Hello Mrs. Meyer,
Neil Gaiman won’t answer, but will you please tell us your thoughts on Goncharov?
Hello!
Goncharov is one of my dads favorite movies and he showed me when I was maybe a bit too young. But I do love it!
I’ve spoken extensively about the way that everything from literary classics like Wuthering Heights to music like My Chemical Romance inspired my work. However, I’ve always shied away from publicly talking about Goncharov because it means so much to me, but some of the themes in The Twilight Saga — especially the bits set in Volterra in New Moon with the clock tower — were loosely inspired by Goncharov. Scorsese is a genius and I hope that when you go back and look at The Twilight Saga you can see the little Easter eggs and various ways I’ve been inspired by that masterpiece.

I loved your Demetri fanfic! it was so bittersweet and well-written.
your bio says your requests are open? could I perhaps request one for Felix? feel free to let your creative juices flow, but something sweet and fluffy between him and his fem!mate?
Thanks lovely! x
Respectful Humming (Felix x fem!Reader)
The reader's appearance is not specified. She is shorter than Felix, though.
A/N: I let my creative juices 😉 flow for this one. Thanks a lot for this wonderful request. I hope you enjoy it, dear Anonymous. Still, I want to emphasize that I do not write sexual content about characters who are underage. I received a few requests for stuff like that, and I must say that I do not feel comfortable with writing those fics.
“That was a rather tedious trial,” Demetri remarked, carrying himself elegantly through the halls of the Volturi’s castle and putting any décor to shame. He was the most ornate décor to have ever existed anyway. The halls and rooms were lucky to have him. He was a statue created by Michelangelo.
“Indeed,” Felix replied, treading softly on the stone floor. Despite his gigantic size, he appeared to be levitating.
“I cannot quite fathom why Aro prolonged the trial unnecessarily.” Demetri turned right, heading toward the library.
“He was in a particularly bad mood today,” Felix explained monotonously. “You know how he can be. It has happened before. He really wanted to see that poor excuse of a vampire suffer.”
Demetri shrugged nonchalantly. “It shall not concern me.” As he and Felix entered the library, he added, “At least Jane and Alec got their fun out of it.”
“Exactly.” Felix's eyes scanned the bookshelves and sitting areas worriedly for your form. You had promised you would be here to await him after the end of the trial. But you were nowhere in sight. “The twins are satisfied for now, and they are unlikely to cause mayhem. Although that is never a guarantee.”
Feeling a heavy weight on his chest, Felix stopped in his track. Standing in the middle of the library, he crossed his arms and used his sensitive ears to locate you. However, neither your heartbeat nor the even sound of your breath seemed to be dwelling in the castle. That was bad. Panic seized him. The world of vampires was wicked and cruel. Had a newborn taken you? Or worse, had one of his ancient enemies broken inside the castle and humannapped you?  For vampires, the worst possible punishment was to lose a mate.
A mate for a mate.
Keeping his composure, Felix looked at Demetri, who had sat down at a chess board opposite Heidi. They were flirting ferociously, and although they had been doing this for centuries, they always found new hollow phrases and sweet compliments to charm each other. Their friendship was real, but everyone knew where the two of them would end up. It was the reason why some wished for soundproof rooms. However, the Kings were against such an installment because to run the coven smoothly, their senses needed to have access everywhere at any given time. Traitors, raging newborns, enemies… None of them could have the opportunity to hurt the Volturi’s integrity.
“So, if I win, how about the whole night this time?” Demetri organized the chess pieces.
“First, honey, you have to win. Last time I beat you. And how about you start to become more creative. We have done that so many times already.” Heidi giggled sensually. Her flirting was always of the dominant kind. She never behaved submissively. Tilting her head to expose her neck was something she would never do. You had to accept her as the strong woman she was.
“Hey, Demetri,” Felix called out. “Do you know where (Y/N) is?”
The vampire shrugged. Clearly, he was uninterested. “I don’t know. If she is not here, she is somewhere else.” A cloud fell over the tracker’s face. “It is a pity that I cannot sense her tenor. But her immunity to gifts is the reason why Aro allowed you to keep her in the first place.”
A deep growl rumbled through Felix's chest. Demetri ignored his obvious anger, and the giant walked out of the room, seething. He hated the way Demetri and the others talked about you. Like you were a pet only kept for his amusement. Admittedly, vampires mainly see humans as food, and thus, it is most difficult to establish respectful relationships between humans and vampires. Still, Felix would not allow the others to look down on you. At least not in your presence. He ignored slighting remarks when you were not in the same room, knowing that those would be uttered behind his back anyway.
Anxiously, Felix hurried out of the castle. It was a cloudy day, and the sun was already setting. He didn’t need his cloak. After wandering around for a while and searching for your familiar heartbeat, he found you sitting on a low wall, overlooking the fields and trees expanding in the distance.
Relieved, Felix sighed. He felt like he was reborn into a human, only to be turned into a vampire again. He was so glad to see you were alright. He came to stand behind you and embraced you lovingly. Unperturbed, you continued to hum softly, dangling your legs in the air.
“I thought you wanted to meet in the library,” Felix whispered against the shell of your ear. He had to lean down to accomplish this feat of affection since you were shorter than him. Your head, although you were sitting on a raised wall, did not even reach his chin.
 “I thought so, too. I had been in the library. But Chelsea and Renata came in, and they were not so kind.”
“What did they do? Did they say something hurtful?” Felix placed soft kisses on your head.
You shook your head. “That is between me and them. I won’t tell you. Also, as I have mentioned before, I can solve my own conflicts. If I want the others to respect me, I cannot let you fight my battles for me. Otherwise, they will not take me seriously.”
Oh, strong, cute you…
Felix picked you up bridal-style, turned you around, and sat you back down. Now you were facing him. His big hands caressed your shoulders. “I know. You have told me that a lot. More than you should have to.” He was obnoxiously protective of you. So much so that at the beginning of your life in Volterra, he tried to shelter you from the others, seeking out confrontations to solve your arguments. For him, this was not about protecting your pride or dignity or anything. Just that he could not allow others to pick a fight with you. However, it quickly turned out that you were the real menace. You did not back down from any conflicts, and if you were facing heavy provocations, you would unleash witty remarks of your own.
“By the way,” Felix began, “I love that you are not frightened anymore when I approach you.”
You laughed amusedly. “Right, if you had hugged me from behind two months ago, I would have jumped.” A cheeky grin was plastered on your face. You got up, standing on the wall. Felix grabbed you by your hips to stabilize you. Emotionally and physically, he gave you equanimity and equilibrium. “Look. I am taller than you are now.”
