An Introduction to Highland Swordsmanship
During the 18th Century, the Highland Scot came into vogue in Great Britain.  After years of repression and persecution of the Scottish Gael, it was ironically the Highland Regiments of the British Army that preserved many of the proud Gaelic martial...
Background I’ve been teaching at the high school level online since 2015 (you know, before COVID made it vogue to do so). But I’d had a taste of it as a student since 2010 with the Cateran Society, where I began learning Highland Broadsword. It involved reading primary and secondary sources on Highland Broadsword fencing, videoing myself and fencing partners performing these, sending them to…

Behind the Scenes of The Christmas Invasion (Part 37)
Excerpt from the Radio Times, 17-30 December 2005, interviews by Nick Griffiths
Even Time Lords need a little combat training: "You do swordfighting in drama school, and I've done a few fight sequences before, mostly for the RSC," says Tennant. "But I'd only done a broadsword fight once before, in a version of King Lear a few years ago, and it's much harder work. With a foil you can be very dramatic, very quick, very sharp, very Three Musketeers. With a broadsword you need to get a bit of weight behind it; it's a slower process building that up into a fight." He and Sean Gilder's Sycorax Leader had several rehearsals. Tennant explains: "It starts - cut to head, parry to head, parry to shoulder, parry to leg. Then you try to speed it up, iron out the creases and hopefully add a little acting somewhere along the line. "I got bashed in the leg a couple of times. I had some padding on my backside for the falls backwards, but we were more or less OK." So he's adept at swordplay? "I won the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama's Stagefighting Award back in 1991," recalls Tennant. "It was only £15 or something, but it helped to pay off some debts as I headed into the real world." Doctor Who? Real world?

Incredibly random Janus headcannons because I have Thoughts about Them:
- Janus doesn't remember any of their early childhood, the earliest thing they can remember is being (presumably) 13 and joining guard training academy in O'Kasis
- Janus also didn't remember their name or their birthday. Their current legal documents were forged and aren't 100% accurate, but they don't have anything else to go off of
- His Blaze Broadsword (the orange one) is something he had on him when he joined the training academy. The Ice Broadsword was given to them by Zane at the age of 17
- They trained Ivy in swordsmanship before she properly became a Juror
- Janus lost their eye preventing an assassination attempt
- He may or may not have helped to kill the former High Priest of O'Kasis so Zane could take the position (they did)
- If you were to ask Janus who their favorite Juror was, they'd say that they don't have a favorite (it's Ivy)
- Lillian is his foster sister, but she's not his favorite because he's not her favorite Juror and he takes personal offense to that
- They've known Zane since they were 15, served as his personal guard for 6-7 years before going into the Jury
- Not saying he's a Nepo baby, but I am saying that the only reason he applied to join the Jury was because Zane was in charge of it
- Gives off horrifying vibes at all given hours of the day. 90% of the O'Kasian nobles fear them
- Have had the world's most complicated situationship going for roughly 10 years (that's rough buddy)
- Was a very unsettling child, but doesn't remember any of it

On October 29th 1740 James Boswell, the biographer, diarist and travel writer was born in Edinburgh.
Boswell is best known for the biography he wrote of one of his contemporaries, the English literary figure Samuel Johnson, which is commonly said to be the greatest biography written in the English language.
The son of Lord Auchinleck, Boswell matriculated in 1753 to study at the city’s University. In 1759 his father sent him to Glasgow, where he attended the classes of Adam Smith and others, but he tired of student life and fled to London on 1 March 1760. He became a lawyer, a writer and, and most famously the biographer of the aforementioned Samuel Johnson.
He first met Johnson on 16 May 1763 at Tom Davies Bookshop in Russell Street. It was the start of a lifelong friendship, with eventually Johnson calling him ‘Bozzy’.
By all accounts Bozzy was a handsome fellow, with an engaging character and great deal of charm evident in the portrait by George Willison attached to this post, painted during the early summer of 1765 when Boswell was in his mid twenties.
By outstandingly gatecrashing himself into literary circles James Boswell managed to introduce himself, during extended travels on the continent from 1763 – 1766, to two of the eighteenth centuries, and history’s most important civil liberty protagonists.
They were a dynamic duo, the self styled wit Voltaire (Francois-Marie Arouet), and political philosopher, educationist and author Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
James Boswell returned to England from his Grand Tour in February 1766 accompanied by Rousseau’s mistress. Three years later he married his cousin Margaret Montgomerie with whom he had six children.
