The lust in his eyes was very noticeable by anyone who tried hard enough to see it.

Keigo was not even trying to hide it either. His sexiness was overbearing and you could feel it from across the room.

"He's looking over here again.." Your friend says unaware of the relationship between you and Keigo. You'd tell her, but because of your jobs it's hard to go public. He's a pro-hero and a double agent while you're an underground hero. The media would go crazy if they knew about you two. There would be a mixture of shock, anger, maybe even respect, but the Hero Commission has advised against going public... strongly.

"Really?" You ask and take a sip of whatever your friend has ordered you. Honestly your attention was lost long ago. Keigo has kept your attention all night.

As an underground hero you'd usually avoid huge social gatherings like these but Keigo convinced you to go. Popular heroes like Endeavor, Best Jeanist, and even Mirko were standing around posing, being interviewed, talking to other heroes, etc. Keigo had noticed your discomfort right away, so being as cheeky as he is he texted you to meet him in a secluded area ten minutes after he walked over there.

When you went over to him the blond started complimenting you. He talked about how pretty you look in your dress, he praised you for doing your hair and makeup, and so on. That was about two hours ago...

"Yeah, I think he wants to fuck you because if those aren't bedroom eyes then I don't know what is." She squeals and wiggles her brows at you.

A real smile invaded your face for maybe the 3rd time tonight. You were being uptight because of the Commission's words. Even though this is a private event, you didn't want to risk it. Keigo clearly didn't care (not surprising at all) because he was openly flirting with you.

You were pulled out of your thoughts by a tap on your shoulder. "May I have a dance with you, beautiful?" Some hero you couldn't bother to remember asks you. Several men and women had already asked something similar which you had kindly turned down.

"I'm good than-" A cheeky arm wrapped around your waist and you began to panic.

"What business do you have with my wife?" Keigo questions and you about have a heart attack.

"Hawks?! Wife... oh my- I'm so sorry. I didn't know." The hero scurries off and you glare at your husband.

You couldn't even get a word in because your friend yells in shock and excitement, "you're married?! To Hawks?!" You hold a finger to your lips and your eyes widen. Its no use though because people are already looking at you and Keigo, whispering things you can't hear.

In seconds there's a TV crew in your face.

"Number two pro hero, Hawks has been secretly married. What is it like being his wife?" Some lady with a mic asks.

Some other guy asks, "How long have you two been married?"

If you were overwhelmed before than you're extremely overwhelmed now.

Your friend looks at you a frown on her face as she tries to apologize for bringing attention over to you two.

Keigo scoops you up bridal style, and flies out of an open window, "Adios, paparazzi~" he says.

When you two get far enough away he lands and sets you down, "darling... i'm so sorry. I just had enough, you were hit on like eight times and it made my stomach drop." He says softly.

You glare at him, "that's no excuse Keigo! I am your wife. Which means I married you, which means I'm not going to be swayed by some random hero asking me out! Do you have any trust in me?!" You shout at him, anger seeping through your tone.

"It's not you baby, its me.. I fear you'll find someone better suited for you..." his voice is small as he speaks.

"Keigo Takami. How long have we been together for?" you ask sternly.

His golden eyes meet yours, "three years."

"Not married, how long have we been together in general?" you ask clearing up your question.

"Oh.. forever." He says with a weak smile.

"Exactly, which means I have no reason to leave you!" A sigh escapes your lips.

You gesture for him to come closer, he does. You cup his face and kiss him softly.

You can tell he wants more from the way he squeezes your hips but you pull back with a lazy smirk.

"You are going to get a fucking earful from the Commission." you say with a dry chuckle.

He pales at your statement.

"Oh shit... they're gonna skin me alive..." he groans.

"Should have thought about that before basically telling all of Japan I'm yours." You say with a shrug.

He scoops you up bridal style again and flies you two home.

"It was totally worth it though." He smirks.

You roll your eyes at him, your husband is something else.

Another all might vs AFO rematch is so unnecessary and really shows that hori is doing whatever he thinks is "cool" for this final arc and throwing logic and writing out the window. This honestly brings down all mights character for me.

Anonymous asked: I guess quirkless deku could've been a hero, all he needed was an iron man suit apparently lmao. If all might holds AFO back for even a minute, it's going to make AFO look super weak and all the people who had quirks trying to stop him look even weaker. I mean hori built the whole story up as you need a quirk to do hero work and then he just gives all might a iron man suit out of nowhere just to have him fight again? Yeah that's bad writing.

I'll take these two asks together. Admittedly, I didn't read the EN fandom reactions to this chapter, bc I loved it and I didn't want to see the inevitable negativity, but I really don't get why people think this ruins anything.

The manga has spent almost 400 chapter at this point of deconstructing hero society, the Symbol of Peace and I think some things should be abundantly clear by now:

A strong quirk doesn't make a true hero (Bakugou's, Endeavor's arcs)

Saving someone is about reaching their hearts in time, not about beating them down

Quirks and personalities are connected, but the quirk is not the same as the individual (Shouto's arc)

You don't need a quirk to be someone's hero (every person who left little Tenko to wander the streets alone)

Skill, training, tech can all elevate a person beyond the strength of their quirks (Best Jeanist, Hawks' fight after he lost his wings, Hatsume matching the hero kids in the SF with tech, Detrenat, Knuckleduster in Vigilante, etc)

It was inevitable that we'd come back to this question:

When All Might said in Chapter 1 that you need a quirk to be a hero, he was saying that bc at the time he truly believed that everything he was, was due to OFA.

He spent the entire time after losing OFA being "lost and wandering" (just like Shoto, btw) trying to figure out his own place. By trying to teach Deku, by becoming a better teacher to all the students he tried to find a sense of purpose, but basically he lost the ability to see himself as a hero. That's why he pulled back, offered no leadership even after the war, as things were completely falling apart.

It took watching Deku spiral as he tried to shoulder everything by himself and seeing Class A offering support to him that All Might started to doubt the path he was on. Because, seriously - Ojirou, a martial artist with a tail - Shoji - a guy with some extra arms - Mineta - with his sticky balls - all believe that they CAN support Deku, can be part of his fight.

While All Might, with his 4 decades of fighting experience, a huge amount of wealth, access to the world's best tech through personal connections can offer nothing?

It took talking with Stain to realize that there is an entire spectrum of doing nothing and doing everything by himself. And the ideal point is to do what he can.

All Might stepping up has been on the cards since then. We knew he was planning something.

Of course, All Might has earned his retirement. He could be just a living relic of a glorious era. Obviously, even with tech, he's not going to have the godlike powers he did before.

But right now, the end is in sight. Everything is falling apart. He just sent two 16 year olds to run into the core of a ticking nuke on the blind faith they'll be able to do something about it, because it is the ONLY chance. One of his students had his heart explode. There are no heroes left.

All Might KNOWS, he knows better than anyone how dangerous prime!AFO is. But he also knows his personality, his buttons to push. He doesn't have to win, he just needs to delay, and he has a good hunch that AFO won't be able to ignore him. Whatever minutes, seconds he can buy can mean the difference between life or death, victory or defeat. So of course, he will try. Because that's who he is.

Remember - Deku in chapter 1 running into danger with a backpack got OFA because he reminded Toshinori of himself. Quirkless Deku stepping up, acting heroic despite his lack of power made All Might RECOGNIZE himself. Losing OFA never meant he lost his hero heart or instincts - he just lost faith in himself, because he bought into the hero society rhetoric. The scale of what he could do changed, but his heroism didn't.

So that leads us to the last question - is there a place and need for heroes who are less than superman. If there is a Symbol who has the power to solve any crisis by himself, do you even need the lesser ones?

And I think the story has affirmed again and again that yes, people with little power can make a huge difference and heroism comes in many shapes and forms. Also, that no matter how powerful, nobody can get there alone. Everyone needs support. A strong net is more stable than a lone pillar. A person's value or ability to change things is not tied to their quirks.