“Barely. I am not sure that counts.”
“Yes, it does. Even if it’s only a centimeter, Felix.” You rolled your eyes playfully. Then, your gaze became serious. “I was really afraid of you until we reached a certain level of trust. Now, it is like I can almost feel when you are around. I do not need to see you to have that feeling. A special kind of security shrouds my body and mind when you are near. Just now, as I was humming to myself, I felt that you were close and searching for me.”
Hmm… Was that an early manifestation of your gift? “You are wonderful. Do you know that?” Felix pulled you in by your waist.
“Of course, I do. You tell me every day.” With a big smile on your face, it was you this time who leant down to kiss him.

Marcus - In a relationship/turning you

masterlist
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
°Possessive, imprisoning and depressive.
°When you are with him, taken to the Volturi, you would still be human and all the more valuable for the brown-haired one.
°As you stood in the great hall actually serving as food snatched by the guards. It was he who broke free from his stiffness. The other two leaders seemed almost surprised.
°But since then you belonged to him and for an eternity since its creation he no longer felt the crushing weight and pain of his heart. Instead, it seemed as if he did not have to think about his wife, did not agonize with each day. Other than that, you were suddenly so much more important than his deceased wife. So much more important than the pain.
°You were his everything. But soon the extent of his condition became apparent. The hundreds and thousands of years since the death of his wife, since his grief that held him captive. It was this pain and this grief that initially did not command him. He was initially seemingly back to his old self. A fact that reassured both Caius and Aro, who knew that Marcus would not have lasted much longer in his old state before seeking death.
°In the beginning, in his happy moments, he was overcautious with you and just too gentle. He was afraid of going too fast and overpowering you. He knew that he was a monster in your eyes and that he had to do it differently. Because in his eyes she was everything to him.
°He would show you your own room, send the servants away and said, ,,Now that we are together you only need me". Words that came so softly over his lips that they took away all your fear. The fear of Aro and Caius, the fear of the other vampires. Words of which she could not yet guess what meaning they would get in time.
°In this castle where death lurked around every corner if she lost even a drop of blood, he was the one who seemed most normal at first. He tried to be as gentle as possible with you in his condition. Was always close to you, followed you everywhere like a shadow. But also tried to come closer to you with a little humanity. To show you that he was not like the others.
°Took you to the library and for a moment a soft smile crept on his lips when you asked him insecurely what his favorite books were. He was happy every time you didn't retreat and came out of the room. He picked up some books and sat you down together on a two-seater couch. His soft voice sounded as he read from the books, his red eyes running over the words, gliding to her every now and then.
°The silence between them was pleasant and when he heard the soft beating of her heart and saw her fall asleep, he took her in his arms and brought her to his room. He turned on the fireplace that he had not used for hundreds of years. Knowing that she could get cold, that she was human and that the cold that was in his body made her uncomfortable. It remained like that between them for some time.
°The gentleness and consideration. Until his obsession and his mind took over. It was a negotiation with a rogue vampire who was in the room. So was Marcus love standing there next to the leader but it took only a moment. In which the vampire tried to pounce on them. Marcus could still react in time to tear off his head.
°It was one moment when the brown-haired man turned to her, saw her fear and felt the pain again. He almost lost her, she was afraid of him again. Never again would all this happen. His mind was again tortured with the thought changed again.
°Since then it changed, everything changed. He became obsessive with her and stayed by her side all the time. Took care of her and didn't let anyone come near her or her room. First for days, then for weeks and then months he locked her in her room. ,,You know I only do it because I love you" he told her again and again when she asked when she could come out of the room.
°But in reality, in his condition, he would never let her leave. He brought her books and paper and paints. He gave her everything and let her spend her time with it. But he always stayed in her room in the dark corners his red eyes never left hers. He put his hands gently around her body and pulled her close, enjoying her warmth, her smell, her blood. But in his madness he did not see how she gradually became less and less alive.
°The once lively, almost loving gaze became dull and dull. The hope in her died and the thought of another day only hurt her. She was his image from months ago, he was driven into this state by his obession. But if there was such suffering on his side, it was the same on her side.
°It went on until the point where even Aro and Caius appeared in the room. Marcus after a long back and forth convinced him that he had to take care of the matters of the power meeting to get him out of the room since he had neglected them. ,,I'll be right back, my dear," he said as he walked out the door, leaving her alone with the other two.
°Her dull gaze slid from the window to the other two vampires. She saw something like disbelief and uncertainty in their red eyes as they looked at her body. As loving as Marcus could be in his madness, he had bitten her body all over. At every place that was released by the clothes and underneath there were deep bites. ,,He...said...he wanted me... within him" she mumbled and tried to cover the bites. Before he sucked out the poison again, he didn't want to kill his heat. Could not.
°Aro saw the sour smile and the roll of Caius' eyes, which came more from uncertainty. They both could not control Marcus anymore. The love he felt for her had become too dangerous. But they knew that if they killed her, Marcus would follow. He would kill himself. ,,My dear, you must eat something and move," came quietly from Aro, who pointed to the door as Caius opened it and the two took her away.
°The fear she felt seemed to be destroyed by Caius' rage and Aro's paranoia. For months, for a moment, her old self seemed to be back. Aro was visibly pleased because everything could turn out differently for him and the blond. They could all go down because of her and Marcus. Something they could not afford. ,,Is there anything else you need?" the black-haired man asked, almost curious, as if he would like to see the outcome.
°She paused and an image came to her mind. ,,I would like a universal key" was her answer and she saw the amused expression of Aro and the slightly surprised one of Caius. But she got her wish, thanking them both as the door to the room closed again, knowing that as soon as he came back he would sink his teeth into her body again and pull her close. His coldness would suffocate her.
°It did not change as she had to learn day after day after day it was always the same. He held her captive in his golden cage. Until his pretty little bird could no longer. Her being was too weakened to go on.
°Luck was merciful to her when he was called to a meeting again. His cold hands brushed over her hair and left a soft kiss on her hands, which were full of bite. She knew that he knew that the poison of his bite was all the more painful for her. He knew it all the time.
°But all he didn't know he couldn't know and as the door closed and the sun rose on the horizon, her gaze slid to the window. ,,One last time to feel the sun," she murmured, longing for the warmth and light of everything that was not here with him. He was cold and dark as the night. The cold being. Going to the window, she took the key in her hand and opened the bars to open the window. Volterra was still silent, the sun was not yet fully up, it took a few minutes.