In 1773 Boswell and Johnson shared a tour of the Hebrides. Boswell published an account of their journey in 1785, including a description of Johnson merrily swinging a broadsword and wearing traditional Scottish garb. Boswell brought Corsican nationalist Pasquali Paoli and the Polish ambassador Count Burzynski to visit Glasgow University. They were greeted by several professors and a large crowd of spectators, and toured the printing works and the Academy of Art with the University printers Robert and Andrew Foulis. They stopped off in Glasgow on their return, and stayed at the Saracen’s Head Inn near the University, which is still trading to this day.
For much of James Boswell’s life his father despaired of him. He didn’t follow his father’s profession and practice law, preferring his writing above all. However he did became 9th Laird of Auchinleck, but in the end his years of enjoying the good life finally caught up with him.
Not many people have a word named after them, to be ‘Boswellian’ means to be a constant companion and observer. Another noted Scotsman, Arthur Conan Doyle honoured his fellow countryman and writer Boswell in his works. His celebrated detective Sherlock Holmes said ‘that talent instantly recognizes genius’ and referred to his own cherished companion and observer, Dr Watson, as ‘my Boswell’.
After Johnson’s death in 1784, Boswell moved to London to try his luck at the English Bar, which proved even less successful than his career in Scotland. In 1792 Boswell lobbied the Home Secretary to help gain royal pardons for four Botany Bay escapees including Mary Bryant. He also offered to stand for Parliament but failed to get the necessary support, and he spent the final years of his life writing his Life of Samuel Johnson. During this time his health began to fail due to venereal disease and his years of drinking. Boswell died in London in 1795.
Boswell’s remains were interred in the crypt of the Boswell family mausoleum in what is now the old Auchinleck Kirkyard in Ayrshire. The mausoleum is attached to the old Auchinleck Kirk.

showing off my OC, mikhail! art by my wonderful friend, hyun! my beautiful ice mage professor knight came to me in a dream. i love him very much.
Tumblr media
⤷ PROFILE
Name: Mikhail (he/him)
AKA: The Violet Knight of Frost
Birthday: January 17, 78 D.R. (Capricorn)
Age: 24
Species: Human
Occupation: Knight Commander
Signature weapon: Requiem of Rime
⤷ BIOGRAPHY
The Knight Commander overseeing the Order of the Iris’ operations on Aeris Academy’s campus. Mikhail and his department are charged with training the next generation of Aerisian knights. While he doesn’t believe he makes the greatest mentor, Mikhail is considered the epitome of chivalry, the embodiment of Aerisian beliefs, and the perfect role model for aspiring knights.
The Violet Knight of Frost hails from a long-standing family of knights. His bloodline isn’t particularly known for outstanding combat abilities. However, they compensated with intellect — crafting battle strategies to ensure the Empire emerges victorious.
Mikhail was determined to be both a master tactician and warrior, which became a possibility after awakening his arcane attunement at the age of 14. He undertook arduous training at the Empire’s premier academy of magic to take full advantage of his potential. His dedication to improvement established him as one of the most promising knights of his generation, and Mikhail fulfilled that expectation after receiving the title of Knight Commander by the time he turned 22.
Despite Mikhail's insistence to serve on the frontlines, the grandmaster steadfastly believed that Mikhail’s talents would better serve the Academy. As he gained experience as a mentor and educator, Mikhail discovered his true sense of duty -- to protect all Academy students and to nurture a brighter future for all of Aeris.
⤷ TRIVIA
Mikhail has a sweet tooth! Here's a list of desserts he typically orders or looks for: cheesecakes, macarons, tiramisus, and sorbets (his favorite flavor is raspberry).
Primarily reads non-fiction books containing essays on politics, war, and philosophy, but he does indulge in novels he read during his youth. Its always about a valiant knight and their various heroic deeds.
He is particular about tactile experiences. He is fond of silk, velvet, and chiffon. He cannot tolerate full-grained leather, tweed, or wool.
His pen-spinning skills are impressive. Mikhail struggles with staying idle and feels like he must be moving frequently. He finds the roll of a metal pen between his gloved fingers soothing.
He is proficient with longswords, broadswords, parrying daggers, rapiers, lances, and heater shields.

A/N: For the Paradise zine! I wanted Byhardt slow burn throughout the years. Slow because they’re both a little dense.
i.
Linhardt yawned. It was bad enough that he was forced to come to the Academy, his classes interfering with his personal research and studies. Now they were interfering with his sleep. Maybe he should take a page from Bernadetta and hide in his room, only coming out for food and books.
“Hurry up already!” Caspar growled, his strong fingers wrapping around Linhardt’s wrist and yanking him forward. “We’re gonna be late ‘cause of you.”
