#The Chimera awakens

Hi, I actually have an Astoria question for you if that’s ok.
So the only Astoria routes I read in full were Astraeus and Medusa, where MC rejects her divine heritage (violently in the former and more amicably in the latter, but still, rejection). The fear always being that if she accepted it, therefore accepting Hera, she’d lose herself in the process and all that.
Anyway, I did read the first episodes of everyone’s season 4s because I wanted to see the kid sprites, and it seemed like in some routes she does actually become a goddess?
And I’ve just wondered about that for years, like what happened in those routes and how did it work? I know that MC fearing she’d lose herself in Astraeus and Medusa doesn’t necessarily mean it would have happened, but how does it all go down in the routes where she accepts divinity?
Hi!! That's perfectly fine, I love getting asks about Astoria!
But you're right!
Alex's, Hades', Cerberus', and Chimera's routes all end with MC taking Hera's power in some way. Hydra's, Medusa's, and Astraeus' routes end with MC remaining, for the most part, human.
In Alex's route, Hera is first awoken in MC at the end of season 2, where they discover that she's Hera's vessel, and that if she awakens, her body will become Hera's. Ares briefly awakens her in the season finale by forcing his aura into her, but MC fights and succeeds in regaining control. Hera, it should be noted, does NOT want to awaken again, and MC knows this.
Come season 3, Zeus finds out, and by the season finale, he has dragged her and Alex up to Olympus so that he can reawaken Hera, no matter the cost. Alex fights Zeus, and Hera speaks to MC as they do, noting that Alex will fight to the death for her, and offers her the choice to become a demigod like Alex, taking over her power in the process. MC accepts this, and Hera's power awakens in her; she becomes a demigod, and Hera passes on entirely.
(In the thrilling end, this is slightly different; Zeus channels his aura into her ring- Hera's ring- and beckons to Hera, awakening her. Hera then tells MC that one of them has to die because her power can't stay sealed anymore. She offers immortality to MC, and MC takes it.)
There's a little throwaway line in one of the specials that comes from choosing a certain dialogue option that mentions Hera's throne is now MC's, meaning she did fully inherit the goddess' power in that fight, and she's taken her place.
In Hades' route, she actually starts "becoming" godly at the start of season 3. That is, she's being kept on Olympus under the guise of preparing for her and Hades' wedding, while being there is bringing Hera's power to the forefront. (There's a line in the first episode iirc where MC states sometimes she actually begins to glow while on Olympus, because of Hera's power).
In his route, it's clearly stated and portrayed that in order to awaken Hera and bring her back, the gods must perform a ritual to do so, which is only consistently shown in Hades', Astraeus', and Hydra's routes.
Hades is searching for some way lost to the gods that would keep MC anchored amidst the ritual, so that she doesn't die, while the other gods are impatient and keep pushing to awaken her asap. The ritual comes about during the season finale, wherein every god speaks 'ancient words' and fills her with their power; she holds onto Hades, and its their love that anchors her in place, allowing her to survive and remain herself as Hera's power fully awakens, and she becomes a full-blooded goddess. All of the gods are exhausted afterwards, stumbling back into their thrones.
(In the thrilling end, Hades chooses to do the ritual by himself, hoping that doing it alone will secure her safety. He drains himself, pushing his aura into her artifact, and is visibly pained by doing so. It's also a MUCH more painful process for MC here, and she nearly loses herself to Hera.)
In Chimera's route, it plays out a lot differently. Typhon 'awakens' Hera's power in the season 2 finale, but as a last-ditch effort to help her and Chimera win in a fight against Prime.
In season 3, they face challenges from Echidna. During this season, MC starts experiencing symptoms, takes a pregnancy test, and finds it to be positive. She and Chimera assume she's actually pregnant, and Echidna accuses her of trying to babytrap him, essentially. They wind up arguing with her in the last two episodes of the season, and when her patience runs dry, she attacks them- but it does nothing, because Hera's power has fully awakened, and MC recognizes that she's become the goddess.
Afterwards, the gods ask if she's truly pregnant, at which point she admits to not knowing as she never took a proper test (human ones don't work properly when monsters and gods are involved), and she then discovers that her pregnancy symptoms were a result of her body changing into Hera's.
Meaning, she was in the process of becoming a goddess the entire last season without fully realizing it; she's not actually pregnant. iirc, there's no worry within Chimera's route that Hera will take over MC's body, and there's no issue with the gods seeking to awaken her themselves.
(Interestingly, though not much changes about the awakening in the thrilling end thanks to her acknowledging that awakening in the episode before, Chimera states, "The mere fact that she remains herself through this transformation..." which means that there WAS a chance of Hera awakening and taking over, though it was never something they actively worried about happening.)
In Cerberus' route, it's the most obscure of all, in that we don't actually see it happen. Season 3 ends with MC still human, and wanting to stay that way. Hades says somewhere in Cerb's route that MC will become Hera, and MC is like "mmmm no I don't think I want that" but clearly something changes, because come season 4, she's Hera. My guess is that something similar to Chimera's route happened- a false pregnancy that was a symptom of Hera awakening, unraveling inside of her. It feels like it was something that just happened without much fanfare, something that she genuinely couldn't stop because it Just Happens.
The biggest thing regarding Hera to happen in Cerberus' route is that Zeus tries to force her first into marrying himself, and then Hercules. Something about how Hera shouldn't marry a monster, which Hades fights back against, considering Cerberus is his son. They don't do anything to try awakening Hera though.
Anddd that's all of those guys :]
But since you didn't read Hydra's route either..
I'd just really love to say that when Zeus tries to awaken Hera in Deeandra (Hercules' wife, claiming to be the lost goddess in s2), he claims they need a human sacrifice to do so. Which is a completely different method of awakening Hera when no other route tries to kill a non-vessel to awaken her. (If your guess is that MC was going to be the sacrifice, you would be right, and i will endlessly laugh over how unlucky she is LMAO)
Following that, in season 3, Zeus tries to awaken Hera by flooding his aura into MC, but she's sort of "blocked" from using her artifact most of the season due to a head injury early on, so Zeus' attempt is fruitless. Also through this season, the other gods continuously try to convince MC to become Hera, and she refuses them each time. They don't force her, and ultimately accept her decision at the end of Season 3, after surviving a fight with Zeus.

Reactions to Chaos Creator's Chapter 279
Brief summary: Tense battle scenes. Ryan about to enter his runaway state. Lock hears the howls from the divine item.
==========
Today's battle scenes were quite nerve-wracking. Cale losing the divine item, Eruhaben and Raon's shields easily breaking from the wing's attacks, and the black liquid engulfing Cale's group.
Cale had the Fire AP to purify the black liquid, Eruhaben had his shield and could fly upward, and CJS pulled back Raon to safe ground, but what about CH? 😟 CH was flying thanks to Raon's magic, but the chapter did not say if Raon created a magic shield for him when the black liquid soared upwards.
Epley said that the elderly mage who had now become a chimera with dragon wings was their anti-god weapon, so it was to be expected that Eruhaben and Raon's shields easily broke.
Cale could hear the divine item's "howls", but could not understand it. Only Lock heard it from afar and understood it. I guess Lock is going to have his awakening soon? 🥰
-Are you alive? -Instinct is not something to be suppressed. -Believe in yourself. -There is a difference between being strong and being violent. -The dirt doesn't take away the essence. -The silence of the night is not scary, it's just the sun going down. Don't be afraid of the night. -I did not protect you. You protected yourselves. The words were spoken as if a master was giving a final instruction to a pupil. -…You. Lark was out of breath as he ran from roof to roof. Then, the faint voice changed. -…Can you hear me? I do. I hear you!
Ending Remarks Battle scenes today, and the prelude to Lock's awakening/power-up. The constant flashbacks and comparisons to that time in the Gorge of Death when Lock went berserk and protected Cale and Raon were nice and heartwarming to read. 🥰 I'm excited to see how much Lock will grow in the following chapters.

What are your ideas on Yutu’s Unique Magic?
Maybe Riddle!Yutu having a countering UM to his father, or Cater!Yutu having one that allows him to see the true in people, etc, etc…
Also, what if Yutu has a sister/brother back in his OG timeline? Did he bring them with or they just got left behind?
for context, check these posts (1) (2) or look at the Fyuuture kid section under series on my masterlist.
oof I have a lot. Unique magic strikes me as something that is supposed to be reflective of who the mage is as a person as well as the Disney character/concept the boy is based on.  Since Yutu is not based on anyone really, we are more free with inspiration for his unique magic, with two exceptions. Idia and Kalim both have lines suggesting that their unique magics are passed down in their family's, though I imagine the incantation is different to each person; it makes sense for their Yutu's to have Gate to the Underworld and Oasis Maker respectively.