All Might stepping up is the culmination of everything he learnt and is totally in character for him. Moreover, it's the natural narrative endpoint of everything that the series has been talking about.

He can't win, he'll probably needs someone to save his ass (maybe Stain, maybe Bakugou, possibly both), but he'll also tick away precious seconds from AFO's rewind time and make a difference.

And this is why I also expect Deku saving Shigaraki not be just beating him up with more OFA, but Deku being Izuku should be the decisive factor in it. And also, I personally think Deku losing OFA but learning that he can be a hero without it would be a good writing choice and a good endgame.

HK already drew Deku's quirks as support items - so I think it's not a stretch that he could be a tech-based hero.

As someone who is a huge fan of tech-based heroes operating in the world of super-powers, it is my favourite endgame for Deku.

I've decided to do the thing where I put a poll up of my wips and write however many sentences that wip gets. BUT! These wips aren't even published yet. I like to put something up then come back to it later so I can at least take the pressure off myself. Because the pressure of getting a first chapter out makes it difficult to write.

Jult - Inspired by a conversation me and my sister had in a shoe store. We were wondering if Best Jeanist ever put a J at the front of words (ex: Jhe Jaghetti jas jood) and if he owned jean themed items like a Jable and Jhair. Then I learned there was a jult around him and thought "hey, what if he had a Jult in canon universe?" which is what happened. Although, this one is a one-shot.

Snippet: The parents would leave the hospital as confident and reassured as new parents could be, doing their best to make sure their child grew up happy and healthy. His blond hair grew out and took on a shine along with his oddly long lashes, and his green eyes always sparkling, much like his mother’s. Yet, despite his healthy look and appetite, there was something worrying about him. 

He only liked denim. 

Shigaraki - Frankenstein AU! Where AFO brings Yoichi back to life, Frankenstein style. And what luck, Yoichi appears to have lost his memories, leaving him with the opportunity to create the perfect little brother. When Second and Third find out, they try and get his memories back. But there's something that all four of them don't know. That's. Not. Yoichi.

Snippet: It was not a dark day when Yoichi died. It was sunny and there was not a cloud in the sky, though they couldn’t tell as they ran through the sewers like frightened rats. Hearts pounding in their ears, terror palpable in the air. 

Ice King AU - The AU where everyone was born earlier into the Age of the Dawn of Quirks. Second and Third are brainwashed and work for AFO while Yoichi has become unrecognizable to everyone ever since putting on the quirked crown that gave him the ice powers. Meanwhile, Izuku and Katsuki are unaware of his tragic backstory and beat him up everytime he kidnaps a hero.

Snippet: At twelve years old, Izuku Midoriya should have been in middle school cutting open a dead frog. Instead, he was battling against a very large, very alive frog with acid spit. 

Pokemon AU - Instead of quirks, they get pokemon. Izuku is still bullied for having an eevee that can't evolve. AFO and Garaki do all sorts of unethical experiments on pokemon. And it's really annoying how I can't type an accented "e" on my computer for some reason.

Snippet: Izuku Midoriya was 9 years old when he learned that not all Pokémon were treated equally. 

Death Tree - Are you in the market for a fic with lesbian duoholders? Another Victorian era AU, but this time Yoichi and Second are both girls. I thought about how easily AFO's possessiveness over Yoichi would translate over to the attitudes toward women. He'd still have to disguise how deep it goes, but even if he slips up every once in a while, no one would suspect anything. The actual plot is Yone falls in love with the daughter of the stable manager, and they eventually start a secret relationship. She also makes some friends in the small town that she lives near and is pretty happy. Then her friends start dying. Looks like they're going to regret not paying more attention to AFOs behavior.

Snippet: Yone was thirteen years old the first time she met the girl. Her wild hair was a flame in the summer sun, freckles scattered across her cheeks in a way that was reminiscent of the stars in the sky and calculating ruby eyes. She couldn’t help her staring, not used to seeing someone display such blemishes so freely.

Project Update/Survey of Interest: The AFO Retcon Essay

Having cleared out the inbox, I thought I'd let everyone know where I am on one of the big projects I've been alluding to for a long while now, the big meta post/essay arguing that the possession plot (and therefore AFO as primary endgame villain) is, in so many words, a big stupid retcon. That essay is - for reasons I'll get into shortly - on the brink of a major change in focus, so I'd also like to gauge how much interest people have in its potential new form. Because it would be another huge one, make no mistake.

So, I recently started dabbling with a new word processor program and thought I'd try learning the ropes with the retcon essay; I then spent the better part of two weeks combing through chatlogs and my blog archive trying to compile all the evidence I'd want to consider to make that argument. Two nights ago, I looked at the list I had - almost fifty bullet points! - and had the horribly demoralizing realization that...

...You guys, I just don't think I believe it anymore.

Now, that's not to say I've come around on the possession plot, because I definitely haven't! Rather, my trust in Horikoshi as a writer has been so badly eroded by the state of the writing in the endgame that I no longer think even the earlier material is reliable evidence for where the story was going.

To pick the most prominent example, I always regarded AFO telling Best Jeanist at Kamino that his quirk "wouldn't suit Tomura" as one of my strongest pieces of evidence that the possession plot had not been in the cards at that time. After all, who in hell cares what quirks would or would not suit Tomura if AFO's plan, as stated in Chapter 380, was that he would wholly subsume Tomura's will?

Now, however - and Chapter 380 is a big part of this, too! - I look back on that moment and just think, wearily, "Was that ever true, or was Horikoshi just lying to us already, and the only difference between then and now is that back then the lies could hold for hundreds of chapters, whereas now they're revealed within a matter of pages?"

A chat friend letting me vent suggested that perhaps the line was just intended to foreshadow Shigaraki getting All For One (and therefore all the quirks held within it) and Horikoshi just didn't think through all the implications AFO's phrasing had on how that plot was going to go. That may be true, and it's a more generous read than I could muster at the time, but the end result is the same: If I can't trust that the writing was ever an accurate reflection of the characters and their intentions, I can't in good faith construct an argument relying on that writing.

What I think I can do, however, if people are interested, is broaden the overall thrust to something much bigger than just AFO.

I'm currently toying with the idea of a treatise-in-four-parts about the problems in the endgame. Each part would cover one major branch of related issues - they might need to be broken down into sub-parts themselves, if they run long enough! The whole thing would likely be much longer and more involved than my chapter posts; think something more like the PLF mass arrest essay. Following are my current ideas for how those four parts would fall out, as well as some example talking points for each:

Part 1: Shigaraki and the PLF. Would cover Shigaraki as a villain and what he and the forces he'd amassed circa the end of My Villain Academia stood to bring to the endgame, both ideologically and tactically. Would also cover where they actually wound up and some considerations as to why.           Example Subpoints: Demanding accountability from Hero Society rather than just focusing blame on singular evils; Shigaraki as representative of all previous Villains; the MLA's shift in portrayal between MVA and the endgame; the ludicrous string of nerfs Toga was subjected to; whether the MLA was only ever intended to be a mass of numbers to whittle down the equally massive numbers of the Heroes or whether they were reduced to that after poor reader reception.

Part 2: All For One's Impact. Would focus on the sharp drop in moral complexity AFO both suffered himself compared to his pre-Tartarus characterization and inflicted on the endgame both himself and with the caliber of minions he brought to the story.           Example Subpoints: AFO's inconsistent characterization; the moral reductiveness of the Demon Lord as endgame Villain; AFO and Yoichi's personal history; Vestige mechanics; the impact of AFO's inconsistency on Ujiko's portrayal; the Sekoto Peak Problem; the characterization and handling of the Tartarus escapees.