“And that’s a problem why?” Linhardt sighed. Even if he did hide away in his room or the library or some cave in the middle of nowhere, he had no doubt that Caspar would find him there and then drag him out. There was no reprieve for him.
“We’ll miss the class.” Caspar glared at him as he hurried them down the path to the training grounds. Despite his small body, he was a powerhouse, and Linhardt went limp as he let Caspar drag him away.
“That would be a dream come true,” Linhardt drawled.
As they got closer to their destination, the sound of swords parrying, their blades clashing and bouncing off armour, grew louder. When they stepped in, the air was thick with the sickly sweet smell of sweat. Linhardt wrinkled his nose. Another reason he hated training. It was disgusting.
Inside, Dorothea sat on the ground, leaning against the door, her chest heaving as she tried to regain her breath. Petra and Ferdinand stood, but just barely, their limbs shaking from the effort. Only Hubert looked unaffected as he passively watched the battle before them.
And it was a battle. Edelgard crossed blows with their new professor, using a heavy broadsword in lieu of her usual axe. The professor easily countered. Linhardt couldn’t remember the last time Edelgard had difficulties in weapons practice.
Even Caspar was amazed. “She’s strong.”
Edelgard lunged and the professor dodged, her hair flying wildly behind her. She stepped to the right. A blunt blow to the wrist and Edelgard let go of her sword with a sharp breath. Her blade fell to the ground with a heavy thud, the professor pointing her own at Edelgard’s throat.
A defeat.
That was something utterly radiant about the professor’s smirk as Edelgard yielded.
“Fascinating,” Linhardt breathed, transfixed.
ii.
“Professor.” Linhardt padded steadily to Byleth’s desk. By now, the rest of the class had cleared out, the classroom empty save for the two of them. “I have a question.”
“What is it?” Byleth asked, looking up from her papers. “I—”
Realizing it was him, her lips set into a thin line. She leaned to the right, to the left, and sighed when she realized that he was the only one here. “A question about class, Linhardt?”
Her tone implied she doubted that to be the case.
“Absolutely not.” Linhardt kept his eyes focused on her as he talked, catching the minute changes in her expression. “It’s about your crest.”
Her expression somehow grew flatter. It was utterly fascinating—he had long considered Byleth expressionless, but clearly that wasn’t the case. No, she still had emotions, but subtler, harder to spot. He wondered what it’d take to get a big reaction out of her. He wondered what it’d take to make her smile.
“Between you and Hanneman, is there anything left to ask?” Byleth raised a brow, mildly exasperated. “No one in my family has it, I don’t know who my mother is, I have not come across anyone else with it, and no, it doesn’t provide me with extra strength or skill.”
Linhardt smiled, unfolding a piece of paper. Perhaps Byleth didn’t understand the fundamentals of a researcher, but there were always questions to be asked, hypotheses to be tested, and tests to be run.  “You said you haven’t met anyone. Could you tell me all of the places you’ve been?”
Byleth stared at him. Her long fingers rapped on the table steadily before she sighed once more.  Opening a drawer, she pulled out a scrolled paper and spread it across the table. It was a map of Fódlan. “You might as well grab a seat,” she added, pinning the map open.
He plopped down immediately. He had a lot of questions to ask, after all, and his feet were tired already.
iii.
The stone wall was cold. Linhardt focused on that one fact, that one sensation. Cold. Wet. Steady. It was strong in ways his roiling stomach wasn’t. His lunch tried to force itself up his throat and Linhardt closed his eyes, leaning against the wall as he fought it back down.
The stone wall was sturdy. His sweat was sticky. The faint scent of iron filled the air. A hand rubbed slow circles on his back. Linhardt opened his eyes, his gaze flicking to the presence to his right. Blue filled his vision and his eyes widened as Byleth leaned forward, concerned.
“Are you alright, Linhardt?”
Her other hand held a sword, still slick with blood. He couldn’t look away as a droplet slid down the blade, dropping to the dirt floor silently. That blood was on his hands too. His stomach heaved, eager to empty itself in this desolate tower.
“Breathe,” Byleth murmured, still massaging his back. Her hand was warm. He felt cold. “In the nose. Out the mouth.”
Linhardt tried. In the nose. Out the mouth. He kept his gaze on her, because if he looked anywhere else, he would see the thugs they’d just killed. There was a reason he had never wanted to come to this academy. Despite his duties to the empire, he wasn’t a fighter. He never had been. And now there was blood on his hands.
“Breathe,” Byleth commanded, harsher now.
He hadn’t realized he’d stopped. Linhardt stared into her eyes, the blues even darker in this moonlit ruin. In the nose. Out the mouth. The wall was cold. Byleth’s hand was warm. His stomach settled, just enough, and Byleth helped him straighten up before pulling back.
