Morozko from the 1924 russian movie "Morozko" by Yuri Zhelyabuzhskiy.
Morozko (Grandfather Frost) is a spirit of frost or sometimes a wizard of winter. Since the 19th century this character has changed, and now he is a symbol of the New Year holiday. Morozko is similar to Santa Claus in his modern role in russian culture.
Honestly, I made this post only to promote the movie. You must see it, it's good. Morozko of 1924 is a silent movie, you can just read the tale to understand what is happening on the screen. The movie is basically a horror (but not really scary, not in modern sense at least), and the plot of the movie is closer to the fairy tale than the plot of the 1964 version.
Pro:
it's a movie adaptation of the fairy tale
it's a horror
Morozko!
actually interesting to watch
it's just 35 minutes long
authentical folk costumes from a century ago
wedding (the wedding song is a banger!)
There are no cons. Just watch it! :)

What fans say:
Kung Fu Panda:
Honestly iconic. The progression of story, the message, the acting.
The way this movie balances tone is nothing less than astonishing to me. It's funny and lighthearted but also intense and dramatic and neither ever take away from the other. Every joke and emotional beat lands excellently. Not to mention. The fight scenes SLAP. And so does the score!!
It's just GOOD. I love how all of them were insanely genuine. Po genuinely wanted to be a Kung Fu master. The Furious Five genuinely wanted to be the very best like no one ever was. And Tai Lung genuinely wanted to kick the shit out of anyone that even looked at that dragon scroll. But seriously one of the best movies.
Treasure Planet:
The setting and focal relationship!
WHALES IN SPACE. Second best treasure island adaptation (#1 is muppets). The song The Song!!
Where do I begin with this movie? It blends CG and hand drawn animation beautifully. All of the backgrounds are gorgeous. There are so many cool alien designs. The score is absolutely perfect. The amount of detail put into the design and worldbuilding shines through. All of the characters are so much fun to watch, especially Long John Silver and Captain Amelia. This movie takes at least partial responsibility for my love of space/sky pirates. Also it was actively sabotaged by Disney so I need to vouch for it at every chance.
Space pirates in a classic novel. It's gorgeously animated with a blend of 2d and 3d. Also, LONG JOHN SILVER HAS A 3D HAND thats hecking impressive for a main character to be a blend of the two in 2002. Did I mention the twink protagonist and malewife for the rich halfwit son? The aliens are beautifully unique, and a mantis guy floats off into space. from a pirate ship. because they aren't just space pirates, they're aliens and cyborgs on pirate ships going through space. Which fucking rocks.
It's a genuinely creative adaptation of Treasure Island that has so much heart and incredible animation. It helped pioneer 3D animationa nd it was the first feature animated film to utilize both 2 and 3 D animation
The animation is so good, and the way that the antogonist isn't black and white, he genuinely cares for the protagonist <3
Pirate ships in space!
Watched this on loop as a kid, gave me solace for not growing up with a dad
It fucks
The ☆A n i m a t i o n☆!! And captain Amelia
It's so fun looking, cool character design. It's funny, it's emotional. I love it so very much please aaaaaaa
How this movie looks is absolutely amazing. A space-steampunk pirate story with fantastic visuals and (mostly) great characters. The vibes this movie has are off the charts. Jim is the bad-boy-good-heart kid, the doctor is a silly-goofy-but-oddly-competent support and Silver is a complex father-figure-who's-made-mistakes. Also MORT the cute little jelly that won me over in 0.5 seconds flat. I am also a slut for a good soundtrack and this one SLAPS. I will stand by my opinion that the Russian version of the song I'm Still Here did a better job of fitting the montage and the mood. That's a hill I will die on.

Yeah the Plow drama was WEIRD. Dozens of PSAs about how staff is racist, all based on a white TOH fan's unsourced viral post. The SPOP guy who announced his best friend's podcast canceled because he said the word "dykes" which is in the title. I even had mutuals saying that ND had the DUTY to step up and interrupt him. The constant videos about how ND is TRANSPHOBIC because Double Trouble is "sexualized" and "evil". Queer people are nuts.
So a couple of things here:
The Sow* stuff was real. The crew actually apologised for it and said that they didn't mean anything by it, but that nobody should excuse them for it. I appreciate this response. It was a whole thing. Also it all happened before The Owl House even started airing... (EDIT: Incorrect comment because TOH started airing seven months beforehand) but I don't want to pretend the Sow stuff was a big hubbaloo over nothing. It meant a lot to people and I think it demonstrated a lack of self awareness within the crew. There are other moments like this. The Entrapta leash gag was brought up a lot at the same time as another example of insensitivity, and I absolutely agree, but I do respect that the crew responded to the backlash the best way they could - by admitting their wrongdoing and saying theyll work on having a better perspective. I do think there are other areas they could've done better as well, like Mara turning "blonde", and all the characters having magical multicoloured hair instead of natural black hair, or even dark hair that was dyed a different colour. Some of those are handovers from dreamworks shera but it still sucks. *Sow, not Plow. We both forgot.
