's Guide to the Wonderful World of Visual Novels
Visual novels! Once decried as a “niche” by the masses, they have slowly but surely wormed their way into video games as a whole. Persona became a visual novel, then Fire Emblem. Now Saya no Uta, Gen Urobuchi's disturbing cult “classic” (?!) is available on Steam to stumble upon. There are fewer barriers than ever before to experiencing this varied, historic and often misunderstood medium.
But where to begin? Some visual novels are very long. Others are quite lewd. A number of them (even the ones people love) front-load their most boring material at the beginning, and save the best moments for the last hour of what can be twenty or thirty-hour games. Picking up Saya no Uta without being primed for the extremes of the medium is a recipe for despair. But don't be afraid! Many of the best visual novels being made today are only a few hours long, encompass many approaches and genres, and are acceptable for all ages. In this piece I will lay out a path that you, dear reader, may follow into the thickets. Some things to keep in mind:
1. Every one of the games featured here is legally avaliable in English. If you know Japanese and are willing to spend some money, feel free to experiment on your own!
2. The games featured here range from appropriate for teenagers, to appropriate for mature audiences. Content warnings will be marked as needed. That said, almost none of these games feature the kind of graphic sex you'd see in old-school titles like Fate/Stay Night; the exception is the final title, included for completionism, which is truly sordid and not appropriate for anybody (but I like it).
3. While I've had some experience with the medium, BL and otome games are huge blind spots of mine, so I won't embarrass myself by pretending expertise! If you're interested in exploring those fields, I've heard good things about Code: Realize (get the collector's edition with the extra content!), Hatoful Boyfriend and (if you're OK with some NSFW material) Coming Out on Top.
With that said, let us being our journey!
  SHORT AND SWEET:
These games last about two to three hours, but will stick with you longer than that. Don't assume these are “beginner games” simply because they are short! I could argue that collectively, the three titles here are the best on this list.
Butterfly Soup is Brianna Lei's follow-up to her cult success Pom Gets Wi-Fi. It's free! It's also one of the most acclaimed visual novels ever by the mainstream games press, scoring praise from folks like Patricia Hernandez and Steve Gaynor. As for what it's about: it's the story of four girls on their high school softball team, two of them are in love, and there are many funny jokes. I found the ending to be abrupt, but if you're looking for good vibes and some much-needed encouragement to stay true to yourself, I highly recommend this game. Plus it references Matt Mullholland's excellent “My Heart Will Go On” performance, which earns it extra points in my book.
Content warnings: Brief depictions of parental and physical abuse (no visuals!), ableist slurs.
We Know the Devil is “what if Kelly Link wrote Revolutionary Girl Utena?” Plenty of anime and games channel that energy (my beloved What A Beautiful visual novel series among them) but few do so as succinctly and distinctively as Aevee Bee, Mia Schwartz and their team do in this game. The result is a punk, unsettling take on magical girl stories set in a Christian summer camp, featuring sneaky world-building and some striking body horror. You'll feel for the cast and their struggles, and cheer in the True Ending when everything goes completely off the rails.
Content warnings: Psychological and body horror, alienation of queer youth in a religious setting, freaky music.
youtube
EXTREME MEATPUNKS FOREVER is a game about gay antifascist folks fighting fascists across the desert while riding giant robots made of meat. It's the equivalent of a zine you'd pick up at a fair, willing to dive into messy topics most games shy away from and wholly uninterested in sanding away any rough spots. The music is great too! Play this game if you want to beat up Nazis in a giant meat machine called ROOTS AMONG ASH.
Content warnings: Body horror, mentions of self harm and abuse, suicidal ideation, alcohol, gender dysphoria, loss of bodily autonomy, apocalyptic ideation. For mature audiences!
NICE AND MEATY:
These games are a good bit longer, ranging from five to fifteen hours to beat. If you enjoyed the earlier entries and want more, try some of these!
The House in Fata Morgana is a bonafide cult classic, a game made by a small studio that earned itself a legion of die-hard fans in the visual novel space. At first glance it's an entertaining genre pastiche, four tales of doomed love centering around a cursed mansion. But read past the first four chapters, and suddenly the real story comes to the fore—the tale of two ordinary people and a love that lasts for centuries. Fata Morgana takes some huge swings, tackling societal oppression, intersexuality, recovering from past trauma and learning to move on from those who have wronged you without having to forgive them. Its success at landing these swings likely depends on the reader, but I found Fata Morgana's heart to be in the right place. Couple that with one of the best soundtracks in video games, and you have an experience that is worth it even at 0% off.