Before I really get into the weeds, I do like the idea of Yutu having (a) sibling(s) in the OG timeline, again because that can happen in Fire Emblem Awakening but also because it adds to the angst somewhat. As for whether or not he would bring them back in time, the answer to that is yes. Yutu has a few friends he traveled back in time with that are scattered around Twisted Wonderland with no way to contact each other, and if he had a sibling (with the exception of Malleus! Yutu whose sister is a bit... special) then they would be among that group. If you want some extra angst we can steal even more from FE: Awakening and make it so Yutu's sibling died before he arrived, maybe they turned into a blot monster that follows Grim's overblotted form as a replacement for his hench human.
We could even make it so Yutu's sibling doesn't have any magic, just like Yuu. You know. For the parallels ψ(`∇´)ψ

Riddle! Yutu
Riddle! Yutu having a magic that counters his dad is such a good concept, especially for someone who initially hates him. There are two types of magic that we have seen counter Off With Your Head: Trey's Doodle Suit and a strong shielding spell used by Leona.  I can think of a few directions to take this line of thinking, so let's start with the most grounded.
A strong shielding spell, one that can be applied to multiple people, sounds like a spell that thematically fits Yutu.  We don't know a lot about how these spells function, but they're important for combat magic and shielding multiple people seems to be implied to be difficult.  Let's say in this case it's natural for Yutu and essentially the same for him as shielding himself.  This sort of spell feels like it should have a card themed name, Big Blind maybe?  It's a term that refers to the minimum bet required to continue a poker game if I understand what I read correctly. The only card game I know how to play is yugioh
The less grounded approach could be a sort of spell that creates an anti magic field… it's a concept I did toy around with mostly because I was thinking about more Alice in Wonderland themed names for a unique magic, and thought up “Everything is Nonsense” or something along those lines.  My one sort of caveat to this concept is that I think a spell like this would be heavily stigmatized, probably cause a lot of blot build up for a caster, and I'm uncertain of how it would work mechanically. Well that and I have an idea for a different Yutu who this spell would fit a bit better... but that would require me to cook with a different type of fire.
I did mention in my post about Riddle! Yutu that I liked the idea of his unique magic allowing him to shrink or grow because of Rule 42 in Alice Adventure's in Wonderland saying all people more than a mile high must be rejected from court. If Riddle is the Queen of Hearts, well then any time they argue all Yutu has to do is grow and then he won't be allowed to yell at him any more so there. As a side note do you think this logic could apply to the Chimera in the Prologue? Because I could see that being darkly funny if it comes up in game in that context.
Cater! Yutu
I had a really well thought out idea about Cater being able to see a limited amount into the future before I realized that I was describing the sharingan from Naruto so fuck me I guess.
So just hear me out, you know in twst battles you can see at least one of spells the enemy is going to use? That's sort of what I thought Yuu's unique magic would be if they had it, but I also like the idea of it being Cater! Yutu's. It would function more like an instinct than an actual vision (*clenches fist* just like naruto) but he can use his magic to tell what a person intends to do before they fully think it. Cater is skilled at divination so a unique magic that lets his kid see a little bit of the future feels like it could work for him.
Speaking of divination, I sort of also like the idea of Cater! Yutu having a magic that has something to do with stars and starlight. Maybe he can turn into a void like being made of cosmic energy, similar to how Cater's Split Card is symbolic of his many faces, Yutu's void form could be symbolic of how he feels displaced in the world.
Ace! Yutu
We don't know what Ace's unique magic is (yet) but there are a lot of theories. Time travel, something that steals another person's spell, something related to optical illusions?
I think it would be fun if Ace! Yutu could do something with reflections/mirrors. As in he can reach through mirror and attack, similar to how Hanged Man works in JoJo. The further the distance the more magic it takes, it can also work with things like water but that takes a lot more magic too.
Either that or he's able to travel between mirrors on his own without the dark mirror. That might be a much more difficult thing to do though...
Jade! Yutu
I have a very clear idea for what I wanted to do with Jade! Yutu's magic, but it's a bit complicated to explain because I'm not a physicist.
The basic idea was that Yutu is able to exert magical force on an object, so long as he knows it's exact dimensions and what it is made of. I called it "Crush the Heart" because I wanted both his and Floyd's Yutus to have magic to follow their dad's naming theme. To activate it he has to be looking at where the object should be and picture it in his mind, the more precise the crush the more concentration, control, and magic it takes.
The name could in theory be quite literal, but Yutu isn't quite there yet in his knowledge of biology or magical control.
Floyd! Yutu
Like I said, I want the twin's Yutu's to have a name that is similar to their dad's. Floyd's Bind the Heart uses Kanji that literally translates to "coiling tail"... which I guess is more similar to the magic I gave Jade! Yutu than the "gnawing teeth" that Shock the Heart does, but that magic is supposed to be something that requires calm collected control, which Floyd and his son simply do not have. Still, lets play off that and give Floyd! Yutu a magic that has something to do with shocks and teeth.
I think Floyd! Yutu should have a taunt. Floyd already loves the idea of a good fight, his son is really good at combat magic, and they both talk so much shit that the idea of that literally being his unique magic just sort of works.
Functionally the spell would work similarly to Jamil's, where the person has to look him in the eyes for it to work. The name of the spell could be something like "Reveal the Heart" but that does sound sort of stupid to me so I'm not sold on it. The spell makes a person unable to focus on anyone other than Yutu and wares off after a certain amount of time, it can fail in fashion similar to Riddle's if the enemy mage has a protection spell up.
Azul! Yutu
Another Yutu who I know exactly what I wanted to do with, I got the idea while playing Darkest Dungeon of all things. I feel like it's a bit lame though.
Azul! Yutu can create phantom limbs out of cosmic magic. When he is in octopus form those limbs take the form of human arms, and when in human form they take the form of tentacles. He says when asked that what he is doing is manipulating shadows because he likes to keep people on their toes (or fins take your pick) and he finds it very funny to watch people squirm when they realize there really is no escaping his grasp.
It is a very difficult magic to use, he needs physical strength to use those limbs because they are only as strong as his real ones, so he works out and a lot to make sure he doesn't hurt himself while using it.
Ruggie! Yutu
Laugh With Me is a perfect magic for a hyena to have, and it suits Ruggie's personality really well. Actually... I did write that his Yutu shares his laugh and I think it would be so painfully cute if that extended to his Unique Magic too. Ruggie makes a big deal about how he's kind of a crappy mage, how he has to do a lot of extra work to make up for his low mana pool and poor upbringing. Can you imagine how embarrassed, proud, and awed he would be if his son inherited his spell? That's something only great mages are supposed to have, not little guys like him. Good thing neither Yuu or Yutu care about that huh?
Vil! Yutu
I haven't done a post about Vil! Yutu really beyond this bit about him bonding with Vil, but I did mention what I think his unique magic would be.
I can't find it but I read a myth once about a painter who drew animals with a magic paintbrush that would bring them to life if he gave them two eyes, so he only ever gave them one. I thought it would be neat to have a spell like that and it feels like something that would fit Yutu Schoenheit very well. His magic allows him to create temporary familiars similar to Lilia's bats, bigger creatures take more magic and focus.
I wrote the name for this spell as "Technicolor Dream" since I thought it would be nice for the name of Yutu's magic to nod towards his father's job and his dreams about having his family back.
I have a lot more Yutu's chilling in my inbox, so I'll revisit this topic (lilia! yutu has a whole ask about his um that I really like) once we are done with round 2 of Yutu posting.

I'd like to think that Pseudodragons aren't tiny dragons, but some kind of jumbled chimera of different kinds of lizards. A magician's attempt at replicating a dragon in form through the use of magic. For that same reason I also think in this world there are also awakened pseudodragons, as they naturally would have the intelligence of- well... lizards. I imagine that their appearance would be varied, and the time it would take to create one successfully would make them incredibly rare on their own. The morality of the act in itself could be put into question...

Thoughts on JJK chapter 223 (Spoilers)
Tumblr media
Utahime really sells this image. The way her hands, arms, robes and her hair are drawn awakens in the reader the feeling that we're really at the beginning of the first attack in this gigantic battle. Gakuganji on the other hand conveys passivity and because they're meant to be seen as a unit, we can guess before turning the pages that what they're going to do will be in support of Gojo.
Tumblr media
We get closure on Yaga and a Gakuganji who who lied to the higher ups and seems remorseful. Two pages of the manga for his heel-face turn seems exactly right for a minor character and in hindsight this doesn't even come as a surprise. Gramps plays an electric guitar, his favorite singer is Jimmy Hendrix and he has nose and lip piercings; things the conservative elders hate. Hakari was thrown out of school for his technique and Kirara because she's trans, so it's logical to conclude that Gakuganji had similar conflicts with the JJsociety in the past and look where he's now!
This is also the first flashback we get of the month we skipped over. We're going to get even more of them when the time in the narrative is right.
Tumblr media
There is no JJK fan who wasn't delighted in seeing this massacre
Tumblr media
Ijichi gets his time to shine and the recognition from the strongest... unfortunately he's now targeted by death 😂
Utahime's technique is really interesting. It's not an offensive technique by itself and Utahime still became a semi grade 1 sorcerer with it meaning her fighting capabilities lie somewhere else.