I don't know anything about the podcast. Never heard of it. However, if that is true, that's really unfortunate - Everyone has turned hard against "dirtier" terms like Dyke, despite how much work has gone into reclaiming them. Also, whether "queer" is a socially acceptable self-descriptor seems to vary on a year by year basis. People need to recognise other queer people are not slandering them by using these terms.
Double Trouble being an "evil nonbinary shapeshifter" right? Well, Nimona is also an evil nonbinary shapeshifter. Nimona being nonbinary is a new aspect of her presented in the movie too, not the original comics. And it's fucking awesome!!!! I think what people have been starting to realise is that evil nonbinary shapeshifters are the ultimate genderfluid power fantasy. I think it's fair and valid to want more visualisations of nonbinary people who can exist in a real world, who didn't "start off" with magical genderless abilities, but I also think there will always be a place for the nonbinary shapeshifter.
Your comments reminded me of some people's takes on Entrapta as autistic rep, and how she is seen as bad because she's the autistic savant. And yes, the autistic savant is a stereotype, but I feel that Entrapta subverts it aggressively. She's a genius but she's rather dense, she's VERY friendly unlike most "autistic savant" characters and her social problems are highly relatable. She isn't hyper competent, but autism IS a "strength" of hers, not so much because of her genius, but because it allows her to ignore or question social standards that exist to hold people back. She doesn't give a shit how important Hordak is, or what a Horde soldier or Rebellion princess is supposed to be like. She's free, and very much a power fantasy in the same way Double Trouble is. Hell even in aforementioned "leashing scenes" that I have problems with, she breaks free as soon as it starts to be annoying. I love her.

just a disclaimer: i’m queer and nonbinary (afab) as can be, so all of this is from a personally queer perspective? i also know that i don’t tend to really jive with ND stevenson’s work (she-ra didn’t quite work for me) either and if you loved the movie, great. i just gotta drop thoughts somewhere because well
they’re less than positive
like “nimona” wants to be a Queer movie so badly, but the entire humourous basis of the character herself is that she is 1) young looking (despite being immortal) and 2) appears to be AFAB and isn’t it funnily jarring when little girls want to be violent instead of cute and sweet?
She doesn’t want to be a monster, but clearly genuinely enjoys destroying things (again: basis of the bulk of her character humour, and one of most defining character traits) with no regards to anyone who gets hurt or could get hurt in the process.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
also this is Entirely Personal preference but while the animation was stunning, the contrast in the medieval aesthetic and modern day technology just continually brought me out of the movie. which is too bad, because treasure planet and it’s 70/30 rule and aesthetic blend of old timey and big technology is one of my favourite things ever, but i think Nimona being 50/50 just... didn’t work for me. was also slightly disappointed that i figured out who the actual bad guy was before the queen’s death (and yet another movie with a black queen who Dies Instantly / a movie with literally queer men of colour being technical side characters to a white, allegorically queer main ‘female’ character).
Ballister is a great protagonist, but due to his opposition of everything Nimona is personality and scheme wise, it feels like they’re almost running around in two separate stories. As well as like - he wanted to enjoy the Elite, Privileged, fighting force? An elite, privileged, entirely based on birthright system ruled by a Black queen before it was called into question, when it’s also a pretty clear allegory for the Police? The fact that this isn’t resolved - what’s going to happen to the Institute, is it going to be reformed or even better yet, disbanded (‘defunded’), is entirely left hanging as a plot thread, which doesn’t happen matters.
Halfway through the movie (specifically Nimona’s “or that sometimes I want to let them [kill me]”) is when I finally started to feel emotionally invested, but like two scenes later when Ambrosius’ stabbing was over dramatic rather than just letting the tone hold, I looked into the camera just... so incredibly unimpressed. The monopoly and shark dancing didn’t help.
“She’s my friend.” “Aren’t I more than that?” so there were no aspec people in making this film. Got it. And Ballister’s heel face turn into calling Nimona a monster is also very quick, especially when his whole arc this movie is being unfairly demonized himself by the very same thing/people that are demonizing Nimona as well. The sheer harshness and length of the scene is also much longer and given time than him saving her, leaving that feeling kinda lopsided as well.
And Nimona’s issues I think are very evident in the fact the movie lets us see all the damage she’s causing at the end when she loses control, which is sad and tragic for her... but does not excuse or remove the real harm she’s bringing hundreds of other people. This is mitigated when she sacrifices herself to save the city, but given that her problem wasn’t necessarily selfishness so much as recklessness, and given that Ballister had literally just talked her down from suicide, it’s... Muddled to say the least.
