Gut Feelings I Have About Upcoming 2023 Films
based 95% on my intuition and 5% on the chatter from Cannes
Challengers is probably going to be very divisive (Guadagino seems to love to inspire controversy, and I got very strong “it’s either going to be your new favorite or you’re going to hate it” vibes from the trailer).
I would not be surprised if Killers Of The Flower Moon becomes widely considered to be in Scorsese’s top 3 once it’s released (I saw the Cannes reaction).
Cannes has also told me that The Zone Of Interest is probably going to be pretty incredible.
Maybe it’s just because I don’t love Vanessa Kirby’s casting (I think she’s a great actress, but Josephine was older than Napoleon and that was a contentious factor in their relationship) but I have a feeling that Napoleon is going to be disappointing.
I think that The Color Purple is going to be considered a great book-to-musical-to movie adaptation (all the factors are right, I feel).
Dune Part II is going to outdo its predecessor, I just know it (in terms of quality).
I think that The Killer is going to be well liked, but I don’t think it’s going to be Fincher’s new best.
I get the feeling that Poor Things is going to be great, but I also think it’s going to be one of Lanthimos’ more “mainstream” movies (in terms of it appealing to more people).
I think that Ferrari is going to be solid, but mostly an Oscar vehicle for Adam Driver.
Priscilla is either going to be Coppola’s best or absolutely terrible, there is zero in between.
I think that Next Goal Wins is going to be a good movie to watch with your family, but also just a nice good movie on its own.
Drive-Away Dolls is going to be a great time. That’s all I know.
Maestro is probably largely a directing/acting Oscar vehicle for Bradley Cooper (and he is going to be pushing an overdue narrative hard) but I don’t doubt that it’ll also be good.
I think The Holdovers is going to be widely well regarded, but I think it’s going to attract a small cult following where the people who love it really love it.
Finally, I think that Saltburn is either going to make or break Emerald Fennell’s directorial career, and based on the cast and summary, I’m leaning towards make.

WICKED LITTLE LETTERS (2023)
Starring Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley, Anjana Vasan, Joanna Scanlan, Gemma Jones, Malachi Kirby, Lolly Adefope, Eileen Atkins, Timothy Spall, Alisha Weir, Paul Chahidi, Hugh Skinner, Richard Goulding, Tim Key, Jason Watkins, Krishni Patel, Nikita Elle Jakobsen, Adam Treasure, Susie Fairfax, Jamie Chapman, Vinodini Patel, Amy Lee Ronaldson and Grant Crookes.
Screenplay by Jonny Sweet.
Directed by Thea Sharrock.
Distributed by Sony Pictures Classics. 100 minutes. Rated R.
There can be something wonderfully freeing about the use of profanity, particularly for someone who is caught in a repressive lifestyle. However, there is a cost in completely letting loose as well.
That is the moral behind this slight-but-amusing “based on a true story” British period piece.
Perhaps the most shocking part of Wicked Little Letters is that it was ever shocking. Of course, the world of small-town England about a hundred years ago is long gone. It’s interesting to look at what happened through a post-Twitter lens. Which is probably why this story of a serial poison pen letter writer in the quaint little village Littlehampton, England is portrayed somewhat comically, almost as a bit of a farce, even though at the time it was highly scandalous.
Olivia Colman plays Edith Swan, a highly repressed and highly religious spinster living in a small house with her domineering father and her proper, subdued mother. Edith’s life is a dull affair – she goes to church, spends time with some of the local women in things like sewing circles and playing card games, and spends much of her time passive-aggressively looking down on other people.
Suddenly, she starts receiving the foulest anonymous letters in the mail. Eventually, the letter writer spreads out and starts to send correspondence to other villagers, but Edith remains the main target of the profanity-strewn screeds.
Immediately suspected is her next-door neighbor, Rose (Jesse Buckley), an Irish immigrant, a widowed mother and a woman of somewhat loose morals for the time. (She works at a bar and is living with a Black man. And she is known to have a very salty vocabulary.)
Little things stood out to make Rose’s involvement in these letters a bit suspicious. The writer was obviously not really fluent in profanity – although filled with curse words and sexual innuendo, the insults really made no sense and the curses were usually used incorrectly, almost like someone was doing a Mad Libs book in which each blank space read “insert curse word here.”
Also noticed, but mostly ignored, was the fact that the handwriting on the letters was obviously different than Rose’s.
Still, the police are determined to blame Rose, even though the head constable acknowledges that from early on they did suspect someone else. However, it would keep up appearances to blame Rose, so she is jailed and put on trial.
Her case is taken on by Gladys Moss, the first woman police officer in the town. (In fact, every time she tells people she was a gendarme, she has to specify “woman” police officer.) She is also not taken seriously by the men in her station, who just expect her to write tickets and get them coffee.
Gladys and some of the women of the town feel that someone else is sending the letters, and they get together covertly to prove it.
Of course, the audience is clued in to the identity of the letter writer relatively early in the movie. (As a viewer, if you haven’t figured out who wrote the letters from the very beginning of the film, you’re not really trying.)
The rest of the film is an odd, but mostly funny, mixture of Monty Python’s Flying Circus and Law & Order: Victorian Unit.
Wicked Little Letters won’t win any awards or change anyone’s life, but it’s an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon.

Phantump Tiff/Fumu Bio
Tumblr media
I drew a bio for a Phantump Tiff/Fumu!
I redesigned her to have antler-like top branches and two additional smaller secondary branches. The eyes glow when using special attacks.
She and Tuff died about a 1000 years ago. Why 1000? I though the idea of them having died a very long time ago could be an interesting idea as they would have to adapt to the present day and the ruined Cappytown could be a contrast to how lively it was to how desolate and dead it is now and compare how different is it to "New Dreamland". (Mostly called "Dreamland" by it's locals.) She initially thought that Game Dedede (A many years long descendant of the Anime Dedede that helps Kirby to this day and is oblivious to his ancestor's misdeeds and acts of cruelty) was the Anime Dedede and gave him a verbal beatdown (or the closest to a verbal beatdown a Phantump can give) but realized the mistake. Even still, she wasn't convinced that Game Dedede wasn't any different and had to slowly see for herself how different he is to the Dedede she knew.
When it comes to game based info, she has a Adamant Nature (Not quite sure if I should change it) and I am not quite sure on the moves... Feel free to suggest any moves! Edit: I now have figured out the moves! They are as follows:
Safeguard
Phantom Force
Magical Leaf
Nature Power
These will sometimes change depending on the story, but these are pretty much the definitive moveset for her. I will probably make something to explain why these moves later.
I might draw some of the ref sketches as standalone art pieces...
Date Started: I didn't write down the date... Sorry!