Content warnings: incest, domestic violence, racist and sexist remarks, psychological manipulation, homophobic and transphobic remarks, sexual assault, child abuse. For mature audiences!
Heart of the Woods is, as of yet, the most ambitious game made by Studio Elan. It's a supernatural mystery where two adult women travel to a small town in the cold and dark to investigate some strange occurrences. What they find leads to unexpected romance, but also incredible danger. Heart of the Woods is sweet, it's funny (Tara is hilarious!) and as has come to be a running theme in this piece, the music is excellent, courtesy of Sarah Mancuso and Kris Flacke. Heart of the Woods is a game made by people who clearly have a lot of affection for visual novels as a medium, but had enough discretion to snip out the bits they weren't fond of. It also comes with a plethora of accessibility options, allowing you to customize everything from the text to the music to your needs.
Content warnings: Parental abuse, alcohol, light horror elements, some sex scenes you can enable with an optional R-18 patch. For mature audiences!
youtube
As for Seabed, it's... yuri ASMR? It's difficult to describe, as the appeal of this one for me isn't so much the story—which is intriguing, but very slow-paced—as it is the feel of it. Everything from the music, to the sound effects, to the text, contributes to a languid feeling unlike every other game in the medium I have played. Seabed won't be for everyone, but few titles match its distinctive atmosphere.
Content warnings: alcohol, partial nudity. At least one sex scene that isn't too explicit by the standards of the medium. For mature audiences!
  THE DEEP END:
These games range in length from fifteen hours to fifty... and beyond! If you're looking for the experience your Japanese-speaking friends fell in love with back in the days of fan translations and frantically searching online for information on Type-Moon properties, this is it!
Imagine that you have an idea for a great Japanese TV-drama, but you decide to make it as a visual novel instead. Wanting to produce as authentic an experience as possible, you hire actors and have them act out every scene in your script as you take multiple photographs depicting every twist and turn in the plot. Imagine the sheer amount of time and labor it would require. Then multiply it by five, let the player switch between these narratives with the ease of hitting a button on a gamepad, and tie them together into a vast meta-narrative. That's 428: Shibuya Scramble, one of the most ambitious visual novels ever created and a game that was famously awarded a score of 40 by the Japanese games rag Famitsu. Despite having an enormous and complicated script, it was localized into English just a year ago. Don't miss out on this bizarre and fascinating video game! If you're a fan of the Yakuza series, you'll be right at home with 428's brand of lunacy.
Content warnings: Violence, drugs, alcohol, some bad language.
Umineko: When They Cry is a lot.  A gonzo mystery story that starts as a riff on And Then There Were None, it swiftly mutates into a hundred-hour game of four-dimensional chess. It was made by a small team, scored by the music of the gods, and is fully committed throughout to its brand of sentiment, metaphysical rambling and extreme horror. Some might say that Umineko is overwrought, but that is the point: the game is memorable for its excess, not despite of it. If you're looking for a taste of the full VN experience, complete with shocking twists, a weird obsession with trivia and far too many words, this is the most authentic you can find that's appropriate for all audiences. Please play with the original art! It's charming.
Content warnings: Parental abuse, blood and gore, people getting killed and suffering fates worse than death at the hands of witches (???). For mature audiences!
And now we come to [NSFW] Wonderful Everyday, everything your anxious friend told you about visual novels. It's not just that Wonderful Everyday has sex scenes, it's that it takes less time to list what triggering and problematic content is not in the game than what is in it. It references Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus and Cyrano de Bergerac. The game isn't afraid to take huge, unexpected shifts in tone and aesthetic in order to scare or destabilize the player. You might be wondering: why recommend a game like this, which many would find morally abhorrent? All I can say is that Wonderful Everyday is the game that convinced your Japanese-speaking friends to read Wittgenstein. It's a cult classic, a title unavailable in English for years that came with the highest praise imaginable: that it was a profound work of art, that it would change your way of thinking forever. After finally playing through the game two years ago, my feelings were more mixed; but there's no mistaking that few games better personify the visual novel medium's eccentricities, indulgences or shoot-for-the-moon ambition than this shaggy, gross, but fascinating video game.
