had to unfollow someone I really liked cause they support nuclear power and kept ragging on people who didn’t believe in it calling them ignorant and as bad as antivaxxers and it’s like man. I’m not dumb because I disagree with you. Radiation is fucking terrifying, and the idea that being scared of something that will proveably kill you in horrific ways is the same as being scared of proveably safe vaccines that save lives is a cruel mischaracterization.
#radiation is one of my biggest fears#and I’m absolutely anti nuclear power#because three mile island and chernobyl showed us that human error can always override machine safety#and fukishima showed us that even the safest machines can’t survive every natural disaster#like I don’t support fossil fuel power but jesus#like the bp spill was terrible coal accidents are terrible#but oil spills can be cleaned up. you can wash rocks and animals even if it takes a long time#and power plant accidents are tragic but the people that die are confined to the people that die in the immediate incident#nuclear power accidents? oh no it doesn’t work like that#wherever the radiation touches is contaminated#and the highly irradiated areas? unlivable within our lifetimes. within tens of thousands of our lifetimes#and the disaster isn’t just contained to the incident. yeah some people may die immediately from regular causes#some may die from radiation poisoning#but radiation causes cancer. there are people who survived these events who are dying from it now#because regardless of what they’ll tell you — THERE IS NO SAFE AMOUNT OF RADIATION#even the smallest amount WILL change your dna#the smaller amounts are more likely to change junk dna that doesn’t actually code for anything sure#but any amount has the possibility of changing dna that will lead to cancer#and you wouldn’t even know until 40 years later because that’s how long on average it takes the cancer to develop#and even then the disaster can STILL KILL PEOPLE even after the disaster is over!!!#there were russian soldiers in chernobyl who dug up the wrong dirt and got radiation poisoning#the reactor is concealed within two separate containment buildings but the disaster can STILL KILL PEOPLE#it’s not safe there and for all we know all of humanity could be dead before we’d be able to live there again#solar and wind have their problems sure but#nuclear just isn’t worth it because all you need is ONE fuckup for things to go wrong for so many people for so long

What Makes the Clean Room So Clean?
When you picture NASA’s most important creations, you probably think of a satellite, telescope, or maybe a rover. But what about the room they’re made in? Believe it or not, the room itself where these instruments are put together—a clean room—is pretty special. 
A clean room is a space that protects technology from contamination. This is especially important when sending very sensitive items into space that even small particles could interfere with.
There are two main categories of contamination that we have to keep away from our instruments. The first is particulate contamination, like dust. The second is molecular contamination, which is more like oil or grease. Both types affect a telescope’s image quality, as well as the time it takes to capture imagery. Having too many particles on our instruments is like looking through a dirty window. A clean room makes for clean science!

Our Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland has the largest clean room of its kind in the world. It’s as tall as an eight-story building and as wide as two basketball courts.
Goddard’s clean room has fewer than 3,000 micron-size particles per cubic meter of air. If you lined up all those tiny particles, they’d be no longer than a sesame seed. If those particles were the size of 16-inch (0.4-meter) inflatable beach balls, we’d find only 3,000 spread throughout the whole body of Mount Everest!

The clean room keeps out particles larger than five microns across, just seven percent of the width of an average human hair. It does this via special filters that remove around 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns and larger from incoming air. Six fans the size of school buses spin to keep air flowing and pressurize the room. Since the pressure inside is higher, the clean air keeps unclean air out when doors open.

In addition, anyone who enters must wear a “bunny suit” to keep their body particles away from the machinery. A bunny suit covers most of the person inside. Sometimes scientists have trouble recognizing each other while in the suits, but they do get to know each other’s mannerisms very well.

It takes a lot of specialists to run Goddard’s clean room. There are 10 people on the Contamination Control Technician Team, 30 people on the Clean Room Engineering Team to cover all Goddard missions, and another 10 people on the Facilities Team to monitor the clean room itself. They check on its temperature, humidity, and particle counts.

Besides the standard mopping and vacuuming, the team uses tools such as isopropyl alcohol, acetone, wipes, swabs, white light, and ultraviolet light. Plus, they have a particle monitor that uses a laser to measure air particle count and size.

One thing I wish more people understood is that a calorie is not a real thing, it's a unit of measure. Calories are just a measure of how much energy a human body can obtain from digesting a food.
I've seen people talk about calories as if they're a contaminent, like mercury in fish or something. As if "zero calories" is both healthy and humanly possible.
With the right lab equipment, you could separate out the fat, sugar, protien, fiber, vitamins, salt, etc. in a food and look at them, weigh them, measure them, poke them a stick. These are real things that actually exist. You can't separate out the calories. You find out how many calories are in a serving by doing math about how an average human digestive system processes the components of a food.
A "low calorie" food is just a food that you get less energy from. That's all it is. It isn't nessecarily healthier, it doesn't nessecarily have more nutrients. It certainly isn't more "pure" or "clean". It's just a less efficient fuel, that's all.
Vegetable oil and refined sugar are high calorie because our bodies can wring an absurd amount of energy from them. They're less healthy than other foods because they have fewer nutrients in them, not because they're "full of" evil calories.