INDIE SMUT RP (PLOT CENTRIC) - YOU MUST BE (PREFERABLY) 21+ TO ENTER PLEASE AND THANKS AND (AS OF 7/23/2023) I HAVE SWITCHED TO BETA EDITOR ONLY.
Tumblr media
Welcome everyone to my page! I am a mostly mutuals only blog, but if you see an open in the tags you’re more than welcome to answer it even if we don’t follow each other! Some of the best partners are found that way, but just know I might be selective at times when it comes to muse and such. PLEASE DON’T PESTER ME IF I DO NOT FOLLOW YOU BACK. YOU MAY ANSWER AN OPEN IF YOU SEE ONE, BUT IF I DON’T REPLY PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO GUILT ME. I HAVE THE RIGHT TO DO AS I PLEASE ON THIS BLOG, THE SAME AS YOU DO.
I play both female and male characters (there is an obvious lean towards females) and while I’m not here to say you have to double up with one of my girls to get my guys, just know those threads might come a bit slower at times. I don’t try to drop threads without at least making some sort of PSA post about it though, so keep an eye out for them if I don't come directly to you with it!
When it comes to pairings, all of my men are straight and a majority of my ladies are bisexual! Leading the bulk of my threads to lean either towards m/f or f/f, but at the time of updating this (7/23/2023) I will not be including m/m content on my blog in a sexual sense. I have nothing against it, but I will not write it I am sorry 🖤 When writing a starter though, I will always include the preferences at the top so there is no confusion.
All standard rules apply here, don't be a dick and we should get along fine. Discord is more likely to be given out to people whom I have plotted with a little bit at least on here already, I just have to know it’s not gonna flop and go nowhere within a day or two. That, and it is now the place where all of my kinkier plots go to be written as to spare the dash as much as possible.

Fictives? In our system? It’s more likely than you think!
DISCLAIMER: this is a post about our experience with fictives and our experience as a system with fictives in it! We are in no way trying to infer our experiences are the norm, nor are we stating any of this as fact.
Hiya! My name’s Ralsei, and I’m from @dreamlandsystem like Alucard and Kip! I wanted to make a post about the fictives in our system away from our main blog, and Kip and Kandi said I could post it here (especially since Kip is helping me write this post!). It might get a bit heavy, which is why I want to keep it off our main.
This post got longer than we were anticipating, so I’m putting it under a cut so people who don’t want to read this don’t have to scroll a bunch >w<
Our system has a few fictives. Our DID is covert, and not every member of our system is known yet to some of us, so I’m only going to reference the ones who have been introduced and know the other members of our system. That’s me, Cecil, and MK!
All three of us, and almost all the fictives in our system, were not fictives to begin with (with the one exception being MK). The vast majority of us split when the body was pretty young (we had a wave of splits as a toddler, then another wave at 12-14), and back then we had different ways of presenting and viewing ourselves. Our roles were still relatively the same and likely haven’t changed much at all, even if we’ve changed and grown as individual members since then. I’m going to talk a bit about how each of us differs as fictives and system members!
First off is MK. As far back as almost anyone in the system can remember, MK has been here! We were exposed to the Kirby series from a very young age, and Meta Knight was probably one of the first headmates to form. Meta Knight is cool and strong, with awesome bat wings and a sword and is a skilled fighter and protector! It makes sense that he was formed with the hope that he could swoop in, rescue us from our abuser, and carry us to safety. Meta Knight is semi-verbal, meaning he can speak very little, and for the most part chooses to remain silent. We’re not sure if this is an autism thing or a residual trait from when keeping very quiet was in our best interest.
Next is Cecil. Cecil is a fictive of Kim Kitsuragi from Disco Elysium, but he didn’t start out that way! Cecil is a symptom holder for our autism, along with being a “system therapist” (a term we have for system members who are rational thinkers, who encourage us to slow down and ask questions when we’re overwhelmed/paranoid/panicking). It’s kinda unclear how he functioned when we first formed (my guess is that he would get us to a safe/secluded place to stim, babble, and be ourself at a time when we would have been harmed for being ourself in front of our abuser). Cecil had a different form back then, but when our host was coming to terms with being a system, Cecil sort of imprinted on Kim from Disco Elysium. It just sorta happened. His voice, mannerisms, and looks shifted, and now the Cecil in our system is very similar to Kim! He changed his name recently as he’s trying to distance himself from his source, but he still identifies as a fictive and so I’m including him here (with his permission of course!).
And last is me! When we were younger I was… I guess you could call it a fragment? I didn’t really have a fully formed identity, and mostly I just held onto a particular piece of memory (which I’m not going to share here). Most of us in the system were this way, as our host was pretty adamant about violently shutting us down whenever anyone else in the system tried to make their presence known. As a result, a lot of us remained fragments until fairly recently (like the past couple years or so). From the moment we first played Deltarune, though, I knew I was Ralsei! My strong connection to him led the host to think they were fictionkin for a while, which I think is a pretty common occurrence in systems with fictives. Developing into a whole person (even if that person is a fictive) has been really helpful for me to find some self worth. Before I was Ralsei, I didn’t know who or what I was, and felt like my whole purpose was to just keep remembering and remembering the same awful thing over and over. But now I’m trying to be a good caretaker! Taking care of my system mates has been helping me take care of myself, too ^w^
Each of us have very different ways of being a fictive, but we’re still each important individual members of our system! I just wanted to share this to showcase the wide range of ways a fictive can form and take shape, even in our system alone! It make sense that other systems also have different ways that their fictives came about.
Thanks for reading everybody! We hope y’all have a great day!
- Ralsei (with help from Kip, Cecil, and MK!)

X-Men 57 (June 1969)
Roy Thomas/Neal Adams
As we saw yesterday, the Neal Adams era is altogether upon us. It was mere months ago that this book was composed of stiff four-panel layouts in bright primary colours, with each panel featuring a bunch of people pictured from the waist up, conversing with each other like talking heads on the TV news. Now issues open like this.
Tumblr media
The answer to "what's that??" is the Sentinels, but we don't have time to dwell on them because we're back to Egypt for Alex Summer's emotional crisis, which is like a Jack Kirby page if Jack Kirby had known how to draw human faces.
Tumblr media
Then the Egyptian police show up and, let's be real, it's all a bit insensitive (I'm actually not showing the grimmest bits). Hmmm.
Tumblr media
The Sentinels, however, are after Alex too...
Tumblr media
Look at this! There were hippies taking industrial amounts of acid the same month this came out who weren't seeing anything even half as interesting as this.
Tumblr media
It turns out - I'm skimping on story here to yell about the art - that Larry Trask is back, along with the Sentinels, in another defining bit of Adams work: he had some sort of fascination with, and gift for, television on the page, with all its distortions and possibilities: we'll see more of this in subsequent issues too.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately I do have to interrupt this to talk about the back-up feature of this issue. The last few issues have all had back-up features telling X-Men backstories, and they're mostly just too dull to really go into: they don't serve the ongoing story and they're very clearly filler. But this issue's one focuses on Marvel Girl and...yeesh.
Tumblr media
This is the first writing credit for a woman on X-Men! Ever! Yikes!
Tumblr media
Oh my god.
Tumblr media
Huh. Hmm. Huh.
Tumblr media
This is so fucking abominable. To be clear, all the other stories of this kind are stories. This is just a list of gags. And then it ends.
Tumblr media
So, that was kind of an issue of two halves, huh.

Why is the Bronze Age of Superhero Comics so overlooked compared to other eras? Obviously there are those who care about and analyze them, but it leads to situations like the Dark Age getting so much credit for what the Bronze Age was already doing (Case in point: Everyone crediting Frank Miller for bringing "dark noir-influenced Batman" back, even though O'Neil/Adams already did that over a decade earlier).
I personally don't like the concept of grouping comics by "ages" mostly because it's centered on a) superheroes, b) uses terms nobody used back then like nobody in the Silver Age called themselves the Silver Age, or the Bronze Age and so on. So the whole concept of Golden/Silver/Bronze age feels iffy to begin with, and also it kind of privileges the old over the new, like the names imply that "Gold is for ever Gold, or first place and so on..." when much of the golden age superhero comics were weak in art and dialogue. I'm not sure if the Bronze Age has been completely neglected though. I guess it doesn't get talked about online but certainly stuff like Kirby's Fourth World at DC Comics is quite a cult and is avidly followed. As is Gerry Conway's ASM run, Jim Starlin's Warlock. And Chris Claremont/John Byrne's run on X-men which ran from 1975-1980 (people often assume this happened in the 1980s for some reason). And Denny O'Neill/Neal Adams' work on Batman is still highly prized and influential in Batman fandom, and among Batman creators, as is the work of Englehart/Marshall Rogers. O'Neill's work on Green Arrow/Green Lantern is also talked about. Individual works from the era are prized but I guess people don't think of it as the Bronze Age?