He still didn’t look away. He wasn’t ready to.
“Good. The first time is always the hardest.” Byleth flicked the blood off her sword impassively before sheathing it.
The first. His stomach churned at the thought. There would be a second. A third. Who knew how many? Linhardt curled his hand into a fist, his nails digging half-moons into his palm. The pain steadied him. “Does it get easier?”
“Sometimes.” Byleth looked away, studying their surroundings before turning back to him. “It depends on the person. It depends on the death. It’s probably better if it doesn’t.”
“Is it easier for you?” he asked.
She didn’t answer. For once, Lindhardt wasn’t sure if he wanted to know.
iv.
Byleth was dead. Or maybe just lost. Linhardt didn’t know what to think about that, what to feel about that. One moment, she had been there, leading the fight. The next, she had disappeared, swallowed by the chasm of which there was no escape.
He didn’t know how to react, so he didn’t. The Empire was entering a war, and there was always something new to study. Linhardt buried himself in his research, trying to ignore the empty spaces where Hanneman would push him, where Annette or Lysithea would tear into his ideas and rebuild them stronger.
There was an emptier spot where Byleth used to sit across from him, her expression torn between fondness and exasperation as he had yet another list of questions.
He couldn’t ask those questions anymore.
Something heavy settled in him.
He didn’t want to think about it.
v.
Byleth was alive. Caught in the heat of battle, surrounded by classmates he hadn’t seen in a while, Linhardt hadn’t had time to process the news before he’d plunged into battle with a legion of bandits. Now, after all was said and done, he had a moment to realize what it meant.
He wasn’t imagining things. Even pinching his thigh didn’t change the fact that Edelgard and Byleth were walking down the stone steps, Edelgard’s arm wrapped around Byleth to support her. Their former teacher looked exactly the same as she had all those years ago, her moss green hair somehow glowing in the early morning.
Lindhardt took an involuntary step forward. Byleth was here. A tension in his belly eased.
As ever, Caspar blurted out all of their feelings. “You’re alive?”
Byleth lifted her head lightly and nodded weakly. “I didn’t die.”
“We thought you had, Professor.” Ferdinand looked as confused as Linhardt felt. “It has been five years—what were you doing?”
“I…” Byleth pursed her lips, wincing as she tried to answer. Her eyes scanned them all, before landing on him. Smiling weakly, she answered, “I thought I’d listen to Linhardt and sleep for once.”
Linhardt’s shoulders relaxed, a weight he didn’t realize he had leaving. “You slept too long.”
She chuckled. “I don’t want to hear that from you.”
vi.
Linhardt found Byleth in the long-abandoned Black Eagle’s classroom. He wasn’t sure where he had expected to find her after today—not the church, the time for a goddess had long since passed. Not the food hall, it was well lit and always fun, with little room for privacy. Not the gardens, which weren’t free of prying eyes.
It had been luck she was in the fourth place he checked. Outside, it was dark, the moonlight seeping through the windows. The hearth had long since been put out, no new kindling to provide any light. That was fine; he’d brought a lamp of his own.
At the other end of the room, Byleth sat at her desk, her expression pensive as she stared at the half-erased chalkboard. She didn’t turn as he entered, didn’t do anything actually. Linhardt set his lamp on her desk and pulled a chair over to sit in front of her. They’d done this so many times before, in the time when he had been just a student, and the war wasn’t even a pipe dream.
Today, he didn’t have any questions but one: “Are you okay, Professor?”
She started. Her eyes slid to and then past him, at the rest of the classroom, before her shoulders slumped. He wasn’t the only one remembering the past, remembering the classmates that flitted in and out of their doors.
“I thought they would retreat,” Byleth whispered, her voice raspy, as though anything louder would shatter the moment.
“It’s a war,” Linhardt replied kindly, lowering his eyes. His fingers dug into his thighs. He had five years to get used to fighting former classmates. She had only weeks. “No one wants to—no one can retreat.”
Byleth inclined her head, gazing at her hands. She clenched them, as though she was holding her sword. “I suppose so.” Letting out a shaky laugh, she looked up at him. “This won’t get easier.”
The wording triggers a memory, long ago, of his first kill. Of him asking a question with no answer.
He hadn’t needed one. He definitely didn’t want to find out this way. Quietly, he leaned forward and squeezed her hand. “It hasn’t for me.” Linhardt paused. “Byleth.”
Her eyes widened fractionally before her expression crumpled, and she shuddered. Byleth’s sobs were silent things. He wasn’t sure how he had ever thought of her emotionless all those years ago. She clasped his hand like a lifeline and he clung back tightly.
vii.