This one poor youtuber I watch has to explain that her "healthy" foods are intensely calorie-rich because she physically cannot eat large volumes. She's got to be efficient. That doesn't make it a good approach for someone who wants the feeling of teeth crunching on a snack all day and night. Celery is ideal for the latter, but woe to the idiot who thinks eating mostly celery is going to make them healthy. You need fuel, people! Celery is an adult pacifier for people who can't stop clenching their jaw while they write. (It's me. I'm people.)

The Big Guide to Humans: Home Planet
Humans come from a small, rocky planet, called Terra or Earth or some other translation of "dirt," where they lived on the land surface despite the planet being mostly covered (area and volume) by water. They do, however, measure temperature in a scale based approximately on the freezing and boiling points of water (at their average atmospheric pressure), set to 0 and 100. As with "years" (see lifespan and development), your local human can probably tell you the conversion to local measurements, if the knowledge is not in your local storage and the numbers are not being converted automatically by your translation dock. The planet's rotational axis is tilted relative to its orbital plane, resulting in "seasons," a predictable progression of local temperatures between local lows to local highs and back over the course of an orbit, despite its nearly round trajectory. This is in addition to the smaller temperature changes of the day/night cycle. Terran weather temperatures range from -90, below the freezing point of radon, to 60, nearly the boiling point of bromine, though humans mostly live where the weather over the course of a year ranges between -20 to 45.
Humans infamously breathe oxygen, but Terra's atmosphere is actually mostly nitrogen. The 23% oxygen concentration is enough for fires to sustain easily, assuming fuel and initial ignition, but low enough that fires smother nearly immediately when fully covered. Terra's rotation and heat from Sol combine to cause a predictable pattern of convection known as prevailing winds. Winds are often strong enough to move light objects without causing damage, not uncommonly strong enough to make it difficult for humans to move against it, or stronger, and sometimes strong enough to cause damage to buildings. This is in addition to regional threats of "extreme" winds, most notably tornadoes (fast-moving, localized funnels of winds strong enough rip buildings apart and fling heavy objects) and cyclones (weaker than a tornado, but traveling slowly and raining so copiously that shelters are also damaged by water).
Having such copious rain that buildings are damaged can happen outside of a cyclone, as well. While humans can swim surprisingly well for a non-liquid-dwelling species, this water has usually picked up so many contaminants that it is capable of overwhelming a human's immune system if it enters their body via their mouth or damaged skin.
Alternately, little or no water may fall on an area that does not usually experience water scarcity. The resulting "drought" kills plants and animals that cannot be moved. This is less predictable, but takes multiple years to come into effect. A vegetated area facing drought, however, is at particular risk for a wild fire, a fire that becomes too large and fast-moving to be smothered. Areas as big as residential ships can burned before the fire runs out of fuel or is able to be drenched.
Terra's planetary surface is made up of several pieces of "crust" floating on top of its liquid center. At the edges of these pieces, or at cracks in the pieces, huge pieces of crust can be forced upward or buckle under the pressure. Done slowly, so slowly no one notices, this produces mountains. Done quickly, it produces "earth quakes." Some earth quakes can only be sensed by sensors, but others cause buildings to shake apart. Humans know where these edges are and, instead of not building there, they design buildings that are able to resist being shaken. If the locus of the shaking is near or under the ocean, it can cause a fast-moving, towering wave called a "tsunami." An average tsunami is capable of obliterating buildings when it reaches shore, and then sucking any survivors into the ocean when it recedes (with strength far past even the best human swimmers). As with earth quakes, humans design buildings to survive being struck by this wall of water. The same edges and cracks also produce volcanoes, places where the earth's liquid center oozes or bursts out of the ground. This liquid will be at temperatures of 700 or more, above the melting temperature of radium and on past the the melting temperature of gold. It can cause fires when it touches things in addition to being so heavy and/or voluminous that it covers items in its path. Humans generally do not build very close to volcanoes that are frequently or explosively active. However, if a volcano is only likely to erupt once or twice within a human lifespan, or tends to ooze rather than burst, they will simply use several sensors to know when it will happen so they can get out of the way. Because they all originate in the same geological source, it is common to have two of these crack-based issues at once and not unusual to have all three.
Sometimes, rain falls in tiny frozen pieces, covering the ground in a layer of ice chips. Sometimes it falls in large rocks of ice, breaking and shattering what it strikes. Sometimes the temperature is anomalously hot or cold in places where the wildlife and human dwellings are not adapted to those temperatures. Sometimes massive sparks of electricity shoot from the sky to the ground. Sometimes the side of a mountain — or the ice chips piled on the side of the mountain — will fall off and slide down, burying and crushing everything in the way. Sometimes erosion under the surface will cause the surface to give way, leaving a hole in the ground big enough to swallow a person or a building. Sometimes the liquid inside Terra doesn't burst through the surface, but super-heats water until it does. While none of these features are unique to Terra, even among inhabited planets, it is uncommon for an inhabited planet to have so many of these features and it is nearly unique among humans to choose to live in afflicted areas. It can be helpful to understand, when one is wondering why humans and other life from their planet are "like that," that life only evolved on Terra once* and then experienced a burst of population up to and beyond local carrying capacities. Every species, including the plants, shares a common ancestor, and every creature that was ever born (hatched, sprouted, divided, etc) faced immediate competition from other, similar creatures. The ability to run faster, eat weirder, live hardier, spread farther provided an immediate benefit. Furthermore, in addition to the horrors described in this chapter of this guide, in Terra's planetary history there are multiple near-extinction-level events — new chemosynthetic species producing upheavals in the atmospheric gas balance, an asteroid strike, massive volcanic eruptions choking the air with ash and blocking energy from Sol — that further pressed evolution. Terra, truly, has earned its reputation as a death world — but less so for the life that has formed there.
*there is a long-standing idea that cephalopods may have originated separately, but this is really only taken seriously by the Chiparsen, who used to colonize via panspermia. While the Unified Government no longer accepts this as a valid territorial claim, the Chiparsen still hope to prove relation in order to put forth a diplomatic demand that Terrans remove cephalopods from their diet.