King Dedede gijinka! So now, the full RTDL set is complete! (unless you count the other 3 kirbys. Idk how to portray them though, I don’t think they should just be recolored Kirby clones bc I like the idea that Kirby changes color when using abilities like in NIDL and Super Star... so it’d get confusing if the other Kirbys looked exactly like the main Kirby)
As you could probably guess, Dedede is the oldest of the group. I imagine he’s something like a father figure to Bandanna Dee (and all the other Waddle Dees perhaps, since they are mostly his henchmen). Unlike the other 3, Dedede doesn’t tend to dress lighter for adventures & usually just wears the same outfit. He is prone to changing hammers though, since he’s always open to improve his weapon’s functionality. The hammer he’s got here is actually pretty small by his standards, he usually prefers to keep a heavier one on hand.
I like to think of Dedede as a part-time hero, part-time villain. I think he’s capable of being a good guy when he wants to, and when Dreamland is in danger from an outside force, but... sometimes he just likes to cause trouble when things get too peaceful, because he finds it boring. LOL. Tbh I still like the idea that he’s the self-proclaimed king of Dreamland (like they didn’t have a monarchy before he arrived LOL) so I think I’ll keep it. Plus, clearly he’s at least semi-decent at being king, since even outside threats from elsewhere in the universe can recognize him as one (...even if they do end up kidnapping or possessing him because of it)! Also,
Tumblr media
Dedede is balding, so he’s really adamant about keeping the hat on, even underwater. Though I’m still trying to string together a kirby series timeline (Super Star, Squeak Squad, & Amazing Mirror are RLLY hard to place for me) I imagine Dedede used to have a full head of hair back in his old days (Dreamland thru Dreamland 3 perhaps? Since I imagine they took place in succession) but it eventually fell out over time. Perhaps as a result of stress from Dark Matter possession? since that happens to him a lot.
Speaking of the Kirby timeline, do you see Kirby’s Dreamland and Kirby Super Star Ultra’s Spring Breeze subgame as separate events or the same event? Personally, I think they’re different enough to be separate & perhaps when Kirby finds out about Dedede’s plan in Spring Breeze he’s like “HOW COULD YOU DO THIS AGAIN??” & Dedede’s like “I was bored, okay??!!” or smth lol

Thor (1966) - Vol 180 - Loki Comic Read Through
Classic Loki Masterpost:    Rating: Mod (Great)
Plot: Loki has switched bodies with Thor. Now with Thor’s body, Loki causes havoc on New York.
Favorite Moments:
Because Loki has Thor’s body, he decides to have fun and destroy stuff because he knows it’ll ruin Thor’s reputation.
Tumblr media
Loki-Thor uses Mjonar to destroy a truck.
Tumblr media
And rips apart a car.
Tumblr media
Loki is monologue-ing about how awesome he is and how much Thor sucks.
Tumblr media
Then Thor-Loki attack him with a Magic Beam.
I love to think that Loki is one of those villains who weakness is that he’s monologues. Like, if it’s an option between Winning and finally defeating the Good Guys, or Talking about how awesome he is for literally an hour to allow the Good Guys to stop him, Loki would choose the Later because he NEEDS the attention.
Besides, ruling over everyone is boring. Imagine all the BS you need to deal with.
So Jack Kirby stopped doing Thor comics (I think he retired, but I would have to look into it) and Neal Adams replaced him as the artist on this comic. Look at this panel.
Tumblr media
That is just fantastic artwork.
Odin is upset that Thor hasn’t brought Loki back to Asgard. I guess he likes to keep an eye on his sons, but not good of eye. Great parenting again Odin.
Thor-Loki and Loki-Thor continue to fight but Odin forces Thor-Loki to return to Asgard. And Odin sentences him ....
Tumblr media
To HADES!
I love how melodramatic this is.
Tumblr media
Loki-Thor goes Atomic and tells everyone has awesome he is.
Balder and Sif try to stop Loki-Thor, but he proves too strong for them.
Tumblr media
So Loki-Thor continues to talk about how awesome he is and destroying stuff. He is having a FUN Day. Finally, Loki’s plan actually work out. Good job Loki, I’m sure it will last this time.
Sif learns about Thor's punishment and Thor-Loki goes to hell, where he meets Mephisto.
Tumblr media
Mephisto is super excited to meet up with Loki because I guess Loki and Mephisto are Bros. I know that in more recent comics, Loki and Mephisto like to do dick-measuring contests to see who is more Evil. It’s like the closest to a “Healthy” Best Friend that Loki has at this point, besides his evil Girl-Friends and his other Fri-enemies.
However, Mephisto figures out pretty quickly that it isn’t Loki but Thor and is pretty bummed out by it. Naturally, this means that Mephisto and Thor fight.
Back on Asgard, Sif convinces the Warriors Three that Thor needs their help and the four of them venture to Hades to save him. This is what greets them.
Tumblr media
That’s awesome. It looks like a Halloween attraction. Like, “Welcome to Mephisto’s House of Horrors” or some non-sense like that.
When they arrive at Hades, they find Thor-Loki trapped in ice. How will they free him, find out next issue.
Thoughts on Comic:
This is the first Thor comic that Neal Adams did after Jack Kirby, and the Art work is great. It’s a bit of a shift from Jack Kirby, with Neal Adams generally having more details and giving characters much more expressive faces.
This comic is a great Fun time. Loki mostly spends the entire comic having fun, destroying and telling everyone how awesome he is. This comic doesn’t do much for Thor past setting up obstacles for him to get around. Mephisto gets an appearance which is pretty fun, and I love the “House of Horrors” entrance he has.