°But it was enough for her to climb into the window. The wind that seemed to call her, the birds that flew around. It would be a nice death. Looking over her shoulder she saw only the cold and darkness where she never wanted to go again. ,,Forgive me, Marcus," she murmured, trying to hold on to the good side of herself as she toppled forward. Finding no footing in the air and falling down the great tower of drifting.
°The wind rushed around her but she did not feel the cold. The chirping of the birds was beautiful, the clouds above her were so soft and fluffy. But the most beautiful was the sun, the sun that rose and hit her with its warm rays. It was life. The life that ended for her when she felt someone grab her and press her against a cold body.
°,,I forgive you my heart forever together" he replied before she felt him bite her neck. The poison did not take back and the two continued to fieheln down the sun hit him and she saw for a moment the man who might have gotten her heart before the bright light around them together forever.
°That morning he had turned as she fell to the ground, he had brought her back with his own hands. Sitting by her bed until she opened her eyes, her red eyes fell on his. She felt that her heart was no longer beating. She knew that she was truly with him forever.
°In this eternity, her ability to see attacks coming, the evil of anyone who wanted to harm her. An ability that helped her in the beginning to stay away from Marcus, to ignore him and to escape from him. But after decades and even hundreds of years, she grew tired of this and Marcus' attempts turned into a kind of flattery.
°His madness for her after she had fallen for it became the same. But Aro and Caius didn't say anything because they had the brown-haired leader back like thousands of years ago. Marcus was himself again as long as his heart was with him. But it remained and the love that was between them seemed stronger than anything that existed.
°It was their bond of love created out of his grief and her madness. The common delusion of love brought them both together in the end forever.
Demetri: Is the implication of vampiric vegetarianism not that humans are essentially animals? Not just biologically but also as far as value? Given that you are basically saying that not eating humans is the same for you as human not eating animals? Isn’t it better for the environment to eat humans anyway? So many of them are destroying the world. We could organize it, start by eating CEOs maybe? Really put meaning behind ‘eat the rich’? I think humans would actually be grateful. Vampires also have significantly less of a carbon footprint than humans. Do you think the humans would let us lead them in a communist revolution?
Carlisle: I’m begging you to SHUT THE FUCK UP.
Will you try? - Two
(Felix Volturi x reader)
Tumblr media
After well over a year I finally wrote something to post again. I swear, I have so many ideas I’m just too lazy ahaha, anyway I hope you like it! This sorry will probably take a while to finish, but alle the parts have a kind off closed ending so it’s still satisfying to read if you know what I mean <3
Parts: 1 2 3 4 5
Masterlist
Description: After dealing with the Newborn Army in Washington, Felix comes home to you.
Warnings: Slight mentions of smut
1666 words
You’ve been living in the castle in Volterra for about four months now and Felix was away on a mission. At first he didn’t want to tell you what it was about, but after you got on his nerves enough he finally told you it was regarding the red headed vampire Victoria, who was after your cousin. Apparently she wanted to revenge her mate James that the Cullens killed after he bit and tried to kill Bella. And now Victoria was assembling a newborn army to kill the Cullens and your cousin. You were trying to wrap your head around how Bella managed to get herself into these situations for a long time now, since you were kids. But then again you were one to talk, living in a castle in Italy with your vampire mate. Maybe it was because you two were related.
You insisted on going with Felix, Demetri, Alec and Jane, but after a heated argument, Felix put his foot down and while you pouted, you backed down and stayed behind. So you lounged around in your shared room and binge watched a few shows, Heidi sometimes joining you when she wasn’t on duty. She was your closest friend in the castle, even though you had the feeling that Jane was slowly beginning to crack and warm up to you too, which got Felix speechless, as he’d known her for centuries and she still didn’t like him.
While you where watching (Y/F/S) for the nth time, your phone chimed. Hello my love, we just landed so I’ll be there in about an hour, can’t wait to see you, it read and immediately a smile lit up your face. You really missed him while he was gone, it’s crazy how it’s only been four months and you were head over heels in love with the giant vampire. Neither of you said the three words yet, but you knew it was because Felix wanted to give you time and not send you running for the hills. That’s great baby, I can’t wait! I missed you, you answered and threw the blanket off you.
It was already 8pm, but you still wanted to brush your teeth and look somewhat presentable when he arrived. That’s one thing you were always insecure about, vampires could see everything so very clear and detailed, every pore, pimple, hair. You were glad all the rooms in the castle were soundproofed, otherwise you’d probably had to go to the next restaurant to use the bathroom with the knowledge everyone in the castle could hear you otherwise. You were sure the vampires were happy about the soundproofed walls too, glad they didn’t have to hear each other all the time. Leaving the bathroom you sat back down on the couch and resumed your show, waiting for your mate to come back.
Half an hour later the door finally opened and an exhausted looking Felix stepped in, as far as vampires can look exhausted. You immediately jumped up from the couch, the blanket falling on the floor, and made your way over to him. “Hey”, you smiled and as soon as your eyes locked, a smile made its way on his face. “Il mio amore”, he replied and opened his arms for you to step into. Your face pressed to his sculpted chest, he embraced you and bent down slightly to put his cheek on your head.
“Are you alright?”, you asked, muffled by his chest. “Now that I’m back here with you, I am”, he answered making you giggle. “You can be so sappy”, you smiled and you could practically hear him grin. “You know, back in my times people called that romantic”, he lectured you with a laugh and pulled you to the couch with him. Before your butt could hit the cushion, he sped to the coatrack by the door and took off his coat, before sitting right next to you. Even though you’ve seen him do this a thousand times already, your heart still skipped a beat. “I`ll never get used to that”, you breathed holding your hand to your heart. “Don’t worry my love, I mean at the bottom line your body is made to react to a predator like that”, he grinned and - just to prove his point you felt - was leaning over you a second later with his hands on either side of your head, your back pushed into the pillows behind you. And to his satisfaction your heart sped up again.
“You’re an idiot”, you laughed, lacing you’re fingers behind his neck, his smile shifting from playful to genuine. “Is this idiot finally getting a kiss though?”, he asked and with a smile you leaned up towards him, but he was already leaning down to meet your lips. Even though his body temperature was considerably lower than yours, you never felt more comfortable and at home than in his arms, with his lips on yours. You’ve kissed people before, but no one could ever come even close to the way you felt when Felix held your cheek with one hand, while slowly deepening the kiss. He was always like this, the perfect gentleman, especially compared to the teenage boys you’ve had experience with before him. But with his tall, muscular frame propped up above you and his tongue starting to trace your lips, you’d be lying if you’d say you weren’t thinking about more inappropriate things he could be doing with his tongue.