And all of this ties back into the murky gender allegory of the movie. At its best, it’s very effective and very emotionally resonant (Nimona’s actual flashbacks and a couple of her conversations with Ballister. I can definitely see why people like it - hell, even I like it. “This monster is a threat to our entire way of life!” “What if we’re wrong?” kinda perfectly encapsulates were it falls flat to me, because queerness Is a threat to our current systems - capitalism, racism, cisheteropatriarchy founded on white gender essentialism. Queerness, particularly of gender, disrupts and should disrupt all those things; it’s a political identity just as much as personal one, both by choice and by societal circumstance.
TLDR; found the second half of the movie, overall, much stronger than the first, but with some bigger structural pitfalls. Animation was gorgeous, sense of humour didn’t overall work for me but that’s a personal thing, queer allegory was good but I would’ve liked some of the implications to be taken farther. I appreciate the movie for what it says about freedom of expression vs demonization by the upper class(es), and I think it’ll really resonant and be important to queer youth in their teens (a stage I am long past) figuring themselves and their place in an increasingly anti-trans political climate out, so I’m very glad it exists. It just wasn’t particularly groundbreaking, and wasn’t particularly up my alley. Which is kind of what I expected, but I am disappointed that I didn’t enjoy it more as a nonbinary person who loves story deconstructions, fantasy, and animation

A ramble about Dr. Blitzmeyer's clothes (pt 2)
There is no point that I'm trying to make with this, I've just been staring at pictures of her for so long I thought of this
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is movie concept art of her introducing Ballister and Nimona to a secret organization of scientists called the Silver Society that end up helping them. Already her outfit is much different than that comic. Her lab coat is much longer and she's got a purple skirt on. I don't think comic Blitzmeyer would be caught dead wearing a skirt in a laboratory bc of all the safety hazards it presents but it looks nice ig. She's still got the belt that she wears with her lab coat but they've put a little pouch on it. I think that's actually really smart and in-character because then she can keep supplies in there. They've shortened her hair, it was down to her waist in the comic, and they've shortened her too. In the comic, she's about Ballister's height, maybe even slightly taller. Here, she's a whole head shorter. Also there are no goggles????? I like this art and I think she would wear this outfit but not in this context. (Art by Jeff Turley)
instagram
2. An animation test. I love everything about the movement in this video but that's a separate post; I'm here to talk about her clothes. They've given her goggles back which is good but I still don't think she would be wearing a skirt. I know they're trying to lean into the magic/witch side of her character and typically people think of witches as wearing dresses, but she wears a dress in the comic only once in a super short scene. I don't even think you can see the bottom of the dress; as far as the reader knows, it's a sweater (we find out it's a dress in an official art by ND Stevenson but it's not part of the canon timeline). Also the dress has dangly sleeves?? That is just asking to get set on fire in a laboratory setting. It's an interesting character choice because in the comic, her work clothes were the tightest outfit she wears to avoid workplace accidents, but I think they made this choice here because of the before mentioned witch thing. In this animation though I like her boots and her pants, I do think she would wear those and they look quite good on her. (Art by Louis Jones)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. This is a very interesting one. It's another piece of concept art from when she was Ballister's getaway driver. We can't see her bottom half here but her top isn't like anything else we've seen for the movie so far. I would say this is the outfit that draws from the comic most so far. She's got a black undershirt with a scooping neckline under a white... thing? At first, I thought it was a tank top because the arm sticking out of the car doesn't have a sleeve but then I noticed that the arm going into the car does have a sleeve. Maybe it's a weirdly styled shirt or lab coat? The white top does have a collar on it and the whole thing looks reminiscent of the outfit she wore in the comic when Ballister came over to her apartment; it was a baggy white shirt with a collar unbuttoned to show a black undershirt. There's a line going over the shoulder that's sticking out of the car as well. At first I though it was a continuation of the undershirt sticking out from the white top but the color is wrong. Now I think it's the strap for the brown purse she often wears in the comic. She's still missing her goggles but I love how they made her hair long and crazy again. (Art by José Manuel Fernández Oli)
Bonus:
Tumblr media
You can't really see her outfit in this one but I'm including it anyway because she's in it and I love her. (Art by José Manuel Fernández Oli)

I'm really vibing with spreading my culture around here so I wanna present you guys a person
Tumblr media
This is Monica, a popular character of a brazilian comic franchise for kids!
(Everybody reads it tho)
She has this lil bunny called Sansao (yea like the biblic character), is known for being super strong and hot-headed. These comics are often light and funny, with some fantasy nonsense sometimes in special editions
The four main characters are;
Monica herself
Cebolinha (little ognion)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A boy who king of frenemies-to-lovers with monica and is known for making plans to annoy her and he has some problems with spelling
Magali
Monica's best friend, known for having this cat, being very sweet and eating like a motherfucker dragon
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cascao
Cebolinha's best friend. They are often togheter, making hyper-elaborated pland to turn down Monica, but he's usually the voice of reason in the friendship
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's also known for not liking water and being very smelly
So, hm, its a little weird talking about it to foreigns, but that's it
Curiosities
The man who used to make the comic is called Mauricio de Souza and he inspired the main characters Magali and Monica on his daughters
He is not leading the comic anymore, and now the franchise is being driven by his son, Mauro, who's gay 🏳️‍🌈
The content used to be very violent, mostly when Monica was angry at Cebolinha for annoying her and shouted at him. Yea, that is the dinamic in oldest comics
Now he's making it more friendly and inclusive
This franchise has 60 years lol
There are movie adaptations, cartoons and another comic series for this franchise. The another series features monica and her friends in hight school, and is called Monica Teen
Tumblr media
Monica Teen's stories are more structured, have a manga style and the story often gets more seriously. The characters also old in this comic, being the first volumes they appear very young (14yo or so), but in the latest they look more 17yo. This series also have a magical/anime approach many times, and many, but not all, stories are related.