Ya know what these self-indulgent Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow posts need? Self-indulgent banner art, that’s what.
Tumblr media
Spoilers for issue #4!
Let’s start this off right with CREATOR CREDITS. Issue 4 of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is titled “Restraint, Endurance, and Passion.” Written by Tom King, Art by Bilquis Evely, Colors by Matheus Lopes, Letters by Clayton Cowles, and Edited by Brittany Holzherr. (w/ Assist. Editor: Bixie Mathieu & Senior Editor Mike Cotton)
THE STORY:
Right, so this? This issue? Best one yet.
Also the bleakest of the bunch thus far; even though we don’t always see the brutality of the space pirates that Kara and Ruthye are following, there’s...the suggestion of it. The aftermath. And how Kara responds to it.
Okay, getting a little ahead of myself. BASIC PLOT SUMMARY: Ruthye and Kara continue their pursuit of Krem, who has taken up with Barbond’s Brigands.
The Brigands basically just. Murder and terrorize people, for profit.
Each planet they visit brings new horrors, as well as people who need Supergirl’s help.
And help she does.
KARA-CTERIZATION:
I yell a lot about the art on this book, and have, in fact, openly admitted that I’m primarily here for Evely and Lopes.
Well, that wily son-of-a-gun King went and wrote some of the best ‘Super’ stuff I’ve ever read and dang it, dang it, now I gotta yell about the words too. XD
Specifically, I wanna yell (in a good way!) about some words that occur towards the very end of the book.
Kara and Ruthye have Seen Some Things; things like genocide and mass grave sites and horrible violence, and upon reaching a planet where peaceful monks were slaughtered, Kara’s had enough, and needs to leave because if she screams, she’ll destroy what little is left of the monks’ monastery.
Here’s the text in full, because my gosh. It’s so good:
“What I write next I write based on my observations in those long-ago days at the side of the greatest warrior in the history of this august reality we all call home. It is important to note that my assertions do not rely on anything Supergirl said. It was not a subject we ever discussed or even approached, but nonetheless I believe it to be as true as the turning of worlds. You see, what is not well understood about the daughter of Krypton is that her power was not one of action but one of restraint, endurance, and passion. She did not choose to fire a beam from her eyes, or have breath of ice, or run faster than a speeding bullet. Or any of her other well-documented miracles. No, she held back her heat vision to look you in the face. She warmed her breath to converse with you. She slowed herself to walk by your side. Ever moment of every day, she suppressed the forces churning inside of her. All of the energy of a dead world that strained against her many barriers, eternally demanded to be released. I believe this effort hurt her. I believe she lived her life in pain. But I reiterate again, for I think it important enough to repeat--These beliefs are based on my time at her side, watching her as she moved through strife and sorrow. If you were to have asked her, I have little doubt she would have claimed that such as assertion was absurd. She would say she felt fine and well and then she’d as you if you needed any help.”
A long chunk of words, I know (this comic is DENSE!) but like. This is it. This is one of the defining attributes of the Supers--all that raw power at their disposal and they choose to help people, to be kind, to suppress that power for the benefit and safety of others.
HNNNNNNNG.
Hope, Help, and Compassion for All.
Whole lotta folks claimed at the outset of this book that King did not understand Kara, that he was a bad fit. And that may be so, I suppose--there’s a whole other discussion about like. The violence and swearing and ‘does that belong in a Supergirl book?’ But the characterization? Getting that Kara and Clark are just good people?
King gets it. He got it in Superman: Up in the Sky and he gets it here, in Woman of Tomorrow.
Other things King gets! Kara is stubborn! Kara is passionate! Kara is going to fix things, even if the effort of doing so hurts her, physically, emotionally, and mentally!
(Fuuuuuuun fact for the crowd saying that Woman of Tomorrow is vastly superior to the CW show: TV Kara is ALSO all of those things! King isn’t pulling this stuff out of thin air. It’s almost like...gosh. I don’t know! Both the show and Tom King are pulling from the character’s comic history, or something!!!! HOW NOVEL.)
Like, seriously. There’s a lot of overlap. Stop pitting Karas against each other!
Tumblr media
Anyways!
I promised art, so here is art!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh, right, forgot to mention, Kara literally THROWS HERSELF INTO THE SUN to express her grief and anger, so as to not cause that unnecessary destruction. She gives new meaning to the phrase: Set yourself on fire to keep someone else warm.
More art yelling: GOTTDAMN, the way Evely draws Kara just colliding with the surface of the sun and then the way Kara’s hair like...becomes the flames...
I am FEELING FEELINGS. HOW DARE.
Also, props to King and Cowles; King for deciding to have that initial scream, Cowles for the way the letters burst forth from the point of impact on the sun, and then back to King who decided that it would just be...devastating silent screaming from Kara, for the remainder of the scene.
Back to the characterization, I just wanted to highlight something I mentioned...earlier on, I think? In these posts? But haven’t brought up recently, and that is how this book has not once brought up Zor-El, and I think Superman only got a quick mention in issue 2.
Honestly, I think that’s gotta be some kind of record.
It’s so refreshing. Not because I think there should never be mentions of Clark, or anything--I love that boy--but because so much of modern Supergirl comic drama is mined from the same like, angsting over her place compared to Clark, or her crazy sometimes-a-supervillain dad.
There is no Clark and Kara drama here, no manufactured friction, because it’s just. A cool Supergirl story!
Gonna keep going, but let’s do it with some more...
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTT!!!!
Once again, Mat Lopes is all over the dang place with his palettes, it’s marvelous.
Each new planet gives Evely the opportunity to go hog wild on the worldbuilding and design, and similarly! Each new locale is an opportunity for Lopes to set the tone with colors. Like, here, towards the beginning of the book, we’ve got a planet bathed in this warm, pale yellow/orange light.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Quick note: “Sure, yeah, I get it. We all have our duties. And it’s mine as a neighbor to do what I can to help you with yours. Please.” A+ Kara content. We love to see it. And then locating the remains of the alien’s daughter, so that they can go visit the grave site and have some emotional closure???? It’s just. So. Touching.)
Anyways, back to colors.
Tumblr media
Like!!!! LOOK AT THAT JUMP. From the soft, almost pastoral feel of the delicate oranges and yellows to HARD GREEN, PINK, AND PURPLE. (Difficult colors to pull off in print, I might add.)
(This is also an interesting scene, character-wise, because I think it helps re-contextualize some earlier stuff with Kara. Like, I’m mostly thinking that incident on the bus, where she was swearing at the passengers as the space dragon was about to destroy them. Here, we see Kara kind of...goad this alien woman into releasing her pent up emotions by yelling at her/getting her to fight, and you can clearly see at the end of it that Kara did not mean the things she said, because check this out:
Tumblr media
She goes and gives her a hug once the woman is able to finally cry.
It’s not ‘Kara is being mean, Kara is swearing at her’, it’s, ‘Kara has an unorthodox solution to a problem, and she’s gonna FIX that problem, NO MATTER WHAT.’
Circling back to the bus thing--again, that could be an instance of ‘unorthodox approach to a weird situation that Kara is going to handle because lives are at stake.’)
But also, DIG THAT KIRBY KRACKLE, BAY-BEEEEE!
And a little Strange Adventures easter egg! The Pykkts!
(I think those guys are unique to the Black Label series, rather than deep Adam Strange lore, but don’t quote me on that.)
Moving on to YET ANOTHER PALETTE, one I’ve dubbed, ‘Treasure Planet Purple/Grey’
Tumblr media
Love Ruthye’s snoozing against the door, waiting for Kara.
Also, just as striking as the colors of the environment, are the colors used on Kara.
If you compare this page with the previous one, Kara’s eyes are a paler shade of blue, and the red-rimmed look on her eyes here is not as intense as the red-rimmed look we saw back in issue one, when she was confronting Krem.
All of which to say! There’s a pale, haunted quality to both the linework and the colors. Like. We know Kara has Seen Some Things. But she’s shoving all that stuff down to protect Ruthye, to save Krypto, and to stop these monsters, and you get all of that WITH COLORS AND LINES ON A PAGE.
I love it, I love it so much.
OTHER BOOKS WISH THEY HAD THIS LEVEL OF CHARACTER ACTING, I TELL YA! THEY WISH THEY HAD THIS BEAUTIFUL ALCHEMY OF INKER, COLORIST, AND WRITER WORKING IN SUCH TIGHT TANDEM!
Ahem. XD
Alright, last bit of art, lest I just. Post the whole issue in here. (Which I’m honestly always tempted to do but Strong Feelings about Piracy hold me back.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
JUST HECKIN’ LOOK AT THAT BLUE, MAN. JUST LOOK AT IT. S’BEAUTIFUL.
And more stunning character acting from Evely. Like. Bottom middle panel. The expression, the tilt of her head and the shadows on her eyes...
*insert silent flailing here*
Oh, also, KRYPTO LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVESSSS (for now).
I’m never right about these things, so I’m glad the one time I’ve correctly read a thing is when it involves Krypto not, ya know. Being dead. XD
Also absolutely love that Kara’s instinct is to send Ruthye home to protect her--once more leaning into that whole, ‘I’m going to protect you, even at great cost to myself’, though of course we know that she can’t send her home, not here, not now, just halfway through our journey.
ERRRRRRGH, so mad we’re not getting twelve issues of this! CURSE YOU, POOR SUPERGIRL TRADE SALES! CURSE YOOOOOOU!
That said, King’s pacing? Has been phenomenal. I feel like Strange Adventures and even Mr. Miracle kinda...I’m not gonna say dragged, that’s not quite right. But it is more build up, I guess. Takes a while to get to the payoff.
Here, I think King is pushing things steadily along as he doesn’t have the benefit of an additional four issues, so he has to get to the point, so to speak. Keeps everything moving.
SOME FINAL, MISC. STUFF:
I’ve sort of glossed over the darker stuff from this issue, and I just wanna note that like. This is a book that features a bad guy getting stoned (in the death sentence way, not the drug way) on panel. Like. I can’t recommend this to children.
I can’t even really recommend it to some other Supergirl fans, because I know that the King elements will be too off-putting.
It never feels like the book is going too far, though. At least in like an...exploitative way? If that makes sense?
The violence is handled with discretion, I guess is what I’m trying to convey. This could very easily tip over into like, gross shock factor territory, if not handled well, but I think the creative team pulls it off.
...Still wouldn’t hand this book to kids, though. XD
As mentioned, we’re halfway through this series! Can’t wait to see where it goes--every time I think I have this book figured out, it surprises me. So, like. Bring on the Dinosaur planet! With no sunlight! I wanna see how Lopes handles THAT. XD
(But Oh, OooooOOooh, we gotta wait until NOVEMBER.)
(Hhhnnnnng!)
(Then again, maybe that’s good; we’ve got the TV show in the meantime, and then once it ends we can pick right up with new Supergirl content just a few weeks later.)
(...Aw. Made myself a little sad, thinking about the TV show coming to an end.)
:C
So as not to end on that sad note, here once again is tiny, smushed Kara:
Tumblr media
Give ‘em the ol razzle dazzle.