I'm a big fan of having the Fentons opening up a portal to hell in their basement having some consequences that aren't just the ghosts coming through to mess with Amity Park.
Amity Park has to be drenched in ectoplasm by now. And mysterious ghostly substances can and should cause some side effects for both the town and its inhabitants.
Meaning: Danny is split half and half, both and neither, but he's not the only one toeing the line between ghost and human. he's just the most concentrated version of it.
Valarie and Jazz are first. The former has a full suit of ghost technology embedded into her body and the latter grew up in a house where safety protocols were enough of a joke that pure ectoplasm was stored in the fridge right next to dinner and it contaminated everything. Tucker and Sam are next: they were there when the Portal Incident happened and even though they weren't in the portal, they must have absorbed some of the backlash from it ripping a hole in space to the Infinite Realms, and they were further exposed from helping Danny fight ghosts.
everyone in the town is a little contaminated at the least. everyone is also a little more focused and obsessive than the average person. everyone's got a hobby or a craft or a couple causes that call to them. this goes unnoticed. Amity Park is just a passionate place, you know? Amity Park has some quirks– and the ghosts are 83 of them– but this is their town and they're not leaving for anything. It's the way of things, it's placing a live frog in cold water and slowly cranking the heat up to boiling. No one sees what they're becoming because the changes are so slow and they're affecting all of them. There's no outsider looking in alert people to how different their bodies, their priorities, their community are in comparison. It's a small town far enough away from anything important to be beneath notice. It's isolated enough that when change comes, no one recognizes it at their doorstep. It's small and unimportant enough that their neighboring towns, their state, and the rest of the nation call the ghosts attacking their town a hoax: a way to draw tourists in. (the claim to ghosts do not draw tourists in. the only "tourists" that go to Amity are the ones that have a wild spark in their eye and not much to lose. they end up staying more often than not.)
time + isolation = a new culture, or at least room for cultural shifts. The word "wish" is treated as taboo as the most vulgar curses. The parks bear an unusual amount of fruit (and who even planted those fruit trees? what even is this fruit?) are wild enough to count as small forests. Crows talk and old ladies think it charming. There's always live music going on somewhere, played by band kids and musicians that are... particularly strange. Some pets die and come back for dinner. The library has never before been hosting so many events, for groups of knitters, artists, hobby biologists, and college students showing off the powerpoints they made for fun. Every month a guy who really likes birds shows off his rescued parrots to starry-eyed kids. Seasonal decorations get... intense.
It's the way Amity Park is. The way it's always been, right?

Stanislaus led programs focused on the cleanup of contaminated hazardous waste sites, chemical plant safety, oil spill prevention and emergency response. In the first seven weeks of 2023 alone, there were more than 30 incidents recorded by the Coalition to Prevent Chemical Disasters, roughly one every day and a half. Last year the coalition recorded 188, up from 177 in 2021. The group has tallied more than 470 incidents since it started counting in April 2020. The incidents logged by the coalition range widely in severity but each involves the accidental release of chemicals deemed to pose potential threats to human and environmental health.

Like most things in life, Ellie's first response is to try and deal with it herself. So, it stands to reason that that initial reaction stays the same even when she's hurt.
On more than one occasion you've walked in on her stitching a bloody gash up herself with a dirty needle and some janky knotted thread.
Other times, you've seen her wrap up a scrape using ductape. Just ductape. No gauze. No fabric.
There's a reason Ellie doesn't help out at Jackson's infirmary after all. If she did, many people would get even more hurt by her contaminated ministrations than if they were just left alone.
See, because of Ellie's immunity she's developed a poor way of managing her own health and hygienic practices when wounded.
Her seeming to think that being immune to the undead infected makes her not susceptible to other things too, like human bodily infections.
Also, because she's immune she often charges into danger with less caution than the average, not immune person would.
Hence why, she gets more hurt. Being reckless with her life. Going in head first.
Because of the poor way Ellie patches herself up you've sort of become her own personal physician.
Even reading up on medical books in Jackson's library to better assist her.
And you being her nurse? Now she can't complain about that. Her always ready to make a joke about it.
"Hey, babe. Where's, uh, your sexy nurse costume?"
"Ellie, shut up. Tell me what's wrong. How badly hurt are you?"
"Yeah, I need some medical attention. I hurt myself pretty bad falling for you."
"Ellie, you're literally bleeding out onto the rug."
Being a bit touch starved (though she'd never admit it) she quite enjoys when you fuss over her and take care of her.
It reminds her that someone cares about her. That her life matters to the one she loves most of all.
Ellie may gripe whenever you tell her to rest and heal up (and she'll never agree to proper bedrest.)
She also may always downplay how hurt she is, cracking jokes and sugar coating gritty details as to how exactly she got so banged up.
Though she'll forever be grateful to you. For your gentle assistance and the soft, affirming words you say to her while cleaning her body up.
You sometimes catch her staring at you so intensely while you bandage her up.
Her green eyes piercing, unaffected by even the sting of the alcohol you rub into her raw wounds.
Ellie will still your treatment with a firm grip of her calloused hands and pull you close to her, fervent.
Crashing her lips against yours in a desperate attempt to make you understand how much you mean to her.
Hoping her eager mouth, parted and inviting, will make you feel her love beyond her lacking, stilted words.
You'll try to protest, your hands awkwardly searching to rest upon the parts of her body which aren't injured or bruised.
Ellie won't care.
Invading your mouth with her tongue and pulling your clothes up and aside to feel the warmth of your skin.
When overcome with need, the pang of a touched scrape or the press against a gash going completely unnoticed.
Ellie will bite your bottom lip and pull you beneath her. Her shirt already discarded from when you were cleaning the blood off her.
"E-Ellie, what about your injuries!?"
You'll squeak, her rough hands yanking your jeans down, slender pale digits finding purchase upon the flesh of your freshly bared thighs.
"I think this is more important, babygirl. Yeah?"
Ellie will rasp, sucking a no doubt vibrant mark along your neck.
What can she say? Whenever you play nurse for her it turns her on.
And though you worry about her wounds, it's not like you object for long.
Not when your beloved Ellie is alive and safe in your arms, cuts and all.