But if you tried to bring up the idea of having sex again, you knew exactly what he would say. That he’s afraid he’d hurt you - or even worse, not being able to control his own strength, especially with him being even stronger than a normal vampire (as if that didn’t turn you on even more). This seemed to be a vampire thing in general though, considering Bella told you Edward was the exact same when you last talked to her over the phone. It was good to have someone kinda being able to relate, especially to everything you had to give up. But all of that didn’t mean you wanted it any less. And it also didn’t mean you could control getting turned on by the attractive vampire on top of you, making Felix groan deeply and pull away.
“Damn you smell so good, you’re making this really hard tesoro”, he breathed, his hands clutching the fabric of the couch tightly while you laid under him flushed and panting. Taking another breath in, he clenched his eyes shut and buried his face in your neck with a moan. “Maybe that’s the plan”, you laughed breathlessly, stroking the hair at the nape of his neck making him sigh. “You know we can’t”, he whispered against the sensitive skin of your neck, your body almost reacting instinctively, clutching your legs together a little more. You could feel his body stiffen immediately. “I know, I know, but…we haven’t even tried, have we? And you seem to be in control just fine when we make out, so-“, you tried once again to convince him, your hands gripping the front of his shirt. “Love, there’s a considerable difference between making out and having sex”, he said smirking while pulling away from your neck and looking at you with those red eyes that made your knees weak.
“Yeah, yeah I know that, but-“, you tried again, but he immediately interrupted you with a slightly tense look: “What do you mean you know?” “Just because I’m a virgin, doesn’t mean I haven’t done anything before, we’re living in the twenty first century after all”, you said rolling your eyes at his possessive nature (trying to hide it also made you feel a certain way). This conversation wasn’t really going in the direction you wanted it to, because now he looked positively pissed off. You really did forget sometimes that his views and morals were from a different millennia, getting yourself in trouble once again. “Other men have…touched you before?”, he asked with a dangerously calm voice, his eyes narrowed on you. “Uhm…I wouldn’t say men, more like boys or someth…”, your voice chocking up under his fiery gaze, your hands slowly releasing his shirt while the hand on your hip tightened her grip. After staring at you for a few seconds with furrowed brows, seemingly thinking about something he finally opened his mouth: “Alright, we will try.”
You must’ve looked like a deer caught in the headlights, because he adds with a smirk: “Not today though, don’t worry amore.” Before you could muster up an answer he already claimed your lips again with a short, but passionate kiss before pulling back and leaving you breathless again. “If I’d known making you jealous would make it happen, I would have tried that months ago”, you giggled, beaming up at him with joy. “Don’t get your hopes up love, I can’t promise you anything”, he said with a serious look, shifting you both so that he was laying on his back with you on top, your head comfortably against his shoulder.
“I know, thank you for trying though baby”, you smiled, pressing a small kiss to his neck. He hummed, his eyebrows furrowing again slightly. “I really don’t like the idea of other men touching you”, he shared his feelings making you giggle slightly. “Don’t worry my love, since the day I met you I knew you’d be the only touching me from now on”, you promised smiling, feeling him relax underneath you. He pulled the blanket over both of you, knowing he’s cooling you down.
“(Y/N)”, he quietly said while pressing a kiss to your head. “Mhm?”, you hummed, your eyes closed, satisfied with having him back in your arms. “I love you”, he whispered, making your heart skip a beat. You immediately pushed yourself back up, looking into his eyes completely stunned. Considering he was such a strong and tall man, he looked kind off unsure right now waiting for your reaction. But you didn’t even have to think about it, a smile forming on your face. “I love you”, you whispered back. His face relaxed right away and he was pulling you down to meet your lips in another kiss, this one more soft and gentle than the others.
——————
A small explanation as to why (Y/N) didn’t say “I love you too”: I read somewhere, a long time, that when someone says “I love you too” it feels like they’re just like accepting or confirming what the first person said instead of really meaning that they love the other person and it kind off stuck with me.
The Siege of Volterra : the Vampire war no one knows about
The Siege of Volterra : the Vampire war no one knows about
Aro and the Volturi must decide to engage the invading German army or flee their centuries-old home.
Aro's POV-1944, Italy, occupied Volterra
I was inspired to write this after reading some Tumblr people questioning if the Volturi helped out Italy during the second World War. This is my response as a one-shot and it's kind of long over my usual one-shots.
* Some locations have been made up. Research about Volterra's history during WW2, not easy *
oooooooooooooooooooo
When the Nazis invaded Italy in 1940, I assumed Volterra might eventually become an occupied city. I wasn't happy with that thought. The Volturi had held control of this city for countless hundreds of years. Who were these Saxon mongrels to think they could take our home away from us. Marcus, Caius, and I called for a meeting with the entire coven to discuss what actions should be taken. We would have to decide whether we would hide underground, leave the city entirely, or fight against this impudent invading army?
When the occupation finally happened, the mood of the city completely changed. No more weekend gatherings in the piazza with music and dancing. No more festivals. The humans were virtual prisoners in their own homes. Now we had no choice but to make decisions, both for their protection and ours. I would not tolerate the Germans locking us down as well. Our bi-weekly meal deliveries were at stake. Without that, we would have no choice but to feed off the humans within our walls, something I hoped we would not have to resort to.
Our symbiotic relationship with the Volterrans had been beneficial for us all. The city's human leadership turned a blind eye to rumours about us, deflecting any prying into our business. We paid them well for their aid and loyalty, with the threat of death hanging over their heads and those of their families as insurance. The Mayor, the Chief of Police, and the Bishop of Volterra were a few of the more important humans taken into our confidence, and they had served us well.
First, we had to decide how important our home was. Moving to another location would take time and effort. Right now, most of Europe was involved in the war, and there were few places the Germans and their allies had not already occupied. Marcus spoke up first, wanting to keep our home here in Volterra. He didn't care how that would be accomplished.
Caius agreed. "I prefer to fight rather than hide or run like cowards. These are just humans, after all. I say we fight." He had a point.
I readily agreed, but how would we fight the Germans without revealing ourselves to them or the rest of the city? Caius was willing to set up plans of attack. The idea of killing humans excited the former commander, as I knew it would. An offensive by the Volturi would not only protect our home, it would also protect the city. These foolish humans, however, deserved whatever we gave them. They were disrupting the peace of our city in their quest for world dominance. For once, I felt humans needed to be controlled and by whom better than us.