INDIE SMUT RP (PLOT CENTRIC THOUGH) - YOU MUST BE 18+ (PREFERABLY 21+) TO ENTER PLEASE AND THANKS
Welcome everyone to my page! I’m not new to indie, but have decided to come back after a long absence from the scene. I just missed it so much so I couldn’t resist anymore. I am a mostly mutuals only blog, but if you see an open in the tags you’re more than welcome to answer it even if we don’t follow each other! Some of the best partners are found that way, but just know I might be selective at times when it comes to muse && such. FOLLOWING THAT HOWEVER, PLEASE DON’T PESTER ME FOR THREADS OR REPLIES IF I DO NOT FOLLOW YOU BACK. YOU MAY ANSWER AN OPEN, BUT IF I DON’T REPLY PLEASE DO NOT KEEP TRYING. I HAVE THE RIGHT TO DO AS I PLEASE ON THIS BLOG. (ALSO DO NOT UNFOLLOW / REFOLLOW QUICKLY, I SAW YOU THE FIRST TIME.)
As of right now I play both female && male characters (there is an obvious lean towards females because I can’t help it) && while I’m not here to say you have to double up with one of my girls to get my guys, just know those threads might come a bit slower at times. Not always, but sometimes the muse is just lower for them - but I don’t try to drop threads without at least making some sort of psa post about it, so keep an eye out for them!
When it comes to pairings, all of my men are straight && a majority of my ladies are bisexual! Leading the bulk of my threads to lean either towards m/f or f/f, but at the time of updating this (12/3/2022) I will not be including m/m content on my blog. I have nothing against it, but I will not write it I am sorry 🖤When writing a starter though, I will always include the preferences at the top so there is no confusion.
All of the normal rules apply here, && please be over the age of 21. Discord is more likely to be given out to people whom I have plotted with a little bit at least on here already, but I am more willing to write there now so that shouldn’t be too hard. I just have to know it’s not gonna flop && go nowhere within a day or two.
Below the cut is my mobile friendly muse list! It will be updated as I continue to expand the roster, but if you want to write with me && really want a particular face to play against that you don’t see here, I am more than willing to add whatever fc you want (provided they have enough resources)
IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR MY STARTERS, LOOK UP THE TAG : starter tag
AS OF 7/22/2023 I HAVE SWITCHED TO BETA AS THAT IS LIKELY WHAT MOST PEOPLE ARE USING NOW.

