Unleashing Creativity: Top Ways to Generate Unique Fantasy Story Ideas
Tumblr media
Photo: Standard License- Adobe Stock
Welcome back,
There's no denying that fantasy has been at the core of some of the most enchanting, daring, and downright unforgettable tales (for one reason or another) that have shaped the literary landscape. Who doesn't love the thrill of journeying to some new adventurous place with otherworldly creatures and epic battles between the forces of dark and light? Personally, I'm all about the dark side. Even for the most seasoned writers sparking the imagination can be difficult. Things like inspiration seem elusive as a dragon hiding in a mist-covered mountain. Today, I will cover a few ideas to find your muse. My muse sometimes hides in a dumpster...so let's find better ways to do this, shall we?
People Watching, with a Twist: Observing people in everyday situations can be a great source of inspiration. Now, add a layer of 'What If?'. What if the barista at your local coffee shop could control elements? What if the older woman feeding pigeons in the park was a retired warrior queen? This exercise allows you to create complex characters with intriguing backstories, ripe for the world of fantasy.
Travel Through Time: History is brimming with periods that, with a little twist, can become fantastic settings for your story. Victorian England's social hierarchies, the Renaissance's scientific innovations, and the fierce battles of Feudal Japan offer fertile ground for fantastical tales. Weave in elements of magic or mythical creatures, and you have an intoxicating cocktail of historical fact and enticing fantasy.
Bioinspiration – Fantasize with Flora and Fauna: The natural world is a veritable treasure trove of inspiration. Let's call this approach 'bioinspiration.' Start by exploring Earth's biodiversity's peculiar traits, behaviors, and survival mechanisms. Why not envision a species that communicates like whales but hunts like a pack of wolves? Or perhaps a plant that blooms under the moonlight and has the power to manipulate time? The possibilities are endless when you fuse the wonder of our world with a dash of fantasy.
Take a Hike (Literally!): When was the last time you truly engaged with the wilderness, the mountains, or the sea? Natural landscapes are rife with potential for fantasy storytelling. As you walk through a dense forest, consider the creatures that might inhabit such a place in a fantasy realm. That murmuring stream could be a water nymph's dwelling, and the wind howling through the canyon might be a dragon's call. Try to visualize your surroundings through the lens of fantasy — you may be surprised at what your imagination conjures up!
Harness the Power of Music: Like music, few things can stir the soul and spark the imagination. A piece of music can evoke many emotions and images depending on its rhythm, melody, and harmony. Try listening to music without lyrics (like classical, orchestral, or ambient music) and let your mind wander. Picture the scenes that the music evokes. Is that tranquil harp melody the song of a peaceful elven village? Does the tumultuous symphony represent the climax of an epic battle? Use these mental images as a springboard for your fantasy narrative.
So there it is, everyone. Five unique ways to draw up some inspiration. Go find your muse!! Probably shouldn't have said mine hides in a dumpster. I'm all about being superstitious, so I'm sure she'll never speak to me again.
Happy Writing,
Indigo Everly

The adage “show, don’t tell” is so common that many of us hear it before we understand what it means. To make this more confusing, “show, don’t tell” is incredibly reductive, hiding a complex concept behind simple words. Showing and telling aren’t actually a binary, and what these terms refer to changes with context. In some situations, this advice is also just wrong. While most writers should show more, telling is also essential.
Let’s demystify the phrase by digging into what it really means, why it’s important, and how it applies to fiction writing.

Me to my spouse:
"My energy is drained now... now that I understand wordcraft (writing magic) I realized I've basically been doing a beginner version of it... so I just did something a little more... intermediate I guess... I just put a curse on [redacted] 🙃 the curse is basically the more the employees suffer and the company fails to treat them as human beings and not easily replaceable machines the more the company shall lose in terms of profits and sales until they go bankrupt and fail unless they adjust"
For context, it's a method from Lisa Marie Basile's "The Magical Writing Grimoire" where I started writing things I held in and wish I told the company. After that paragraph of info dumping and rage and went into writing a very detailed curse in the form of a warning to the company and ended with "so it is written, so shall it be". The company will not receive this letter as it is in my personal journal. The letter therefore serves as a spell cast upon the company. I even signed and dated it.
I highly recommend the book for learning wordcraft and all forms of writing magic. I got it as a form of reference to research the writing magic section of my book for creative witches.
Happy crafting and happy holidays

Nobody seems to know what i mean when i tell them i'm "letting an au percolate" which is already funny, but whats funnier to me is that whenever i do percolate on a fic concept i always end up with insane ideas such as: "scarian au inspired by iron man where scar is both mayor and a scummy business man turning over a new leaf as a masked superhero, MUMBO is his AI who is becoming better friends with the new PA Grian, and Grian happens to be performing industrial espionage on behalf of the Watchers which are actually a mega corporation trying to buy Scar out and influence his policies. This is in fact a commentary on capitalism and men will be kissing about it."