Danny Lokison
Danny is Loki’s bio kid.
In the end there may have been more to his bluish skin and icy powers than what he initially wrote off as weird half-dead mumbo jumbo.
As it stands.. his alien heritage may have had awakened in his death no longer blocked by multitude of enchantments and bled into his second form.
Meanwhile his alive part is still hidden behind its ‘human’ facade.
You could really excuse him for not jumping to the conclusion that he is an alien straight away after seeing the weird skin tone. He is not the first bluish ghost he seen after all
As it turns out not only ice and snow but mischief also ran in his blood-
Little disparities started to stick out to him after the realisation. Like how he always had more strength than an average kid should (contributing before that to his high ecto contamination thanks to his parents nonexistent lab safety standards) or how he always felt more comfortable in the cold and uncomfortable in the heath.
Dan’s eerie red eyes made much more sense with that as well.

Mike DeWine, the Ohio governor, recently lamented the toll taken on the residents of East Palestine after the toxic train derailment there, saying “no other community should have to go through this”.
But such accidents are happening with striking regularity. A Guardian analysis of data collected by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and by non-profit groups that track chemical accidents in the US shows that accidental releases – be they through train derailments, truck crashes, pipeline ruptures or industrial plant leaks and spills – are happening consistently across the country.
By one estimate these incidents are occurring, on average, every two days.

The incidents logged by the coalition range widely in severity but each involves the accidental release of chemicals deemed to pose potential threats to human and environmental health.
In September, for instance, nine people were hospitalized and 300 evacuated in California after a spill of caustic materials at a recycling facility. In October, officials ordered residents to shelter in place after an explosion and fire at a petrochemical plant in Louisiana. In November, more than 100 residents of Atchinson, Kansas, were treated for respiratory problems and schools were evacuated after an accident at a beverage manufacturing facility created a chemical cloud over the town.
Among multiple incidents in December, a large pipeline ruptured in rural northern Kansas, smothering the surrounding land and waterways in 588,000 gallons of diluted bitumen crude oil. Hundreds of workers are still trying to clean up the pipeline mess, at a cost pegged at around $488m.
The precise number of hazardous chemical incidents is hard to determine because the US has multiple agencies involved in response, but the EPA told the Guardian that over the past 10 years, the agency has “performed an average of 235 emergency response actions per year, including responses to discharges of hazardous chemicals or oil”. The agency said it employs roughly 250 people devoted to the EPA’s emergency response and removal program.

The EPA itself says that by several measurements, accidents at facilities are becoming worse: evacuations, sheltering and the average annual rate of people seeking medical treatment stemming from chemical accidents are on the rise. Total annual costs are approximately $477m, including costs related to injuries and deaths.
“Accidental releases remain a significant concern,” the EPA said.
In August, the EPA proposed several changes to the Risk Management Program (RMP) regulations that apply to plants dealing with hazardous chemicals. The rule changes reflect the recognition by EPA that many chemical facilities are located in areas that are vulnerable to the impacts of the climate crisis, including power outages, flooding, hurricanes and other weather events.
The proposed changes include enhanced emergency preparedness, increased public access to information about hazardous chemicals risks communities face and new accident prevention requirements.
The US Chamber of Commerce has pushed back on stronger regulations, arguing that most facilities operate safely, accidents are declining and that the facilities impacted by any rule changes are supplying “essential products and services that help drive our economy and provide jobs in our communities”. Other opponents to strengthening safety rules include the American Chemistry Council, American Forest & Paper Association, American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers and the American Petroleum Institute.
The changes are “unnecessary” and will not improve safety, according to the American Chemistry Council.
Many worker and community advocates, such as the International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace & Agricultural Implement Workers of America, (UAW), which represents roughly a million laborers, say the proposed rule changes don’t go far enough.