The most important block to quick defeat was there were more human invaders than there were Volturi. Jane and Alec would be important in any vanguard that would move against these Nazis. Jane's gift incapacitated vampires, but it could kill a human if the illusion of pain was intense enough. Alec's gift would make that easier by blinding, deafening, and silencing the humans first. After so long, I trusted Jane. She worked well with no supervison, and with her brother Alec at her side, I knew they would make short work of the Nazis.
We decided we needed intel, the more information, the better. Since an all out assualt was not feasible, we would pick off the humans one by one. They expected no resistance, therefore more soldiers were kept in key locations, while fewer stood as guards. By day, their presence was more intrusive. They would eat at the cafes and shop at the stores, some genuinely enjoying mingling with the Volterrans. But after darkness fell, small groups of four to five soldiers would walk the streets at night, enforcing curfew and making sure no one was out committing sabotage.
One night, our sharp ears heard the sound of gun shots. When I called Mayor Guiseppe to find out what had happened, he explained several young men had tried to steal a jeep being used by the Germans. They had been shot without ceremony. I strongly advised the mayor to make it illegal for citizens to harass the Germans. He agreed, making it clear he would tolerate no one bothering the invaders. He didn't want to see any more of his people die at the hands of the Nazis. The fact the city remained quiet for weeks after the order was issued, indicated his warnings had worked, and that was to our advantage.
I sent Felix and Demetri to find out where the Nazis were based, the silent speed of the guards making this an easy task. I had wanted to keep an eye on their positions. Was there one main headquarters, or several locations where soldiers kept vigilance over the city's population. They returned a few hours later with plenty of news.
"Master Aro, the museum that was the Palazzo dei Medici is where the Germans have set up their headquarters. A Colonel Friedrich Mannheim is in charge of the city's occupation force," Felix said. "They have approximately 400 soldiers based there while another 100 or so are constantly monitoring the streets. They're using the rooms of the villa as quarters while Colonel Mannheim has exclusive use of the Blue Room."
I knew the Blue Room well. Royalty had slept there over the centuries. Once, I had been invited to the palazzo during the 1760s, and as an honoured guest, I had been afforded the use of one of the prettiest servant women while staying in the Blue Room. I pleasured myself with her body for a few hours, before slashing her throat and slaking my sudden hunger. I hated killing her, but the scent of her blood was too much. Sadly, it made me thirsty. I had to hide the body and make up some story to my hosts. It was so long ago and of little consequence, but some memories linger longer than others.
Of course, the human military leader would choose the very best for himself. The fact that particular castle was chosen would make it easy for us to plan an attack. I knew the floorplan, and helped Caius map out every level.
Demetri gave his report next. "There are five satellite stations scattered around the city, each manned by no more than twenty-five humans. There are two check points, one at the old city gate and one along the newer roadway into the city. Everyone is heavily armed." He smiled, knowing their weapons would have no effect on vampires. "There's no danger for us there. Even if they get a chance to use them."
"We have to consider the humans who will be backing us up, Demetri," I reminded our tracker. "For now, we will act alone. But I trust there will be human volunteers who will gladly help us when we are ready to attack the Palazzo dei Medici. I plan to call Chief de Luca to see how many he can gather." I looked over at Caius who smiled and nodded.
Later, I spoke with the chief of police, Angelo de Luca, in person. He knew about our nature, but he and his small police force were well paid to stifle any rumours about us and to make sure we were left in peace. Losing Volturi protection and financial support was not something anyone wanted.
"Angelo, my dear friend. We find we have a common enemy in these Germans, but we have the power to do something about it. It may mean the sacrifice of some of your people. Would they be willing to fight alongside us, not knowing what we are, of course." I knew from past experience that some humans were indeed brave and capable of fighting well.
"Master Aro, I know my people would willingly sacrifice their lives if it meant freeing their families from this scourge. Are you planning an attack soon?"
"Caius will be in charge of that. We're going to concentrate on killing those manning the city gates and outposts, and the groups of city sentries. The Germans are headquartered at the Palazzo dei Medici. We will take care of that last." De Luca listened raptly as I detailed our plan. "We haven't enough guards to replace those killed, so we will need some trusted humans to do that for us, wearing their uniforms and pretending to be Germans. I just need to know that your people can be ready when called upon."
"Of course, Master Aro. I will gather the best fighters Volterra has to offer, and wait for you to let us know when we're needed."
I knew I could trust the chief of police, as I had trusted his predecessors and would trust his successors. The entire city benefitted from the patronage of the Volturi, that was well known.
I stood, giving the human a smile, and held out my hand. He took mine in an affirmation of our long-time partnership. "We will free our city, Angelo," I assured him. "For both our kind."
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO
When the guards had returned from their first mission to take back the old city gate, I read each in turn. I saw, with satisfaction, their actions that led to success.
Heidi had worn a deep red dress, emphasizing her hour-glass figure, but she eschewed her gloves, the darkness of night making that possible. She styled her hair and applied her make-up just so. It was only window-dressing since her allure would take care of distracting the Germans, and once she was upon them, it would be too late for the humans.
The plan was for Felix, Afton, and Santiago to swoop in and assist Heidi in dispatching the hapless soldiers. A few lower-level guards would then take their uniforms and put them on, so to the curious, it would appear the gate was still being guarded. These guards were fluent in German, and would easily fool anyone, as long as they weren't called out as strangers. In that case, they were ordered to kill the humans, and do what they must to hide the bodies.
As she sashayed up to the jeep where several guards sat, her walk showing off her curvy hips, Heidi flashed a dazzling smile at the men. "Guten abend, meine Herren. Es ist eine schöne Nacht."
One of the soldiers jumped off the jeep, and smiled back at Heidi, his eyes revealing his admiration for her beauty. "Ja, Fräulein, das ist es in der Tat." He unconsciously licked his lips. "Du solltest nicht so spät draus sein, schöne. "
Heidi reached up to play with his uniform collar, all the while flirting not only with him, but every man sitting in the jeep, such was her irresistible vampiric allure. The man whispered something in German, and setting down his rifle, he drew Heidi into his embrace, nuzzling her neck.
At that moment, the three waiting guards jumped from the top of the brick arch overhead to land atop the soldiers still sitting in the jeep. Fingers grabbed hair and twisted necks, while teeth sank into soft flesh so fast, no screams emerged from the humans.
Heidi turned her head to bury her face into the lead soldier's neck, biting hard and swallowing as much blood as she could manage in so short a time. She may not have even been thirsty, but we don't refuse blood if the opportunity affords us an easy kill.