Tumblr media
This is some spectacular lore! Singing, dancing, playing instruments and making hand signs. Only the hand sign can't be omitted when activating the Domain Expansion. Gojo does all of this as well so be prepared for Sukuna singing and dancing somewhere in the future.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sukuna was really taken by surprise by this and lost both of his hands in having to take the attack had on. (Uraume is somewhere in the background and no one cares). The first point in this battle goes to Gojo and this sets the scene for the upcoming chapters.
Tumblr media
We've already seen this wavy effect when someone with high amounts of cursed energy does something. E.g. when Megumi tried to summon Mahoraga before Sukuna took control of his body.
Tumblr media
This is one of the better drawn faces of Sukugumi and Sukuna is enough of a bitch that he'll start his counter offensive against Gojo with Megumi's shikigami but I have a theory on how Megumi is going to fight against Sukuna with his Chimera Shadow Garden DE.
Tumblr media
The results for my poll from last week are in and more than 2/3 of the 195 who voted think that Nobara will come back.

Varney the Vampire: Chapter 1
[I originally posted a shorter recap of this chapter on Livejournal, on December 7, 2010. If you'd like to just read the original, less serious version of the recap, that's here.]
[Content note: I'll talk about this a bit later, but, heads up: this opening chapter describes an assault that’s more vivid than I remembered. That's the second half of the recap.]
I'm not actually going to rewrite all my Varney posts like this, but I'd like to talk not just about the way James Malcolm Rymer wrote the chapter, but also the way I recapped it 12+ years ago.
First off, I don't think I gave Rymer enough credit for the atmosphere of the opening; maybe I just appreciate it more after struggling through some of the filler chapters. I did give him some credit, noting that there are 900 words of gothic effectiveness before anything actually happens—I'll quote the very beginning at some length so you can get a feel for what the next 230+ chapters are like:
The solemn tones of an old cathedral clock have announced midnight -- the air is thick and heavy -- a strange, death-like stillness pervades all nature. Like the ominous calm which precedes some more than usually terrific outbreak of the elements, they seem to have paused even in their ordinary fluctuations, to gather a terrific strength for the great effort. A faint peal of thunder now comes from far off. Like a signal gun for the battle of the winds to begin, it appeared to awaken them from their lethargy, and one awful, warring hurricane swept over a whole city, producing more devastation in the four or five minutes it lasted, than would a half century of ordinary phenomena.
It was as if some giant had blown upon some toy town, and scattered many of the buildings before the hot blast of his terrific breath; for as suddenly as that blast of wind had come did it cease, and all was as still and calm as before.
Sleepers awakened, and thought that what they had heard must be the confused chimera of a dream. They trembled and turned to sleep again.
I summarized this as:
The lightning! The thunder! Ominous calm! The buildings scatter like toy houses! O THE STORMY STORMINESS OF THE STORM. And then the hail starts up, at which point I started laughing, because… hail. Sexy, sexy, stormy hail. Oh the hailiness of the hail, the stormy sexy chunks of ice hailing on your head, yea, unto a mild concussion. In conclusion: hail.
I had some interesting expectations here about gothic atmosphere, or perhaps just the vampire genre itself, necessarily being "sexy." You do see some eroticism in a vampire story like "La Morte amoreuse" (1836), but—remember how I mentioned the cottage industry built on Polidori's "The Vampyre," which ultimately results in Varney the Vampire as a sort of parody? There's no Erotic Biting in any of that. Biting of any nature happens off-page in "The Vampyre," and to my knowledge, Ruthven doesn't manage to bite anyone in spinoffs like The Bride of the Isles. At the time Varney was first published (1845-1847), I don't know if people were expecting scenes like—well, what's about to happen next.
Enter Flora:
And now we meet Our Heroine, Flora Bannerworth, an aptly-named maiden who is "young and beautiful as a spring morning," bare shoulder, sculpted ivory bosom, teeth of pearl, moaning in her sleep, a flood of loosed tresses, so on and so forth. Wind, rain, sexy hail, 600 words, FLASH OF LIGHTNING! SHRIEK!
Okay, I clearly expected the heroine to be eroticized, and I was at least right about that:
The bed in that old chamber is occupied. A creature formed in all fashions of loveliness lies in a half sleep upon that ancient couch -- a girl young and beautiful as a spring morning. Her long hair has escaped from its confinement and streams over the blackened coverings of the bedstead; she has been restless in her sleep, for the clothing of the bed is in much confusion. One arm is over her head, the other hangs nearly off the side of the bed near to which she lies. A neck and bosom that would have formed a study for the rarest sculptor that ever Providence gave genius to, were half disclosed. [...]
Oh, what a world of witchery was in that mouth, slightly parted, and exhibiting within the pearly teeth that glistened even in the faint light that came from that bay window. How sweetly the long silken eyelashes lay upon the cheek. Now she moves, and one shoulder is entirely visible -- whiter, fairer than the spotless clothing of the bed on which she lies, is the smooth skin of that fair creature, just budding into womanhood, and in that transition state which presents to us all the charms of the girl -- almost of the child, with the more matured beauty and gentleness of advancing years.
Y'all.
I had read a lot of Victorian literature by 2010—took graduate classes, even—and was too jaded to be as fazed by this quasi-Lolita mess as I maybe should have been. I remember reading this and thinking, "Yeah, that's standard. Goes on a bit, though."
Having established Flora Bannerworth, Victorian Lolita (she's the only person with any sense for several chapters, don't hold it against her), the story starts to ramp up. Flora sees "a figure tall and gaunt, endeavouring from the outside to unclasp the window" in the next flash of lightning. She's not sure what she really saw; it turns out that the literary point of the hail is that she can't tell if the sound she's hearing is ice raining down on her gothic mansion or vampire fingernails trying to claw the window open. And like, who thinks "Obviously, a vampire is trying to get in"? She saw it so clearly, and yet, storm, darkness, hail, she could just as easily explain it away—how did Ann Radcliffe differentiate terror from horror? Basically, terror is the dreadful lead-up and horror is the shocking revelation? So we switch here from the horror of OH SHIT VAMPIRE AT THE WINDOW back to the dread of waiting to find out what it really was.
Around this point in the original post, I pointed out that there are four elements you might see in a vampire story: the Appearance of the Vampire; the Attack of the Vampire; the Victim's Consumptive Suffering; and the eventual Destruction of the Vampire. You see these pretty reliably in Dracula, for example; you see them subverted in Interview with the Vampire, where the vampire is eventually destroyed by fellow vampires, but then it turns out he wasn't, and he goes on to be vampire king and see Jesus and mess around with the Devil and Atlantis is involved, idk I didn't keep up with those books after the one with the body-thieving. In this particular chapter of Varney, we get the first two elements, and they are honestly very effective: "Frozen with horror!" I said. "Heart beating wildly! The strange reddish light from a burning mill in the distance! The vampyre's nails clattering against the glass as it seeks to open the latch! She tries to scream but cannot to move, but cannot! Her cries for help are but hoarse whispers that no one can hear!" And then:
(I want you to remember Lord Ruthven's "dead grey eyes" here:)
The figure turns half round, and the light falls upon its face. It is perfectly white perfectly bloodless. The eyes look like polished tin; the lips are drawn back, and the principal feature next to those dreadful eyes is the teeth the fearful looking teeth projecting like those of some wild animal, hideously, glaringly white, and fang-like.
(Sidebar: This is apparently the first appearance of the word "fang" in vampire literature.)
It approaches the bed with a strange, gliding movement. It clashes together the long nails that literally appear to hang from the finger ends. No sound comes from its lips. [...] The glance of a serpent could not have produced a greater effect upon her than did the fixed gaze of those awful, metallic-looking eyes that were bent down on her face. Crouching down so that the gigantic height was lost, and the horrible, protruding white face was the most prominent object, came on the figure. What was it? what did it want there? what made it look so hideous so unlike an inhabitant of the earth, and yet be on it?
Here I am, making a very good point while being gleefully insensitive:
Panting, repulsion, heaving bosoms, etc. And then begins the slow agony of Flora oozing across the bed in her attempt to escape. Hair streaming (slowly) across the pillows, covers dragging (slowly) behind her, until she gets one foot (slowly) onto the floor. This is one of the few times the paid-per-word aspect works in Varney's favor—it has the endless creep of a nightmare, so let's take a moment to bask in a brief ray of quality. Undaunted by effective writing, the vampyre reaches her and drags her by the hair back onto the bed; "Heaven granted her then power" to scream her head off. And thus follows the most awesome sentence I have yet seen in gothic literature:
With a plunge he seizes her neck in his fang-like teeth a gush of blood, and a hideous sucking noise follows. The girl has swooned, and the vampyre is at his hideous repast!
My Hideous Repast is totally the name of my new goth band.