How did you become such a good writer? You have an amazing imagination and such a way with words that really makes me feel like "oh shit, I'm physically in the world of this book experiencing what the characters are." You write like nobody else I have seen in the Elvis fanficdom (I truly mean that) and I am humbled by your talent.
Please tell me a little more about your writing process! I hope to one day write even half as good as you.
(Also I need you to continue the Elvis x Godfather AU fic, kthx. Pretty please? I will even help you with Italian dialogue, lol. I'll do anything for it. Here, take my firstborn. :P )
Oh my darling, this is a downright humbling ask. Between insecurity and imposter syndrome, it’s a wonder I manage to keep enough words from being deleted that I’ve actually got series of fics in progress. 🥶 So truly, I’m astounded and touched by your compliments and I adore chatting writing, so let’s see if some rambling of thoughts will be of any aid to you. 🌹 I just snuck a peak at your current fic (forgive me that I’m not in a season where I am reading much, it’s nothing personal, just business that is currently keeping me from exploring more) and I was immediately sucked in by how gorgeously you describe action? It’s poetic yet not overburdened, the way you write people’s movements and elements moving, makes me envy you that. I often feel my descriptions are quite Spartan most the time, so hearing it mentioned as transporting is always a surprise. I don’t think of it as my strong suite. I’ve no real notion how to write a kiss, for instance. Ha.
So, stories…They come to me usually as intriguing beginnings, with an occasional outpost of a stellar scene or two in the middle, and then the muses sit back and cackle like malicious banshees as I beg them for an ending. So, most of my stories are started in faith, often abandoned halfway through, as no clear ending comes. But so far in this fandom I’ve made the most progress and due to the help of this community of friends, I actually have a plot end for both my works. I know some people think of an end and concoct plots around them, and for some it all seems to come at once. And then there’s me with the beginnings and no road map. Which camp do you consider yourself to be in? 😃
And then there’s the work of plotting and outlining which I wish I was better at, as it appeals to me. But the minute I do it, all creative force dies within me. So it’s all buried in my lil noggin for safe keeping until the time comes to write the chapter. What I do plan out, however, is an emotional arc to a story, and a redemption/devolution plot for each main character. Knowing what growth I want to happen when, and what setbacks occur at what times has given me the strangest freedom of settings to accomplish it in -often none I would have plotted out intentionally. But that way I’m not forcing my relationship to grow in the confines of my plot, but rather my plot is the vehicle for the relationship to form and grow. I adore motifs, and I try to pay attention to how they appear in real life. I believe life is very subtly cyclical and the stories that ring truest to me are likewise.
I have a nasty habit in real life of observing everything like it’s witting material. Long before I started writing, I used to feel rather like a detached observer of other people’s reactions to life. It made me notice types of people, and while you can’t peg folks (much as I find personality tests a rather fun attempt) I do hold fast to the fact that in a story, if someone changes for worse or better, if they react for worse or better, it needs to be in character. It’s amazing how much this little detail can help something feel real. You can have a character fail, but if they fail in a way that doesn’t ring true to what we know of them and their motivations, it’ll feel like unnecessary drama to me. Does that make sense? Likewise with the victories -which victories will mean much or little to them? Does it ring true as being fully what they’ve always worked for? And who are they working for? Their own happiness and success? Or do they find more satisfaction in aiding others to reach the summit? Anyway, watching and identifying types of people and keeping those traits consistent on paper is easier said than done, as I’m learning every day. 😂
Lastly, (I suppose) I’d credit any vocabulary, thematic potency and rich setting to the sheer amount of old books and songs I’ve grown up immersed in. My favorite authors are Stevenson, Dumas and Mitchell. All of them set their stories in the middle of massive, world-changing events, yet their stories remained personal. Culture and necessity shape a person as much as taste and upbringing or anything else, and it’s a delight to try to immerse myself in a world different from my own. Basic goodness and basic evil may always remain, but the shades of grey and the loved ones getting caught in events far more powerful than their own strengths and best intentions yet trying their utmost to do well in the times they have been placed in: those are the stories and themes I adore the most in songs and literature. And they’re starkly abundant in dear Elvis’ near mythic life arc. So, here I am weaving tales about what could have been. 🥹
My messages are always open for a grand ole chat about writing, if you ever wanna pop in. I love you dearly and appreciate you so much. And The Godfather AU?! Oh how it has my heart still! I’ll totally take you up on the dialogue and any other suggestions you have that might ignite the smoldering concept. 😘

\\English below//
Being alone in the circle, condensing the energy, calling up the spirit of the place, the spirit of the ancestors, the directions, the elements. Refocus, hold your breath, let the sound spring forth. Spinning. Stillness. The veil is torn. No longer so alone, filling the space and time that are unravelling. appearing in hollows, to be out of one and out of the other. Staring at the candle flame, closing our eyes and seeing it again, red edged with yellow and green. Repeating the sacred words, saying the prayers, clearing the air. The black, the dark, and the vision weaves, consolidates, tapestry on a weft. I could sing, I could dance, but I concentrate. I connect, pull and knot threads, unravel others. The water is cool, the smoke heavy. The cards sparkle under my fingers. The symbols take shape. Offerings are made. Thanks are said. The circle is broken, dissolved. The energies are deposited on the ground, on my forehead, flowing towards the ground, towards the Earth. Back to the here and now. The magic remains.