I released Heidi's hand and spoke to the four guards. "You all have done very well. The gate is ours. We will now look to the front entrance of the city and take that back. Once the city check points are under our control, we will go after their sentries, the individual guard stations, and lastly their headquarters. Soon, Volterrans will take our places, freeing us up for the main attack on the Palazzo dei Medici."
"Humans, Master Aro?" the tracker asked, confused.
"Yes, I spoke with the chief of police, and he will be gathering volunteers to help us with ridding ourselves of their guards, so we're able to go into the German headquarters. This is their city too, Demetri."
"Of course, Master Aro. I understand."
"Good. Caius, would you join the guards for the attack on the front gate?"
Caius' eyes gleamed as he slowly grinned. "With pleasure, brother."
With Marcus busy seeing to the attack plans in Caius' absence, he worked with Jane and Alec, instructing them on handling the sentries outside the headquarters, allowing the rest of us easy access into the castle. Then the twins would join us, disabling any who might fight us.
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO
The chosen group of guards, led by Caius, headed out to the forefront of Volterra under the cover of darkness. I waited in the throne room with Marcus now, wishing there were some way to see what was happening, but we would have to wait for their return. I paced the marble floor. Perhaps I should have gone as well, but no, I knew Caius was the best leader for this mission.
Several hours later, Caius returned with our triumphant guards. I quickly took my brother's hand and saw what had transpired on this latest mission.
Our people approached the human guards walking the length of the road they had been assigned to watch. Santiago and Afton began to speak to them in German, confusing their prey. Once they were close enough, they attacked. Heads were twisted, while some used only their teeth as weapons. Caius shouted orders while our guards easily defeated the humans. Soon, silence permeated the air. Caius told the lower guards to don the uniforms of the German soldiers and walk along the road as they had seen them do.
"So we now have the front city entrance as well," I said.
"Yes, Aro. Now we go after the city sentries and replace them with our people."
"I will check with De Luca to see if his people can take our places once these locations have been secured. I would prefer they not be present when we do attack the Germans."
When I called the chief of police to ask for his assistance, he agreed, saying he had 50 ready and able men willing to replace our people at all the gates and outposts currently manned by us. Once night fell, they would do that, freeing up the guards to join us at the Palazzo dei Medici.
I had ordered our kind to wear contacts when around the humans. When their volunteers approached, Felix greeted them and gave them their orders. Just as one human began to remove the uniform off a dead soldier, another who was not quite dead, turned to pull a gun from inside his jacket and pointed it at the man. Felix sped between them, deflecting the bullet before he finished off the soldier.
"Thank you. My name is Sergio," he said, his hand out.
Felix took the man's hand with his own glove-covered one and shook it. "I'm Felix. I couldn't let him just shoot you."
Both human and vampire laughed, before getting back to work. It pleased me to see our peoples working side by side. If our nature were to be discovered by any human, we would have no choice but to kill them. I hoped that would not be necessary.
The work contunued, and it wasn't long before every vampire had been replaced by a human.
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO
It had been days since we had destroyed the Nazis serving outside the palazzo, and the entire coven was now ready and eager to attack. Several of the vampire guards speed-scaled the walls of the castle until they reached the windows, smashing the glass and jumping inside whatever rooms they found themselves in. They eliminated any Germans they ran into as they headed to the lower floors and the room I had ordered everyone to meet us.
Soldiers aimed their pathetic weapons at the advancing vampires, shooting them, surprised when seeing the bullets bouncing off them harmlessly. In a flash, the vampires sped to them, pulling the weapons from their hands before they could react, and destroying them. Then the vampires killed the soldiers.
Marcus, Caius, and I entered the palace through the front entrance. Alec blinded the Germans, then Jane imagined pain in each soldier we met up with. Some died from the intensity of the pain, others found themselves immobilized and writhing on the ground.
By the time we five had reached the Blue Room, Colonel Mannheim had already baracaded himself inside, surrounding himself with as many soldiers as he could muster in so short a time. Felix pushed on the twin doors, easily forcing them open. Bullets began to fly at my executioner, none harming him as he went into attack mode, his visage dark and frightening. He was followed by Demetri, Santiago. and others. Uniformed bodies flew across the room, while Mannheim attempted to hide. So the leader of the invasion force was a coward at heart. True commanders I can respect, but cowards deserve the worst of deaths.
Jane and Alec entered the large room and stood by, waiting for my order. Soon, every last soldier was lying around the room, dead. All save for Mannheim. I wanted to save him for last.
When Mannheim attempted to run, I gave Alec a nod. He sent out tendrils of dark grey smoke, catching up with and surrounding the human, blocking his senses. He stood still, unable to see a thing.
I turned to Jane. "Go ahead, my dear."
She merely stared at the human, when he suddenly cried out in pain and dropped to the floor.
I reached down and picked up the human by the throat. He had four inches on me, but my strength made it easy to ignore his height. I grinned up at him, feeling pure hatred. "You are nothing but a coward, and should die like one." My eyes focused on Mannheim.
"What are you?" he asked, his voice shaky. So he noticed my eyes, now dark red with anger.
I could reveal myself to him, since these were the last few minutes of his life. "I am a vampire. Your kind attempted to take our city from us. For that, you all must die. You will be my last kill. I'm telling you the truth about us, before I rip your throat out."
He struggled to speak, my hand gripping his neck tightly. "My men...where...are they?"
"Gone, all of them. The invaders of our town have been vanquished."
I saw abject fear in his eyes now. This spurred me on with a great deal of satisfaction.
"And now it's your turn." I clenched my fingers tighter, the nails digging into soft flesh. I felt the warmth of blood dripping down my hand. The colonel's eyes bulged, his hands attempting to pull mine off him. His head began to tilt awkwardly to the right as his eyes went dead but still open. Then his head fell to the floor, blood splashing around us to pool on the marble tiles. I had let his body fall on top of his head, hiding his fearful expression.
"Felix, get some others and clean up this mess. I don't want to leave it for the humans to manage. Burn them all. Then return to the castle."
Marcus and Caius returned with me to the castle, where I sat in my office and called our allies to let them know the city was ours again.
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO
The citizens of Volterra celebrated their freedom from the Nazis with music and dancing in the streets. The Mayor, the Chief of Police, and I met, the humans who knew about us expressing their gratitude to me for our work in ejecting the occupation forces. The coven members who wanted to join in the celebration were given permission to do so. Wearing regular street clothing and contacts, they readily mingled among the humans. I had given everyone a stern warning to behave and leave the humans alive, or face immediate punishment.