Part 3: Team Hero Is The Fucking Worst. Would focus on the multitudinous problems with the presentation and methodologies of the Heroes in the endgame. Might be two parts if it gets long enough that I decide to split it up into, like, one part on the adults/Pro Heroes and one on the kids or something.           Example Subpoints: The story's bad faith attempts to portray agents of government authority as scrappy, determined underdogs; why it's impossible to believe that the current heroic cast will be able to enact a satisfying resolution to all the structural problems the story has raised; That Stupid Fucking Mech Fight; the constant refusal to let consequences stick to the Heroes; the way the story both undercuts and oversells Deku as a protagonist, and the impact that has on the broader narrative; One For All and more Vestige Mechanics; The Problem of Hawks; the hospital riot; the Todoroki family's inaction.

Part 4: Other Issues. A catch-all area for anything else I trip over that doesn't fit in any of the categories above, or problems of a more meta-narrative sort.           Very Preliminary Example Subpoints: The lazy portrayal of civilian characters; meta-narrative examples of the unreliability of BNHA's late-stage writing, from simple errors overlooked in the highly demanding grind of Shonen Jump serialization to the much more damning abuse of the reader's expectations of the comic medium; idk probably lots of other stuff, I Have Many Problems.

That said, I now have to ask, how interested are you all in a project like that? A fair amount of it would be recycled from my chapter posts, but obviously it would cover stuff I never got to in those, and would be able to be written with more hindsight (especially if it's written mostly or entirely after the series ends!), as opposed to the constant problem of reacting to the story week-to-week.

I basically stopped writing the chapter posts for reasons of incessant negativity, and obviously, this would be more of that, but I mind the negativity a lot less when it's A) able to be more comprehensive and focused than meandering and piecemeal and B) in the form of a large project I can work on as I have the energy for it rather than a brand new project every single week. And, as I trust stuff like MVA In Memoriam and On Heteromorphobia make clear, I do like the idea of putting together a good, comprehensive, easy-to-reference tract on all those problems, as opposed to just letting my issues remain scattered across multiple years of chapter thoughts and bnha critical tags!

That said, it's a big project, and I do vent about these issues pretty constantly with chat and irl friends, so if there's not much interest from followers here, I would not find it hard to just let the whole thing go and turn my eyes to less intimidating fare instead.

(Current other projects include the usual roster of BNHA fic, another mid-length meta piece in the mode of the BNHA vs. Helck comparison from a while back, this time on Mamoru Hosoda's Belle, and a horrible temptation to try and write something thoughtful and even-handed about demons in Frieren: Beyond Journey's End to combat the reductive-ass takes on both sides of the argument I've been seeing all over the internet since its anime started. Also, every week I go without seeing a single damn MachtxGluck fanfic on AO3 is a week I get closer to trying to figure out a way into writing it myself.)

Random BNHA Analysis (Again)

Hiii, so since yesterday I went on a whole 30 min long analysis after my first post. So today I'm going to be ranting about....buhbumdadaaaa

Katsuki Bakugo's Mentality! 🤯

From the beginning his brain is warped into thinking he's the best. Those with Quirks on top, Quirkless the bottom.

Him? He's above them all.

He was taught that from the beginning.

"Your Quirk is so amazing."

"Your Quirk is the best."

Constantly getting those statements before you can even explore the world with this Quirk... Leads to a type of brainwashing.

So now as a child he has a superiority complex, due to society.

But then there's someone who breaks this molded ideal.

Izuku.

See, Bakugo is taught that people without Quirks are less than. Yet this little boy is brave and saves people despite not possessing one.

This makes Bakugo get angry because he contradicts what he's been taught, yet deep down he admires him for it.

In his mind he feels like he has to remind Izuku of his place. "I'm just helping you, maybe you got lost, this is where you're supposed to be. That's what I learned."

Izuku never stayed in that place, he always hoped for more. And when someone is brainwashed, it really ticks them off if someone breaks the mold they learned.

And when Izuku actually had the guts to stand up to him, it was past just the hopefulness. It probably scared him a little. "That's not what you're supposed to do!"

When you're brainwashed, something contradicting what you've been taught can be scary. Because then it makes you question what's really true.

I feel like the icing on the cake was the Hero versus Villains lesson.

First, the one who he thought was weaker than him stood a chance against him and WON.

This contradicts that people without Quirks are weak, especially considering Izuku had one now.

So in his mind, he probably thought he was tricking him. And if anything, mentally reassured him and disappointed him.

Assurance because, "Okay, now you're not contradicting what I've been taught."

But deep down, "I admired you because you didn't have a Quirk and did what you did, but you have one you've been hiding the whole time?"

Then also because of his superiority complex, "How dare you think you can trick me? You think you're better than me?"

But all this time something else has been building, and it cements itself in his brain when he sees Shoto's skill.

Bakugo gets a reality check when he sees that someone is stronger than him. And it scares him.

It's the start of his inferiority complex.

So now he starts to feel inferior, and tries to find ways to still prove to himself that he's the best.

The Sports Fest was about proving to himself that he was still good enough, not everyone else.

But when his win wasn't because he actually won, but because Shoto fell unconscious... He wasn't assured. If anything, it made his inferiority complex worse.

Then comes his internship. He was chosen because Best Jeanist wanted his personality to be corrected, his appearance.

Usually people fawned over his Quirk, but B.J. kind of brushed it aside.

"Yeah, you're Quirk's good. You know how to use it, but your personality sucks."

And this made him defensive, cause time and time again he'd been getting comments about his personality. And this is another contradiction, because he'd been raised this way. This is his normal. But there are people telling him it was wrong. Which makes him question things.

He also gets upset because he felt like he didn't learn anything to help his Quirk grow...

Not even realizing how much this would help him later. Which is why Jeanist became special to him after, too.

But back to that later.

Exams.

That also made his inferiority complex worse. It wasn't an easy win and he had to count on Izuku of all people.

This made him feel inferior to even him.

He was relentless and didn't want to give up because he didn't want to let himself down and feel like he's less than.

But he fell unconscious and needed Izuku to help him win.

I feel like because of that, he didn't want to be seen by anybody. So he avoided the class shopping trip.

Then I Island happened, again, he felt like he got to prove himself a little.

And after, camp.

The kidnapping.

Which was a lot more traumatizing to him than he let on.

His inferiority complex really hit him in the chest when he was the only one who got kidnapped. (After people already recognized him everywhere for the Sludge Villain incident where he was helpless ((which was also more traumatizing than he let on)).)

The only one people thought would go to the villain side.

And All Might stepping down from number one after saving him.

He was probably already beginning to blame himself, but what cemented the feeling, I think, was his mother's words.

"It's your fault. All this trouble is your fault."

Because that's what he says to Izuku when he confesses how he feels.

"It's my fault."

He sits in the blame he feels like everyone has on him.

Then once it's confirmed that Izuku gained the Quirk from All Might, his admiration is back.

And slowly, in this time, he realizes what Best Jeanist's point was.

Not everything is about Quirks, he needs to work on who he is.

So he starts working on his personality slowly outside the spotlight in season 4 (anime). Then it shows in Season 5 (anime) when he works with his team much better than before.

Season 6 (anime) he finally apologized to Izuku, which he had to grow past his pride to do.

And as time went by throughout the series, he desired to be Izuku's friend, like it should have been. He just had to learn to jump over the wall society put around the two of them. To learn that it was okay to be friends with someone Quirkless. To learn that there was more to people than their Quirks to define them and what they'll do.

He had to break from the mold.

And Izuku was a piece of that puzzle, as well as Eijiro, who opened him up to feeling equal with other people. Having people he could feel equal to. Having those he could appreciate even if they weren't at his level in terms of power. Someone real, who wasn't only his friend because of his Quirk. But really wanted to get to know HIM.

He's continuing to grow.