Content warnings: suicide, psychological and body horror, multiple variants of sexual assault, extreme bullying, extreme violence, bestiality (thankfully cut down for release in the US!), a transgender character who is handled in a pretty specious way. Many graphic sex scenes. For very mature audiences!
There's even more great titles out there that I couldn't fit on this list! The high stakes and interface-shattering plot twists of 999. The countless games being made in engines like Ren'Py, Choice of Games and Twine. South Korean visual novels like Nameless and Mystic Messenger. No matter what kind of person or reader you may be, there is a visual novel out there somewhere for you. I wish you luck in your endless journey of discovery!
Are you a fan of visual novels? Do you have any (safe for work, if possible) recommendations? Please let us know in the comments!

Squid Game: Best Deadly Competition TV Shows & Movies to Watch Next
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Chances are, if you’ve started watching Squid Game, then you’ve finished watching Squid Game. Netflix’s Korean social thriller is highly suspenseful, driving viewers through its nine episodes to its chilling conclusion with an anxiety-inducing urgency. The story of 456 desperate people who play a deadly game for the chance to win a ₩45.6billion ($39 million) prize, Squid Game is a familiar premise executed masterfully, which means that if you’re looking for more stories like Squid Game, then you’re in luck; the “deadly competition” trope is a very popular one. Like other standouts in the subgenre, there is nothing quite like Squid Game, but there’s still many, many TV shows and movies worth watching if you’re looking for something that delves into some of the same themes and scenarios as the addictive Netflix drama. Here are our recommendations…
Death Race 2000 (1975)
Not technically a live-action adaptation of Hanna Barbera cartoon Wacky Races with a deadly twist – though that’s very much the vibe – this Roger Corman camp-fest is a cult favourite. The film stars Kung Fu’s David Carradine as the mysterious champion driver of the Transcontinental Road Race, an ultra-violent race across America designed as an outlet for the population’s simmering violence under a totalitarian regime – much like sports day at school, but with muscle cars instead of eggs and spoons. Health and safety guidelines are very much unobserved on the road, and the bodies soon pile up, as does a conspiracy that goes – you guessed it – all the way to the top! Brrm brrm. – LM
Das Millionenspiel (1970) & Le Prix du Danger (1983)
Two films, in two languages, from two different countries in two different decades, but both based on the same 1958 American short story. Robert Sheckley’s ‘The Prize of Peril’ is a prescient vision based on a television show where citizens volunteer to be hunted by trained assassins for the chance to win a life-changing sum of money. (Yes, there’s a chance that Stephen King, or at least his alter-ego Richard Bachman, read it before coming up with The Running Man). German film Das Millionenspiel was a TV movie that reportedly had viewers call in post-broadcast to volunteer to take part in the deadly televised contest, but perhaps that’s best taken with a pinch of salz. – LM
The Running Man (1987)
What’s more fun than a dystopian action movie based on a novel by Stephen King and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in his 1980s prime? Nothing, that’s what. Arnie stars as a former police helicopter pilot named Ben Richards who is framed for a massacre he didn’t commit and forced to compete in a televised game show where prisoners are mercilessly hunted down by mercenaries. On top of that, the obstacle course is basically an even more fucked up version of Sasuke/Ninja Warrior. Fortunately, Arnie isn’t alone in his hatred of the totalitarian government that has doomed him to death just to entertain The People, and that’s how the revolution starts. Yes, it’s a campy movie with some very cheesy lines, but good for a few Friday night laughs. – JS
Battle Royale (2000)
Battle Royale is one of the most beloved examples of the “deadly competition” genre, especially for nerds like Den of Geek staff and readers. Based on a 1999 novel by Kōshun Takami, Battle Royale made an impression for its brutality and stark social analysis when it burst onto the international nerd cinephile scene back in 2000. The story follows a busload of school children who are knocked out and wake up on an island. Each is given a random weapon—from guns to household items, like a paper fan or pot lid—and they must fight to the death until only one remains. – KB
Series 7: The Contenders (2001)
The early 2000s were… what’s the term for a golden age of something terrible? A high-low point? The eye of the shitstorm? Either way, for the reality television genre, the early 2000s were it. The world dug its mucky snout into the honey pot of dehumanised abs, boobs and therapy bills waiting to happen, and decided it liked the taste. Some good though, did come out of it – satires like Danial Minahan’s 2001 feature debut Series 7: The Contenders. The film shows six American strangers picked by national lottery, armed with guns and forced to hunt each other down while the world watches in nightly instalments. It’s pacey, well-acted, darkly funny and carries your basic screaming ‘what have we become?’ message of many others on this list. – LM
Doctor Who, “Bad Wolf” (2005)
OK, I’m cheating a bit with this one, which isn’t a series or movie, but rather a single TV show episode, but it’s Doctor Who, so I’ll allow it. It’s hard to remember more than 15 years later, but, when Who relaunched in 2005, head writer Russell T. Davies was reinventing the wheel, resulting in some conceptually ambitious installments. This definitely includes “Bad Wolf,” which has a pretty strange premise for the first half of the season-ending two-parter.
