all this talk about liliana being iredeemable has got me thinking about how fandom instantly forgave essek for all he did

the way i got this ask right as i was talking to my friend about almost this exact topic (is that you, kea, or are we all just thinking it)

heres the thing, i get how someone at a superficial level could justify seperating essek from others like himself; hes had among the most screentime. but, and i say this as someone who adores essek, that's.... really the only true leg up he has on others manipulated by ludinus/others against the gods, and it's very easy to notice the discrepancy. i genuinely do not think his story is somehow more valid or compelling than any other in similar shoes; most of them have an extremely close connection to a main character or are one, and they all had or have a chance at hope, to me. i once saw a post that snarked at anyone who would dare to say essek was priveleged and that that's why folk liked him, but, in a way he is: he's a rich man who looks it and is defined in his first moments by his handsomeness. during campaign 2 people wanted astrid gone and assumed she was as villainous as trent when she was essek's exact mirror but on the empire side, just a woman, and "in the way" of shadowgast. when liliana (woman, technically disabled, implied lower class), bor'dor (extremely lower class, man of color), deanna (black woman), frida (played by a man of color, of an oppressed class), & even, i will assume in the future, devexian (ultimate representative of a lower worker class oppressed people), have extremely similar stories or frankly far more valid reasons to be cautious about a god than essek, they're seen as entirely villainous with no possible redeeming quality or point, and are treated with immense scorn. meanwhile when essek starts a war by ensuring his culture's religion cannot be whole, he can easily be accepted by the fanbase, who even lambast the dynasty for daring to have a religion; thus, by their own logic, they are fully agreeing with ludinus (i am well aware of the intricacies of how the dynasty fucks up but, put this into the broader context here compared to how vasselheim is treated).

which is another reason im excited for the aeor arc; it is easy to assume essek will be there, and it will be interesting to see how his extremely blunt, delightedly-smug distaste for godhood (especially the luxon, which, didnt kill aeor like the pantheon did and is innocent in that) is framed in c3's context, and how fans respond to that. will it be entirely glossed over as people seemed to gloss over keyleth's distaste for them? will it be excused because it's cute when a man they see as a twink does it?

Been headcannoning Lars as a Londoner because this is the city where it’s socially unacceptable to exist in the direction of a stranger and I think that fits him very well.

So he’s going to DESPISE the Subway. I’ve heard from people that live there that people make a fair bit of noise on it and actually make eye contact and such, sometimes people even play music on there.

I cannot imagine anything more opposed to the London tubes. They literally ran an ad campaign when I was a kid that basically said “Do not play music without headphones in a crowded tube carriage because not everyone wants to listen to your shitty music, Ethan.” Making eye contact? Unheard of. Forbidden. If you don’t have a phone or a book or a friend to occupy yourself with, you stare at the ads or the floor. That’s just the rules.

I think the first time a stranger makes eye contact with Lars he’s going to feel like living up to the stereotype and stabbing someone.

I dunno, and I haven't read the Ascendency novels to be clear, so I can’t speak of who he was before his exile - but maybe Thrawn accepting Grand Admiral for that shitshow on Batonn sealed his fate. Maybe he wasn't the one to pull the trigger, maybe he was appalled by the needless death - he still took the promotion, even if he didn't want it. The moment he took the rank plate was the moment the blood on his hands became insignificant in the grand scheme of things. The moment where all his intentions begin to be buried by his actions.

Everyone is all about how Thrawn isn't that bad of a guy - and honestly I do agree that his character is misunderstood more often than not - but he still did terrible things with the Empire. Turned a blind eye and condoned much more with silence.

Because the fall of Nightswan and Batonn may not have been his fault - but he accepted the stain when he took his promotion.

For all you try to keep things fair, it doesn't matter if you're working in a system that is instituted to be cruel. And while Thrawn had never claimed to be a good man, and had only joined ultimately for the protection of his own people, there's something to be said of this deterioration of morality. How he doesn't understand politics, but is still shaped by the dangerous and vindictive workings of Imperial political scene, forgoing honesty for station.

Pirates and smugglers turn to insurgents and rebels. Capture turns to execute. He kills to prove a point.

He develops for the worse. For all he shapes the Imperial Navy, it shapes him all the same. I dunno. Complex character and all o that. He’s no scum of the earth true evil, but he’s no shining star either.