Just jumping in to save someone without thought? And Izuku at that? He wouldn't have done that months back.

If you think about it, his development has been the most teenager like.

But I think his pattern of development was different and made sense. He needed to learn how to focus on himself more than growing his already powerful Quirk because it was all that mattered to him.

And needed to learn how to love himself genuinely and love others.

Everyone else majorly needs to develop their Quirks, so outside of it being society's focus, that's where they need to grow the most.

Katsuki, on the other hand, is strong in what he can do with his Quirk. Just...not his identity outside of what he was told and molded to.

And how much he's grown so quickly shows that he probably already had a desire to, but didn't realize.

And even though he's fictional, as someone who loves to see people real or not grow...

I'm SO proud of him.

I can't wait to see how else he develops.

Can I request 3rd year UA student Bakugou meets 3rd year Shiketsu student Kirishima?

Oh, this was a fun idea! Took me a while to come up with a scenario for them to meet, but once I did the words flowed! I'm happy with how this one turned out, so hope you like it too!

-----It Starts on a Train-----

"Dynamight?"

Bakugou gritted his teeth, taking a deep, slow breath. It was too early in the morning to deal with either some excited brat who wanted his autograph or an angry parent who wanted to berate him for his…everything. He was already high-strung for his first day of his internship; he didn't need his train ride disturbed. 

Remembering Best Jeanist's words–you can't have another blow up in public; your hero career hasn't even started, and there's a difference between being the aloof hero who doesn't like to talk and the undesirable hero who curses out their fans–he bolstered himself to keep his cool and looked for the voice. 

It was immediately clear that the person staring at him was no civilian; he'd recognize the uniform of Shiketsu anywhere. The man had to be near seven feet tall, but his entire intimidating physique was softened by the bright grin on his face and the kind eyes currently focused on Bakugou. The bright red mane trailing down his back and the two matching hair horns poking through cut out holes in his hat gave away his identity. 

"Red Riot." 

Bizarrely, his acknowledgment immediately brought a blush across the other's face, and the behemoth seemed genuinely surprised. 

"You recognize me?"

Bakugou scoffed, relaxing a little now that it seemed like he wasn't going to be verbally accosted by some soccer mom. 

"Who wouldn't recognize you?" Bakugou asked, rolling his eyes. "Only an idiot wouldn't know Shiketsu's highest ranked third year."

The blush on the other's face deepened. "Well, Shiketsu's no U.A.," he mumbled, shrugging. "Not like I can compete with you."

Bakugou raised a brow. He'd seen enough of Red Riot's saves to know that what currently looked like soft skin could be instantly hardened beyond a diamond's strength if needed. He'd watched one particular save multiple times, a little in awe at the then second year Shiketsu student who managed to harden and hold a whole goddamn bank building up by himself for almost half an hour while other heroes helped civilians escape.

Red Riot had been on his radar for a long time. At first as competition, but later as someone Bakugou admittedly respected (which was a very short list).

"If we weren't on a fucking train, I'd howitser you right now to prove what an idiotic statement that was," Bakugou said blandly. He gestured to the seat beside him. "Quit hovering and take a seat."

Again, the other seemed shocked and perhaps embarrassed? But he still shifted to take the seat, curling in on himself like he didn't want to take up too much room, though it was a lost cause as his entire side pressed against Bakugou. 

"Sorry," he said. 

"The fuck you apologizing for?" Bakugou huffed. He eyed the man out of the corner of his eye. How was he so soft-hearted here when Bakugou had seen videos of him tearing into steel with his fingers during rescues?

"Didn't mean to get in your space."

"I invited you to, moron."

Inexplicably, the other laughed. "You know, you're exactly how I'd thought you'd be," he said. "Straightforward and no nonsense. Super manly."

"You're nothing like I expected you to be," Bakugou said.

He blinked. "I'm surprised you even thought of me at all," he admitted. "I'm not exactly flashy or–ow! What the hell?" He frowned, rubbing at the back of his head where Bakugou had lightly smacked him. 

"It's too early in the morning for me to listen to bullshit," Bakugou said. "Be self-deprecating with someone else. You're a top up-and-comer. Fucking own that shit." 

"Bit un-hero-like to hit someone you barely know, isn't it?" 

"You can take it," Bakugou said. "Besides, don't be a dumbass and maybe you won't get hit."

The other impossibly softened even more, staring at him with eyes Bakugou couldn't decipher. He relaxed the tension in his giant frame, allowing himself to press against Bakugou's arm without concern. Goosebumps erupted across the blond's flesh, and he held back a shiver. He wasn't cold.

"This is my usual route to Fat Gum's Agency, but I've never seen you on this train before. New work study?" 

"Internship with Mirko," Bakugou explained. "First day."

"Nice!" He offered, nodding. "That fits."

Bakugou sighed, relaxing back in his chair. 

"My real name is Kirishima Eijirou, by the way," the other offered after a moment. 

"Bakugou Katsuki," the blond returned. He glanced at the other, contemplative, before he pulled out his phone. "Put your number in," he ordered. 

Kirishima seemed surprised by his forthrightness but didn't argue, taking Bakugou's phone and typing in his number. A moment later, Kirishima's pocket made a small 'manly!' exclamation. Kirishima's face turned red when Bakugou smirked, but neither commented on it.

"Any reason I'm giving you my number?" Kirishima asked as he handed his phone back. 

"Easier to set up a spar sometime," Bakugou explained, watching a series of emotions cross Kirishima's transparent face. The man wore his heart on his sleeve. "And then afterwards we can go out to eat. Loser pays."

Kirishima stiffened, eyes suddenly heavy as they focused on Bakugou and Bakugou alone. Good, the blond thought. That's where they should be. 

"Like…a date?" Kirishima asked hesitantly. 

Bakugou smirked. "Heh. Maybe you're not as stupid as I thought, Red." 

Bakugou missed his stop and was thirty minutes late for the first time in his life. 

It was worth it.

Since Bakugo's back in the manga, I'm seeing more of the same old arguments about why Bakugo's actually a bad character/person/whatever circling the fandom, and I figured, since no one asked, I'd share my thoughts and maybe dispute some of the more frequent issues people have. Considering my username, I feel like it's basically my duty lmao.

To start with the one I hear most often:

1) Bakugo gets away with being an asshole and his attitude is terrible

Horikoshi spends a lot of time working through the fact that while Bakugo can genuinely be a huge dick, he "gets away" with his general loud-mouthed, crass, rude attitude because, for the most part, people don't take him seriously. Like, Horikoshi goes out of his way to show him openly being mocked (bus ride to the USJ facility, during his internship with Best Jeanist a bunch of kids taunt him, the whole remedial course program with the kids who think he's as threatening as a house fly, basically every pro hero he interacts with), but also has the other characters mostly disregard the things Bakugo says. Why? Because it's made clear, frequently and often, that he doesn't actually mean them. He'll tell Kaminari he'll kill him and not even move. There's no follow through, and he's often teased about it or ignored. At best, someone will express annoyance. The use of other characters as a tonal tell is a method of including us, the audience, in the joke. The joke being, in this case, that whatever Bakugo's saying is meant sarcastically/humorously. Like most things, it's all about context.

Additionally, did you think the scene with Bakugo's mom was supposed to just be funny? It also is meant to inform the audience about where Bakugo got his speaking habits from, and helps show that, to him, telling someone to go fuck themselves is just like. How you talk to people. Pretty sure he genuinely thinks shouting is how you show you're listening and engaged. Class 1A picks up very quickly that, while yes Bakugo has a temper, he's almost all bark and no bite, except for the occasions when he does actually lose it. Which leads me to another common complaint:

2) Bakugo experiences no real consequences

This is just... straight up not true. Just about every single time he acts like an actual asshole, Bakugo gets immediate and direct consequences that occur specifically because of his own actions.