When the guards met up with the singing crowds, the warning was unnecessary. Everyone was jubilant at their success, human and vampire alike.
I saw Felix across the road, a human male walking up to him. It was Sergio. I could hear him as he slapped our tall guard on the arm, expressing gratitude to him for saving his life. Felix looked down at the man, smiling back, telling him it was unnecessary to thank him, as they walked off together, talking while grabbing some drinks being handed out to people gratis. Felix took a bottle, toasting with the other humans, but he did not drink, of course.
"I never imagined that vampires would one day be our saviors, Master Aro. We owe you so much," Angelo said
"My friend, we have worked beside your ancestors for centuries in keeping the city safe for humans and vampires alike. I will not allow this war to disrupt it now. Come, let us join the others in the celebration." I gently clapped my hand on his back as we walked to join the crowd.
Stories later circulated among the Germans that the city of Volterra was haunted, and no one wanted to send any troops there again. I found that humourous while I looked out my upper floor office window down to the streets below. The city was vibrant with life again. Everything was back to normal for us and for the humans who fought beside us.
A/N : I like to write stories many writers don't think of. I hope my readers liked this one. No human mates, no romance, but we see the Volturi in a new light as defenders of their home, Volterra.
17/ ∞ No place like home - Volterra: The town that The Volturi call home was founded by them in 978 BC, then known as ‘Velathri’. Becoming their base of operations and the centre of vampiric culture. It is also heralded as the safest place to live in the world, much of it is attributed to the strict laws around hunting as well as the fact that The Volturi owns all of the town and the surrounding areas to this day.
Spider Lilies and the Sun (Alec x Reader)
A Twilight fanfiction
Author's note: Check out my blog. I take requests <3
Tumblr media
Carefully, you tried to draw the spider lilies that were lying on the wooden table in front of you. Your pencil drew a line here and there, deepening the shadows or adding a new leaf. It was difficult for you to capture the lightning appropriately on the thick parchment that you studied for a moment, drawing your head back to create some distance. To some extent you were satisfied with what you have produced so far. You have never been especially good at drawing, but somehow you have a hand for illustrating the beauty of flowers just enough to distinguish yourself from a beginner. But if you would ever reach the skills of a professional artist was hard to say… Only time could tell.
While you drew, you listened to the conversation between Heidi, Chelsea, and Corin. The three vampires were sitting on the sofas that were situated in the middle of the drawing room of the Volturi’s castle. Soft sunlight shone through the windows, and you had opened one in the corner you had isolated yourself in. The temperate late summer breeze smelled wonderful, tickling your nostrils and helping you relax.
“Have you heard that the coven in France tried to trick the Kings?” asked Heidi in her enticing voice, playing with her dark hair as her legs were swung over the armrest of the armchair that she was lounging in. Her short skirt had hiked up dangerously, but Heidi knew how to be classy without coming off as cheap. Her legs were pressed together, revealing nothing inappropriate.
Chelsea nodded vigorously, not looking up from the book she was reading. “Of course, we have heard,” she remarked. Her tone was stoic and cold, but she didn’t mean it. You had learned that she was generally nice and didn’t have any mean intentions. But that was all. You would never expect a selfless act from her. Not from any of the vampires living in Volterra. “The French coven was the reason why Aro sent the twins, Demetri, and Felix to investigate. After all, the coven’s leader claimed that they have created a newborn with extraordinary abilities. The rumor spread like wildfire and eventually reached us, the Volturi. How could it not?”
Corin snorted and shook her head in disbelief. “Turned out the coven leader boasted a little too much.”
“Right,” chimed in Heidi, chuckling. “Apparently, they wanted to bargain with the Kings and offer the newborn for a price. But said newborn didn’t possess any special abilities at all. When Demetri and Felix called to inform the Kings, they mentioned that Alec was absolutely livid.” With a knowing grin, she looked at you and caught your eye. Quickly you looked back down at your sheet, acting like that strange and yet familiar name hadn’t caught your attention. Heidi’s voice sounded insinuating when she added, “We all know that lately he has no room for unnecessary distractions that could lead him astray from the castle.”
Heat rose to your cheeks, and you couldn’t say why. Only that Alec, even just the mention of his name, induced you with extreme nervousness. And a giddiness that you had tried to suppress by distracting yourself and drinking lots of water to drown the butterflies in your stomach. Alec. He was mesmerizing, absolutely enchanting. And also the reason why you, as a human, found yourself among vampire royalty. One day you decided to take a walk and breathe fresh air. While you were walking through the forest, looking defeated at your feet because the pressure that came with your studies really got to you that day, a pair of polished, expensive shoes came into view. Surprised, you looked up, staring into the beautiful red eyes of a young man who towered over you. Considering his insatiable stare, you probably should have been afraid, but you weren’t. There was something oddly calming about the way he gazed at you and how the wheels in his head seemed to turn before they finally clicked, and his hungry stare was replaced with a deep softness. Then, black mist enveloped you, and after many hours of traveling, you found yourself in Volterra.
You had been living with the vampires for a little over three months and found it hard to adjust to your new life. You hadn’t been told why Alec brought you to Volterra, but the Kings had informed you that one day when the time was ripe, you would become one of them. You had no clue when the time would be ripe, but for now, that was unimportant.
You were glad that everyone realized that you needed a lot of space and time alone. You had your own room and designated corners – like the one in the drawing room – that were solely reserved for you. Whenever you decided to take refuge in these places, everyone knew you wanted to be left alone. Fortunately, everyone was patient with you and answered your questions whenever you had any. The vampires learned to respect your boundaries, or rather, they had known how to do that all along since they were territorial beings. In turn, you learned to respect their limits and expectations. For example, you had to stay in your chamber when they fed in the throne room or when trials were being held. During these times, the vampires were especially busy, and no one could keep an eye on you to make sure you were not becoming a snack for the lower guard.
As for Alec... you got along fine. There were moments when he seemed like he wanted to open up to you, but then he would withdraw suddenly, sitting down somewhere and watching you with a wistful expression while you read or drew. He kept you at arms-length: close enough but not too close. He didn’t want to give you away either. If anything, he was strangely possessive, and at the same time, aloof. He would be attentive one day, and the next he would pretend like you didn’t exist. It drove you insane.