In the Davies-penned “Bad Wolf,” Rose, the Doctor, and Jack wake up to find themselves not only separated from one another, but in incarnations of various British TV competition shows like The Weakest Link, Big Brother, and What Not to Wear. Though these shows may seem similar to their 21st century counterparts, the stakes are not: the losers are killed. Honestly, this premise was a bit ahead of its time. Sure, this was five years after cult classic Battle Royale hit the scene, but three years before the first Hunger Games novel would hit shelves. The scenario is not only compelling and fresh, but Davies doesn’t linger too long before explaining how it is relevant to the season-ending mystery. – KB
The Hunger Games (2012)
A list of this kind would not be complete without The Hunger Games, one of the most popular and successful modern incarnations of the “deadly competition” trope. Like Battle Royale before it and Squid Game after it, The Hunger Games succeeds because it uses its violent premise to explore contemporary social anxieties. Suzanne Collins famously came up with the initial idea for The Hunger Games while flipping through the channels between competition reality shows and footage of the Iraq War. Given the massive success of both the novels and movie adaptations, it’s obvious that this story is tapping into some serious and unaddressed collective social trauma. The Hunger Games gave young people especially a chance for temporary catharsis through the guilt, fear, and pain that came with growing up post-9/11. – KB
3% (2016)
The thing about deadly competition stories is that most, if not all, of them are particularly class conscious. When one thinks of the type of person who would choose to participate in, or be forced into, a life and death game, it’s not usually rich people. Deadly competition stories are often about the exploitation of the poor. Perhaps no other entry into the genre understands that as deeply as Brazilian series 3%. This tale takes place in a dystopian near future in which the impoverished residents of the “Inland” can compete in a mysterious event known as “The Process” and potentially be granted access to the upper ranks of society. The Process is rigorous, with many of its participants eliminated and some even killed. How many actually make it? Well, check the title of the show again. – AB
Alice in the Borderland (2020)
There’s a reason why Alice in Borderland started trending as soon as Squid Game binges began: the 2020 Japanese science fiction show based on a manga of the same name, has a lot in common with its Netflix cousin—at least on the surface. Directed by Shinsuke Sato (who also helmed Gantz, another great “deadly competition” story example), Alice in the Borderland begins when three friends are abruptly and unexpectedly pulled into a parallel Tokyo where they must compete in a series of deadly games. The difficulty of each game corresponds to a playing card and, if they lose or refuse to play one of the competitions, they will be killed by lasers from the sky, naturally.
While Alice in the Borderland’s initial premise has some things in common with Squid Game—notably, the shock of its characters upon realizing the deadly stakes of the artificial competition—the respective shows are not only grounded in different cultures (Japanese va. Korean), they also hail from different genres. While Squid Game is very much set in our own world, Alice in the Borderland is much more science fiction in tone and execution. (I mentioned the sky lasers, right?) Both are good shows, but their comparisons quickly fade once you look past the surface. – KB
High-Rise Invasion (2021)
The concept for High-Rise Invasion is as enigmatic and compelling as any anime can be. The anime (or original net animation as this is sometimes dubbed) picks up with our hero Yuri Honjō suddenly on top of a skyscraper with no memory of how she got there. Yuri soon discovers that she’s stuck in a world made up of entirely high-rise buildings and the bridges that connect them. What’s worse is that these high-rises are patrolled armed individuals wearing masks who seem hellbent on killing everyone who isn’t masked. High-Rise Invasion is slightly atypical from your usual “death competition” genre in that it’s not clear if this is even a competition. At the end of the day, however, the goals remain the same: survive at all costs. Until things get a little more complicated of course… – AB

After few years long hiatus I am back to watching anime. This post (copied from my MAL account) is mainly for me to keep track with my favorite stuff. In no particular order, some are old, some are new. With one exception they are all series. I feel like I should make separate list for movies and ovas. Also, these are in no way reviews, rather just blurbs of thoughts that come to my mind when I think about the titles. I am not big on romance but there is few of them towards the end.