Examples: Bakugo gets all uppity about having a powerful quirk and tells Midoriya to kill himself -> he nearly gets murdered like two hours later because he's unable to defend himself. He tries to attack Midoriya on their first day of school -> he loses their first real fight (in front of their childhood hero no less) and gets pretty solidly humiliated. He goes nuts at the sports festival -> he doesn't get many internship opportunities he gets kidnapped by a fucking terrorist group. He smacks Midoriya during their final exam and doesn't want to cooperate -> Midoriya Detroit smashes his face lol. He acts like a huge asshole at the licensing exam -> he doesn't get his hero license. Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

And if your argument is that those aren't "real" consequences or whatever, keep in mind that part of writing consequences for a character well means tailoring them to what that character cares about and finds important, which guess what—Horikoshi does. All the consequences Bakugo faces tie into his character growth, and deal with issues that he takes extremely seriously, namely his hero career. Equally—and I've mentioned this before—it is not in the spirit of the story to go full on Gone Girl fuck-up-your-life on characters who start off being less than stellar. Especially since Bakugo basically functions as the character version of a moral litmus test for the audience; if you can't bring yourself to believe that a schoolyard bully deserves a second chance, how can you ever believe that real villains, who have killed people and done other awful shit, could ever deserve a shot at redemption?

Moving on!

3) Bakugo is too OP/has too much plot armor

To some extent, I mean, yeah. That's a fair argument. Bakugo is a prodigy, that's a big part of his character, and his quirk doesn't have any specific downsides or limitations the end up hindering him more than in passing. However, I will point out that as the story goes on and we're introduced to more pro heroes, overpowered quirks with limited or no downsides become much more common, so it doesn't stick out as much. Besides, when creating a character who wants to be the best hero in the world, who you'd like to have even a fighting chance in a universe where almost everyone has super powers, he kind of needs to have a badass quirk. Also, considering All Might is the figure both Bakugo and Midoriya are trying to live up to... that is overpowered. And as we're seeing in the manga, Bakugo is starting to come up short in the rat race. So I think some of the OP arguments had greater merit back in the day, but I don't really feel like they hold much water anymore.

When it comes to the plot armor issue... I see people's points, and don't always disagree, but Bakugo is the deuteragonist of the story, and he's in a shonen manga. Like of course he's got plot armor. Most of the universe wouldn't even function if there wasn't a lot of plot armor, because many of the quirks we see are basically magic and the fight scenes require a heck of a lot of suspension of disbelief. In the real world Deku wouldn't even have arms anymore. So yeah, I get it, but also... you know. Chill.

Lastly:

4) Bakugo hasn't actually made up for his actions against Midoriya

This one kind of ties in with the consequences one and also the attitude one, in that a lot of people's arguments about this are frankly just unrealistic. Like what exactly do you want Bakugo to do that he hasn't already done? Change his personality entirely? Be publicly humiliated and experience horrific suffering? What is the purpose? Especially when Midoriya, the person Bakugo has most hurt, has never once expressed that he wants Bakugo to be less like himself. He just wants them to be closer. Yes he could yell less, but Midoriya likes being competitive with Bakugo, he likes having someone who pushes him and won't put up with bullshit. He doesn't actually want Bakugo to change who he is as a person.

Additionally, I think it's only fair to point out that Bakugo has done most of his growth largely unaided and by himself. That's incredibly impressive. Like he, a sixteen year old with an inferiority complex and anger issues, realizes he was out of line and has a fucked-up view of the world and his relationships, and spends a lot of time, energy, and care in basically overhauling his entire life philosophy. Again, pretty much completely by himself. He takes responsibility for his own actions, he goes out of his way to try and fix his mistakes, he apologizes to Midoriya (publicly, expressing the emotions and reasons behind his actions without excusing them, and without pressuring Midoriya to forgive him, allowing the ball to fall firmly in Midoriya's court), and works to support Midoriya in any way he can, including taking a fucking bullet (slash weird finger blade thingy) to the chest to protect him. Nobody forced Bakugo to do those things, he chose to because he genuinely wants to do and be better. At this point, sure he's still a loud-mouth little shit, but being a loud-mouth little shit was never the problem, and he's addressed the things that were problems.

Basically, the point I'm trying to make is that while it's absolutely fine to not like Bakugo—he'll never appeal to everyone, no character can—a lot of the issues people bring up with him are relatively unfounded or over-exaggerated. If you're someone who dislikes him, cool! Just try to find something less superficial to criticize him for.

free space for oc rambling. tell us more about your bone fashion designer (michi, right?) please

Michi!! So they started as a My Hero Academia OC but they have migrated into several AUs and other fandoms at this point.

Originally I wanted to make a character with what could easily be an OP quirk that they don't use in an OP way. Skeleton Animation works on all bone skeletons, even ones in living bodies, so very easily a big bad villain ability. However Michi only uses it on the dead, for personal reasons, and uses it mostly to create things to carry their stuff, make coffee, act as dress dummies/dress-up dolls, open doors, etc. Their real "villain" power is their attention to details especially in contracts. Manipulating business practices to create favorable outcomes for themself and their fashion design business, the typical white collar shady business practices. Basically, a shitty villain that's not worth the time of heroes to deal with. Or as I put in a few fics "a villain for the aesthetics."

They're an orphan, parents died in a car crash, and they were raised by their paternal grandfather Hamon. However because of Hamon's quirk, Spirit Summoning, Michi grew up knowing their parents. Hamon is head priest at a shinto shrine, where Michi grew up, with the family quirk line relating to death the place was known as "the spooky shrine". Michi was othered as a child and decided that they would be better than everyone else when they grew up.

I often pair them off with Tsunagu/Best Jeanist because the idea of two fashion icons who are both petty and dramatic is very entertaining to me. Also falls into the "villains and heroes are two sides of the same coin" thing. They both put forward a very specific public image that comes down completely around the other. They share history from being in the same first year class at UA, Michi was in heroics until second year when they transferred to business. Tsu was the first person who became friends with them. After graduation they both lean into the rival thing until Michi's redemption arc.

But because I love the dynamics of OCs with existing universes/fandoms ice brought Michi into several other fandoms and generic AUs. Sometimes I drag Tsu along, sometimes I leave him at home.

Common traits through all iterations:

Afro-Japanese (unless otherworldly fantasy au). Shinto. Raised by grandfather (shinto priest). Dramatic petty ho. Afab masc Nonbinary (there are a couple where they are transmasc). Usually some connection to the dead. A million walls to keep people from getting close because they become possessive over those they do like. Acts villainous but has very defined moral codes. The "Dating Catwoman" trope all day long. Does things for the aesthetics (and drama).

Fashion inspiration: Alexander McQueen, Balmain, Zuhair Murad, and general Burning Man vibes.

I love my fashion pseudo-villain.

I think Tsu is actually the most unhinged hero. Everyone sees him as this prim and proper hero who takes his image very seriously, and he IS, but he’s also just so CHAOTIC.

Seriously the man was in full nude during a fight In vigilantes because he had to use his own hero costume. And he wasn’t even EMBARRASSED. He has absolutely no shame, and I love him for it

Nah, for real, if that's when OFA transferred it makes sense when you think about it. When it began at Yoichi and 2nd, it was weak. By the time it reached Izuku, it was so strong that it needed not only a quirkless person to handle it, but DNA from the previous user to be consumed. Over time OFA, became stronger and adaptable to the point it's almost like a sentient being with the OFA Users inhabiting its core... I need to make this a separate post...

Prototype Kamui Woods Analysis 🪵

I was thinking about this prototype when i realized "oh google translate is a thing!" While obviously not perfect it gets the general point acrossed i think!

Im going to disect this into chunks starting with his overall appearance!