A small list of things I ( an American living paycheck to paycheck with copious amounts of loans) can do that the average Palestinian, Congolese, Sudanese, etc CANT do because of the long arm of colonialism and greed
1. Go to a store and have food stocked on shelves ready to purchase
2. Take a shower
3. Eat food of my choosing and even waste it if I want (I don’t)
4. Sleep in a home I know won’t be bombed by a racist regime
5. Hug my family members each day and tell them I love them without thinking it may be the last time I get to say it
6. Use my phone for things besides showing the destruction of my people and out homes
7. Cry and feel anger. Anger is a luxury. To feel angry that means you don’t have to feel sadness.
8. Drink clean water that hasn’t been contaminated with feces
9. Breath “clean” air (air not filled with smoke and rotting bodies)
10. Leave where I live and not be shot at by a sniper
The fact that some of the things on this list are so simple and easy and are basic human needs and ideals are heartbreaking. I can barely eat some days without think about the millions starving in these countries right now. The governments of this world need to burn. We deserve better than this evil. We deserve better than this hell we live in. We MUST come together and help. Freedom is contagious. Once people started talking about Palestine a spark was lit. Now more focus is on Yemen, Sudan, the conga, Myanmar, Nepal, Haiti, and too many other countries. We deserve freedom. And none of us will be free, whether it be freedom from capitalism, colonialism, white tears and fear, we will never be free until we are all free. Please if you don’t have the money to donate than at least pray, or simple speak with people on this topic. The world needs our help and I won’t fail her.

i've NEVER seen a single good faith discussions about pleather on this website and i want ppl to think critically for one second about the way businesses talk about their products. "vegan leather" is purely a marketing term and nothing else. it was invented by the fashion industry and it has nothing to do with vegans or veganism.
"vegan leather" is basically made of polyester (a type of plastic), but crucially a lot of clothes nowadays are made of polyester either fully or partially because it's cheaper to produce. so of course clothing companies are going to be producing and marketing things that make them more money.
these products are not even targeting vegans, they're making an average customer feel better about their purchases, same way they are now putting "eco" labels on some of their organic cotton clothing. it's just greenwashing. NOTHING in fast fashion is eco friendly in any way - this whole industry is extremely wasteful an exploitative on every level. when are ppl going to realize that these companies just say anything they can to make it seem like they care about anything other than their profit margins. because they don't.
my wish is that ppl that talk about how bad pleather is and how vegans are apparently responsible for all of the microplastic pollution in the world also talked or cared even a little bit about the absolutely horrific abuse and exploitation that happens in the clothing and fast fashion industry. talk about how this industry consistently fails (or outright refuses) to pay its workers a living wage or how they don't provide them humane working conditions - and how that led to thousands of garment workers dying and getting injured when a garment factory collapsed in Bangladesh (and that's not the only tragedy this industry is directly responsible for).
also microplastics are only the tip of the iceberg if you want to talk about the pollution that the clothing industry is responsible for (toxic chemicals and pesticides used in cotton production, garment dyes, the disposal of textile waste etc) - all of which has direct human costs tied to it.
but if your only concern ever was microplastics that clothes can shed then great! avoid all polyester and plastic clothing. but did you know textiles aren't even the primary microplastic contaminants? it's plastic bags, bottles and fishing nets by far. most ppl can't always avoid these plastic items in daily life. but do you eat fish? vegans don't.
i'm just so tired of the pleather discussion focusing on the wrong thing (vegans) when there are so many more aspects about the clothing industry and plastic pollution that never get addressed when they should. and the amount of misinformation on these topics is just laughable at this point. ppl sure enjoy reblogging posts that confirm their biases and free them from having to critically engage with complicated issues because it's so easy to just blame a group of ppl for it.
anyway if you're concerned about ethical clothing (i hope you are) then basically these are your best options:
wear what you already have and don't buy new clothes unless necessary
get second hand clothes
get upcycled clothes
this may seem a bit extreme but these are the only options that don't result in new clothes and textiles being produced because there is an overproduction issue in the clothing industry which is why over 80% of clothes end up in landfills. obviously these options aren't viable for everyone all the time but if the goal is sustainability then that's just the reality of things for now.
you can also do things like mend your clothes so they last longer, learn to sew to make your own clothes etc all of that is better than buying new clothes. donating clothes to a thrift store is also not ideal since they get so many donations that a lot of it ends up in a landfill anyway and recycling clothes is also not straightforward or even possible in a lot of cases. so not buying new/more clothes is the most environmentally friendly option. and before you go no ethical consumption under capitalism blah blah yeah we know. doesn't mean you are powerless and have no choices in anything ever.
please learn more about microplastics, the clothing/textile industry and veganism before you uncritically reblog another misinformed post about "vegan leather" or microplastics. also please don't uncritically believe what i wrote here either. if you're seriously interested in these topics then your source for this information shouldn't be some tumblr post in the first place. there are lot of studies, documentaries and articles about all the things i mentioned. i'm not a researcher or a scientist, so don't ask me. i'm just tired.

Below are some of the pros and cons of each faction as I seem them.