There wasn’t an agreement, a formal declaration, but somehow, Linhardt kept joining Byleth for her nightly patrols. Somehow, they kept meeting in the abandoned places of their youth, surrounded by the ghosts of had-beens and could-have-beens. There was something utterly natural about the way he slipped into place beside her, about his scant questions and her quiet replies.
Tonight was no exception. He found her in the grand hall, his feet knowing where to go even if she hadn’t told him where to meet. The hall was large, dark, and looming. A few holes in the ceiling revealed a bright night sky, filled with stars. On one side, Byleth sat in a window alcove, a lantern at her feet as she stared out the window.
“Byleth.”
She looked up at the sound of her name, the light casting shadows on her face as she turned. Even in the dim light, her hair still glowed like a fire, her eyes as bright as the stars above. In the night, Byleth seemed less a woman and more a goddess, an ethereal being that would disappear if he looked away too long.
It was an irrational thought. He had watched her for years and he knew just how all-too-human she was. Her arm even had a bandage from a recent skirmish, an injury that was healing far too slowly for his liking.
It was an irrational thought, but he felt it all the same. Byleth lips curved slightly and he couldn’t look away, mesmerized as she picked up her lantern and approached him. “You’re late,” she said.
“You look tired,” he replied. It was true, she looked worn in the ways that he felt, in the ways that war wormed deep inside and refused to leave.
“We all are.” She turned, heading down the hallway.
He slipped into space beside her, as usual, as always. No, not always, he had seen her die, seen her come back. It could happen again. Linhardt felt his hand brush against hers, and the urge to grab it.
Linhardt froze. He wanted to grab her hand.
Noticing he wasn’t beside her, Byleth turned around, raising her lantern high. “Linhardt?”
Linhardt wanted more than to grab her hand. He wanted that always, that forever. He wanted those quiet questions in a study, wanted lazy afternoons and long naps. A world without war was ideal, but a world with Byleth was all that he really needed. His skin flushed, his heart beating like a rabbit’s, and he was glad it was dark, that the naked desire that must have been clearly etched across his face was all but invisible.
“N-nothing,” Linhardt stuttered, forcing his feet to move again.
He loved her. He might have loved her for a long time now.
It seemed he had a new line of questioning to try out. One that started with a ring and hopefully ended with a yes.

Title: Cuteness Member - Reddy
Reddy (HTFMegaman's HTF OC) is joining in the "Cuteness Defender Academy", and he's "Ready" to combat with his first "Cuteness Mecha Armor" created by the Zeon Fed., the first "Zaku". 😁🤖
Zaku I Reddy Came from the real: MS-05B Zaku I [CLICK ME!]
Armament(s):
105mm Machine Gun • The 105mm machine gun is a standard weapon for Zaku types. It is a shell firing gun that does not require energy to be used, however, its effectiveness against heavy armor is very limited. This model used a 100-round drum magazine.
ZMP-47D/120mm Machine Gun • The 120mm machine gun is another standard weapon for Zaku types. It is a shell firing gun that does not require energy to be used, however its effectiveness against heavy armor is very limited. This model used a 100-round drum magazine.
H&L-SB21K/280mmA-N Zaku Bazooka • The 280mm Zaku Bazooka was another standard weapon that could be equipped to a Zaku types. The bazooka fired explosive rounds that were quite effective against the armor of enemy suits and battleships.
Initial Type Bazooka • This early design of the bazooka, featured a block ammo cartridge and a single exhaust port.
90mm Assault Rifle • A new assault rifle likely developed under the United Maintenance Plan as a weapon that can be used by various Zeon mobile suits in various environments.
Shotgun • A pump-action shotgun that is similar to the model used by other Zeon suits.
Heat Hawk Type 3 • An axe-like melee weapon, whose name is short for "tomahawk". Thermal energy is used to superheat the heat hawk's blade, allowing it to slice through the armor of enemy warships or suits.
G-3 Nerve Gas Grenade Launcher • These weapons launched rockets filled with G-3 nerve gas, a chemical weapon that could quickly kill.
S-Mine • S-Mines are anti-personnel shrapnel explosives based on German mines by the same name, which were used in the second World War.
Knuckle Shield • The knuckle shield is a modified Zaku II shoulder shield that mounts on the left arm. When mounted on the forearm the curve of the armor fits over the mobile suits hand. One of the modifications is the additions of three spikes placed on the plate that rests in front of the hand. These spikes make the knuckle shield an effective bashing weapon.