Games I played in 2020
Just felt like getting my thoughts out on all the games I played this year. I’ve been wanting to do something like this for years but I always let it pass me by. Well not this year! Fuck you laziness!
Tumblr media
I played the first half in 2019 but finished it in 2020 so I guess I'll count it. DQ11 was my intro to Dragon Quest and what a good starting point. I'm not exaggerating when I say this is one of the best traditional JRPGs on the market. Characters, story, combat, it all clicks in just the right way to make a flawless game... until the end credits roll that is.
I have no idea what happened with the post game but by god does it dive off a cliff. It undermines everything you worked to do in the main plot. The characters act brain dead and it shamelessly reuses events from the main game. Please pick up and play DQ11 but for the love of god just stop when the credits roll.
Tumblr media
Doom is a game I knew I'd like. The heavy metal ascetic and soundtrack were right up my alley, but I just never found the time. With Eternal on the way though and having found it on the cheap at a pawn shop I figured there was no time like the present. Needless to say but I was right. I loved everything about this game. The thrill of combat, the screech of the guitars, and the silent take no shit attitude of Doomguy. Make no mistake though, I SUCK at this game. I played on easy but still got my ass handed to me on the regular. But I don't care, I was having way to much fun.
Tumblr media
I flipped my shit when this game got leaked at the tail end of 2019. Zero 3 is my all time favourite game. To celebrate this getting announced I went and 100% Zero 3 as I hadn't done it on my current cart, and Zero 3 was still the first thing I played when I got this collection! I love that game to death and I’m glad to have it on modern consoles again. As I was under a bit of time crunch with other games releasing soon I only played 2 other games in the collection Zero 4 and ZX Advent. Until the DS collection those and 3 were the only Zero/ZX games I had so I have a lot of nostalgia for them.
Zero 4 hold ups better then I remember. Not as good as 3 but a damn solid game with tweaks I honestly wish hit the series before its end. I remember having issues with the stage design and ya it’s not perfect, but it’s far from as bad as I thought. For ZXA this was the first time I beat the game on normal difficulty. For some reason the ZX games have always given me more trouble than the Zero games, so finally beating one on normal was very exciting. Maybe I can now finally go and beat ZX for the first time...
Tumblr media
The Mystery Dungeon series rising from the depth to punch all those unexpecting in the face was a very welcome surprise. I had a lot of hype going into this one as I have very fond memories of my time with Red Rescue Team and even more with Explorers of Darkness. And the game lived up to it! The remastered music is great and crazy nostalgic, the 3D models are well used and don't feel as stiff as they do in the core series, and the QOL changes are near perfect... So why did I drop this game like a rock once I finished the main quest?
Anyone familiar with Mystery Dungeon will know that the post game is the real meat of it. The story is short and all the really cool shit comes in after it's done. But I just couldn't bring myself to put more time in after I finished said story mode. I'm definitely chocking that up to me just not being in the mood then an issue with the game. Here's hoping we get an Explorers DX sometime soon. That will fucking hook me for all it's got.
Tumblr media
Second verse same as the first. I loved this game and sucked at it horribly. Out of all the games I've played this year Doom Eternal is the one I want to go back to the most. I was not the hugest fan of some of the changes made and retained a stance that I liked 2016 better. First person platforming has never been a fun experience in my opinion and Eternal did little to change that. And I know this a lukewarm take at best but fuck Marauders!. They are so unfun to fight and ruin the pace. The Marauder in the last mook wave took me so long I was worried I wouldn’t be able to finish the game. But the more I've seen of Eternal after my playthrough makes me think I was being far to harsh. I haven't played the DLC yet either. Mostly cuss I haven't heard great things about it. Gonna wait for the rest of it to come out to see if it's worth getting. Might just replay to whole game at that point to see if it clicks with me better.
Tumblr media
This was my second favourite game of the year, and was going to take the top slot until a certain other game came out. Addressing the elephant in room right away, I hated the ending. But I was expecting something like that, I think we all were. I won't let the ending ruin the rest of the game though. Not gonna let 1 segment colour everything that came before it. We have to see how the later parts play out to truly see if this ending was trash or not anyway.
It took Square over a decade but they finally got an action RPG battle system that works and feels good to play. This may be my favourite battle system in an RPG period honestly. All four characters are a blast and it only gets better the more time you spend with it. Figuring out the nuances of each character’s skills and how to combine them not only with the skills of the others but how to enhance them with the right Materia set. This makes fights thrilling and satisfying when you finally best whatever was giving you trouble. Tis was the best way to bring 7′s mechanics into the modern landscape while also fixing the BIGGEST issue the OG had. The fact every character feels the same aside from Limit Breaks.
All this on top of graphics that just look fucking stunning, a few glitched out doors aside. Fuck I still feel blown away looking at the characters models (mostly Tifa) and see how god damn pretty everyone is. Also Tifa’s Chinese dress is gift from the Gods and I still haven’t picked my jaw up from the floor after I first saw it.
Tumblr media
In my circle of the internet there was a lot of hype for this game. So much so that I ended up buying it to see what all the hubbub was about. I had never played a Streets of Rage game before and my only experience with beat'em ups was playing a LOT of Scott Pilgrim and last year's River City Girls. Turns out Streets of Rage plays quite a bit different and it kicked my ass! So sadly I had to switch to easy to make it through but I still had a fun time with it.
I started playing mostly as Blaze but once Adam hit the scene oooooh fucking boy. I didn’t play anyone else. There's a deceptive amount of content in this game. You can unlock almost every character from the previous games and all of them rocking their original sprites and moves. If I had more of a connection with this series I'm sure I would have gone nuts on unlocking everything. I stopped after my one playthrough and I was happy with that. Always glad to support a long overdue franchise revival.
Tumblr media
To properly talk about P5R I think I need to air a lot of my feelings on the original game and the importance it has to me. You see, prior to 2017 I barely played games, only sticking to specific franchises. AKA Pokemon and Mega Man/Mega Man like games. Until 2016 though I still bought a lot of games. Eating up Steam sales and deals I found at pawn shops. This lead to a Steam library and shelf filled with games I've never touched outside of maybe an hour or 2. So in 2016 when I took interest in the newly released Kirby Planet Robobot I made a deal with myself. I could get the game but I HAD to beat it.  And I did just that, gaining not just a new fav Kirby game but a new rule for game purchases. If I knew I wouldn't beat a game I was not aloud to buy it. Now what does ANY of this have to do with P5 you may ask? Well... almost everything.
I was immediately interested in P5 when it hit the west in 2017. I loved the 20 or so hours I but into P3 years ago and really liked the P4 anime I had watched around the same time. So of course with all the hype around it I wanted to dive into the series full force with P5. But I knew myself. Putting over 100 hours into a game was beyond me and I had a weird relationship with home console games as I was predominately a handheld gamer. Add in the fact I didn't even have a PS4 and I was convinced P5 would be something I always wanted to play, but never would. So when I went to the mall with a few friends and they showed me that P5 had a PS3 version, I had a dilemma on my hands. I knew I wanted to play it and I now had a way to do so. But doing that would require me to change 2 HUGE hang ups I had with games. Would I being willing to waste 60 bucks with so much working against me? Apparently I was. I immediately started going to town on this game. Making sure I spent no less then 2 hours a day playing NO MATTER WHAT. Which may not seem like a lot but it was to me... at the time.. I also had just moved to my current house, so coming home from my still relatively new job and going straight into P5 was the first real routine I formed during this heavily transitional part of my life.
I of course ended up loving P5 and put 200 hours into it. As such my outlook on gaming was forever changed. Console games were no longer out of reach and I knew I could handle playing monster length game. I started playing way more games then I ever did before and trying out generas I never thought I would play. P5 is the main reason for this and why I'm able to make a post like this. To actually touch on Royal though? It's unarguably the better version of the game and Atlus learned all the right lessons from P4G. The new characters are great and the added section at the end is possibly the best shit Atlus has ever written. I only wish Yoshizawa joined the party sooner so I could play as her more.
Tumblr media
The release of this really came out of nowhere huh? Wayforward announced it was being made mid way through 2019, then there was its weird half release on the Apple store... and then suddenly it was out! Very little fanfare for this one. Is that indicative of the games quality? Luckily no. Seven Sirens is a solid addition to the series and follows up Half Genies Hero nicely. The game goes back to Shantae's Metroidvania roots and makes a TON of improvements.
Transformations are now instant instead of having to dance for them (don't worry dancing is still in the game) making the game feel more like Pirates Curse in its fast flow. They also added the Monster Cards which take heavy inspiration from Aria of Sorrow's Soul system. A feature I'm happy to see in any Metroidvania since Aria is one of my all time favourite games. Sadly though the game does not take the best advantage of these improvements.
Over all the game feels kinda empty. The dungeons aren't super exciting to explore nor are they challenging in any way. And the plot is very repetitive, with each dungeon repeating the same beats. Really this game feels more like set up for a better game down the line. The mechanics are all here and Wayforward has a solid art style with the sprites from Half Genie Hero. Hopefully they capitalizes on this for Shantae 6 and we get the best game in the series.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While it may not have been the most thrilling game, Seven Sirens really put me into a Shantae mood. So much so that I went back to play the 2 games in the series I had never touched. This being the first game and Risky's Revenge. Shantae 1 really is a hidden gem in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, it's the definition of jank, but there's a lot of heart to this game. The sprites are great, the soundtrack is good, and the characters are funny... but it's still on the OG Gameboy and that's a massive hindrance for any game. I'm hard pressed to recommend this with how poorly its aged but I think it's better then it looks.
Risky's Revenge on the other hand was a game that shocked me by how little it had to offer. I know this game went through a hellish development and what we got was far from what Wayforward planned to make, but it's hard to imagine a world where this was the technical BEST Shantae game. It's not a bad game by any stretch... just a boring one.
For the record my ranking of the games goes Pirates Curse>Half Genie Hero>Seven Sirens>Original>Risky’s Revenge
Tumblr media
Sword and Shield are mediocre games at best. I know, real steaming hot take there. I managed to make my Sword playthrough a lot more fun by not spoiling myself on the new Pokemon designs for the first time since Gen 3. Either way, I enjoyed myself enough that I didn't mind playing more of it with these DLC campaigns. Plus I love the idea of Game Freak switching over to this method as apposed to making a third version, so I wanted to support it.
Klara is a fucking top tier Poke Girl both in design and personality and is probably the highlight of Isle of Armour. GF actually went out of their way to give her multiple expressions to sell her toxic bitch personality and I love every minute of it. She sadly drifts into the background for the second half of the DLC’s story which hurts an already rough section even more. Not more then having to grind Kubfuu all the way to fucking level 70 though! That put a serious hamper on my motivation to finish the story but I pushed through anyway. Having to solo the tower with Kubfuu was at least a fun challenge though, as was the final fight with Mustard. Fuck the Diglett hunt though. Ain’t no one got time for that.
Crown Tundra may be my fav of the 2 though even if there isn't a character as good as Klara in it. The hunt for the legendaries was just pure adventure and I had a fucking blast doing it. The joy I felt when I figured out Registeel’s puzzle put a smile on my face unlike any Pokemon game since I was a kid. The whole Regi stuff was honestly a nice Nostalgia trip to my times with Emerald. The story around Calyrex was enjoyable, even if I still hate its design. Not revealing the horses before release was a good call to as it gave an honest surprise. Having to chase down the Galar forme Birds in the overworld is a great way to evolve the roaming legendaries idea and I hope GF sticks to this. Plus the Galar forme birds are some of the best legendary designs since Gen 5 and I love Chocodos way to fucking much.
Tumblr media
Here we are folks, my GotY. I love Panzer Paladin so fucking much. A combination of mechanics from Mega Man, Castlevania, and Blaster Master? Sign me the fuck up! This game is tailored made for me and I knew I had to play it once it started making the rounds on social media. I'll admit though, I was a bit worried when the the first full trailer dropped and showed the weapon mechanics. Breakable weapons that you have to sacrifice for checkpoints and power ups? I'm not sure about that.... Luckily I was being a complete moron and those mechanics are near perfect.
I love the set up of each boss being a mythological creature from different cultures. They didn’t just pull the easy ones either. A lot of these things I learned of for the first time here. I love how Grit controls. Using the upward stab as a double jump and being able to pogo off enemies Shovel Knight style just felt great and satisfying. Flame was limited but it made her sections feel tense. She does more damage then you think she could at first glance. Also the only way to heal Grit being to use pods that only Flame could access was a cool idea.
I am begging you Tribute Games, you have to make more Panzer Paladin games. Slap some new upgrades on Grit and expand what Flame can do and you have an even better sequel  on your hands. Also maybe not have so many 'gotcha' moments with enemy placement. That's really my only complaint about the game. Great music, great sprites, giant robots, unique premise, and a reference to Canadian legends. The ultimate self indulgent game for me.
Tumblr media
It felt super out of left field for Curse of the Moon to be getting a sequel. The games fucking amazing but it was really just a tie in for the main Bloodstained product. Not something I expect to get a continuation. Either way I was pumped. If this was even half as good as the original then I was in for a great time. Which held true... cuss this legitimately is only half as good as Curse of the Moon. I still like the game, quite a lot actually. I mean how could I not with a fucking Corgi piloting a Death Train Mech.
Something was just missing here that never made this click like the first game. Maybe it was the stage design, maybe the bosses, maybe the fact that it's a bit to long. I'm not sure. All I know is I couldn't bring myself to play all the modes like I did in the original. . Stopping part way in to the one where you can get the first games characters. I want to go back some day... I just don’t know when someday is.