One thing that automatically stands out to me is how villainous and rugged he looks! Ngl if i saw him irl with this design I'd probably cry 😭💀. With that being said, the rugged/villainous looking designs were a prevalent part of his style pre bnha.

But besides the whole style change, kamui's final design is pretty similar to his old one with a few minor changes!

First off, his shoes almost seem similar to deku's in this sense that they both have a covering over their normal shoe. Deku's being some sort of metal that i don't remember and kamui's being wood. His new shoes kept the same shape pretty much but instead of a wood cover the whole shoe is wood!

He as no knee pads in this one! I didn't notice it untill writing this lol.

He has a lil hook on the back of his belt that i don't believe he has in his bnha design! Idk what it's for though.

The string of roses he has leaves on it here! Cute touch but i can see why hori removed them.

The arm band things here also seem more detailed than the finished designs. Again, cool detail but i can see why it didn't make the final cut.

The shoulder strap things almost look like bookbag straps to me lol. I find it interesting that when kamui was first introduced in the series he didn't have said straps but come the hero rankings he brings them back! With a better design thankfully lol.

Also the branches onthe back of the straps don't look natural and are much bulkier than in the final! This was a good change lol.

And finally, we have his long ass thick ass neck 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀. Even with all that neck he still can't hold his head up straight 💀. Kamui walked so best jeanist could run 🏃.

I lied the actual last thing is that in the text it mentions that the suit is black and not the navy blue we see today. Im not sure why he changed the color but if i had to guess it could be that it made his overall character design too dark? I think he should've stayed with the black bc it looks better to me personally. In the anime we actually get a sneek peek at what it could look like when it was showing everyone injured.

Honestly don't really understand what this is trying to say... i think it's something about his costume helping absorb energy? Idk if any one yall can read Japanese plese lemme know and translate this particular part for me 😭.

I thought this is pretty interesting since they're weeknesses that we don't see in the manga or anime (not yet atleast.) And they make sense too! I do have one particular question but I'll reserve it for later when it comes up in the text. Besides that i wonder if hori intended to keep these weeknesses but sonce we don't see him much we never got to see them? I hope he did bc the part of it where he can only control a certain amount of branches before he losses control sounds like hint lol.

Okay edge lord 💀. The wording in "i have never shown my face to anyone close to me" is kind interesting to me. From what im getting from this is that he's worried about getting close to someone, than showing his face to them, then the person being scared off. Maybe not in this way directly but we've seen other mutant characters that have, or have had a similar problem. (Shoji and gang orca are the ones who pop into my mind.)

When i looked this word up it kinda surprised me; i thought I've looked up the wrong word. But thinking about it, it does kinda fit. In the text it talks about his appearance being ostentatious which among the early cast i think it does! But i think it can also alludes to his personality a bit. In his first appearance in the show mt. Lady steals his spot light and he seems pretty upset about it. Then in bnha smash (which ik isn't canon but hey) i think deku asks for a autograph or something from kamui, death arms, mt. Lady and they all had tears streaming down their face bc of it. But for kamui in particular i can see being a result/form of "attracting admiration." Though, i could be reading this all wrong so feel free to put ur own imput 💀👀. But with that said it does lead into the next chunk of text!

Man i really wanna know why she just left him there! I feel like the most obvious reason is that kamui is a heteromorph and the mom wasn't for it. I also feel that it's the most probable answer considering it was immediately after birth. I would also like to point out that from the time he was dropped off till the time he was found he was able to survive completely on his own! That's pretty damn impressive especially considering how dependent human babies are on their parents. Due to his wooden skin though it probably provided good camouflage. Also ik he has to have some serious social skill problems 😭. Or atleast behind average lol.

Idk exactly what this means but it seems important and most likely a reference to the previous text.

So im assuming this means that kamui can eat normal food and photosynthesize. The question i was talking about earlier is if kamui goes without sunlight but eats nutritious food would his quirk still "wilt?"

So nishiya isn't is original last name. I mean, it's to be expected since his bio mom abandoned him. So W the nishiya family 🙏. Also his reason for being a hero is 🤎🤎🤎.

One thing i did notice that may just be the translation is that the text switches between he, i, and it. He and i are normal but the it is weird.

why hawks is the worst character in MHA - an essay :)

Good morning folks! I am absolutely over hawks ngl. lmao. I hand wrote this beautiful essay a while back and thought i'd post it here, so please enjoy my hawks slander!

WARNING!

There are a lot of major spoilers for the manga in here, so if you are not caught up, don't read if you don't want any spoilers.

Alright, let's get this going lol

Hawks, or Keigo Takami as some of you may know him is SO OVERRATED FOR THE ABSOLUTE TRASHBAG HE IS!!!

Hawks, the #2 hero in Japan, Tokoyami's (really bad, might I add) mentor, a spy for the heroes, blah, blah, blah. He may sound like an okay character and I will admit that at first, he was very interesting. A character who is meant to be a spy and practically join the villains sounds AWESOME! But to call Hawks a hero, especially a highly ranked hero only makes what he does 10x worse.

I want to start off simply with his introduction. Hawks is introduced as a cocky young dude who wants heroes to relax. He is shown as a very talented hero who can do a lot of things in one sitting. Not bad, right? You're probably asking at this point why I don't like him. Well, I promise, it gets worse.

After being introduced as this amazing hero, he is shown as a spy who is getting info on the League of Villains and the Meta Liberation Army. He does his job by working with Dabi and "spreading the name of the MLA" by giving Endeavor (the #1 hero) an annotated copy of an MLA book with secret codes to get Endeavor to help stop the MLA and LoV. Not too bad, of course it's not, it sounds good. But just you wait.

While spying on the LoV, Hawks needed to gain Dabi's trust. How does he do this? By killing a hero, of course! Does Hawks kill a hero? No. But he takes the practically lifeless body of a recovering Best Jeanist (the #3 hero) and stuffing it in a bag to show Dabi. This obviously isn't great, but he was doing what he had to do for his country or whatever, so I'll let it slide.

But this.

THIS IS WHAT BOILS MY BLOOD ABOUT THIS MAN!

But first, I want to mention a very important rule for all heroes: you cannot kill anyone unless absolutely necessary!

So, on that note, I want to talk about Twice, or Jin Bubaigawara.

Jin is a member of the LoV, but I have never once associated this man with villainy. Ever. And here's why:

1.) He never kills anyone in the entire series

2.) He loves everyone he works with and is willing to do anything for them

3.) He does nothing but try to find his true self throughout the entire series and even ends up doing it

Jin and Hawks end up becoming friends when Hawks joins the league. They talk about some super deep stuff and Jin easily trusts Hawks.

In the war arc, as Tomura is busy fighting heroes and all the other villains are trying to help Tomura, Jin and Hawks are left alone. Hawks asks Jin to join the heroes as he believes that Jin has a lot of potential. Jin, after thinking for a moment, refuses. He sees the LoV as family and wants to be there for them. After this refusal, Hawks asks for a fight, which Jin also refuses. Jin didn't want to hurt a friend. Hawks didn't want to deal with anymore refusals and villains though, so he grabbed one of his feathers and KILLED JIN!! LIKE BRO WHAT?!?!?!

After that, Dabi finds his dead friend and burns Hawks' wings off. Well deserved if you ask me.

And if that wasn't bad enough, after Hawks recovers, he is still considered an amazing hero and is allowed to help with the villain situation after the war arc.

Hawks killed an innocent man for NO REASON and still got praised for it. I think he is an awful man and anyone who simps for him should... stop simping, simply.

He doesn't deserve to be a hero, let alone the #2 hero.

RIP Jin. And I'll attack Hawks even if it is only through words.