Shoulder Shield • Originally a regular equipment for MS-06 Zaku II series. Shoulder Shield on respective shoulders with hard points to carry Sturm Fausts and Beam Rifles.
Heat Sword • A melee weapon originally developed for the Gouf line of mobile suits. Like the Zaku's heat tomahawk the heat sword is a blade that is heated to high temperatures in order to increase it's cutting capacity. The Heat Sword was designed after a broadsword so its blade is longer than the tomahawk allowing for a greater range of attack.
MIP-B6 Cracker Grenade • Identical to those used by infantry, the cracker grenade is an explosive weapons designed to be thrown or launched by the MS and detonate after a set amount of time. The "cracker" breaks into several smaller munitions over a wide area.
Sturm Faust • An explosive weapon with a rocket propelled warhead, it was designed before the beginning of the One Year War as an anti-ship weapon. Useful both in space and under gravity, it was mainly deployed for anti-ship attacks. The Sturm Faust likely made a good anti-armor suit weapon, could be equipped with both a Sturm Faust and a more typical ranged weapon for greater versatility. As a non-guided weapon, it is difficult to hit targets with high mobility.

ok, i got about an hour and a half to play some zelda!!! i'm in rito village cuz i got my frog armor. my map says there's a chasm here so i'm gonna get some korok seeds and see if i can find it
god i miss kass.
i havent ben back here since i did the wind temple, so there's a lot of sidequests lol
ok, i NEVER would have found that chasm without help. the opening into the cave is SO tiny
off to a fantastic start. landed by a yiga hideout AND a lightroot!!
oh! it's isolated! i guess that makes sense cuz in the overworld it's surrounded by water. i was gearing up to do some Depths Exploring though, i kinda miss it??
i notice mineru didn't meet me. so she really is only in one little section until i do the dungeon. blegh
oh, it's not a proper yiga hideout, there's just a diary. something about a weapon with blue stone. PLEEEEASE be a timeshift stone please please please (guy who knows it wont actually be a timeshift stone)
CRYSTALLIZED ZONAI SHOP LETS FUCKING GOOO
aw and a schema stone
siren call of the depths: i kinda wanna explore more. i was gonna go back up to rito village and knock out some of those sidequests but fuck it
as with the overworld i have a lot of the eastern section knocked out and have barely touched the western half. so i guess i'll go clean up in the east. unfortunately i have not been marking ANY of my boss encounters bc i didnt want to look at this map too closely so i'll probably wind up doing them all again lol
i don't know, am i taking some of the joy of exploration out of the depths by looking at this map early? i guess so, but i don't want to forge on without it, and the internet has spoiled me for the whole thing anyway. besides, they're not detailed enough that you can really tell what it'll look like once you get there. i think some surprises will still remain
i am going to turn on hands i think lol. that's one surprise i DON'T want, not down here
i guess if things get too hairy or tedious i always have my bike...it's been so long since i learned about them, yet since then i've barely set foot down here at all. i was doing koroks. so it's been a REALLY long time since i've properly explored down here.
tiny dark spot by hateno so im starting there. warped to a nearby root and found the two new ones i need pretty much instantly without even using the spoiler map - they were just hidden behind a wall
i read somewehre that the weapons the ghost soldiers hold for you, the unrotted ones, will only be weapons you've already broken above. which is stupid cool but then WHYYY do i never get royal broadswords...they're my favorites...
another mine...i guess that's to be expected. why do they all have the names of the cities above though? like, hateno didn't exist throughout the ages, it wasnt in oot or whatever. you can't tell me every city in hyrule is 10,000 years old. i guess lin's sheikah slate is naming the mines and using the names of the villages it knows? but IT'S 10,000 years old too. i love totk but the way it breaks the lore is so fucking frustrating, especially since i was finally excited about the lore actually being COHESIVE for the first time after skyward sword.
ooh, this diary mentions a hidden yiga academy behind a waterfall in gerudo...i've been spoiled a bit for that questline too but i feel better that i found the tip organically
oh. i found a "researcher" lol
LMAOOOO she's asking me to pick my own demise. incred
good GOD what is that...i shouldn't have answered...i picked burny bc i actually hate freezy more but what in the name of god
i mean i killed her basically instantly but that was a little alarming! i wish i got a schema stone for one of THOSE
MORE refinery shopping. i already have enough for one battery upgrade and i'm close to getting a second
oop yeah there's upgrade #2
and another schema stone!
ok, doubling back to check and old map mark i missed...