The Phyrexians: Magic's ultimate bad guy, and all assimilating, corrupting force that at it's peak began to declare war on all of existence across the multiverse, everywhere, all at once. Pro - Phyrexian Oil - Phyrexians bleed corruption, the ichor of their bodies will slowly contaminate those it touches. The very act of killing them can over time turn you to their side. Pro - The Reality Chip - Normally used to augment an individual it can also be applied to alter an individual making them easier to join Phyrexia via the process known as phyresis making you compleated. It is believed specific indivisuals can manipulate it in ways that streamline the process on those previous immune to it. Pro - Realmbreaker - The Invasion tree allows for multiple direct breeches into a single realm. Allowing for cross universe invasion. Pro - All Will Be One - In every battlefield everyone can become a part of the invading army. This includes the insects, beasts, birds, everything. The moment they land somewhere recruitment begins, they have even compleated actual Gods by corrupting the followers whose believe the Gods were connected to compleated as a result of that connection.

Con - Individual Reliant - There are few commanders in the vast Phyrexian forces known as the Praetors. Once these handful of individuals are destroyed Phyrexian forces turn into near mindless animals. Con - Realmbreaker/The Reality Chip - These are objects that in theory can be destoryed. Realmbreaker's branches do travel both ways and in theory can be tracked back to their source.

The Borg: Pro - Unlimited Leadership - The Borg Queen is a program installed into a drone. If she is destroyed another is instituted at near instant speed. There is no command post to destroy, no one person to kill that can actually halt the Borg. Pro - Adapt Negate Obstruction - The Borg are always learning and when a weakness or work around is found the required adaptation is shared with the entire collective and the adaptions made at the speed of thought. Pro - Assimilation - In the field the Borg can assimilate their opponents gaining knowledge of weaknesses and understanding of previously unknown technology.

Con - The Collective - What affects one Borg can in theory spread throughout the collective before the Queen is aware of it happening. If an enemy can figure out how to cause disruptions to the Collective the Borg fall apart.
Con - Underestimation - The Borg always tend to underestimate those they face at first. They never throw the required resources at a problem initially believing they can just adapt to whatever they run across.
Con - Fragile - The Borg have some shielding but that's about it. Overwhelming or properly implemented force over whelms them easily.

The Viltrumites Pro - Viltrumite Physiology - Capable of feats far beyond average creatures, tending to be on a scale physically where a single Viltrumite can overwhelm an entire planet. Their skin is near invulnerable. Pro - Interstellar Travel - Viltrumites can survive in space without aide. Pro - Healing Factor - Even if it takes time a Viltrumite can heal many things that would kill mortal creatures.

Con - Sound - There are sounds that cause Viltrumites great pain, or even paralyze them out right. In theory if the frequency of the strength is strong enough it could in theory kill them.
Con - Weaker On The Inside - Viltrumites are highly susceptible to internal attacks if you can somehow get past or around their skin. Their incredible healing factor also has as much trouble as a human dealing with disease if they can somehow become infected.

The Daleks
Pro - The Time War - Daleks have faced the Time Lords, a race that could manipulate time and were still on the brink of victory before the intervention of the Doctor. Pro - Exterminate - There are threats that exist in their universe that can phase out of existence if you look at them and yet the Daleks are considered the 'greatest fire in the universe' as there isn't a threat yet aside from the individual known as the Doctor that they have not been able to at least stalemate if not overcome. They even had the power to relocate specific planets to be used as the battery to a weapon that would erase all of existence outside of the little pocket they were hiding in that was one second ahead of the rest of existence.
Pro - The Dalek Body - The outer casing of a Dalek has been shown to be very resilient to many weapons. It can also survive in some pretty extreme conditions. Not only that but a Dalek free from it's casing can in theory highjack the functionality of a biological host it connects with.

Con - The Eyestalk - If you damage a Dalek's eyestalk you leave the Dalek blind.
Con - The Dalek Body - If a weapon is strong enough to over come the outer body they have no other defense. If the being inside the casing was to get infected with something they do not possess a strong or unique immune system.

the US government needs to subsidize fruits and vegetables and grains (intended for human consumption rather than the majority of it going to farmed animals, as is the current system of distribution) for increased variety and quality and quantity. it is absolutely imperative. a subsidy of what is it, 1%??? of what they spend on meat and dairy and eggs is absolutely insane when a mere fraction of the world’s protein even comes from those industries in the end.
our life expectancy is dropping. our healthcare is altogether inaccessible and a pipe dream at this point. the leading cause of death is STILL heart disease. colon cancer and breast cancer rates are high and affecting younger and younger demographics. zoonotic disease recently just caused a global pandemic and the next one is always imminent. and what little produce we have for ourselves is at risk for contamination by the runoff of waste from farmed animals.
dairy-dominance in foodstuffs disproportionately affects people of color, especially children who depend on school food programs which insist on milk as a non-negotiable staple of the menu. and most dairy is thrown out, anyway. how is any of this cost effective?
and all of this is not even yet counting the climate change contributions of an animal-product-reliant national diet for a country of this size and buying power.
iirc the average american eats 3 or fewer types of vegetables per week. several forms of malnutrition abound in even the middle class. how can a subsidy not be a dire necessity now?
this chokehold is exactly what Big Meat and Big Dairy and Big Eggs want. they are fucking loving it btw. richer and more powerful than ever, they are. and you are suffering for it.