Just random headcanons I have of how the Pro Heroes would be if they kinda got very very drunk. Yes I had so much fun writing this, yes I love all of them

When drunk, Toshinori tries show off. You had to hit him a couple of times when he almost revealed his identity to strangers, not to mention the time when he refused to turn back from his All Might form for a good 30 minutes. He isn't a big drinker, but once he was really drunk and looked at you serious in the eyes, before "revealing" you his true identity. Of course, you had to swear to a very drunk Toshi that you wouldn't tell anybody.

Ok, listen. I love Aizawa with every fibre of my body, but you can't look at him and deny he gets rude af when drunk. Like, he just looks like someone who gets drunk, insults everyone and goes to bed. He knows it goes like that every single time, so he avoids getting too drunk if he isn't with people he deeply trusts, as he would never insult a stranger (or even worst, a student) by mistake.

When drunk, Hizashi just laughs. At everything. You look at him, he laughs. Somebody says hi, he laughs. Don't even get me started if somebody tells him a joke or if a passerby trips and falls, this man will laugh his ass of the chair he's sitting in until the alcohol wears off. You just hope he doesn't activate is quirk by mistake.

Drunk Enji is sooo competitive. This mf (affectionate) will challenge you to board games, videogames, races, everything as long as he's challenging you at something. And he'll cheat, from stealing your monopoly money and making up new rules to using his quirk to run faster. He won't remember anything once morning rises, asking you to tell him exactly what happened.

Nobody has ever seen Best Jeanist get drunk??? I guess he just holds himself back on drinks, either that or he has a very high tolerance. He's the one who babysits his drunk friends and restrains them before they embarass themselves. You helped him a couple of times, but he's so used to it he doesn't really require any help. He'll prefer for you to enjoy your evening chatting with others, while he ensures everyone makes it back home

Keigo becomes so damn horny flirty when drunk. Like, doesn't matter who you are, if you happen to be anywhere near him you are going to get hit on. And oh, it can be so embarrassing. Sober Keigo is fluent in flirting, but he's easily overexcited when drunk and his idiot side comes out. Smooth compliments become plain out hilarious. He once told you he loved the way you smiled, then that you had nice teeth, then forgot what he was talking about, and asked the barman if he could recall it.

Am I adding No.13 again? Yes I am! I just love her so muchhhh <3 Anyway, when she starts to get tipsy her sense of balance stops existing. She just. Falls. If she gets drunk you might as well get her a chair and leave her there or pick her up if you can, cause she'll keep falling and falling, and she feels so sorry for that, you have no idea.

¿Why do you think the narrative treats endeavor as a good person deep down?

In my opinion If that were true then I don't think hori would made Endeavor go to AFO instead of going with Shouto and Touya,drawing Endeavor as a demonic shadow that destroyed his family and also looks like some sort of demon that's not even human in Dabi's backstory and have both Shouto and AFO saying how Endeavor is fleeing from his responsability.

I half agree with you in a way. I actually think Endeavor's characterisation is really contradictory throughout the manga.

A "complete monster" half the time and "just a flawed human" the other half. I think that's why the fandom is so divided about him. You either love him or hate him, there's no in between.

Warning: me rambling again sorry, possible spelling mistakes, me dunking on Hawks a little bit, excessive use of italics

As you said there's the parts where he's literally drawn to look like a demon which are mostly from Shouto and Touya's perspectives of their backstories.

But there's also parts like

The hospital scene where we see him crying

Him leaving food at Touya's shrine

Even comedic scenes like him constantly texting Shouto who's ignoring him

These are all scenes where we see him in a neutral/positive light.

In those scenes he's more the dad who's trying to reconnect with his children because he was absent during their childhood.

And If it were just that then I would love to see his redemption arc. But being an absent father is the least bad thing he did in this case.

When he's crying and saying he feels bad about what he did it feels hypocritical to me, but my understanding is that the scene is still trying to make us sympathise with him.

To me this reads as "the public is wrong to put that responsibility on Endeavor"

As if it isn't actually his responsibility to make the public feel safe not just as the current number one, but as a hero in general. Something which he failed to do.

The fact that people have lost faith in the hero system is first and foremost society's fault, but it only happened because Endeavor was exposed as the worst of what said hero system had to offer.

He represents the exact opposite of what a number one hero should be, so the public has every right to criticise him. He doesn't deserve his position and in my opinion he should have lost it right after the first war.

But instead we get this random doctor saying he's rooting for him. This line has no purpose. It's not there to show us there's still people willing to support Endeavor, because we're going to see that with actually relevant characters just a couple of chapters later.

Sure we get Natsuo and Rei basically telling him to stop whining because he's not the victim here but that doesn't change the fact that the scene of him crying is there to at the very least get us to pity him.

We get three panels of him apologising and wiping his tears. Plus a close up of him looking even more sad and pathetic and talking about how his heart can't handle the guilt he's feeling, while 4 of his victims are standing in the room listening to him.

Then Best abuse apologist Jeanist and Hawks Keigo victim blamer Takami walk in and declare they're going to provide their full support to Endeavor.

Because obviously that's the person who needs support the most right now am I right?!

The public giving him a chance to prove himself and Hawks immediately assuming that Enji must be different now and deciding to help him don't make sense to me. Because Enji only started changing a few months before this. He was still the "irredeemable monster" right up until Kamino basically. The public and Hawks don't know that either. Why couldn't Hawks just as easily assume the exact opposite? Why does the public give him the benefit of the doubt after what they just learned? Because he gave a speech in a fancy suit and bowed once?? We see one person criticising him heavily during the speech/broadcast but they are focusing on the wrong thing in my opinion.

The public is portrayed as asking Endeavor and the heroes in general to ignore the accusations and even lie and pretend said accusations aren't true, and focus on defeating the villains. That's not holding the heroes accountable for their actions, that's ignoring half of the problem.

So even if we see people being disappointed with Endeavor, it mostly has to do with his performance as a hero, and not the fact that he shouldn't be a hero in the first place. He gets criticised for the wrong reasons. So I don't count that as him getting a taste of karma. Dabi's dance had the potential to bring said karma, but in my opinion it didn't. Basically me being disappointed about how the story went.

And while yes, characters like AFO are calling him out on his hypocrisy (hate that I have to agree with that bastard!) but the way I see it, the narrative is still coddling him.

He is currently supposedly finally facing Touya, but Touya had to go there himself and force him to do that. But it's still framed as a good character development moment for him, even though he didn't actively make any decision.

Endeavor is a reaction type character when instead he should be an active character.

For his redemption to feel earned he needs to actively do things to make that happen. But instead he actually avoids making decisions until he's forced to. He says he wants to change but it looks more like he's waiting for the change to happen automatically somehow. His "redemption arc" starts with him trying to basically insert himself back into the family dynamic as if nothing ever happened and he hasn't been abusing and neglecting them for the past... more than a decade, until Natsuo calls him out on it. All of his development happens internally, we see his thought process in detail. The first active thing he does is making a new house for his family to live separately from him. Which is... fine, but throwing money at his problems isn't really a good solution

And he's currently only half being held accountable. Again he didn't lose his job over this somehow. The narrative focuses on how he's going to make it up to his family which he's not doing a good job at anyway, and there's no talk about how he really shouldn't have a position of power like the number one hero spot.

I'm not saying we shouldn't focus on his relationship with his family. Obviously the whole point of his character is that he focuses too little on his family and too much on heroics. But him still having his position as a hero after all of what happened seems wrong to me. There's two ways to fix this

He gets fired after the first war. The public demanding that a person like Endeavor shouldn't have a job as a hero makes more sense than them demanding he doubles down and focuses on being a hero. This decision is like chaining his character arc and dragging him backwards.

Or he quits being a hero at the end of the manga to focus on his family, which is what I'm hoping will happen. If he stays a hero at the end of the story I will consider this officially the most botched character arc I have ever witnessed ever! And that's saying something because Hawks exist!