Writing Elytically: This Time, It's Details
(Last time, it was big-picture stuff!)
So you want to format your fic like the game
I'll start with two words: collect screenshots. The more in-game references you have for those "but how does the game do X?" moments, the easier it will be to find answers.
In addition to screenshots, try FAYDE, which is a searchable database of in-game text (including variables!) and a load-bearing part of my DE ficwriting process. I cannot say enough nice things about it and about @morgue-xiiv, who made and hosts it.
Next up: keep a style sheet, and update it like Kim will be *disappointed* if you don't.
What goes in a style sheet? All the zillion formatting guidelines and decisions you make when you put word to keyboard.
For example, while there are exceptions, the game's skillset dialogues usually follow this case-sensitive template:
SKILLNAME [Difficulty: Outcome] – What the skill says goes here, and it doesn't take quotation marks.
When you plug in the specifics, the result looks like this:
RHETORIC [Trivial: Success] – Words can be exchanged for goods and services.
Note the square brackets and the space-en dash-space that follows them. An en dash is this guy – not a hyphen (that's shorter -) or an em dash (that's longer —).
Also, the body text/content of dialogue uses different dashes again: two hyphens in a row. Here's what that looks like:
Tumblr media
I took a screenshot because on Tumblr, some browsers will automatically convert two consecutive hyphens to an em dash, which is a great way to make copy editors very sad.
Exceptions
We actually just saw one! That's because Perception follows:
PERCEPTION (SENSE) [Difficulty: Outcome] – What the skill says goes here, and it doesn't take quotation marks.
. . . except sometimes, when the game does it like:
PERCEPTION (Sense) [Difficulty: Outcome] – What the skill says goes here, and it doesn't take quotation marks.
I'll never know why they're different, but I would guess the team didn't have a "final reads are FINAL, stop re-writing after them you hooligans" policy, which intellectually I recognise is unlikely to end in apocalypse and emotionally I experience with the editorial equivalent of the meat sweats.
Another exception: Coach Physical Instrument just yells at you without following the template, which seems on brand:
COACH PHYSICAL INSTRUMENT – Bracing yet homophobic encouraging-slash-berating goes here!
Weirdly(?), Limbic System and Ancient Reptilian Brain do the same.
Other skills follow the template first, *then* just chime in the second-plus time they appear in a single dialogue event, like this trio from The Whole Sorry Way Down:
VOLITION [Challenging: Success] – Hey. Loser! This isn’t your bed. Get up. PAIN THRESHOLD [Medium: Success] – Oh, *god*.  PERCEPTION (HEARING) [Easy: Success] – Was that springs? And footsteps? They were moving away from you. VOLITION – What? Who cares? Get up, and cut the dramatics. PAIN THRESHOLD – They’re not dramatics. You’re in pain.  PERCEPTION (HEARING) – That’s… definitely footsteps. Getting closer, this time.
Oh my god, what else?!
SO MUCH ELSE. Let's see . . .
Active skill checks
Can I find a screenshot of one at the moment? No, because that would be easy. *facepalm* But here's how I formatted them in M+P when I was still obsessively checking the game to see how these things worked:
1. [Skill Level#: Difficulty] [Thing you're going to do.] "Thing you're going to say, if anything!"
And a concrete example:
YOU – 1. [Strike a Sam Bo pose.] “If you can best me in HAND-TO-HAND COMBAT.” 2. [Move aside.] “Sure, c’mon in.” 3. [Composure 15: Heroic] [Move aside.] “Of course. I’ve missed you.” Composure: Failure YOU – You move aside and get as far as “Of” before some involuntary emotion-muscle spasms. Your throat feels small, your face hot. Fat, guileless tears vanish into your beard.
Note that the dialogue option you "select" is bold, as is the outcome line. Also note that [Action you'll take] ends up in square brackets, but if you're going to lie, then you do it like so: (Lie.)
Miscellanea
Place names: Spelling and hyphenation can be a pain. If not using your own notes, I suggest FAYDE and screenshots; or, for variety, screenshots and FAYDE. Google is okay, but sometimes, it lies.
If you can't find evidence of how the game does it, make a decision and slap it in your style sheet. You're the captain now!
Tricky fish:
The place is Sur-la-Clef; the language is Suresne.
The place is Vesper; the language is Vespertine.
The place is Revachol; the demonym is Vacholière (Suresne) or Revacholian (Vespertine).
LA REVACHOLIÈRE – IF SHE IS SPEAKING, SHE SPEAKS LIKE THIS. Shivers doesn't, though, unless La Rev speaks "through" it.
Hjelmdallermann (bless you)
Satellite Officer X or Satellite-Officer X: The game does both, so pick the one you prefer -- or go full homage and switch it up.
Sam Bo
Wirrâl (I fucked up the accent in M+P and it still bothers me tbh)
There are always more, so keep adding to that style sheet. Kim's depending on you. <3