Some of my preferred genres/themes: psychological, thriller, horror, neo-noir, suspense, drama, mature, apocalypse, politics, history, sci-fi, mecha, war, gangs, mafia
Tumblr media
~Officially~my first anime, the cornerstone for all the things that followed. Contains pretty much everything that I love about a good story - well rounded characters, especially main character that I could somehow connect with, thrilling story with supernatural and apocalyptic themes and heavy symbolism. Great soundtrack. Stunning animation. The series lacks a little compared to the manga so I must admit I am probably hella biased here but who cares. Fave anime right here. Wolf's Rain
Tumblr media
Similarly to X, it contains a lot from the (post)apocalyptic themes that I find alluring. Bonus points for werewolves and main character who is an utter cutie. Great soundtrack, amazing visuals. Same 90’s nostalgic feel as X with a touch of kind of dreamy atmosphere. Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto
Tumblr media
Top notch visuals and main character who just happens to be my type (you could probably guess that by now). Amazing soundtrack. Political schemes with a side touch of supernatural mystery. Very intriguing plot for history nerds like me. Kurozuka
Tumblr media
Prime example that art doesn’t always have to be easily comprehensible. The story might seem intimidating (confusing, even) at first, but with the ending comes a feeling of immense satisfaction when all the pieces fall in place and you suddenly see the story for what it is. Mix of historical and sci-fi themes work incredibly well together. Add in amazing animation and broody but badass main character and voila – love at first sight for me and a must re-watch show.
Darker Than Black: Kuro no Keiyakusha
Tumblr media
It might seem like this one has kind of a slow start but by the end it gets under your skin, you don't even know how. Kind of like CSI with sci-fi elements, nice and thrilling watch. Cops who don't suck and a lot of scheming on all sides make it fun and interesting. The main character has that perfect mix of badass and cute going on. Caution: like Tokyo Ghoul, this suffers from 'frustrating sequel syndrome'.  No seriously, season 2 p.ssed me off so much I’m still not over it but I still have to include this here because I am in love with the first one.
Bungou Stray Dogs
Tumblr media
Beautiful, beautiful character designs and overall animation, I had a blast watching it. The series starts swiftly and catches your attention instantly. It's pretty much action driven but I also really enjoyed learning about the character's relationships. As an exception to the rule, it has actually absolutely fantastic season 2 where many questions were answered, character's motives explained and it left you wanting more.
Code Geass
Tumblr media
Great characters, but especially very interesting plot based on alternative history and “what-if” political situation. Amazing mecha action and Epic Hero Duo. D.Gray-man
Tumblr media
One of the few long series that caught my attention. Good visuals evolving for the better still, later in the series. Some nice characters to root for, very touching main character arc. Katekyo Hitman Reborn
Tumblr media
Same as above plus bonus points for the mafia flick. Dozens of amazing characters. Baccano!
Tumblr media
Mafia done a bit more realistically than above but still so over the top, but in a good, amusing way. Amazing visuals, absolutely thrilling story. Amazing soundtrack and fight scenes. Vintage is the new black. Higashi no Eden
Tumblr media
Mix of crime and politics with the underlying feeling of impending doom which is in contrast with super cute animation and main character that you’ll just want to hug. Zankyo no Terror
Tumblr media
See above plus Sigur Rós. Dream come true series. Sad af. Shingeki no Kyojin
Tumblr media
Very thrilling, very catchy. Likable characters and very nice animation. I didn’t know what’s the big deal about this until I watched it and saw for myself. Tokyo Ghoul
Tumblr media
…this one was an ordeal. Especially because of the second season. Doves were horrible. Fight scenes were funny. Ghouls themselves are…a mystery. Yet. It’s dark and gore-y and Kaneki is just one hell of a protagonist. Addictive shit. Sighs.