The second option would make him a more active character like I said he should be, but at the end of the story that doesn't really matter.

Basically I just think it's inconsistent writing and Horikoshi deciding midway through the story that he wants to redeem him, because with his early characterisation it's obvious that this wasn't planned.

so, you stated you wanted someoned to discuss chapters, well I AM HERE to talk about 362( or any other cjapter you'd like)

Amazing! I love it! Where should we begin? I'll give you some initial thoughts but feel free to redirect.

From the start my focus was on Tamaki. Horikoshi did that well. Because at the end of 361, I started to fear that HE would be the one to die in 362. I don't know how or why but I feel like the readers were meant to FEEL death coming. And it did. Just not how we expected it. Not to say I wanted Tamaki to die, because I didn't, but I also didn't want THIS. Either way. When Shigaraki calls out, "USE YOUR HEADS!" We immediately see Bakugo respond. And we knew he would, right? Because he had started really observing and reading Shiggys moves and muttering like Izuku in 361. This is when my stomach began to sink. The focus of the chapter had changed. It was no longer about Tamaki and the big three but instead about Bakugo. Namely, about Bakugo and what he thought Izuku would do in this situation. As he re-approaches the battle he says that "Gotta win...right Izuku...?" This hesitation feels telling, but I'm not exactly sure what of. Is this referencing Izuku's unhealthy self sacrificial nature OR is this referencing his and Izuku's fight during their test battle with All Might where Izuku yelled at him for saying he'd "rather lose than work with Deku". Because those are definitely two very different paths to walk. Honestly I could get stuck here all day so I'll push on. Next we see the results of his channeling of Izuku's habits as he figures out the pattern in Shiggys moves. We also see that his explosions have taken a new shape. I actually got super super hung up on this IMMEDIATELY because to me they remind me of what Izuku and Bakugo looked like through "Search" the quirk that AFO took from Ragdoll. I'm specifically referencing when they were trying to lead AFO/Shiggy away from the city during the first battle of the war. I don't know why but I can't stop thinking about that. Of course what happens next is a narrator returns to explain what's happening with Bakugo and it is safe to assume that this is Izuku. He is the narrator of the story and it has rarely NOT been him. To me, this was not a good sign. Bakugo is having a quirk awakening, and the mood has shifted almost to reluctance. This is odd because Izuku is both obsessed with quirks and obsessed with Katsuki. And then... Bakugo takes back the narrative. It was at this moment that I was repeating "no, no, no, no!"

"So, Izuku...can I...still catch up to you?"

I felt like I had been punched in the gut. And with a light in his eyes that reflects his changed explosion....I don't even really know what to say about that without my soul shattering. So, this is where Shiggy/AFO (we aren't quite sure which is having this vision of Second) panics and connects the Second with Katsuki. Which I mean, we all wanted, but not like this! At this snap, we already see that "explosion" in Katsuki's eye dimming, AND THEN- *snap* welcome to vestige world. We all knew here right? He looks so stress free. The most stress free we have probably ever seen him. He uses his pretty face instead of his gremlin face the e n t i r e time! Especially when remembering [seemingly] the last time him and Izuku were happy and laughing together. Ugh. And then....and then everyones heart breaks as his bursts...freeze frame as the big three can do absolutely nothing to stop The Great Explosion Murder God Dynamight's death. As if we aren't suffering enough, we see that his last move put him almost on par with All Might from the beginning of the manga. We have his mom, thinking and speaking of him, as he dies. Jeanist on the brink, Monoma on the phone (sidenote: I haven't seen anyone talk about this but HE IS ON THE PHONE! Which means someone else- OUTSIDE OF THE PRESENT COMPANY- KNOW what is happening), Miriko trying her fucking best but not being fast enough, Mirio breaking and of course, to really drive it home, Aizawa losing one of his precious kids. We end on this tragically beautiful, double spread piece of him sprawled and bloody. With our only smidge of hope being that the light in his eye, dim yet not extinguished is still present.

Now. What do we want to address? 😭

Chapter 185

At the Billboard Chart, Hawks gives a speech and talks to Endeavor.

Page 1 ➼ Hawks is second place on the Hero Billboard Chart JP

Page 2 ➼ As the president of the HPSC speaks, Hawks' lips pull to the side in boredom and he restlessly wiggles his head from side to side, hands in pockets. Endeavor stands stoic beside him, full-flame.

'Psst!' Hawks whispers. 'How's it feel to be on top?'

Endeavor glares. Disappointed, Hawks mimes zipping his mouth shut.

Page 4 ➼ The top ten give speeches, and Hawks grimaces.

Page 5 ➼ Edgeshot gives his speech. He talks about how he doesn't do the job for reputation.

Hawks raises his eyebrows and makes a sarcastic OK sign. 'Who the heck do you think wants to hear that crap?' he cuts in loudly. (People like Stain, yeah?).

Page 6 ➼ At Hawks' words, there's silence. Miruko compliments Hawks. Hawks snatches the microphone out of the hands of the woman offering it to Edgeshot and faces Miruko.

'I just hate holding back how I feel.' He flaps his wings. 'Ahem...' he coughs, and begins his own speech.

'You wanna talk public support? Best Jeanist would be no. 1 if that was all that mattered, thanks to the boost he's gotten during his leave of absence. I'd be second, Edgeshot'd be third, Endeavor fourth, and so on. Public approval? Sure, it matters more than anything else now, but c'mon...'

Page 7 ➼ Hawks continues his speech. 'This isn't the time to dwell on the past. And you say that staying the course is the answer. Our symbol's gone.' With a flap of his wings, he rises above the stage floor, up to where the lights glare down from the roof. 'Today's a turning point, so what I don't wanna hear is a bunch of PR-friendly soundbites from the guys and gals below me. Try coming up with something actually heroic to say!'

Page 8 ➼ The narration describes Hawks as he looks down on the crowd. [Hawks... Age 22. A hero who broke into the top three last ranking. He started his own agency at just 18 and made it into the top ten of that year's second rankings. The world's first ever to make top ten as a teenager. That fast, that young. People say he does things a little too fast.] The crowd chatters, Rock Lock disapproves.

Page 9 ➼ 'That's all from me.' Hawks drops back to the ground. He hands Endeavor the mic with a 'you're next' and a serious smile.

Page 11 ➼ Hawks claps for Endeavor's speech.

Page 12 ➼ In a room marked with Endeavor's nameplate, Endeavor shakes Hawks by the jacket as though he could shake the sass out and demands an explanation for his behaviour. Hawks leans back with a wide grin.

'Yikes! Sorry for putting you on the spot there! Everyone was just rattling off the usual lines, so I thought we needed to shake things up.'

That leads Endeavor to assume Hawks was testing him, but he lets Hawks go free. 'No way!' Hawks refutes. 'More like assisting! It did the trick, right?'

Hawks brings a hand up to his visor and draws it down from his eyes.

'I wasn't a big fan of All Might. I never wanted to be like him. But even so, him stepping down came as a shock to me.'

Page 13 ➼ 'You'll never be idolised, not the way he was. Still... there's no denying that we seriously need a new leader these days. So thanks for the reassurance! You were cool up there!' Hawks beams at Endeavor.

Endeavor wonders if he's being mocked. He asks if Hawks wants to be the new leader, the new no 1.

'Do I look like the type to you?' Hawks laughs. 'I wish I was lower down. There's more freedom there! (Between 20th and 30th place).' Endeavor turns away. He tells Hawks he should apologize to the others.

Page 14 ➼ Hawks pops his visor back on and reaches out for Endeavor. 'Hang on, I'm just getting to the good part!' he says, but Endeavor yells at him to go away.

'I'm thinking we should team up.' Hawks says more seriously. 'Back in my neck of the woods, there've been some nasty sightings. I'm talking Nomu. Remember them?'

That gets Endeavor's attention.