This was an announcement I never saw coming. A Gundam Verses game coming to the west? That hasn't happened in the entire time I've been a Gundam fan. I had played a bit of Full Boost on my old roommates PS3 thanks to him having a Japanese account and I played Force on the Vita a few years ago. But to have the latest version fully translated with open servers? Holy hell that's a dream come true.
Having the open betas every weekend leading up to launch was some much needed fun during this shit hole year. I had a lot of fun just fucking around with different suits and seeing what I could do with 'em. Absolutely trashing two Bael players as the Kapool is a memory I'll keep with me for a long time. Fucking danced on their graves. This gave me some new appreciation for suits like the Baund Doc and Hambrabi, the later becoming a lowkey fav as it was my main.
I've fallen off with the game in the last few months but I definitely want to go back. I hope to start learning the game and take parts in tourneys when cons aren’t death sentences anymore.

It felt like everything in my life was SCREAMING at me to start the Yakuza series. From 2 of my friends playing 0 recently, a youtuber I following live tweeting as he played through the WHOLE series back-to-back, and Yakuza 2 having a run at AGDQ 2020. Plus the constant pleas to play this series you get from following Little Kuriboh on Twitter. I finally broke and picked up 0 in the middle of August. Boooooooooy howdy did I not know what I was getting in to. And no I don't mean the content. I knew Yakuza was a series of wildly conflicting tones between the main story and side quests. What I mean is the length. I legit thought this was gonna be a 20-30 hour game. When i reached hour 30 of my playthrough and realized I wasn't even close to a conclusion, I think I knew I had bitten off more then I was planning. That misstep aside I ended up loving this game and want to play the rest of the series.... I just need to rest up first before I dive into Kiwami 1.
Let's actually talk about the game for a moment here. Kiryu and Majima quickly clicked as likeable characters to me and I cared about their stories. Combat is fun and the multiple styles are all great.... though both the default styles take a while to get there. The mad rush I felt at the end was fantastic and the last bosses are a joy to fight. Only real complaint is the pacing of the side stories. I loved being able to just stumble into various different events while on route to the next plot objective. But this became less common as the game went on and side stories started getting more tucked away. Also hot take here, the host club mingame is more tedious then fun and I like Kiryu’s business stuff as I could do that in the background. I’m excited to dive into Kiwami and probably Kiwami 2 this year... Though I’m not sure when just yet.

Just gonna say it flat out, I think this is better the the 2018 game. The smaller scale helps in this style of game and Miles just naturally has a better move set then Peter. I'm not sure if they actually tightened up the combat system or if they just threw less bullshit enemies at you but fighting feels so much better in this one. Traversal is better too,  simply because they changed the button for tricks. In the original you have to hold down 2 face buttons to enter trick mode??? In hindsight that was such a bad call.
Having both the heal and venom powers run off the same meter was a good idea. Making the choice between keeping yourself alive guaranteed or potentially ending a fight quicker/disposing of a problem enemy is super fun. The player having to make small choices like this during combat is what helps it not be brainless. I love all the different venom skills you get. While they all achieve the same thing in stunning opponents, how you achieve that goal is up to you. Do you want to just slug the bastard, throw 'em up in the air, tackle the shit out of them? The choice is yours.
Only real big complaint is certain upgrades being NG+ locked. I know you want to encourage replays, but this is a shitty way to do it I feel. Also can we retire Rhino for the next game. Man has had 2 shitty boss fights now and I need a break. Between this and Spider-Verse, I'm honestly starting to like Miles as Spider-Man more then Peter.