Tsubasa: Tokyo Revelations
Tumblr media
Honorable mention because it’s so much better than the longer series. My two fave characters in one OVA together with my other two fave characters. Beautiful animation like hello. Ouran Koukou Host Club
Tumblr media
One of the classics. Great characters, perfect mix of funny, cute and serious. The Best Representation of twins in modern media ever. Lovely Complex
Tumblr media
Story about me if I ever were lucky with any of my crushes. Very funny, very cute, Made me very emotional, too. Kimi ni Todoke
Tumblr media
So sweet your teeth will rot. Will leave you with a smile on your face. You will fall for the main characters. I know I did. Yuri!!! on ICE
Tumblr media
Beautiful animation and soundtrack. Breathtaking, honestly. Amazing characters, you will cheer for everyone. Gravitation
Tumblr media
Yuki might seem cold as ice(ha) at first but you will still fall for him. Classic of the genre. 90’s as heck and beautiful. Made me cry too.

Season In Hell:
King Zog
Debut LP Stokes Ungodly Flames
By Billy Goate
Everything's too fucking LOUD!
Australia has always felt like a second home for me, even though I've not gotten over there too often in recent years. My grandparents, after homesteading with a family of seven in Anchorage, decided to uproot and hammer down fresh tent pegs in Western Australia. Well, more like a houseboat, to be precise. One of my earliest memories is watching Tom Baker's Dr. Who (I'll forever identify him with the role) on a black and white television below deck, docked in the harbors of Perth. The whole experience was like being on Earth 2 for me. When I came back as a young adult, I remarked that Australia is what the U.S. would look like if the British had won the War of 1776.
Tumblr media
As you can imagine, then, I'm quite fascinated with the heavy music scene Down Under and follow it keenly. People, it is absolutely exploding there. Just pick your city: Melbourne, Tasmania, Brisbane, and the aforementioned Perth on any given night you can get your ear drums blown by some incredibly talented axe wielders and amp worshippers. One band that recently caught my interest was KING ZOG:
Daniel Durack (lead vocals, rhythm guitar)
Vince Radice (lead guitar, vocals)
Rory Keys (drums)
Martin Gonzalez (bass)
"Guitarist Vinnie Radice started this band with me in 2013 after I'd moved back from London, having lived and worked there for eight years," front man Dan Durack tells me. "We'd both been in rock 'n' roll, garage, and punk bands over the years and it was Vinnie's idea to put together a band to play heavy music, with both of us being obsessive fans since we were kids growing up in rural Western Australia."
You're curious about their name, I'm sure. I was. The first hit you get for your armchair sleuthing is Zog I, King of the Albanians. This enterprising fellow went from Prime Minister to President to King (yes, all three). "Bizarre King Zog" he was called. Despite all of his tyrannical proclivities, perhaps his one redeeming quality is he was one crazy chain-smoker, said go through 200 cigs a day. Could there be a connection to the band? It didn't hurt to ask. "A friend of mine's family is of Albanian descent and told me about Zog," Dan recalls. "A pretty interesting character. I thought the name sounded great, perfect for a metal band."
Tumblr media
Even though King Zog is pushing five, they've only been gigging for the last two years. "It took us ages to find the right rhythm section. It was pretty comical, really. One bassist we believe took all the ecstasy in the '90s. After being in the band for a few months, he went away for a fortnight then came back and forgot everything. Another guy brought a practice amp to rehearsal and starting slapping the bass to Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" while we were setting up."
The bad luck didn't end there. "Unfortunately, we had to fire our drummer, Merrick, after we finished recording. Lovely man, but sadly just not the right guy for us anymore. He likes playing fast, with double kick, whereas we just want to get slower and dirgier, if that's a word. We found a killer young drummer, Rory, who's fit in really well, so already looking forward to recording with him. Since it took fucking ages to settle on a recording line-up, Vinnie and I already have a bunch of songs that the band is currently learning. Feels great to be finally progressing after years of being bogged down with people who weren't quite up to it."
King Zog by King Zog
This summer, King Zog's eponymous debut stole my attention. Enticed by Dominic Sohor's arresting album art, I stopped what I was doing and gave it a spin. It's a slow burner with a steady doom groove from end to end. Sometimes a band just does the basics really, really well. So well, in fact, you feel like you're hearing the sound fresh, almost for the first time. That's King Zog for you.