And that was the end of my commentary on the chapter.
I'm torn here because I do think the writing in general is entertainingly overblown, and I do think "my hideous repast" is funny in the abstract. But what I don't understand—not to bring the room down, but I feel like it should be pointed out: when I started recapping Varney the Vampire back in 2010, I completely missed the fact that this opening scene is describing a sexual(ized) assault. Some readers might be really, really uncomfortable with this scene. Why did I not see this?
I came here to have fun and that would not have been fun?
I was approaching the serial from the assumption that it's silly and melodramatic, so anything that happened also would be?
This cover illustration did not exactly set me up to take it seriously?
Tumblr media
I was so used to the ravishment fantasies of gothic/vampire media that it didn't strike me as something unpleasant or unusual to read?
It was 2010 and we didn't necessarily question problematic angles as thoroughly as we do now, even though I was already critiquing Twilight in 2008 so that's kind of a bullshit excuse?
I still think the melodramatic writing is pretty funny in places and I'm not sure how I feel about myself for that?
I think at least some of my reaction actually does come from writing about Twilight from 2008 onwards. It was a vampire story that had a marked lack of Erotic Biting scenes, to the point where director Catherine Hardwicke had to add one to the movie: Bella's fainting-couch fantasy of Edward as a classically gothic vampire, which apparently involves shoe-polish hair.
Tumblr media
The mood 15 years ago (!) was, some people loved a twinkling repressed sparklepire insisting he mustn't touch his high-school ladylove, he mustn't! but he must!!, and other people were big mad about it. Reading Varney, it felt refreshing to go back to a "traditional" story and say, see, there is bloodshed and it's not sparklewashed and tame, that is what real vampiring looks like. And somewhere along the way, I think I lost sight of the fact that Twilight, for all its many faults, at least involves someone who enthusiastically consents to being bitten. Like, Bella as would-be victim consents when Edward doesn't; the big tension of the series is that Bella is always throwing herself at a hungry vampire who keeps running away from her.
Hey, you might say, in the midst of a cultural moment when everyone’s going wild over the bizarrely chaste story of a teenage girl and her guilt-ridden goody-two-shoes vampire boyfriend,
remember when vampires were actually scary and forced themselves on their victims?
wait what do you mean that's not great
By “not great,” I don’t mean that vampire villains are Problematic™ and should be banned from fiction. I'm saying, that's the point, that it's villainous to force a vampire bite on someone; that's what the horror of the situation is about. That said, one of the unique holds that vampires have on audiences is the moment when “force” becomes ambiguous—ambiguous for the characters, but when we consent, as readers and viewers, to seek out that ambiguity. Like, I’m here for vampires because of that, the psychodrama is the whole point for me; it’s not because I like watching people get chewed on. That ambiguity holds an audience-proxy tension between “I don’t want this” and “but I do want this.”
Case in point, Dracula attacking Mina in the original text: Mina is horrified to find that she’s compelled to submit despite herself (“strangely enough, I did not want to hinder him”), although that scene is heavily weighted towards “I don’t want this”—towards horror. A story like “Carmilla” has Laura feeling confused, conflicted, unsure of what’s even been happening behind the veil of her dreams: Do I want this? What am I even wanting? “Whatever it might be, my soul acquiesced in it”: more of a balance between want and not-want. Whereas Bella immediately wants to be bitten, end of, and spends three books chasing a vampire who is agog at how little she cares for her own life. It's... some kind of tension, for sure.
Thousands of words have been written about how this tension is tied to societal sexual repression, of course. And as the decades went on, as sexual mores loosened throughout the twentieth century and beyond, writers and filmmakers started saying, “Oh, the vampire’s bite is enjoyable and it doesn’t turn you immediately into a vampire, have fun.” (The U.S. seems to be moving politically back towards repression, which makes me wonder how vampire media might change soon.) And this is why Twilight feels like a metaphor for literal chastity: there are immediate consequences for being so much as nicked by a fang, and so all the eroticism is dialed down to teenage makeouts.
And so, in 2010, I was so busy enjoying the literary contrast between Twilight and a book where vampires actually bite people that I lost sight of the fact that what happens to Flora is a particularly cruel and vivid assault. I mean, getting dragged by her hair, Jesus Christ, why was I not more disturbed by that?
What this then makes me ask, though, is how did readers in 1847 take this?
Who was this written for?
Readers who would identify most with Varney—attacking Flora, which is awful, but the action as written is extremely callous?
Readers who would identify most with Flora—being attacked, which suggests a "horror is a safe roller coaster" framing?
Readers who wouldn't really identify with either of them, but instead might picture it as a stage play?
Given that Polidori's Lord Ruthven set off a "vampire craze" onstage, I lean towards the third option. It takes a certain bystander detachment to read this scene and not think of its reality—to empathize—at all. And my "lmao this is so silly" is, in fact, a form of detachment. But all three of those options are possible, all at once.
So: is this opening chapter intended to be funny? (Subsequent chapters are far more intentionally humorous, and I had doubled back to recap this after reading ahead.) Are we meant to laugh, or is the outdated style only unintentionally funny now?
Is it satirizing earlier vampire literature/theater on purpose?
Is humor a way of making it easier to read a scene like this?
Is it not a good thing, really to make a scene of assault "easier to read"?
Did I, a reader who would identify with Flora, need it to be easier to read?
Is it okay to have multiple, conflicting reactions to something?
The only answer I have is "Yes," to that last question. And the only thing I know to do with conflicting feelings about media is to accept them and say, as a data point: here they are. There’s a level to this first chapter that I completely did not grasp 12-13 years ago, when I was 30+ entire years old, and I'm still not sure why that is.
I do think Varney the Vampire is frequently pretty funny; weirdly, the subsequent chapters read like a parody of Dracula if everyone in Dracula except one (1) heroine was completely useless, 50 years before that book was even written. Flora might be the victim in this chapter, but she is not the butt of the jokes. But I guess what we need to think about is—if this book is meant to be parody, why is it funny, who is it making fun of at any given point, and what purpose does that serve?
At this point, the antiquated style is what’s funny to me, and I’m making fun of Rymer. Did Rymer intend his readers to find the opening chapter funny? Maybe not: I think he intended it, certainly, to be titillating, even exploitative—and I was aware of that, but maybe not enough.
We'll resume with Varney trying to get over a garden wall. It will be a shorter, lighter post.

What if every time a Yuu has failed, the timeline resets and another Yuu is summoned? Additional Points/Theories
Continuation of this post
(Edit: Repost because it was not showing up in tags)
So, I was talking about this theory with @amys-curious-wonderland yesterday and they brought up some great points. 🌺💕
There’s also the theories of how twsted wonderland could be the afterlife right? So, what if, that's one of the only ways to summon the Yuus? By them “dying”? we saw that carriage-sama came ran over for both Yuuken and Yuuka, and I believe Yuuya had a similar experience. Our yuu doesn’t remember how they got there, but we remember a hand reaching out and a carriage too. all the Yuus also woke up in coffins.
then it brings us back to the twst characters, maybe they are ‘dead or close’ to it, hence everyone in twisted wonderland and Yuu is the one to essentially save them.
As Amy mentioned, twisted wonderland could be like Alice in wonderland with the parallels with reality. Maybe, by saving each OB, the boys are awaken back in their world. Like how Alice is, and both are forms of wonderland no? and it is also a form of saving them.
personally, I think that trope might be done before but, given yana’s ability to story-tell, I wouldn’t put it past her to put a spin on it.
as previously stated, maybe its all the yuus in the yuuverse helping our game!Yuu through memories/experiences.
Like yuuken won against riddle but lost against Leona -> yuuka won against Leona but lost against azul -> etc.
(and maybe yuuya was the one to go the furthest?)
but also, as @nabijay mentioned, this could also account for what Silver mentioned in the character intro, “It’s strange...I feel like I have met you somewhere before”
What if Silver is talking about all the yuus? We don’t know his unique magic yet but we know he has parallels and some sort of connection to the prefect.
as for book 7, we know that they are going to do something different with it just what, we dont know. but that could be a factor too.
as Yuu has visions of chimera grim maybe, it is our yuu who has to stop him or maybe Grim is the turning point/cause of this loop too (or Crowley, malleus?)
and they implemented the retry feature
it could just be a feature but what if, we added that to the lore? What if the retry feature is timelines diverting? or AUs? Because of the choices made or will be made? and how that can affect the time line/loop too.