Excerpt from Cowboy Bebop: The Jazz Messenger - History (translation below)

It all began in the year 2022, when a catastrophic explosion ripped apart a hyperspace gateway(*1) under construction in Earth's orbit.
Caught in the blast of the large explosion, pieces of the moon rain down onto the surface of the earth, rendering the planet uninhabitable due to widespread environmental destruction and radioactive contamination. What remained of humanity was forced to live underground in shelters. Those that could not find room in these shelters, were forced to migrate off-world. Luckily, the terraforming technology that was still in its research phase gained traction after the hyerspace gateway incident. Though it was the destruction of the gate that had forced humans from Earth, it was thanks to this very same technology that humans were able to establish a new life on planets beyond Earth.
Nations ceased to exist, and the races of old Earth began to mix.
And so ended use of the Western Gregorian calendar in favor of the Space calendar(*2).
Over time, each planet and satellite became its own independent nation and the economy began to recover. Smaller spaceships, like the one used by Spike and his crew, flood the market in droves (license required).
At the same time, economic inequality was rampant, there were more slums, and crime continued to rise (especially in the early years of the Space calendar when there were few laws in place and criminal organizations thrived).
In response to the surge in crime, the I.S.S.P (Inter Solar System Police) was established on every planetary body to fight against these interplanetary criminals. At the same time, a bounty system was implemented that granted bounty hunters extrajudicial power (which allowed the execution of any illegal acts committed in the process of apprehending criminals).
The story of Bebop takes place during this chaotic era, 50 years after the hyperspace gateway incident.
*1: I think a closer translation for the Japanese word for this gate, 位相差空間ゲート, would be phase shift gate, as that seems to be the scientific phenomenon referred to with the Japanese name, however, since your average viewer likely doesn't know what ‘phase shifting’ is, I understand why translators would go with a more localized term like ‘hyperspace’ or ‘astral gate’.
*2: I couldn’t find any references for how 宇宙歴 is translated in the English version. It’s possible the term was avoided altogether if it never showed up in dialogue.