More black characters are in the cast now, as in before all of them were purely white
Tumblr media
Milena, a new character in the comics. She is in the cast of both Monica 'nd friends (the comic) and Monica Teen
Some editions are special and feature important issues like environmentalism and ableism with an educative approach
One of the regular characters is Luca
Tumblr media
A wheelchair user and Monica's childhood crush
This is Dorinha

re: wakanda
Tumblr media
I'm osage myself and I can't pray out loud anymore without people thinking I'm talking about a fictional country from a marvel movie bc they also stole our pronunciation.
it's important to note that the creators of black panther were both white.
black folks deserve better than to have a word from another culture attributed to them instead of the writers actually doing genuine research into the many indigenous cultures of the african continent and working from there, and indigenous american folks deserve better than to have our most sacred words appropriated by white dudes who think indigenous and black ppl are interchangeable "magical mysterious forces of nature" /gen
Thank you for the source!! I really wish they'd sorted out this travesty before they made a movie franchise. But followers you can help too!!! Spread this far and wide! Maybe we could like use asterisks like this: w*k*nd*
Or maybe we could come up with an African alternative word? Kinda how for Pacific rim we say Lady danger instead of the g slur? I know it's not a slur but maybe black ppl could weigh in??
Since I'm not black I'll just be posting and reblogging suggestions.

Its v confusing to me when ppl say headcanoning c!Dream as nd is villainizing neurodivergent ppl. Like as someone who is autistic & adhd for me it does the opposite? It makes c!Dream feel more human and real. Mayb thats just the apologist brainroy tho lmao
not only is it confusing, it’s also borderline infantilising. (long post!)
sure, a character who is a villain BECAUSE they’re neurodivergent is vilifying and ableist. usually the shows/books/movies who follow this trope add a layer of stigma to a group that is already stigmatised — im thinking of the movie split and what a harmful (and incorrect) message that spread about people with dissociative identity disorder. there are loads of pieces of media out there where those characters exist, and it’s only in the last ten or so years we’ve started (slowly) moving away from them, imo.
HOWEVER, there is a difference between a character who is evil BECAUSE OF their neurodivergency, and a character who is evil AND neurodivergent. at that point, the two ‘traits’ (evil + neurodivergent) aren’t codependent on each other, and instead exist outside of each other. the character doesn’t do evil things because they’re neurodivergent: they do things for other reasons, and their neurodivergency affects them. they’re not linked.
the thing i dislike about the “evil characters can’t be neurodivergent” protest is that it sets neurodivergent people up to an impossible standard. it says “neurodivergent people cannot possibly be evil or bad” and plays into the “innocent + pure good” trope of neurodivergency that verges on infantilising. neurodivergent people who do bad things exist ,, neurodivergent people who do good things exist. neurodivergence isn’t what makes someone good or evil and claiming nd evil characters are vilifying neurodiversity isn’t looking at the bigger picture — or real life.
c!dream, for example, has adhd. his actor does, the character is playing by the actor, it’s an understandable headcanon and it makes sense. c!dream also does horrible, terrible things. he didn’t abuse c!tommy in exile because he has adhd 💀 sure, looking at his actions through a lens of having adhd is a valid lens to have — his character has adhd, so of course it’s going to affect him and his line of thought / his actions etc — but his adhd doesn’t ,, mean he’s evil ?? and headcanoning that he (an ‘evil’ character) has adhd doesn’t mean calling adhd evil ?
honestly, the problem for me is really viewing people + characters as black-and-white good or evil, which leads ppl to see c!dream having adhd = vilification of neurodivergency. because a BAD character can’t have neurodivergency, he’s BAD, that implies everything about him is BAD!! like the moment u start claiming c!dream being neurodivergent means neurodivergency is vilified, say goodbye to blond haired people: they’re also vilified!! and people whose name starts with d!! and green eyed people!!
like at the end of the day headcanoning a character as nd isn’t trying to excuse or justify bad actions they do. but it offers perspective into their character, allows more depth for a character, and also negates the slowly growing social media purity culture that says “nd people can’t do anything wrong”
(tldr saying a character is evil BECAUSE they’re nd or mentally ill is weirdchamp but saying a character is evil AND nd should be normalised. nd is just another adjective to describe someone at the end of the day)

🦚 for the queer ask game!