Or the Retry could be all the Yuus in the yuuverse and the retry is literally the time loop/reset.
personally, I would love it if we can do a “going between worlds” kind of trope. but the possibilities are endless.
what if I went darker? What if the only way to stop the time loop/reset
is by killing Grim? or even the Prefect? both? since they are “2 in 1″ after all

Devil's Nest Gang:
semi-immortal homunculus fleeing his terrible family. the handful of government experiments he rescued from a lab to be his minions. the various humans, cast out by society, who came to work for him under his protection. the tragedy that they all faced in the end together, protecting each others backs until the end, and the realization after all was said and done that a group of close friends was all he ever wanted... greed and his chimeras are THE found family of all time. fma is full of family relationships, both biological and not, but theres something especially resonant to me about greed escaping his birth family and finding kinship in the shadows with his fellow outcasts, all of whom love him just the way he is. something something lgbt metaphor. they dont get much time on screen but their impact on the series is huge, and in particular bidos undying loyalty to greed is what brings back his memories after hes been "purified" and winds up setting the scene for the entire final battle. there is so much sadness but so much love. all of them would and Did die for one another. roa and dolcetto sacrificing themselves for martel, martel dying in a last-ditch bid to avenge them, bido dying out of trust in greed even after everything about the situation should have told him not to, greed eventually dying to save his NEW friends... they make me cry! do you ever lay in a puddle of your own tears and think about a bunch of furries at a gay bar. i do.
Shepherds:
They’re just a bunch of neurodivergent mercenaries gathered by a himbo prince, who are tasked to save the world and their descendants from the apocalypse.

I don't really do predictions but I want to put this out there in the very off chance that it might turn out to be true
Conspiracy theory: Touya always had the genetics to regulate his internal temperature, though on a smaller scale than Shouto. We know that Phospor works with Shouto's heart as a catalyst
Tumblr media
That brings balance to both halves of his quirk.
And the thing is, Dabi doesn't have an ice quirk (and likely won't pull one out of his ass now of all times), but he's a chimera too. He has an ice constitution and a fire quirk. His body is already engineered for the cold. Who's to say he cannot circulate chilled blood to counter his internal heat as well?
I think that's how he survived Sekoto Peak, and how he remained alive even after sustaining expansive burns all over his body a second time. Horikoshi went extra out of the way to point out the oddity that was his survival, so there's definitely something more to it than just... A spite strong enough to best death.
I think that Touya, too, has a trigger to cool himself down, but neither Touya nor Enji consciously realized it yet.
Tumblr media
Quirks can evolve, if the right "catalyst" triggers a change in their inner workings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A catalyst like... Touya's crazy strong will, for example. A will so strong not even AFO could bend it. After burning up at Sekoto Hill, we see Touya chant "I don't want to die. I don't want to die, " thinking of how he's yet to show his dad what he's really worth. I guess what I'm saying is: if quirks can get "liberated" and unlock a next level under the right circumstances, like an extremely stressful situation, then what best stressor than burning yourself alive and finding out in a panic that you cannot turn off the heat? Being on the brink of death has already worked as a catalyst twice now: think of Tomura and Toga in mva and the power ups they unlocked as a result. It wouldn't be too farfetched if Touya, too, got a quirk awakening in such a circumstance.
I can see this fitting into the Todofam narratives for one major reason.
Enji was really quick to discard Touya as a failure. I have a different post dissecting this but it happened over the course of a handful of months. Touya manifested his quirk around 4, and had already been replaced months before his 5th birthday.
Tumblr media
Enji's rushed judgement makes sense when you consider that what he was after was a heir that could counter the overwhelming heat that builds up within his body, thus nullifying the flaw that Enji felt was responsible for never being strong enough to beat All Might.
Tumblr media
In light of that, it's obvious that dissuading Touya from using his quirk was not the real reason Enji kept having children. That was just an excuse. It's Enji himself that admits the real reason: Touya will never be the one to surpass All Might, because Touya not only inherited Enji's overheating, but he also reaches an internal boiling boint much sooner than Enji.
Adding to that, Enji was pigheaded about besting All Might through brute force, and as such, he only ever taught Touya how to turn up the heat:
Tumblr media
So it stands to reason that with this type of training, even if Touya did have the genetics to cool down his internal temperature, he simply wouldn't know how to.
I think there's a chance that by the end of the series, Horikoshi will turn the narrative that Touya was a doomed failure on its head, and show us that it was less adverse fate and more arbitrary choices that ruined Touya's bright future. This idea has already been introduced by chapters 351 and 352, with Shouto's stress on choosing your path and Dabi's stubborn belief that you can't change the tracks of your life once they're set for you.
Building off of that, if it turned out that Touya had the "right" potential to become "a masterpiece", then it doubles down on the idea that it's Enji's choice to discard him so easily that doomed his son to this much suffering, and not some inherent "flaw" that Touya has no control over. It's not a predetermined fate but a choice, and choices can be corrected.
This would work in favour of both Dabi and Enji's character arcs: it would prove Dabi wrong about predetermination, it would give him a way to eventual recovery, and it would teach Enji that forcing his kids to do things his way isn't necessarily what works best for them. In fact, it almost certainly never is. Shouto reached peak self actualization when he explored his way of doing things, independently of his father; Touya never had that chance. Enji could've realized that Touya had the ability to cool himself down after all, if only he'd let his eldest train in a way that wasn't an exact replica of his own moves. If only he didn't focus so hard on turning up the heat.
So. I think we might be on the way to discovering the true extent of Dabi's quirk. Chapter 353 shows a glow appear on Dabi's chest where Shouto's Phospor hit. It's not over Dabi's heart, but it's the middle of his chest, just like how it was for Shouto; it could be symbolic to the two halves of his own quirk.
Or maybe I'm reading too much into this and it's just an addendum of Shouto's move, lol. Maybe Shouto's attack has some medical properties like everyone's been speculating lately, and it triggered some tissue regeneration in his brother. That's a possibility! I'm not completely discarding the regen route, but if that's what's happening, I don't think the source is necessarily Shouto. If it was, then that still wouldn't explain how Touya survived Sekoto Peak and the years after. He didn't have his little brother, then. No, I think, and I might be completely off base of course, that Touya always had this dormant side of his quirk inside of him, but he never actually used it intentionally, or was even aware that he did possess it.
It doesn't even have to be the ability to cool himself down; I'm leaning towards that because it's the only thing that explains his survival. But it might just be that his chimera genes give him the chance to make fire that doesn't burn him, just like his little brother. If that's the case, then one way to recovery for him could be Shouto teaching him how to summon it consciously. I would greatly prefer this to the route of Touya never using his quirk again "for his own good." That never sat right with me — it just seems another way to reinforce the abuse he suffered as a kid, and imho it negates the idea that society was wrong to force him into giving up. And while I'm a fan of Dabi receiving treatment for his injuries, I also think the regen route doesn't provide a long term solution for the problem that his fire burns him. It would only work like a safety net in case he exceeds his body's limits again. He'd still need to either give up on using his quirk, or get support gear and limit its use as much as possible. But Horikoshi never struck me as the type to say "hurting yourself is fine so long as you can get healed afterwards." Look at Deku!
On the other hand, if Dabi learned a way to make fire that doesn't involve self-harm, he could be free to explore his identity the way Shouto was able to, and find worth in himself and his quirk that isn't attached to his father's legacy. That's what I'd like to see, personally, so that's my prediction
That's not to say I think it will 100% happen! I just think it would be really neat if it did

write a story about (y/n) finding an injured Meruem (fro the anime Hunter x Hunter) after is fight with the chairman of the Hunter association. (y/n), not knowing who she is, decides to help and uses her healing abilities to save his life.
Tumblr media
A Tender Melody
In the heart of the secluded forest, (Y/N) continued to tend to Meruem's injuries and assist him in his recovery. As the days passed, their connection grew stronger, and the once-mighty Chimera Ant King found himself drawn further into the enigmatic world of human emotions.
Under the gentle care of (Y/N), Meruem's injuries gradually healed, but it was the mending of his heart that was the most profound transformation. His vulnerability and newfound emotions were perplexing to him, and he struggled to comprehend the profound changes occurring within his being.
"(Y/N)," he spoke her name softly one evening, his voice carrying an almost childlike innocence, "I do not know what I am feeling. It is as if my heart, once hardened, is now… thawing. What is happening to me?"
(Y/N), sitting beside him, looked into his eyes with understanding. "Meruem, you are experiencing emotions, something every human knows well. It's not a weakness but a strength, a testament to your capacity for change and growth."
Meruem's crimson eyes, once filled with a sense of invincibility, now revealed a vulnerability and curiosity that intrigued (Y/N). They began to share stories of their pasts, their dreams, and their perceptions of the world. Meruem's inquiries about the intricacies of human existence were met with patience and warmth.
With each passing day, the forest's beauty and the bond between (Y/N) and Meruem deepened. They explored the wonders of nature together, and (Y/N) introduced him to the world of music, playing her favorite tunes on a small, portable instrument she had brought with her.
The melodies she played seemed to resonate with Meruem in a way nothing else had. The music carried emotions he had never before encountered, and they touched his heart deeply. It was as if (Y/N)'s music became the bridge between their worlds, allowing Meruem to express his emotions through the power of melody.
One evening, Meruem stood beneath the forest's canopy, his crimson eyes focused on the horizon. (Y/N) joined him, playing a soft, soothing melody that echoed through the trees. The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a breathtaking palette of colors across the sky.