Detroit: Become Family 2022 - Prompt 1: Alone

Hank remembered one of the big selling points when androids first hit the market was how low maintenance they were. How they had internal self diagnostics and repair programs built into them. How technology had reached a point that it could heal itself from damage or viruses or whatever.
Of course that had its limits, but some of those commercials were burned into Hank’s memory. He found them resurfacing in his mind as those first few weeks after the android revolution unfolded. The memory of the cheery voice of some paid actor—chirping “they’re so durable!” and “they can handle more than the average human and will last longer without getting tired!”—churned through his head against today’s televised imagery of battered and broken android bodies being processed through the recycling centers, of any that hadn’t shutdown limping into the sanctuary of Jericho’s walls, of those that braved the public walking stoically and trying to live their lives while having insults and judgment thrown at them.
Sure, anything could be low maintenance if you didn’t give a shit about it. Hell, humans could be low maintenance, and Hank was learning the hard way what low maintenance—and really, active self sabotage—could do to a body and a spirit. And after those first few weeks, reality was setting in for the population of Detroit, and one aspect of this new reality was that androids were people who needed maintenance just like humans did. And right now, there was a dearth of capable professionals willing to help them.
Cyberlife’s doors had been closed for nearly a month. All their storefronts, warehouses, corporate offices, supply shops, and repair shops had all closed in the aftermath. Anybody with Cyberlife on their resume had by and large fled the city, maybe fearing a violent turn in the android revolution that would have put a target on their backs. There were a few independent businesses that offered android maintenance and repair services, but Cyberlife had kept such an iron grip on their products and services that they had done an effective job in running most independent competitors out of town.
So when Connor finally, quietly, sheepishly admitted to Hank that he was having some system troubles that his self repair program couldn’t fix…Hank knew they were in trouble.
Connor had been shot at least once during that tussle with the other RK800 in Cyberlife’s basement. And between when he left after that and when Hank saw him again the next morning at the Chicken Feed, he’d managed to look worse. So who knew what happened to him in that period of time. He’d been so insistent that his self repair program could take care of all of it, and Hank didn’t know enough about android shit to argue otherwise.
Until here they were a month later, and Connor had admitted that his self repair program had fixed the external damage of getting shot in the shoulder, but it hadn’t been able to repair everything going on under the surface. Something about…synthetic muscle belts being out of calibration and limiting his range of movement…contaminants from the bullet casing penetrating his thirium stream and causing micro-tears in his lines…which gave those contaminants room to dig in…And how his system was working overtime to try and flush them out, causing him to start overheating, especially around the damage point…and that was making the area tender to the touch as thirium flow and delicate manufactured sensors started acting essentially as nerve endings.
Now Hank didn’t know fuck about shit when it came to android stuff, but all of that to him sounded like Connor had an infection at the damage site. His theory had been reinforced when he’d seen how inflamed, for lack of a better word, Connor’s shoulder looked when Connor let him see it. Yep, it looked infected, and it was making him sick.
So…now Hank had a sick android on his hands and no technicians or…android doctors or whatever they were calling themselves now…in sight.
Jericho had gathered a few resources. They had some supplies and certainly the know-how that would help…but Connor wasn’t welcome there. Markus and some of the others had accepted him and forgiven him for his role as the Deviant Hunter, but they were a minority. So Connor was emphatic that going to Jericho wasn’t a good idea.
The surviving independent businesses that were still offering repair services were slammed all day long with androids with all manner of damages and maladies. Again, androids who had cause to hate Connor and who might see his vulnerability as an opportunity for revenge. So Connor was emphatic that it wouldn’t be safe to go there.
A bunch of shady back-alley repairmen had started cropping up too, offering cheaper, low quality repairs to androids who were terrified of being on the radar and were willing to prioritize discretion over professional standards. That was out of the question.
The DPD…or the 7th precinct where Hank worked at least…was in the process of bringing back the law enforcement androids who had worked there prior to the revolution. Hank hadn’t told Connor this, but Hank had been having private conversations with Fowler about bringing Connor back on board. He was a good detective and officer, and those were in short supply at the moment with everything going on. Fowler was still resistant to the idea, but Hank was wearing him down. He had already brought back all the PM700s and PC200s that had wanted to come back, along with some ST300s that used to work the reception and file rooms. Plus some new ones.
All that to say, the 07 had elected to bring on an in-house technician, a guy formerly of Cyberlife but reputable, to take care of when the DPD androids were inevitably targeted or damaged in the line of duty. The station tech was the only option Connor had left, and despite Connor not being employed or registered to the DPD at the time, Fowler had at least pulled a few strings for Hank to let him bring Connor in for an examination and repairs.
Connor had reluctantly agreed, avoiding the bullpen or anywhere that the other androids or officers might spot him, and Hank had felt his heart twisting his chest at how anxious he was about being recognized—or worse—for being where he ‘didn’t belong.’
The station tech had worked wonders, got Connor patched up and on some round of…android antibiotics or whatever…and sent them on their way.
Now they were safely back home afterward, and the poor guy was exhausted and hadn’t moved from the couch since.
Hank kept glancing at him as he folded laundry on the kitchen table, and every time the sight was the same. Connor was lying on the couch, eyes closed, deep in rest mode per the tech’s instructions. The immobilization sling on his arm was keeping his shoulder still, and in a few hours he was supposed to take another dose of that anti-inflammatory powder mixed in with some cold thirium to help flush out that infection.
Sumo would occasionally lumber over and sniff at him before losing interest and coming over to nose at Hank’s leg. Currently, the dog was standing beside the couch, tail swishing slowly with curiosity as he watched the android rest.
“Sumo,” Hank whispered at him, setting down a folded towel. “Leave him be. He’s not feeling well.”
Sumo glanced at Hank, looked at Connor again, and made a tiny whine of protest as his favorite android didn’t immediately get up to play with him.
“Hey,” Hank chided quietly. “C’mere.”
Sumo huffed and then plodded over. Hank set down the laundry and ruffled his hands behind both of the big dog’s ears.
“I know, I’m worried about him too, but he’ll be okay. He’s got us, right?”
Yeah, Hank and Sumo were about the only ones that Connor had nowadays. Christ.
Hank shuddered to think what might have happened, how much worse it could have been, if Connor had been truly alone since the revolution. Cyberlife had done a bang-up job of making sure he was truly ostracized from his own people, and humans like Hank hadn’t wanted anything to do with him before the revolution. Most didn’t want anything to do with him now.
No other friends. No family. Pretty much no support from Jericho. Abandoned by Cyberlife. Cast out of anywhere that had ever made use of him. Alone. Hank couldn’t say he knew what that felt like on an android-level, but…he knew what loneliness was.
Well, he wasn’t alone now. And if Connor could peel a pathetic drunk like Hank off his kitchen floor and manhandle him into becoming a functioning human again, then Hank could sure as Hell make sure Connor had what he needed to get healthy again after this. And he could probably do it without breaking and entering through a kitchen window like a maniac.
Sumo huffed again, then trotted back over to the couch, turned in a circle, and flopped down on the floor beside it protectively.
“There you go,” Hank bobbed his head, picking up another towel to fold. “You keep an eye on him, a’right? And maybe I’ll google some home remedies for, uh, for how to cool down overheating androids, yeah? Yeah…we’ll get him back on his feet in no time.”
After all, they were friends, right? What were friends for?

Ok I'm well aware I'm opening myself up to be called disgusting and dirty etc with this but like
We're overthinking cleanliness these days, right?
Like we're underthinking actual proven methods of common disease transmission like respiratory droplets, while at the same time I've just seen several people agree with someone saying it's "unsanitary" to pick up your coffee cup by the rim instead of the handle, and I'm just ????
For the average adult immune system, if your hands are contaminated enough that touching the rim of a mug is gonna make you sick, you should probably wash them immediately before you go anywhere near food or beverages - otherwise, humans are animals and we're covered in pathogens. Very few things in our daily lives are sterile and they don't stay that way for long. The rim of that mug is already teeming with the same kind of bacteria as reasonably clean hands unless you boiled it alongside the water for your drink. Your body is designed to deal with that.
Idk maybe my perspective is skewed because I basically live on a farm but like. My hands are almost always slightly grubby? The kitchen area is kept clean and when I'm prepping food, I wash and sanitise my hands, and I'll always defer to the hygiene standards the people around me require, but otherwise I will absolutely sit and chew on my nails after planting some bulbs and Vaguely Rinsing Em Off, and I haven't even gotten Slightly Sick because I wasn't raised in a plastic bubble full of disinfectant