"We finally began recording last year with a rock 'n' roll producer named Ken Watt," the band says, "an amazing guitarist/front man and was in a couple of great Perth rock bands, Valvolux and The M-16s. He's not really a metal guy, but he's obsessed with guitar sounds and tone and knew exactly what we wanted. He set up a studio in his house right in front of Scarborough Beach, one of Perth's most popular beaches. It was winter when we began laying down tracks and it was pretty inspiring seeing the wild coastal weather while recording."
That would explain the churning feeling I'm picking up on here. Songs like the opening "Lost At Sea" present a slow, doom jam with strong, clean vocals that remind me a lot of Plush-era Scott Weiland, emotive guitar solos, and a stormy undercurrent that's pays homage to Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, and Nirvana, presumably the music. In other instances, the influence of Black Sabbath is both undeniable and welcome (check out "Fuck Island," a real headbanger). While 'King Zog' (2017) is a metal album through-and-through, it is appropriately tempered by these influences, which makes the record, well, interesting to listen to.
"Recording it felt easy since we'd been playing those songs for about three fucking years," Dan remarks. King Zog lucked out in having their debut mastered by famed English sound engineer Noel Summerville, whose resume includes decades of greats, including records by Bolt Thrower, Napalm Death, and Electric Wizard's Witchcult Today, "a record I've been pretty fanatical about since it came out."
Tumblr media
The songs on the new record go back to when King Zog was still in is awkward growth phase, just Dan and Vinnie. "We write well together. We're good at completing the other's songs," Dan says. "I'll put in a bridge here; Vinnie will add a chorus there. Once I get a theme for a song in my head the lyrics come quickly, which might sound obvious to anyone who reads them! I try to keep it simple. I like a good vocal melody having grown up listening to Ozzy, Dio, Gillan, Paul Di'anno, Rob Halford, and Blackie Lawless."
These vocal anchors make sense for this record. While much of doom today adopts death-style vox, Dan prefers singing over the growling. "Cookie Monster style," he calls it. "Just a personal preference. I do like eating cookies -- we call them 'biscuits' in Australia." I almost forgot that. Please pass the biscuits.
And that grungy sound I described earlier? Turns out I was on to something. Dan and I grew up in the same era. "I was a teenager until 1994 and dug some of the grunge bands," he tells me, "particularly Nirvana, L7 and Mudhoney. Some of Soundgarden's stuff. I'd been pretty metal-obsessed as a teenager, but as I got into my twenties I did what a lot of people do and started looking backwards and getting into the pre-history of the stuff I loved, which led to a lot of '60s psychedelia, garage rock, and proto-punk."
This included bands from the groundbreaking Nuggets compilation, The Stooges, MC5, and Aussie acts Radio Birdman and The Saints. "All rites of passage bands for young Australian men," he explains “Australia had a band called The Missing Links in the '60s which I loved -- trashy and loud. While I never stopped listening to metal, I did embrace '70s and '80s punk and a lot of '60s music."
From there, Dan spend time in London soaking in the scene. "Living in England and its close proximity to Europe was perfect for metal shows and festivals, and I saw a lot of bands. I'd go out of my way to see Electric Wizard. I took a bus to Bristol and a plane to Berlin to see 'em. That band makes me feel like what it must have been like for a Sabbath-loving teenager in the '70s. They are easily the band I most look up to in terms of sheer mind-numbing, crushing, hypnotic riffs." At this point, I was curious what else was on rotation in the King Zog playlist. "Lately been listening to Windhand, Monolord, Yuri Gagarin and we listen to Sleep a lot."
Tumblr media
Before I let front man Dan get back to riff-slinging, I had to ask about Perth. It had been years since I'd been there and I was curious what it was like living and gigging in the City of Light. "Perth's an isolated city. Whether that's reflected in the music, I don't know. There's a small but vibrant metal scene here that's also quite supportive. We've played with grind bands, punk bands, thrash bands, southern metal bands. We supported Acid King last year which was cool. We play loud and there's a lot of young sound engineers in Perth who are okay with that, thankfully.
There was that one time, however. "We played one venue down the road from where I live, an RSL hall (Returned and Services League, a support organization for men and women of the Defence Force) which we played at a couple of months ago. They'd been hosting bands for about a year but shut it down after we played. We'd only played a few songs when the guy who ran the bar yelled at me, saying 'You might be the best fucking guitarist and singer in the world but we'll never know because everything's too fucking LOUD! You've even alienated your own fucking fans, they're sitting outside!' We think the venue is probably better suited to bingo nights."