In that serene moment, Meruem turned to (Y/N), his voice quivering with sincerity. "I want to protect this place, our sanctuary, and the melodies that have awakened my heart."
(Y/N) smiled, her eyes filled with warmth. "You're already doing that, Meruem, simply by being here and sharing in the beauty of this world."
Meruem's transformation, once marked by his insatiable hunger for power, had now culminated in a different kind of strength—an emotional depth and a yearning for understanding. He didn't know how to label it, but he was captivated by (Y/N), who had shown him the profound beauty of the human experience.
Their connection deepened, and the tenderness of their bond blossomed. They laughed, shared stories, and embraced the world's wonders together. Love, an emotion once foreign to Meruem, became a powerful force in his life.
One day, as they stood near a crystal-clear stream, Meruem found himself struggling to express his emotions. "I feel something for you that I cannot define," he admitted, his crimson eyes fixed on (Y/N). "It's as if my heart aches when you're not near. What is this?"
(Y/N) took his hand and looked into his eyes with a gentle smile. "Meruem, what you're feeling is love. It's a profound and beautiful emotion that binds people together. And I feel the same way."
In the heart of the forest, amidst the rustling leaves and the soft melodies of the stream, (Y/N) and Meruem's love story continued to unfold. Their love was a testament to the transformative power of emotions and the enduring strength of the human spirit.
As the days turned into weeks and weeks into months, (Y/N) and Meruem's bond deepened, their love growing stronger with each passing moment. The once-mighty Chimera Ant King had not only healed physically but had undergone a profound transformation, becoming a protector of the forest and a guardian of the tender melodies that had unraveled his heart.
In the quiet embrace of the forest, their love story became an enduring testament to the power of human emotions and the extraordinary capacity for change and growth, even in the most unlikely of hearts.

Gehenna Worldbuilding Draft 1 (with some canon divergence)
Author Notes: this is for fun, don't mind me, I'm just having a spiraling from a hihi haha moment of thinking about Minhyeok's kink to writing this 4.2k words mess. Idk how I got here. ✎﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏
(At Gehenna's capital city, Malebolge - 8:40 AM IST - Time of Dawn's Embrace)
"So Minhyeok secretly stole your underwear, Miss Raon?" Ppyong needs to control himself. He shouldn't make assumptions about his best friend. Miss Raon only said that her underwear sometimes went missing before miraculously appearing in her cupboard again. At Minhyeok's house. Minhyeok is a super organized and charismatic guy. The cowardly pretty man who can't even show his best friend how those white juices are made. However—
If that is true? Minhyeok would have the worst teasing he ever had in his life from Ppyong and maybe a bit of bullying for his (possible) sneaky and perverted behaviors. Not that he has any ground to stand on, but he wouldn't miss that chance to make fun of Minhyeok. His idiot friend has been hard to read lately. It is hard to know what is going on in that guy's head anymore.
"W-Well! I wouldn't say he 'stole' it per se…" the lovely lady with violet hair who is sitting across from him, nestled between Sir Leraye and Sir Paimon, blushed in embarrassment and tried to think for her next words as the three men patiently waited for her. Until the waitress with curled pink horns on either side of her head and wide deer-like eyes with slits in them comes over to get their orders, her jovial voice as light and dulcet as usual.
"Good days to you all, esteemed patrons! What can I get you today?"
They're sitting in the most well-known bakery in Gehenna, called "Delights Bakery", which specializes in crafting decadent desserts and pastries inspired by the fiery landscape of Gehenna. It has been around for a long time; they still stand strong even in the midst of war. They offer a wide range of treats including Chimera Molten Cake, Vesuvius Tiramisu, Ojoshew Panna Cotta, Brimstone Biscotti, and Fairy Dust Cannoli Gelato.
The bakery provides a cozy and welcoming atmosphere where customers can enjoy freshly baked goods alongside a cup of fiendishly delicious coffee or tea. They also offer custom cake designs for special occasions like birthdays, weddings, and anniversaries, allowing customers to personalize their desserts to suit their tastes.
Ppyong's personal favorite from this place is Brimstone Biscotti, a devilishly delicious treat that pairs perfectly with a cup of the place's signature Infused Fire Coffee. These crispy almond biscotti are infused with the smoky aroma of brimstone from the eastern plantation of Gehenna and studded with common sparkling chili flakes, creating a bold and intense flavor profile that is sure to awaken anyone's senses.
"Alrighty! Your orders are coming right up, please be patient!" With a cheerful hum, the cute waitress walks back to her station with slightness in her hooves-like legs with blossom fur. A misleading appearance to a devil that ruthlessly stomped on several angels' heads yesterday and handled almost everything here before help came. She even asked to keep their bodies for new recipes.
Once they finished their orders, Sir Paimon reserved an order of Mystic Amaretto Affogato to give to Sir Astaroth since they would meet after this meet-up. They got back to the topic.
"I most likely forgot to wash them and... just left them around. He often does my laundry anyway when he comes over to visit, but…"
Sir Paimon's beautiful and cheerful voice adds, "There'sss stillll a possibilityyyy he isss usingg it forrrr his ownnn pleasureee withoutttt telling youuu, if sooo, don't youuu thinkkk he needed a bitttttt of a scoldinggg?", he ends his statement effortlessly cute with a wide playful smile, his heterochromia blinking innocently as if he didn't just accuse Minhyeok of wrongdoings, and his pretty long lashes flutter above his cheekbone like two pairs of Ethereal Emberwing to Miss Raon as if seducing her to agree.
"I- I mean he could be- No wait! He wouldn't! He never showed any signs that he would use them for anything other than washing them for me," Miss Raon said with a bright red face as she tried to defend her best friend's honor now that the conversation turned into this, unlike how she first brought it up.
"Then shouldn't he be more straightforward with you? I don't think it is a problem if you're ok with it. Shouldn't he be more honest with his temptation?" Sir Leraye innocently pulls the topic back where Paimon wants it, and his charming face frowns as he closes his eyes, deep in thought.
"Even I wouldn't say I wash his underwear for him in his face! It would be embarrassing! And it would be more believable if he said he liked women's fashion instead."
"Huh? Minhyeok do aye?" That is a surprising twist, though it seems more unexpected in Ppyong's opinion since he knows Minhyeok did ask for Miss Raon's panty for his white liquid creation process.
"Minhyeok doesn't seem like that kind of guy aye, I've never seen him show any interest in dresses and makeup too aye. If anything, I think he hugged his baseball bat in his sleep aye," like a good friend, he keeps that to himself and emphatically looks up to Miss Raon in consolation as the chance that her best friend is sniffing her panty in secret is more likely than ever.
"I'm telling you it's not like that!-", her sentence was again cut off by the bright voice of the waitress, "Sorry for the interruption! Here are your orders!" Without looking at the table, she still expertly set out their meals in the right order while smiling happily at them, "While I would love to listen to this lively conversation, I got more tables to serve. Enjoy yourselves, fellas!"
"Thank you!" they all said in unison at the preceding figure of the waitress before excitedly digging into their desserts. Ppyong's cartoonish eyes light up with anticipation, and he can feel the drool from his mouth. He reaches eagerly for the plate of Brimstone Biscotti. The aroma of roasted brimstone and dark chocolate wafts up to his nose, and he can't resist taking a bite immediately.
With a satisfied grin, Ppyong chews slowly, savoring the rich flavors dancing on his taste buds. "Mn! As delicious as always aye!" he remarks between bites, crumbs scattering on the table with each enthusiastic gesture.
Sir Paimon, the refined gentleman that he is, delicately lowers his spoon into the Ojoshew Panna Cotta. The creamy dessert yields with a gentle resistance before surrendering to his touch, letting him savor each scoop with a pleased and graceful smile.
"Mnhmmm, thisss is perfectttt forrr this fineee weatherrr, isn't itttt?"
On the other side of the table, Sir Leraye's enthusiasm knows no bounds as he plunges his spoon into the Fairy Dust Cannoli Gelato. His eyes sparkle with childlike delight as he unearths the hidden treasures within the velvety layers of frozen delight. His sunny expressions bring peace to the hearts of everyone who witnesses it.
"Yeah! It has been a while since we got to hang out like this and with Raon too! Oh! This is the first time for you isn't it Raon? What do you think?"
Between the two attractive devils, Miss Raon picks up her Vesuvius Tiramisu, her eyes marveling at its intricate presentation. The dessert resembles a miniature volcano, with layers of sponge cake and creamy mascarpone erupting from the center. She takes a tentative bite, and her eyes widen in surprise and delight as she savors the decadent dessert.
Her expression mirroring the awe of a child experiencing something magical for the first time. "This is incredible," she murmurs, her voice filled with genuine amazement. They all smile at her quiet joy and let her enjoy her meal as they begin to talk among themselves.
As Sir Leraye and Sir Paimon delved into their discussion about future assignments, their voices took on a bit more serious tone, yet their postures and actions felt relaxed and full of confidence.