#my problem is that all of my insecurities are so thoroughly thought out you need a presentation with empirical evidence for me to even #consider believing you AND if I feel like you think that I was asking for a platitude or compliment or whatever then I CANNOT process it as #sincere bc then you’re just being nice because you’re a good person and my friend not bc it’s correct or like real #I don’t think love has to be earned but my brain thinks praise does #like love is unconditional but like I’m constantly weighing my own merits so praise needs to be for tangible reasons #also if you try to say anything nice to me right now it’s not gonna go well I’m in a terrible mood #this is like…. tbh art is like the fastest way for me to make something that then if people like it makes me feel good like art is such a #crux of my mental health like I don’t get much academic validation and like it’s not parental issues my parents are nice to me #I think it’s really a ME thing of me being very contemplative and critiquing in a thorough way #also all of my criticisms of myself are for things I actively knew better but didn’t do or like very rational things #it’s not oh my friends secretly hate me it’s that oh maybe my peers think I talk too much about things that aren’t always on topic in semina #seminar classes and yknow that’s probably true #or that oh I had a sloppy presentation for teaching and I’m always behind on grading which is true #but the extreme thing is how much I hate myself for that BUT it’s bc of the executive dysfunction that I am constantly mad at myself

Well DAMN you guys, I just watched the part where, on the cusp of being arrested and possibly killed for being Empire intruders, Caleb pulls the lost Beacon out of Jester’s haversack and with one fell swoop shifts the atmosphere in the room, the possible trajectory of the war, and the ENTIRE game’s storyline 180 degrees on its axis. What a MOMENT. what a MOVE.

i need weed. i need a medical card so bad or im gonna go out of my fuckign GOURD

#speak friend and enter #let me preface this by saying that im doing everything in my power to not let mental illness wipe its greasy hands on me #however. im insane in the membrane and i can feel myself slipping back into lunatic mode #i have to go for an mri next week and i genuinely don't know if i can do it. i am so fucking terrified you have no idea #i'll spare y'all the grisly details but i was chronically ill as a kid (and not just like sick a lot it was touch and go there for a bit)#and as a result of certain procedures i had to undergo to abate the aforementioned chronic illness #i developed ptsd that manifests as an irrational but obscenely debilitating fear of hospitals #like i can't go in a hospital without having a psychotic episode. like clinically i just can't do it #but as part of my yearly post-whatever care i have to get imaging done and this year that entails an mri and. im just scared #i spent a significant portion of my time immediately post ptsd symptom presentation believing that my doctors were trying to kill me #like for sport. like i thought there was some larger deep state esque plan in place to enact further medical barbarism upon me for giggles #and obviously you and i both know that's a delusion with no basis in reality but that doesn't mean i can stop myself from believing it.#it's like a word-of-god thing. i know logically that it's not true but there's a voice in my head screaming 'they want to flay you alive'#and i am currently between therapists and also unmedicated bc my last therapist was too focused on inner child work #to give me the prozac and weed card i really need #like that's great that you think healing my inner child will solve this but my inner child is covered in her own viscera. can we pivot mayb #but anyway for the moment im just wallowing in my own fear and im doubly scared bc im finding myself falling into rabbit holes again #like empirically the worst thing that's gonna happen as a result of this mri is that they're gonna say i have to have another surgery #and the technology has advanced to a point where its way less invasive than what ive had previously #but the constant dull roar of my thoughts about the whole deal is just. increasingly delusional nonsense #and not to be overly morbid or anything but i decided a long time ago that if i ever had to be admitted to the hospital again i would rathe #well you know. and i don't wanna die. honestly i don't. but the idea of wading through that particular brand of hell again is torture #and im not gonna kill myself. im not. ive been working on that impulse for a long time and i don't want to undo all of that work #but im scared and i dont wanna spend the rest of my life in n out of the hospital or as a substance-abusing recluse. is that so much to ask #i want to fix this. i do. i don't wanna live in a hole anymore as fantastic mr fox would say. but the horrors persist #and i often find myself increasingly unable to cope. hence why i need the weed #anyway i'll be fine. eventually. i hope. but in the meantime i do want to say i appreciate you all. i mean it #i tend to regard myself (fairly or otherwise) as difficult to get along with in real life so despite the fact that i don't talk w y'all muc #i do appreciate y'all being there and making me feel like more of a person than i feel like i am lately <3