I don't anticipate King Zog turning the volume down anytime soon. 'King Zog' (2017) is an enjoyable ripper from end-to-end. "We're getting vinyl pressed in the next couple of months so looking forward to getting hold of it. We're focused on the next album already. Only the most lumbering, killingest riffs will make the cut."
Follow The Band.
Get Their Music.

Defiant Putin welcomes World Cup as Russia win
MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia welcomed the world to the soccer World Cup on Thursday as fans streamed in, the hosts savored a 5-0 victory on the pitch and President Vladimir Putin’s government derided Western efforts to isolate him.
The Kremlin leader, greeted by a huge cheer ahead of the hosts’ opening game against Saudi Arabia, spoke of showing the world a hospitable Russia and of sport overcoming differences.
Russia is grappling with Western sanctions imposed after its seizure of Crimea from Ukraine four years ago, but a crushing win in the first of 64 matches of a month-long festival was all many Russians were thinking about.
Talking of a love of soccer uniting the planet “as one team”, Putin said: “In this unity, over which no powers reign, in which there are no differences of language, of ideology or of faith, lies the great power of football, and of all sport.”
Western powers chose not to send senior representatives to the opening ceremony but, despite some muttering this year as relations soured further, there are no sporting boycotts like the one that marred the 1980 Moscow Olympics, or doping bans of the kind that excluded many Russians from the last two Olympics.
“Attempts at a boycott were doomed from the start,” Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Mutko, a close Putin ally and long-time sports minister – himself banned from the Olympics – told Izvestiya newspaper. “It shows how foreign politicians are sometimes cut off from real life.”
The president, newly re-elected after 18 years in power, heard British singer Robbie Williams dominate a colorful half-hour opening ceremony at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium with what the Kremlin listed as an array of 15 foreign leaders — though that included eight from ex-Soviet neighbors as well as two from Russian-backed breakaway regions of Georgia.
Putin watched the game with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, stretching across FIFA President Gianni Infantino to offer a consoling handshake to his Saudi guest as Yury Gazinsky put Russia a goal up after 12 minutes. The comfortable win raised hopes that the low-ranked hosts might progress into the tournament’s later stages.
“Russia in Centre Field,” headlined the state-run newspaper Rossiiskaya Gazeta. “The main victory is already won,” it said, praising an organizational effort in which a dozen stadiums have been built or rebuilt and a huge security operation rolled out.
NO BOYCOTT
The biggest event Russia has hosted since Soviet times, when the United States and others boycotted the 1980 Moscow Olympics over the invasion of Afghanistan, puts a spotlight on how Russia has, since the chaotic collapse of Communism, resurrected its economy and a tight social order under former KGB agent Putin.

Western leaders are staying away, though some are likely to attend later matches if their teams progress, and protests and criticism — of conflict with Ukraine or human rights abuses in Russia — have been largely confined to foreign soil.
British campaigner Peter Tatchell was briefly detained by police for staging a one-man gay rights protest on Red Square.
Governments have warned their citizens to beware of violent Russian soccer hooligans as well of a risk of racial and homophobic harassment in the streets.
Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov, however, dismissed concerns raised when a leading lawmaker urged Russian women to avoid sex with visitors, especially those from different races.
“All countries accuse each other of racism, homophobia. This has nothing to do with the World Cup,” he told reporters. “As for the women of Russia, they can handle anything themselves.”
With some 200,000 visiting fans on hand to follow the 32 teams, Putin has urged Russians to put on a show and get behind the home team — whose poor recent form had made them the tournament’s weakest side by FIFA world ranking.
There was good-natured sharing at the ground before the match among fans from around the world in sombreros, fur hats, national strips or national flags, with little of the heavily armed security and troops seen at similar events in western Europe since Islamic State attacks.
Vyacheslav Golikov, a 32-year-old teacher, had come over 4,000 km (2,500 miles) from Siberia.
“We’re feeling amazing emotions,” he said. “There’s a sea of people … We think foreigners’ impressions will be great.”

Vitaly Mokhov, 36, came from Vologda in southern Russia with his father to celebrate his 70th birthday.
“It’s a festival,” he said. “We’ve never seen anything like it in the history of Russia, and we’ll never see it again in the rest of our lives.”