I got this game more on a whim then anything. I was definitely interested when it was first announced for the west. Vanillaware's beautiful art style in a story about giant robots beating the shit out of Kaijus? Sign me the fuck uuuuuu-oh wait it's an RTS? I had never played an RTS's before, mainly due to the sheer concept stressing me out. So I let it fall to the wayside. The game started coming up again though towards the end of the year with GotY on everyone's minds.  This revived my interest, especially as what I HAD planned to be playing around that time was... well. Cyberpunk. Don't think I need to say much more. Also I had worried for nothing as the Real Time Strategy was not that Real Time.
This game really lays on the analysis paralysis once you're out of the tutorial. Do you want to fight, do you want to do story, who's story do you want to do, what branch should you follow, how much should you play with this one character? It's very overwhelming at first. I decided to not go ham on just one character and swap around all the time. The twists in this game are equal parts exciting and infuriating. Learning something new always came with the caveat of more questions, or something you knew 'for sure' being disproven. Like when I learned 1 characters was actually 4 separate ones! Anyone that's played knows exactly what I'm talking about.
Natsuno ended up being my fav and not just because of.... obvious reasons. BJ was cute if unfortunately named and her relationship with Mirua was my favourite in the game. Not that there was much competition except for maybe Ogata and Tomi. I ended up really liking the combat but I can see why RTS fans say it's the weakest part. It's far from complex and I had a winning strat by the third or so real fight. Aka spam turrets and have the Gen 1′s gank all the bosses.
One quick thing I want to share was how I beat the boss at the end of Area 2. The one where Inaba is singing. I had Hijiyama use the limit break skill to bum rush the boss right off the hop. I took out half its health in one hit but Hijiyama’s Sentinel was on death’s door. Only thing that saved him was sending in Amaguchi to blow up a bunch of missiles. Hijiyama took it out on his next attack but lost his Sentinel at the same time. It was a real clutch victory and crazy fucking anime.

The best way to really describe Carrion is that it's a fantastic proof of concept. Can you make a game where you play as The Thing? Why yes, yes you can. Carrion just needed a bit more tweaking to really bring this concept home and be the A+ game I know it can be. As it is now the game is a bit empty. The level design is super samey and the lack of a map is fucking brutal at points. I know it would make no sense for a blob monster to have a map but somethings you just have to gameify for convenience. The level design must have done something right as even though I was completely lost I still moved from area to area properly. Hell by the time I actually looked up a map I had 1 more item to get and I learned I was one door away from beating the game.
I love the idea of losing mass as you take damage and gaining more by eating people, but having abilities tied to size was a terrible idea. It just leads to tedium as I have to go and shed myself to the right size, do the puzzle, then of course I'm going to go back and rebuild myself to see if I can do the next segment at full power. Just make it so you can swap between abilities using the d-pad or something. I hope this game gets a sequel just so this sick ass concept can be fully realized.

Raven Cycle Headcanons: Comic Book Heroes
I.
Gansey says he doesn’t keep any secrets from his friends, but they still mostly learn about his life history when he drops comments like, “The last time I went base jumping in Borneo. . .” at which point Adam has to call him ‘Master Bruce’ in the Michael-Caine-as-Alfred voice. This makes Ronan laugh-snort through his nose so of course Adam has to keep calling Gansey that again and again for the rest of the day.
Gansey wearily informs them that he is, as they know, a Marvel guy and also the Nolan Batman movies are overrated. This just makes Adam (who is an extremely good mimic) need to do the voice more and the others have to join in.  Ronan does a decent “Christian Bale as Batman” and also “Christian Bale yelling at the guy who got in his light from that viral video,” but Blue steals the show with her Tom Hardy-as-Bane. (Although, technically, the one who does all of these voices better than anyone is Chainsaw).
II.
Gansey says he’s a Marvel guy but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have opinions. Adam finds this out when he makes a crack about how Dick isn’t such a bad name; Gansey shares it with Dick Grayson who is indisputably the best Robin.
This results in a pained Gansey face -- the ‘I’m not thrilled about correcting you but I’m going to be correcting you’ face -- and the statement that Tim Drake, self-taught boy detective, is just objectively the best Robin.
Ronan knows exactly enough about this topic, ie, one of those straight to DVD animated movies that Gansey threw on when they were drinking and bored, to declare Jason Todd the best Robin, especially when he came back from the dead and started calling himself Red Hood and kicking the shit out of people. This is Ronan’s only contribution to the conversation except to make occasional jokes about tiny shorts.
“Thoughts, Jane?” Gansey asks and Blue, reliably, raises a fist and says, “Justice for Stephanie Brown!”
III.
Gansey says he’s a Marvel guy, he loves the Stan Lee “Excelsior” schtick, but he mostly means that he has the 102 issues of the original Lee/Kirby ‘Fantastic Four’ run memorized -- it’s classic, like the Camaro -- and he got the $100 /volume omnibus editions when he was 10, along with the Steve Ditko era of Spider-Man.
He also sometimes wears a Silver Age “Iron Man” T-shirt that he bought when he decided to train for a triathlon, in the few months between Wales  and Aglionby. (Gansey never actually made it to the point of entering a triathlon, though he had a very respectable time in the Charlottesville Half-Marathon last spring and he’s definitely, perpetually, going to go home for the Marine Corps Marathon next year). But he got the shirt because he liked the classic red and gold Don Heck art, and because he thought it would be a good ‘Iron Man triathlon’ joke if anybody asked about the shirt, which they never did.
He’s not actually an Iron Man fan, though, he doesn’t really have time for any hero who takes two-thirds of the movie to realize he should maybe stop being a complete asshole to everybody, and then is somehow supposed to get points for being slightly less of an asshole in the six minutes after it occurs to him? Also Tony Stark is entirely too familiar as  type who gets loud at, and then gets thrown out on his ear from, the kind of parties hosted at the Gansey household. No thank you.
Adam and Blue can talk to each other through references to seventies and eighties X-Men and Excalibur comics like it’s some kind of secret code. Gansey will occasionally ask, “Wait, which one is that? Whose codename does that go with?” and Adam says he ought to just read the books himself. No thank you, Gansey says. Too many retcons, he says.  If he wants to piece together narratives full of inconsistencies that lose story threads and run all over the place, he has pre-Galfridian texts, and those have the excuse of being medieval and mostly in Welsh. “Just tell me the good parts of the stories,” Gansey says, “So I can understand what you’re talking about,” and sometimes they do.
IV.
Blue and Adam have very similar points of reference when it comes to comics. In fact, it develops that they have the exact same points of reference: namely, everything that was available in trade paperback in the teen room of the Henrietta public library during the years they were in sixth through eighth grade.
“I spent so much time in there,” Blue says. “Trying to get a little peace and quite away from my house.“
“Relatable,” says Adam. Although, he’s well aware by now, for different reasons.
“Weird we never ran into each other.”
Adam stops, raises his eyes, takes a good look at her, trying to mentally subtract a few years and some teenage attitude, to reimagine her creative haircut. “Oh,” he says, “Yeah actually that makes sense. I probably did see you there.”
“Oh.Sorry, I don’t remember --”
“It’s fine,” says Adam hastily. Adam’s home was technically in Augusta County, across the Henrietta Town Line, which was why he and Blue had never been at the same school when they were younger. It was close enough for Adam to bike to town, though, and he figured out the Henrietta library had a considerably better collection than the one near his school where his mother had exasperatedly signed him up for a card.
Adam figured out that he was eligible to apply for a library card in Henrietta, but that he would need a parent to come down to the branch and sign him up for it. Even assuming that he could find his mother or father in a hospitable mood, it would completely defeat the purpose of having a quiet place to read where they couldn’t track him down. (If he just said ‘the library’ he wasn’t responsible for what they assumed. . .) So Adam would just take stacks of books with him and slump down in a chair or camp out in a corner and take all the time he could get away with.
“If you didn’t see me,” he tells Blue, “It’s because I didn’t want anybody to see me. I was definitely hiding.” He would doubly have been hiding if he saw a pretty girl hanging out around the comic books. Way too stressful.
Blue pouts a little. “You should have come and said, ‘Hi.’ We could have been friends five years earlier.”
Adam makes a face of regret. “I should have,” he says, “Sorry.”
The truth is, as neither of them says but both of them suspect, if a boy had come up and tried to talk to twelve-year old Blue Sargent when she was trying to read, she absolutely would have yelled at him.
Sometimes, things need to happen on their own time.