GLOOM TREES BAD
oh it's cap of the sky! i actually already have one of those lol but i can sell this one
ok, let's see...there's a tiny dark spot under gut check rock, so i'll get that next...
i have like. 630 arrows lol and it's a good thing too bc i got spotted by a monster camp and just took them out from a tree
zonaite really isnt hard to collect...like, at first having to get 4000+ to max your battery seemed impossible. but the hard part is that the refineries don't sell a lot at once so you either have to warp around or wait to turn it all in lol
i like how weather attack makes food useful again? like i stopped making food to help me with heat or cold bc i had armor...BUT i can't have armor to defend me from the elements AND the attack up from the elements at the same time. if i want both, i need food for one or the other! it's very clever. now i need to be more mindful when cooking instead of just doing the same health and stamina refills over and over
i really hate how hard the lava air effect makes it to fucking SEE down here. jesus
killed a flux construct. sick nice etc
found a proper yiga hideout >:)
minecart tracks??? i want a cart too... :(
sadly lacking in cart to cart combat. 0/10 stars
ok, working my way down towards the spring of power. i want those bargainer statues lol
i like exploring the depth a lot better when shit is lit up. i didn't realize until now but it's exhausting not to be able to see ANYTHING. i think that's why i got so tired of it so quickly before, even though i was also having fun poking around. finding one light point after another is fun and that requires darkness but it's also really difficult to navigate the terrain when you can't see AND there's gloom
found my mf statue. i cant believe i walked right past these before...you wouldn't know they're there unless you're looking :/
YESSSSS HOOD OF THE DEPTHS...finally.................
i had almost 700 poes so i had plenty to buy with lol
ANOTHER yiga hideout!! have i done this one?? it looks familiar...
oh yep lmao i sure have. bummer. at least i can mark it off my map :/
ok, thats all i have time for!!!

Bio:
Gideon Gorelieu was born almost nothing to a pair of indentured servants in French Louisiana: his father repaired the local magnate's fishing fleet, his mother a maid in one of the minor sugar baron's households. he watched his two older brothers die in a hurricane that wreaked horror on their coastal community, and his younger brother never lived past childhood –– dead of sickness and starvation, and his mother died of grief soon after. with a decent knowledge of fishing boats and weather patterns, he took to sea on a merchant vessel as a green hand, but showed promise and eventually made his way up through the ranks. as an officer, he was instrumental in staging a mutiny against their captain, and the ship became a profitable smuggling operation rather than a legal merchant ship. with her dark grey sails and unique capacity for escaping the notice of the law amongst the sandbars and coves, the schooner took a new name: La Petite Revenante.
for a while, Gideon bent his head to the new captain, but in an outburst of his soon to be infamous temper, killed his only competition in a duel of honor. when they put to sea again, he raised the prospect of piracy: any dissenters had their throats slit and were tossed to the sharks, leaving only the most merciless, and callus, among them. after a few minor prizes, cutting their teeth as buccaneers and filling out their ranks, Captain Gorelieu set his sights on a Spanish frigate. the revenante's crew swarmed aboard, and slaughtered almost every single man, leaving only a few to swim ashore and tell the tale of the newly-named CAPTAIN BARTHOLOMEW GORE.
Gore rapidly became a successful pirate with his flagship, La Tuerie, in his command, taking several prizes that he allocated to the command of his officers and building out a sizeable fleet. the Louisiana governor, wishing to keep Gore as an ally rather than an enemy, offered him a commission as a privateer, a plot of land, and some political influence if in exchange he would show mercy to the colony and share his ill-gotten wealth with them instead of elsewhere. Gore could not refuse, and began construction on the place which put fear into the hearts of all those enslaved and indentured who worked on it: Bloodmere Manor. to separate the privateer who now lived in privilege and wealth ( and hard won fear and respect ) in New Orleans from the bloodthirsty pirate captain, Gore occasionally used the name Roberts in other ports like Nassau, Port Royal, and Havana, but the people of Louisiana always attributed the stories of bloodshed to their own captain.
on one of his returns to New Orleans to check on the progress of his new mansion, Gore dined with the governor and a few of the city's socialites and was introduced to Miss Priscilla de Claire, a lovely, innocent nineteen year old heiress who –– kept in the dark about Gore's piratical exploits –– was charmed by the older captain who could be most gentlemanlike when he wanted to be. he began courting her, swaying her with expensive gifts and endless attention, and the two were set to be married as soon as the manor was finished. Gorelieu began integrating himself more completely into landed society and into his role as a plantation owner, befriending the de Claire's and most of the other New Orleans families with a by-and-by more polished exterior. but by night, he drank heavily, and every time he closed his eyes began to be haunted by the faceless masses he had put to the sword.