🦚 - Are there any queer books/shows/etc. that you would suggest?
oh my god YEAH absolutely. i used to be a queer media connoisseur (im no longer a romance girlie when i consume media bc i write so much of it but i still have love for the genre). i'll do one rec for each category up here but ill put some more under the cut!!
book: aristotle and dante discover the secrets of the universe. it's my favorite book i've gotta put it out there. literally changed my life when i was like 16 i love it so much
show: there's so many popular ones that i feel like if you're gay you've already seen them by now, so im gonna throw a curveball and go with crazy ex-girlfriend. they talk a LOT about lgbtq+ identities and explore dynamics with different couples, and if you love musicals, you absolutely must go watch it rn i fear
movie: moonlight. oh my god if you haven't seen moonlight go watch moonlight it's so so incredible 10/10. a drama that follows a black gay man from childhood to adulthood, explores the themes of masculinity, family, and friendship as well as romantic love. it's just an incredible movie it deserves all the hype tbh
music: once again there's so many popular queer musicians nowadays that i Do Not HAVE to rec (you know the ones they go hard), so im gonna rec chrissy chlapecka!! she just makes such incredible, sugary-sweet pop music about such amazing fucked up shit i love her
send me some gay asks!
okie doke as promised here's some more recs from yours truly bc i really, really love media and have a collection to rec atp NDNKFNKND ill try to order them by genre from least to most obscure LMAO
BE WARNED: i do read some graphic stuff - im an adult and my media taste reflects that. before you read anything i rec, look it up for trigger warnings!! i don't want anybody to be hurt by something i recommend. <3
books:
of course like. simon vs the homosapien agenda by becky albertalli is out there. this is one of those classics i was talking about KDNKFNFK it's very ya-gay-romance-romcom you can eat up ya know. the movie's also not too bad (people think it's 'cringey' nowadays but that was HUGE for me when i was like 19 and had my first girlfriend). anyway it's feel-good fluff if you like that kind of thing!!
red white and royal blue is obviously another classic and one i can't rec enough. i love the way its written, i love the characters, i love the plot. like it's everything, if you're into the romcom vibe this is a great one to check out. (and as a bonus this one also has a movie and it Slaps)
it's not like it's a secret by misa sigura is a pretty solid wlw coming-of-age novel that i highly rec if you're into the rom-com type book. it's also got some EXCELLENT poc representation!!
bloom by kevin panetta is a graphic novel and i love it. so so so much. truly i think i read this in a day and i am NOT a huge graphic novel reader. feel-good romcom, poc rep, body diversity, AND pretty pictures. what is there not to love. everyone should read bloom tbh
lies we tell ourselves by robin talley is Probably my favorite wlw book ever. it's historical fiction and it is Everything to me. and im actually a known historical fiction hater so take it from me - its Good.
carry on by rainbow rowell is i think a classic at this point and i love it. so so so much. you ever identify with a character a little too hard. yeah thats me and this book. i gave my best friend a copy for her graduation. it is an Excellent take on 'remember all the heroes you wanted to be gay when you were a kid. imagine if they were.' it's my beloved
a hero at the end of the world by erin claiborne is another great one in the same vein, with a punchy, dry humor twist. basically if you were a harry potter kid but you hate jkr. you'll love this one and carry on KSNDKDNFK
nimona by nd stevenson is another graphic novel!! it's another fantasy, so if that's your cup of tea, i highly recommend it. it's got an amazing queer love story, a genderfluid protag, and most importantly, found family. literally everything. (it also has a movie but i haven't seen it yet
the raven cycle by maggie stiefvater is HUGEEEE i love that series it reshaped me. it's. mystery/supernatural i would say? it has multiple of my fave queer characters of all time and honestly. everyone there is a little gay. one of my absolute faves <3
we are the ants by shaun david hutchinson is a sci-fi horror adventure story and this one. it stuck with me. the main character hit me so hard and his internal struggle is so SO interesting. if you're into this kind of shit. give it a shot!
every day by david levithan is not one of MY all-time faves, but i can still say it's super interesting and has great rep!! it has a genderfluid/agender main character (depending on how you look at it). i will say i think there are multiple books in the series (?) but i stopped at one bc. it made me too sad anyway. <3
the perks of being a wallflower by stephen chbosky is not queer bc it's explicitly about a queer character or a queer love story, BUT. it still has one of my favorite lgbt characters of all time. patrick you will always be famous to me. as a bisexual girl in a catholic high school, saw a Lot of myself in patrick. (i do also have a special place in my heart for the movie bc it was my depression movie as a teen but patrick is played by ezra miller so be warned)
one of us is lying by karen mcmanus is another one that's not just. About a Gay Couple BUT it is one of my fave books (a murder mystery retelling of the breakfast club) and it has a gay main character!! his struggle with his sexuality is something he really struggles with and he has a boyfriend and i adore him.