Well, at the beginning it did… After some frustrating nights, when you couldn’t sleep because of his behavior, you decided it was not worth spending the energy you needed on overthinking. You would just do you, stick to yourself, and be nice to Alec when he approached you. But you would refuse to seek him out. Your pride and self-respect put you first in this confusing connection with the vampire. You had never been in love, always waiting for the right one. Of course, you met men and thought that they might be your forever person only to end up disappointed because it turned out they were only being nice to you for sexual fun. Something you never gave them. Now, Alec was a classy guy. He was the type to court respectfully, and if he wanted some fun, he would be straightforward. Nonetheless, his intentions were anything but clear to you. So, you sought stability in yourself; if he had something to say, he could always do it, but you wouldn’t run after him.
Honestly, you were glad when you heard that he would go on a mission to France. His name was playing on repeat in your head like a prayer whether he was present or not, and you did need some time to yourself to get that foolish heart of yours, which sometimes beat like you were love-struck, in check again. And so far, it had worked wondrously. In the past few days, you had barely thought about him at all.
“So,” began Corin, resuming the conversation about the French coven, “what happened to the coven? Did Alec act on his anger? Lately, he has been inclined to do so. His emotions are running high. Higher than usual.”
Heidi giggled excitedly. “Well, luckily, Felix and Demetri could talk him out of it. The coven got away with a warning. The twins, the giant, and the tracker should return today.”
Your throat constricted. You didn’t know if you really wanted to see Alec. Hopefully, he would just ignore you. But your hopes were crushed. Two hours later the door to the drawing room opened, and Alec came inside. The girls stopped talking abruptly, looking between you and the elite guard. Alec’s posture was imposing, and with one narrowed glance and a barely noticeable tilt of his head, he commanded them to leave. Sighing and voicing their discontent, Heidi, Corin, and Chelsea left. The thud of the door when it closed sounded too foreboding. You focused on your drawing - you had begun with another one, not quite satisfied with your first try.
You hoped that Alec would just sit on the sofa, but unfortunately, he drew up a chair opposite you, and you focused on the movement of your pencil, not looking up.
His voice was deep and warm when it rang out. “How have you been? Are you well?”
“I’m good,” you replied stubbornly, making it clear that you didn’t want to talk to him. But Alec did not defer. He picked up your first drawing. That was when you gazed up anxiously at him. You didn’t want him to see your art. Why? Because in a way, you depended on his validation. What if he didn’t think of your drawing as good enough? Then you would suck it up and live with it. You wouldn’t let it affect your motivation for your artistic nature though.
The corners of Alec’s mouth were raised slightly when he saw your anxious expression, knowing he got to you. But if he hadn’t been sitting so close to you, you would have thought he was wearing his typical inscrutable expression. He leaned back in his chair, crossing his legs, holding your crafted spider lily up with one hand while he examined it, and gripping the armrest with his other hand. He wasn’t wearing gloves. That was unusual… The hand on the armrest glittered as it caught the sunlight. It was the only body part of his that was exposed to the sun. He didn’t like to shine in the sunlight. When you first saw how his skin reacted to the sun, he became angry. Not with you. But with the sun, you think. You were taking a stroll through the garden together, and when you reached up to touch his cheek as it began to glow, he pushed you away and told you to leave. That hurt.
“Hmmm…” Alec hummed, nodding. “You are improving. You have a talent for drawing.” With care, he placed the paper down on the desk.
Your body betrayed you when your heart rate picked up and your cheeks flushed pink. You were beyond happy. Somehow you managed to suppress the reply – “Do you really think so?” – that was beginning to form. You bit your tongue hard.
“How was France?” you asked instead.
“I have been there many times. It was worthwhile. As always.”
“Good to hear.”
“I would like to visit it with you someday. I have been there so often that it has become a little… boring and stale. But I feel like your presence would make the atmosphere special again.”
Suspiciously, you narrowed your eyes. Here we go again with the ambiguous meanings… “What do you mean? Alec, sorry, but you have not been exactly welcoming towards me. One moment you are hot, and the other you are cold and don’t let me in. I still don’t know why you brought me to this shit hole in which I’m supposed to spend eternity. You owe me a lot of explanations.”
His eyes studied you. He contemplated long, his red orbs wandering down to your collarbone and noting how well your cropped cardigan and your high-waisted jeans fitted you. Your body was bliss to him. Your personality meant salvation. He had to come forward. He knew he was being unfair, and how could he be unjust to someone he loved?
Without warning, he pushed back his chair, creating a scraping sound, and stood up. He walked towards you, grabbing the backrest of your stool and turning it around. You were now looking up at him, and your heart stuttered as he lowered his torso, placing his hands on the armrests, caging you. His brown, thick locks fell in front of his forehead, and his red orbs bored holes into the core of your soul. You nervously played with your hands in your lap, biting your lips.
“Don’t do that,” he spoke softly, his breath fanning your face.
“What?”
“Biting your lip. You always do it when you are nervous or stressed. You have been doing it while I was gone.” He used his thumb to smooth your lips. You swallowed hard at the skin contact. “I can see little wounds.” Was that why he decided to not wear gloves? Had he been planning to initiate physical contact?
You pushed his hand away. “What do you want?”
“Fine,” he grunted, straightening himself up. “I will be blunt about it.”
“Naturally.”
“You are my mate,” he admitted. Carefully, he studied your reserved features. But you felt anything but reserved. You were elated. Finally, you found the love you had always wished for. You had envied the connection Afton and Chelsea shared, how they gazed at each other with unprecedented adoration. Often, you had watched them interacting, wondering when you could not only be loved like Afton loved Chelsea but when you could finally look as ardently at someone the way Chelsea stared at Afton. You wanted to love, too. Not just be loved. What you and Alec could have… maybe that would rival their connection and put them to shame.
“What do you think?” Alec asked, testing the waters.
“Only that it all makes sense now. My palpitating heart when you are near or how I can’t get your name out of my head.” Contemplatively, you looked up at Alec. “That’s why you brought me to Volterra. When we met in the forest, you sensed that I was your mate.”
“I did.”
You stood up, bringing your hands to his cheeks. He brought your foreheads together, and you enjoyed the coldness of his touch. On a warm summer day, there was no one you wanted to bury yourself in more passionately than Alec.
“You fear this connection as much as I do,” you whispered. “That’s why you are sometimes so aloof. You are afraid of getting hurt. So am I. And honestly, in your presence, I find it hard to think straight. It is like my emotions don’t belong to me but to you.”
“Yes. They spiral out of control, and only you, as my counterpart, can reach them. Tame them.”
“Then I will cherish them and hold them close. You have nothing to fear, Alec.”
Tentatively Alec closed the gap between the two of you, tasting your lips in a reassuring kiss. It seemed that you had nothing to fear either.