on the very night they were wed, Gorelieu hosted the de Claire's and other prominent families in the richly-decorated mansion, but while he entertained his in-laws, Priscilla snuck off alone to explore her new home. in the basement, she discovered a chest full of relics of his pirate's life: weapons, and maps, and worst of all, the bones of his enemies, kept like souvenirs and not all of them cleaned. she confronted Gore, horrified, threatening to have their marriage annulled. Gore was incensed. ( alongside the loss of his love, he stood to lose her dowry, too ) in a fit of rage, he dashed his bride's head against the wall, and bricked her body up in it.
while the de Claire's searched the bayou endlessly for their missing daughter, assuming she had balked from married life and fled the obligations of becoming his bride, Priscilla ensured her husband could not enjoy his newfound wealth, or find any peace in the expansive house: her ghost tormented him to madness, until he fled again to sea ( hoping to escape some suspicion, as well ). but he found no respite from his bride, there, either, and the visions followed him until –– his ears filled with endless screams –– he hung himself from the yardarm, a ghostly specter on a ship of death, leaving the mansion empty of everything but ghosts.

(Late) Swordtember Prompt 30: Guardian
Sir Luther and his curio, Apolle, spend a lovely day out during the autumn month, Exalt.
Curios are child objects who are the offspring of a deceased living object, called the progenitor. When a progenitor dies a true death, they will yield a withered kernel which will be crushed to extract its germ. The germ is then replanted in a material pile matching their progenitor's material makeup. After a few months, the curio will hatch from their pericarp (egg) and be looked after by their caretaker(s).
Mini-story below:
"So, I have an announcement…," Apolle the cloak said as she and her guardian finally settled in a nice family tavern in Vintie, Southern Longormore. Apolle's Guardian, Sir Luther the broadsword, perks up at her words as he slides into a rack-chair on the opposite side of his daughter.
Luther smiled at her, "Oh, did you get a promotion at the Vintie Well Defense? That's great --"
"No," Apolle sighed, shrugging her fabric shoulders, "I wish. Especially for all the time I had spent writing records all day for them. I got something better instead."
From her side sachel, Apolle pulls out a scroll. On its front side is a wax seal, slightly broken from being opened some time ago. Apolle opens the scroll, revealing an elaborately decorated letter. Luther leans forward, his single eye wide open as he reads the letter's print. He makes a sudden gasp, realizing this letter is from Merope Academy, one of the seven magical Academies of Pleiades.
"This soon?" he said, astonished, "But, Apolle, you just turned 19! How?"
Apolle gives Luther the letter to read. "In my application to Alcyone Academy, I--ahum--mentioned that one time I saved everyone at the Well Defense from a massive fossil outbreak. My boss vouched for me, too," she said with a shy smile, "And I also mentioned that I'm Gwuenevere's descendant and I been studying to become a mage…"
"I never thought…oh my," Luther said, blinking away tears as he finished the letter.
It was twenty-one years ago when Gwuenevere died. She was well known for advancing alchemy and fighting for the rights of all fragilekind. She was a skilled war mage who defended the freedom of Erdestra, Luther's home kingdom where he was once a ruling Arch long ago. She was also his cherished friend and, later, beloved partner.
Someone who he deeply mistreated all those years ago. After Gwuenevere saved his struggling kingdom from his foolishness when she dethroned him during the Cumulus Wars, Luther desired to make up for his wrongs. Years later on the eve of Erdestra's last battle against Janthizera, she requested him to take care of her kernel should she die in combat.
He held true to that promise.
"Oh, Apolle…," Luther said as he looked back up to see Apolle smiling at him, "I'm so proud."
Apolle reaches out and holds her guardian's gloved hand with her own. "Guardian Luthia, thank you for helping me get this far. Your stories about Gwuenie inspired me. I wanted to be just like her when I grew up. Thank you for everything."

On May 19th 1795 James Boswell, diarist and biographer of Dr Samuel Johnson, died.

RWBY
S/I: Ris Kodiak
After being orphaned in Mantle, Ris is found defending citizens from the Grimm by a member of Ironwood’s Ace Ops. They are taken to meet the general himself, and after noticing they are of age to enter Atlas Academy and a recommendation from Dr Polendina, Ironwood generously offers to fund their tuition. Ris happily agrees, and not long after is charged with the protection and preservation of Penny Polendina, Atlas’ premier project. They become partners at Atlas Academy, and later are selected to travel to Vale for the Vytal Festival. There they meet team RWBY, and their story begins.
Ris’ semblance is called Color Guard. They’re able to absorb light energy from colors and turn them into shields. The more saturated an object is, the more durable and/or large the shield will be. Their weapon is a broadsword that doubles as a rifle, and can transform into twin throwing axes.