shows:
i mean obviously like. heartstopper is incredible. like i said im not super into the romcom/young adult genre anymore but that show is just so beautiful and amazing and really healed my inner gay teen. it has a really diverse cast and representation for all kinds. i really recommend it!!!
everything sucks was gone before its time, but it is SUCH an amazing show. it has one of my fave on-screen wlw couples of all time. it's a feel-good, coming of age classic and i miss it deeply. (what did you just say??? 'katie rewatch it' oh my god you're onto something)
now if yall know me. glee is absolutely gonna be on this list. is it good? technically no. is it one of the greatest pieces of satire ever created? up until season three yes. i realized i was gay via santana lopez. THE gay character of all time. and all the love in my heart for all the other lgbt characters (kurt hummel you will always be famous to me......) some of it's a little dated (don't get me STARTED on unique) but it does genuinely have some great lgbt rep and if you watch it with a grain of salt it's a great comedy
julie and the phantoms made by kenny ortega (of THE high school musical and descendants fame) and it has a gay character i love!! (actually technically it has a few <3)
i'm a huge consumer of kids' media (i think phineas and ferb is a literal masterpiece and im not even kidding) so if you're like me and enjoy the disney/kid show beat i cannot rec andi mack enough. it's dramatic it's campy it's fun it's silly it's got a FANTASTIC gay character and a gay couple i deeply adore and not to mention!! so much representation!! it's like junior fosters tbh
we're gonna get into a little pocket here of like. normal romance but slightly niche - animes! sasaki to miyano is like my top lgbt anime rec. it is so, SO good. just absolute feel-good romcom goodness pls give it a shot
depending on interpretation, ouran high school host club arguably has a nonbinary character, some bi/gay characters, and a trans character! now. it IS hella dated do not get me wrong. BUT for the time? incredibly progressive and a wonderful watch. just brace yourself for some out of pocket shit
stars align has one of my favorite lgbt characters EVER, a nonbinary icon <3 and it's like. a PLOT. truly so rare to see something like that done on tv, let alone in anime. this is a sports anime - soft tennis my beloved - but it has So Much More To It than that.
another gay sports anime is run with the wind, a recent fave of mine. and i don't mean gay in the way that most sports animes are kinda gay. i mean he literally says 'im in love with this guy.' it's an amazing watch if you like that kinda thing!!
if you want an aroace genderfluid protag. the disastrous life of saiki k is up there as one of my fave animes ever AND saiki (the main character) is my fave protag of all time. this silly lil show is supernatural (ish?) and comedy all wrapped into one fantastic show i highly recommend!!
segueing back into live action shows, buffy the vampire slayer is an AMAZING, iconic, female-led supernatural dramedy with some early and, for its time, incredible lesbian rep.
yellowjackets because i LOVE unhinged lesbians. i didn't even know there was gay people in this - i started watching because i love horror and girls' soccer DLNKFNFLN and it's amazing!! if you like tragic gay women i HIGHLY endorse yellowjackets.
in the flesh. look. here's my pitch for itf. do you love being sad. do you love catharsis. do you love zombies. you will LOVE in the flesh. please. i miss it so bad i've seen this show 4 times (and you're right i should also watch this one again!!!) and i never tire of it.
sense8 is a sci-fi show and IT IS EVERYTHING TO ME. truly the diversity is unparalleled. so many lgbt characters of so many different identities. polyamory, trans people, a neuro-link that's destroying peoples' lives. it literally has everything.
the get down is not just an lgbt show, BUT it has an incredible lgbt character/storyline that i adore. a musical show, a historical fiction piece (which means a lot coming from me), and almost every character is a poc. pls give it a shot it's everything
bodies is another one that isn't just about lgbt+ rep BUT. it's incredibly diverse, examining people facing discrimination throughout history (you've got a gay mc, a jewish mc, a muslim mc, AND a disabled mc) and it just has such amazing plot lines and representation. it's a murder mystery/sci-fi double whammy, so give it a shot if you're interested!!
movies:
alex strangelove is a good, underrated, coming of age classic. it follows a guy who struggles with his sexuality. very teen rom-com-dramedy core!!
i adored boy meets girl when i watched it. a very romcom-y movie about a trans woman from a small town dreaming of getting out....... friends to lovers.......... i adore it
happiest season is a christmas movie and it's very sweet. its been panned (there are some just criticisms on the plot tbf) BUT i do think it's really cute
to wong fu thanks for everything julie newmar is just. so so good. it's an underrated classic imo. three drag queens go on road trip, end up in a small town, and change it for the better. it's literally so amazing it's just feel good found family PLEASE give this one a shot
the birdcage is another classic i so genuinely enjoy. who doesn't want robin williams and nathan lane as their gay dads. at the end of the day it's all about found family, love, and old gay men.