Sir Leraye took a thoughtful bite of his dessert, savoring the creamy sweetness before chiming in, "You know, Paimon, after this, I'm thinking of heading over to Sulfur Springs. The streets are always lively there and my men have been struggling quite a bit recently. Do you want to join me after you meet up with Astaroth?" Sir Leraye seems sheepish as he subtly requests Sir Paimon's assistance.
Sir Paimon gently tilted his head, and a few strands of his silky blonde hair softly fell over his right eye, his gaze composed as he thought.
"Sulfurrr Springsss, huhhhh? Thattt doess sounddd enticingg. Buttt I've gottt myyy sights settt on Shadowspireee attt the Tailll of the Wolffff. I heardd there's hasss beennn some spewinggg commotionn undergrounddd in thattt nightt cityyy from Belialll"
With a false tired sign, he let his head fall gently on Miss Raon's head as he chewed on his spoon between his rosy lips. His pretty eyes are saddened as he looks at Sir Leraye.
"'mm soo innn trenddd latellyy. Evennn Hiss Majestyyy Satan calll for meee to thee southernnn provincess of Ashennn Citadelll tooo..."
Sir Leraye smiled in understanding and pat Paimon on the shoulder, "It's OK! It's just a suggestion! Don't worry Paimon, me and my men can handle it! So just focus on your work and enjoy spilling blood as usual!" the devil with the bright monocle said good-naturedly and lightened the mood with his light laugh at the last part.
"Awww~ Thankkk youuu Lerayeee~ You're a sweetthearttt as usualll~," Sir Paimon smiled sweetly back at Leraye and straightened himself up to look at Miss Raon, who had been drawn into the lively conversation between the two after she helped Ppyong slice the Brimstone Biscotti into a smaller size for him to eat.
"It'ss unfortunateee thattt we can'tt spenddd moreee timeee withhh youuu Raonnn. Don'ttt worryyy, we will droppp youuu with Zagan at Pitstoppp Plazaaa once we doneee, are youuu okkk with ittt?" Sir Paimon smiled kindly at Miss Raon as he asked her, and she smiled back in understanding.
"Of course! Please don't mind me and work hard. I also planned to ask for Zagan's help with my training today. Also," Miss Raon is now looking back at him, her face slightly red, "I will likely need, um, Minhyeok's 'thing' again. Ppyong, can you take the second portion of Vesuvius Tiramisu for him? He would like it."
A mix of eagerness and pride filled his heart. It wasn't just any task. It was a gesture of trust from someone he deeply respected. Despite doing so many times before, the simple thought of being chosen for such an errand brought a sense of validation, but also a touch of excitement to meet with his best friend!... and be rewarded with Fererere from the black-haired human.
"You can count on me aye!" With a proud grin and his chest puffed up, Ppyong determined to fulfill Raon's request with care and diligence. Also, Fererere is waiting for him!
Once they finished and dropped Miss Raon with Sir Zagan for their training, they parted ways and Ppyong made his way to the Teleportation Tower, or Nether Nexus Spire for fancy sake.
It didn't take long for Ppyong to see the towering building from miles away. The tower constructed from obsidian marble and adorned with intricate carvings of arcane symbols serves as the central hub for interdimensional travel within Gehenna. The tower is imposing and grand, with soaring spires reaching toward the sky of Hell. The exterior is adorned with flickering magic flaming bright chandeliers that dance along the edges of the tower, casting an eerie glow that illuminates the surrounding landscape.
Being a regular visitor, it doesn't take long for Ppyong to get past the inspection from the entrance and get in. At the heart of the tower lies a vast chamber filled with pulsating crystals of various hues, each one representing a different destination within Gehenna and beyond. These crystals serve as conduits for the teleportation magic that powers the gates, allowing travelers to journey to distant realms without getting themselves stuck somewhere in the void or getting wrecked from the torrent between spaces.
"Sir Ppyong! Good day to you!" a bright voice from the small goat-like devil rang over the hall before he saw the figure of Cock flying down from the third floor to greet him.
"To you too aye! Can you create a portal for me to Earth? I need to deliver something at Miss Raon's request aye," he said as they made their way to the vast ritual circle surface, etched into the polished obsidian marble floor. This circular platform serves as the focal point for the teleportation process, where technicians carefully select the appropriate crystal core to facilitate the journey to the desired destination.
"Oh? Another delivery? Miss Raon must cherish this human if she often sends him this many gifts!" Once the appropriate crystal is selected, Cock placed it in the center of the ritual circle, where it resonates with magical energy. The technician then channel his power, weaving intricate spells and incantations to activate the crystal and create the portal to the desired location.
"He is her best friend after all aye! Also, I should hurry too aye since Miss Raon will need his white liquid soon," he explained as the magic surged through the ritual circle, the air shimmered with otherworldly energy, and a swirling vortex of darkened hues materialized in the center of the circle. This portal serves as a gateway between realms, offering passage to those who seek to traverse the vast expanse of Gehenna and beyond.
"Of course, Sir Ppyong! Just a bit… Here you go! Have a good journey up there Sir!" With the portal open, Ppyong is free to step through and embark on his trip to Earth. Once he passes through, he is enveloped in a whirlwind of magical energy, his surroundings shifting and warping as he is transported to his chosen destination.
The boundaries between space and time blurred as he hurtled through the ethereal void, his body and soul becoming one with the primordial forces that governed the universe. Suddenly, the whirlwind dissipated, and Ppyong found himself facing the familiar sight of his best friend's room.
"Oomphf!"
The noise of his landing surprised the man sitting at the study table beside his bed. He lay there for a moment, gathering his bearings, and enjoyed the softness of the blanket. However, he could hear the faint sound of muffled laughter coming from humans, and when he picked himself up and was about to give Minhyeok a piece of his mind, he stopped in his tracks by the sight before him.
"Are you... Minhyeok's family Miss...?"
Seated before him is a vision of elegance and beauty, their presence commanding attention with every subtle movement. Cascading down their back like an ethereal waterfall, waves of lustrous black hair frame their delicate features with a natural allure, each strand glistening like strands of jet-black under the gentlest light.
A soft pink jacket, impeccably tailored to accentuate their statuesque frame, draped over the shoulders of their crisp white shirt. A meticulously tied white ribbon hair tie added a touch of sophistication to their ensemble. Beneath the jacket, a pretty pink sailor-style collar adorned with a dainty bow hinted subtly at femininity. Completing their attire was a soft beige-colored jean mini skirt, its hemline fluttering just above their knees, creating an image of effortless delicate playfulness.
Subtle touches of makeup enhance their natural beauty, accentuating doe-like black eyes framed by fluttering lashes that cast soft shadows against their flawless complexion and faintly blushing cheeks. Their lips, painted with a delicate hue of rosy pink, curve into a pleasant and serene smile, radiating warmth and charm.
Completing the ensemble are sleek white thigh-high boots, their glossy finish contrasting elegantly against the soft fabric of their alluring black socking. Warm clothing for the current cold weather on Earth.
A familiar snort of a man from the breathtaking beauty before him gave him a shock all over his red body. The man then averted his enchanting eyes from Ppyong, engrossed in his reflection in the mirror. The soft glow of the vanity lights illuminates his delicate features as he continues to meticulously apply his makeup with his slender hand.
The array of skincare and makeup products is meticulously arranged on the elegant desk before the man shows his progress. The room is filled with the light sweet scent of perfumes and creams, adding to the air of luxury and sophistication that surrounds his every movement. The soft rustle of brushes and the gentle click of compacts punctuated the air as the masculine voice rang out from the looker's fetching lips.
"How terrible, you couldn't even recognize your bestie?
"Hah?"
"Well, I wouldn't blame you. It's not every day people see this side of me. What do you think? You gave an eyeful earlier"
Ppyong's jaw practically hit the floor as he struggled to process the sight before him. His two black eyes widened in shock, and for a moment, he couldn't tear his gaze away from the breathtaking transformation of his best friend.
"What?!- What kind of shapeshifting sorcery is this?! Who are you and what have you done to Minhyeok aye?!"
He blinked rapidly as if trying to dispel the illusion before him, but Minhyeok remained seated before him, radiating an undeniable aura of grace and captivation. Gone was the familiar image of his friend in the casual and relaxed attire of a university student, replaced instead by this mesmerizing embodiment of a tall young attractive woman.
"I'm still me. This is just a practice for my friend's club drama performance. The leading lady's best friend role becomes empty because the girl has personal health issues and no one has time to take on another role. So I got the recommendation and the part"
Minhyeok explained as he gave his hair a fix-up and a once-over in the mirror. Minhyeok ran his fingers through his hair, flicking his wrist to fix a stubborn section that refused to sit properly. He peered at his reflection in the mirror, his dark eyes narrowed in concentration.