handsome devil is a foreign film - irish to be exact! - and i love it so much. once again as a catholic school kid.......... yeah. YEAH. anyway go watch the og gay nicholas galitzine movie LKNDKFNKNLFNKLF
pride is a historical piece and an excellent movie. it's got its ups and downs but god it's just an overall good movie. another irish film, coincidentally!
the way he looks is also a foreign film, this time in spanish, BUTTTTT it's one of my faves i love it so much. it's very feel-good, sweet, romcom so if you feel like you could be into that - give it a shot!!
rent, if you're into musicals, has some of my fave musical characters ever. angel dumott schunard you will ALWAYS be the love of my life. it is deeply sad but. other than that. i live in denial.
the prom is a much more light-hearted and silly lgbt musical. people shat on that movie but i think it's SWEET and cute and has some bangers!!
i mean like. we can joke ab how hyped it is all we want but brokeback mountain is basically required gay watching. it is EXACTLY as amazing as everyone says it is. the chemistry..... oh my god we could never make that movie again it was like catching lightning in a bottle.
bodies, bodies, bodies is a fun and campy lgbt horror if you're into that kind of thing!! the ending was a bit not my fave but otherwise it's an incredible cast and got some great silly scares
on the topic of gay horror, jennifer's body is gay and again, exactly as good as everyone hypes it up to be. you want gay women who are terrible to each other? oh boy do i have the movie for you
and i promise ill wrap on gay horror with it chapters 1 & 2. reddie will unfortunately always be famous.
everything, everywhere, all at once is not Just a gay movie BUT. it has an incredible gay character and it factors so interestingly into the mother/daughter relationship. i love that movie i will always talk about it
music (these are all just people i personally listen to but there are SO many more. im not gonna expand on these ones too much just go check em out you'll get it):

This is kind of unrelated to your blog but I’m happy I’ve found someone else who didn’t like Nimona. Like, I have other problems with it (the characters felt a little weak, especially compared to how I’ve seen them characterised in the original comic, the animation has a pretty base but a lot of the backgrounds and shading doesn’t feel complete, etc.), but mostly the politics annoyed me even at the time it came out, because I felt like it lacked nuance, and the characters managed to navigate and go against this super fascist society really easily. But now I can’t really stand media that is so brazenly accepting of super violent and destructive actions in the name of ‘bad government’ (except for stuff like Star Wars, but that’s cause it’s less about the political message and more about the actual characters involved)
don't get me wrong, I liked Nimona, the message just started to feel more and more iffy as time went on, especially when I looked at ND's twitter (don't check it) and realised they also have these black and white opinions about complicated real life multigenerational conflicts that they're not involved in.
also unrelated but fuck Disney for cancelling the movie, since they're also very guilty of pushing these kind of black and white messages, and we all know the reason is their queerphobia.

1. Gush about your f/o's sense of style/fashion!
dude spends most of the film in an outfit full of holes and pants that...well, they look like this:
Tumblr media
(in his defense, dude is under the impression this is his only outfit and doesn't know chance has some of his clothes back at the hotel.)
however, post bath dude looks sooo good (though rip to that sexy stubble)

God but no, seriously, how did y'all do it in Ye Oldene Days™
(We saw you like our vent before we added the bit about screeching like a pokemon onto the end of it and afawk you seem to know a thing or two or at least are older than us soooo)
Like how???
HOW?????
HOW??????????
Ah.
In Ye Oldene Days™, such as the '80s, '90s, and '00s, and halfway through the '10s, we were deeply closeted. So, we, the Inmara, very distinctly didn't.
We were in a lot of distress and not clear as to exactly why, and dedicated ourselves to creating a webcomic for 15 years, insisting that it was Very Important and would lead to some sort of Earth Shattering Revelation that the world would need to know, but we couldn't explain What It Was.
And it turned out that What It Was was that we were trans, autistic, and massively, ridiculous plural.
But, OK. We were also surrounded by family and peers that were either excellent allies already or out and proud about being trans, queer, or autistic (but not plural). And we were still closeted and in denial for the longest time.
A large part of our denial was internalized transmisogyny and pluralphobia.
We didn't want to be a trans woman at all. Trans women were gross and pathetic and The Worst Thing to be Ever. And we got that from our classmates, movies, T.V. shows, comedians, and from the greater culture in general. But also from our dysphoria. We didn't want to even have a Y chromosome. It felt absolutely wrong to us (and still does). But since we seemed to have it, or the SRY gene at least, because we were assigned male at birth and had the external equipment for that, we couldn't be what we needed to be. And being a satirical parody of what we needed to be would be worse than pretending to be male, we thought.
We were taught to think that way.
And the pluralphobia was similar, received from the same places in our culture, but reinforced by the problem that if we got diagnosed with DID that would threaten any chances of transition if we chose to finally come out and could miraculously afford it. Or so we thought.
So, when we came out, it was when we couldn't survive in the closet anymore. We were desperate and near death and couldn't live anymore like that. And it just so happened that we came out right when Obama established the ACA and Washington state adopted the rules that Medicaid must pay for transitional healthcare (and we'd just become poor enough to qualify for Medicaid).
And that's why we're alive today.
But it's really the ten trans masc dudes who were knew for ten years before we came out, our good friends who were on average ten years younger than us and out and proud for fifteen years longer, who you need to ask this of. They're our elders, and know what it was like to use bathrooms in the '00s.
Or the trans woman, Marian, who was our grandmother's friend and peer, who visited occasionally (who never inspired us at all because our internalize transmisogyny was too strong). We believe she's still alive and still working as an activist in Bellingham, WA, where we grew up.
But really, a lot of our survival even then, before and after coming out, has to do with where we live. The I5 corridor in the Pacific Northwest, especially in the moderate to large cities, is a relatively safe place for white queer trans ND people like us.
There are bigots and bullies. We were absolutely attacked regularly as a child, teenager, and young adult. But it has gotten better. (obviously can't speak for trans and queer people of color, especially Black and/or Indigenous people)
And, again, our family and friends group are accepting and supportive. We lost a handful of family and friends in coming out, and our friends group shifted dramatically, but we were able to find others to fill the gaps through social media networking and just showing up at a queer coffee shop almost daily for several years.
All that said, all that is going on today really is starting to feel a lot like the '80s did. It's a relevant comparison. And as some tumblr olds like us keep pointing out, the arguments and insults keep getting recycled, too.

Hello! Random question: What specific villains do you headcanon as being on the Isle of the Lost who weren't confirmed to be there (i.e. Prince Hans of the Southern Isles would presumably be on the Isle, as the antagonist of Frozen, although he was never mentioned in any of the movies/books/webisodes)?
Well, to be honest, I don't think anything after Tangled is canonically in Descendants. In fact, I think Frozen, Moana, Raya, Encanto, the Fairies movies, and a few other things, should be counted out of the Descendants' universe canon.
From what can be deduced from canon (movies/books/webseries), the Villains we didn't see mentioned but should be there could/should be:
Monsieur D'arque (BatB, the owner of the asylum)
Nasira (Jafar's sister, pretty much canon give the existence of Jay's cousin Jade. Jade can't be his maternal cousin because he canonically doesn't know who his mother is)
Morgana (Ursula's sister from the second movie)
Varian and Cassandra (Tangled the Series, which I have not seen though. I know they redeemed themselves at the end, but Auradon's purity culture don't seem to consider that, think of Iago and Anastasia Tremaine, just to say a few)
Kronk (same reasoning as above)
Sarouch and Madeleine (The Hunchback of ND 2)
Magiafuoco (from Pinocchio, Stromboli in the eng version)
Lucignolo (Lightwick in the eng version, he was a thief other than a runaway)
The Cat and Fox (I don't remember the ridiculous english names and I don't want to look it up, they're from Pinocchio too)
Mor'du (Merida is mentioned in the 3rd book)
Prince John, the Sheriff of Sherwood and the corrupted /complacent guards, the tax collectors and so on.
The Huntsman (Snow White) too, I suppose.
But there's canon and, you know, there's the fandom, and we get to choose.
So I'd add:
Hans (from Frozen, because yes. I also decided Arendelle is part of Auradon, the Northuldra Forest is not. One day I'll finish my fic and you'll know what I mean)
Shuriki and her entourage, plus all the minor villains from Elena of Avalor (yes, Esteban too, I think we agree on that)
You alredy know what I think of the matter of Bruno Madrigal.
Zarina (from the Pirate Fairy, for having been complicit of the pirates in the past)
Madame Medusa and Mr Snoops (The Rescuers)
Percival Mc Leach (The Rescuers 2)
Amos Slade (from The Fox and the Hound)
The Horned King (Black Cauldron. I guess. I have never seen the movie)
Commander Rourke and Helga Sinclair (Atlantis)
Alameda Slim (Home on the Range, that movie is absurd and I love it)
Namaari and her mother (Raya, see above for the reasons)
probably Maui too, since he was the one who caused Te Fiti to turn evil, but of course Te Fiti couldn’t be caught so Maui would be the next best scapegoat (did I say Auradon justice system sucks?)
Rasputin (Anastasia, Disney bought the rights so he could fit in)
I don’t like Nightmare Before Christmas, but Oogie Boogie too, I suppose, is a Disney Villain
Ernesto de la Cruz (Coco. He was revived along with all the old Villains)
If we add Live Action movies (not just the remakes), we may also add:
Nerissa (Enchanted, even if she died in New York, it's established Andalasia and our world are connected enough)
The Grand Duke from Cinderella
Teodora and Evanora aka the Witches of East and West (Oz the great and powerful)
The Sanderson Sisters (Hocus Pocus)
The banker William Weatherall Wilkins (Mary Poppins Returns)
Vizier Nizam (Prince of Persia)
I think it’s everyone I can think of.