His fingers danced over his locks, deftly styling them into place. Each movement was precise and deliberate, like an artist working on a masterpiece. His face, usually relaxed and carefree, now held a touch of vanity as he admired his handiwork. The corners of his lips curved into a satisfied smirk as he gave his reflection one final once-over, the image of a spoiled young lady of a wealthy family getting ready for a night out reflected back at him.
"It's silly that they don't change the gender of the role and make me go around campus like this during the festival," he sighed, continuing, "but I do owe the club leader for that one time he helped me out." Ppyong didn't know what to think or feel now that he saw Minhyeok giving a cute little pout to himself.
"It's also best that I look like my own imaginary mute sister. A half-hearted effort would not help in the slightest"
At that moment, Ppyong couldn't help but marvel at the accuracy of Raon's suggestion to defend her friend, especially with how at ease Minhyeok was right now. They really knew each other like the back of their hands.
Yet Ppyong's mind raced with a whirlwind of emotions, ranging from disbelief to admiration. He couldn't help but admire the confidence with which Minhyeok carried himself, not bothered a bit by the girlish clothing he was wearing right now. It was beautiful and, for Ppyong, incredibly attractive.
Until he remembers what he's here for.
"Ah! That's right! The tiramisu, aye!" Opening the pocket of his stomach, Ppyong pulled out a box of Vesuvius Tiramisu that was bigger than himself and put it on the desk, sitting on it in front of Minhyeok, looking up and delighted as he got the attention from the gorgeous man above him. Though Minhyeok seemed to already guess who gave it to him.
"Miss Raon went out to have a snack with me and Sir Leraye and Sir Paimon today, aye! She bought a second portion for you and had me deliver it here!"
A radiant smile of pure joy illuminated his best friend's face, his captivating eyes brimming with tenderness and adoration. It was as if he were a devoted spouse receiving a long-awaited gift from his husband who is away from war, his cheeks flushing with a bashful delight as he attempted to conceal his beaming grin behind a delicate, carefully manicured hand.
Ppyong had to pat himself on the back as he marveled at the sight before him. His body shivered from a wave of longing washing over his entire being. Were there any other, lesser devils present to witness this scene, they would surely have shamelessly propositioned Minhyeok or openly leered at him. Perhaps the weakest of all would have boldly pounced on the ravishing man without a second thought.
"That girl, hehe, she should just worry for herself, risking her life down there but still has time for this? That dork, really..."
Ppyong could feel the love from Minhyeok's words as he opened the box and took a look inside, his smile pleased before closing the lids. Ppyong felt a surge of satisfaction knowing that he had managed to deliver Raon's thoughtful gesture to his friend.
"Thanks for having it delivered here, really, I appreciate it. It lets me know she's still well."
As Minhyeok expressed his gratitude, Ppyong's chest swelled with pride, his heart brimming with a new sense of joy knowing that he had brought a nice smile to Minhyeok's face.
"Hmph! Of course, this much is nothing for a great devil like this Ppyong, aye!" Despite his prideful words, he couldn't contain the childish giddiness swirling inside him at having the attention of this striking man, who often kept an invisible distance between them.
With a soft chuckle, Minhyeok put his face on his hand as he leaned on the desk. Ppyong couldn't help but take in the scent of light jasmine with a hint of soap and cotton underneath, and the proximity was making him tremble slightly.
"Sure, sure, you most likely came here for 'that'. I need to finish putting on the choker and earrings to take pictures in this. It will be quick, so just give me Raon's laundry and wait for me outside the bathroom."
"Can I help—?" His question was cut short before he could finish. "No," now the beautiful man coolly looked down at him and leaned back to open the drawer from his desk, taking out a black choker and silver heart-shaped earrings.
"Just be patient, or else I won't give you Fererere," the warning effectively shoved the protest back into Ppyong's mouth, and Minhyeok began to fiddle with the choker, trying to tie it around his pale neck.
"... Do you need help, aye?"
Minutes already ticked by as Minhyeok struggled in vain, on the verge of giving up in frustration. Suddenly, Ppyong's tiny crimson body darted over to Minhyeok's back. With an echoing pop, black smoke billowed from the point of contact, transforming into his high-ranking devil appearance. Surprising Minhyeok as his friend turned to look up at him.
"Just turn around, will you, aye? Come on, give that to me, aye."
Minhyeok reluctantly handed him the choker and Ppyong's hands deftly retrieved it from Minhyeok's grasp, his movements smooth and practiced. With a delicate touch, he began to gently secure the choker around his friend's elegant and seductive pale neck.
'Damn'
The choker rested against Minhyeok's skin, a dazzling accessory that added to his friend's already irresistible demeanor.
"See? You should just let me help, aye", before Minhyeok could argue, he quickly grabbed the earrings and stilled his friend's shoulder with his left hand. He let his gaze linger on the mirror before them, greedily taking in Minhyeok's flustered face as Ppyong towered over him.
As Ppyong delicately placed the shimmering earrings on Minhyeok's ears, a soft glow enveloped the room, accentuating the tension of the moment. Standing behind him, he caught a glimpse of his friend's reflection in the mirror, his features illuminated by the warm light. Minhyeok's black eyes met his crimson ones through the mirror, revealing a slight flush of pink spreading across his cheeks as he bit down on his lower lip in a gesture of bashful charm, unaware of the captivating allure he exuded at that moment.
'Fuck, he's lucky that it's me here and not other devils'
With a heavy gulp, Ppyong's muscles tensed as a wave of heat surged through his body, originating from the attractive man in front of him. Despite the tempting pull of desire, he resisted the urge and swiftly reverted to his usual Red Lump form once he was done, dispelling the charged atmosphere with the resounding volume of his voice.
"Ok! Here! Be done quickly and give me your white liquid and Fererere, aye!" he said quickly as he pulled out a bag of Miss Raon's laundry and threw it at Minhyeok's lap.
It broke Minhyeok from his daze, and he scowled beautifully at Ppyong before he gave an exasperated sigh and stood up from his seat. Ppyong expected everyone to understand his internal disappointment from not having the attention of the enticing man anymore. It didn't matter if it made him feel like those stuck-up devils from Hades.
"Fine, and wait for me to make some food for you to bring back"
"Sure! Hurry up then, aye!"
Minhyeok gave him a suspicious glance over his shoulder before retreating into his bathroom, the heels from his white boots clicking against the floor sensually, leaving Ppyong there on his bed. Once Minhyeok was out of sight, the red devil lay down tiredly as he dazedly looked up at the ceiling. The image of the vulnerable back of the pretty man lingered in his mind, wrecking him with arousal mixed with a good dose of guilt.
"...Crap, Miss Raon will not forgive me if she knows of this"
She would probably, very likely even without magic, squeeze him in her hands until he popped like confetti for even thinking of her friend like that.

Y'know, I find the character of Alinua to be immensely fascinating. Her whole life she has been cautious and avoidant, bearing the knowledge that at any moment she could go nuclear and Annihilation everyone in the general vicinity. She was even afraid of letting people touch her. But when she gained control of her powers, it's almost like the death of her character thus far. Like it almost feels that we've been following this specific character for a while, one with her own story and a general tragic "don't touch me, it's not healthy" schtick that we were beginning to expect throughout the story, and then BAM! That character has disappeared along with her grey eyes. And I say this because when they reach windcrest, Alinua seems almost foolhardy with her powers, healing a random person's arm, growing a gigantic-ass chimera fruit-tree (did she chimerize that tree btw?) and generally carrying herself with an ease she probably never felt before. And I think that if you took pre and post life-awakening alinua, even if you informed pre of the situation, she would be freaking out and panicking to see how reckless post is being. It really feels like two different characters. But then of course, if you had powers that threatened to destroy you and everything around you all your life and then one day they just started to be safe and easy, wouldn't you, especially at first, try to use them as much as possible. Whoa this is long
In my experience, overwhelming terror-induced caution can lead to an underdeveloped sense of proportion when it comes to threat assessment. If you grow up sealed away from everything with "danger" outside and "safety" inside, and then your danger is suddenly removed, you are liable to approach known safe scenarios and unknown threats alike with flippant enthusiasm, and recognized threats with overwhelming anxious caution, because those are the only two approaches you understand. Alinua's sense of caution has always operated like a boolean variable, and she was always willing to push the limits of what she thought was safe if she thought it would help someone. It's just not biting her in the ass anymore.

red dragons don't fly! they're wingless (though of course chimera falin has wings.. for some reason) great questions though 🤔a mystery for the ages
shit, you're right! i was accidentally mentally adding the chimera's wings onto the red dragon
(honestly, the presence of wings and feathers on that chimera just adds more questions wrt speculative biology. honestly in general i was wondering where the bird parts came from, i felt like i missed something when reading. like i think it said thistle added them so she wouldn't freeze or something, but how did that work? i had at first assumed they were from a harpy but that would have been mentioned if so. perhaps red dragons kinda "evolved" (or however monster species come to be) from a more birdlike species, and they had some vestigial shit goin on that being turned into a chimera re-awakened or something???)
